Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipColin: Welcome to Survivalists, the adventure show where families face nature's most extreme challenges together.
I'm your host, Colin O'Brady.
I'm a 10-time world record holder, best-selling author, and professional explorer.
Top of the world!
My passion for the outdoors helped me overcome the biggest challenges in my own life.
Ugh!
And with the support of my family, I have learned that the impossible is possible.
And now each week, I'll be using those life lessons to help mentor two families, each here with their own deeply personal reasons as they push themselves physically, mentally... - [emotionally] I can't do it.
[sobs] Colin: ...and emotionally.
They'll go on a three-day adventure of a lifetime... Woman 1: Let's go survivalists!
- Yes, girl!
Colin: ...where they'll compete for a $10,000 cash prize... [cheering] but their real reward comes when they begin to see loved ones in a new light, rebuild relationships... Girl 1: We made it!
Colin: ...and find new strength as a family.
Woman 2: This is testing everything, this is testing everybody.
Colin: This week, the Burrell family from Greenville, South Carolina... Man 1: We've never been challenged in an outdoor setting like this.
Colin: ...will face the DeVries family from Conroe, Texas.
- What you're gonna see at the end is all four of us with nothin' left in the tank.
Follow me!
Colin: Who will be the first to raise their family's flag and be this week's Survivalists?
[guitar chord] Burrells: We're the Burrell family from Greenville, South Carolina.
Girl 2: Where we are, we're not used to all these mountains.
I'm excited but also kind of nervous.
Girl 3: This is definitely outside our family comfort zone because we've never been camping.
[laughs] Man 1: Five, six, seven, eight!
All: Hi, we're the DeVries family from Conroe, Texas.
Man 1: I can't believe-- Woman 2: Well, look, Jacques' phone is ringing.
- You know what?
That was our slip-up.
That was our one, guys.
Woman 2: Okay.
Boy: [laughs] Jacques: Yeah, it's a pretty loud house.
Woman 2: But a lot of fun, so we don't take ourselves too seriously.
Colin: Yeah, DeVries family!
Fired up to be here.
Jacques: YES!
Come on!
Colin: Here they are, the Burrrells matchin' their energy, I love it!
Welcome to Survivalists!
Jacques: Yeah!
[families cheering] Colin: What do I need to know about the DeVries family?
- We're high energy, we've blended.
Two of us are kind of outdoorsy, and the new two are learning.
- I don't know, that was kind of a dig.
I'm pretty outdoorsy.
Jacques: Okay.
Nicola: Yeah, but no, I can hang, I can hang.
Colin: So talk to me about that.
You guys are a blended family now.
How has that been for you so far?
- It's been a little crazy.
Nicola: Jacques and I are recently married, and we are blending our families together.
This one's mine, he's my oldest, Calum.
Jacques has two, Kamren who's with us and then Alex, who's 20 and in college.
Colin: Kamren, for you, what's the experience of this new blended family been like?
Kamren: It's been a little bit of a struggle.
At first, I was not really excited about the whole blend.
It was definitely a transition for me, but if my dad likes her, I mean, I'll try to come around.
Heh.
- What I'm hoping for with Kamren is to build a bond, relate to her, be supportive and loving, and show her who I am.
- I actually come from a blended family myself, so I know what that process is, and I have to say, my stepparents have been some of the most important people in my life.
Nicola: Calum has trust issues because it wasn't so easy when I was a single mom.
I hope Calum finds trust and confidence and can see Jacques leading and say, I trust him.
Jacques: It's a great opportunity.
Not a lot of blended families get to do this.
Colin: Kamren, can you describe your family's flag and what it stands for?
Kamren: The rings represent us.
There's two of the same color, them are the same color, so we're like, coming together.
Jacques: The flag is there to remind us why we're doing this, 'cause I think at the end of it, we're just gonna be, you know, so much better off.
Colin: Burrell family, welcome to Survivalists.
Girl 2: Thank you!
Colin: What does it mean to have your two daughters out here doing this competition together?
Man 2: We've never camped before.
- Or backpacked.
Girl 3: Yeah.
- This will be our first time backpacking.
- Completely new.
Never camped, never backpacked.
- I know we're gonna encounter some tough times out here.
Girl 2: There might be some tears, some internal battles, but, uh, I know that we'll push through it.
- Kayla, how are you feeling about camping for the first time?
- I'm feeling excited, but also a little nervous.
When I was 14, I was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
When I was younger, we didn't know that I had autism, we just knew that I was really quiet, I was hesitant to talk to people, 'cause it doesn't come naturally.
I'll freeze up, won't be able to say anything.
- Kayla will, will sometimes doubt herself in certain settings.
Kristin: When Kayla goes off to take the next step in life, I want her to follow her dreams and have the confidence to know she can do everything she sets her mind to.
Colin: Kayla, would you tell me about your family's flag?
Kayla: The rainbow infinity symbol is what it's based on, which is the symbol for diversity on the autism spectrum.
The land and the water, we like to spend time at the lake, and that's important to our family.
I want to prove to people with autism spectrum disorder that you can learn new things, try new things, even if it's hard for you.
It's not all of who I am, but it's an important part of who I am.
Colin: You're competing against another family.
Clearly, they've got a little more experience with camping, it sounds like.
- I think we're the underdogs.
Kristin: [laughs] Colin: Of course, experience does help in the outdoors, but the things you're gonna be tested on are a lot of interpersonal dynamics.
It is goin' to be an incredible experience, I can tell you that.
You'll be going on a challenging, 3-day, 16-mile journey through an everchanging high desert.
Day One, you'll travel six miles, climbing over 1,000 feet in elevation, crossing rocks, sand, and cacti before heading down a steep canyon to camp for the night.
Day Two, you'll navigate four miles through a tricky desert before rappelling 50 feet down a sheer rock face to make your way to camp.
Day Three, you'll paddle six and a half miles down the frigid river, bushwhack through thick underbrush, and sprint to reach the finish line and be the first to raise your flag.
You guys wanna know what we're playin' for?
Kamren: Yes.
Families: Yeah.

Girl 3: Oh, yeah.

Jacques: Head back to your vessels and row, row, row.
- It's down this way.
- We get closer to the waypoint, we look and we can see this shore and there's Colin.
I see him.
Colin: Looks like the first boats are landing on the beach right there.
- That must be where we have to go.
We're gonna have to get out and run.
Colin: Come on, you guys!
You're almost there.
Kayla: And we give it everything we got.
Colin: Come on, you guys!
Eden: Run as fast as you can, sprint.
Calum: Jacques, we're still in this.
Nicola: Very much so.
Colin: Hey!
Eden: Hello.
Colin: Burrell family, you're the first to arrive at the finish line area, but you are not finished yet.
If you want to win Survivalists, you need to raise your flag.
Eden: All right.
Eric: We were all tired, exhausted, cold.
Colin: One last challenge to get across the finish line here, guys.
Eric: With this challenge, you never know when you're gonna have to go another leg.
Colin: The DeVries could be here any moment.
Nicola: [grunting with effort] Colin: See the other boats coming close up on the beach.
Kristin: Here we go, we got it guys.
Kayla: I came here wanting to help each other through all the challenges, and I think that happened.
Colin: Put it in the hole.
Kayla: We were there to celebrate with each other too.
Colin: Burrell family, you're the winner of Survivalists!
Congratulations!
Good job.
Eric: Good job, girls.
Colin: Well done.
Well done.
How was it being out here in this challenging environment with your family, Kayla?
Kayla: It showed that even though we might have challenges, we might think that we're at our breaking point, we can push through it as a family.
Colin: When you were telling me about the flag on the first day, about kind of what it represents, how has that kind of played out for you out here in the wilderness?
Kayla: Everyone, whether they have autism or not, everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses.
Uh, no matter what comes our way, we can tackle it.
It just shows that don't let others place limits on you, you know what you can do.
Trust yourself.
Kristin: Seeing Kayla rappel on the second day after almost not being able to get down the first day was incredibly gratifying because I knew that she had gained enough confidence in herself.
Kayla: It's good to have family there supporting you, getting you through it.
Colin: Absolutely, clearly what you've accomplished out here I think is extraordinary, and you've shown your strength and your fortitude.
Eric: Taking on new challenges is a way to test yourself, and even if there are setbacks, that's okay, we regroup, we bond together as a family and we charge forward again.
Colin: You guys earned this, Burrell family.
Open it up.
- We thought we were the underdogs, but it turns out we won.
[cheering] Ah, it's raining.
Woo!
Kamren: Come on, Dad!
You got this!
I could see their flag waving.
I was just like, whatever.
I'm still going.
Colin: Finish strong, you guys.
You're almost there.
Come on!
Kamren: I'm not giving up.
It would make me feel like, I don't know, just unaccomplished, even through all this if I didn't like run in, [emotional] and finish.
Colin: To say the least.
Kamren: And I feel like accomplishing the course today really just meant a lot to everyone.
Colin: There is one last challenge to finish this thing up.
I know you guys can do it.
Nicola: Yeah.
Colin: You gotta raise your flag up, all right?
Nicola: Yeah, let's do it.
Jacques: Yeah, my fingers are blue.
I'm hypothermic.
Colin: All right, putting it up in the ground, this is the last step.
Jacques: And this flag is going in the ground, and that's it.
We pushed that hard.
Colin: DeVries family, congratulations, you have finished Survivalists!
Jacques: Aaahh!
Colin: Congratulations!
You have made it to the end.
Nicola: Kamren and I's relationship is a real win.
We really have just become a lot closer.
- It's been fun to get to know her and her new personalities that I never see.
Colin: You guys came out here with a new family dynamic, part of building a new family and a blended family is building those new shared experiences that will last a lifetime.
Nicola: Yeah.
Colin: Kamren, what is it that you learned about your new members of your family that you didn't know before?
Kamren: They're tough, like they stuck through it with us, so... Callum: I mean, those last couple hours were brutal, and I just, I wanted to quit so many times, but I just kept going.
I really felt Jacque's love this week, just hanging out, bonding, our ups and downs.
Literally, like up and down.
- They've earned their spurs, for sure.
I'm truly blessed to have these guys and, uh, just super proud of 'em, they pushed, they did everything I asked, I can't ask anymore.
Nicola: I love you.
Colin: Congratulations, guys, you finished Survivalists.
You did an extraordinary job.
I'm proud of you.
Calum: This is definitely a week to remember.
