The runway is coming and it's a slam to the left from three.
Watch this guy go five cracks in it and gets it.
Hello and welcome to the Bacon Coliseum.
What's your project alongside Bob Howard?
We're going to kick things off the way it should be with the class AA finals.
We've got the Wesleyan Wolves going up against the Southwest Atlantic Christian Warriors.
It's a great day.
We're going to see it, Jan, as our squad can win their fifth straight state championship.
Bob Helton, want to tell us a little bit of how the way that the Wesleyan Wolves got here to the May consider plex.
Well, for the fourth time in this long run, they've had they got beat in the regional so they came in as a number two seed but their first game was against they had they won 83 to 26, followed by a rout of Bremen, 71 to 34, then Darlington 95 to 41.
And finally, on Wednesday night at Closer Game, it gets Taylor County, where they won 55 to 40.
That's Janice Azar right there.
She's got four straight state titles, three in classification single-A.
And she has led the Wesleyan Wolves two eight since 2002.
She is seeking number nine.
Now, on the other side, Southwest Atlantic Christian Academy, the Warriors.
Not many people can say they've won a class AA title going up against Janice.
Ah.
How did they get to make it?
Well, a lot of defense.
They've held 20 teams under 40 points, you see, against Washington Wilks.
They won 63 to 28, then over Gordon Lee 72 to 59 a game.
We'll talk a lot more about the Saint Francis.
The only team to beat both of these teams this year, but they took them down.
Sestak added 53 to 48 and then they beat Charlton here on Wednesday night, 68 to 39.
And Jackie Cowan, of course, won that 2006 class, a state championship.
There she is talking to her players right now.
Janice are of Wesleyan has gone on record calling this her best squad ever since she's been at the Wesleyan Wolves program.
And it all starts with one of her seniors, Holly Wilkins, number 32.
The senior Holly Wilkins, is averaging about 15 points a contest.
She had ten the other day in the semifinal victory, 30 points, including four three pointers in that second half.
And a feature player for second is Alex Carter.
She was.
And that right there you see a shot of Holly Wilkins holding it over her head.
Again, She had ten points and she is also a double double machine.
She can rack up the rebounds as well.
You see her right there from her four position and four sack of the player that we're picking to look out for is Alexis Carter.
And she came back after a serious injury, an ACL injury.
She came back during the playoffs, scored 12 points the other night in the semifinals, only a junior.
So she'll be back for her senior year.
She will she will not start, but she will play a lot.
And this is kind of becoming old hat for the Wesley.
Well, it's coming down to Macon.
Nikki Noto is going to tell us a little bit about their routine and how it's constantly staying the same.
Coach Jana Z and her Lady Wolves are creatures of habit veterans for the Macon Center plex, and you better believe they have a method to the madness.
And here's how it all breaks down.
First and foremost, even if they come in as a favorite, the hotel is never booked until Wednesday after they win the semifinal game.
Second place girls, they have to eat.
You know, they're going to have to carb load.
They go to Carrabba's.
They do it every year.
Christine Azar, She even gets a discount.
Now, guys, that is how frequent she is.
And lastly, the girls, they practice at Mount De Sales, which is exactly where Coach Azar got her coaching career.
That's where it all began.
She is the Pat Summitt, if you will, of high school hoops here in Georgia.
It's going to be another great game.
Let's see if she can take home another state title.
Thank you very much, Nikki.
We're going to come right back with the starting lineup.
Send your tip off.
We'll take a break from they may consider flights this is class action on George Floyd Broadcasting back here to make it coliseum.
We've got the region's starting line.
It's for both of these squads in the class AA championships for the Wesleyan Wolves coached by Jan Azar.
Their starting lights are going to be Katie freaking Junior wears number three.
Brittney Stephens, another cougar, number five, Jordan Frazier, the senior guard.
You've got Taylor Blackman, the junior Guard.
We're number 23 at Holly Wilkinson.
We just highlighted wearing number 32.
She's a six foot tall senior.
And for soccer, you've got Randy Wilkie, number five, you've got Amy Griffith, number 21.
The sophomore forward.
Amber Baker is a senior guard.
You've got Siobhan NAYLOR, a forward headed to South Florida, number 23 and number 25 to Amber Brown, the junior forward.
She's the talisman to the squad, five foot ten.
Your officials tonight, Andre Stephenson, Jodie Cantwell and Sandra Jones are going to officiate the afternoon for us.
Fletcher Proctor, Bob help.
We've got our statistician here, Kevin Barnes.
So we are ready to get this thing underway.
Bob, your opening thoughts right before the opening up.
Both teams have been in the vacant coliseum a lot of times, six of the last seven years for soccer, five times, eight times nine of ten for Wesleyan.
But I'm very interested in the first 5 minutes because both of these teams play pressure defense and let's see how the teams handle that and they pick it up immediately, nearly forcing a ten second call on the opening tip.
Wesley and the road darts going up against Sokka, who actually is the home squad here.
By virtue of that region championship dribbling is Grandy Welcome to see you.
Number five, trying to cross up looking for a little action on the inside.
Travel is going to be the call going against Shibata Lloyd the seniors small forward turnover and it's rusty it's ball now they like to pick up the pressure at half court they're actually extending it to three quarters quarter.
Let's see how Wesley tries to break it.
They do manage to get it over the stripe.
Thought about it 3 to 4.
She pulls it out.
Instead, it's going to be Britney Stephens looking to swing it around the perimeter.
They get it up top.
Here comes Stevens going hard to the basket with the left hand.
No good rebound.
Saka quickly up the floor, losing out of bounds, calling into the Western benches, talking to Amber Baker Wesley ball about the quickest way to break break the break oppressive to not get it wow it to set up.
That's what they are trying to do with that transition but they just got a little ahead of themselves.
Two possessions for southwest Atlanta Christian, two turnovers.
They get it inside quickly with the left hand they tried.
That was stalking and success will bring it back down.
Are the lady warriors they're trying to trap over there right from the sidelines.
Another tragic call.
Three possessions now, three turnovers.
So this Wesleyan pressure is just good suffering so far.
Here's a replay, Bobby.
The good defense, break it down for us.
Well, Jackie Cowan is was watch to make the press an ally if she can't.
Both coaches said that to us when we talked to him before the game.
But I asked him about the pressure defense.
They said you can score off the pressure defense, but you can't have those turnovers.
Three times down, three turnovers.
Obviously, they got to handle the ball better than that.
Andy Griffith picks up the foul.
The sophomore power forward first soccer as falling to the ground was Brittney Stephens.
She is up A-OK, though, and she actually just passed it off trying to go inside It dished out to the perimeter, now breaking it down and putting it inside.
That's Holly Wilkins up with the hand.
No good, though.
And quickly up the floor, is Saka looking for a guard or throw it away?
Wow, that's quirky.
Getting out to Holly Wilkins, spinning all the way around and just out of the reach.
They were trying to get it down quickly.
The block puts it.
We've talked about how many times both of these schools have been here, but it doesn't matter.
It's the state championship and you're nervous.
They're 17, 18 year old girls, 16 years old, and it's showing and nerves right now.
Didn't expect to see them scoreless.
So far, we've got 617 to play in the opening quarter here, making the class a championship hell ball is called.
That is going to favor the western walls.
So chances are has a very talented squad.
She's called this her most talented as she's ever had.
That's high praise.
Consider the fact that she has eight titles since 2000 to 5 for 15th year wrestling and 380 wins.
81 losses is impressive.
Breaking distance to the outside that's black she's thought about it goes baseline puts one up no go up from about 11 feet instead they're going to swing it around That's on the outside in and out Can't drop to Jordan Frazier foul is going to be called on the floor I believe we played 2 minutes and 8 seconds here.
The ball go through the hoop.
I don't think the that Saka has had a shot yet so they both have to settle down.
I said we'd worry about the first 5 minutes.
It's going to take a little bit longer than that to get into a rhythm of this game.
Lots of zone being thrown out there right now by Saka.
Kirk is going to fire from average.
No good tip.
The round itself is coming out the rebound.
That's a shotgun nearly stole stolen away.
In fact, it is stolen away.
That's another turnover out of bounds to Wesley.
So that's five turnovers in five possessions and she the coach has seen enough.
Jackie Cowan is going to take a time out here We'll take a time out quickly and and discuss what is she going to tell her team right now just to settle it down?
It's hard to settle down.
There is going up.
It's the Western and wolves and their constant pressure.
I think it's more the building.
And let's talk about playing the game at 11:00.
It's just not fun.
I remember in high school we played a game at ten or 11:00.
We got beat by a team that we probably would have beaten by 30 later the year.
It is not easy to get your girls ready.
Yeah, your boys, your high school kids ready to play Wesleyan 046 Zach only got one shot so far, but what do you think about starting the game at 11:00?
Even if you've been here as many times as Wesleyan, that's.
I mean, it's difficult for anybody.
But once you get out on the court, once the juices get flowing, I think it could be 12:00 at night, you know, 12:00 in the afternoon.
It doesn't really matter.
These girls out here, obviously the two best teams in the state, they've made it all the way through.
Jackie Cowan telling her team, let's set up a different kind of press.
And we talked earlier.
It's a 21 press.
It's all sorts of different things and it leads to a turnover right there.
You got to look at Jackie Cowan.
She very proudly said she went to Vanderbilt, was part of that program when they turned it around at the southeast conference power for 25 years.
And she was on the starting team that made that happen.
Now in her sixth year at soccer, they lob it in right to the inside block away by Fergie.
Maybe first the junior guard just slaps that shot attempt away from Amy Griffin out of bounds.
But it's going to stay with the lady warriors.
Here's the replay at this block.
Take a look at how high she gets up here.
Bob and Maxwell Ball and Amy, I think, took a little more time.
I think as a sophomore, she was thinking she had the basket made and she she didn't really protect with her body and turkey just knocked it away.
Turkey has the younger sister in there also.
That's a very famous family there.
They have a brother who hit the winning shot to get Wesley in a state championship a few years back.
And then he was the starting quarterback.
And I think there's six of them altogether coming to Wesleyan.
So at least three them that we know about it.
I think there's three more coming.
Full court pressure by Zach as we turn the ball over again.
Still scoreless five and a half to play here in the opening quarter.
They tried to get the ball inside to Holly Wilkins cutting and just running out of bounds A little pass to reach with Brittany Steve who's trying to corral the loose ball so it's going to be another turnover.
These two coaches are just absolutely shaking it and they were both so confident before this game that their teams are going to play well and neither one of them are handling the pressure right now very well.
Three turnovers for Wesleyan, six for something.
They're going to put it up off the glass with the left hand.
No good grabbing the rebound as Wesson, Holly Wilkins.
And they immediately go into a trap even up for miss But they want a basket whenever they kept their pressing a little deeper than they did against Charlton.
Yet at the other night it was at half court.
Now it's a three quarters quarter.
Now I think it's a set up and run their offense.
It is Stevens that ball's deflected nearly turned over and instead a foul is going to go against number ten Marquita Daniels the sophomore who was checked in for Jackie Collins Lady Warriors.
We mentioned earlier on they won that 26 state championship.
Of course, that's when West was competing in class two.
I believe Wesson getting at close to a title and eight.
And then they've won the last three, a clutch working with beautiful form as Fletcher may finally get some points on the board.
Took three and a half minutes.
Three points for Katie Burton.
She fires and connects in, like you said, with four four to play.
We finally have cracked the score.
Well, Wesson will be going back up the class to next year.
Have plenty of time to talk about that during the broadcast.
Coaches, our and myself both agree with that.
That's where they should be playing.
This could be a very interesting region they're in.
But let's worry about the state championship this year.
Right now, two points up and good for support.
Tate Nailer, she's got the first points for the lady warriors.
But now we're starting to get things going.
they gave her a three right there so she was actually behind the lot.
Two points up and good on the other side by Brittney Stephens.
Now the scoring is coming fast and furious.
Full court pressure by Wesleyan.
4 minutes to play.
They get it over across the time line.
Nearly a turnover there.
In fact, they do turn it over.
Coming up, the floor quickly off the glass is going to be Frazier.
No good.
Burton grabs the rebound.
Ooh.
All right.
BLOCK onto the tip by Belcher that was blocked away here comes back on the other end that's going to be off the glass and no good they got the rebound though try again set up for three that's ten we are tied up down five five with three three to play here in the opening quarter.
Isn't it interesting that the lid comes off the basket now both teams are moving in, scoring quickly after the action in the first 44 minutes.
That's Burke and she's going to put it up and good and it's now a 9 to 5 field.
So Mark Burton has five points on that after the break.
The pass that put it over the pressure.
This time foul is going to be called on the inside and they will go to the line for two shots.
The line will be 17.
Now with the senior forward, that was Jordan Frazier, one of four Wesleyan seniors who are going to play college basketball next year.
She'll be matriculating at Wofford.
Fowler is going to go against number 12, Jordan Frazier.
We'll take a break with them.
It's 9 to 5 Wesleyan.
The scoring didn't start very quickly, but it's going quickly now.
That shot right there.
Brittany Stephens, two points, Wesleyan on top early 9 to 5 here, the opening quarter, 307 to play in the first.
Take a trip around our great state of Georgia on Georgia traveler from the mountains to the coast, our traveling team explores the state's most beautiful, exciting and unique treasures.
Don't miss Georgia Traveler on the great GPB.
Boy, I tell you what, that David Selenski is one fantastic guy to watch.
He's been hosting this show for what seems like years now.
Check out old David on Georgia traveling Georgia Travelers, an institution at Georgia Public Broadcasting.
What a great job they do in so many things, terrain.
It's done a superb job of doing a lot of different things that Georgia Public broadcasting, she's been there, not the least of which is all the high school sports and what an honor it is to be participating in high school sports with Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Once again, not many states put on ten games live and bring it to the whole state the way Georgia Public Broadcasting does.
Wesley, in the midst of a 9 to 3 run and go in line for two, will be 17 Nailor and Alex Carter hit.
Alexis Carter has come in the game.
That's the lady we spotlighted.
She worked hard on it, recovering from the ACL and she got healthy just in time for the playoffs.
Scored 12 points the other night as she rounds into shape.
She is six foot one a junior and she will bring some size.
And speaking of size, look who's in for Wesley.
And now Caitlyn Carswell, who's going to University of Georgia and doesn't even start.
She's got a full out of school second free throws to go to any calls.
Girl grabs the rebound 9 to 5 your score early on Wesley and on top in about 3 minutes to play the opening quarter flipping it around the perimeter.
Here's a long ball from the outside no good That was an attempt by Jocelyn Belcher Wesley And by the way, he's now one of four from three point range for a 12 overall stock is two of six on the field.
One, two three from downtown blocking foul is going to go against Wesson.
I think they're going to tag the 21 Delta, the sophomore on that one on the floor, though.
So no free throw shots.
It's going to go on.
The end line tackle comes with nine players on their entire team, seven or eight that are going to play.
Wesleyan has 15 players who can go nine, ten.
That could be an advantage.
This game stays close.
Taking in the game is Wayne Jackson.
She's now dribbling at the top of the key down traveling.
That's going to be the call going against Jacksonville.
It is going to be a turnover.
Western will fall to the last time down.
Soccer took off the pressure and played man to man.
Now they're standing at half court.
Not sure if it's a man to man or zone, but that pressuring at half court this time.
Stephens Trying to cross the line.
There's a delay coming up with that is 2378 Baylor daylight putting it off its last offensive foul is going to be the call with Vince NAYLOR.
Turning it over and drawing that chart was Brittney Stephens, who has four points as the second foul, by the way, toward Nailor.
All the things that Wesleyan does want to try to do off the press.
Here's the crowd.
Take a look right there and see that Brittney Stephens does a great job of setting up.
She gets run over, but for her effort, she gets picked up and it's West Angle that's almost a foot advantage that Taylor has stepped is only five foot four.
Boswell, with the left hand no good to grab the rebound is the aforementioned Alexis Carter, who just came back to the start of this playoffs out with a knee injury.
You see number 15 with that knee brace on her left knee rock traveling is going to be the call going against soccer.
And that, I believe, is their ninth turnover in this opening quarter.
2 minutes to play, 9 to 5.
You score Wesleyan seeking that fifth straight overall title card.
Again, your rhythm, but you're just not getting many shots because of all those turnovers.
But they will settle down.
Here's a three point attempt to Belgium headshots No goal but Cosmo grabs the rebound, puts it up the glass no good and getting the rebound was 23.
Receiving this 45 Amber Brown foul is going to go against west for four.
Carswell came in the game I don't think Wesleyan had one second chance shot.
They bring in the six foot four University of Georgia bound senior and all of a sudden they're getting second shots.
Full court pressure even after the miss here.
Fletcher Holly Wilkins checks out of the contest.
Checking in, I believe is 23.
Taylor Blackman So the lineup out there right now for Wesley, it is.
Stevens 23.
Blackman 21 BELCHER You've got cooking and of course, the aforementioned college ball turnover in the back.
When you get to the key here she goes off move break down the lane two points up and good for Lauren perfect She leads all scorers now with seven points and it is 11 to 5 Wesleyan on top.
They try to beat that press.
They do.
And now they'll try to set up their half court offense.
They throw it inside.
Look at that height right there.
It looks like she has never missed a beat.
Just off, though, for Alexis Carter, the junior going up against Caldwell.
That's it's about six three against six for Bobby.
At the other end, Boswell puts it up with her right hand.
She's a natural left hander, but she pull up with her off hand and scores 13 to 5.
Your score as they go to the cross the time line, but right into a trap they nearly throw it away instead.
Now they've got numbers they're going to fire long to no good.
And Leslie grabs the board.
This is a90, Wesley and run thought the walls are starting to try to pull away early on with under a minute to play basket noted that will the ball two points between Caldwell off the bench Daniel Andrews who's sitting in the crowd the Georgia head coach looks like full court pressure again they break it this time Let's see if they can score off the break and the pressure.
CARTER And that shot was blocked by 44 Carswell right at the Perkins on state throw it up they try to go to 44 cause well again but that's a turnover that's just picked up here late in the first quarter.
They cross it over, put up a shot later.
No good grab it the rebound Sparky She now has 17 and she's cracking to rebound as well All the right down traveling is going to be the call turnovers Great idea though she tried to cuff the ball on her way to the basket there.
That's something she's probably done against her brother in the yard there because that was a very athletic play by her.
But she didn't get to that.
The rightfully called for the travel wholesale changes coming in for Jan Azar does not want one of her players to take the foul late with only about 12.8 seconds left in the first quarter.
We've got checking in landed Dooley.
You've also got 34 checking in this third for the Wesleyan wolves they quickly get a return trip for Wesleyan.
Here's Byrd in the game and making that deflection here.
She's another one that's got a four year scholarship offer to a college.
She'll be heading to Air Force to defend our country at the Air Force Academy and play basketball there.
Some difficulty getting it.
And they've got under 10 seconds to go.
She's got to start moving a trap or 5 seconds.
Puts it up off the glass that was going to roll around.
No good.
Wilkins grabs the rebound, and that is the end of the first quarter after one Westfield holds a ten point lead as they seek their fourth straight class title.
Wesleyan 15 South West Atlanta Christian five Jenny Zar has her team rolling defense.
Jackie Cowan She's trying to get her team on the scoreboard in a hurry.
We'll be back with the second quarter after this.
On GPB when welcome back to making the class a championship for the girls wrestling on top of soccer 15 to 5 and it's been thanks in large part to number four Lauren or it's number three I should say.
Katie Burke She has had quite the effort so far today.
You see her right here bombing from way downtown.
She got the game's first points on the board.
Here she is with the left hand putting it up and good.
And Katie Perkins, one of the starters, one of six Perkins that go to Wesleyan, you see right there at the right hand.
She has seven points early on in this contest does the junior great first step there.
My favorite movies, the one she got called for traveling, where she tried to actually cup the ball and take it to the hoop.
I don't think that the score is indicative of the way PSAC is played.
They got to eliminate the turnovers.
They missed their last five shots, but this is the type of team that will make a run in this game.
Wesley It's going to have their hands full before this is over and missed their last five and they've got to get something going.
They are out the they being outrebounded as well, 12 to 5 by the Western wolves who have just so much hype there on the inside.
Thought about Stevens.
I see his thought about it is that she's going to swing her perimeter.
You see the intensity defensively has picked up.
Does it matter, though, Katie Burke, who has now cracked triple double digits as well as it is taking the 18 to 5 lead and they picked up the trap in the back court.
A lot of pressure.
They're going to fire a long two.
No good short they grabbing the offensive rebound putting it up is Amber Brown.
She misses but she will go to the line of shoot to check out this ball to the bob on the replay right here.
They're swinging it all the way around the perimeter and into the corner.
It's going to go to Fergie.
King is going to put it up and she knows what to do with it when she gets a beautiful form on that shot.
Here it is.
A foul is going to go against 34 Missy Bird.
That I believe is the first for the senior shot is no good.
She'll have one more coming, though.
Will Amber Brown the lead there now over three from the free throw line so far in this contest.
One more coming and one more.
There you go.
That breaks a long dry score, gets them on the board 13 at that point into a 13 zero run by the West End.
Wolves double dribble is called.
So turnover now all of a sudden Jack Pound the head coach of Southwest Atlantic, she can kind of say, hey, we've got our power points going now.
Let's just pick up the pressure on defense, beat the pressure on offense and get some points in the basket.
That's the way they did it in the first quarter.
Long time, a lot of scoring.
And all of a sudden, after a point was made, we had them in bushels and that's what's been going on.
Washington takes off the pressure for the first time all night, playing man to man, dribbling with the right hand.
And now left hand is Brandy Wilkins.
She moves it across over to 21.
Andy Griffith Griffin almost loses it on the inside.
Instead, they swing it to the inside, dribbling around, spinning, putting it up, shot no good.
23 Nailor scramble on the ground tied ball is going to be called.
It will go over to Wesley.
So that's another key possession there.
That that possession arrow goes with Wesson and they get the ball back and get to keeps that double figure lead that they have.
I just think SAC has got to settle down and get something to happen here.
They're forcing some shots.
They're not used to being behind all year.
This is a new experience for them and they're struggling with it right now.
They get it to the inside the tally.
Wilkins Now they find parking out in the corner for three shot.
No good rebound is going to be trapped in by Andy Griffith quickly up ahead of the floor foul is going to go against Leslie.
It's a borderline I believe will be Brandy will be the senior guard and she will try to put two more points on the board.
Both teams play pressure defense.
Both coaches told us before the game they want to try to exploit that and make and try to turn the pressure into offense.
But so far, sack it just has not been able to do that.
Okay.
They're going to was on the floor before that shot was attempted.
So Jordan Frazier picking up her second foul instead it'll be now soccer try nice move puts it up off the glass no good And Wesley grabs the rebound Now it's just an unfortunate this right there.
I thought she was going to crowd those two six foot two girl being around the six foot four girl but unsuccessfully with the basket.
There's a long three pointer.
That's Holly Wilkins.
Her first points of the afternoon, they count for three point land and it's 21 six now with 6 minutes to play before intermission.
Quickly up the floor is soccer.
They will now wait for reinforcements.
Three point Bob attempted bouncing around in and out.
No good scramble on the floor.
A kick is going to be called.
It's going to go against Wesley.
Let's take a look at Hollywood pitch right here.
Bob Hughes, our player to spotlight.
She had four of these in the quarterfinals.
Well, good bloodline at the Wilkins family.
That's a Gerald's daughter and that Dominique's niece about that good stuff.
That's why he's the best in the business.
Bob helps Brookside, Fletcher Proctor here from the Macon Coliseum class, a finals for the girls.
They had that ball going to soccer and now they've given the ball to Wesley and leading by 15 with just under 6 minutes to play in the first half, they quickly get it up the floor and now they'll wait for everybody else to come right back down.
Brittney Stephens, she's going to drive to the basket, puts it up in between all those trees and it goes down.
They say she's five foot four.
I think she's closer to five foot.
But she has one heck of a basketball player been starting since her freshman year at Wesleyan.
Another turnover number last year.
She had a great game and now she's got six.
So far, this championship game that shot no good tipped out of bounds.
And that will go back to the Wesleyan Wolves.
Take a look at Brittney Stephens right here.
Three play Bob.
She's only a junior and I say the blister at five foot four.
But look at her among the trees I think you call this.
And second has called a time out here.
And they need it right now.
When we talked to their coach, she seemed very confident.
They've won 22 games in a row.
They acted like a team who was ready to take on Wesley and they weren't afraid of them.
Interesting that these two powerhouses making the final four in Division and Class one don't play each other, haven't played each other in five years.
I think just one common opponent this year was Saint Francis.
Very interesting.
But yet actually soccer beat Indy earlier on playoffs to advance to this championship game and you know that was a team of common opponents Saint Francis who of course was the team that that beat Western in that region tournament which relegated them to the second seed and therefore put them on this side of the road.
And Saint Francis is the team, the last team to beat PSAC.
So here's the team that's not in the playoffs and the final for Saint Francis.
And they are the only team to beat Wesleyan and Saint in soccer from class one eight all year.
Wesleyan hasn't lost a game in that state to a18 team in four or five years.
So Saint Francis deservedly is looking at this game saying, Boy, woulda, coulda, shoulda, we could have been here today.
And they beat both of these teams and lost a heartbreaker in the quarterfinals.
Second quarter field goals.
Nine points have been scored combined.
Wesleyan is three of five.
Soccer is over five.
Their one point is come from the free throw stripe.
In fact, Sock has missed their last ten field goal attempts.
Take a look at that.
Two of 16 for the game for soccer, ten of 25.
On the other hand, for Watson, a lot of second half for a second chance points, especially after the Buckeyes well into the game trying to work hard underneath there with that against Carter you can see them bumping around each other as they work the ball on the perimeter.
Brittney Stephens now is swinging around on the outside.
You're going to try a little bit of a lob to the inside.
BURKEY corrals.
It puts it up and good tell you Katie Perkins, she has five points in the second quarter 12 for the contest trying to go quickly to the basket is 21 Abby Griffin the sophomore she's going to dish it off putting it up off the glass no good is an improv brown and grabbing the rebound.
Wesley Here they come now.
Holly Wilkins goes right around one player, puts it up off glass.
That's good use of the body there.
Fletcher though she she had a height advantage over number five.
Wilkie and she used it shot attempt is going to be no good off the glass stepping on the out of bounds line is 15 Alexis Carter Wesley will have the ball let's take a look breakdown Holly Wilkins right here going look at that body control head up driving to the hoop and just controlling the ball all the way to the hoop.
Now she's taking it, but jump shot, Holly Wilkins.
No good.
Miss is out of bounds.
It's going to stay down there.
I think they're going to get the foul going against Holly Wilkins.
So it'll be soccer ball loose for 22 to go before halftime.
27 to 6.
Wesley at on top.
They'll have some subs coming in.
Caldwell will check in as well.
30 for Missy Bird and they are going to get 23 into the game as well.
Taylor Blackman checking into the western wolves.
Still full court pressure by Wesleyan.
Here's a take a look at the rebounds tonight 16 for Wesley to post just eight for southwest Atlanta Christian they doubled them up, thought about firing it Instead they swing it around.
Here's an attempt by number five.
WILKINS That's a three point attempt.
It's up and good Randy Wilkie gets on the board.
The understatement of the night that was needed very badly 27 to 10 your score now soccer looks to try to see if they can force some turnovers, try to get back to this contest before halftime shot it's no good three down by Caldwell it's no good soccer grabs the rebound that was number 15 all those turns it over instead coming Oregon's Amy quick number 21 out of the park looking for their guard to set up the offense playing man to man right now Randy Wilkie pressing his own and it's that ball back to Amanda man that's tough to do puts it up that's no good but going to line I believe will be 15 Alexis Carter Carter such an interesting story Bob missed most of the year with an ACL injury that happened over the summer.
She makes it back in time for the playoffs.
We'll take a timeout with West 8020, 79.
Soccer is going to try to get back on the board, though, with some free throws.
Coming up, we'll be back to the baby coliseum in just a minute on GPB 27 and on your score here in the second quarter, three and a half to go before halftime.
It's year two of GPB Sports Football Fridays at Georgia, and it's bigger and better than ever kicking off August the 31st with the battle the big chicken a double portion of high school sports action live from McEachern high school and return.
By the way, of all your favorite Friday night favorites.
Brooke, are you smarter to rent Check.
We get the previews of high school sports from around the state with our very own Jon Nelson and John's, Georgia.
From Ringgold to Valdosta, Savannah to Lagrange, we've got you covered this fall with Football Fridays in Georgia, and it's only on the great GPB.
But for how much fun if we had doing those games.
Over the years we've been almost at Tennessee and all the way down to the Florida border, over to the Alabama border, bringing high school football to the state as only Georgia Public Broadcasting can.
And it's been a lot of fun doing those games with you over the last three years.
Certainly has been fun.
We've got a great one here right now.
Wesleyan is 12 of 30 so far for the first half, 40% stock.
On the flip side, just 16%, three of 19 from the field.
But the clock is stopped right now.
They'll have a chance to put some points on the board, try to crack double double figures.
The stock has had 11 turnovers in the game.
They've controlled it a little bit better here in the fourth, second quarter.
But they have been struggling and they haven't been able to get shots.
Here's a great look at Alexia Carter Junior.
And you know, how many of these great players have we seen have to come back from me?
ACLU, Florida last year, I mean, at Ford last year and Carter from Buford and now this Carter.
So they work hard and they get the chance to play in the state tournament.
And this young lady and if you can watch her banging with 44 underneath, they're both physical young ladies.
Here's Boswell grabbing the rebound for Wetzel and just get a chance to look at the when they do set up it's gone up an alley.
You play if you will.
She put it up, catching it in the air and coming down with it for two big points.
Stretch this lead up to 29 to 10 and nearly a turnover.
Wesleyan trying to do all they can to pad the seed before halftime the drive to the basket.
The basket is up and good for a soccer that's going to bring them a little bit closer.
2912 is your score now with about 3 minutes to go before intermission, Brittney Stephens nearly loses it.
She has to dribble right into a double team to flip it around.
Now it's going to be off no good by bird.
A foul is going to go underneath.
However, that was that Carter and Caswell banging underneath again.
I think they got Carter for the foul that's going to go yeah that call going against Amber Baker number 22 the senior guard so it'll be out of bounds to the west in walks just seems like Wesleyan makes a substitution and every dead ball as they use that ten and 11 deep on their bench fired over to Holly Wilkins Wilkins going with the right hand moving it around nearly a travel referees decide not to blow the whistle there instead Griffin Stephens over to perking is right at the elbow.
Holly will get two more points up and get Holly Wilkins is really exploding in the scorers brook this second quarter just letting the game come to her 3112 your score we are in the second quarter here on the great jump Fletcher Proctor Bob out here make it coliseum working it inside shot attempt by Abby Griffin no good and number three Katie Perkins is at it again defensively grabbing rebounds blocking shots scoring 12 points so far in this contest three point attempt no good by Wilkins rebound grab by Antigua looking to work it up That's Daniels the sophomore back over to Wilkins Swing it perimeter shot attempt by 23 No good Now here comes Brittney Stevens.
It's number five.
She'll get it up.
That's Taylor Blackman.
No good.
Ball tipped around Carter trying to get it.
Throws it off of calls.
Well it's going to stay with Saka nice heads up play there By 15.
Alexis Carter managed to throw it off of a Wesleyan wolf player.
Take a look at this hustle ball.
Well, tipping it around the diaper of SAC.
I went down it about two or 3 minutes ago.
But during the last time out there, coach, who I can just tell as a competitor is trying to just muster up this team and you say you got to get it down to ten or something like that before you can even start thinking about it.
But right now they still trailed by 19, but they're showing a little bit more rhythm on their offense now.
They try to beat it.
They had the numbers there for just a second.
Putting it up.
Count the basket for 2317.
Taylor.
She'll go to the line for one more chance for the three point play the old fashioned way.
Bob, break this point out for us.
Well, she got the first step there and then when she got behind the player, she used her body very well.
And so I think one probably get out of the way on that when something like that happens.
But a chance for the three point play here, that's the second foul on the sophomore Belcher that is up and good I know you love those three point plays the old fashioned way is that you guys little old fashioned guy there's quickly easiest way just throw it over everybody Jordan Frazier gets some points he has a pair of fouls and working in the back court steals puts it up and good Katie Perkins at seven in the first, she's got seven in the second That's 14 by Mobile.
That's good.
Georgia.
Man three Actually.
Virginia Man For you.
Fletcher It's right Shot from just beyond the free throw line That shot's good by Shibata and Taylor.
She looks like she may have had to be surgery recently wearing a knee brace minutes to play before halftime.
3517.
Holly Wilkins gets it on the inside with the left hand.
No good.
Parker gets the rebound that's blocked.
She'll go to the line as a foul I think is going to go against 21 Andy Griffith but I'm just trying to figure out some way to give Osaka some hope here because they are a good team.
They've won 22 in a row.
They're ranked number one in the state.
They just got hit with a haymaker right off the start here.
Fletcher and eight, it really looked like there was a time there where they didn't know what hit them, but they're playing a lot better in the last three or 4 minutes.
But just how do you come back against 18, against a team that's won eight state championships and certainly seems geared for their ninth Katie Perkins misses with her first free throw attempt.
Believe it or not, that's the first free throw attempt of the afternoon for the Wesleyan Wolves.
And they go even deeper to their bench, this time digitally checking in.
The junior Guard will, give Belcher a little bit of a breather.
Belches a few fouls too.
I think they play 12 kids right now.
A second free throw attempt is up, but that one is no good.
They grab the rebound.
It's the aforementioned tally she'll miss.
And now here comes soccer quickly up as Amber Brown.
Amber Brown puts it up off the glass.
That looks good.
Amber Brown has three in this quarter.
It's 35 to 19 now.
Wesley in on top that for halftime for the half court pressure again she says don't throw all kinds of pressure out aggressively try to slow them down.
That's Brittany Stephens Tofurky makes a move to go around loses the ball she's going to be called for traveling good defensive play got a hand on the ball and that's what slowed her down.
And she just shuffled her feet in a great that play was very a forced error And take a look at it.
Sock it back Just a minute ago, Amber Brown running the court.
Pretend she's going to pass it off.
Instead, she takes it up, puts it in with the right hand, and that brings them a little bit closer.
Here comes the 21.
Griffin breaks the pressure, moving it around.
Here comes Walker to try to set things back up.
Carter Stolen away and it's stolen right back.
This will be going baseline making move to the inside and putting it up.
just shot missed by Daniels here comes Wesley and 10 seconds to go before halftime Brittney Stephens with a head of steam blocking is going to go against soccer That was one of those 5050 plays.
Our buddy Al Smith would say no, but you could tell right there immediately what it was.
Looking across the way at the head of officials for the Georgia athletic officials, he doesn't even cringe.
But I like to call that by who's in control and who's not there.
Very tough call.
The referees.
He made the call immediately.
Immediately he knew what it was.
Feet were not set a blocking foul.
So going to the line I believe for a one and one will be Brittney Stephens, the junior.
And now we get I think all the way down to the bottom of the bench for wrestling.
But I don't mean it derogatorily.
I come here so go is going to go play baseball, softball at Indiana.
She's a great softball player.
She's in the game right now for the last 30 seconds of the first half, first free throws up and good.
She will earn the bonus free throw.
It's 26 to 19.
She's the catcher on Wesleyan and she hits the ball a long way and going to Indiana and a scholarship, but stays out with her friends just to play some basketball.
Even the last 30 seconds of the half second free throw up.
And that one is good.
Brittney Stephens, 2 seconds left.
We did chuck it quick.
Good.
If it goes, just miss.
All right.
Your score at halftime, Wesleyan 37 soccer has 19.
Get it.
And Nikki Noto, we're going to try to go to Nikki Noto, who has Jarred Azar.
Nikki, if you're ready, take it away.
Coaches are with you right now.
Coach are leading right now by 18 heading into the half.
But you've been telling your players you want to you want to see them play with passion, play like they want to be here.
What more do you want to see from your team?
I want to see and play with passion.
I want to see them press, get the ball up.
The Court We got to stop slowing down and waiting for them to set up their defense.
I think we're doing a good job at times, but I want to see it all the time.
Push that ball up the court and I want to see more second shots, more rebounds.
Absolutely.
Thanks so much, Coach.
We'll see in a bit.
Mark, back to you.
Nikki, thanks so much.
We are at halftime of the first championship of six today, the girls single-A state championships coming up at halftime.
We'll hear from administrators from both high schools, will also see what fans are chatting about on the World Wide Web.
Plus, we'll see first half high life and stands coming your way next on the GPB halftime show.
Right now, Wesleyan will either over South Atlanta Christian 3719.
Welcome to our GPB halftime show.
I'm Mark Harmon.
Right now we're at the half of the girls single-A state championship game between Wesleyan and Southwest Atlanta.
Christian joining us now, the head mistress of southwest Atlanta Christian High School, Geraldine Thompson.
Geraldine, thanks for coming on with us.
Tell us a little bit about what the vibe was like at school, knowing that your girls team had made it to the Final Four and then, of course, the championship game this week and that felt disappointed that the crowd was not as large as it has been in times past.
But we're expecting, Geraldine, I think we're having a little bit of a problem with that microphone.
You just sit right there.
We're going to get to that.
We're going to go to Jackie Britt and she's going to tell us what folks are chatting about on the World Wide Web.
We'll get right back to you.
Okay.
All right.
Let's check in with Jackie now.
All right.
Thanks, Mark.
We struck a great conversation online so far, so be sure to keep chatting with us at GPB Dawgs Sports.
Let's get to a couple of comments from the chat in regards to our poll that we're also taking results on.
First comment, we have one fan watching from Atlanta says that back in the day, players would get in trouble for even talking to their friends in the crowd, much less using a cell phone during a game And then coaches like Duke's Mike Chesky would never accept behavior like that on the bench and he is the standard for coaching.
Great comments keep them coming at GPB Dawgs Sports.
But now let's jump into the results as they stand at the half the poll question today.
Is it suspension for using a cell phone during the hat or on the bench too harsh of a punishment or is it appropriate?
And right now you can see a whopping 90% of you say that it's actually appropriate.
Only 10% of you say that it's too harsh.
So if you agree or disagree with this, let us know online at Gtb Dawgs Sports.
And Mark, I think we going to send it back your way.
Hey, that sounds just great.
And we've got Gerald now, I think, miked up and ready to go.
Tell us what the vibe was like at high school this week.
Well, everyone's excited about the possibility of being champs again, and we're excited about just coming to Macon once again.
We don't want to miss not one year to tell you the truth, but We have more emphasis placed on academics than on sports.
And it's not that we don't like sports.
We're real pleased with that because we believe that it's a great outlet for the students, but we want them to play fair.
We want them to make sure that they don't put aside their work because we believe that anything that they do academically is going to help them as they grow older and as they prepare for college.
You know, during the football season, we asked principals and head mistresses about questions from the Georgia graduation test.
We're going to ask you a question now that's not on that test, but what's called do you Know your whole grains?
And so get the picture here.
Which one is what's that picture out of the whole grain?
It's a kind of grain that the dietary fiber is useful and have minerals, and it is processed in such a way to make the design to prolong shelf life.
So what do you think that is?
It looks like it may be Chex Mix.
I don't think so.
Okay.
I think that's oat bran.
Okay, I don't eat, but that looks good for you.
And I don't eat too much stuff that's good for me.
So we appreciate we appreciate your coming in and good luck that is my place.
All right.
We're going to take a quick break.
We'll be back with more.
The GPB halftime show right after this timeout.
And welcome back to the GPB halftime show or at halftime, the girls single-A basketball game between Wesleyan and Southwest Atlanta Christian.
Joining US now is Zach Young, the headmaster at Wesleyan High School.
And does this ever get old?
Your team has won four straight.
You're going for five straight this year.
It never gets old.
It's always fun cause it's a different group of girls every year.
The fact that you graduate from every year and it's a new group makes it always new and special.
Talk about the job that Jan Azar has done because.
You guys have won like nine in the last ten or 11 years.
Well, Jan is just one of the best coaches in the country.
And our children want to play for.
And so a lot of children come to Wesleyan because they want to play basketball for Jan, and that's just the way that it is.
They come in early grades in the middle school and stay and want to have what she gives them in the way of coaching for basketball.
They want the Christian education that Wesleyan provides as well.
All right.
Time to play our question game here.
And yours is Know your style of pants.
And so this style of pants originated in India.
It's a cross between a shirt and skinny jeans.
And the modern version was made popular by the rapper M.C.
Hammer.
So what do you think those are called?
I think they're Haram pants.
You know your pants.
All right.
That is correct.
Hair and pants is the answer.
Congratulations and good luck in the second half because you guys go for five straight wins.
Thank you, Mark.
All right.
We're getting ready now for the second half of the girls single-A championship game.
Let's send it now over to Fletcher Proctor and Bob Howerton for the call, guys.
Thank you so much.
Mark Wesleyan has a commanding 37 to 19 lead here at the half over southwest Atlanta Christian School, Bob.
And it was Katie Perky who was it seemingly was everywhere, whether it was gathering an offensive rebounds, blocking shots on defense, stealing the ball away.
Let's take a look at how they got to the here.
And you'll see right here in speaking out Katie Perkins boarding from the outside.
She lived out there at sea.
Here's another shot for Katie working up there.
The junior guard is all over the place.
Look at her.
Go right to the basket.
Put it up off the glass.
that quick first step that she showed a couple of different times and her back court teammate there, Brittney Stephens, had chipped in with eight points and the two guards scored 22 of the 37 points for Wesley.
And and I think this is the one where she wanted the tall timber, as we called it, and lays it in.
So they've taken great advantage of that offense when they break the press.
The guards have been responsible for scoring most of the points for Wesson.
I believe seven different players have scored for Wesleyan.
Nikki Noto is with West Atlanta Christian's head coach.
Let's go to Nikki right now.
Thanks, guys.
Coach, right now, you girls, they're trailing by 18.
You told them coming out here.
Go ahead and get the jitters out and quit panicking.
Did you see them settle down a little bit during halftime?
I did, and I saw them settle down.
But like I told them, we've got to go out, take care of the ball.
Be responsible when we're passing the ball.
And right now they're causing a lot of turnovers and we've got to minimize the turnovers if we expect to get back into this game.
And how about capitalizing on rebounds?
Absolutely.
The rebounding is a big part.
We talked about that as well, Boxing out on both ends of the court.
Specifically, though, defensively, we've got to box out and take care of the ball.
Good luck, coach.
Here's a take a look at the first half stats Wesleyan they've more than double the field goals for southwest Atlanta Christian 15 of 36 six of 27.
And what about those rebounds More than double the rebounds as well.
21 rebounds for Wesley.
I'm a little surprised by the turnovers.
Only 9 to 13.
It felt like the first few times down that sack, I just couldn't get the ball across the halfcourt line.
So there's been a lot of points scored off those turnovers.
But the big shocking statistic there is the rebounds 21 to 12 Shibata nailer, number 23 for Southwest Atlanta Christian is doing her part.
She's got nine points.
You need some help from her teammates.
Meanwhile, Jan Azar and Katie working, they are looking for yet another state title eight titles for Jana Czar.
Since 2002, they've won three straight Class two, Class A four straight overall, and they win yet another one we'll see here in a second.
Certainly looks that way right now.
I'll be honest, I really expected a much better game after watching the two semifinal games on Wednesday night.
Let's see what happens in the first couple of minutes of the second half.
Well, it was in the third quarter.
Well, southwest Atlanta Christian really turned it on in their quarterfinal win over Saint Francis.
They're hoping for yet another run.
They outscored Saint Francis 18 to 4 it route to a victory there.
We'll see if they could do it again.
Wesleyan is going to get the ball after a turnover.
Britney Stevens thought about it thinks wiser of it and swings it around to Katie working Burki going baseline Stevens is going to track that one down a dribble with the left hand second in the zone defense right now to start the second half Britney Stevens is going to go baseline putting it up block by 21.
Andy Griffin so that's how they get things started a foul the back court Saka has to be encouraged by that some nice defense by 21 Abbey Gore Amber Griffin take a look in here.
And she was getting some momentum up there and just used her probably about nine inches there.
I know Stevens, but Stevens is best when she's taking the ball to the hoop or when she gets that standing jump shot.
Dribbling now is NAYLOR and Taylor is going to give it over to the inside.
Off the glass.
just in and out for 2180, Griffin And Wesley grabs the board.
He's still a little tight.
The ball just not dropping through for them as they press.
And that's what happens, I believe, when you win 22 games in a row and all of a sudden you find yourself down double digits, it's very hard to just get yourself going again.
Three point attempts at the outside shot.
No good on the inside, though.
Wesley is going to get the rebound eventually.
And here comes Burkey, a nice crossover They working inside to Holly Wilkins off the glass that's two points good Our first points of the second half come from Holly Wilkins.
Still the full court pressure they break the time line right there thinking about a crossover going inside off the glass no good foul going to go against western Amber Brown who is one of two from the line, will go back to line and shoot two more.
She had three points in that first half.
The ball was on Carswell, who starts the second half.
She usually doesn't start the game, comes off the bench and does very well.
There's Gianna These are 380 career wins, a teaching moment right there.
She's helping out her back court a little bit.
Good that is firing.
That one is up and good for Amber Brown.
She'll have one more coming chances on what she has done since she came to Wesleyan is incredible to think about.
Almost unreal for her class that the headmaster's accurate enough and it never gets old.
But in years they've been down here ten of the last 11.
What a record.
I think you can say a Hall of Famer to be, no doubt about that.
She's working on another state championship right now.
Her team leads by 18 with 6 minutes to go in the third quarter.
That's two points up.
It's good for Wesleyan stretching that lead outs now 20 points.
Checking out of the contest as Amber Baker for southwest Atlanta Christian turnover nearly so close on a Christian gets it back Turnaround is no good and Carswell is fouled as 21 grips goes over the back.
Here's a look at that blast west of the basket Look at George bases on baseline hits it off the glass as they say when you look at this program Fletcher they start juniors they bring in they have a mixture of junior sophomores They just they don't play for one class.
They have three or four kids for each class playing.
It's that it's the ultimate of a program.
They work and on the inside that's in and out.
No good for Missy Byrd.
Southwest Atlanta Christian grabs the board.
Soccer needs to put some points on the board here trying to cut into this lead if they were to come back tipped it in a laptop nearly as lost right there as it's out of bounds off of Wesson, I believe it'll stay with soccer as well as playing very well tonight.
And the defensive end, I'm sure, as you said, Coach Andy Landers is here today in effect, looking across the way at him right now.
I'm sure he's going to enjoy having that six foot four frame playing for the dogs next year.
A nice move on the inside by Griffin.
That shot no no whistle is called step putting it off the glass is good.
Two points for Amber Brown.
So Brown quickly has four points this quarter.
517 play before the end of the third.
Now little pressure by a sack in the back court running a turnover almost this did not hurt was tricky with a four on one he's got four on one gets it up quickly to Carswell who just lays it in with the left hand.
And that is what you want to do.
Once you break the press, you turn the defense into an offensive play for you.
And that's excellently brought diagramed right there just to get it across the bench.
Now they've got a two on one.
Let's see what they do.
Same thing.
Two more points off the glass.
That was a nice play by Amy Griffin.
Her first points of the afternoon.
She has two fouls and now two points.
Both teams showing what you do once you get the advantage working in there, the inside gives it up to Wilkins up and down tie ball is going to be called possession.
Arrow is going to keep it with the Western wolves and Coach Azar is saying, I thought it was a foul.
Four and a half minutes to play record those officials as coaches.
And how about her when she is being interviewed?
She's ahead by 17 points at halftime and she how many things that she was wrong with her team when she was talking to Nicki?
They dump it inside to Holly Wilkins.
That's two points up and good.
So Holly Wilkins, four points this quarter, eight points for the contest.
50, excuse me, 45 to 25.
Yes, That's the mark of a good coach.
Fletcher When they just aren't satisfied, even when they're playing well, lots of contact bodies hitting the floor.
No call shot is missed.
And now here comes Wesleyan.
Holly Wilkins.
They want to slow things down to wait for some teammates.
Marmaduke gives her a three jerseys around her there.
Now they fast break at the other end.
Katie Perkins, her first points of the second half.
She has 16 for the game now.
Three 725.
Here comes quickly as Wilkie fast pace want to think would favor Wesleyan no doubt yeah here they come with their fast break dribbling with the left hand up off the glass and a flagrant foul is going to be go against number 21.
Amy Griffin So Gordon line will be Katie Perkins.
But that was about as soft a flagrant foul as you can have it.
Clearly, she was beaten in the play and kind of grabbed her and that's what the rule is.
So they'll shoot free throws with no one behind her and then they'll get the ball out of bounds.
A little bit of frustration, I think, on the part of southwest Atlanta Christian.
And so we'll take a quick we'll take a quick break.
When we come back, Katie Firth, he will go to the line and shoot to Wesleyan.
It has been all done in the second so far, 47, 25, 32 points there.
She's on fire.
We'll be back on the TBD.
Wesleyan 47, a 25 day lead over the Warriors of Saka here.
The third quarter of Macon Coliseum.

She might be one of the best players in the entire country.
That's what they say.
And just to have that in it, ten, 15, $20 to come there and watch all those games, it's just wonderful to do and highly recommend it.
I know I'll be there next, next, I guess, 23rd quarter field goal so far, Wesleyan four of seven.
Soccer two of seven.
Coach Jan Azar's team is out rebounding Southwest Atlanta Christian right now 24 to 14 and step line for a pair four after the intentional foul is Katie Perkins.
The first free throw is missed She'll have one more coming in.
I believe Wesleyan will get the ball back because of the intentional foul.
Nothing lonelier than being the only person out there takes a 90% shooter and makes him about a 60% shooter.
Not quite sure.
Right?
Because that's how they shoot them in the gym during practice.
But it just seems like those free throws when there's nobody around is a tough thing.
That's why late in the game, when a coach takes his players off, I don't understand that either.
The players just seem more comfortable or somebody underneath the basket.
It confounds Bob Health, but that's why we're here to figure it out.
Hitting the deck hard was Katie first, and right there, Coach Januzaj just got to smiling and she asked the officials what the heck just happened.
Laughing about it.
Actually, over there, Britney Stevens is getting a call from Coach Azar and now she's able to work it out in between the circles there.
We're playing a little.
So I think they want to bring him out of his own back to man and man.
And some people are playing man and some are playing zone.
Looks like they're all man to man right now.
Nice pick a set.
Britney Stevens thought about firing right there.
Instead, she dribbles into what looks like a triple team vertical, swinging all the way across the court.
A three point attempt launched in and out by Blackman and coming down with the rebound, a Southwest one at first.
Now quickly get it up the floor.
23 on 23.
Put it up off the glass.
23 Nails connects her first points.
The second half, she's in double figures, 4727, about 245 to play before the fourth quarter turnover by wrestling every time you just think that they could make a little bit of run, you look back at the skirt scoreboard and just realize how deep a hole they're in.
It's still 20 points, even though they're playing better in the second half, but they just can't cut into the lead.
And Wesleyan is showing why they'll be moving up the two way next year and probably doing very well there as well.
BELCHER And I believe Frazier checked in some reinforcements for Jan Azar's squad tipped away and coming down with it.
Southwest Atlantic trying to go baseline, putting it up two more points for Nailor.
So she's starting to find her career edge.
They just didn't have a rhythm or a confidence like that in the entire first half.
Now they're starting to play with a little bit more confidence, but it's going to take a miracle to get them back in this down 18, trying to up the pressure a little bit so they go out, man all the way missed shot.
Carter grabs the rebound and it's two.
Here we go.
Best moves right there.
But she's doing that to take this basket.
Now they come back the other way.
They have numbers now they're thinking about will fire is 22 shot no good from Baker.
And now here comes West land with a steal here Ball stole it away.
This is going to be Carter.
She'll pop it drop.
Check that basket.
Daniels Just the two 4731 Wesleyan still leading, but the crowd here is starting to come alive for soccer.
The soccer supporters and the man defense this time, foul is going to go on the floor.
No, they're going to say two shots looking for Jordan Frazier.
This crowd got loud there for a little while, but we're right in front of the warrior nation.
I think that made the trip down to Baker.
They came a long way and they had to say not much to cheer about in the first 16 minutes would be the understatement of understatement.
They just couldn't get the ball even to the basket several times, all those early turnovers.
But this is a good team.
I've said it several times.
You have said it several.
I'm stunned that this has turned out this way.
You know, I know how good wrestling is.
But when you sit when you saw this game the other night, Southwest Christian, they've been number one most of the year.
And never worse than number two.
They have dominated most of the teams they played.
This is just not expected at all.
And second, free throw out the Good by George Frazier.
Guess it just shows you how good wrestling really is, doesn't it?
FLETCHER But Jan is are is called this perhaps their best team ever and saying you're at the school that is a shot that was deflected so no travel there but instead coming away with it it is 15 Alexis Carter she'll look to put one up can't find the range Carter is girl Northwestern in the early game she has not really in the fact that she was in the semifinal game thought about firing instead she's going to tip it.
Carter a nice defensive play there.
And Stephens will set things back up.
Perkins thought about taking a three and said she'll pull up about 14.
No good tipped around and Daniels brings it down and his running away losing it out of bounds.
It's going to stay at that on the floor.
Add one player a little slow to get up.
That is Marquita Daniels, the sophomore for soccer games.
Getting a little physical right now.
We'll see it right here.
We'll see how physical is on this replay.
Watch her.
Coming up, the court and the contact right here.
A lot of contact on both sides and said they're just going to say it's out of bounds, no foul.
And ten and she is right there on the sidelines and a little bit of panic to action.
Back out on the floor now.
Amber Brown, 25, has it near the mid court line where she gets it off to Brandi Wilkie, the senior guard, number five, guarding number five.
They'll dump it into Carter.
Carter makes a move, try to go around.
Caldwell puts it up with two hands.
No good.
And Wilkins grabs the rebound.
FRAZIER Now they pick up defense.
That's tight defense.
It goes deep into Houston, pulls it out.
Instead of looking the hoop under 30 now to play here the third quarter Wesleyan with a 4931 lead over the warriors of southwest Atlanta Christian double team is good picked up Looks like they're holding one but it's also been very good defense there.
But I think they're holding to the last shot.
I think they are.
I'll agree with you there, Big Bob.
How Caldwell gets over to Wilkins ball nearly taken away Wilkins with under five space move to 4014 It's going to beat the buzzer Holly Wilkins Wow she had six this quarter Wesleyan takes that 5131 lead into the fourth and final quarter Can they hold on for their ninth title since 2000 to their fourth straight Class eight title?
Can they win five in a row?
Take a look.
Holly Wilkins dominated.
We'll be back at the Macon Coliseum with class action on the great DVD.
That is what they are playing for here at the Macon Coliseum.
This is the Class eight girls final Wesleyan entering the fourth quarter with a 20 point lead over southwest Atlanta Christian Jan Azar.
She has won eight titles since 2002.
Bob, that is amazing.
You cannot say more about that.
I mean, that's incredible.
And there are 8 minutes away from adding the ninth and 381 wins.
If she gets that and a team that will be loaded to go again next year, it's a school that's done very well.
We're very proud to be part of the Director's Cup.
Wesleyan has a dominance and that should be very interesting next year when they go to the same region with Westminster Lovett and Greater Atlanta Christian, that is going to be one heck of a two way region next year.
And both boys, girls sports.
Let's see what happens in the last 8 minutes.
FLETCHER Holly Wilkins tips it away so no over that call dribbling it now it's Brandi Wilkins she was scoreless in that third quarter working it around and one player that got hot in that quarter was Siobhan Taylor, 23.
We'll see if she can stay hot ball blocked and taken away by Caldwell who's Frazier quickly up the court by number 12 She misses calls going to go against Daniels 21 will be number 12.
Jordan Frazier the senior sophomore spokesperson Take a look at it.
It starts with a block six foot four Caswell blocking six foot one.
CARTER And away they go with the ball.
I don't think we had a guy who's six foot four at my high school basketball team and we were good.
But now they got six foot four versus six foot one at the girls level.
It just shows you what great athletes we have in the state of Georgia and who are the best high school girls basketball anywhere right here.
One of two is Frazier from the line.
And corralling the rebound was it they work it out the floor quickly going baseline back to back Griffin I believe another block blocked out of bounds Boswell playing great jam how about two McDonald's All-Americans going against each other and here's the block you're going to see right here Here's the block coming right as well And that was Kaitlyn Caldwell tipped around, getting the rebound and putting it up that good.
That's 23.
She bought a nailer, so she's trying to pick it up.
She starts by running the floor at the other end of the court, traveling in a great pass.
But she just shuffled her feet before she put it up.
Wesleyan has been out rebounding soccer so far, 28 to 17.
That was coming in to the fourth quarter.
They picked up a few more rebounds, it seems, and they're shooting about 44% from the field and scoring off of turnovers.
That's how they've gotten that field goal percentage up by getting second half shots and rebounds and also turnovers at a very easy basket.
Remember, they didn't start very strong their clutch here, but they've been shooting probably a lot better than 50% since the first 5 minutes of the game.
Ty Ball was called.
It's going to go over to Wesson on the alternate possession vertical will work it in to Stevens, a junior to the junior.
You talk about what she has coming back next year.
Those are two pretty good building blocks and gianna's on it.
So scary picture.
I was thinking the exact same thing as they throw the ball to each other.
You're 100% right.
Kayla Carswell draws the foul.
She's had a fairly quiet night in terms of points, just six points, but three blocks.
Kayla Boswell She could make her presence felt for blocks.
Now Kaitlyn Caldwell was four blocks in the contest.
As Daniels goes to the bench, she's in foul trouble as well for Southwest.
When Christian, she makes her presence felt in other ways, not just in points.
Very good on the defensive end.
Boy, that day they play defense their first two points up in good she's she had a quiet third quarter with just two points but now she has 18 for the game.
And as they say, she's another one who will be back seven O West in run looking to build on that.
Jordan Frazier takes it away.
She's got the numbers, but she'll kind of pull it out a little bit.
Slow down the pace.
Now Brittney Stephens will think about doing what she does with 620 to play this fourth quarter, working the perimeter a little bit between Stephens and Quirky.
I think we see Perkins younger sister get that week.
Mark, She's the only girl on the team that hasn't played so working it around, they get it inside to Holly Wilkins with the left hand.
That's up and good.
So Holly Wilkins, her first points of this fourth quarter under six to play Wesleyan with a 5633 lead turnover will fall.
Take a look at this last basketball talk about Stephens starts it with her initiate and right there and gets a download of Wilkins.
But again, Stephens made that play by driving the range and then moving well without the ball was Wilkins Frazier other.
That was the 50th turnover, by the way, for Sorkin.
At least two more points for Cady, for Perkins work for the left hand, the right hand.
She's gone out and played the three point shot.
She can really do it.
I've seen her play several times, but this is by far the best game I've seen her have.
And now the coach that Jackie Cohn, I think just because of frustration timeout right now and just want to talk to your team as well saying it's expanded this lead to 25 points it all starts with defense and all the tremendous offensive players that they have.
If they don't play defense, they sit on the bench.
Jan is our work in her team now.
You never tell she's up 25 points with 5 minutes and 33 seconds to go in this class.
AA final from make it.
But she's telling everyone this is a teaching moment again it's it's what we need to do.
Let's pretend like the scoreboard doesn't exist.
Let's continue to play hard.
And she was talking to one of those players you just saw in the huddle was Katie Birch.
Let's take a look what she's done, this contest, just a little bit of everything we're going underneath there for the basket now, driving with her left hand.
And that will have a three point shot in here before it's all over, because she has just got great form on that as well.
A tremendous player.
And, you know, several sophomores make her way in there.
They're listening, they're watching.
They're learning the Wesleyan way as jams are 25 points ahead.
Some coaches be bringing in some of those sophomores, and I'm sure we will before the night's over.
But this is a program that just has that consistency that goes without saying.
When you win nine state championship ups in 11 years.
Katie, working right there has 20 points now for the contest two blocks, for four from the free throw line.
I guess there's a bucket she's going to run.
She's going to run laps for that.
Fletcher Yeah, but 20 points.
She has certainly been a player to watch out for today and will be one to watch out for all next season long.
Her senior year, Saka trying to get back in this thing put some points on the board in a hurry, working it around on the perimeter, moving the inside 25 going up was Amber Brown, but she's going to be called for the turnover.
That's the 16th turnover of the afternoon thanks to the categories she's been providing us with stats all game with the best in the business.
We appreciate Kevin.
He worked with us in the football games last year and we love the job he does for us.
Thank you.
Like Kevin, Holly Wilkins puts it up.
It's two points.
He'll go to the line for two more and that with 509 to play, Wesleyan is trying to add it slip up and there's the ball set up by the pass down low and then she just uses her body and gets it up.
She was hit two or three different times and that still had the strength and the power to put it in.
But once a good pass from the guards is an 11 to 2 run right now, Make that a 12 to 2 run.
As Holly Wilkins hands the free throw.
So far in this quarter, Wesleyan is three of four soccer, just one of four from the field.
And that's kind of been the story of the whole game.
It started that way early and just got out of control early.
And Wesleyan has dominated in all aspects of the game.
Perfect was sandwiched right there and grabbing the rebound was 21 that she misses.
And now here comes the wolves if you step on the inside.
She did another great effort by Crosswell to get the rebound in and then after she gets the rebound she knows what to do with it.
It wasn't the best mishandling of the ball, but they run with the ball after a foul or after after a rebound.
You see Jordan Frazier right there, one of the seniors on this Wesleyan squad.
She will leave here with four state titles in the next minute, 44 seconds, and headed to Wofford.
Ally Wilkins is going to Furman Caswell to UGA and Missy Byrd to the Air Force Academy.
Wesleyan is going to pick up the foul right there.
That is only there, I believe, third team foul of this period.
And by the way, they picked up the foul.
That's just her first hit.
A two time all Miss Georgia Player of the year playing for the Bulldogs and Anne Marie Armstrong.
So the tradition is long and deep at Wesleyan holding the ball now is Jaxon Jackson, the senior point guard is going to fire from three point range hit it out no good rebound tipped around and BURKI is going to come away with it and get it over to Stephens.
Now Stephens looking to run with 420 to play in the fourth blocked but foul is going to go against Andy Griffith that's her third fourth foul of her 18 year call again that Stephens running this offense the fricken can do it in a slightly different way but penetrating and dishing and finding her teammates and this time a teammate gets to go for the free throw line.
Holly Wilkins is made now two straight free throws trying to make up for Katie Perkins.
She's bringing the average down on the first drive.
We get a four second free throw.
That one is up and good.
This working is not done a lot wrong today.
20 points, a handful of blocks.
We got to have the rebound.
She as she may be approaching a double double as well and a couple of turnovers as well.
Well, now why do you have to be Mr.
Negative?
I'm trying to say what she's done.
I'm in create turnovers.
I'm sorry.
Jackson forced turnovers.
Excuse me.
Boswell is going to draw the or pick up the foul Is she a little bit of contact or trying to block that one using that six foot four frame going up against Jackson who's just a shade under five eight?
That's three fouls now for Kaitlyn Boswell.
You see right there on the replay, a little bit of contact defense.
That's the free throw is missed by Jackson.
That was her first free throw attempt of the evening.
She left one more coming.
Wesley involved.
You like this as cause well, that may be it for her as the crowd is giving her a nice ovation Western on a 6 to 2 run since a minute 39 to play in that third quarter.
And they had a 13 to nothing run in the midway in the second quarter two and both runs were pretty much generated by their defense, creating havoc and making the plays.
Timeout is going to be called by Janet Azar.
She'll take a 32nd timeout with 4 minutes and 3 seconds left to play.
In this contest.
They lead 63 to 34.
What does she tell her team right now?
Well, you know, I was just wondering the same thing.
I thought it might be the time to start cleaning the bench.
There was some smiles there as they're talking to each other.
And it's a loose team right now.
And, you know, there's a great story in the Gwynedd post about Jan hour when she started this, she actually had a they didn't have a team that any other coach.
She said, Hey, I can do this.
And they set it up for her to do that.
And and and there it is now, just seconds away from her ninth state championship, Georgia Tech whiz kids have teamed up to compete for cash in a US pack for the 2012 adventure Prize at Georgia Tech.
Tune in to GPB this Tuesday, March the 13th at 7 p.m. to see the six finalists demonstrate and defend their innovations in front of a panel of expert judges and see who will be this year's champion.
Wowsers, this is something you can't miss.
And it's only on GPB.
Still, a lot of the starters in the game into the start of the game.
Furkan That's two points.
And good for Holly Wilkins.
She has exploded.
It's now five of six from the field goal area.
So we're working the baseline very well and being the recipient of some nice passes from both her guards.
The rebound for Wesley and here they come again, about 335 to play here the fourth quarter Wesley cruising now 65 to 34.
They work it on the outside Checking out of the contest, we should say, is Nikki McDonald, a freshman?
Some new faces in there, 21.
Belcher has checked back in as well.
If you're going to call that, that's going to go against, I believe, is it 32?
They're going to go against Jackson.
So going to the line will be that freshman Nikki McDonald.
This has got to be a good experience for her as she looks to continue her career here at Wesleyan.
She's got six foot freshman coming in the game and getting some playing time Shot is no good.
She'll have one more coming.
No checking into the game is the other four.
This is Lauren Perkins, the freshman, and she will check it for her sister.
They're not letting her come in the game right now.
A little confusion there.
Now they're going to let them do that.
The two sisters.
Okay.
I guess that was a one and one.
And it seems funny.
The only one that realized it was a one on one was Nikki McDonald.
She kind of went after it.
The official stopped her.
And you see right there the emotion on the sideline.
She'll have one more possibly next year.
Katie Pearcy She's getting help from her sister, getting the turnover as soon as she comes in the game, foul is going to go in the back court against 22.
Amber Baker 22 and Baker is walking the sidelines and that's just the second foul for 22.
Amber Baker trying to play the lonesome down there that maybe she can look at.
She's trying to do it and 13 is a freshman comes down to pick her up and kind of smiles at her.
And I see it down there.
Senior Steps to the line.
Jordan Frazier, she is three of four from the line today.
Free throw is in an out no good three of five.
But here comes with 3 minutes to go southwest Atlanta Christian 6534 the score Wesleyan leading tiptoeing around and Jackson gets the rebound still competing hard as soccer shot no good but she'll go to the line and shoot a pair.
Well Brandi Wilkie Ray Frazier has now that it's going to go gets the senior Frazier she has three fouls now and looks like she got other stuff is moving to the scorer's table for Wesleyan Alexis Carter will be back She's a junior.
Margaret Daniels is a sophomore.
Amber Brown is a junior.
And they've got some young players coming back that have played a lot of minutes for them in there.
Let's not forget, 22 game winning streak is going to come to an end here.
Checking into the contest is four this see Byrd and Caldwell checks back in and getting some action with Vickie McDonald she heads back to the bench second free throw up that one is no good.
But Carter grabs the rebound.
She's going to put it up from about 18 feet.
No good.
Caldwell tips to herself, grabs the rebound, gets it over to Frazier Little surprised it like you they were done for the day it's hard to the scores table going down Jordan Frazier she gets up everything's okay take a look at this hit right here full body check.
It looked like a hockey player right there.
Ooh, And her head a little right here.
Take a look at how she hits she gets up.
She's okay.
It's actually a good thing that that board gave away a little bit right there.
And they're going to a flagrant foul.
Shoot it all by yourself Frazier after the technical foul makes the first she will have another coming but she cans that one and they'll have to fall back with 236 to play Wesleyan on top six.
Now the wholesale changes come for Wesleyan A all the starters Getting a hug is a lot of emotion out there.
You see.
Checking in will give you quickly.
Linda Dooley, 22 Coming in.
Kanter tallies number ten checks in Hannah Hoskin her first action of the game.
We mentioned Dooley a second ago, Tennessee Brittney Stephens in there as well as number 20.
Nikki McDonald back.
So the only starter still out there is the point guard Brittney Stephens, the junior, probably just to bring a little order to everything Haskins is going to put up with the left hand no good.
They try to grab the rebound, but getting the steal a turnover has.
Dooley catches it and her momentum her into the backcourt could have been over in back could have been walking as well.
You see right there, one of the youngsters is only a sophomore.
Dooley and they're on the sidelines.
Some of the starters of the regulars getting one final hug tip the round.
Stockett grabs the rebound up.
That's no good Carter, No Good plan.
A little volleyball that's going to get it in.
Daniels gets her first points in the fourth quarter, 6737.
2 minutes to play here before a champion is Brown.
It looks like 55 Karabila.
Syracuse will check in as well.
A shot no good rebound by sucker.
Give it over to Jackson.
Jackson to the ball from downtown.
That shot is no good out of bounds.
And that's going to be a chance to get another sub in there for wisely.
Caribbean Syracuse goes checks in as does number number two toI JJ it's a tucked in for the season for southwest Atlanta Christian but they deserve a lot of credit here for making it all the way to the championship game came in as the number one team in the state and came in with a 22 game winning streak.
That was just not to be continued as Wesleyan shows their dominance the fourth time.
Fletcher That they've come back to me and that number one seed to win a state championship.
Chances are said that losing that first game made coaching a little easier the next day, Marquita Daniels will go to the line and shoot a pair she missed.
Chances are just a moment ago on your screen, still coaching.
She's up by 30 points with less than 90 seconds to play still coach at first free throw up it no good.
These young ladies that you're seeing out here right now, assuming that this tradition continues, will are learning for the future.
They will be the same next year, some two or three years from now as they play sophomores and freshmen.
To finish off the last 3 minutes of this game.
Take it free, throw up it good and look at just on the bench.
Brittney Stevens.
This is going to be your third title.
Yet she's overcome with a little bit of emotion right there.
It's great to see in high school sports moving it around and take it away.
That's Carter.
Here she comes.
A great story.
The junior puts it up shot.
She's a tough day, but they will have her back next year.
Her dad is a former player as well and it's coached her well.
And there's a fall that it's going to go against.
Yes.
And it'll be Southwest Atlanta Christian's ball battle is going to go against Carter Talley, the Cougars first down deep under a minute to play here before Wesleyan is going to take their fourth straight class title, their fifth in a row before that, the 8 to 8 title before they move back up to two eight next year.
Here's a three point attempts.
But the outside check that just two points for Brandy Wilkie, 67 to 44 score under 40 to play.
Now both teams still working and playing well two point guard right now, but the young lady knew what to do with the ball and got it up.
The court That was a take it to the basket.
She'll get to shoot some free throws here.
Talley A second.
Straight to the basket.
You have one Team Dooley coming over to talk to Coach Azar, give some tips here what she needs to do a step.
Devine is 22.
Kanter Talley with her first chance at some points.
She played a little bit earlier in the game.
She's a five foot nine junior free throw.
She dips up and that's good.
She'll have one more free throw coming.
As you see Jackson leaving the game.
Coming back in was 25.
Amber Brown and over on the sidelines getting a hug.
I believe that's Brandy Wilkie, a senior whose high school career will come to an end at the state championship game.
Getting a heart for coach Jackie Kelly.
And the important thing is in a state championship game.
Matt, Matt, real fun right now as they look at the scoreboard.
But you add another couple of weeks, they'll say, Yeah, we played in the state championships.
Yeah, we've been to the final four down here three, six of the last seven years and that they have a program at Southwest Christian Academy that they can be very proud of as well.
Now about the principal and headmistress at halftime, you can just tell she's an educator.
It's a great school down in the south side of town, Atlanta, and they've got a great program that stresses a lot more than just athletics soccer.
That shot is blocked from three point range, 7 seconds left, 6 seconds wisely.
It's still competing hard, as is soccer.
That's two points up.
A good play.
That was my cue to Daniels, and that's going to be it.
Your final score wisely class champions.
If you see a ball here, you got that midcourt 68 to 48.
I think that's a smallish player just reacts to the display right there.
You see a couple of sisters sharing a hug right there.
What a special thing this is for the Wesleyan Wolves five in a row.
They are the class, a state champions for 2012.
The Wesley Girls, as you see a good look right there.
A couple of seniors hugging Mark Harmon that's going to hopefully have the trophy presentation here in a couple of minutes.
Now, see if we can get an interview as well with Coach Azar.
Bob, I got one question for you.
Jan Azar, the best high school coach of all time in Georgia, high school girls, statistically, it has to go that way.
She's won 381 games.
She's won nine state championships.
She's been down here now ten of the last 11 years.
And as I said, I can't wait to see them next year play at GHC.
What a power they are.
Lovett was down here in the Final Four Westminster, a strong program that's just in their region, and all those schools usually dominate in the Director's Cup.
They're all going to be playing each other in every sport.
It's where Wesleyan belongs.
That's where they deserve to play.
All right.
Well, step away and be back with the trophy presentation.
Wesley, congratulations.
You are the 2012 Class eight girls champ.
We'll have more coming up next on the great GPB Fletcher, Roger Fletcher, Parker, Bob out here at the Beacon Coliseum where Wesley has just knocked off southwest Atlanta Christian on a score was 6844 20 points for Katie working and I believe Mark Harmon is up on the stage getting ready to hand out a trophy along with Dr. S, as they will welcome the victorious coach of Wesley to Jan Azar.
Take it away.
Mark Fletcher, thanks so much.
Congratulations to the Wesleyan Wolves, Winners of five straight champions now.
Congratulations there.
And I turn it over to Ernie Yarborough of the USA.
I want to echo congratulations, Coach Aizawa and Wesleyan.
We're pleased to have Georgia Farm Bureau as our presenting sponsor.
So at this time, we want to present the championship trophy to the Wolves on behalf of Georgia Farm Bureau Wesleyan.
Congratulations.
Come on up, Coach Azar.
Come right this way.
Come right this way.
Congratulations.
Tell us what it means for you and your squad to win again this year.
this is a new team, and we're excited about it.
Fifth in a row is exciting for all of them.
A lot of them were here last year, but these right here, I think they represent our school and our program so well.
And I'm really proud of the way that they all played tonight and all of the girl, the younger girls also.
Ollie, you're holding that trophy.
Raise it up high there.
Show everybody that Million Watch smiled as a senior.
What does it mean to you?
Four in a row for you, obviously, as they've won five in a row, nine in the last 11?
Yeah, it's definitely a team effort.
I can't do any of this without my team.
And every single one of them plays such a big part in this.
And like now you never know who's going to step up and have a good game.
And I just really couldn't do about any of them.
And so it's a team thing.
It's all family.
So, Kaitlyn, how proud of you to be a part of this program?
I'm extremely proud.
I feel extremely pleased to be such.
You had such a wonderful program at Wesleyan and coaches on the rest of our coaches, they're extremely dedicated.
I was like, not just on the court, but also off the court that make sure we're, you know, we're presentable young ladies and we can handle anything like any of this without them.
All right, Coach Azar, once again, congratulations.
And of course, you've got your seniors up here.
You've got your other team coming back.
You got a lot of great juniors and sophomores coming in.
Yeah, we hope to be back again next year, but we're going to enjoy this one right now.
All right.
Congratulate US, the Lady Wolves of Wesleyan, they've now won nine of 11 five in a row, and it's now time for the GB tailgate party to tip off.
All right.
Welcome back to the USA Basketball Championships on GPB and congratulations to the Wesleyan girls for sailing right over southwest Atlanta Christian Academy for that championship title.
We've got a lot coming up in our tailgate parties that don't go anywhere.
Let's kick things off first with our online chat.
We want to remind everyone that you can chat with us all day long by logging on to GPB dot org slash sports and tell me who your favorite players are.
Who do you think will win the rest of the games today?
We've got a lot of them.
And where are you watching from?
Also, let's jump into the results of our poll that we've been following all day long.
Our question to fans today is suspension for using a cell phone during a game too harsh of a punishment or is it appropriate?
And as you can see, an overwhelming 80% of you say, yeah, it's actually appropriate.
So be sure to keep voting with us all day long at GPB, Georgia, slash sports and get involved in the conversation.
And we will keep you posted as the day goes on.
Mark, I'll send it back to you.
Good to see you.
Good to see you, too, Jacki.
Thanks so much.
We're getting ready for the boys class one, a state championship game and one school in that division chose not to continue their tournament this year.
Jon Nelson has that story.
Mark, it goes back to October and to football season.
Warren County in Hancock County had a game on the field that ended in an assault in Sparta, in Hancock County, and also ended up with a lot of national attention in a bad way.
The two teams are supposed to square off in basketball in the region tournament superintendent for Warren County Carol Gene Carey, said.
We just couldn't go back there.
Right now.
We'd have 1800 fans separated by, you know, the small court and anyone in the fans in the fan stand might see a foul and think it was flagrant or have their own opinion and try to get people all stirred up.
And we just risk that I couldn't guarantee the safety of the fans or the players.
And that decision affects a rivalry separated by a 40 minute drive from Warrenton to Sparta.
And if there's anyone who knows what this is, it's the hometown coach on the Hancock bench.
And as long as I can remember, we've always been a rivalry when I played, you know, there's always been this, you know, border wars, you can call it.
But, you know, we get on the court and play and then after the game is is the pair of Warren County call wanting to establish meetings hey, can we get together?
Can we do this?
I say, sure we are.
We never want to stop playing.
You.
It was a decision on your end.
And of course I have to honor and respect that decision.
But the void on the court goes much deeper than that.
It's not just a basketball issue.
It's a life lesson.
Both sides are learning the hard way because it was an opportunity to really to to show students how, you know, we manage situations and how we handle we resolve conflicts and how we come together in and resolve them instead of just, you know, not come together at all.
If there's one thing reinforced by the current situation, it's the resiliency of the teenager away from the issue.
I give them credit for the way they handled themselves.
They blow up.
I know it was very emotional and very heart hard to take the situation, but they handled it very well.
So, Marc, from a football perspective, head coach David Daniel for Warren County is still having to go to speech therapy classes and his neurological examinations.
We're going to have an interview with him coming up as we get closer to football season.
Warren County Boys basketball season ends prematurely, so there's still a lot going on.
We're going to have the executive director of, the GHC doctor elsewhere, and then on the later on in the day to get what the GHC can actually even say in the investigation right now.
Yeah, he's going to be on before the two a boys game.
You got it.
We'll see you then.
All right, John, thanks so much.
As we enjoy the Boys and Girls basketball action here on GPB, Georgia Public Broadcasting is also making preparations for a big high school football year.

The GPB Tailgate show continues.
We're getting ready for the boys single-A championship and we have a special guest dropping by Das Wilkens, who just happens to be the reigning Miss Georgia.
Thanks for coming in.
No problem.
It's a pleasure to be here.
Now, you're not just wearing that crown just to make a personal appearance here, you have a very personal reason.
Watch that girl single-A game.
Yes.
My little sister, Holly Wilkins.
She plays for Wesleyan number 32.
This is actually her fourth state title that she's won.
So it's pretty amazing.
What's it like as a miss Georgia to watch your sister win a fourth or.
Well, she's won four in a row.
The team has won five in a row.
I know.
It's incredible.
You know, they just sweep every time they come out.
Them two, They're an amazing team.
So it's been really great.
Now you're saying all these nice things about her and look who's sitting down beside us now.
None other than Holly Wilkins.
They're going to get her all mixed up there.
We can talk to her.
Holly, your sister, Jasmine, she's so proud of you.
How proud are you of her being Miss Georgia?
I'm so proud of her.
Like, I don't know, like, when she won, I was, like, the first person jumping up and down.
I was like, That's my sister.
But, like, I know I'm really proud of her.
And just, like, she worked really hard for this.
Talk a little bit about winning the state championship today and what's that mean in your senior year?
I mean, it obviously feels great, like to go all four years in a row like and it's something that I think the team really, like invested in.
And I know like this year especially everybody like really wanted to do it for us, for seniors because like, we're just so close this year and it's really a team thing.
Like every single person is like a big part of this team and like the heart of this team, like, can't be really put in one person.
Now, Jazz, your dad is Gerald Wilkins, who played in the NBA.
What's he think about all this?
What do you think about all the success in the family?
He thought he was the big dog being an NBA player.
He's just overwhelmed with happiness, you know, seeing how successful his kids have been.
And we have a brother, Damian, who's playing in the NBA right now, too.
So he's really happy and so is our mom.
I'm sure she's up there crying.
Yeah.
It's been a big year for your family.
Yeah, it's a very big year.
It's it's great.
Tell us a little bit about as you're playing today and you're going to go on to college next year.
yeah.
Well, next year I'm going to play at Furman.
And so I spoke on and I mean, it really came down to like which school really, like, fit me all the way around, like school sports and everything.
And like, especially the coaching staff.
I love all of them and I feel like I could really be a part of like their family there.
And I know Coach Carson is like just building this new team and like, they've done better.
Like every season she's been there and so I'm just really excited to be a part of it.
Jaz What's the best part of being Miss Georgia?
The best part of it's hard to just pinpoint one thing.
You know, I've loved being able to go to all the hospitals and visit all of the kids.
Actually just went to Eggleston yesterday and spoke to a ton of the kids at the oncology ward.
So I mean, it's very rewarding.
Every day offer something new.
And I had off to Miss USA in June, so I'm very excited.
Well, you know, I'm very excited too, because I don't think anybody's ever interviewed a miss Georgia, you know, four times State champions, the same special day for the Wilkins.
You know, congratulations.
The Wilkins family and both of you, good luck next year.
Thank you so much.
All right.
Time now to check in with Jacqui, who has more for us.
