- [gasps] Dan: A puzzling pyramid... Thaddeus: That's not right.
[buzzer] Dan: Had all four teams... [buzzer] Dan: Bent out of shape.
[buzzer] Carolen: [sighs] We did not build a pyramid.
- We timed out.
Dan: But ultimately, things came together for Team Green.
You've picked up first place on this day and the first place benefit at tomorrow's challenge.
And Team Black fell to the back of the pack.
Carolen: I was very surprised.
Tia: I did not think that we were gonna get a strike.
Dan: Nolin saw his mother for the very first time.
Leah: Oh— Nolin: [laughs] - my goodness.
Deadra: Does it look like you?
[laughs] Nolin: That looks- looks most like me.
Dan: Karen was surprised with a relative reunion.
All: [greetings] Karen: Hi everybody!
They all welcomed me with open arms for the very first time.
Dan: Tia's sister delivered some difficult news.
- So, what's Dad like?
- He passed away when he was about 47 years old.
Tia: It makes me sad.
It does make me sad.
Dan: And the joy of discovering a brother was met with bad news about Jon's mother.
- You know, she was homeless for a little while and then one day she just vanished.
Jon: Just a lot, and some of the news, it stinks.
♪ [emotionally] Can I get a moment, please?
[door shutting] ♪ Dan: DNA tells us who we are and where we came from.
Following their own DNA, four teams are racing... Jon: It's gonna be right here.
Go, go, go!
Dan: To win $50,000... Nolin: We made it!
Dan: And to find their family.
[knocking] Singer: ♪ Oh, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh-oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh-oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh-oh ♪ ♪ Dan: The sun rises over the fourth day of Relative Race, shining a light on our contestants and the changes that are happening in their lives.
Kentrelle: Three days in, emotionally, physically, I am drained.
But I am so excited to be on this journey.
Jon: Yeah, there's a lot of information on the journey, um, even three days in, kinda hits you like a truck.
But you know, last night I was able to, uh, spend some quality time with my brother, so it was a, it was a fun time.
Tia: I'm not alone anymore, you know?
I have, I have a family.
There is more to look forward to.
Karen: I feel absolutely amazing.
This was like the highlight, you know, to-to meet family that I've never met.
Nolin: I just feel so welcomed and so, so appreciated by all of my biological family.
It's very exciting and I feel like it's— we're gonna build a, a special bond.
Dan: Teams may be spread out all across the country, but they are united in purpose as they discover connections that will last a lifetime.
For Team Blue, that connection continues in Rome, Georgia as Jon spends the morning with his brother, Dustin.
Jon: This morning my brother, uh, said that he wanted to show me something that's uh, pretty important to him.
It was pretty epic.
- My most prized possession out here... Jon: Stuffed monkey?
Dustin: Uh, this was given to me by my birth mother.
I've had it since the day I was born.
Jon: Oh, wow.
- So, this would also... Jon: Right.
Dustin: Be your birth mother's.
- That's true.
You've had it for 27 years and it still looks great.
Dustin: When I handed my brother the monkey, I saw a look of bewilderment.
I wanted to share something that I found special with my brother.
For most of my childhood, other than the brother I grew up with, this was the only connection to an actual family that I had.
Jon: Sure.
Heck yeah, dude.
It's— I can tell it's important.
That brought a smile to my face, uh, made me feel wanted, made me feel a little bit important, uh, to someone.
And knowin' that, you know, maybe I'm someone worth, you know, finding, it was nice to know too.
♪ Nolin: This morning, uh, Dede and Donte brought us to the beach and there's a lot more cousins waiting to meet me.
Woman 1: Hi!
Nolin: Hey!
Woman 1: I'm Ashley.
Nolin: I'm Nolin.
Ashley: I'm your little cousin.
Woman 2: Hi, I'm [indistinct].
Nolin: Nolin.
It's so cool to me, havin' cousins that are similar in age.
It's very exciting and I feel like we're gonna build a-a special bond.
Woman 3: One big hug!
[indistinct laughing and chatting] Nolin: All of us bein' down here on the beach with that much excitement, it only made sense to just play games and have fun.
♪ Playin' all these games was just a great way to get to know them a little better.
And so it was, it was special.
It was really special.
[camera click] Dan: While Team Green soaks up the sun, Team Black soaks up every spare minute that they can with Tia's sister, Lisa.
Lisa: I'm glad I got to meet both of you.
We're definitely gonna stay in touch.
- Absolutely.
I've never had an older sibling, and so to get a sister and an older sister, I got the best gift ever.
- And I've got a little something for you for good luck, a picture of Dad and Grandma.
Tia: Oh, thank you.
Lisa: So take that with you.
Tia: I love it.
My first gift from my sister.
[chuckles] You know what, I'm just happy, I'm just grateful, and I'm gonna look towards the good of this and that's what I'll be thankful for.
[sniffs] [sighs] Lisa: Yep.
Yes, definitely.
♪ Karen: My cousin, Kathy, and I, this morning we got up and so we sat around and we had a chance to talk a little bit more about family and so that's really cool-- [kiss] really cool.
So this is Aunt Rose, Uncle Eddie, Arunde, and Kojo.
- Wow.
I wish I coulda met Kojo before he passed.
- Oh, you would've loved him.
Thaddeus: I'm feeling really happy for my mom.
It's not my journey, it's Team Red's journey and it's exciting to see her so surprised and so just in a mindset of joy.
[ticking] Hold on, we got a text.
Karen: We got a text?
Okay.
- All right.
Nolin: "Good morning teams—" - "And welcome to Day Four of Relative Race."
- "Team Black, you will be traveling to Quincy, California."
- "Team Red will be traveling to Roxboro, North Carolina."
- "Team Blue will be traveling to Birmingham, Alabama."
- You know where that is?
- Unfortunately.
- [laughs] - "Team Green will be traveling to—" Both: "Miramar, Florida."
Carolen: "Today's first place prize—" - "...is to penalize all the other teams—" - "...in tomorrow's challenge."
- "Your time starts now."
- All right, we better go.
[goodbyes] Kentrelle: Look, I got the bags.
I feel like you should go get the directions from your brother.
Jon: Your right, your right.
Kentrelle: Okay.
Karen: [sighs] Thaddeus: All right.
- Sweet.
Leah: Okay, are we ready?
Carolen: [grunts] Okay.
Tia: Teamwork makes the dream work girl.
Carolen: Don't it.
[grunts] [sighs] Karen: Let's do it!
- Make a left at the Dollar Tree.
- Left at the Dollar Tree.
- Awesome.
[record scratch] Tia: I'm gonna need your help with this one.
All right, you ready?
Carolen: Yes.
[grunts] Kentrelle: Before long, we about to go straight on that interstate.
- [whoops] Karen: Perfect.
Jon: Let's do it.
Kentrelle: Let's do it.
Tia: Ouch!
Carolen: I'm already dirty.
Tia: Did we do that?
Carolen: Probably.
Let's just act like it's dirt.
Dan: Team Black finally joins the other teams on the road.
Carolen and Tia will have to navigate to Quincy, California, complete a challenge, and find their relative, all in an allotted time of 2 hours and 20 minutes.
♪ Kentrelle: Team Green probably feels a little left out 'cause they the only ones without a strike.
You wanna— Jon: Tell them something funny.
Kentrelle: Okay.
Team Green, they'll probably be like, haha, thank you for your encouraging words.
- Be like, what?
[sniggers] [phone dings] Leah: Team Blue texted us.
- Thanks, but no thanks.
[phone dings] Kentrelle: Boring.
- Little bit.
Dan: Team Green is clearly impressing the competition, maybe not with texts, but certainly with their— ahem— first place ranking as they race to find Miramar, Florida, with an allotted time of 3 hours and 2 minutes.
Just one state above Team Green, and one strike below, Team Blue travels to Birmingham, Alabama with an allotted time of 2 hours and 18 minutes.
♪ Thaddeus: I hope we have a challenge where we have to think about something, maybe a memorization challenge.
Nothing physical.
Karen: [laughs] - Like, great googly-moogly.
Dan: Team Red is feeling all "googly-moogly" as they head to Roxboro, North Carolina.
They have an allotted time of 2 hours and 21 minutes.
♪ Carolen: This the street where we was at by the highway, Imma pull over.
Just let me see— Tia: Don't pull over— Carolen: Gimme— Tia: just drive!
- where I'm goin' Tia?
Just relax, let me help you.
We gotta help each other.
Look, uh— yeah 'cause it's only— Tia: You're micromanaging.
- Quarry Lakes.
Tia: You wanted to drive and I'm supposed to be the navigator on the map.
Carolen: This mornin', we got off to a bit of a rocky start.
Um, [clears throat] yeah.
[map rustling] Tia: So did you find it on the map?
Carolen: I did find it on the map.
- [sarcastically] Oh, that's awesome.
So while you're doing that, and we're not driving, our time is just going— Carolen: Tia, Imma ask you real respectfully— Tia: going.
Carolen: okay.
So like I said— - You're sitting here, costing us time— Carolen: I know we goin' to 80.
- because you wanna not— Carolen: Okay, 'cause you know what— it's-- [hums] Imma pray.
[map rustling] - We felt like we were under the gun a little bit.
Tensions rose a little bit.
Which way are you driving?
- I'm just drivin', I don't know.
S— be a street sign comin' up somewhere.
Tia: 'Cause I feel like you're driving north instead of south.
- So what should I do?
- Turn around and drive back towards town.
♪ Dan: While tensions rise for Team Black, Jon and Kentrelle discuss the difficult truths that they've learned over the last three days.
- I would like to meet some more siblings maybe.
I don't know if I wanna meet mom and dad so much.
Kentrelle: [inhales sharply] - 'Cause I've only met two relatives and it's already, it's already a lot.
- Yyyeah.
I know absolutely nothin' about my birth parents.
Um, the only thing I know is that I was adopted at five days old.
I feel like the worst part of my childhood was havin' to walk around and feel like everyone else knew more about my life than I did.
I grew up goin' to the same church my entire life, so everyone in the church kinda knew that I was adopted before me so, um, when I did find out it was like everyone felt like they had something to say to me and I-I don't— I didn't like that.
[dog panting] If I were to meet a parent, the first thing I'm asking is what happened?
Like, why did you give me up?
Because that's what I'm here for, duh.
You know, I don't really care about feelings and everything like that.
Like, tell me, like what have you been doing for 24 years.
So, yeah, a lot of questions.
In the car today, we had a moment to kinda reflect on our journey, and honestly, a lot of the things that we've learned have been kind of hard.
So, we just kinda have to be real with ourselves.
After listening to how my mom was pregnant with me at 14,15, like, that sounds good and all, but why would you feel so ashamed to say something?
You really could've said somethin'.
You really could've said somethin'.
But, what also gets me is she really could've gave me to an aunt or uncle or somebody, especially after hearing how all of my other cousins were raised by somebody else within the family.
Like you really could've gave me to somebody else in the family.
Like, you've done— you've probably done more hurt than harm honestly, because my life growing up, being adopted was not all that.
So, no, I'm not givin' you no hug.
No, I'm not givin' you no sympathy because all I'm feelin' right now is-is quite upset.
And I'm not-I'm not fakin' it with anybody, absolutely not.
Jon: Yeah, no I get it.
Like, I want the answers but I don't want the emotional baggage that's gonna come with it.
- I know, seriously.
♪ Dan: As teams scramble to get to their destinations... Thaddeus: I'm trusting my gut.
Dan: Team Black has made a crucial mistake.
- Feel free to look at the map.
Let us know the next road I should be lookin' for— - I did, I did.
- that'd be helpful.
Dan: But they aren't the only team struggling.
- 'Kay now it looks like we're going south, not west.
We saw a sign that says we are in Cedar Point and I was like, wait a minute, that's not, you know, west, where we need to be.
- Almost had to kick my boy out the car.
So do you know where we at, like on this map, like at all?
Jon: Um, all I see is a town.
I don't know anything else 'cause there's no signs.
- Um.
I was pretty frustrated because we lost a lot of time, um, in the place where we, you know, usually make up a lot of time.
We could hit 20— we could f— hit 20.
We just need to figure out where are we over here.
Jon: But I— there are zero signs on this road that tell me where I am.
- Do your part Jon, do your part.
- Hit me with some signs and yeah, I could.
Kentrelle: It was a good 15 minutes driving down this street and it's like, Jon, what are you doing?
- His driving stinks.
- Oh, boo.
[intense music] ♪ Tia: We're on 70.
Carolen: Oh we're on— thank you, we're on 70.
And we're takin' 70 to what road?
- To 89.
Carolen: It was a bit rocky.
We, you know, figure out where we went wrong.
We had to backtrack, but we got back en route.
- You know, I don't do well with someone takin' the reigns.
- I will chalk that up to my mistake.
- We both knew that maybe that's the way we should've been, is just go with it.
- I agree.
Tia: Yeah, don't overthink it.
I think a lot of our disagreements that Carolen and I had were like sisters.
Legit, we just had become emotionally connected, just like sisters.
You have to work through your disagreement, you know, make up and keep goin' forward and work things out.
Kentrelle: Excuse me sir, would you happen to know how to get to Alabama?
Man 1: At this light turn left, then go probably about six or seven miles.
You'll cross right into Alabama lines [indistinct].
Kentrelle: Thank you, thank you.
Man 1: Uh-huh.
Kentrelle: So once we got back on the main road, um, I wasn't mad at Jon anymore.
I mean, at the end of the day, it's about family, so if we get the strike, whatever.
Jon: Yep.
Kentrelle: This was our first minor disagreement.
- We kinked it out though.
- It won't be our last, but eh.
- We kinked it out.
- Yeah.
- I'm hopin' Team Green struggles a lot though.
Kentrelle: No, seriously.
Nolin: Whoop!
- We're here, we did it!
[slap] Now we get to rock the challenge.
[phone dings] - "Welcome to Roxboro, North Carolina."
- "Your challenge is located at—" - "the Sunset Ridge Buffalo Farm."
- "Miramar Parkway."
Karen: When we arrived at the Sunset Ridge, we didn't know what to expect.
Okay, looks like this might be it.
Come on, come on, come on!
- What is this?
Leah: Here we are.
Nolin: Come on, let's go.
Leah: We drive up and we're excited because it looks like a memory game, which I like.
[paper ripping] - What do we got?

- "Welcome teams.
Your challenge for Day Four is--" - "Memory Match."
Dan: Day Four's challenge is Memory Match.
For this challenge, teams must correctly answer a series of trivia questions before turning tiles over on their board.
Each tile will feature a team from past seasons of Relative Race.
Teams start with questions at the closest table to the tile board.
This table has the most difficult questions.
If they answer three incorrectly, they move back one table with easier questions, but further from the board.
Once a team has matched eight tiles correctly, this challenge is complete.
Leah: All right, let's go.
Nolin: Let's do it.
Thaddeus: Coming to the challenge, I actually wanted a memory challenge, so I was very happy.
Leah: So we run up to the challenge and we notice that one of the matches is already flipped over.
It's Monika and Magen from Season 7 and it's because of our first place prize from yesterday.
Nolin: Mmm.
- Season of... Um.
- Any guesses?
- No, none.
Thaddeus: Summer, summer of, summer of siblings?
Karen: Okay.
[buzzer] Thaddeus: Save our ship?
Oh right.
- There's three different tables, and so we start at the hardest one.
Leah: Save us... Nolin: I don't know, I don't know.
Leah: Okay.
[buzzer] Nolin: Save our ship.
And if you get questions wrong, you move back one to the easier questions.
Both: Uh.
[bagpipes playing distantly] - Los Angeles.
- No, country.
- Oh, which country.
- I would say Scotland.
- Scotland.
[ding] - Yes!
Thaddeus: Um, see— okay.
Karen: The first tile we flip over is Jarrell and Amauni from Season 8.
Thaddeus: The-the next one.
Yep.
Karen: The second tile we flip over is the Hitts from Season 3.
We're totally wrong.
- Flip them back.
They-they don't match.
Nolin: Ireland.
Leah: Scotland.
Oh yeah, that makes sense.
It's frustrating when we have to move back to the easiest table but yet we know they are the easiest questions, so it's kind of a mixed feeling.
Leah: What are the primary colors?
[groans] Nolin: Isn't it red, blue, green?
[buzzer] Leah: Oh.
Nolin: Oh, yellow.
Nolin: The Mississippi!
[buzzer] Leah: That's not right.
Nolin: And at that time, I think we were both a little flustered.
Uh, we weren't expecting to miss that many from the jump.
[buzzer] [phone dings] - Oh, we got a text!
Jon: Dan says "Welcome to Birmingham, Alabama."
Tia: "Your challenge is located at Pioneer Park."
Jon: "3000 Jefferson State Parkway."
- Oop!
Let's go!
Carolen: From Reno to Quincy it was a breeze and we made it to the challenge without any problems.
Let's go.
Tia: Okay.
Jon: Let's do it.
Kentrelle: Let's go.
- Where was chicken-fried steak invented?
Texas, they eat a lot, right?
- Okay, flip it?
[ding] Oh my gosh!
Karen: Aah!
You were right!
Tia: In which ocean is the Bermuda Triangle located?
Carolen: The Atlantic.
[ding] Yes!
Tia: Oh, good job.
Carolen: So I go!
Tia: Go, go, go!
Jon: Uh, where's the Great Barrier Reef located?
Um, Australia.
[ding] - You got it.
We had to hustle because we wasted so much time, we had to make up the time.
Thaddeus: Yes, that one, that one.
Yes, we got that one.
Our first match was Tiffani and Jose from Season 9.
Kentrelle: Boom.
[ding] Yes!
Jon: We flip over a match to see two guys that neither of us recognize, uh, at all.
- I guess we missed that season.
[chuckles] Carolen: [grunts] [buzzer] You got that Tia?
Tia: Yep, got it.
- You got it up there?
Tia: Yes.
Carolen: Okay.
The goal was to get eight teams matched, but it was a bit of a struggle.
Leah: I don't like trivia and it makes me really nervous and so I start to get in my head.
How many colors are in the rainbow.
Six.
[buzzer] Nolin: Ah, okay.
Who is depicted on the hundred-dollar bill?
Frank-Franklin.
[ding] Leah: And then we finally get one and I think that kinda gave us a boost.
[ding] Yes, Paris.
Yes.
[claps] - Once we had a few matches, I got really happy.
Singer: ♪ Oh, we're on fire ♪ ♪ We're gettin' ready to blow ♪ ♪ We're reachin' higher ♪ ♪ Feelin' as good as gold ♪ ♪ We're ready to rock you ♪ ♪ So let the camera roll ♪ ♪ We're on fire ♪ ♪ We're gonna steal the show ♪ Thaddeus: Oh, you were right, the sisters!
Karen: Yes.
Got it.
[ding] Thaddeus: I would like to thank Season 5 sisters, Maria and Elizabeth, for their very helpful match because now we're past the halfway point.
- We were both able to fire out answers for the trivia questions pretty easily and it was pretty easy to match them.
Kentrelle: Which one is that?
Jon: Karim and Rachelle.
Uh... Kentrelle: Try— second row, second row.
Jon: This one?
Kentrelle: Right— that one.
Try it.
Jon: Heck yeah.
[ding] Good job man.
Kentrelle: We came to eat and we did just that.
Jon: Mhm.
And we ate.
- No!
Tia: Oh shoot, I'm sorry.
[buzzer] Carolen: I saw the contestants from I believe Season 4.
It's Jerica and her brother.
They were my favorite.
But it's just a bit hard— Tia: Just— Carolen: remembering where the photos were.
- yeah, remembering, just remembering which-which one was on which line.
- I, I picked that one somewhere.
Tia: Yes, you did.
It— Carolen: That's why I was like where is it?
During the challenge, we are going to the board, trying to match the faces.
And when you get it wrong you have to flip it back over so you're strugglin' to remember who you flipped over in the first place.
- And then the one above it.
The one above it.
Oh my goodness.
Yes.

[ding] Karen: Oh.
Thaddeus: Ray and Nicole from Season 6 were right beside each other.
Now, we only have one match left.
Jon: What is— what is the largest origin?
Uh, the skin.
[slaps] [ding] Kentrelle: That's you.
That's easy.
We got it, we got it!
We did it, we did it!
Leah: What animal is normally associated with delivering babies?
A stork.
[ding] Nolin: Nice.
We finished it.
[claps] Thaddeus: What animal can be seen on the Porsche, um, logo?
That's um, not a elephant— a horse.
[ding] A horse.
Karen: Yes.
Thaddeus: Uh the last one!
Karen: [cheers] Kentrelle: Yes!
[ding] Jon: Heck yeah!

Jon: Let's do it.
Kentrelle: Let's go.
Thaddeus: All right, let's go.
Both: [laughing] Nolin: Let's go.
Kentrelle: Woo.
Jon: Okay.
Karen: Yes.
Jon: Navigating to our relative's, we learned our lessons from the previous days and hopefully, hopefully today goes well.
Leah: Do you know where River Run Park is?
We don't normally meet a relative at a park, but I'm thinking that people should know where a park is.
Leah: Four more blocks?
Man 2: Yeah.
Leah: Okay.
Karen: Oh, Allensville Road— we on Allensville Road!
Hang on, hang on, hang on.
Thaddeus: What is?
- Allensville Road, I just saw it.
I think we're on it.
We literally bumped into Allensville Road.
- The easiest address yet.
- Yes, yes.
Whoa baby!
- We still gotta find it.
- Okay.
Jon: This is 7th, 7th Street northwest, we're on 10th.
I know but is-is this gonna be 7th or this gonna be 6th?
We gotta go the other way.
Jon: Okay.
Kentrelle: Please let this really be on the grid system so we can find this address a little faster because we can't take no more setbacks.
Jon: Mm-mm.
- Absolutely not.
Jon: 10!

- So we're comin' up.

- We did it!
We actually found one.
Nolin: We did it!
Leah: We found a map.
Karen: Yeah, baby!
Jon: Good job, dude.
- What animal is known as a sea cow?
♪ I can't think of it.
I cannot honestly think of it.
I-I'm just, it's not, it's wrong.
But it's a— Platypus.
[buzzer] Manatee!
I knew it started with an M. Okay.
Carolen: Yeah, it was very hard.
Tia: And several times we had turned people over, but, twice, or— but just didn't remember where they were at.
Carolen: Darn it.
Okay.
Tia: 'Kay, come on.

[clock ticking] Carolen: Uh... What state-- [buzzer] [thud] We did so bad.
- We just couldn't get the... Carolen: Yeah.
- We ended up timing out on the challenge.
Not completing the challenge, that may make or break us on the results.

Carolen: Let's go!

That's Lawson's chapel, which was started by your great-great-great- great-grandmother— - Four greats.
Bunny: was the founder of this church.
Annis Lawson is like the founder of the family.
She, um, was given land by her slaveowner.
Not only was she given land, she um, she built a church.
She put the first nails in Lawson Chapel Baptist Church, which is— We're still operating out of that church to this day.
- Wow.
Bunny: So all of these graves out here are somehow related to you.
Thaddeus: Really?
Bunny: Yes.
Karen: Crazy, right?
Bunny: So if you wanna come with me, we could show you some of, you know, your ancestors.

[laughs] After I introduced him, I kinda, um, explained a little bit of the family history.

I got to learn so much about my bloodline.

Renita: He won so many competitions, Mr. Valverde, Mr. Olympia, Mr. World.
He used to train with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Carolen: My dad used to be a bodybuilder.
It even made me more excited to look forward to meeting my dad.
How do you feel about having an eighth sister?
- I've been excited ever since I found out.
Your father felt like he wasn't there and that was it, and I had to tell him, Dad, you're beating yourself up for nothing.
How could you-- you, you didn't know.
- Yeah, that's it.
Renita: He didn't know, and it was just, you know, and he's an awesome dad to everybody.
That's just how he is.

I am looking forward to a very strong relationship, a very solid foundation, seeing that this is a new start.

I didn't take it serious, and when, when she was in the hospital, I got the call and she said she did it.
And I was, like, wow.
You know?
I couldn't believe it.
But, uh, I even, I even called the lawyer that she, you know, made everything finalized with.
And he said it's too late.
I feel very sorry man.
- I don't have, I don't have any hard feelings.
I'm just-- I just want you to know that I have had a great life, and yeah, now getting to talk-- Quint: That's great.

When I'm talking to my father, you can just tell how the, the regret that he had and the wanting to make things right and to build that relationship.

I guess we were younger, so I never really paid attention like that.

I met my great aunt.
