Mitchell: [gasps] Dan: And picked up Breathless.
Let's hope that Team Blue really can't hold their breath for very long.
Team Black finished in last place, but they had immunity.
No one picks up a strike.
All: Yay.
Geselle's morning with her niece, NicKeya, brought tears to everyone.
- Miss my best friend, you know?
[crying] Geselle: I felt like my sister was in the midst of that hug between us today.
Dan: Trinesha met her cousin, MacKenzie.
- I'm your cousin.
- Can I give you a hug?
Dan: And Patrick met his sister, Lindsay.
- Hi.
Pat: Hi.
- I'm Lindsay, your sister.
- Yes, I know.
Lindsay: Always asked my parents for a brother.
[laughs] A big brother.
- She said she always wanted an older brother, and now she has.
♪ Dan: DNA tells us who we are and where we came from.
Following their own DNA, four teams are racing... Geselle: Woo!
[honking] - Are you kidding me?
Dan: To win $50,000... Mitchell: Go, go, go, go, go, go!
Dan: And to find their family.
[knocking] Singer: ♪ Oh, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh-oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh-oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh-oh ♪ ♪ Dan: It's Day 6 of Relative Race, and Team Blue won yesterday and picked up the Breathless benefit for today.
Trinesha: We're feeling really good today and making it more than halfway without a strike and having our benefit for today is just what we need to keep us going.
- We don't know what to expect from the benefit, but we look forward to finding out.
Dan: Teams Green and Black both have two strikes.
Lizzy: We are definitely feeling the pressure knowing that there's still four days to go and we can't get another strike.
Pat: Another must win day.
Callie: Yep.
Well, they can't send me home on my birthday.
- Yeah-- - [laughs] - I think it's a law somewhere or somethin'.
Taquida: Day 6, no strikes, and we plan on keepin' it that way.
Dan: As dawn breaks, all four teams are spending valuable time with newfound family.
Pat: I still think we're gonna be headin' north, so more than likely... - I know, but we've got Minnesota right here and we've got Iowa right here.
Pat: The night with Lindsay was awesome.
Probably up a little too late.
Got some sleep, and so now, uh, time to go.
- [laughs] Trinesha: We had a wonderful time last night spending time with my cousin MacKenzie, and I don't wanna leave, but we're looking forward to spending a lot more time together.
Andy: We wake up at Junior and Gale's, and they are incredibly gracious.
Lizzy: We know we're not going north.
Junior: Yeah, unless you take the boat.
Lizzy: Yeah.
We also spend a little time looking over the atlas, because these guys know Girard and the surrounding area like the back of their hand.
Geselle: My nephew Lequal has a little baby boy named Azair.
He is so adorable, and I got to spend time with him this morning.
I'mma put you in my suitcase and take you back with me.
Your daddy gon' have to come get you.
Taquida: Nope, they not lettin' that happen.
Geselle: I know, right?
Mitchell: It was a good night.
At least we got some sleep.
[phone chimes] Oh, oh, we got a text, honey, we got a text.
- Congratulations on finishing in first and picking Breathless as your first-place prize.
So, here's what happens next.
Your relative is going to film each of you separately, one at a time, holding your breath for as long as you can.
That's the key.
Hold it as long as you possibly can.
Why?
Because all of the other teams will have to watch that video on the clock before they can take off.
So, breathe deep, and good luck.
Mitchell: All right, let's do this.
Can you record us, please?
- Yes.
Mitchell: Today started off a little different.
Once we recorded us holding our breath, the other teams on the clock had to watch said video and could not leave until the video was done.
Once they do finish the video, we sent them off to their locations and their time starts.
[exhales] - Oh my gosh, that was a long time.
Gale: That's really your easiest-- Andy: One second, guys.
We got a text.
Taquida: Oh, we got a text.
Callie: "Good morning, teams, and welcome to Day 6 of Relative Race."
Mitchell: "Your Breathless video "has been sent to the other teams.
Today you will be traveling to Jeffersonville, Indiana."
Taquida: "For the rest of you, "you'll discover your destinations after watchin' the attached video."
What?
Mitchell: "Your time starts now."
Callie: "Your time starts now."
[gasps] They had Breathless.
- Oh, no.
See what happened.
Geselle: Uh-oh.
Taquida: Okay.
Andy: 'Kay, let's see what they have to say.
MacKenzie: Okayyy!
Mitchell: Oh, it was nice meeting you.
MacKenzie: Oh wow.
Trinesha: Thank you.
MacKenzie: All right.
Wow.
Callie: Okay, here we go.
♪ Mitchell: Hopefully, the benefit we received last night will help us give us that edge to come in first again, 'cause most of these races have been based on one, two, even three-minute increments.
♪ Both: Thank you!
Mitchell: For the help!
♪ - Oh man, she's gonna, can hold her breath for a long time.
Taquida: Get you some air.
Geselle: Get up off that.
[laughs] ♪ Mitchell: Right at the light, and then follow signs for 65 North.
- Yep.
- Come on, Mitchell, you gotta breathe.
Breathe!
Geselle: Breathe, sir, breathe.
Pat: Wow, they are good, though.
Taquida: Let go.
Let go, please.
Geselle: Let it go.
Taquida: Any time now.
Andy: Come on, you gotta breathe sometime.
Mitchell: 65 North, yep, 65 North.
So, we need to go that way.
Pat: Look at this!
- You're killin' me, kid.
Breathe!
Taquida: Whoa!
Callie: Oh my gosh.
- Mitchell!
Breathe!
- [exhales] Trinesha: Oh my gosh!
Pat: That was a long time.
- Oh, man!
I thought he was gonna pass out!
- We were able to hold our breath about two minutes between the two of us, so hopefully that gives us the competitive edge to come in first again.
Team Black, you're headed to Montello, Wisconsin.
- Montello, Wisconsin.
- Team Green, you're headed to Franklin, Pennsylvania.
- And Team Red, you're headed to Avondale, Louisiana.
Taquida: Okay.
- Would you mind showing us on the map where Franklin is?
Gale: We can do that.
Taquida: Let's go.
Geselle: See you later!
Pat: Oh, it's right there.
Callie: What?
Ah.
Okay.
- Yep, 65 North, we're good.
Yeah, we're goin' the right way.
Andy: Thank you so much for everything.

- They seem pretty confident-- - Yep.

Pat: All right, let's go.
Geselle: So, navigating to Avondale, not too worried about it.
I used to work in Avondale.

[laughs] ♪ Mitchell: Oh, there it is.

Dan: With a slight head start going into today's race, Team Blue, Mitchell and Trinesha, are making their way from Nashville, Tennessee, to Jeffersonville, Indiana.
They have an allotted time of three hours and seven minutes.
Callie: There it is, there's the Wisconsin sign.
Both: Hello, Wisconsin!
- Woo, woo!
We're back.
Dan: Heading back to their home state, Team Black, Patrick and Callie, are leaving Rockford, Illinois, and heading to Montello, Wisconsin, with an allotted time of 2 hours and 16 minutes.
- That's 215 right there.
What are we trying to get onto?
- We're trying to get to Exit 9.
We get on the road from Junior and Gale's and we know exactly how to get on I-90, which is where we need to be.
- And these are counting down or up?
That was six.
Let's see what this sign up here says.
- No!
However, we get on 90 going west when we should have got on 90 going east.
No.
- Okay, so we need to turn around.
- Yep.
- Okay.
Dan: Starting off in the wrong direction, Team Green, Andy and Lizzy, are making their way from Girard, Pennsylvania, to Franklin, PA.
They have an allotted time today of 1 hour and 31 minutes.
Lizzy: Two minutes can be all that it takes to be in last place.
♪ - What's up, y'all.
It is the Red Team.
We didn't do this one yesterday, so we wanted to bring it in to focus.
Taquida: God, we come to You this morning.
We come to You always in thanks.
Dan: Leading the day with prayer, Team Red, Geselle and Taquida, are driving from Slidell, Louisiana to Avondale, Louisiana.
Their allotted time today is 1 hour and 14 minutes.
Taquida: Please give us strength to go throughout the day and the rest of this journey.

- We heard that it was Callie's birthday today, and we wanted to send her some love.

I'm so glad that we met these people.
Pat: I know.
- Just wonderful, wonderful people.
♪ Dan: All four teams are back on the road racing to new cities and new family.
Callie on Team Black begins to reflect on the beauty and hardships of being adopted.
Callie: Your journey is exactly how I've always wanted it to play out for you, for anyone.
When the mass population thinks about adoption, they think about how excited people are to receive a baby, to adopt a child into their family, and it's this joyous moment.
People don't necessarily always understand that people don't want to be found.
People don't want to know these children that they gave up, and that's a big portion of, of adopted kids out there.
It's a time in people's lives that they don't necessarily always want to remember.
So, when you have someone step forward and say, we've been waiting for you, thank you for finding us, it's the best feeling in the world.
It, it's, it's, it's how you always want that relationship to begin, and that's what Patrick has been finding.
And, unfortunately, I represent the other side of the spectrum.
But when we say that we don't want anything, it's usually that we don't want anything material.
Pat: Exactly.
Callie: We're not looking for money.
We're not looking for things, we're not-- we're just looking to be loved and know where we come from.
It's an important story to tell, and it's important that other adoptees hear this side of the story, because it's... - It happens.
Callie: It happens.
A lot.
♪ Geselle: Whoa!

Lizzy: Welcome to Franklin.
[phone dings] Pat: Oh, we have ourselves a text.

Lizzy: "Bandstand Park."
Mitchell: All right, let's hit it.
Trinesha: Today, we have been really in sync from the drive to the challenge, and yesterday we were havin' a little bit of a problem doing that, but today I think we really, we really have each other's backs today.
- Yeah, we found our zone.
There it is, there it is, right there.
There it is.
Trinesha: I see it.
Andy: This is it.
♪ - Whew!
All right.
Lizzy: Rip it!
- "Your challenge for Day 6 is Platter Ball."
Dan: Our challenge for Day 6 is Platter Ball.
For this challenge, teammates must manipulate metal arms to maneuver a ball onto a table.
Then they must work together to roll the ball into one of the designated holes.
If the ball falls off the table, they must start over.
Teammates will take turns manipulating the ball onto the table, and once six balls have successfully been rolled into place, Platter Ball is over.
But, be warned: All of these balls are not the same.
Lizzy: Okay.
Andy: Okay.
Do it.
You take that side, I'll take this side.
Mitchell: Ah, definitely has some weight to it.
[ball clanks] Taquida: Okay.
♪ Andy: Okay.
Ah!
♪ [thump] Pat: Ooh!
Ooh!
Taquida: Okay, okay.
Geselle: We're just trying to figure out communication, what that looks like and the stabilization of the sticks.
Mitchell: Ooh, that's good.

♪ Taquida: Okay.

♪ Andy: Nice.

Patrick: Go!
Taquida: Once it hits the table, widen yours.

[thump] - Come towards me.

Lizzy: A little towards you.
[ding] Andy: Nice!
'Kay, my turn to get the ball.
Geselle: Put this one right, right here.
Taquida: Okay.

Mitchell: Perfect.
Trinesha: Where you goin'?
Mitchell: To your left.
Trinesha: Right there?
Mitchell: Perfect.
Trinesha: Got it.
[ding] Michell: Perfect.

♪ [ding] Pat: There we go, go!
Callie: After we land three balls, then we have to switch sides, so I head over to the zigzag side.
Andy: This one's lighter, so be aware.
We decided to grab the white ball and see what it was, and I think it must have had a weird weight in it because it just did not want to roll down the arm.
Lizzy: Oh wow!
[ding] Andy: Nice, okay.
Because we got it so quickly, it was pure brilliance and strategy on our parts, and just great teamwork.
Taquida: Open, open.
Right there.
Okay.
Pat: Whoa!
Hold on.
Callie: Move it slightly.
Pat: Almost there.
Callie: Got it!
Pat: Go!
Callie: Okay!
Then we get to our final ball, and it's my turn, and it's the white ball.
Pat: I think this one's gonna be a lot lighter.
Callie: Yep, way lighter.
Tip it your way.
[slam] Pat: Okay.
Callie: I can't figure out what's going on with this ball.
Trinesha: It's lighter.
[thump] Oh!
Mitchell: 'Kay, grab it.
Geselle: Mm!
Pat: Drop it, start over.
[slam] Mitchell: Perfect.
Perfect.
Ah!
Trinesha: Ugh!
- 'Kay, we got this last one.
This is all we gotta do.
Slowly.
Tilt it to your left.
Lizzy: I'm trying.
It's not-- Andy: I know.
Just, just stop.
♪ Mitchell: Perfect.
[ding] Let's go!
Go ahead, Tiny, go.
Taquida: Woo.

Don't stop, go get the ball, next ball!
Lizzy: Because that last hole is on the edge of the table, it keeps rolling off over and over.
Callie: Okay, Pat, calm down.
Calm down!
[smack] Mitchell: Spread.

Andy: You got it, Liz.
[ding-ding-ding] Mitchell: Let's go!

Trinesha: [sighs] Mitchell: Ahh!

I'm talkin' 'bout able to blew off the top of my head.
'cause I was so excited.
Trinesha: Me too!
Andy: We got this, we got this.

[ding-ding-ding] Both: Yes!

♪ Mitchell: [exhales] Andy: Let's see where we're goin', let's see where we're goin'.
Lizzy: Tear it open!
- I'm trying, babe!
- Go, faster.

Both: "You'll find your relative at..." Lizzy: "402 Elk Street."
- "...Bales Way, Jeffersonville, Indiana."

Andy: Let's find Elk Street.
[car doors thud] ♪ [ball thuds] Taquida: All right, open up!
[tense music] Patrick: Drop it.
[ball thuds] [loud clattering] - What's the strategy?
- We gotta level it, keep it level.
[ball rumbles] [loud thump] - Whoo, okay, here we go.
Around that one... Taquida: Can't let it go fast, and... [tense music] [muffled boom] ♪ [boom] [ding-ding-ding] Patrick: Ey!
[boom] Geselle: [loud groan] Both: [giggling] Patrick: Okay.
♪ - "You will find your relative at--" - "1537 Dublin Street--" - "--County Road C, Montello, Wisconsin."
Okay!
Patrick: let's go!
[car doors thud] [engines rumble] - 'Scuse me?
Y'all know how to get to Bales Way?
- Spring Street, take a left?

♪ - I say we get back into the downtown and just grid off.
- We were lucky enough that we saw Elk Street on the way in.
We just don't know which direction we're supposed to turn.
Liberty and Elk run parallel to each other, so take a... left?
- Okay.
Callie: Okay, so here's County C. Patrick: I don't like that these-- - Just look for some numbers.
- Yeah.
Hopefully, this is like country numbers where they jump up when we get a little bit outta town.
This address is on a country road and it looks like it could be far away, so we're really hoping that we took the right way outta town to get there.
If we are going the wrong way, we are in trouble.
- We could be toast.
Tacquida: How're you doin', sir?
Do you know where Dublin Street is?
When we pulled outta the parking lot, we had no idea where we were goin'.
♪ Dan: As the teams navigate to their relatives' homes, the tension begins to rise.
Mitchell: No, he said veer right!
Trinesha: It's a highway!
Mitchell: No, it's not.
- Yes, it is!
- Tiny, he said you can't go too-- that was it, that was it back there!
- Okay, that's the highway, though.
Mitchell: No, it's not.
He said if you go too far, you hit the highway, Tiny.
Now, you gotta take another right.
You gotta go back!
- We think we missed our turn, but neither of us are sure where to go.
Lizzy: I think Elk is the next one after Liberty, but it looks like it's a one-way, so we're gonna have to go on it-- - Yeah, see if it goes the right way.
- And see if we're goin' the right direction.
Taquida: Hi, sir, do you know where Dublin Street is?
We still don't know where we're going, so we saw a delivery guy and we stopped him.

And, fortunately, he knew where we needed to be, and it was right up the road.

Mitchell: Park right here.
Trinesha: From here?
- Yes, park!
- Okay.
[seatbelt fumbling] Mitchell: We stopped one last time in the hopes that somebody knows where to go.

Lizzy: We're lookin' for 402, so it should be coming up here, 430... Callie: Look, look, look, look, look, look, look!

Patrick: There we go.

Andy: 404!

♪ Lizzy: Right on, baby!

Andy: Hi!
I'm Andy, and this is my wife, Lizzy.

I'm your cousin on your dad's side.

Lyle: Yeah, it's really, really, nice to meet you, I just can't-- I, I just-- it's overwhelming.
I know you met Guy-- Andy: Yes!
Lyle: Guy is my uncle.
Lizzy: Okay.
Lyle: Guy, Guy and my mother were brother and sister.
Both: Okay.
Lyle: There were 14 of them in the family, I'm sure you heard that story.
And I am one of... 52 grandchildren of my, my grandmother had.
- Yes, we heard 52.
- I'm, I'm obviously the best one.

- The one thing I have learned over the time of meeting both the McDonalds and the Showalters is that everyone is, uh, completely close to one another and bonded in ways that, uh, no position on the family tree can change.

♪ When we pulled up and I saw her from afar, I notice the skin tone, but as I got closer to her and I realized-- I recognized the nose and the smile, I started to get a-- - Yeah.
- A little antsy.

Mitchell: Hi!
Woman 1: How are you?
- My name's Mitchell.
This is my wife, Trinesha.
- And my name is Bernie.
Mitchell: Bernie, nice to meet you.
And who are you related to?
- I am related to you, Mitchell.
- Oh, really?
Ho-how are we related?
- We are cousins.
Mitchell: Cousins!
Bernie: Hey, can-- do I-- Bernie: Nice to meet you!
- It's so good to meet you!
Bernie: So nice to meet you.
Mitchell: Oh, wow!

Mitchell: I see the, the small resemblances.
Bernie: [laughs] I could see his mom's face immediately, in his smile, in, just, his features.
He looked just like his mom.
- The eyes, it's pre-- even the nose.
Even a little bit the nose.

Mitchell: Yes, yes!
Pulling up today, I assumed it was gonna be more of Trinesha's family 'cause... every other day, you know, we rollin' up and we be like, who are you related to?
- [chuckling] Mitchell: It was wearin' on me a little bit.
Um, I was startin' to get a little worried, I was like, did they find anybody for me?
But today...
I rolled up and I got to meet my cousin.
Oh, so nice to meet you!
Bernie: So nice to meet you too!
I'm so happy.
- Yes, yeah, we've been going for some days now, and you're the second one so far.
Bernie: Well, good, I'm glad, I'm glad that we got to meet!
- Oh, my goodness, I got... so many questions.
- Sounds great, sounds great.
- Yes, ma'am.
- I am so thrilled.
I'm here because of him.
I'm on this journey for him, with him, every day he gets to meet someone, I am over the moon.

[doors click open] As we're pulling up to the house, I'm really wondering who I'm getting ready to meet, 'cause that's a lotta unsettled emotions of anticipation, and I'm really hoping for some good news after the last couple o' days.

Callie: We see two women walk out and we see this beautiful blonde and-- but we saw a beautiful blonde yesterday and it was Patrick's sister so we're not really sure what to expect.
- Wait, is that-- - I thought it was your sister.
- I did too!
[gentle music] Woman 2: Are you ready?
- I am ready.
[car doors thud] Hi!
- Hello!
Callie and Patrick: Hello!
- I'm, I'm Carolyn.
- I'm Patrick.
- I'm Callie.
- We're your cousins.
- You're my cousins?!
Woman 2: We're your cousins!
Callie: You're my cousins?!
Carolyn: Yes!
- Oh!
[sobbing] Callie: [emotionally] Oh my-- thank you so much for coming!
[crying] Carolyn: Oh, it's gonna be okay.
- Oh, my gosh, I can't believe you guys came!
[crying continues] Callie: They were so happy to see me and, and to meet me and they instantly embraced me and, and-- - Oh, definitely.
Carolyn: Oh, now, Caitlyn needs a hug.
- Oh, hi, oh my gosh!
You're beautiful!
Caitlyn: You're beautiful!
- I'm related to Callie 'cause her mother is my first cousin.
Her reaction was just overwhelming.
I was crying, she was crying, we were all crying.
- I think it's a very unique feeling that it's like a once-in-a-lifetime experience when you get to meet somebody that you didn't know even existed and then you get to hug them in your arms and know that they're your blood relative.
It's incredible.
Carolyn: It just reinforced why we're here.
We've been waiting, like, just to meet you.
- Oh, I can't-- I'm so sorry!
Patrick: I want a hug too, thank you for coming!
♪ - Oh, thank you for bringing her on this trip.
Callie: She said, as soon as we found out that you existed... we couldn't wait to meet you.
♪ And it's all I really wanted, you know?
I just wanted someone to be happy to see me.
Because, up until that moment... from what I had been told, no one... no one was happy to hear about me.
To have someone look at, look at you and say, we've been waiting for you, it's just, uff.
Caitlyn: So, I actually live in Hawai'i right now, so I wanted to bring you a lei to say welcome to the family.
- Oh my gosh, thank you so much, wow!
We just said yesterday, we were like, wouldn't it be cool if we had family in Hawai'i?
Patrick: Yes, exactly, you do, I know!
- Oh my gosh, I am just-- Caitlyn: I think seeing her blonde hair and-- I dunno, just so many of her features.
You can see that she's family, you can see that we have relatives in common, that we share the same blood, and something very special.
Carolyn: Well, we obviously have a lot to talk about.
- So, let's go inside and we can get to know each other.
Callie: Thank you so much!
- Come one!
Callie: Oh my gosh-- [laughs emotionally] ♪ [door clicks shut] - It was a shock, and it was a wonderful, wonderful surprise.
♪ Dan: In Franklin, Pennsylvania, Andy is hearing stories about his family from his cousin, Lyle.
- Yeah, this is a picture of my mom and dad.
Andy: Oh!
Lyle: Ray and Norma were their names and, uh, my mom... she owned a diner, my dad worked all the time, uh... Johnny spent a lotta time with us.
Andy: Okay.
Lyle: Uh, your dad, and, uh-- - Johnny Wayne.
- Right, Johnny Wayne.
We were third cousins, but more like brothers.
♪ - Oh, yeah!
- There's him at-- I-I'm, I'm gonna guess between 10 and 12.
Andy: Good lookin' kid.
Lyle: They raised him pretty much like... he was their own.
- It sounds like you guys were pretty much inseparable.
- Pretty much.
Andy: It was really exciting to sit across from Lyle because, uh... he's the first, uh, relative that I've met that has a truly direct connection to my father, that, uh, knew him as a child and grew up with him and can tell me that side of his story that I haven't heard before.
- The way we got raised is the way Johnny got raised.
[chuckling] It wasn't always easy.
Lyle and Andy: [chuckling] - Is there a reason for that or... Lyle: Well... Johnny's dad, he was a pretty heavy drinker.
Um, they did a lot, uh, and she-- they were always gone.
Doin' this, doin' that, kinda left the kids, fend for themselves.
And, uh, my mom and dad kinda picked up on that and they just kinda, kinda really kept an eye on 'em and, uh, I know he, he told me several times, if it wasn't for your parents, I don't know where I woulda ended up, so...
They were a big influence on his life, so...
I don't know if John ever said it, but I think he loved my parents to death because he got from them what he didn't get from his own parents at home and... he didn't have that at all in his life, but he had it when he was at our house and I think that's why he kept comin' back.
An-and when we got in high school, we, we-- he kinda went his way a little bit and I went my way, but... whenever anybody needed it, when one of us needed him for something, we were always there.
- Brothers to the end.
Lyle: Yep, pretty much.
Pretty much.
Andy: I just wanna tell you how much I appreciate you stepping in and giving me this amazing information, it's a... you're the first person that I've really got a chance to talk to that knew Johnny and... thought of him as a brother in a lotta ways, so... the amount of information you have as far as letting me know who he was-- Lyle: Yeah.
- And who he still is.
Lyle: Oh, yeah!
I'm just glad that, that I had the opportunity to do this for ya.
- Thank you.
Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
- You're very, very welcome.
Andy: It was amazing that Lyle shared those stories with me about my dad and... their childhood with each other and, uh...
I'm just hoping that... if not here on the show, at some point, I get the chance to meet him.
♪ ♪ Callie: How do you fit into the whole equation?
- Well, I'm your cousin through your mom.
Your grandmother-- Callie: Okay.
- Would be my mom's sister.
- Okay.
I've heard that I'm a lot like my Aunt Lisa.
- Yes.
Callie: And-- [laughing] - Lisa was my cousin.
Yeah, her-- Lisa and I were buds.
We were so tight growing up and we still keep in touch and, and talk and get together but-- And Doug-- and my brother might remember more about her family, or I could just text her.
- Oh, Doug is your brother!
- Yes, Doug's my brother!
- Oh!
I had not put that together, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I got it, okay, I'm here, I'm present.
[laughing] Carolyn: No, Doug's my brother, yes.
- Oh, wow!
Oh, my gosh.
Sorry, I'm putting-- oh, please.
The only other biological relative I met was my Cousin Doug on Day 4, so to meet his sister now is amazing.
- Well, it's a lot to put together, it's all new people coming into your life, of course it's gonna take a little bit to... - I've had to take notes.
- Yeah, and there's a lot.
- There's a lot.
- Well, I did bring some photos.
I have a lot more, but I just picked out a few that-- Callie: Okay.
- I wanna show you.
This one... there's my mother.
Callie: Okay.
Carolyn: And that would be your grandmother.
Callie: Yeah, yep.
Carolyn: You know what she looks like.
Callie: Yep, absolutely.
Carolyn is showing me photos of her immediate family, and for the first time, I get to see what my grandma and cousins look like.
Carolyn: And she was my favorite growing up, of course, she was, oh, such a character.
So, that's that one.
Callie: It's amazing to see... all these beautiful people that I get to call family, and I can't wait to meet them.
♪ I, I thought after Doug, that my journey was over, and, um, I did, [emotionally] I woke up really sad this morning.
- Oh... - I truly can't begin to tell you guys... what it means to me that you guys showed up.
It's not about who shows up but that someone showed up, you know?
So, I wanna thank you guys, truly.
- No, thank you for looking for us.
- Thank you for-- - I just-- it-- [sniffs] Carolyn: No, thank you for finding us.
Callie: Mm.
♪ I woke up this morning sad because I thought I was done.
You know, it was my birthday and I thought maybe, but who would it be, you know?
And...
I, I guess I just never expected... that anyone else would-- was coming.
Oh, what's going on?
- All right.
I've got a few more people for you to meet.
- [gasps] - Surprise!
[whooping and cheering] Callie: Oh my gosh!
You guys have got to stop doing this to me!
- This is my sister, Dove, she's your cousin.
- Oh!
[laughing] Callie: Oh, I-- [sputters] - Okay, and this is my husband, Jeff.
- Hello.
Nice to meet you.
Callie: You too.
Patrick asked me outside, you know, what my most memorable birthday has been, and I said this one.
Is there somebody else here?!
Caitlyn: I dunno, is there somebody else here?
- Yay!
[laughing] How do you top... meeting family that you've wanted to find for 40 years?
When you really think about it, 40 years ago today, I came into this world.
[emotionally] And all these people made a point... to be present to celebrate the day that I was born.
40 years later.
That's the best birthday gift that you could ever possibly get.
It's something that I will never, ever forget.
Patrick: Here we go!
- Now, that's a good lookin' crew!
Yeah, look at that!
[click] [cheering] ♪ Dan: Back in Jeffersonville, Indiana, Mitchell is sitting down with his cousin, Bernadine.
Mitchell: So, exactly how are we related?
- Your mom and I are first cousins.
- Ah, first cousins!
Bernie: First cousins, yes, yes.
Your grandfather and my dad were brothers.
- Okay.
Is my grandfather still living?
- He has passed.
Mitchell: He has passed, okay.
Bernie: Yeah, your grandfather passed.
- M'kay.
It's unfortunate I didn't get to meet my grandfather, but I am happy that I at least got to see a picture of him and kind of hear about what kind of man he was.
- When I look at you, I see your mom so much.
Like, I can see your mom from here up, I could just... Mitchel: Mm.
So you know her?
- Yeah, I met her when I was young.
- Mm!
Bernie: Her and I were young in Michigan.
Mitchell: Are you still in contact with her to this day?
- I just see her on Facebook, so I know who she is and-- - Okay.
- But, you know, it's been a long time, yeah.
- I remember she had long, black hair.
Slightly curly, I wanna say, almost wavy like yours.
I remember that, I remember that she wasn't tall.
She was about your skin tone.
I just could not remember her face.
But for years, I kept a hold of her name.
It was Nina Marie Solis, but I just realized I've been saying it wrong and it's "sol-EESE".
- Solis, mm-hm.
Did you know that your mom was, um, 50% Mexican?
- I did not.
Bernie: You didn't.
- No, not-- I did not know that.
Bernie: She is, yeah.
Her dad was full Mexican.
And would you like to see a picture of her?
I have a couple of pictures of her.
- Ye-yes.
Bernie: You would?
- Yeah, I would.
Bernie: M'kay.
♪ Here is one of her.
- [sniffles] [muffled chuckle] Bernie: You definitely look like your mom.
Mitchell: Wow!
♪ - You resemble her, like I said, right when I saw you, I saw your mom's face.
Trinesha: So much.
- Her smile, her eyes-- - So much!
- Her nose, yeah.
- Yeah, oh, yeah, the nose, definitely-- - Down to the tee.
- Sets it off every time.
Bernie: Mm-hm.
- Wow.
- I haven't seen her face since I was eight years old.
- That picture said a thousand words.
Mitchell: Yes, it's so much more than I've ever had.
I never had a real, full picture of what she looked like, facial wise, and once Bernie brought that picture up, it took all that fog outta everything that I had, and it just became one concise picture and, just lookin' at her, I was overjoyed.
I-- uh-- just to be able to see a picture of her and know for a fact what she looks like.
It means the world to me.
♪ I mean, when I look at these pictures, it just makes me, like... even more appreciative of you coming 'cause...
I haven't seen her, you know, since I was eight and I always assumed what she looked like.
- She's beautiful, just like you.
Mitchell: [chuckles] - I can see it.
- [softly] She is beautiful.
Thank you.
Bernie: I'm just so happy that I was able to give you this and know that you're part of our family.
♪ Bernie: [indistinct] ♪ Geselle: Could you tell me more about, like, the relationship between you and my mom?
- Well, with your mother, her name's Evelyn, she's my best friend... and we grew up together.
And we just had fun as kids.
- Okay.
Amenta: My friendship with Evelyn was basically from... a baby.
Her mom and my mom are sisters, so they loved each other and they taught us to love each other.
- Do you have any pictures of my mom?
- I do.
Okay, this is Evelyn.
- [chuckles quietly] Me.
[chuckles] I see me.
Wow.
♪ The lips, the eyes... the ears.
Seein' my mom for the first time...
I was floored at how much she looked like me.
It was just amazing to finally see a picture of her.
This is crazy.
- Yeah, a clone o' you.
Geselle: As Amenta and I are sitting on the sofa talking... she's saying all these stories about my mom... but she keeps referring to her in a past tense.
[wry chuckle] So it leads me to believe, like, she's, she's not here anymore.
You said "was".
Does that mean that my mother's passed?
- Yes.
[somber piano music] - How, how did she pass?
- She had, like, an aneurysm in her brain that burst.
♪ Geselle: I really wanted to meet my mom.
I really did.
♪ Amenta: Yes, but she tried to find you, but we didn't have any success due to... adoption records were closed.
If there was any possible for us to find you, we would've found you.
♪ Geselle: Makes sense.
- That's why I said after today, just move on with more people to love you.
Geselle: Hearing that my mother's passed... that's so many emotions going on right now.
I've searched for her for 46 years.
And to get to this place, I won't be able to hug her, I won't be able to hear her voice.
I won't be able to ask her questions.
It hurts.
♪ - Would you like to go visit the cemetery where your... family is?
- [quietly] Yeah.
Amenta: Mm-hm.
- I said "yes" but I wanted to say "no"... because I knew it was about to get real.
When we got to the cemetery, I, um... stepped away from everybody else.
♪ Taquida: How're ya feelin'?
- [emotionally] I wanna get back in the car.
I don't wanna be here.
- Why?
- [sniffs] I just don't wanna be here, man.
♪ Taquida: I couldn't let her shut down.
Um, and I know she depended on me for that, and I know the reason why she's doin' this.
So, in that moment, I had to kinda remind her of her why.
- You ready?
Let's take slow, baby steps.
♪ Taquida: C'mon, you got this.
It's gonna be okay.
Let it out.
- [stifled sobs] The support meant a lot, but I also wanted to be left alone.
[fighting back sobs] - You're okay.
You can't go-- you can't go back, but you gotta go forwards.
You're goin' backwards, c'mon, you got this.
You got it.
Look, look, look, look, look.
You got a deal-- - If Evelyn was here, she would be singing "Work It Out".
- Right.
♪ That problem that I had ♪ ♪ I just couldn't seem to solve ♪ ♪ I prayed and I prayed, Lord, ♪ ♪ But just got deeper involved ♪ ♪ So I gave it over to Jesus, I stopped worryin' about it ♪ ♪ I gave it over to the Lord, And He worked it out ♪ That's Evelyn.
- You got this.
Amenta: She was a singer.
And that's Evelyn.
♪ She died in 2003.
Geselle: [sniffles] Amenta: March 5th, 1958.
- [sniffs] [breathing heavily] ♪ [sniffs] ♪ Geselle: I needed a moment to block everybody out.
And in that moment, um...
I was just wishin' I could hear her heartbeat.
Or "I love you" or a hug or... see her smile.
♪ Taquida: I was feelin' a lot of emotions for Geselle, um... when she sat down to take her time 'cause she needed that time, and I respected that.
- [sniffs] ♪ Taquida: It's, it's just unfair.
To not be able to know anything until it's too late.
You know, even though... she needed it, but it's like...
I couldn't wish that on anybody.
Geselle: [sighs] [sniffs] Amenta: Thank you.
- Take a deep breath.
- ♪ Let Jesus fix it for you, He knows just what to do ♪ I was just trying to comfort her.
She lost her mother and her sister and her uncle and her grandmother, so it was a domino effect.
♪ I felt her pain.
I tried to just comfort her in any way I could, but there's no comfort when you've, you've been stabbed in the heart.
Geselle: Visiting my mom's grave was definitely hard for me.
But I'm glad that I had Amenta and Taquida there... uh, as I was processing on my road to healing.
♪ ♪ [dramatic music] Dan: It's the end of Day 6, and the sun has set on four exhausted teams, and with zero strikes, Teams Red and Blue are safe.
But with two strikes each, Teams Black and Green are in danger of being eliminated from this competition.
Callie: That was a difficult challenge.
- You know, we didn't time out, I thought that went well.
Andy: Every second is-- Lizzy: Exactly.
Andy: Like gold at this point because the other teams are just so good.
♪ ♪ Taquida: [chuckling] - Happy birthday!
- Happy birthday, Callie!
- Hi guys, it's me!
I'm 40.
Andy: Ooh!
- Happy birthday!
- So d'you get to actually do anything for your birthday other than drive?
Callie: I did, yes!

- Ooh!

Callie: I know, I wish we could've all been together.
- Yeah, that would've been cool.

- A cousin on my mother's side.

- I'm good.
Dan: Thank you for being there for Geselle, your cousin!
And more importantly, you had answers to so many questions and yet, those answers were difficult.
Geselle, tell us about that.
- On today, I learned that my mother passed.
- Oh... ♪ - [slow exhale] - Geselle, what I can tell you... and I mean this sincerely, from the bottom of my heart, that you need to know that while this race and the things that you discover are not always what we hope to hear, you have people that love you and support you.
♪ We love you, Geselle.
♪ - Callie.
For you, it was a much brighter note today.
You had your birthday.
Your 40th birthday!
Celebrated on Relative Race.
And tonight, you meet your second relative.
Who did you meet, Callie?
Callie: Today, I got to meet... two of my cousins... Carolyn and Caitlyn, and Caitlyn came in all the way from Hawai'i to meet me.
[giggles] - Aloha!
- Aloha!
[chuckles] - We're so glad that you would be there for Callie!
Caitlyn: Well, I'm so happy to be able to make it and to meet Callie.
- Yeah.
It's been amazing.
I was shocked.
I mean absolutely shocked.
This is the best birthday that I've ever had.
- That's perfect.
♪ Team Green, another good day for you, Andy?
Who was waiting for you today?
- This is my cousin from my paternal side, uh, this is Lyle.
- Hi!
Dan: Lyle, how are ya?
Lyle: Good!
I feel honored.
I hope I'm settin' a good enough example he wants to meet more of us.
[laughter] - So I guess that's the question.
Andy, are ya willin' to meet more family like your cousin Lyle?
- Definitely!
- It probably won't get any better than me.
- [laughs heartily] [clapping] - That is a confident cousin!
[laughter] And finally, Team Blue.
Mitchell, not only did you find family, but you found out a lot about your heritage!
Who did you meet and what were some of the big surprises you found out?
Mitchell: Well...
I got to meet... my cousin, Bernice!
- Hello, Bernie!
Mitchell: Well, I found out today that not only am I Puerto Rican but I am also half Mexican.
- Wow!
- I always assumed my ethnicity and for somebody to confirm it for me... it really put a lotta things in perspective.
- Aw, guys!
It was a day full of discovery and as we know, sometimes the things that we learn are not what we want to hear.
But remember, we are here for each other, and family will always be here for you.
Well... it's time to find out who finished in first... and who picks up the strike.
[dramatic music] ♪ Let's remind everybody at home how precarious this is for Teams Black and Green.
You both have two strikes each.
Team Red and Team Blue, you are unblemished on this, the sixth day of Relative Race!
That is amazing!
You guys have figured out this race and figured out the challenges.

- [sighs] Patrick: Good job!
- Nice, Team Blue!
[clapping] - And this is very, very rare that somebody finishes exactly on their allotted time.
Finishing in second place... ♪ ...Team Green.
- Oh!
[clapping] Callie: [groans] - Team Black.
You have two strikes.
Team Red, you don't have any.
One of you finished three minutes over your allotted time.
The other team finished 11 minutes over their allotted time.
[music builds] Safe for another day is Team Black.
- Oh!
[sighs] Dan: Team Red, your navigation to your relative's house didn't go as hoped or planned.
And so you have picked up your first strike on Relative Race.
But remember, you only have one.
Now, before we say goodnight, Team Blue, you finished in first place and with that comes the right to pick your Next Day Benefit.
And so you have Challenging or Fan-atic.
And so I ask you, Mitchell, Trinesha... which one are you gonna choose?
- I think we're gonna go with Challenging.
Dan: Challenging!
As a result, Teams Red, Black, and Green, the three of you will be penalized at your challenge tomorrow.
So, here's to all four of you doing your best, and most importantly, looking forward to finding another family member that is waiting to find you.
