Live from the Macon Calcium in Macon, Georgia, is the class single-A boys state championship game.
The Whitfield Academy Wolfpack.
The defending state champions take on the Wesleyan Wolves for their class single AA state championship for the boys and tell everybody Welcome John Wilkerson.
Phil Hansen.
We saw a great girls game.
Now we're expecting the same from the boys game with Phil Academy going four back to back state championships and Canard Buckman back.
Mean boy, can he play one word warrior.
He scores inside outside posts like a mad man can bang the boards with anybody heart and soul of a boys Arkansas academy.
He's double figures on points per game.
And now let's hear from head coach Tyrone Johnson.
But first, we want to show you the starting lineups as I get ahead of myself, Cameron Ford and Chris Lovelace, ten games to kill Cotton and the aforementioned Backman, your starting five for the Wolfpack and Tyron Johnson, he feels pretty good about coming to make it.
And this means a lot to the team.
Oh, it's exciting.
I mean, maybe even more so this year than ever before, because we really didn't anticipate this after losing eight seniors last year.
We're very talented.
We had a chance to do well last year, so we didn't really think we'd be in this position this year.
So this is real good to be here.
Well, for Hanson, the girls Wesleyan won the state championship.
The boys won't be the same, definitely.
And they're led by Wes Carver, super player, quarterback of the team, offensively and defensively gets them in.
It sets excellent three point shooter when his feet are set strong with the ball, distributes the ball excellently in their offense.
Here's your starting lineup for the Wolves at Wesleyan Head, West Carver, Carter, Brantley, Griffin Sharp and Andrew Fucking and Shane Smith are starting five for the Wolves and for Skip Natalie.
They feel good about coming to make it and playing for a state championship.
Well, after coming out of that region as a four seed, it means a lot because we really had to battle to get here.
And you know, but this is a group of seniors that has battled all year long.
So it's it's a great honor, especially with our girls being here.
It's great for our community and it means a whole lot to our kids and to me, too.
But we're just kind of enjoying it and this is the the fruit of hard labor, as you might say.
So we're glad to be here, though.
All right.
Now let's go right to the player introductions.
And to do that, Eddie Ashley and the Wesleyan Wolves record of 25 wins and losses dressed in white as your home team.
May I have your attention for the starting lineups?
First, with Bill Academy at forward number five, a six foot four junior, Kennard back from high forward number 23, a six foot three.
Sophomore Kenneth Gay, 32, the six foot two junior, Cale Hutton.
Right.
Guard number 21, a five foot nine.
Senior Chris Loveless at forward number 25, a six foot three Sophomore Cameron Thornton and Whitfield Academy's head coach Caron Johnson.
And now for your Wesleyan woes.
At guard number 12, a six foot senior West Carver at forward number 21, a six foot four senior, Griffin Shell at guard number 24, a six foot senior.
Carter Brantley at forward number 25, a six foot three junior, Andrew Frankie at forward number 34, a six foot three.
Sophomore Shayne Smith and West Lions head coach Skip Madeley.
Well, now you know the particulars.
It's seven off the class single-A boys state championship game is coming up when we return.
This list.
And we've had some folks suggest that after watching Jon Nelson handle the rock on the camera today, that we need to send him to summer basketball camp, use some of the money for that.
But we're not going to every dollar is going to high school sports.
I still don't know how you do this, but thanks for watching.

Welcome back to Macon.
We get set the tip off the boys state championship game and class single.
But before we do, let's go courtside to Scott Kozlowski.
Very much, John.
Just downed right before the game.
I had a chance to talk to both coaches, ask them what they were going to have to do to win the game.
First of all, Coach Johnson with Whitfield Academy, he told me that they were going to have to play defense and pressure the ball without fouling.
He said offensively they're really going to have to execute.
And lastly, he said, rule the glass.
Now, Coach Masoli with Wesleyan also said rebounding was going to be a major challenge for them.
He knows how physical Whitfield Academy is.
He says they need to play within themselves, be mentally tough and take care of the basketball and lastly, he said, it won't hurt if we make a few shots.
Jump.
Okay, Phil Hansen, your keys to the game.
Well, I'd have to concur with what was just said.
I think rebounds are a must.
Defensive transition is huge because Whitfield was run all day half court offensive execution.
Wesleyan has to run their offensive sets, mental disciplines are key.
You cannot turn the ball over and when you get fouled, you have to make your free throws.
Well, as you guys see, here is a contrast in style.
As you take a look at the officials at today's game, Whitfield will play 94 feet.
They will press you Wesleyan.
They like to play that that play in the midcourt here.
They like to play that half court game.
They like to pound you with their flex offense out of their man to man set.
WHITFIELD With the basketball, Chris Lovelace handles the point.
This is his third state championship game.
Man to man defense sagging in the lane for Wesleyan Great help side principal tackle cotton They got the Lovelace he's a quarterback of this basketball team these teams are very similar other than one likes to run and one likes to play in a half court set.
But other than that, they're almost mirror images of each other on cotton, on the nice high lonesome from back then.
And Whitfield draws first blood.
Here comes the pressure.
And of course, the key is how this Wesleyan team handles the pressure.
And there's a near turnover.
Nice save.
I am talking.
I really like Griffin Chant for Wesleyan.
He is a big time winner That's sharp with the basketball on the drive.
Thank God he's a playmaker, John.
He just makes play after play after play like he did against in the semi against Wilcox County takes the ball north and south goes to the basket He's like a poor man's Luke Heron goatee for Notre Dame Nice comparison the champs numbers for the season He's the leading scorer of 15 points per game Nice stroke from the free throw line Skip Natalie In his fourth year he spent three years as Jean Azar's assistant learned from the best and then moved over as head coach of the boys team.
Then 26 led them to the state title in 2008.
That team, led by Tanner Smith, one of two four champ at the line.
Good on Ball defense by Carver for Wesleyan Whitfield Academy.
They've won two state championships 2008 I'm sorry, 2003 and 2009.
The Wesleyan is man to man defense.
They're not going to guard Backman in the end to kill cotton outside the lane.
They're going to sag in the lane.
And back then his call is found inside and reach in.
He's like a poor man's Adrian Dantley.
He he's going to make body contact with you every time down low and get the three point play that's old school when you go in.
Adrian Daily.
I am old for fouls on Griffin champ his first back move Wesleyan is coming in with Ty Teague a good three point standing shooter hit a big time backbreaker against Wilcox in the third quarter in the corner at the semifinal game.
Kennard Backman What a state tournament he's had 25 points in the semifinals, also had 13 rebounds in that game.
He is a monster on the glass, only five points in the quarterfinals.
I'm one of two on that trip.
Man to Man Pressure by Whitfield Academy Broken Easily by Shane Smith.
And this is where Wesleyan excels in that half court game.
Now, what you're going to get here, you're going to get a cross screen and a down screen on the same side of the floor.
The ball and Cutter Brantley shuffled his feet a turnover, and Whitfield will get the ball.
We're just underway in the boys class single-A state championship game.
John Wilkerson for Hanson, Scott Kozlowski joining from Macon, Georgia.
Earlier, the Wesleyan Lady Wolves won their seventh state championship, defeating Savannah Christian.
The Wesleyan boys now playing the defending champion Whitfield Academy.
Wolf Pack Wesleyan wins a sweep.
The class AA state champions Gypsies games.
This is the rebound by Smith Strong, rebound by Shane Smith.
That was a nice defensive set there by Wesley.
And they made Whitfield Academy play to shorten the game into a 15 foot game instead of a 94 foot game.
Brantley double team and stripped in a region called on to kill Cotton That's what Whitfield Academy does so well They put so much on ball pressure on you they grab they reach they go after the ball so hard it's tough to officiate this game because it's constant contact.
Tyrone Johnson in his ninth year, Whitfield Academy, he took over for Mark Price in 2001.
Rice laid the foundation as Carver's fouled by Lovelace.
Mark Price laid the foundation before he moved on and Tyrone Johnson picked up the ball and ran with it.
One thing about Carver, he's deceptively strong.
He's put together well.
He can take the contact and still go up and get the shot off possibility.
Get the two points here now at the line.
Most kids get hit and get bumped all out of whack and can even get the shot off.
Well, according to Coach Mattingly, he's the Iron Man.
He's got to play 32 minutes.
Definitely.
They they can't lose him.
Averaging 14.7 points per game is West Carver.
He's a senior role definition by Wesleyan.
And Coach Mattingly is really fun to watch.
Each kid knows exactly what they're supposed to do.
We're tied at three early in the first quarter and price Washington handling the ball.
He shut it down and turnover I think you got a moving screen there.
You've got to lock yourself in to tell Cotton Call.
When you set that screen, you want to pick the lower one third of the man that you're screening for sales, Kenneth Gaines, called on the foul.
Was Carver handling the ball on the sideline?
Bryce Washington applying the pressure.
So that's why I allude to it in his strength.
He got bumped.
It wasn't and didn't lose the ball.
A lot of kids would have been knocked off, off the ball.
And Shane Smith trying to split the double team is fouled and my B on Gaines again Wesley is a little deceptive John they can take you off the dribble They do a great job of catching sit sweep and and square and look into the basket and attacking that defensive man's up foot.
Two quick fouls.
On Kenneth Gaines.
Teague likes that corner shot.
Well, none of these Wesleyan boys are afraid to shoot especially that guy Griffin Shamet Look at them always looking to penetrate Look in the dry they're searching for three if they can get him started Things look good for Wesley in because he can really light it up he's very streaky in the second round Fergie with seven of eight from three point land for 30 points he's warmed up in in the semis.
He started off slow but once he got going then that's when the tide started to change.
The six three junior.
Is Andrew fucking a three point lead for the wolves?
Wesley, in defense, is doing a good job of sagging in the paint, which is causing Whitfield Academy to operate more on the outside than getting back Man on the block.
Watch for some pick and rolls to isolate him.
That's games that's short.
Shane Smith comes away with a rebound.
There's an old adage you want to make a team play left handed.
If they're a right handed team with Wesley in, does it make you play their game?
They do a great job of controlling the tempo of the ballgame.
Shams, always looking to go, kicks it out.
That's Ty Teague.
It's a good shot to Kyle Cotton with the boards.
Whitfield Looking to beat Wesley in down the floor.
Good Recover by the wolves back man inside He's fouled They're going to have a tough time with that being Wesley if they're going to play back in behind him in the post because if he's able to lock you down on the block, he's going to drop Stefan score all night.
You got to get more ball pressure on the player that's passing the ball there.
That was Gaines at the time.
You've got to get better ball pressure there.
Blackman, a junior, says his favorite player is LeBron James because he plays like an animal and in some ways so is Kennard Backman.
I would have to agree with that.
Very active inside his back from great positioning on the offensive.
Boy, that's one thing we noticed in the semifinal on Wednesday night.
As we go to break here at the boys class single-A state championship game with Leslie and up early broadcast of today's games is made possible in part by the following broadcast of this program is made possible in part by the Georgia High School Association.

So Phil Hansen, what do you want to chat about?
Well, I like the way the tempo if I'm whistling, I love the way the game is being played right now.
It's it's basically turned into a halfcourt set with I'm Whitfield Academy.
We've got to get this thing going up and down a little bit more and try to get some free quick baskets off our transition.
You said during the break it seems like they're running in mud.
Exactly.
That's what Wesleyan does here.
And they've got good enough skilled kids in regards to Champ in parking that can all handle the ball lemons effect in the game with a pass off the seat of his britches.
And that's Shane Smith with a little scoop that won't go.
He's battling inside for the ball with Backman and lemons and we got to tie up nice play by lemons came in off the bench Whitfield Academy hands with lemons win get corps in Washington.
It's basically the same guy they're bringing off the bench.
They've got great perimeter depth.
Smith looked like he took a shot in the eye for the faint of heart in there.
John, you got to be tough.
Watch for a screen for the screener on the roll.
Oh, great.
No, look.
Pass.
The champ defended well by the call Cotton.
We call that turnover using the elbow.
Griffin Champ commits the foul That's number two on champ They can't lose him.
He's got to be smarter than that because that's not a real good foul.
He's too vital to their team to have him come out quickly.
A substitution coming in.
Rodney Morris.
Rodney Morris, you got to keep your hands inside the framework of your body as an offensive player.
You don't want to extend or they're going to call that foul all the time.
Do you want to create space or distance?
Use your hips to kick to keep Williams checks in as well.
Wesleyan doesn't have a deep bench.
They usually play just six players and already schematically, he's had to go deep in his bench.
But that last possession offensively, Whitfield did a good job of speeding up.
Wesley got a miss lay up and then a foul.
Hey, hey, hey.
Let's tackle cotton over the back.
Then we'll drive it.
Oh, great.
Dump off.
So no good by Thornton.
I'll stay with the Wolfpack.
Cameron's going to finish that nice pass by Bagley Drive drawn dish.
Gordon, just a sophomore to the ISO down low brought his back and inside the kick to the cotton battling in the boards There's Washington.
It's a good moss it's a good offensive set though by Whitfield's good inside outside action back then made a nice pass to cotton for the three just didn't go down.
But it was good.
It was good movement.
It didn't get ball movement and man movement.
With a little dribble penetration.
You're going to be effective offensively.
Wesleyan going for their second state championship in three years.
A pull up by Shane Smith.
They're going strong for the board with Cameron Lemons and he's fouled now Coach Mather and he's not going to like that the last two trips down offensively, Whitfield Academy's done a good job of speeding up Wesley to come down and take a first quick shot.
They don't have rebounding position established.
Not only did they not make the shot, they got two quick fouls trying to get the rebound and reach.
Both teams aren't shooting.
Well, film, that's a lot to do with the defense I mean they're every shot in the final here is being challenged and contested.
Shane Smith was called on the foul It's his first very patient Whitfield Academy team.
That's not usually the range for Keenan Buckman, but he thought about it.
Well, that's where you want to keep him.
You want to keep him as far away from the fast as possible, drive by Washington when he's fouled inside.
Now, if I'm coach Mattingly, I'm not going to like the fact that we've got 16 fouls already.
You've got to put Whitfield Academy in the bonus this quick end of the game with 144 to go in the first quarter price.
Washington at the line six foot sophomore averaging about six points game who cost Washington busted out in the first round and social circle with 13 points six rebounds.
He had a nice shimmy that we watched and he played real well against tell county girl kind of yes sir very active underneath Wiggins tell tell to by making your free throws now allows Winfield Academy to step up the pressure they love the pressure in the backcourt does Winfield Academy they want to make you force you in the bad decisions they were fouled and little like they were.
Lemmons commits it to 17 fouls for Winfield that's a size thing.
Carver's not going to get affected by Lemon's bumping and banging and reaching for an adding He misses but gets his own rebound.
Can't get the foul.
Washington had it knocked out of bounds.
You've got to stay with the wolves.
That's a must.
You can't allow that to happen.
What do you Yeah somebody got to block out the shooter every time right?
Well, don't let him get set.
I fucking miss them.
Morris battling with the rebound with back then and back there wins that battle Gordon up the lemons and a bad palace say the same Smith on the steal doesn't have numbers are still goes up strong has a slapped by Simeon lemons and he'll go it alone now he's got to knock down these free throws where it's the third trip in a row for Wesley and they have yet to scratch and you see the foul committed by Cameron Lemons.
Come on.
Second foul on lemons.
James Smith, a sophomore.
And that led still not kind to you got to make it Wesley on the free throw line and you get them in the penalty.
You've got to capitalize from the stripe because these points are just as important as the ones in the endgame.
Empty trip.
Again, Jordan Quarter text in the game for Whitfield Number three at 510 sophomore Blackmon inside triple teamed fights inside and whistle and a foul on Wesleyan.
What Kennard needs to learn how to do is keep that ball chin high and above body.
He's a big, strong guy, but when he brings it down to his knees, it's just everyone.
All the little guys are going to be jumping there and getting and he's never gonna be able to get it back up.
Everybody take a look at the six four Junior.
He's the tallest player on this Whitfield team back then was on last year's state championship team.
We're all knotted up at six.
There's this number so far this afternoon.
He's again very active inside.
You and I were impressed Wednesday night in the semifinals with this positioning on the offensive end.
But, you know, we lost him.
The offense rebounds.
He had my game.
He does a great job of stepping in and sealing you to get inside, rebounding position.
Rodney Morris loses the bounds and I'll go to the Wolfpack.
So what are you seeing here for Hanson?
Just because it doesn't look like any kind of flow has been established yet by either team.
If I'm Skip madly, I'm dancing all the way up and down the bench because this is exactly what you want.
You don't want this game going up and down 100 miles an hour.
Make it in a half court set.
And then, like I said, to get the lead.
It's a tie game at six apiece with your best player.
Champ, Champ on the bench and he can't I know he's one of those last three times getting the shot off or getting either a better look.
But still, the tempo is exactly where he wants it again.
Whitfield Academy going four back to back state championships.
Great turnover.
Shane Smith is been active on the defensive end for Wesleyan.
There's TABOR with Bryce Washington all over him with the back and foul inside is Cavour and Washington and tackle cotton collide So that's the matchup with the academies having a tough time with his with cap strength and he's able to sit down on that basketball keep it on his hip, keep good ball you in the man principal and the bumpin in the bang is not going to bother him Second sound price Washington once again now they're right back on the line we've got and have with the academy in the bonus this early came here finally breaks the hex at the free throw line giving the wolves the lead Wesleyan was a foursome coming into this tournament after going undefeated in the region and lost two games in the region, ten in his favor collects both free throws, got in as a fourth seed, so they had to play to the tougher teams getting in this case and the great look inside the box then can't finish but look at them battle inside and get the basket.
He's relentless.
You got to keep a body between he and the basket.
Here's Morris on a two on one They'll take it all the way.
It's all good And the foul that'll get Wesleyan going.
And the Wesleyan fans standing up and applauding that effort by the young man, Rodney Morris.
That was close.
Nice take.
Nice finish.
What was Morris at the line completes the three point play and a sweet three point lead for the wolves.
For the wolves.
Oh, that was a great move.
Inside by textile, cotton.
Great athletic move by cosh took that baseline and Andrew Furkan commits the turnover look for Wesleyan to try to get the ball and to save his hand against that pressure.
It's Taco Cotton with a long three at the buzzer.
Oh, that's got the Wolfpack standing up and cheering.
Defending state champions are up by two at the end of the first quarter in the boys state championship game on GPB.

And welcome back to a raucous Macon policy in the Boys state championship game and class single-A.
And Phil Hansen, here is that big shot by ticket to kill cotton.
That was a bomb.
But once the tempo changed, John Whitfield Academy went on a50 unanswered run led by tackle cotton to Kell cotton, six to junior at 15 points in the semifinals.
And Whitfield Academy will start off if you take a look at the shooting percentages.
WHITFIELD Now, 40% to seven for Wesley.
And that's a shot no good by by cotton.
Good board by Perkins Andrew working not afraid to shoot that three as we saw earlier Taylor with the penetration and tie.
That's a big shot.
Great dribble penetration kick to the open man on the wing.
Nice play by Carver Wesley.
And back in front with Gordon looking inside.
There's back then but it's knocked away by Smith.
Battle for it.
It'll go to Wesley.
And on the tap, look for Whitfield Academy.
Make one more pass John from the point to the wing.
And that allows Backman to seal his defender on his hip for a drop step layup.
Actually, they call it 22nd Time Out Smart by the Wesleyan walls.
You take a look at Skip, Natalie talking to his team again in his fourth year as head coach of the Wesleyan Wolves.
And as I mentioned earlier, he was Japanese guards assistant for three years.
And we just saw her win her seventh state championship.
So this is soaked in all that knowledge.
The champions Green champions out there.
You take a look at the Whitfield bench, Tyrone Johnson leading the troops.
They've been to the state title game five times and won it twice.
And Morris had trouble handling that.
But Smith comes away with the loose ball.
That's Teague driving and he's met there by Whitfield to kill cotton and commits a turnover.
Wesley will retain possession due to the good take off the baseline throw and call a tie up and so it will go to Wesleyan on the doing possession Perkins coming off the dunking off the screen not there and Teague battling inside with Washington looking to battle inside another tie up but the Wolfpack will get this one Teague is deceptively strong has great long arms went up there and got that ball to Whitfield Cammy defenders they call the foul I saw a tie up and the foul was also called.
They had a reach for that foul called on Jordan Corps.
So now since I take the line coach matter he's got to like this because now they've have a two point lead and Shantha still on the bench with the two fouls Whitfield And there's a strong hold on the back then great outlet to cotton and cotton will drive not there Washington has hacked inside he'll go to the line at this level John the biggest thing that you want to do is you get challenged the shot.
You don't want to try to block it because you know the guys at this level to reach the goal above you and score, he's going to score maybe 30%.
But if you foul in trying to block the shot now, you put him on the line where the worst he's going to shoot 60.
Rodney Morris is committed three fouls off the bench people you just keep your ground defensively and let the weakside guy come for the block and get it.
GRIFFIN Schempp checked back into the game now.
He's got to be real smart.
He cannot pick up his third foul.
He's playing with two fouls now, picked up two quick ones in the first quarter.
Look at him.
Handle the ball.
He's always looking to drive and shoots an airball And that trip Here's Washington leading the break for Whitfield Bright eyes and a great blocked high team that's even active That's the point I missed the first defender stop the ball the weakside defender got the block.
That's exactly what you want.
Here's another look.
And here comes the weakside guy.
That's an excellent block Another basket by Whitfield right off the end down to kill cotton Let's see Wolfpack and the wolves leading by one Perkins like a caver Herro penetrate off Washington and he's called on the charge a little out of control.
Nice job by cotton to step up there and take that charge.
The key is on taking that charge.
A couple of things you want to do A take the charge with your chest, tuck your chin to your chest.
Don't have a concussion when you hit the ground and do not reach back with your hands because that's when you get the sprained finger of the broken wrist.
We feel looking to take the lead back in.
Always looking to shoot is to kill cotton Back then, inside will give and go back around.
Backing down, looking for that shot.
He scores.
That's too easy.
If they're going to allow back in the post on the first marker, if he drops steps baseline he's going to have the angle all night long.
You've got to either get him to post on the block or below because if he turns baseline, the backboard is taken out of play.
Champ had the open look decided not to take the nice crossover dribble and a blocking foul called on to kill cotton that was a big play either way that was huge.
That would have been James third foul.
Now he's going to the line that was a monster play so Griffin champ not afraid to live life on the edge on that drive second foul on to kill cotton Griffin Champion the only member of this Wesleyan team that was part of the 2008 title run.
There's his numbers for the day He along with Tanner Fant and Wesleyan, gets the offensive board now retain possessions.
Cavour looking to drive picks it up to tie Teague 30 has it knocked away by Whitfield to kill cotton leading the break and cotton look in the finish he took steps on the turnover.
Wesleyan is doing a good job of challenging every shot down for Whitfield Academy.
There's not very many easy looks that Whitfield's been able to get this this game.
That's the second of six basketball games here on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Southern Wesleyan Lady Wolves win the state championship and girls single day.
So back to him.
There is there's fucking no great boredom working inside and he's found the play that's going to get lost there.
John, is that play that Smith made passing the ball back to Fergie?
Nice job by both players.
Herky moving.
Hey, without the ball, I didn't stand.
If you stand, a dead man can guard you every time you make a pass cut.
He the third personal foul called on to kill cotton has a champagne active inside, but he's always looking to drive as he nails the first free throw and away from the ball.
He's getting in position for that offensive board.
He's deceptively quick.
Six for senior and a very good first step, 23 points in the semifinal against Wilcox County.
One of two on this trip.
Nice board by price, but.
Thornton I'm sorry that's twice with the basketball thorn with Griffin champ on him as his core C.J Wingate is checked in for the first time and then the two on Whitfield uniform.
He Smith's not going to guard Backman 20 feet from the basket.
Furkan knocks it away, but still retain possession.
We're going to take a break here at the Macon Coliseum with the Wesleyan Wolves up by a point in this boys single-A state championship game on GPB broadcast of today's games is made possible in part by the following.
Thank you.
Can I help you today?
I know.
Thanks.
I'm just looking.
This is cute and so proud of my dad and he wouldn't do it there, so don't do it here.
Sportsmanship.
It's up to you like they're the fashion police.
And we're back at the Macon Coliseum, which Woodfield Academy up by one here in the second quarter.
And the Boys single-A state championship game.
You know, Georgia's well-deserved reputation for the best high school sports in the country starts at the top with the GHC, the GHC administrators and masters more than 20 championships and sets a standard of excellence for high school sports in Georgia.
And we're seeing an example of that today here in Macon.
You saw it yesterday at the Gwinnett Center at the four and five state championships.
Wesleyan has three field goals, only three field goals in the last 12 minutes.
And yet they're only down by a point.
And that's core.
Nice shot.
Nice elevation.
Keep himself squared up.
Nice follow through.
Nice settle dribble by Carver.
He's strong enough to just keep his body between himself and his opponent in the ball and they can't get it from him.
Great ball you in the man principal there Shep with a three strong rebound by back then Whitfield looking to push through the hands of C.J Wingate over back to Wesley you've got to catch it first, John You always got to catch it first.
Watch it in your hands.
Make sure your thumbs are behind the ball.
Oh, there really hasn't been much of a rhythm to this game, but it looks like Whitfield was starting to get into theirs.
Definitely in do the fact defensively is what's causing it where Wesley is coming down and making one pass shot, the other run this flex offense we're going to get across screen in a down screen on the same side of the floor just to get a little movement, maybe five passes, two ball reverses before you get the shot screen.
Nice pass there by a beautiful pass to Smith and he'll go to the line as he's fouled by Thornton.
I think Wesley, we get that all night long if they'll just make five passes and two ball versus they're going to get the open shot as opposed to coming down one pass shot and the defense doesn't have to move.
You've got to make the defense go from strong side, the weak side back, the strong coming from the weak.
And once you do that, they can't outrun the basketball.
Shane Smith is called a warrior by Coach Madeley who likes to mix it up inside on a two on that trip to the line.
And there's a nice play by Teague.
But right right now Whitfield retains possession T.J. Wingate there.
I really like the way Wesley in contests all passes in the pass gets a hand in the passing lane, thumb down, back moon at the elbow.
That's changed.
Smith On their own.
They're very well coached inside his back, then battling the double team, trying to drive inside.
Not there, out of bounds.
He's on the bench and he'll stay with the Wolfpack.
Tyrone Johnson in his ninth year.
Wesley No, he'll go to Wesley in Nice post by Sharp by making Backman turn to the inside.
Wesleyan is taking the backboard out of play on Shamet will be fouled by Thornton Champ does a great job of that of getting people to reach in foul because he's a strong kid with the ball again he keeps his body between the opponent the ball and now he lives on the free throw line all night long six four Senior Griffin champ 23 points against Wilcox County in the semifinals, 19 points in the quarters back hit in a double double against Wilcox in the semis.
Oh with his 23 points ten rebounds he's scored in double figures throughout the tournament.
I have a small college job.
I'd be living in his front yard.
He is a prototypical small college player.
I can't run ball.
No, no, no.
Field academy with possession.
Hey, look for the alley oop coming up the backside here.
That's one game with it.
Back.
Bend on the elbow, pops the shot up there.
Great positioning inside by Furkan.
Yeah we may have an over the back call a little bit nice wise introduction by Whitfield Academy.
Do the fact that they can't get anything easy because the help side principles of defense by Wesley and they've got if your man doesn't have the ball they have everybody in the middle of the lane on the off side.
So basically you're going against five on three or five on four advantage defense to offense.
Great job by Wesley and that's the third personal on price Washington Woodfield Academy Andrew working at the line six three JR shooting the double bonus they got to start knocking down these free throws though John It's going to come back to haunt him here at the end.
The game checking in for Whitfield is Cameron Shorten first he's 82% from the free throw line that's the best on this team with the academy I just jinxed them.
Chris Loveless ankle must bother him because he's not playing much.
I'm glad you pointed that out because I just noticed he hasn't been out.
And it's thunder.
So the ankle, it's his heel that's bothering him.
It's in following throughout the tournament.
They definitely miss him.
He's a calming influence.
The senior point guard in this team, Thornton can't hit Taylor with the rebound so.
Well.
When you think of Whitfield Academy, though, Phil, you always think about great guards.
Oh, my gosh.
Maurice LAMB, McConnell There's fucking open look.
Nice shot.
He can get said he can hit it.
Brandon Reed is another one.
They've had a whole stable of players and Andrew Shirking, he's warming up.
Coach Manley says he's just unconscious when he gets in rhythm.
That's Lemmons and Shane Smith with the rebound with the Academy, he's got to get the ball in the bag.
I mean, I don't care if he shoots it, but he's got to touch it at least every time down the floor.
He's got to get more touches and we've got to be impressed.
The Wesleyan commits a turnover there now that'll drive you crazy as a coach.
One handed passes.
You just can't have that because of the defense.
It just John, you can't bring it back.
You're not Spider-Man.
I mean, you've got to use two hands on that ball.
Let's give a little credit to Wesleyan and their inside players on defense because they're doing a good job of keeping Backman from blocking them out.
That's really the key to Backman.
When on the offensive end he's able to get position underneath.
But if you see whoever enters the ball, for example, who passes back and ball that defender is is for face guarding or fronting him.
So they got a defender in the front, the defender in the back, and it's really forced Backman to play the elbow rather than the block.
There's an open look not there, but rebound rebound by Ty team here's a turnover by back then he's fouled and Teague like to have that went back You never want to throw a pass underneath your basket because if the defense shoots the gap you've now created an assist for 37.
Ty Teague commits his second personal foul Because we made the comment earlier in the broadcast, Free throws are a key.
They're going to have to start knocking these things down.
Great.
There you go.
CONAN Backman also plays tight end for the Whitfield Academy football team.
And no doubt about that tight end look, doesn't he?
He's a horse strong kid.
I'm sure he's posting up the fenders on the football field for those short ten yard passes, a free throw ties.
It oh jumped the pass Look out they go.
And great, great defensive play by C.J.
Wingate.
It'll stay with the Wesleyan Wolves as we near halftime here at the Boys State Championship game.
There's Cavour.
It'll be a quick pass here.
You go ahead.
Under.
Under ten.
Working on the drive?
No, but it looks like a guy.
Him.
Wesleyan is perimeter size of being all about 6362 is starting to have an adverse effect on Whitfield Academy's smaller guards lurking at the line.
Chris Loveless is going to check in.
And this is the first sighting we've seen in a while.
Chris Lovelace, the senior point guard for Whitfield Academy.
What I like what he was doing when he wasn't in the game.
He was talking to the young guys, talking to Washington, trying to keep their heads in there, showing him some stuff on the floor.
That's a leader right there.
You know, I'm wondering if they're arresting him a little bit in the first half so he can be able to play the entire second half.
That's a good point on that deal.
And there is Lovelace on the drive and he's fouled inside the 2 seconds to go Nice play by coach Johnson getting in in the game if he's hurt and he can move that fast Holy smokes 34 point second personnel and Shane Smith you take a look at the stat line for Chris Lovelace senior point guard Cole coming off the bench.
Well, that's been the story of the game, the inability to knock down free throws on both teams despite their Wesleyan gets the rebound.
And I can probably take a shot.
Cameron Lemmons will check in as Whitfield Academy will set up their press, albeit 2 seconds to go.
Carver lets it go and we are at halftime with Wesleyan Wolves, leading by a point 24 to 23 over defending state single-A champion Ridgefield Academy Wolf Pack and Scott Kozlowski is standing by with Skip.
Now the only coach.
You've got a one point lead at halftime.
Assess your team's first half performance and tell me what you're going to do just at halftime.
Well, I think defensively, you know, we've got the game we want.
We've done a fantastic job of defending them.
We're just going to knock down some free throws.
We make free throws.
I'm really disappointed in our job at free throw line.
We all have a ten or 12 point lead right now.
And you know, those are the things you got to do.
Everything at this level, we're doing things, but we got to just finish the job and make some free throws.
Sun is a hope.
We've got them in some foul trouble.
Maybe that'll pay off later on down the road.
But you know, defensively, I can't ask a whole lot more for my kids.
And we do have the game we want right now.
So great Coach, thanks a lot and good luck in the second half drop.
All right.
Thank you, Scott.
We're at halftime in the boys state championship game, Wesleyan up by a point.
I like to movement.
Movement?
You like give it.
Thanks for watching the basketball action here on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
We're going to have the second half of the game coming up in just a bit.
I am Jon Nelson, the host of Prep Sports Plus here on GPB, alongside my tag team partner and more talented basketball star.
The elevator from dictator Herb White.
And we are going to talk about why folks need to be MVP's of Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Well, simply because if you want to see more great basketball players like Maya moore, Kwami Brown, Dwight Howard, Lewis, Williams, Thompson, Humphries and all the great teams that we've seen over the last 15 years, there's only one way to do it because if Georgia Public Broadcasting does not continue to do these games, they're going to get spread out amongst who knows who.
And you're going to see games at all times of the day.
You're going to see maybe tape delay games.
It's like it was 15 years ago.
So Georgia high school sports deserves more.
They deserve what we're doing for them.
And the only way we're going to keep doing that is with these guys help.
And that's the way to do it.
You know, you talk about basic membership and you talk about all the different levels that you can be an MVP for Gp-B.
And here's how you do it.
Basic membership, 25 and $35.
And you can do that by checking that number right there at the bottom of your screen and doing it on our secure server.
B Dawg $35 level is basic.
It's a one time thing.
If you're a student, a senior, a member of the military, it's $25.
But we also have some thank you's associated with the basketball championships that you're seeing right now here on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
At the $35 level, there's your foldable stadium cushion for your foldable sport of choice.
Doesn't have to be just football.
It can be whatever sports you want.
Go ahead and take it with you Indoors or outdoors has a GPB logo.

Continue to show your support for the only statewide voice that Georgia Public Broadcasting has, and you've got to do it.
This is the time to do it.
Herb Right here.
GPB You know, you may guessed this, I do probably my best work on the other side of the camera.
Jon That's probably evident because, you know, my job is to raise corporate dollars for Georgia Public Broadcasting for our programing.
And let's face it, we have some great corporate partners that work with us on our high school sports.
And I don't need to tell everybody who they are.
They'll be able to see them during the games, but only between the games and between the quarters because we do not interrupt our programing for commercials.
So thank our public support our corporate supporters when you get the chance.
These guys don't even run the hard commercials like they'd be able to run on commercial or cable television.
They run spots talking their support for their communities.
And that's why they're involved in this.
They're involved to help these because they have kids, they have families, they have people involved in these games just like you do.
So if you're sitting there in your living room or in your den and you're enjoying these games on Georgia Public Broadcasting, there's only one way to say thank you for us for having these games available to you, and that's by going to your phone.
Becoming a member of Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Use a credit card.
Don't forget 24 seven you can go to WW GPB Dawg and become a member of Georgia Public Broadcasting 24 seven.
And we urge you to do that.
There's no more important factor in this equation than you out there, so realize that it's time to do it.
John All right, one more time.
Let's go through the thank you very, very quickly.
$35 level.
Once again, this is a one time investment in Georgia Public Broadcasting.
It's the foldable stadium question with your GPB logo.
Next step up the ladder at the $75 level, a little over $6 a month on average that you roll up blanket for your investment in Georgia Public broadcasting.
Then the combos $125 level logo, thermos stadium cushion, roll a blanket.
Then the his and hers are years and years at the one $75 level two logo, the two foldable stadium cushions in the blanket.
John You see a lot of spin in politics and television, but this is not one of the places.
This is the truth.
I don't know how you do this.

And welcome back to the boys class single day state championship game Wesleyan leading by a point.
And Phil Hansen as we check out the highlights from the first half, really no rhythm to this game, but there's been some good shooting outside in inside.
But the Cotton has had a great first half for Whitfield Academy.
Nice shot by working there for Wesleyan, got his feet set, knocked that down, and Collins had a great first half.
He has he's been able to score at will when he's got the ball Nice reverse layup there in this shot right at the quarter break when he hit that five uncontested shots Nice three pointer there and this was a great pass by Cavour off the tee.
Once he gets his feet set in the corner, count it tight.
He came off strong off the bench again, a nice play.
Cotton moves so well about the ball is positioned himself to get open Nice back down by Backman post it high And that's his game right there for Kennard back then And then Mr. Furkan got hot Great pass though by Griffin Sham and Furkan.
When he gets his feet set he can stroke that all day long.
You're half time stats and field pretty even some of the free throw shooting has been pretty bad.
That's the telltale sign of the game.
And both teams easily got just better than 50%.
They've got to improve on that.
And Scott Koslowski is standing by with Tyronne Johnson.
Coach Johnson, you find yourself down by one at halftime.
What did you tell your kids at the break?
Well, I mean, offensively, all of our offensive sets, defensively, regardless of what defense we've been in, we've been extremely timid, timid and timid in action.
So it's going to, you know, for us to really recapture this league going to have to play like.
WHITFIELD And we've not done that yet.
All right.
Best of luck in the second half.
That's Jill Hansen.
I'm wondering if Tyronne Johnson had the fire and brimstone speech because they just got out here for the for the second half a few seconds ago.
He may have had to, you know, rearrange the furniture a little bit in the locker room, so to speak, feel the pain.
Definitely.
And but having love was not in the game as senior point guard, Most of that first half has an effect on your defensive tempo.
Watch him try to pick it up and watch their defense.
Try to create their offensive rhythm.
What about Wesley?
Well, Wesley, I just think needs a little more ball movement on offense to get more into their sets in close and then they can get the shots they want.
Little high low exit as Bradley hits the three Great pass though by Smith Excellent Inside out action list Lovelace you'll need to see significant minutes in this second half as Cotton or Gaines misses Oh and there's cotton with the follow that's what Whitfield Academy's got to get that triumphant, very nice defensive pressure cause the walk they've got to get that triumphant back then gains in cotton going get them into the mix offensively obviously it's going to be huge with Lovelace back in the game to pick up that intensity.
Definitely he's going to set the tempo both offensively and defensively because he's the quarterback and the captain on the floor.
You don't expect Jonas Blackmon to hit a three first look favored of force Lovelace off that he'll there's back then on the elbow Lovelace cotton who's been hot all game and he's called on the offensive foul Well that's a tough break for whistle academy but I did like the patience they showed on offense that would be his third Yeah it's tough for personal foul on to Felton who has been the offense so far for Winfield Academy and there's Griffin Sham taking that charge and he had two fouls so that was another he's a riverboat gambler.
How does that change the dynamic with cotton out in the game?
Definitely.
I mean, that's a huge score.
Their mix now they can sag more on Pacman Wesley and can defensively Sharp will take that baseline Oh what a move but denied by Kenneth Gaines and there's a nice defensive play by 14 Wesley in has got great length defensively what I mean by that their wingspan they're taut they're longer than they are tall so they don't have to contest is far to go out as far because they're able to make up that ground with their length and their arms.
So they're always getting a hand and a deflection in the passing lane.
And on defense, they're just a scrappy bunch was back then.
And so he hasn't been able to get on track inside game tonight there is solid won't for the rebound champ with the rebound Wesley is doing a good job of making Whitfield shoot without the backboard so it's a tougher shot to make Shane Smith takes the baseline and he's he can't hit and here comes Whitfield on the run Now this pace favors Griffin to get inside the fact that back then as a slot away by Tarver Wesley was physical I mean they're quicker than you think they are and they're tough they're like a little something on defense that was a turnover and the reason they got that walk call Wesley and did is they were able to make Batman post lower than he likes to post.
So when he drops step he shuffle his feet.
Well, Pacman has not posted a lot, a whole lot on.
The block, it's been mainly on the elbow that's kind of taking around his brain.
Definitely.
Oh, look wide open.
35 of them will take the baseline.
Great pass.
The Smith can't convert it's too easy for Wesley and runs that looking ladder play to perfection Lovelace driving and he'll draw the foul might be on champ that's the missing piece right there with this low ways out in the first half that's drive penetration but you can even tell by their tempo and their speed of the game in the second half is light years than it was in the first half.
And they're going up and down, you know, back and forth like fireflies.
Lovelace, a senior five nine and eight points in the semifinal against Wilcox, telling a perfect trip to allowing yourself to score.
Now you can set your defense pressure.
There's Carver on the drive dish out to plant and Brantley shuffled his feet a little quick.
Don't you always want a bounce step and then fill in the blank bounce step, pass, bounce, step, shot, bounce, step, hop.
You can put it whatever you want after that, but you always want to bounce the ball first.
Eight, seven.
The turnover count for keeping it in the in the single digits.
We are live from the Macon Coliseum in Macon, Georgia, the classic Boise State championship game.
John Wilkinson, Phil Hansen, Scott last year with his second of six ballgames right here on GPB.
There's love for that penetrate shot not there.
And Shane Smith commanding the boards.
Lovelace on Carver and Taylor with a floater Oh back rims it There's Smith underneath Nice stick back there by Smith as a shot though that would feel one of them Wesley to take a run and one hander like Avery.
There's games it's not there sharp with the board has it knocked away by game to poke in the eye as well Stay with Wesleyan as Ty Teague checks in the ball game.
When you get that rebound, you got to get it out of there because if you hold it and bring it down, that's what's to happen.
They're going to come and get you like a pack of wolves.
Teague Checking in for fucking the look opposite it.
Look down low two on one for Wesley and and Sharp will take it all the way and draw the foul even though he got the ball he had Brantley wide open for the backside layup and again against that pressure John just like we saw in the first ball game today you've got to look to score now he made an open layup right there?
If you're the opposite post where Brantley was never face the ball, always point your toe to the top of the box and catch it.
Go straight up.
If you face it, you're going to have to turn four points, four rebounds for the senior champ has a championship rings and two years ago, led by that guy stepping out of the way, was a guy That's a trip to the line for Griffin champ.
We got to turn around four point lead those core driving Smith trying to draw the charge and does the floor is going pull that ball back out even if he makes that shot John there's nobody down there to rebound.
You got back in at the top of the key.
He had nobody down there and you go running in there one on four relentless full court press about Winfield Academy.
You look up as they go.
You know, the key of that press is to force teams in the bad decisions.
But this Wesleyan team is Carver on the dribble that guys like Dylan Smith fouled and will go to the line.
He's made two huge offensive rebounds off of four shots by Wesley come in They're picking up the garbage, so to speak, and finish in the play by the three.
So what I like about this, he doesn't stop playing if you look at the width of the Kennedy players are all kind of standing up.
He's continuing to go north and south following the ball Timeout called on the floor with Wesleyan up 33 to 27 here in the boys state championship game.
As we go to break here and make it well, we're going to stay here at the Macon Coliseum.
Obviously, the momentum is shifting toward Wesley.
What's Wesleyan doing right now?
They've taken the game and now they've made it more of a halfcourt game.
What they've done on two quickness shots.
Smith has come in there and got two sticks backs that were monstrous because there weren't great shots by Wesley, a running one hander by Carver.
Another quick shot by the Wesleyan team.
And then here comes Smith crashing the backside and getting now the 23. plays for Shane Smith, Off has been outstanding.
Just a sophomore, six three.
There's his numbers for the day, five points, five rebounds back then with the rebound, there's games cutoff they're trying to find back then on the cut score try to get it inside the Thornton now Backman and the baseline drive by Gaines is nice down there by Smith There's Carver with it that's Hammond Thornton applying the pressure see but with cotton on the bench for Whitfield Academy they're having to post Thornton and that's not going to hurt Wes Wesleyan.
Teague kicks it back out.
The nice catch saves it relentless pressure by Gaines for a sample drive and he's the backboard and Gaines with the rebound Skorton leading the break.
Batman will slow it down, posting a back bench tonight by Shirking and another turnover by Whitfield That's Taylor with an oh, helping on the knee great great court vision by cable Excellent job nice finish by Perkins and Lovelace's foul tipped up Looks like champ got him.
Oh no that's not going to help that he'll at the finish my thought about Wesley and his press.
You know they want to force you into bad decisions.
Well, Wesleyan, you know, they've made some smart decisions when they're under the gun.
So definitely you got to finish against the press.
You don't want to take quick shots.
You got to score against that press.
So they're not coming out of it.

And welcome back to the Macon Coliseum in Macon, Georgia.
Well, you want to chat live during the game, join the conversation and all weekend at GPB Dawgs Basketball and go beyond the behind the scenes on championship games all weekend long on Twitter and use the hashtag can GPB final five Jon Wilkerson Sean Hansen Scott Kelly somebody back here defensively Thornton just wreak was there from the Macon Coliseum pressure backcourt pressure about Whitfield No problem for the Wesleyan Wolves champ with a great fake and a great spin the blocked by Thornton they're going to call him on the foul chant does a great job of using his body as a shield for the ball.
So you're always reaching and following him and he gets to the basket.
An uncanny effort to get into the basket.
A great skill with that.
Always look in the drive he has got to and gets the chance.
Very deceptive first step and call the foul on Kenneth Gaines his second I'm sorry his fourth.
It's like Coach Johnson's going to wait to the fourth quarter to get Cotton back into the ballgame.
You got Cotton and Gaines, each with four fouls, two significant scores for this team as well.
You're right.
The free throw woes continue for Wesleyan.
Coach Mattingly's going to want to walk down the interstate if they keep missing free throws, it's going to drive him crazy, Champ.
19 points, seven rebounds, four assists against Providence Christian in the quarterfinal.
He's been in double figures throughout this tournament at defending state champion Whitfield Academy Wolfpack down by eight Blessing's doing a great job in the post defensively record in front and every time that they got Taylor there with the body that's three fouls on him they can't lose him You know he's got to be smart no ticky tack Richie Rich fouls watch the ball side dive again Taylor got to play 32 minutes back then thought about it at the court Wesleyan is doing a great job of pushing back and further and further from the basket.
James trying to fight for a position offensive foul call on game.
That's the first charge he takes.
The charge that brought the windshield Academy bench up and that's number five.
They just worn the benches.
They have to sit down.
That's it.
Now it's his fourth personal foul that's talking champ with an open look passed it up.
WHITFIELD In a man to man defense just came out Nice pass pass to Shane Smith nice finish by Smith.
It's a ten point Wesleyan lead.
Now.
WHITFIELD Academy does not need to Oh great pick by Carver There's a lot of time Still got a corner to go to Smith turnover Mansfield Academy will get possession back They did a great job Whitfield cam he did was the trap when the ball can't see you So when Smith took the ball and spun when the ball can see and the offside defender came in with the double team which caused the turnover, that's called here's back then Inside hasn't been able to get open looks in the block.
Washington This is everything.
Ty Teague With the rebound Wesleyan had four field goals in the first half.
They got five this quarter.
Nice crossover move by Smith Nice pass help the look not there for Ty Teague and great pass but knocked away by Lovelace and Lovelace recovers tries to get the shot knocks over Griffin Sharp and they'll call the foul I think he took a shot to the chops there John knocked out his mouthpiece takes a standing up gets back in the game may have been a little low for the charge but he took it He took a shot.
But once the game gets going up and down, this favors Winfield Academy so much and they haven't had those opportunities throughout the game.
Wesleyan has done a good job denying Winfield a chance to run.
Oh, Lovelace, one of two.
And their champ.
He may be battling a little bit, but he's still going to mix it up.
He's a tough kid.
Oh, my goodness.
Another turnover and Thornton battling with sharp nice play by champ running that down with the turnover Fergie knocks it out of bounds That was a huge play John by champ run in that Whitfield Academy player down and scores Thornton has a score yeah that's a huge play and then a four point swing for Lovelace sat out most of the first half for that hill injury He's played all the second half.
Gordon can hit back man and Teague rip battling and here's Lovelace for him the loose ball driving and Smith with the boards Get it out there Good quarter by Wesleyan and the quarter ends well that's Wesleyan with a nine point lead as we head in the fourth quarter in a single-A Boise State championship game here on GPB, DVDs of today's game can be purchased at GHC 4424 95 plus tax plus 595 shipping and handling the broadcast.

Hey.
Hey.
I don't think so.
Yes.
When I was a kid, you wouldn't do it there.
So don't do it here.
Sportsmanship.
It's up to you.
What jerk?
This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station, serving all of Georgia.
Welcome back to the Macon Coliseum.
Wesleyan Wolves by nine as we start the fourth quarter and wait for the academy has been collecting fouls in this game.
We've got three players, each with four personal fouls in the game to kill cotton.
Kenneth Gaines and Jordan Cooper.
As you take a look at those that graphic, there's Gaines with his four, obviously.
WHITFIELD To push the tempo in this game.
Yes, that's an understatement.
They have got to get the tempo going.
They must finish plays when they take the ball to the basket.
And last but least they have to attack the basket.
They've got to get Wesleyan in foul trouble.
I would add a fourth thing, too, because Tyrone Johnson said this team needs to rule the glass and that really hasn't been the case today as Lovelace is inside.
Oh, my goodness.
And that's his border.
I believe that's his fourth as well.
Well, that change the dynamic of West Carver commits number five, definitely.
Even with number four, he's got to be real smart.
He can't put so much ball pressure defensively and got to pick and choose when he can penetrate the paint.
That's a great point.
Oh, there's a great pass inside.
Two points for tackle cotton.
They got to get him going inside.
He was a big reason why.
WHITFIELD was in the game in the first half, and in fact, Whitfield only had six points in the third quarter.
He only scored one field goal.
We feel Academy is going to value the ball, make their free throws, meets your passes.
You can fucking double team the turnover back bench all alone with the ball in the net.
Oh my head hurts champ with two wolfpack players on him fucking all alone.
John.
That's a five point play too.
You don't get on the dunk and on the other end and cotton on all the way back.
Oh my goodness.
It's frenetic.
That's what we talked about earlier.
Whitfield Academy has got to attack the bucket.
Griffin Schantz, the senior leader, again, they have to value these possessions, as you said, self, Fergie, another three.
Oh, my gosh, he picked the right time.
He done with four three pointers.
This game.
Cotton This is an off start, not there back then with the board and he's packed inside You know you don't want to foul him there however you don't want to give him up the easy layup.
So now he's got to go to the stripe to make the two points.
And Wesleyan has luxury.
They only have five team fouls, so they had one foul to give their third found.
Shane Smith back then, a 60% percent shooter from the line.
The last two points for Wesley in rebounds is going to have to be huge here with 621 to go and then they've got to be disciplined.
They got to be able to run their sets under duress.
Batman's favorite subject in school is European history.
Like Star, the past shapes the present.
Well, he's hoping he in the Whitfield Academy Wolfpack make history in this game with back to back state championships.
We're down by ten here at the boys state championship game you're at the Mickey Coliseum in Macon, Georgia.
Ever wonder how the Masters came to be in Augusta?
Here's a hint.
General Sherman played a role.
Watch Augusta's Master Plan A GPB Original Easter Sunday, April 4th at 8 p.m. right here on GPB.
It's television worth sharing.
Well, Whitfield obviously applied the pressure play up tempo game going and seems to have paid some dividends definitely because that's the way they play as coach.
Johnson came in out of halftime said they're playing Whitfield lights, so to speak.
They're not getting after it like we saw in the semi a tie up Wesleyan will retain possession.
Chris Lovelace took a shot to the elbow and they heads so did Ty Teague.
Teague is down Well you hate to see that happen both teams going for it all the fourth quarter the state championship game and you hate to see someone get hurt at this point of the game he's got to come out at least a play here Carter Brantley will come in for Wesleyan and he didn't got mail right in the bridge of the nose.
Look at those two fighting for the ball.
Yeah.
Oh, that's a lot.
Wildly stays in the game.
Ask him where he is.
Looks like Teague got the worst of the deal.
Lovelace On paper that's going to good match up to watch in the second half 30 is a two in a row from three point range and his pass is knocked out of bounds by cotton.
Again, the baseline was an open.
The drive probably wasn't needed in game change Smith in back looking for a pick for 13 and there's a turnover he kills that play in the floor No kick it back out there's Lovelace Kafer on him try to get inside the backfield and position Little baby hook won't fall now bounce back to Wesleyan You know that was a good shot where you wanted to get black back up where he got it on the block there.
Wesley is doing a good job of forcing him middle every time he gets it, so he's taking the backboard out of play.
It's a tougher shot turn in the middle as opposed to turning back to the baseline.
In fact, he's been a non-factor in the offensive boards and that's timeout Wesleyan is Taylor was trapped inside the Wesleyan.
It was a little slower getting into what they wanted to run there the time out by coach didn't want the turnover.
Well Andrew fucking has been an outstanding three point shooter and there's the first one in the second half.
Well, if you're Whitfield Kenny, you got to know where he is.
I mean, he's made what, five for the game?
I mean, you got to understand that this kid can shoot if his feet are set.
So you got to always be cognizant of where he is on the floor.
Skip Mandel, he told me Friday that somebody has got to guard him, that you can't not account for Andrew fucking and he's burned.
Whitfield At least four or five times with a three pointer.
There he is, 15 points, four of seven from three point range.
Fergie is just a junior.
He was seven for eight in the second round.
And he's making, you know, a lot of straight shooter.
In other words, he can make shots when it really doesn't matter.
He makes them big time opportunities.
Fergie, thank you.
Andrew fucking his fifth three point in the game one place on the drive and he's fouled and so I might be behavior See I think Wesleyan can have a tough time guarding Whitfield Academy If the Whitfield players take it right to the basket, they're either going to get fouled or score and score and get fouled.
Andrew Fergie, you know, he's been straight shooting.
There's his fifth.
He likes that corner.
Get him off that spot If you're Whitfield Academy making the run to the other side you streaky shooters Andrew Fergie Lovelace with a solid perfect trip to the free throw line And there's that pressure we all know we talk about how smart Leslie has played.
This is the perfect example, not making bad decisions under this question.
I like the fact how Sharpe is always open.
He has a great he's always moving and always finds that open spots in the press offensive, foul on camera.
And that's number five.
They've going to see if Teague is able to go again.
So that happens.
That's the fifth personal Foul West cable that just killed Winfield's break.
Now Coach Towns is not going like that.
So a six foot senior West Carver, like the quarterback of this Wesleyan team, will sit on the bench and watch the rest of the way the next 5 minutes.
And that's going to really change the dynamics.
Definitely, Sharpe is going to have to bring up the ball, favors the type that Coach Miller said has to play 32 minutes.
Winfield needs to get some baskets here to get back in this game, and Chris Lovelace may have jumpstarted north and south.
They're going to be in good shape with Will Academy Just keep attacking the basket.
He's 11 champ.
His foul.
You don't want to do that.
No one to throw the ball at the goal.
Blake Griffin chants from a warrior out here for hands.
I'm telling you, he's going to have to keep the ball in his hands now for the next 4 minutes and 36 seconds.
Missed the first and the second of six basketball games here on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Earlier, we saw the Wesley Lady Wolves win Girls state championship game and the boys could pull off this victory, the big free throw, John Wesley.
And we'll sweep the class.
single-A Boys and Girls State championships will be the first school in Georgia.
High school history to do it twice.
Later today, Columbia has a chance to pull off the double kill cotton in a basket inside and the foul that on Gaines you might be right now would not be good for Litchfield Academy because there's a ton Kenneth Gaines that'll be his fifth and I'm back and it'll be called on Keenan Backman.
That's his third personal foul in a tenuous situation, being Whitfield with their big horses, all with 3 to 4 fouls.
Well, you got three players for Whitfield Academy with four fouls, Jordan four to kill Cotton and Kenneth Gaines back then.
Now with 313 can hit the fun ends nine point lead Still a lot of time John A lot of time just to make it happen.
There's a great pass inside the games that's.
The point I made earlier, you don't want to try to block that shot.
Just keep your hands straight up.
Make him elevate over you in score by found him.
Now you're putting him in line for a three point play.
Let's the clock stops.
Now they're able to eat into your lead with no time elapsing Timeout called by Wesley to settle down That's clearly the moment has now shifted to Whitfield and that layup by Gaines is really got the the momentum and everything sliding their way.
Well you're right John and now that gets Gaines back into the game.
Well again we talked about the dual state championships, Wesleyan doing it in 2008, Southwest, Atlanta Christian back in 2006.
And if you take a look at the list there, keep in mind, Wesleyan has a chance to do it again and they'll be the first school in Georgia to do it twice.
An impressive list of basketball teams there that have performed the double look at Stillson in 1952, in Class C, the first to do it.
So where were you in 1952?
Nowhere near was I. I was a thought back in the 200 set shot era.
All right.
Now, Wesleyan, all.
Don't ever adjust to this change in tempo.
What are they got to do?
Well, right now they've got a slow down.
Number one.
Two, they got to bring the ball up strong.
They can't play tentative.
They still have to play north and south in move without the basketball.
They can't sit there and make tentative passes and throw the ball horizontally.
Everything has got to be on an angle towards the basket and make Whitfield defend.
Well, we're done here.
It's the girls to a championship game effort in Vidalia.
Standing by for that one.
And Gaines the three point play champ has to be the ball handler now with West came around the game it was a great job by Washington on to keep this vibe between the opponent the ball and look at sharp offensive foul Yeah yeah Kenneth Gaines stood in there, took the charge That's his fourth straight.
His fourth foul on Griffin champ.
I may have to look at that one again.
Lord of Mercy Lovelace Washington not great working break knocked down by Fergie and there's Teague Teague He has a clear mind thanks at home a perky with a great rebounding as excellent pass to the open Teague down low Here's Lovelace over the games games Look at the drive he commits the foul Wesley stops no foul and Kenneth Gaines they are a tough basketball team First you talk about a bunch of blue collar workers.
My goodness there's a chance there.
Shane Smith getting punished and it cost Kenneth Gaines.
He'll sit on the bench and watch the rest of this game and a turnover.
And that's Lovelace Lovelace looking to score and does they can't guard him foul line it down and if you're a point guard and you take the ball to the basket, you must produce points from foul line and downs.
Defending state champion Whitfield Academy not ready to give up the trophy just yet.
This is a heavyweight contest right here.
Two proud teams.
When a meteor passes, stalking any way, travel and they're going to play a lot of pressure and talking here in the final 3 minutes.
Well, definitely they're not going to let him get open to get his feet, set it rain down another three.
They've got to keep calm, though, and not rush on the offensive end of the floor.
That being Wesley with feel.
Now I'm going to be patient.
Look for that good shot.
Maybe get back Ben in the block.
He's yet to get the ball on the block in this game Washington for three another great pass out another rebound he'll lead the break the turkey the thorn on him Nice hand but Furkan did a nice job there he used the rim to block the defenders hand.
Excellent job.
Oh, Andrew fucking is unconscious.
He may be the MVP of the game.
Washington and a layup Clinton hit.
And here's Lovelace second chance for Whitfield spin shot won't go no nothing to tie Teague with the rebound two and a half to go in the state championship game in classic away now they got a pass and move pass and cut Don't stay in which Smith was battling out on him in the frontcourt was moved by Shane Smith It's a ten point lead now Whitfield Can't panic look to go inside and get a quick basket or let Loveless go one on five, so to speak, from the foul line.
And it stopped and yet at the two minute mark and now we're seeing Academy's lack of thinking about quick sides although there was a foul by Shane Smith and not what you want there no, not defensively but offensively.
Good play by Whitfield again and again you know look to post back men or let Loveless penetrate and have him penetrate on the side of back when they have back and slide and they're going to have the offside layup some big free throws for the junior.
It's the kind of role now Coach Johnson's in a little bit of a predicament here.
A He's going to have to try to get quick steals and he's not in the foul mode just yet due to the fact that if he does, he doesn't have a lot of guys to file number one in being there, he's in the double bonus.
Whitfield's going to be sitting with no pressure.
I mean Wesley in that is oh Lovelace picks up the loose ball.
The thing about it too is Wesley he's got some excellent free throw shooters, so it's kind of a double edged sword there for Whitfield Academy champ.
Nice pass.
69% free throw shooter Paul beautiful nice play by Grant was 30 for three that may have done it Andrew Fucking great play by Brantley seven three pointers for this junior and a foul inside That's the last thing you want to do if you're Wesley you do not want a foul because what a great play by Brantley had an open layup, kicked it back out for rookie knocks down the shot Give it to your hot man now if you're Wesley and you don't want a foul here, John.
Now the clock's not running to kill Cotton.
Who's been the main scoring options this day for Whitfield Academy knocks down the first free throw one of two on that trip.
And Shane Smith, how many rebounds we've got?
I was thinking the same thing, Wesley, and really rebounds.
Well Well, I know time is the ally.
The clock is the ally for Wesleyan as Brother Brantley shuffle his feet.
But you don't need that.
You're not going to get anything off that baseline drive, kick the ball back out and run some time.
There's Lovelace on the drive.
No, over the back nine back then on Shane Smith and that'll be four on.
Come on, Berkman.
See, this is what I alluded to earlier.
Now Whitfield Academy is may have to get to the point where they have to go for a quick steal and foul.
But in the flipside of that, the flip side of the coin is that Wesleyan comes down now can shoot the double bonus in fouls in the first one.
The pressure won't be so great.
Shane Smith at the line right.
That was huge, big shot fake free throws into a 11 point lead.
Now you don't win a quick three right here.
Get any inside or dribble penetration, go to the basket.
Oh, the Wolf fans feel it.
Another state championship here in making Washington numb and rebound by Ty Teague there.
Now they're going to have to find take it the turnover and Teague is fouled in the back court see by phone by taking the quick three there John now you're playing behind the power guard because if you don't make it now you have to fall, which then in turn puts Wesley and back on the line with not with no pressure due to the fact that you got beer in the double bonus, take the ball to the basket.
If not, you can be playing behind the power curve all night long.
And what a trip to make.
And this is going to be for the Wesleyan Wolves.
Earlier we saw the lady wolves win their seventh state championship.
The boys can win their second in school history.
You got to knock down your free throws.
But again, Woodfield Academy, the defending state champions, are not going to go down easily.
They're a team that can put up points in a hurry and get back defensively.
And Washington hits the it's the basket, you know, you got all you got looking at steal Oh there's a steal by Lovelace his three goes five six points for Whitfield academy and they'll call time out Chris Lovelace he's played in three state championship games for Whitfield Academy He lost his freshman year last year.
His junior year, he won the state championship and he wants another one down by nine is what Philip Hammond was Tyrone Johnson saying that Hudl I mean, he's saying right now, guys, we got to get a quick steal right now, defend everything, face, guard everything.
And if they don't, we don't get the quick steal.
We got a foul immediately, which then overturn will put Wesleyan on the line.
And then if Wesley makes one or two or whatever they've got to come down, get it inside quick, you still got a whole heck of a lot of time with 31 seconds to go.
And whatever you do on the defensive end deny Andrew fucking.
He's got 14 points this quarter, 24 total.
And if I'm Wesleyan the biggest thing he said let's get the ball inbounds right now.
Don't pass the ball to the corners because now you've got the baseline the sideline act as a defender Post up Schempp right there and shift that wide body has done has really helped him as far as receiving those inbound and the ball poked away by Thorne and here's Lovelace with the layup Oh he can't hit him sharp with the rebound.
Oh, that's a dagger right there.
15 seconds to go They really feeling it The wolves pass it out you get a foul, you got a foul and fucking is fouled and help roll for it Andrew Fucking what a game he's had and he'll go to the line to seal the state championship for the Wolves.
Well Griffin Champ has done a nice job of playing the point guard position when Carter went out of the game with the five fouls in this kid on the line.
My goodness.
Six for nine from three point range.
Holy smokes.
How fitting he'd be on the line at the end of the game.
That's pretty neat.
Well, it's never been done before.
A team sweeping the state championships twice.
It'll be done today.
The Wesleyan Wolves are the state championship.
Great game, John.
Coached by two great coaches, Coach Johnson, and excellent job.
So did Coach Mattingly.
That's super, super game.
I got to clear some space in the trophy case because.
They're bringing back two state championships.
The Wesleyan Wolves are.
We're going to take a break and celebrate with the wolves when we come back here.
And it got my friend eBay presents Augusta's master plan, the 100 year march, General Sherman, to a man with a dream.

John, I'm here with Coach Beverly.
Tell me what this state championship means here.
Well, it's it's a terrific thing.
And, you know, once again, the way we did it went to overcome some adversity.
We lost our point guard with 5 minutes left against one of the best pressured that man to man defensive teams we've seen Griffin, Andrew Fucking and the other guys stepped up.
We were able to attack their pressure and actually make some shots and score, so that was huge for us.
Well, congratulations, coach.
Go enjoy it, John.
Thank you.

It's a double by Wesleyan.
The girls won it and now the boys have won it.
