-[Vince] Origin story.
Let s hear the origin story.
(Mireya laughs) -[Mireya] Shae and I met through her music That was like, 20 years ago and that was before the band Then in 2008 I was like- Hey girl, do you want to do this band with me?
(Shae and Mireya laugh) -[Shae] Just like that.
[Singing in Spanish] They call me mezcalera Cause I sing all night long -[Mireya] We started playing in the subways We played in every condition, like you see videos of us on YouTube like with scarves and jackets and playing like this- (Mireya laughs) but we would go every week.
[Singing in Spanish] My love is deep down Mezcal kisses -[Anna] Even when we were playing on the subway, we would get like huge crowds.
People would just be like What s going on?
we d kind of get like, swarmed by a lot of people Even early on, you know, there was like a big impact [Singing in Spanish] Mezcal kisses Turns on my adrenaline -[Mireya] I come from a Mariachi background and even though I never thought I would do mariachi it was my first job in New York as a musician that experience of being one of the only female mariachis in New York City led to the idea of forming this group of all female mariachi It started as a collective of women coming together doing something in a safe space and freely with no boundaries.
(audience applauses) (slow melancholy music plays) [Singing in Spanish] Today I m lost in memory Suffering because you are far away from me I do not understand why you left I beg hevan to be able to live with this loneliness Where will you be?
Come back I can not anymore Wait so long And certain love So much illusion you leave in me You take everything Everything from my heart (mariachi music picks up speed) Where will you be?
Come back I can not anymore Wait so long And certain love So much illusion you leave in me (audience cheers) You take everything Everything from my heart (audience cheers) -[Shae] Mireya Ramos (audience cheers) [Singing in Spanish] What pretty eyes you have under those two eyebrows under those two eyebrows What pretty eyes you have -[Mireya] For a while we were not accepted by, especially by the mariachi community.
We were actually banned.
I mean, like, not officially banned but you know, like they would just not consider us a mariachi [Singing in Spanish] Malagueña -There was that resistence, there was a lot of criticism but that worked in our favor in the way that we paved our own path.
We made it our own We started playing in alternative venues that never had seen a mariachi and therefore we started putting together a lot of repertoire that was not traditional.
That really pushed us to create our own sound and our own unique genre really [Singing in Spanish] -of a rose (audience cheers) (mariachi music plays) -[Shae] Here we go!
To-lo-ache -[Audience] To-lo-ache (audience continues to clap along to the song) [Singing in Spanish] Sweet memories of love of that summer Tender looks and the sun smiled at me I melted in your arms thinking it would be forever Knowing that everything was an illusion Time passed like a wind caress There you and I were still lying to the heart Although all of us is now in the past But life is funny which brought us together tdoday I want, I want us to dance And in each movement, express our passion Only we have this moment because love left us behind -[Shae] Here we go!
To-lo-ache -[Audience] To-lo-ache!
(upbeat mariachi music continues) [Singing in English] No one fit me like you And no one ever will Though what we had fell through To you, my body is hostage still When I close my eyes, the way that you feel Is too good to be true.
That s how I know I m dreaming This can t be real.
Only hold me til the end of the song Cause baby if we kiss, all we ll do is go wrong.
We ve already been through this I ve got everything I needed from this one dance We weren t destined for each other This just happened by chance Just hold me, hold me for this moment As if you were the only, only one for me Dance me, dance me so sweetly then leave me Leave me Leave me, oh [Singing in Spanish] I want, I want us to dance and in each movement express our passion [Singing in English] Dance me, dance me so sweetly Then leave me, leave me, leave me, oh (audience applauses) -[Shae] That was the best audience participation we ve ever had on that song.
-[Shae] We are named after a flower that grows right here in Albuquerque s backyard and front yard.
It grows all over people s yards actually (band laughs) Toloache is a common flower that grows here.
It s used in love potions It s used for medicinal purposes and it s a moon flower so it opens at night and closes during the day, it s magical.
[Singing in English] Your love was never more than an illusion I thought belonged to me and to you I was a goal you saw At the bottom of At the bottom of the stream You were content knowing it was there And always, always will be As long as you can hold can hold for a second Before it slips free I can t blame you entirely I was well aware that she had a par of you to keep but you came and you try to force and you didn t let love take its course I can t give you my heart because I can t share yours I can t say you let me down any less than I Any less than I let you down.
I can t say you let me down Any less than I Any less than I Than I let you down Ooh [Singing in Spanish] Yours, a love of illusion That it wasn t, that it wasn t for me In the dark depths of the stream It was me, the golden light in the background It was your pleasure to know That there it stayed, that there it would stay You have to hold on when everything is going to slip away everything is going to slip away I don t blame you I knew well that she kept She is part of you But you went too far, you tried hard I can t give you my heart since yours can t be shared [Singing in English] I can t say you let me down any less than I, any less than I let you down I can t say you let me down any less than I any less than I let you down (upbeat mariachi music) Oohh I can t say you let me down any less than I any less than I let you down I can t say you let me down any less than I any less than I let you down (audience cheers) -[Elena] Shae Fiol everyone!
-[Shae] Thank you!
-[Ken] From busting to Latin Grammy winners.
Can we talk about from there to here?
We put together our first album with money from the subway, from gigs, We would pay for our studio little bits at a time and then once we put our album together and released our first album, we got a surprise nomination basically -[Mireya] Yeah, we couldn t believe it.
Nobody knew us outside of New York and then that obviously opened the doors [Singing in Spanish] The mezcalina rides in me -[Shae] Little by little with press and the album and with getting some higher profile gigs we started to really build.
(audience applause) -[Mireya] Alright, we ve got one more for you!
Ooh -[Mireya] Yes, come and dance with us!
[Singing in Spanish] They call me mezcalera cause I sing all night long Enchanting the strays until dawn I continue, I continue dancing with the beloved spirits I swear by a thousand agaves that my love is in the world Mezcal kisses, the mezcalina rises in me Mezcal kisses, turns on my adrenaline Mezcal kisses, the mezcalina rises in me Mezcal kisses, turns on my adrenaline Tiki-tiki-tiki ta-ta Tiki-tiki-tiki ta-ta Tiki-tiki-tiki ta-ta Tiki-tiki-tiki ta-ta -Keep in going!
[Singing in Spanish] Mescal kisses play with my love Seductive, curious Tiki Tiki Mescal kisses play with my love Give me a repasado kiss so we can warm up (upbeat mariachi) Mezcal kisses, turns on my adrenaline (upbeat mariachi) -[Mireya, in Spanish] Thank you so much!
