Go from that boat, to this boat, to that island.
Today we're leaving the historic David B, our home away from home and exploring Sucia Island in the San Juans in search of nature, scenery and history.
We're going fossil hunting.
Land ho!
Let's explore.
I've taken six steps and I've already found my first treasure.
If you like beachcombing, you're going to love this adventure.
I'm here with Christine, founder of Northwest Navigation.
Where are we?
We're on Sucia Island, and we came from right here on the David B.
We skipped over to this spot right here, and now we're going to take a little hike over to Fossil Bay, and maybe we'll get to see some fossils.
Awesome.
Game on.
Let's go.
Yeah.
How much longer ‘til we get to Fossil Bay?
Oh, just two more quick cuts.
Nice.
We just hit the beach and we found one already.
Christine, tell me what we've got.
Oh, if you look right down here, you can see, like a, clam shell or something that, is, about 80 million years old.
Wow.
Crazy.
80 million.
Doesn't look a day over .. We've found even more treasure.
Christine, what are we looking at here?
Yeah.
If you.. And then over here, these little nodules look like you can see where the shell had been.
And and kind of weathered away here and here.
And maybe that, you know, was a fossilized version of the inside of whatever mollusk that had been.
Oh, my gosh.
So cool.
I can't wait to learn more about Sucia.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Let's go.
Behold our greatest fossil discovery.
The petrified La-Z-Boy.
Christine, can you tell me more about Sucia?
Yeah.
Sucia was .. and it got its name, I think, from the Spanish, when they were out exploring.
I think during the time that it was a rock quarry.
There were maybe about 2000 people living out here.
And I know doesn’t that seem amazing.
And, now, other than the Rangers, it's uninhabited.
Several decades ago, I don't remember exactly when it was the, yacht clubs in the Puget Sound area all got together when the island came up for sale, and they purchased it.
And my understanding is that they then donated it to the state of Washington to be a marine park.
Wow, that is so cool.
Yeah.
Amazing.
Well, this is Sucia.
I am Angela.
This is the lovely Christine of Northwest Navigation.
Thank you for joining us and exploring.
I'll see you.
