Live from the Macon Center Plex hits the 2007 GHC State basketball Championship today.
Class AA Boys Action features the Whitfield Academy Wolf pack at 25 and seven, taking on the Wilkinson County Warriors at 31 and one.
And a good afternoon, everyone.
I'm Dave Gardner.
With you.
Is our wall to wall coverage of high school basketball state championships continues live right here on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
A great match up in class AA today.
WHITFIELD Academy, of course, the runner up last year taking on a Wilkinson County team.
Winners of 27 straight Here to call it for you, the team of John Wilkerson and Phil Hanson.
Guys, thank you, Dave And Phil, I think we do have the top two teams in class single AA duking it out for the state championship.
I believe you're right, John.
You know the old adage, same bride, different veil.
These both programs are notorious for getting to the Final Four.
They've turned this program, this tournament, into their own invitational tournament.
Well, let's begin with Whitfield Academy in their fourth state title game of the past five years.
And let's look at Kelvin McConnell.
This kid can shoot it from the parking lot if he gets his feet set.
He's going to wear it out all night long.
A great shooter has done a superb job of getting himself in really good shape.
He's probably dropped about ten or £15 a little quicker and can really stroke it.
He's actually dropped £50 since last summer.
Junior Hartley and Brandon Reed will start as well as Kelvin McConnell and the Reddick twins of Charlie and Collin Redick.
And Whitfield is coached by Tyrone Johnson.
He was six here with the Wolfpack and won 79% of his games and he won a state championship back in 2003 with the Wolfpack.
Now let's tell you about the Wilkinson County Warriors, and this is a team that's really dominated all year.
They've got a long winning streak going on and here they are in the Final Four in the championship game.
But the biggest thing, it's not your dad's Wilkinson County anymore.
This team can really go scenario Hillman can score he's jet quick fast.
He and his running mate La Quintin Jones are probably the best two backcourt players in this whole tournament.
I'd say in class a classification and here's your warrior starting lineup with Jones and Johnson and Hillman, your guards, Jamal Day and my Tobias Adams.
I'm looking forward to watching Octavius Adams play.
He's also part of that one two punch with some area of helmet.
There's Dr. Aaron Jeter in his ninth year at Wilkinson County.
He has three state championships under his belt, 99 2004, Double-A, single-A and then the Class AA state championship in 2002, the last time the Warriors have been in the state title game.
This should be a dandy and we've already had one dandy in the girls class single-A state championship game with Hopkinsville defeating landmark Christian fell.
I just hope you have enough left in the tank for this one.
I'm ready to go.
Both these teams are explosive big fast indeed.
This should be a dandy.
All right, let's get the starting line ups again.
And this time we go to the voice of the Macon Coliseum.
Eddie Ashley County Warriors with a record of 31 and one dressed in white as your home team.
Now, have your attention for the starting lineups.
First for Whitfield Academy at forward number two, a six foot three sophomore Brandon Reed.
At forward number five, a six foot four.
Sophomore Charlie Reddick at center number 44, a six foot nine.
Sophomore Colin Reddick at guard, number 33, a five foot 11 senior, Kelvin McConnell at guard number 12, a six foot two senior.
Tanner Hartley and Whitfield Academy's head coach Tyron Johnson.
Now for your Wilkinson County Warrior at Guard number ten, a six foot senior.
Gary Johnson at center number 13, a six foot nine senior, debuts Adam at four, a 23 six foot three junior jump all day, looked up at guard number 21, a six foot two senior scenario.
Gilmore at guard number 22, a six foot two senior.
Look quick Jones and Wilkinson County's head coach Pete Cheatham.
All right.
We're doing all right.
We're going to crown a state class single, a state champion in boys basketball.
Tip things off when we come back.

Welcome back to the Macon Coliseum, Lincoln Center for the third member of our crew down on the floor, Scott tells Levski.
Thank you very much, John.
I had a chance to chat with both the coaches before the game.
First of all, for Whitefield Academy Coach Johnson tells me he's really keen on his defense.
He wants to jam the outlet pass, keep his defense extended and rebound both offensively and defensively.
For Wilkinson County coach Jeter said.
We just know we have to be consistent offensively and defensively.
And then he said, We just need to do what we do.
John Thank you, Scott.
Phil Hanson, the keys to the game for you.
I think defensive transition is a must rebound.
You've got to control the glass mental discipline and you've got to come with intensity.
You've got to match your opponent's intensity and just compete.
We are underway at the Macon Cineplex.
I highly point quickly over to Kelvin McConnell and I'll be a patient wolfpack off of Wilkinson County and a man to man defense and the Wolfpack will be in no hurry at three inside as a slot away by Hillman.
Here comes Wilco.
Coleman will take the first shot and bounce and stay with the Warriors.
The Warriors are so big and they have so much lean, so defensively they don't have to close out as far because they're so long and they can get in, alter and block a lot of shots.
Near turnover.
You just saw a replay that great block by Samuel Hillman and Wolfpack will take over the chest on their way in class.
single-A Boise State Title game, Wakefield Academy, Wilkinson County.
They've met before this year and New Year steal Charlie Reddick was able to he turns it over.
But here's an open opportunity for the Warriors to extend Jones.
But Johnny, he cannot float any pass in the game today on either end of the floor.
It's going to get picked off.
You got to come to the pass.
You got to make a snap pass, extend those forms and lock out those thumbs.
Harley coming down for Whitfield.
They met back in January 15th.
Whitfield and Wilkinson with the Wilkinson County Warriors winning 1756.
That game for the Cowboys not lost the game.
Grayson right by Reed.
I love this kid.
Last year I said he was the best young player in the in the tournament.
He is an outstanding talent just a sophomore six three still going as a draft and no good rebound after what fell to Tabitha Here's Huntley running the play and finishing.
One thing I like about Hartley he gives you the option of he can go inside and outside because of his body type.
He's a strong kid.
He can post up most guards and he's quick enough to take forwards off the move and quick timeout by Wilkinson County.
He can take it as a junior and Hartley does a nice job of using the rim to block the opponent's name to what?
Hartley's had quite a state tournament this year.
He has 13 points in his block town.
His final game here, a triple double the quarter finals against the players, 15 points, ten rebounds.
Tate SEALs one assist away from a quadruple double.
It's nice And he's had quite a state tournament and this is like a with the talent point we have in the game today.
It's like a small college game.
It's a mid-major game.
You ask me right now, you're looking at some Division one town here, Martavis Adams from Wilkinson County.
He's committed Oklahoma State's an aerial woman for Wilkinson County.
He's committed to Alabama.
And Dontrelle Taylor, who we should see earlier, later in the game off the bench, he's going to Tennessee State and then Linfield's got seven kids that mid-major schools, both very talented teams in the class.
They love it here.
SPELLMAN North then another rebound by Whitfield and a foul inside may have been a push I think they got Redick with a push which he's a good looking scenario Hillman a tremendous athlete shoots the ball very well off the rise both performed well you called it right here to push off but Clinton, Jones and Hillman can really take the ball to the basket and it's kicked out of bounds by Reddick right it gets the assignment one scenario Holman for Charlie Redick in the five his twin brother Collin got great wingspan super long arms threatens Jones to tell telling the time line going slow once that way one move by Jones to get strips which has got to get better help side on there They're looking to Patterson to shoot layups all day There's no help stat on this He drove in there just getting what blue shirts.
They got to be waiting.
They're not playing it And there's a steal by Huntley, but he loses it.
Allen's battling it with Huntley and Whitfield comes up with his lead on Martini TV.
Something no big deal.
Well, yeah force that shot changed that shot and so Wilkinson found he gets the ball on film the last five You see Wilkinson County we heard about the frenetic pace that they played, but they're playing.
It's almost like the play.
Which game?
Know exactly this?
They're playing slow.
To be honest with you guys, they usually like to run down the football right there.
They're going to get this off day.
But what I can see what Whitfield's doing is they're making it Quinton Jones drive with his right hand.
Since he's left handed, they're making him go right.
But you got it.
That's all well and good, but you got to get some help.
Side defense there.
He's going to make right in the left hand, there's a steal of film.
And this is the exciting and the foul Why fouling Jones You can't do that if you've got to follow him don't let him get the ball over his shoulder somehow.
Hillman makes this statement early on.
He's a thunderous dunker.
He can really get up.
I think I heard a roar from the Crimson Tide Mason back in Tuscaloosa as well, converting the three point play.
Both these teams score in bunches.
It's a 3.3. lead inside.
It's great.
Tip no good.
really?
Got nice on.
He's very, very nice.
Soft hands kept that ball above his head didn't bring it down Hard money coming off a 20.14 rebound performance and he blocks in the semifinal game on here Still does Well I was alert.
I don't know if I knew they were coming at us.
I mean, this one, we got a timeout.
It's been a fun one so far.
But Wilkinson County up by one.
We're going to take a little bit of break.
We'll come back to make an answer this funding for this program is provided by the Georgia High School Association, the GHC would like to thank Dodge for their outstanding support of high school sports programing on GPB.
Dodge dealerships across Georgia are proud to bring you the exciting action of GHC, a championship basketball as the official vehicle of the GHC dodge salute to the hard work community spirit and the dedication of these two fine teams.

Dodge grabbed life by the horns and were back on at the Macon Center.
Flex.
Jon Wilkerson, Phil Handsome, Scott Kozlowski with you.
Really been in kind of a strange start for a start that Whitfield's going to love right now.
Definitely going down one in basically 4 minutes to go in the first quarter there.
It's anybody's ballgame, obviously, but the pace is definitely favoring.
WHITFIELD But both teams are applying a great deal of pressure.
Whitfield's coming in with Chris Reddy in the Post and Addison Dayton's on the perimeter as Adams uses that play Move on the BLOCK.
By then HOPKINS with the rebound, the lead the break and David's able to save it inside the ready that's happy with the shot and over the back fall on Colin Reddick now what WHITFIELD has to do is not get cheap fouls.
I mean, you got to make the most out of your files.
You don't want to foul 93 feet from the basket.
I got to say to Whitfield has an opportunity for fast break.
They need to finish on it definitely because they're not going to be few and far between.
Who's Hillman Roberson?
David Gray, Quincy Sanders.
This looks like David Johnson.
These guys have to decide what I think.
And they got a black guy ready.
Go.
Good night, Chris.
Letting you recall in the foul spurs 14 foul on Winfield Academy.
That's a big stat Keep that one in mind.
Fouls are starting to add up in the Wolfpack.
Well if you can afford a zero so you can't tell me that the pace the physicality of the game that they should be that much of a discrepancy.
Hellman's an 83% free throw shooting his top game this year was in Wilkinson County's only loss 40 points against Waynesboro all through the summer, eight 1 to 2 on that trip.
Then Adams Great job.
He never put the ball down on the floor.
John That's what you want to teach your big man.
Keep it chin high and above and go straight back up for Conley by the Warriors.
McConnell left for Whitfield to run some sets from to get the foul going partly towns is inside and rebound Dontrelle Taylor on the go to the steal McConnell gets down which you can't say that will go to the warriors so seniors not going to be happy with that he's not going to want long loopy passes especially against Whitfield They're too quick.
I tend to think that Wilkinson might be seeing a different Whitfield team than they saw back in January 15th.
And talking with Coach Johnson, some of his younger players have gotten better, more experienced.
Here's Hillman when he walks, took an extra step.
So the Wolfpack will have an offensive possession.
Tell them McConnell will bring it up.
He shed £50 over the summer.
Was amazing.
Last year he was there to guard and now he predominantly runs the point.
It's Harrison Davis running at the top of the ball.
The McConnell shot by Reed knocked down a rebound after Hillman and Wilkinson looking to run McConnell long shot down by Gary Johnson.
If he gets his feet set, he can see it all day long.
Seven point lead by the Warriors.
That's the flex left of the baseline near the two minute mark.
Remember the screen arms, the diving for the absolute low post in the corner off the foot of Hillman.
Another turnover his helmet with a dunk opportunity that's left the way by Addison Davis but he fouled him but I've seen now Whitfield is not going to allow any easy layups or dunks.
They're going to try to stop that at all cost.
They're going to get hard fouls, anything, go into the basket, try to keep the momentum out of this game.
So scenario Hillman will go to the line all ready, 5 to 4.
That's the second foul on Allison DAVIES.
Off the bench in the quarterfinals.
No scenario.
Hillman at 25 points in the Southwest, allowing Christian and 23 points in the semis against Turner County.
In the first round, he had 15 points.
So he's had a nice state tournament, won a majority of the Wilkinson County Games.
Exception of someone that has been blocked.
And the most of those, when they're so far ahead, he basically comes out.
So he you know, he probably had 30 points in 19 8.1 and then the patience by the Wolfpack sometimes you forget for is the shot clock and high school basketball.
You like dribbling.
That's the thing Jones kept away on McConnell.
Jones throws it off first.
Redding is still the Williams Whitfield coming in with Trey Miller.
He'll run the point.
Wow, I don't know.
A sophomore, 511.
There's Adams not there but it doesn't rebound when knocked away by Reddick.
WHITFIELD The opportunity to run.
MCCONNELL Slow it down smart play he's got to make look as a guy to play defense in the halfcourt set make them play defense in the 20 seconds every time down the floor as we near the one minute mark in the first quarter.
Trey.
No, you can't do that against your speed if you just dribble around him.
And McConnell put it up his first shot of the day with the most Adams thoughts.
Taylor Taylor with the rebound.
I love that kid.
He's getting better and better here.
Johnson with the three whistle underneath six points all three unofficially officially for Gary Johnson they get the outside game going.
That is Wilkinson County.
It could be a long night for Winfield because then you're gonna have to come out and get them and then you're just too tough with the Twin Towers of Taylor and Adams.
And now they come in Wilkins accounting within the 33, a first at first for the great roll player banger inside Octavius Adams is calling a foul and a three point jumper.
He's still Tommy Nice the first team foul on the Warriors Wilkinson County's lane disturbs your offense because then you cut you may be open but they close out so quickly McConnell with no room to shoot Gary Johnson's done good job defensively from the onset undersized Hartley will take it himself Justin Murray trying to find Reddick inside and Hellman's opened up and we've come to the end of the first quarter.
It's good exciting Wilkinson County up by 11.
We'll be back after this.
You've heard my sense.

The six says Wilkinson County leads Whitfield Academy here at the Class single-A state championship game runner run by Wilco to end the first quarter last 410 a ten run.
And that was due solely to their defensive pressure, which the Academy is going to do a better job of cutting and slashing to the basket with all their pounding and dribbling, has caused three straight turnovers.
Duncan Powers It was Whitfield with the ball to begin the second quarter Plano sophomore there with a hammer on him will be called on.
Hillman I thought they had Trey Miller to an elbow there for the gone.
Either way, both these teams are a little chippy.
They're going at each other.
Well, I know what's at stake and of course Woodfield the field Wilkinson county in the semis last year on their way to the state title game, which Whitfield lost the South rose to run a Christian two year ago and another foul inside against Gary Johnson.
And the reason when they made a building out there was McConnell was a little out of control pound for you just giving inside his heart.
Lee had to change his shot.
Another call inside Redding with the foul is Chris Redding committed his first as a substitution.
Brandon Reed checks back in for the year that Jones all the way he's done that all the first time A solid move forward by Jamal Day and Whitfield's ball They ran that high ball screen all day long against Turner County in the semis.
The Quintin Jones comes off Dontrelle Taylor's screen.
And what you're going to get there is he's either going to take it that being Jones all the way to the basket or are going to get the pick and roll situation and the offside post which is Martavis Adams is going to step up he did you feel like I have right now the Whitfield missing some great opportunities to make some kind of run into this thing and what's happened in here with their inability to score is with the offense set their defensive tempo when you when you score, not only does it set your offensive tempo, but most importantly, it sets your good sense of tempo, because now they can apply their to when to press for ways to keep us at one three one half a trap because they can't hardly talk their lead inside, hardly knocked away.
Still, I love the way they're competing, man.
I love the way they compete.
A double foul right there.
That's not smart.
Inside writing is Jamal Day three Jamal Gage call for a double foul inside already he's got a wingspan like a plane broken Some maintain possession Nice look Clinton Jones, who's Johnson now has decided he's wasn't expecting it It's going to be a nice pass a turnover by Wilkinson County Wolfpack looking to capitalize and Brandon Rigg will drive challenge You got him.
I love him.
He's something fun to watch right there.
Keep the cameras on him.
We'll see what happens.
He's thrown in the open field with a long rebound numbers out there.
You've really got that penetration not the way this alongside his on the fire was on the floor He's like a monkey on some all day.
And Fred Reid is so explosive he gets the most out of his body.
He's not real strong kid but he plays extremely long and tall.
He's got to take a look at Brandon Reid's numbers for the season and a lot of lefties in the tournament at 11 points against Terrell County in the semifinals, 13 against Hancock County in the quarters.
You take a look at Chris Redding, checking in for the attack.
28.15 rebounds in Saturday's academy first round.
That was his monster game of the year.
Look for the press to be implemented by Russell.
The cameras just go down nice all out of bounds and stay with the Wolfpack.
But he slowly but surely you would feel Cameron creeping back into sneaking back in, taking the danger those opportunities.
Now his Reed has picked up has his pocket text there's too much dribbling and there's Johnson towns and let him follow more good Reddick with the rebound and a foul by Wilkinson Calhoun some more fouls is tonight up there again another rich foul 93 feet from the basket He just can't have that and just drive you nuts as a coach some all day commits his second personal foul this should be a good look at Colin Reddick six nine 200 times sophomore 20 points 14 rebounds and he blocks in the semifinal series.
Another performance like that.
This might be a steal, Charlie Atkinson Off the glass.
Beautiful soft touch, Collin Right.
It keeps the ball above his head.
Nice fighting about this.
Now here comes the press 2 to 1.
Press rankings.
Tony doesn't like to be profane, blocked by his own ranks.
And now here come the Wolfpack running jam all day.
And he had to take that to the basket.
Strong heat out of control.
That should have been a foul.
But he got him on the arm.
The team all day has got to take the ball right to the shot blockers his chest.
Here he comes.
See that little floater?
Take the ball to the shot blockers chest.
If you go away from the shot blocker, you create space.
In any space, you create the defense by that guy who's Wilkinson, Tommy Scott.
No.
Good bye day.
And another opportunity, as David said, play nicely last time.
His first two points and suddenly the Whitfield Academy Wolfpack has woken up excitement going on here and making more to come when we return to the class single AA State Boys State Championship game here.
Now, funding for this program is provided by the Georgia High School Association.
The GHC would like to thank State Farm for the outstanding support of high school sports programing on GPB State Farm is proud to be the official awards presenter of the GHC, recognizing outstanding achievements by Georgia's student athletes in competitive sports and activities.
State Farm wants families and teens to always drive safe in your communities as you travel to work, school or play like a good neighbor.
State Farm is their 1713 Wilco Warriors leading Woodfield Academy will take on a little bit of a run here in the second quarter to get back into this game until Hanson.
No, we've heard about Wilkinson County and you've seen in Stance and how well they played, how many points they put out.
They just looked a little tight to me.
They're playing a little, little tight, you're right.
And they just got to, you know, let the horse's neck go and let him run.
Watch Wilkinson County.
Now they're going to go with their big lineup of Taylor and Adams.
It's the same time with the a high low action right there.
Adams throws it down and this is a matchup problem for Wilkinson for Whitfield Academy due to the fact that they don't have anyone to match the two big cap kids high Nice seven 6 to 3 but that three point shot is the answer to a lot of woes.
Tony by Vaughn Steel.
He's Johnson on the baseline A lot of stat that defensive pressure by Will Field has been pretty impressive they played hard I mean there's been nothing easy today for Wilkinson County take away a couple of easy layups.
You know we fell off the schools that the Wilkinson County boys will be going to well you know next year they got some players in the major schools are looking at them so they'll be playing at the next level.
We saw that New Orleans hit from the free throw line.
Brandon Reed at the Trenton officially ranked and David Fall with a foul on the back court but Brandon Reese kept him in this thing in the first half.
His explosiveness to the basket, his ability to score 50 feet down.
Yes.
If you take a look at Reed challenging, let me ask you this.
Wilkinson count he's been only in a few close games this year as this game gets more and more stays in this situation you see a mindset.
Wilkinson Coming a little bit to it to an extent.
But however these guys play in so many games, I mean, even with the way you tournaments in tech playing, you know, at each other's house.
So when games get tight, they're used to pressure situations because that's why they're big time players.
So as a team in the state tournament, it could have an effect tonight.
But look, of these kids have played in that type of situation.
The playing Jones gives the Warriors a three point lead, just as Stubbs in the game for Wicked.
Let's get you look at the gun close and your turnover falling for them And there's a three point home team that we can still take the base and get fouled and it counts.
He's keeping him in the game.
He is a very, very good young player.
He has no fear.
Nice ball, fake takes it right to the glass, uses it, keeps the ball between the defensive man and him.
He can his shoulders between the defense man.
The ball back is a third person a foul and Jamal de will and he will sit and we will check in another Whipple.
The good thing about Wilkinson County is they go five deep and there's not that much of a time drop off.
a lot of these guys who start on any other team somebody start.
Yeah.
And want the ball in that guy's hands so Quintin Jones.
look at that pass the Whitlock he makes so much happen with the ball in his hands that is the point in jealousy so quick and then you get to the front of the rim better than anybody in the tournament.
Huntley Townsend Jones flipped inside by Stubbs and you may have been called the solution a little one on five action here, but you know, hardly anybody.
You know, Hartley is not afraid of anybody See his presents a big matchup problem due to the fact his size, he can post up the smaller guards and he's too fast for the big kids to guarding you.
This is the first time Hartley has had a point guard role full time.
The switch on Kevin Anderson the last couple of years.
He's Kevin Anderson to the Peach Tree, which employs Huntley, inherited it the full time and he has been exactly what Tyrone Johnson is needed.
totally.
There's a steal.
Yeah.
You never want to make a pass across the foul line underneath your basket.
The Wolfpack have the lead, and then McConnell commits the foul.
When you throw that diagonal pass back under your basket, all the defenseman has to do is shoot that gap and you've just had an assist to him.
Easy two for the Wolfpack.
After McConnell commits the foul he sends Justin Stubbs singing Stubbs the sophomore 511 had a season high of 19 points against Warren County in the regional semifinals.
Where you go about that not much of a town drop off with his account of the man to man defense.
And there's Stubbs battling with Aaron McCloud checked in the game every time WHISTLE Academy's had trouble in the offensive set is when they try to dribble too much and they just pound the ball aimlessly looking for an opening to make the pass They've got to take that ball with maybe a shallow cut or a quick backdoor pass again.
And the offense, you either win a pass, you want a dribble, you want a reverse, or you want a backdoor.
Here's Johnson you got there and you've got the rebound.
Reed Always looking for opportunities Glass Dribbling Pocket Picks by Gary Johnson.
These guys are too fast.
If it takes you more than one dribble from the top of the key to the basket, it's too many.
You're not open.
I got to have faith that finally Johnson doesn't want to lose inside Carson to Adams.
Now look for Wilkinson County to go to that play all day long.
Get it inside to the bigs.
Three point lead for the Warriors.
It comes at least their lead will drive down the final.
No, that's a Clyde with the rebound Here's McConnell driving down right the left to see and Justin Stevens is there and that play was doomed when he did the hop he had a shoulder tuck.
So that's one thing they're going to look for.
Plus, Brooks County was set to take that charge.
When you take that charge, tuck your chin, lock yourself in, sit on your butt and slide double figures and three fouls for Whitfield is an inside foul inside looks like college ready Wilkinson County's done a nice job now of spreading Whitfield Academy out and isolating Martavis Adams down low basically on a four out one in the look and they're just going to bang it inside of him all day long Redick Second person Samuel signs he'll be heading to stay in Oklahoma play for the Oklahoma State Cowboys had a big win last night They were right there Did I know you look at my team silence silences It's just letting chicks in for Whitfield Any of the prototypical big 12/3 still a big man Google again right?
Both he and Taylor have excellent hands.
Four big kids, excellent hands.
They can really catch the ball under two back screen Hartley Pantry south and good look at the rebound and Wilkinson now looking to run to Jones He's so fast he's just so hard to contain off the dribble Got to make him get rid of it and suddenly he's a six point lead again.
And Haley turns it over.
Well, as you mentioned earlier, both these teams score in bunches because they're able to apply so much pressure on the defensive end of the floor.
Their defense creates offense.
Tyrone Johnson, six years with the Whitfield Academy Wolfpack.
He has a state title man to man.
He drew and that's Jones play great ball so went in and stepped inside but slo mo that was that exceptional pass by the Clayton Jones Here he comes down boom it make that pass on the run at that speed and to thread that needle that was excellent excellent pass and big time catch by Martavis Adams and he can shoot the free throw 80% for the year but this is a similar old play.
Are you kidding me?
Are you kidding me?
Holy mackerel.
Six nine Senior goes about 245 to 60.
99.
Yes.
He's already got some big man skills inside and I'm sure he's trying slightly gets his hands on skills needed to become better 50 trip though to be near the one minute mark partly and the tip is good inside that was Trey Miller just 2.16 Miller Johnson quickly but Wilkinson County is doing their attacking Whitfield Academy's pressure.
If you're going to press, we're going to make that press pay and we'll talk to coach Geno Smith.
He doesn't make this team doesn't like to be pressed on.
He can hang in there.
Well, so far here's McConnell.
He's fouled Johnson on the wrist.
You never want to find the jump shooter.
That's a cardinal rule.
Do not foul the jump shooter.
Challenge the shot.
You don't want those men come on Ticky tacky reach fouls.
You don't need that challenge Hit step block out Kelvin McConnell senior 511 play in his third state championship game and a great career and the freshman in 2004 lost the Southwest Atlantic person lost to the second last year.
It's his last opportunity and he makes a pair 122 press turnover by the Warriors for 15 seconds to go which you never want to do is jump to pass because you're not Peter Pan.
You're going to come down.
So if you jump the pass in, the defense man backs off and plays the passing lane.
Your son because the ball, you can't get it back.
And once you let it go, it's going to be errant.
Both teams approaching double figures.
It's in the league, got the Peter Pan lessons ten And McConnell he's a shooter but Reed has a hot hand.
that's from Intel puts them in double figures.
Big shot and Whitfield Academy will go down to the locker room down by one.
Now, a huge shot by Brandon Reed.
Guys, let's go down the scout basket with Coach Teeter.
I'm here with Coach Cheater.
Coach here.
Give me your assessment of the first half.
Is it what you expected?
Let's just like we talked prior to us coming on the floor, you just have to be consistent.
You plan a team every year to end the final 40, right that the door knocking and they go play consistent all game We got to do the same thing.
Good luck in the second half.
TRUMP Thank you, Scott 3231 Wilkinson County leads at halftime.
Well, we'll call you back to Dave Gardner when we return.

Living up to expectation, Wilkinson County leads it 32 to 31 over Winfield Academy, but indeed a great first half of high school basketball with a great second half on the way.
Right now, let's throw it courtside.
Scott Kozlowski standing by with a couple of special guest.
Scott.
Thank you very much, Steve.
I'm here with Tim Hill and he's the headmaster of Whitfield Academy.
And Dr. Hill Johnson, who is Wilkinson County's principal.
And Dr. Hill, him Excuse me.
Mr. Allen?
Yes, that's the first half for me.
What do you think this game.
Well, it's a great ball game.
We knew it was going to be a tremendous ball game.
We have a great we're playing a great team, Wilkinson County, fine athletes, and our work is cut out for us in this ball game.
We knew it would be.
What does it mean when your team gets into a state championship like this?
You got a pretty good history.
Well, we've been real blessed.
You know, we've been in force championship ballgames in the last five years, and it takes a lot of work to do that.
And our coach, coach Tyronn Johnson and his staff, they do a great job.
But in all those ballgames, I'll tell you, no teams as fine as this team tonight from Wilkinson County that we're playing.
Tell me about academics at Whitfield Academy.
What do you have cooking?
Well, we have a great school is a college prep school.
It's a growing school in suburban Atlanta.
We're real proud of it.
We're a crisis centered school and we have a terrific athletic program, by the way, that's growing.
Also, our basketball program has been our preeminent program in the last few years.
But all of our sports are really moving forward.
Excellent.
Well, apparently.
And good luck in the second half.
Thank you.
Dr. Johnson, give me your assessment of this first half.
Well, first of all, I'd like to say I'm extremely proud of our team and our coaches.
We've got some good coaches and some good players.
We're playing a very tough team and we'll feel the Academy.
They've been in the championship game several times and of course we're champions as well.
And since 1998 we won four champions with three championships.
So it's a it's a really a nip and tuck game and and whoever has the ball last will probably be the winner.
You were telling me earlier you want to talk a little bit about the academics and welcome to County.
Well, yes, we're extremely proud of them.
I'm to Wilkes and County with number two in graduation rate and middle Georgia.
We are number one in African-American male graduation rate, which is a problem around the state.
We one of the few field schools in the state where academic African-American male subgroup performs as well as all the other subgroups.
And we're extremely proud of that.
And we have a lot of good things going on at Wilson County.
We have a strong Fellowship of Christian Athletes program.
And, you know, we our motto is have good care to have great academics and have a positive mindset to be a success in life.
Well, thank you very much to you both.
And we've got a one point game.
Good luck in the second half back to that party.
Thank you, Scott.
A remarkable first half.
You know, Wilkinson County, again, has only had one game within 20 points this year, and that was against Whitfield Academy.
So indeed, they are great the second half on the way here and certainly looking forward to that right here.
Let's go ahead, throw it back to the table for some first half highlights.
John Wilkerson and Bill Hanson standing by.
Thank you, Dave.
And so I don't know if you got the impression I have, but Wilkinson County just and just looks like team like playing in the Super Bowl that we've seen where they just get conservative and tight and just not playing their game again.
Yeah you're right they hit not hitting on all cylinders, but Whitfield Academy has had a little bit something to do with that due to the fact that they've match their intensity from the opening jump.
It's been an awesome game.
Let's show you the first half highlights here from the Macon Cineplex in the Boys classic state title game this year.
Hillman Guys, it started early.
I think it was hitting some shots and that was a big play there by Whitfield Jerry, that was Martavis Adams and then there's Brandon Reed, and he's lit it up for which he's the one that's carried.
WHITFIELD Academy in the first half without him.
There have been some he's made big shots.
He's taken the ball to the basket, an outstanding job and again, fairly even game as the scoreboard reflects, although the turnover margin, I think they like to cut that number down a little bit but still fairly even in Gainesville.
Well, this is the big stat I like with the academy has seven offensive rebounds.
That's why they're still in it and the shot and that's huge, especially if you look at the size of Wilkinson County, seven rebounds to two.
That's the stat that really comes out to me.
Plus now with the Academy excuse me Wilkinson County eight for 13 from the free throw line.
Okay, we're getting ready to start the third quarter one point lead by the Warriors each week.

Welcome back to the Making Center Complex, a one point Wilkinson County lead as we head to the third quarter.
And right now we're gonna head to Scott Kowalsky.
We're here with Whitfield.
Coach Johnson to tell me a little bit about this first half one point game.
What did you tell your kids at halftime?
a couple of things.
First off, offensively, we've got to do a better job of shaping up after we set our double screens.
What's happening in the post players?
I mean, I mean, sit in the screens doing a real good job of setting screens, but they don't shape up.
So that allows for Wilkinson catapults players to stay home which means we can't get offensive penetration from our guards.
And then the second thing that we need to do a better job, we need to clean up the offensive boards.
All right?
They given us an opportunity, maybe beginning.
We are we're quick off the floor.
So I want to make sure that we can rebound the ball well offensively and make sure that our inside off offensive sets at our posts shape up properly.
Great.
But select the second half, too.
All right, Scott, you kind of surprised me about statement about the offensive rebounds because I thought they had done a pretty good job.
They have.
And a lot of the shots that they probably haven't got, the rebounds are the long rebounds, which he's probably not really happy about, and that's due to the fact that they've had to settle for those long shots due to the fact that their posts have not been shaping up, as you mentioned.
Well, if you're just joining us, we're at halftime.
Earlier in the day, we crowned the state championship and the girls class single a Hopkinsville in an exciting game by one over Landmark Christian 4948.
And that's the way devils are.
The class single AA Girls state championship.
And we're getting ready to crown a boys state championship and class single.
AA.
So far it's been as good as advertised.
Look for Wilkinson County really does pick it up and really get the uptempo game going.
What adjustments both teams need to make in the second half.
Well, I see Wilkinson County's probably going to go big here early in the third quarter and try to get a lot of high, low action and really exploit the smaller Wheatfield Academy down inside and look for Little Academy to keep giving it to Brandon Reed and driving and kicking him because he has got the hot hand in his carry, which is academy and that puts Whitfield up by two rebound double figures with a drive by Jones and he's fouled inside and could've been McConnell could have been playing I think we're going to get McConnell in that one Wilkinson's had a lot of success with this play instead of high ball screen and he can either come to the hot off side of it or he can go to the ball side of that screen and he's just going to Quintin Jones is so fast, he's going to take it right to the rack.
JONES He shoots 30, 71% from the line and just jinxed him, I guess.
But he's got to capitalize from the stripes Dontrelle Taylor checks in Coach Jeter goes big immediately, bringing Dontrelle Taylor in for Jamaal De and anti trip so Wilkinson with the rebound and Adams and that's a swat away by Reddick and a running opportunity for the Wolfpack Here's Hartley Reed he's still behind him he sure does but that was a the shot was wonderful.
But what was great is he didn't have the numbers pulled the ball back out, led his team to come down, kicked it back to Hartley.
Hartley went right back to him.
He hit the three.
Great job by the Wolfpack.
And I'm still amazed Wilkinson's team is still playing real tight basketball.
That was a great, great play.
Give it right back to the shooter off the turnover.
Super job read just the sophomore six three.
He carries a 3.2 GPA.
He says his favorite subject is English.
A great student over there at Whitfield Academy and he's had quite a stay term as well.
28 points, 15 rebounds in the first round and second longest.
He had 16.6 steals, 13 points against him, five in the quarters.
He's got four double doubles this year as well.
Believe the Wolfpack.
Well, no pressure in the back four by Addison Davids the senior on the Quintin Jones and Jones handles that pressure Cool He's a drive by Hillman What an elevator, Floyd He said they just make it look so smooth and elegant, like one dribble.
And he was going again.
In this type of game, you're going to have to make one dribble drive from the top of the key.
Basically the three point line in down.
If you have to put the ball on the floor more than one time, you're not open at this time.
By Reed, I got a feeling we need to hear more from him.
We haven't heard anything from this in the first quarter and Adams has made some noise today, pointed this out and to go go on.
But he's got to catch that ball immediately.
Don't recoil.
He's a foot and a half tall.
Anybody on the floor catch it and just take it to the rack and score gets it.
There you go.
Just take it strong.
There's that hesitation that you were talking about.
Just play third foul on Colin Redick.
That could prove to be huge as we move along on the counter for three one play, he's going to have to do and whistle inside foul on the wolfpack and now he's on Colin Bennett in this commodious short personal foul That's huge at six nine these were the tallest player that they have so we don't have anybody to counter with other than Freddy getting six for the block and Johnson is fouled with a cut launching the tempo starting to swing Wilkinson found his way.
This is the kind of pace they like like you talked about earlier, the frenetic pace up and down.
Get after it, let their athletes play.
Now Whitfield's a little shorthanded as well.
Cameron Bassey, another post plays out for here the knee ACL injury and here's a game five dance down.
Hey let's see.
It all starts with the Quinton Jones, his ability to penetrate and that's his Wilkinson cutting the lead back any time you have to rotate inside out, meaning coming from the baseline, you're going to be in trouble because you're going to expose your defense.
Tonight, a lot of open looks, layups and dunks.
I just think the Warriors got comfortable sitting out there.
They're coming ball bounce.
No fear that don't let that get you from scenario Hill And now the one in the frame Johnson out that puts Gary Johnson unofficially in double figures he's hunting trying to penetrate and reach in foul on the Quinton Jones trying to make the steal.
So as you can see it's starting to swing.
yeah, definitely.
But ever since Martavis Adams made that dunk, all of a sudden they just looked comfortable.
Wilkinson Coming from Davis on the pass it off to Reed let's see it and play that He's in the game with his body and the man to man.
Their pressures even picked up on the defensive end of the floor need that intensity to be successful and do things Guys really has a partially blocked and Taylor comes out with the rebound.
The Twin towers set by Wilkinson County is definitely becoming effective for them, and especially the fact the town ready to single attention for fouls is allowed inside of Adams.
Adams has a strip by Davis and he recovers.
Get it on.
so Martavis Adams is starting to have himself a nice second half.
He's a clean strip by Davis.
You never want to bring that ball down is a big man.
Keep it chin high above.
WHITFIELD He's brought in Darius Dalton.
He's an inside punch for one of five on the on the line today for Adams almost is this one as we saw in the earlier game this morning in the girls final, these free throws will come back to haunt you if you don't make them from the strike, Max.
Slowing down so much.
So Martavis Adams, one of 24. lead by Walker when you go funding for this program is provided by the Georgia High School Association.

Four point Lead by Wilkinson County.
As the Orioles are able to get more comfortable here in the second half playing game.
Definitely not solely due to their defensive pressure.
They've been able to get offense off their defense and their high low inside action has been very effective.
They have a90 run in the last 210 and again, that's coming off their defense and their ability to get the ball inside to the Twin Towers or the bookends of Taylor and Adams and Martavis, Saddam's already in double figures.
It's been an inside presence for Wilkinson County.
WHITFIELD Although the Colts through here, they took the lead and that's one the Warriors woke up last and able to through nice penetration by Denard Hartley with a drive into that lane drive in and kick out anytime you go inside, outside or outside, inside, back, outside, you're going to get some good things under five.
And it's a one point meaningful race.
Here's Tillman and Lamb's there and the foul and that's the eraser of a lot of woes.
You shoot a three and you miss, and then you've got one of your six nine guys.
It's the rebound and sticks back in on a chip high.
It's nice luxury And you got two big guys inside that can clean up the garbage.
I mean, it just improves your offensive efficiency knowing that you're going to get one or two cracks at it every time down the floor via a miss.
Or if you make four point lead for the Warriors And Pressure by Gary Johnson, let's get to the millions.
Casey does a nice job of setting that screen and then popping out at the top of the Huntley challenging the big guys and also inside.
Yeah Nathan tag and looks like it's going to be Dontrelle Tanner.
It's great job by Coach Johnson right now isolation you know how to get the ball and take it to the big man's chest Excellent job Only second team foul on Wilkinson Town in the first time on time.
The nice job of clearing out that backside and letting him go one on one.
Hardly quite senior play in his third state championship game.
We've kind of seen him grow up.
He was a small this guy down here, two point lead for the Warriors Now Wakefield trying to turn the pressure on doesn't turn into intensity Chris Taylor inside gets to grab the shirt there and Phil Taylor, you see that big bulky knee brace on his knee.
He tore his ACL last year and just got back in December.
And all you need talk to coach, don't talk to coach two on Wednesday.
On Thursday.
Since the state playoffs began, he's really gotten back to full strength.
And the one guy we haven't heard much from looks at today's Kelvin Collins sitting next to the coaching staff.
That guy Brandon Reaves has made a ton of noise so far.
He'll go the line.
He's a very, very good young player.
I really like WHITFIELD Academy's offense set that high screen.
They show up on that and they step back to screener for the reversal of the top down inside.
Really nice play third personal song game Johnson and rebound by Taylor Williams looking for an opportunity to run Nice pass beautiful pass and Adams with another throw again their ability with a Clinton Jones to beat his defender off the dribble He's going to expose that baseline for that dunk every time Quinton Jones can be tagged with the reach and foul see his ability to beat David's off the dribble.
You're just exposing yourself every you rotate from the inside out.
You may have to cheat in some of the sides and keep the baseline is protected at home.
We had a feeling that videotape might be shown somewhere in Stillwater, Oklahoma and get the Cowboy Nation excited.
So he does such a nice job of it, which I've said a thousand times.
He catches the ball very well.
Took away that Delta Wilkinson County NC trip for Whitfield can't afford to have any more of those as we're near the two minute mark here in the third quarter.
Whitfield in a man to man defense Tillman falling for Tillman for guard again scenario Hellman's six points unofficially six point lead hardly has it stopped by Johnson Yeah he or Taylor he's going to be Johnson called on the foul I'm sorry Quinton Jones.
Well, they got away with a little push there.
That's a third foul on Clinton Jones 15 foul ball.
Wilkinson Junod hardly does.
You take a look.
They coach cheater Aaron Jeter, three state titles under his belt as the Wilkinson County head coach.
He single time in 2008 title in 2002 double double until a turnover and Whitfield has a chance.
We really can't afford an empty trip when you get these kind of opportunities Addison David has done a nice job on Quinton Jones.
He's got great defensive feet.
Yeah, Tyrone Johnson calls him his defensive specialist.
He's doing the job so far in the state title game.
Davis Penetrating, challenging the big guys is in trouble from the beginning on.
That and now here comes back looking to run home with a beautiful pass because he said early in the broadcast defensive transition is a must you must get back on defense first.
Guys got to stop the ball.
Next guy gets the first pass in struggling third personnel on Charlie run and so Adams he's got a lot of opportunity on the free throw line today Justin Stubbs checks in for the Warriors double figures 15 points two rebounds shy of a double double.
I really look for that.
For Adams to excel on the next level.
Brandon Reed, who played since he lit up the first part of the third quarter and denied that time by Jamal de Stay with the Wolfpack with substitutions Trey Miller in for Whitfield right guard Neto with has done a good job with Collin Redick on the bench in that that that pass and the punch the foul a scenario Hillman busted out of the pack with that ball Let's see if they're going to do that after this scrum that there was a punch panic on tonight Hartley it's his third 18 foul scenario Hillman nine points on the afternoon this time but there's.
ADAMS my goodness.
Is he becoming a factor for the Warriors Great Quick off the bounce Jamaal base and a nice job on Brandon Reed the last three trips down the floor defensively with the seven Markkanen shot no good by Miller and scenario Hillman Portis he go back and forth but here's Adams.
MONTAGNE Yes, Adams has come alive in the third quarter for New Orleans, and the lead is nine nice shot and three.
MILLER They needed that is to stop the bleeding some all day and that's a wall for starting to pick up the pace.
Smart play by Jamal Dey.
Pull that ball out and run your offense for the last shot of the half offensive sounds to the human is getting a little faster.
Yeah, he lowered the shoulder but Coach Zener did not like that call one bit where he's them out of the game so he doesn't get another foul in the last 23 seconds of the quarter.
Could be right back in.
They'll start the fourth time.
He is so quick from the in line in line is a blur in the field setting the stage for the last shot was there with McConnell's back in the game look for a set for him.
I think the wolfpack need him to start heating up they got him just might have his first two point in the game Good play by Coach Johnson getting him back in the ballgame.
Just stay with the Warriors just the second remains in the third quarter.
Just when you think Wilkinson is flexing the muscle and you see him, you got him by the throat whips, it comes back, gets a big shot, and the momentum swings away.
my.
Now would have brought the house down if he would have made that.
I think Coach Jeter would have met John Trails Taylor about half court, three point lead for Wilkinson County.
We're back with the fourth quarter.
We're going to hand out the trophy when we return.
You've got my sense.
I can I was I wrote Annie Song when suddenly I was hypersensitive to how beautiful everything was.

Welcome back to the Macon Cineplex.
This is the hottest ticket in town.
Today's state championship games at the Macon Cineplex.
We're in the class Single Boys and Wilkinson County with a three point lead as we head to the fourth quarter.
We've got six games for you today as you take a look at Wilkinson County.
You only have one win closer than 20 points.
And that came with a win over Whitfield Academy back in January 15th.
They have one loss and that was the Swain's world.
Back in December scenario Hillman was hacked inside and they'll shoot some free throws.
Nice play that brought Taylor up to the high post.
They kicked it inside to him from Jones and Hillman.
Went baseline hard.
Nice job.
That's the fourth foul on Kelvin McConnell.
The reason that play works is because on the other half the post was Adams and you cannot leave him if.
You do.
They're going to dump it down in on the other low post super job and come all day checks in.
Samuel Hillman As we mentioned at the top of the show, we were in the Crimson Tide of Alabama College.
Next year.
We'll be surprised if he becomes the heir apparent alone still alive.
He's a cousin to the team's one zero with Academy down by five.
We had to do it all day, seven days, then an outstanding job on him, on the defensive end of the floor, neutralized.
We'd sit down, sit down to see it go fast, little boy.
Foul.
Looks like it's going to go against Wilkinson family that stays at his fourth to second foul on Martavis Adams.
Nelson Brandon reads the line and important free throws for Whitfield deep some points of the clock stop.
Plus it allows you to set your press one down averaging 12 points per game.
And he's got 22 today, but still need the three Charlie Reddick in the game and Charlie running comes in and column.
Reddick still on the bench with four personal fouls Wilkinson County in a 1 to 2 zone and there's Hillman scenario Hillman with a graceful elevation 5954.
Getting to the point where possessions are precious and lead and a rebound inside by Johnson knocked it away and stay with the Warriors never want to try to save the ball Throw the ball back in under your basket because more likely it's going to be an assist here, Tony.
If you're going to fall out of bounds, just take it.
Throw it out of bounds.
Wilkinson County up by three.
Last won the state championship in 2000, 2000 plus double back in the state title game for the first time since along with a typical move by him and couldn't convert.
And here come the Wolfpack.
Okay, this is going to run looking for the score and Huntley can't finish today he fouled.
You might have been doing filming on Dontrelle Taylor you got Taylor tied on the foul ball.
Great job.
Take the ball again into the shot Blocked this just used the rim to block the shot block his hand You want to get your inside shoulder on his chest inside the second marker and down Put him in jail.
Every free throws is magnified now I'm one of two.
I'm starting to feel a little bit the tension of the championship game here in the fourth quarter with Wilkinson County up by four dealing with the Aaron jitters he's 19 and Wilkinson County got three state titles here you see little yellow bandage there on his hand you know want be with both these coaches one first class program they're so well disciplined in the play so far Great pass to Tyler Johnson 16 has Athens Academy playing in the state championship game for the first time in five seasons and right over 2000 feet into that team, Tim Morris flat land.
Yes.
Armstrong brought him back the next year with virtually a new team.
Remember, they had six freshmen, right?
Ryan LAMB was the only like returner and part of that group.
And 2004 was Do not Hartland and tell them McConnell will play in the third state championship game.
They think they've lost the previous two.
They've played in 2004 and 2006 bucks and won now by Whitfield Academy.
They're going to box meaning Davis is going to guard Hillman anywhere he goes on the floor, man to man for the other four guys are going to play zone and knocked away by Huntley and Hillman one inbound for Wilkinson County stepped on the line.
Well, you got to watch yourself on the floor.
So Whitfield will have a chance.
Need a bucket here to Johnson on him And there's Reed coming off a screen that set Brandon Reed So you're five and a half minutes three point lead never turns in and you turn over by Wilkinson County.
The box and run is coming effective here for Whitfield Academy.
Now a couple of things you want to try to look at against that is don't let that freak out your offense.
Use the defenders as screeners.
Run off them and use them as screeners tell them.
McConnell checks back in for Whitfield Academy.
A very quiet game for him.
But I think in the last 5 minutes, he's ahead of because we can do it all follow.
He's been trying Collin Redick is check back in as well Let's see what's happening here he is with the basketball as it slips and a turnover by the wolfpack He's Johnson Jerry Johnson finishes again if he had to put the ball on the floor more than one time going to the basket from the top of the key you're not going to be able to get the defense for both these teams.
It's just so fast.
He's going to converge on the ball.
You're never going to get it back off the ground in the concessions anymore.
Huntley with a little left hook and rebound by Wilkinson you look Quinton Jones nice board Gary Johnson drives the baseline and hits and the lead has ballooned That's for a timeout here for timeout so we'll see how Academy and the Warriors fans are up and cheering.
What a great crowd we've got here at the making Cineplex.
The hottest ticket in town.
Nice bounce late on and the help and that was made by solely by Martavis Adams stepping back and basically having a moving screen.
this is a second and free state championship games to come here and Georgia public broadcasting class Dudley girls follow us followed by the class boys and then we'll Crown State champions in class AA and boys and girls the warrior chant McConnell back in the game for Whitfield Academy for a quick hitter to him for him home he seems kind of welcome some time not allowing us especially the Sooners lead in the corner right under for his partner driving his reddish and down range for that huge basket Nice job Steph spin Nice drop step, spin move.
Four point lead is a beautiful drop.
Step, spin, move, drop up, elevate, fall through.
Nice job.
I missed that.
Some foul on Reddick Man to man by Whitfield Academy Brandon Reed fighting off that screen.
what a huge basket.
That's a nightmare to defend John because the foot and Jones is so fast off the dribble he's so quick he can either come to the high side of that screen or he can go straight to the basket on that screen there.
He's going straight to the bucket.
And if you rotate inside out, you're going to give up the dunk there.
They didn't rotate inside out and he just took the ball right to the basket.
And Quentin Jones gives Wilkinson County a seven point lead, three and a half to go along with fouls, really making some noise.
A huge contingent of Oriole fans have made the trip they're making, and if that's the shot coach and so here comes Wilkinson County it's wanted they screen on the ball and the Quinton Jones out.
This time Hillman flies in more and he walks Nice rebound though really elevated well to get that and can he get up for the left fielder Terry now my guys think we've got to start putting together some possessions that end with the basket Well they need some stops on the defensive end the four most important and I would help as well now the inside side in the back to this Adams staff big shot by Tony Randall since then here comes the press stops they kept his composure.
You saw the running jump.
Could have been a foul there but not Martavis Adams at that step in What a game by the senior and timeout four Whitfield time notes Davis outlines has he been a big presence for the Wilkinson County role in this whole tournament He's basically turned it into his showcase.
And so if you're Tyrone Johnson, when you're telling your team you're down by seven.
First of all, don't panic.
Number, let's get good shots within our offense.
Let's do what we did to get here.
Don't take quick shots and don't have people shooting the ball in situations that aren't in our system.
Let's get the ball to our big scorers, i.e.
Brandon Reid or looking for Kevin Connell, or you got the big guy who's made the last 14 points down the floor in Collin Redick.
Let's look to go to those three guys.
And the biggest thing now is you got to stop them on the defensive end of the floor.
You're not going to beat him by outscored him you've got to stop him somewhere down the road.
Do you see Woodfield picking up the defensive intensity?
Definitely.
I mean if especially if they score, if they score they're going to be able to jump into their variations of their presence and to get a quick turnover.
And look at the fans in Wilkinson County, they come and they came in big numbers and they're vocal.
The big thing is that Redick cannot foul.
I mean when you're sitting here, you're going to have to be able to stop the clock.
He can't be the one that's fouling good look at Martavis Adams is six nine senior had 23 points in the semifinal game He's having a huge game in the final as a senior his last high school game he's winning.
Let's say championships.
He's on Hartman and McConnell three alone.
He's a big time player, man.
What a big time player.
Now they can set the press.
He's taken by the warrior.
That's Derrick Johnson finish and a big rebound by Tony Bennett even though they didn't get a steal, they got the quick shot they wanted, which changed possessions.
That's as good as a turnover.
Look at inside players.
Reddick and Adams got to kind of control the scenario.
Hillman has a stolen by Huntley and Coleman.
We need to change his side because Martavis Adams is there and we're under 2 minutes out of bounds.
And you stay with the Warriors.
Look for trying to get a quick steal here and maybe looking to get a quick foul.
And they've turned up that defensive intensity.
And now with Quentin Jones, there's one man, no Adams whistle inside a Wilkinson can foul and that's not what they needed like when I listen the him I was trying to make a highlight reel so when you're in this moment of the game the up by four pull it back out Yes means you've got enough points to win your opponent.
Now is the clock and most importantly, time ready to go the free throw line in the to leave it at the time kick it off and Colin ready got in the foul trouble there's no his presence in the fourth quarter No makes the first free throw he has a very very good young player his post skills are coming along, although he's shy in nature.
Colin Johnson trying to get him to toughen up, getting out.
He hits two big free throws and it's a two point lead.
But Wilkinson, tell me, no call timeout.
You can feel the tension in this building.
Well, what you want now for Whitfield Academy is you want to try to get a quick steal on the inbound.
If they don't get the quick steal, you may want to think about going for a quick foul to stop the clock, which then now makes this account, you have to come down under pressure and make the free throws or let him get it in, bring it up, and then maybe get some form of a halfcourt trap in there, one, three, one set that they ran so well in the semis against Terrell County.
We had some exciting games already here in Macon by Signal Girls Championship by Hopkinsville, when a great comeback by a point.
Now here in the boys championship game it's it's a tight win as well with Wilkinson only up by two and a half to go well under a minute and a half to go.
What a great day of high school basketball here in Macon today.
So.
it's just it's great every year.
It's so exciting.
The place is jam packed full of people and the games yesterday at the Gwinnett Center, since then, y'all and and North Cross played a classic game class five eight boy and Brandon Reed is dad is coming out partying yet again in this tournament.
He is really one of the best young players in the state full.
Defensive pressure almost a turnover but that's to him all day and the swatted by Rowland for four fans Leslie missed opportunity there for Whitfield they get a foul but Gonzalez loses it Here's Adams with under a minute and a near steal by David Hayes The turnover that was a crazy 30 seconds for a 32nd time out here.
No time out.
WHITFIELD Right there He'll call timeout.
That's him all day.
Didn't need the points.
I mean, just pull the ball back out and let them foul.
You mean that was the only way you could give him back the ball by Miss?
Not sure if I got his fingernails left.
This is the one.
Those type of games in fun.
It's been awesome.
Tyrone Johnson is in my state championship since 2003.
This is his third opportunity since he just doesn't get any better now, this is what work for all year long for the summer season.
For a situation just like this.
Yeah there's nothing that do.
We talked about the opening show.
The two top teams in class, similar boys in Georgia, and it's lived up to the gong.
Definitely the two best clubs in the West come down here to this side in in the championship game.
And this is what it's meant to be.
Well, the Whitfield Academy, the feeling Wilkinson County a year ago in the state semifinals and then again in January 15th with Wilkinson, Tony winning that game.
But as we discussed, is the value of the ball each and every possession.
And then you've got to value it.
You just can't take it for granted.
Coming down and trying to get highlight dunks with a minute here and a minute there to go.
The possessions and time we score is the most important thing.
Wilkinson County Yeah, he hasn't helped himself with the free throw shooting blocked for a staggered screen by one getting a hands a read on McConnell and a foul and scenario Hillman seems to be stumbled on That's the fourth foul Hillman Brandon Reed there you go.
He's been a hero so far, just a sophomore.
Coach Johnson has done a real nice job today of getting him open.
Looks within their offense.
And how cool is that young sophomore ice water in his veins?
He hits the first free throw one more and he gets 30 on the day.
Obviously, as Lindsey comes away with the win tonight, outstanding state tournament, one of 12.
So they've got to come to the ball and Adams open Where's Brook Wilkinson town in the fall Marshall Huntley scenario Hillman to the line Smart foul So now you've got to make these free throws under pressure but if he does making the score one possession game exactly and you don't need to jack up a quick three if he's go down most and Ariel Hillman better get used to big time atmospheres like this heading into the SCC the most down and the foul inside huge rebound for Wilkinson County you got a block out on those free throws again the same scenario if these two free throws go down you do not need to come down and shoot a quick three come down get the ball inside and eyes at the foul because they don't want to get the foul and try to get the two points there again, try to get the quick steal.
If you don't get it foul, put them back on the line for a foul on as Davis said Wilkinson County can't you have a free throw now whistle Kennedy has got to pinch hard on this block out another one to tip and Reddick with the rebound and the wolfpack only down by one call timeout My goodness Phil Hansen this is what this is why you get the big bucks to play.
Now look for Winfield Academy to try to get the Bradley inside either eight or Reddick having going for quick shot to penetrate it and have Reed McConnell open it.
The wings have given right here.
It has broken down.
So you, Stephen, the girls came in there and the boys going to load up like a lucky penny.
Wilkins I'm telling you, this took a long time in the game.
They called it the free throw line.
This for down the stretch.
Then they got the benefit of the Miss BLOCK.
Got to get it again.
But you get a value.
The ball.
And again, this is a second And so more high school basketball games here at the Lincoln Center plants in New York went on to kick a double in boys and girls last time out will follow this one.
Coming up, boys and girls.
Later in the day, Leslie and DRC will play in the girls double state championship game.
And we're done here with the boys class single-A state championship game.
Now, if you're garden the banner which they're not going to do in a man to man defense, finally with an open wound, a foul scenario, homing in that's on him he's gone Great play again.
They came off that high screen that we talked about.
You had Hartley drive into the lane.
If he gets off it, take it to the basket.
If they converge on the preserve, kick it out to the side for the shot and scenario.
Hillman committed a personal foul and should this game overtime that'll be a big loss we'll bring in the other big fella Dontrelle Tanner the scenario home and what a great high school career.
He's had 13 points on the day, so he's hoping his high school career ends for the state championship.
And as you noted, Hartley, his third state championship game shooting to win it played as a freshman in 2004, Last year as a junior, both ended up in losses, his last opportunity to win the state championship.
And here he was at the free throw line down by one ballgame.
And this is what he dreamed of probably his entire high school career, a chance to step on the line with a free throw to win the state title, The Wolfpack.
If this goes down, watch for Whitfield to run a man to man, press for the center fielder.
No one guarding the inbound and trying to get the lob pass.
Henson has the lead and a timeout by Wilkinson County 13 seconds to go again they're going to run their man to man press that is Will Whitfield academy and whoever the man that's guarding the out of bounds man that is not going to play him he's going to be in the middle of the floor, kind of like Deion Sanders trying to get that.
And everyone else is going to pull out, deny front their offensive man, make them have to throw it over the top where that center fielder can come in there and pick the pass in.
The right guys are going to do the same thing.
They're going to play three quarter fun and make everything have to come towards the ball.
So Wilkinson County is going to use a lot of clock to get the ball up the floor.
And the flip side, look for Wilkinson County to bring their back guys up, send their front people to the front, try to get the lot pass all the way down to the end to score on the offensive end of the floor.
We want to switch on all screens, switch on all screens, guard the front of the rim, the amount is the most dangerous man on the floor because a lot of times we'll throw to the wing will step on the back end of the floor.
He'll take it, go 94 feet, kick it to the open man down low and take it to the basket himself.
WILKINSON Time balance and pressure in the back there's the inbound and then they drop below the level.
They recovered the foul.
my goodness.
On film.
Well, it will be his fifth and Justin Stubbs.
Holy mackerel.
And he may got him with the body as soon as the game.
Yeah, he may have got him with the body and then follow them.
And sophomore Justin Stubbs steps at the line, keeping perfectly the free throw line today.
But these are huge under 10 seconds to go in the passing lane.
State Championship game two free throws, first time not good enough.
Two shots.
We talked about free throws in the first game.
Now they've got free throws in the second game.
He's got to score from the strike.
Five straight misses in the free throw line.
I reckon some time to miss today but the rebound and he's so down you have to box out on the free throw line.
Look Quintin Jones you going to take that inside foot closest to the man that's your garden as close to you in step on his thigh That was all.
And now Wilkinson County they won.
They've missed six straight free throws and the junior now has his opportunity.
We'll time.
I got a feeling something is going to happen for Harrison again If this free throw goes down.
If his free throw goes down, look for Wilkinson down.
He'd have token pressure.
Make them have to bring the ball up to Austin Street has a chance to win it.
We go all the time.
Free basketball.
I'm reaching down into You may have kind of cramping as pass.
I hope that's all it is.
I believe that is.
They got his toe pushed back.
I believe he's got a cramp in his calf.
You don't want a foul him and you may have a panic.
Extended it when he tried to push off at that very end.
Well, we go to overtime here in the class single-A state championship game for boys and everything, everything advertised.
And if you take a look at Brandon Reed's last ditch effort, so as they go into overtime, Wilkinson County will be without scenario.
Hillman solid out Colin Reddick is solid out for Litchfield Academy.
The two big guns are missing.
Now, I've got to say that the three men will be on your team.
Saddam's Huge game has had a big play.
It's been everything that you've advertised in this championship game.
It's 69, 69.
Both teams get one extra timeout in the overtime here.
Really?
So you got 4 minutes to play over now.
Each team will get one one minute timeout and there's a little time period you play 4 minutes and but this is honest with the big ten tournament the ABC terms yes they've had great great games down the stretch.
How about this state tournament here?
Some say this is yesterday we had a couple of classic games at the Gwinnett Center.
We've had one Girls League team game, that championship game went to the buzzer.
This one goes overtime.
What are we going to high school basketball?
And you see it all here on GPB.
I'm glad to see that Reid is okay.
Yeah, he's back in the game.
Wakefield Academy will control the team tonight.
Rightly so.
You cannot dump that shoulder.
If you suck that shoulder nine times out of ten, you're going to get that far.
Call.
That's his fourth.
They cannot afford to lose him.
Well, he's the rock of this team, so he wants the mismatch problem, too, because he can like we saw at the very end of regulation, he was able to take you off that on ball screen and go right to the basket hard.
And that was 5000.
That's five for him.
HARTLEY So he's gone.
So team players have found out to look for the academy and free pass to Adams knocked away by Turner Well when you feed the post John that ball has got to be a bounce pass.
Plus, you need to be below the foul line to break that angle on the defensive player from all day with Kelvin McConnell on him.
Dustin Subs scored the first two points of overtime.
Nice pass by Jamal Take the dribble penetration and kick Reid falls down He's tied up possession rule goes to Wilkinson County Well look for the press and flatten Jones fool customer He's got to take over the game for Wilkins again the scenario humans fouled out in the fourth quarter it's too late Adams a solid inside that was a BD he thought that was a great catch.
Octavius Adams has made a living at the free throw line today.
Look for Wisconsin County to go inside all day long.
Now it's know in there his second personal foul double double from Octavius Adams on the afternoon one of two big rebound by Wilkinson County he'll keep possession that's three straight trips on the foul line that they've been able to get the rebound off to miss wild shot no good and here comes Whitfield academy with Reed breaking behind the defense with a pass is too far.
You've got to value the ball still that fulcrum pressure by Whitfield Academy some all day easily breaks it Here's Terry Johnson can't finish Martavis Adams big rebound how that not go down I don't know my goodness just didn't have the touch Holy smokes and everything but the Wilson was in the basket.
He would not go in.
I think we've all seen it all now Leader.
in that game is that everything Kelvin McConnell has been quiet today.
Here comes the high screen pop McConnell looking to drive kicks it out.
Gary Johnson did a good job on him those three the one 2 to 5 and so Whitfield academy now has 90 trips in this overtime period.
Here comes the man to man press.
It seems we had all the momentum heading into the overtime.
NEWTON That's Tony Reddick battling for control.
This Adams Whitfield Academy does a nice job of once you get the ball in, they chase you into a trap where they basically run behind you.
So you're going helter skelter out of control into, a trap situation or a block or a charging situation.
Martez Adams community's third personal foul.
So truly ready to step off the line.
He's the twin brother of Colin Reddick at six four, £180, just a sophomore.
How to use your legs in those free throws, Chris Leading with 614 and £25, 1623 Atlanta 261 possession game.
Don't jump the pass Johnson easily fakes the press pass right on Quinton Jones No free pass in the paint on the rebound by Charlie Ruddy nice by Davis And now McConnell picks it up He's down for good for the great pass great pass Whitfield has the lead now has to go in the overtime.
Gary Johnson spots a player this is Dylan banjos now John Tyner.
All right.
This is a college game.
I don't see anybody in this building sitting down.
No, I mean, you can't get one person in a place.
Big shot there by Gary Johnson, the senior six two.
He wants to win a state championship for the Warriors.
If you take a look at Coach Jeter, three state title rings under his watch, one fourth score.
Both teams were able to get those three point looks due to dribble penetration.
But you pass the ball and Tyrone Johnson mapping out a play for the Wolfpack for the fourth and coming in right Brandon you can hear the pride in the building and definitely again watch for the high ball screen the roll to the basket, kick to the wings for the shot.
If the wings are covered, the man coming off that screen, whether it's Miller or David, are going to take the ball to the basket to score.
So Whitfield down by two and then half remaining steal a tip by Johnson.
We see that pass coming suddenly go by, turn away and Cleveland comes away with the rebound the steal by Miller and here comes Wilkinson County Jam all day leading the break inside Adams all alone they don't need a three another timeout that's Mr. Simon right there Easiest pass that he's gotten all day definitely is he That's what happened to trying to scramble and get some traps.
You're going to give up something but you don't want to leave him with a brilliant afternoon.
Martavis Adams is had for the Warriors.
Wilkinson County has boy been here before?
Yes, we have.
When you think about the Left Field Academy there with a program that Tom Johnson runs there, well, both these teams in schools have just had, as we said, basically turn this whole tournament into their own invitational.
I'd say over the last six years, you know, for ten years they've been in the finals or the Final Four, at least six or seven times.
Martavis Adams, after this game, will wear the orange and black of Oklahoma State.
He's going to be a good looking big 12 player under a minute big possession for the Wolfpack.
A lot of time, John.
A lot of time.
Brandon Reed in the game now with the ball has it locked away the little to recover and Miller over the big fella not there great rivalry with a three basket by Brandon Reed the four foot trap that Jones finds Johnson out of a three and two Adams can't handle the pass Chris Redding was able to get the loose ball but travel now look for Whitfield to try to get a quick steal here quick steal all out denied quick steal quick foul under Tony that's Miller and a lot of him huge here is the steal on the 10 seconds commit a foul so more does come this third and lost about 5 seconds to play the huge free throws for the Quinton Jones because he can turn this into a two possession game if he gets a pair and this next to him I put the trophy to the Wilkinson County and I'll make it a two possession game.
What's the county is going to go small.
They bring in Tony McRae in for Taylor.
He misses plays out of bounds He's fouled one a play ball acquitting Jones for the state title No one blocked out to shoot it.
my goodness he'll shoot a pair one on four on the rebound Yikes.
Hey they still got a chance.
Amazing.
They still got a chance.
He just needs to make this one.
Elizabeth three of ten free throws down the stretch this next free throw.
Benkert Wilkinson County four point lead.
Do not foul.
If you're Wilkinson County, let them dribble the ball up the floor was able to get the loose ball but travel now look for Whitfield to try to get a quick steal here quick steal all out denied quick steal quick foul under Tony That's Miller and that's out of him Huge hail is the steal in the 10 seconds need to commit a foul so Moore does and it's his third in the last about 5 seconds to play the huge free throws for the threat and Jones because he could turn this into a two possession game if he gets a pair in this next to him.
I put the trophy to the Wilkinson County you know, make it a two possession game.
What's the county is going to go small they bring in Tony McRae in for Taylor he misses plays out of bounds he's fouled What a play by LA Quentin Jones who won the state title.
No one blocked out to shoot it.
my goodness.
He'll shoot a pair one on four on the rebound.
Yikes.
Hey, they still got a chance.
Amazing.
They still got a chance.
Just needs to make this one.
It's about three of ten free throws down the stretch.
This next free throw Benkert for Wilkinson County four point lead do not foul If you're Wilkinson County, let them dribble the ball up the floor and read a split three right there on the Wilkinson County the Warriors other champions up first single and this place is going bananas What a year by the Warriors They have wanted it and they they got it.
They are the 27 boys single-A state.
What a great game.
What a great game by Woodfield Academy.
That tip your hat off to them They didn't Outstanding job they do every year first state title since 2010 so the warriors and that guy marks his Miss Adams with a great for the senior.
He and Brandon Reed are probably the MVP of the game.
Those two would be my vote.
Now let's go down the scores last.
He's got the winning coach.
Coach, Coach, first of all, congratulations on your fourth state championship.
Tell me about this win.
Well, you know it when you play Whitfield.
Every second counts.
So you gotta you got to catch attack, attack, play all game long because those guys just keep coming at him.
And I take my hat off to them.
He played well, but we had a group to step up and just hanging that hanging in there.
Got it done.
Well, congratulations enjoy it.
Thank you.
Thank you, John.
Thank you.
Scott Clouse, Wolski, what a great game by the wilkinson county warriors as they win the class single AA Boys state championship.
