Mr. Daniels began his N&O tenure working in several departments of the paper and learning the trends of technology and circulation as well as journalistic practice. By the time his father, Frank Daniels, retired from the newspaper in 1986, his son was prepared to succeed him, as publisher of the Raleigh News & Observer.
