Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipGeorgia Public Broadcasting presents the Georgia High School Association's state basketball championships.
Major funding for this program is made possible in part by Georgia's Electric Membership Corporation's IBEW Local 613 Atlanta.
What Coby State Farm drives and by viewers like you.
Live from the Macon Coliseum in Macon, Georgia, is the class single state championship the warriors of south with Christian against the Red devils of Randolph playing.
Good afternoon, everybody, and welcome to Make it.
I'm John Wilkerson, along with Phil Hansen.
We got a rare treat of two defending state champions facing off in this title game.
And Phil Hansen.
Southwest Atlanta Christian had a significant talent drain last year, including in the top pick in the NBA draft, Dwight Howard.
But they're back in this title game.
Well, that's one because they're a program.
They're not just based on one player.
And Coach Brooks does an outstanding job with his club.
And let's tell you about Javaris Crittenton, the point guard.
This guy can fill up the basket.
He's one of the top juniors in the country.
So keep your eye on him.
He's going to be one of the highest recruited players in the country down the stretch.
Experience is the key for southwest Atlanta Christian.
Let's take a look at the starting lineup.
So we took a look at Javaris Crittenton stats, Eric Javaris Crittenton, Darryl Slack, a couple of experienced guards, Gary Cage, Hazel Howard, who is Dwight's younger brother, and James Hickson.
Now let's tell you about Randolph Klay.
This is a team that can get up and down the floor.
Johansson Excellent pressure there.
Going to man to man pressure you the whole game.
So they may come right through the TV at you And they have a significant player, too.
As you take a look at Courtney Brooks, the Southwest Atlanta Christian head coach, six years and a 71% winning percentage.
That is excellent.
Now, let's tell you about Randolph Clay and there's the man we want to look at.
There is Charmaine Dukes.
I love this kid.
He has unlimited range, can run the point, can run the two can run the three, He can shoot the ball coming off the bus.
And let's tell you about their starting lineups.
Eric Thomas and Charmaine Dukes are your guards were shot.
Rashard Lewis, Lindsey Cannon, Martavis Allen, Cannon and Lewis will be significant on the offensive boards.
And let's tell you about the Randolph Clay head coach because he's been around for a long time and there he is, Randolph Clay, already 58 straight wins.
And as you take a look at their head coach, he operates under the tent.
Joseph Williams.
All right.
Let's hear from Eddie Ashley with the starting lineup.
Today's game, we have Southwest Atlanta Christian with a record of 23 wins, seven losses.
Dressed in Burgundy as your visitors on the scoreboard and Randolph played with that perfect 27 and zero dressed in white as your home team.
Now have your attention for the starting lineup.
First for Southwest Atlanta Christian at forward number 13, a six foot two senior Gary Kane at forward number 24 six foot five, sophomore Josh Hussey.
Oh, Howard at center number 42, a six foot eight.
Sophomore Jay Dixon at guard number three, a six foot senior.
Darrel Sly at guard number one, a six foot five Junior Javaris Crittenton and Southwestern Minor Christian's head coach Courtney Brooks.
And now for Randolph Play at forward number 13, a six foot one junior Martavis Allen at forward number 46 foot four senior Let's see him on at center number 40 for a six foot four junior Rashard Lewis at guard number 25 foot eight junior Eric Thomas at guard number 21, a six foot two Senior Sammy Dukes and Randolph plays head coach Joseph Williams, two defending state champions.
Get ready to square it off with a single state title.
We're back after this game.
And welcome back to the Macon Coliseum in Macon, Georgia.
We get set for the state class single state championship.
Let's go down the courtside to Scott Kozlowski.
Well, John, I just had a chance to talk to both coaches right before the game to ask them what they were stressing to their teams.
I talked to Coach Courtney Brooks.
He told me that they needed to beat the press.
In fact, they need to pass out of it, try to set up their half court game.
Then I talked to Joseph Williams.
He distressed defense, defense, defense.
He said if his team plays hard, especially on defense, they're going to win back to Georgia.
Defense is the key in this one.
Defense wins championships, John, at any level.
Southwest Atlanta Christian is a defending single, a state championship.
This is how they got here to this point.
Defeating Washington Wilkes, a close one with Jefferson Whitfield Academy, who they met in the title game the last two years, got by them easily and then Terrell County last Wednesday in the semifinal, Joseph Williams in his 42nd year.
And this is how Randolph Clay got here.
Significant that they've averaged in their victories over 35 points.
In fact, throughout the entire regular season, their average margin of victory has been around the 50 point margin.
So this is a talented team.
All the way down from Cuthbert, Georgia, as we get ready to get this one underway.
And we are underway from the Macon Coliseum.
And Charmaine Dukes tries to pass it inside WHISTLE and I'll go to southwest Atlanta Christian as Duke's threw it out of bounds.
Here's the pressure we were talking about.
Randolph play is going to employ this all day long significant back court pressure and Southwest line Christian able to break the time line that they'll slack with the basketball A relentless man to man defense by Randolph play and Jahvaris Quintin is the man you want him to have handle the ball he'll put it up.
No it won't fall foul for the boards and it's out of bounds.
And I'll stay with the Warriors.
I love the way Randolph Clay goes to the glass.
Lewis and Keenan are jumping jacks.
They're going to attack the board at every shot knowing that the positioning they get inside as well.
Southwest Atlantic Christian, the inbounds James Hickson receives a pass in trouble, gets it away to Darryl Slack, who's a calming presence on this warrior offense.
Hickson is fouled inside by Martavis Allen.
It'll be his first just to turn around and Hickson will go the free throw line.
Hickson has got to get that ball instead of putting it on the floor turn and faced.
He puts it on the floor here tonight.
It's going back to the way Randolph plays guards are so quick doubling down on the ball makes the first one and six in a 72% free throw shooting.
Both these teams are very explosive, athletic and very well balanced.
They have great versatility.
So two for Hickson and two quick to nothing lead for South Carolina of course a 2 to 1 press after they made free throw continuous Allen drive here puts up a shot off the rim no good there with the rebound there's Thomas and there's Kane and inside there's an app that Lyndon rebounds by Randolph play and the foul boy is Rashard Lewis active on those offensive boards.
What I really like about him he's tall he's about six six foot he plays about six nine with his arms very long and now blocking out.
You've got to get inside your man.
Stay between your man in the basket for Coleman, Derrick Lewis misses the first free throw the 57% free throw shooting on that one.
Here's your man to man.
Pressure.
And the key is not to dribble too much and get in the hands of number one great pass layup not good by Gary Cage and here's Lewis with the rebound I like the way though that the Warriors attack that pressure you want to go right at it tech people in there pressing Eric Thomas find Martavis Allen inside the Lincecum and the kid has to change his shot It's out of bounds and it goes off for Atlanta Christian nice play by Dixon Keenan can't worry about the block he's got to take the ball to the shot blockers chest There's front now they're fronting the southwest Atlanta Christian guards on the inbound Darrell Slack in the back court as far as Crittenton brings it up the floor finds John Howard, the long jumper here ball and go to the backside, fend off, play some aim down to pull up and hit.
I love the way this kid through today in a program I would come and get him the minute I took the job Charmaine Dukes and we mentioned we watched him on Wednesday night.
Boy, he had the sweetest stroke out here on the floor and he's a big time of year.
Hickson has stripped and fouled and he'll go to the line.
I really like the coach Courtney Brooks is doing now for Southwest Atlanta Christian against the press.
Look at this.
He got great shot.
Preparation shot preparation is all due to your footwork.
He's got great feet step with his inside foot and brought his back leg up through it.
Excellent, excellent job back to the press.
What they've done now with Javaris Crittenton inbounding the ball.
Now he becomes a secondary receiver, so he's not having to withstand the first initial trap by Randolph play.
He's a no go by Hickson.
He was 72% free throw shooter.
That a real nice job of getting Tobias the ball in open space Cornelius Price checks in the game for Randolph play Nixons had some big shoes to fill in the post that of Dwight Howard and he's done an admirable job for you Brooks couldn't and had nothing but great compliments of what Hickson has provided for this team and the young kid, one of two from the free throw line for Hickson gets pressure.
You got to keep your dribble alive.
You never want to pick it up inside.
This is Lewis with a shot.
It won't go rebound inside by Allen.
Some people have a nose for the ball John and Cannon has a great feeling for the ball.
Isaac does a nice job of getting his body directly underneath it.
On the rebound quickly here south with the line Christian Slack shot no good and a rebound by Randolph Clay battle for the board Cornelius Price had it He's come for walks as he fell down in the scrum but Cornelius can't bring that ball down.
He had it in great shape.
Superb job.
So you never stop playing right there.
You got to go straight back up there and finish substitution.
Now for a win, the game itself was to win a Christian.
A senior Justin Prothro checks in like a screen for the screener here slack inside intercepted by Lewis Swain Dukes are bringing up the ball up the floor.
He's a pure point guard according to coach when they look at that pass inside the cannon no good and Hickson comes on it the rebound for southwest Atlanta Christian Dixon's all for two shots already in this game just by sheer presence on the floor.
Crittendon inside to Hickson can't handle the pass a turnover by Southwest Atlanta Christian.
You always want a bounce pass into the post air pass out, Beat those big guys with the bounce pass There's price gouging Hickson Not there but follow so he didn't open take that one.
He just looked straight back up.
He didn't try to adjust the shot.
He went right back in the picks his chest against the shot blocker 7 to 2 Randolph play leave throw throw.
One thing about southwest Atlanta Christian they are experienced and then this is a third straight title game Last year they traveled a lot on the road here Ball by Crittendon and here comes Randolph play let's see Cannon can't hit it but down the follow is Louis and he's fouled but their slack the point guard has got to get back on defense if Crittendon takes the ball into the lane for a layup because any missed lay up and the point guard doesn't rotate back is going to be reduced to a layup on the other end of the floor shot Lewis 64 Jr 57% free throw shooter can hit the first one Well Randolph play normally what their motive is in the first quarter is get a huge lead and make the other team work as hard as they can to get back and cut the deficit.
But this very good job so far being competitive inside pass intended for James Hickson goes out of bounds.
Another southwest Atlanta Christian turnover.
Everyone's going to say, well, the press didn't get the trap there, but it produced exactly what Coach Williams wanted.
You came down, you got him to throw it away right off the bat without him.
Get the shot off.
Excellent job by Randolph.
But Duke's driving inside.
Hickson blocks it inside.
Thomas.
He has it stripped.
Now here's shot good by Cornelius Price.
And price has been a spark off the bench in the first quarter and timeout by selfless Atlanta Pistons as the Warriors are down by 810 to 2.
And we're seeing that pressure, not only the pressure but the interior game of Randolph play to take precedence here.
I like the way Randolph Clay is taking it to the basket.
They're attacking every time they get the ball.
Great timeout, though, by southwest Atlanta Christian Courtney Brooks, you don't want to get this lead out too far.
Plus, you just want to show that your team does know he's not real happy now with all the offensive penetration into the lane against his defense, Courtney Brooks, sixth year at Southwest Aligned Christian has a state championship under his belt, a third straight trip to the title game for the Warriors.
For his last two years.
They met their regional rival Whitfield Academy.
This year.
It's kind of nice for them not to see a regional rival in the title games.
You take a look at.
Joseph Williams is his 26th year Randolph Clay.
Before that, the schools merged.
In 1980.
He was the head coach at Clay County High School, won a state title there as well.
Randolph Clay now in a ten nothing run.
And Tobias Kriteman brings up the floor, Nancy Dixon, who can hit the Jumper offensive rebound by freshman the followers.
Good by James Hickson.
You got to block out.
Great job by the Warriors to stay tough on the glass Long Jumper No Good by Randolph Clay Rebound by Thomas Thomas inside the Louis Louis can't hit but there is Lindsey Cannon He's got great great hands through a big guy really catch it don't really like about him as a competitor he keeps the ball above his head 12 for Randolph play and Pittman ran in to Cornelius Price.
I just place that tag at the foul.
Oh my goodness.
I thought he was there.
I really like this here.
See if he got there.
I thought he might have been there.
May have leaned just a bit with the upper body, but those deeper said, you got to take that charge with the chest down.
Slack crosses the time line for southwest Atlanta Christian high screen and roll on the top of the key, trying to force a pass and then knocked away and another foul that and then a Christian likes to run that high screen and roll with Slack and Hickson at the top of the key and it come up to get the ducks in the Crittendon post it up Eric Thomas call on the foul quick shot by slack not there Hickson battling for the board the point out of bounds by Slack and now those one handed passes I get you killed meant to hit the passes you can't bring the ball back at the defense adjusted one hand enough play with the basketball Eric Thomas 122 zone by the way inside Louis putting the shot it's not good battle for the rebound Oh Bryce was battling with Hickson and I'll stay with and I'll play substitution in for Randolph play lob rush shot he can elevate he's a dummy dude.
He is such a complete player.
Great chance to really shoot it to handle it runs well at first it makes the pressure to reach him foul And Eric Thomas, I would hate to see that it is great to see fouls 40 feet from the basket because he's not really going to purchase that far away.
And if he does, it's going to be a long night anyway.
Just keep him in front of you right?
So Williams out, so sure about the call but all the is he's been coaching if I've seen it all here's coming off the out of bounds play straight up you cannot you got to see ball ball in man don't turn your head Danny friend in the ball game with the 22% whatsoever Christian Ellington in the ballgame also for Randolph place pressure of a two in the range he's been in these wars before friend passed in the Crittendon draws the foul on Billy Smith nice offensive set by the Warriors It's a little bit of a version of the flex going to have a cross screen and a downstream away from the ball but the offside guy cutting through then they're going to post Crittenton on the ball side block super job at the line explosive play a very good first step 65% free throw shooting for Crittenton Jesus favorite basketball player still was floored and his Magic Johnson he's maybe a little little kid that when he retired it's a good one to look up to he could really play.
He's got many videotapes and then just watch because he was a big guard as well.
And those moves by.
Oh, yes.
Oh, oh.
Can he play in the big time atmosphere and here's Kriteman quickly and stripped but there is hex it looks it's had a nice ball game so far but this temple favors Randolph play Janine Gooch lays it down with the Red Devils interior pass intended for Billy Smith Nice change out of moments there by South this administration with a131 zone It's a great one on one move but where you got to have some help side there where is the help side But what a fantastic finish all great point guards must finish foul on it down Slack loses control of the ball and the ball back to the red Devils that make the short pass Don't make that long pass over two or three people in the trap.
1 to 1 trap.
Duke's.
He can be filled up from there.
Not this time.
And Charlotte comes away with the rebound long Eric pass the cretin it passes it back to Hickson for the dunk That's a keeper There's a gigantic thing about the dunk but that was a great great pass by Jamal and the call got let the man come down there Slack will be calling the foul Take a look at the dunk by James Hickson from Ellington.
He was nice to penetration though 16 to 9 our score we're just underway from making calls seeing two defending state champions going at each other Randolph play 128 last year single-A champions Southwest Atlantic Christian looking to repeat Tobias Crittendon penetrating and the block and he's foul Nancy Canning super move and that was all set up on the press offense with Crittendon inbounding the ball let's he passes it the slack he's able to get it back up the second pass and now he can take it off to the races Superb job taking it to the basket.
Kept his head up the whole time, watching his target.
3 minutes.
The first down here, 6 to 10 Randolph play.
There's one problem with sometimes when you have one superstar, the rest of the guys tend to stand around and watch him do his thing.
You got to be a little bit more ball movement, man movement from South Jersey.
ID put there by Morris Crittendon, 16 to 11 Randolph play his deal by Faulkner will take it all the way kid again thinks he can't follow Oh you got to finish there and here a chance And look at that wonderful pass 18 to 11 Randolph play another steal and he is into the time That's Burlington.
Oh that press is getting to the Warriors.
You've got to come to the basket.
Wait for the pass.
Here's Crittendon foul by Rashard Lewis.
Oh, you never want if you going to foul him again, don't let his hands get above his shoulders.
Now he's got a chance to make the three point play if in the morning or definitely two at the line number a minute to go in the first quarter.
Oh, how far is Quentin in at the line?
It's the first tempo and there are going to be a key in this game.
Yeah, both teams playing 6 to 7 kids.
You can't have silly fouls 40 feet from the basket Rodriguez fouled and guys 24 lane It's a pair here 35 seconds here in the first quarter it's Charmaine Dukes They'll start throwing him Cross-court pass the price from his side kick it and can kick it But there the follow is Dexter Ellington and stop the ball his credit from the elbow Great rebound five fives something Duke's foul no basket on the floor the tempo now John is exactly rhythm play once they went in quick shot down on the end with surface and then a Christian that allows him to run down and score off the defensive pressure Southwest Atlanta Christians playing a little bit back on their heels and Randolph plays take it right out of it.
This point in the game.
Charmaine Dukes looking on the job by long jumper by not playing.
We've come to the end of the first quarter ragged first quarter back that favored Randolph play 22 to 30.
You take a look at southwest Atlantic Christian the defending when they state championship second quarter coming up and welcome back to the Macon Coliseum 22 to 13 Randolph play leads as we start the second quarter and boy Randolph play are they playing their game in the first quarter or what.
Well this tempo is perfect for them.
They're Macon south west Atlanta Christian take quick shots even though that there sometimes are good shots but they're off a quick which are producing long rebounds or click rebounds, which is in turn they take that ball back the other way with their offensive transition and they're converting on the offensive end.
I mean, Duke's Cornelius Price and Lindsey Cannon, all with six points so far for Randolph play Great balance.
James Hickson with eight for Southwest Atlanta, Christian Javaris Crittendon with five.
And what does that Randolph play?
Press remind you like minds me of Arkansas back in their heyday.
I mean it just keeps coming at your Vegas back in the early nineties when they used to clamp down on it.
The one thing I really like about Randolph players, they're very long and the athletic I mean they can come out and they can they really extend you three of 14 shooting for the Warriors in the first quarter 1022 for Randolph Craig Danny Swing with it and to high heel Howard with five inside It's like Louis Howard's coming against good energy to a rebound takes it right to the basket strong They may have got there late and you take a charge now you took the chin, take it with your chest and you hit Don't put your hands back.
Eisenhower, the younger brother, Dwight Howard, 60 to 63% field goal shooter.
What Cody Price likes about a high zone It's similar to his brother Dwight is that they both have a nose for rebounding makes a pair a stroke Eric Thomas with the ball for Randolph play Silas in the transition trying to extend that defense but there's a turnover Hickson that pays stay with Randolph play it throw that ball too many people you've got to bring the ball below the foul line extended it get that bounce pass in the post that was deuce oh we're going to change a shot.
But this time he's behind the glass and seven on the glass.
First.
He can't teach length.
John Cougar Long Defensively he makes up for a lot of those.
Brendan brings up the floor quickly breaking that threat so he's fouled reach it by Thomas he's so tough in the open floor.
Those blitzes did a nice job of putting him in position where he can be successful.
He's hard to press when you have your Miss Ball handler giving him basically at the foul line and he's off to the races.
Game three inches all day long in that situation.
That's the first foul on Thomas.
As far as Crittenton hits the line, you have to sit down.
Dexter Ellington will come in from West and Christian now ten of 13 from the free throw line so they're hitting the free throw.
That's where they're making all their their bones right here in 2 to 4 is cutting 30 to 17.
It's seven minute mark in the second quarter was Duke's.
They'll pick up that timber Nice pass Ellington inside the Louis not there rebound by Allen that won't go a thon opportunity sticks around and brings it up and shoving Duke's can hit and here's Hickson with the rebound so four clean opportunities there for Randolph play all over over they'll get another opportunity on the warrior turnover the guards have got to come back and get that ball.
You always let your guards come back below the big man shoulders.
He gets the rebound, turns to the outside, the guard comes below his shoulder.
Then the break starts.
Our defense Here's Ellington cutting off the glass no good.
Another rebound SWAT away by Hickson and now Southwest Atlanta Christian with the break That whole series was started by James Hickson.
He altered the shot on the defensive end, ran the floor and the offensive end, which created the scoring opportunity for very high, as you heard.
We'll go to the line.
Tobias Allen picks up his third for Southwest here for Randolph players.
Howard hits the free throw and you see some fouls racked up now for Randolph play Mitchell in now for Randolph play coming up from the punch Mario Mitchell Jr checks in six foot two for Howard but there's a rebound by southwest Atlanta Christian Tobias crippling warriors now showing some patience right here and those comes good ball and man movement inside guard hit he's got the straight after that late shot no good he got his hands out the carry came out southwest they loaded Christian big active in the fourth Dixon they are really playing above the rim I like the way southwest Indiana Christian came out the second quarter here for these 2 minutes they dominated the game four point lead for the Red Devils and Duke's goes to the hands of Mario Mitchell and out finds himself Christians in the middle now starting to go a little bit toward the warriors Exactly Southwest Atlanta Christian to nice job of trapping Randolph play in the corners where they can use the sideline in the halfcourt line as defender.
One man that can become three or two can become four when he goes price number 33 checks in for the red Devils as your Howard with the Tobias Christian he goes as fast and hits in foul and one that's what I'm talking about John you can't let him get the ball by the shoulders if you're going to foul him.
But the what adjustment I've seen the Southwest administration has made is the fact that they're allowing Jabari Strickland to be the second receiver against the press on the tramp.
Great pass like a bounce pass into the post but was a good catch Nancy Cannon commits his first attempted foul roam off play can't make the free throw this problem with the rebound two in a row that's happened now like Williams that could be happy with that bounce pass and he gets away and he goes to the Red Devils Tremaine Dukes runs the fastbreak.
He'll take it all the way.
This time he's tough at the break up about a straight to pull that shot off of this call on the side.
That's a slap.
Those very stars deceptively strong hang it hung in the air and knocked down big time, shot.
Put Jimmy Johnson in those numbers.
He's a star with the free throw.
This allows them to slide, press up by Point Randolph to lead.
And he friend doesn't knock out of his hand.
He's got to come to the ball really strong.
He can't wait to against speed skills at any level at six in there he cage up from the back court now finds Crittendon Well the chess match you look at that pass to Hickson but he wasn't ready for it.
That's got to be out of bounds.
And that's a hard pass to catch.
And another turnover.
They'll start first in line at first, down by 5 to 10.
So far for the Warriors here, another power turnover in the play with the pass is too tough.
Lance Kennedy has got a great chess match going here, 22 extended ten quick turn over there on the flip side, feed off players, not allowing them to get the ball back.
Once he inbounds the ball right there, he got it trending quickly up the floor behind the back, thought about the shot now fly in and score.
So he had 94 feet with the ball that can hit the three point lead something Duke's here trying to counter in a blocking foul ball on Hickson Courtney Brooks the little dance there.
He didn't think so.
Well the only thing is he may have got the contact and with the low on the first marker, if that happens, they're going to call the block every time you say this.
Just a great individual move there by Crittendon.
He can score.
He's a very explosive score and a great first step.
Charmaine Duke's had 66% free press room.
This is the first time he had 31 points in the semifinals.
You can talk central shots, too short for him.
Estimates range when he sits anywhere on the floor.
I bet.
I believe them after the semifinal games range is when he leaves his house.
Turnover in the backcourt.
Hickson gets it back in Numbers aren't that incredible.
Compton can't hit just in front row, grabs the loose ball.
But Crittendon trying to do it all fires up in here.
Ball But they underneath it just in front row you to get inside on those block out responsibilities I'm sorry Gary Cage underneath extending that fourth shot.
No good Lewis with the rebound he finds Deuce deuce get him But there's more down and he's fouled inside.
He just can't bring that ball down as long as he's got to go straight back up, come right back and go bring that ball down.
Shin High above and going to Right Louis will go on 57% through his favorite player is Tim Duncan and the Spurs another set here he is their team defensive stoppers there's Dexter Ellington checking in That's good Scott comes in for South facility Christopher this is too but then the rebound his price he can't hit he's blocking Louis at the free throw killing everybody in Got that box out you've got the numbers three point lead here in the four minute mile Crittendon does an out here flashing inside scoring three huge on the back on the baseline excellent cut by page never stood still kept moving the young man goes to double team he cut to the front of him going to the lane It's a one point lead for Randolph play and a turnover Southwest Atlantic Christian off the floor shot up by front row not battle for the forward He comes to end off play out of bounds to the warriors as Simeon zooms that crowd he's handling it in back for first It doesn't help when John Howard is harassing you.
Teams that characteristically like the press, don't like to be pressed, which we're seeing here.
Southwest Atlanta Christian has turned up the pressure in the halfcourt set.
It's a great pass, but I suppose there's front row and he hits from the paint.
It's a one point Red Devil League shame.
Duke's Lose the Match matchup.
I like Duke's and Crittendon.
That's good That's that's after missing right there.
Cornelius tries to do it, but it shows the Red Devils up by one trading baskets in the three minute mark here in the second quarter fires drill and he loves to drive with that jump stop.
And Tobias Pittman is starting to heat up.
You've got to get your help side principles there if he gets below the foul line extended, you got to be on the ball side of the floor and he commits the foul on Shameen deuce.
Oh, great.
Jump, stop, move, dribble, step, hop up.
He goes.
Jahvaris couldn't.
As we mentioned earlier, his favorite player is Magic Johnson.
He studies tape of magic because like him, he was a tall point guard.
I don't think magic had that hop.
Stop move.
Oh, you get Worthing three.
He needed.
He didn't need it.
Shimane thinks it's the free throw Shooting death is going to be a key to this ballgame.
Harden is fast.
He's.
Everybody's playing.
Look, we've got to keep our eye on the foul situation throughout the ballgame.
One point Red Devil lead to how does it go Howard inside shot good by Danny French.
This is a fun game to watch.
That's a tough shot right there.
It's semantics.
He's looking for his shot pass.
He's at the cannon and Cannon's down inside.
But I really like that Duke's did on that play.
He drew two defenders and then hit the open man.
Great foot vision.
You want your point guard to do this one.
Free scoring opportunities for your teammates who run the club offensively.
Score the defensive end of the floor.
Killed him on his point guard.
Last but not least score how you feel Howard tagging the foul his second It's Kim four big guys guy Nice stroke on the free throw line shoot 70% I love this kid He plays so hard.
His favorite player is Tracy McGrady and he hit the pair.
Murray Jones checked in himself for Southwest Atlanta Christian.
He's a senior.
He's been through the man to man defense now for Randolph.
But near the two minute Mark Crittendon looking to drive double screen watch the lob Crittendon deep from the open look he can't hit foul for the rebound ends up in the hands of Crittendon on the floor loses it now stuck inside three of and go to three second call on South Atlanta Christian's Danny friend is playing in the lane a little too long What I'm seeing now in the rebound into the fourth both teams both teams aren't finding the man.
They're just jumping up to go get the ball.
Whoever's got the fastest gun in the west is going to get it.
You got to find your man.
Establish contact.
Forward to that.
Hold that contact and then go get the basketball.
You must put a body on somebody when you rebound.
Here's Wallace inside Job getting the ball but his head super job three point lead for the red Devils minute 32 to go until halftime Crittendon ante what a match up he'll throw drive He can't hit four and rebound by Nancy Cannon Charmaine Duke's double team Trapp Finds Ellington Ellington Back to Duke's.
And here's Duke's driving scoop and he gets it got get some help sat there The little Christian is going to try to gamble in the corners with the traps under a minute.
Crittendon and steal by Duke's, with Pittman trailing him, he can't hit the layup.
I think he felt Pittman's presence behind him.
Cannon will put up the shot.
It won't go.
Louis, with that big rebound, puts it on the floor.
Boy, he's having at least five today.
He is a warrior to him.
Rishard Lewis gets the basket and the foul and the fans from Cuthbert love it.
The play that preceded that one.
But Duke's picked him off.
Picked off, and it's a trap for the ball Whenever you're going down the floor and there's a bigger man chasing you from behind, use the rim to block his hand.
You keep your body between him, it use the rim to block his hand.
Reverse layup 3930, 40, 32.
If you take a look quickly at the replay I love Louis.
He is so tough man to man defense again like Christian my personality playing for the last shot if I'm too down screen I know run already for the Randolph play Red devils under ten Crittendon you want the ball in his hands not there this time and Lee came in with the rebound Great love play that got a shot off before the buzzer It's Duke's got this time and we've come to the end of the first.
It's been a good chess game throughout, but so far it's Randolph play holding off the defending one eight state champion southwest Atlanta Christian 40 a 32 here at to make it coliseum Here's your score look forward to the second half here the Macon Coliseum southwest Atlanta Christian nine of 12 from the free throw line that's been the key for them for 4232 our score and Scott Klosowski is standing by Coach, how do you assess your team's play here the first half and what are you going to tell them in the locker room?
Well, we've been very pretty good.
The first half that we're getting, the foul throws about three feet of the foul ball.
But we're going to tell them to keep going with the door.
And that's the plan.
So tough defense enough to go for BELL.
All right.
Best of luck in the second half.
Thanks, John, back to you.
Thank you, Scott.
Oh, 40 to 32 right now.
Play at them activities when we come back from Macon.
And welcome back to the Macon Coliseum here in Macon, Georgia.
At halftime.
Randolph Play has the lead 4232 over Atlanta Christian welcome back everybody I'm Jim I'm halftime festivities roll on and we find our Scott Kozlowski hanging out in the principal's office again hello Scott.
Thanks a lot, Jim.
But to my left, this is Lee Byrd.
He's the principal at Randolph Clay High School.
And then to my right, this is Geraldine Thompson.
She is the principal at Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy.
But first to you, Lee.
How do you assess the first half of play that we've seen so far?
Well, it's been a very interesting first half.
The teams are very evenly matched and look for a close, but hopefully we'll get victory number 621 for Randolph Blake.
A lot of people may not know where Randolph Clay is.
Tell me a little bit about your school and where you're located.
Okay.
Our Randolph players are by county school.
We serve kids from Randolph County as well as Clay County.
We have kids live as far apart as maybe 50 miles.
The school is located about 55 miles south of Columbus and about 42 miles west of Albany, Georgia.
Tell me a little bit about your coach.
He's got a storied history, his coach for 40 years.
It's incredible.
Okay.
Coach Winslow, as a young 70 year old, he's coached 26 years at Randolph County High School.
His coach a total of 44 years, and he's won 930 plus games.
Thank you very much.
Let's go over to Principal Thompson.
You've been here before.
You told me you won this last year.
How does it feel to be back again this year?
We're extremely excited to be back this year and we expect that we're going to win again.
How will you celebrate if you do win it again?
We'll take everybody out to eat.
Well, tell me a little bit about your school and what's special about it.
Our school was founded about 19 years ago and it's a Christian academy.
We do everything by faith and we're extremely blessed to have a coach who is young but who really believes that he can do anything.
And the students believe the same thing.
We are a college preparatory school.
We have students who come from all over the metropolitan Atlanta area, from as far south as Hampton, from as far east as Snellville and near Temple, Georgia, as well.
Well, we look forward to a great second half.
Good luck to you both.
Back to you, Jim.
I thank you, Scott.
It's going to be a great second half indeed.
Let's go courtside now.
John Wilkerson, Phil Henson.
All right.
Thank you, Jim.
Thank you.
And I'll tell you, Phil, let's talk about this game because.
You talked about an excellent chess match and we've seen excellent examples of that.
I think it gets the press in itself.
I think Southwest Atlanta, Christian against Randolph Place pressure is allowed Javaris Crittenton to be the second receiver.
They throw it to Shaq and then they get Crittendon the ball in open space where he can be effective.
On the flip side, when Randolph played defensively, went to their man to man pressure, which then threw a monkey wrench into what South Atlanta Christian wanted to do offensively and got them out of their sets.
All right.
Let's show you what happened in the first half here.
Had to make in Coliseum and Boyle ran up play, got into a big run early Dukes can really shoot coming off the break.
He's got great footwork.
And this kid Price is playing out of his mind.
He's really rebounding, has a lot of energy, brings a lot to the table and you saw the active boards of Randolph play here.
Some more offensive rebound that is that beautiful lob play we saw Duke's went up and got it and there's champagne Duke's boy has champagne.
Duke's just really played well.
I think James Hixon, this is the kid that's been really keeping southwest Atlanta Christian into it He and generous Crittenton great job by Cannon on the follow up and rebounded real well along with Wallace and there's Hixon again but he had big shoes to fill and then showing Duke's off class excellent first half for him.
Great.
Stop and go, goes Crittenton.
He's got so strong of a body wide and Duke's with another layup for Randolph play And as you take a look at our statistics you know field goal percentage in that 30% range.
But still both teams are playing well on offense.
So the game is right there.
On the turnovers right there, 12 to 6 in ran a Southwest Atlanta Christian has 12 Randolph play as you see has six and there's your point differentiation right there 4 to 6 and it's basically an eight point game.
There's six on the board right there.
Rebounds 21 to 14.
That's a big discrepancy.
But Rashard Lewis and Keenan are doing a wonderful job on the glass for Randolph play 21 points oh I'm sorry 13 points for Dukes, two rebounds for Randolph play my question you feel real quickly ran a plays not been in close game all year do you see how that might affect them in the second half.
Well it did.
They're in a little bit of the second quarter winds south southwest Atlanta Christian, it went to their man to man and trapping defense half court wise kind of threw Randolph play out of balance is the game gets closer they're going to have to really go back to try to get it a more of a helter skelter situation.
All right.
Second half coming your way is Randolph Play Lead.
Southwest Atlantic, Christian.
We're back after this.
Welcome back to the Macon Coliseum in Macon, Georgia.
As we get ready to start the third quarter in off play up by 840 to 32 in the class, a state championship game.
And let's hear from Scott Kozlowski on the court.
I'm here with Coach Brooks.
Coach Randolph, play doesn't play a lot of close games.
You're down by eight at the half.
How do you feel about that?
I think we're in a good position.
Praise God.
You know, I know they are awesome team and having played a lot of close games and so we try and just slow them down and and hopefully we'll be able to get the win in the fourth quarter.
All right.
Good.
Good luck in the second half.
Okay.
So we've talked about the chess match throughout the game.
Who's got the advantage right now?
Well, right now, I would think Randolph Clay, they have the advantage of an eight point lead.
So I'm pretty sure they like their situation.
But as you alluded to, I think the closeness, if this gets closer, how will Randolph Clay handle that situation?
But another situation you want to look at is the foul situation.
The depth of these two programs may come down to the bench.
You know, we already know Randolph Clay's got some players in foul trouble.
Eric Thomas, a point guard already with three fouls where he is handling the ball for Randolph Clay, just Lance a cannon from the top of the key by spins it will not hit There's Lewis inside and a jump ball and all three possession will go to southwest Atlanta Christian Hickson in there got a big call on the ball while Lewis was getting up the southwest lane Christian there defensively trapped the first pass so the chess match is starting already slash an experienced senior bringing up the ball finds Hickson there's a press pressure defense named a man that's going to be a Hanover.
You can't throw those one handed air passes into the lane.
Three people.
There's too many arms in the way, especially now with a defense like Randolph could just too quick.
So this administration needs Daryl Slack to get going.
Oh, Eisenhower will hit him.
We'll take the shot.
Not there, but there's Hicks in.
He fouls kids had a heck of a ballgame.
He's kept him in it in the first quarter by just alternating shots and scoring stick backs as he did right there.
He's done a nice job of having a tremendous presence around the basket.
It's more his shot goes up again.
No one put a body on him.
That's the thing.
They're just jumping to go get the ball.
You've got to stay between your man and the basket when you want to rebound.
James Hickson, a68 sophomore, as you mentioned, the big shoes he had, the feel he he's the leading rebounder for Southwest Atlanta Christian with an average of nine per game.
Take the free throw Kenny with the rebound I mean Duke's man to man defense by Southwest that if he gets interior pass to Thomas over the loss and Louis scores sacks got to see the ball in that pass 40 to 34 Randolph playing three point lead pass Crittenton I mean Duke's on him here's Hickson from outside he can't hit rebound by jukes and lift It's looking to run good defense there by Gary Cage and Duke's will take it all the way gets the basket and the foul that might be on Hickson Yeah but she you mean Duke's took the ball 94 feet.
Look down the hallway without getting stopped and got to make him kick the ball out or turn or reverse the dribble.
We got some help side there.
Excellent job.
And again, as a point guard, you must finish foul line and down can hit the free throw.
Hickson cleared his third foul.
Crittendon finds Cage and cage will drive.
He can't hit Cannon and Hickson battling for the ball.
That's going back to self Defense lawyers will keep the possession Hickson open slot.
Zlatko has an open looking hit that time.
The cage is there for the pass.
Great pass to Crittenton.
And Crittenton hit on flat.
He can score down and look for coach book to post him a little bit.
Now in the second half, especially as Thomas continues to and they have the height mismatch there.
Thomas shot up good by Cornelius Price Friedman looking to run.
They'll pop and hit.
They'll go back to the horse.
He might be the player.
Tobias Pittman says, Get on my back, boys.
I'm going to lead us to a state title.
Hopefully, Cornelius Price finds Rashard Lewis.
This kid.
The inside battle between Lewis and Hickson has been fun to watch.
Here he came about.
It will drive your slap fake.
Not there you'll find Taj Cage and he'll Howard can't hit I like the way Howard plays is very aggressive He takes the ball to the basket has no fear shot Lewis taking the foul third foul on Rashard Lewis Nice job attacking the basket Try to use the backboard when he got hit with the contact to the backboard.
We'll take all the air out of your shot.
How's your Howard at the line for southwest Atlanta Christian 63% free throw shooting that real nice stroke he's known for the outside shooting has what coach Courtney Brooks calls tremendous guard skills.
Let's recall his brother did the same thing.
Six, ten, six, 11 that hands like a guard.
He could really dribble the ball.
That was a fascinating and how well he passed pass the ball extremely well.
Well it's a six point lead for Randolph playing for the first trap on the wing is Caden pops he can't hit it Lewis is there can't handle it and the rebound comes to suffer similarly Christian just in photos checked in the game and slot Great move Good finish That was all started on the defensive end of the floor and they end up taking a quick shot when he Brooks says March was Terrell Suggs time of year.
He's coming out in the second half on a mission.
They're lucky they're Cornelius Price with the gifts 4842.
Randolph will get a pass.
Derrick Thomas on him Here's cretin me to start again screen by Hickson now here's Pittman with the shot he can't hit and Hickson with the rebound and he's fouled Oh a jump ball and the alternating positional go to Randolph play I don't like that rule I hate that alternate possession you penalize the defensive team they're Joseph Williams looking on and here's the play it strikes me the defense got the break but I can't stay When they tie up the ball they set up all the possession.
They get it back to the offensive team.
It's not a good roll cannon out wide on coming on the press.
Who's Thomas His pass is intercepted inside by Danny friends and another jump ball and this time they'll go to stop What's the matter Christian?
I don't know if Coach Williams wants Thomas to go in there inside, but the trees he's supposed to kick it out to.
Duke's there on the wing had open shot a six point lead.
Flush the high double screen here at the top of the key.
Well, the Red Devils move that high street up.
It's still alive but their Crittenton finds Crowe throw is credited with a drive Oh sweet pass and the shot is good by Danny French 212.
Track shimmy dips jump to pass and Thomas inside Nice shot Good post.
Lancey Channing of Randolph Play has really kept it in this game 5044 in off play was like this big patient his an open look for Darryl Slack can hit a rough shot Lewis comes with the rebound for Randolph play Thomas as to turnovers in a row how about it's a foul he's got to kick that ball out Darryl Slack takes the charge for southwest Atlanta Christian for four on Thomas next year, Ellington will take his place six point lead for the Red Devils staying in that Thomas is man to man defense by Hickson makes him the drive which is strong Nancy Kenny comes with the rebound at the pass and he summons Duke.
That's just me That's just he threw it ahead and ran off.
They did drought ran southwest then a Christian to the ball That's his speed.
I thought that's what the Red Devils look for.
That wasn't the greatest outlet pass and he just ran and got it.
That was a super job to or Howard on the foul it's his third as Duke hits the free throw to make these free throws down the stretch here I mean Duke's the nets got a little hung up with the 2.7 GPA favorite subjects.
Well, history and geography.
He's got 16 points tonight Rebound by Crittendon on the Miss and Christian looking good for the killer run Nice screen on the ball near the edge Great hands away by Ellington.
Here's Charmaine Duke's three guys around him Wow.
Shot and good And Lewis is there for the follow.
Well, he's having an MVP day.
He is really bailing him out.
He beat Randolph play.
You can blink and it'll be a 20 point lead.
Very.
They are the high speed the free spin out of it and a reaching foul on Charmaine Duke's Randolph play is electing to go under that screen and you really don't want to do that if you're going against a player with great range.
If he doesn't if he can't shoot the ball, yes, you want him under that screen.
If he's got great range, the person guarding the screener has to get close to the screener.
If he gets closer to the man, he's going to scream, get a hedge girl, throw them down, hits Danny French, almost loses it by Slack.
And Tyler Hickson had his shot changed by Lewis for those Britney Nice job that vision by Slack that play and to look for it but they got it 50 to 46 Randolph play here come the Red Devils lands a cannon inside to Ellington Ellington finds Cornelius Price it's not there now for the inside goes to Ellington off the glass and good and the foul looks like Darrell flag Great job great individual effort there Getting on the glass if you like about this They never stop playing just keep going at the basket.
Good things will happen if you just keep going forward hits the free throw it thousands pass Crittenton and that's his second already 14 fouls for Randolph play three for Southwest coast and pushing their flag Look at Southwest L.A. Christian having to extend their offense and their motion there Slack looking for a shot all over them was Cornelius Price but he finds just in front of the stick move and he can't get it.
I mean, Duke's comes away with the loose ball.
Nice play by place to go get that ball.
Don't wait for the referee to make the call and finish out of bounds.
You can get it.
Go get it.
Duke's has it knocked away, but right into the hands he can hit whistle.
Oh, foul.
Underneath they'll go against south coast Atlanta Christian Randolph thing that's a little quicker off the bounce now and then the end of the third flick off the bounce then he's back there Slack just waiting for a foul Wow Nixon denies that it'll stay with the Red Devils with the chest pass from that angle is going to get deflected most of the times.
The defense on the high side, you get a bounce, pass it in Newton fouled Harry Kane and you get tired You tend to reach your feet tend to go dead.
You've got to move your feet defensively Great inbound Ellington Morris coming at him at the screen Oh great flip pass back to Lewis Lewis can't hit Nice to tip it by Keenan Nancy Cannon Oh boy are they active on the offensive boards as he under a minute in the third quarter three in all time the ball boy the Red Devils.
You got to keep it going by 11.
He you've got to keep your composure.
It's all going to start on the defensive end of the floor.
Nice job here by Courtney Brooks playing some more defensive pressure.
Charmaine Dukes feeds Lindsey Cannon and the reverse layup goes.
And here comes that kind of run by the Red Devils.
It's already 5946.
And Coach Brooks is waiting for the quarter for a out cage.
Trapped finds Pittman It's got to heat up at this time in tandem with the rebound over the Dukes.
Look for Randolph Clinton the last shot of the quarter here John 20 seconds.
And Duke's back to back down.
I imagine he's going to take the shot.
Oh, thank you.
See the shot?
He didn't like that Ellington, but nine got to go with about eight flash by Crittendon.
Here's Duke's a long jumper that won't go rebounds no good by Cornelius Price and we've come to the end of the third quarter It's been all Randolph play in the third quarter.
They lead 59 to 46.
We go to the fourth quarter after this booster back to the sky.
Hey, welcome back to the Naked Coliseum, 5946 Randolph play over southwest Atlanta Christian and Phil Hansen.
The story of this game has been the rebound exactly in that third quarter, Randolph play was able to expand their lead with a 13 to 6 rebound advantage in that not only on the offensive end of the floor that's on the defensive end of the floor to southwest Atlanta Christian would take a quick shot and the the tandem of Lewis and Cannon along with Price, have done an outstanding job for Randolph.
Play on the boards Randolph play playing a70 run in the third quarter.
I think this is putting a lot of pressure on the perimeter shooters of southwest Atlanta Christian, too.
They got to make their shots.
Listening to Heritage all over him, double team, but he's able to handle it.
Look at that pass inside to Ellington man to man defense nice That was athletic Christian and they've stepped up the intensity they know it's on the line they want to repeat as champions Here's a shot up good by Ellington and the rebound by Hickson but he's had an outstanding game Hickson that is he's done a superb job for them today looks a lot better the lob and unable to handle his just in front row that gives the Red Devils an opportunity to run this pass.
Cornelius tries.
Boy, what a game he's had off the bench.
Such an unselfish team, Randolph Everybody scores.
Everybody pitches in 6146.
The Warriors are going to make a run.
They need to do it now.
Eisenhower He'll put it up off the glass.
No good.
And another rebound by the score here, the Red Devils.
And there's Duke's.
He can't hit but Cornelius Price gets the rebound and is fouled and he can't have started that break it's rebound exactly again the rebound turns into transition turns into points for that coach who called timeout here wasn't probably happy with that last two possessions on offense looks like it was one on five he stripped down they've got to get more back into the team and some man and player movement and to Howard sticks up his fourth personal foul and the red devils in good shape and let's tell you about the world wide web is this championship game can also be live on the GPB Internet site around the world at W WW dot gboard Just follow the links to connect to the game.
Every game will also be archived and available later on the website as well.
That's w WW dot GP draws and if you're a Randolph play fan somewhere out there in the wild world watching this one you're loving it you got yeah you've got to be really happy with the way things are going now we still have a ball game here South west Christian can't panic just be patient.
You're going to get it back on the defensive end, but you got to do it one possession at a time.
Well, we've noticed that they've stepped up their man to man defense and forcing Randolph play to come out between the rings.
However, unlike the last couple of years, they've done that in this title game against Whitfield.
That interior presence by Randolph Clay has just been overwhelming.
Plus, Southwest Atlanta Christian had the big eraser in the past with Howard back there, was able to make up for a lot of defensive woes and break guys 12 points off the bench.
It's the first time 47% free throw shooter and nine points in the semifinals.
Bernie Brookes feeling the pressure probably didn't account for Price's offensive skills as he makes one of two Hickson with the rebound.
I've seen this kid a couple of times this year.
He just scores That's Gary Kays over the Nixon and Nixon and I love him.
He plays north and South.
Nice job.
Let's a quick trap near turnover but Dexter Ellington able to recover now here's Charmaine Duke Ellington's really played well coming off the bench lob pass inside Cannon and Ken shot is good so you can't allow your opponent that is selfless and then the Christian can allow Randolph play to operate so look so close to the basket they got to get him to post a little higher Crittendon looking the drive and Cannon is short and Kenny with the rebound out to the Dukes is fouled by Creighton.
So we're coming right now into a possession game now Southwest Olynyk Christian doesn't want to get into that is now every time Randolph plays he's going to come down they're going to take some time off the clock third foul reverse Crittendon Sharlene Dukes will go to the line a positive here, John is that southwest Atlanta Christian getting his 556 to go in the game with 17 fouls.
Every time they fail, the clock is going to stop.
Conversely, they don't want Randolph playing at those free throws.
You can have to give something to get something.
But the biggest opponent now you've got to fold Monster.
You've got the clock in your opponent, but you can't get score with that little time in the park.
It's possible.
And then with a shot, it hits him.
Once they hit a heat up for the Warriors to get back Jamari Jones all over something big scary here you got call the turnover and there's that pressure that's that one minute the pass again it's just if you jump in the air and you're going to come down, there's nowhere else to go.
You're not Peter Pan, so you're coming down.
You're going to have to get rid of the ball and.
If the defense just plain hesitating, they go pick it off.
15 point lead for the Red Devils, 19% chance to go on the run.
Trailing with a long jumper at Short Hickson with the forward.
He'll follow but they've got to get there every time Kenny comes away with the rebound.
Allen get backs out the semantics a little too much and Duke's go out of bounds.
That's good that Coach Williams crazy.
You can't throw the ball away you're in great shape.
You're up 15 and you throw the ball out of bounds.
You've got to come down.
At least get a shot off every time down the floor.
Offensively.
Danny Friend checks in for the Warriors.
Jamari Jones inbounds Scott in for Southwest Win Christian Benjamin Scott in as well we're look at Hickson working hard inside getting a screen Kenny Crittendon an open look for slack All right Jones there Brennan battling for the ball Boy you've got to have an inside presence to play championship basketball that's less than a Christian hands there with Hickson.
And if you put Crittendon down there, he may be the best coach, the player on the floor, him.
He's such a tough match up.
And I think we're getting to the point he missed the free throw, but Hickson knocked it out of lancing kidding.
I'm sorry.
I'm shy.
Lewis fans and a bounce to the Red Devils for them in the southwest Atlanta Christian for getting to the point where they had to put these guys on his back.
Here's Ellington with a hand.
The back pass that goes out of bounds.
It's a three straight turnovers for Randolph play.
They didn't even get a shot off or take any time off the clock.
You can't have that here allowing Southwest Atlanta Christian to hang around and these guys are champions Bowl champions, just like this whole back court violation for 6000 guys.
Handler now he steals and a foul and fell flat That's a frustration that come down You know any technical three Dexter Ellington working hard and now Darrell Slack just command his fifth foul he's done and he's and that's a that's a pretty major blow for the warriors He's a good player tough player Two points for Slack and they made more contributions offensively from like this one you got to look at who he's going against.
Yeah Duke's on him most of the game because Ellington and Thomas were Ping it on fitting in 6752 Randolph County is that four and a half minutes and Crittenton great pass inside it go take it inside quick two now you got to play good solid defense make them turn it over go for quick steal and you have to look at starting to foul Ellington inside and trice Another big spark off the bench for Randolph play has been Cornelius Price He's had a great game There's credit in he hits the three a 22nd timeout called misoprostol and a Christian with a down 12 still you still have the ball game Lot of time for all five to play again.
You don't want to try to get it back all at once.
If you don't want to come down and make this a three point shooting, because if you miss, then in turn you're going to have to foul, which takes the pressure off Randolph Clay to come down and shoot Georgia's longest running weekly high school sports in academics program prep Sports Plus airs Thursday evenings at 730 and Saturdays at 11 a.m. and again at 6:30 p.m.
It's that good a show.
Each week you'll meet some of the Georgia's successful student athletes athletic programs and much more.
That's prep sports.
Plus, returning next week exclusively on GPB back in the making Coliseum 6957 Randolph play up by 12 John that's the fastest half hour show on the night there Yeah but I've been told I slow it down when I'm on that Ellington over to some in Duke's double teamed by the interior pass in the cannon intercepted by southwest Atlanta Christian and then the flipped Let's turn the ball over now for the last five times and they've got to start taking some time off the clock It is heating up from three point win.
Well, we go we've got nine point game now.
We'll see if the pressure sits very nicely.
Has not been a close game all year.
Let's see how the pressure they handle that.
There's Duke's oh, he's in left hand picks it with the rebound and the Southwest flag Christian like he study right as Crittenden is still in and the lead is down to seven timeout Randolph play a minute ago it was 15 point lead oh timeout check out Javaris Crittenton Boy is he starting to heat up from three point line He's so such so strong upper body wise which allows him to shoot the balls from such distances.
Plus he's got great legs.
He's very powerful.
He's what you call a slasher.
And can you recall his freshman year ten years ago, he was out here and it emitted the bright lights of the in the big stage.
Got to them two years later.
I mean, just think of what they went through last year with the, you know, Dwight Howard show basically.
And now this year how he's matured from sophomore to junior.
And I mean, he's sustained pressure.
It's been fun watching all those kids on the South.
US land teams mature and develop.
You look at Justin Prothro, I remember when he was like five, nine, eight, oh, run for the Warriors and Kristen has all eight points.
Well, he's tough and big players step up in big situations and he's your horse.
You got to go to him.
He and Hickson have kept him in the game in the second half.
He's at that point now where you said, Boys, get on my back, let's win the state title.
The Randolph play they've had they have three state titles on their resume in 83, 86, and then again last year, all too a title they dropped down to single-A this year dominated the the classification the average margin of victory and this blew my mind throughout the season was almost 50 points.
Javaris Crittenton was 31 points, five rebounds.
He is seven of eight from the free throw line.
He has been outstanding, Sonny Rollins and fighting Rashard Lewis and he won.
That's a good play like the Coach Williams did coming out of timeout.
Let's get back to what got us that 15 point lead are dominant inside play He just had a turnover that was good play though Crittenden picks with the High Street and Crittenton who's feeling it that this time it hits him flying in there, couldn't handle it and some in Duke's family retrieves the ball for Randolph play Dexter Ellington an open lane He's well blocked by Hickson and here comes the Warriors on their break It's Tobias Crittendon here's Hickson not there but Danny Friend is and he can hit great forwards for his price with the rebound there battling inside Duke's is fouled.
It's got to come down to a free throw contest here.
Two and a half to go.
Duke is going to have to step up and make a few free throws.
Great boards.
Prices really rebounded down the stretch here in the second half.
Well, this what's it about?
Championship play.
You got to fight.
You got to be aggressive.
You have to intimidate.
And Jahvaris couldn't just commit his fourth personal foul.
Eric Thomas checks back into the game Dexter Ellington and get a rest I mean Duke's 16 points hits the free throw.
He averages 23 points per game.
What, at 31 in the semis?
It's a pair and lead is up to nine bars crippling for the two man game significantly in he has been that hot hand for the south coast Atlantic Christian warriors drives him at this time and there's Lewis 39 Smart play by Lewis near the two minute mark the stand in job make the extra pass you're going to get a lay layup 70% of the time he can just wind play 11 point lead under two Brendan and just swept away but recovers in shot up to no good by Hickson and the rebound by Randolph play Rashard Lewis and Lewis and Channing have that's been the difference in the ballgame right there Randolph gets on the boards things don't turn their way Oh the fancy cut for Georgia.
They're starting to feel it.
The foul on Jamari Jones Southwest Atlantic Christian made it right into the third quarter But again you blink and Randolph play has eight points on the board and it's solely predicated on their ability to get on the offensive defensive glass.
When they do that, Randolph play is awful tough to handle because they're holding you to a one and done situation on the offensive end of the floor, but on the defensive end of the floor, they just coming down there and killing you on the boards.
That way they just don't let you breathe.
Randolph As you take a look at Courtney Brooks, his mission, they talked about last year, the mission to win a state championship, a sophomore, ceramic Christian, which they accomplished this year.
It turned into a passion because they felt they had to prove themselves.
They weren't just Dwight Howard.
This was a team.
This is a program.
And I think they've proven, oh, most definitely.
I mean, to get to this point is is not easy.
I mean, and I don't care who's come and gone or what else.
This team is a very, very good ball club and they're very well coached.
Lindsey Cannon with 12 rebounds.
Rashard Lewis was 13.
That's just Simmons.
Dukes misses the first free throw.
Let's talk about Randolph play because this they've been a program for many years.
Joe Williams says in his number of years there has built a program that has won three state titles and on the verge of winning a fourth.
Crittenden only came to Eisenhower.
He's been told most of the day is threatening the shot and rebound by Randolph play.
That's his cannon and knocked out of bounds will stay with the Red Devils.
See the problem if you get into this three point shooting contest to get you back in the game fast as you play behind the power curve.
If you miss now you're forced to foul and now the pressure is not that great for these guys to make the free throws because you have not cut into the lead very near the one minute mark at the foul and Eric Thomas there's the feed inside and layup is good by Dexter Ellington and Randolph play well on its way It's pretty misses winning their second straight state championship Eisele to Eisenhower He can't hit battle for the board Crittendon near the 32nd Martin Creighton with a long shot it won't go and Richard Lewis with the rebound and the foul and the red devil fans are up there they're smelling the state championship.
I think they see the tape coming down the stretch here.
But you got to have deep respect to admire all hard Southwestern benefits.
He's playing down the stretch.
Randolph plays an outstanding program and they operate under the tenets of the forces class, consistency, careers and championships.
Joseph Williams will put another.
He's 30 seconds away of putting another state championship trophy in the trophy case.
Danny Cuthbert I like that, they said at the intermission, there's young 17.
He does look like a young seven day a winning.
Does that do your job of leaving?
Owens and is it really losing ages you real quick match coming in the celebration begins and the Randolph play sidelines are you going to ask him in his 42 years of coaching as you say change the basketball and he goes with John.
They still put the basketball in the basket.
Basketball basketball's a simple game.
This puts it in perspective.
Then carry it along three and four time out by the warriors.
It's like the heaven and fruit, the wheel lately, either heading to work for you.
No sense reinventing the wheel because you look at Courtney Brooks in the Southwest Atlanta Christian team, their effort to win back to back titles will fall short.
But you know, it's a big accomplishment to get back here, especially with the talent drain there from last year.
Exactly.
I mean, what they've done to continue what they've built.
And as Coach Brooks mentioned earlier, he said he wanted to develop a program, not just a team.
And that's what you do.
You want a coach and you want to develop a program.
You just don't want to coach a team.
You want to develop your program so that last year after year after year and he's done that.
I mean, one timeout left for the itself with the wrong person.
Well, I got a feeling with Javaris Crittenton returning and his little Howard and Hixon, well, they'll be back.
They'll be back.
I wouldn't be surprised if they make a return trip.
Randolph play their team.
I think this is a yearly occurrence.
So what?
I like what he's doing now.
He's still playing.
He's coaching for next year, trying to win this game.
But coaching for next year, always teams don't go on vacation.
You always want to teach high school.
Howard Keep.
And then you take a look at Courtney Brooks.
In his sixth year, he has built a program down at Southwest Atlantic first and second.
He's 15 and three in the state tournament, already won 140 games in six years.
That's that's pretty strong.
That is pretty good.
Andy Walker, a57 junior at the free throw line, and he'll contribute with two points in the state championship effort.
Joe Williams getting ready for state number four Javaris Crittenton can Hit and the rebound by Brian Thornton and a whistle I'm waiting for Coach Williams to smile He's had that scowl on his face the whole game.
I think he gave a smile when Dukes came off.
He gave him a hug, said, Great job, kid.
And his thing is like he was cut in the net.
I'm pretty sure he's got a big grin here and a few in a few seconds.
But again, he's coaching too.
He's prepared for next year.
He became the head coach at Clay County High School in 1962, when the schools merged in 1980.
He stuck around.
This will be his fourth state championship in Randolph play.
He won a state championship at Clay County High School.
What I really like is the rep, the starters for Randolph players sitting over on the bench cheering on the subs.
I think that's a nice gesture.
Well, a year ago they were to a state championship championship.
The mission is to get back to drop down the way they win another way.
That's what they're going do.
The Red Devils all year 2005 single-A state champion keeper Jack Jones.
And just wait till they have their class reunions.
What do you think the topic of conversation will be when they get back together to the alumni games or something else?
Randolph Play wins a second straight state title, this time in class single-A.
And let's go down to Scott, Kansas.
Coach, congratulations.
Your fourth state championship.
How does this team rank against some of the have you had in the past?
Well, it was great college what we had last year to play, so similar to last year.
We'll have a better talent, but we didn't bother this team.
We had to have to play hard and to enjoy it.
Coach, congratulations.
All right.
All right.
Thank you, Scott.
Well, only Baqubah is won back to back state championships.
You take a look at the 58 straight win for Randolph Clay.
They won 14 five, a Grand Isle Clay takes to AA last year.
And once again this year, Phil Hanson enjoyed it.
Thank you very much, Carter.
All right.
And for Sklodowska, I'm John Wilkerson.
We hope you enjoyed it for making broadcast of this Georgia High School Association State basketball championship has been made possible in part by Georgia's electric membership corporations.
