Major funding for this program is made possible in part by Georgia's Electric Membership Corporation, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, IBEW Local 613 Atlanta Black Cobia, Georgia's Dodge Dealer, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
And by viewers like you.
Live from the Macon Coliseum, it's the 26 GHC basketball championships featuring the girls single-A finale, The Atkinson County Lady Rebels taking on the Southwest Atlanta Christian Lady Warriors.
And good morning, everybody, and welcome as championship weekend rolls on on GPB, I'm Jim Tanaka along with Phil Hansen.
Phil, one word to describe both teams.
I believe it's balance.
You're right, Jim.
That's the key word of the day balance.
Both teams have a dominant perimeter game that can dictate and set the tempo of the game offensively and defensively.
Also, like all championship teams, they're able to establish that inside scoring presence.
One key player for Atkinson County, definitely number 25 Baylor Williams Gala.
Williams is a big time player.
She's a winner in every facet of the game.
She goes inside outside, can shoot the 15 footer, wants the ball in clutch situations and of course Kayla in the starting five to go along with the rest of these four players that you'll see it's Tiffany Thomas is one of the key starters for the team as is Keesha Hall, Alyssa Thomas and Jenny Nixon.
So a balanced attack for Atkinson County and a coach Carl McGowan has done a great job in leading this team is a sixth year, of course a 13 two record is very good.
Southwest Atlanta Christian, on the other hand, started off with a bumpy road but bounced back.
Coach Thompson did a nice job of getting that team to play collectively and together.
And once he got that, he rode the back of Mariah Chandler all the way to the state final.
And of course, Chandler is one of the key players today.
She's wearing number 42.
She's a super player.
She kind of reflects a lot of like Williams and Atkinson County.
She can go inside outside once the ball gives them that strong inside presence offensively and just a big time winner.
And Chandler talked a lot about Chan a little bit here.
She's a freshman.
I mean what a great player, but she's one to watch.
Just keep your eye on her because in a few years down the road, she may be playing somewhere locally.
All right.
So that's southwest Atlanta Christian.
They're starting lineup is a very balanced attack as we were talking earlier as well.
And here they are.
It's Pinkett friend Brown joining Chandler is also Scott.
So again, another balanced attack there.
Well press his friend when she gets the rebound, the break begins.
She's able to take that ball from in line to end line nonstop.
And she came up big against Jefferson in the semi.
And Jermaine Thompson, of course, is your head coach for southwest Atlanta Christian now will be joining public address announcer Eddie Ashley for the starting lineups for today's single-A championship promotion of good sportsmanship.
At today's event, the only good thing, I guess, is good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.
Welcome to Macon, Georgia, and the Class AA Girls State Championship and this afternoon's game we will have the Atkinson County rebels with a record of 30 wins and two losses dressed in red as your visitors on the scoreboard board and the Southwest Atlanta Christian Warriors with a record of 19 wins and 14 losses dressed in white as your home team and somebody else, it may have your attention for the starting line ups.
First, for Atkinson County at guard number ten, a five foot seven senior Tiffany Thomas at guard number 12, a five foot six senior Kisha Holm at guard number 21, a five foot one senior Alissa Thomas At forward number 25, a six foot senior, Galen Williams at center number 45, a six foot junior.
Ginny Nixon and Gibson County's head coach Carl McGowan.
And now for southwest Atlanta Christian at guard number 24 and five foot five, Sophomore Breanna Blough at guard number 21, a five foot six sophomore Precious free in at setter number 32, a five foot 11 sophomore left hander Scott at forward number 42, a six foot one freshman Mariah Taylor at guard number one, a five foot six senior, Corey Pickett at Southwest Atlanta.
Christian's head coach, Jermaine Thompson.
There's your starting lineups, the single-A championship game coming up next.
Atkinson County and Southwest Atlantic Christian as championship weekend rolls on GPP.
Let's get it started here.
Let's get started.
Even after 37 years, it's still fresh to crossroad.

This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station on.
And welcome back to the Macon Coliseum for the single-A championship game between Atkinson County and southwest Atlanta.
Christian.
Let's go courtside now to Scott Kozlowski.
Scott, I talk to both coaches just a little while ago about their keys to the game.
And strangely enough, they're almost exactly opposite.
First of all, for Atkinson County Coach McGowan telling me they're going to have to use their speed and good transition to get some fast break points.
He also told us, girls, make your free throws because that's what win ball get wins ballgames.
He also said don't get into foul trouble.
His biggest concern is rebounding.
He feels his team is not as big, so he hopes that his outside their outside game will compensate.
Then on the other side, with southwest Atlanta Christian Coach Thompson telling me almost the opposite, his team needs to rebound to win their downfall.
Could be the transition game.
And lastly, execute, execute, execute and just play your game, Jim.
All right.
Thanks, Scott.
Phil True.
We've got to execute, right?
That kind of sums it up.
I also think depth is going to be a major factor.
Who can get to the other person's bench.
Quick is will play a major role.
Southwest Atlanta Christian off the tip and thrown out of bounds Southwest Atlanta Christian in the white uniforms are going from left to right on your TV's screen of course action Atkinson County in the red uniforms going from right to left as we begin the single-A championship from the Macon Coliseum, man to man, pressure right off the bat by southwest Atlanta.
Christian Lesser Thomas as your point guard.
She's mostly all right hand.
See if they force her left to go double.
They'll run and jump there And she did try to go right handed and drew the foul.
Well, they probably scouted more than likely, but they're going to try to take her right hand away.
Also, they're going to try to force her to the baseline or to the sideline where those two lines can then become a defender.
Will one defender now can become two or two can become 4000?
Breanna Brown, of course, her first down, the team first here in the early going.
That's Paul and Atkinson County looking for that first good shot go for the ballgame.
They continue to pass around good movement.
South Carolina Christians in a box in one meaning they got four people playing zone and they've got a man to man situation and Williams Thomas tries to drive the lane good defense by southwest Atlanta Christian and here come the Warriors This is Brandon Brown at two counties inside Chandler off off the mark and back comes back into Kennesaw.
That's a good shot.
She's going to make that more times than not if she gets that ball continuing on the low block, Thomas swings right side.
That's Keisha Hall.
Doesn't have a shot.
Looks down low Now to the corner.
That's Thomas.
And they swing it around the perimeter again.
Just when we're talking about Jim, they've got, like a box and one on Gayla Williams crack.
It's in county where everywhere she goes, she'll be played man to man.
And they're going to bump there.
Now, Chandler will go to the wing and now Brown picks her up.
Nixon hits the jumper.
Nice efforts and County is the first team on the on the scoreboard hits to nothing rebels see that offensive jump shot when you make them that only doesn't get your offensive in a rhythm it allows you to set your defensive tackle, get your defense in rhythm.
Now they're able to jump right into that one, two, one, one.
Press.
There's that full court pressure.
You get trap double team, the inbound, and they break that press pretty quickly and the Warriors go the length of the floor as Breanna Brown scores the hoop and we're tied with two.
Nice job.
You want to punish that press because if you can keep taking it right at it, sooner or later they're going to come out of it.
Now Atkinson County breaks the press and in traffic loose ball.
And here come the rebels.
Excuse me, the warriors.
This is friend.
And as we talked about in the early going and the precious friend is one of the best athletes on the team.
When she gets the break, when she gets the rebound on the defensive end, the breaks is off to the races.
She's a one man fast break by herself and friend will shoot to her first team.
First foul was on number ten Tiffany Thomas for first personal and of course the first team foul a third of the team's points in the playoffs are scored on the free throw line.
You've got to be able to capitalize loose ball underneath And this one belongs to southwest Atlanta Christian to three zone by Atkinson County in dead ball situations from the inbound Mariah Chandler misses the jumper back comes Atkinson County that passed down court pressure caused that Jim that's exactly right warriors take it over Atkinson counties in a131 zone they're going to match out of it Trapp in the corner.
Brown to pick it perfect off base it's what did you try to do against the zone is make it stretch and then attack that zone where it's flexible right there, right?
I'd say between the second and the first marker.
So thinking of Brown of scores for the Warriors may lead it 4 to 2.
Atkinson County breaks the press but has some trouble and now a back pass down under the hoop intended for Jenny Nixon and the Warriors get the ball back.
Full court pressure continued by Atkinson County.
Another bad pass, this time picked up by southwest Atlanta.
Christian that's precious friend gets it back down to the point guard Brianna Brown she resets the offense.
So that's always going to be open in the middle there.
The back cut right there, precious friend.
Off the mark.
Back comes Atkinson, down to right and the rebels slow it down a bit led by Melissa Thomas.
She now adding 16 points again Atkinson County needs to squeeze whoever is guarding Williams to free her up is four people are really being guarded per say Thomas swings it left side still can't find a good shot.
Atkinson County now they get down low to Jenny Nixon who goes off the glass.
That's just a great individual play by Williams.
Heck of a pass by Nixon.
That's Nixon's second bucket.
We're tied at four right now.
Look for Atkinson of to trap the inbound pass the first pass good inbounds pass and they break the pressure That's Briana Brown going the distance Nixon's got to step up there and stop the ball.
The most important thing on the floor is the ball.
You've got to stop that.
Brown fouled on the play down for 5000.
Jenny Nixon of Atkinson County free throws very important especially in the championship game again you get one third of your points in the finals are in the semi's from the free throw line and brown hits them both and it's six four with Southwest and Christian is able to score make free throws are able to set up that press and come out to cost effective that's basically efficiently nice move underneath and the hoop by Alyssa Thomas she does love to penetrate and we're tied at six That's a great job by Williams what she did there she played Breanna Brown's right hand since she's right handed so now she's going to throw across her body which was deflected in it looked for one maybe to hit the backboard if she doesn't move to the side.
Corey Pickett with the inbounds pass, Atkinson County with the steal.
This is Thomas driving the lane.
So, yes, she's all right handed, but she's pretty good at hand.
Jim Thomas gives Atkinson County an eight six lead back come the Warriors off the glass the miss by Scott rebound and the shot put up by Brown's no good And that goes to Atkinson down It's a little bit of nerves this guy's got to finish that she's got to keep her head up go up there with a strong shoulder.
Look at the top corner of the square for a thumb down and lay it in tempo, starting to pick up there.
So you're going to go back and forth.
There's both teams like you talked about in the opening, have such dominant guard play that they can dictate and set the tempo.
Atkinson Giannis trying to break the full court pressure by Southwest Atlanta Christian pass down low to Nixon intercepted by southwest Atlanta Christian and they're on the run again Breanna Brown the point guard that's going to be a bounce pass into the post and three point attempt by Brown off the rim back comes Atkinson County Here's precious sprint on the run.
All right.
Excuse me that's Thomas Thomas wins it left side to Tiffany Thomas.
Yes, this is the X-Factor right there.
Tiffany Thomas gives Atkinson County the luxury of going inside out.
She's a great swing player.
Tiffany Thomas gives Atkinson County an 11 six lead with 247 left.
First quarter.
You don't want that foul, Jim.
She's going a little out of control and you don't want to reach don't bail someone out in a bad situation.
30,000.
Keyshia Hall That's your first personal and the team's third preseason out of a dead ball situation by Atkinson down screen around the perimeter Brown left side Corey Pickett misses the rim that comes Atkinson County.
Nice pick and we have a foul That's a great screen by Thomas fouls on a precious friend that's her first personal to that pass Well hey there you go You got to have a bounce pass into the post There's too many hands up.
How are you going to take up?
Go low.
Good.
Time out.
Tiffany Thomas in the right place at the right time.
And Atkinson County with a 13 six lead with 216 to go here in the first quarter.
Atkinson County fell six of six from the field.
When you shoot like that you can't there's no way to lose this.
You got to look where they're getting their shots though They hit the one jumper by Thomas when she bang that one and then that 18 feet, you see that air pass right there is going to get you killed.
Nice.
The swing man's always in the right spot, but you always want a bounce pass into the post.
So what's Jimmy Thompson telling his warriors right now?
They just settled down.
They've had some good shots.
They just missed a couple of layups and they missed a couple of free throws, and they've been cut out of this thing.
It's 13 to 6 early in the game and, you know, late in the first quarter, obviously.
But they're in good shape if they just capitalize on some quick two footers from a down year for Atkinson Browning, in his sixth year, 107 wins and 58 losses to May.
Thompson on the other side and he is second year.
But get this school's first appearance at a championship game not bad one for two I think he's going to ask bonus the athlete contract renewed good defense by Atkinson County and they get the ball back the rebels come into this 130 wins and only two losses Thomas breaking the pressure.
Yes well they got to get some more inside help there, but they got a force here to the left.
He just kills them.
Go to the right, 15 six Atkinson County under 2 minutes to play.
First quarter turn around jumper and nice shot by Miro channel And remember she's just a freshman did a great job of squaring up her shoulders.
She's going to try to force the left back into the inside.
Thomas swings it left side.
Now back out to the top of the key.
This is Tiffany Thomas.
Know this is able to penetrate that deep.
It kind of kills that box, that one due to the fact that other people have to help.
And then that opens up other folks.
Thomas is the quarterback of this team that's down low bad pass taken away by the Warriors on the run in and out of the hands of Mariah Chandler and the rebels will take over.
So Coach Thompson's probably gonna say, look, we don't need to throw that long pass.
Let's bring the ball up, run our offense.
They had a tough time guarding Mariah Chandler in the post that last trip down.
Let's make their bigs have to work against our bigs Atkinson County with the ball Salisu Thomas They're going man to man trying to double team the ball at the top.
Also forcing her to go left, taking away my precious friend and she mixed it all up on the other end.
That's a good transition basket.
So now 15 to 10 Atkinson County with 47 seconds to go in the first quarter of play.
The single-A championship game from the Macon County head live right here on GPB from the corner three point attempt off the mark by Keyshia Hall Williams has got great long arm strength and some pounding She gets every rebound now the rebels are going to settle for the last shot of the first quarter.
And why not with a five point lead Southwest, the Christians in Amanda mann usually want to take this shot with about eight, 7 seconds to go on the clock.
So you get the last shot of the half or the quarter.
There you see your clock with 11 seconds.
Here's the jumper off the mark.
And southwest Atlanta Christian has a chance to score the last two for the first quarter.
4 seconds long shot off the mark by Brown.
And with one second remaining, Atkinson County will get a final sprint around the rush.
That just a tad where I tried to allude to you want to try to shoot that last shot with about 7 to 8 seconds to go in the quarter due to the fact if you miss it, that won't allow any break.
Coming back the other way.
11 seconds, 12 with that, if your opponent gets the rebound, they get the last shot.
They're down the stretch.
One quarter in the books from the Macon Coliseum.
Atkinson County has a 15 to 10 lead over Southwest east Atlanta.
Christian will have the second quarter for you on GPB right after this.
And I'd like to suggest to you that inspiration is not something that comes and goes.
This is a whole new look at inspiration.

The Atkinson County cheerleaders very happy so far to this point fills your piece of the game so far.
Well, like we talked about earlier, guard pressure in guard dominance of the game is going to be a key.
I think Atkinson County's guards are playing at extremely high level today and Alissa Thomas is basically dominating the game.
Her ability to break down that zone against southwest Atlanta Christians, exposing the back line, which is allowing all the short chippy little layups.
That sounds that Atkinson County's been able to capitalize on.
Tiffany Thomas swings it left side that's pushing Hall back to Thomas I can sit down with a five point lead on the ball driving baseline as Jalen Williams stops and pops in about five and shoots an ball.
Southwest Atlanta Christian on the other end Southwest electricity on a nice job coming out of that time out in a 1 to 2 zone try to get it down low Chandler didn't have a shot Good read more by Pickett Yup Brown for three Yes He's a big time player.
He's going to have a major role in this game.
She gets her feet set, she can shoot.
Atkinson Counties lead is down to two 1513 Don't jump the pass pass down low Nixon off the glass.
One thing about Atkinson County if they get it point blank range they will capitalize.
Nixon has six Atkinson County a four point lead 1713 over southwest Atlanta.
Christian This is a great test match.
Both teams are switching up.
Their defense is Atkinson County's now in a23 zone down low.
It goes Chandler off the rim with another rebound Chandler no check that that's Scott La Tanya Scott hits the jumper Nice little high low action again that zone offense that zone is going to be open in the middle if you can stretch it by starting behind the back line up the zone six and a half to play second quarter Atkinson down.
He loses the ball on the offensive end and now we have a whistle.
my goodness, you don't want that foul there.
They're not going to hurt you.
85 feet from the basket.
Frustration for Tim Watson Tanner Lock who's now checked into the game Inbounding the ball.
They run a lot of set plays for her out of out of bounds plays Atkinson It inbound now watch it coming back and get the ball Thomas drives away Nice pass nice pass underneath And that's that's Nixon if she's able to drive that deep into the zone you're going to have to help inside out.
And when you do that, you expose the baseline.
And Atkinson County's just taken what they didn't anytime down the stretch.
Nixon with all hopes points in the paint she has eight it's 1915 and a whistle down the other end That's great offense by Southwest L.A. Christian They took the ball to one side of the floor, slashed the post in the middle, thought it would like to the basket a little high low actually signed it Tonya Scott fouled underneath and she'll shoot to you've got to get in those gaps to that zone make two people play you see averaging just under ten points a game 8.8 rebounds per game.
She's got a nice stroke in the game for Southwest Atlanta Christian Latoya Jones gives them a little perimeter punch.
Nice rebound by Nixon and that come the rebels 2012 That's Williams off the rim rebound Thomas in the right position Williams again she does a superb job of getting that rebound and keeping it shin high and above and goes straight up to the defender.
Jalen Williams gives Atkinson County a 2116 lead, looks at the high screen on the top of that zone by Southwest.
The beneficiary and three point attempt is off the mark by Jones her first shot of the game back to the rebels that's Thomas trying to take it to distance and she was fouled by Briana Brown.
I got to look at that again she may have been a little low was the only reason but she was set but she may have been a little low.
You want to get that chance here?
It is right here.
You want to get that charge outside the lane has been taking a step back.
That was kind of close.
What's the Thomas on the line?
And it's 20 to 16.
Atkinson County.
Good shot of Allison.
There's her numbers on the season just coming up big in the final and what a way to close out a career as a senior That's guys taking the pressure 2316 Atkinson County pulling back in their two three zone.
Jones outside to Chandler swinging it around looking for Scott Chandler Nice pass and an extra job.
Scott's made three beautiful passes today Mariah Chandler the freshman scores again it's 2318 Atkinson County just under 5 minutes to go till halftime Great job offensive speed trying to take that right hand away.
Thomas with a wild shot off the mark then the Warriors off the break Shot off the mark Loose ball Jones down low trying to find from loose ball Here come the rebels but a helter skelter I think this Pasco favors Atkinson can whistle Thomas slows it down just a bit resets the offense gets the ball from that coach on the down try to get down low post there Madsen out of the two three down anywhere Williams goes Mariah Chandler is right there Hip pocket as Thomas drives we had a whistle All those little reach fouls drive you crazy as a coach Jim They just make you old quick and it's foul on number three they're Victoria Jones that's her first personal You got to play defense with your feet Santana lock to inbound Nice pass to Nixon but it's blocked back from the Warriors Brown off the break leads it left side blue that's gone yes No it's Turner She's got great hands You want a bounce pass into the post?
A nice job of catching that ball.
Mariah Chandler pulls the Warriors within three.
It's 2320.
I it comes down to that she had to switch to that left.
She's not as comfortable which caused the carrying ball So the Warriors get it back.
Christina Robinson's is coming in the game now for Southwest L.A. Christian is good high post flash electric Chandler on the back side of it that is Jones that's underneath Good pass that's Chandler off the mark back comes Atkinson down it all down low And Nixon's shot was blocked again But this time he's fouled on the play Nice job by Nixon You always want to take the ball into the shot blockers Chance Don't fade away fade away You create space in the defense is going to occupy any gap or space you create now as a shot blocker you want to jump.
Second, keep yourself perpendicular to the floor.
Jump second go hands straight up, get the ball out of the air as opposed to trying to get it out of the ball with Shutter.
Jenny Nixon.
Nixon makes one of two and Atkinson County leads by four.
I could see that he's doing a nice job of controlling the tempo of the game.
They push the accelerator, but they back it off and they push the accelerator again.
Southwest under Christensen, a nice job of attack in this two three zone.
Robinson with a bad pass and this one goes over the passport line.
So this goes back to Atkinson County.
Rule of thumb, you want to make sure the person you're passing the ball, you're looking and you just got those no look passes that you get sometimes gets in trouble.
That screen step, that screener back to the ball, they get open nine times out of ten.
Thomas trapped and there's going to be a foul but this isn't going to go against pressure Slim number 21.
The other fouls are starting to mount up but we are getting back to get in here into the one on one situation, the next one, and in heck, three of them in reach.
You this offense is going to get you killed.
We are in the winning back of the game for the Warriors.
Is that Tonya Scott?
I got and on the line for Atkinson Kelly 60 time it goes by the nickname tip and she's a very good player a great swing players meaning she can play inside, she can play outside.
She's always in the right spot at the right time.
Get the he rebounds, make it big time free throws.
That's basically the distance of the game.
Some missed shots and Southwest Atlantic issues they have in the in the free throws and the easy chippies that Atkinson Kelly has been able to take that shot of Mariah Chandler back in the game the freshman 2620 Atkinson County there's Chandler back out to Jones swinging around the perimeter.
Now the get try to get down low to stop good defense by Atkinson down back comes Thomas Thomas to hall down low today Lou Williams he gets around Thomas again Shon Thomas gets the rebound loose ball underneath and they say jump ball The possession arrow points to southwest Atlanta Christian.
She's not real tall, but she does a great job of getting inside rebounding position or the her opponents going to be always on her back.
Coming up on 2 minutes to go.
First half the Knicks analysis heated up on Scott Jones for three just off the mark, Thomas off the break now.
The rebound ball in the corner.
Got to get out of there and it goes off for leg and out of bounds.
If you dribble to the corner, what's going to happen?
You got the baseline and the sideline will become a defender.
Now, one defender now becomes three or two, defenders now become four, and you just hem yourself in, keep the ball in the middle of the floor and drive into those gaps.
Creates more Scott Scoring opportunities for your offense.
Warriors down by six they have the ball.
Brown Trying to set it up kind of robbing the situation Yeah between runs and setting that screen.
Good defense underneath.
All right that's his daily Warriors having trouble getting that ball down low.
well, the angle wasn't a good pass.
It's going to be awful tough to feed the post against the zone from the top of the key.
You got to get lane line, foul line extended and below to make that pass.
Jenna Nixon trying to find Taylor Williams that was intercepted and back come the warriors coach McGowan's probably going to have a kid at halftime that goes for the turnovers with this shot down low this is Scott in and out loose ball put up by Channing the miss and now stock gets to a rebound It one of our main keys of the game If you allow a team to get three or four cracks at it, you're going to be in trouble.
And I know the staff out here, Scott was looking a little bit as he was going back to throw some defense.
But keep a close eye on here.
Let's start with the ball right now off the break for Chandler.
Chandler with the left hand shot off the ball and he goes off after some downward Christian who rushed that possession a little bit, made a great job of trapping on the sideline and down.
But then they came down offensively had them didn't really have the numbers and to took a run on one hand or ergo they lost the ball they said the ball went off the Warriors So Atkinson County gets it back if Coach McGowan talks to the last shot here, Jim, the 35 seconds, absolutely extended their defensive pressure.
Southwest L.A. Christmas trying to find Nixon underneath in traffic.
Good defense by the Warriors.
You got to value that ball, especially in the championship game.
You got to grab it, chin it, turn and face and make a strong pass.
So now the Warriors, a play for the last shot with 19 seconds and counting Atkinson down is still in there.
Two, three turnovers, a big story in the first half Atkinson County with 12 turnovers three point goal way off the mark by Chandler 2 seconds one watch from half court by Thomas off the ball and that's it.
So Atkinson County despite having 12 turnovers Phil still has the lead by four 2622 over southwest Atlanta Christian.
Well southwest early Christians should feel pretty happy about being only four down with all those turnovers.
All right.
Let's go down the floor to Scott Kozlowski.
Scott, I'm here with Atkinson and County coach McGowan.
You're up by four at halftime.
What are you going to tell your girls about what?
We got too many turnovers and they're really unforced turnovers.
It's things that we're just nerves, you know, kind of shaky a little bit with the ball.
I thought we did a decent job on the boards, but we got to do a better job there too.
And knocking down those open shots when we get them.
All right.
Best of luck in the second half.
Jim, back to you.
I thank you, Scott.

Welcome back to the Macon Coliseum.
Atkinson County has the lead at halftime, 26 to 22 over southwest Atlanta.
Christian And what a game it's been so far, Phil Hansen, between these two teams.
Well, basically, it's pretty close to script that the guard play has dominated the game.
All right, let's go courtside and Scott Koslowski.
Scott.
Thanks, Jim.
I'm here with a couple of special guests.
I've got the principal of Southwest at Atlanta.
Christian, this is Geraldine Thompson.
And on my left here is the athletic director at Atkinson County, K Relic Hand.
And for both of you, it's got to be very exciting.
First of all, Geraldine, I this is old hat for you.
You've been here the last couple of years with your boys team.
How exciting is it to be back this year with both of your teams?
Very excited because we know we're making history and this is something that we have looked forward to for quite some time.
We really believe this is a blessing for us.
What does it mean to you to have both of your teams, both the boys and the girls involved in this?
Well, it's an indication that hard work and faith pays off and both teams have done both.
Thank you very much.
Now, let's go over here to K. K. It's been a while.
The last time you were here was in 83 and 84.
You were in the finals.
You haven't won it since 55.
What does it mean to be here this year?
I tell you what, it's been very exciting.
And these girls have taken us on a fairytale ride up here, and we've beat some real good ball clubs and we're proud to be here and we really like to win it this year.
Do it.
Do you get it that former players coming in, coming to games like this you haven't seen the long time and man, all lady rambles up there and all rambles are back here.
They're proud to be here.
Our boys team on in 95.
Well I see a good group of our alumni Cindy and but our if this team can win this ball game tonight, they will be representing every girl that has ever played basketball at Akerson County.
We had a lot of tradition in Jackson County, but we haven't been able to win this big one.
We really need to win this one.
Well, look, let me ask Geraldine over here.
Tell me what's going academically at your school at Southwest Atlanta, Christian, what are the highlights?
Well, we are a college prep school and all of the students who are on this team and on the boys team are already scholar athletes.
All of them have had offers to college who are seniors.
And we have at least a 98% participation on the college level.
Once a student has graduated from Toccoa.
Well, that makes a trip to the state championship that much more impressive if every player is a scholar athlete.
definitely they are.
They work very hard.
They must keep their grades up in order to participate in the athletic program.
It's not a fluff.
Thank you very much, both of you.
Tim, let's go back to you.
All right.
Thanks, Scott.
Phil Hansen, a great first half.
It was it was up and down, a little chaotic at the end, but has to do with solely to the pressure.
But both the stars have come out tonight.
Williams for Atkinson County and Mariah Chandler for Southwest Atlanta Christian have come up big for their teams.
But I really like the play of Alissa Williams.
Here's your first half highlights.
Chandler off the glass super hero going it up Great job takes it right to the defense And then of course, down the other end it's Alissa Thomas there's Chandler again down low.
She's a scorer.
She's going to be a big time player.
Now, this kid is who I really love.
She's done a great job of totally changing the whole complexity of the game.
Alissa Thomas has done a super, super job.
There's a deep on field.
She's playing the whole 94 feet.
She's totally dictating the tempo of the game.
And then plus she's been able to get Williams involved on the offensive end and there's her halftime numbers and Atkinson County shooting 50% from the field.
Of course, they started off six for six free throws.
Look good on both sides.
And Atkinson County again like we mentioned, 12 turnovers but yet have the lead but with 12 turnovers and you're up four, that's pretty big time.
But what I really like there is the five or six free throws and there's ten extra points and then three of six there's six points right there.
So there's you're basically your ballgame there, four point differential.
So you have to look at that.
And when any team is shooting, 50% from the field are going to be awfully tough to beat as Atkinson County is here tonight and the Rebels lead the Warriors 2622.
We'll take a break and have the second half for you right after this.
Even after 37 years, it's still fresh to a crossroads.
my cream rocks for Supergroup is back.

It's half time Makinson County leads southwest Atlanta Christian 2622.
Let's go courtside to Scott Kozlowski.
SCOTT Thank you, Jim.
You're here with Coach Thompson.
Coach, you're down by four at halftime.
Not a big margin.
Would you tell your girls at halftime what kind of adjustments are you going to make?
I think we need to slow down a little bit on offense.
I think we're rushing on offense.
I think we need to get up on the boards a little more.
And you know, this is a good team that, you know, they're executing, they're putting the ball.
We got to stop penetration as well.
That's the main thing.
I think we're doing a good job on 25, but we need to stop 2121 for penetrating and just slow down a little bit and execute.
It's been a good game.
Good luck in the second half.
Thank.
Thank you, Scott.
Phil Germain has made a lot of changes as the season has gone on.
They started off with the with that bumpy road in the beginning, playing some big teams from four and five.
They lost some games there, then made adjustments throughout the year and and did some good things.
And I see the same thing happening here in the second half, don't you?
Definitely.
Championships are built in December.
They're not won in December.
So you may take your licks early, but that's going to set up where you want to be in March.
I can see, I would imagine Coach Thompson said some good things to his team at halftime.
What do you think some of the key points were?
Well, big thing, he's got to slow them down.
He's got to run their half court offense and run it and execute it instead of just getting the very first quick thing you get, pull it back out and get the ball into Mariah.
Chandler's your big horse and let her go to work.
2622 here at halftime.
As we start the third quarter of play of the single-A championship game, there you see Alyssa Thomas, eight points on the day, one rebound and two assists as she looks to close out her career with a possible championship.
She's been outstanding and something that may be overlooked.
And what great job she's doing on Precious Friend on the defensive end of the floor.
She's basically held her in check in there and third quarter is underway as the rebels try to get down to Jenny Nixon in the early going.
You've got to have a bounce pass into that post.
You throw that air pass from above the foul line.
The defense now has a better angle at the pass.
It's a walks move the feet despite throwing three point shot off the mark by Thomas I really love from the war and she's so strong with the ball Briana Brown to boy pick it yes nice shot here this allows them not only it sets their rhythm, it allows them to get their defense set up for the press.
2624 If you just joined us, Atkinson County in the red uniforms going from left to right in the, of course, southwest Atlanta Christian Warriors in the white uniforms going from right to left on your TV screen.
Great job.
Press break and take it to one side.
Go middle and skip in opposite diagonal Atkinson County with the ball and the lead 2624 coming up on 7 minutes to go third quarter down low and off the glass is Gayla Williams She's automatically she can square up on the block she's going to score good full court pressure by Atkinson County and there's a whistle in the back where you don't want that foul there again you're 85 feet from the basket.
They had her in bad shape and it could have been just a knickknack foul but you don't want to reach there.
You had a pretty hand up.
Once again, they're going to jump into that one, two, one, one, press pass.
Look to trap that immediate first pass.
You got to get there, Thomas.
Briana Brown, now a two on one.
She keeps it and misses the layup.
Bounce pass equals a layup there.
She should have dished it off.
That is wide open.
That's Alyssa Thomas.
She's guarded by precious friend South Carolina Christians and a way to go matching up out of it.
Rebels taking their time, setting up the offense, looking for the good shot up five for good screen action and a guard cut and then a baseline screen.
Same thing.
Here comes the guard that series.
Now watch the baseline for the outside post.
It is as Nixon and Scott up with the take away and back from southwest Atlanta Christian Briana Brown very good offense there's a bounce pass would be is what she needs and Alyssa Thomas can handle it and I think some county will take over from the watch that bind you hand dead ball situation look for southwestern at Christian to go to a man to man press with a floater in the back good defensive play by precious friend.
She's all over the court.
She's got great long arms, and being long means you don't have to close out as far because you've got to distance with your arms.
There's Thomas looking for a layup on the other end.
Yes, Great play by Alyssa Thomas.
And I really like this.
She did not back down.
She took it right to Mariah Chandler's chest.
And so then you get the foul.
Mariah's got to get her hands up and back, break, get and go off the inbound jump stop layup.
Nice job.
Kept her head up shoulder slam and the Fowler's on Mariah Chandler.
The free throw is off the Mark Chandler with the rebound and back on the Warriors they trail by 638 to 24 just under 6 minutes to go in the third quarter.
But for the high post splash that we saw in the first half.
So there again, Jim, that's going to be a bounce pass if y'all want to throw an air pass to the post when they're running vertically down the floor so they can run under that like Deion Sanders.
But that's a good description that comes at that same county.
Baylor wins and some trouble.
Jerry Nixon with a shot off the Mark Kirk McGowan.
Once that starts a little quick, you were in good shape.
Now the clock has got to be your friend here.
Brown right side and Oscar Marcus friend and the follow up by Chandler that's a four point play that the two you didn't get down on the offensive end with the quick shot now they come down with the opportunity to score so the leads down to four for the rebels.
Coach Thompson's doing a great job adjusting.
Now he's got Alyssa Thomas play man to man.
Thomas loses control, picks it up again, like all over the place.
What balance?
He goes out and hauls Paul to the travel.
See a little pressure there by precious friend Alyssa Thomas caused her to get rid of it quick.
And then Hall had the turnover.
5 minutes to go.
Third quarter for that middle of that zone is wide open for Southwest and A, they just penetrate that gap three point attempt by Fran just off the mark.
Back from the rebels Thomas through traffic she gets every rebound he Thomas does a superb job on the boards good defense by Corey take it to slow her down and now the rebels reset the offense their match in that 1 to 2 zone again head coach Paul McGowan calls a play pass intended for Williams and taken away by Mariah Campbell on the other end.
And we have a foul as it was a Thomas as a pass his friend misses the back shot.
When you go to block that shot, you've got to take your inside hand.
The one closest to the middle of the floor and go over the offensive man's outside shoulder.
Your body will never touch the ball.
Good.
Kick ahead.
See if she's she took the wrong hand.
If you took the inside hand and went over the outside shoulder, she'd never touch you in the game for Atchison County, Santana Locke.
If she gets her feet set, she's a very good standing.
Three point shooter.
That's Waukesha Hall.
Takes a seat.
She hit a couple huge threes against Jefferson in the center.
Brown hits the free throw 3228.
Atkinson counters This is where you need that mental discipline.
Let me talk about it.
Keep your poise and run your offense.
Double the ball.
Someone's got to flash to the ball.
Thomas throwing up his dribbling skills but ends up traveling under pressure.
You got to do the math.
See what their selfless thing that Kristen is doing is.
They're doubling the ball and rotating everybody up, leading the man furthest from the ball open.
You've got to send a cutter to the ball and then exploit the defense in the backside.
Padgett scores in the corner.
We got a ball game run that it up tied at 30 and we have a timeout Good timeout and a half That was a good timeout.
Coach McGowan, settle his team down, get everybody refocused.
Now we have to attack that double team on the perimeter when they attack Alyssa Thomas.
Now, Phil, what a great what a great game so far, though.
I'll tell you two as these both teams end to end.
Exactly.
And what we really like here is the ebb and flow of the game.
Both teams are going head to head at each other and the game is in a frenetic pace.
Now look for Atkinson County to try to pull out and get more spacing.
So Alyssa Thomas just hit the dribble into so many traps.
They think the fans are into this one.
this is a great atmosphere.
Always love coming down here.
The crowds are great.
The semis were fantastic place at about three quarters.
The building was full and this is what high school basketball is all about.
I mean, making in March, I mean, there's a lot of magic to it.
I love it.
The weather's good and it's just a fun place to be.
So we're tied at 30.
It's the first time we've been tied since the game was tied at six six in the early portions of the first quarter in a1211 press.
See the Warriors Lady Warriors on a60 run.
You don't want to throw that long high vertical pass.
You want to take the ball to one side, the floor flash, middle and skip opposite line.
Here's Williams on the baseline.
Good pass, Good pass to Nixon.
That's a great pass and that's what you have to do.
And when your other team is making a run, you've got to step up digging heels in and make a score.
Have some courage.
And Brianna Brown as a swing it around the perimeter looking for a good shot.
That's Scott Pickett in the corner, moving the ball around pretty good.
That's Briana Brown.
If you make two or three passes in any offense and get that defense, especially a zone to shift and flex, you'll be able to get an open shot.
Rebels trying to get it down it and we have a whistle toss best and Christian has done a good job of taking the tempo of this game over.
Even though Atkinson County scored the last time down, it was the shot that Southwest led to Christian wanted to give up looks the lock here jam again when he makes his inbound pass.
They like to swing her to the backside and get her a quick shot.
On the inbound is Williams download trying to get a shot off Gordon off the rim as Scott a couple dribble double dribble and gets away with it now that's zone look a wide open in the middle of that zone is they're flashing a cutter high there and they can try to get the same thing with his effort penetration take it to Scott that's to take it take it from 20 yes he started them off in the second half, Jim.
And he's picked right up here.
She's been the spark plug in the third quarter.
And that gives Southwest Atlanta Christian the lead.
3432.
Now, look, Middle good defense by the Warriors again jam against any pressure or press.
You got three things you want to look up.
Don't dribble with your head down, look middle and then look to skip the opposite diagonal.
Those coaches very much involved in this one.
The so it's like you play the final game because this is what it's all about.
I mean the pressure, the intensity, the test match of the game, trend of reach power in the game for the Warriors.
Latoya Jones for a screening roll back.
This is my screen of the ball.
There's Thomas that's Tiffany Thomas with the ball the Southwest.
No officials just said that Alyssa Thomas is not going to get the ball.
Their place be playing her man to man.
That's how much southwest Atlanta Christian keeping that ball away from Baylor.
Collins for most of the game that and Jones is going to whistle for a job defensively and trying and a timeout is called so yeah go Williams I mean down low and trying to get some shots but Southwest a lot of personnel in have well every time she's turned around she's going against the Tanya Scott Emery it's Mariah Taylor every time down the floor and every time she turns around instead of being a56 killer, she's turned around.
There's almost a six foot four or five elevens.
And that alters your shot.
Mariah's got a super job of locking her up, trying to keep her shoulders squared.
But where it's getting to that is that southwest Atlanta Christmas did an outstanding job of keeping Alyssa Thomas away from the ball here in the third quarter.
And southwest Atlanta Christian, the last time they had the league was 6 to 4.
So it'll be interesting to see as as time moves on here how Atkinson County handles being down.
We're on the flip side of that coin is it takes a lot of energy to get the lead in.
Once you get the lead ten two to run, that's outstanding.
But that was done solely on tickets performance offensively and the defense.
Now the Warriors take their time trying to find that good shot.
So they're running their offense now.
They're going into going out.
And if you take the defense inside, outside and opposite, you're going to get the shot you want.
Scott fouled by Nixon.
And so Scott will go to the line to shoot to third.
That's Nixon second personnel.
Both these teams do a great job of scoring off their defense.
good touch by Scott.
She got a nice stroke.
It's a three foot stroke.
And you see the sophomores numbers six points, three rebounds.
Good rebound underneath by Brown.
That's not the shot you want.
You got the rebound, pull it back out, run your offense and exploit them again Now down low Williams Let's see again simple penetration fouls that open look for Williams Nice job Alyssa Thomas 3530 for southwest Atlanta Christian almost intercepted by Thomas here's Brown in traffic Most teams like to apply pressure and press don't like to be pressed Brown setting up the offense Scott on the cut she's looking for Scott she's got her turnaround jumper by Scott is off the mark and the rebound by lock Here comes Thomas looking down low Gayla Williams again great body control that's a great body control Caught it and never brought the ball down jam that's outstanding Kayla Williams puts Atkinson County back in the lead 3635 25 seconds to go.
Good defense by the rebels Thomas Underneath this foul ball Brown defensive pressure creates offense and when you're able to score that allows you to set your defense your press up in the air, go another turnover pace starting to pick up as we get late in the game.
If Atkinson County can get the game in more of a frenetic pace in the halfcourt set, I think it benefits them.
Mr. Thomas Ten points, one rebound, four assists for the senior.
She's been huge.
She's been the factor that tough as Atlanta Christian has been hard time defending.
They've done a good job on Williams but every time Thomas breaks you down, it's like you got to pick your poison.
You're going to give her a layup.
Or if you help, then you have Williams shoot a layup.
Kishore back in the game for the rebound.
Great rebound underneath Nixon Super job.
Nixon's been dangerous in the paint the entire game so now you think they got it all going nutty here in the halfcourt set block Good block blocked by Nixon the ball good defense by Jenny Nixon sees the last 30 seconds has dominated the game got that big rebound off the free throw came down blocked the shot stopped the shot and that's it for the third quarter.
Back to a four point lead.
Jim Atkinson down.
He leads it 3935 over southwest Atlanta.
Christian will take a timeout fourth quarter coming up next on GPB.
I wish I could fly into the sky and I'd like to suggest to you that inspiration is something that comes and goes.

Coming soon to Georgia Public Broadcasting, I send you the love my sends as I can.
I was I Annie song when suddenly I was hypersensitive to how beautiful everything was.
My lack of walk in the rain watched John Denver, a song's best friend as a Tuesday at 730 on Georgia Public Broadcasting, the This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station that here at the Macon Coliseum the girls single-A final Atkinson County leads at 3935 and that's because they are on a seven over in the last minute, 26.
The lady rebels are looking good, so that's solely due to their defense.
They've been able to create a few steals and then take those steals and turn those turnovers into points.
On the offensive end, Nixon has done a great job stepping up in the last minute to gain Braxton County Warriors get the ball to start the fourth quarter, but in a seesaw battle look for Southwest Atlantic Christian to go into Mariah Chandler here for one of those turnaround jumpers in the post likes to spin into the lanes.
There she is.
There's Chandler off the glass and before the shot traveling ball, she wants to go to the last legs and she's a righty.
So she's more dominant with that.
Look at that leg in the front court today.
Lou Williams back out to Thomas to regroup Southwest beneficial in a man to man and I get some help Nice drive by Thomas because he misses the layup that come the warriors victorious Jones resets up the up and sets up the offense is his friend and that's accounting a 83 still Jones for three try to use the glass off the mark and from the rebels It's a little quick on the shot if they stay in a man to man southwest win the Christian that is they're going to have to get some more help from the off side.
Fred did a nice job there of trying to force that three points to drive off the shot by tip off the mark by Tiffany here's Thomas for three off off the mark and it goes out of bounds.
Right Atkinson County.
I wouldn't take the ball out of Alissa Thomas's hands offensively just let her quarterback and run the field.
She gives it up, give it back to her, even from a cut or a pop back out using an eye cut, a deep cut or an L type to get the ball.
And I only Thompson takes the bench for Southwest Atlanta.
Kristen Corey take it back in the game take it just misses that pass Here's Thomas on the break Looks for a layup yes a great job I at see Tony making like Taylor had to bring the ball up the floor instead of one of the guards so it's timeout Atkinson County by six now 4135 as Thomas the layup and so Atkinson County is on a roll now and nine Nothing wrong with this one see this is what you got when I actually had to bring the ball up that's not your guard and that's really that hurt ball boy the guards have got to come back.
Bring that ball up.
Brianna Brown's a good one to bring it up, but now she has to give it up to someone in transition moving.
And that's not putting them in a cost effective.
That's efficient position.
Jermaine Thompson, what's he's telling his team now for Southwest Atlanta Christian.
And as we look we're looking at Gibson County bench but there's a Jermaine's team right there.
What's he tell him?
Settle down, run our press offense.
Look, they're going to trap the first initial pass.
So what you have to look at is one look at who is inbounding the ball and see if that is open.
You've got to look middle.
If middle is an open and pass back is if pass back is taken, the middle is open.
Brian here's your turnovers and points.
You you got 18 turnovers and in 15 points off it and that's basically the ballgame right there.
If you're able to score off your opponent's mistakes, that's how you win championships.
All right.
The Warriors two inbound as they try to break the full court pressure lock, gets into the fourth front court to play by Mariah and it's Jones and they swing it around the perimeter.
Now, as she likes to post on that left block, she can spin Scott in the corner, trying to get down low to Chandler, and it's picked off and back comes Thomas.
It's to be a bounce pass.
Here she comes.
She's been everywhere in my lab.
Well, you're safe from going over the table there, but just under 6 minutes to go in the final quarter of a single championship.
No, That's why you coach having young kids like that play that hard for Scott.
Can't break free for a shot there in the corner lock intercepted by Thomas.
And she steps on the line and the warriors will take the ball Tiffany Thomas is an outstanding defensive player has a great feel for the game Breanna Brown back in for southwest Atlanta Christian to replace Latoya Jones and joining us is Pinkett they'll give southwest Atlanta Christian a little more help on the perimeter, bringing that ball up against the press.
Brown looks low.
Here's the shot from three point land and it's off by press.
His friend and a loose ball underneath possession out of points to Atkinson Patty you never want to bring that ball down Jimmy get that rebound keep the chin high and above and go straight back.
You bring it down.
That's where all the little people play.
And a timeout called with five and a half minutes to play.
I'll tell you what this championship weekend on GPB incredible With all the games that we're bringing the folks back home it was wonderful.
Last night.
I had a blast watching the games.
Then you got games all day today.
It's just announced adding venue both places and in five and a half to go on the final quarter.
Coming up, it's the boys single-A championship, Southwest Atlanta, Christian and Whitfield Academy.
That's coming up right after this 1 minutes The girls Double-A gassy and whistling at 3:00.
And then at 445, the Boys championship, Thomasville and Dublin.
On the list continues, Girls triple-A at 7:00 tonight, Avondale and Hephzibah.
And then at 845, it's the boys triple-A game coming up here on GPB.
So big schedule of games coming up.
If you love basketball, this is the place to be.
Five second call.
Their turnover Southwest L.A. Christian to a man to man press Good splash by Scott Nice pass by friend And that's the Warriors first basket in over 4 minutes It's 4137 dribbles Williams tried a banana cut meaning coming to the ball and rolling away from the ball.
That ball has got to be thrown to the outside hand of the defense of the offensive end.
Here's Thomas, guarded by Brown breaks the pressure.
There's Thomas on the drive.
Yes they did the penetration filled southwest fishing all day.
That's the kind list that Thomas scores the easy help Now the steal by Tiffany Thomas.
Great job taken away the middle pass away.
They're doing a wonderful job Coach McGowan is bracketing county of adjusting his trap.
One minute he's taking the pass back away.
Next minute he's taking the middle away.
Next minute he's taking the sideline pass away to now, right there they had middle Chandler, the freshman as the Warriors look to regroup he zone again Brown drives baseline good hands by Williams up and back Brown from the corner on the rim What a rebound underneath by paint it he saved the mask take half good bounce pass Chandler with the ball back down the rebels go have numbers need to pull it out there again you didn't have numbers pull that ball back out use the sideline as your friend because you know who standing over there by you.
It's your coach or the fans then.
But you got to be cognizant of the fact anybody you pass in the open court hasn't gone out and got a pop court.
I mean, they're going to be coming in from behind you 415 to go in the final quarter, give and go.
There's Thomas in traffic taken away by Chandler and an action Chandler fouled as he looks to go for the lay up and hit hard under the basket.
It's a great job on the right bringing that ball up 94 feet She got in line there and off to the races he goes and this is a freshman six foot girl bringing the ball straight up strong and getting the foul.
Excellent job that you but I can see account he did a great job in championship play number one rule No layups no layups.
Do not let the offensive player get their hands above their shoulders.
So now they that earned the points, the free throw line, Mariah Chandler, eight points, four rebounds and just a freshman.
I say nine times out of ten, she's going to make an open layup there.
Now, you put it on the free throw line and that percentage based misses both free throws and a backcourt foul on precious friend.
Here again, John, you've got to be innocent of the fact that anybody you pass as a left in the gym, they're behind you.
You can't just relax and get laser at that dribble.
You got to use your body with the ball.
You in the main principle dribbles, get the ball back on the inbounds.
This is Thomas.
In the back court is Tiffany Thomas and Alyssa whistle Thomas that's Tiffany with the ball you have strong passes make diagonal take it away Here's Brown down the other end off the backboard never fouled Brown was hit the score as she went up on the on the layup and she was hit by a number ten Tiffany Thomas that's a little late ladies go back the other way now again you guys see Greenside move over her outside shoulder and they didn't call the play the foul.
Then she fell hard in the court, right, Coach Atkinson does a great job of rebounding from the defensive position at the free throw line.
Breanna Brown now with ten points.
As you saw her numbers on the day and of course, Brianna, just a sophomore for southwest Atlanta Christian to be back next year.
Definitely great rebound Jackson Brown hits one of two he might have a lane violation so Brown will get one more wait for that ball to hit the rim with brown cuts the lead to four.
Keep your eye on that play down the stretch field goal percentage the northwest Atlanta Christian definitely improved over in the second half here Brown has some layups there and a steal and friend is foul you never want to jump to pass and that's what caused the turnover.
And to the one Mariah Chandler Chandler's friend Chandler with a great pass on the coast isn't going to block that shot more than likely she's just got to get her hands up and back and make Mariah Chandler at the score over the top it so a four point game, three and a half to go and you know again conversation on both benches here.
Well if you're southwest Atlanta Christian, you're going to say, look, we got to get the ball in the Mariah in the half court set.
Flip it.
If you're Atkinson County, keep the ball in Alyssa Thomas's hands.
Be patient against that pressure.
Keep an odd front against an even front and even front against the nod and look middle and skip opposite.
Here's Tiffany Thomas and what she's been able to do for the rebels today.
I love her.
She's a great swing player, meaning she can play the inside.
Outside gets loose balls, rebounds.
She's always in the right place at the right time.
Good player and of course, some good shooting on the other end by Corey Pickett of Southwest, Atlanta, Christian and I tell you why.
It's been a great game so far.
The single-A championship, Atkinson County and Southwest Atlanta Christian there's Tiffany Thomas 7.2 rebounds on the day for the senior as she looks to try to close this one out with a championship.
She's heated up here as of late.
I mean, she's been more involved.
She's had her hands on the ball.
I'm not saying she has to score every time or or shoot it every time, but she's got to touch it every time down the floor for South Pasadena, Christian, she draws too much defensive activity for her not to have the ball at all after that championship trophy from the seal.
Here is the free throw.
It's good.
And Chandler hits some big throws to help the three 4349 here and looks like Chandler going to push too little late and she came up there you got to cut that thing off and if you're coming up you've got to stop the ball in the back guy now closes the gap on that trap.
Yep.
Closes the window too hard for the seven.
There's your free throws.
Atkinson County looking good.
Six of nine Southwest.
A lot of Christian, on the other hand.
Nine of 16 so far.
Well, that's your ballgame.
You make free throws.
You're right.
In this state, Thomas misses the front end of a one on one.
And now comes Brown and can score down.
He's going up to three zone time, starting to become a factor.
Good steal by Williams There's Thomas on the other end guarded tightly by Brown here Williams fighting for it underneath with Brown They want to win this Alysa Thomas he's got to take that ball with a crossover dribble She had to open it up and layup but going straight to right now Brandon a great job of sealing off the angle, make it or make a tough shot.
It was able to pull it back out or take a left handed layup.
These teams want a win.
Yes brackets.
Anthony simply does not want the clock to stop.
Now this allows southwest Atlanta Christian to score with the clock moving.
Brianna Brown on the line for southwest Atlanta.
Christian, what a way.
It's free.
Throw it again.
If she makes this free throw, it allows Southwest Bennett Christian to jump into their press, whether it's a man to man.
A one, two, one, two, one, one.
Wow.
Now with 13 points on the day.
But more importantly, southwest Atlanta Christian is only down by one.
They're going to one time trap right on the halfway line.
The crowd now starting to get into it, 245 to go in the final quarter.
Tyler has to continue just running their offense double screen high ball on the right side looking down low has nobody Thomas no panic Southwest is a man to man full out make the trap Thomas drives the lane in traffic Scott comes up with the with the ball.
Scott brings it down in the front court for southwest Atlanta Christian they take over and have a chance to take the lead take it from the corner.
Off them on that comes Atkinson.
There's Tiffany Thomas again with the ball This is Thomas here comes the trap.
2 minutes to go in the final quarter of the single championship Southwest Atlanta pushing through it.
A nice job of trapping in the ball park.
See you whistle down low.
This one's going against the rebels.
Well, they got a push by Williams, As you can see, everybody here at the Macon Coliseum on their feet rooting for their teams.
That team win situation, they break the pressure and underneath it Scott great bounce pass into the post I'm real Southwest Atlanta Christian back in the lead 4443 with 140 to go Thomas good time out you never want to jump the pass and basically don't pick your ball pick up the ball later with the half court line in what's been a seesaw game.
I'll tell you what, the crowd's into it.
The players are into it.
Phil Well, these teams are here for a reason.
One, they're very well coached.
Both teams have been able to adjust to each others chess match, whatever they're going to do.
Now, Coach McGowan did an outstanding job, a fun time out there.
So there wasn't a turnover and she's hoping those prayers will be answered.
Look at that.
The lady Warriors again, a70 run now.
So it's funny back and forth.
I mean, first it was Atkinson County on the 701 now the Southwest Atlanta Christian Warriors on a70 run in this seesaw battle 4443 with 134 to go.
And I'll tell you what they're allowed them to make a call.
I see the headsets on my ears of the heart.
The defense is totally controlling the game due to the perimeter play of the guards.
Southwest Atlanta Christian, their man to man press is going to trap whenever the ball is turn.
So when the ball is turned from use, they're going to go get it and rotate everybody up.
And even the man furthest from the ball open, Atkinson County, has got to come to the ball.
All right, here we go with 134 left.
This is Travis.
They're going to spread him out and have a go.
One on five.
She drives the lane, the shot.
Good.
She stops.
Great call.
And for the time out.
Listen, Thomas gives Offensive County a 4544 lead now 115 to play clock continues to run.
he's got to front my channel I've got to find her Do not let her get the ball Brown for three yes huge Jim Briana Brown hits from downtown and it's 4745 one possession ballgame intercepted by Scott.
Here come the Warriors.
They got a friend and it's 4145 Southwest Atlanta Christian wanted to advance war again and he jumped in the air to pass the ball.
You're not Peter Pan.
You're not going to play for that.
You're going to give up any stability you have on the pass, because if the defense rotates, you can't adjust.
I believe the prayers were answered for that young lady.
The team has a lot of time.
Great pass, good look, she said.
We talked about that earlier.
If she can set her feet, she can shoot it today.
Look, Jimmy got 51 seconds.
You don't have to come down and shoot three come down, work your offense.
Look for that spread offense by South by Atkinson County and look for Thomas to take that ball inside, try to get a quick two in, look to steal the ball and moving.
If you can't steal it immediately then you go for the quick foul going for the ball.
Then because if you come down, if you jack it up three pointers and you miss your play in Behind the Power three Southwest Atlanta Christian has only hit two of 12 three pointers.
But what a big one by Breanna.
That was a monster.
All right, here we go.
Under 50 seconds as Atkinson County tries to get answered here down by four with 44 seconds to go.
Thomas drives the way Thomas all the way misses the led underneath and they say it's going to be ready ball and the good take out again you go to the three here she is they get a quick to 36 seconds to go in the single-A championship Nixon Right side.
Thomas They're going to get a set up pretty quickly on the corner.
They've got to get going.
It looks for Nixon loose ball and the possession all points to the Warriors all their offense Possession probably wasn't what Coach McGowan wanted.
They got to get that ball inside to Williams and get the pick too, because Gordon likely samples it.
Any Christian is not going to fall, so they're going to give you that quick two to get the ball back.
Have a good shot of Carl McGowan there.
Tyson Dunn sweating it Got to get this rebound Curry fake it at the line with 26 seconds It's free throw She's giving up a big time player here in the second half.
The success of the person really got him going early in the third quarter.
Just kept it up in the four Warriors by five.
Take it with nine points, Warriors by six against him.
You don't need a quick three because if you miss it, then you have to fall.
Now, Southwest Atlanta Christian come down with no pressure and then shoot two free throws.
However, if you score the quick go for the steal, go get the steal.
They fouled.
Now they have to score pressure.
You know, you see these shots have all these t shirts everybody's wearing in the stands.
It says Best of friends here.
I mean, it's great to see both schools supporting their teams the way they tackling what you have there is precious friend and many friends both play for southwest Atlanta, Christian and the family affair.
There you see southwest Atlanta fans there been incredible single-A championship, a seesaw battle between southwest Atlanta Christian and Atkinson County single-A boys championship.
Coming up next on.
So look forward to that as this is game one of six today on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Southwest Atlantic Christian's one, 211 zone, with its length and size, has given Atkinson kind of some trouble here.
20 seconds to go, Thomas looking for an open man call from the corner off Mark Hanley with a big rebound and found out he Now you're playing behind the power three and Southwest Atlanta Christian fans are pretty happy now for their warriors, but both these teams are just outstanding.
They're very, very well-coached.
Mariah Chandler on the line, the freshman bachelors.
Three more years.
I think we're going to see her next year to where they got to have the three.
Here come the rebels under 10 seconds stolen.
what a play by France.
Who goes the distance.
Yes, that's going to do it.
5345 South it little Christian home is the single world championship.
What a comeback for the Warriors Warriors Southwest Atlanta Christian Lady Warriors.
The 2006 class AA champions and yes, they are the champions.
Phil But you love that.
You hate to see anybody lose.
And there's really now a loser here.
Southwest Atlanta Christian rightfully.
They won the tournament, did a superb job.
But Atkinson he did an outstanding job to get here and just competed in battle the whole week through.
They have nothing to be ashamed of.
They played extremely well.
Great ball game that the crowd on their feet saluting the champions the but I tell you what happens the county fans are there for their rebels as well what a what a great game 5345.
