Clear the runway.
He's coming in.
It's a slam to pull out from three.
You watch this guy go back to the.
We welcome you to the Macon Coliseum game two of championship weekend on Saturday.
And you see the Athens Christian Eagles and Whitfield Academy, two Wolfpack coming in from people that plays single-A championship here on the great GPB.
We say good afternoon to you, Jill Tyree and my buddy, my partner in crime, Herb White.
And Herb, you made the drive down.
I'm glad to see you got here.
Got up very early this morning and made the drive down.
I didn't have to watch much of the Bulldogs last night because that game was over in a hurry.
I wouldn't want to watch that either.
That was the future at the of course, Georgia going down to Vanderbilt.
But we have a great ballgame here.
We have a UGA signee and Kenny Gaines, who plays for Woodfield Academy and on the other side, the kids coming in from the home, the capital of the Bulldog Nation, Athens, Christian.
And of course they have a great player in their own right.
But we look at the map getting here to make it at least two teams.
And first of all, Winfield Academy, they got here and of course run it down towards Herb and how they got here.
Well, they took out Heber Christian, 65 to 13, if you can believe that.
So that's pretty good defense that night.
Saint Francis, they also took care of 542, had a little tougher time with the closeness of Augusta and then the Lanier County, another pretty good club they beat by 13.
So, you know, there are very, very athletic teams.
And of course, Athens Christian, their road in Macon.
And you see how they've been able to get here as well.
And what an outstanding job Ryan Lake has done for that program and the 770 victories in the course.
He brings an end to a championship game this afternoon.
So we have a great match up here on GPB and we're glad to have you with us.
It's game two and of course, Wesleyan, the girls capped things off, started things off here.
We had a great time last night in Duluth and we saw Champions Crown there.
And we're going to see some more crown here today.
We're going to take a look at the Star for Winfield right now.
Take us through Kenny Gaines, an unbelievable performer right now.
Yeah, Kenny Gaines six three or six four, and he does everything for Whitfield Academy.
He can really take it to the basket and he can either score or if you come to him, he can dish it off and give it to somebody else.
He's a very creative offensive player.
And of course, on the other side, I've been Christian.
They have the big fella.
And he's not only a great rebounder, but he's a great shot blocker.
It's six foot eight added to the University of South Carolina, upstate in the form of Zach Lillard.
Yeah, Zach is a guy they're going to have to really count on tonight against this athletic Woodfield Academy team.
He's going to have to hold his own inside and he's really gonna have to stay out of foul trouble.
If they lose him, they're going to be hurt.
Yesterday we spent the day with Lindsey theory and today we say hello.
Good afternoon to the lovely Nikki Noto.
Nikki, how are you doing?
Doing great, Gil.
Good afternoon to you guys as well.
I had the opportunity to catch up with Whitfield coach Tyronn Johnson before the game.
He told me that the key to this game, it's going to come down to mental toughness.
And, you know, this is something also worth noting to our GPP production crew.
He told me that he is so grateful to be here in the championship game.
He was very taken back about everything going on.
He reminded me that these kids, guys, they're 15, 16, 17 years old.
Many of them will not be playing another basketball game after this, but some will be advancing to the next level.
He says there's just a special raw innocence in these championship games.
I know this is our second game.
We have four more to go.
I hope you guys are ready to watch the basketball.
All right.
Already we're going to fencing off the seat belt and we say thank you to Nikki.
Putting it in prime perspective here today, Tip off straight ahead.
The single-A state championship game live relation here on a great GPB It'll be Athens Christian against Woodfield Academy.
Still to come, we'll be right back after these important messages.

For 28 years, if Mr. Tom said no state legislation didn't pass, Tom Murphy was born in 1924 in Bremen and graduated from North Georgia College.
He fought in the Pacific for the US Navy in World War Two, then went to yoga law school.
Murphy entered the legislature in 1961.
He was floor leader for Governor Maddox, and in 1973 the Democrats elected him Speaker of the House.
He served in that post 28 years longer than anybody in any state assembly in the nation.
Murphy was a throwback to an earlier breed of politician, rarely without his big Stetson and his big stogies.
He played hardball under the gold dome.
Laws passed with a nod of his head or failed without it.
But the shifting political tide that swept Democrats out of office in 2002 took Murphy with it.
He was defeated after 41 years in office with eight governors.

Today in Georgia history, Dawg.
Back here live at the Macon center, Brooks coliseum, we take a look at the starting lineup here tonight.
And of course the USA state championships in single-A.
We take a look for a look at Winfield Academy.
Everything goes through Kenny Gaines and of course, their head coach, Tyrone Johnson, an outstanding job he's done.
And you see him right there in the center of the huddle, 302 wins, 663 losses.
And right now bringing him in with a solid 28 and three mark.
On the other side, we'll take a look at Athens Christian and everything goes through there.
Great center, Zach Lilly really like Will Jackson nicknamed Turtle.
More on that story as we get through this basketball game.
And of course, we've talked about Lauren Lake, Ryan Link, the great years at Lakeside de Camp and also coach store John Nelson, coach Johnny and J.V.
Baseball had some great stories with him and just a wonderful guy.
I had a chance to spend some time with him and the Eagles right now getting it done.
They've won 24 in a row and they hail from Region eight.
And of course, the Whitfield Academy hailing from reading on their eighth final, I should say, for Woodfield Academy, their fourth in ten years.
They'll jump it up right now.
And Athens Christian controls the tap and going right up with it and losing it was London.
And then they'll start the big four, which really kind of going through the middle.
That's to take it and it gets the layup just like that.
Whitfield Academy up to nil but Coach Link was expecting Whitfield Academy to press him so he has to have his team ready for that result over on the right side to Turtle Jackson and a turnover for the ball just like that goes back over the Whitfield Academy early on here in the single-A state championship game at this center plex making Coliseum deal.
Tyree, along with Herbalife, we're glad to have you with us on this outstanding Saturday afternoon on the right side and going down a little as you see right there the excellent recognition and spotting up for a jumper and knocking it down was the great senior Kenny game.
So Athens Academy Christian usually likes to play man to man defense but Coach Blake and his staff didn't think they could match up with him.
So they starting out in the zone.
We'll see how long they can stay in it.
If Whitfield can hit those jumpers, Turtle Jackson getting by Pickett and he misses with the rebound is for Woodfield Academy is Lockett ahead to Jordan corps over the right side again back out some fake it for nothing Woodfield Academy over some Christian early on here they go down low and they play inside in the middle right there What's up Lorenzo Carter now the game two drives and it was partially blocked and knocked out of bounds by Zach Lewis.
So the Wolfpack will regain possession and they'll trigger the inbounds and that's Lockett Lockett looking for gains but goes outside now to lock it down a load of games and they fail to connect so a little bit hard pass there you saw Kenny Gaines a moment ago that's what he's going to try to do.
He's going to put it on the floor and try to attack that rim and either score himself or dish off.
So he's quite an athletic basketball player.
Reese being hounded by Lockett over on the right side and certainly Jackson, not a risk.
Stop driving, hanging, giving down low to Lilly and it rolls up and in so touch by the big fella to man basketball a couple of seniors has been doing it together quite a while after his first and with their first points of the night for the two in this basketball game.
Great crowd here in Macon and we're glad to have you with us here on the Great GPB this afternoon.
Jalen, pick it up top and you see Athens Christian there tucked back in that zone.
Right now they get that 3 to 3 man front trying to keep the ball from going into the middle here.
Game's over.
The core boards guarded by Reese up.
They look for games, on the other hand, but they got become lightning quick in the fact that somebody told me he could do that alley oop like Travis Leslie.
Now I believe him.
a62 ballgame right now.
The Wolf pack, the Woodfield Academy out in front of the Eagles of Athens, Christian at Turtle Jackson getting cut off back outside to Zach Lillard.
The airball taken down by Gaines who triggers to break a hit to the hole.
I'm going strong with it and he's down here They're going to get Zach Reese up for the pack Let's check in Kenny Gaines getting up on the alley oop again.
Watch it back, George Perfect play Great.
Two footed power leap in there.
You saw it up top here as I looked down low.
We saw a lot of that with Zach Johnson last night, which sent some people throwing him down the last couple of days.
Most definitely.
Eric Lockett making the first of two free throws.
What did anybody say?
Why they call?
Well, Jackson Turtle, because he's anything but a turtle when he's out on the floor.
Well, I'll tell you about the story.
Name by his mama.
And it all goes back to when Turtle was in the womb.
They had a sonogram and the sonogram came out and he looked like a turtle.
And that's how his mom came up with the name.
That's according to head coach Ron Lake.
So there you have the story.
How will Jackson got the name of a turtle?
They also have a few wolves on the roster, so they want to differentiate.
That's the aforementioned Turtle Jackson down low intended for Adrian Blunden knocked out of bounds is turtle right there you see what doesn't have anything to do with his basketball game.
I figured that out by watching him the other day.
He's anything but a turtle on the court, just a freshman.
So it's going to be a great one.
And outstanding prospect though tricky to inbounds happens Christian but it's stolen away by Gage running the point gives it in transition and the lay in right there with Jordan for 22 right now Whitfield academy out in front three stop towns it drives pass goes straight to the rack makes that play nice move by Zach recent up and down game would field academy games and it does not go but he's hacked Greece off with a nice crossover took it to the rack and put it down and they're going to have to handle that pressure because Whitfield Academy is coming out and really bothering them when they cross half court with that man to man.
Pressure.
Second foul for reset courtesy of reset courtesy of our statistician here today, Devin Bowen.
Jalen Pickett brings it out.
Top goes to core who gets a at the head of the horn Athens Christian remaining in that zone as Herb White talked about earlier they go to games over the right side to core and they telegraph a pass almost stolen away by Takeru.
So the Wolfpack will regain possession and they'll inbound it sideline right pay a six foot guard just came in the ballgame to replace very stoplights Take it to the inbounds go to core who gave it back to Baker for the right side He struggles with it and it goes out of bounds.
The turnover.
So the ball will go back to Athens.
Christian, let's take a break with the score.
Whitfield Academy up by six 1040 1010 to 4 in this basketball game, under four to go at the end of the first quarter.

I'm falling all Monday at 730 on GPB.
Back here in Macon, you see the score which the academy on top of Athens Christian ten for.
Well, that's Georgia outdoors From inside your living room you'll be able to cozy up with the bats and frogs and hang out with the beach, with the sea turtles and kayak down the great rivers here in the great state of Georgia.
Get wild with Sharon Collins.
The nature clutch Georgia outdoors on the great GPB.
A stunning show.
Very stunning.
And it's a fave of our one Herbalife.
You love that.
You know, I love that show.
We get a little wild here in the Macon Coliseum.
The Whitfield Academy fans and Whitfield is out for two lead on the boards.
But what's cost in Athens, Christian right now is the turnovers in Whitfield's been able to cash in on two or three of those it's Demetrius McWhorter in the ball game now for Athens, Georgia.
You see take a route over to Atrium London and fumbled it and went out of bounds and a turnover but it was all for Whitfield players.
So.
WHITFIELD Academy players.
So Athens Christian will regain possession.
Carruth will trigger the inbounds going up against Gaines.
They get it in that's Turtle Jacksonville working against Gerald Rynders and the jump shot right there is good That's a big time move there between the legs and the defender's face for the pull up jumper.
Nice move by Turtle Jackson.
That'll make it a ten six ballgame Now the Eagles looking for over on the right side is Braylon Phillips looking for a man in spots up top Jordan caught in the corner is by the jump hook inside and connecting right there was Eric Lockett got to make it 12 six are good patients by Whitfield academy their three or four passes found they open in the middle and that's what you try to do.
Against his own group trying to get by, Gaines finds Turtle Jackson at high.
He tries to move around.
Brendan's struggling with the basketball is Turtle Jackson and we have a whistle and a foul.
The foul is on 2022 50 to go with the opening quarter here, making her turtles going to get to here and he's going to have to create some offense right now for the Athens Christian because he got Reese up over there on the bench and he's one of their big stories.
So Turtle is going to take it on himself for a few minutes.
Turtle makes the first one coming in the ball game for Whitfield Academy.
Lorenzo Carter and Kaitlyn Pickett returns to the line.
You know, I thought Nikki made some really good points as a color commentator.
Sometimes you get a little carried away and get critical at some of these high school kids.
When you call in the game.
But you do need to keep that in the mind because they're giving it their all.
And you're right, it may be the last game they ever play in 12 eight lead Woodfield Academy enjoy in its opening quarter here with the ball as gains and spin move up and in Nice move in the lane Kenneth Gaines Love this kid Herb him Yeah he's at 6364.
He can play inside at the next level He's got all the moves in the leaping ability to do it.
He has six points now, struggling with the basketball with 30.
Jackson still on the floor would feel like happening with it here on the bus, down, spinning in the lane and going up stronger than that though coming over the top.
Lorenzo Carter missed it and James was there to stop it threw one and by the look at this watch, Kenny Gaines here, hangs in there, just catches it and brings it around.
That's just beautiful.
That's a look up high.
This is what you saw in your living room.
Wow.
He actually cut that ball, then brought it back about a foot, got it under control and rammed it down through and Mark Fox has got to be enjoying this game.
If he's watching one more look at what this is incredible.
And don't forget, we're talking about a63 player.
So just a pleasure to watch.
And Kenny's actually got a pretty nice touch from outside.
He just hasn't had to display it so far tonight.
Him at in and out you he's on the bench right now with a well-deserved rest turtle Jackson across the time line Ruff gets inside and the nice runner by turtle Jackson 16 to 10 now Brookfield academy out in front negotiating on the right side That's cool And the ball knocked out of bounds by Carew right in front of the Athens Christian bench.
And Zachary Soft continues to sit on the bench over there when they're good scores.
I'm no surprise for Athens Christian going up on the baseline and missing the jumper right here but Woodfield Academy was blocking and the turnover by Athens Christian off the total Jackson So again the wolfpack with an opportunity to increase their lead the great defense and you see the struggle right their offense but the turnovers are really hurting Athens Christian right now and every time they turn it over, just about good Field Academy manages to get two off of it.
So they cut down the turnovers they can get back in this ballgame.
Easier said than done with the team, with the quickness and athletic ability of Whitfield And that was the concern of Coach Link coming in.
He said, Gil, we got to beat this press because they can turn it up a notch and that's what they're doing.
You see the turnovers right now, 5 to 2 in this basketball game total.
Jackson sees the opening goes through and links it up with a nice move by Turtle.
Jackson hits that one about three feet from off the rim on the top of the board and got it to drop through and put on quite a show right now as a frosh Athens Christian down four under a minute to go here in the opening quarter in pulling up baseline and knocking it down is Jordan core.
It makes it an 1812 ballgame Whitfield academy out in front Jackson across the time tries to get by picking backs up and looking to set the screen for him is the big fella Zach Lilly.
The ball that's Jackson still with the basketball all through his legs and still holding on to it.
35 ticks for the ball stolen away by the aforementioned Kenny game and the open floor drop hangs and he's fouled by Jackson.
Well that was an ill advised pass by Jackson then trying to throw the pass under the basket from out near half court.
No chance of that gets through.
Then he compounded it.
That's the first foul on Turtle Jackson.
We see what he does on the offensive end drives away and all that's good over the defender and it rolls and drops I believe that was James he put it over no easy task.
And don't forget, just the freshman games on the line made the first one.
Kenny Gaines.
Right.
A physical looking athlete, isn't he?
You ought to see Herb White just truly excel in going up their offense.
The Bulldog Mason makes the second of two make it a 2012 in the Lehigh Valley and the 30 in the opening quarter.
Glad to have you with us here on the single championship Woodfield Academy in Athens.
Christian a three ball look at it go 20 to 15 now.
Turtle coming out of his shell here tonight.
No doubt about it.
Gil.
Yes, he is an Athens Christian hanging around now.
They are hanging around and they trailed by 520 to 15 under five to go game for a three pointer.
No good, 12 on the floor.
And that's going to wrap up what has been a very entertaining opening quarter here in making the single-A state championship game between Whitfield Academy and Athens Christian.
Still more to come from Aiken on the great GPB.
We'll be right back after these very important messages broadcast of this program is made possible in part by the following regions.

Back here and make them feel Tyree and her wife.
You get a look at the cheerleaders of the ABC Nation coming over from Athens and Athens virtual right now trailing left field by the count of 2214.
It's barely any game show right now along with Turtle Jackson Boy.
Well, there you see the versatility, Kenny Gaines from downtown and then the alley oop for the slam home so he can do it all And of course games with 80 turtle Jackson right now with 11 creating his own shot and getting it done it will be a nice athletic move to the hold it there we talked about turtle was going to have to take over this game with Reese to pick it up his second foul and having to go to the bench.
One of the big scorers for Athens Christian.
So so Turtle, Will Jackson is taking up the slack right now that rendered in Baghdad right in front of us to Jordan for the start of the second quarter.
Whitfield Academy with the basketball the Wolfpack, big time games on the right side.
He goes out, tough to render it.
He goes over to Core, who has a basketball right now.
There's days excellent ball movement by the Wolfpack spotting up for a three like there was no good for by games with the by AC three so struggling with it goes up top the turtle Jackson they look down low and the ball tinted right there stolen away from Adrian London had a free transition for Whitfield academy and puts and runs on the other end 22 to 15.
Athens Christian has been effective in the zone defense when they play the half court but they keep turning the ball over.
That's where Whitfield's really taking advantage of it and getting out on the break.
We saw with the basketball, you see the field goes work out and police are turning to Steve and stops along with Kevin Barnes and put up on the screen for you 649 here until halftime and of course Mark Harmon and Jackie Burton standing by for another one of their great halftime shows in between the haves here they make it and the single state championship game right now seven point lead enjoyed by would feel like out of it battle Jackson working against Kirk Lockett with little shaken baby move shake and take move Beathard up goes over the wrist up Who drives head fake pulls up and does not get the roll and the rebound control by James and spotted for a foul was recent soft if that three stop that's his third Yeah that was not a smart play by Richard to pick up his third foul of course coach Link was gambling and he's got to be upset with that just the reach in after the rebound and that's really going to hurt.
WHITFIELD There.
Of course, the time line right now for Whitfield Academy is called.
He goes over the right side the game and go inside and move it inside the lane.
And following up his own best, it goes Eric Lockett, 24 to 15.
Now, it was sweet starting to balloon for Whitfield Academy over A.C instead of Jackson getting across the time line being guarded right now by Eric Lockett, Jackson drives hangs off glass no good the rebound controlled by rendered render ahead to cool for drives the lane scoops it up and at one well again bad defense back Athens Christian not getting back quick enough in court took advantage of it and it's going to be very tough if will Jackson's the only offensive weapon for Athens Christian.
So they're going to have to get something out of their big man.
Down below that, here we see the replay and you just got to stop that ball coming down the floor.
Nobody's Mathis Christian.
He went right down the middle.
So I think Zach will he's going to have to make some contributions in the pivot.
They haven't gone to him in there and with Rosoff out, somebody else has got to step up.
There you go.
Hard way to make the lead now 12 And you saw an animated Ron Lincoln He was told Herman I that he was concerned about that dribble penetration You saw him right there in court Whitfield academy right now the Seminole run and they lead by 1227 to 15 under six to go.
That's Jackson spotting up for a three ball no go.
But we'll talk with the rebound and struggling with it, his gains and he throws it off and they playing in the person of Demetrius McWhorter smart play by Gaines who was in traffic and in trouble and was able to get a bailout 512 here until halftime, 27 to 15.
You see this play great camera work in your living room, look out.
Gary Peacock, our fine cameraman, took a shot doing a football season.
Did on the basketball season.
Lorenzo Carter in his lens that's a spot up three by James no good.
And it goes out of bounds and the ball will go over to A.C.. Herb, what do you see right now?
So Gary Peacock, you got to say, been doing this as long as I've been doing it, and he's one of the great ones in the business and he really always takes one to his ability.
And here's Will Jackson out trying to push again.
Right?
And he drives, decides to pull out and he gives over to London the ball stolen away a transition opportunity for Whitfield academy drop into the lane and giving for the short jump shot and getting in the lane was Eric Lockett there's Jackson double team but gets by drives the baseline goes up and the ball is rejected by Lorenzo Carter and that'll keep you.
I would feel a cavalry bust up the center of the lane right back Eric Lockett down low of glass and the follow up there by Gaines and there's a whistle outstanding officiating crew here this afternoon Don Smoky Nicky Morgan and Derrick Taylor there to call the action for you some substitutions in right now for both A.C. Let's see that block by Lorenzo Carter down the other end six nine sophomore Oh, that was games actually to get exactly excuse me, Lorenzo Carter doing a great job on Lilly, the senior for Athens Christian who has it.
I don't believe he's got two points here.
This game is called for the offensive chants that just ran over Malik Sims, who entered the basketball game.
So Ball will go over to A.C. Hopkins Christian trailing in this basketball game 29 to 15 four and some change as we approach halftime.
Will Turtles Jackson handling the basketball well the Eagles of Athens Christian they go over to Lilly Lilly struggles down the lane and we have a whistle.
Herb It's very important for A.C. to be able to get into some type of rhythm offensive.
Yeah, I don't care how goodwill Jackson is.
He can't do it all himself, that's for sure.
All right.
Let's take a timeout with the score.
2915 Whitfield Academy 14 ahead of Athens.
Christian we'll be right back after these very important messages.
You're in a great job.

I do believe Herb like we're heading into the pigskin.
You're going to be ready Well let's finish up with round ball first.
We got to see a few champions yet to be crowned.
And this is Ron Link's worst night.
More Gil nightmare Gil because he knew coming in was going to be very difficult to score against this aggressive Whitfield defense.
And now he's he's lost one of his top scores in SAC receivers early in this ballgame, and he's going to have to sit the rest of his half.
So Whitfield's going to have to try to keep this thing within striking distance somehow, maybe not let this lead get any further and hope that when they get reset back in the second half, they can figure out a way to put some more points up.
Whitfield Academy right now on an Otto run in this quarter 13 three one overall, an opportunity for Willie to stop that and he does with the free throw so that makes it 2916 game right now we're at the 358 mark as you mentioned earlier.
Clearly an outstanding rebounder and shot blocker.
They don't usually look at him for a lot of scoring, but he's going to have to step it up a little bit while they need him right now.
Willie made the second of two free throws 29 to 17 Whitfield Academy.
Look at basketball in the lead right now.
Think it over the right side giving it to fourth Poole working against the league since man to man defense they've come out of that zone.
Yeah it's games with the basketball working against turtle Jackson drives baseline scoops and banks it up and in and what he's almost impossible to stop one on one watch him with this nice strong baseline move Oh the hesitation and the leaping ability put it right over the six eight lily That's pure athleticism.
I mean, able to get around the defender in the person of Turtle Jackson and then having the presence of mind to get it over top of Lilly and knocking it down.
And the opportunity now to complete a three point play, 31 to 17 now 30 to 17 ballgame.
Whitfield Academy out in front Turtle Jackson avoids the steal gets it through finds Willie down low spins and is rejected by Lorenzo Carter but a foul on the play for Blake.
Well they went to Lilly that time and thinking the same thing we are Will Jackson can't do it all by himself the nice pass by Jackson Lorenzo Carter got a lot of ball but he might let's see if he got him with the lower body.
So Lilly will again go to the line as you take a look at the replay and I can't say enough about our great folks at GPB on it all night last night at in Duluth at the Arena Gwinnett Center and on it today, I made the trip down from Duluth here to make it.
And we're working to bring you the best of high school basketball here.
The great state of Georgia, 32 to 19.
Zach Early with four points from the free throw line.
I got to feed him some more.
He's a smart guy.
He's a senior.
He's got a sophomore guarding him.
He can outsmart him down low and draw the foul.
And they need some of that time.
WHITFIELD Academy with the basketball.
They go down on that dump down and turn around by Jackson gets an only rebound excuse me not Jackson Gaines gets his own rebound and and it's foul again just the ability to just really do his thing it will play well He's got those great quick leaping ability.
As soon as he hits the floor, he's able to go right back up just from a standstill.
And when you can do that, you're going to be a great offensive rebounder.
And he's also a nice free throw shooter as well.
And he is a tough coach.
He's just the post poster board download.
Just a reminder to all of our fans of high school basketball here in Georgia to go online right now because we have interviews with Lewis Williams and also actually Meeks and Dwight Howard.
Their memories is archived on the GPB sports lines.
It's a turnaround jumper by Willie No Good.
And getting it, Caruth decided not to shoot, but hands it to Jackson who spots up a three no good and the rebound was by quarter and a foul 34 to 19 Whitfield academy out in front but you know you talk about those great memories in an opportunity to talk to you know Jodie Meeks and also Lewis Williams and Dwight Howard and Dwight Howard told me to.
Gill, I remember coming down here, we had four cracks at it at Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy.
We only got one.
But I do believe that we are doing great things in the NBA right now with the Orlando Magic.
Certainly is.
And I and Lewis Williams and Meeks both playing for Philadelphia, is having a heck of a season this year.
The good the 76 track Lewis Williams plays of South Gwinnett and coach Fleetwood over there and Mike Mercer, Batman and Robin Tandem.
What's up with that?
The comets on the map and then you go over with more and Judy Nix Yeah and one of the big disappointments in Lewis Williams signing with adversity at Georgia and then deciding to go professional.
Exactly.
You can't fault him for that Boy, it's been great to head him for a year or two in Athens, no question.
And the former coach of Georgia, Dennis Felt, was very disappointed about that because he a really juggernaut with the free throws made by by Carter make it a 3619 game and we have a stoppage in play.
I can't say for sure, Gil, but say they offered me several million dollars income.
Go ahead and go down there and see the free throw numbers.
Pretty good free throw shooting numbers today on the afternoon.
Excellent.
Like last night.
Excellent Free throws for both teams there.
And Whitfield getting more free throws because of Kenny Gaines ability to take the ball to the rack.
And of course, the Wolfpack at Woodfield Academy out of Mapleton, their eighth final, their fourth in ten years.
And carrying a banner for regional and of course Athens Christian carrying the banner for Region eight.
Glad to have you with us here on GPB this afternoon.
So we've doubled up in the corner Brad's baseline goals and goals and hands to James Howell, who is able to connect who just entered the basketball game 36 to 21, now a 15 point lead.
But when you look at me, that's gaze looking baseline goes up in the air, tries to jump right over Willie and we have a whistle and James will again go to the line.
Well really he really had his hands on him from the time Gaines got the ball all the way down and it's got to be a bad feeling for that six eight, only to be one on one with Kenny Gaines his fourth foul, too.
And he will go right to the bench.
Fourth foul from the.
Oh, man, that's yeah, yeah.
That's a bad, bad situation for them right now.
The game's first opportunity connects.
It's now 37 to 21.
Really shaking his head, but you can't complain about that.
There was no doubt he was mugging games from the time he made his first move.
Gaines seven for seven from the charity stripe.
You see it right there on your screen, an opportunity to go eight three.
And he does.
It's now a 3821 ballgame, but he's starting to get out of hand here.
Turtle Jackson goes over to Adrian, one little start up in the ball, stolen away by Winfield Academy.
We go the other way.
That's game for the trigger.
He goes up and the handoff to and Pickett like a jump pass and a whistle Devin over the back to and it's also Lindsay fouls and Lockett that's his second so Jackson Tracy gets the ball time he struggles able to get it over to the half now back to Jackson working against people and the ball almost stolen away Don't think it was very aggressive defensively playing a mano a mano yeah.
WHITFIELD Best man man defense I think I've seen this year really getting out there after he cannot hold the ball.
As soon as you catch a pass, you have got to be looking to get rid of that thing.
Are they going to double team you?
They're up in your grill.
That's the second foul on Pickett.
He immediately goes to the bench.
Go sit down.
Tyrell Johnson should come over and talk to me.
Oh 38 to 22 See the aforementioned Tyrone Johnson talking to is one of his outstanding point guards and Jordan Court.
Well, when you saw those scores leading up to this game, when you can hold the team to 13 and 20 something, you knew Whitfield was going to be a bear defensively getting a shot left with Drummond on a plus status game.
The dunk contest should have been held here in Macon, but we're going to get Zach Johnson to come down and steal Johnson to come down and go with Kenny Gaines.
I think we two had one that had the fans fired up.
That's Turtle Jackson launching a three, and it's been a highlight reel all afternoon long.
So for this one is the one hander from way out.
And if you're Mark Fox, you've got to be excited because this is what's coming to Athens right in your living room.
You know, what's about Kenny Gaines is when a guy like that takes advantage of his his ability to get to the hoop, he can make the free throw.
So many of the guys you see they can take it, drive to the hoop, make the athletic move, and they get fouled all the time.
They go to the line, they can't convert.
But he is a heck of a free throw shooting coming in the ballgame.
Matt Olsen, who plays Kenny, gave Wakefield Academy with the big lead by 16 over the right side as Randall went to almost gets the ball stolen away by cruise it's live and it goes back to render it goes inside the court who drives and misses a shot by Eric Lockett 42 to 24 the lead 18.
We're under a minute until halftime and again Mark Harmon and company standing by to bring it to you.
Diving on the floor was Olsen Fluid Burns Deluxe and there's still aggressive right now the wolf pack from labeled it would feel academy with a big lead down here in Macon over Athens Christian a long three by cruise does not go off the bus down and running it is Lockett down the lane hanging in the air but the shot is blocked out of bounds.
You're going to get the offensive foul, a third foul for Lockett who is clearly playing out of control.
You just barrel into the defender 42 to 2435 seconds to go in this one 2 to 3 quarter court.
Trapp is really giving Athens Christian some problems.
That's Turtle Jackson going inside the ball loose and put forward and scrambling for it.
Lorenzo Carter comes up with it for Woodfield Academy but we have a foul on the play so we'll march down the other way.
We missed and it's John McWhorter, his second.
Well, I like Turtle Jackson's vision.
He sees the court very well.
He's made some nice passes.
He got the man in the middle of the floor.
Then he couldn't hold on to the ball.
When you catch that ball against Whitfield, you better be ready because they're going to come after you slap.
And so you got to really go and get it.
Lorenzo Carter with an opportunity to extend the Wolfpack lead.
First one up and good 43 to 24.
Now the lead at 19 and approaching the 20 point Mark Lorenzo Carter fine looking six nine sophomore and Tyrone Johnson got some stuff over there moving the second one no good rebound control by up and stretching almost stolen away and the guy's not over close does diving for loose that the loose basketball all and it's out of bounds off of A.C. and Woodfield Academy will have possession with about 15 ticks to go until halftime.
I'm going to take you through the mind of a head full throttle link right now.
What do you tell your guys at halftime?
Well, you say, listen, we're going to have to play.
Our two guys have been sitting on the bench.
We knew it was going to be tough going in, but we can't play with two of our better players on the bench.
So you guys got to go back out there and you've got to play without fouling.
Broke through Zach Reese up and Zach Lilly and it's up to the No question.
Yeah, I know to play against the team is athletic in Whitfield It's tough not to pick up fouls because you got to go after it hard so the coach link is up against it in Athens.
Christian no doubt about you brought up a great point of foul trouble, but also the the ability to create dribble penetration at will, which by the story here pretty much many storylines for the first half you got a shot of Tyrone Johnson and of course his team right now with a 19 point lead under 10 seconds to go as they get into the offensive set.
That's game spotting an air ball with the rebound.
3 to 1 launches a bomb at the buzzer.
It does not go so right now, although halftime score, 43 to 24.
WHITFIELD out in front of Athens Christian and you see Ron Linke, the head coach of A.C. not happy right now.
Let's go over it.
And Nikki Nadeau is standing by with the outstanding coach of the Wolfpack, Tyrone Johnson.
Nikki, it's all yours.
Despite Athens Christian's high shooting percentage, we even see the lead change in this ballgame since your Wolfpack took the first bucket.
What's work for you?
The first half?
Oh, we're doing a pretty good job of cleaning up the defensive glass.
It's no secret.
Our philosophy is to eliminate you to one bad shot.
Number 30 got off real early, and so we made a defensive adjustment, put a little bit more length on him, which made him shoot some difficult shots.
And we'll continue to do that.
But it all come back down to rebounding ball defensively.
We done a good job with that.
All right, Coach, good luck on second half.
Mark, It's time for our halftime show.
Georgia You are absolutely right, Nikki.
It's time for the GPB halftime show.
It's coming up in just a second.
We'll hear from officials from both of the high schools.
We'll see what fans are talking about online chatting.
It up with Jackie, Brett and we'll have first half highlights and starts with Beal Academy, the Wolfpack and Atlanta Christian battling out for supremacy and class boys a single.

It's the final stage of the game, and it's also time for Jane to choose the door.
Help her out, Dawson.
She pick.
All right, So, Jane, which door did you choose?
I think I'm going to go with door number two.
Door number.
Oh, wait a minute.
It looks like it says right here that you never graduated high school, so none of these doors are available to you.
That's it for a chance of a lifetime.
We'll see you next time.

We're going to win the adventure prize because we believe everybody in our product saves lives and we are live in Macon, Georgia.
We are at halftime of the Boys single-A state championship game between Winfield Academy and Athens.
Christian joining us now, the headmaster of Athens Christian Academy, Steve Cummings.
Thanks for coming on with us.
Well, thanks for having me.
Tell us what it's been like at school this week because it's got to be very exciting for a school to have a team make the Final Four and then, of course, make the championship game.
Well, it's been a fantastic environment around our school really for about two weeks, and it's just kept kept on rolling.
So we've had a great time.
We brought a lot of student busses.
We've had a very hard time getting any schoolwork done at all, but that's okay.
Well, you know, you were telling me you took over for your dad as headmaster at the school.
Talk about some of the projects you guys have going on there.
Well, we we've had a great year.
Our enrollment is as large as it's been in the history of the school, so we're busting at the seams.
We really need to build another building.
So I have a lot of people at me saying, we need this, we need this, we need this, and we need this in the building.
So I don't know.
We're going to we're going to do the best we can, but we hope to have a new performing arts center in a couple of years and possibly a new gym and certainly some new classroom space.
So a lot of things happening at Athens, Christian.
Okay.
We have a question for you as Principal Burrows, Headmaster, it's know you're creatures of the night.
Now, take a look at this.
What is that?
The clues.
Our lives in Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, West, Chile and the Caribbean.
It's been called everything from a sea servant to a real life Loch Ness monster.
What do you think that thing is?
Well, my oldest son loved animals when he was little, so I think that actually looks like a frilled shark.
You are correct.
You know, you're creatures of the deep.
All right.
Congratulations and thanks so much for coming on.
This is good.
Thank you, sir.
All right.
Time now to check in with Jacqui Brennan and see what people are talking about online.
Jacki, thanks, Mark.
Hi, everyone.
Don't forget that you can chat with us all day long at GPB Dawgs Sports.
Let me know where you're watching the game from or who you think is going to take the big championship title.
We're going to be here all day and we've got you covered.
Also, don't forget to participate on our online poll.
Our question, our topic today is about social media on the court after a basketball player at Marshall University was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules, and his team rules included playing on his cell phone while he was benched in the second half.
So we want to know, was suspension too harsh or not?
So we have the results as they stand right now at halftime.
And 80% of you say that you think suspension was appropriate for this kind of behavior.
Only 20% of you, though, say that it was a little bit too harsh.
So be sure to cast your vote right now and keep chatting with us all day long.
A.D. dot org slash sports.
Mark, I'll send it back over to you.
All right, Jacqui, thanks so much.
We now welcome to the program, the principal of Whitfield Academy, Susan Banki, thanks for coming on.
Thank you.
My pleasure.
Well, talk a little about the first half.
You guys have been clicking on all cylinders.
That's right.
I want to congratulate staff and Christians for their great season.
And we're just having a great time today.
And thank you for all that y'all are doing for us.
What was it like in the hallways of school this week knowing that your team had made the Final Four and then, of course, the championship game?
The hallways were very quiet.
We were on spring break this week, but last week it was exciting.
We had our last home game on Wednesday night and the kids were just ready.
It gets exciting as so many families, lower middle school families actually cut their vacation short to come to the game today.
And you've got a big building project going on.
We do the new upper school building.
We'll get it in the fall in August, $11 million with a black box theater, state of the art science labs.
Just exciting time to be at Whitfield Academy.
Boy, it sure is now.
Talk a little bit about some of the other things going on there.
Well, one of the exciting things that Whitfield does is during your junior year, we're very focused on finding students gifts and talents.
And we do an actual program with parents and coaches, counselors and counselors where students are tested for their gifts and talents to help them in deciding what college they're to go to.
We are a college preparatory Christ centered school, so we take that very seriously for our students.
But we have great kids and great teachers, amazing families that Whitfield Academy.
All right.
It's time to see what you know about creatures of the Deep.
Take a look at this.
Here are your clues.
It's equipped with venomous spines capable of delivering painful stings.
They have gracefully flowing fins.
What do you think that thing is?
Know it well.
It's a lionfish.
You are right.
It is a lionfish that boils they're doing it.
And you know you're taking your fish there.
You're creatures of the deep.
That's right.
All right.
Well, thanks very much.
Coming on.
Good luck into the rest of the game.
Thank you.
My pleasure.
All right.
We'll have more coming up right after this.
Time out.
We are at halftime on the halftime show.
Stay with us.

You're watching GPB Television Worth sharing?
We're live in Macon, Georgia.
We're at halftime of the Boys single-A state championship game between Winfield Academy and Athens Christian.
We are getting ready for the second half.
And for that call, we go to my two colleagues, Gil Tyree and Herb White guys.
All right, Marky Mark, thank you.
And of course, right now, Whitfield Academy out in front by 19 and Herb White.
You got to believe that Coach Johnson, who I talked to, our Nicky Noto at halftime, has the feel He is very close right now to bringing another state championship back to me.
Well, yeah, he's very happy with the way his team played, but it takes two halves, so he's going to have those guys playing just as hard.
And I know Coach Link is probably feeling like he's going bear hunt with a switch because he doesn't have two of his better players are over there on the bench beside him.
So it's going to be interesting to see what he does with those guys, with Lilly, with four fouls and Zachary is up with three.
No question about it.
We take a look at the highlights right now and guys are stepping up, particularly when Kenny gave Throw Again.
There you see the three pointer for James, then the slam dunk as we mentioned, he could do it all and he has 19 right now on the open floor off the bus stop and getting it done.
On the other side, you've been impressed with Turtle Jackson.
Will turtle Jackson creating his own shot on the perimeter, then driving the lane and getting the roll and just being able to spot up.
Let's go to Nikki Noto right now is standing by with the head coach of A.C. Bradley.
Nikki.
Thanks, guys.
Right now.
Yes, I am with Coach Lincoln.
Coach, you came into this game saying that you wanted to beat the press.
They're going to see that in the second half.
Your presence.
That's what we worked on all week.
But then we got all these little touch fouls and I just hope it evens up on both ends.
There's nothing but touches and then we get climbed over, grabbed, hold and Jersey, we can't we can't prevent that.
That's going to have to do their job.
You think Coach Johnson saw that that you said that you wanted to beat the press, changed his game plan.
Yeah, we have to like, put a football uniform out.
Where are you going to be in the second half to get a break?
Well, we got everybody in foul trouble.
It we're.
We're in the zone, Jim.
We got everybody involved going.
They're in a band, so we're just going to have to play tougher, I guess.
All right.
Thanks, Coach.
All right.
Thank you.
Thank you.
We take a look at the stats.
Coach Link may be on to something.
He took a look at the free throws and he talked about that would feel the academy herb going more to the line versus Athens Christian and then you know you talked about the foul trouble right now in Lilly and also Reese up and the rebound numbers favoring the Wolfpack from Woodfield Academy.
Well that's the huge difference.
That's one of the big differences the ball games a lot of those are offensive rebounds by Whitfield Academy and Coach Link certainly not happy with the way the foul situation turned out.
And you know you probably got a legitimate point.
He's playing zone the whole first half and Whitfield Academy aggressive man to man yet he's got his guys in foul trouble.
So let's see what happens with Adrian London with the basketball goes down low to rivers and a nice little baseline getting the 16 points seven up here.
The second half, 43 to 26 in the third quarter.
Right now.
WHITFIELD Academy lead now at 17 it goes down low and cut off right was go into the corner and a ball stolen away and taken by Whitfield academy and little Jacksonville running up the floor at a high rate of speed and the other five on the play So nice splash play by the Panthers Christians on the first possession let's watch it really taking the baseline under control puts it up and in it it's not impossible to play a whole half with four fouls.
So just got to play smart On Lili's part.
Jackson four three No good.
Lily tries to get the rebound the ball on the floor routine by the Wolfpack in the open floor was killing Pickett.
He got tied up in wide.
Nice job, Jack Reese up and Will Jackson reach.
And he stopped the drive and gets in to see if if Whitfield Academy tries to take it to Lilly and they can pick up his fifth foul.
So let's keep it down.
That would show the academy will regain possession and Eric Lockett will trigger the inbounds underneath the basket and gets it in And we have a quick foul spotted on the play so they'll try it again.
Lockett gets it and being able to put it down was Winslow Carter the foul on the play was on Demetrius in the quarter that's Jackson drive into the lane to dump off to Lilly and we have a whistle for that We got a little bit of an altercation underneath him really threw the slam dunk down.
Let's see he doesn't even extend his arm on that Brady by pick up the foul.
So he's really being careful the foul on Lorenzo Carter his second and AC will trigger the inbounds and the ball immediately stolen away we go the other way trying to trigger that was Adrian London but they turned it over and knocked out of bounds by sea.
So the Wolfpack will regain possession 45 to 26 here.
The opening of the third quarter for the single-A boys championship.
Just a reminder that Jon Nelson and Shawn Gordon extended through the ICE one championship immediately following our ballgame game here this afternoon.
Well, that's good pressure by crew force to turnover what Athens Chris has got to concentrate on do and Gil is try to get this margin down to maybe ten or 12 points going into the fourth quarter and then he's got a manageable score.
Well, you've always said the first 5 minutes in the second half is critical.
Whitfield Academy forcing the turnovers along the trail and a circuit shot off last was an offensive foul on Gase who forced his way right And that's games His third was played out of control.
Well, I know that turnover that's actually an unforced turnover by the Athens Christian.
Those are the ones they have to eliminate.
Whitfield's got to call some, but you have to take care of that basketball and not help them out.
That's the guru with the spin move by Lilly Drive got the ball rejected by Lockett and knocked out of bounds so he's still good takes possession Athens Christian trailing in this basketball game by 1945 to 26 Great defense in the half to take a look at it here what Lorenzo Carter and lock it in there to help on the really big summer and getting it done the roof gets in an inbounds goes over to Jackson who goes over to restore this up down low to McWhorter to Lilly on the spot a different baseline no good thought by McWhorter saved by the quarter to Lilly to Cruise.
He struggles with it now back out to Lisa three self driving against pick it stops gets the ball rejected right there by Lorenzo Carter and we're going the other way pour over to James who is struggling from baseline back to claw glass follow up and that's by Eric Lockett who got in the lane back the other way is Acy and the ball is rejected and we're going the other way That's games to the whole Kings no good rebound taken by Lilly and we're going the other way by the back is Jackson across the timeline drives gets off to reset spots up for three ball no the airball the quarter with the rebound no good foot for the on the floor and taken by Carter Whitfield academy the other way that's Pickett drive and hanging in the air up and in and count it that's £4,000 I'm really impressed this is a relentless Whitfield Academy tape You talen take it to the hole.
It could have been a no out there.
No call.
It was because it looked it appeared Reese held his ground and was set defensively.
Just a tough, tough call on a kid who's been settled by fouls all afternoon long along with Lillard, they get the opportunity to complete a three point play and he does 50 to 26.
Now the lead swells to 24 biggest lead of the afternoon.
Another 5 minutes to go in the third quarter.
What across the timeline is DeMarcus Evans to Lilly and Caruso really tried to force the entry pass stolen away by Whitfield ahead in traffic it's core in the follow up no good by Lorenzo Carter we're going the other way Lilly in the open floor drives hands and legs it up and in for 18 and that stopped the 701 field run.
Coast to coast for the big man took the rebound off and took it all the way and laid it in pretty impressive for six eight and we talked about DeMarcus Evans is in the ball game right now for ABC.
He had some last game heroics less late game heroics in the game in the win over Turner County He's in there right now He's number two rolling on the floor is taking it and diving in and just a mass of humanity for was in there good quarter in there for AC see to and we had a scrum on the floor Herbalife had one of the three turnovers created by Athens Christian and there is a bunch more of those man substitutions for both of these basketball teams and we're going to take a timeout with the score 5228 Athens Christian trailing by 22.
Let's Galilee trying to get his AC Eagles back in this basketball game.
They've got a long way to go.
We'll be right back and make it after these important messages on GPB basketball high school championships on GPB are made possible in part by the Georgia High School Association, which thanks Georgia Farm Bureau for their support.

It's hard to pick out any one or two things for Whitfield Academy in this ballgame.
It's been kind of total domination.
But, you know, the turnovers are certainly a big thing.
And also the offensive rebounding by Whitfield is just really led to this huge deficit through triggers in time for the Eagles who trail big in this basketball game.
That's the Jets job against core who goes over in the corner and that's DeMarcus Evans a three ball no good rebound controlled by Gaines spinning away a movement finds a man in the corner with the spot up Jumper and Poole decides to pull up and the person as brutal That's cool with the basketball working against Caruso's baseline to drive and get the stoppage in play an offensive foul on Whitfield Academy illegal pick 5852 2850 to 28 in the third quarter 327 to go and Whitfield Academy defense is really tough.
It happens too, for nine on field goals in the third quarter.
WHITFIELD Academy employing some pressure now with the threat Jackson is able to break.
He goes down the lane and loses control.
But we haven't foul.
And it looks like the culprit in the neighborhood was, Eric Lockett.
Colonel Jackson, who had an excellent first half, they started to really concentrate on him in the second half and they've been able to shut him down a little bit.
And I tell you, though if will it will grow, grows another two or three inches.
He's going to be a believable ballplayer.
So that this was his first year.
And Jackson will have an opportunity again at the Charity State, 5228, now 50 to 29.
Jackson with 50 that's number the pass intended over there for Lockett goes out of bounds so he will take over.
Nice overplay by Lilly there of course of the turnovers they overplayed and the low post and again Woodfield Academy going to the top and they took in pressure so try to disrupt that gets over the time line and almost goes to the lane does for the other way drives to the lane against Jackson up and in it's 52 to 29 the lead at 23 the trap again employed by the Wolfpack and we have a stoppage in play and coach link not happy and he's got a good reason to be Will Jackson went up in the air there you saw it That's what happens if you go up in there against that press, you're going to turn it over.
We said that was one of your keys going in and talking to Coach Link.
And I was talking to he was talking Nikki Meadow and Coach Link ain't happy right now, but you have to look at that 1 to 2 trap.
I mean, sure, it's a it's a tough defense, but you got to look as an opportunity to score because if you can make a couple of really good passes where they're supposed to go, then you have a good shot of getting a layup or a short jumper and win for the Academy.
Good control of the boards, 24 to 30 like now, largely in part because Lilly is basically in foul trouble.
He's been saddled with foul trouble all afternoon long and not able to help Casey on the backboard.
Well, and largely in part because Whitfield Academy's got some excellent athletes and great leaders and smart basketball players inside as well.
And, of course, Lilly, coming into this basketball game, one of the rebounders in the state of Georgia and coaching approaching some milestones.
Well, Lilly really doesn't have much help boards with his ATH Academy teammates.
They don't have any size to really help him.
The foul on Pickett is third base he gets it in that's Reese up across the timeline loses it but gets it back to dump down to Lilly working against and the missed shot he was working against Lockett so we got the other way but Field academy drive in the lane and laying it in it's Dryden in the open floor they are lethal and still with that threat Jackson being handed now helmet bye by James and also cool he gets it across the time line trying to avoid playing it out of control launches a three in and out Evans loses the rebound it's taken down by drive to court Oh the nice move around Evans gives it to pick a drive driving baseline is scooped down low to lock it stolen away A.C with the basketball we go the other way to route it stolen away by Lockett Great move to the rack and it Ersan a couple ankle breakers in the last few seconds with those crossover moves I'm going to tell you pretty impressive 56 to 29 the biggest lead of the night now 27 Lilly the alley oop off the feed from recent 56 to 31 the lead at 25 for Woodfield Academy and they mercifully slow it down for a moment.
That's cool working against Caruso over on the left side, the game's driving baseline, the scoop move up no blood Lilly with the rebound and A.C with the basketball and Athens Christian going the other way.
Jackson at the controls working against Pickett drives hangs no good gets his own rebound loses taken away by Dryden spins away sends it ahead to lock it Lockett pulls back and gives it to four Now to take it.
They're going to set it up in the halfcourt set under a minute here in the third quarter drive and with the hanging move wins gains he missed it the rebound and going up and losing it is Lockett the Eagles with the basketball in the open floor play now very sloppy good field academy with it and Luhrmann baseline and laying it up in in but a whistle was Eric Lockett well Lockett had thoughts of slamming that one down but got bumped and he's not a big strong guy so it took him out of his slam dunk.
But he's going to get to the get a shot at run length.
So many great years at Lakeside to jab now trying to find a way to bring a state championship to Athens Christian.
And if they climb this mountain today, that would be their first and it would be definitely historic considering where they are right now in a deep hole of 25 points now, 26 under 40 seconds to go.
Just a reminder coming up at the conclusion when here, but I depart the table here, John Nelson and Shawn Golden standing by to bring you the class to a girls championship.
First time on the year, Millie and and the golden voice of Shawn Golden this afternoon 58 to 31.
That equals our biggest lead this afternoon at 27 and Woodfield Academy has been in the control from start to finish.
Right now they steal the basketball and driving up Pickett and getting up and in no go.
That's Carter still falling forward ball on the floor and he comes out with it off the bus stock is Lilly turning spins hangs in the air and blast but no good but we have a foul play right now out of control And we have a man down for Whitfield Academy and see that number right.
Got to give Lilly and Reese up credit.
They've managed to stay in this ball game with the foul situation and and so they've managed to play smart and stay in the game, although it hasn't shown on the scoreboard, it looks like either Lockett or Dryden being attempted to over there.
It is.
It is Dryden.
So they took an elbow to the to the lower portion of his body and he's getting up and being assisted off.
Correct.
That that's Randall and he'll go over the side and we hope okay yeah I think was shot to the groin as we say so they'll work on them in 58 to 31.
That 27 point lead, Eli Lilly awaits the free throws, the opportunity to cut into that big lead.
Enjoy right now from the guys and maybe he would feel the academy first opportunity up by Lilly is good 58 to 32 now see Lilly's numbers 12 points and Johnny now at 13 with five of six shooting from the charity stripe at the 8 to 33 under 15 to go in the third.
That's who's driving the lead and losing control of the basketball.
It goes out of bounds.
And it looked like it was knocked off of DeMarcus Evans so the wolfpack will regain possession inbounding the ball it's Folsom struggles with it tries the entry pass to Lorenzo Carter still knocked out of bounds so they'll try to do it again but Coach Link has very few things he can do.
He can't press this Whitfield Academy team, especially with your guys in foul trouble.
So all we can hope for is that he could turn the ball over and start converting some shots.
But it's going to be a huge task with 25 down with just one quarter to play.
You just saw Lorenzo Carter discover, everybody turn the ball down.
But they called him for traveling.
And we have a substitution in now for ABC coming the basketball game for Athens Christian as well.
He's Jackson trigger an end to Evans ball stolen away and driving to the rack and lay it up and in and good is Braylon Phillips and that shot pretty much indicative of what Whitfield Academy has been able to do the pressure bothering Athens Christian off the inbounds and you see the lane right there Whitfield academy one quarter away from bringing a state championship back to Maplewood 6233.

Yeah, that's what they're playing for.
Whitfield Academy on the verge of bringing yet another state championship back to Mapleton.
And they lead right now 6233 in the fourth quarter.
One quarter remains as we wrap up things here in the single-A boys state championship game here and make it, let's go to our Nikki Noto.
Nikki, you have an update?
Jill?
I do have an update.
It is an injury update on number 21, Gerald Render.
He just got the wind knocked out of him, guys, and he is expected to return to the game.
You see, move down the bench.
He's doing a few and the trainers told him to breathe deeply.
Take his time.
You'll see him back in this game.
He's a senior.
He wants that championship.
He's a tough kid.
He took this shot to the Lord stories and had us concerned.
But he's good.
Good to hear that news.
And we're about ready to start the fourth and final quarter and the Academy will inbound it through the trigger.
And right in front of us here at the broadcast table at the Macon Coliseum, Gil Tyree, glad to have you with us here on GPB this afternoon.
Our second game of five today going up, but pick it and laying it up and in in traffic over the over Lillie and that'll make it 62 to 33.
Our biggest lead 29 points and frustration right now called for the offensive foul is turtle Jackson Whitfield 23 for 45 from the field that's over 50% in mind and that's because they're shooting a lot of layups and a lot of stick backs off the offensive board.
Athens Academy 12 for 37 and it's a lot you know we saw that creatures of the deep questions for the principals at the breaks and that's what Woodfield Academy is like creatures of the day be the sharks or piranha or They smell that blood in the water and it just inspires them to go even more.
So that's kind of like that.
And boy, it's tough on a team when they get the feeling like that, like 62 to 33 Woodfield Academy struggling with the basketball right now and as well has been able to get it to rise up and get across the timeline.
He is being a raspberry to the turtle.
Jackson Hey they Jackson they're working against Taylor and it goes over the result they look down low in the pass intended over there for Adrian London but it goes out of bounds so the ball will go back over to Woodfield Academy 17th turnover for Athens Christian this afternoon and we talked about it up top.
We can't say it enough they were concerned about that press coach Link told us about it and they have been arrest all afternoon long and a lot of transition points by virtue of that enjoy by Woodfield Academy Getty Games reports back in Whitfield's cat have been sitting for quite a while.
Take it over the games back out now.
They'll run some more clock.
It's for working against Jackson, but we're on the right side.
They look down on the post-up move and that's Carter who goes up and in the follow No good still with the basketball is Whitfield academy still on the loose ball that's core with if he gets it and gets it over right now to lock it and we have a testy exchange it look like Reece up and games right in the middle of the referee's in right there and immediately they call the timeout So cooler heads will prevail here.
Blake, that Coach Johnson was calling for the timeout and I'm not sure why he put Kenny Gaines back in, but it may be because he's a senior and he wants to take him out before the ball game's over so he can be recognized by the fans because of his great career.
So we'll see.
I'll tell you what the press that the token stuff, I mean, you look at, like you said, the press that they would feel the academy has been able to run here today has really disrupted Athens Christian and we talked about the numbers spell it out right there 18 turnovers.
Yeah.
And then I would assume that Whitfield Academy probably scored on two thirds of those turnovers.
I think converted a lot of the points off the transition by virtue of the steals created by the pressure for the right side right now the would fill the academy is called they look inside attendance at quarter but stolen away Robin to the rack as really should be goaltending it's only for Bolton ten the ball was pinned on the on the glass let's take a look at it you make the call Herbalife I had it called on me a lot it was tough to see from that angle but once that ball's on the backboard, if it has started down towards the basket, it is goaltending before his second foul on the afternoon and Lily will be at the line he made the first of two and Coach Link is beside himself.
He agreed with you it's you know we got some footage to tell you what I would like to get up folks you could hear how he had hops.
Hard to believe that's not going on walking around on crutches.
Yeah, but you're doing good.
Thank you.
62 to 35 now.
And we're talking about a high flier that was games Good follow up and missed by Lorenzo Carter.
We're going to be up the other way That's texting the alley oop and send it to Willie but it goes out of bounds and a push of aggressive play by Lilly still he went up block that shot down the other end was looking for the alley oop coming here and you know they want to make some good plays for this ball Game's over no doubt about the foul on London.
Here you see those first one up stopping gains from throwing it down with two and he goes up and blocks that one fake.
It gets an end to Lockett.
The game's dropping the middle hands and the follow up no goal and still there is gains and that is good.
I mean, you had three Wolfpack players in and around the basket and this is the athleticism folks it it's great basketball team there you see games you see Lockett there games right there again great box out the ability they did there and get those thick backs.
Watch the stroke on his free throw it's pure and the quarter that's his fourth and the completion of a three point play right now and the lead is at 30 yards.
Biggest lead of the night games with 22 points.
Jackson being harassed now by Pinkett and double in fact was Lockett driving to the lane was a frustrated turtle Jackson and he is fouled he's a great slashing guard he's got that crossover dribble and explosion he's got to be one of those guys it's another year or two he's going to be able to get a good look at the basket any time he wants it.
He can create his own shot.
He has a length.
Okay.
And you get him in the weight room and all, like you said, some confidence.
And he continues and grows.
Tell you what, there may be another one.
He may not this may not get away from it, but.
Well, they've got around the fence, around Athens, that's for sure.
All in the neighborhood.
You know, the way the kids play in the youth tournaments now.
And all of these things are getting national exposure.
You can't you know, you just can't keep them quiet anymore.
So they're going to know about him.
And if they already do all over the country, no doubt about it.
Weirdo driving back in the game for Woodson Academy, he has a ball going across the timeline, giving it to them.
The spin move by the games.
Are you kidding me?
The rebound right there and going up score with it.
Lorenzo Carter and the Wolfpack still playing like they're down by ten, you know.
Well, that's Kenny game.
That's his game So he's just continue to play it if he's at the ball game and with Georgia lose it Gerald Robinson they're going to be looking for somebody that can take it to the rack and create.
And the game is certainly going to be that guy that is the first thing when I talked about, like I said, when you had a chance to look get up close and personal of when you look at games, what do you see?
He said the same thing.
You just said scoring guy the ability to create his own shot, muscular, typical Georgia player.
What do you see as the bottom of his shoes with great hops and legs looked better, made the first one missed the second.
Really With the rebound, Teresa because the time line against right Rogers hanging in the air puts up a ten foot or no good and knocked out of bounds and over there was games who knocked it out of bounds so the Eagles will regain possession here trailing right now 66 to 37 Jackson with a three in the corner and he got it correct that puts it to 66 to 39.
He had his feet on the line drive gets the ball stolen away regain him but for the pocket getting inside and getting the shot rejected and going over the scores table with great hustle it was Lisa and the quarter was over there as well You're down 27 points with 453 to go and you get two players going over the table to get a loose ball.
That's that's pretty impressive.
You got to say it says a lot for this Athens Christian but still hustling for coach look and steal the inbounds That's pretty up the two man game ahead up and in and out and no good and partially rejected the open floor coach pleading for goaltending once again he's not going to get it Jackson launching a three and it goes out of bounds and play a little erratic right now here Think about what you'd expect you got to see if you're Athens Christian players are starting to feel this the conditioning because they played many guys and then Whitfield Academy has just been relentless all night long.
I mean, it's a struggle to get the ball in and it's a struggle to get it across halfcourt.
And once you cross halfcourt, it's a struggle to score with Lorenzo Carter Spot spot it for the foul his second of the afternoon correct me third.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Kevin Bonds.
Well, a tough day to start with for Athens Christian because he stopped got in foul trouble.
Right.
First two or 3 minutes of the game and had to go to the bench.
And even though Will Jackson stepped up and tried to fill the gap, that was a tough job.
And then their big man really got in foul trouble.
Although I said again, give both those guys credit, they managed to play this entire second half so far without fouling out Lilly put in opportunity number one with an opportunity to make another one.
That's why I don't always agree.
A lot of coaches will take a player out when he gets two fouls in the college game in the first half.
The guy never learns how to play with fouls in that situation and if the back can do that and play smart, it teaches him how to play with fouls and a lot of times that can be very helpful in a lot of situations.
Lilly, nine of 11 from the charity stripe, he missed the second and the rebound was taken down by Whitfield Academy.
They have the ball and a half court and struggling with it is Rodney and both he and Jackson on the floor.
The ultimate possession will go to A.C. Curry and we got to call the foul on number four for yes, you the cadmium on the floor.
And apparently there was a foul spotted there because it too went after the basketball to the side.
But it's not on for its own right.
Jackson the first opportunity up and in he now has 20 so you see the official explaining to coach Johnson what took place what the call was and there was some confusion one of the schools stated exactly what was called him and the explanation right there the coach Johnson in our physician is position with size and physique.
That doesn't invite the coach's question in his call.
James Howell is entered the ball game for Athens Christian to miss in the second the rebound taken down by Lorenzo Carter driving with the basketball over the court the alley oop to D hello 68 to 41 now no fatigue does not seem to be a factor for any Gaines 24 for Kenny games clearly up and him to stop the bleeding 68 to 43 338 to go and you got to believe right now that the the wolfpack can smell it.
Well we could have some interesting SCC games between Auburn and Georgia with Kenny Gaines and Shaq Johnson going up and playing about a foot and a half, two feet above the rim.
But it's a true test of the.
Here you go, sir.
But the great prep talent here in this great oh goodness core and game's able to work that to man game via the alley oop you don't have to be that accurate with an alley oop to Kenny Gaines or Sharjeel Johnson.
If you get anywhere near the basket, it's going to flush Powell out of the ballgame for you see back in his league, since I used to try to get my coach, Ken Roseman at Georgia to throw that out, you know, back in the day and nobody ever done it Boy, didn't know what I was talking about Listening, right?
I tell you what, said you were like an elevator shaft.
You could go up.
You like a pogo stick.
I mean, no disrespect to Joe Caldwell, but, you know, they outlawed the dunk effort in my freshman year because they were afraid I was going to dominate college basketball.
But it was actually because of Kareem Jabbar.
It was Jackson four three off the mark and the rebound taken by Gates.
He pushes at full throttle in the open floor and driving the baseline is drive.
He backs up and Cooper will have it.
Right now, after the pass and render, Toure goes to render the two men game with caught thanks it up and no good tap up no good still there but knocked out of bounds.
Lockett was there for the tap up but it doesn't go.
I tell kids that these days sometimes I bring it up that they outlawed dunk from 1970 or 6867 until 74 and they cannot believe that they actually outlawed the dunk in college basketball.
But it's absolutely true so you got to tell me there's a David Thompson sports record since 1892 or David couldn't dunk he just would catch the ball and drop it down through it and take it puts it in there make it a 7043 game right now Whitfield academy out in front still struggling in the half court it's Athens Christian and they do not get an opportunity and we have an offensive foul against Woodfield Academy who ran right over Will Hayes.
That's for right now that's four for Pickett HAYES coming out of the ballgame and in is receiver and also in right now is John apples he sees his first action of the afternoon Will Jackson is I believe played the entire game if I'm not mistaken you're absolutely correct as a freshman.
That's pretty impressive, Willie, to reach up spots at the three counter to this Christian now down 70 to 46, a 24 point lead enjoyed by Whitfield Academy on the right side right now is rounding out top to Lockett and drive in the lane and going up and having his shot rejected Mr. render off the cut yeah you saw Reese who does have the range and he's a good scorer and you know Spurs should have could have would have but if he stays in the game that first quarter and is able to knock down a couple of those threes and maybe the ball game has a little different tempo and things change but we'll never know now.
Just a reminder coming up at the conclusion of this basketball game, the two eight girls state championship game between we'll have John Nelson and Shawn Gordon for the call and Mark Harmon.
I'm going to have a little brief discussion about as If We Were Ghosts, our documentary Walk Out of Georgia Public is a wonderful thing you guys are doing.
And you know, the culture community in Georgia, step up, We need you.
And wonderful projects.
Put together by Herbalife and a vet cook who's also the vice president of business development.
You guys have done a great job and identified people to be a part of history.
That's What it's all about the airball by Risa.
But we're not going to hold four shots against anybody at this stage when you run it 33 and down 25.
Coach Lake is still coaching and he's done an outstanding job.
And like I said, coach, like the both coaches, Tyrone Johnson and Ron to have been so accommodating to us here at GPB when you needed a question answered and they were always there to give us the information we needed, but we can't thank them enough.
In addition to all the coaches here around, you know, I had an opportunity told you last night I spent an hour with the coach, David Boies, Milton, and he told me this, folks, that was not career wind 599 last night.
It was actually career 601 to win over Savannah.
David Boyd pulled a fast one on us.
He said Gil I wanted to not make it about me and I didn't tell the kids.
Yeah, I didn't tell the kids.
Well, yeah, he didn't want that.
You got a lot to think about with the state championship.
Don't need to be thinking about trying to get the coaches six out win.
And, you know, I wasn't.
That wasn't a derogatory comment about Coach Link still coaching it it just shows you that if you're a great coach you're going to be trying to teach your players all the way to the last second.
I don't care what the score is on the scoreboard.
There's always something to be learned.
This games after the struggle still stays with it and the ball is loose.
And I'll start by saying that's up to the trailer.
Jackson backstop goes over the willies.
He loses the basketball game.
So no look ahead and down the top five Eric Luck.
He has 60 Spider-Man.
That was a pretty good looking and I didn't play here style.
I like that.
So the kids like let's see that one again and watch the little move by my face.
He's in the air on the slam to the open floor and boom in your face.
Her boy, his face was in the rim.
That's his face.
You see the sideline right now, Whitfield Academy.
It's going to be a great drive up 75 and then over to 85 and into Cobb County.
And here's the celebration it's going to be.
And now the clearing, the bench, mass substitutions for Tyrone Johnson, a class act, letting his his reserves get a taste of this.
And Kenny Gaines great career closes out for Whitfield Academy and he's been a great one and hopefully going to be a great one down the road.
Let's give a lot of credit to Athens Christian.
They've battled all night long.
They're still battling with less than a minute to go on the scoreboard.
Eight 3517 on the rebound pretty much tells the story along with the turnovers.
Just a relentless Whitfield team with too many athletes and well coached as well and for Woodfield Academy it'll make it 22 straight victories and of course their eight trip to the big show since oh two and they are getting it done here this afternoon That's Chris Martin who's in the basketball game, struggled with it on the floor and a tie up and the officials have a presence of mind to get right in there real quick.
He and John Echols were on the floor battling for it.
And like you said, there's no quick and Ron Lynch screw.
They're playing until the final, final horn.
Well, I guess he's going to have a confrontation soon he might want to have with Chris Martin.
Number four, he looks like he's going about five for 95, but he's a gamer, a sparkplug that, listen, I'm on TV and I want everybody to see me.
Yes, sir.
Spotting up for three no good.
Right?
There was Evans and still with it his how and we have a whistle to 16 ticks to go to 7348 Whitfield Academy Total domination from start to finish hell looking to get his name indelibly marked in the Scorebook first eight championship game.
What James Howard the Miss.
But you know what, Ron?
Linc has a lot to be excited about because Turtle Jackson is somebody you want to build around.
I mean, he's played outstanding.
You got a good supporting cast to go with him.
You're going to be back.
And speaking of Turtle Jackson, he's going to exit and he's going to get a great applause because he's played by The Wire.
And you really caught your eye.
There he is.
And the emotion of a bridesmaid and it hurts you.
Young man's a competitor, no doubt about it.
But he has nothing to be ashamed of.
He played well here this afternoon, but in a losing cause he's struggling with the basketball was tried and over to Chris Martin and that's going to do it to let the celebration begin for burns and all 7350 Whitfield Academy with the single-A state championship ship here in the great state of Georgia.
You see a game like that at Winfield Academy, a class AA school with just total domination.
The state championship makes you wish that they did have that all classification tournament after the season.
You like to see them go up against a miller Grove or Milton, see what they could do.
I know they'd love the opportunity.
Herb, your thoughts If you had to put a bow on this one wire to wire, right?
Well, I knew Coach Ron Linc knew going in.
They were going to have to play almost a perfect game to stay on the floor with the Whitfield Academy.
And they couldn't do that because two of their starters were in foul trouble.
And Whitfield Academy just took off after that.
And looked back.
You saw that gentleman right there in the center, Kenneth Gaines.
An outstanding performance here this afternoon to lead the Wolfpack to a 73 to 15 victory over Athens.
Christian postgame festivities will continue with the trophy presentation.
We'll be right back.

Christian By the count of seven, 3 to 50.
They led from wire to wire.
Hurwitz Well, no doubt about it.
Really impressive display by Whitfield Academy will always like to have a competitive game, but you can't take anything.
You know, a team goes out there, they're supposed to play to their maximum, and that's what they did.
And they they put it all together this evening.
Well, they rebound it, they defend it.
They also had an opportunity to disrupt what Athens Christian tried to do in a half court.
They sped up tempo and that was something that Ryan Link, the head coach of the Eagles, was concerned about coming in.
And it seemed to come out and play that way as we saw this basketball game this afternoon, 73 to 50 Whitfield Academy and of coach Tyrone Johnson and company.
We'll go back to it will be a nice drive back to Cobb County with another championship some more hardware.
Well yeah.
Bryan Lake's a great coach and he's a veteran coach.
He knew what was coming, but just just because you know something's coming, sometimes you can't do anything about it.
But I'll tell you what, the folks at Athens, Christian, got a lot to be excited about because Turtle Jackson was unbelievable.
Boy, you get to get a look at the runners up, The head coach of the runners up, the Eagles of Athens Christian coached by Ron Link.
We talked about the great years at Lakeside the cabin.
Then you see the champions, the single-A champions, the Whitfield Academy, Wolfpack, and of course, Tyrone Johnson.
What an outstanding job he did throughout the season.
But more importantly, he did today as they get to single-A championship.
Now for the trophy presentation, let's go to our GPB colleague Mark Harmon.
Marky Mark, it's all yours.
Thank you, Gayle.
It's time now to present the championship trophy to the class single-A wolfpack of Whitfield.

Thank you.
We want to congratulate Whitfield and the Georgia High School Association is pleased to have our presenting sponsor is here.

Well earned, Well-deserved.

Am extremely proud of my guys.
I mean, we we work very hard.
I mean, starting for the month of June, I cannot tell people in the stands what sort of sacrifices these guys have made.
I just want to congratulate our fans, the blue crew over there.
Uh, want to congratulate my players and obviously my top three seniors and my coaching staff.
And I also just want to say I just praise my Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
All right, let's talk to Kenny Gaines.
Kenny What's it mean to you to be a senior?
Go out on top.
Holding the championship trophy is really a dream come true.
You know, I've been dreaming about this as my sophomore year since I came here, and I can't do anything but think.
Oh, Jordan Carr, your Hold that, hold it high, Hold it high.
For all the Wolfpack fans.
Tell us what it means to you to be the champion this year.
Man, It's just so I can't even explain.
I mean, it's my second one and it's just I just I mean, I can't I can't even explain it.
And it's just a great way to go out on top.
And it is.
It is, I have to say.
Yes.
All right, Coach, you've got to be very proud of your entire class, your entire team.
And the fact that this is your third state championship since 2003.
I am.
I am.
And a lot of our former players are here who are on a 23 state championship team in oh nine, as well as the other guys who played and competed with you in the past.
I just want to tell everybody that we appreciate you.
WHITFIELD We try to breed a fraternity, a team of brothers.
So I just thank God for there's going to be a hot time in Mapleton tonight, and that's Luke the absolute, absolute congratulation.
WHITFIELD All right.
Congratulations to the wolfpack of Whitfield Academy, the class, a single state champs in 2012.
Now it's time for the GPB tailgate party to kick off.
All right, Welcome back to the GSA basketball championships on GPB, and congratulations to Whitfield on that championship win.
Coming up, we will have the girls matchup between Lovett, Lovett and Buford.
As Buford looks to snag that fourth straight title and Lovett looks to snag their very first.
Now, if you couldn't make it down to Macon, no worries, because the championships are streaming live on the internet at GPB Dawg slash sports.
We've got a visual for you right here.

Now, also, we as we gear up for another football season here on GPB, we have an app that you can download to follow all of your favorite Georgia high school football teams all season long, and you can download that app on your iPhone or your iPad today.
Just go to the App Store and put in GPB Sports football and it will come right up.
And we want to keep you informed as we gear up for Football Fridays in Georgia.
Mark Harmon, I'm going to give it back to you.
Thank you very much, Jackie.
It's good to be here.
We're getting ready for the girls Double-A state championship game coming up between Buford and Lovett.
But, you know, GPB is the home of great documentary work.
And right now we have a project on the drawing board that needs your help.
It's called says if they were going to away from football as a championship team right there on top it's year two of GPB Sports football Friday's in Georgia and it's bigger and better than ever.
Kicking off August 31st with the Battle of the Big Chicken, a double portion of high school sports action live from McEachern High School and a return of all your Friday night favorites from Are You Smarter?
Well, we test the skills of the principals to see if they are in fact smarter than their students.
So you are smarter than your students.
Way to go.
All right.
To rent.
Check a check in with two players.
Pair rents to see how well they really know their kids math.
It's actually anatomy was pretty tough.
In a preview of high school sports around the state, when John's Georgia segment, we John's Georgia.
But let's show you how it turned into number five with the tornadoes.
You want to talk about one of the best games to those crazy fans that we highlight at the end of every game, but where you have all the fun off and on the field, pass is picked on and they're going to take it in for a touchdown.
Oh, but three touchdowns.
So from Ringgold to Valdosta and Savannah to Lagrange, your two is the best coverage of high school sports on your football Fridays in Georgia all season long on the great GPB.
All right.
As you saw there, that's Football Fridays.
We're really looking forward to that coming up in in the fall.
Now, as I mentioned, we have a great project going on right now.
It's entitled Is As If They Were Ghost.
It's about an African-American athlete from about two decades ago and the challenges they face and the past that they blazed 60.
It was as if they were invisible.
It was as if their remarkable accomplishments didn't matter.
It was as if they were ghosts.
During the last years of Jim Crow, some of Georgia's greatest athletes performed on a separate but not equal playing field.
NBA great world.
FRAZIER You know, I remember we used to eat at some certain people houses that would serve us food because obviously we couldn't go to the restrooms.
Help us bring this previously untold story out of the shadows, the great athletes and coaches who blazed the trail.
And a lot of those guys were good men.
I mean, they they did a lot in the neighborhood they gave back.
So they really set a good example for me.
To find out how you can champion this project, please go to GPB Dawgs.
Joining us now is our own Herb White, who's a part of this project.
Talk about the importance of getting this documentary made.
Herb.
Well, Mark, you know, at Georgia Public Broadcasting, our mission is to produce programing that entertains and educates and informs the people of Georgia.
But sometimes you need new programing.
Is the right thing to do.
And this is one of those times because you had people back in the decades that we're talking about in the forties, fifties and early sixties that accomplished amazing things.
There were coaches, athletes and teams that were doing things people didn't know about back in.
A lot of them weren't recorded because there weren't records kept in.
They weren't they're not in the Hall of Fame and and some of those people are passing away and we need to make sure that we recognize their accomplishments and achievements and let folks know it's part of the history of our state.
Now, you played at the University of Georgia.
You played for the Atlanta Hawks.
So this project was very near and dear because you've had teammates and people that they played with that are affected by this.
Well, I was very fortunate growing up in the early sixties, Mark, that I became friends with Clarence Scott, who we talked to last night and some other some other black guys.
And I started playing with those guys, playing basketball at an early age and I would play with them all summer and then I would go back and play in the All White League and it was like going to the B team quite often.
My senior year they told me I was the best basketball player in the state of Georgia, but I knew that there were guys I was playing with in the summertime that were just as good as me.
There weren't getting any recognition at all.
And and so for years I want to recognize those guys.
And then I started thinking, Well, we need to recognize not just those guys, but all the people that were doing those things around the state.
And so we need people to step up out there, come and join us.
If you're personally you want to be personally involved, you can get in touch with us.
You can go to the Georgia Public Broadcasting website.
There's a Web page called As If We Were Goes.
And we need some corporate people to step up and help us to get this documentary completed.
Well, that's one thing I wanted to ask is how can people, you know, contact you?
How could a big sponsor come by and and, you know, write the check that you guys need to get this film made?
Well, you can make a pledge online, you know, right on our Web page here if you want to make a personal donation.
But if you're a corporate person, we certainly are going to help anybody that wants to become a part this.
They'll receive recognition during the programing and we'll let folks know that you're helping us to recognize these great Georgians.
And it's about time we did that.
Now, you've been working on this project quite a while.
What would it mean to you to get this thing accomplished?
Well, again, I have a personal interest because it affected me personally.
I went on to play college basketball.
I went on to play with the Atlanta Hawks because of my experiences at a young age with those guys that I was talking about a moment ago.
So it's very important.
But we've interviewed some people with amazing stories and the things they while they were undergoing Jim Crow and segregation and the things they had to accomplish.
You heard Walt Frazier talking about when they went on the bus and traveled to South Georgia.
They had to pack all the food with them on that trip because they couldn't eat in the restaurants.
And when they actually got to where they were going to be playing and they were staying overnight, they actually had to stay with the other team.
Can you imagine these young kids?
I have no idea.
And that's another reason because the kids that are playing today need to know who shoulders they're standing on, who made it possible for them.
All right, Herbal, good job.
And let's get that thing done.
Time now to check in with Jacki Britton, who is standing by with some crazy basketball fans Jackie.
That's right, Mark.
They're gearing up for the game.
This would be before its fourth straight championship title.
Standing with me now is Tyler is a student over at Buford.
What has school been like this week as you gear up for the basketball championships?
Well, the last two days, it's been really high.
Through the hallways, everyone's had a bunch of energy, and it's just been fun.
Well, I know that after a while.
You keep winning over and over again.
Is the excitement still there?
Yeah.
I mean, it dies down every now and then, but usually when it comes, game time is still there.
All right.
Well, Kristian, you said your basketball had all.
I was going to talk to you about this while your dad is the head coach.
What's it like coming here to play, to watch your dad, Coach?
It's fun.
I mean, I just like being here to support him and stuff, and hopefully we keep coming back.
All right, Well, be honest.
Do you come here to watch the game or to cheer on your dad?
Cheer on the cheer on my dad.
All of it.
All right.
That's it for Buford crazy fans.
Mark will send it back over there to you on the set.
All right.
Thank you, Jacqui.
We are getting ready for the girls.
Double AA state championship game between Buford and Leavitt.
So let's check in with the two guys that are going to call this game for us.
Guys, what do you got?
Well, Mark, we're going to talk about the quality of athlete that's going to be coming up here with Buford and Leavitt match up of Region six number one and Region six.
Number two, John Nelson here, the coach, Shawn Golden, right next to me.
And we got a lot of folks heading D-1 when this is done.
Well, tell me about that.
You've got Tennessee, you've got Summit, Georgia, you've got some going to UT, Chattanooga, you've got some going to Stanford, UCLA all over the United States.
The state of Georgia is loaded with talent.
Now, you talk about these two teams once again, same region.
They're very familiar with each other.
They're probably better friends off the floor than they are players on the floor.
Well, that's what we saw.
You talk about North playing at Duke, 15 minutes away from one another.
No different from these two teams right here.
They know each other.
The coaches are great friends.
I'm sure they talked about this game last night.
Now we're talking about Andrea Carter.
We're talking about Kayla Davis.
We're talking about Tatiana Jackson.
There's a lot of players in 10 seconds and we got to go through here.
Well, I'll tell you what, it's going to start from head to toe.
Good talent.
The court tonight.
Sit back, relax and enjoy this exciting game because it's going to be a track race.
See, now, that's what I like to hear.
That's the coach.
I'm John.
I'll send it back to Mark.
That's your preview.
All right, John.
John, thanks very much.
We are live at the Macon Coliseum where it's championship weekend here on GPB.
And one of the programs that we are very proud of here at Gp-B is our Today in Georgia History segment.
Director Dr. Stan Deaton is the host.
And every day he has a day by day, day by day, a good chronicle what went on in Georgia history.
So let's take a look at today's date.
I'm Stan Deaton with the Georgia Historical Society.
The man known as Mr. Speaker.
Born in Bremen on March ten, 1924.
Today, in Georgia history.
Today in Georgia, history is made possible by the generous support from Robert W Woodruff Foundation and as a joint production of the Georgia Historical Society and Georgia Public Broadcasting.
For more on this topic, go to.
Today in Georgia history, Dawg.
All right.
We have crowned Tuesday champs today, the boys and girls single.
We are getting ready now for the girls Double-A state championship and they'll be the lady Lions of Lovett taking on the Buford Wolves.
Lovett comes into this game with a 27 and five record.
The Buford Wolves are 25 and seven, and of course, Buford has won three consecutive state championships.
2009 2010, 2011.
They're trying to score four straight championships, and we've got that coming up right after this.
Time out.
Meet John.
John has decided to drop out of school, but what he didn't realize is that now this door will be closed to him.
And this one?
This one, too.
Well, you get the idea.
PBS celebrates the legends of classic country like Rhinestone Cowboy.
And I miss my brother's blues.
Please help me.
I'm falling.
All of the chapel bells are ringing.
I'm so home.
So much good crying.
