- [Jake] One of the tools we think comes in pretty handy in songwriting is figurative language.
- [Esther] Figurative language uses words to paint pictures and draw comparisons.
- [Jake] To practice, grab your notebooks, tablets, or phones.
- [Esther] Choose an emotion like joy or anger.
- [Jake] And write down words, or even draw pictures of stuff you can compare those emotions to.
- [Esther] My joy is a mountain.
It rises above the trees and mist, towers over cities below.
- [Jake] Anger can sneak up on you.
Like a panther, it's ready to pounce.
And we have to look out for it and avoid that bite.
- [Esther] Write what you know and what you feel.
- [Jake] And keep the music coming.
