I WOULD LOOK AT IT THE MOST BECAUSE SUGAR IS BAD FOR THE BODY SO I WOULD LIKE TO REDUCE THAT IN THE THINGS I EAT.
>> ESPECIALLY NOW PEOPLE WANT TO EAT MORE HEALTHY AND I WOULD SAY THE ADDED SUGAR IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING THAT'S GOOD TO KNOW.
>> OTHER THAN THE PACKAGED ITEMS YOU MIGHT BE THINKING WHERE ELSE CAN I SEE THE NEW NUTRITION LABELS?
AND THE ANSWER IS THINGS LIKE MEATS AND PREPARED FOODS.
>> A LOT OF ITEMS THAT ARE THE PREPARED FOODS OR READY-TO-EAT FOODS DO HAVE NUTRITION PANELS ON THEM SO WE WILL HAVE TO MAKE THE CHANGES.
A LOT OF THE ITEMS TO HAVE THAT CHANGE BUT WE STILL HAVE WORK TO DO.
>> THE DECISION CAME IN 2016 AND THE HOPE WAS TO CHANGE PACKAGING BY 2018 BUT THE FDA ISSUED AN EXTENSION.
>> ANYTIME THERE IS A CHANGE OBVIOUSLY THAT WILL TAKE A LOT OF TIME.
THE NUTRITION PANEL THAT CAME OUT IN THE MID-90s HAS ALREADY UNDERGONE A LOT OF CHANGE AND WE HAVE SEEN COUNTRY OF ORIGIN ADDED TO THE LABELING.
WE HAVE SEEN CHANGES WHEN IT COMES TO MEAT PACKAGING.
>> AS OF JANUARY 1 OF THIS YEAR MANUFACTURERS WITH $10 MILLION OR MORE IN ANNUAL FOOD SALES ARE SUPPOSED TO COMPLY AND FOR SMALLER THE DEADLINE IS 2021.
SMALLER THE DEADLINE IS 2021.
AND THOSE WITH SINGLE INGREDIENT SUGARS HAVE UNTIL JULY 1, 2021.
>> WE HAVE UNTIL ANOTHER TWO OR THREE YEARS BEFORE THIS IS FULLY IMPLEMENTED AND YOU WILL SEE IT ON EVERY PACKAGE.
>> IN ADDITION THE FDA IS REQUIRING MORE NUTRIENTS BE PRESENT SUCH AS IRON, VITAMIN D AND POTASSIUM WHICH SHE BELIEVES WILL HELP IN IMPROVED LIFESTYLE AND FOOD CHOICES.
>> THE NUTRIENTS ARE PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERN.
