COVID-19 has thinned ranks of EMS workers and police officers across New Jersey. Some have died, hundreds are in quarantine. At one point, Newark University Hospital EMTs fell 30 to 40 calls behind. But as rescue squads welcome FEMA reinforcements, crews are catching up and trying to avoid burning out.
