Dan: After a long search, DeShae finally found her biological father.
- It's a moment that I didn't know would ever be possible.
Dan: Tonight, we say goodbye to Team Black.
Team Black received their final strike.
- If we get eliminated, we can check this in to continue on to meet another relative.
Dan: But their journey for family is not over.
DNA tells us who we are and where we came from.
Following their own DNA, four teams are racing... - It's on.
- Boom!
[crash] - Ugh!
Dan: ...to win $50,000.
- Let's get 'em!
Dan: And to find their family.
♪ ♪ Dan: Seven days ago, four teams set out from Virginia, searching for new family.
Today, only three teams remain, with their eye on the $50,000 cash prize and the title of Relative Race Champion.
The race may be over for Team Black, but with a relative ticket in hand, their search for family continues.
In Logan, Utah, Team Black is saying their final goodbyes to Jenn's cousin, Marjorie.
- We're so grateful we get to meet you guys.
- It was fun.
- Get to know you.
- It was fun.

We ended up with our third strike last night, and it was-- - Black Team is out.
- We're out.
[JD chuckles] JD: Because we want to make the most out of this experience, I think we're both trying to grab at what today is for us.
- Yeah.
JD: There might be a little sadness, there might be a little thoughtfulness about what we've experienced, there might be a little bit of joy about the fact that we get to go home.
- I think it's like mixed emotions.
- A lot of emotions.
♪ [phone chime] - Okay, here we go.
JD: Oh, you got it?
- Do you want to read it?
JD: No.
- It's the last read.
JD: No, go ahead.
- You're good?
[Marjorie laughing] JD: Too hard.
- Awesome.
- Nephi.
- Nephi?
- We can go to Nephi!
That would be... - If, in our last moments, we could share something with the other teams... - Why do we cry so much?
We're so dumb.
- We really hope you get everything you want out of this.

♪ - Meeting my father, Mike, yesterday was really one of the best moments of my life.
This morning, Mike and his wife, Donna, gave me an awesome gift and a really heart-felt letter.

♪ Anitra: Yesterday, we should have gotten a strike, but luckily, we had immunity.
Today, we don't have that benefit.
So, we got up early to pack before Dan's text comes in.
All right, uh... - Got that one here.
- Have you seen the, uh, this is the... okay.
Have you-- We're missing a map.
- It's the one where we're traveling.
North Virginia, right?
- Yeah.
Putting the maps away, I'm counting, and we're missing one.
Paul: We start looking, trying to find the map.
Look under the couch, look under-- in between the couches, look everywhere, and we happened to turn to look outside.
[Anitra gasps] Paul: Oh no.
Anitra: Rocky!
Rocky!
Paul: Rocky.
- Rocky!
- Hey, buddy.
- Hi, boy!
Rocky!
- ...nice.
- Rocky is my cousin Shawan's dog.
He's very sweet, very playful, but also very hungry.
- Everybody loves Rocky, but Rocky kinda got into a little something this morning, and took their map, and, uh, hey, Rocky eats things, what can I say?
The dog ate it.
[chuckles] Paul: All right.
Anitra: [exasperated] Ugh, it's hard to be mad at you, Rocky.
I really hope that's not a map we're gonna need today.
- All right.
It was never true when I was in school, but today, the dog ate my homework.
♪ Ray: So, this morning, we're saying our last goodbyes to my big brother, Lamont.
But I'm showing him my family chart; there's still two spaces.
I'm really hoping he has the last two names.
So, I got great-grandfather and great-grandmother.
- So, our great-grandfather is Albert Hooker, and our great-grandmother is Novela Isabella Morgan.
Ray: Seeing the full chart, just seven days after having an empty chart just means now I know completely who my mother's side of the family is.
It's-- That completed that empty space inside.
♪ Lamont: Isn't this amazing?
Ray: Yeah.
Nicole: Yes.
This is beyond amazing.
Nicole: This was empty.
[phone chime] Oh!
- Oh!
- Oh!
Wait a minute, I got a text.
Oh, it's from Dan.
You know what, you're the big brother.
You do the honor.
♪ - Good morning!
- Good morning, teams.
Welcome to day eight of Relative Race.
- Team Red, you will be traveling to Fayetteville, North Carolina.
- Team Blue will be traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina.
- Okay!
Anitra: Glad that map Rocky ate was Virginia, and not Charlotte.
- Yeah.
- And Team Green will be traveling to Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Today's first place winner will be able to text any other team... - ...demanding that they pull over on the road for five minutes.
- Your time starts... - ...now.
- Okay.
[Donna laughing] - All right, let's go.
- So, get us, get us to Fayetteville, brother.
I think that's one of the ways that we mapped out.
- Bye, cousins!
- Oh, see you later, girl.
Mike: Bye!
Get out of town!
- All right.
- We'll be back soon, okay?
Chris: We're going after first place today, and we only have to be safe one more day, and we're guaranteed for day ten.
[dramatic music] Paul: Charlotte, Charlotte, Charlotte, Charlotte, okay.
♪ ♪ ♪ Chris: We, uh, stop at the visitor's center, because they were going to have a super detailed map of Hot Springs.
I think that served us very well.
- But we really don't have to navigate to the family's house, because we'll have five minutes of GPS.
- Oh, that's true.
I didn't think about that, actually.
Dan: Today, Team Green, Chris and DeShae, are racing towards Hot Springs, Arkansas.
They have the longest allotted time of the day, at 3 hours and 55 minutes.
All teams are racing with paper maps and no GPS technology.
But, thanks to yesterday's first-place victory, Team Green will have five minutes of GPS navigation they can use at any moment.
[Zen music] Anitra: I must become the map.
- You are the map.
- Breathe the map.
- Fuse with the map.
- Connect with the map.
- Ingest the map.
- Ooh, yes, ingest the map.
Dan: Fully embedded in their road map, Team Blue makes their way to Charlotte, North Carolina.
They have the shortest allotted time of the day, at 1 hour and 43 minutes.
Like the other two teams, that includes the city selfie, a common challenge, and navigating to their new relative.
[rap music] Ray: Day eight, it's time to handle a little bit of business.
So focused, so focused.
I got the huge burden off me, the biggest monkey off my back, and now, we're ready to compete, 'cause it's always good luck to everybody, but it's more luck to us.
Dan: Team Red is headed towards Fayetteville, North Carolina.
They have an allotted time of two hours and two minutes.
The team that goes over their allotted time the most receives a strike, and three strikes means you're out of this race.
- Let's go do this, Team Red.
Day eight.
Let's see what the Lord has for us.
We out.
♪ Jenn: Let's send something to all of our people.
Something witty and cute.
As we get on the road this morning, we decided we wanted to send one last text to the other teams.
Paul: Heyyo!
Anitra: Oh!
We got a text from Team Black.
Chris: Hey, we got a text.
- New text message.
From...
Team Black.
- What does it say, what does it say?
- It says... - Aww, I'm gonna miss them.
- Yeah.
- They're adorable.
- They are so sweet.
- I love them.
- They're the best.
Paul: We love JD and Jenn.
We are sure gonna miss them.
- We'll definitely stay in touch with them after this race.
Nicole: I know this is a competition, but to actually see Team Black go home?
I just wish we could all make it to the end.
- It's gonna be weird not having them on the Skype call tonight.
DeShae: Yes.
Mm.
Still repping, though.
Still repping Team Black.
Forever and ever.
♪ All right, texting Team Blue.
Chris: All right.
- I'm gonna ask them how the tour of their home state's been the last eight--seven days.
- Might as well.
They ought to be dizzy at this point.
They've been going around in circles.
- We thought we'd have a little fun today and mess with Paul and Anitra.
[phone chime] Anitra: Oh!
Text message.
Paul: Text message.
Anitra: This is from Team Green.
What are they saying?
[laughing loudly] They said... - Ha!
[Anitra laughing] - That's funny.
- That's actually pretty good.
[phone chime] DeShae: Team Blue says... And then they sent another text message that says...
Okay, we've got to do a drumroll.
[drumming with hands] Oh ho!
Oh, uh, challenge accepted.
[phone chime] Anitra: What do they have to say?
[laughing] Both: Ohhh!
Paul: Nice.
Nice.
- We might need to turn the AC on in here now.
- Gettin' hot in here!
It's all in good fun.
But we'll still beat 'em.
- We'll still beat 'em.
[laughing] Narrator: As Team Blue and Green keep the fun alive in their cars, city destinations quickly approach and the hunt for a city sign is on.
- Charlotte City limit.
- Hey, right there!
Bobcat and Fayetteville.
- Hot Springs, Hot Springs, Law and Doctor of Hot Springs.
Pull in the next parking lot.
- Good job.
- Thank you.
- Now you told me yesterday, stay with me in this game.
Let's go.
[screams] - Okay, that's good.
Hold it right there.
[camera shutters] ♪ - Let's go!
Dan: All teams are now en route to the common challenge of the day.
- How are you feelin'?
Feelin' all right?
- Feeling pleasantly plump.
- Okay.
- With only three teams left in the race, the challenges become even more important.
Every second is gonna count.
DeShae: Oh man, this weather.
I'm a little nervous 'cause it's a park and it's storming.
Ray: Cross Creek.
Nicole: That's what it is, Cross Creek.
- That's also right in the heart of the residential area.
We've been scrapin' by with two strikes these last few days, so we need to step it up in this challenge so we can make it at least one more day.
[intense music] [screams] Both: We Think in Sync.
Narrator: Day Eight's challenge is We Think in Sync.
Facing each other, teams listen to a phrase with one key word missing.
They each write down what they think the missing word is and reveal it to each other hoping they match.
Ten matches completes this challenge.
The allotted time for We Think in Sync is five minutes.
Anitra: All right.
Paul: Let's get it.
Dan: A shot in the blank.
Both: Dark.
Both: Dark.
Both: Dark.
[cheering] - Good job, babe.
Dan: Happy as a blank.
- I try to start thinking like DeShae.
- Man.
- Lurch.
[buzzer] Both: Lark!
- Good job!
Both: Hippo.
- We're pretty in sync.
Dan: A blank is my spirit animal.
Both: Dog.
- Wolf.

[buzzer] Both: Unicorn!
[laughing] - Chris said unicorn!
I am so proud that he is thinking like me.

Dan: New blank on the block.
Both: Kid.
[ding] Both: Kid.
[ding] - Duh.
- I'm trying to think like Chris at this point and he's trying to think like me.
I actually wrote kid, and then was like, "No he's probably gonna say kids," so I added that "s" at the last second and when we revealed-- - Kid!
[buzzer] - I put kids.
He said "kid" and I had added that "s." Dan: Bring home the blank.
Both: Bacon.
[ding] Both: Bacon!

[ding] Dan: Battin' down the blank.

[buzzer] - Ball.

- We really started to get into the rhythm.

- Honey.
[buzzer] - We're down to our last match, you're just hopin' that your partner is thinkin' like you.

[dinging] Dan: Now is the winter of our blank.

[ding] [cheering] - Let's go get it!

I'm not discontent with that answer, because we are finished.

Chris: Your relative lives at 306 Lacey Street.
Come on, let's go.
- Let's do it!
[funky music] Dan: With today's challenge finally complete, all of our teams are now on the hunt to find their relative.
- So glad it stopped raining!
Chris: After reading the relative card, we realized that hey, we've got five minutes of GPS time.
[squealing] - Smartphone!
Hey Siri!
Find us directions to our relative's house!
Okay.
- 306 Lacey Street.
Give me the overview and I'll write it down.
- Five hundred feet, turn left on Lacey Street.
- Once we pulled up our relative's address, we immediately started writing it down, turn by turn directions.
We have some time, so let's go back and double check it, okay?
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Ready?
After we got done writin' it down, I went back and made sure that I had every distance, every turn, every everything written down.
Five hundred feet, left on Lacey, 306 Lacey Street.
- That's it.
Let's go.
- This is gonna be a breeze!
Nicole: Wave Tree?
No.
Ray: No, it's-- No, no, no.
It's right off Ashton.
- For once, we can see our relative's street name on the map!
All we have to do is plan the route.
Then we make a right on Ashton, a left on Ramble Wood.
- All right.
Let's make it happen.
- Okay, so cross here, make a right on Third.
Today has gone really smoothly and if we can navigate efficiently to our relative's house, we either win or place which means we're in for Day Ten.
The thing is not getting lost trying to get back to the highway.
- Yeah.
- We still have a few minutes of GPS, so we figured we'd have it lead us until time ran out.
- Usually this is the time that I'm readin' my map and trying to figure out where I'm goin' and exactly turn-by-turn directions, but I don't need that right now, because I have a GPS.
It's amazing.
- Why didn't that say "turn"?
Literally, I don't know which way to turn, so do somethin'.
Turn left on-- Phone: Turn left onto Carpenter Dam Road.
- Yeah.
Turn left.
- Are you--No.
This is not turn left.
- Oh, what?
Literally couldn't get out of the parking lot.
With a GPS in our hands.
Maps?
No problem.
GPS threw me off.
[beeping] Voice: Your five minutes of GPS time is over.
- Bye bye, GPS.
You confused me anyway.
- The problem is GPS's are great, but you still have to be smarter than it.
- Which apparantly we are not.
Dan: In Utah, Team Black, JD and Jenn, are out of the competition but using their Golden Ticket to meet one last relative.
- How do you feel?
- I feel at peace.
- Good.
- I feel like we did everything we could perfectly and I feel like we met some of the coolest people and happened to be related to them.
Today was like you were going on a visit just to a family member's house.
[soft guitar] [gasping] - I'm Linda.
- I'm JD, this is Jenn.
- I'm Steve's sister.
- Oh.
[sobbing] I'm Linda Steele and this is my son, Rod.
I am JD's aunt.
Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome.
Oh, this is exciting.
Oh.
- You look just like him.
Really good to meet ya.

- Well we want to welcome you into our home.
Jenn: Thank you.
- Being cut last night, I feared that I wouldn't have the opportunity to meet Linda and it was an answer to prayer and it was a terrific gift.
Linda: I found out that my brother had had a son that we were not aware of.
And I felt like, what a blessing in my life.
I've lost all of my family and now I've got somebody in my life that's a part of my family.
And I was so overwhelmed with joy.
- Every door's been a mystery and when it opens you don't know what you're getting.
And then instantly you fall in and you feel grateful for every moment.
- That's great.
- So, Aunt Linda.
- Yes.
Rod: Aunt Linda.
- Isn't that wonderful?
That's, that's really a tribute.

Had no idea.
And I'm so grateful to have him part of my life.
- In those first few moments of meeting Linda, I realized how much love existed in this part of my family.
And to have in just those first few minutes feel that much love from anyone in my life is special, but to know that from this day forward I'm gonna get to feel that forever.

Narrator: The Race continues for our other teams as they frantically search for their relative's address.

It is seriously so nice to be able to navigate with exact directions.
In about a mile, right on Albert Pike Road.
Our relative's home is pretty far out there.
I'm not sure we would have ever found it without a GPS.
Five hundred feet, left on Lacey.
So you'll want to get all the way over to the left.
Anitra: We should see it fairly quickly.
- This is Leudman, so we turned the wrong way.
- Yeah, we did.
Just make a U-turn.
I know we're super close to our relative's house.
We're on the right street, we're just not seein' the sign.
- Some point we must have turned the wrong way.
Just made us waste twenty seconds.
- Well this is Asht-- This is Ramble Wood!
- Ramble Wood.
- Ramble Wood.
DeShae: I don't see numbers.
Chris: 305.
- 302.
- What was it?
Both: 306.
- Right here.
- There it is.
Nicole: Forty six-- - Keep goin', keep goin' 'till you get a street.

- 04, yeah.

We home, baby.
Paul: Oh, so we gotta find 3102.
- Let's go this way.
- Is that 3102 right there?
- Uh, I'm looking.

Ray: Hello.

- Hi, I am Ray, this is my wife, Nicole.

- Well Ray, I am Nicole's cousin.

[sighs] This is awesome, I've never been able to meet any of my cousins on my dad's side, and I've always wanted to know more.
I'm just so excited to be able to spend the rest of the night with them.
♪ Paul: We're pullin' up to the house and someone's comin' out to meet us and just by lookin' at him, I could tell who he's related to.

I'm Anitra's uncle on her mother's side.
I see my sister.
♪ Seein' my niece Anitra for the first time, looking into her eyes, watching her smile, I saw my sister.
I felt my sister.
And when I held her it was like "Welcome home."
- Honestly, I can't imagine how hard it must be to lose a sibling and then be reminded visually and personality traits and things like that of that sibling who passed away.
So I'm sure that was really, really hard.
[sharp inhale] - Do y'all wanna come in?
- Sure.
[heavy breathing] ♪ ♪ - Hi!

- I'm DeShae.
- I'm Debbie.

- How are we related?
- I'm your mother.

♪ My name is Debora Fournier, and I'm DeShae's mother.
- So good to be here.
This is my husband, Chris.
- It's so nice to meet you.
- I know.
DeShae: For my entire life, I've only been able to see the name Debora on a hospital bracelet and now I'm able to see her face to face.
It's been a long time, huh?
Debbie: It's been a while, yes.
- Yeah.
Well, I can't wait to sit down and talk to you and catch up on everything.
- Yeah, I want to hear it all.
It was like we recognized each other.
[laughs] Which is impossible because I haven't seen her since she was five days old.
But I missed her so much in the years behind me.
But we can start fresh from here.
So that's an amazing thing.
Today's my birthday.
[gasps] - Happy birthday!
Chris: That's awesome.
- Oh, how cool!
This is a pretty cool birthday present, huh?
- Yes, it is the best birthday present ever.
- Yeah!

- I met my mother.
That's crazy.
♪ ♪ I just first wanted to thank you.
I had an amazing life.
And uh, things changed when I became a mom, for me.
- And you have?
- We have one son, his name is Houston.
- Houston.
- Mm-hmm.
He's just made three.
And when I became a mom, I realized what a big decision you had to make and I thank you for that decision because I had an awesome life.
You gave me a chance and an awesome life.
That's okay, we all have our-- we all have a past but-- - Couldn't, I could not drag you through that.
I could not do that.
It was all about you and at that point, it was just too much.
It was too much and I did not want-- I didn't want to put you through that.
I wanted to give you a better life, I wanted you to have a better life.
- And I did.
- When DeShae was born, I was a mess.
And I knew one thing, and one thing only: that I loved this baby so much that I could not even think about raising her in that mess.
And it was the hardest thing I've ever done.
But I-- I had to.
I just had to.
No matter how much it hurt me to make that decision, I knew it, in the end it was all best for her.
It was so hard and the nurses at the hospital kept looking at me 'cause they didn't know.
I did a private adoption with you.
And they didn't know anything, so they were wondering why I kept cryin' all the time.
[laughing] So all the while I was at the hospital I just cried.
Cried, cried, everytime they walked in the room I was cryin', I was cryin', I was cryin'.
I used a box of tissues a day.
But I knew it was the best, it was the best decision.
It might have broke my heart, but it was the best one for you.
I have been so hoping that she didn't resent me for it and quite frankly I knew I did the right thing by her.
I knew it.
So I didn't feel guilty.
Because I knew in my heart that she was havin' an amazing life.
I knew it.

♪ Anitra: My uncle Kevin brings us inside to talk and to give me something special.
- I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would have an opportunity to look at a piece of my sister and meeting you and hearing your laughter, your smile, reminds me so much of your mom.
You have given me way more than I ever gave you.
Thank you.
One thing about death, it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't forever.
And it's so different every time and you never have closure.
Losin' my sister at such an early age changed my life.
Every time I see somebody I love, before they leave I tell them, "I love you."
Because I never got a chance to tell my sister I love her.
So, she changed my life.
It's like a piece of my sister that I didn't know exist came back home.
Anitra: Speaking with my uncle really makes me overwhelmed with a lot of emotions.
All good emotions but gratitude and happiness and joy and just a lot of different things and they become overwhelming to the point where I feel like my only choice really is to sit with them and let them just be with me and work through me.
- Whatever you see in me, my sister was better.
I love family, she loved family more.
That's how your mom was.
She was faster than me.
I hate, she used to outrun me every time we raced.
[laughing] I don't care how good an athlete I was, she was better.
Cheerleader, played volleyball, softball.
It's amazin' for two people who didn't grow up around each other, didn't know each other, to be so similar.
I want to show you what we gave 'em.
- My uncle Kevin lets me open this gift he has for me and it's an old shirt that belonged to my mother.
- You know, now that I know that I had it, I know I had it for a reason now.
Eventually it was gonna be yours.
- When I held my mother's shirt, I did not want to put that shirt down at all.
It was really like I was feeling her energy.
Her presence.
I think that's one of the more cherished things that I have.
- Here you go.
Some pictures I wanna give you.
It's your mom.
[laughing] The little fat one is me in the middle.
[laughing] Anitra: It's so amazing to see these pictures of my mom and my uncles as kids and to see how happy they were.
- And this is a picture of your mom and beside her is your dad.
- Oh, wow.
She's right here?
- Yeah, and that's your father right there.
[laughing] - Today was the first time I have seen a picture of my father and a picture of my mother and father together when they were younger, so that was surprising.
I wasn't expecting to see that today.
It's nice to put a face with the name.
How cool my parents look.
My daddy havin' a blush pink suit!
They were children.
They look like they were going to a party or a dance, like they were havin' so much fun and, I mean, if you're 17 of course, it's what you do.
You have fun.
You're not thinking about raising a family.
It's because we don't even know what that means at 17.
We don't even know who we are at 17, barely.
So that really gave me a lot of perspective to why I was put up for adoption.
But also, it made them a little more, I'm gonna say human.
It just really changed, changed a lot of my perspective.
- So I brought some photos of our family to show you.
- Okay!
So my new cousins, Debrah and Callie, they brought out some family photos that I have never seen before.
- And this picture right here-- - Oh!
I see my dad!
- There's your dad right there.
- Mm-hmm.
- Look how young he looks!
- I know!
[laughing] - And these are all his brothers and sisters.
Callie: Miss Callie May.
- Your grandmother.
- Yes.
Callie: Yeah.
- Looking at a part of myself and I look like my dad, so looking at the photos is like people who you don't know, but they look just like you.
So that was just great, 'cause growin' up, I always just looked like my dad, nope, I didn't look like my mom so it was just kind of like me and my dad so now it's like, hey, you know, I've got some cousins that look just like me.
It's just a great feelin' to have a whole other side of the family opened up.
- And this is my brother.
- Mm-hmm.
- He got the Dyson nose.
- Yes, yes.
See, you can tell it too.
[laughing] Meeting Nicole for me today is very emotional because it brings back a lot of memories for me for-- in my childhood, you know?
My grandmother raising me.
Which she also raised Nicole's dad.
I just never thought I'd get a chance to meet his actual, you know, his daughter.
- I love that picture of June.
- I've got one for you too, to take with you.
I'm really thankful for meeting Nicole and her husband.
♪ Dan: In Nephi, Utah, JD is sitting down with his aunt Linda.
- I had something made that I-- - You did?
- Yeah.
Something that I think you will enjoy.
That's-- That's your dad.
Cute little one, huh?
And he loved the National Guard, he loved it so much.
JD: My aunt Linda presents me with this amazing photo album that she made.
It's a gift that I'll cherish forever.
It has these pictures of her and my biological father as they grew up throughout their entire life.
I got to see him as a little boy and as a teenager and as a man.
Jen: So much resemblance.
- Oh yeah.
- That's wonderful.
Jenn: So much resemblance.
And that's JD's face.
Rod: Yeah.
JD: I just don't remember being there for that picture.
[laughing] I believed I was looking at a picture taken of me that I didn't remember having taken of me.
I felt like I was looking at a twin.
- If you'd like to, I can take you up to the cemetery.
Jenn: You can.
- But it's okay, we can do it another day, whatever you like.
Both: Yeah.
- Yeah, we can go.
- We should.
- We can do it.
- I think it would be good for you.
JD: Throughout the journey, I've been able to learn a lot about my biological father, Steven.
And now it's that moment where we're gonna go to the graveside and I'm gonna meet him.
I have learned a lot about my aunt Linda in a very short period of time.
And she is the closest thing that I will have to my biological father.
While many people say that they got closure, for me, this is the first step into a new part of my life where I get to include this part of my family in the rest of my journey.
♪ ♪ - I got to share a moment with JD that was special.
It's a hard time, but a good time too.
JD is real happy now to know where his father lies, where he's resting.
And his grandparents.
JD: To get a name a week ago and then to pay tribute-- It's a lot.
- A lot.
Yup, it really is.
JD: Today helped me to see my dad in a different light.
I came to realize that he was a beloved son and a beloved brother, and a really good man.
♪ ♪ [upbeat music] Narrator: As Day Eight draws to a close, Anitra's uncle Kevin has one more surprise for her.
- I spent 25 years in the military.
I was a paratrooper.
Anitra and Paul, the reason we are here, you have great uncle that was a paratrooper.
- Oh, really?
- Yes, he was part of the first all black infantry unit.
The Triple Nickel.
Anitra: It's really cool to know that I come from a long line of people who are paratroopers who have fought for this country, who have served this country, and I was able to participate in it today!
♪ I felt great in there, really.
I wasn't afraid anymore.
It felt like a big fan.
It was a lot of fun.
♪ Kevin: I did over 100 jumps or whatever, but nothing gave me joy like watching my niece fly.
♪ Narrator: It's the end of Day Eight, and today's final results are being calculated.
Only three teams remain in the race, but that could whittle down to two with elimination on the line for Team Red.
[click] Dan: Tonight's video conference call is a little bit different for Day Eight.
For the first time, there are only three teams.
And it's actually a little bit sad not having Team Black.
Did you guys feel that at all today?
- We definitely did, we felt for 'em.
They're like the patriarch and matriarch of the whole Relative Race so we definitely felt for them and we missed them, and we miss them right now not being with us.
Dan: I think we all feel that and yet it is a race.
Let's talk about how Day Eight went.
Paul and Anitra, first thing this morning, one of your maps was missing.
And it may have been a very important map.
What happened?
- So, Anitra's cousin Shewan's dog, Rocky, got a hold to one of our maps and he was outside havin' a good time with it.
Anitra: Sweetest dog, hungriest dog.
Paul: We were lookin' around for it then the next thing we knew, he was outside, he had it, he was just going to town with it.
We were like, "No, Rocky!"
- Well I'm curious how you all figured out We Think in Sync, because apparantly some of you don't.
Anitra, a fly in the cheese?
[laughing] Nicole, how well did you and Raymond do in this challenge?
Do you think in sync?
- Well you know, Raymond and I are always in sync except for when we're not.
Some-- For a good chunk, it was like a big chunk, we were very in sync.
And then you know, the group kinda broke up but then we got back on track and we were in sync again.
Dan: Most importantly, it's always about who you meet every night.
And for the first time, Nicole, this wasn't Raymond's family.
This was yours.
And I think it's fair to say that you were stunned at how much you learned.
- That's fair.
That's a very fair assessment.
I'm still shocked actually.
So it's so crazy, it's actually my beautiful cousin Debrah-- - Hi!
- And her beautiful daughter which is my second cousin, Callie!
- Hi!
- Hey!
That is awesome!
That is awesome!
Team Blue, Paul and Anitra, this journey has mostly been about Anitra.
Did that continue tonight?
- It did, Dan!
I got a chance to meet my uncle Kevin and his beautiful wife Kali.
Dan: This is your uncle on your mother's side of the family who you found out early on has passed away.
Has he been able to share any stories about your mom?
- He has.
He has really shared a lot of stories that show how similar I am with my mom.
So it's been really aweseome.
Dan: DeShae and Chris, we talk about supporting someone who is searching for the answers to the questions that only someone like DeShae or Anitra or Raymond would have.
And that is, "Where do I come from?
"Who am I biologically connected to?
Why do I look this way, why do I act this way?"
DeShae, did you find someone that gave you some of those answers tonight?
- Dan, it's been a crazy week, I've met uncles and cousins and my father and grandmother yesterday, and came into today with a lot of questions.
And today I got answers because I would like to introduce y'all to my mother.
[clapping] And today is her birthday, so if y'all could just wish her a happy birthday-- All: Happy birthday!
- I must say, best birthday ever.
Dan: That's the best thing we can hear, Debbie.
That's the best thing we can hear.
We've now found how your family tree continues to grow and now is the time to find out if one of you has been eliminated.
♪ Team Red, you have two strikes.
Team Green and Team Blue, each of you have one strike.
It's now that time.
The team that finished in first place with a very important game day benefit.
The game day benefit for tomorrow is to give one of the other teams a five minute penalty.
The team that has that choice to make, the team that picks up that game day benefit finished 17 minutes over their allotted time.
Team Green, you finished in first place.
- Oh my gosh!
What?
Chris: We just got the first place finish and that actually means we're goin' to Day Ten!
Dan: Finishing 28 minutes over their allotted time and safe for another day, Team Red.
Team Blue, you finished 31 minutes over your allotted time.
Only three minutes behind Team Red and you have earned your second strike on Relative Race.
Nicole, I can see that you're really emotional.
- This has been a rough time.
Each day that we get to go on is like it's a extra, not pressure but we feel more obligated to do better.
You know, when our kids watch this, we just want them to be proud of us, our families, our new family, our old family, we just want everybody to be proud of us and we are just so happy for the opportunity and just emotionally exhausted but we gonna keep tryin' our very best every single day and we thank you for the opporunity.
- This race is a wild ride for all of you.
The most imporant part is the relative of Relative Race.
Remember that as you think about how do you attack tomorrow.
