Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipin our Spotlight on Business Report a place where people of all ethnicities and gender identities can feel safe and empowered to do their work equal space launched a co-working office this week in Newark it's the group's second location now in the heart of brick City designed with Multicultural and lgbtq plus entrepreneurs in mind Raven Santana takes a look welcome to equal space newark's new is co-working space and startup incubator located on 550 Broad Street founder and CEO City Medina says the shared space that includes three floors is designed to be inclusive for entrepreneurs of color and lgbtq plus business people I think there's an invisibility cloak around those who are identified as queer or non-binary or fem identifying and when you enter a space you feel less then you feel like you have the value build in front of the eyes of people who may not have the same unique experiences as you and so for me what would a space What would our answer to that be and I think that's what equal space is you feel seen and every founder gets to not code switch to feel their authentic self the project which received a more than $2 million Grant from the njeda to build out the space is also part of audible's business attraction program which commits to providing opportunities to business owners less likely to have financial support equal space will help to serve as that Gathering space that sense of Community there'll be event space Not Just co-working space and share space but there'll be opportunity for people to have exhibits and events and workshops and provide support for these entrepreneurs so it's not just get them here and sign a lease and keep it moving it's really how do we continue to invest in their growth audible provides mentorship coaching matches our Executives with these Founders as well again to ensure their growth the nearly 30 different spaces that vary in size range from anything like this solo desk here for $30 a day to a midsize office for more than $22,000 a month when it comes to the opportunities here they are definitely flexible so you can start off as a day member so day spacer can rent out the space for $30 a day and then essentially they will have access to conference room credits then we have you know weekly monthly opportun unities that are more communal uh we then scale up to our suet so our Suites start off at $2,000 or suite and they're pretty large and when it comes to access to suits you also have longer working hours so even though we close um we close at 6:00 and we open at at uh 10 you can you know of course stay here as long as long as you need when it comes to our larger hqs that's when it gets bigger uh so when it comes to those pricings that is actually based on the audible attraction program that is offered venique kapor CEO of alpar rock data science company is one of the first businesses to occupy equal space kapor has about 14 people on his team and explain what attracted him to equal space we did not want to have to deal with my I have many different other responsibilities I did not want to have to make sure that there's coffee here we I didn't want to have to deal with a receptionist and all those things we wanted a turnkey solution that would allow us to focus on building a business and growing jobs here in New York there's a lack of uh people uh of color of um uh diverse backgrounds in in technology and we want to encourage that and we wanted to have an open space where they could feel comfortable this is equal space's second location the third floor completion was part of phase one Medina says the two other floors will be fully renovated during phase 2 which is projected to be done in 2025 for NJ Spotlight news I'm Raven Santana support for the business report is provided by Riverview jazz presenting the 11th annual Jersey City Jazz Festival May 29th to June 2nd event details including performance schedules and location or online at Jersey City jazz festival.com
