Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwell there's a break in the case of the fatal shooting of a sayerville councilwoman as we told you last night police have charged a 28-year-old Virginia man for the murder of Eunice dream 4 roughly four months after she was gunned down outside her home on February 1st evidence uncovered by investigators shows that the two knew each other from church but not much else a motive is still unknown and as Ted Goldberg reports the family is still left with more questions than answers they've been praying that there is some breakthrough in this case and their prayers were answered after nearly four months of Silence authorities have arrested a man and charged him with murdering Sayreville councilwoman Eunice June 4.
I hope that today is the beginning of a healing process and also the beginning of a sense of justice for you and for Eunice the murder has shaken the community and no arrest will bring back the late Council woman however I do trust that Justice will be found through the criminal justice process the suspect is 28-year-old Rasheed Ali Bynum a Virginia native who was arrested in the Commonwealth yesterday morning he's awaiting extradition to the Middlesex County adult Correction Facility before a pre-trial detention Hearing in the superior court of New Jersey Bynum is accused of shooting June 4 multiple times outside of her home on February 1st this was a very complex extensive case with painstaking police work every single moment the prosecutor's office says it can prove that Bynum was in June 4's neighborhood just before and just after the shooting using a combination of video surveillance eyewitness testimony and cell phone data the investigation has led to a suspect but not a motive though it's likely that Bynum and June 4 knew each other because Bynum was listed as a contact in June 4's phone which was recovered from the crime scene Attorney John Wisniewski says the family wasn't familiar with the suspect's name when authorities told them about the arrest there's a lot of information to unpack here for the family even though as little as the family received today and all of you have received about the name of the accused and where he was from Beyond that uh for the family there are as many questions now as to why did he Target Eunice what was the motivation behind him targeting Eunice those are all unanswered at this time I want to thank the major crimes section of the Middlesex County prosecutor's office there's Sevierville Police Department the FBI the New Jersey State Police who worked arduously day and night so that we could bring Justice to the late councilwoman Eunice June 4.
I'm happy for the family that they have some direction of resolution um I'm proud of our police force who never give up Dan Buchanan is a former council president in Sayreville he never worked directly with June 4 but he says he met her a few times and called her a councilwoman with a bright future scary when it happens in your community um but something cerebral always has is that when we have adversity um something like this uh both sides of the Party come together Democratic leaders from June 4's District sent us a statement which reads in part this is welcome news to the Sayreville community and we are confident Justice will be served we hope this will bring some measure of comfort to councilwoman June Force family our community's prayers continue to be with them in sayerville I'm Ted Goldberg NJ Spotlight News [Music]
