Architecture is often referred to as frozen music, and the link between them has long been recognized.

What do the buildings we make say about us?

How does our perception of them change when filtered through music?

I'm Seth Boustead, and this is Songs About Buildings and Moods.

Beginning in the middle of the 20th century, México became a powerhouse for film production, giving rise to a host of fabulously talented directors and stars, with a legacy that continues to this day.

And the primary center for all of this activity was the Studios Churibusco in Mexico City, where directors like Luis Buñel, Roberto Galvedón, Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, David Lynch, Robert Zemeckis, and many more brought the creative visions to life.

For film buffs like me, this is hallowed ground.

Director General Erwin Neumeier spoke with me about the incredible history of this special place.

Hay mucha historia aquí, por favor cuéntame más sobre la historia.

Los estudios se crearon en los 40s, cuando la guerra estaba en su apogeo y se estaba propagando.

Entonces había un americano que se llamaba Wright, señor Wright, que estaba en la metalurgia y era dueño de todo este predio y del country club y de toda la zona.

Entonces decidió hacer unos estudios a la imagen y semejanza de los de Hollywood, lo más avanzado en la tecnología, los foros que no nada más son los 8 que tenemos y había catorce foros en su momento más grande.

Y con un back lot que es importante para las películas en esa época, porque podías construir el exterior y meterte el interior según las necesidades de producción.

Era un estudio realmente importante.

Se le acaba el dinero por ahí en el '42, '43 y decide querer venderlo a la RKO.

Un canciller mexicano se mete en ese enjuague y dice que no, entonces le ofrecen el estudio al señor Ascarraga, que era el dueño de una radio difusora muy importante, y él por no querer tener broncas con el gobierno y que le puedan hacer algo de ruido en su negocio, decide entrarle.

Entonces eso se vuelve, digamos, mexicano en ese momento y mucho tiempo después se vuelve parte del estado.

El estudio ahora le pertenece al gobierno, es en su totalidad parte del sistema de cultura, de la Secretaría de Cultura del estudio.

Ha tenido muchos cambios, porque hacia los 70s se construye la primera cineteca nacional con dos foros aquí en la esquina de Churubusco y Tlalpan, que se quema esa cineteca en los 80s por negligencia de las autoridades, y se pierde un montón de material.

Igual que el CNA, el Centro Nacional de las Artes, le rebana casi 10 hectáreas al estudio de todo back lot para construir lo que es la Escuela Nacional de Arte, Música y Danza.

En fin, pero hay una convivencia ahorita rica con ellos en donde puedes no filmar una película en los jardines, porque ya no se puede.

Y eso también impidió que llegaran muchas películas americanas que necesitaran un back lot para construir, como se hizo en su momento con la de Arnold Schwarzenegger de Total Recall o Encogí a los Niños .

Ese tipo de historias ya no caben en el estudio porque solo tenemos foros.

También la producción ha ido cambiando, eso es cierto.

Ya tenemos virtual production en donde puedes hacer exteriores, hacer mucha preproducción para eso.

Pero la historia del cine, pues aquí se han hecho más de 3.000 películas desde 1945, que fue la primera producción completamente mexicana.

Y que en los cuarentas todo este cine viajaba, no nada más en México, sino hacia Latinoamérica, España.

Y creo que, muchos españoles, la primera película que vieron quizás fue de Cantinflas antes de ver a ninguno de sus artistas por allá.

Entonces sí tenía una trascendencia importante, lo que se hacía, que era una relación muy importante entre el público, lo que vivía como sociedad y lo que veía en el cine.

Siempre estaba reflejada, Pedro Infante, Jorge de Negro, María Félix o Pedro Armendariz, aunque lo hicieran María Candelaria, en Xochimilco se disfrazaban, se vestían de indígenas y se representaban a sí mismos en el público, los quería ver, que es algo que ha pasado ahora en la cinematografía de varios países, pienso en Corea, que se quieren ver ellos, ya no quieren ver nada más el cine americano, o que pasa en India, que nada más ven cine hindú, o China.

Entonces eso en México pasaba en los 40s, se veían a sí mismos, los personajes dentro de las historias, de sus historias, era un diálogo interesante entre la audiencia y les gustaba su música, su baile, su manera de expresarse.

Like so many people, violist and composer Gerardo Aponte Coupido grew up watching the films produced at Studio Churibusco and many of these classic films were a direct inspiration for his musical interpretation of this special place.

Yo, en mis composiciones, me gusta, intento contar historias.

Entonces lo que quise recrear con mi composición fue la historia de estudios Churibusco y del río en sí, que había un río aquí, el río Churibusco, que ahora es entubado y es una vialidad automotriz.

Entonces eso fue lo complicado, primero poder crear la idea, de qué iba a ser y pues fue muy interesante ya después entender cómo contar esta historia acerca del río y musicalmente lo que hice fue usar esta idea musical que tomé para el río dentro de una metáfora, hacerlo como los ladrillos que fueron construyendo estos estudios y bueno, pues así fue como dice la pieza.

Ah, sí, muy interesante.

Descríbeme por favor la pieza también, la música.

La música, bueno, dentro de esta historia que quise contar, porque la historia de estudios Churibusco es muy importante en el cine mexicano y también algunas producciones extranjeras se han hecho aquí.

Hay muchas películas que llevamos en México en el corazón, entre ellas, Nosotros los pobr o algunas otras películas.

Entonces yo en mi pieza hice una pequeña cita de algunas músicas de estas películas muy, muy breve, que se reducen a diez segundos, más o menos y mezclé todas estas pequeñas citas que son cuatro básicamente, para celebrar o contar un poco la historia de los estudios Churibusco.

Hay una mezcla de estilos en la pieza, para mí también un poco experimental al principio, y entonces más clásico y entonces romántico.

Descríbe,por favor.

Sí, la cuestión es que, dentro de mi contar historias, procuro ver hacia dónde me llevan las cosas.

Entonces al principio de la pieza, en efecto, juego un poco con los sonidos en el piano pero no en las teclas, sino en las cuerdas que fue para mí crear el sonido del río.

Y dentro de todo estos diferentes lenguajes sí tiene que ver un poco como la idea de que fuera una música muy visual por un lado, pero por otro lado sí ser una referencia de la música de cine y de la música del cine de la época de oro mexicana.

Por eso sí de pronto es un poco como dices, experimental pero de pronto se va al romanticismo como estas canciones.

O sea, las canciones que cantaba Pedro Infanto, varios que cantaban en esa época, en las películas, eran muy románticas.

Entonces, por eso fue hacer un poco esta mezcla de estilos.

Interesantes.

¿Y hubo películas exactas en las que estabas pensando?

Sí, fueron cuatro películas las que, bueno, la verdad es que originalmente tenía idea como de usar 20 músicas diferentes conforme fui escribiendo, acabé terminando de usar solo 4 fragmentos que es de la película Nosotros los pobres .

¿Qué te ha dado esa mujer?

que esas dos, la característica es que los protagonistas son de los grandes cantantes de la época de oro mexicano.

El bolero de Raquel que es una película cómica con Cantinflas, que era un gran cómico de esa época.

Dos fantasmas y una muchacha que es una película también con dos de los grandes cómicos que tuvimos en México que fue Germán Valdés Tintán y su hermano, el loco Valdés que es fenomenal la película, aparte, para la época los efectos visuales que utilizaron son increíbles, es muy buena.

Entonces, ahí de esas cuatro películas que hice citas específicas.

It's often called Detroit's largest art object.

The Fisher Building is a colossal statement by legendary architect Albert Kahn.

Visible from nearly anywhere in the city, it's also a symbol of Detroit's proud past and hopeful future.

The Fisher Building is a beacon that pulls you toward it, and once you enter, if you're not impressed by the magnificent three-story arcade, lavishly adorned with frescoes and mosaics, well, I don't think you can be impressed.

How did this icon come to be?

The people we have to thank for, at least originally, are the Fisher Brothers, who made a killing selling fully enclosed cars to the dozens of different motor companies around Detroit in the turn of the 20th century.

They eventually, though, strike big, building first for Cadillac and then actually being bought out by General Motors for the equivalent of about $3 billion today.

And when you had that kind of money in 1920s America, what did you do?

You got into real estate and you built yourself a skyscraper, and the Fisher Brothers were no different, and they called on the architect of Detroit, Albert Kahn, to build this gorgeous structure for them.

I heard they told Albert Kahn, literally, spare no expense.

Albert Kahn had carte blanche.

If you're any sort of architect and you get that call, you're not going to hold back.

But when you're the architect of Detroit and you are pretty much given anything you want to build this structure, you're really going to go all out.

And Albert Kahn develops this massive plan for this beautiful office building that is going to be sort of a testament to the wealth creation of the Fisher Brothers.

It's going to be pretty rare for the time, pretty rare for today as well, a public building, a gift back to the people of Detroit, to the new adopted hometown of the Fisher Brothers.

And again, to build a structure like this, and to think about it in today's world of needing badges and ID cards to get into any skyscraper on the planet, the Fisher Building being this public place where you can come in and film documentaries or take tours, take photos, or just sit and reflect on what's around you, it's really rare.

It was rare then, it's rare today, and I am so thankful that they called on Albert Kahn to build something worthy of their vision.

Talk a little bit about the location, because when I first saw it, it was from actually the roof of the Guardian building, or very up high, and it's off on its own kind of, now the DIA is here, but it would have been a little bit of an enclave at the time, right?

Yeah, most definitely.

The Fisher Brothers want to build it downtown.

Woodward Avenue, the main north-south corridor in the entire city, really the entire region, but nobody's willing to sell the land the Fisher Brothers need, because their original plan calls for something way larger than what we have today.

Right now, don't get me wrong, it's big.

It's 441 feet tall, flanked by two 11 story wings, but the original plan called for two of these towers flanking a 60 story tower.

It would have been insanely huge and unable to be built downtown, so they choose up here.

They were across the street from GM, the new bosses when they first built.

They're on Grand Boulevard, a great way to get around the city at that time, and it also allows them to kind of own the neighborhood.

They are the marquee attraction in this neighborhood, and you mentioned that you can see it from a lot of different spots downtown, and Albert Kahn had this grand vision that the building would be both sort of bold, but happy to look at, commanding and beautiful.

And he loved the fact that it broke up the sight lines that were so common in American cities, where you look down a boulevard or a big street or an avenue, and you see out into the horizon.

The Fisher puts a stop point at Second Avenue.

It stands alone.

It's beautiful.

Whether you're south of here downtown or on Wade State's campus, or looking from any side of the city, the Fisher has this striking image that's unlike anything else in town.

I was introduced to composer Michael Kropf through my friends at New Music Detroit.

As it turns out, he's always wanted to write music inspired by the Fisher building.

It was like it had been out in the universe in my brain of very much wanting to write music for this building in particular, and this project kind of magically appeared.

And from the very first day that I stepped into this grand hall, I was imagining music filling this space.

So I could not be more excited about this opportunity.

So the ensemble was set working with New Music Detroit.

We knew the instrumentation for the Fisher building, and it includes soprano, which means text, of course.

Was that in your initial thoughts for Fisher building, or was that a new component of the project for you?

Not at all, I was always envisioning piano specifically for this building, and the reason for that is actually learning the story of the architect, Albert Kahn, and learning that he had been a piano prodigy as a young child.

And so I was imagining just piano notes echoing around the building.

But when being approached with the idea for this project with a much wider ensemble and text, it added all these new complications.

And so I spent some time panicking a little bit about that because I wasn't really sure what I was going to do, and then I just took a walk through the building and realized that there was text everywhere, all over the building.

And that became my starting point.

It was kind of a chance for the building to sing for itself.

As you say, Detroit is a city of music.

It's one of the first things people think of, cars and music.

And we're in the Fisher Building, which is cars, and Detroit is music.

How did that impact your music?

There's so many different routes you could have gone.

I've lately, as a composer, been really interested in setting up my compositions as conversations with other people.

In this case, the idea of having a conversation with the building itself and what the building was maybe trying to say.

And when I walk around this building and I saw these murals with all these universalist values and texts and things like that, the first kind of thing that came to me was almost like a boast.

It was very optimistic, very confident in itself.

And the building is kind of declaring these societal ideals.

And it's very convincing just being in this space.

Then, of course, you inject the entire story around it of the troubles that Detroit has been through and the way it's overcome those troubles and the incredible ways that it has thrived as a community.

And that, I think, then helped deepen what those words meant to me.

So I was thinking of the compositional process as this kind of back-and-forth between what I felt the building was maybe communicating and envisioning.

And my experience as this new resident of this city.
