Election officials across Washington state may soon have extra money to break down the barriers that often prevent county jail inmates from voting.
Governor Jay Inslee's proposed budget for 2022 allocates $628,000 to the secretary of state's office to distribute to 10 county jails.
The funds are to help them improve voter awareness, registration and voting.
Grants would be allocated in advance of this year's August primary and November general elections.
People being held in county jails have the right to register and vote while there, but voting rights advocates have encountered two major hurdles in increasing voting from jail, logistical issues of voting from jail in a vote by mail state, and a lack of awareness of voting rights.
For those convicted of a felony, their right to vote is restricted only while they are physically serving time in state or federal prison.
I'm Stephen Hegg.
