Along with a historic downtown, Ferndale is known for connecting people and nature indoors and out.
100 years ago, this building did this.
Today it connects people to nature in ways I've never seen before.
You're not going to believe this.
This is Flow Motion.
I consider myself an expert on spas, but I've never seen anything like this before.
Let's go explore.
All right, now I'm dressed for success.
I'm about to embark on the world's first spa speedrun.
We're in the Energy Healing Room now.
Essential oils for chakra alignment.
A Himalayan salt wall.
And vibrational sound therapy.
And this is the Light Therapy Treatment Room.
Yellow light, great for your skin.
Red light.
My mitochondria has never been happier.
And this is the Infrared Sauna.
Deep sweat detox.
Say hello to the Celestial Suite.
Sound bathes, aerial yoga, and lawn chairs and space.
These are amethysts.
And in this building, they're definitely not alone.
You're going to want to check out this next room.
This is the Amethyst Cave.
I've never seen anything like this before.
That sound you hear behind me is a saltwater brine that mimics the ocean air.
This is a great place to sit and enjoy nature inside.
As cool as that room was, it is only the second coolest room in this building.
Let's go check out the Salt Cave and meet the woman who made all of this possible.
Alyssa, this room is amazing.
Can you tell me more about it?
Sure.
Our Himalayan Salt Cav.. on the walls and the floor.
It's great because you can get your hands and your feet in the salt pebble floor.
We have blocks and bricks to stack and build and make shapes with.
We have a rake where you can do some Zen gardening, and you can even recline and relax in our zero gravity chairs during a halo therapy session, where our machine mimics the underground conditions of a salt mine with the salt actually in the air.
That's so cool!
You have done an incredible job of bringing nature in here for us all to enjoy.
And as incredible as that is, it's even better to go outside and play.
Let's go check out Ferndale.
Let's check it out.
Hey, you look a lot like that woman in the first half of the video.
I have another title too.
Well, where are we at today?
This is the Fragrance Garden at Hovander Park, and it's filled with flowers of all kinds.
You know, it's too bad we can't do a scratch and sniff version of this.
All right, so tell me about this beautiful park.
This park is called Hovander Park, and it's over 300 acres.
There are big, wide open spaces that people come to enjoy.
It's been in the Whatcom County Park hands for over 50 years now.
And a lot of people love the recreation, the boat launch.
There's a really popular dog park.
Beautiful flower gardens and historic architecture, including that big red barn that Hovander Park is famous for.
Oh, wonderful.
So this is the exact barn from the mural earlier?
That's right.
That's awesome.
I've always wanted to know why are barns painte.. Well, this barn is painted red because they mixed oil with the iron rich soil here.
And that's how it got that color.
And I also heard it's the cheapest color available.
That makes sense.
Yeah.
Well, should we check out what's inside?
Sure.
I have one more thing I'd like to show you.
Okay, let's do it.
Angela, this is what I wanted to show you.
This rowboat.
Why does a boat have to do with the barn?
Well, let me tell you.
The Hovander family actually had trouble from time to time with their neighbors.
So they weren't able to travel the roads that went through their neighbors property to get to Ferndale to buy and sell what they needed.
So the Hovander children especially needed to attend school, and they would row across the Nooksack River every day to attend school.
Wow.
Incredible.
What a great story to end on.
I am loving Ferndale.
Thank you so much for having us today.
I'm Angela.
Thanks for exploring.
We'll see you.
