I GOT MY FINE ARTS DEGREE IN CERAMICS.
AFTER THAT, GRADUATING, THE PROCESS WAS COLLECTING EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS.
WHILE I WAS COLLECTING THOSE TO BUILD MY STUDIO, I WAS WORKING FOR DIFFERENT ESSENCES.
I WAS BARTENDING AND WORKING FOR THE COLLEGE.
AS I WAS DOING THAT, AND WAS LEARNING THINGS I WASN'T ABLE TO LEARN IN THE CLASSROOM SETTING, SUCH AS RUNNING A SMALL BUSINESS, THE FINANCIALS OF RUNNING A SMALL BUSINESS IN TERMS OF HOW TO TALK TO PEOPLE, HOW TO ENGAGE WITH PEOPLE, BEING HELPFUL IN SALES.
THAT IS KIND OF HOW IT HAPPENED.
MY INSPIRATION COMES FROM THE EVERYDAY SIMPLE MOMENTS THAT BRING ME JOY THAT ARE OFTENTIMES OVERLOOKED.
THE LITTLE TINY SUNSETS OR DRINKING A YUMMY CUP OF COFFEE, PETTING A CAT OR A DOG.
THESE LITTLE MOMENTS THAT CAN BE VERY IMPACTFUL.
A LOT OF MY INSPIRATION OF THE ACTUAL PIECES AND CREATE COME FROM MY DAILY GRATITUDE PRACTICE OF THINGS I AM PERSONALLY GRATEFUL FOR AND I FEEL LIKE THAT CLASS PLATFORM IT'S OVER TO OTHER PEOPLE AS WELL.
I WORK IN A TECHNIQUE TOWARD CLASS INSTRUCTION.
I WILL OUT PIECES ON PLATFORMS LIKE YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE MAKING CUTOUT COOKIES, SAME KIND OF THING.
THEN I CUT THEM OUT INTO DIFFERENT SHAPES WITH DIFFERENT PATTERNS I HAVE MADE AND I TAKE THE SLABS AND TRANSFORM THEM INTO THREE-DIMENSIONAL FORMS.
THEN ONCE I DO THAT AND THEY TRIED A LITTLE BIT, THEN I WILL ADD THE COLOR, PAINT THAT ON AND FIRE IT.
IT IS A MULTILEVEL PROCESS BUT IT IS PRETTY BASIC.
CERAMICS ARE HARD, THEY ARE A HARD OBJECT.
I ALWAYS LOVE THE JUXTAPOSITION OF HARD AND SOFT AND HAVING SOMETHING THAT IS A HARD OBJECT THAT DOESN'T HAVE ANY GIVE OR PLAY TO IT TO HAVE THIS SOFT ESSENCE.
I ACHIEVE THAT WITH THE HANDBUILT NATURE.
IT'S GOING TO BE PERFECTLY IMPERFECT AND WITH A COLOR PALETTE AS WELL.
I MAKE ALL MY OWN GLAZES AND THEN I AM ABLE TO DO A DIFFERENT COLOR PALETTE THEN YOU WILL FIND IN YOUR TRADITIONAL CERAMIC GLAZES.
I WANTED MY COLOR PALETTE TO STAND OUT TO BE TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND ALSO WORK AND COINCIDE WITH FANATICALLY WHAT I AM TRYING TO DO.
SAY I AM GOING TO DO A NEW STYLE OF MARGARET, I'M GOING TO DO WE DIFFERENTIATE, HOW DOES THAT RELATE BACK TO WHAT I'M ALREADY MAKING, DOES IT MAKE SENSE IN THE COLLECTION, WHAT OTHER DESIGNS COME INTO ON IT?
IT IS KIND OF A LET'S DO SOME NEW BUT ALSO REACH BACK TO THE COLLECTION SO IT MAKES SENSE ALTOGETHER.
MY FAVORITE PART IS CONNECTING WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE.
THE CERAMICS COMMUNITY IS A WONDERFUL COMMUNITY TO BE IN.
IT IS EXPLORATORY, IT IS CURIOUS.
I LOVE BEING A PART OF THAT COMMUNITY AND I LOVE HER BEING PART OF THE LARGER ARTS COMMUNITY.
BY RUNNING A SMALL BUSINESS, I CAN ABLE TO SUSTAIN MYSELF IN THAT COMMUNITY AND BE ABLE TO DO WHAT I LOVE FULL TIME.
THAT IS WHAT I LOVE.
I THINK FOR ONE OF THESE THINGS THAT IS NOT SO GREAT ABOUT IT, IT IS JUST THE CONSISTENCY, THE UNKNOWN.
IF YOU ARE WORKING, AT LEAST IN THE PAST WHEN I WORKED A 9:00 TO 5:00 JOB, I SHOW UP AT 9:00, I AM THERE UNTIL 5:00, I GET THE MONEY.
IT IS A LITTLE MORE NUANCED TO HOW YOU ARE APPROACHING YOUR INCOME AND YOUR CONNECTIONS WITH PEOPLE IS DIFFERENT.
I HOPE THAT IT SPARKS A LITTLE JOIN IN AND HAS THOSE TINY MOMENTS WHERE, BECAUSE THEY ARE SEEING THAT IN MY WORK, THAT IT IS AN INVITATION TO INCORPORATE THAT INTO THEIR EVERYDAY LIFE AND CONNECT BACK WITH THEMSELVES.

THEY WERE ALL ACCUSED AND CONVICTED OF CRIMES THEY MAINTAIN THEY NEVER COMMITTED.
NOW OUT OF PRISON, THEY ARE RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT WRONGFUL CONVICTION AND TAKING THEIR STORY TO THE STAGE AS VOICES OF INJUSTICE.
>> I DON'T KNOW ANYMORE ABOUT THAT.
>> I DON'T KNOW HOW TO ACT.
I AM TOTALLY OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE.
IT SHOULD BE SEEN LIKE IT IS EASY BECAUSE IT IS JUST MY STORY BUT I TRY TO LOOK AT IT LIKE I AM HAVING A CONVERSATION.
WOULD LIKE THAT, THINK LIKE THAT, IT GETS EASIER.

WHEN I WAS YOUNG, THEN I GREW OLDER AND WHEN I GOT ARRESTED FOR THE CRIME I DIDN'T DO, AND WHEN I GOT OUT, JUST TO SEE MY STORY, HOW I HELD ON AND HOW I SURPRISED EVERYBODY.
EVERYBODY THOUGHT I WAS A KILLER.
AT THE END OF THE DAY, I SAVED MY NEPHEW'S LIFE BY DONATING A KIDNEY.
>> I BELIEVE IN USING THE LEAST AMOUNT OF WORDS IN GETTING ACROSS WHAT I'M TRYING TO GET ACROSS.
WE HAVE A SIMPLE JOB.
>> WE ARE HERE IN CUYAHOGA COUNTY, IT WAS JUST NOTABLE.
IT JUST JELLED FOR US TO COME TOGETHER AND TO FORM A GROUP THAT CAN USE THE ARTS, MENTAL ILLNESS AND LOCAL POLITICS AS FAR AS JUDGES, PROSECUTION RACES, AND WE ARE INTERESTED IN WHAT IS GOING ON RIGHT HERE.
THE PUBLIC THINKS EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE OKAY SEEING THAT WE GOT OUT BUT THEY DON'T SEE THE DENIALS, THEY DON'T SEE THE APPEALS THAT HAVE BEEN DENIED FROM ONE DISTRICT, ONE COURT TO THE NEXT.
THE HEARTBREAK.
>> WE WANT TO PUT FLESH AND BLOOD ONTO THE STORIES SO PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENED TO THE INDIVIDUAL, THAT TRAUMA, TO THE FAMILIES AND TO THE COMMUNITY.
>> OUR SYSTEM STILL DOESN'T LIKE TO ADMIT THAT THEY MESSED UP.
THEY DON'T WANT TO ADMIT THAT.
YOU BARELY EVER SEEN A COURT OFFICIAL OR A PROSECUTOR OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT APOLOGIZE FOR WHAT THEY DID TO THE PERSON.
>> YOU JUST LISTEN TO ME AND I CAN GET YOU A PLEA OR YOU CAN TAKE IT TO TRIAL AND YOU WILL BE WASTING YOUR GRIEF.
>> I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING.
>> WE CALLED IT "THE LYNCHED AMONG US" BECAUSE WE DID SOME RESEARCH.
WE SAW SOME STRIKING SIMILARITIES BETWEEN WRONGFUL CONVICTIONS AND THE LYNCHINGS FROM BACK IN THE EARLY 1800s OR 1900s.
THOSE SIMILARITIES, THESE MOBS WERE FORMED BECAUSE OF ALLEGATIONS, MANY TIMES FALSE ALLEGATIONS.
MANY OF THE MENU HAVE BEEN INJURED BY WRONGFUL CONVICTION HAVE HAD EVIDENCE HIDDEN FROM THEM, THEY HAVE FABRICATED EVIDENCE, FALSE ACCUSATIONS HURLED AGAINST THEM.
>> CHANGE MY LIFE BY AN ENTRY AND A COMPUTER.
YOU ARE ALREADY A NUMBER.
>> THIS JUDGE, AT ONE POINT, WHEN HE WAS ACCUSED, THEY WERE TEENAGERS ACCUSED OF A HORRIBLE SHOOTING.
TWO PEOPLE.
POLICE EVEN SAID THEY SHOT AT THEM.
BUT, A JUDGE READ THAT EVIDENCE IN THE HEIGHT OF THE EXTERIOR OF THE CASE AND SAID, YOU KNOW WHAT, SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT HERE.
SHE CHOSE TO RELEASE THEM.
>> 2007 HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, SOUTH HIGH.
>> FOR SOME REASON, SOME DECISION-MAKERS SAID LET'S GO TO THIS KIDS GRADUATION.
A MOMENT HE WILL NEVER FORGET IN HIS LIFE, AND ARREST HIM.
AND BRING HIM BACK TO JAIL WHEN HE WAS SENTENCED TO ASTRONOMICAL TIME.

YOU ARE WATCHING IT AND YOU ARE IN IT.
WHEN YOU LEAVE, IT BECOMES MORE IMPACTFUL THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO VISUALIZE WHAT WE ARE SAYING.
IT IS A PART OF THE HEALING JOURNEY WHEN YOU USE THE ARTS TO EXPRESS YOURSELF.
YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER, WE CAME FROM A PLACE THAT TRIES TO TAKE THAT FROM YOU.
>> DEFINITELY RAISING AWARENESS THAT WRONGFUL CONVICTION IS A HUGE PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED.
I FEEL LIKE IT IS NOT BEING ADDRESSED.
THESE ARE HUMAN BEING LIVES THAT ARE BEING TAKEN AWAY FROM US.
THESE ARE PEOPLE THAT WE LOSE IN PRISON THAT WERE NEVER SEEN AGAIN.
MOMENTS OF OUR KIDS LIVES WE WILL NEVER GET BACK AGAIN.
I JUST FEEL LIKE NOBODY SEES THIS AS URGENT.
THIS HAS TO STOP RIGHT NOW.
WE CAN'T KEEP SENDING INNOCENT PEOPLE TO PRISON FOR CRIMES THEY DIDN'T COMMIT AND LET THEM OUT LIKE EVERYTHING IS OKAY.
>> IT IS MORE THAN JUST MY WRONGFUL CONVICTION, IT IS MY FAMILY AS WELL.
I LOST FAMILY MEMBERS THROUGHOUT THIS.
WHEN I CAME HOME, I CAME HOME TO A WHOLE NEW WORLD.
I AM THINKING ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO CARE FOR ME, LOVE ME THE MOST.
A LOT OF THEM WERE GONE.
IT IS DEEP.
IT IS MORE THAN JUST YOU THAT HAS TO GO THROUGH THINGS, IT IS YOUR WHOLE FAMILY AND THE PEOPLE THAT YOU KNOW.
YOU COME HOME, 27 YEARS AND SIX MONTHS AND 20 DAYS THAT IS A WHOLE LIFETIME.
YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW THE PEOPLE THAT YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW.
YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS, PEOPLE CHANGE.
THE WORLD CHANGES.

IT HAS BEEN ROUGH.
I HAVE FOUR SONS.
I HAVE A DAUGHTER, YOU KNOW.
LIKE STARTING A RELATIONSHIP WITH PEOPLE IS HARD FOR ME BECAUSE I AM SO DETACHED FROM EVERYBODY RIGHT NOW.
THEY ARE LIKE MEN, ARE YOU COMING TO THE PARTY?
I PROBABLY WON'T COME.

THE IDEA WAS ALWAYS TO DO A VIDEO IN WHICH THERE WOULD BE NO PHYSICAL BODIES IN THE VIDEO I WANTED THE VIEWER WHO WALKED INTO THE SPACE TO FEEL LIKE THEY WERE OCCUPYING THAT SPACE, THAT SORT OF SENSATION THAT THEY WERE PART OF THIS EXPERIENCE.
AS A CUBAN, I KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO MIGRATE BY SEA BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THIS FOR THE LAST 50 YEARS.
I WANTED TO USE A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE IN THAT KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING AND I WANTED TO TAKE THAT AND OPEN IT UP TO THE GREATER GLOBAL CRISIS THAT IS HAPPENING, ESPECIALLY THAT STARTED TO HAPPEN IN 2015 IN EUROPE AS OF THE SYRIAN REFUGEES.
WHEN WE THINK ABOUT MIGRATION RIGHT NOW, WE IMAGINE PEOPLE IN THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES COMING TO AMERICA, EVEN TO EUROPE ESCAPING POVERTY SOMETIMES WAR, FAMINE.
BUT, WE ARE EXPERIENCING THE PANDEMIC RIGHT NOW THAT HAS MADE LIKE IF YOU ARE IN SOME CITIES, PEOPLE HAVE CHOSEN TO LEAVE THE CITY AND GO TO THE COUNTRY.
SO, THE WHOLE IDEA WAS PARTLY WITH THE VIDEO NOT HAVING AN INDIVIDUAL BE REPRESENTED IN THE VIDEO, WHAT TO DO WITH THAT.
DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE, DUE TO SOME OTHER SITUATIONS, ANYONE OF US AT ANY PARTICULAR TIME RIGHT NOW COULD OR WOULD BE FORCED TO MIGRATE.
WHEN YOU FIRST ENTER THE SPACE, IT IS DEALING WITH THE HISTORY OF WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO ENCOUNTER.

YOU GO FROM BEING A PERSON TO BEING THOUGHT OF AS CARGO AND AS A PACKAGE.
HERE YOU ARE SEEING THE CONTEMPORARY ART FORM.
THE VIDEO TAKES YOU FROM ONE DAY IN THE LIFE ALMOST BUT THE JOURNEY BEGINS AND IT TAKES YOU THROUGH THE WHOLE PROCESS OF WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF MAYBE THERE WAS A CAPSIZE.
THE VIDEO ENDS VERY SLOWLY WITH THE SORT OF SMALL VIEW THAN IN LARGE AND WHAT SEEMS LIKE COUNTLESS NUMBERS OF CLOTHING THAT HAS WASHED UP ON THE SHORE, THEN SLOWLY BUT SURELY, THE VIDEO CAN STILL EXPAND AND MOVE UP AND YOU SEE THE OCEAN AGAIN AND THEN THE SUNSET AND YOU HEAR THE MOTOR IN THE DISTANCE AND THE JOURNEY BEGINS AGAIN.

WE COMMISSION ARTISTS TO CREATE THESE LARGE-SCALE SITE-SPECIFIC INSTALLATIONS.
IT WILL NEVER SEE THESE EXHIBITIONS IN ANOTHER PLACE, ONLY HERE AT LOCUST PROJECTS.
THEY ARE TYPICALLY IMMERSIVE AND WE REALLY GIVE ARTISTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIMENT IN NEW MEDIA WITH NEW IDEAS.
IN OUR 2020-2021 SEASON, WE ARE FOCUSING ON MIAMI WOMEN ARTISTS AND TURNING THE SPACE OVER TO THEM.
WE HAVE SEEN CHRISTINA PETERSON, WHO WAS ABLE TO REALIZE A PROJECT SHE HAD BEEN WANTING TO DO FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS, WHICH WAS TO CREATE A CEMETERY IN TO COVER THE FLOORS WITH PINE NEEDLES AND TO FILL THE ROOM WITH THE SOUND OF A SONG CALLED "IN THE PINES," AND ACTUAL TOMBSTONES THAT MEMORIALIZE REALLY IMPORTANT FIGURES FROM SOUTH FLORIDA HISTORY BUT ALSO MEMORIALIZE THE CREATURES THAT HAVE BEEN LOST DUE TO DEVELOPMENT IN THE PINE BACKBENDS OF THE EVERGLADES.
