Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Hi, I'm Steve "Schpaybo" Spirko.
And I'm here to rock your world, today we're shooting a video to my new song Rock You.
♪ Gonna' rock you, all night long ♪ - I've been working with Steve say, late nineties.
♪ In a song ♪ Steve sound is loud.
♪ It's never too late ♪ - I think the reason music really grabbed me was seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show back in the sixties, seeing them perform, something inside me made me want to play the drums.
(Fast Rock Drum Fill) I am honored to be in the Urban Dictionary.
A lot of people ask me about my stage name, Schpaybo.
Schpay is a word I created kind of as a contraction for what did you say?
Spchay?
And then everybody began saying Schpay, - Everybody knows Schpay, either bought a guitar from him, or they've got worked done from him, or they've seen him, or they've played in bands with him.
I mean, He's been around, yeah.
- Once the seventies rolled around.
I became friendly with a man named Cesar Diaz, who became quite famous working on Eric Clapton's guitars and working with Bob Dylan on the Rolling Stones.
I got in a band with him and we were very popular at the time and we played the local circuit.
And I continue playing through the seventies and the eighties, many different bands.
I look back at the seventies and eighties, they were parties on dudes.
That was some wild, crazy time.
I got into guitar playing as a second instrument, I wanted the ability to be able to create my own songs.
The first song I wrote, and the first music video I did was 1983.
It was called Croozin 4 A Broozin.
♪ My name is Schpay and I'm the man ♪ ♪ That plays the drums in this rocking band ♪ ♪ Understand ♪ - It was before the internet, so, You'd have to put in, you know, go watch a VHS tape at somebody's house.
♪We're cruising for a bruising ♪ ♪ this aint no nickel and dime ♪ But we would have parties and everybody would come over and, just watch it and enjoy it and laugh and sing along with it.
Well, there've been quite a few near misses in my career.
1995, I won ABC radio Z-rock, greatest drummer in the United States.
And then in 1997, ♪ You better take a chill pill ♪ ♪ 'Cause your life is filled with too much stress ♪ My song Stress made it into Musician Magazines, best unsigned band in America semifinals, which was a great honor.
And then in 2003, my song Crows Ate My Brain, got the Billboard World Song Contest.
♪ Excuse me, crows ate my brain ♪ ♪ And it drove me, rather insane ♪ Made it to the top 1500 in the world, not number one, but right up there, it's kind of amazing that somebody didn't pick up on some of my stuff.
I was kind of heartbroken that, geez, my songs are as good as anybody's, why can't I get on the radio?
Why can't I get mainstream play?
- Steve just eats and drinks and lives the music, and trying to keep things going, and trying to put things out because it makes him happy.
- I don't give up.
So I thought call a song, Fight Another Day.
♪ Fight another day ♪ And the opening to Fight Another Day is another character, Rocky Schpaybo running up my front porch steps with a guitar strapped on him.
When I do my videos, I always try to put something humorous in them.
Hey, drumstick dog anybody?
So I try to adapt different little props, And I came up with different characters.
- The motorcycle thing that was all him.
(Fast Rock Music Plays) - Who comes up with that stuff?
- But you know, he always has a good message in his song.
- Stand Together I feel as one of my very important videos, to promote peace and being together and loving the world.
♪ We all gotta stand together ♪ ♪ Red, Black, Yellow and White ♪ ♪ We all have to help each other ♪ ♪ So we can win this fight ♪ ♪ (Bouncy Synth Plays) ♪ I have been influenced by all this electronic dance music on internet site.
- Yeah he somehow or other landed on some European charts or something like that, and hooked up with all these cats over seas.
- So I figured, Hey, I'm going to do an EDM song.
♪ Party in the house ♪ Then I have my wife dancing, I think she did a great job.
So I did that and people ended up liking it, especially my friends in Europe.
For them to remix my song, the way they hear my music, and the way they adapt it to their style, it's just awesome.
- It's kind of brought a little bit of new life in the Schpaybo catalog, you know.
- No matter what happens and how many times I get knocked down, I just won't give up.
And I just want to keep making music that'll make people happy and take their mind off their troubles.
