He's coming in.
It's a slam jam to pull up from three to watch this guy go wheel drive back to the end.
He gets it.
Good morning and welcome from Macon, Georgia.
The central place and the first of six games today on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
I'm Bob housing along with Georgia great DJ Shack me it's my pleasure to be here with the game between southwest Atlantic Christian and the Knights of Saint Francis and D.J.
when we saw the games, I thought we had one of the most competitive games of the whole six of the whole 14 games.
Absolutely.
I can't wait to get this game going to great teams, great opponents going to get ready for our great state championship game.
And let's meet a couple of the players first for the visiting team.
Miss Daniels.
Yes.
Marquita Daniels.
For starters, a lot of Christian has done an outstanding job this postseason, averaging almost 21 points a game four steals.
If she could shoot the deep ball 731 on the year.
And for Saint Francis, it's Nettie Antoinette Brown.
Absolutely.
Antoinette Brown is their key player.
She has to be on the court for them today.
She averages 14 points a game and she's a person who has to be on the court if they want to be successful and get a win in the state championship game today.
And we have a much prettier third member of our team.
Let's go to Raven for her thoughts from the sideline.
Oh, you're far too kind, guys.
This is a game with a lot of history.
These two teams, this is the sixth time they've met in the past two years.
Southwest Atlanta Christian took over most of the regular season wins, but it was in the region championship that Saint Francis won the last victory.
I was talking to Coach Kennedy of Saint Francis earlier and I asked her, how do you keep your girls focused and not harp on all the past loss or victories throughout the season?
She goes none of that.
It just doesn't matter.
She goes, We have to focus on what's in front of us right now.
She goes, Take last year, for example.
We beat them by 30 at one point and then they came back and knocked us out of the playoffs.
She goes, So none of the other stuff and matters.
We just need to take care of our business right here on the court tonight.
So it's definitely going to be a matchup that doesn't disappoint guys.
Thank you very much, Raven.
We'll be hearing from you throughout the broadcast.
Now let's see the starting lineup brought to you by Regions Bank.
Four big players, forwards and centers and only one guard.
Tell us about the starting lineup.
PJ has some of what you see there.
They have three forwards guarding.
They're all about size, they're all about getting good get movement on the inside.
So they want to control the game from the inside out.
And for the home team again brought to you by Regions Bank, the St Francis night just the opposite three guards and two and actually all five of their players are almost guards, but they're identified as three guards and two forwards.
Absolutely.
You can tell the difference there.
They want to get on the run, they want to push the tempo, they want to make sure they're getting out, running, getting some early baskets from up front and early.
Now, that's not unusual to think when they played six times the keys to success.
Very similar technical college at Georgia Keys to the game for Southwest Atlanta Christian Absolutely.
First time is going to be critical to southwest.
Atlanta has outscored their opponents 72 to 16 in the first quarter, all about getting the pass early start and also controlling nerves.
Their interstate state championship game.
Again, they want to revenge the loss they had against Saint Francis.
So they got to control the nerves to get that win.
Very similar home keys for the home team again Technical college of Georgia brings you these keys to the game for the Saint Francis Knights.
Absolutely.
It's going to be the same as is no typo there.
They got to control.
They've got to weather the storm of Southwest early and getting that possession going to control it nerves as well not being overconfident in this game just because they beat them.
Last last year, Southwest Atlanta Christian made it to the state championship, wasn't quite their time.
They ran into Wesleyan.
Now, this year, Coach Cowan is very confident that this is their year now for coaching experience.
Their coach at Antonio Saint Francis, she played in the 1998 World championship team.
So they're going to have to go with her spirit and energy.
We're ready to start.
We'll get this game in her way and you can give me your thoughts after that.
Tip Control by the Knights.
Absolutely.
How you see early, they want to get out and run.
They get to tip early the ball up and we'll see how it all plays out here in this first possession.
That's Candice Williams passing the ball around and and to the other guard there, Davis, They actually have two girls who play point guard.
And as I said, they're really almost all five of them are guards the way they play.
Yeah, they like to get out and run.
That's one thing you're going to see early is the different matchup they have with the four guys on the court.
Another thing about Southwest, Atlanta, Christian, they will change defenses.
Right now, they're trying to play some man to man and but you'll see them in about pressing all over the court.
And that half court press is very dangerous.
But right now.
So the Knights are taking a long time.
They haven't even taken a shot.
We've played 40 seconds.
Well, it's about being patient.
They've got to be patient to make sure they're getting a good, good shot off.
And you get the steal.
You come back.
Now, the other way, they're going to throw the ball down the court off to the side.
It goes in.
There's the three.
And that's the key to that.
One of the keys of the game was Marquita Daniels last week.
She hit her first for three.
She scored the first 12 points in their game to get them to the state championship.
And she starts right where she did last week, three to nothing.
Those same, for instance, as it turned out with Martina Daniels.
You know, it may be a long morning now they're still on the ball is going to come back and on the floor and control by the Warriors down the court they come It's Daniels with the ball trying to go behind her back and she's tied up.
And let's see a replay of that three point shot from the corner.
And you kind of look like it was a throw away, but it all worked out for them.
Great steal right there by Christian Carter coming along.
She's looking for the ball and maybe she was going to market it She gets a few said knocks down the big three now the inbounds pass and a three pointer from the other side This one right down by Amber Brown.
It's now six to nothing.
And we said the first five matches can be important.
Let's see what happens.
Yet another steal and this is what song was like.
This was all about it.
But starting fires and you see how they got to put three.
Now they've got another turnover.
They're doing exactly what they want to do here in the first ball.
They go down low and the basket goes in there, gets a call.
This time out, Alexander Turner made having hits and three possessions in three points and it leading eight to nothing.
Let's meet the officials now for this first game today, Jeff McNichols, Corey Taylor and Dee Davis.
And it's you know, it's quite an honor to continue to be picked to be the referee for these games as well, too.
Absolutely.
It's kind of similar to any other sports.
You got to do well throughout the whole year and you get a chance to call one of the biggest games of the year in the state championship.
So these guys should be evaluated on what they've done all year long.
So putting together the keys to the game that you brought up in our pre game, the first couple of minutes was going to be very important because they have jumped.
Thursday, the coach for Aisha Kennedy, she played four wheeler, won a state championship in 1998.
And I'm going to have to depend on that right now.
But what does Saint Francis have to do now to stem this eight to nothing run to start the game?
Well, they got they got to do what he did in the first possession, try to slow it down a little bit, make sure they're not they have two turnovers already and that's just got an eight point lead already.
So they got to make sure they stay on the control control.
And I think that's why Coach Kennedy got that time out to calm the girls down and say, hey, it's all did so in the first quarter.
We're going to be all right.
We got to take care of the basket.
There's Jackie count on the sideline.
She was here last year playing for a state championship.
So she's had some experience.
She was the assistant coach on the 2006 state championship team.
Now the ball is in batted against the full court pressure of southwest Atlanta Christian Academy.
This one Southwest thrives on.
They thrive on put pressure on you and you see the full throttle.
Once you get past it, you can do things like that and get a bucket and get more.
Maybe that's the kind of momentum they need to get going early.
And pressure is being put on now by Saint Francis as well.
That's their leading scorer, Nettie Brown, scoring for Francis, making it 8 to 2 while stolen away by Saint Francis.
On the young lady bringing it up now Nigella Green.
She's a division one track signee to Miami.
Coming back to ACL you've had that we're going to talk about that later.
Just what hap what happens to an athlete?
All right.
When you're eight games back, are you healthy now?
She scored 16 points in the last game right.
What is the thing when you have an ACL?
Are you conscious of it for a long time?
Well, you know, I think the physical part of it, all of that comes you have a lot of rehab.
But I think the biggest part of having an ACL in just a mental part of the game, understanding that you can make those cuts, you can make those drives and take it to the basket and not worry about your knee not giving out on a nice dish bright green, and she finds a person underneath to make it eight two for us All four points by Nettie Brown.
They seem to have weathered the storm here.
D.J.
That's exactly what we talked about.
The teams they have to do well, as always, go on the Southwest.
Now, the drive for the basket lays up short rebound control by Saint Francis.
We play 3 minutes, 8 to 4.
The Warriors driving to their lane is Williams and she loses the ball out of bounds.
Both teams pressure defense 11 steals a game by Saint Francis 18 steals for the Warriors and now coach Kennedy took a timeout As we said earlier, Coach Kennedy is in her fourth year here.
And one of things you'll notice, T.J., she never sits down.
Now, that's might not be too unusual.
They don't even have a chair for her.
Wow.
She so she she can't sit down if she wants to.
So at least the players know she is always watch it.
Well, everybody's sitting down as bad as she's going to be.
They're looking at I asked her about it because I watched her game last week in the semifinal.
She says, I think that I can generate energy to my team by standing up.
And that's right, you guys, that that's awesome because they're going to need it.
Looks like that timeout you took earlier was good for them.
Now they're on their own for a run.
And both teams, even if they've been a little nervous, they're not sure where they're shooting.
Southwest Atlanta, three for four, Saint Francis, two for two.
Full court pressure by Saint Francis, broken by Daniels.
Now she drives to the basket, loses control of it.
It's picked up by the Knights.
It's going to turn around Now, since the timeout, it's like Southwest has been the team that's turning the ball over now and Saint Francis has calmed down a little bit.
That's Candice Williams with the ball.
They alternate who is sharing the point between de Thomas and her and here's green with the ball.
They're a different team when she's in the game as well three pointer up Mildred's rebound controlled and blocked here from the Williams great block down inside She just went straight up with it didn't go into the body so she made a good move on and was able to get the block on it and get the ball back For southwest Atlanta.
That's Amber Brown with the ball as she hands to Alexis Carter.
She takes the jumper and hits it nice mid-range jumper there.
Both teams showing the ability to put the ball in the basket, scoring 14 points in that first 4 minutes and a nice diversified scoring as well.
Yeah, absolutely.
And one good thing that's always a lot of Christian doing it.
They're moving the ball really well on offense.
They're doing what they have to do to find the open shot and get the ball up and that's why they up ten four right now safe.
Let's take 4 minutes, nine to seconds to play in the first half, 10 to 4 southwest Atlanta.
And we'll be back after this.
Time out.
Now.
And we're back here.
4 minutes, 20 seconds to play.
Southwest Atlanta scored the first eight points.
Now they've settled down to a 10 to 14, a turnover, six important national lead for two to decide for us.
And they're turning the ball over as it's contributing to the points right now.
So whoever turned the ball over the least going into this in this first quarter should become really well How much you think it matters at Southwest Atlanta?
Christian was here last year.
I think it matters a lot.
I mean, they've been here like we talked about, controlling the nerves.
They understand what it takes to be in this type of game, to control your nerves and not get too high or too low.
So being in this game definitely helps them.
You saw the green shoelaces as we came out.
They have very special meaning.
We will tell you more about them later.
But now we're back in the play.
And as Saint Francis noted, the ball trailing by half a dozen, half court pressure.
And this can be very dangerous stopping right short of that line.
But they throw it into the French court and the loose ball is picked up by Saint Francis, drives and lays it in.
She's got all six points.
Great drive.
They're using the left hand, take it to the basket after almost turning it over.
Here's Daniels throwing up a three and hitting it.
So like she did last week, she's hitting from long range.
That's her second three pointer.
Yeah 13 to 6.
We're talking about hitting 31 threes this year.
She's had these playoffs.
She's had averaged 21 points a game.
That's Davis missing there for the easy rebound in basket is Nettie Brown eight points for Brown full court pressure by the Knights southwesterly and the ball's dropped dropping by Martina Daniels and picked up loosely there there really was a turnover Gordon a steal sometimes just falls to your left there by Pierce Green dribbling with the ball They really like I say, have four or five guards that they that they depend on out there Green at the top of the circle drives to the lane and she's fouled as she goes to the basket calls and Carter there's two Carter's and Christian Carter making the foul Great job of this year right there attacking the basket making them collapse on you and they be kicking it out and getting the foul So great job of her penetrating and making something happen.
And they're ruling that she was not in the active shooting.
She was going to the basket but fouled before she put it up.
So to be outside out in bounds, it comes driving to the lane and trying to dish it out.
But the ball's taken away by Saint Francis, by the Warriors.
They come the other way.
And Daniels puts it up and in and she's fouled.
So forget she's had two three pointers from the long range now the middle of the coming now she's going to do it the old fashioned way old fashioned in one.
I mean, that's just great.
Body control's a great pass great outlet pass here to get it out front leader a little bit if she catches up to it and just look at that body control going up, being able to control herself and getting in the basket, that's awesome and great.
Pick up the lead.
She looked like a quarterback threat leading the receiver there.
Oh, she she may have a little future there.
The key and that is now to throw it where they are but where they're going to I believe and she did it and we are quarterback one day.
I wish I said you sound like I wish I was too slow just to smile on a whole bunch of 2 minutes, three point shot or effort to get the three pointer through the free throw.
She's got nine points and it's now 16 to 8 half court pressure Williams with the ball she'll cross the time line with a passive that time with the pressure to Davis that's right back to Williams Williams looking for somebody to cut now she dribbles it back out now they're going a little bit slower offense that you said is better for them to play it does a good job of them being patient on that process.
People think you got to rush it, but you just find open lane it will eventually open up and being patient go in and get the shot they want.
It is still a successful physical drive into the lane, shoring up the left handed shot and having it go in.
Oh, Alexis Carter, she has six points now.
It's a ten point lead, 18 to 8, again, what I would call passive half court pressure.
This time, Green dribbles the ball slowly into the front court.
The Southwest wants to get a position where they can trap, but until then, they would just, you know, kind of just give them a little pressure and not give up the big play.
Williams And Green playing a two person game right now and Williams throws it away.
Here come the Warriors driving all the way to the hoop and kind of stumbled on her own feet there rebound the Greens have a great chance and southwest air to get up even more with the turnover Here's green driving the lane this time she will go to the lane and shoot too.
We'll see a replay here at the last basket for the Warriors.
Just a great four straight one on one here.
Just taking her off the dribble, using using the sideline as her as a judge of this game ball up on high off the rim getting two shots on both teams substituting quite a bit here in the early going and green misses her first shot Two more coming in right now but a steady flow in and out trying to find the right combination of three.
Absolutely.
One good thing about Saint Francis is they like to get to the free throw line.
And at last three they were 21 of 22 from the free throw line.
So these free throws are very important, especially being down by ten early in this game.
Missed the first makes the second catch the lead to 918 to 9.
They also like to shoot the three pointer about 50% more threes than Southwest, but they haven't taken one yet and Southwest has hit a couple of them already.
They have a minute and a half to play into the high post.
It goes sweeping work.
It doesn't go in the ball on the floor and control by Southwest winning the ball to get to those loose balls.
Absolutely one three barely touches the rim and goes out of bounds.
Now, you got to tell Southwest Atlanta Christian is definitely the team that's a little bit more aggressive.
They're going after loose balls, they're on the floor, they're attacking the basket and they're shooting the three ball well with no problem.
So everything is going right for them right now.
And again, turnovers and again, good shots at the basket.
I think Coach Cowan, even though she looks like she's behind, I think she's going to be happy with the way the first 5 minutes that we saw was a key to the game was, you know, one of the things is they've had some big leads that they've let get away this year.
We'll talk a little bit more as the game goes on.
In fact, they lost one of the games at the Saint Francis where they had a double digit lead.
And you think they don't remember that?
No, they remember that green to the basket lays it up and in great take by the there and she's starting to show why she's a division one signee to beat Miami University of Miami Daniels dribbling the ball stumbles a little bit near the front of the time line into the middle, back up and inside out takes the three and the ball is controlled by Saint Francis.
Half a minute to play Alpha one shot regulator.
Chris is still getting good shots in the basket and nothing but heir Abby Grant has.
There's the league for the pass down to the Abby Grant is taken is made rather 90 93. shots this year that's more than the Warriors have as a team 9999.
So she is going to put it up when she can.
The first one that didn't have exactly the desired effect, but it's anything like I saw last week that won't affect her is definitely that deep three shooting three ball well and what they say about a shooter's mentality they keep shooting If you have a teammate like you, I know you want a shooter like that.
Oh, no, no.
I was a mid range gal and three point line was not my friend.
Final 5 seconds of the first quarter three and driving to the hoop lays it up McCollum charged through that was a great take is a great tasting we could see a replay I still say that's the toughest call for a referee to make as she looks like she got there and tosses, Patterson said.
We played 8 minutes of high school basketball, all of southwest Atlanta, leading Saint Francis 18 to 11.
There's your coach, Jackie Collins.
She's got to be happy.
It's how the game started with a three from the corner and it just kind of stayed that way.
You see in the middle going for another one.
We'll be back with the second quarter with southwest Atlanta leading Saint Francis 18th 11 towns with fouls, second quarter about to get underway.
Southwest Atlantic Christian Warriors leading the Knights of Saint Francis, 18 to 11.
Let's take a trip around our great state of Georgia.
And George, a traveler from the mountains to the coast, our traveling theme team explores the state's most beautiful and exciting, unique treasures.
Don't miss Georgia.
Travel around the great GPB.
They just sit in our pregame show.
You saw David Belsky at the Hall of Fame right next door here.
And everybody wants to get in the act.
He wants to be a play by play announcer.
He did that great state room slide that David tells me he wants to be in everything.
A fantastic guy to watch.
He's been hosting the show today for nearly ten years now.
We better hang out.
He wants to take our job.
Wow.
He's going to be careful.
His second quarter about to get in the way.
Martin Daniels had another first great first quarter.
Absolutely.
She was definitely the key for Southwest.
A lot of Christian in that first quarter, getting to the basket, shooting the three ball reason why she's got it inbounds play.
Did they start the second half it's senior second quarter Saint Francis with the ball trailing by seven a point that charge had gone the other way.
That would have been a big three point play to end the first quarter.
Absolutely.
It will look as bad as the, you know, the scores have.
But to get that, it would have been awesome for Saint Francis.
That's Kristine Williams kind of controlling the pace a lot more than her partner.
Jay Davis right now hands the ball to green screen takes the shot up an airball but the rebound by David back out to Williams out on the flank to Grant Williams holding the ball same way the first half starting the first quarter started with a nice deliberate set up on their offense.
They impatient they have to be patient on offense.
I think they want to sell this game back and they know that he's some of the latter person can score the ball at will and try to call him that.
Did they know the turnover?
They need points every time they go down to Millsap.
With Leonard going to schools and baskets, there are some stats up there.
Southwest, both teams shooting very well, seven for 12 for the Warriors, five for 11, but lots of turnover, lots of turnovers.
Area had ten turnovers total for both teams in that first quarter.
You got to limit battle This game could got a handful one way out on the left side driving to the hoop putting it up and in and Grant has to get off the baseline there She has used the baseline as another out there.
She let it get to the baseline and made it easier for her to get to the rim.
That was the baby sister Kristen Carter hitting and her older sisters had a good start, but that's her first two points and eight rebounds.
Comes down to Daniels and she'll bring the ball up quickly right into the hole.
Well, underneath they tried to go looking for the pass underneath and city one played too many.
She looked like she could have taken it to the hoop herself.
Yeah, but this this is a very active offensive team for Southwest Los.
As they move the ball well, they drive, they attack.
That's one thing that Saint Francis has to worry about is them getting to the basket more frequently.
Fifth turnover, the game for Southwest.
Still not across the timeline.
Now they are driving to the hoop driving and no good rebound control by the Warriors Carter out to the ball quickly bringing the ball up herself shooting a little bit of a wild shot now here's Williams with the ball double teamed at half court that's what they like to do now somebody should be open.
Nifty move right there.
Nifty move right there by Candice Williams to break that trap and find open man and get the shot off.
Great job there.
Her fellow guard, Jay Davis, gets her first two points.
And when you press that half court, sometimes that opens up like that.
So, Lola, you get a chance to get out there.
That's what just exactly what happened.
20 to 13 Saint Francis has led since that first eight points in the game, continuing to control.
There's another two points, this great pass.
It's a great pass by that Mama Brown getting it inside and another free shot.
Amy Griffin has that sweeping hook.
If she doesn't have a three.
No it's the first to accurate Woodruff there's the half court pressure should leave somebody in the side again.
Let's see what happens with Williams driving down low.
There's a sweeper hook the other way no good and knocked out of bounds by now.
We're going to get to see the the the opposite of a skyhook.
You got to go for the need for this partner.
Split the double team.
Their eyes still up the open.
Jay Davis hits it for two.
That's just great ball movement there Now the inbounds underneath and had a man wide open and somebody fell asleep right there Kristen Williams wide open an eight.
That's her first two points of the game.
So the guard snuck underneath with a big tall night.
Saint Francis calls off their full court pressure and that did not seem to bother the Warriors much at all.
There's Daniels driving, taking the shot and hitting.
She's a player.
Wow.
She's a player.
I mean, she showed every everything she's over three.
She showed that she can drive the ball and there she is, taking in off the dribble, pulling up for the jumper mid range, nice looking shot, 11 points.
She's averaging nearly 20 in the playoffs after averaging right around ten in the regular season.
Well, she's definitely on the mark.
She's on the way.
Williams hands the ball off and they circle around and she carries the ball over and then we're going to get to see Ms.. Daniels in action here.
I mean, look at this.
Just this is one on one.
This is too long.
She has her business.
This pulls up on the control.
The thing I like about her, she has great body control.
When she's going to the rim, well, she's pulling up.
She never feels like she's out of place for four and a half minutes to go.
In the first half, 24 to 15 Southwest Atlanta Christian leaning.
We'll be back with the last 4 minutes after this timeout.
Both teams shooting the ball pretty well here.
A lot of points being scored.
This is almost as many points in the half as there's a couple of their games headed in their whole game.
So the pace is pretty frantic.
Absolutely.
And that's one thing that you like to see.
These these girls are getting up high percentage shots.
They're getting good shots.
They drive into the lane, they're pulling up.
They're having good range at the shot, at the goal.
So this is a great run to join this GPB sports, Janet, GPB Dawgs sports guys I'm Bill overall and the folks at New Media GPB have done a great job.
You can watch it at that time.
You can go to that.
You can go to it on Twitter.
We're going to get a chance later on to talk.
We know there's some there's the Facebook way to go as well.
So if you're on Twitter, you are on Twitter.
I am on Twitter.
Oh, like I don't.
I don't.
And I'm on Facebook as well.
There it is.
How do you get to it that way?
I don't tweet a lot, but I do go to it.
A lot of people want to hear from you.
You got a tweet or more.
You got to tell them what's going on.
I do want to say at GPB that, you know, there's some people listening in North Carolina that know all about those green shoelaces that we're going to talk a little bit about later, that Coach AG Crockett, he's one of the assistant coaches.
His daughter Kate, died of cancer last fall and his green jersey, those green shoes that you're seeing there are dedicated to her because green is the color of blood cancer.
Her name is also on their shoes.
That's awesome.
That's a that's a good detail.
So the folks in North Carolina for thinking of your own for all comes in selfless Christian is tied up in falls and gets a great job in Saint Francis right there is so much other Christian has gotten the ball inside three or four times now and what they did this time, they came out and they fronted her and had someone on the backside so they could not get that easy access down.
Low falls on Mandy Griffin.
And I think that's her second.
Again, the mild pressure looks like they're on a man to man this time, but they're picking up all over the court.
So it's a little hard to talk to Davis drives through the Leonard and comes back out, gets in her need and up in after center shot.
That's a great job for her right away inside tonight Brown It's going to key to the game.
She has to be more productive down there like she's doing now.
Ten points, 3 minutes and 45 seconds to go.
Seven point difference.
The eight point lead to start the game, the eight straight points.
It's kind of stayed that way for most of the rest of the half, three and a half minutes to play ball stolen away by green one on three.
But she's going undetected or undetermined, rather, and she misses the layup there.
You should have pulled that one out.
Yeah.
Yeah.
She you know, she had one or two there so she had a chance at it.
But that's what happens.
You got a great return there.
So I was allowed to get some school right back.
Alexis Carter there.
Alexis Carter scores.
She's four for four in this quarter and she's got double figures for them.
Top of the key.
That's Trimble now, the three pointer on the way and good and oh, you have the most common atmosphere and she's got 99 hits her 103 pointer of the season first basket of the game and looks really good going up to and that was a rainbow one for sure 26 to 20 ball underneath miscues that rebound doesn't go on a standing rebound Sandy got another great backdoor pass big time down the floor they're down six but need another quality shot on this possession to cut this lead to four.
There is the three again that's not going to add anything so she's either Swisher Here comes Daniels.
So let's get good as bad team and she's fouled as she goes to the hoop.
D.J.
you're down there the ball will go to replay here just a second.
There it is.
There's a three.
This ball's going up regardless of who was coming to commit to it.
This is a great job of kicking it back down by Anthony Brown and hitting that shot by Abby Grant.
That's nice that just snap.
Now, you say you didn't hear that much because you weren't the outside shooter.
I also I was a driver.
I like to drive and dish and midrange guy, but I think he's more like a Steve Nash coming off of a pick or something like that.
Huh?
You played for sports in high school.
I did.
And I wish more kids were still doing that.
Daniels, who's got 12 points, misses the second one.
So she made the first and again, seven point lead now to rebound control back up to nine.
There's a three point play the old fashioned way.
Saint Francis had a chance to cut it to less than five and all of a sudden it's back to nine and pretty important time down the floor for them.
Let's just tell you how fast more money can change.
Driving little after missing rebound control by the Warriors looking to run with the ball.
They get in the hands of Daniels and she pulls up for the three just short rebound control by green pace is frantic going to end the action here green with the ball taking it to the hoop drops it off nice dish and this is tied the game is safe for instance like they like to get up and run.
We talked about having four guards and of course they like to get out and run and that's what happened.
You get the green driving it to the basket again.
Forces out.
There's a lot room to make a play and she takes it in.
This is an easy basket, maybe Brown with ten points now the lead all scorers for Saint Francis that's Carter Now they pull the ball out with a minute and a half to go in there.
BROWN Oh, no shot clock in high school, right?
Basketball.
They could pretty much hold it the whole time they want it.
And that's the other counter shooting the ball missing, rebound on the floor.
The grant Here comes Williams then warriors are back very quick on defense That could've been a walk There's Chris he has the ball picked away but she was fouled.
Oh okay.
We're going to see the last basket by Amber Brown to get to a ten points.
You see when she drives she she attracts three players into the paint and nobody is on the back side waiting for one to make brown.
There's a great drive and dish by magic 3 minutes, 6 seconds to play Saint Francis hanging around down seven.
A little bit of a delay here.
You know, Amber Brown is our excuse me.
Antoinette Brown is left handed.
I think sometimes there's a real advantage in being left handed.
You're just naturally look for that right handed shot and all of a sudden she's throwing it up and getting wide open as as thumbs up.
Gold Star statistician Mr. Kevin Barnes, he happens to be left handed and he's also one of the best Statman around.
When I saw him come in the gym, I knew I was getting a lot of help.
I had you on my right here on the left.
Nice pass underneath the Davis.
She picks it up and throws it in her second basket.
Saint Francis is finding something every time he drives.
They're always attracting a lot of people and it's easy to get the dish, so they have to keep that in mind.
Let's go on to the second half.
What's working?
Poor guy can hold to the last shot if they want 33 seconds to play in the quarter.
That's up to right now.
I think they're going to hold it out and take the last shot and I don't think they will.
So crazy begins to get this get the momentum going into halftime.
Feeling good about yourself in the lane it goes.
Turn around jumper.
Good.
Nice move.
Very nice move Alexis Curry she now has ten points less than 10 seconds to play Williams with the ball needs to make a run if she's going to here 5 seconds to play pulls up takes the jumper short followed loose on the floor We played 24 minutes of that or 16 minutes of high school basketball.
Southwest Atlanta, Christian leading 31 to 24.
Last second thoughts before we go to break here, great first half, both teams, the five, both team to move up down to quarter game could be with their five points or less.
But Southwest Atlanta just won not let them back in.
So look forward to the second half.
We've got Raven with coach count coach great score on the scoreboard but you know it's going to be a hard fought, tough battle going in that second half.
What do you need your girls to do, contain control going into the second half?
The first thing we've got to do is get more rebounds on the defensive, man.
We've given up way too many offensive rebounds.
That's something that we work on continuously and it seems to be a challenge.
So that's the first thing is the offensive rebound.
The second thing is we've got to stop the penetration, the penetration is killing us right now.
So at halftime we've got to discuss those two things, make those adjustments and come out in the second half and do a much better job.
All right, Coach, preach it.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Back to you, Mark.
Hey, thanks so much, Raven.
Coming up on the half now, we will talk to both.
Principals will also have first half stats and first half highlights.
They're watching the GHC Boys and girls basketball champions live from the Macon Coliseum live on TV.
We're at the half 3124 southwest Atlanta Christian is leading Game one.
Stay with us.
We're back after this.
You see we're live at the mega coliseum.
We are at halftime of the first of six big games here on GPB.
Lots of excitement here in the field, in the stadium.
And we're going to welcome to the program.
Now the principal of Saint or the athletic director of Saint Francis High School, Chad McConnell.
Thanks for coming on with us.
Thanks for having me.
Talk a little bit about what's going on at your high school because you've got the girls team in the finals and you've got the boys team in the finals.
Yeah, it's been a nice run for our for our guys and girls.
They've both done a tremendous job this year, overcoming odds and, you know, bringing that next man up as we've kind of taken our motto to be because we've had injuries and and illnesses and things like that that made different people have to step up.
And that's been a great thing for these kids to be able to do that.
It's been exciting for our our fan base.
They've really gotten behind it and it's a neat experience for us.
What was it like in the hallways of the classrooms this week?
Because you got both teams playing?
You know what?
We were actually out of school this week for for for winter break.
So we didn't that excitement in the classroom but it sure was exciting last last Friday when we were at Kennesaw State for the Final Four, we had a big turnout there before people went on break.
We had a lot of our kids that have come back off a break just to be here early for this.
So it's been been nice.
You know, these two good teams in the finals, you guys have played each other a few times.
This is the second time or the third time.
Excuse me.
We played we split both times.
We were actually down really big in our region tournament and came back and beat them in the second half.
You know, we're not the only two good teams in that region.
You know, the public champion, Gordon Lee, is also from our region.
So we had a really tough region this year, but a lot of fun to watch that basketball.
All right.
It's time to play.
Are you smarter than your students?
A question from earlier today in Georgia History Project.
So your question is Cheryl Hayworth became a national champion and Olympic medalist while still a teenager.
What sport did she set?
Five American records on her way to a bronze medal in the 2000 Olympic Games.
Was that A, curling B, rhythmic gymnastics, C, synchronized swimming or D, weightlifting?
I'm going to go with G, Right.
You you've got it right.
Well, listen, good luck today.
You got a big day there for the.
Thank you.

And we now welcome to the program.
Geraldine Thompson, the head of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy.
Thanks for coming on with us.
And talk a little, though, about the vibe was like at school this week as everybody's fired up about this big game.
Oh, of course, everybody was talking about basketball this week.
We don't stop that because that's the main sport that we have at the school.
And all of the children have the opportunity to participate in whatever way they choose.
But I have to give the approval talk a little, not what a what Southwest Christian Academy is all about.
Well, we want to make sure that the children understand what life requires.
So we don't just talk about Christianity.
Even though we are Christians.
We want them to understand where they need to go to get information within school, within the church, and probably in their community as well.
All right.
Well, let's play a game that we call Are you Smarter than your student?
And the question from our today in Georgia History project, How can a Thrashers arrive in Atlanta on June 25th, 1997?
They were the second hockey team brought to the city, and then they were relocated to Canada.
What was the main reason for the Thrashers move?
Was it a scheduled migration?
B, bird flu, C, financial problems or D, an escape?
The Vietnam War?
I don't know.
What do you say?
Well, we're going to go with C financial problems because they had a bundle level.
That's well, I'm sure that's a problem.
Well, thanks so much for coming on.
It's my pleasure.
Second half a thank you.
Thank you.
It's a pleasure meeting you.
All right.
What do I do with the town?
Well, you just hang on to that towel because you might need it later to get that.
Oh, she said hold on.

It's now time for our career play of the Game, presented by the technical college system of Georgia.
You know, not every career keeps you cooped up in an office all day long.
Fields like agriculture, wildlife management and forestry are perfect for anyone who loves the great outdoors.
And agribusiness is the oldest industry in the state.
It's still economically vital, but today's agriculture careers require training and skills.
Forestry is another outdoor career that's moving into the 21st century.
New harvesting techniques require professional training as well, and careers are waiting for anyone who's willing to go out and get to work.
That's why working in the great outdoors is our career play of the game and that information brought to you again by the technical college system of Georgia.
Just visit, Teach SG dot edu for more information.
All right.
How many likes do we have over there on Facebook live?
Great.
All we're doing really well.
We're trying to get to 5000 now, so we need everybody to help us out.
All right.
Like us on Facebook.
And you don't like the second half because it's coming up next, the final 16 minutes of the girls single-A private school championship game is coming up live from the Coliseum live on GPB.
It's up after this timeout.
Zach managed to get his team in the 31 to 24 is our half time scorer.
Raven is down with Coach Kennedy.
I saw you talking intently with your coaches in the circle over there.
Can you give us some insight inside of what you were talking about, trying to figure out how we can stop Carter in the middle?
You know, she she's doing phenomenal.
And I feel like when she gets the ball in the paint, it's a bucket.
So we're just going to work hard and try to defend her, see if we can double down on her.
But, you know, we got our defense.
Our defense gets us going.
Our bread and butter is the man to man all year.
So we've really been focusing on, you know, what we need to change in our defense.
Thanks, coach.
You have them right back to you guys.
We'll look at the highlights quickly here.
Again, to the basket early.
That's what they say.
Frenzy did really well, getting to the back of the basket and also dish early.
And here's Alexis Carter right there that she talked about getting inside the paint, making the basket.
No, no.
This I saw was what was kitchen doing is just good job getting some good shots and open looks at threes early and just getting inside.
And that girl right there, McCue Daniels, has had a great first half.
And here we go with the stats.
Good shooting on both sides.
You can see Atlanta Christian over 50% almost daily, almost 50% for Saint Francis hit three point field goals that Saint Francis got a 50% advantage during the regular season but they're not making them so far.
Not much happening with free throws, rebounds and turnovers pretty even.
And that's the biggest thing there.
Turnovers, you know, I know both teams want to cut down on turnovers, get turnovers, lead to easy baskets and that's one thing that I know Saint Francis cannot afford to give up is any more turnovers and get free baskets back to South Carolina.
Christian there's the coach in that.
How about her interview?
It is stunning to start the second half.
I think we're going to do one of the things here but when she up or what here's the road to getting to the state playoffs and that you could see it's been a very easy ride for southwest Atlanta Christian so far winning easily in every game and jumping to big leads, as you mentioned in the first quarter, barring a lot of these games, Devaney scored a lot of points.
Now we go to Saint Francis.
The today they had a little tougher match, but they think they've been convincing very well.
Two of these are brought to you by Georgia EMC.
You could see that they were winning by 20 points again.
So both teams have not very well.
We want to thank our friends at Georgia EMC for giving us the road to the championships.
Now we're ready for the second half.
Southwest Atlanta Christian has a seven point lead.
We'll start with the ball.
What do we need to look for in the first couple of minutes?
We got to manage.
That's the one thing you can't do right there.
So we just talked about both teams having turnover.
We thought about Saint France and limiting their turnovers, but this is the easy way.
We'll say four ends and get back into the game allows was Atlanta with some big time with their sets at Saint Francis with the ball trailing by seven first couple of minutes.
Let's see what they do bring playing a lot more than she did in the earlier games these are lady keeps getting stronger driving the baseline and laying it up and in oh this is the state James today he can hold the evening back.
This is a big time game for her.
She's a senior, so she wants to go out on top.
This is as close as Saint Francis has been since the eight point lead to start the game just underway in the second half.
Hang on, We're going to have a good one down low.
It goes to Carter.
And that's the thing.
They said they got to stop and they didn't do it.
Great job.
Great job.
Down low.
Move the ball, get it down and give gimme easy basket.
She's got a lot of high percentage shots early already.
12 points for the six foot one senior has not declared her college yet.
Derek minds are totally on winning the state championship coach says.
And they will start worrying about that after this game.
Driving to the hoop and leaning in is Christine Williams steering her job and it's going to getting to the basket and I think there is a timeout called here.
We're going to show that just because we're going to see the dish right here for the basket here to set a rhythm.
Well, the top scoring coming, it just takes it all the way to the rack using that.
And on swoop, they like you call it the Sweet 38, they're able to sweep It is working may and now it closes the lead ever 3128 here.
Coach Calloway was not happy at the end of the half.
We were both laughing and saying, Was that the leading coach or the trailing coach, he's less happy now.
Absolutely.
You see, the early time I saw some of that St Francis, they had to start the game.
They called a quick timeout when it went down eight oh and now it's flip flop to half.
Now it looks like Saint Francis team was coming out with a little bit more momentum and a little bit more aggressive.
And turnovers is always a key.
They're pretty even in this talk.
We'll talk about them in just a second.
I think they're about eight eight.
It's 10 to 6 is what we've got here for southwest Atlanta.
Christian turning the ball over more than Saint Francis here, the Warriors with the ball trying to get Daniels back in the game down wall.
It goes outside to Carter taking the jump shot and hitting it.
Now, there's a girl that's been posting up.
Now it's face to face to the basket scoring.
Now you say, Francis, you kind of in all like, what can we do to stop her?
She's doing it.
I mean, even though she's shooting mid range jumpers.
So Francis has not found an answer to Alexis Carter yet.
And that's what the coach was talking about.
And they worked hard on that at halftime, but they have not figured it out.
And that was a new wrinkle, as you said, going to the basket instead of the turnaround.
Now they drive the lanes.
Nettie Brown misses the layup and away comes southwest Atlanta.
Every time they get within 3 to 5 back up, they go to stretch it out to seven back to and we've seen hooker rebound underneath by the other Carter that's no good And now the rebound controlled by Saint Francis Knights Two shots at it right there they had a good chance to get some baskets up and didn't work on screen driving all the way in lays it up and she's fouled though She goes it boy she's controlling the ball a lot more.
Now here's a player that hasn't played all year in that third foul now and Amy Griffin for Southwest Atlanta Christian but they're definitely she is the offense right now even though she hasn't scored as much as some of the other girls.
She's put a lot of pressure on this side with a lot of team right now.
What do you think of this basket?
Several teams do this.
What do you think of not having your players underneath the basket to get the rebound here in the present situation?
Yeah, you just got to thing they got out other plan for that with a make or miss basket there you know maybe they're going to pick up at half court or maybe you're just going to pick up later and now here and assume she's going to make it so that so they can they're really setting up for their defense right now and trying to get a rebound and they can just quickly jump on the press, pick up at half court or whatever.
But and now GREENE misses both her free throws, half court pressure poked away and powerful.
How about these girls?
The way they play when you're down here on the court, you can just see how physical the game is.
Absolutely.
They're playing hard and going and to reason why both teams are in a championship game here, it is just tough defense.
You swipe inside, it's a little body contact.
And I think that's why they got the foul on it.
But you got to love enthusiasm.
You got to love the aggressiveness on both sides and both teams.
She looked like the quarterback for the first down on a short time quarterback sneak there in there before under 6 minutes to play in the third quarter shot by Williams and she is fouled in the back court She's going to get a three point shot and she also gets an Academy Award for that I think she saw it pretty good but they had some contact but absolutely a great cell.
And I think all of us really got it this and Jay, Jay Davis gave her a little bit of luck there and said, come home just like that.
And he's like, Come on, man.
So during the playoffs, Martina Daniels is just lighting them up.
Now she's got 13 points and an academy Award.
She was four or five in that first half for 12 points and in all 16 minutes.
So don't know this factor.
They come out this ball game with it being so close.
Just a second ago it was three points.
Now it's nine points and an important time down for the Knights Green with the ball on the left side.
Now she throws to her back for teammate Williams down low and the ball's intercepted Samad inching pass there she was already fronting She makes pretty good ball at their own mistake right there Pulls up gets that ball loose on the floor and they say it stay with Saint Francis.
Oh she got to do you make a bad pass you got to make up for it as it gets a quick steal.
So that's that's definitely a good thing.
We're going to see the Helter Skelter, the last sequence here right now.
Yeah.
You see, she's already front.
It's going to be a high entry pass and she she gets it out and she's still lurking and she sees a poor pass and gets a steal.
So that's a great move.
And the Helter skelter continues.
This is a turnover on the inbounds pass.
Here come the warriors driving the lane and she jump ball travel and the possession arrow points St Francis.
Little little raggedy right now this is very well play game in spite of the turnovers very well play game but this is the most ragged it's been It has been up and down You know Saint Francis likes to get out and run and I don't think that was man who wants to be that type of running.
And that's why it's kind of been a little on the key here.
But I don't think Southwest a lot of Christian minds playing a little Helter Skelter.
Yeah, I don't think they either.
That's what they all thought.
And they're coming right back with him.
You could tell by his press they like to get up and be aggressive on Tuesday.
This gets the ball down low and she's tied up and back up and it's got to be a jump ball.
Alternate possession was given back to the Knicks, the Warriors.
Great job with breaking the press there.
Great job.
Bring the press.
Had a chance to get an easy basket here and just great looks is Carter getting back great blocks legs low ball it was all about I was going to say what did she do to defend and she was six feet, one against, five for five.
I think that was the difference out of get it every time there's a long rainbow jumper by Daniels.
No good but the loose balls picked up again right now Southwest is getting those loose balls again that they got in the first half to extend the lead.
Absolutely right.
Ball They're definitely getting to the ball a little faster than Saint Francis.
You like that, Jim?
Christian Carter, the sophomore, will play a lot more next year, missing the shot.
And here comes the night driving to the hoop and blocked and fouled.
Matty Brown will go to the line Daniels commits the volunteer second is to see the drive to the basket and the foul Great job by Nati Brown taking it to the basket, not pulling up.
You got a smaller, more heated Daniels Oh, you take it to the rack, get fouled, stop the clock, try to get some easy baskets right here.
1:00, start moving.
They took Candace, Rose said That's actually Nettie Brown in the line making the free throw gets her point number 13 the board and neither team is lit up the scoreboard with their free throw shooting so right and I think right now Saint Francis is under 50% shooting free throws.
But that was an important first one to make cuts the lead to eight.
Yeah they got to have the score to come down to free throws at the end if this game is really close.
So they got to make sure they're able to hit their free throws.
They're at the free throw line.
Minor pressure by Saint Francis, easily broken by the Warriors.
4 minutes to play in the third quarter.
The eight point lead has been fairly consistent most of the game for the Warriors of Southwest Atlanta Christian with the ball way out right now.
They go down low and they were holding it.
It sounds like Chris is content with playing Pace and Paul on offense right now.
I don't think they have to force the issue.
Like you said, they've been up eight pretty much the whole game time.
Saint Francis got it on a knee bay, but they're content with where they're at right now.
3 minutes and 55 seconds of the B.S.
free Southwest Atlanta Christians.
Paul, when we come back, they have the ball and an eight point lead the at there's a cheerleader some Saint Francis 37 to 29.
The two people we featured as the players to watch it lived up to your expectations.
Absolutely.
So we're going to Christian next is Carter.
I mean you heard Coach Kennedy talk about her coming out of second half.
We've got to find a way to stop her.
They say they can try to double down on her.
So they say double down.
She pulls out phases of the basket and shoots at mid range jumper.
So she has definitely been was soaring the side of Saint Francis right now in the air it's been pretty much a two to girl game if we could say that.
Is that Martina Daniels has continued her playoff pace as well on the other side Saint Francis and yet he bounced back doing it all for them, growling on the green.
Absolutely too close to our you know, they wanted to go out on top.
They're both seniors, so they both want to make sure, hey, this is not the last time they listen.
We go out and with him off shooting, he hasn't cooled off much here in the second half.
Yes, I was willing shooting 52% from the floor and Saint Francis at 45%.
So they got to get better.
They want to get a win.
Here Ball comes in back out to Brown Long cross-court pass.
Those are dangerous ones.
Always make a little nervous download the ball's down the ground, but she picks it back up and throws it out and does not hit the rim.
So the first time she had a rough shot there.
There you can see the numbers that you were pretty much talking about, turnovers getting up there in double digits as well, Rebounding pretty even.
I thought that selfless Atlanta Christian would have an advantage on that.
Yeah, absolutely.
And 24 turnovers between the two teams just tell me we talked about it's going to be big is going to be explosive going into the fourth quarter.
He can limit those Brown goes up and in get knocked out of bounds and we'll stay with the saint Francis knights Nice pass by Candice Williams there but southwest quickly covered up and brown trying to run a play off the inbounds and they had a five from timeout called 746 time on their way don't lose position it was Saint Francis you need all the possession you can get there is the coach on the sideline 1998 she played on a state championship team and she quickly pointed out in this building for Wheeler High School.
So she's got to transfer that with it.
And and if you've noticed, she hasn't had a chance to she does not sit down the whole game, doesn't even have a for the Well you know, maybe her championship days can really rub off on this team and you know, give them some words of wisdom right now.
They still got some time left in this game to get back in it, but they got to make a run here sooner than later.
She said that this is not the best talent she's ever had, but it's the best team that she's ever coached.
It's her fourth year there.
We should talk about the comparisons, but what makes a strong program and we get a chance and that they've won 89 games in the last four years.
Coach Kaysen has won.
Cowan, rather, has won 103 games itself with the impression these are dominating programs.
They all they play each other a lot.
They're in the same region with each other and they are two of the strongest programs in the state.
Yeah, he's had six times in the last two years.
So Mac in play and 3 seconds.
All and I think it was against the girl with the ball.
Wow, you don't see that very often.
But I think that's who was in the lane the longest.
So turnover 13th turnover fifth in this quarter he's only played half of it Nice pressure break by southwest Atlanta kitchen and don't teams that pressed a lot break the press usually because they practice it massively when you see it all the time you know where the holes are at the deep end you know you get another style out of the through the middle is always a key and they always end coming to the middle to break that press and looking from one side to the other.
As far as I'm brown her second, she cannot afford to get in foul trouble.
She's the leading scorer for the Knights eight point differential and is spreading it out down low.
They go to Carter and the ball rolls around and drops in and that's a ten point lead.
You know, that's a great job.
Alexia Carter catching it as point and never bringing the ball down where they can, you know, knock it out her hands.
She keeps it high and that's why she's just go straight to the rim with it.
Amber Brown, back to Williams, very important part of the game right now for Saint Francis.
You see they may make a run.
They just need to stay in the game right now.
Absolutely.
Because the star is starting to get away from his lead.
He's got up to ten.
We talked about it being eight through most the whole game now getting up the team.
They came out and have false possessions right here and probably pretty smart.
But they're taking their time getting the ball in their best athletes hands and she lays it in.
That's a great job.
And we just talk about how she gets to the basket.
There's so much pressure on Southwest when she can drive to the basket.
Seven points for Green Hook shot thrown up by Carter.
No good rebound to Saint Francis 220 to play in the third quarter Fumbles the ball but picks it up and doesn't do anything else with it so it's not a turnover back to Williams Williams and green kind of playing a two point person game right now in Green Bay.
They can look at their long winded slide and at least three feet behind you.
I mean that was an NBA three or a WNBA title.
And then we're going to see this one again.
And you tell me what area coach she's in here.
I know she's back in Atlanta, four point record.
That's it.
That's a long way.
That's why I'm sure Miami hurricanes are lacking that right now.
It's what you say inside the three inside the perimeter right there.
It's seven.
Seven.
No guy just learned something new.
Didn't have a five point differential.
Carter pulls up, misses the shot on the floor.
Last touch by by Saint Francis.
And if you're liking what you're seeing here, we need all the help we can get it.

Support games and the great kids and coaches and fans playing, trying to get the ball inbounds and they think they got a timeout.
Did they do?
Yeah, they did.
They did very well.
She was boxed in in the corner and her big time trouble but she got the time out called so was down ten.
We thought the at the boxer was getting wobbly knees and all of a sudden that right we got the other winner a rainbow three.
I just call it a cross country three and all of a sudden we got a five point game.
Saint Francis is definitely found their second win.
We talk about they needed to make a run and guess what?
Their best players are in the game making plays right now as green with back to back baskets driving to the rim and then also pulling out a long range bomb.
Their bomb, they have 155 threes the year and saint in southwest Atlanta Christian had 99 so a 50% difference in the free throw shooting.
And as I think I told you, Miss Grant who hit that rainbow three had more threes as a as one player for Saint Francis in the whole southwest Atlanta Christian team.
Wow.
You also mentioned free throws.
And neither one of these teams, they're both are in the high 50, 60% area, although you tell me when a 60% some kids that are 60% shooters become 80% shooters at the end of the game and some 80% shooters go the other way.
I'd say it's all about pressure.
It doesn't matter what level you are, it doesn't matter what position you play.
Pressure is pressure and you can't you can't wield that pressure.
You're going to be one of those people who drop under the 80% and you lose 80%.
Sure.
So is there a little pressure when you got a Florida lineman coming after you in the fourth quarter of the game?
Oh, just a timing contact.
Great to be working with him.
He I love the way you came and it stuck around at the University of Georgia.
And we might have to talk about a young man who's got to make the same decisions if we get a chance some time as well.
And that's the moment with the ball.
Saint Francis leading, trailing by five with the ball.
Greer Looking to try and work and now they got Daniels guarding her.
That's an interesting matchup.
She goes by her drives the lane blocking foul, so she'll go back to the line That's that's that's her number one player gets her number one player.
You say, hey, stop it, Green said, hey, all right, let's go at it.
She goes one on one and gets to the basket again.
That's what she's been doing all day, is driving the ball to the basket, forcing them to collapse it.
Now she's at the free throw line with the truck stop.
Saint Francis two, four, six free throw in green has ten points.
And by the way, I think I mentioned to where she spent her first two years in high school.
Her selfless similarities to right?
That's correct.
So a little bit of extra incentive for her and the person who told me that was a Southwest Atlanta Christian person, I think they would like to have her on this team right now.
And obviously something happened where because that's about a 30 mile difference in schools geography wise.
NC State was 21 of 22 coming to power last time they played each other in the U.S. game makes them both this time.
That's the league.
The three Saint Francis now on a seven to nothing run in a big time down for southwest Atlanta Christian as we play the final minute of the third quarter.
I don't think they're holding they're looking to run their offense down low.
It goes with this metric tries to and somehow she forces out the heavy pressure and makes the Amber Brown definitely a mismatch right there.
But she had a lot of white shirts all around her and she still got the ball up.
Final 30 seconds, an important 30 seconds for both teams.
Underneath they go the ball is she fouled on the way up and we're going to see that last basket and that was just sheer strength.
Tell us about it.
Was she Amber Brown got down low.
You see, she's already got cannons packed with all the all the way up in the goal.
And she's just gorgeous, who just strong willed that went into the basket.
Absolutely perfect description that was a will the basket and that one the left hander puts the first one up and good and after a very poor start that was Carter was made the foul after a very poor start they've made three free throws in a row.
She had an outstanding move to get to the basket to cause a foul and now she's at the free throw line and hits both of them.
Nothing but net and either one of them.
She now has 14 points from three point difference.
4138 final 30 seconds.
The third quarter dribbling the ball out.
Now they go down low to the two, the two star players, Carter and Brown, are working on each other.
That's the third power and second foul.
Okay, good.
14.4 seconds.
Carter will go to the line trying to extend a three point lead.
Now, I don't know you can feel it getting electric in here now, getting close to this fourth quarter.
It's getting a little chippy down low.
But some of the key players and a big miss right there by Alexa Carter.
There it is, 14 and a half points for black Schatz, 11 rebounds, four steals.
She does it all for this team and she misses four free throws.
The ball loose on the floor.
The one time that Saint Francis got the loose ball.
Now, the final 10 seconds of the third quarter drew with the ball 7 seconds dribbling at the top of the key against Daniels breaks down low, throws it up at the buzzer and boom we go to the fourth quarter.
We got a banana in game.
Wow.
It's getting exciting here.
Make making an 11 there to run by Saint Francis in the last two and a half minutes Cuts it from points to one.
Here's green laying it up and in there's the three point range ball from the other Erika will be driving a fourth quarter this time out.
Thompson is off the green in the fourth quarter of game one of six here at Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Today's we're going to go over to Raven.
She's near the Saint Francis bench.
Yeah, above the Saint Francis bench.
You can tell that they have a lot of excitement, a lot of anxiety, and they just want this so bad.
Coach Kennedy is telling them, fourth quarter, y'all don't give anything.
Don't give anything up to them on the court.
No stupid passes, no stupid fouls.
You Even see the senior leadership of Antoinette Antoinette Brown to Candice Williams giving her direction on the court.
You can tell these girls really want this game since 2016.
So Francis is going to have the ball to start the fourth quarter here.
T.J., before this game started, we thought we were going to be one of the more competitive games of the whole 14.
It's living up to it.
And I think we got it in one way.
Unique stat is Saint Francis has outscored Southwest his academy 12 to 0 of big points, 12 to 0.
So they had nine big points in the third quarter and a lot of those are coming from the hands of number three, miss and our five year career.
Now we're going to see a replay here.
She stops and encourages couldn't help herself here so she's going to line to shoot two and that's the third foul on Tristan Carter.
This has been something that's happened all game, going to the basket, going to the rim, attacking salaries and then a cruises right at the rim and getting fouled.
We talked about fouls being the number one thing they have to make sure they do.
They're making them feel the foul shots right now.
First tie of the game since the referee threw the ball in the air.
Oh, wow.
And here's a chance for the first Saint Francis lead.
Yeah, they got it.
They trailed eight to nothing to start.
They've been behind for 24 minutes and 10 seconds to right there.
Saint Francis with the lead and a big run here coming from ten down they're going to show that bench statistics you had there before DJ 101 everybody that's that's the key to the game right now.
Outlook goes a long three pointer on the way no good rebound by Saint Francis up the court they come Well here's the three ball here it is There's we both know that come inside out we covered those three people that you see in the shoot four point lead 16 to 2 run Now the ball gets taken away again.
The momentum has definitely shifted strongly in the ways of Saint Francis winning and very real for Saint Francis right now.
Green with a ball left side to Williams back out to green She looks at the three from the rim no good ball in the flow picked up by Saint Francis That's the one of the other big difference is they're getting the loose balls now.
Yeah he's just another one second chance points there.
Give me a second chance points give it another opportunity to shoot the ball.
4541 Saint Francis We're in the final 7 minutes of the fourth quarter.
Williams driving to brown Brown through the horn nice block and backed away and picked up loose by Daniels She's double teamed in the corner.
That's a bad place to be, but she gets right out of it.
Here she comes, taking it all to old slow coast to coast with the finger roll.
D.J.
Once she broke the corner, you just kind of felt she was taking it all the way.
And you started screaming coast to coast.
Yeah, about.
About Colorado.
Yeah.
You can see the determination.
Seattle now, as you see, feel the momentum swinging as well.
The leaders of this team, she said I'm not I would not allow this.
4543 Williams with the ball to Davis Williams in green handed just a literally a handoff now green in the whole ball blocked nicely by Carter but they call a foul do what they do best go to the rim now we're going to see a replay on this one right now taking it to the basket six ball she got a lot of ball and she also got a little body to too.
So now they go to the line.
They they were horrible free throw and now they've made their last four in a row.
Let's see what happens here with green on the line, big free throws here.
And again they drop all their players back display, play defense, 12 points.
Green misses the first one.
She'll get a second.
Brown continues to be the leading scorer for the night, but Green is catching up quickly.
Absolutely.
To the Browns 17 at the moment.
And now she's making her way on the charts.
The Miami University signee eyes it.
She'll think about that a lot more after today this right now we've got a state championship on the two point game so what it comes down to this is why you will find out all year long this is why you work hard in the summer that you're playing on the just because you want to get to this point.
5 minutes ago, you're down to the state championship game.
So we got a time out here.
We got a minute to talk.
You got Drini who actually obviously know.
Is that because she played with them for two years.
These kids have played six times.
They've had three games with a manager for San Francisco.
They played ten in the last four years by for a lot together in the summer.
What does that do is that when you play that you know the kid so well, it really makes it extra special.
It could be possibly more special in a state championship game.
I mean, even when you play together so long, you have that consistency, you have that continuity between yourself and your teammates.
Also, when you see other players that you've played against all summer, you know their strengths and weaknesses.
So it also adds to the dynamic of the game.
So this is just going to come down to the last couple of letters of this game.
So we got to look forward to the ending.
You got to look forward to everything works all year long.
Coming down to one signature moment here.
What's a part of this?
You've made it a state tournament in any sport.
We didn't make it this far.
We always it to the game before the state championship.
So you play in this game, you start with the rest of your life.
I agree.
My daughter to play in two state championship volleyball teams at Wesleyan.
And then I know her father will never.
There's just something special about this time of year.
It means so much.
And we're going to have a state champion crowned in the next five and a half minutes unless it goes to overtime.
Jump shot from the side, no good.
Rebound controlled by brown hands to green.
The other thing, they're going to keep doing what they've been doing, attacking the basket, dishing it is to the wing or outside and follow it to get to the basket.
Brown tied up in the corner looking for help.
She gets it to Davis.
Davis drops the ball to Williams.
The ball double teamed and she Maddox me over back.
Yep she crossed the line She's she's obsessed with herself but she knows we'll see it right here.
It's been here by quarters.
It was 18 to 11.
It was actually eight to nothing.
It was 31, 28 or eight at the half.
And then you could see the third play was played.
Even this game has been played very, very closely all the way through.
Absolutely.
It's been leads them up to ten and has been leads as close as one.
And we're coming down to under 5 minutes.
So it's really going to get tight now.
Green pulls up at the top of the circle that goes off no good, but Brown gets the rebound and she's farther, she goes up and we've only had one lead change.
Southwest Atlanta Christian controlled the first 25 minutes and now the fourth quarter.
So far it's been Saint Francis and Brown is going back to the lines to see the ball and just put it in work underneath the basket nice pull up jumper down by green.
But Brown is down there working and gets the foul.
They've got to hit their free throws down here.
Boy, we need to get a free throw down here if we can tap him.
But, but another missed free throw but a five the third foul and that's the key player for them Marquita Daniels get got that ball it could have gone on One of the two players they called it on her and she is critical to this team had so little is clinched the pair want up to a three point lead just under 5 minutes to play fourth quarter every point matters so she shouldn't be mad on the person but every point matters.
Krejci now top of the circle looking for a person on the right side working on the right side two person game right now drives the base back out man standing all alone.
That's the freshman taking a shot missing up and in very interesting the coach was worried about playing the young freshman Tanisha Green and now she's got her in crunch time and she's had the last two shots.
Danny in front this number five.
She usually always in the first off the bench.
Yeah.
They've got big plans for her, big hopes for her, and they put her in when it's crunch time.
One point game about to go under 4 minutes.
Good job again by Alexis Carter down in the end getting that second chance points here.
Thunder back to lead down back and back to one Daniels Green Daniels playing with three fouls gets the ball to Williams.
She drives the lane ball knocked away.
And we're going to get to see that last basket here in just one second.
Yeah, we saw Commissioner Walker having oversight on the side, Alexis Carter being right there in good position to make a play on how the inbounds pass comes all the way out to the halfcourt line.
350 on a moving clock.
They drive to the hoop and fouled before she goes to the basket.
Kevin Where we are with two fouls, 14 fouls.
So we've still got a ways to go before they're shooting free throws and you it a long time ago at the end of this game it's going to come down to who can make their free throws.
Both teams at about 60%.
But let's see how they do in this final 4 minutes.
All the statistics go out the window because you can't get up during pressure.
Absolutely.
That's what we talked about.
Pressure is key right now.
She's having a chance to redeem herself with free throws.
If she can make these free throws, you forget about the ones she missed earlier.
But now up in the others, her confidence doesn't go down.
Now they're going to need her, especially the last three and three and a half minutes across.
Halfcourt one point game.
Saint Francis leading Southwest Christian trailing but has the basketball their star player pulls up from a three.
It's way off the mark and the ball is loose on the floor and picked up by Netti Brown.
There's the two people we featured earlier in the game again dominating, most of the game ball Logan Brown driving to the hoop and blocking foul is Carter again.
It's more like football and basketball.
Hey he's got to have some memories here they do I'm out today for the saw after this game but they get the win up to the all forward Alexis call it just doesn't get there time I think she wanted to take a charge but didn't get there in time and that's the foul on her so all of a sudden the two star players for southwest Atlanta Christian, one with four, the other with three, Netty Jones and Brown on the line and makes the first three throw big 3000 hits those three things going to be the end all be all for this game 19 points for her She's made five of them from the line 319 to play a two point game, nothing but ten 4845 No panic.
There's still 3 minutes to go.
She has time.
They don't have rush it.
They all need a three pointer right now.
They just need to get a quality basket right now.
Carter at the top of the circle pulls the ball high overhead.
As you point out, when you're that tall, that's a smart thing to do.
And they call brevity 3 minutes too many.
That's not what they needed their turn over.
But now you got to forget about it and move on.
And now it's time for they've got to get a defensive stop.
Full court pressure by Southwest Atlanta Christian Ball.
At least they pick it up now.
There they come running sometimes there's a break after this way, after the right time, they throw it away.
So there's two things about the full court press.
Sometimes when you break it, then you get excited.
Yeah, that's what happened there that's exactly what I was thinking, too.
They got a little bit too excited.
No need to rush.
Once you break the press and you're in a situation where they are, pull it back out.
Be patient and get a quality shot.
You don't always break it in the back for it.
Sometimes it's just like that one.
Here's the freshman walker with a long three no good.
The rebound on the floor controlled by Alexis Brown and Chicago leather.
She went up and when she fouled or just knocked away I think they're just not going away.
242 on a stop 3845 Long pass to Daniels down low it goes to Carter Carter tied up with three players around her out it goes long three no good Carter with the rebound body blocks her out and she hasn't seen that.
We've seen it happen three or four times in 11 finds a way to the basket 20 points.
And so often we've talked about her height that was just quickness that she can straight.
Is this just being resilient, making sure you're going to get to the basket scoring, dive into the hoop lays it up for the rim doesn't drop picked up by Carter.
Here she comes right on the other way right side down low The Carter back up short rebound and then another lead change back in favor of southwest Atlanta Christian by one Lexi's Carter by Alexis CORNISH joined up with Kersey Anthony for the force.
He puts his team on hard bang.
We're going to see her show up twice here right now.
Yeah, I mean, she just gets to the basket right now, cuts double teams.
Alma, get to the ball.
I'm gonna be more aggressive than you are right now.
And this is just pure one, two.
This is pure.
We'll not giving up on the play.
And she does that with 22 points to lead all scorers for Nettie Brown.
She has nap excuse me for Alexis Carter the six foot one senior.
She has not declared where she's going to go to college.
Coach Allen says that they're dedicated to this.
They got here to the state game last year.
They just weren't quite ready for it.
They dedicated their whole season to this.
I tell you, wherever she goes, they're going to get an outstanding athlete, outstanding player.
She's come in averaging only 14 points a game.
And how great is it to be a senior?
It's one of the best games of your life right now playing at this team.
Well, you're back.
That really gets up for me to see your city.
The way she's doing it will be.
San Francisco will have the ball trailing by one with 2 minutes to go.
Someone's going to win a state championship in the next hundred and 20 seconds.
Yeah, it's going to be fun.
It's going to be for Alexis Carter.
She had six in the first four and a second six in the third, another six here in the fourth quarter.
So she's definitely had a good day and done exactly exactly what she wanted to do.
It's been a well-played game and.
All the statistics that we get come from one of the best in the business, Kevin Bryant.
And we really love having him here doing the game for us.
It's a security blanket for me.
I can tell you that there's a full court pressure put and under 2 minutes to go.
Green, brings it up, gets it across to Davis, back to green.
She's attacking right side to Davis, down low into the corner.
The long three short.
I thought the same thing is here there's Daniels the other way drops the ball too and it's touched by someone in a white shirt.
I don't see who that somebody blocked it away from her.
Yeah, I think Candy William got a hand on there.
She was going up, but every time, every time I see it, every every gray shoot, the ball, I think, is going to go in.
She does, too.
I think underneath back out to Daniels minute a half to play with the lead and a one point late game.
And the ball is southwest Atlanta Christian.
Now they come out pressure with a man to man underneath it goes open as the freshman.
She throws it up no good.
Kyra gets another rebound.
The ball loose and control by Saint Francis.
That was a great look.
And then she throws the ball away.
Here's Carter driving and she's fouled as she goes to the hoop.
The young lady, Nyesha Brown, is right in front of us right now.
One of her teammates is coming over to console her.
She has really struggled here, coming in in the fourth quarter.
Just a great job here.
I mean, what else do you want Alexis Carter to do?
I mean, she's she's shot the ball.
She's had blocks, she's had rebounds.
Now she gets a steal, 24 steals on the as well.
She I'll tell you what, they want her to make a free throw.
They can't do anything.
But we had that set up that was going to happen.
Yeah yeah.
I mean like we talked about earlier.
They got to make sure they get something.
She can't leave out this missing most one point game.
Second one good.
50 to 4870 seconds to go green with the ball back to the two seniors playing catch with each other in the backcourt.
Now they get it across the line to Davis and listen to the other drives the lane left handed layup not good with less than a minute two point game ball's in the court loose picked up loosely and now they call timeout got the ball in the hands of the freshman coach now it's up I want a timeout It was going to get a little frantic right there She didn't want to give him a chance and throw it away and make a bad decision.
But great timing right here to get to get his girls calmed down and say, listen, we got 50 seconds so we're state champions.
Make sure we control the ball, make sure we do everything possible and make sure we come out of here with a win.
The gentleman right there is Coach Carter, and he's got two girls playing in this game, the senior and the sophomore also runs the camp for right there.
Dwight Howard.
Dwight Howard, Senior, by the way, is the athletic director here at the Southwest Atlantic Kitchen.
I had a chance to visit with him at the semifinals last week.
He gave me as much of the information I could get.
He was really a great guy to talk to and very, very proud of the way great things out in L.A., obviously, where it begins, but it's an NBA, so he's definitely doing great things.
And he's I was one of the clincher right now, doing some pretty big things over the counter here.
We're shooting a shift championship.
Got 15 seconds to do that with the ball.
They won it in 2006.
Put the girls and the boys, by the way, we have not had that storyline.
There's four schools here that have a chance to win the boys and girls.
The first two didn't get it done.
Saint Francis, the next one.
Their boys are going to play in the game after this, but they have to the first job done first.
And right now they trailed by two points with 50 seconds to go.
That's a great car.
That's a great storyline world too.
And we got a lot of stuff going on here today.
Great place to be here.
Make it.
You can feel the electric atmosphere here.
Let's get even better here with 50 seconds to go in this game.
South hasn't last scored the last five points of this game to come from three down to two ahead.
Carter driving to the hoop lays it up in but that's it got scored by sure to sweep the seams and money all day she's she is wanted it more than anybody else now the ball taken away at half court loose on the floor.
They finally are going to call it jump ball that's going to go to southwest Atlanta Christian assistant, great job inside was an interesting fighting steals by not giving up anything even though you're up by four not giving them anything at what point you have to think about fouling.
Yeah, you got to start now.
I mean, you're down by four.
You got to stop this clock.
So you try to get the inbounds pass.
If you don't get it in a couple of seconds tonight, you know, they just 30 seconds.
They didn't run that out.
Timeouts left one for each team at half court with the ball way out.
I'm surprised they're not fouling.
Let's see what they do.
They're down for under 25 seconds.
How we're going to come out and get around it.
20 seconds.
Finally, they travel over the ball.
Oh, I've seen the bench listening.
Travis goes to you look at yelling from the crowd.
Yes, they can hear him on the other side and they make a substitution to get the shooter back in the game.
I believe the young lady that was in for Saint Francis was just in the foul and she didn't do it.
Somebody else was coming over 2000, maybe in anticipation of getting hit.
She just moved her feet and got the foul.
Now, under 20 seconds to go down four.
They need two scores to get back in this game and the foul to stop the clock.
You get the score when the clock starts.
That's probably the last thing that south of Christian wanted was to get fouls.
16 seconds.
Well, there's two last things you don't want to happen.
You don't want to turn the ball over.
And that's the fifth foul on the star player, Martina Daniels.
She's had to do a yeoman's job guarding Greer and the screen in the second half.
She had 16 points just about at her playoff average.
But the two things you don't want to have happen a turnover and a foul to stop the clock.
And the moment those things just happened, which is worse, I don't know.
Absolutely.
And now you see the difference in when the game down to the line.
You get somebody who's rebounding.
Now Candice Williams sinks the first one.
So you know, the press is coming.
Absolutely.
And with it, southwest Atlanta, Christian, it's going to take their last time out.
Now, here's the thing.
The sun was setting first near their best ball handlers out of the game now.
Yes.
So they've got to find a way to get the ball.
And who do they trust enough to, you know, take it?
They always had Marquee Daniels in there to get the ball and to get it up the court.
So now they've got to find a way to get this ball limp after the make or miss.
By the way.
Williams on the free throw line, a 70% shooter on the season looking to see what she's done today.
And with 16 seconds to go Williams will be on the and it's a very good point you made about Daniels being out of the game.
She as we said earlier, they basically play a one guard offense.
So she's the guard now.
So I think that's the biggest reason why a timeout was they have to find a way to get this ball in so that they know they could turn it over and give it right back to Saint Francis with a chance to tie it up.
Prince Williams on the line is three for three free throw in this afternoon.
So I guess you want the right player there right now.
Do you follow?
The person they bring in the game that's playing point guard that the new player in the game or I think you have to it's only 6 seconds you got to you got to do something.
You got to put them on the line and hope they miss.
It's a one possession game, but there's a heck of a big difference between a one possession three point game and a one possession two point game.
So let's see what Ms.. Williams can do about getting a little bit closer.
52 to 49, straight up, nothing but net two points.
Full court pressure by Saint Francis Falcons into the freshman walker.
They didn't follow her, but they now foul Amber Brown I believe that is that is who gets fouled I think they would love to have fouled the freshman Tamisha Williams Yeah cause you could just see she doesn't really have her confidence right now.
She does and she's missed a couple of shots and you could see she got down on itself a little bit.
But said she's only a freshman playing in one of the biggest game probably of a life right now.
But she's in there for a reason.
Amber Brown, a 55% shooter on the season, 14 seconds to go, one and one no good rebound on the floor and control by Saint Francis.
Here comes Davis with the ball driving towards the who plays it up and hammer Oh wow wow.
Holy cow.
We say we don't have a ball Murray we got one.
So we're going to see a replay of Davis right here, taking the contact and being able to get it up and get that one.
Here's a second look at it from the end camera.
What the term we talked about the will of Carter.
How about the wheel of her second tie of the game?
Now, the chance to do that, the lead free throw, no good 7 seconds, final 7 seconds.
They don't have a time out.
They're going to come up and take the shot.
BROWN on the drive into the lane, the ball's take away.
We're going to go over no over time.
And how about that, Roderick, letting them play there.
What do you think about that?
The state champs again, you've got to let them play it out.
Let's let the players win the game.
We're going to go to a commercial when we come back.
We'll see that to see if the referees made the right call there.
But I think they absolutely letting them play it out.
32 minutes wasn't enough.
D.J we're going to have the four minute overtime when we come back.
5252 provided fourth quarter at the end of regulation.
We'll be back after this timeout and that graphic tells it all.
We're in overtime 5252 two teams that had played a lot with each other.
Reagan was in the huddle with the Southwest team.
What did you learn?
Oh, man.
Marquita Daniels.
You can tell she is just down and out on herself.
You can take a look at her on the bench.
If the camera's pointing over there and you can tell she wants to be in the game.
The other girls are calm, they're collected, they know they've got to do what they've been doing all game.
Well, some of the things that we've been doing all game to just come out with a win on top of the two players that have had so much to do with it besides Martina Daniels we're going to look at right now, Here is Alexis Carter.
What a game she's at, man.
She best 25 right now about the last play of the game.
I mean, this is probably one of the best plays I've seen taking the turnaround.
That's not going to be done all day.
We take it to the rim, take it to the basket and force ourselves because you get a foul.
Jay Davis is a five foot four junior, averages seven points a game, but they had her making the big basket there to send it overtime.
And now the start of this fourth quarter of the overtime we get a jump ball again.
Absolutely.
Anybody in the store that you don't have more that you just heard Reagan talk about it.
They don't have marquee names in the mix for minutes, but we saw them trying to get the ball in.
Nobody dribbled it in or nothing.
How big will not having her in here in the game?
I think it's out there basic are going to play without a guard They've got five bigs in the game right now and we'll see what happens with it.
The tipped controlled after going to the ground right there.
Let's see what we're looking at.
Today's numbers.
Proof that the eagle shooting stayed pretty good, turnovers pretty even.
That's about as even as the score right there when you look at the statistics there.
Thank you very much, Kevin.
The shot goes up, hangs on the rim and falls off.
Yeah, just wow look at shot there.
One good stat is that was a lot of cushion.
What's like 43 hits and they were one for three On the other hand say present seven of 11.
And that's the key to why this game is where it is now.
So many things that in this game that you can almost say should happen to free throws, determine in the turn that come back.
So many things now they go low.
The ball is tipped away and stolen by Saint Francis and they call it jump ball Alternate possession.
The Southwest Atlanta Christian Group have been very slow whistling to this.
And that one was a little quick, wasn't it?
It was I thought I thought they had a great had a good shot at it.
Ball inbounds it comes in late up and in.
Nice move by Amy grits it to score They're going back to what they did only her second basket has four points Saint Francis down to ball in the corner now back to the top and here's green with the ball gets a nice pick comes to her left and I allow her to breathe too much She's been a clock under 3 minutes she had one basket scored in overtime green with a long three try to the rim no good Davis who had hit the basket to tie the game, was trying to get the rebound at five foot four and a disconnected away from her out of bounds did do a great job and here's the basket to put them ahead Great job Amy Griffin right there getting good body good good positioning on the inside and getting a high percentage shot like a full court pressure from Saint Francis.
I throw to the tallest person on the court and she she brings it down us a cross again.
They don't have a guard.
They're playing double team.
Their center is dribbling through the ball, pulls up, takes the shot from the free throw line Nice rebound by Walker Pick up ball on the ground and control by Saint Francis Lack of a ball handler Absolutely you can tell it's all just trying to get it to their knees Williams driving the way wow Oh really.
That's nice right there That may not really have a guard dog to handle.
That's the quick play by the guards.
And Lola, I'm here with him.
Get him off.
That's good both ways, right?
Lot of big out there.
And that's what they do.
They drive the Francis takes it to the bucket under 2 minutes to go.
Ball's on the floor.
Picked up by Saint Francis.
They not let in the overtime haven't led for much of the game.
It's been mainly southwest Atlanta.
But we're in the last 2 minutes now of a tie game.
Here comes green driving and blocking foul.
That one could have gone either way.
Yeah yeah they're pretty good there is that can't describe what the guard does here It's a nice crossover right to left.
Oh, nice quick step.
It lays it up.
That's a technique like this.
This good movement.
They're hard to guard that in.
If you're coaching the behind the back crossover, whatever you want to call it, boy, that's using the ball, using your body to protect the ball and going to the hoop.
Absolutely.
Here's green on the line with shooting free throws first went up and in Saint Francis back in front 55 to 54 game that's he's going to need to win this game and they made seven of 11 in the fourth quarter and they are here they are again making the free throws when they count all of a sudden this place got quiet minute 40 to 1 point.
Now it's too green with 14 points off the bench full court pressure.
Here comes the center bringing the ball up for, say, a southwest Atlanta Christian driving to the whole all the way was tough.
Lay it up.
No good rebound by Brown by Griffin on the floor control Now they call it jump ball and that's what they've been doing most of the time.
The scramble this time it'll go to Saint Francis.
Here's the replay we just talked about.
We talked about him not having a big guy down there, having someone who can control the ball.
Maybe you don't have a point guard or guard on the court, do you?
Do you give it to your best player?
How much of that remind you of football there?
Right, T.J., they were fighting with great emotion, pretty physical discredit.
His calls are tough.
They want it the worst of ways and they are physically playing the game.
Two point lead for Saint Francis, minute and a half to play in overtime.
Full court pressure by Southwest.
They just beat the five count.
Green has it now she gets it to Brown and there's a foul in the back court.
Wow.
For the critical free throw shooting the line is looks pretty good at the end the lefty a whole bunch of players for the for a southwest Atlanta Christian of a sudden they have four fouls that's Chris Carter the sophomore with four losses for Kevin we've got the star player already out hurt both the Carter girls had four fouls, as does Brown.
So there's three.
Griffin two, there's three guys with four and one has already fouled out.
Now the big first ten to the free throw.
Nettie Brown up and in three point lead for Saint Francis And here's where they win the game right here at the line 21 points seven from the free throw line without a key distributor for solid with some indication it's hard for them to get the ball down low forcing the big guys, the big man to do it the ball only up the court three point enough to make it a double and she does need to bust through scores now.
The third best game, the best and most stolen they come the ball stolen away back by Saint Francis.
It's getting away right now timeout Saint Francis I'm not sure right now is going to get in the way of an Olympic boxing hero.
Yeah she's trying to make sure she's getting her to settle down.
They would love training right there.
They got the steal.
But you know what?
I think, you know, say Francis has got the ball more right now for the good of the lack of point guard.
The lack of play right now for some was only hurt.
Did he have it able to beat this press?
He got it up here.
But it's not good decision making.
We don't have a person who can handle the ball caught up.
The court was pressured and there's no question about it.
There's coach counting up in the huddle just trying to will her team.
But look at the looks on their faces right there.
There's grave concern right now.
You can just see it slipping away.
76 seconds.
But the way this game's gone down, all of a sudden, one quick turnover in the game to flip flop back again and the emotions can change right now?
We just saw the same way for Saint Francis.
They were worn down by a couple of baskets and were able to get a turnover, get a couple of fouls.
They were right back in this game, so they were definitely not over.
They were down four in regulation.
They came back Saint Francis on a60 run here to take a four point lead with 76 seconds to go.
But I would say right now a real critical time down the floor for more for the defensive team than the offensive team really two possession game already green with the ball in the brings it across to halftime halfcourt 70 seconds to go got a foul somewhere don't they have no clock and they still scored things just hold this ball until they get a good shot.
That's Williams with the ball doing they are they actually have a three point guards in the game they're most of guard so the advantage clearly was Saint Francis right.
So Francis has no reason to go under a minute.
Here's one foul.
They finally foul and they got all those girls with three five with 4000. Who's going to foul?
That's Kristen Kerr, I believe that's her fifth.
So that's the second player to fall out.
Wow.
The sophomore, one of the two Carter sisters, the game.
So they are going deep and here comes Walker back into the game for southwest Atlanta Christian.
And the line is Candice Williams now putting one player underneath this time.
But it's just you know, they recognize don't have a guard crystal ball up the court so dig in and therefore they're four there for the full court press.
That's makes it hard on both ends of the court.
The First one up and good and look at them making their free throw making this free throw.
We talk about the game games going to be one at the line and Saint Francis has stepped up and made their free throws when they it and they're a 60% shooting team man but not in the final 4 minutes here in overtime another one down six point lead for Saint Francis with 48.646 in overtime and now no better but in the win game for you here's Carter looking to the left side.
Jones pulls up and takes the three front of the rim.
No ball on the ground still being fought for and look at this pile up and jump ball possession error of the Southwest Atlanta Christian's 32 seconds.
This is for all the marvel.
So getting on the floor is no problem.
We're going to see a replay of that right now just fine, just gritty.
Everybody wants to this game.
You do whatever you have to do to get it looks like a fumble on foot.
Bob Carter puts the shot up no good, tries to get her own rebound just now.
She's got to try to go back up again.
Triple team looking for help, 23 seconds turns around, shoots no good.
Saint Francis controls the rebound and they call another jump ball.
This one will go to Saint Francis, who is 6 seconds away from celebrating their first state championship.
16.
And the way it happened is all summer where they came back and fall back.
There's so much adversity.
This game not really seen well in the beginning of the game.
Being down eight to start inbounds will come.
They get inbounds and they'll foul quickly in the back court.
And yeah, we talked about at the start of the game the first 5 minutes we're standing at an end and you said keep their nerves low and not saying that the other team didn't keep their nerves, but how about Saint Francis that you just have to give him all sorts of credit for the will to win this game?
They definitely did.
They really came out of this so hard.
They fought hard to controlled the those early.
It made sure that, you know, they stayed out of control.
You seen coach call a timeout early and maybe we talked about her making a no free throw here seven for seven in the overtime And we talked about Coach Kennedy, you know, playing a Clemson game, winning on her own.
So she understand what it takes mentally to win a game like this.
The next one up any and all of a sudden it was a pick them game is now eight points down the court it goes in the ball is out of bounds and on here by Saint Francis good to see the will go out but when we talked about well I want to go back and talk about Alexis Carter again, what a stellar performance she had in defeat.
Now the ball gets loose, picked up and try to up from underneath.
They finally get thrown in, they think three or four times, 7 seconds to go knock all time out with 5.8 seconds to go.
But again, there were so many girls that played so hard in this game.
Southwestern granite Christian, who dominated for so long.
And we just can't say enough about Marquita Daniels and also Alexis Carter.
But now it's about time to talk about the new state champions tonight.
Absolutely.
We got to give credit to those two, though.
Those two really played their butts off today and really gave everything they had in order.
And a 25 Saint Francis lead, they do the old fashioned way.
They went after you.
They were aggressive.
They took it to the basket and they made free throws when it mattered the most.
You lose Daniels, who's had 16 points and Carter with 25 points.
That's 41 of your 56 points.
Well, now scoring the cards really came to play for Saint Francis and Team Davis making it critical basket at the end of regulation.
And then Nicky and Williams making free throws.
Look at this.
Here's your statistic for fourth quarter Notre Dame 15 to 19 from the free throw line that's that better win game for you.
That's how you win not only win games, it's got to win you state championship here in my 5 seconds.
That's absolutely right And when that when your practice in your free throws out in the driveway and you're thinking about winning a state championship.
Yep.
That's what those girls just in inbounds pass Green is going to be fouled and they'll call it with 3.9.
How many times did you shoot a free throw to win a state championship in your drive?
Oh, man, I see.
Over 100.
I know.
I sure did that easily.
I mean, you think about it, you you see this crowd yelling?
They're screaming.
You're at the free throw line and you say, this is 3 seconds to go in the game to win the game.
And there's a very disappointed coach.
When she got to the state championship two in a row and she's going to go home with the second place trophy twice.
She's a great coach, a great educator, a real fine person to talk to.
Something tells me she'll be back again 3.9 seconds.
Both these programs a good player in every class.
That's how you build programs, isn't it?
We talked about the freshmen commission Walker.
She'll be back.
She got another three years.
So when you have underclassmen for both teams, you understand the importance of women.
Now we put the announcer jinx.
Having missed the last two free throws, but it will make no difference.
The final score in overtime Safe pair 262 South Southwest Atlanta 56.
Outstanding game three down to the court.
You see the excitement is that these girls will never forget this one.
A thrill for Saint Francis and the first the next game coming up is the boys.
So that means there's a chance that back to school for the double state championship.
Four teams had a chance The first three at first two didn't do it.
But now you have it.
We'll go down to Raven.
Right now, she's got the winning coach.
Coach, your face.
What's going through your head right now?
Unbelievable.
I mean, we were down and we've been on down on them before, but this group of girls, a special group of girls, nobody expected us to be here, They fall today.
They have so much heart.
They worked so hard, postseason, preseason, all season.
We had a tough schedule.
And they they just play.
I'm so proud of them.
It's a special team.
I've been saying it from the beginning of the year and I'm unbelievable.
It's unbelievable.
What moment What was the deciding factor you as a coach in this game with the defense and I started a half man and management our bread and butter playing defense hard nosed face defense has won us a lot games this year.
And, you know, getting the kids to believe it starts on the defensive end and they bought into it.
We came out, got some good steals, got some.
Like I said, we turned the game around for us coach.
Congratulations.
Enjoy your win.
Thank you.
Back to you guys.
Coach Kenny has said a couple of times to us that that this is not our best talented team, but it was the best chemistry in.
If I can disagree with the state championship, I'm going to say the defense was great, but free throws won this game.
Absolutely.
We we talked about it being 15 and 19 free throws, won this game.
All our determination.
Same friends as you simulate champs.
There you see the couple of ways you saw Alexis Brown make a big basket.
There you see the happiness at the end D.J.
the working with you going to play in overtime the final score 6256.
Saint Francis is your state champion in the girls private one eight.
These coverage of the end of the A Boys and girls state championship.
Time now to present the trophy to the girls private single champions and for that we go to the GHC essays Ernie Yarborough Thank you, Mark Coach, on behalf of Dr. Ralph Swearengen and the Georgia High School Association, we want to congratulate your team on a great season and a great championship game.
Congratulations to your championship, Coach Kennedy.
Talk about what this moment means to you, your school and your program.
It's a huge moment for us.
Is the first basketball state championship at Saint Francis for these ladies, some of them as their fathers.
So it's a stepping stone for us.
We're so happy as a program and as a school.
Our boys are up next and hopefully they can bring to home.
And one day I get the double double.
Nettie Brown talk about this game you go to overtime you had to work hard to win this one.
Oh gosh, I just J. Davis, JJ JJ No, but I just really want to thank God and this was all for our coach Crockett right here.
And I just really love him.
And I'm going to miss all of these people right here.
And when we say, All right, Candace Williams, peek out around the coach here.
What Does this mean to you and your girls teammates that you won this one?
It means a lot because we work hard every day in practice.
And we always felt like, you know, some people doubted, us, you know, so we always practice like we have something to prove, you know what I mean?
So, you know, we made it.
Coach Kennedy, the first for Saint Francis.
That's got to be a big a big smile on your face.
It does is huge.
I'm so happy to be a part of that history that we're making in Saint Francis and be a part of such a great program and great girls, great school.
So it's huge for us.
All right.
Congratulations to the Saint Francis Lady Knights.
They are your class single-A private school state champs, 13th 2013.
Congratulations.
Time now for our TV tailgate party and player Sam.
Congratulations once.
