[car engine] Passing back and forth, [car engine] holding the corners, [car engine] mid fight.
[car engine] Thats like the climax.
[car engine] The peak.
[car engine] A quarter midget is a quarter of the size of a midget car.
Midget cars are one of the larger cars, so our cars are scaled down to a quarter of the size.
[engine revving] Quarter midget racing is for kids aged five to seventeen.
We do start some kids at four and a half.
I started since I was a little over four and a half, I think.
And, you learn more the more you race.
I'm still learning stuff.
[music] I just keep focused by looking at what's ahead of me.
I mean, the car goes where you look.
If you're looking where your car's not going, that's usually where problems kind of start.
So we have three clubs in the state of Colorado: we have SCQMA, which is ours; and then we have PPQMA which is out of Colorado Springs which is Pikes Peak Quarter Midget Association; and then in Denver, Colorado, is our RMQMA which is Rocky Mountain Quarter Midget Association.
And the three clubs combined have a series called the Front Range Series.
And then the two clubs between Pueblo and Springs have a series called the SCS series.
Ready, Blake?
Yeah.
Here we go.
A couple of years ago, NASCAR actually sanctioned our quarter midget association.
So we are under the NASCAR umbrella right now, which definitely opens the door for our drivers to go on to the next steps.
And there are a lot of NASCAR drivers that started in quarter midget.
So it's super exciting.
[car engine] There is, on a national level its the NASCAR Youth Series, and they run races all over the United States.
We're actually hosting one this year in Colorado Springs.
And at those national races, there's anywhere from three to four hundred cars battling it out.
[car engine] There's, like, a certain pattern you want to run, so you want to make sure youre getting it to the T on this pattern.
Once you come up on a car, you're just waiting until it could come out of the corner to slip under ‘em, or going like mid straight.
I'm mostly thinking about, “How am I going to get to the next car?
” “How am I going to pass ‘em?
” “Whos in front of them?
” We started out both of our kids at four and a half, and we both run the track here now.
So we are a committed race car family, I love watching my kids race.
I used to get, mild heart palpitations when they'd go out when they were younger.
I think I get more nervous than they do sometimes, but it's definitely a way to get them comfortable with the race cars.
All of our cars are safety inspected every year.
Suits have to be fire rated.
We're here to teach them how to drive, respectfully and have a good time out on the track.
[car engine] Perfect!
Good job, baby.
Here you go.
Whatd you think?
Wherever you go, you know somebody in the quarter midget community.
And that might not be at a quarter midget track, but at another track.
Its a huge family, everybody supporting the kids, because that's what we're here for.
Did that feel better?
Yeah.
Okay.
You feel the car, how you control it?
You steer it.
You stop it.
You feel that?
Good job.
I want to race full size sprint cars.
My goal is to just keep go to get to a bigger car.
I guess [Car engines] Something to inspire new drivers would be Don't give up.
You may not do great when you start, that's a given, but, the roads better ahead.
[car engine decelerating]
When life gives you a house, move it.
