Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipA retired Logan County farmer, missed being out in the fields, planting, harvesting and feeding.
Then he came across an opportunity to do those things again for someone else.
He's now being recognized for his efforts in helping Midwestern farm families through a time of crisis.
Kenneth Kyle of Auburn first learned about an organization helping farmers in times of crisis by reading about it in a magazine.
I just read the article and I thought it sounded interesting.
So I went online and looked it up and filled out an application.
When he got the call, his help was needed.
He was initially going to be gone for a week.
She got ahold of me and she said, Can you stay longer?
I said, Yes, ma'am.
How long you need will stay.
She said, As long as you can just call me back every year.
I keep going back after that.
Farm Rescue is a nonprofit founded in 2005.
That supports 70 to 100 farm families a year.
The whole goal is to basically extend the livelihood of farm and ranch families, especially during a time of crisis.
That's why we exist.
It's about bringing in volunteers and equipment to provide free planting, haying, harvesting and livestock feeding assistance to those families during a time of, you know, unexpected injury, illness or natural disaster.
It really keeps you humble about your existence, your health.
You're helping somebody else's livelihood.
Depends on four volunteers like Ken and Kyle.
It's about more than the farm work, but also forging friendships and building relationships.
You keep up with people that you help.
They become family.
Kyle was recently recognized with Farm Rescue's Good Samaritan Award.
He's truly become indispensable for us.
It's incredible the time and work that he devotes to our mission.
He's touched a lot of lives and a lot of communities honestly throughout the years and truly been a blessing to Farm Rescue.
I don't consider myself a volunteer.
I'm just a farmer helping another farmer that needs help at the time.
Kenneth Kyle responds to the mid-western United States twice a year in the spring and in the fall, often to plant or harvest a thousand acres in a couple of weeks or more.
The people he's helping are grateful.
He grabbed me and bear hug me, tears running down his cheeks and said, I don't know what I would have done if you all can account.
Farmers are feeding the world.
Plain and simple.
Each and every one of those farm families is important to to their community and to the region.
To the country.
He is helping other people, which are tremendously enjoy.
But I get to farm again.
You know.
