Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship-Okay, -so now that we are familiar -with how to start a fire, -we need to know how to build -and maintain a fire.
-So, yes.
Brayden.
-Do we need lighter -fluid to start the fire?
-No, of course not.
-That is what -the tinder is for.
-Speaking of which, -other than the tinder, -there are -two more types of material -for building the fire.
The.
-No, no, no, I am on you.
-What are you doing?
-Oh, we figured -we'd get things started -while you finish -your dissertation.
-Is the thing you want to get -started at forest fire?
-Of course not.
-We are only lighting this -little pile of dandelion -fluff.
It's just Tinder.
-Oh.
Of course.
-And what is that innocent -little pile of tinder -sitting on?
-Nothing.
-Just these dead leaves.
-And what would you call -that?
-Oh, that's Tinder.
-We're so sorry.
-Before -you know how to make a fire, -you must know fire safety.
-That means making certain -that the surrounding area -is free of debris.
-Not just on the ground, -but also above you.
-Low hanging tree -branches can catch.
-Plus have an available means -of extinguishing the fire.
-And when it is out, -spread the coals and further -soak them to make sure -none of them are hiding in -still hot fire.
-Safety is essential -to responsible fire making.
-Now, when the Kai.
-What are you doing?
-Oh, I'm not starting a fire.
-I just wanted to be prepared -for when it's time -to start a fire.
-So I'm practicing on this -little piece of kindling.
-Okay, actually, that log -would be considered fuel.
-Kindling is smaller material -like this.
-Oh, right.
On fuel.
-Kindling?
Tinder.
Very good.
-It will not work to just -try and set fuel on fire.
-You must build up the fire -using gradually larger -material.
-Start with the tinder, -then kindling.
-And finally the largest -material which we call fuel.
-Does this make sense?
-Oh, yes.
Braden.
-Is this a good stick?
-Sure.
-That's actually somewhere -between kindling and fuel.
-Okay, so now we have.
-Yes, Braden.
Do you want it?
-No, I'm just put it -in one of the piles -and we'll burn it -in the fire later.
-So.
Oh, what?
-Could I maybe just keep it?
-Yes.
Fine.
Keep it.
-I don't care.
Oh, good.
-Because I love it.
Great.
-Can I finish explaining -how to build the fire now?
-Sorry, I actually have -a question before we start.
-Okay.
No, I need a break -before I have a breakdown.
-Did you see, -we, Jin.
-What was your question?
-Well, -as you know, we've been -trying to reconnect -to nature.
-Yes, and we basically worked -our way back through time -to find the origin of where -that disconnect began.
-So if humans ability to make -and control -fire is kind of where -that disconnect started, -then is continuing to make -fire like we're about to do, -kind of perpetuating -that disconnection.
-Okay.
Let me ask you this.
-How are you going about -reconnecting to nature?
-Mainly just by going out -and being in it, -I guess, paying closer -attention to it.
-Yeah.
Interacting with it.
-Right.
Respectfully.
-Very good.
-So let's say -you were to witness -lightning striking a tree -and a tree catching fire.
-Okay.
-Then the tree falls -into a nearby pond -and the fire goes out.
-All right.
-What have you learned?
-That lightning -can start fires -and that water -extinguishes fire.
-And where did you learn that -from?
-Oh, nature.
-And did learning that -disconnect you from nature?
-No.
If anything, it would -strengthen our connection -to nature.
-Exactly.
-More fire is vital -to the healthy functioning -of many ecosystems.
-There are even plants -whose seeds require fire -in order to germinate.
-No way.
Way.
-And there are animals -who are drawn -to recently burned areas -in order to feed -on the fresh vegetation -that grows after a fire.
-And humans -learn this through careful -observation -and respectful interaction -with these ecosystems, -just as you are doing now.
-That's so cool!
-This is what allowed them -to exploit such things -to their benefit.
-And of course, doing -so did not disconnect them -from nature, -but rather strengthen -their connection to nature.
-That makes a lot of sense.
-But ancient humans -were always aware -of something -that in the modern world -has been all but forgotten.
-What's that?
-That we are not a part from, -but rather a part of nature?
-So you see, -the disconnect -is not out here.
-It is not an external -disconnection.
-It is up here.
-It is internal.
-Bong!
-Now, who's ready to learn -how to build -some different fires?
