Dan: Team's launch into another fan-favorite challenge.
Alex was pleasantly surprised to find his sister, Kara.
Alex: No way!
Kara: Yes!
Alex: I've heard so much about you!
It definitely got emotional very quickly.
Dan: Team Black added two aunts to their family.
Scott met his nephew, Cody.
And Shawn embraced a new cousin.
Lisa: Okay, let's just all bring it in.
Dan: In the end, Team Black took first place.
Jamie: Yeah!
Dan: Thanks to their country road photo.
And Team Blue received their first strike.
DNA tells us who we are and where we came from.
Following their own DNA, four teams are racing... Hannah: Oh my gosh!
Dan: ...to win $50,000... Alex: Fingers crossed.
Dan: ...and to find their family.
[knocking] [uplifting music] ♪ ♪ It's Day 5 of Relative Race.
The journey of a lifetime continues for all four teams.
Today, all of our teams begin their day with one strike each.
Team Black, Jamie and Jansen, wake up once again not far from home, in Marion, Arkansas.
Jamie: For the past four days, we've basically been in the beautiful state of Arkansas.
Now, it-it's been nice because we've got to see places we haven't seen in a while.
Uh, kinda really makes you appreciate home.
Dan: Team Green, Scott and Hannah, begin their day in Columbia, Missouri!
- This morning when I woke up Cody let us know that he wanted to make brownies!
So, we got to spend some time baking brownies with him, and it was a lot of fun.
It was fun having dessert for breakfast.
Dan: And Team Blue, Curtis and Shawn, are starting out in Atlanta, Georgia.
[calm music] Shawn: This morning I was showing my cousins, Bill and Lisa, some of the pictures I've been collecting along the way.
And, well, Bill asked me if he could give me a present.
- Okay!
Yeah, of course!
Lisa: When we were talking to Shawn at the table this morning, Bill saw his memory book and decided that he wanted to add a portrait of his dad into the book.
Shawn: Hair, ears.
Bill: See?
Shawn: Yeah!
To sit there and watch him just carefully draw the picture-- and he even used one of the other pictures, um, as a reference-- i-it just felt so amazing just to, to have him willing to just give me a gift like that.
It's a treasured, it's a treasured belonging of mine now.
Shawn: Thank you, Bill.
- Thank you.
And I'm just as blessed to have met you.
Thank you, Bill.
Bill: You're welcome.
Shawn: Thank you.
♪ Dan: Team Red, Alex and Jaime, start their morning in Baltimore, Maryland, as they wake up with a special surprise for Alex's sister, Kara.
Alex: So, since it's your birthday today, we decided that we were gonna get you a cake.
Kara: Awoh, thank you so much.
- Today is my sister Kara's birthday.
So, this morning we presented her a cake that we secretly colluded to, uh, get for her last night.
Kara: Thank you so much, that was amazing.
Thank you.
Alex: Oh, you're welcome.
And, uh, to celebrate your birthday, I'm gonna play you one of my songs.
Kara: Okay!
Alex: It's kind of a sad song.
Kara: [whispers] Okay.
Alex: All right.
[guitar strumming] ♪ I don't come with a guarantee ♪ ♪ No buy-back plan, factory warranty ♪ ♪ I'm just me ♪ Kara: It was everything to be able to share this day with him for the first time in my life.
It made me cry because it was just so thoughtful and meaningful for me to have a birthday with him and he went out of his way to make this gesture for a sister that he only just met.
- ♪ Oh, then take me as is ♪ ♪ Don't pass on a classic ♪ ♪ Yeah, I'm quick, but I can't claim that I'm the fastest ♪ ♪ I don't need repairs just a polish for my chrome ♪ Kara: I'm in awe of his talent, and the song really made me emotional because it was about taking people as they are, and I just met my brother and I already love him for exactly how he is, and the song fit that perfectly.
Alex: ♪ And as fuel and fire meet air, ♪ ♪ then I will always get you back home ♪ ♪ - Oh my gosh, that was amazing!
Alex: Thank you - Oh my goodness.
Alex: I've been wanting to share music with biological family for a very, very long time.
Kara: That blew my mind, you're so talented.
Alex: Oh, thank you.
- Thank you for sharing that.
Alex: Of course, Happy Birthday.
Kara: Thank you.
Alex: ♪ And as fuel and fire meet air, ♪ ♪ then I will always get you back home.
♪ [driving beat] [phone pings] Jaime: Oh!
We got a text!
Alex: I'm not done with my cake yet.
Jaime: We got a text from Dan, we can do that later.
Alex: [muffled] Okay.
- I'm joking, where are we going?
All: [laugh] Curtis: Okay, from Dan-- Good morning, Teams, and welcome to Day 5 of Relative Race.
Jaime: Team Red will be traveling to Hamilton, New Jersey.
- Team Blue will be traveling to-- Both: Chattanooga, Tennessee!
Jansen: Team Black will be traveling to Mt.
Vernon, Illinois.
Hannah: And Team Green will be traveling to Camden, Missouri!
Jansen: Today's photo subject is a portrait.
Jaime: The first place prize-- - --is a three-minute freeze on your clock tomorrow!
Curtis: Your time starts now!
Okay, let's go!
Jamie: We'll see y'all!
Thank y'all so much!
Regina: Good to see ya.
Mary: Thank y'all.
Alex: Ah, I got cake all over me!
Kara: [laughs] Curtis: We're heading to Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Shawn: We're driving out of Atlanta to get up to Tennessee.
I'm a little bit nervous about it because it's Atlanta traffic still.
You know, we're still here in the middle of Atlanta.
Alex: I don't know where we're going, he knows where we're going.
Jaime: I-I've, I've been in Hamilton a couple times, it's-- the traffic might be, like, uh-- like the time that we're leaving and the time that we're commuting, if I had known we were going to Hamilton, and I made the decision, I'd have left at four in the morning.
Alex: Great.
Cody: Good luck you guys!
Jamie: All right, well see ya!
Jansen: See y'all later.
♪ [funky music] Shawn: Team Black will be traveling to Mt.
Vernon, Illinois.
Oo, so they're going out of their home territory.
Team Black's had it easy for four days, driving around their hometown.
Curtis: Yeah, let's see if they can actually navigate like the rest of us.
[phone ping] - Blue Team says, hey y'all!
Saw you're headed to Illinois.
Are you sure you have any relatives that don't live in Arkansas?
Nope!
We're not!
Jansen: They're probably from Arkansas, for all we know.
We'll probably know 'em.
[laughs] Shawn: They said, nope, we're not.
They're probably up here on vacation.
Curtis and Shawn: [laugh] Dan: Today, Team Blue, Curtis and Shawn, will be racing from Atlanta, Georgia to Chattanooga, Tennessee.
They have an allotted time today of two hours and ten minutes.
As for Team Black, Jamie and Jansen, they're finally leaving their home state of Arkansas, and are headed to Mt.
Vernon, Illinois.
Their allotted time for the day is four hours and five minutes.
[music winds down] [soft groovy music] Jaime: Barbecue spare ribs?
Alex: [laughs] That is amazing!
Too bad we didn't bring the cake.
Jaime: Can I feed you some of this?
Alex: [laughs] Yeah.
Dan: Enjoying some tasty leftovers from last night is Team Red.
Alex and Jaime are racing from Baltimore, Maryland to Hamilton, New Jersey.
They have an allotted time of two hours and eighteen minutes.
Both: [laugh] Jaime: So good!
♪ Scott: Take a picture of someone-- like, a runner, with, uh-- they had this in the background?
- I'm just trying to look for very, like-- - Oh, oh look, look at the person walking down the street.
Hannah: Yeah, I would love to take a picture of them.
Scott: Okay.
Dan: Today's photo challenge theme is portrait.
Teams will once again have 30 minutes off the clock to take their photo.
Hannah: Do you care if I take a photo of you for a TV show called Relative Race?
- Oh, yay!
As we were driving, Dad spots this guy with a really awesome beard and... we just knew we had to stop so we could take a photo of him.
Bend down a little bit, yeah, like a, on your knee, or not on your knees but like a cool bend?
Scott: Yeah!
Hannah: Yeah like that, that's so cool!
[camera shutter] Dan: As Team Green snaps their photo, Scott and Hannah are staying in the state of Missouri today, they are departing Columbia for Camdenton, Missouri.
They have an allotted time of one hour and forty-three minutes.
Scott: Oh, look at, and look at the background.
Ho-ly-- Hannah: These are so cool!
Scott: ----schnikey!
Hannah: Yeah, I really like that photo.
Scott: I mean, it's, it's so natural.
Hannah: Ready?
Scott: Do it.
Hannah: It has been sent!
Now that's a winner!
Scott: Yeah!
[pensive music] Shawn: Man, thank you so much, dude.
Curtis: For what?
Curtis: For coming, like, being a part of this.
Carrying me when I need it.
And honestly, like, driving, and just your personality with, like, with people who, you know, you're not related to, and you're, like, you're just still so, like, invested.
You know, like, I appreciate that.
And I got mad respect for you, dude.
Curtis: Aw, I appreciate that.
I think right off the bat we have a bond.
Just the little time I spent with you we've been able to connect on a certain level that has made it easy to just, you know, to have this experience with you.
Shawn: Yeah, for sure.
Well, and for me, too, it's, it's that you're an open person.
Not everybody is like that.
It could've been any other stranger, but it was somebody that, we're just both lookin' for the same, you know, uh, outcome.
Curtis: [sighs] You know, I've, uh, I've learned a lot, uh, during our time together.
But, you know, what sticks out to me is, um, how humble you are, uh, how caring you are, um, how sensitive you are to other people's needs.
And just... your overall attitude towards life.
I think some of these, uh, character traits I can actually, uh, pick up from you, so.
It's been a good experience being on this trip with you.
- Thanks, man, that means a lot.
I'll trade you any of this for some of your confidence anytime.
Curtis and Shawn: [laugh] ♪ Dan: As destination cities quickly approach, Teams Blue, Red, and Black still have yet to complete their photo.
- We decided to stop by this truck stop to take a portrait of what we think is the backbone of America-- our truck drivers.
And, uh, one of 'em was kind enough to allow us take his photo.
Make sure you don't get the name of that other truck in there.
Jansen: Yeah, I know.
Jaime: Hello!
Today's photo challenge is a portrait, and Alex and I like to think outside the box.
Alex: So yeah, we're gonna take a picture of a dog.
Shawn: All right.
Curtis: Out of the blue we saw this family.
- So, we approached them and, uh, we just really liked, uh, the background, and, you know, they were a beautiful family.
Alex: This dog definitely behaved for us.
Jaime: This dog was the sweetest, most photogenic thing.
She looked like she knew exactly what she was there for.
She laid, she licked, she posed.
And we got a lot of pictures of Maisie.
Alex: I love it.
Aw, I think that's the one.
Curtis: I like that more.
Shawn: You do like that one more?
Jansen: Thank you, man.
I appreciate that!
Truck driver: All right, man.
Jamie: Hey, thanks a lot.
Jansen: Thank you.
We appreciate it.
Jaime: Try it like that.
Alex: You want that one?
Jaime: Yeah, that's it, we're done.
Photo challenge, done for the day.
♪ [action music] Hannah: Camdenton!
Scott: All right!
Hannah: We're here!
Hannah: Yes!
- There's Hamilton!
- There's Hamilton, all right.
We're here, we're hittin' Hamilton!
[ding] Jamie: Now we have a text from Dan!
Shawn: It says, Curtis: [laughs] Scott: Panmai Drive.
Gonna win this challenge today.
[clap] - Even in the rain.
- Okay, let's go get it!
Shawn: All right, let's do it.
♪ Alex: Where is it, where is it, where is it?
Jaime: There, right there, right there, right there.
Alex: Oh, there it is, there it is!
Hannah: There it is!
Scott: There it is, there it is!
Hannah: There's the yellow flag, okay.
Jamie: There it is, there it is, right there, right there!
♪ Jamie: Welcome to Cheesy Bowling.
Dan: Day 5's challenge is Cheesy Bowling, and this is the final challenge Relative Race fans asked to bring back as part of this tenth anniversary.
Teams work together to roll a giant zorb ball into barrel pins filled with cheese.
With one teammate blindfolded, the other must remain in the zorb ball directing their teammate to pick up and deliver the cheese.
Then it's back to the start line to fill in two cheese wheels.
Fill both wheels with cheese to complete this challenge.
Jamie: All right, let's go, let's go!
Curtis: Let's go.
Shawn: Ah!
[tense music] We're heading to the challenge and when I looked back, I see Shawn's on the ground.
Shawn: So, my leg slipped, and I pulled a muscle in my, my groin, or somewhere in that area.
And, if I remember, uh, from past seasons, this challenge is very, very active.
Uh, I just don't know if I'm going to be able to compete with as much pain as I'm in.
It was really painful.
I bursted into tears.
[laughs] [sighs] Took all the air out of my lungs.
It, it took me a good few minutes to get standing upright.
Curtis: How are you feeling?
Shawn: I don't, I don't know if I'm gonna be able to do this challenge, man.
And, like, that's, that's the thing that's-- I don't wanna let you down, I don't wanna let down anybody I've met so far, 'cause I feel like, I feel like this is personal for me.
I feel like... my health has always been something that's kept me down.
And I've always overcome the things as far as my health stuff.
But, like, I don't, I don't know if I'm gonna be able to do this challenge.
Curtis: We're not doing it.
So, look, dude, you don't have to apologize, it could've happened to either one of us.
So, we'll just, you know, deal with whatever we have to deal with, take whatever we have to take, and, you know?
You don't need to put yourself out to hurt yourself any worse than you are.
So, we're not doing it.
Period.
- Thank you.
Curtis: Nah, it's cool.
It's cool, bro.
Seriously.
You know, we're aware there is a 20-minute penalty because we didn't finish the challenge.
But, you know, we did really well traveling here to Chattanooga.
And, you know, we're gonna rely on our navigating skills and hopefully that'll be enough to get us through the day.
Dan: With Shawn's unexpected injury, Team Blue will sit out today's challenge, and an additional twenty minutes will be added to their time for the day.
[techno-pop music] ♪ Hannah: [screaming] [pins clattering] Alex: Get there!
So, once you knock over the barrels you have to put on blackout goggles to search for the cheese, and you can't see anything with these things on!
Jaime: There's one there, yup!
Alex: The strategy was to-- whoever was pushing or reaching for the cheese to listen, do not do anything that's not being called to you.
Hannah: Quickly, quickly.
Quickly!
Ah!
[pins clatter] Jamie: We won first place yesterday, we won a challenge benefit.
So we get to use blurry goggles instead of blackout goggles like everybody else.
Jansen: Let's look for yellow!
Jamie: Where you at?
Jansen: I'm right here.
Put me in a hole.
Jaime: There you go, you got it.
Now come back to my voice.
Scott: Picture the cheese is a can.
Where is cheese?
Jamie: Here!
Jansen: There's more yellow!
We can see all the colors.
So, as we had to put our cheese in our bowl, we could run around and find orange just fine, we didn't have to go in the dark.
Jamie: Yeah, that was, that was a very big benefit, and we had a strategy to put all the cheese into the ball.
And then, as we took off, just let the cheese roll with us as the ball's rollin'.
Jaime: Nope, keep comin' you got stand up, stand up, stand up.
On our first run we had about 9 pieces, so I-- three of them went right inside my, uh, my stretch pants.
And then, uh, the rest, I-I kinda balled up and held on like I was in a claw machine, and I tried to use my momentum to help Alex so he wouldn't have to push me all the way.
Jaime: Go, go, go, go, go.
Alex: Roll, roll, roll!
Jaime: I got it, go!
Alex: I don't think the other teams would have been fortunate to have thought of stuffing cheese in their clothes.
Hannah: No, so come here!
Come here!
I'm right here!
It's really difficult directing the other person finding the cheese, because that ball echoes.
So, you're kinda just yellin' as loud as you could and hopin' that the other person heard you.
Okay!
Scott: Okay.
Hannah: Now, roll me back!
Jaime: Get me to the table, let's go!
♪ Hannah: Here's one.
Scott: Yeah, it was, uh, really, really tough.
We brought back, on the first round, only two pieces of cheese.
- Yeah, and so, I'm starting to wonder how may pieces the other teams were able to get.
Jamie: Here, here!
Oh yeah!
Nine pieces of cheese the first time!
Jaime: Let's go, let's go, we got four more!
All right.
Alex: Get in, get in, get in!
Jaime: Not too bad for our first run!
Now all we need is four more pieces of cheese and we are done!
Alex: All right, here we go.
[uptempo music] All right, ready go!
♪ [bowling pins crash] ♪ [bowling pins crash] Alex: All right!
[crashing pins] Scott: Keep going straight!
Alex: No, go straight, over that barrel!
There you go!
There's one in that one!
Scott: Keep going straight!
Jansen: Where's the other ones?
Scott: Down with your hands.
Alex: There we go, got it.
All right, that's good!
Jaime: Go!
Scott: All right, let's go back.
Jaime: Lay down, lay down, lay down.
Alex: No, I got 'em!
Hannah: Here!
Take it!
Oh!
♪ Jaime: Time!
Alex: I thought we did pretty well.
- I think we wrecked it.
[both sigh] - That was easy.
- That was... that was cheesy.
Jansen: "Your relative lives at 3292 Cumberlin Lane."
Jamie: "Centralia, Illinois."
Let's go!
- Centralia, Illinois.
Jamie: Come on, bring it!
- "Your relative lives at 5 Amy Drive Windsor, New Jersey."
- Let's get outta here, we gotta go.
[bowling pins crash] Hannah: Okay!
Scott: Hurry, hurry, hurry!
[map rustling] - Windsor, Windsor, New Jersey.
Hannah: Bend down, stop!
Bend down!
Left!
Left, dad!
Right!
Right there!
- The turtle won the race.
Slow and steady is kind of what I was trying to go for.
[panting] Hannah: No, you-- Scott: You can't get-- Hannah: You don't get to touch it!
Okay, we did it!
When we finally get that last block of cheese, it was such a relief.
We are going to-o-o... "Your relative lives at 98 Sunview Drive Camdenton, Missouri."
Both: Okay.
Hannah: Come on.
Scott: This might be a fan favorite, but it is not my favorite.
♪ Dan: With the challenge now left in the dust, all teams are now in a full-on race to find their relatives.
- It's looks like avenues run this way, but I don't know.
Jamie: Go, let's go let's go let's go!
You're gonna go to Centralia.
- Hang on, let me finish chewing, then we can do it.
Hand me that water.
Jaime: I'm looking for the-- for Windsor, in Heightstown.
Alex: Finding the relatives house today was more than a challenge.
We had no idea where to go, and when we went to ask people where we could find it, no one knew.
We gotta find a place without using a GPS.
We asked a guy, hey do you know where this street is?
This isn't a big town at all.
And he goes, uh no, wait, which Windsor?
East Windsor or West Windsor?
And we go, we don't know!
- There's more than one Windsor?
- There's more than one?
Curtis: Excuse me, we're kind of lost, do you know where South Highland Park Avenue is?
Shawn: He said of course I can help you, and he's like, where are you looking for?
Oh, okay.
Man 1: I'm old school, bruh.
Curtis: [chuckles] Thank you.
Shawn: And you know what, he gives us pretty much turn-by-turn directions to get to Highland Park Avenue.
Curtis: Okay, so left, then right.
Man 1: Left then right.
- Thank you!
- Thank you so much, man.
See, that's that Tennessee hospitality.
Jamie: Left on, uh... - It means we're gonna go back up to this uh... - Yes, so go back up to where you started.
Curtis: Yeah, that's 504, okay, we're going the right... Shawn: That's 508.
- Excuse me, sir.
Man 2: Yeah.
- We are bad lost, we're looking for Sunview Drive, are you familiar with Sunview Drive?
Man 2: Sunview Drive.
Hannah: There was a guy by his car, and he looks up, and he was like, oh, well the sign where you're going is right there.
Jamie: After getting zero help from the locals, we finally stumbled upon the correct Windsor Street.
Alex: That's the address?
Five?
Jaime: Five.
Twelve, eleven.
Well, we're getting closer.
Jamie: I'm excited now.
I have no clue who we're gonna meet.
Shawn: 705, 707, it's this next one, right here?
- Right, no it's right here.
Scott: Found it.
- Oh, yes it is!
Sunview!
So we just drove straight, and the very first house we saw was the correct one.
- Look!
There it is, there it is!
- Oh my gosh!
Hannah: We did it!
Scott: We found it!
- We did it!
That was such a good call on our part!
Scott: Woo!
Hannah: 98 Sunview Drive!
♪ Hi!
- Hi.
- I'm Scott.
- Hi, how are you?
Hannah: Hi, I'm Hannah.
- Hi, Hannah.
- Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.
Scott: Nice to meet you.
- Did you guys have a good trip down here?
- We did, and who are you?
- My name is Mary.
[gasping] - I'm your big sister.
Scott: Hi, Mary.
Mary: Hi.
♪ - I'm Mary Potter, and I'm related to Scott on his father's side.
I'm his big sister, which makes me Hannah's aunt.
- How are you doing?
- It's so nice to meet you!
Mary: It's so great to meet you guys, I'm so excited.
[laughs] I automatically knew he was my brother, you could just see it in his face, he looks just like me and my older brother, Steve, and that face just staring back at me, he just, it really, he belongs.
It just, you can see it just by looking at him.
So, it was great, it was really great.
Scott: I'm really looking forward to talking to Mary and learning more about my biological father, more of the story, more pieces to this story.
And the things that I'm looking forward to all of us now doing together.
- I have never really found it easy to talk to people that I don't know, and the minute they introduced themselves to me it was just, came out.
And it's so easy and just flows so wonderful, it's just amazing.
All right, well, come on, let's get out of the rain, why don't you guys come in.
- Yeah, let's go in.
Mary: Yeah, come on in.
♪ - Oh, boy, here we go dude.
You ready for this?
We pull up to the house and we see a lovely young lady outside waiting for us.
So far I've convinced myself that every person that walks out of that house is gonna be Jaime's relative.
You know, I told myself that I'm not quite ready for the emotional response, but, sure enough, I realize she looks very familiar.
Hi, I'm Alex.
- I'm Jaime.
- Hi, I'm Maia.
- Hi, and, uh, who are you related to?
- I’m related to Alex.
Alex: How are you related to me?
- I’m your sister.
- Another sister?
You’re kidding!
Maia: Nope.
- I had no idea!
What?
I’m so, I’m so baffled right now, I had no idea.
Wait, how are you related to me?
- I am your mother’s daughter.
Alex: Really?
So you're Kara’s sister?
Maia: Yeah.
- She said nothing!
- I know!
[laughs] Also-- Jaime: Oh, wow, I see how-- okay.
Maia: --my middle name is also Alexandra.
♪ Alex: I had no idea.
Are you older than, younger than I am?
Maia: I’m younger than you.
- You’re kidding me.
You’re kidding me!
Jaime: You got a little sister, bro.
Alex: Oh my gosh!
Jaime: [laughs] Alex: That’s amazing!
I was not expecting to meet a sister two days in a row.
Ugh, wow.
My family gets bigger every day, this is crazy.
Maia: When Alex and I first met, and he hugged me, um, [emotionally] it was all I could do not to just cry ‘cause I was so happy to see him and to finally meet him.
So that hug kind of felt like something I had wanted to do for many years.
Alex: Oh gosh.
♪ It’s so good to meet you.
Maia: Yeah, it’s nice to meet you, too.
Alex: Did you know about me, too?
- Um, not until I was, like, a teenager.
Alex: Really?
Maia: I mean, it’s really surreal because I’ve, uh, been looking for you for a long time.
Alex: Really?
- Um, but it’s fantastic.
- It’s good to meet you, too.
Maia: [laughs tearfully] Sorry.
Alex: It’s okay!

And it’s very heartwarming.
She’d known about me and I didn’t know about her.
It’s nice to know that I have a little sister, and it’s nice to know that she’s also doing well.

I’m Kent Shenefield, I’m Jamie’s uncle, and I’m Jansen’s great-uncle.
- So, my uncle!
Kent: I am.
- So you and Jack are brothers?
Kent: We are.
Jamie: All right.
Kent: We are.
That’s, that’s all I need to know!
[laughs] ‘Cause I just found out about him last week!
[laughs] Kent: Did ya?
Jamie: Yeah.
- Amazing.
Jamie: Yeah, I just, uh, I didn’t have a clue.
- Well, maybe I can fill in some of those gaps.
Jansen: I hope so, yeah!
Jamie: I’m hopin’ so.
I sure am.
- I believe I can.
Jamie: It’s just changing my life, just to be honest with you.
Kent: I’m sure it is.
- ‘Cause I-- my whole life I’ve had, uh, no brothers, no sisters, no aunts, no-- I mean, now I’ve got a bunch of ‘em!
[laughs] - I think I’ve met more family members than I actually have in my family circle, [laughs] in the last couple days.
Kent: Well we’re gonna throw some more pieces in the jigsaw for ya.
Jamie: Okay, all right!
- I’m, uh, proud I get to do that.
- Well, I’m gl-- I’m, I’m glad!
Kent: I’m honored.
I’m honored I get to do that.
Jamie: I’m glad.
- It was just a flood of emotions.
I mean, I don’t know how to really put that in words.
It’s, it’s so personal.
It’s just one of those things where you just know.
Well, I'm thinking we got a lot more to talk about.

Kent: I'll let you smell the ribs.
Jamie: [laughs] Oh!

My name's Curtis, this is Shawn.
Woman 2: I'm Tian.
Woman 1: I'm La Jayda.
- Nice to meet you!
How are we related?
Tian: I'm your cousin on your dad's side.
- And I'm your sister.
[sentimental music] Curtis: [laughs] - [laughs] ♪ - Hearing the words 'I'm your sister' for the first time was something that I've been waiting to hear literally all my life.
It was a, um, amazing feeling.
- My name is La Jayda and I am Curtis's sister, and we share the same father.
Curtis: My sister, huh?
La Jayda: Mm-hm!
[laughs] Hugging my brother for the first time felt unreal.
- There's no words that would do it justice, how I felt.
Hugging my sister for the first time.
La Jayda: You look just like him.
[laughs] Curtis: [laughs] I keep hearin' that!
La Jayda: You do.
Tian: Yeah.
Curtis: That, that I look him.
La Jayda: The first time I saw my brother's face, I instantly thought of my dad.
Tian: You look just like him, yeah!
Curtis: Come on, cuz.
- You guys got the same eyes.
Curtis: Really?
- Yes!
Curtis: You're looking like it's scary, like, wow, it's kinda scary how much you guys look alike.
Tian and La Jayda: Yeah.
Curtis: My sister, how old are you?
- Twenty-two.
- Mmm, wow, okay.
It caught me off guard, um, [laughs] with my age, you know, being 54 and, you know, finding out I have a sister 22.
[laughingly] I mean, I have a child older than my younger sister, so yeah, I was surprised.
I-I have so many questions, of course, so-- La Jayda: Mm-hm.
- You know, I hope... yeah, you can tell me-- answer some of these questions for me.
- I'll try to!
Do you want to come inside?
- Most definitely.
Jayda: Come on!
Curtis and La Jayda: [laugh] ♪ [gentle acoustic guitar] Scott: So, it's j-- I know, it's, like, really exciting.
Mary: I-It is, really a unique and new experience and I just think it's amazing.
I'm just so excited that, that I have a baby brother!
[laughs] There are so many emotions that are running through my head right now that I don't even know which one to focus on at the moment.
- So, I've heard a little bit about our, my biological father, our-- from Steve.
What, uh, what-- Mary: We didn't really grow up around him, but I do have one picture of him and me when I was about 13.
So, this would've been the first time that I met him.
- Okay.
Hannah: Oh my goodness.
Scott: Wow.
Mary: He's about your guys's height.
And from what I understand, he still looks the same way, even though, you know, it's been a few years since I was 13!
[chuckles] - Wow.
Mary: [laughs] - Sharing about my dad it's, it's not that difficult.
He's not really been in my life a whole lot, and, so it's just not something that I, I think about.
But it's gonna be really nice to tell him the things that I do know about our father.
And some of the experiences that I did get to have with him the few times that we did meet.
You know, everybody has a story about why they do things and how they do things and the reasons and you never really know what happened.
And, you know, with him being the father, I know he was an absentee father most of our lives, but I don't know necessarily that was his choice.
And I know from experience when it's not your choice, and you have to be absent from your child... that there's things that you do in your heart to barricade that pain so that you don't have to, every day, live with the fact that you can't be with the child that you love.
You know?
He, he did what he needed to do when the time came about.
Hannah: Mary really is so compassionate.
Here she's grown up and things haven't been great, and instead of talking about it or being worrying about it, her first concern was that what happened to her happened to dad.
That he had to grow up without a father, that he had to grow up without a family there for him.
And he, as, you know, he's so fortunate because, there-- he has the best parents, I have the best grandparents.
She, immediately, was just concerned for her, you know, baby brother, like an older sibling would, and we just met!
So, she had so much compassion already, and you could just see it.
Scott: God has just provided so many blessings in my life, you cannot imagine.
And I just...
I'm just grateful for what I have, and now I just wanted to be able to come and meet, you know, all the folks that, uh, are part of my relatives and just kinda say, hey, I'm living in the south, how are we kin?
Mary: Yeah!
Scott and Mary: [laugh] Scott: It's humbling.
And I don't feel deserving of this.
Because I've already had the best parents anybody could ever ask for.
I have an incredible family that loves me unconditionally.
I have what would have been a complete stranger six months ago [snap] loving me unconditionally.
♪ ♪ Curtis: Tell me about our dad's side.
- Most of our family is in Oklahoma or in Texas.
Curtis: Mm-hm.
La Jayda: For the most part, um, my dad, he's really involved with everybody and he tries to get people, like, to come down to Missouri to visit.
Curtis: Mm-hm.
- We just try to keep a close connection.
Curtis: It's nice to know that my father keeps the family together even though there's long distances between them, and, you know, I really believe that if my father had known about me, we definitely would have had a relationship.
- Would you like to see more recent pictures of our dad?
- Yes, I would.
I would love to see that.
La Jayda: I got you.
Curtis: [laughs] La Jayda: This one right here, this is my mom.
Curtis: Mm-hm.
La Jayda: Yeah, they try to take pictures, but they really can't take pictures.
Curtis: [laughs] You know, seeing my father, um, as an adult, and, you know, lookin' at myself as a, you know, grown man, you know, middle-aged man, it was familiar, um... Actually, um, I hope I age as gracefully as it seems like he's aging.
[laughs] Wow, he's got that salt-and-pepper thing going, too, huh?
La Jayda: Mm-hm.
- I mean, I look at these pictures and...
I see a lot of myself, as far as around the eyes.
[laughs] That's just like a little devilish smile, so to speak.
You know, where you just kinda like, yeah, you know, just-- I'm lovin' this coordination thing because that's me all day every day.
You know, everything has to match from head to toe.
Uh, [laughs] and he just, uh, looks like he has this young vibe about himself.
So, it's like, you know, to be, you know, in his 70s, he looks like he's in good shape and he's takin' care of hisself.
I mean, I just...
I see a lot of similarities in... as far as the way he looks and also it sounds like some personality traits as well, so... yeah.
It's crazy.
It's really so cool seeing where I get my traits from and how close the similarities are.
And after looking at the photos of my father, my sister, La Jayda had one more surprise for me.
Woman 4: [on video call] Hi!
- Hello, how ar-- [laughs] Hi, how are you?
Woman 4: I'm well, and you?
Curtis: I'm doing good!
Okay, this-- who am I talkin' with?
- My name is Simona.
[laughs] So, I believe that you are my brother.
Curtis: Okay, this is a complete shock!
So, I find out I have another sister named Simona, who... [laughs] ...lives in Atlanta, Georgia, and I was completely shocked.
- So very nice to meet you, I'm sorry that, um, I didn't come in person, we came down with COVID this past weekend, so... Curtis: Oh no, no, no apologies necessary!
I'm, I, I am so happy to meet you!
Talking to my sister Simona, uh, she seemed to be very grounded, um, very real, uh, very authentic.
And, you know, someone that I can easily talk to and relate, relate to.
Oh, we're definitely gonna talk.
The pleasure was mine, sis, I-I really appreciate you takin' the time to talk to me.
- Anytime, okay?
Curtis: All right, I'll talk to you soon!
Simona: All right, bye!
Curtis: Bye!
[laughs] You know, I am grateful for having the opportunity to meet siblings and I can't be more grateful than that.
I mean, it's just...
I'm a l-- I'm overwhelmed.
♪ Alex: Thank you so much for being a part of this.
Maia: Yeah, it's so great that they were able to put us together.
- Yeah.
I, I had no idea, which is, uh, is mind-blowing, you know?
- I found out that Alex existed, uh, when I was [sniffs] I think 15 or 16, and I've wanted to find him since then.
So, have you seen any recent photos of our mom?
- I have not.
♪ Oh my gosh.
Oh, wow.
We have the, we have the very same goofy grin.
Look at her at the Louvre, that's so cool!
My sister, Maia, showed me some current pictures of my mom.
And, uh, that kinda took my breath away, seeing those pictures of her really puts a face to the name for me.
I'd, I-- incredibly grateful to my adoptive family for the life that they gave me and things like that, but I've always had the mystery about where it is that I come from.
How it is that I am the way I am, you know what I mean?
I've always been a weirdo, and-- - [laughs] Alex: --you know, I've, I've embraced the weird.
Um, but at the same time, it's been pretty difficult growing up and, and being that weirdo.
Um, it's only been in the last, you know, five to ten years or so that I've started to say, I don't care, I'm gonna embrace it.
And, you know, it's only then that I've started to really become... happier.
- It breaks my heart to think that he ever thought that he wouldn't be well-received.
I know, I-I think that him and my mom both were fearful that if they, you know, put themselves out there and the other one was not into it, that it would be too painful.
Um, but it was difficult to kinda not be the one in charge of making that decision.
Because I would have found him when I was 15.
- To watch my sister, uh, Maia, get emotional just learning about me, uh, was kind of a big surprise, you know, the-- I don't often have people that break down when I tell them my story.
You know, and it-- I know that it's a little different seeing's how she's been searching for me, and wondering who I am.
- Sh-she definitely wants to be part of your life.
- Okay.
- We all do.
And, um, you know... we're a, a big family, um, and I'm not close to everybody.
But there's a lot of people that I am close to, and all of them want you to be a part of our life.
- [whispers] That's awesome.
That means a lot to me to be wanted for this, this whole time and... you know, we weren't all that far apart, actually.
- I am so excited to have Alex back in my life.
I can't wait to take him to meet everyone in our family.
He's gonna love them, and they're all gonna love Alex.
♪ Kent: For this part of your journey, is there any doors I can open for you that-- Jamie: Well... Kent: --you're anxious to know, or?
Jamie: Well, first thing, is I notice your last name's different.
Kent: Right.
Well my name's Shenefield because your grandmother met my dad, and, uh, I'm a product of that marriage.
I'm the only one from that marriage.
Jamie: I had no clue.
Uh, that's, that's, that's something that I'm learning today for the first time.
- You know from zero to 10, 11, somewhere in there, I was essentially an only child also.
And then I, I think about 11 or 12 is when your father come into my life.
It was like overnight, I had a dream come true!
I had a big brother!
It, uh, it was a wonderful thing.
Uh, you know, without being too sappy about my big brother, who I'd, you know, would gladly give a kidney to, [laughs] you know, lay down my life!
Jamie: Right.
Kent: The guy has just been my, uh, he's been my mentor, my counselor, my best friend!
You know, I got lucky to have a best friend of that caliber... Jamie: Right.
Kent: ...and be able to call him my brother!
I've watched him do some, uh, amazing, amazing things.
Getting to tell Jamie and Jansen what my brother meant to me, um, was a highlight, probably a highlight of my whole relationship with my oldest brother, Billy Jack.
And, uh, seein' how it affected 'em.
Jamie: When they called, got us up there to see 'im the other day, he didn't look good.
'Cause he was still, he was unresponsive, and everything, and... then 24 hours later he was wanting to talk to us.
- You've charged his batteries.
[laughs] Jamie: I was, I was like, you're kidding me!
And, from what I understand, he don't remember a lot about that day because he was still on medication and everything, but, but, uh, from what I'm hearing he's, he's doing a lot better, and that's, uh... Kent: I think that's about his ninth or tenth life.
[laughs] Jamie: Yeah.
- You know one of those?
Kent and Jamie: [laugh] Kent: He's tough as nails, man, he's tough as nails!
- Yeah, I'm just, I'm overwhelmed, and just be honest with you.
I'm o-- I'm on information overload is what I'm on, right now.
Because I can't, I can't seem to process everything that's going on.
What kinda picture you got there?
Kent: It's a good one!
It's a good one.
Jamie: Is it a good one?
- It's a dandy!
If you don't mind, I'm gonna, I'm gonna go ahead and show it to you.
There's your father and your stepmother.
Jamie: And this is... Is she still living'?
Kent: Mm-hm.
And you're gonna, you're gonna find out that this probably one of the, one of the best women you'll ever meet.
Jamie: To know I have a stepmom means everything to me.
You know, my mom, my grandma, has been my mom my whole life.
Since I was three years old when my real mother was killed in a car accident.
And, uh, which, I didn't know my dad, and now finding out that he was married this whole time and...
I haven't, I just-- words can't explain how I feel right now.
Not only is he alive, but now that he's-- his wife's still alive, and, and I mean, I don't know, I mean, I may have brothers and sisters I don't know.
- Go ahead and ask that question!
- So, have I got... [cries quietly] Kent: [laughs] Yeah, I'll make it easy on you, you sure do.
Jamie: [inhales sharply] Kent: You got two brothers that, uh, you're gonna, you're gonna love 'em.
Jamie: [sighs] Jansen: Huh, I got two uncles, that's cool.
Jamie: It's occurred to me that I might have siblings in the past, but I never thought for a moment that I had two brothers.
I mean, it just, yeah, I mean, I've thought it, and I've hoped it, and, uh... but I-I never knew.
I truly never knew.
Kent: Really good dudes.
Both of 'em hearts as big as this room, and I'm sure they inherited that from their father and their mother.
That was, that was special.
Because of what I knew Jamie had been looking for.
I think their breath was taken away.
Jamie: To have Kent give me this information meant everything.
Because I know from talking to him the bond that him and my dad have had.
And I know that for him to be able to be the one to do this was amazing.
And I know he, he felt honored to be able to do it, I mean he, he shared that with us.
And that, that means the world to me.
And, uh, that just means that he's gonna love us just as much as the rest of 'em is.
And he's just gonna be a part of the family immediately.
I mean, and I know that.
- He already is a part of the family.
- Yes!
Yes, it's amazing.
♪ [tense music] Dan: Day 5 of Relative Race is coming to a close as teams are halfway through their journey, and are all tied up with one strike each.
Those standings will change tonight.
Hannah: We had a little bit of a rough start, but I think once we got up on the road and stuff we really got our groove going.
I think our photo challenge was fantastic.
Scott: I think we're gonna win the photo challenge today.
Jansen: I think I could've done better with the photo.
But we sent what we sent, and we'll have to accept what we get.
- Do you think people will understand what it is?
That it's a photo of a truck driver?
- I don't know.
Shawn: I hurt myself the first time in, so, then this one was just like, wow.
Curtis: Yeah, things happen, we're-- we'll be okay.
We'll bounce back.
Alex: Yeah, we're always nervous about the call.
Regardless of how well we've done.
It's kind of dread but also I'm very excited for it at the same time.
♪ Dan: Here we are, teams, Day 5, the halfway point of Relative Race.
Let's turn our attention to Team Blue!
When you got to your challenge location, tell us what happened.
Shawn: Well, we got to our challenge, and read the card, and then right when we went to go take off, I ate it.
I pulled a muscle really bad and I could not compete.
That was a bummer, it really was.
- So to be clear to the rest of the teams, they had to timeout on their challenge, and that is 20 minutes.
Curtis, I'm wondering, here you are wanting to support this man that you're on this journey with, how were you feeling in this moment?
- I'm fine with the decision that we made together to just basically timeout, because health is more important than anything else and we're here to meet relatives.
Yeah, there was no issues with that.
Dan: Wow.
Shawn you must feel like you've got quite the partner there.
- Yeah, I owe this man so much.
So much.
- That is teamwork!
Scott and Hannah, once you arrived and you realized your clock has stopped, who was waiting for you today?
Scott: My big sister.
This is Mary.
Mary: Hello!
Dan: Hi, Mary!
Wow.
Can you believe those words just came out of your mouth, Scott?
This is your big sister.
Scott: A-as soon as she walked out the door, there wasn't even a doubt.
It was like [snap] that's my sister.
- Wow.
The connections are real.
And I am so grateful that we get to experience them with you.
And for Team Red, Alex, another great day for you.
Yesterday, I got to meet my big sister.
Today I got to meet my little sister, who I did not know about.
This is Maia.
Maia: Hi!
Dan: Oh my goodness, can you believe you have a big brother and you met him today?
- It was such a joy.
I've looked forward to it for a long time.
- Well, congratulations.
And there's more family waiting.
[chuckles] Jamie and Jansen, you head out of Arkansas.
You're figuring you might meet somebody that you don't already know.
Alex: [laughs] Dan: How did your family grow today?
Jamie: Well, Dan, I got to meet my Uncle Kent, who I did not know about!
And, not only did we get to meet him... he showed me pictures of my stepmom, and I found out today I have two brothers.
Jaime: Wow.
Jamie: And I've never known about it.
♪ [sniffs] Dan: Wow.
Well, let's hope this journey has more surprises waiting for you then.
Congratulations, Jamie and Jansen.
And that leads us to Team Blue.
And Curtis, today was not about one discovery or even two!
- Uh, yes, today was a really, really good day.
Today, I got the opportunity to meet my little sister, La Jayda.
La Jayda: Hi!
Curtis: And my cousin, Tian.
Tian: Hi.
Curtis: [laughs] Dan: Your family is filled with beautiful people!
Curtis: Yes, it is!
[laughs] Yes, it is!
And I was able to meet another sister, Simona, and that was by, uh, FaceTime!
- Wow!
Curtis: Yes.
Dan: You added not one leaf on the tree, but three in one stop.
Curtis: That is correct, yes, I did.
- That is the beauty of family!
You meet one member, and you realize that those branches just blossom and grow and they have others waiting.
What a great day for all of you.
[suspenseful music] The times are in for this halfway mark of Relative Race.
Every team has one strike.
Today, somebody will earn their second strike.
Finishing in first place... you didn't have any problem leaving Arkansas, you guys killed it, congratulations to the cowboys, Jamie and Jansen.

- Finishing just 60 seconds behind Team Black, congratulations to Team Red.
Jaime: [laughing] [clap] Good job, guy!
Dan: And so it comes down to Team Blue and Team Green.
Team Green, you had a rough start, but you finished strong.
Team Blue, you timed out of your challenge because of a physical injury.
Will that cost you?
Finishing in third place, ten minutes over their allotted time, Curtis and Shawn, Team Blue.
Team Green, Scott and Hannah, you finished 13 minutes over your allotted time.
However, we have photos to take a look at.
The subject today was portraits, and each and every day, these photos are incredibly important, and who finishes in first and who picks up the strike.
Team Red, who doesn't love a beautiful puppy?
Team Blue, I love the joy in your photo.
Team Green, what a beard!
And Team Black, you captured everything in this man's eyes.
The fans made it clear, in the end, they voted for Team Green.
Team Green, your photo won, you picked up five minutes.
That means you moved from fourth place to third.
Which means, Team Blue, you have picked up your second strike of the race.
Team Black, you finished in first place and you pick up the next day benefit.
Tomorrow, you will be able to freeze your clock for three minutes any time during the day.
At your discretion.
Congratulations on making it to the halfway point.
I can't wait to see what Day 6 brings.

So, we’re the first team to win two photo challenges, and it feels really good!
Shawn: I’m happy that we still got to get to the relatives.
I’m happy that we still have another day in this race.
And that’s all we need is at least one more chance to turn this whole thing around.
