It's the boys Double-A basketball championship featuring the Decatur Bulldogs and the Wilco Warriors.
And good evening, everybody, and welcome to our continuing coverage of championship weekend here on TV, the Double-A championship featuring Decatur.
They've won four championships over the years, 1957, 1970, 1980 and 1982.
So it's been 20 years since they've last won a championship.
Meantime, Wilco has won two championships in the last three years, 1999 2000.
But they did it in single-A.
They jumped to Double-A last year and made it to the semifinals.
Now they're playing for their third title in the last four years.
The two guys to call this one courtside are Bobak and Steak SHAPIRO.
Guys, thanks very much, Jim.
And both a contrast and styles, to say the least, Tonight between Wilco educated two great traditions, but two teams that go after it in a very different way.
Steak, We've got about five votes, 6000 people in the gym tonight, and I think they're going to see a great game.
First of all, two absolutely fantastic coaches and opposing styles.
It's going to be up and down, kind of like two college teams as we know it today.
Not a lot of size, a lot of athletic ability.
Yeah, Wilco will play 10 to 12.
Oh, they go 10 to 12 deep to Carter playing about seven guys and just try to use their three point shooting.
There's number ten 710 Shepard Green for dictator he says six to God maybe some college football coaches here in the gym because he's a great wide receiver very athletic plays inside or out.
They also go to Fulmer Cunnington who's six one.
He's a shaker, a driver, a scorer.
And Omar really does the dirty work for Decatur.
Yeah.
Omar Carter, by the way, talking to some Division one programs, North Carolina, Asheville, also talking to, I guess, southern Mississippi about playing basketball there.
Yeah.
All right the Gators starting lineup is Shepard Green David Harbin Quin Johnson, Evan Jones and Omar Covington.
Yeah that's a Decatur they had to cater bulldogs starting five Wilco warriors remember they have their starting five but they go a lot deeper than that.
We'll get to that in a second.
Let's talk about their key guys.
Yeah that's six three Clifford Hill he's I talked to coach about him He says he's a shooter and a border and then they also go with a Terence Smith on the wing also backs up at point guard and the key word with him is intensity.
Yeah Terrance averaged 12 a game with six assists.
Does a lot.
Number 23 in the semifinal against Calhoun.
He goes for 16 and you got to watch for him as well as the depth on Wilco, which could be a factor.
Both They think they can wear him down the West Coast starting lineup is as follows Bernardo golfing.
He's you see right there.
Jarrod Emery, obviously we told you about the Sean King playing up front the center position 511 junior then Clifford Hill Bo you talked about him six three senior and then Terence Smith, a senior at 511 but both Wilco as we talked about going 1012 detail.
Presti throughout, they have an unbelievable tradition, 30 and old ranked number one in the state in Double-A.
And they feel like this is their destiny.
You know, at single-A, Beau, they won two titles in 1980, 1999 and 2000 2001.
They jump up to Double-A, they lose in the semis, but they're used to this atmosphere to cater What an emotional time for them.
They're back here in Decatur is here.
Carter Wilson, their coach, is here for the fourth time.
He was here in 70 as a player, won the championship under Roger Kizer and Bob Rinehart in 82, was an assistant under Bob Rhinehart, was back here with Tucker a few years ago and now, of course, tonight.
Here's their road to the final watch in Wilkes White County.
Cavalier and Randolph Clay all go down to the Decatur Bulldogs.
It has been a great run for them in that Randolph play Game 5651, a barnburner in the semifinals the other night for Wilkinson County.
The early blowouts, 7751 over Seminole County, Vidalia 8163 beat Terrell 6459.
And similarly, the semifinal game was that close to 6966 against Calhoun, and that was La Reggie Jackson's late foul shots that got it done for Wilco.
Let's pick up the starting lineup for the starting lineup first for Decatur at four six foot one, senior number 4204, Arlington go Wilkinson down at forward, a six foot one senior number 21, but not for the forward number ten.
A six foot two senior suffered three down and forward coming to a six foot three junior.
Joe here at center number 12, a six foot three George Gershwin.
So far.
Oh, oh, oh, Well, that's a Tony at center number 11, a five foot 11 junior Taylor, right guard from 11, a five foot junior, David Kirby for four.
Welcome to County up guard for 42, a six foot three junior Well he'll Joe Carter guard number 21, a six foot sophomore Heavy Joe for Wilkinson County Guard 23 five foot 11 senior Harris film to Taylor is coached by Coach Carter Wilson.
Well, all righty Double-A high School boys Championship game get ready to get underway.
Steak SHAPIRO and bobble head courtside.
We'll take a break and come back.
For all the action in what should be a great matchup for the state title one, maybe funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball championships is provided in part by the following You're watching the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships on TBS and take those Steak SHAPIRO and ball back.
Bobak Back here in making the boys championship, let's go to Jon Nelson with a a story on this Decatur Bulldog team.
You look at the Decatur Bulldogs.
They wanted to be introduced as a team.
They went out as a team.
And I got part of the team here with me, Navy and Old Gold class of 19.
All right.
The elevator from Decatur, Herb White.
How does this feel for you being here under the big top?
John, I don't think I've ever won a team to win a game or that I wasn't playing in myself.
This is unbelievable for the city of Decatur, of course.
And after that, a lot of people saw the article in the paper today about the young woman, young lady Sarah Wolfe with Cancer Indicator.
And I tell you, it's Lucky for the Wolves, because if we had seen that article earlier, there'd be a camera in their house right now watching them.
And obviously, it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight.
The dog, both for Sarah and for your team today.
Exactly.
And I hope, you know, it's a tough situation to be this emotionally involved before the game.
A lot of energy gets spent.
But I think this crew can live up to it should be a great game.
Any other expectation that you have for this game here today?
None other than the barnburner that you're expecting?
No, I played one of these in 65.
I talked to these guys before the game a few minutes, said, hey, you guys are already winners.
Whatever happens today is not going to change that.
What other connections are there that I don't know about here with you in Decatur and Carter Wilson, my brother played with Carter in 71 on a state championship team.
They won it then.
All right.
Bone steak, the game is on.
The game is years.
All right.
We'll call with the tip.
And again, bow our heart to breaking story and the cover, the AJC.
We'll talk about that a little bit later on.
We'll call getting into their offense first minute underway here in Macon, driving the base.
High shot is off the mark.
Rebound up and good turnout golf the senior and what goes up to is it not a good sign for the kid when they can take you off the dribble.
Right that just like that right off the they get right to the front of the hoop.
Evan Jones only a sophomore running two point great three point shooters.
Watch the corner.
If they could get open from three, they can be deadly.
They're down to nothing early on the wing with Quin Johnson back out to Shepherd Green.
Shepherd green from the wing falling jumper off the man rebound Faulkner goes to Wilco.
Wilco controls they lead to nothing fast break attempt here we'll go back the other way and we got a call offensive foul calls as Meshach King the 511 junior out of control good D by the Carter beginning of the game.
Everybody's a little bit tense.
Everybody's got the adrenalin flowing, trying to do too much.
But you saw the way Wilkinson County move the ball up the floor.
They really pressure.
You try to attack every instance, they got the ball, they will sub up to 3 to 4 guys every couple of minutes.
That is what Wilco is known for.
Their depth can wear teams down.
We'll see how Decatur handles it outside.
Now green track down the give given call off the mark without shot for battle Wilco ball still in the air pulled down Great rebound by the Quin Johnson call away jumper outside Does it go from college in Wilco with the board and then come back get away with a two nothing lead Terence Smith winning he'll set up the offense Terence Smith off the dribble in the lane Terence Smith up and in twice Both times his score was off the dribble, beating their man Terence Smith with a move for nothing Wilco up 634 to go first quarter to Carter needs to settle down try to get into their offense David Harman with it gives it off now Shepard Green on the right block looking inside and the Quin Johnson has problems later in the post he loses it out of bounds and to Carter playing tight early ball yeah coach Wilson told me look, when Johnson is the difference in this team being under 500 a year ago and being where they are today.
He's a hustler.
He makes it all happen for them.
Got a quickness early for Terence Smith, the senior.
He's been a part of championship basketball for a few years here in Wilco, Terrence on the block, wide open on the screen and he missed the bunny rebound.
His fight for We're going to jump off a cliff Hill won't miss too many of those.
He's a senior, both leading scorer for Wilco.
I don't think he can believe how wide open he was.
No.
Again, the adrenaline stakes.
And he in fact, he hesitated a moment.
He thought somebody was on him.
It was a mistake in the dictator defense to allow him to get under the hoop by himself.
A lot of back screens, you see their target wide open.
David Harman went around the right block looking over there to Clint Johnson with played back outside three point attempt is Oscar Marcus Shepard Green that is his range but that does not go we'll go back on the floor nothing me trying to take control they fake the three in the lane jumper is good six nothing we'll call getting right after it That's banana ball from the senior and it's six Nothing early to Kanter yet to make a field goal a high post off those are the baseline Carrington that's a blocking foul on the baseline going against Bernardo Golson and again both Omar calling ten 13.4 a game as a senior number 42.
He's got to get into the offense so he and he tried right there and that's the second time that he challenged them off the dribble and something positive happened.
Shepard Green out now look when Johnson reset the offense Evan Jones, the sophomore out of college in college and now back on the baseline gives it off the court.
Johnson back outside to Harman having to try to set the offense he gets something going got a lot happening early for educator Carlynton with it gone down the baseline throws up yes to the gators on the board 505 to go quarter number one it is six two Wilko they come back the other way to Carter one for five from the field short there to Carter back now with it but Quin Johnson up not a green green from three no they're one for six from the floor.
We'll go with it Big boy There by Gerald Emery.
You see the athleticism early from Wilco Terence Smith looking to go baseline all the way in the hall.
Yes, but Terence Smith, the quickness off the dribble big time just absolutely incredible that quickness off the dribble across the board for Wilco versus the Yeah it seems like it right now that man defense to Carter struggling eight to the lead for Wilco Collins and a pull up from outside No rebound goes to Harvard Harmon gets it stripped away that quickness for Wilco and it will be Decatur ball but again ball it looks like quickness is a factor beating them to the loose ball state 8 to 2 Carter down We'll go trying to secure their third state title in four years.
We'll go in a 1 to 2 zone Evan Jones out to Shepard Green They look to kind of go back outside of Harvin Harvin goes now back down to Collins and Thornton it on the base goes back they flip it around, it goes out to Shepard Green, tries to reset the offense body whether he's in trouble.
Harvin fakes the three, Harvin goes back outside with it and they reset to contact Wilco all over them defensively too.
Carter Not a lot of room to operate.
Shepard Green to Collins and Carr to watch The shot goes in the baseline off balance.
That's a tough looking.
We'll go with the board.
No easy looks early for two.
Carter Here comes Wilco back the other way we'll go with it.
And he stripped outside Shepard green back the other way Shepard read his hands got a huge play for to Carter Shepard Green at halfcourt makes the steal ball and a three point play state Shepard Green is the wide receiver you see the athletic ability has he took it to the hole with a vengeance and he had no choice but to foul.
But he was not going to be denied on that drive.
Well, they tried to foul him hard enough to not give him a look.
But you see some of the strength there and they go back the other way.
It could have been a ten two game instead of a eight point game.
It's a three point game, too.
Carter getting a huge three point play there so far.
The play of the day because it's it to Carter in it and frankly they have seemed a little frazzled early on here 341 to go first quarter 8 to 5 the score Wilco leaning in the double Boys championship on TV.
Stay.
They're in the zone now.
They'll work it around, take it inside off balance.
Summer is in and out.
Rebound from for Carter has it back the other way Green with it green across halfcourt on the right block goes back outside and they'll set it up.
Evan Jones goes on the baseline to the Quin Johnson inside pass offensive foul a little out of control Shepard Green and again the quickness it will beat him to the spot Yeah and you know Carter has been great in the playoffs averaging fewer than ten turnovers per game but this this Wilco team will really tax you really pressure you make you make the right decision.
Terence Smith bringing it up court now trying to set up the offense for Wilco.
Terrence goes out on the baseline.
They fake the three how to go back outside.
Terrence Cross the right block.
Great ball movement there.
Jarell Embry It's in and out Rebound fun for Cliff Hill gets his script Carbon weather indicator comes back the other way down eight five Shepard Green now across a half court goes back outside to Evan Jones a sophomore point guard.
He looks inside the pick Johnson and he is fouled inside look like Marcus Thomas got a piece of the credit Shepard green for throwing that lob pass that was a great entry pass.
Not a lot of guys can make that pass in today's game.
Surprisingly Shepard Green had no power, no qualms about throwing that ball.
Look him down with twins numbers nine the game six boards one assist and one steal.
He hits the foul shot four to Carter 8 to 6.
We'll go broke out early with their athleticism but the Carter has hung around and now gets within one If they make this one they do it's eight seven.
That's what they do.
They hang around.
They want to make this game in the fifties to the mid sixties to have a chance to win this game.
Terence Smith back outside yet to take a three Brown stripped away by the Quin Johnson out of bounds Harmon Great play by David Harvin the junior a gutty little play Roy averaging against a two and a half a game ready to go heavy player and in a good play.
And even when he got that rebound before he brought it right out to the wing, he's not going to challenge their speed.
COLLINS hit on the baseline the Carter trying to take their first lead of the day Shepard Green back to kind of calm and wants a shot.
It's time to go back outside Shepard green three pointer no it's off again.
A contested shot.
We'll call in Shepard green space.
No open looks for the gator Wilco.
Just a great show.
Boxing out on both ends of the floor.
I don't know if the kid has a rebound yet, but he turnovers have been their bugaboo right now Shepard Green whether he wants to three or shoot it again no comment and watch the board it's knocked out of bounds and it was college you know knocked off Shepard reinforcing ball right now he that is not an open look and he's up pulling up not using the offense and we apologize to bulldog fans we do know how to spell dictated we have passed that class eight seven Wilco on top 150 to go quarter number one boys championship on the baseline it is off the mark rebound by four fouled and it's good Wilco big three point attempt by the Rocky Jackson The senior averaged ten a game 511 He had the big foul shots late to beat Calhoun I believe in LaRose on the offensive glass the athleticism on the offensive boards a factor early to oh very much an ability box out there are well-coached team both of these teams are welcome to LaRose by the way is their six man he gets a lot of minutes misses the foul shot Harvin with the board Harmon's Mr. everyplace ten seven will go on top 135 to go to Kanter goes about seven players deep They're starting to play a lot of minutes Great baseline move First time we've seen the win Johnson take over and he does there with a baseline off the glass and it's ten nine Wilco on top and they'll run their offense back outside towns look for the shot can't hit it rebound but for inside it goes to the Quin Johnson come back the other way now Shepard green with it.
Shepard looking to win the pin on the baseline.
Decatur looking to take their first lead.
Harvin goes to the baseline.
There's shepard.
Wow.
The whole no, he got there doing everything but rebound battle for and shepard green puts it in off the glass to Carter has their first lead at 1110 Here comes go back into there Here's the quickness and a reach foul the quickness an explosive it's a Terence Smith early both seems like he's the quickest guy on the court he shot from guns and that that was a calling that like by the key of crowd but I think a good call who's a reach in say anytime you reach they're going to call it on you Shepard Green exploding to the basketball did everything but finish and then the ball gets slapped around He ends up with a layup anyway the Carter up 1110 and they steal the inbounds on Mark Collingwood knocks him out of bounds will will retain possession 49 seconds to go 1110 to Carter on top we'll call an early run but they had fought back to Carter not really taking over Hopkins three and instead he forces it out there.
That was Gerald Emory and to Carter comes back the other way.
They have figured out defensively what they want to do in the paint.
Johnson In the large crowd, yes, indeed.
One big step on the Clint Johnson.
But again, not a lot of fluidity in the Wilco offense, but they don't want to take the open three.
They're forcing stuff for about the 12 to 15 foot mark on the block.
Well, they've got all they want versus Harvard as a sparkplug for the Carter and they can beat them off the dribble any time they want.
In this side, there's the wide open three and a miss big offensive rebound put back it's good Jarell Emory you see the athleticism off the glass that's been a problem for Decatur and part of that focus fresh legs is Wilco has constantly hit just no boxing out there it's 1211 to Carter down by one will go on top Ball's deflected out of bounds Great Decatur would like to hit some shots from the perimeter here.
They'd like to shoot Wilco out of that one, two, two zone in And Coach said that you know we'll stay in it until they shoot this and Bob Goins in the game also Brian call for Decatur and Mike Wheeler they go to their bench Evan Jones when it goes to the to and way outside for the three Kennedy and Adams to the end of quarter number one and athletic quarter up and down and early run for Willkommen to Carter comes fight back first quarter behind this double boys championship it's Wilco 12 to Carter 11 two We'll come back funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball championships is provided in part by the following You're watching TV bringing you the best.
You're watching the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball championships on TV.
We the Boys Championship.
We're back here in Macon.
It was a competitive first quarter.
Bo Wilco comes out in an eight two run.
As I talked about competitive I'm worn out.
They come back and look like they could take an eight point lead.
BO it was the steal at half court by Sheppard When he goes back the other way and hits a three point play made it eight five and all of a sudden what could have been an eight point game was down to three and that settled the gator down and really kept them in this game.
Well, they've got to cater Wilco has got to keep playing their game and that's their whole modus operandi.
In fact, their whole deal is volume.
Get as many shots on goal as it can go to the rack, keep it alive, put it up again.
They have five guys on the offensive glass ball.
They just keep running at you.
Wilco working their offense, trying to get a good look here.
They don't take as many threes indicator.
Terrence wanted off the dribble Nice move off the glass and in Terence Smith ball real impressed with him 12 a game is the 511 senior and he has been here since ninth grade on the Wilco team to state titles in a semifinal loss last year.
So he knows about this atmosphere.
Here comes that Wilco Press and Evan Jones, the point guard, tries to break it.
Good job by Decatur.
Getting into their offense as a coach, JD just said to turn the screws a little bit.
Let's really get into our press.
Let's get to that.
Let's make some distance here.
We'll call up 1411.
He had the Cato handle the full court pressure outside of Mike Wheeler.
He's in the game now looking to get something going.
Wheeler averaging 5.8 a game.
He's the senior there's control on the baseline Evan Jones with it again at half court defense tough by Wilkinson County they lead by three Decatur has the ball the inside turnaround jumper and that's for Quin Johnson baby right there Nice offense they run him off the screen and he hits a little 12 footer for 1413 will go on top 639 to go first quarter three point attempts off the mark rebound five four goes the other way.
Now two points Evan Jones with it for Decatur they trailed by 114 3624 to go Mike Wheeler on the bass icons had yet to get off yet but now yet to get a wide open look He's got a good job on him the goal and John's in the game for Harmon and he might have to stay in because of the quickness factor Harbaugh has really taken to school four times off the wing struggling a little bit there.
Nice baseline play goes back outside Evan Jones back on the wing not a wheeler Wheeler looking for his shot very athletic made a blocking foul on the floor and that's going to be called against Wilkinson County Marcus Thomas fouls on Marcus Thomas good switch by Mike Wheeler but number three pretty athletic kid he's also a senior here see Marcus Thomas step up he's moving definitely biggest man I need the squad is Marcus Thomas of six fouls and a steal on the other end and a foul there Oh that was put coach by the way I believe it was put on to pick up the foul is equivalent Yeah that's football too.
Quinn Johnson was offered a hand to get it up and he he denied it.
He said that's okay.
So the crowd is again Terence Smith is still there.
Quickest guy on the court so far looks like that.
Man number 23 has the ball.
We'll call these 1435 50 to go quarter number two boys championship live and make it steak SHAPIRO and Boban in the post.
They go to the Rosie Jackson and a foul called on the Quin Johnson.
Quinn reaching over the top trying to get a hand on that ball That's his third foul.
And that is not good news.
That's not good enough for Decatur in a rich file, a bad foul on Quinn Johnson.
All sit down he's got three and he's the engine room for that to decay This squad Jarell Embry back outside where they try to set up their offense every has to go out on the baseline now Dufner pulled up a shot came off the market comes to Carter back the other way a chance for Wilko to do some damage with Quinn Johnson down as well.
We'll see how this plays out.
They're not able to get in their press when Wilko scores.
Ball also gives him a chance to get in there.
PRESS Otherwise, I think Carter, you know, playing good defense, Omar Carter trying to get off a little bit and they lose it.
He is really struggling to boy defensively they in that one two to third sensation of matching up off it.
They give you the one, two, two look and they come out in the matchup and a very tough very quick move their feed very well very well conditioned quote Terence Smith went in a little bit of a force there off the winner gets his own party.
Travis, it looks like in the way that's a best shot there by Terence Smith.
He's got great quickness bone he can get to the rim but right there he kind of forced his shot just forcing too much.
The officials have got a tough game to call here.
Doing a great job.
Kevin Probes, The referee is Larry Sorrels and Tim Smith.
Let's watch his full court pressure to Carter trying to get into it and a great steal on the other end and great finish by Cliff Hill.
That's what Wilco does best.
They get you in that full court pressure.
They get the deflection and their lead scorer, Cliff Hill ball off the window.
The athleticism a63 big play for Wilkinson count might be a good time for a timeout for Carter Wilson because this is the first time they really turned up the screws hanging the screws on that full court press and the Carters having problems recognizing, in fact, they could have gone over the top, could have thrown the the baseball pass and they got something they need to collect themselves and put Phil hits the foul shot.
And here comes that pressure again from Wilco.
Five guys pressing up here.
It's a man to man pressure looks like kind of goes in the middle, goes to Wheeler, go back to the wings.
Five points.
And that's not a good throw.
They had to one one had to make something happen.
There, turned it over and then come back and compound the issue by causing a foul.
Creating a foul at the other end.
Yeah.
Not a good pass by Clyde Goins for for Brian Cole.
Look like a bowl.
A lot of times if you run the press, it's not just the fact that you get a steal, you speed up the tempo and you force them into your style of play.
That's exactly what happened on that in right now, they're playing Wilco's game and the key to his game is tempo.
And it's not turning the ball over and it's taking good high percentage shots.
Yeah, that was those are not the two guys you want in the break.
Karen Bass, Terrell Emery hits the foul shot.
They are in the penalty, but Carter needs to get something offensively.
They need to get Omar Collins an off shot is up and good Terrell Emery nice job at the line there And back comes the pressure from Wilco Straight man to man pressure Covington with it.
Here's the trap goes up the middle and they fumble with it and they break it.
Now another two on one break goes up, tries away.
Oh yeah, they get strong.
Brian Cole, They break the threat, they'll have a two on one if they're steady with it.
And two, Carter gets back in at 1915 Will Wilco up fourth 29 to go quarter number two cross the lane will go to the basket Nice finish.
Oh yeah that was John King the junior averaging ten a game and he finishes the Gators now dealing with that pressure again they go right to the middle They got three on to break those up in the baseline gone to go go handling it there was back outside and we got a foul call but boy he seems to be struggling with he's with the basketball he's very antsy just to use not catching the ball.
He's had to turn almost two turnovers now in the last three trips.
How about that finish on the other end up by the side king of working low just great quickness.
He is a very explosive basketball player Kevin Jones inbounds goes to Bryant and they'll try to set up the offense Mike Wheeler at the control post.
Back now to Evan Jones.
They set up down six 2115 but Quin Johnson on the bench, three fouls, he averages nine a game that's a big loss college and trying to get off yes Omar Collins it may be the pure shooter on the floor finally gets it going 2118 the score that's a big three for Decatur banging away with that everything was 14.
They needed that Larouci Jackson takes the three both he can't hit it falls his shot And who are they going to have here?
Hiroshi Jackson a loose ball foul.
They forced that look and they're in a penalty situation.
You didn't need to take that shot look like.
And LaRose magnified the mistake by going over the back.

Evan Jones with a foul shot 2119 So a couple of times today it looked like Wilco was ready to open this thing up a little bit and the corner has come and the miss there but in early it looks like a lane violation.
Evan Jones will get another shot at it, both 2119 and again look for a little while when Quin Johnson goes down, they get into their press like Wilco had this think where they wanted it but a big three by Omar gets it going and they feel the first perimeter shot could be key to that.
They got to go.
They've got to shoot it better from the perimeter because they're not going to beat this team off the dribble.
They got five starters.
Both.
They can shoot the three, but they've yet to really get good will up one with the basketball 334 to go second quarter Here's the three it's off the mark rebound and sportsbook great athletic play to the baseline Eric for the hands of Jarell Emery and again the athleticism you see in the road to Jacksonville maybe pressed a little bit but he gets his own board there tries to go back underneath and it goes through the hands of Jarrod Emery.
Yeah, the up tempo game is Wilco's game, but they're playing this game at about 78 RPMs.
They need that need to be about 33.
Gordon wants the three tries to go baseline.
No, look there goes back outside the gate and tries to run their offense.
They trailed by one would love to get the lead here with 307 to go in quarter number two Collingwood on the left baseline and then go back outside and try to set things up.
Evan Jones, the sophomore.
Impressive poise for a young man playing in a game of this magnitude.
The Carter Bench seeing a lot of minutes early in this game.
Wheeler With it when it loses out of bounds and again good defense good management give credit there to Thomas Smith to see the two guys open to the bench.
Wheeler and and the other kid who came in for Harvin by Goins Yeah clock going have been really struggling turnovers in the game Well coach got nine to Carter has seven to run their offense That's an outside deep three and got it Cliff Hill's showing his range the big man going outside and hitting the three big shot there back the other way Wheeler with it three on to break does not see the hard calling on the other end.
Collins is going back outside Evan Jones trying to set the offense goes to calling and he wants that shot too and it's off the mark rebound block for Wilco has it they're up four trying to get more 2 minutes to go second quarter back the other way Wilco pull up jumper There's that tempo look and there's Thomas Smith with the jumper.
There's a volume we're talking about.
You know I'd like to see is shots on goal for Wilco compared to dictating back the other way Mike Wheeler a big jumper 2622 They have a three on two break every time.
If they break the press through the middle two wheeler able to convert on a few of those opportunities back the other way.
Wilco heating up a little bit here.
2620 to 130 to go quarter number two nice steal from behind by the corner wheeler with it outside of Collins and Condit wants that shot he goes baseline takes the jumper go back outside try to set the offense we were having just a three way on air ball on that one and again he forced a little bit didn't set his feet, didn't square up Matt Smith with the board Wilco comes back the way they lead 2620 to 119 to go quarter number two, the men's double boys championship.
Both teams in the penalty shoot outside jumper three in and out, rebound by four.
Here comes the gator.
The Bulldogs would love to get within two with one minute to go in the half Callington wants it back wide open.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
My colleague did.
Yeah.
Up and under.
We got him in an isolation on the left wing and he just took it with a vengeance.
Well, he may be the most talented offensive player on the court.
We said it before, but look at the explosiveness.
With time, it goes in the basket.
40 seconds to go.
It looks like Wilco.
A hope for They want the lead at halftime.
They lead it 26 to 24.
But a big whoop there for Collins.
And if they can get him off, then Decatur is going to be right in this thing is a big possession right here 29 seconds to go and with the kid who would be very happy to go in as sloppily as they played with that down only two a big possession here.
15 seconds on the clock.
Wilco will get into their offense with about ten left.
Go Terence Smith with it Terence Smith looking on the baseline jumper by Thomas Smith is all going to let it go out of bounds and that'll be the end of the first half.
We got a 4/10 of a second ago.
Washington Orochi Jackson missing the jumper there.
I'm sorry, it was a Rosie Jackson at 4/10 to go to Carter.
I'll be happy to go to the locker room with this thing at 2624.
And it has been a hard fought, fun first half.
I would throw it deep here.
You don't want anything touched by Wilco and just throwing up at the basket to throw it through.
There It is.
Good football.
And tell me you forgot to start the clock.
That was 4/10 of a second.
All right, John Nelson, as one of the coaches, let's go to him right now here with Aaron Junior.
Okay, you start with the 1 to 2.
You had problems that then they go, then you go and press them out of the building here in the second quarter, you know, they lost two of their starters early.
So it felt like an opportune time to press, but really didn't get anything from it.
So They benefited in first half and then offensively you start to hit the threes.
Also as the second quarter wore on to get the two point lead here, well, they did what they needed to.
There's a close ball game.
They didn't have starters on the floor in the first half.
So again, they came out very good in this first half energy to congratulations on the first half.
He's got 16 minutes and a two point lead bone steak.
Back to you.
All right.
You see it there, man, Those 113 games in his fourth year, not a bad deal for Doctor Aaron Jeter, Junior.
It is what we thought it would be a very competitive up and down first half.
Wilkinson County leads by two.
We'll come back.
You're watching Georgia Public Television funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following You're watching the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships on TV.
And welcome back to Championship Weekend here on TV.
There you see the halftime score.
Wilco leads to 2624 over Decatur in a fantastic ball game here as prime time TV is going well with the basketball championships here on TV.
We go down stairs now to John Nelson.
John, you know, it's that time of day where I sit there and I talk about my academic career or lack thereof here with Jacqui.
I've got to ask, what's it like having practically the entire town here?
That's what it looks like.
Was it a situation where the last person here turned out the lights?
I think so.
When I left town, I left about four in and think I would get here.
But you have to understand who works in county.
This the biggest thing going May Bob's Diner in our ballgames.
Okay.
And what's the life like?
It may Bob's and with Wilco High School you talk about how you guys have wrapped everybody around in the basketball team these past four years have been great successes.
Well, Mr. Saka superintendent here was principal for three years.
I've just been here this year, so they're trying to give me a, I think, a good present, a good, good beginning.
But the kids play so hard.
They're cardiac kids.
I think if you've seen the last two ballgames, you understand.
But I'm real proud because there's no stars on the team.
They play extremely hard.
All right.
You got a great escort here, Mr. Stark.
Congratulations, Mr. Weaver.
Congratulations.
Thanks for time.
We'll send it back over and we'll come back in a little bit with Decatur side of the story.
All right.
Thanks, John.
And on the court behind us right now, are the triple-A boys warming up?
Mitchell Baker, the Mitchell Baker Eagles taking on the cross key Indians.
That's going to be coming up next on TV.
And let's go back courtside now and Steak SHAPIRO and ball back for the first half highlights.
Thanks very much, Jim.
And again, Bo at 26, 24 at the half World Cup with a two point lead and the game pretty much playing true to form.
I thought getting Omar colleagues in off a little hits that three was was crucial.
Let's look at the first half stats to Carter shooting it pretty good almost 50% from the field up nine for 20 like you said that Wilco get more opportunities 11 for 26 to shoot 45% Wilco at 42%.
But look at the one for eight that will close able to hold to cater to from three point land, one for ten on the other end.
And they need that club shooting the threes.
The key stat here is the turnovers are eight for Decatur.
They've been averaging fewer than ten for a game in the playoffs.
Yeah, they've got to really deny that in the second half rebounds.
I'm really surprised that the kid has 11 boards because I thought Wilkinson County probably had about you 22 to about six.
Yeah, well it seemed like that because the way they pounded the offensive glass at times.
But again, Decatur, you know, hanging around doing just enough and making enough plays, I think they feel like, you know, they didn't have two of their starters on the floor for most of the first half.
Shepard Green and of course Larkin Johnson and he gets the third foul and they're still right there to Carter there's Omar Carlynton who's got seven.
But Quin Johnson was six and he was on the on the bench with three fouls and there's Wilkinson County the big guy Cliff Phil he's our leading scorer with six also Terence Smith, his quickness number 23 saw him run it The point with six and two other guys had four.
Here are some halftime highlights You see the getting the early turnover there and that was created by Harmon who they took out of the game because of a lack of quickness.
On the defensive effort Green with the finish ball That was a huge play And then you see the athleticism of the Quin Johnson going baseline and here they are trying to take him off the dribble and that's one of the the threes that went that is the only three that went for Wilkinson County that's Cliff Hill a leading scorer and he's got inside outside potential and then the pull off jumper off the window and we'll call win on that a little run there it looked like their Thomas Smith was going to get them going and there's Carter with the move in the first half that was on there.
Yeah it was late.
That was the first time they had an opportunity to take somebody off the dribble.
First time they had an isolation play on this floor.
And by the way, you know, Decatur, when Wilco went into that full court pressure, they had opportunities every time down they broke it and they had two on one or three on to break, only converted one time out of that.
Not a good press overall for Wilco.
They only got the one turnover ball and it was a big turnover because they converted a three point play.
I think it was Cliff Hill who got three point play.
But you know, the reality is they're going to have to make a decision.
You know, Doctor Aaron Zito, head coach here, stayed in that pressure defense because he giving up easy baskets on the other end.
Second half action Coming up Steak SHAPIRO ball back live at courtside and make it the eight points championship.
We're coming back and watching Georgia public television funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following You're watching member supported TV, your PBS station bringing you the best.
You're watching the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships on TV and Steak SHAPIRO and Bo Bok back here at the Double-A Boys final live in Macon.
And let's go now to Carter Wilson, head coach of Decatur.
He is with John Nelson.
Thanks, Nikki.
CARTER you and I were talking despite the foul trouble, you're only two down.
Yeah, we're down two right now.
We didn't shoot the ball as well as we wanted to in the first half.
And with Shepard GREENE sitting as long as he did and look at Johnson sitting as long as we did, we feel pretty fortunate right now.
It's very important for us to come out in the first 5 minutes of the third quarter and establish ourselves on the offensive end.
And we've got to do a better job on the defensive end, especially rebounding the basketball.
I know you were trying to find a way to fight there 1 to 2 by work.
The high post a little bit.
Yeah.
We moved somebody into the high post and that has helped some.
We just got to get after these guys right now.
Thanks, Carter.
Go back to its second half.
Let's go back to bone Steak for quarter number three.
Thanks very much, John.
I think you know that first half went by lickety split quick.
But you know what's amazing about it?
Every sequence, every moment in that first will be remembered by every kid on the floor.
Every kid that stepped out on that floor will remember this for the rest of their life.
Yeah, it's a state championship game.
It's over in an hour and 15 minutes or so.
When we were talking.
This is a moment that every one of these kids, a replay and replay, a miss shot and made basket and it literally is over, as we said, 75 minutes.
And you know what's amazing about you?
It's a packed gym.
The kids remember every single little thing.
And when they get to be my age, they're a little bit better than they really were.
Yeah, I've heard you talk about it outside of my man.
All right, The Carter will inbound and they are down two.
And as you heard the coach talk about the Quinn Johnson Shepherd going to stalwarts not seeing time in that second quarter to the foul trouble Not a lot of time.
Evan Jones at either point he's the sophomore was back outside of Collins and Collins had exploded to one big basket late that really helped the Carter.
He's always looking to get his shot off, though it's not quite so frantic now.
It took a whole half.
Yeah.
For the Carter to settle down.
I mentioned Wilko probably has also came out a little tight both teams ball and also you see the 148 from three four to Carter, one for ten from Rocco that shows some nerves Jumper missing out one for nine from great big rebound though fought for by the Quin Johnson jump ball I think it's a good ball I think it's a good ball and it's unfortunate but the key to this is one of the few offensive boards that they've gotten post Shepard Green the senior really struggling he's our leading scorer at 14.9.
He has not had a good night so far and he is forcing the three a little bit.
But again, he's capable of getting hot from there but to Carter at one for nine from three if they look back and wonder why they're down it's real simple.
That's why they're not converting.
Otherwise.
Pretty good half of the field.
Well, go with the basketball with a two point lead.
They'll try to set things up.
Wilko being deliberate here.
They want to continue, come out, play them and see what happens when they do.
Terence Smith to look over to and turns it over the back the other way.
Shepard Green with a careless pass there by Terence Smith on the baseline back outside of Shepard Green Shepard green trying to get his shot off Nice pick and roll here Good pass and he funny inside the Quin Johnson can't finish it We'll go back the other way the get to have a hoop early early third quarter 2624.
The kid has gotten some good looks though they're playing much better than they did all of the first half with Sean King to the basket.
What do we have?
Offensive foul, the shot King not doing much so far.
He's a junior 511 averaging ten a game in both.
Great defense by Omar Collins and getting the position on the baseline and holding great defensive play 2624 Wilco by two nobody has scored yet in quarter number two, somebody's going to have to get off from three two you know that the kid who will look to open things up from there.
Shepard green weather up top.
That's his shot and he's off again.
He's struggling.
But again, as I always told you before, your great shooting, you got to keep shooting.
That's it.
Terence smith with it up top.
Terence Smith A quickness goes up in the baseline.
Little pull up jump shot from the baseline is off goes back outside and it is Wilko Ball and the arm bar in in the base of part of his spine right there that should have been called Cheryl Emery back up to the baseline shot missed rebound by for an easy two through opportunities against Wilkinson County otherwise they're going to come back Oh yeah they're going to get easy basket LaShawn King coming from the weak side getting that rebound ball and again neither to which neither team shooting at all this third quarter both teams coming out real cold 28, 24, five, 22 to go quarter number two Collins and Howard just dropped the basketball back the other way.
It's a double dribble that's a big turnover.
Jarell Embry coming back the other way.
It looked like they got a big break, kind of just turned it over ball and it looked like a six point lead the other way a vocal could convert but it's 2824 to Carter yet to make a basket yet to really get anything going here in quarter number three and a double a boys championship live in Macon state Super Bowl back on TV Harmon now born to be a kick ball looked like the shot King kicked it only two points scored so far ball in the third quarter and we're out a few minutes into a 2824 Wilkinson County trying to win their third state title the last four years.
So the points scored by Wilkinson County his way said the kid has had a couple of good looks, but they don't give you points for looks.
You've got to convert them against the club like this offense.
Yeah.
Scary pass by the quick to turn turned over now and the other way and a foul the Carter just in a rough ball offensively yeah they don't know they didn't know what do with the ball that trip they tried to force it in it was not there the entry pass was not there the presentation was not there in the post.
I'll tell you, Mike Wheeler gave some good energy off the bench.
I know he's not a starter.
Also quite Goins, I mean good energy.
And it seemed like oh off the window it's good And the foul big shot for the shocking he had the weakside rebound early pulls up with the jumper off the window I hope he called glass on that and he catches it off there for a three point play.
David Harmon hit him in the air.
Marvin just got him right on the wrist.
And you know he didn't call?
No, he did not call it call time.
They're going to get that anyway.
Got it, Mike Wheeler in the game.
But some of the energy I talked about him a place.
David Harmon And that was an important trip because you don't want these guys to create any distance and they have 3124 to cater down seven yet to score in quarter number three.
If the championship goes to Wilkinson County before this night is over, they'll look at this stretch early third quarter, both as maybe the key to the game.
Somebody has got to make something happen for Decatur.
The Bulldogs struggling Carter Wilson trying to get the fifth state title for the dictator Blue Dogs.
But right now they can't get anything going offensively.
Give Wilcox credible fabulous man to man defense in the halfcourt great tonight right there you see try to force up their rebound it's five for oh they get it back and it's up and in to Sheppard Reed sometimes better to be lucky than good ball he forces that shot in the lane he gets the flick and next thing you know it's back in his hand and he gets a three pointer and he's been in that position.
So he's been inside.
He's been outside.
He knows enough.
There's a lot of action around him.
See how he's very patient?
Yeah, very patient right here.
Yeah.
And he missed and they needed that.
He gave that little hesitation, got Cliff Hill up in the air and then he laid it in because he knew Cliff Hill was coming with a hammer.
3126 broke up wide open.
Baseline jumper.
Yes.
The shot King has taken over in quarter number three.
That's his third field goal.
Ball.
And boy, has he been a big factor here.
Market down as it does his toes are on the line but they move the ball very well.
Does the defense keep up with it?
And what Wilko has done is taken away that high post offense from Decatur.
There's that explosive Mr. Collins in going to the basket and he gets fouled.
Almost had the three point play.
But this is what we're talking about with Wilko Ball the Shaun King good quiet in that first half.
All of a sudden he comes out, he hits the deep jumper here, he gets the weakside rebound, he hits the penetration off the glass on the jumper and it comes out of nowhere.
Carlynton misses the foul shot.
They hit these fouls.
They were five for five in the first half, but they're all four two in the second half.
The foul on Collins and seven points make it eight 3327 Wilco Trying to end dictators dreams of pulling off the upset against the number one team in 30 and old Wilco.
They have not lost this season.
They're into their offense.
Yes.
Terrence to the basket.
Good Stop.
And no basket, no continuation.
That's not Jason Kidd.
This is in the NBA.
Doesn't get the continuation but again by the quickness down Smith any time he wants, take whoever he wants on the floor off the dribble Mike Wheeler with a foul and he'll be underneath the basket for will call block right there by Evan Jones They come back the other way three on to break outside pull up Jumper Shepard three Airball rebound fight for Wilco Hatch They'll come back the other way It's stolen by green three ducks it whole big turnover by Wilco but John King loses the handle and Shepard Green says I can make a dunk Let's make this thing easier.
Decatur fans are on their feet.
Can they make a run and throw it on Wilco?
3329 to 15 to go Quarter number two Inside Wide open pass Cliff Hill Great.
Back side three.
We can't lose him.
He can't lose them like that.
You got to you got to see the back side.
Yeah.
Great back side screen double.
But second time tonight it was a wide open look at the kid who thought they were going to run here fake basket to give up.
3529 Shepard green with it goes back up top to Evan Jones indicator tries to get something out of the half court to paint Johnson back to Green deflected Wheeler goes outside there to separate green Shepard green going in the lane collected Quin Johnson foul underneath and they'll get it under the basket 227 to go but not a real flow to this game no there hasn't been at all There hasn't been at all and I think that's what the kid has got to do.
They've had trouble making the entry pass with.
I think they do have to be patient and get that because that's not being able to shoot it from the outside.
I think they're one for 11 for three kinds of misses that three back the other way.
This could be a big bucket here if Wilco can get something out of the halfcourt and Terence Smith brings it back up top, they lead by six ball pick possessions.
Cliff Hill goes back outside on the base.
That's Cameron Smith.
It's blocked.
It goes out of bounds.
That's some side of the road to Jackson.
Again, going to the basket and getting deflected Well that's great ball movement now Wilkinson County's let's see that conditioning it may kick in here Decatur yeah I doubt it.
They've been up and down like this against anybody This year LaRose Jackson misses gets his own board lays it up and in he's their best player off the bench on the road to Jackson the senior 511.
He gives Wilco an eight point lead 145 to go Decatur fans on their feet trying to get something out of the halfcourt.
Big possession now three pointer three.
Yes, there it is.
They really needed that Shepard green in the fourth and senior drains it from three.
It's a five point game no look pass off for that high post 3732 made it they need that outside jumper is off the mark by Wilco going to foul on a hold underneath Cliff Hill ball pulls up three we saw him hit that in the first half but again the offensive rebounding of Wilco Yeah that's just not aggressive rebounding on dictate his part I mean you had to put a body on him You could not let him come across the key like that.
Gerald Emery in the game right now.
Also, Thomas Smith comes in, he'll replace the Shot King.
And what a fabulous second quarter.
How about the third quarter, the shot clock put together LaRose Jackson with it up top to set up the offense ROWSEY with it goes back outside Pull up jumper no good for Joel Emery and a stupid foul there and I think he knows it Mirotic Jackson little anxious there Yeah the kid will come back the other way 3730 to the Decatur Bulldogs both only down by five You heard their head coach at halftime say we feel lucky that we're in this game and they still going to feel that way.
Oh, without a doubt.
I mean, a bucket here and there very much in the game.
Yeah.
3732, one minute to go.
Quarter number three boys championship TV Wheeler gives it on the baseline there Shepard Green Green wants his luck and a hold aggressive defense but they call for a hole that again Lauren Jackson in the middle of the action 009 55 seconds to go Collins here with on the baseline goes back inside it Shepard green screen in the lane off balance off to wheeler winner pulls up 20 no rebound 44 of those out of bounds going to be will call ball up shot for Wheeler kind of it was a close shot yeah you know he's really not the shooter game no that's not his game but here's the 2212 it is handed to you is starting to distance themselves now you said it felt like that in the first half.
Now it's starting to look like that.
A little bit explosive.
Move to the basket.
Great pass inside up and in credit, Terence Smith goes inside and a great dish to give Wilco the seven point lead 3932 When you talk about the most valuable player for Williamson County through three quarters is Terence Smith.
Omar Khan just can't hit Bones Affected Locos got it back.
They come back the other way a chance to convert here and go up by nine.
Good pressure by the Decatur now they get a wide open look on the baseline Coleman No Thomas Smith wanted to put a dagger in the Bulldogs and that is in the quarter number three.
Would that have been huge but would have made it a ten point game?
But the Decatur Bulldogs trying to end the undefeated run for the Wilkinson County Warriors at 38 know they're going to have to get it going in quarter number four.
We'll come back.
Funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following You're watching the NCAA Boys and Girls basketball championships on TBS.
Back at the Make it Coliseum steak SHAPIRO and vote Bobcats Wilkinson County one quarter away from their third state title in four seasons.
What is Jon Nelson out of courtside was eavesdropping Carter Wilson here at the beginning of the fourth quarter he said everything's all right.
But he wanted to look his players square in the eye and have him look and square back and tell them that he's not seeing the defensive effort that he wants and to get seven points back in 8 minutes.
That's what it's going to have to start the defensive end, even though they do get the ball first here in corner number four, guys, 8 minutes now of hustle and guts.
Carter Wilson, by the way, head coach of the Carter and now that's the huddle they were in down by seven as John Nelson mentioned legendary coach really done a super job with this club tremendous they need to turn it on here in quarter number four and start here with Shepard Green off balance jumper no good rebound five for the quick Johnson up and in he fouled Oh yeah the Quin Johnson on the offensive glass and backs it in and his Shepard Green continues to struggle from the outside ball That's a big basket in rebounding right now he's got an ankle and then when he came down he came down on the side of his foot from that jump shot and he's got to walk that off.
Yeah that would be devastating for the Kennedy.
They would have no shot if Shepard Green went out.
It's kind of you know, you got something wrong with that.
Get along right then.
That's four fouls on Cliff Hill by the way Ball who is their leading scorer and again off the mark at the foul line not a good half second half two with five and five in the first half not the case second half 3934.
We'll go by five at the basketball there 30 you know, try to put away a state title in the Cup day.
The play man down the stretch here early in the fourth quarter.
Rocky Jackson with the ball a little bit of trouble could get hammered by Omar Khadr.
No call there back outside, Terence Smith trying to set the offense.
Smith goes back outside will jump fake shot in the lane up in and go oh Jarell every 263 junior with a big basket for Wilco Whoa that's a nice athletic play Look at him in the win.
Here he comes right now.
Off the dribble and puts up a nice soft touch, gets a roll on the rim, looks like soft rims.
And they needed that.
That was shot.
That was the key.
Let it over Might look like contact may ahead position maybe been in no foul either way but it's not going to take his way and Carroll Hammer hits the foul shot and we got it well as an eight point game 718 to go to Carter needs to find a way to bowl big time Ankle problems for Shepard Green He is laboring and I don't think he wants to come out of the game.
But it has been a very tough oh, and back the other way too.
Carter may need a timeout right here ball.
I think so because Shepard Green did not want to hold the ball right there.
He wanted to get rid of it.
He saw the defender on the hip of the man he was throwing the ball to and just wanted to zip it.
Open it up.
That was ball's uncatchable.
Shepard green leaving now Shepard green telling his coach I'm fine didn't want to come out of the game Mike Wheeler saying I got you but now you see it.
I don't think we'll see shepard Green again today.
Ball really came down real bad on that ankle.
We'll go a chance to open this thing up Terrell Emery in the lane little pump fake forward away Yes Jarell every silky sweet and Wilco can take it 650 to go the 30 and oh Warriors has got this crowd on their feet and they blood.
Timeout bulldogs Bo Jarell Embry for the two biggest baskets of the game No educator gets the early basket by Quin Johnson They missed the foul shot would have got him within four and then back the other way Jerome Murray hits the soft little three point play and then hits that jumper and now it's a ten point game.
Yeah.
With those two baskets, Wilko has gotten to decay.
There's a Valentine just a little bit.
I don't like that body language.
I don't like their attitude.
Right now.
They've got just a little bit of a defeatist attitude, a great time out by Carter Wilson.
He's got to get his guys pumped up and say, Come on, guys, we're only down ten here.
We've got 642 to go.
That's why they pay me the big bucks.
Shepard Green back in the game, laboring big time on that ankle.
But you know what the state final.
Shepard green is a senior.
He's not going to end it by being on the bench.
Shepard green to the basket.
Tough, tough shots way off the mark.
Ball deflected goes out of bounds to carter ball.
You get the feel for shepard green bow.
He's been such a leader for this team after 15 a game really has been heart and soul of this club.
Not a guy over 63 indicate his club to be here where they are shows the way they get after it, but it may be coming to an end.
We talked about him being a wide receiver.
Can you see the way he goes after balls with his athletic ability?
He looks like curry both playing basketball here.
Out of control.
Move there.
You haven't seen that from Evan Jones.
He is a sophomore now.
That kind of forcing things in Wilco.
Sensing a chance to put this away.
Let's see what they run out offensively.
He just stopped a little baseline they and they do the king the shot King having a great second half ball He's got eight points now I believe, just in the second half and a 12 point lead.
Evan Jones back outside, they go to Shepard Green.
I'm going to follow me.
Will I stop?
What are you saying?
No, I didn't say.
When you start how I usually say, well, you start to think you were actually imploring the cater to try to get back in this thing.
That's his style.
Neatest stuff.
But you were just badgering me, which I'm used to on the radio.
I wanted you to stop separate on to the title shot here.
Just talk about a big rebound up and can't get it to fall.
Omar Collins is in that kind of night.
Great hustle by the they come back outside Collins and with it ever Jones with three that's a good hustle Quin Johnson out of bounds ball to Carter just not able to hit from the perimeter now Diallo effective Evan Jones up the hill one of the few shots he's taken a coach told me a little bit of Hollywood Henderson in him with a great point guard from Decatur who went to Georgia.
He's not been on his game tonight.
I think Wilkinson is doing a great job with taking the two players.
There's Marshon King and there's an MVP tonight.
Bo It's that man, number 11, a junior 511 average, ten a game.
And his explosiveness go into the basket has been the factor and Wilco opening up a big timely corner who can't fall here comes won't go back the other way That's Jarell Embry with the basketball he's also had a big fourth quarter comeback around the wing the shot kick he wanted to pull the trigger on that three but Wilko very smartly takes it back outside the Rocky Jackson with it and he'll set up the offense 14 point lead for Wilko with the Carter Bulldogs dreams may be coming to an end tonight.
And the undefeated season looks for the Warriors back outside.
They run out of pocket Steal by Evan Jones back the other way Jones loses it goes out of the baseline three point shot.
Shepard wants it.
He pulls up no wide open look just cannot get it to go.
He has really struggled tonight though He turned yeah back the other way.
We'll call it a 14 point lead and 4 minutes go.
And now walking around Emory goes back around.
Smith ends up with the shot King had it now was back around the wing approaches Jackson pull up and awesome arc for Terence Smith and to Carter will come back with it Shepard Green now trying to go to the basket and they'll call a block here did not see a lot of movement the rest got a great shot tonight ball but it looked like number 41.
Marcus Thomas had stood his ground last trip down.
Shepard green took a jump shot before that he went to the basket twice, tried to hang and could not in fact threw the ball hard off the ball off the glass.
When you have a sprained ankle, you can't hang.
There's no Hangtime I first of all, he can't get as high in the air and you don't want us.
You don't want to be in the air.
You want to be on the ground because that thing hurts right there and you're worried about how are you going to come down as well.
That's why I spent most of my days very close to the floor Now I know you're very good.
You play great player on roller skates.
I think I just like to keep it close to the floor.
So to avoid what poor Shepard Green has gone through tonight, in all seriousness of the kind battling as hard as they can.
But it's been a tough night for Shepard green.
They get within 12 here and i imagine the kid will get into their press and they and they do basically a a straight man to man deal to see if they get a turnover will go inbounds carries Smith with him no problem with the handle goes back outside the defense by going on the wing the shot King Oh that's good call going to the basket again you see the explosiveness It was shocking and Omar Collins is trying to take the charge, but I don't think he had possession and I think they got it right.
Let's look at the replay.
Yeah, college just not able to set himself down here.
When I was talking with Coach Streeter the other day, talking about his club, he's a man of few words.
And I said, How about LaShawn King?
You said, Well, he's an average high school point guard.
And then there's another, but not a dolphin.
You think he's a scrapper?
How about real Emory?
He's well rounded.
How about Terence Smith?
Well, he's got an intensity.
How about Clifford Hill?
Well, he shoots some boards and he's actually a great coach.
He knows he's got a great club here and he knows he can send him out there in waves.
I talked to him right before tip off about 5 minutes and I said he's going to try to wear these guys down to Carter playing ten or 12 guys.
Oh, no, we can't wear anybody that we can't wear these guys out there for good.
So I got a little hope, small, maybe a coach, a little football.
You know, The Shot King now drains two foul shots.
He had been outstanding in the second half.
Really?
Keita will come try to on offense Omar Carter trying to get his three off and he just comes up short there again when a guy right in your face it comes up a little short back the other way the shot came with it.
Oh He gets hammered.
Hamer may have had no answer from the shocking talk a little smack out there.
We may have a taunting now we're okay.
The frustration starting to take over and the shot got hammered pretty good.
They're both going to the basket.
They have had no answer for him at all.
No, they take it to the basket with reckless abandon in both sides, Duke.
And look at how well-conditioned both these teams are.
I mean, what a credit to their coaches at a showcase.
So Sweet right now from the line right If he hits this it'll be 15 for the Shot King.
I think Wilco could smell another state championship.
They have a great tradition of basketball in this part of Georgia, just a few miles outside and miles outside Macon.
They love it.
They brought the whole town.
Yeah, 52, 36 Decatur.
Trying to get back in it, in and out.
Rebound, fight for a great chop there and they can't not convert Shepard Green continues to struggle and will go back the other way.
They got a two on two break here they'll pull it back out and that's how LaRose Jackson without the ROCE but I was really exhibition on a Marcus Haynes and ROCE still went in the ROCE playing with that basketball ROCE not giving it up and I get fouled.
I don't know if that's what Aaron Jeter wants, but it was impressive, if nothing else.
LaRose, Jackson, the senior, has been such a big part of this town's success this year.
30 and oh and a Calhoun game in the semis bowl it was 6966 that they survived in a game that they had to battle back from.
Today, they have not had as much probably to cater shot as up and good.
How about the way they shoot power shots go down the stretch?
Is that not mark of a great ball?
They looked like they smelled what they did here in the fourth quarter and left John King the way he took over in the fourth quarter.
You had the feeling that the kid was hanging around bobbled, as you said to me in the break, after the third quarter.
Wilco, maybe ready to just get in a run and put this thing away again.
The fresh legs in the fourth quarter may be a key.
They play so many guys 54, 32nd into the basket.
Oh yeah.
You want to talk about athletic?
Vince Carter has nothing on that move.
It's the second time tonight.
Oh Mark Clinton is showing that kind of athleticism hanging the air, getting hit and just flips it up.
Look at this.
What about Omar Collin two here, Takes a baseline.
Look at that.
Wow.
This is able to create space for himself And then the Wolford.
They do the ability to create in air.
Not many basketball players in the world can create in the world in the air can change shots once they've left the ground.
You know what I don't know that the Cato did a good job of getting him into the offense in that third quarter, but it seemed like Shepard reached the most of the looks.
And Omar Carter, no, I think is the most talented piece offensively really didn't get himself in the game back the other way.
Oh and the end and the finish Cliff Hill for a Wilko how about that For a big man with some athleticism Collins is back the other way no rebound slot for John game wanting it Collins with it out of bounds and it is will come all five going going after it as well Cliff Hill ball for Wilko showing why he's their leading scorer going end to end and the finish man that's a big time play huh You know you you talk about you know maybe slowing down when you make the spin move the spin move accelerated to the front of the way.
Terence Smith here with 221 to go, Wilco up 17 and they'll run some clock here And once a lot of fans content look at another state championship just minutes away Callington again trying to take the offensive foul but we're going to take this thing as part of the country deal and as one of the security guards said to me, they've you know, this is basketball country.
When you talk about some of the guys that came from here, Jeff Malone, Terry Fair.
Michael Hunt Yeah, you know they do love their basketball and make it.
Doctor Aaron Jeter, junior head coach of will call all over his club on that turnover.
He's going to coach this thing all the way through here 2 minutes from championship.
You don't want to screw around Collins It goes to the basket.
Explosive move hangs in the air around the rim and in Omar Collins in Decatur calls the timeout.
The crowd trying to stay into it 56 to 41, 158 to go.
And this Decatur teen has been a real inspiration all year.
And speaking of inspiration, they alluded to it before the game.
But Sarah Wolfe, young lady who is dying of cancer, is going to high school in Decatur, had a front page story.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution, an extremely moving piece.
If you've ever read one, your heart goes out to her family, to the whole community, what inspiration she was prior to the semi final game, I guess it was.
They met with her and her family.
And I know that for Decatur, that was something that had been very much on their minds.
What what they've been able to get from from what that young ladies guy dedicated to her.
What a wonderfully tough young girl.
Yeah, Heartbreaking story.
That was the cancer in the press.
They get the steel, they can use it three here Shepard Green pulls on it's way off rebounds but four and it's a jump ball possession arrow goes to Wilco Shepard green ball is just never looked comfortable tonight and again he's a great ball player a great leader but has not been his night in the state championship.
No I think you know he's one of the guys that they didn't want to give an open look to and he tried to force some things early in the paint.
And when not able to go, he never got off tonight.
No, he didn't Ball deflected out of bounds.
Oh my colleague are just just after by the way.
Oh my calling too.
Did you see him there talking to North Carolina and T to Mercer and to Southern Mississippi about potential basketball scholarship.
So he's a kid that has a future at the next level.
Terence Smith was he gives it up now to the Roxy Jackson.
And this kid has been nothing but money from the foul line and 128 to go cover other games today.
It's been a great day here in Macon and the single-A girls, Wesleyan 6549 over Jefferson and he single-A boys, Taylor County, 62, Clarkston 50 League girls gassy over podium 55 to 43.
And this, of course, the fourth game of the day.
We'll be back here tomorrow as well.
But coming up, Mitchell Baker and Cross Keys, the sultry tones of Stoup Titanic and Herb White.
Coming up next.
LaRose Yes.
Boy, he looks smooth at the line.
I like that.
Yeah.
5841 128 to go now.
We'll Go.
Really executed down the stretch.
Yeah they did that supervisor look at Collison.
Oh man mix it up again creating in the air changing direction in the air not taking that you taking the charge there I'll tell you what jumps out at me Bo is it colleagues it wasn't their leading scorer Shepard Green was this kid only averaged 13 a game He seems like the kind of scorer that could really explode for, you know, 20 and thirties.
I mean, so college, it keeps them alive.
5843 120 to go to control, call the timeout and get into their press Hey guy you could have become a TV member today just by visiting our new and redesigned website at WW W GPB dot org.
It's totally secure.
Simple to use it takes just 2 minutes that's W WW dot gpb dot org.
And once again thank you for your support of Georgia Public television.
Thank you TV for allowing myself and Bobak to sit courtside here for the Double-A championship game back tomorrow.
Ball as well.
It's a great throw.
This is what we think about, you know, the memories that these kids have and what they're making here and the fact that they'll never forget this for the rest of their lives.
You talked about it earlier.
I mean, it really is special that, you know, one team will be just always think about, you know, if somebody will think about if I had only done this or if I'd only done that, you know, might have been different.
Well, for Wilco, they won't be saying that.
And neither will Dashon King.
Both shot, and he'll be playing this for his grandkids and he'll play the highlight of steaks for people going on and on.
About the second half he has had, he has been dominant and I love the way Wilco just keep bagging foul shots.
Cliff Hill converting there.
He's the senior.
Think about the eight seniors on this club.
They've been on this club since ninth grade.
Most of them they've won three state titles and they finish in the semis one year.
That's a hell of a basketball was a hell of a senior class with three state titles and coach coaching them.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, they're right down the stretch here with one on nine to go.
1643 Clinton pulls up from a deep three that's NBA free and roll call comes back the other way gets stripped to Carter coming back with it now looking for a wide open jumper outside no good for Brian Cole rebound fought for Harman knocks it out of bounds but it is Will Cole basketball 6043 55 seconds away from Wilkinson County taking home a state championship and they will sub their starters right now to Decatur well and a tribute to what has been a great run, but a disappointing day for the many fans who travel from Atlanta to watch the game, giving them a standing ovation.
Nice touch, Coach Wilson.
And here comes the coach.
Peter is going to do the same thing.
Take his guys out, give a standing ovation from their crowd behind his words.
What he said brought the entire town with him.
Shepard Green, David Harbin, McQuinn Johnson, Evan Jones and Omar Collins and the starters for Decatur.
Wilkinson playing so many guys.
But I want to mention Rashad King who comes out.
We're not out golfing.
Gerald Emery.
Terence Smith, Little Richard Jackson.
Thomas Smith Marcus Thomas back the other way and the finish That's short, but with the finish, an athletic end to end point and we'll try to stay on top of it here 19 point lead for we'll start seeing some of these guys can get some memories I think final shot is up and man's rebound up and in that Samuel Gillespie the junior and he hits that shot there.
Well coach now trying to finish this thing off to cater and a full court press looking down court with someone else get a memory in the state finals here.
They'll pull things back out.
Wilkinson County trying to run the clock like a double dribble.
Maybe they go back outside of Hines.
All right.
The Martez Horn corner with it.
10 seconds to go.
9 seconds to the title Inside Passing up and a great finish.
Alonzo Sky two one.
It's over.
It is over.
Wilko has done it a double, a boys championship for Wilkinson County, their third state title in four years.
Well deserved, well fought for and well, our people are launching themselves.
Little kids are rolling on the ground.
It's an unbelievable scene at the Metro Bucks here in Macon.
And look at the Decatur team, obviously down.
They hung around the big time.
They couldn't get it done, though late.
Here's John Nelson.
He has got the doctor Aaron Jeter night coach Doc run accident with you and me out here with all of these people, 120 games that you've coached it will go 111 wins three state titles.
Does it get any easier or does it get any harder for you every year?
I don't want to say it gets harder, but you know, you got kids a tradition like we have, they work hard and, you know, good things happen to people that work hard with the 31 and all across the board.
How difficult was it knowing that you were going to have the bullseye on your back, everybody wanting to knock you off the perch?
Well, you know, you just stay focused and try to do the things that you do well.
And we work on every DNA was able to do that throughout the course of the season.
Defense obviously stepped up when you went to the press second quarter.
They also tried to hit their shots.
Decatur wasn't hitting theirs and you were hitting yours, but you ended up pressing them out of the building?
Pretty much.
Yeah.
And, you know, I commend on the season did a great job when it was time to just get it done.
And they've been doing it all year long.
So like I say congratulations to them and job well done seniors.
Real quick what do they mean to welcome?
I tell you what, I don't think it's been a better collective group since I've been there.
And they've had some good ones and I stepped up tonight and got it done.
When everything finishes up, when is this going to sink in for you, do you think?
I don't know if they see Kent.
I'm just, you know, I'll enjoy it.
Yes, We look forward to trying to do it again.
And you get that chance next year.
Doc, congratulations.
State Title Wilco.
Three years out of the last four, Another Warrior finish.
Guys, back to you.
Well, the finish here.
A big win for Wilco.
Over to Carter.
Let's go to Jimmy like you.
Find out what's coming up.
More high school championships on the way.
All right, Thanks a lot, guys, and good job.
Steak SHAPIRO, Ball back and John Nelson on a great ball game won by Wilco, 64 to 45.
Coming up, it's a38 boys championship.
Mitchell Baker and Cross Keys coming your way next on.
