Georgia Public Television presents the 2001 Georgia high school associate Boys State Basketball Championships.
Major funding for this broadcast is made possible in part by Georgia Natural Gas IBEW Local 613 Georgia Touchstone Energy Cooperatives and by South Prospect Live from the Center Flex in Macon, it's the GHC Double-A Boys basketball title game between the Calhoun Yellowjackets and the East Hall Vikings.
And welcome everybody to Championship Weekend.
I'm Jim Tanaka.
One game in the book Four More to Go today.
The Double-A championship is next for the call.
Let's go downstairs to Dave Gardner and Field.
HANSEN All right, thanks to I'm Dave Garner, along with Phil and Phil, we're getting ready for the second of five state championships on the afternoon.
Big two, a match up east, Tall and Calhoun certainly going to be a very exciting contest.
Well, buddy, it's great to talk with you again this year.
And this one is promises to be a barnburner.
East Hall's pressure will dictate the game's tempo and they'll get quick scores off it.
Look for them to really increase that pressure.
And Calhoun must do a good job of breaking that pressure to score.
Calhoun Of course, they're going to look at their road to the state championship.
They beat Randolph, play in the semifinals, a team that was expected to be here.
They were number one throughout most of the year.
Of course, they defeated Union Green, Taliaferro and Raven County along the way.
One of the big reasons for their success this year is Casey Baxter, that man right there, Phil?
Well, his ability to score and create scoring opportunities for his teammates makes him Calhoun's top producer.
The flipside of that, of course, East Hall, a very talented team.
And I tell you what, they have been here before.
They were here last year.
They fell to Mitchell Baker, though, who was a three time defending state champ.
And Mitchell Baker is bumped up now to triple-A.
We'll see them a little bit later on this afternoon.
But he's talking to try to make the most of the return trip today.
Exactly.
They're a very senior base team and all those guys on their team can all catch it square love, pass troubleshoot without travel.
And they all handle the ball extremely well.
Hey, look at this down Air Force, the defending state champ for the past two years at single-A, they jump up there.
You look at Mark Bosley, the big senior who looked to lead the way for the game.
His ability to score off the dribble inside outside gives these tall a true triple threat.
This kid's a score.
Go ahead and take a look at the starting lineup.
We're going to look at the crowd.
He's tall, expected to bring run around a thousand folks and they've only got a little over 800 at the school.
So a lot of their fans are, of course, adults and they have certainly brought the crowds out today.
Likewise for the Calhoun Yellowjackets.
And then throw it down to the floor for the starting lineup.
This place is really going up.
They've first at 412 to 3.
They're going to look at the lineup they're in Robert Glass, Edwards and Baxter, That guy Luke Hartley, he can shoot the three stand and still out of the fourth as you saw him bang inside Good player inside on the boards.
Nice role player here three to third Edwards averaging right around nine points.
The ball game for the Jackets did a nice job in the seventh.
He's the guy that stirs the drink right here Jason Baxter can score will handle the ball about 75% of the time and will control what they do offensively and defensively.
He's the one this system plays offensively and defensively.
Here come the Vikings.
He's tall Aussie Aussie Kenny Anderson spent a lot of this wear right here that is where he the shooter runs the point Well this kid's got a super job in the semi against Washington County in the third quarter made three good scores down in the third quarter to the basket Where's a good player inside will make good passes great decisions will rebound There's Derek fakes averaging a little over eight points a ballgame he'll figure into the day as well very stay there all star players to score And here's the guy.
This guy knows how to put the ball in the basket Good feet, good handle can really score.
And that was fun to watch.
During warmups.
They were doing layups.
This guy was going behind the back through the legs, doing all kinds of stuff there.
We'll have to certainly keep our eye out on Mr. Mark Cosby and calling brothers certainly a big reason for the Vikings success.
We'll take a quick timeout and be right back with the tip from a make it center play funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following you're watching.
Members supported GPB, your PBS station, bringing you the best.
You're watching the NCAA basketball championships on TV.
Welcome back to the American Center.
Blanks they've garner along still handsome, bringing you all the action just moments away from tip.
First, let's throw down courtside at Daniel Sargeant.
Hey, guys.
We were this close to having the one team match up in today's Final Four high school decided that wasn't going to work.
They were the team coming into the game, into the playoffs.
They made it all the way through to the semifinals, upset the number one ranked Team Randolph play.
They're here today.
They want to prove that they deserve to win and that they're not to be taken lightly.
Back to you guys.
They could do any other.
Good point there, Phil.
Indeed.
We talked about the heart of this Calhoun team.
They would not give up.
They beat Randolph play by five, a team that was expected to be here and are here this afternoon playing for a state title.
Now never stop today's ballgame.
Converting against East Falls pressure, defensive transition, rebounding and conditioning off the back of his head.
Second and a little because he can shoot the three deep daisy with the three and just like that the Vikings on the attack and this is what he's going to do their defensive pressure is going to try to dictate the tempo of the game oh seven on underneath and the Vikings running the floor once again that's the man up top, Derek cheeks, cheeks and Kazee Nice dribble penetration these guys going through the early knock out that's Anderson underneath number 22 the 510 senior now at this pressure they're going to try to trap that first pass and get it out of there and they're working across now you can break their first that first trap they and you'll get it up to four.
You'll get layups.
However, you must convert the laughs and make them pay for getting in that press.
Edwards with the basketball looking back up top that's Baxter with the number 40.
Well, watch out for him all day All right take about on thousand anticipates very well you guys finally taking it to the hoop This is awesome Oh nice job there by Edwards on the other end.
He'll never win.
It's up to pass.
Stay stay on the ground.
Five nothing Vikings up early on underneath on the other end earlier that time and back and running and the ball as he pulling the trigger and it's off the back of the iron buddy his younger brother comes out of it and keeps it alive.
He's been everywhere to the early, early fall off the foot there, gets it away and his cheeks, he misses it all that time in the back with a lot of bounce, a little left.
He has that three point range.
Even though that shot didn't go down, he has that range now.
What's he going to try to trap this first pass?
They're going to face guard.
They're running up.
Calhoun gets it in there.
They're going to look at coach rates.
ZUCKER Just man to man press 22nd season.
He can see that there's a short dance on there.
Boston Loose.
They keep it alive and whistle and an equal amount of stars.
He's tall, does a nice job of moving their feet defensively.
We're gonna look at this ball poster versus running It does a nice job They've got a slew of assistant coaches over there about seven or eight over there on the bench.
It looks like big payroll.
Want him down the six minute mark.
Looking inside mark Ozone, he still comes in with Foster and there's a shot from three point range.
It's his instant offense.
You can see that they got to pick up the new people.
He's tall Sean Foster on the attack with that three back on the other hand on a block underneath that's going to talk about you can beat their press but you got to convert against it.
Survivor Square with the block and the way with the left and stop the ball good time out like those 336 at the Latino crowd on the floor as the tall crowd goes crazy.
I know he's not happy.
You thought there was a foul on the other end.
Ten Oh Rondo, open the ballgame.
Pretty impressive now Nice layup.
Good He got stopped for that square going every time.
Let's turn that thumb down though like you're looking at your wrist watch Derek Cheeks a58 senior first bucket of the ball game for him And there you go Look at the Viking huddle.
They're averaging a little over 90 points a ballgame on offense.
That's impressive.
Oh, man, We've got to have this person you can read up on thousands of mark packs.
Too much of what you just did.
Cut off 2014, had no rights after 22 years of scouting.
That's quite a stint.
A long time.
Over 300.
Oh yeah.
I've no doubt that I saw this against Randolph play with Calhoun.
They got they looked like they were down and out on the canvas and they got up and then, like I said earlier today, they were like the little engine that could they just hung around, hung around, hung around.
And then they all of a sudden they got over the top.
You saw 4 to 6 in the early going, battling this time with the ball.
Once again, pressure from the Vikings in the backcourt.
Calvin Owusu here to start out the ballgame.
That's basketball.
They wanted it his hands.
Look at the shot here.
He's a winner, James.
He is a winner.
First bucket of the ballgame for the Yellowjackets.
Back to eight.
Looks for a pop play here for five.
Coming up, as we're looking inside, it gets it off the glass again of their high shooting percentage.
Not only gets them in an offensive rhythm, it sets their defensive rhythm six three senior to virus where I remember him from last year.
He sort of several players back off of that runner up team last year.
Senior base club.
If you look at Evans with the basketball, looking inside, he'll take it back out.
He's back to back flip up off the front of the rim and watch down a shot back where he's got great long arms for 38 to go in the first quarter.
Well the he's tall up by ten trying to make a statement early on here they dump it into where he gets away, lays it up and the foul they're going to foul.
They cannot let the offensive man get his hands above his head.
He's got to keep his hands below his shoulder, make him earn them from the stripe that's going to get Chris Edwards for that one.
He's top brought in Justin Smith, Justice, 52, big threes against Wilkinson County in that Sandy Hook.
That semi was a heck of a ballgame one team foul each so both teams player substitution that's a virus where into the game and his numbers 13 and a half points the ballgame and he hits and completes the three point play So where he's got five points in the early going and it's a 40 to 2 lead well coach finding seven here a little bit giving since giving his troops a little bit of a rest fighting play delivers a little punch inside number 25 Dover six foot three JR hit 41% from the floor Once again Vikings go to some pressure and they were trying to get it Foster being harassed by mass Aussie defenses and arms over you don't want to fall in that far away from the basket plus he was coming towards us.
He wasn't even going near the play.
He didn't run.
You two fouls Now on his time, you're going to want to get the ball out of his hands.
After working on top of the inside Knocked away by Dover.
The nice job defensively.
Here they come after days Matt Tozzi with the basketball he's inside outside move goes up to squander that time and brought down by Roberts brothers looking to get rid of it in trouble back there.
Three on three take it away pass What a pass from brother to brother that time and Mark is on the board.
Another time out 17 to 2 run to open the ballgame and the Vikings fans are fired up A great little one hand.
No look pass.
So the one to battle Apple they're knocked away You'll see the turnover Nice pass there again if you're a man goes to double team don't stand diagonally cut to the rim and you'll see layups all day long Mark cause he does a nice job of moving without the basketball again he knows how to score averaging 25 points Ball ballgame for the Vikings this year.
That's something else.
Calhoun, meanwhile, averaging right around 64 points a ballgame.
They're only allowing 47.
So something will have to give today with he's still averaging a little over 90 points under 4 minutes to play in quarter number one from when they consider flex time.
They've got a lot of still Henson as Jon Robbins pushing to bring it back out Just be patient make he's tall play a little halfcourt defense if you look at the turnover story early on Kelly with four turnovers and he hasn't had a nice shot there but he has the capacity of getting himself to the basket.
He's got great body control, strong, stocky kid.
He's around the block.
Two defenders hands, nice player.
Wow, Look at him once again with the left hand, nice concentration.
He turned his thumb down, which caused the roll favorable off the glass, and that's against a three point play.
So he's got five on the afternoon flying back by a couple there.
It's 17 to fives.
This is in the mail here.
You see his first trip to the championship game for Calhoun.
Of course, he's tall, was here last year against Mitchell Baker, where with an outside He's looking to get inside though an offensive foul Nice play by coach to implement a little 2 to 1 half court trap and he's it like to press and like to apply pressure usually don't like it applied to them plus the turnover right now what Calhoun has to do here is not try to get all the points back in one big six feet.
They've got to take their time, be patient, whittle this thing down, play defense.
That's how you'll get back in the game.
Cannon here still that time as it goes out of bounds.
We saw that earlier in the first game.
It was a classic championship.
If Buford was making a comeback there looked like they were well out of that ballgame, but they made a run there.
A patient, Taylor County, will pull it out, but indeed, they did work their way back.
Exactly.
Did you?
Never out of it.
We got a lot of basketball to play.
Still over 3 minutes to go in quarter number one.
That's the way it kicks it out.
A long three point shot.
As we said earlier today, the chief said he can knock down that set shot all day long to leave Hartley six three, junior with a three point shot.
Boy, the press is getting a little subtle there.
They're scrapping it here in the corner where they're able to use this half line on the sideline as a defender or a one guy can be three or two can be fought back to the jackets.
They're going to look at number 32, Justin Smith, who will come on in there and give Ozzie a breather.
They must locate him in the halfcourt set or he'll shoot it.
There's the three point numbers there.
He's tall, two four for Calhoun, one of two in a 1 to 2 trap after basket, gets rid of it over.
Nice pass.
Nice pass.
That time to lay in as they go.
Oh he's going to make his tackle has the defense They're not running up the floor helter skelter playing and he falls in as fast as a real moment in time inside of Roberts and now back again with the turnover.
Now he's starting to pick up the defensive intensity and back on the other end backs that drives the length of the floor has a vast array of powerful Baxter.
He's deceptively fast with the ball.
When he gets it in the open floor, you better get your wheels on because he can go that great acceleration as a reach.
You don't want that when you're looking at Baxter once again, six one junior, he's averaging over 20 points a ballgame himself, 7.2 rebounds and he gets down the basket, he scores, he's the scorer, he's got six on the afternoon 30 substitution.
Now there's a look at their checking back into the Vikings and Baxter once again at the line shooting hits the first but misses on the second there and Mark Darcy brings it down six point ballgame though Calhoun picking it up this time three point range Oh he's just off the mark that time gets a lot of dough.
But I believe his foot was on the line.
He's tall now it's coming down.
I only get one shot at the ball.
They get one and done.
Calhoun's doing a nice job of limiting them.
Only one shot the virus.
We're trying to keep down with him but couldn't blanket both feet in there.
Calhoun Once again, inbounds.
And he's tied with the pressure.
Baxter gets a cross and he may just take it, pushes it off there in a mustang And that time by Hogan, they're going to press you.
You can attack that press score, Lance.
But again, you must convert those layups over the six to generate a nice pass.
All go on a system.
It's a bucket back in his favor for the run game.
Like he's working it outside.
He still has the luxury.
They've got basically four point guards on the floor.
Matt Tozzi for a long range three.
That was NBA range right there.
Phil, he's having a great tournament.
He's made big baskets when they've needed him.
Six points for Matt Garza.
The younger brother is a sophomore.
And you can look at Mark, the eldest of the Kazee brothers guys, but reaching out to wide empty.
But the tempo is definitely in Calhoun's favor that they like to run, but they like to run when they want to run.
Justin Smith Par for that last one.
Once again, some more pressure on the head.
He opens Baxter up top, pulls the trigger off the front of the iron rebound by Robbins keeps it alive.
Oh, take it away though, on the other end, two on one as he sees it, and he lays it in where Great body control by six Derek Sheets with four points to their face guarding here on this press making you throw over the top and with the center fielder Causey they're trying to take it off and you've got a turnover that's that's that's John Roberts.
He throws it across and it is he's tall, back and running.
And now we're going to have a blocking soft under midcourt.
That's a good ball blocking going to be called on Roberts oh three blocked second half.
Well, I tell you what cause he's got asbestos He is he is so fast with the ball.
That's a luxury he still has again, with basically three point guards on the court under a minute to go in quarter number one, the Vikings with it, they needed 23 to 13.
The Chiefs, Kazee and Kazee can really handle it.
His chiefs inside this is a lay and lay and oh he's got that time at the tip goes nuts followed by where that's one of those long arms days where he's got seven and once again similar more pressure it hasn't got it beat I just got to keep There you go.
Oh, nice job.
Oh from behind that time on Matt Dorsey.
But Baxter once again running the floor nicely.
He is kind of deceptive.
Like you said, he can run the floor.
He's very fast again against that pressure when they beat it when he went down the center.
Don't stand your man leaves double dangly.
Cut to the rim, you'll get the layups Now if you're going to block his shot from behind, take your inside hand Go over your opponent's outside shoulder Your body will never touch him.
That's a good foul by Matt Todd.
He's not going to give him an easy last time missing on the first he's 88 47% free throw shooter.
Hands off substitutions.
Come on in there.
Let's give Roland number 14.
And over back in freestyle, Edwards comes into Calhoun's Craig drills number 50 set to check in for the jackets as well holding out his second and this is both of them not a very productive trip that time for the yellow jackets but they're still in it 10 seconds though they're winding down Matt Tozzi and the Jackets and the Vikings will play for these shot.
They got better Hurry.
He's got three point range lob from downtown was off the mark with a follow up flight goal That's it for quarter number 124 to 38 ball is it.
We'll be right back right after this.
Funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following you're watching the NCAA basketball championships on TV.
We welcome you back to the Macon cineplex.
They're going to look at the calendar yellow jackets cheerleaders.
You know it's the Utah Vikings up by 11 as we get ready for the quarter, Calhoun's got to make East Hall play half court defense, make them go from weak side to strong side, strong side, back the weak side, make them have to shift some of their legs back up in the quarter with the ball.
It's a pass.
So nice job in there.
Too strong on the way in by Roberson.
It'll go back and back.
They're fighting for it in Calhoun.
It's a good hustle on the back court back here.
Bring it back across.
That is Higginbotham number 42 with it several out of all guys handle that 1a5 ten sophomore with it being double teamed right now, trying to get it out of there.
And yes, nice ball movement inside.
Baxter lays it in.
He can score He can score.
Dave Casey Baxter with eight points today.
He's the guy that was absolutely exhausted after that game with Randolph giving it his all.
Here's Kazee back in it is a must locate him in the half court set he gets his feet said put it in the books Mark Kazee for three and the lead is now 12 Baxter with it being double team Yeah get it over and a second clutch Giannis at the basketball number 20 Look again size pass move at this time of night on blocks Wow Bosa showing a little bit of a little bit of the pressure on the defensive end there But look here he took his inside he and it went over his outside shoulder so the body never touched him.
That's an excellent block mark, of course, six foot three, the full back there coming off the screen here, foul, inbounds, double, get it in and a near turn over that time as got a hand out He's nearly got it out of there.
Calhoun of course entering this state as the 10th ranked team and a collision course the huge that's revival right there.
He draws the foul.
He starts getting a little bit of foul trouble here.
That should be their seventh team foul.
Now that stops the clock.
And now Calhoun has luxury.
It kind of chip at this lead with at the back run so Seth Vining looking on now in the second half 17 foul on Kevin Anderson that time that's his first so hardly at the line A 56% free throw shooter would be six points all game there you see his numbers and the first two right in there Jacob stands still shooters and old old school set shot You knock it down and just the second one to go as well.
Nice.
Good.
Five points for Hartley.
Ten point game, six and a half to play in the first half.
He's tall back on the attack oh five he has it knocked away or momentarily Edwards fighting for four still loose and like he's come out of there with it though Sean Foster in the 24 with and getting a handle on it finally Foster behind his back here.
This is our system.
We call it a little four on seven Look at these jacket fans countering also with a pretty good sized crowd today.
I mean, did that throw that arm out?
I've got Baxter on him there at the top.
Just a Smith coming in a little punch on the perimeter caught a nice I of selling that last foul too and he'll bring it across sneaks into the corner bounce back out three point shot that time he's drawn to John Robbins looking for the home run ball there I can see inside there's where nice pass is it back out in the three Is that something he says by the way even though Smith it's a shot that's a that was all set up on an inside outside action the defense just cannot rotate fast enough for cover.
Justice Smith For the Trey and it's 30 to 17 Robinson with it just seems like he doesn't go back doesn't not play momentarily one of the three that Thomas Roberts testifies that some of the other little on off the rhythm they're going to look at a three point shooting and it's tough and you shoot 50% from the free throw from the three line.
It's makes it awful tough.
It's like shooting 75% from the field.
Now we want to hear, oh, that was shot by that's to me, it's an exciting matchup all day long.
Two nice offensive players.
Now we're going to find out on the floor of the Yellow Jackets, a lot of talk things over.
It's like it's a 32nd timeout again.
DEADLINE for entries in the Georgia Natural Gas Trueblue Scholarship has been extended to April 16th states and during the games for information on nominating a deserving male and female student athlete in true blue scholarship from Georgia, this natural gas experience after 22 seasons was Calhoun.
But right now the jackets trail 30 to 17 and the matches that typically defensive pressure a little bit as well.
Foul trouble, though, they've got 18,000, so they've got to watch out.
But for set play to Causey Road, it is a two man game.
They're being aware of arms where a pretty good looking player as well.
He's averaging around around 13 points a game passing the ball extremely well this year, 35 personnel last fell on number 30 who has checked in the ball game is six five junior where wherewith the basketball trying to make a move one on one who had it knocked away and now Baxter running the floor on the other end price a little higher up high Oh the tip won't go and the Vikings with it might want to pull that one back out didn't have the numbers and mark ozone for three the blackouts Great blackout Nice job no second chance opportunities super job by Edwards becoming a faster a little off the mark there and the ball is back over rebounding you want to find your man, establish contact, hold that contact for it and go get the ball.
They're going to look at the earlier game from this afternoon.
It was Taylor County, of course, winning the championship over Buford in class-A with 239.
Matt Tozzi on the other end of the mark that time, would he have a whistle?
Well, he does a nice job of keeping their body between the opponent in the ball.
39 seconds personal justice.
This is something to tell him.
He has to be happy with the tempo of the game.
He started off in a fever pitch, but now it's slowed down a little bit and now the clock is stopped and you're able to see some free throws are getting better looks in their offensive sets and they're running when they want to run.
We talked about Calhoun, of course, beating Randolph play, but he's tall also beating Wilkinson County, who was, of course, the state's class champion the last two years in a row.
So they also knock off pretty good team, his first first class bunch of kids.
Wilkinson is beaten by four in the Causey brothers to bonds of 47 points in that ballgame.
That was a fantastic ballgame.
3217.
Not a lot of scoring in the last couple of minutes.
Both teams trying to find the offensive edge.
We saw certainly not gunshot from outside as cheek cheeks pass kicks it out.
The shot off the mark.
And we'll reset, though, once again.
A second chance opportunity speaks this time lays it in himself.
Hey, you've got to stop this in the Senate races.
Get it out of the middle of the floor.
Six points for Derrick Cheeks and a traveling call.
It'll go right back.
Take a look at that one more time with the left hand.
Yeah, well, he's got to use that right on that side.
Look at it and get blocked.
Great.
Ball him in.
They'll create the shot cheeks with it up top once again working 345 left in the first half and from outside the shot by Smith I was in and out of there and Calhoun brings it down.
They've got it.
If you can rebound and play good defense, you'll be in in a lot of games.
And Calhoun has shown that today.
Chris Edwards, 32, with it right now down to the hands of Baxter.
Jesse Baxter working up top against Mark Darcy in the corner, Scott three point range short and again skipped down there and he hardly pulling the trigger that set the ball fighting back for 3 minutes now.
EVANS Nice shot that time by Kevin Anderson He's got five just missed this guy on the other end Got an answer he's got great double penetration You've got to get that ball out of the middle of the floor and force it to the midpoint to test the shot and go get the rebound.
Baxter in double figures he's got 1035 to 19.
The Vikings have opened up that lead to 45 to go in quarter number two, nearly knocked away that time, though, Mark Barnes is trying to go behind the back, lost the handle on it and up and running on the Yellowjackets and Hartley will lay it in Kelly Hartley with 7 to 4 point play in the two that he didn't get here On the turnovers he scored They're excited to talk about it.
It's the 32nd time with two and a half to go in quarter number two and Calhoun will start to fall behind.
He's tall, win the lead, but then the jackets and start to come back a little bit.
But what how that's happening is Calhoun's doing a nice job on the defensive end of the floor limiting East in a one shot cluster rebounding.
If you can rebound the basketball, you will always be in contention fighting right there.
Of course, you know, this is a city ten times, but only their second trip to the actual championship game and they're trying to make the most of it this year.
After last year's disappointing loss to Mitchell Baker is a very nice program.
Fans are certainly fired up.
19 fouls for East Hall, just four for Calhoun in the Making Center Flex in Macon, Georgia.
They've run a lot of slants and bring you all the action.
Halftime.
We'll have a recap of the first game from this afternoon.
Scott Cosby once again knocking down another shooting ahead.
Oh, yeah.
Come to the ball is collision there this time guys coming together for Calhoun up with it That's Hogan with a 37 not for another chiefs running with the six all the way though and the whistle is going to draw south as well will never stop.
The basketball cheeks is able to go from this in line to that in line without being contested.
You got to get that ball out of the floor, make him kick it to the side.
Well, 12, you are going to be called on to leave Hartley.
So cheeks at the line.
It's the first 52% free throw shooter and once again, just a missile check and freestyle against a breather and we'll look at cheeks sticking around his arm so cheeks now with eight if you have great guards and people who can handle the basketball, you're going to be in contention.
Frank Dill checking in number 50.
So saw there for the jackets.
You don't want that foul in 93 feet away from the basket.
And I'll go back down to the other end really like such a pass here it's going to be second on cheeks Bless your father best player Now he goes blind.
Knock down these two.
Now Baxter is sitting right around 70% off.
This was this year.
And so some drops.
Calhoun, You get this thing to 15 and down.
They're going to be right in his bottom.
So he's got a dozen.
Baxter Once again with the big game, as we figured, he does a little bit of everything and he's trying to keep Calhoun in this 139 to 23 under 2 minutes to go.
That's Cosby with an up top now over the six speed guarded by Baxter Smith was outside Calhoun going to two three zone matching up a little bit out of it like a high school basketball so they can take as much time as they like with it.
Time again, taking it back out there.
Knocked away by Kelly Bartley the back hands the Vikings good strong move by Tavis where he'll be at the line against any zone you want to do a few things one you want to have dribble penetration.
You want to have man movement make bombs at many ball movement.
You want to screen the slides at the zone.
He's right there.
Teach was able to get it into a gap truck, drove it in there and kicked it to where the pressure was coming from.
Nice job where it looked at six foot three.
This is first possible checking right back in the ballgame, as will number 22.
That's Kevin Anderson, just like the first game with Taylor County.
He's tall.
He's very easy play, about 8 to 9 guys and three guys out of ten double figures on the year that one goes to wear.
So one of two on that trip come in at 12 left and quarter number two receiving that pass with your press office you want to receive the ball above the second marker on the lane if you get any lower than that, the defense can use the baseline in the sideline as a defender.
And again, one defender can be three or two can be four.
He above that second marker.
This is the Baxter.
He'll pull up and hit consistently.
His school day factor was 14 here in the first half and this time a turnover and we're going to have a whistle on four LED got it to 15 the clock is stopped with a chance to go back to the line 31.
The first person that's going to be the first on Blake Vandiver, who is come on in the coach wanting to Baxter at the line, creating points and opportunities right now he does a nice job.
He puts himself in positions to be successful once again, right around 70% on those free throws and he hits there.
He's sitting right around 60% from the floor.
That's amazing and strong, though.
A lot of those eight or 8 to 10 footer layups, off transition.
So, yeah, look at that.
There's wherewithal back on him right now A little bit of a press by the jackets as they pass nice the pass on to the end to the inside action again don't stand cut hard to the top of the rim you get a lay up every time Nice job by where where makes it 42 to 27 in favor of himself back on the other end now knocked away by where he's back defensively keeps it alive off his foot So you look at bills he had it knocked away.
He never brought the ball down.
Keep it in above and go straight up.
Goes through the contact.
He gets the three point play.
Put it on the ground.
Some little guys play Robbins trying to sneak it in there to Baxter, but not the way it'll stay with the jackets.
But Calhoun, as we mentioned, of course, beating Randolph and nearly twice as many done here.
We're going to watch this if I get it right back, go back on the other end.
And dishes inside the pass.
Believe Charlie for three off the last and we're back and running on the other end is foul whenever you pass anybody going up the floor.
Dave, you got to understand they're still in the play.
They're behind you.
So they didn't go out and get a popcorn there behind you.
They're coming.
So you got to be cognizant of the fact anybody you pass bringing the ball up the floor, they're coming behind you.
Take it to the side and use the sideline to block them off.
We're going to look at Blake Van for number 30.
Checking out of the game.
Number 50.
Derek Jones has checked in for his two others.
We're at the line once again.
It's all a force 29 and two coming in this ballgame at 26 and four.
Both teams going at it for the first time this year, just going out of reach.
And sixth jackets with it.
But seven 6 seconds surpass ask not for anything Baxter And that's down It came close but it wouldn't have counted anyway.
And our score at the half 42 to 27, you saw Vikings from half are leaning over the Calhoun Yellowjackets.
Nice cut, nice backdoor cut.
And they're going to look at a shot by Baxter.
He has really been the story here in the first half.
You never want to stand always move create an angle off the move because if you stop spread, throw it down the floor.
Daniel Sargeant is standing by with Coach Second year.
Now Georgia has to offer this 15 to Barry Sanders.
He got even more in the second half to make them slow down and play your type of game.
We're not going to slow them down.
That's not their style.
They're going to play fast no matter what We try to do.
Okay.
Thank you.
Good luck in the second half.
All right.
There you have it, 42 to 27 or at halftime.
Stories tall on top will take a timeout.
I'll be right back.

Let's go downstairs now to Daniel Sargeant.
Hello, Daniel.
I am here with Billy Porter, his hometown high school.
And tell me how excited you are to see your team doing so well this year.
We have just had a fantastic year.
Our coaching staff and our kids have done a great job and I'm just so proud of them.
The whole community is just behind them.
It's been great.
And this is the first time that you've made it so far in a very long time.
Is this the beginning of a rich basketball tradition for your school?
Well, we've always had rich basketball tradition.
This is just the first time that we've ever gotten to the Final Four.
We've had we've won 20 plus games the last four or five years in a row.
So we're we're expecting continuation of this and years to come.
And how exciting would it be for you to win this?
Oh, it was just I can't even explain how exciting it would be.
Actually, a lot of these kids were on our championship baseball team last year and Joe Joe in another one and the following year would just be amazing.
Thank you very much and good luck to you.
Lucky you guys start high.
Thanks a lot, Daniel.
Big day of basketball here in Macon.
It's been incredible.
It's been a biking day so far.
Buford Wolves loss to the Vikings, 5839 in the first game.
The coming up is the triple-A championship Westover taking on Mitchell Baker that'll follow this double championship right here on TV.
Of course, the teams are warming up for the big game.
The Patriots there you see warming up right there on the on the court as we continue our halftime festivities here from Macon.
We've got big games coming up later on as well.
Darren.
He takes on Mays at 7:00 tonight and then the 830 game features Savannah and Brett Moore.
Let's Go downstairs now to Danielle.
Hi, I'm here with Dr. William Sloan, the principal of these Hall High school.
You have a great fan turnout.
Tell me a little bit about the support that your basketball team has had.
You still, high school has always had a huge fan support base.
Well, a lot of adults who've been graduates of East Hall High School, they just keep coming back to our ball games and we probably a regular game have as many former graduates as we do our own kids.
And so it's just a great tradition that he's told us before the basketball program.
And you mentioned to me earlier that three members of your basketball team are also straight-A students.
And tell me about how they are role models for some of the younger children that might be coming up and going to East Hall High School.
Well, three of our young men do make straight A's in the classroom and make great S.A.T.
scores, I think is a wonderful message to the young kids.
You can be a great athlete and you can be a great student and do it in the classroom as well as on the basketball court.
And three of these kids are prime examples of that.
One of may go to an Ivy League school to play ball.
So I encourage all kids to do it in the classroom as well as do it on the basketball court.
Now, you guys were so close last year, you made it to this game.
So is this the year that you guys are really expecting to take it home?
We would certainly love to.
We came down last year.
Mitchell Baker probably had the best basketball team in the state last year and they play with us pretty good.
And also our kids have dedicated themselves to come back this year and try to win it all this time.
And we've got and we've got a good chance.
You never know.
Calhoun is a really good basketball team and number 40 for them is outstanding.
And, you know, we're just we hope and pray for two more quarters like the last two and maybe we'll win for.
Thank you very much and good luck to you.
Back to you, Jim.
I thank you, Daniyal.
And of course, he's tall with the lead 4227 at the half.
Go back downstairs to add Dave Gardner and Phil Hansen.
Okay, guys.
All right.
Thanks, Jim.
Again, a very exciting first half, but one dominated mainly by the Utah Vikings.
Calhoun worked their way back several times, but the Vikings hold the edge here at the break.
Well, he still came out early with a knockout punch, but Calhoun, to their credit, got off the canvas, made their own run, and now they're right back in it with 15 down.
This is a long way from being over.
They just got to come down on the offensive end, run some sets is a quick scores and they should be right back in it.
And take a look at some of the halftime stats there.
You look at the breakdown, of course, 42 to 27 field goals right now.
He's tall, hitting right at 60%.
And that is certainly been the story early on down here.
Not bad, though.
They're over 50.
Exactly.
They're right in it statistically wide.
It's just that early stint where they came down to 17 to 2 is basically where we are right now.
They played them even from the highlights of the first half down.
Of course, with the basketball here, I love the way this kid plays.
Whenever your man has his back foot in the middle of your body, go, This kid backs the moves so well without the ball on the other end.
Of course, the three point shooting of He's tall.
This is where his heart breaks your back.
Just when you think you have them.
They hit a big three and they start scoring in their transition.
Nice dish inside to where that time Go ahead, take a time out.
Again, we're just moments away from quarter number three.
The second half coming up from the make it center play run after this funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following You're watching member supported GPB, your PBS station, bringing you the best.
You're watching the NCAA basketball championships on TV.
And we welcome you back to the Make It Center Flex Live again.
I'm Dave Gardner along with Phil Hanson.
Bring you all the action again, the two eight game right here.
Get ready for half number two.
But before we do, let's throw it down courtside to Daniel Sargeant, coach, a big part of your offense is the defense.
How are you going to ensure that your team maintains the same intensity in the second half?
Well, they just have to do it.
You know, they know that half the game is over and we've got another half to play and we just got wait on the line.
Okay.
Thank you.
Good luck.
Back to you.
All right.
There you have it.
Coach Vining talking about some strategy there and for his freestyle.
What are they going have to do?
I guess are going to keep doing what they've been doing and they're going to win.
Just keep up the pressure dictate the pressure will dictate the tempo in the second half so they can get some quick scores and get some threes in transition.
That's why I've seen this team play the last couple of years and that's how they just crushed people.
You think you're right there on them and all of a sudden bang, bang, they hit two big threes and now you're down ten again.
If you look at the younger Kazee seconds in the hole knocked away that time on the whistle flip side of that bill of course so you've got Calhoun as you use the analogy analogy there the little engine that could and they are a team that played with a lot of heart don't count them out.
They hang around.
And the reason they hang around is because they play good defense like we saw.
We got that charge.
It was a little low, but they got away with it.
However they rebound so well.
Plus they're all able to catch it Pivot Pass dribbling through that trail and they all handle the ball extremely well.
Matt Barnes has got to be careful.
I believe he's playing with 3000 block of Austin back in the ring.
That's John Roberts with it over two.
Hardly.
No.
Back up top.
I'm trying to pick up the pace here a little bit.
They're going to put it on the three.
Oh, that's I'm asking you a handle on it.
And the team that he said he's chasing.
And then in the final practice, I don't agree with that.
And they got to understand they're playing in the state final here.
I mean, all he was doing was standing up Denno don't agree with that.
So he got hit in the head there.
Then he got slapped on one on Mark cause he's playing hard going for the ball.
I don't have a problem with that play.
Even unless he said something that part of the text and you know, they're playing the state finals here for the Calhoun fans, certainly not happy about that one.
His mark on the technical.
I don't blame Coach Tucker to be upset by this both and they have the ball.
You're right.
This is the championship.
Yes he did Sometimes he got two stars and he saw the space.
It's a physical game, though.
Exactly right.
I mean, they're playing so loud here.
Unless he said something, which I doubt he did, then I look at the tech, but it's not you know, he just stood up and maybe looked at him nose to nose at the letter and now driving the ball.
Oh, that one a little off the that off the side of the backboard.
We're at it.
Take it away and put it back up there.
And he's going to draw the foul.
He cannot do is get frustrated and lose the composure.
They just have to relax.
That play is done with let's just come down and run our offense.
Defensive sets certainly survive as we're at the line of it.
Six three Center.
He had a big first half in double figures.
He said two nice ball games in a row.
On the defensive end offensive glass that went in there rattling home where a 57% free throw shooter and hits both.
And that's the thing.
So when I get the job done 46 to 2719 point ballgame down with it being pressured by six into the corner thought about the three momentarily drives baseline now back out Nice pass but it works the ball around well from outside that one won't go for Roberts and a fight underneath jump ball we go back to Calhoun Kevin Anderson fighting for threes to all but the jackets maintain possession Robbinsville inbound Look it inside of nearly knocked away the shot clock follows Oh it won't go stop right there but he's he went under the basket wouldn't go that one to fall and out of bounds just needs to bring that ball off the dribble that really the pass was a really open just to take it They really didn't stop him just go north and south and so you get stopped substitution Aldis Jackson Lance number 22 back into the game class a63 senior and shot to pull up nice offense again a one for high set where they had four guys on the foul line extended and their running backs dropped the top screen Chris Edwards for the shot There is a long one but a foul though.
Well, you never want to do that.
You never want to solve the jump shooter.
That's a cardinal rule.
Now you get in three shots and at the free throw line uncontested and look at it.
Robin's being called for it and Bosa at the line gets the first, but it won't go over there.
Out another one.
We saw his numbers.
He's got ten and you get rebound in position.
You must get your hands above your opponents And I'm going to say 2a3 from the line on that trip from Markazi at 24 in the semifinal game against Wilkinson that went off the mark by Baxter.
Calhoun's only get one shot.
His tall is doing a nice job on the defensive glass nice ball movement that time by the Vikings and then knocked away and you never want to jump the pass stay on the ground Anderson Chiefs and underneath draws the foul now got to be on Baxter five on one Every time you jump to pass, you're in big trouble.
This is the defense that just you can't go anywhere.
You can't slide.
You're going to come down.
Gravity's going to take offense six hits and he's got nine.
They're going to look at Justin Smith checking in for the Vikings, 14 fouls for Calhoun here in quarter number 3 to 4 East tall cheeks with the second one, it's in and out of there.
Baxter runs the floor.
Nice spin, and he puts it in there with the look down.
He's got nice body control.
Now they need to stop right here.
Don't try to get it all back.
It wants to see.
You can come back in the game defensively, not offensively.
You must stop your opponent.
6 minutes to go in the third 3931 set play off the double screen for just to sneak Marshall takes it back out baseline other side now and the shot short Oh nice by we're coming here with the follow looking still to be waved off it's going to be caught on surveillance It was a nice pass by chiefs number 20 is it Anderson the corner just didn't knock it down and take it away.
A turnover and a shot by Smith from three point range off the mark, but they keep it alive.
He's tall with second and third opportunities today, doing a nice job on the glass and the corner Now back out Smith Short balance finally out of there with it but he looks like he's not getting a lot of second chance opportunities on there In there you look at the turnovers even right now at 11, he saw, though, capitalizing a little bit better with 6 to 3 on points off those turnovers.
Calhoun still playing hard.
I like that again.
We got a whole host of time here and there just keep grinding it out.
Good things are going to happen.
Second, personnel serving as the third team foul Now on Calhoun Smith will take a seat LBS the hard court there Calhoun will inbounds from underneath their own goal the up screen there it is and not the way you want a bounce pass into the post of you air pass they got a hand there they can go low certainly a lost art the bounce pass and it was a shot.
It was tipped nice block by cheeks.
I don't know.
It keeps it alive in a fight in there.
Logan This is out of there, though.
Logan Unable to get it.
Go.
And now he's tall, back and running over him.
A little athletic punch inside Aussie set up top was knocked down from way outside.
No good And now back on the other end.
Hardly got a behind the D there but nice hustle by the younger Kazee to get back in transition That's kind of like fool's gold you think it's open and you throw it ahead and you really don't have the numbers you're making.
The difficult catch dribbled it up and then run an offensive play, make them play defense when they have to go from the strong side to this weak side, back to the weak side, back to strong side.
18 point ballgame.
You saw Sterling control Calhoun.
This was a shot.
You can score.
See Baxter, he's over 20 on the afternoon.
They're back to 15 again.
That's what they need.
Antetokounmpo three point shooting and back on the other end.
Nice job there by Matt Kazee.
The east will not go away I mean just when you think you're right in there they hit a big shot like a layup or a three and just breaks your backs more pressure but jackets break it get it across get inside Baxter underneath lays it in and the foul kind of you So make Baxter creating opportunities once again using his body so well Look today he put keeps his body between the opponent in the ball He can ball you in the man's formula in his three successful at that it the three point play he's able to turn to get his shoulders around people really moves well faster averaging over 20 points a game he's got more than that right now 24 clock winding down 337 to go and quarter number three looks bad.
Ware lays it in there and it goes Nice isolations for the big fella in the middle Survivor's where he's got 14 problems with it A three point shot is a little less he's leaning all the time now Nice job by Hogan in the brown Hogan six to junior but he's got his arms and he's about six six under the corner Yes he is.
Oh underneath quick on the inbound draws the foul He's got to capitalize.
Got to make a three point play there you have two schools that sets bone on that ball shin high and above and his take anybody else for the ride We'll look at numbers I was at almost four points a game this is on the first now when I was saying here on the rebound you got to get your hands above your opponent's shoulders.
Also, you want to stagger your feet.
Your feet are together.
You can't jump and ball hits good on the second 5338 Calhoun hanging around trying to make a run.
But he's tall, keeping him at bay right now in front of you.
That one knocked away.
Nice job hard.
And he came down with it.
They give him a cross.
That's Edwards.
Well, nice pass inside, open underneath.
Oh, they miss it.
And another easy basket there.
They got to capitalize on those two.
He's looking for the contact.
He just got to go up through it.
Don't worry about the contact.
Three from an Aussie too strong.
Baxter keeps it alive for the jackets and now they run with it.
Baxter pulls up off the top of the rim, follows his own shot, and it's real foul.
He reminds me of a poor man's Steve Alford.
He doesn't play for Indiana.
He could do such a nice job of keeping his body under control.
You know, all these guys will be flying at him and he just leans into them, gets the contact somewhat early on, an effort follows his own shot.
It's a lost movie without the basketball.
This is a guy that we were talking about was completely exhausted after last week's game against Randolph, showing a lot of heart.
He did everything but drag the bus in that game.
They ran at him 1012 to 26 points for Baxter on the afternoon.
Make it to 27.
He's a winner.
He is a big time winner.
He's determined to keep the jackets in it.
But this is great players in this tournament.
He's tall of five, doesn't look at inside to wear a jump ball called underneath you says that Calhoun is just hanging around enough they can cut it now to ten again don't try to get it all back at once.
They're right back in this thing.
A lot of nice inbound passes there.
That's Anderson who gets it to go.
You got to give these tough credit.
They just keep coming at you.
You let down one time, they're going to score.
Oh, now at inbound after it was knocked away and they get it in.
That's Edwards getting across knocked out.
I saw by Anderson nearly came up with a turnover.
Anything in the air they're going to get and keep it down low 5541 states he will mark the corner.
Oh great.
Pass inside to the bucket whenever you're me.
His back foot is in the middle of your body.
Take one hard step up and clutch backdoor Create an angle off the move.
If you don't create an angle off move, you're going to create space in the defense.
We'll shoot that, get nine points to Hartley back of him.
And that's Anderson.
He throws, Oh, Anderson, you just broke them again.
Kevin Anderson with a Trey is a big shot, Anderson averaging over six points a ballgame.
He's got a lot more than that.
Today is in double Oh, man Oh offensive foul going to be called on the jackets That's a big turnover Mark Cosby will check back in for he's tall.
I just think if Calhoun can get this thing between ten and Sub10, they're right in it.
But to Paul's credit.
Right?
When it gets close, they turn up the heat a little bit and jump it up to 15, two, 13 to 17 one.
He's going to throw up and hit it the way they twisted his ankle.
Dave came down on a foot.
He's limping and it's down on the floor.
That may be big.
I hope he's all right.
So, Mark, nailing the Trey there.
He's got 14, but he's going to have to come out of the ball game and Smith will quickly check back in to help it.
If he did twist it bad, I hope it twisted to the outside because it's not as bad a sprained as the ones that twist to the inside.
Well, he's going to be attended to over there, but he got up on his own and left off of medical reserve.
Good, good looking inside.
Oh, the lob.
And there the back gets rid of it and it's in there.
Nice job that Seth Bowen with the bucket and look for young Matt Causey to step up now that his brother's on the sideline getting retakes.
He's tall You had it knocked away there just isn't back outside Anderson for three that is a big shot 13 points and a baker's dozen for Anderson.
He's hit two big, big threes, 40 seconds left in the third.
Nice night for 45, partly with it, the reverse.
Let's go back there, tries to get it in there, but a whistle but Calhoun may want to try to do against the east call pressure is have Baxter be the second receiver so he'd say he's coming to the ball so he doesn't have to mess with bringing it up 94 feet maybe saved him a little bit his conditioning, as we said earlier in the broadcast, I believe he's going to be a key so closely over there on the sideline being taped up.
You're going at the line.
This is first, I'm glad he's not there to get back in the game.
You need here is the second for Barney gets it to go for 14 points for Seth Bowen 6446 He's tall, slows the tempo a little bit Master cheeks with it top at the point screening of all spots are going to start a play for the last shot.
Calhoun then knocks it away two on nice pass inside goal is that bounce pass I'm going love John Robins with the hoop and a turnover at the Oh man on middle man unbelievable down here trying to work the way back into it but he's still on top 64 to 48.
We'll be right back where they can sit up one right after this.
Funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following You're watching the NCAA Basketball championships on TV 6448.
He's tall on top of Calhoun.
Let's drill down to Danielle.
You talk over Ozzie, Stephanie Simmons, Angel after hitting a huge three late, late in the third quarter, he's back in the game.
It's just a twisted ankle and he's going to be fine for the rest of the afternoon.
All right.
Thanks, Danielle.
The updates are on Mark Causey.
Thank you.
Press for opening up the fourth quarter now, fourth and final quarter.
And Blake Cowherd slicing to Slater off the mark to follow by Baxter.
Oh, can't get it to go.
We've seen that a couple times today.
Some easy shots missed underneath by the jackets and they can ill that here in the fourth got to capitalize on those and those chippies Matt Causey from the corner off the mark Nice rebound Mark so lost the handle on it He goes back in the ballgame but lost the handle out of bounds.
So Calhoun with it he saw going for the knockout punch here.
They're trying to put a little pressure on them.
If you put turnovers, you look at John Robbins running the floor and a three point shot too strong that time.
Once again, just one chance on offense and that's all due to the press screens.
He was open, but it's a quick shot.
You didn't go in.
Now you got to come back down, play defense, try to get the ball out.
Look it inside is there for the bucket.
Obama square with another one.
He's got 16 now.
A little bit of pressure once again.
He's trying to get it out of there, though.
Chris Edwards with his best it a nice job of getting open there whenever your man face guards you.
I cut drive right out here to pop out the pressure outside He is all wide open underneath.
Nice pass.
Just get him out.
I think you get some layups.
But again you must convert when they press, because if they're pressing, they're going to give up something.
So when they move and shift and shake, you've got to capitalize on that.
Seth Bowen with six points today Cross-court Pass driving baseline dishes it out.
This is the state championship.
These Vikings and the Calhoun Yellowjackets look for East Harlem.
A little continuity here.
The beginning of this league 25 on the corner.
It's their three point shot that time by Anderson he's come up big today made three big threes 16 points for him Nice pass running Oh inside the way another foul a couple sets ball and Parkinson is back to foul that time going to be on March 1st he got knocked down these free throws It's going to be 18 fouls on He's tall and it's you look at Justin Smith second in and bone two down so a three point play for Seth Bowen since Tucker's going on offense defense here when he scores he's bringing his defensive players.
You're going to find him bringing his offensive.
6 minutes to go Vikings limit slow down the tempo a little bit here and now the clock is now for some of the opponents.
But he also thinks that he's pretty content right now.
He's running a few seconds off.
Well, with it, outside of your respects, you don't want to come facing here games due the fact that it dries your sweat and you get out of your rhythm, causes some power wear, pulls up from outside, too strong that time because he got the shot They learn it you know they're taking an 18 footer as opposed to the ten footer where he operates so well down low just to maintain possession.
They're looking inside, body in trouble.
We'll just back out.
Not a lot of room down here.
Plus he has very good This is Mark Bolden.
A very good court awareness in the corner because he's all being patient here during the five minute mark.
Kelly doesn't need to panic.
There are like Skid Row, the number 14.
You had a moment here where it gets rid of it, just Smith, Johnson, Anderson and the pull up off the mark there.
But it kicks in.
So that's what you're seeing here.
Then you got him taking a fadeaway three and there's no he backs down on the backside Chris Gilbert on He's tall with the bucket.
They're going to look at Edwin Higginbotham of Calhoun checking in, but a timeout on the floor for 48 to go, 71 to 53.
He's tall, leading Calhoun.
Well, just a reminder, folks don't miss Georgia's only statewide high school sports and academics program prep sports.
Plus, Saturday, 911, right here on TV.
We're going to look at the yellow jackets in the huddle pod.
Certainly becoming a factor.
But first, we're trying to settle on hard all day long.
They just can't quite seem to get a run going.
Exactly.
And when they do get a run, Anderson is coming down, hitting threes, and then they're giving up quick little chippies down, low off misses.
You just can't hear it.
30 seconds listening to these two, although they were looking to make something happen.
All right.
Defense was down 4554.
They will go to him.
He got to go yet again.
They're going to employ that same strategy.
They're going to try to double team Baxter when he has the ball so he can get rid of it and make somebody else on Calhoun Beach.
If you stop playing for the state championship here after falling last year, they were the runner up, got back to this ballgame 29 to 2.
It very impressive expected to be here.
They were number two in the state coming in and probably expected to play.
Randolph placed him.
It was number one, but Calhoun took care of them, won five in the semifinals.
And here are the yellow jackets.
They did a nice job in that semi.
They went to a two, three zone which allowed them to get their win back and then slowed down.
Randolph Playing Randolph play could never regain the rhythm of the game, and since Grant's in Double-A it was a and an shot by Baxter.
Say guy you get this guy the crack light of a door he's going to smirk it.
He can really shoot it.
49 points for Casey Baxter.
That's a big shot there And he's one of those 15 to play Illini.
The man to man Anderson, gets rid of it, go outside.
Not much of an outside switch here from outside of the box, but down by Hartley, you get a rebound, you return to the outside.
Don't turn inside with the rest.
All the traffic is get away from that and were knocked out of Baxter's hands.
But luckily for the old Yanks there again, your teammate, the man behind you, is very dangerous.
He got to know where he is.
Good defensive pressure by East Hall and Smith over there by sports rivalry.
Is there pressure is making Calhoun not look at the basket there.
They're too worried about catching the ball and pulling it away.
Look at these three point numbers, ten of 21 least four for 13 for the jackets.
And oh, nice inside that hotly tipped.
And so this is something locked up the ball the other way and bonzie lays it up and in Matt with ten points himself that's kind of a silly foul you know it doesn't stop the clock and give them a chance to go to the line Grant He may not have bunting much, but you really want defensive back.
And here's a look at that last one Take the ball away from his body.
Got it up high.
He's a scorer.
He's going to be fun to watch over the next couple of years, man.
Of course, just a sophomore already following in his brother's six ducks, is likely to be the team leader in the next couple of years of this program.
Very scrappy.
Plays hard.
Jason Baxter We're talking about playing hard.
He stayed there all day long and he just want to go there.
30 points on the afternoon for K.C.
Baxter.
He's Really keeping the jackets in as well.
You take it, Xavier whistle, you take K.C.
Baxter, you have nice dark tan and winning without a doubt.
My goodness.
It keeps the cornerstones of from the brothers out there on the floor.
The great tournament in the corner.
Nice pass.
Oh, Anderson, alone off the rim, Baxter with it and running.
He's got some open floor in front of him and he lays it in.
Oh, the follow was quite good, but nice job by Higginbotham it alive Now a three point shot is very nice as a super defensive play by Matt Cousins.
He ran in front of Baxter but Baxter couldn't get his feet set.
Three Point shot for Kelly Barkley.
He's got 12 now.
It's two and a half to play against trying to win this one.
Oh, open whoop.
Derek Cheeks takes it in his cheeks with 11 and answers right back.
Still a 14 point game now.
You don't want to get in a big three point contest with these guys banging inside.
Then trying to steal it off the inbound.
Then you may want to think about fouling.
If you start shooting threes off the bat.
Now you don't go in.
Now you're forced to file.
Yeah, Jackson laughs with the around here.
Gets it to go right there right in this thing 7560 34. game with under 2 minutes to do this and the Dallas fans want it back for violation we've got to get the ball in his hands basketball and he went back for it and he didn't just pass it Barcelona got the number one loss in this league on this championship just to go and a timeout on the floor 32nd time out 146 to go 7563.
He's tall leading Calhoun right now the jackets fighting for everything right now but he's really doing a good job of keeping that lead right around 18, 19 points, 3 seconds in two years.
This a 63 coming in with the Crosby brothers.
And Anderson, he's tall.
He's got the luxury that all four of those guys handle the ball very well.
And where his ability with his ability to pass gives them another outlet.
Calhoun, with 63 points has reached their average.
So you don't want a foul in this case.
It doesn't behoove you to do so because that just stops.
The clock now puts their best player again on the line to chip away at this lead.
And this is a minute 43 last time crazy things have happened sheets to that last foul Baxter at the line and he gets into the to a 32 points looking to add to that see if Calhoun Xs with them off the foul line and the second time 33 points he's accounted for right around half of what Calhoun put up on the scoreboard today.
Finally he goes the Tar Heels is going to stay on the top of the Bill Cosby with it down his knees on the floor, Last touch by his ball.
This doesn't pay a little rush.
He's going to relax and just keep doing what they've been doing.
And don't worry about the clock like it's the first minute 25 of the game.
126 A nice move by Edwards dribbling going on there.
And the follow up is three point shot.
And you may think fouling here it's there for Baxter He's got 36 that might be some kind of a playoff record right there.
I don't know anything about him just you got to stop clock running out one at a minute Time is only have five fouls you got a foul trying to get the turnover really going to try to work the clock a little bit here getting the place up and what a great pass and a foul going to be called on faster looking at the foul a couple more times to get him to go to the line.
They're looking for the turnover there.
I guess so.
But two, so we're going to find a foul in the tradition.
About 20 seconds to go because you're fighting the clock.
Good time out here by Coach Tucker.
And we'll talk things over 38 seconds to play.
He's tall, up 7567 against Calhoun, making his first trip to the state title game.
First day realignment has certainly changed things up a little bit.
We'll see in game three today in our Triple H contest.
Mitchell Baker, a team that has owned this Double-A state championship the past two years, they're having to jump up, but the move obviously didn't hurt them very much.
Tell you what, as we talked to Jim Early the broadcast, they turned the state tournament into Mitchell Baker Invitational tournament.
They just make their travel arrangements every year and it feels blessed comes and Jimmy, you know how much this is not going to freak you.
All right.
Are you going to play with your exiting the day side now?
Are you very for the yellow jackets kind of sights and sounds from the Macon Cineplex, You know, the state championship down here on TV.
Look for this deal then you've got to foul immediately.
There is the foul next actually that ball off of Causey.
So turnover that's that's even better for no here you go Look at it coming up championship Mr. and Mrs. the dunk is missed by Fonzi just laid off the glass Calhoun two on one they'll pull up Take the shot.
It's off the back of the iron and out of play.
31 seconds left.
So Edwards didn't need the three.
Just take it.
Make the layup and pressure and probably a quick foul and now a timeout going to be called by He's tall if he scored off a layup there and makes it 6975 now you still have to spend that time out right there Didn't move the three you saw this course their 10th trip to the final four this year but just their second to the actual championship.
Of course, last year was the first trip for coach Seth running and the Vikings for you to look at the view here from the mega cineplex and a lot of fans here.
I tell you what, it seems like every year we pack this place out more and more.
It's getting better and better and it's just a great tournament.
It's a lot of fun.
Everybody should be down here watching it.
It's great to see these kids compete and look at some young fans in attendance today.
We're hoping to make maybe one day be out here on the court because tomorrow the girls basketball lineup just as impressive.
Exactly.
The double play contest will be at Union County and Greater Atlanta.
Christian, 31 seconds in the game.
He's tall, gets it in and a quick foul That's on Brandon Reese getting the foul basket but Mark Cosby at the line and he's the one guy you don't want at the foul line their best shooter.
Exactly.
Now that he makes these two, you don't have to come down and see the three, Bang it inside, get a quick two and then try to get the steal inside.
And he hits the first looks like he saw was really going to run away with this thing early on here.
15 points for Mark Crosby that's down here finding and they're keeping a close especially right here at the end but he's tall with an answer 25 seconds they'll throw this shot off the back of the arc faster, kicks it back out and that he's got a short last touched by Edwards as it goes out of bounds that might have done it 19 seconds left they it in and a quick foul but it's elementary right now the Vikings can get the free throws There's no doubt they will be the state first class move here by Coach Tucker's brain is themselves letting them experience the state tournaments.
It's a real nice gesture.
So player substitutions now for Calhoun get rolling.
Number 14, Chesson and Anderson, Steven Sweat, 16 points for Kevin Anderson.
He's had a big ballgame.
Anderson only averaging run around six points a game, shooting a three today.
And he gets the free throw there.
He's really stepped up for them all game long, ten point ballgame that's positive.
Come off the floor and he comes down faster or at least another Vikings Chris Gilbert's getting in I like that these young guys have been practicing all year and I just experienced the last few seconds of the tournament, Bannockburn Jones and the 30 to 50 also coming in.
The Vikings fans are celebrating Derek Cheeks, number 21, the big game.
Check it out.
He had 11 points.
What a difference a year ago.
So, yes, he's tall up by 11.
Those tiny pokes into the end.
You guys love that town playing their hearts out, especially that man right there with the ball faster.
He pulls up for three off the mark.
That time he's got 36.
Got on the other end.
No good there by Roland and the final 7 seconds.
Take away all that one too strong and too high.
So Calhoun with one last shot but stuck in the matter much.
Does the Vikings feel it?
So Double-A state champions.
What an effort.
Can't take anything away from.
That bunch of guys right here, though, they play their hearts, so you got to love them.
This kid with the ball I take any day of the week and it's certainly been their trademark this year and that is it.
78, 67, the final, the East Paul Vikings, 2000, 2001 Double-A basketball state champions Fozzy and true celebrating multiple guys in double figures today for EA Sports Matt Causey Mark Causey, both in double figures along with Derek Cheeks and Kevin Anderson.
To wear also had a big game inside on the boards as well.
And that was really the whole thing is them being able to kill penalties drives, not allowing them any more than one chance.
And he's told me while making second third opportunities that's what it all boils down to.
Again the pressure from these Paul definitely dictated dictated the tempo of the game, but it's all down for side.
Daniel standing by.
Congratulations, Coach.
Tell me, after dominating so much, things get a little nervous when they pull it in eight right there at the end.
Well we knew Kyle who was not going to quit because they've been playing that way all year.
And we got a little sloppy right there.
The end game, some opportunities, but but they got an excellent club.
I'm just real proud of our team and a statistic.
Our seniors say they've been special all year and it's just been a great group.
After finishing runner up last year, how sweet is this victory today?
It was nice to get here any time.
You know, we played a great matchmaker team last year and and our guys knew we had a chance to get back.
If We played well and that's been on our minds all year.
So we're happy.
We're excited.
Thank you and congratulations to you, Gary.
Have it.
And Coach Seth bonding, obviously happy about the victory there.
He's all state champions.
We'll take a timeout and be right back to the make it center play.
