Trudy Laing.

Trudy and I have dined on several occasions.
-Hello, John.
-Trudy's here to report a missing person.
(Trudy) A 24-year-old Kosovan girl.
She was a seamstress back home and I helped her set up business here.
-What's her name?
-Merlinda Kelmendi.
-And when was she last seen?
-Just over two weeks ago.
(Rebus) Well, she's a friend.

I've been away on holiday.
(Rebus) Was anything troubling her?
(Trudy) Yeah.
That's why I'm worried.
There's this young man, Danny McLeese.
She told me that he--he watches her.
(Siobhan) Did she make a complaint against him?
(Trudy) No, no.
(Rebus) You think he's, uh, he's done something?
(Trudy) I don't know, I really don't know.
But I know Merlinda and I just know that she wouldn't leave like this.
(Gill) I think we could make some inquiries.
(Trudy) Good.

(soft music) ♪ (Rebus) Okay, I'll look into this.
♪ You're still at the same address, hm?
(Trudy) Yeah.
(Gill) Oh, and you can take Sergeant Clarke along on this.
(Rebus) Very well, ma'am.
(Siobhan) So, you and Trudy Laing?
♪ My ex-wife and Trudy were mates.

(Rebus) Trudy Laing says she's been pestered by a Danny McLeese.
(Ian) I don't know about that.
I knew he'd been hanging around outside Merlinda's shop, but when I asked if she wanted him moved, she said she didn't mind him being there.
Him and his older brother Si are the local hoodlums, eh?
(Rebus) Where will we find them?
(children playing) (soft, dark music) ♪ (grill sizzling) (indistinct chatter) Si McLeese, Inspector Rebus and DS Clarke.
(soft, tense music) ♪ I bet you look forward to clocking on in the morning.
♪ (Rebus) I want to speak to your brother.

(Siobhan) We just want to talk to him.
(Si) I haven't seen my brother in weeks.
(Rebus) Is that normal?
(Si) Danny comes and goes.

♪ (Rebus) Do you mind if we look downstairs in your flat?
-Do you have a warrant?

Then I mind.
(laughs) (dog panting) ♪ (Siobhan) If he turns up, get him to call us.
(Si) You'd better get her out of the sun and into the shade, pronto.
(Rebus) Nice place you've got here.
(Si) If I'd known you were coming.
(indistinct chatter) (sharpening knives) ♪ (children playing) (soft, tense music) ♪ (door opening) ♪ (weeping) ♪ (Gill) We've had something through from Traffic.
-That was quick.
-Well, yes and no.
They've been trying to get hold of Merlinda for a couple of weeks.
(Siobhan) What do they want to see her about?
Her car was involved in an incident.
It's all on your desk.
(Trudy) I can't believe what I'm hearing.
You're telling me that Merlinda's gone off with Danny McLeese, that cretin?
Come on, John, she wouldn't douse that creep if he was on fire!
All the facts point to them having gone off together.
They were seen in her car, kissing.
Also, the local copper offered to move him from outside the shop, she said she didn't mind him being there.
(Trudy) Ian Henderson said that?
No, I don't believe you.
-Oh!
-Ian Henderson is a first-rate policeman, and that scenario simply does not ring true.
-That is what he said.
-John, do you know why you're able to believe in this crap?
Because you don't know what goes on down in that place, And if you did, you would not entertain this notion for a split second.
(vehicle engine running) To the executive building, please.
(soft, tense music) ♪ (indistinct chatter) ♪ (Rebus) Chief Superintendent, what brings you to the mean and melting streets of Knoxland?

Well, on the shop floor this morning we have this poor gentleman.

♪ (Rebus) The victim is very definitely foreign, but I couldn't be specific about his ethnic origin (indistinct), could you?
But the killer could.
Which means that he or she had at least a passing acquaintance with the victim.
(clothing rustling) And there's the language used, you see.
"Kurdish swine."
A bit limp-wristed, don't you think?
Hardly the lingua franca of Knoxland.
It does look like a race crime and we don't need that.
(officer) That's all there is, sir.

-Siobhan!
-And you've never seen him on the estate before?
(officer) I don't think so.

(Gill) We need a swift result on this one.
(seagulls calling) The local MSP is holding her surgery this morning.

(Rebus) Um, I'll appraise Trudy of the situation on the shop floor.
There's a dead man in there.

(dog barking) Now, when an adult goes missing, we make a note of it, we make an appeal, we put out some photos.
Because that's all we can afford to do.
Everybody wants it done on the cheap.
Now for us, on the cheap means deciding what we can and can't afford to do.
Now, remember that next time you promise your voters more for less.
If this is a murder, it will be investigated rigorously.
(Trudy) Well, I guess that's me told.
(Rebus) Yeah.

(siren) (children playing) ♪ Yep.

(Rebus) A new padlock fitted.

♪ (Siobhan) That's Whitemire Detention Center, isn't it?

(Jim) And you must be, well, the other one they mentioned.
I'm Jim Considine.
I'm IC here at Whitemire.
(Rebus) "Detain yes, degrade no."
(Jim) I made it up myself.
Sort of a personal mission statement.
Yet there are those out there who would call me a jailer.
I work for a world-class company and I'm responsible for over a thousand units -in this facility.
-Now-- (Jim) Not all of them are easy to rub along with.
Let them stay in the country?
It wouldn't be enough for some of them.

(Rebus) I was about to say, it must be a different type of immigrant you're getting these days, Mr. Considine, 'cause when the Rebus clan got off the boat from Gdansk, they were just happy to be here.

(Rebus) Well, Sunburst, I've recently seen photographs of this terrible place.
Photographs taken from every angle.
And I'm betting that you and your colleagues here have seen the photographer at work.
(Sunburst) And you expect us to help you catch him?
The man in question is dead.
(soft music) ♪ (Sunburst) His... ♪ His family is in there.

(Rebus) How?
(Sunburst) With the help of the law, he said.
That's when I knew they had driven him mad.
-Who?
-The people who sanction such places.

(phone beeps off) They've got some forensics for us.
Then go get them and bring them to me.
(change clinking) (Siobhan) Thank you.
(Rebus) There were traces of blood on the sword blade.
One from the dead man, the second anonymous.
-Blood from the curtain.
-Matched the anonymous trace.
(Rebus) Sword was wrapped in the curtain?
Two types of blood on the sword.
(Siobhan) Mm-hm.
-Go on.
-Fibers found on the curtain were from the insulation material on a water heater.
So the sword was probably hidden behind the heater.
And the last thing, there was a coat of arms on the sword.
It belongs to the Bane family.
The sword was stolen from Bane Hall House in Fife six years ago.
Fingerprints?
Not on the handle, but on the blade.
They belong to Danny McLeese.
So forgetting the legal owners for a moment, it could be said that, latterly, this sword has been the sword of Dan McLeese.
(chuckles) (soft, tense music) (children playing) (boy) Hey, Jack!

(crying continues) (Siobhan) Who says he's done anything?
(Si sighs) We just want to talk to him about the death of Muzaffer Yurgi.
(laughs) (Si) So that's it?
Some scrounger gets croaked, you need a quick result, so it's fit up Danny McLeese time?
We haven't said Mr. Yurgi was murdered.
You want to stitch up my brother, go ahead, 'cause you're gonna end up looking so stupid.

(Siobhan) That'll be the second thing on our list.
(Rebus) What?

(soft, tense music) ♪ We can do without the cuffs, Jim.
(Jim) Is there a back door out of here?

♪ (Jim) You can never be too careful.
(cuffs unlocking) ♪ (somber music) ♪ (Siobhan) Has she gone?
(Rebus) Yes, she's gone.
(Siobhan) Her husband's fingerprints turned up on this.
It was sent anonymously to "The Chief of Police, Edinburgh."
Must be what they call the Chief Constable where Mr. Yurgi comes from.
There's a note with it.
It says, "Soon you will hear something explosive on this place."
-Explosive?
-Which is why it was processed and put on file.
When Yurgi spoke to the women at the protest camp, he said he was going to get his family out with the help of the law.
Some sort of blackmail, do you suppose?
"Let my family go or I'll blow up the estate"?
Hmm?
The post mortem's this afternoon, Siobhan.
Let's busy ourselves till then.
(dog barking) (Ian) My boss showed me this when it came in.

♪ (Ian) I expect, you know, fellow countrymen and all that.
♪ (Rebus) Muzaffer Yurgi was hit just once.
(Siobhan) Once?
(Rebus) The blow killed him.
(office sounds) Cerebral aneurysm.
The kind of thing that does for boxers.
Don't think you've got it and then pop!
(Siobhan) Where does the sword come in?
(Rebus) Hardly broke the skin.
And it was used after he was dead.
What's that about?
To cover something up?
To confuse us?
Well?
What's the verdict?
Probably murder.

(Rebus) Mr. Demir lives on Knoxland.
He's Kurdish.
Occupation: handyman.
We think he knew Mr. Yurgi.
(Gill) Then lift him.
(Rebus) Not yet.

(soft music) ♪ Mr. Demir.
♪ Thanks for coming.
♪ A visitor brings ten blessings, eats one and leaves nine.

(Sabri) I don't know many sayings.
Well, for a policeman, a visitor doesn't leave blessings.
He leaves traces of his visit.
Take the shop that Muzaffer Yurgi was hiding in, for example.
I think you visited him.
And I know that you will have left traces.
Fingerprints on the lock on the door, for example.
Now I have no desire to see you punished for something that I would have done in the circumstances.
Muzaffer came to me for help.
So I helped.
Muzaffer was murdered.
Do you have any idea who could have done such a terrible thing?
(Sabri) McLeese, the young one.
He once threatened Muzaffer.
Maybe it was he who hit him.

Who told you he'd been hit?

(Sabri) I know of no plan.

♪ That said, there aren't many that would go to this amount of trouble for him.
Well, as I was saying to someone else recently, my own people came to this country as strangers and some of them had to go through quite a lot.

♪ (cell phone ringing) ♪ (machinery whirring) (policeman) Stand back there.

(John) Why do you ask?
He just seemed troubled.
And now he's not answering his phone.
-Maybe he's gone out.
-John, he doesn't go out.
He's got the action group and the singles club, but neither are on tonight.
John.

(suspenseful music) Mr. Demir?

(Siobhan) When they told me where to pick you up, I thought they were joking.

Though I could understand why you wouldn't, being young and no doubt existentialist.
Watching people try to be good, it's an antidote to the job.
Makes me feel positively optimistic.
Does he have any family?
(Ian) No.
But he was desperate to start one.
He even went out and joined a singles club.
Used to wind him up about that.

Aye, stuff like that.
"No, Jan," he'd say.
Never could quite manage "Ian."

(Siobhan) The same paint that was used at the murder scene.
You can even see where he kept the paint pot.
Sabri murdered Yurgi.
(John) Forensics confirmed it's a single blow to the head.
Maybe there was an argument.
Sabri lost it, he's a big man.
He lashed out.
(Siobhan) He can't hide the body, so he makes it look like a race crime and incriminates McLeese with the sword.
(eerie music) ♪ (John) "It's harder to contend with oneself than with the world."
Oh, God.
He was trying to tell me what he was out to do.
(metal screeching) Oh, come on.
Okay, we'll walk.
-It's this way.
-Sabri did it?
(John) And then killed himself.
The paint's being analyzed, but there's no doubt.
(Gill) Well, I asked for a speed and I got it.

If this had dragged on, it could've turned very nasty.

We could now face accusations of being too efficient.
(John) Well, that's what happened.
(Gill) Yeah, I know, but Yurgi dies, we go after McLeese.
When we can't find him, hey, presto, it's not a race crime after all, it's immigrant kills immigrant?
(Siobhan) And then the one who did it kills himself.
(Gill) And that could be seen as convenient.
We have to find McLeese.
If he's with Merlinda, he has a perfect alibi.
(ominous music) (Si) How many times do I have to say it?
(John) You haven't seen Danny in weeks, uh-huh.
But you could get in touch with him if you want.
-It's in his interests.

I saw Danny about three weeks ago.

(grunting) (thudding) Sabri went for help, for Yurgi.
But McLeese was dead.
I'd killed him.
Sabri and Yurgi cleaned up as best they could.
(scrubbing) He kept the sword with my prints on it.
Said he'd expose me if I didn't get his family out of Whitemire.
Thought that a policeman could do anything.
There's no secrets in a place like that.
When Sabri found out about the blackmail, he was furious.
They argued.
Sabri lashed out.
And Yurgi died.
Merlinda, dead.
Yurgi and Sabri.
A young woman and two good men, destroyed.
And all because of that little... A young woman and three good men, I think.
