Live from the center of Plex here in Macon, it's the boys to a basketball championship.
Thomasville the Bulldogs going against greater Atlanta Christian.
The Spartans coming in on a roll.
Hi everybody and good afternoon to Clyde.
Tenant has always my partners, Herb White.
Our pleasure to be bringing you Double-A high school basketball championship action and what a matchup we have the old against the young, different styles, but it should make for an interesting ball game.
It's going to be a good one.
A Greater and a Christian Coach by Eddie Martin.
We all know Eddie.
He's been with championship teams at Norcross, and this Thomasville Club has one of the best sophomores playing anywhere in the country.
Well, let's take a look at the guy you're talking about in a great player, a great shooter.
He is Willie Clayton.
He's about six seven.
He can slash he can play above the rim.
Well, he's going to Argentina in April, playing down there for us team.
And he went over to France last year.
So he's getting a lot of recognition nationally already.
And the Thomasville starting line up looks like this it's got you're a sophomore you see some intermixing.
Three sophomores in that starting lineup along with Holton for Clayton and Carter coach Pat Tillman happy to be here.
Oh, it means a lot.
Not only means a lot to the young kids that we have, but I have four scenes that are playing with.
This is their first time in a state championship game and it means a lot to them and all the to our community as well.
Well, the same story could be said for Greater Atlanta Christian.
Their big guy hits the big guy inside.
That's Malcolm Brogdon.
He's like a64 player and he can play inside, play outside.
He does a lot for this team.
He scores about 20 points a game, gets six and a half rebounds.
He dishes out three or four assists a game.
So he's responsible for a lot of the points this team gets.
Let's go down the starting line up for that end Bo Able Bobby Bear and Mr. Bears mom is here as well you see Brogdon is the star Dawson leads the show Wideman is going to the College of Charleston and Law is the guy that keeps this team together.
Eddie Martin another coach glad to be in the finals.
Oh, well, it's just unbelievable.
I mean, it's it's been, I want to say, 23 years since Jesse has actually had a boy's team play for a state championship finish runner up that year.
And in 1977, 33 years since the last time they went to a state championship.
So to be back in this situation obviously is a big plus.
But, you know, we've come down here to try to win this thing.
We want to finish some business down here tonight.
Well, we'll see who gets the business done.
Interesting.
That's a fun match up.
Some exciting basketball up and down the court.
Let's go to the public address.
ANNOUNCER Here are your starting letters.
Location, class, double AA boys State Championship.
Yeah.
Today's game will have the Thomasville Bulldogs with a record of 24 wins and four losses dressed in red as your visitors on the scoreboard and the Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans with a record of 31 wins and one loss dressed in white as your home team, now have your attention for the starting line.
Up first for Thomasville, Ga.
Number one, a five foot seven softball.
Go see.
Oh, a guard.
Number two, a six foot one.
Senior Fredrick Holton.
At forward number three, a six foot three junior, Justin Ford at center number 24, six foot eight.
Sophomore Robert Carter, Junior at forward number 21, a six foot seven sophomore really closely and tough as nails head coach Benjamin Tillman.
And now for your great, great lineup, Christian Spartans and guard number ten, a six foot three senior Bo able at forward number 20 to a six foot four junior.
Malcolm Brogdon at guard number 25, a five foot ten junior.
Paul Dolson and forward number 33, a six foot five senior, Elliott Lone and then center number 44, six foot seven.
Senior Trent among and great work by the Pistons head coach Eddie Martin.
Sit back, relax and get ready.
The basketball championships are next.
Stop, stop, stop, stop, Stop it.
Some folks suggest that after watching Jon Nelson handle the rock on the camera today, that we need to send him to summer basketball camp.

Welcome back to Macon for the Dunaway Boys High School basketball Championship.
Our guy covering the sidelines this evening, at least this afternoon, Scott Kozlowski.
Got it.
Thank you very much, Stu.
I talked to both coaches just before the game and ask them for their last minute keys.
Here's what they told me.
Coach Barton with Gacy telling me that they're going to try to keep Thomas Phil from getting the ball inside and keeping them off the boards.
Offensively, they've got to be able to handle the press.
But he said the biggest thing is to go right at Thomas, go straight and get the ball inside.
After Thomasville, Coach Tillman told me, It's very easy.
They just need to play hard.
They don't want to deviate from the blue collar style that got him here.
Should be a good one too.
Thanks, Scott.
We'll have the Spartans of Greater Atlanta Christian in those red and white uniforms and of course, the blue ball to Tom.
School in the red.
Get ready.
Here we go.
It should be an exciting and close game as we get ready for them to a boys high school basketball championships controlled by the Bulldogs.
And we are underway and Stuart, nobody has got within ten points of this great Atlanta Christian team at their level this year.
The only game they lost was to a great out of state school and a lot of folks think they could contend for the five eight championship.
But Thomasville Central with a great player and Willie Clayton.
So let's see what they can do early turnover and doing that of Christian's way.
Theresa Aber here as well and I'll tell you how old I feel.
I covered Bobby when he first started with the Michigan Panthers and Bo Aber, whose playing in today's game was one year old when I first met the parents, Gary and all that Bulldogs with pressure Atlanta Christian to the hole up and no good captain why would Rodman want to tap and he will be going next year to the College of Charleston.
So Bobby Crimmins has a good one.
Our old buddy outside bulldogs look for him.
Hitting the range and putting it down is great.
Home sweet looking stroke.
They're up and down both teams showing some backcourt pressures.
We're just underway here for the Double-A high school basketball championship.
Bulldogs are aggressive.
Yeah, they're aggressive and aggressive man to man and one thing about Eddie Martin, coach team, if you remember those Norcross, they're fundamentally sound.
They do everything the right way.
So Thomas Thomasville got to be on their toes as Spartans on a major league roll coming into tonight, this afternoon, going against a tough bulldog man to man up.
Well, it's not wide open.
No good rebound, All good.
And bulldogs will control and run and this could be a wide open run.
Whatever.
Throw up and down we go with the fast break up and good able with a nice left hand and little ball bear gets it on the boy Senior.
His big brother plays football for the LSU Tigers Eddie Martins can't always run the fast break Well that's another thing they do well so Thomasville is going to have to get back defensively Thomasville in that offense trying to look inside Spartans with their zone defense and it works so far going down for it, looking for control.
Break through the hoop gets a beautiful play in hand by Malcolm Brogdon and he is the star for this team.
You'll see a lot of that this afternoon I saw that name Brogdon and of course people that know greater Atlanta Christian basketball are going to remember Cindy Brogdon, one of the great girls players to come out of the state of Georgia and no relation no Brogdon only a junior averaging 20 points a game and being recruited by just about everyone.
I do have to mention this.
A good friend of mine, Jackie Bradford, who was one of the great coaches in Atlanta, helped stuff.
Here's the replay on that.
It helped start the Atlanta Tipoff Club, by the way, and was the executive director tip offs of your start at Greater Atlanta Christian basketball when they first opened and and built the program back then.
So a tip of the hat to Jackie and the know he's happy to see these guys where they are again inside and an easy hoop and early going six five full court pressure Spartans breaking it man underneath open and sometimes the purpose of a president so much purpose they make it they just want to get you in a fast uptempo game and the Spartans so far trying to run it up.
Yeah I don't think it's going to bother Arie.
We'll be ready for that.
But Thomasville didn't quite get position on that play Slid under Lake Elliott.
Well, we'll go to the foul line.
He'll shoot to Senior six, five, ten points a game.
Coach Mark told me before the game he can sort of be the X-Factor in this game doesn't do anything tremendously great just does everything very well.
Second one good.
He struggles with an early three point lead just in the way.
Good to have you with us.
We're going to try to penetrate that Spartan Zone defense.
It extends out.
It's kind of a matchup zone.
They'll play man to man.
Well, they may be playing man to man.
Going to tell sometimes bulldogs with a long three pointer.
They don't mind pulling the trigger.
Why not?
When Holton can shoot it like that, man, he has got a stroke.
He just turned and fired from the dead corner Spartans looking inside, face quick tempo up and doing it.
Nicely done by Elliott Rawls, along with a couple of basket in some foul shots, keeping this game close.
Bulldogs on knees, no good.
I love to see guys who can use the glass.
It's kind of a lost art that you see and a lot of guys on this Spartan team using backboard and we'll have a foul underneath game being called a little tighter by the officials than maybe we saw in Atlanta last night.
There was a play cause you had a lot of a lot of big bodies in those games.
Sometimes you just have to make allowances for that.
So we're just underway.
Ten, eight boys, Double-A, basketball.
Much more action coming your way after this.
Today's games is made possible in part by the following broadcast of this program is made possible in part by the Georgia High School Association.

Use hash tag LB GPB final five you Twitter I don't even text I don't either I got to get in I received texts I heard I don't really cool or so the kids say ten eight.
Well that's you see some of the crowd here it's great crowd so far trying to drag us kicking and screaming into the 21st century.
And Willie Clayton has picked up his second foul, which is going to be big shot for the quarter underneath the guy underneath and no good, but he'll be going to the foul line.
And that is big threat.
Wait a minute.
As we mentioned, boy wonder, the College of Charleston, strong, big, raw boned looking guy, he can probably put on another £15.
There you see water and watch him go up 14 and a half points in a game over eight boards and just a solid fundamental.
Yeah.
He does some of the dirty well he looks like one of those guys you played against.
He stood there all elbows and sharp angles and man, you, you just can't get near him without getting hurt.
Spartans by three but just underway first quarter Bulldogs attacking now and then the man defense by the Spartans and a kid Hey bear for that one little bump with the chest drills Hey trying to go to the hoop here Thomas field yet to get anything in the paint but they've been stroking it from deep within the trigger and can't find any warning.
Just get it in under the clock.
Way outside his home.
No good rebound underneath by Mitchell and he gets the easy two and there you go And we say deep I mean deep that was ten feet out pass to land Nice rebound by Mitchell Bulldogs in a131 zone Spartans attacking with two men up top Got to have a good baseline man when you run on that 131 he's got to be aware of the point guys the toughest job lay outside Brogdon again showing some range that's what happens you can get that wing jumper off that 131 with good passing to the hoop and one and Charles Hayes will go to the line.
Hey Bear picks up another.
He's going to have to go to the bench and nice Ken dribble drive they're calling it tight stoop A lot of these women been called in Atlanta last night, but that's fine as long as you're consistent and you start the game like that and keep it like that the whole game, the players can adjust.
Well, you know, we used to say on the playground, no blood, no foul.
That's how it was last night.
But you're right.
And that's part of the game plan that you always adjust to.
Sure.
How the refs are calling it.
And as long as they're consistent, you're okay.
I had a hard time adjusting.
I find that every game I ever played, I'm really sorry, but that wasn't the refs.
So they're now on the bench and the Spartans will attack up by two Hayes drains a couple, keep it tight, and the Spartans are working it around, trying to be patient on the outside.
Bulldogs very aggressive.
They're extending that zone almost to turnover.
And this is a quick bulldog team.
They are all over the place.
Hayes Red in there, right in front of the man penetrating right in front, a long and almost stripped and without touch.
An amazing quickness comes to the Spartans trying to be patient.
We're almost through with the first quarter this to a championship game Here's the man you've got to watch he has range and what a jumper he has and he can shoot over that zone walking in the turnover.
Do you hate to see that as a coach?
Unforced errors, especially after the zone, but a very aggressive zone.
What goes here is very quick out front.
He's he's getting out there extending the defense and he created that turnover Nice job saw coach Martin trying to direct a little traffic bulldogs with the ball showing some patience of their own that Atlanta stays man to man Good It's our pass good block and the other way we go with Atlanta Christian on the break all the way nice pass up and foul going to the hoop is right in there So that was a good control break everybody for the lanes not textbook fast break they're nice outlet two quick passes Here you go watch this nice block two dribbles the outlet pass two dribbles and another pass.
Nice job.
Elliott Long with a nice gift and a little short.
And his first is Wait it that good rhythm at six seven make a nice forward in that league Bobby Simmons plays in this two at the line still a 1412 game gets the wall on him Nicely done by Hayes Boy he's showing some quickness he's going to take it to the hole Well the guards for Thomas all got a little edge on the quickness and they can get to the rack penetrate so Coach Martin may have to make an adjustment with his defense if they continue to break down his deep groove off staying in that aggressive zone up and running with the alley open.
Nicely done.
Right on the money.
Bulldogs coming back right back and attacking way outside with the three and rattling it in his hometown.
I'll tell you what Holcomb is confident man He wanted that ball and he stroked it as soon as it hit his hands.
Bulldogs with a one point lead.
For the first time in this game.
Working it around.
Courtney still looking inside.
Nice drive, nice reverse and just out with a big chance to get the rebound but can't feed inside.
Very nicely done and pretty easy.
He'll just drive to the win a12 punch.
They have a high level of basketball right now.
Still very very well played.
First 67 minutes, nobody forcing some shots.
You're actually right.
Maybe I spoke a little too soon.
That was the first poor shot we had.
But he had a good look off.
Elliott Long again, aggressive to the hole.
This team, this Atlanta Christian team wants to run with the ball when they've got it.
I mean, they want to get out there and run.
Yeah, I don't know how deep Thomasville Central goes as far as their players, but they're piling up some fouls.
That's the sixth foul on them.
And Willie Clayton already has two, so they've got to do a little more careful with their aggressiveness.
And Coach Tillman told me before the game that they go only six or seven.
Well, that's only a problem then.
Robert Carter, six foot eight, sophomore checks back in for Thomasville.
That's Tilmon, said Temple the game so so important so we'll see.
The Spartan team continues to run well we'll take a little breather and AJ Davis into the game and that Davis in to see the alley oop nice job and greater Atlanta Christian shoots 73% as a team from the free throw line through That's pretty good shooting as a team so you don't want to put him at that stripe all night.
We mentioned 88 Davis coming in.
He's only a freshman.
He's six six.
Dad just happens to be Antonio Davis of some lineage there.
I'm telling you, Antonio is got to be proud.
His daughter last night was on a championship team.
I believe it's Kayla.
She's a freshman, I believe, and a great player.
And now son playing this ballgame.
So we'll bulldogs going to have been a four corners with 49 maybe looking for that last shot of the quarter.
Terrific.
First quarter of basketball.
You mentioned her both playing at a high level, just under 40 bulldogs looking for that open shot.
We'll probably maybe go to her now.
Wound down.
Oh, just down.
What a move by Hayes.
He deserved better with that one.
What a move had the crowd oohing and on and the announcers So now the Spartans will perhaps go for that last shot at the quarter spreading it out and they're in the fourth quarter 13 to go almost a turnover and they should start going to the hoop about now to start that play.
That's the zone just 3 seconds.
They might not get off a shot early.
Do what a goalie does.
Go what a shot by Brogdon to end the first quarter What a first quarter of play.
Let's see that when we come back, Patrick, because that was an excellent basketball play.
2317.
Much more to come in, boys.

Welcome back to the Boys Double-A Championship ball game, Greater Atlanta Christian, 23, Thomasville 17.
What a way to end a quarter.
Oh, here it is.
Watch this.
Wideman will flash from the low up to the high post.
Catch it without coming down.
Knock it to Brogdon in the corner.
That's textbook basketball one on one.
Just an excellent play at the end of the quarter.
Leiderman making his presence felt this afternoon.
Boy, he's a really smart, fundamentally sound player.
He makes other guys better.
So here we go.
Quarter to four bulldogs played a terrific first quarter.
We're going to take another 12 Thomasville and they were drain them from long distance.
But greater Atlanta Christian is getting the easier shots and shooting a better percentage.
Bulldogs now and a man to man against the Spartans looking inside to the big guys double low post here for a while and tempo is slowing down just a bit to start this second quarter and Coleman checks in for the Thomasville up What an IT in easy layup and if you do a shot chart he's all around the math AJ Davis number 15 for the Spartans checked in and yeah Wideman again boy he's got great hands here Spartans playing him out of hand now to the hoop and one for Charles Hayes Boy, does he have some explosiveness.
Yeah, he sure does.
And they needed that.
You get three points here the old fashioned way.
And he's just taking guys off the dribble.
I mean, he thinks he can get to the hoop any time.
You could see that early there.
He has gone right every time.
And they know he's going right and they still can't stop him.
That's when you know what, guys, quick Coach Tilmon said, a lot of big time coaches coming to the Bulldogs games with all these underclassmen.
And why not 2519 Spartans by six as we get under way.
Nice shot up and good again Boy he has got a nice throw he does Brogdon again only a junior averaging 20 and you can see why and he's six foot four so he can get that off on the wing on just about anybody pull through the hoop and throw it down.
Sophomore Robert Carter.
Ooh, and that will shake you up a little.
That was kind of a Connie Hawkins not many folks can remember.
Connie had the huge hands.
Watch this windmill slam.
Yes.
Six, eight, Stop.
MOORE Here we go.
Carter Hawkins.
That's the angle.
You want to see that one from your age in yourself?
A little bit.
I remember him.
Huge hands display Phenix mostly on the old balcony as his hands were so big he could tape his fingers together and still pump.
He would pluck rebounds out of air with one hand.
But boy, that was nice.
And Thomasville needed that.
That'll probably get some of the juices going and get their fans stirring over there.
Meanwhile, Greater Atlanta Christian just so efficient getting open looks Wideman getting the layups and Malcolm just rising up and stroking that pretty jumper from outside Coach Martin probably tell him look, you don't get style points at all to calm down and let's see what he can do.
As the Spartans begin to attack this ball.
Got mad at Eddie Fence again up to the hoop, shoring it up, getting the bounce and again that Brogdon is having a heck of a first half offensively already 14 points He's a good looking players little teardrop floater in the lane Coach Tilmon tightened up that defense a little.
Oh really Clayton been held in check so far by greater Atlanta Christian and I know that was one point Eddie Martin had on his bulletin board blackboard for the game to slow him down Bulldogs continue to attack and you saw the percentages 6850 from the field both teams getting some easy shots and making some tough ones as well.
Bulldogs still attacking Herb on that offensive end.
They've got some quickness around the perimeter and they had Creighton post it up and they couldn't find him being patient, looking for a good shot, taking it to the hook and getting it inside for a reason.
And that is Clayton.
And they get him off the schneid a little bit and good patience.
As you mentioned, Steve didn't rush the shot.
They were fighting was there and they knew it and they found him.
Spartans against the Bulldogs.
Spartans with the ball looking inside and up and going way outside.
Jumper Jump, jump is good.
Nicely done by Horton And the efficiency of both teams and this effort and execution has been tremendous.
3223 Spartans in control with guards again looking inside up and under and and it'll be a foul so got him with the body looks like he was wide arm and he's got his hands on his head.
You're not sending him to the line boy you can see Clayton only a sophomore.
You can see why there are some college coaches coming to this Thomasville teams games.
Oh, yeah.
Willie Clayton and Robert Carter, both sophomores.
You'll see here.
Number one, checking back in, up and inside, trying to get an easy hook right off the inbound shot in back off and Carter for two Carter and Clayton working the glass both only sophomores 3225 Spartans He's looking again high post and pick knocking Don't you're right Herb from what we saw two very physical games last night in Gwinnett so maybe our perception is a little scared, but it is it is tight going to the line will be Brogdon already with 14 points in this game trying to add to that and as he had a nice stroke you figured him to be a good free throw shooter with that stroke.
He's got some outside on his jump shot.
So pretty good numbers across the board with 26 and almost four assists.
Does it all?
It's going to be a real test for these young guys from Thomasville to hang with this veteran ballclub.
Well, I asked Coach Tillman about that.
He said, you know what, They may be young, but that's all they care about in basketball.
Basketball.
You've been through a full season.
You now just continue to hope that that's true and you get to this stage in the year.
You've got another year under your belt.
Bulldogs looking inside again.
Mason against the Spartans own defense as the Spartans mix it up.
Oh, outside again.
Long shot.
Hey, good.
Here come the Spartans.
Find a fast break, but nothing going.
So the look inside to the big guys.
That's good defense off the jumper.
No good.
Here come the Bulldogs controlling one run to see if they can get Swansea Hood.
See how long Holton stays out of the game.
Also for Thomasville, Man, he was really stroking some jump shots.
He's been on that bench for two or 3 minutes now.
Bulldogs with the long shot that was go she no good rebound up rebound is good by that man again Willie Clayton who's having an excellent first half as well Well that's where they're going to do some damage on the glass.
Got to get a body in front of those two guys coming up on 330 left in an entertaining and well played First half way outside no good rebound up and blocked but a foul and one will go to the foul line to shoot to and it's another tight call right there.
The reason the defensive player got the foul then was his his arm dropped a little bit down.
Keep your arms straight up and that's three.
Who was that on Frank So that play.
Oh man three on play.
So you're going to have to sit him down And he's been doing damage lately of late inside Double Bass Low That's your 20 point per game And you're right he's been doing some damage in the last couple of minutes on the glass so let's keep that in mind at 330 left he leaves it's a it's an eight point game.
Let's see what happens.
Second, what is good.
So a time out in a very entertaining first half, 3627 Spartans in the league.
Today's games is made possible in part by the following.
Thank you.
Can I help you today?
I know.
Thanks.
I'm just looking at this is cute and so tell the Titanic you wouldn't do it there.
So don't do it here.
Sportsmanship.
It's up to you like they're the fashion police.
Okay.
And welcome back.
It is greater.
Atlanta Christian, 36, Thomasville 27.
I'll tell what, the execution on both sides.
Tremendous.
But now let's see what happens in this last 330 with the Bulldogs having to sit down the star with three.
Yeah, they've got to be very, very careful here.
It's a nine point lead Now.
This thing could easily open up to double digits if they're not efficient on their offensive in and they don't get back because I guarantee you, coach Martin sees a chance for him to put some distance between his squad and Thomasville.
Coach Martin, backing that defense out wants to be a little more compact.
There's more to give up any easy whoops and he's gone to the zone up and hacked in Oh some strength there and one nicely done Carter just willing that ball in he's shown us he can fly on the dunk on the baseline and here you see him getting hit hard still manages to get that ball up and in a lot of strength there and the young man big play there for the Bulldogs we talked about it last night not only is Georgia just a wealth of basketball talent, but a lot of it is underclassmen.
It's a second one back and people think it's just in Atlanta, but it's not.
It's all this state.
It's the Bulldogs pressing little token pressure here.
Spartans better get that ball across it.
10 seconds.
What's on that referee count?
And I was counting with him.
You're going to have to get to a striped shirt or some striped underwear.
Whatever it takes.
Bulldogs inbounding it trying to cut into this league the third star on the bench.
So let's see what happens.
Spartans extending that defense.
That guy wanted to try that same route that he did in the first half for the dunk turnover Spartans looking to run.
Carter is not the guy you want over in the corner with a double team.
Put him under the basket, keep somebody else out there in the corner handling the ball.
Thorson Controlling things way outside for the three short.
Horton Trying to get back on defense.
Here come the Bulldogs run.
Nice work beautiful by Paul Dorsey Spartans running with the ball trying to get something easy going Knight slowing it down just a bit up bounce No, you're on the long haul.
Throw it away.
That hurts.
Yeah.
They missed an opportunity on the break a moment ago to cut it to five and then they throw away the outlet pass and that one hurt.
Now here's lock all ball.
Oh gosh Just a junior fox and friends a lot taller now has some hops.
Justin Fox, six foot three checks in for Thomasville Bulldogs.
Just 2 minutes to go in the second quarter, 3629 and a well played game Spartans on the perimeter and looking to get something inside and tucking that zone and there's a foul that's a lucky foul There's an old adage don't dribble gets to zone Yeah he got bailed out there a little bit of a late call too but I'm telling you, they're calling it tight.
These players are just going to have to adjust.
You cannot reach in, try to knock the ball away.
They're going to call it Elliott Long.
A senior will go to the line, try to extend this greater Atlanta Christian lead.
And they have in the football we mentioned Spartans have excellent free throw shooting team at 73%.
So they're going to hurt you at the line when you give them the opportunity.
Only loss for this greater Atlanta Christian school came outside the state and there you see some good free throw shooting, as you were mentioning here, 10 to 13 to do it.
Look at the discrepancy.
They've shot nine more free throws and Thomasville and it'll be Atlanta Christian ball later.
Atlanta Christian with control with a minute 30 left in the second quarter, nine point lead You don't you'd like to see it keep it under double digits.
Just a psychological factor.
It's not that important.
But when you look up at that scoreboard, you're down double digits coming out for the half.
It does make a little difference.
Clayton left with three fouls down by seven.
Too much dribbling bulldogs get a break and look down the other way.
Got to get a good win here and a kick.
Dribble with a purpose.
Dribble with a purpose.
No, what you're trying to set up.
I mean, at 18, you got to get a good look here.
You're not going to hold for one.
Make sure it's a high percentage shot.
Well, I saw Forbes hold up one finger.
I don't know if that was play one or going for one.
So I'm assuming they're just going for one against the Spartans.
If Zone defense looks like he's just going to sit back and be content to go in with a nine point lead or see if Thomasville can convert, well, pull the trigger a little early, go up and foul.
Going to the line will be Robert Carter.
So they pull the trigger alone.
Don't try to let him in to sleep.
Ben Tillman, confident in his team's ability to play defense on the other end, said, Hey, maybe we can trade two for one.
Not a bad idea if you got competition in your club, I would be the first to go.
Boy, I like his touch to help, big guy.
Yeah.
Be interested to see if Coach Tillman goes from his own in the second half with his star having three fouls.
That's good.
Willie Clayton, the sophomore of of the best in the country, really as a sophomore, is out sitting with 3000 just under 50 seconds to go in the second quarter the Spartans perhaps will go for one.
Let's stay on that tight boy I thought that was going to be an offense and it should have been looked like.
Could have been.
I mean, I was just about to say, you don't want to foul here because now it's a penalty.
You get the automatic, too.
And oh, you just don't want to do that with 40 seconds on the clock.
I know you want to play aggressive on defense, but you got to be smart.
No time and situation.
Paul Dawson at the line because the roll is cast.
You're going to knock them down when you put them at the line.
Well, that's why you don't want them to get a lead going into the fourth quarter, because if you have to foul and we're looking way ahead, this is not a team that you want to put on the line.
Well, maybe I want to ask Coach Tillman if he's going to make some defensive adjustments, because I know team likes to play aggressively that if the officials are going to call, knows where their line is going to knock down a bunch of free throws.
That's ten fouls in the first half.
Bulldogs now looking for that last shot, Jack, 12 for 16 in that first half alone and they're up by nine.
So that's the tale of the tape.
We're dogs waiting with 20 seconds to go in their second quarter down by nine with a star on the bench, they got to hold their own.
The Spartans, Charles Hayes, will go to the line for the fans, not happy with it, but they're consistent.
They're calling all the grabs and touches and regions and we said it early.
That's all you can ask for.
I don't see the coaches complaining.
Charles Hayes has been aggressive the whole way.
Herb, this first half, I mean, he's been going to the hoop and getting their senior 511 couple of big free throws and look out for gassy because 10 seconds is the way Eddie Martin can set up a play.
They'll get something up.
We saw what happened at the end of the first quarter.
5 seconds to go, going to the hoop up.
And is it a charge or is it a foul?
Well, Carter thought it was a charge.
I'm not so sure.
It looks like they're going.
Yeah, they got the block.
Look at Brogdon.
Love this kid's game.
Could shoot it and go to the hoop and put it on the floor.
Only a junior looks like a no call.
It might have been the call there, but they're going to give Brogdon a couple of shots.
He's almost going to get his average in the first half and that's a big swing because now you missed two, three, three.
You missed the first front end of a free throw down there.
And Brogdon comes back and probably converts to an that hurts.
You go from 9 to 11 down at halftime, 17 points already and as we mentioned, averaging 20 points a game six of nine and they're not all layups.
He's hit some jumpers.
2 seconds left in the second quarter and that's good.
Let's see if we can have a long shot.
Go.
Bulldogs will get a long heave ho and maybe the way there in the stands could have thrown it and send it.
It is a quarterback that doesn't know what a first half of action 4231 Spartans with an 11 point lead.
Let's go to cars courtside.
Thank you, Sue.
Coach Vernon, you got a 11 point lead going into halftime.
What are you going to tell your team?
We got to play better than we have so far.
I mean, we've given up 31 points.
That's a lot of points to give up in a half.
That's not customary of what our defense is like.
So we're going to challenge our kids defensively.
We've got them a little bit of foul trouble, so we're going to attack them inside, too.
All right, Thanks.
Good luck in the second half, too.
All right.

Thanks for watching the basketball action here on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
We're going to have the second half of the game coming up in just a bit.
I am John Nelson, the host of Prep Sports.
Plus here on GPB, alongside my tag team partner and more talented basketball star, the elevator from Decatur, Herb White.
And we are going to talk about why folks need to be MVP's of Georgia Public Broadcasting as well, simply because if you want to see more great basketball players like Maya moore, Kwami Brown, Dwight Howard, Lewis Williams, Thompson, Humphries, all the great teams that we've seen over the last 15 years, there's only one way to do it because if Georgia Public Broadcasting does not continue to do these games, they're going to get spread out amongst who knows who.
And you're going to see games at all times of the day.
You're going to see maybe tape delay games.
It's like it was 15 years ago.
So Georgia high school sports deserves more.
They deserve what we're doing for them.
And the only way we're going to keep doing that is with these guys help, John.
And that's the way to do it.
You know, you talk about basic membership and you talk about all the different levels that you can be an MVP for Gp-B and here's how you do it.
Basic membership, 25 and $35.
And you can do that by checking that number right there at the bottom of your screen and doing it on our secure server.
Dawg.
$35 level is basic.
It's a one time thing.
If you're a student, a senior, a member of the military, it's $25.
But we also have some thank you's associated with the basketball championships that you're seeing right now here on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
At the $35 level, there's your foldable stadium cushion for your foldable sport of choice.
Doesn't have to be just football.
It can be whatever sports you want, can go ahead and take it with you indoors or outdoors has a GPB logo.
You get to show your support for GPB out in the open 12 months out of the year, the $35 level next step up.
You can do this one on installments at your GPB logo.
Roll up blanket once again, show your support and stay warm 12 months out of the year that you can do on installments, $6.25.
You can't come up with a greater impact by being an MVP for Georgia Public Broadcasting at the $75 level.
And how do you do that right now?
Once again, number bottom of the screen website, GB dot org, a few quick clicks.
As we like to say, you're in business, you can do it on your AT&T mobile phone at GPB.
If you are part of the team here at Georgia Public Broadcasting.
First off, we want to thank you.
If you haven't made that effort to be a part of the team here at GPB, now is your chance to do it.
Continue to show your support for the only statewide voice that Georgia Public Broadcasting has.
And you've got to do it.
This is the time to do it.
Herb Right here.
GPB You know, you may have guessed this.
I do probably my best work on the other side of the camera.
Jon That's probably evident because, you know, my job is to raise corporate dollars for Georgia Public Broadcasting for our programing.
And let's face it, we have some great corporate partners that work with us on our high school sports.
And I don't need to tell everybody who they are.
They'll be able to see them during the games, but only between the games and between the quarters because we do not interrupt our programing for commercials.
So I thank our public support, our corporate supporters.
When you get the chance.
These guys don't even run the hard commercials like they'd be able to run on commercial or cable television.
They run spots talking about their support for their communities, and that's why they're involved in this.
They're involved to help these because they have kids, they have families, they have people involved in these games just like you do.
So if you're sitting there in your living room or in your den and you're enjoying these games.
On Georgia Public Broadcasting, there's only one way to say thank you for us for having these games available to you, and that's by going to your phone.
Becoming a member of Georgia Public Broadcasting, use a credit card.
Don't forget 24 seven you can go to WW w dot GPB Dawg and become a member of Georgia Public Broadcasting 24 seven And we urge you to do that.
There's no more important factor in this equation than you out there, so realize that it's time to do it.
John All right, one more time.
Let's go through the thank you is very, very quickly $35 level.
Once again, this is a one time investment in Georgia Public Broadcasting.
It's the federal stadium question with your GPB logo.
Next step up the ladder at the $75 level, a little over $6 a month on average that you roll up blanket for your investment in Georgia Public broadcasting.
Then the combos $125 level logo, thermos, stadium cushion, roll a blanket, then the his and hers are years and years of the one $75 level two logo thermoses, the two foldable stadium cushions in the blanket.
John You see a lot of spin in politics and television, but this is not one of the places.
This is the truth.
I don't know how you do this.

Greater Atlanta Christian with an 11 point lead over Thomasville 4231.
Let's take a look at some sensational first half action.
And it was up and down and from the outside, Fred Holden.
But his team, Thomasville, had it going early from the outside, the jumpers.
And they said, well, let's go to the big guy and see what he can do underneath.
And Robert Carter with one of the plays of the game so far with the Slam.
But here comes greater Atlanta Christian Man, they can go.
It was the Brogdon show.
He was hitting from the outside.
He was hitting from the inside.
He was doing it all right.
As Brogdon had a first half that ended the first quarter three pointers all over the place.
That doesn't land.
A Christian school looks pretty well suited for the second half.
What do you make of the number?
Here's stats.
And I told you a greater Atlanta Christian is going to be very efficient.
12 for 19 on their field goal 63%, 50% on the three pointers and 14 for 18 from the throw line rebounds about even.
But you know I was hoping we were going to check with the coach and ask him of Thomas Fields coach coach gentleman.
Well here's Scott Kozlowski with coach coming on the second half down by 11 at the half.
What did you tell your kids in the locker room?
You just got to settle down, settle down and continue to play our game.
I think we got we got some kids in foul trouble and we can continue to play hard nosed defense.
I think everything will come out all right.
We've been here before, so we just got to continue to battle.
All right.
Good luck in the second half.
So let's see what happens in the second half.
Willie Clayton, that Thomasville Star with those three fouls, you look maybe for his own in the second half.
Well, the problem is, if you're going to play hard nosed defense and the officials are going to continue to call those fouls and you're going to put greater Atlanta Christian on the line, they're going to knock them down.
So if you're going to play hard nosed defense, you're going to have to do it without fouling.
Let's see if the Spartans attack underneath.
Try to get that fourth one play just underway.
Bulldogs with the ball looking way outside the three pointer short.
You're not exactly the shot you'd want Hayes short on the three three pointer.
So the Spartans trying to get their offense going boy where they shooting a high percentage in the first half of rebound with his bucket and that brings Bobby up on his feet proud of his little guy.
But you just get the feeling when the Spartans that every shot they get has been designed to get that very shots.
They've been open, been good looks and haven't been for Bulldogs will try to attack and come back with a three of their own from the corner No good rebound strong rebound up and that's how it's done by Robert Carter.
Yeah he's up there on the boards and he's got a nice touch once he gets the rebound to put it back in Bulldogs with some backcourt pressure and the turnover too and one fastbreak to the hoop man up no good Japan is good and nicely followed up by Holton.
Holton sat on the bench a lot in the first half, but he's come back out and made his presence felt here to start the second and big play for the Spartans to cut it to ten excuse me for Thomasville Way outside with the shot that was going first half the Brogdon just a little short this time the Bulldogs attacking Spartans the man to man Bulldogs patient and looking inside to the big guy has to be careful with those three fouls up for no good on the three pointer and that will be Spartans and nice job of inside Clayton got it back to the man for the jump shot didn't knock it down got to the hoop and the good follow up and Holton follows And that's where you do your hustle on the break.
That can happen.
You say it all the time with Clayton having three fouls, you think about it defensively.
He's got to be careful offensively to not to get a chance if he does nice move up and no good rebound Tuck Oh again no good third time's an out of China and controlled by the big guy underneath Carter looking down court with one dribble left to pull up inside and a foul So that was Clayton going up against Wideman and Clayton will go to the line and Leiderman thought he got our ball there Clayton was up under the basket there we see it but he's got his arms out.
You got to get those arms straight up.
Yeah, they're going to call it.
And you don't realize as a player you feel like you got him straight up too, but evidently a foul.
You're absolutely right.
So and if we broke quite a mind over here and showed him the replay and say, Yeah, I got him.
Clayton missing the first 2 to 18 points a game score 23 in the semis.
He's been consistent all season.
It's too bad he's had to sit because again, one of the most highly regarded sophomores not just in the state of Georgia but in the country.
He'll try to warm up after missing too.
So the Spartans on the attack Bulldogs with some token backcourt presence still up by ten looking inside to wide and then way outside Butler off the rim and the Bulldogs for for a fast break and Clayton is open just a little too hard on the pass Well too much mustard on that one but he had to try to thread the needle he down ten you got to make sure your possessions count.
I know you want to score on the break, but boy, you just need to score 530 left in this third quarter as coaches want to talk it over, settle it down maybe a little, get some good looks.
Well, the Spartans have missed a couple of shots, two or three shots and gave Thomas Phil a chance.
Bulldogs to get back in this thing a little bit.
They missed two free throws and threw the ball away.
Let me remind you, of course, if you ever wonder how the Masters came to be in Augusta, here's a hint.
General Sherman played a role.
Watch a dusters Master Plan or GPB Original Easter Sunday, April 4th at 8 p.m.. GPB Television.
We're sharing and that's one of the documentaries for our 50th anniversary celebration.
It's through 50 years of quality programing on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
And no, I haven't been there for all 50 I know.
You were waiting to say that most of them as a turnover by the Spartans underneath.
So that means the Bulldogs will get the ball underneath and they need to convert here.
They're getting some opportunities and they have it out underneath their own hoop.
4535 Spartans have been in control midway through that first quarter, but it is anything but over because I'll tell you what, these Bulldogs are an up and down team and quick and you get a couple of turnovers in a hurry.
Oh sure, yeah.
With the size they have, they missed some shots.
Clayton and Carter can stick them back in.
Look for one of my big guys.
Here they are but they can't find them.
Nice try by Paul Johnson is trying to steal that ball.
You guys went down again this time from the side 530 this third quarter is Coach Martin thinks it over there he's in his own 131 Bulldogs attacking way outside no good off the rebound and you expect that from Willie Blake I'm telling you he is a low Julian Horton was trying to block him out and then play and Carter didn't even know the was there.
No let him get started dead with three fouls has to be careful but that's carried the offensive load for this bulldog team all season three point game as a bear goes to the hoop and has his block which his dad a basketball player as well as the football.
But I'm not sure if he played basketball or not.
I've known for an awful long time.
We never talked about it, but obviously a tremendous football career with Samsung and the Falcons rebound by the big guy as he pulls it in.
He's trying to control the boards.
Good defense by the Bulldogs on that possession.
Oh three down and out.
In and out Wilson tried it but couldn't pull it rebound it up and nice play by Elliott Long getting out for the easy Oh well that kills he you had a three down in the basket to cut it to seven and they get the easy layup at the other end Spartans remain in the zone Willie Clayton underneath calling for that ball and he gets it and he will go to the line Clayton you're right a the handle underneath great hands great leaking ability and he's going to be pushing up the rest of his hand.
Well I'm amazed that Dozier could get that ball in there.
He he stood there and stared at Willie Clayton.
Let's watch and see.
He's telegraphed in the past that Clayton is such a great leaper, even though they knew it was coming, he was able go up and get it and he needs to knock down a couple.
He missed his last two.
Well, you're right.
Herbert was two feet inside of midcourt, so you should be able to back up in the zone to protect that.
And that's three in a row.
This 3737 basketball championship here from the center plex and making supply ten again, Herb White, our pleasure to bring you all the action this afternoon.
And don't forget plenty more to come as even this is a well-played basketball game this afternoon.
Second took too long and didn't hit a fan.
Well he's got in his head now Spartans looking to attack when he misses He looks pretty good with the shot.
Of course that was Brogdon fast break long three pointer up no good rebound Bulldogs will try it again Little Meadowlark Lemon there up no good and still controlling the Bulldogs Well they don't need a strong and one and really Clayton starting to take over a little underneath I think every member of the Bulldogs got their hand on that ball off the boards.
That was great determination and man is a good thing they scored.
You don't want to get four or five looks at it and not convert it.
Now watch this one.
And they were the last.
Yes, there were three prior to that.
And boy, that's a big play for the Bulldogs right there.
Let's see what Clayton does.
He's missed four straight from the line, maybe used the opposite ANNOUNCER jinx to make it but no and that's five and that was pocket free throws.
When you are down by eight that's like putting you miss a couple of those.
It gets in your head and he's a young guy so bulldogs with full court pressure and the turnover they're going underneath lobbing and look at this great hands by Clayton he has made the difference Clayton the force underneath and all of a sudden we got a six point ballgame and coach Martin tries to call that timeout.
And this one could be a lot closer if Thomasville could convert their free throws.
That's the difference in this ballgame right now.
But give them credit, the Bulldogs are hanging tough and they've turned up the defense without fouling as well.
And that's the key.
Say without fouling.
Really?
Really.
Clayton, don't forget came into this third quarter with three fouls and he has been the difference underneath like you said Herb Farkas on this particular we got a one point game well they had ten in the first half they played the first four and a half minutes of this quarter and they have zero fouls through.
So a great adjustment by Coach Tilmon and his players.
Well, this will tell you something for the line, Thomas.
Good for 412 Greater Atlanta Christian, 15 for 18.
So an 11 point swing right there from the line.
Well it really Thomasville everybody's shooting in pretty good Clayton so he just needs to make a couple relax up there and but he's doing everything else for his team he's rebounding and he's putting the ball back in the basket.
So we got to see the ball game field goal percentage 63 in the first half.
Look at that in a second.
I told you I thought the Greater Atlanta Christian looked like they were a little out of sync and you got to credit that to the Bulldogs, upping their defensive pressure again without committing the fouls.
Bulldogs with the full court pressure.
It has worked so far.
A will try to break it, bringing it up slowly against this very quick back court of the Bulldogs off.
And there's the big guy who's been doing that and that of Clayton I believe they got Clayton.
If it is that's for him Let's see if they did and that would be a huge foul considering that he had been taking over offensively in this second half.
So Trent Richmond six seven senior shooting during the first one Good nice touch again if you haven't heard going to the College of Charleston next season the play too part of Curtis 320 left in second one up second was good.
Oh what a difference the foul shooting has made in this game.
So with 320 left in the boys double championship, 4948.
But we've only just begun.
It is getting tight.
We're back with more basketball action for the center here in make in today's games is made possible in part by the following broadcast of this program is made possible in part by the Georgia High School Association.
The GHC would like to thank State Farm for their support of high school sports programing on GPB State Farm agents are proud of the achievements of Georgia student athletes and would like to remind families and teams to drive safely in your communities as you travel to work school or play.
State Farm wants what you want safe driving for you and your family.
Welcome back.
320 In this third quarter of the boys double championship, 4941 Greater Atlanta took it up by eight for want to come back in What a job by Willie Clayton in this third quarter Yeah and unfortunately he just picked up his fourth foul and that's the only foul that the Thomasville Bulldogs have committed in this one but it was a big win I think they gave it to Clayton, so I don't think so.
We'll have to get confirmation on that.
He was right there, but maybe they dodged a bullet because they can ill to have him leave the game.
But let's watch his bulldog offense.
They've been lobbying the ball down Clayton way out time it's been working so let's see if that Spartan zone packs it back they did not call that one on Clayton so he still only has three.
Dozier tried to pull the trigger Somebody got a piece of that.
I believe it's going to remain Thomas Fields ball.
I'm looking for Clayton inside right here.
Watch him spin.
Watch him come across.
You got to be careful on the pitch.
Pick up that fourth foul.
Is the Bulldogs inbound going against that zone defense of the Spartans who are now packing it in.
Herb it's a23 now.
They've gone out of the won three one and a couple of long three knocked to the ground and here come the Spartans with the control break That's the Bulldogs man.
The man.
345 and then a three second call.
I know that got out.
I'm going to say we haven't seen a three second call in several years.
So Ehmer picks up the foul away from the ball and it's history again.
Another opportunity for the Bulldogs cut this lead.
Got to get something better than a 26 footer though Holton running the baseline against this 131 underneath Bulldogs still trying to tack there he is with the jumper dangerous play Hey they're trying to control a little bit of a scrum and there's a foul and let's see who this is against I believe they called it on Mitchell It's going to go on.
Mitchell And he was going for the loose ball fans getting a little excited, but the officials have made a decision keep this game under control and they've been consistent since the get go big.
Robert Carter checking back in for the Bulldogs and Thomasville missing another opportunity to cut this lead down.
They've had several Spartans again attacking the man for man with an eight point game, just about 2 minutes left in the third quarter of a well play game.
Yeah, well, he's taking good time on the perimeter against the man of man out into the woods, open underneath.
But he is controlling the boards.
Willie Clayton Bulldogs want to run up in Dipsy doodle.
No good player.
Couldn't be aggressive on that one Herbert.
He got it blocked.
A little trouble here, though.
Let's see what happens.
SCRUGGS Looking underneath and in control.
Well, I'll tell you what Thomasville has been able to do, and that shut Brogdon down in this half.
Still, he was really killing them in the first half and they've done a great job defensively On him and had a couple of chances to come up with the steal there.
Just missed it.
This bulldog team so quick count all the tips they've had Herb and the near misses.
On turnovers and still remaining in it eight point game Spartans looking back door nice execution up no good hunt even with the rebound and he is down and we'll take a look at the tar ball there I mean I hate to criticize officials and I'm not but Clayton got all ball a lot of men on whoever they go here you go.
Well, here it is.
Take a look and see what you're thinking.
And there was some hand in there.
And Willie Clayton picks up a big number for and he walks in and that's a tough one.
Clayton On the other end, that was some contact.
No call and come down here and again it's like it was all ball but Rodman misses the first one.
Well, let's let's be honest the refs have been calling the tight ball game.
They've been consistent.
So we've got to watch up, block, shout a foul.
But that's just me.
5041 with just about a minute 16 left in this third quarter Bulldogs against his own defense trying to close things make a run in the fourth quarter way outside with the jumper no good no save and there we go again all over the court the ball rolling on and who's going to end up in there?
It's a foul, right?
I mean, they're going to get right on, man.
I believe.
No, I don't think so.
No That's going to go against Dawson.
Okay.
Wideman was there.
He was shaking his head.
Well, here's your scramble.
Well, this has been like a football game.
There's a lot of hands.
It could have been called on a lot of guys.
But Holt will be going to the line.
And we've mentioned it can't emphasize it enough.
The difference in this game has been for the line.
Yep, Bulldogs got to start knocking down some of their free throw crosses.
That is at least six.
They have missed Bolton with the second 11 points.
Couple of boards solid game.
There you go.
They're going to turn up the pressure full court man to man dangerous pass by Haber took it out behind the basket which always isn't a good idea but okay on that one.
As the Spartans attack this man and Andy Fest by the Bulldogs under a minute to go third quarter in the height of it, who wants to take it to the hoop up No good and back the turnover they they're got to steal it on hook up and no drill Hardiman with the rebound out of it up rider man it's just relentless in their stuff and he keeps that ball above his head.
Once he gets the rebound, he doesn't bring it down.
He keeps it up.
Why didn't one of those kids six, seven?
But he's got the arms of like a 611 kid up.
No good, rebound up no good.
And another big guy.
No good.
And a lot of them work the rebound.
They got numbers taking it to the hole.
Hoffman fouled and beautifully done by Paul Dawson Nice job of using his body to shield on the defensive player Watch him Yeah that's a nice play and drew the foul and that's big that opens it up to a 12 point lead when you think of some of the ways that this great Atlanta Christian has ended, some of the corners the big three pointer to end the first quarter this looks like it might come close to ending the third quarter.
Beautiful playing body control and Dawson with the free throw in good at 10 seconds that's of time to get it up and get a look Bulldogs trying to get a good look trying to throw it up long three pointer nicely done by Georgia and he makes the three pointer on how big that he is That's only ten so up the down outs and one quarter to go and what has been a sensational big boys double final 8 minutes of the ballgame coming up I wish DVDs of today's game can be purchased at GHC dot TV for 2495 plus tax plus 595 shipping in hand broadcast.

So don't do it here.
Sportsmanship.
It's up to you.
What jerk?
This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station, serving all of Georgia.
Welcome back.
5544, Greater Atlanta Christian up by 11.
Herb, quickly, Plan B for each team.
What for fourth quarter were the first to see the foul trouble on the screen Clayton with four.
Mitchell with three and Goga with three.
Nobody from gassy I think is in trouble.
But Coach Martin, all he needs to do is do what he's doing.
You know, if he's getting a lot of pressure, he may want to look for some backdoor plays, but just keep the ball.
They're going to have to fire.
And he knows his guys can shoot free throws for the Bulldogs.
Here we go.
It's got Clayton and Carter in the game and I was wondering if he was going to do that tonight.
They haven't played much together and I think that's a good idea.
Look for those two guys inside, maybe a little high low between those two.
So we'll look for it.
We'll keep our eye on Clayton, who is playing with four very big fouls Spartans in control to start this fourth quarter 5540 for what has been a well played ball game man to man for the Bulldogs spin route Great nicely done by Wade in it and that's what you want at this stage Harrison his shots in the paint Spartans have his own defense.
They can't take a lot of time looking for their shots.
Clayton has been effective underneath in the third, he was getting everything he wanted inside, guards working it around the perimeter.
As Herb said, look for a little high low.
It looked like that's what they were going to try to do.
They're looking for Carter around the foul line and maybe he and Clayton can get something going or at the very least get a good shot and let those guys play the glass for you.
And there it is.
Oh, three pointer short of the mark, then one with an easy rebound back wall pressure by the Bulldogs just to rebound those air balls Nice steal Dozier Bulldogs very quick getting it back on offense need a hoop here inside outside a three pointer short of the mark and all over the boards for the Spartans but lose it and all the hall who was there picking it up Mitchell Christie got a good look the Bulldogs did Christie look like he had that one wrapped up, lost it and Bulldogs were able to convert.
Now he got us that 11 point game.
Christie always a sophomore.
So we talk about all this young talent looking at this Thomas team, just keep the pressure on in the huddle, try to get the easy shots and try to get stuff underneath, I'm guessing.
Yeah, we've seen a lot of great underclassmen the last couple of days.
You look at that Miller Grove team and you look at Milton, all the sophomores and juniors that we're seeing out here, they're going to be back.
Boy, I'll tell you, high school basketball in Georgia, folks are just in for a treat.
Read Atlanta, Christian Brogdon, six four.
You've seen him tonight.
He's only a junior now and big time player.
You know why the folks in for a treat?
Because the Georgia High School Association and Georgia Public Broadcasting are partners.
And we're going to continue to bring you all the action.
No one does it better.
Hey, they're bringing it up, looking around.
And Spartans control looking inside.
Not a shot.
It's a pat block.
So you won't see J.C. taking bad shots.
They're going to work the ball, get a high percentage.
What a move.
As we were talking about it, Roger, with a little hesitation going to the hoop.
And you know what?
He can do it.
He can shoot at the stroke.
He is really a good looking swing, man.
Good for the block of the pass.
And watch this hesitation.
Move a little stutter.
This is Kid six four and he's built.
Yeah, he's the perfect wingman.
Or to guard what you look for in a college.
Two man, he's got the stroke.
He can put it on the floor and beat you off the dribble.
The nice passer he plays under control.
And Willie Clayton is going to the bench 12 points and seven rebounds.
And he didn't.
He probably played half the games, too.
So some good numbers.
But unfortunately, the young man on the bench for the rest of the way here, we talk about the underclassmen.
Clayton, only a sophomore, six seven.
So he's going to put on some inches and put on some big boy can bet Thomasville is going to be back in the mix next year, 5946 and Thornton's trying to spread it out.
They're not out of the mix this year for the state championship, but they've got to start converting right now.
Looking around that zone defense, it has been so effective for the Spartans in this game and yep, that's it.
And that's what happens when you get a big guy outside the size of Robert Carter.
He's trying to put it on the floor.
Yeah, he Robert's got to get in there low and try to get some rebounds or try to let him feed him that.
Well, you get Willie Clayton now that's a big chunk of your offense.
Spartans spreading it out Lane Brogdon handled things, bringing the big guys out, trying to take some time off that clock.
Long jumper by rid of him.
No good and is it a great save and I know it will be Hogan's ball say Brogdon stepped on the line as he was jumping to throw it off to Thomasville player who takes over now for this bulldog team.
Well it's got to be a team effort just got it Get the dribble drive against his own get somebody open for a good look going to looking inside fouled and I'm not sure you want a foul Robert Carter 15 feet away from the and that's just that's just what coach Eddie Martin is wondering why would you want to follow that guy there Because he's got a good stroke from the line to go make him prove it.
At this time of the game.
Hey, first one up where they have had trouble from the line in the second half and really during the whole game.
Well, I imagine there's about a ten free throw discrepancy as far as made two free throws.
So the difference in the ballgame.
Yep.
Carter misses the second rebound.
Spartans guard to go eight.
They're going to take it up.
No.
Do we have an up and no foul?
We go the other way.
Good job by Carter to strip Letterman without fouling.
530 to go fourth quarter double eight championship game Williams way outside no good controlling and Robin will try to get on the break Avery's open he's going to take it to the hole himself and he'll go to the line.
Yeah, I think Roger asking if I'm going to get to shoot baskets and I believe he will look like he's not going to give it to him.
Out of bounds.
Checking in Charles Hayes for the Bulldogs and nope, not a shooting foul.
So Spartans will take it out of bounds.
Gassy 17 fouls and that's one in a foul way.
You don't like seeing that if your coach Elliott Long just snuck right in there got the hoop and one nice play It's just a sign of good coaching Here you go And you can off those out of bounds plays too.
That's when the coach sets it up every time.
If you score like that, you say, That's the coach.
Well, very quickly, it has become a 15 point ball game with the possibility of it going to 16 points long at the line.
Well, we saw something similar last night when Marcus Thornton hurt in that ballgame in the five, eight game and his teammates had to pick it up and they're playing out of their comfort zone when they're trying to make up for his scoring instead of getting it in the flow of the game.
They're trying to force it a little bit.
Coach Tilmon, let's see what we got here.
And I don't know if the clock started before a player touched it.
He was letting it roll or not.
So let's see if they add a little time.
It's 517 as we stand now and the referees are discussing good job by the officials.
And, you know, I had one little issue with that blocked shot.
But other than that, these officials have really called a nice ball game here right from the get go.
They let these guys know we're not going to put up with anything and we're going to call it tight.
And that's what they've done.
And it's the game's been under control the whole way and we're adjusting the clock now.
So they're taking it down to five and now we're going back up again.
And you know, there's this free throw discrepancy, but that's because great Atlanta Christian has shot more, but they certainly shot a much better percentage.
And Thomasville Bulldogs have had their chances to stay in this thing from the line and have not been able to convert, especially here in the second half.
So what do we have it out here?
We had it at 517, I think.
Yeah.
Had few seconds on their 6246 to play attacker Herb White bringing you all the action from the center plex here in Macon.
Always like to remind much more basketball coming up As a matter of fact, this weekend, 22 hours of live basketball and GPB do it better than anybody that I've ever seen.
That's got another great girls tilt coming up immediately following this one and added a couple of seconds her seconds for the lifetime my coaches say so 519 and now down to 517.
The Bulldogs trying to find something on Hatcher inside Oh no good rebound handled by the Spartans and there will be a foul and I have a feeling this is going to be a parade to the foul line as well Shoot again Hayes trying to get the ball from behind and it's a tough team to come from behind.
When you put them on the free throw line, scores were hurt.
You were mentioning it.
It could be a ten point difference.
Thomasville 516 This evening, GHC now 22 for 27, that's under 33%.
And that's not going to get it done.
Little in a state championship game early Saturday morning scrimmage, 5 minutes to go.
The Bulldogs trying to find an answer.
Long three is way short but they sure and it will be bulldogs fall for this greater Atlanta Christian team came in with a mission they lost in the finals last year to Dublin just down the season and just down the road they were focused.
Bulldogs trying to force things, just get it inside and up and I'm not sure foul to go, but wait a minute.
Gets ahold let's see if the goal line and shoot two probably at one another.
Then they're going to give it to him with he's on the floor, but it's a one and one anyhow, no matter what.
And again, it's another one of those games like we had last night with 14 who found out and or who was injured and the game was close for three quarters and got away in the fourth.
And you look at the final score the next day, they say, boy, that was a blowout.
The same thing here.
This has been a very good game, but I think maybe the final score might not be an indication of how good this game really was.
Yep.
And look at Whiteman's numbers, 14 points, 12 rebounds.
I'm really impressed with this kid.
He's just a solid, fundamental player.
You put some really talented athletes around and he's going to make them better and he passes the ball well and makes his free throws.
He battles you underneath.
Bobby Crimmins is going to be very happy with this young man.
He's to have a coach say, Do what you can do.
And that's what this kid does, though, that can't do anything he can't do and stays within himself.
445 to go 18 point game inside and one end, Robert Carter will go to the foul line.
Only a sophomore.
He's a good looking sophomore at six only going to get better Yeah and that's a nice little move there and Carter with the drop step and but you're right about your point a moment ago you get a ten or 12 point game and you're battling from behind and you're trying to steal and you're playing a team that can shoot free throws.
Well, and you got a foul and they go to the line and man, it just snowballs on you.
So it looks a lot worse than it is.
Nobody really cares about the final margin.
You're just trying to win the ballgame.
You're only going to press double teamed and Spartans taking your time, but bring it up.
And that might have been a hack, but no call and that should be Bulldogs ball and it so there is a turnover and that's exactly what they need if they want to make some kind of mad rush, well they're going to have to make some threes at this stage.
Do they have 16 with 430 to go Spartans in that one, three one that has been so effective this afternoon?
I have to pull the trigger fairly quickly now, but don't take a bad shot.
Great talents, great shot, great hoop for Charles Haynes.
And it took them 21 seconds to get the basket.
So, you know, that's he can't do that.
You don't have enough time left.
You're going to have to score worse than that.
But it was a nice play by Hayes couldn't draw the foul checking back in Paul Dotson for greater Atlanta Christian who's going to try to break this precedent.
My guess is split things out.
Well that's one lady not right here.
Well, that's a nice break to him for the easy work.
Getting It Well done by Julian Horton and just the pass to the middle of the court to beat the pressure.
Leiderman just turns and flicks it and then just textbook again with Alex on the attack.
Big guy showing some range as Carter hits and they're not slowing it down a bit.
Spartans now want to pull it out and try to take some time off the clock with under 4 minutes to go in this Dunaway High School basketball championship Brogdon to the hoop No foul up chance the dunk no good Brogdon back in and the hoop Well they're letting them play now this is about as much as they've let him have contact and you got to be impressed with Robert Carter I mean the young man, six foot eight sophomore playing his heart out, maybe the game of his career.
I mean, he's done it all tonight, Been over such a little area.
But I'm telling you, he's getting that big body up and down the floor.
Schroder Nice touch from outside.
Can do it inside, too.
And again, just a just a kid.
Just a sophomore.
Bulldogs on the attack Tough shot good boxing out Hey taps it it's now a mad rush and will be Spartans ball 310 left 6852 Boy two players just going all out try to come up with that loose ball and good We had a technical problem with that they buried I believe it was hot tempered Cajun didn't want to do that.
So that's what we need to take advantage of these.
And yeah, this could have been a four or five point swing, make the two free throws and get a bucket or a three pointer and that's, that's huge.
You're right back in the ten or 11 point game.
So smart and astray there.
No the ball there's no time for a technical foul but certainly in the state finals coming down the stretch.
Well a three pointer can make it interesting right here Stu 310 to go fourth quarter Spartans against the Mustangs.
Let's see what we got got growing up quick Herb looking for the three pointer instead Bulldogs take it to the hole and catch a little bit enough itself on the fast break under control.
Amazingly in Mustang our bulldogs come up with it with the ball.
Oh, beautiful job.
This situation is done by Charles Hayes and he's done it a couple of times showing great balance.
Yeah, he's a senior, taking control when he needs to get in.
And I think Coach Martin is going to say, let's try to stop this guy, number one.
And number two, let's pull this thing out and look a little tired.
Yeah, that's why it wasn't a bad play a moment ago.
But you had enough time.
And I'm a little bit surprised still, that Thomasville is not looking for three pointers now.
They've scored the last two times down, but they're still down 13 with only 248.
And I can promise you greater on a Christian's got to run some time off the clock on this possession upcoming action tonight girls triple-A championship Columbia against Carver that will be at 7:00 Hope you join us for that More action triple-A boys game Herb and I'll have that one for you Columbia against Lagrange 31 to no going for a perfect season.
Looking forward to that win in Columbia.
Of course a team that we've seen a bunch in the last five years.
Phil McCrory his team's always competitive.
A couple of their former players, Jeremy Price and Travis Leslie doing pretty well in the collegiate ranks now.
And I heard them call Travis Leslie, the elevator syndicator the other day.
And now I will have to check on the cup.
I gave him permission.
Oh, did you?
I did say that, yes.
He's just got a Decatur mailing address, even though he's not from the city of Decatur, but I think he's earned it.
Bulldogs for Kirk pressure as the Spartans tried to bring it up and they're going to go to the live.
Paul Dawson the ship to this elevator's stuck permanently on the first floor.
He stood no more, no more jumping ability, None whatsoever.
You know, actually I did touch the rim a couple of months ago and not bad for a 61 year old white guy with two artificial knees.
What do you think?
I heard you were changing a net with a ladder.
So did you ever touch on the rim, Dawson?
To the line, The first one up and the first one.
No good.
We'll look at this game and will analyze it.
And of course, Willie Clayton went out early.
But the huge difference we've talked about it has been for the line and the Spartans have been pretty good.
One other thing, greater Atlanta has forced the Bulldogs to foul with their efficiency on offense.
You know, they they just do a good job of getting the looks that they want way outside for the big guy trying to show some range and the rebound and going to the foul line will be Brogdon got to take long shot but I'm not sure you want your six eight power center forward you want him underneath trying to get a board if he can't yeah it's for him to shoot from out there and go get the rebound And again, you can't say enough about Brogdon then he does it at both ends of the floor and he never looks like he's out of control, even though he plays very hard, he's always under control.
This is the first of to 20 point average.
That's a nice rotation on the ball.
Watch the way this thing floats up there with the spin 21 points this evening as you start to go into that time.
But most of them were in the second of first half.
70 to 55 is good.
Atlanta Christian to now feel that championship Spartans in that zone defense there's a big guy trying to take it through the hoop but put the ball on the floor.
Spartans were there spreading it out, looking underneath wide open.
Wait a minute.
But with a party and the fans always like those late in the game, like to see the slams.
7255 game for three and a half quarters.
Herb really Clayton went out Spartans got some easy shots then sensational all game long from the foul line Nice runner nice by Robert Target Yeah Carter showed us a little bit of everything even that's for sure.
And you know the Bulldogs hit two or three early jump shots and let's see the play again with read him in on the dunk The Bulldogs had a couple of long wins early and I don't know if they got a little overconfident in their jump shooting or what and maybe they were forced to because Clayton was out.
But they have not shot a good percentage from distance tonight as well as the free throw line.
You got to call that one, but they'll take it.
AJ Davis with the banker, we're going to bring it back out.
The time to just move that clutch Spartans spreading it out and the foul.
So Paul Dawson will go to the line and it's been a long, long time for this greater Atlanta Christian team.
133 away from a state high school title.
Both teams Well-coached saints.
Yeah, no doubt about it.
No doubt about it.
And mainly again, the difference is the free throw line tonight in this ballgame.
But, you know, we've seen some great coaches saw Coach Boyd last night when his fourth championship and Andy Martin winning several at North Cross and now when one won greater Christian.
That's very impressive.
Oh, look like an elbow there.
We both saw it out from the corner.
Three pointer no good control by Brogdon and backup for the big guy easy layup an easy shot and Robert Carter just as impressive as the game goes on but this is a Spartan coronation with a man up and a little reverse little out of control.
With a minute to go, Andy Martin takes a deep breath.
It's okay, Coach.
This one's over now.
Roger with the rebound and he'll go to the line and telling the coach it's over.
He won't believe it.
Really?
Here's that final horn.
We saw Coach Boyd stomping his foot with 10 seconds to go last night.
His team up big.
And if you're a coach and you take it seriously, you want your guys playing right down to the final seconds doing what they're supposed to do because you never can tell when the situation is going to demand that they execute.
There's a big story greater Atlanta Christian 25 to 33 well 25 for 34 now but 17 points difference.
Yep.
From the line and a 12 point difference in the game setting it up as good.
7461 Double-A Boys High School Championship will go to greater Atlanta Christian And there you see Mr. Abbott's mom and his sister Teresa holding up pictures of Boy Bear.
That is funny you mention the babies here.
Well, this started out it really as well play the game as I've seen in a lot of years of her.
Both teams on their game and some foul trouble obviously for Thomasville with Willie Clayton who's a sophomore and I'm guessing we'll be back here the free throws the discipline and down the stretch I made a huge difference.
Yeah I think the experience, you know, Coach Tillman tried to downplay it a little bit, this young team.
But I think experience makes a difference in a state championship game and unfortunate for Willie Clayton.
This is not a deep team.
Thomasville is a coach with six or seven players.
And when you lose, you know, Clayton's 20 something points for a good stretch of the ballgame it's it's going to present big problems.
You got to give Carter a lot of credit for keeping his team in this ballgame, this Bulldog team as a shocker up three sophomores in the starting lineup.
So chances are they'll get another look at this arena and keep it in by Dozier.
And to be fair, I mean, Thomasville Central is down six or seven, eight points a couple of times.
It had threes go down in the bucket and come back out.
And then for couple of those dropped and you got a whole different scenario.
But, you know, that happens in every ballgame because for greater Atlanta Christian with some talent coming back as we go down the finals the Cavs Southwest to grab a winner and girls for a champion Mayes losing to Miller Grove 67 to 34 oh 35 excuse me.
RHODEN in a sensational game that we saw, loses to Norcross 76 to 63.
That was exciting.
And of course, then the score indicates Melton over West Lake, a game that we did an injury there and who knows what would have happened but a winner by ten and three eight, that was Atlanta over Gwinnett, 41 to 14.
But those wheelchair athletes get out there are simply amazing here.
Those cats taking charges, running into each other, going for the loose balls.
Here's the class, A boys championship.
So Wesleyan a winner.
And there you see the class, AA Boys, Wesleyan, a winner over.
WHITFIELD And then Buford Over Vidal.
You had a game played earlier this evening, 5238.
So you've got this one, all of us in the books.
We've got another couple of games coming your way on GPB, so we hope you stay with us.
Spartans to inbound the ball.
It looks like they may get an easy layup here in this thing as it is.
Brogdon finishing off a pretty good night We'll go back the other way along the quarter and just about the final score now we count down the last 30 seconds for Double-A championship.
It is Atlanta Christian School and I think they just let him go of fouling.
Yes, Paul Dawson controls the ball.
No foul.
He'll go to the line.
He's frustrated.
He gets frustrated.
Yeah.
I've always thought that, you know, there comes a time when you just don't foul it because sometimes players are frustrated they might make a harder foul and you want to see somebody get hurt.
But Coach Tillman not willing to concede.
And you can't blame for that.
Well, that's Coach Tillman.
Let me see, guys, get some action in the high school final game.
And that's probably why he had his guys foul.
Let some guys get on the floor in front of the the folks Josh Davis comes in he's all around junior so he'll be back there you see some hugs and the job well done just not enough tonight.
It's pretty much a coach shooting night all around for the Bulldogs.
Look at their field goal percentage later, but their free throw percentage is probably worse than their field goal percentage.
But neither one was really where they wanted to be this evening.
But give Greater Atlanta Christian's defense credit for that.
They changed two zones and played some man to man stuff and they just did a good job of mixing their defenses up.
Coach Martin mentioned his bench and congrats to your Double-A championship team as well.
