Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(inquisitive music) - Hello, I'm Stephen Hegg in the "Crosscut" KCTS 9 newsroom.
(gentle ambient music) Sonia Joseph wants to make sure Washington State lawmakers don't forget her son's story.
Giovann Joseph-McDade was shot and killed by Kent Police after a car chase in 2017.
Last year, the legislature overhauled police accountability laws, changing rules for police vehicle pursuit and use of force.
But many law enforcement officials said changes made in 2021 went too far, and lawmakers are now looking to amend those new policing laws to address police concerns.
Among the latest changes, letting officers with reasonable suspicion of a crime, again, engage in car chases.
And, again, give more flexibility to police to use physical force.
Sonia Joseph and the Coalition for Police Accountability oppose amendments, saying it would expose people of color to more racial profiling and violence at the hands of police.
I'm Stephen Hegg, be sure to check out our legislative bill tracker.
