Escape.
Today, we're exploring historic Port Townsend.
It’s easy to know where to start your journey.
This is the Northwest Maritime Welcome Center.
Home to a little bit of everything, including people who are very eager to help.
My favorite thing about working down here is I get to welcome everybody in, and I get to help them plan their experience.
And I'm never alone because I have a whole team of volunteer.. One of the things we were focused on when we started planning for the Welcome Center was that there was no, really no way for visitors or locals to orient themselves to Port Townsend maritime identity.
And so we started working with our indigenous partners, going back 14,000 years of human history on the water in this place.
Right the way through to working with young people to get them into the marine trades to.. And my favorite part, shopping.
And that's just one corner of the Northwest Maritime Center.
Let's go check out the cool stuff over there.
This is the Chandler Education Building.
Rows and rows of classrooms to help you get the education, so you can grow up and learn to do something cool like that.
So as cool as this place looks, there are ways you can actually get involved too.
Shane, can you tell us a little bit about the program?
Sure.
Here at Northwest .. including school programs in the spring and fall.
We offer online and in-person programing for adult maritime skills.
In the summertime, we run eight weeks of summer camps for kids, which includes learning to sail, coming and just having fun on the water.
And we also run US power boating and US sailing keelboat certification courses and powerboat certification courses.
What's your favorite part of your job?
The connections that I see, the pathways that our students take.
They can come here as young as five years old, and they progress through our programs and then go on to collegiate sailing careers or other maritime careers.
If you've ever wanted to learn how to pilot a ship out there, starting here with the simulator.
Whether you're looking to explore or build yourself a boat, there's something for everyone at Northwest Maritime Center.
I'm Angela.
Thank you for exploring.
I'll see you.
