New police recruits to aid Newark anti-violence initiatives

More than 100 recruits for Newark Police Academy are on track to graduate in May

Amid an increase in gun violence and crime in Newark, more than 100 recruits are joining the Newark Police Academy, to help shore up a force that lost many during the pandemic. “We had the coronavirus pandemic hit the department hard. We had nine members pass away; we had dozens of other officers retire ... So the department was depleted in strength,” said Director of Public Safety Brian O'Hara.
