Live from the Make It Center plex since the 2009 GHC to a girl state champion chip.
Today it's the model lady Blue Devils at 31 and out of region seven taking on the 31 and one Buford lady wolves out of region six.
And good afternoon, everyone.
Dave Gardner alongside my broadcast partner Dick Williams.
And good to be back with you here, partner.
And welcome to making Macon Coliseum.
Some of the best basketball in the state was played here.
Absolutely.
Of course, a true versus one versus two matchup here today between Buford a model.
And let's talk a little bit about the Lady Blue Devils, the team that comes in here undefeated on the season.
Well, an unbeaten team is unusual.
We've seen two already, but the the model team is hampered by the loss of one of their their leading scorers.
And so they're going to have to put together a total team effort to survive and keep that unblemished record unblemished.
And one of those players is Shelby Ferrer.
One of the players added that Coach Eckels will rely on here today.
Yeah, she averages about 11 points.
She's a senior.
This is a team concept, but it's tough to lose 14, 15 points out of your lineup at this late in the season.
Of course, you see Ferrer's numbers right there.
Indeed model, very impressive.
And there you can look at the rest of the lineup right there.
Again, Alexa Evans, Taylor Martin, Shelby Ferrer, Joy Hoskins getting the start today for Jasper.
John Nelson.
We'll touch on that in a moment.
And Macy Sinnott, certainly one of those players that Coach Eckels will lean on here today.
Now, of course, the team they've been chasing all year long in the rankings is the number one view for Lady Wolves, and they're led by several players, but one in particular, Blanche Halvorson.
Blanche Halvorson is one of the favorite players.
They had the opportunity to referee her game against a canter.
She plays with a smile.
She's six three that can shoot the three, and she's going to Auburn, where I suspect she'll be a real good to guard and see her numbers there on the season.
Of course, Albertson, very athletic and looking forward to seeing her here today.
There's the rest of the five again Andrea Carter in there, Sharni Carson, Michelle Godwin, Blanche Albertson and of course Jocelyn Danley, the starting five today for the Buford Lady Wolves.
Again, the number one team in the state with just one loss game early in the season against Marist in double overtime.
So looking forward to it.
I get one versus two here today.
These teams, of course, not meeting during the regular season, but they know a lot about each other and we'll talk more about that later on in the broadcast as well.
But I'm excited about it.
Is it is Macon madness.
Yes, it is.
It's a packed house.
And I love the fact, by the way, that that Buford team has got the four seniors.
But I hear we got to look out for the freshman point guard.
Let's go ahead, throw it downstairs.
John Nelson joining us courtside today as well.
What's going on, buddy?
Courtside here.
If model's going to get the win today, they're going to have to do it without their leading scorer, Ginny Jasper.
Bottom line, let's take you back to the semifinal.
And in the first quarter, she twisted her knee.
It's diagnosed as an M.S., Ill tear.
They're going to get the final word on that when they go back to model and they go home after the game.
So they're going to have to make sure that everything is but this team concept, six players, seven players, it's going to be a team effort today for model going up against Blue for Jean Darden, for the Wolves knows the team concept coming in, knows that everything is going to go that way.
So fully prepared everything as is for the wolves.
Guys, back to you.
All right.
Thanks, John.
We'll check back in with you right now.
Let's go courtside, Eddie.
Actually, long time P.A.
announcer With today's introductions.
Well, have your attention for the starting lineup.
First for Marvel at guard number 22, a five foot eight senior Alexa Evans at guard number 25, a five foot seven senior.
Taylor Smart At forward number 15, a five foot six.
Senior Joy Huskies at center number 21, a five foot 11.
Senior Macy Senior at center number 36 foot one.
Singer Shelby Farrah and model's head coach Sally Echo.
And now for your Buford Lady Wall.
At guard number three, a five foot eight freshman Andre Carter at guard number 14, a six foot three senior Black Halvorson at Guard number 23, a five foot four.
Senior Michelle Godwin at forward number 24, five foot nine.
Senior Jocelyn Danley.
At forward number 33, a five foot nine junior, Alicia Rudd third and beautiful.
It goes to third stage is set to a girls championship between monolithic feet.
This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station.
We got back here live at the Macon Center Flex, Dave Garner, Dick Williams, John Nelson, courtside today along with the rest of the GPB crew as we get set for girls to a state championship action.
Again, Model lady Blue Devils, a perfect 31 go on the year, taking on the 31 and one once beaten lady wolves from Buford, a team that certainly has had playoff experience throughout their history.
Of course, model in the visiting black here today Buford in their home whites.
It's the first time back on a schedule for several years and teams are just taking the time to get involved.
But you know, they're not out to ASU so they can play.
They've got to be a pretty good team if they've done that, that's for sure.
High off the glass right there.
First shot off the mark by Dan Lee, three point shot all the way.
It's there.
And just like that, the Lady Wolves draw first blood.
Michelle Godwin, the five five senior with the first points of the game.
Now some pressure from Buford.
They like that.
And on the line going back the other way, that's Troy Hoskins, 15, who we've talked about a little bit earlier on.
There you see Coach Sally Echols in her fourth season, has done a great job with this program, took over the head coaching position at just 24 years old.
You can tell she's a very young lady right there, but she's already garnered over 100 victories debut.
And I let her walk right by us.
We didn't believe she was the head coach.
I thought she was one of the players there for a little while.
But 100 wins at any stage here, it's a pretty good throw for you.
Nothing.
Buford Early on here, inside the first minute, then the closest game this year for model was a three point victory over Crucial Fellow seven school out of the Rome area.
Liverpool.
It's pretty much been lights out, a four point win over PI day.
Yeah, but this is a model team that certainly endured and now they will get the turnover right here and that gets the faithful on their feet and boy they have come out in numbers here today down from Rome, Georgia.
They sure have.
Meanwhile use the first the six eight chance three straight wins after that losing the second game of the season to Mary's a double overtime.
Look at that quickness Andre a around the other end trying to work for puts it up would not go rebound model the blue Devils out here with a nice job by Hoskins Napier for the keep this pressure on the whole game but we're gone we've got to be real careful with the basketball There's that kind of full court press in the back the other way there he had Dick Hoskins a little bit under control there.
There you see Gene Durden, fourth season at Buford, 96 wins.
He's also flirting with 104.
So these coaching staff very familiar with each other, Right.
He had that.
He had Kelly Echols in his camps.
Jean Durden did that when she was a seventh grader.
And Durden, of course, came from Dade County High School, playing right here by 24.
Jocelyn Danley, She missed a bucket a while ago, but the five nine senior makes this one stick, averaging eight on the season.
And it's a five double Buford League.
They're having trouble contending with this pressure.
There's a lot of hands in there.
And another turnover that's about to turn already.
Yeah.
Looks to have had that one taken away back on the other end.
Shot her way out there just off the mark would not go.
Kept alive though by Danley who kicks it back out to Andre Carter Watch out for Carter today.
Number three, she's certainly a great athlete to get it done from all over the floor and is certainly stepped up big in the postseason.
But there's two more for Danley, though, who works inside.
He uses that five nine frame to her advantage.
Andrea Carter, staying on her for just a moment is a freshman.
She is running this team of seniors.
And I hear that Duke and Maryland, everybody else in the world looking in Orange is a ninth grader.
Taylor Martin had that one knocked away.
Going out of bounds.
It will stay with model.
The Lady Blue Devils averaged 60 points a game offensively and allowed just 37.
Meanwhile, Buford right there statistically in the same boat, just three points off in fact, 60 points offensively and 30 for defensive play.
So two very good defenses here this afternoon.
Absolutely has not had a shot yet.
DAVIS I'm not sure they have.
I think they had a couple of they had I think were, you know, down to the five minute mark.
There's a three Shelby Farr, the player we focused on up top though, but misses everything on that attempt.
So 3 minutes in it's Buford up seven nothing.
The first final four appearance for the Lady Wolves since 2000, of course, lost in the quarterfinals in oh seven and eight.
Did you see the officials today?
Larry Sauls, Will Jones and Bill Lewis, Larry Shoals, the crew chief from northeast Georgia.
And, of course, you know, that's the great thing about having you here, Dick, as being a long time official.
We really get to see the game through the eyes of a referee, which is something you don't always get to see.
Usually the referees are the just the folks are yelling out all the time.
But I have to be careful because sometimes I watch the referees instead of the game because that's kind of what I'm trying to do.
This pressure by Buford is just wonderful.
That's another turnover and still Ruddick on the other end lays it up and in converts the turnover into points and Buford out to a90 run so for this ballgame and the Lady Wolves fans are on their feet here inside the Macon Center blitz motto going to call the time out right here and try to regroup.
We'll step aside, take a time out with a 422 to play in the opening period.
Nine nothing.
BUFORD We're back in a moment.
Buford nine Nothing over model.
Let's go downstairs.
John Nelson standing by with a special guest.
John Thank you.
Dave Haywood Doctor Bedroom.
Okay, First off, flash the rocks real quick.
See those right there?
That's the spoils at Buford.
Now, let's talk about triple A, Even though we're here to double game Buford High School, we believe in triple excellence.
It's excellence in academics, athletics, in the arts, costarred in the girls basketball team as a pure representation of that.
They've done an incredible this year job this year, and I can't be more proud of them with the incredible support of our Board of Education superintendent and just incredible students and parents.
It's amazing everything that we're accomplishing at Buford High School.
Well, thanks, Banks.
Thanks for your time.
Go back to your seat.
Enjoy the rest of the ballgame.
Day back to you.
All right.
Thank you, John.
Yeah.
Dr. Biderman with some hardware there.
Indeed.
Hoping to add another piece of jewelry here after today's basketball game.
It's actually pretty menacing, that one out of bounds at Back to the Lady Wolves.
And so far, Dick, the name of this game has been Lady Wolves.
Pressure all the way, All the way.
And and surprising them even though they're down nine to nothing.
It sounds kind of silly to say this model's playing some pretty good defense.
Yup.
Turnovers, though.
Again, they turned the ball over 6 to 1.
You saw right there.
And that is certainly contributed to the fast Buford Start Drive.
Inside, though, it looks like they're going to get Taylor Martin reach it in.
So that will put Andrea Carter, the five freshmen at the line right here in Decatur.
Very impressive.
And, you know, we talked about it.
When you have a team like Buford, who you have the upperclassmen that they have right there, to see a freshman out there starting amongst this group says a lot and running the offense.
Coach Jurgen has handed his entire offense to a ninth grade point guard.
She must be excellent, I think.
Sure.
We'll see that as the afternoon goes along.
Macy Senior stepping back in for model number 24, the 510 senior averaging nine and a half.
Isaiah Carter though, knocking down a pair from the line and that gives a natural seven Oh yeah here's Alexa Evans 22 trying to get rid of it fair nice look inside a good ball movement that time but had the door shut they were trying to feed Lauren Shields inside.
He stepped into the game a moment ago, but a nice job there by Rudnick.
It look like 33 two step in front of it.
Coach Third's got to be happy so far with this team.
Start.
Well, they're really quick getting into the passing range.
They're just anticipating all the second jump into the passing room.
Very effective turn right here.
Would not go a tough shot for Ferris.
He had had the ankle so far.
He's had a hand in her face.
Again, Ferris stands six feet one, the senior averaging over 11 points a game.
But it's been tough going so far against after Buford inside game and you know this this this size side of the offense they almost started with Alvarez an out high which is capable of doing that Buford shooting four for eight model hole for two.
There's the answer to how many shots they check Yeah, it says a lot.
And they've only got two shots off here in 6 minutes now and take it away back on the other end.
But Carter in the area quickly down on the other end and a great look to Blanch Albertson, who has her first two of the day.
She's tough at the long end of this press two for that six three size.
So you do think about hours that you think about her being six foot three and working inside.
She's actually more of a perimeter player than anything.
But there's two for Macy centered, and they're certainly going to need a big game out of her today and a big effort right here to climb back.
It is a sigh of relief they got on the board.
Yeah, certainly a needed momentum builder right here in this opening quarter.
That shot would go for Carter, taken down one and out that time.
Shields with the rebound being worked on a lot of contact right there but they are going to call Rudnick for the block probably the right call look like it right in front of us Absolutely no second guessing here.
3 seconds.
I'll look at it right here.
But get Evans.
She stepped up under her.
Yeah, she held her spot.
She'd have been fine, but she stepped up and her hips came up under the model player.
So Barnett will inbound.
It gets it into Rachel.
It's here in time.
The sophomore five one into the lineup.
But take it away though, by Johnny Carson, who feeds underneath for two more.
And that's two more points for Audrey Dorsey, the senior five seven who stepped into the lineup a moment ago as well for Buford.
Now it's 15 to get points off a turnover.
Buford with eight model help scoreless in that department so far and another take away right there.
So you can add to that take it nine they're not taking care of the basketball.
They've got to do it against a team like the Lady Wolves thought about the three point shot did pass it, took it inside, kicks it back out.
Good ball movement right here lady Wolves open shot three pointer would not go for Carter kept alive very nicely by Dorsey who gets the back 17 too often running here in this first period and a time out on the floor that to be called by model once again the lady Blue Devils out of their rhythm early on.
And that's sort of been what Hubert's done to a lot of their opponents this year, jumped on him early and stayed on him throughout the game.
Do you feel like you're looking at kind of a West Wing, too?
It's the same kind of basketball that Wesleyan plays with that extensive pressure.
Well, we hope you're enjoying our live broadcast of the best at Georgia high school basketball and ask that you stay tuned at halftime for your opportunity to become a member of the Georgia Public Broadcasting Family.
It's viewers like you that help make great local programs like this possible.
And thank you for supporting Georgia Public Broadcasting become a member today visit w WW dot gpb dot org or you going to look at coach Jean Durden and the Lady Wolves tell you why they could have drawn it up any better.
I don't think Dick here this first quarter no this is this is just a defense win ballgames you talk about the first couple of possessions.
They've got the model players covered up and they they can't throw deep.
They've had several turnovers trying to throw deep and they're not negotiating the midcourt line very effectively.
They need to be picking for each other a little bit, I think, just to get the ball across half court.
Well, you can read the facial expressions there of Coach Echols.
I mean, obviously she called that timeout very animated, waving her players over, trying to rally him right here.
And that's what I mean.
You just brought the ball to the midcourt when he got it over.
Then they can begin to set up fast.
They're going to get called for the block right there.
Good, vital fourth straight region titles, Region seven, very tough region, a lot of good competition up there.
And for those who don't know, a model is not an adjective.
It's the name of the town that the school is located in one community there right outside of Rome.
But we haven't seen Beth snap yet in the ball game for model's percentage.
Why?
She's one of the best players, 43%, three point shooter, 80% free throw shooter, as well as more of a role player right here.
You see inside right there in the pocket.
No is for fair.
They absolutely that time got to run.
An offensive play I think was the first time the game was actually been able to limit without defensive distractions.
17 four.
Back on the other end quickly though, here's Carson who dishes a three point shot on the way and it's good for Roberson She's got five there's that pressure and you know we were just talking about that Allison you know you think six foot three, probably a post player.
Well, actually, she does more outside.
It's players like Danley who are a little bit smaller, five foot nine, who really work inside and have the most success in Harrison between Atlanta, obviously, and Miss Georgia basketball oh eight and Emory Armstrong of Russell, they're both six three.
They both play wherever they want to, whatever is the most effective spot from top of the key and hit a three pointer.
I got it.
Want me to drive the line?
Got that for you two.
Knocked away Carson with quick hands right there.
The 35 Alex Peyton End of the game for model and even passes have been tough to make for this lady blue devil team and in the early going and there's Danley dishing it off Anderson with two more seven points for Blanch Albertson the six three senior here in this first period with time winding down Allen nearly taken away.
Oh, good.
Look inside.
Underneath all alone That's basically center.
I thought she might not see sin because her back was turned to her time winding down here.
Buford with one last shot did not get it out of her hand and timed it.
Andre to Carter.
So it will remain 22 to 6.
We'll take a break.
Be right back with quarter number 220 to 6 Buford Leads Model at Peace.
This is Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Your PBS station.
And on so far all Buford in this girls to a title game Let's go courtside Jon Nelson the Man in Black what's happening?
Thanks, Dave.
Spent time in both huddles quickly, starting with model coach Eckles told her players, Don't worry about the deficit.
We can get it back because every basket we've had has been a layup.
We're getting inside.
Flip side to Buford.
No surprises.
Jean Durden, Two words.
Keep attacking.
Back to you.
All right.
Thanks, John.
Yeah, that's indeed there.
And you know, when you take a look at the story of this game so far, it's been about turnovers.
And for Buford, converting those turnovers into points again, 10 to 1, the turnover story right there and viewers are certainly taking advantage of that with 12 points.
12 all on model in that category.
Well, yeah, 1212 turnovers to drop, points off turnovers only twice in my recollection has model been able to run there they're set offense 20 to 6 right here in Buford leads it but still plenty of basketball here left to be played and that's the good news for battle again the lady Blue Devils certainly good basketball team.
And remember again today, Jasper out to five nine.
Junior is really one of the four generals out there, as you see, Anderson, picking up the foul for Buford.
Now, Jasper, out of the lineup today certainly takes something out of there.
But, you know, this has been a model team that's played together all year long, players like Joy Hoskins, some of those players stepping in, filling.
It had been just about one person, not about the whole scoring has been very pretty evenly distributed.
But still, when you lose your leading scorer, that's that's got to feel badly.
HOSKINS Second one all the way and knocks it down so.
HOSKINS One of two.
On that trip, the five seven seniors get model first Elite Eight appearance since 2000, but they've also been a mainstay in the playoffs the last couple of years, finally getting over the hump this year and making it to this title game three point shot on the way on the other end, in and out of there for Sara dempsey, Dempsey, a58 senior unable to hit that shot now model back the other way, but not without a little bit of lady wolves pressure again, closing down the passing lanes.
The lady wolves, you got to like what you see and put those hands up and play in deep.
Right.
But I don't think the model player realized that Blanch Halverson six three It's not going over her.
Yeah, it's tough to make those cross-court passes when you have a wingspan like that.
But as you mentioned, you know, Buford only allowing 34 points a game against their opponents, Model 37 as well.
Well, maybe coming into this game expecting somewhat of a low scoring game when you consider those two percentages that shot off the back of the iron and no good.
Anderson goes up and calls it in quickly down on the other end.
Lady Wolves on the other end of the floor.
Jocelyn Danley with two more.
She's got six and a fast start for Danley in this one, 24 seven.
Buford leads it once again, applying a little bit of backcourt pressure right here.
That's Hoskins.
He's able to dribble through it, get down to the other end, puts up a shot, takes it off the glass, tough shot.
Now, that could change some things for model Hoskins will step up like that.
Somebody's got to somebody's got to step up, take charge here and try to get some more points on the board.
Buford, of course, on the other end, defeated Calloway in round one, 7741.
There is a block inside.
Nice job there by Shelby Ferrer.
And then on the other end, a little push right there by Rudnick.
That's going to be her second Buford.
Very physical.
They've got to watch out that they don't overdo it getting a little bit of foul trouble right here.
I think he's so deep dangerous bench is so deep here for their typical dressed 1415 players and he uses a lot of.
Yeah, they do absolutely good.
MARTIN in the lineup for model Alexa Evans dribbling dishes it off nearly had it taken away fair working inside with the left hand unable to get the role right there.
It goes out of bounds last touch though by Johnson of Buford so it will stay with the Lady Blue Devils.
They're starting to settle down a little captive there.
Their other seniors are stepping up to the model.
That's what's got to happen here.
They were pretty much deer in the headlights in the first quarter there with a good looking bucket right there, 2411.
Cut the gap and watch out that Lady Blue Devil offense is starting to click a little bit.
That's right.
It was the seniors that are doing that.
When they get into the set offense and breaks the pressure, they can start to settle down.
That will take it away by Alex Evans.
Evans trying to race to the other end of the floor.
Would that be the first turnover for Wilson?
I think so.
I think so.
Looking inside on that one, Take it away by Carter.
Quick hands there.
It's knocked away by Haskins defensively at midcourt probably a good thing she did because Carter was off and running may have had an easy deuce on the other end.
Absolutely.
She does not play a lot of press.
No, not at all.
Take another look at that last bucket by bodily get off the inbound again that's that's a set play that's easy for them to do.
But if they can't get into their set offense, they don't have those options open.
Take that Godwin 23 with the basketball up top being guarded by Evans Dorsey swings it over three point shot all the way from Godwin off the mark would not go and take him down by Alexa Evans back on the other end Carter again showing some quick hands and a take away draws the whistle.
And I tell you what, I'm impressed by the hustle in this first half from Andrea Carter.
She's everywhere and she's she's playing a great kind of a bigger version of the young lady from Redan who was all over the court for two straight state championship games, two team fouls on model five on the Lady Wolves here in this first half.
Buford leads it 2411 Lady Wolves again beat Calloway in round one, Cusa 6348, the second round, and of course defeated Ravens 7238, a good Rabbit County team in the quarterfinals.
And then, of course, Laney, the other night in the cities dominating performance.
And there's two more Abby Johnson that converts that 159 senior in the book.
And another turnover right there and indeed a turnover is Evans lost the handle on it so the lady wolves will have it and will step aside with four and a half to play here in the first half.
Again.
2611 Buford on top of Model Lady Blue Devils trying to make a run will be Buford leading model, the girls championship.
Let's go down to John Nelson, who's back in the principal's office.
John And I'm always in the principal's office here with Mr. White.
Proud Week for everyone at Model.
This has been a great year for us.
We're 31 in oh one divided.
We've got a great team, a great coach, great community support here today for us.
We're just proud to be here.
We plan on being a state champion when the day is done.
Optimism down here on the floor.
Back over to you, Dave.
Did Mr. White optimistic about his team's chances and hey, why not start to make a little run right here?
Coach Echols has her team playing some good basketball and offensively starting to pick it up a little bit.
He better be optimistic.
Would be a lot of folks up in Montana waiting for him when he got back.
If he isn't.
Yeah, the game is the game is well within reach.
The trends don't look good, but the game is well within reach.
Buford, of course, with a lot of defensive pressure there early on that three point shot off the mark.
But you know really what's attributed to it a jump ball call right there possession area will stay with Buford but model has really picked up their defensive intensity a little bit as well.
They don't look like a pressing team, but in their in their set, the offenses, they've been very effective and they're fairly.
Yeah.
They haven't lost much inside.
No.
And they prides itself on that.
I mean they practice tough on their defensive game, being balanced, showing a lot of patience.
Here's our set three point shot would not go Halverson again the Auburn signee number 14 six for three and look at baskets racing her way down to the other end of the floor just too strong off the glass wouldn't go underneath fair in a little bit too deep right there A tough angle for Buford trying to go the other way with it.
Oh, that ball loose.
Fair up with it.
Trying to find a teammate does so in Alexa Evans.
He puts up the shot and one for Evans Chance for a three point play for the five seven senior.
Nicely done Kayla Burks is almost there is that caliber I think it is it's almost there but it's nice play again they're making little runs here and if they can be patient they can get back in.
It prevents completes the three point play 2614 model slowly climbing back into it right here cutting into that Buford Gap and on the other end and one on the other end for Andre Carter.
And that's what you're going to answer.
She just blazed right by the defender model come out and a man to man.
And I sense a little bit of confusion about who had what.
And and Andrea Carter exploited that confusion with that drive to the hole.
Carter, unable to hit the free throw, though, comes away with two 2814 Buford still doubling up the a lady Blue Devils to this point baskets dribbling back on the other end and a near turnover right there centered in the right place at the right time follows one up a little bit short and this is actually that was Lauren Shields, 21.
So Buford will have it in our defense.
There are some different numbers here than what we've been getting.
Yeah, they are some of the uniforms to put on Hold it away and a little switcheroo there.
A couple of those numbers.
And we are sitting ready, though.
We'll try to keep it straight for you.
3 minutes left in the half here for it underneath, working on a strong inside bucket right there for Danielle.
And she's got eight points out, a huge first half.
She's already hit her average.
Oh, yeah.
Here's the pressure to get a little better negotiating.
Oh, big block right there out of the hand of Taylor Martin.
And man, that was all Danley right there, five foot nine.
But tell you what, she plays bigger than that.
She does.
And she was waiting for that one that was just like, here, here comes the appetizer.
Let me have it.
But she nearly knocked it.
Yeah, she nearly kept it play right there, kept the feed in, but the ball went out.
The Blue Devil basketball and that three point shot off the mark that was senior 24 probably rushed that a little quicker.
But models kind of had to do that here a little bit in the first half.
That was said, okay, all right, I'm starting to get this.
I saw Coach Echols, of course, played for the 97 model team that went to the state championship, finished as the runner up.
And here she is a little over ten years later as the head coach of this model program.
He's done an excellent job going over 100 wins a couple of weeks back during the region tournament, 730.
What do we have there?
A foul whistle on the floor.
That one's not going to go against Anderson.
It looks like.
I don't think coach Jean Durden was up here, but was worried about the number of fouls.
We're now in the one and one, but he plays so many players that we should tell people.
Again, the number confusion for players each game alternate in and out of the lineup because there's only room for so many names in the Scorebook if hitting on the first SI Alexa Evans five seven senior second one all the way this is off the rim rebound Abby Johnson you know that she put that shot short That's a problem for model because you're having to play against this pressure and they're going to get tired out Yeah High archer there from the shell Godwin from the corner unable to hit it 15 point lead right here under 2 minutes in the first half It's been pretty quick but it's been mostly Buford and there's traveling right there Sigurd slid that back foot couldn't keep it still and another lady Blue devil turnover lady wolves again number one throughout most of the season as we mentioned, had that loss back on December 6th against Mary's, a double overtime.
That was just the second game of the year for this Buford team.
But since then, they've rattled off 30 straight fourths lost in the quarter finals last year and the year before.
And remember, if you're looking at the gold standard, they beat ham.
Yes.
One of the few teams that's handed Wesleyan a loss this year.
Wesleyan, of course, winning a state championship earlier today right here inside the Macon Center box.
And of course, to a lot of folks, Wesleyan belongs in this double AA game.
But the way the schools are redistricted every two years, Westlands Enrollment puts them down in a single classification.
Taking it out here that's Rudnick puts up the shot would not go kept alive on the other end by Hoskins Buford there's not shooting particularly well shooting well at all.
But the pressures get them some way, especially this quarter offensive back the other way.
Hoskins goes down and she is holding the back of her head right there.
She came down pretty hard there.
Well, they will take a look at her.
We take another look at it, said HOSKINS Nice.
Take the charge there, though.
There was a nice play.
And in being willing to step in against that, that drive.
Yeah, Abby Johnson sacrificed her body there a little bit, as did Hoskins, who still lays down on the floor.
A scary situation right here with a minute.
Ten left in this first half as they attend to her.
I wonder if there's no need to speculate.
But you always wonder about a player's head in the back of the head hitting the floor on the impact.
And they don't call it hardwood for nothing.
Yeah, Earl Exactly.
Always amuses me when people say basketball is a contact sport, that's for sure.
Well, for the latest information on a basketball championships, including live score Atlanta blogs, you can go to gboard backslash basketball.
Also check out score at Telecom for updated scores.
Again, that score at ELLE.com for updated scores from this weekend's state basketball championships.
And you can go to that website and see one of the best interviews I've ever seen done with Dr.
Rob Swearingen, the leader of the Georgia High School Association.
He addresses all the hot issues that that are surrounding high school basketball today classifications, recruiting, that sort of thing.
And it's a very well done interview with the main man.
You go you see Hoskins being helped up right there.
Good crowd on hand here today to enjoy five seven senior in the starting lineup today in for the injured Danny Jasper who of course is out with the injury and unable to play today.
I hope after that they will come back because model is not deep model needs everybody that can get out there, especially with Jimmy Jackson out.
So Hoskins will take a break right here.
Appears to be okay off on her own power and that's a great sign for the lady Blue Devils.
You bet.
So as we hit close to the one minute mark right here in the half, get back to action.
Buford still with a 15 point lead, and it's pretty much canceled at each other over the last four or 5 minutes, though in this game, you could start with such a big league lead at 20 to 6 after the first back.
The other way it goes, that one's going to go on.
RUDNICK It's pretty effective man to man.
Defense But not all that time there, man.
The man is generally pretty effective.
They lose some people over on the right wing occasionally, though, that is going to be three on Alysha Reddick.
So she will come out of the lineup today.
Carson will come in to replace her first car.
So I'm one of the original starters on the afternoon and get more backcourt pressure right here by Buford model start in the handles.
They're starting to handle that pressure far more confident like that time Evans knew she was going to travel had to get rid of it, kind of lost her position there on the floor and just kind of passed it or what I just said, forget it.
Yeah.
Perfect timing.
Yeah.
So.
So chuckles looking on right here.
They'll have their work cut out for him in the second half, but a good chance to give the locker room 45 seconds left here, regroup a little bit.
Well, last night at The Connection, it was a 3215 halftime score in the Marietta game.
So what's the matter with this situation?
But it can be done.
Absolutely.
Model, of course, beating north of Tony in round one.
Love it and round two and of course knocked off a good team that's been here several years and won that one by ten.
And of course the other night against Henry County 6350 senior had 18 points in that ballgame at ten rebounds.
Ferrer also had a double double in that contest as well.
And this is a model team that's been very consistent throughout the postseason.
I think one of the problems that that model's got is that Shelby Ferrer is their their other go to player and defense of her is very effective.
So that'll do it at the end of a half and there's to a girls title game it's the Buford Lady Wolves 30 and the model Lady Blue Devils 15, Buford with a great half of basketball, but model still with another half to play right here as we go courtside to John Nelson standing by with Coach third.
Thanks, guys.
Here with the coach first quarter you asserted your will got the big lead.
Yeah, we came out really fast.
I was real pleased the way we started out.
We just got to try to finish this fine.
I was going to say second quarter, they pretty much got their tempo and you had to work toward them.
Yeah, they, they let us control their way, made us play their tempo outside quarter so we got to come back, steal, start fast.
Get going.
Thanks Coach.
Thanks.
Back to you guys.
All right.
Thank you, John.
Again, find out how you can become a member.
This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station on the start of the third period, Buford up 50 3015 over model.
Let's go courtside to John Nelson, standing by with Coach Echols.
Thanks, guys.
Here with a coach.
Let's take it a quarter at a time.
Prescott, the Prescott to you in the first quarter to give them the big lead.
They did first half.
We definitely didn't respond as well as I would have liked against the press.
Just got in a hurry, played their pace and that's not what really what we want to do.
Second quarter though, they played your pace and pretty much it was status quo.
They did.
They did.
And you know, if we can take care of the basketball on offense as we did second quarter, then hopefully we'll make a good run out of second half.
Thanks for your time, Coach Injury Update.
Joy Hopkins.
They asked her all the right questions.
She gave them all the right answers.
She will be back in the second half, guys.
All right.
Thank you, John.
And taking a look back at that first half, very exciting.
A little bit back and forth early on.
Fair looking good right there.
Model eventually put some points on the board after Buford got out to that big run.
When model gets down into the offensive can play as we see right there as they go to the basket and that was the the charge taken but not awarded three point play there for Audrey Dorsey.
And of course, back on the other end, Alicia Rudnick with a couple of points there in the first half.
A quick hands by today Carson, her and Carter, of course tough for Buford defensively creating turnovers and scoring points off of those turnovers and the stronger inside game as you see there prefers got some ball they got some size inside to get those inside points there again look at the numbers again field goal six of 15 for model 14 of 32 for Buford three point field goal free throws, turnover 16 for model, just four for Buford.
And the points off of those turnovers, certainly the story as we open up the second half here live from the Macon Center, Flagstaff.
Carter, Dick Williams with you John Nelson courtside along with the rest of the GPB crew, the Lady Blue Devils.
What will happen with the basketball?
Turn around right there.
Barrett would not go rebound the other way by Lee if if if I were a telestrator like Mike Vitello and I could go over those statistics when he got I mean, model only got 15 shots in the first half.
That's just unheard of.
And of course, 16 turnovers.
Explains why they only got 15 shots, right.
Well, you got to take care of the basketball.
Absolutely.
We're talking about model in that semifinal game against Henry County, 63 to 50 winners there.
A lot of players stepping up.
But of course, in the first quarter of that game today, Jasper going down with that knee injury was out.
But this model team was still able to come away with the win.
As you see Buford getting up a couple of points there.
The fourth quarter.
Yeah, Rodrick Carter, the freshman guard.
You know, we talk a lot about Carter, even as a freshman.
He's already, as you can imagine, getting a lot of attention at the state level by a lot of colleges and so forth.
That's definitely Duke's contact with Maryland's contractor, I'm sure.
Andy Landers with Georgia is in the House tonight, so he's probably giving her a good strong as well.
But remember, she's only in the ninth grade.
She was on the I'm not sure the ninth graders really have focused on what a college is.
That's that's what college see, of course, the last battle.
They're off to a great Halverson.
Almost a deep four on that play feeds it right back to Dan Lee for two That was nice basketball on that last turnover down here was caused by Blanche, obviously weak defense Carter again on the other end the number is Albertson inside off the glass up and in Alison with nine points.
I was just going to say that Joshua and Dan Lee is actually in double figures already with ten.
Buford comes out, picks up the pressure here a little bit.
You know, we're talking to Coach Echols there just a moment ago with Jon Nelson and, you know, talking about pick it up, the intensity of that.
Sure.
Good.
Sturdy for his girls.
Hey, we got to come out with the same intensity we started the ballgame with here in the second half.
I see no reduction of intensity on that pressure bar.
That's the third turnover I think you just got 16 in the first half.
Two more points today.
Carson with their first two of the night but again, turnover and points.
Buford had the numbers on that last break and another time out right here this one called by model coach Echols wanting a 32nd time out here with 620 to go in this third quarter.
Well, she's got to stop the ball real quickly here.
Not a good situation.
She said the right things to John Nelson, but a lot of that appears to have been lost in the changes.
That's where Atlanta reporters are blogging these games live at GPB, George Backslash basketball.
You can check out all of the action for Atlanta dot com for April dot com for the latest scores and of course also the latest information on GHC basketball championships available on the GPB website.
Again w w that GPB George Backslash basketball great websites there indeed And in addition to our TV coverage we've certainly done a lot on the web over last year or so and for folks to check it out.
Meanwhile, Buford on an eight run in the last minute 49.
Yeah probably not come to mind but he hasn't scored in this game.
By the way, Blue Devils outscored the lady Wolves in the second quarter.
And there's three points there for Martin Taylor Martin with her first book of the night.
That's what they needed Good looking release on that shot.
This is the model team they could have to replace basically 30 points of offense from last year's team.
It's amazing that they keep winning region championships and it's gotten this far.
Losing that amount about the game.
Yeah.
Yeah.
She's put on a little show for us If she has it, don't say Lady Wolves.
Just keep plugging away right here.
Alison Carter, just an unbelievable duo.
The left hand on the other end would go for Carson.
Kept alive nicely underneath there by Godwin.
And then off the glass goes down only for two more.
And she's got it doesn't sit with the force inside they're not allowing.
And Shelby as far as she spins and she's surrounded by players who throw the ball and difficult for the mood at the moment that she's on the field and you have to throw it out of bounds for the 15 Katie Lynn in for duper number 11 and 25 of sophomore back in for model also 40 Abby Johnson stepping in for the lady wolves 530 left here in the third quarter Alison to talk a lot about her first 29 points in round one had 19 and round two double figures again in round three and of course 24 the other night.
The semifinal game against Laney is by far been the go to girl.
But Isaiah Carter in her own right, has also been in double figures, half the postseason games as well.
And they've also got some good output from Dantley and.
Reggie, who had ten points in that semifinal win over Laney.
And there's two more for Carter, and she's in double figures with ten 4418 monarchs trying to change the way it attacks the press.
And you'll notice that their biggest girl shall be far is back in the back court to help out with the pressure presents a tall target and on defense that they lined up last time with her at the top of a two to try to line the threes but she's got the height to do that here for a little bit of pressure out here like Savage though with it that time it worked with fire right across the open look swings it out that's centered and in and out of it.
The foul is there for fair good Look at the job there.
Underneath we talk about senior center.
This is really been sort of like ours in terms of the postseason for model 14 points against 11 round two, 13 against gassy and of course had that big game the other night.
They're 20 points against Henry County and the 6350 went for model over Henry and she was the seventh MVP of the region.
Her jumper works inside here blocking foul over the ball on to Andrea Carter.
Looks like she can operate anywhere on the court.
But in this second half, she's found a seam on an orange juice.
She's found a hole in the middle defense and allows you to drive based on it set up to here she draws a foul a chance to get a couple.
Looks like we've got a time out on the floor here with 349 left in this third quarter a full time out 4420.
Buford leads it right here.
The Lady Wolves trying to capture a state title.
They've been a mainstay in the postseason for years.
And of course, they've had to contend with Gassy.
And of course, Wesley, who was in the same region there for a while, of those three teams, of course, went back and forth, beaten on each other.
Wesley, of course, since has dropped a single won a state title here earlier this afternoon.
Well, there was a time when that double region, which had Buford and Wesley in the GMC and end page Yeah, right.
That that was some of the very best girls basketball in the entire state of Georgia.
There were schools told not to omit holy innocents.
Yes, additional power of the same operation.
But now, of course, model played by day earlier this year, just a four point differential there.
What a Blue Devils on top look again 31 at old model into this ballgame right here unbeaten and a battle saint faith before them the the undefeated Fayette County lady Tigers in class for and who came in undefeated and that didn't seem to work out for them Stone Mountain right five numbers on the day with 349 left will step aside 4520.
Buford leads it back with more when we return.
Zach Young, the headmaster, said, We're deep.
We didn't know they were this deep.
Three point shot at the buzzer off the mark by Daniels.
And that will do it.
And the celebration is on at midcourt.
Wesleyan wraps up their fifth state title with a 7940 win, and they are the Ducks 4520 Buford over model in this class to a girls GHC state basketball championship Dave Garner Dick Williams with you John Nelson courtside today along with the rest of our GPB crew.
Wall to wall action is championship weekend continues here and it's also make it madness.
Yes that's what a lot of local folks have dubbed it over the years.
And of course, the making sinner flick slash coliseum as it was formerly known there, of course, playing host to semifinal games for the last 40 years.
The most common championship venue in city final venue is the state of Georgia.
I refereed several wonderful sectionals in this place was rocking, especially in the southwest, making the state dominance.
This place was just That was a barn.
A barn, a fire.
Know I said a moment ago that undefeated Fayette County, the lady Lady Tigers in the quarter lost to Stone Mountain.
They actually lost to southwest Japan United then.
I don't know how that came out of my mouth.
Shelby Fair points up the shot right here.
Ferris had a pretty good stroke here today.
She connects for eight points here.
She's doing her job, and then she got it.
Now go at the top of the defense to get those long arms up against Alvis at the other end.
Sarah Dempsey, number ten five eight senior in the lineup.
They're trying to keep it inside knocked away though that's Evans blocking fouled and back the other way it looks like I'm going to be called against the lady Blue Devils it will be Buford basketball Let's take another look at it right here to see what happens on this play as she tried to push through the screen.
Yeah, Synnott right there, I believe.
Yes.
And she tried to push through the screen.
That was what the problem was.
So that's going to be her first three team fouls here in the second half.
It's kind of a contrast here a little bit from what we saw in the first half.
Both teams basically hit the bonus fairly early on their end here.
Just three fouls altogether together, all three on, of course, on model.
Look at that working side.
Oh, nice job Danley.
She's got two more leads, all scorers with 14.
And how about Jocelyn Danley today the five nine senior certainly showed up in a big way.
Well, because she's able to clear it out inside because she's got smaller opponents than hasn't been one of those players that is necessarily red.
And there's a plus one situation for Joy Hoskins was going to say that Danley hadn't been one of the leaders statistically throughout the playoffs, but is certainly stepping up here today and the mascots getting it done on the other end.
Good to see her back on the floor after taking that tumble early.
The take that nasty fall hit her head.
And and there's nothing that John Nelson said.
They asked her the questions and she had the right answer.
Yeah, five points today for Hoskins.
A pair of rebounds for the senior playing her final game today as the Lady Blue Devil 23.
Michelle Godwin back in the lineup for the Lady Wolves.
Here's Hoskins trying to complete the three point play.
Anderson six points for Hoskins 3725, with 240 left in the third.
That was before team trying to claim the championship.
One of the few teams, as we mentioned earlier, that actually beat Wesleyan this year in single-A.
Now there's that left baseline again, there's a hole there is couldn't convert that one so you're trying to get across it got to be careful that is ten second ball right there all the way Warren Shields you take the last one with the basketball but still unable to get it across.
Coach Dirt's got to be pretty pleased with his team's effort, to say the least here today.
Does that show a lot of emotion over there?
And no, you know, he doesn't want to for the sake of his girls.
But again, the turnover taking away, he's a very positive coach.
Yeah.
He's always on the optimistic side pushing and he forgives some mistakes He knows the shots going to be missed every now and again.
It's really rare that those are rare tigers.
A rare one, very rare.
Turn to go to seven right back and watch out first glance, Anderson, all alone underneath with the steal, Blanch Halverson with the hook.
That's been the theme here today.
And it sure has.
But now here's Hoskins running the floor on the other end In that double team of guitar players, you had people trying to get rid of it.
It's a just in time beat to call their cross-court good look.
Hoskins three point shot all the way short and I'll take it out of there the other way by Bradley two on one on the other end trying to make the bounce pass right there just so the Carson but she'll bring it back out.
Buford has been reluctant to shoot the three for ever since success inside.
There's another muscle move to the hall.
Well, I tell you what, Danley is having a field day underneath here today for Buford.
And different model has taken away the three by moving that Shelby fan out there.
But Buford has just taken it right to the rim.
On the other hand, a tough shot would go a little bit off balance.
The foul is there, though, for Lauren Shields.
She has her first bucket of the goal that shields a 511 junior, good looking player, will be back next year for coach.
Echoes of his model team 5127.
Inside a minute here this third quarter goblin hanging on it here a little bit guarded by singer now they feel that way and that's what's so deadly here that Lady Wallace is going to slow it down a little bit and play for one last shot here.
Yeah, three quarters.
That's not a lot of trouble going back 10 seconds and 9 seconds.
Whistle there on center.
And I believe that's going to be three on her standard with four points here today.
Average of nine and a half will certainly need her to step up here in this next quarter if they want to have a chance.
As Taylor Martin comes in, Hoskins will sit three ball.
Halvorson will inbound it for the Lady wolves.
I would say with 11 the athletic move kick back out.
Danley is hitting from all over the floor.
Oh, my goodness.
18 points for Jocelyn Danley.
BLOCK stops right here.
It's 9 seconds, I think.
I think I want to set up to see exactly what time should be on the clock.
I don't think it ran quick enough because that inbounds play was made with 11 seconds left.
Well, they will they will take 2 seconds off.
Yeah, You got Patrick Dorsey fourth over step back.
And along with Redmond model will have it with 7 seconds left here before the end of the quarter and that's a happy lady Wolves bench right now All smiles so far for Buford in control of this game.
3 seconds left, may not get a shot off and they won't go defense once again by the labels who shut the door down?
Do it through three quarters.
It's the Buford Lady Wolves defeat.
This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station on Super Lady Wolves 5327 over the Model Lady Blue Devils.
They've gone to Dick Williams with you, John Nelson, courtside.
Let's throw it to him, John.
When he got one last round in the huddles, guys, plenty of fight left in model they are saying to get after it defensively so they get back in the ballgame for Buford plain and simple.
Play to win not to lose in to go you know caution no clock not when you're up by 26 points.
Just play hard.
You know what?
He was a poor state runner up in 85 and 99 to try to add a state championship here today, trying to make this trip here stick in 2009, ten years after their last finals appearance.
And so far, so good.
Again, they have been led today by Jocelyn Danley, who's at 18 points inside and out.
Yes, surprising me a great deal.
All over the place.
Blanche Anderson with 11 as well in double figures, and Andre Accardo also with a chance to rebound you very unselfish player.
Exactly.
And that's what you like to see.
You know, when you get to that college level, we're going to see a lot of the players over the course of this weekend play into the next level for sure.
Those college coaches, the guy like those key players, because you get to college, you're not going to you know, you might, but it was good clean contact having her on and they were both struggling for the loose ball.
Keep it inbounds.
Oh, you talk about the coaching staffs knowing each other.
You know, we talked about Coach Eckles being a seventh grader and going to a coach third and two camps.
Right.
There are some of the coaches have actually from the from the days of third being in Dade County.
Some of those coaches have come over from different schools model going to Buford so forth, so very familiar with each other.
And I know there's there's certainly no tricks, I guess, between these two teams here today.
No are no secrets.
And, you know, you think about Jean Jergens career.
He was at the state game and he sent a fabulous smallish player.
He was actually house to the University of Georgia.
She's won that lady both on the spot as the point guard.
And she learned that off from Coach Straighten up at day care.
In fact, several of these Lady Wolves college bound, it looks like Anderson is we know, of course, headed to Auburn.
But Dan Lee, with this huge day to day, certainly making the coaches it Valdosta State feel pretty good.
It looks like that's where she's headed.
Also, Lynn had it to all the throws there.
Katie Lynn, all the floor by the way, has a wonderful team this year led by Ken Colavita, former Saint Pius player.
They're a national contender in the Big three.
Roberts wants to tell the coach their coach, to take five.
Look at we should run it, kicking it out.
And there's the open shot for Audrey Dorsey.
Dorsey the five seven seniors playing your final high school basketball game for the Lady Wolves.
And there's a big pick right there by senior to certainly not afraid to stand in there Senior and of course the five foot ten frame there and she has certainly used it here a couple of times today.
You got to call those picks to save your players from injury.
That was a pretty hard hit.
You know, wholesale change, it looks like here for coach third seed.
Iverson, though, comes back in along with Dempsey and also a 24 They're Danley you saw stepping in farther and Carson make up the other two for Buford you get his Carter doesn't come out yeah he also has Carter stays there Alvaston gets lots of rest which allows her to play so hard on the on the full court press.
Do you think that's just the freshman treatment?
I mean, is that just the way it is?
You know, being a younger player?
I guess I just think it's because she is so quick on defense and she certainly runs the offense.
But once again, there she is.
And actually being guarded closely by Alexa Evans.
That's a nice one right there she comes doing it all is Dempsey gives it back out.
No hurry right here while Evans Oh nice takeaway there momentarily by Taylor Martin but he gets it right back in this afternoon's finish The turnover totals are just going to be dreadful and it's you know we're going right back up to oh, well you've got to look at statistics like that.
Not only losing, but but some of those negative statistics.
So nice look now algorithms by Bob Graham, they're still short on that shot all the way taken down by Shields Barton back and working looking for there a nice look inside affairs at players down there defensively got a hand in the face unable to hit the shot Harris having a lot of trouble around the rim because there are a lot of big hands up there.
Yeah on the other end oh, seniors with a shot that'll be here for you have no choice.
You had a foul at this point in the game whether it's a407 17 fouls now so Dantley at the line right here the chance she's got a chance to break the 20 mark here with two free throws this is the first Boston's back in four to model along with Payton 35.
They're going to look at Dan Lee's numbers here today, 18 points and eight rebounds.
Wow.
The senior has had a huge afternoon and that will be a nice bus right back to you.
The second one on the way.
And she's one shy of that 20 point plateau.
That'll be something you'll remember for a long time there.
She's able to get it score that, you know, lead the way there.
20 something points in the state championship game.
Notice that Coach Jean Durden, in my view, has done the right thing.
Take the full court pressure away so at least model will be able to still remain in minutes.
Two to run a set offense and try to do what they've been prepared to do.
You know, you know, it's a tougher model to be in this ballgame here today without Ginny Jasper.
You certainly don't want to harp on that.
But the five nine junior, of course, be back next year averaging 14 points a game.
And we take that kind of output out of the lineup and her leadership as well, in addition to just her encore performance.
Certainly you miss a lot there.
So this model team hats off here today is hung with a very good view for team.
Well, not to take anything away from the model players, but with a player like that out, that's a key weapon that doesn't have to be defended.
The look of that Carter on the other end with 12 she's the best extra terrific player in the years ahead Haskins working here behind the arc that one partially blocked by two other than Carter able to do it at all WHISTLE right there and it looks like there will have an opportunity at the line Shelby Fero again the six one senior take another look at that.
Obviously throws it all the way down here.
It's a touchdown.
Andrea Carter They tried that early and misfired, but that's a yeah, there it is.
That's 194 foot touchdown.
Here you go.
Free throw is there for her.
Now she's in double figures.
Let's look at Shelby's numbers on the day.
The senior also four rebounds to go along with that gets the roll on the second 6030 as we hit the four minute mark here in this fourth quarter on that one.
A rare mistake today for the lady wolves that pass going a little there.
But Sierra dancing number ten, big crowd on hand here, you see, filling in nicely as we get set for boys action here a little bit later on, of course, 888 later on this evening.
Boys and girls matchups right here.
And that's what you like to see.
And, you know, when you talk about basketball in the state of Georgia, you talk about some of the best talent in the country, as far as I'm concerned.
Yep, absolutely.
Boys and girls.
Why do you think Bob Knight wanted the Georgia job?
Yeah, he said I'm going to recruit Georgia.
And you go to Moore for Daniel.
You asked for her total.
She's got 21.
Wow.
But you know, a guy like Bob Knight, he she knows where the talent is.
Oh, Shelby five.
That's that's a shame.
She's played really well in a bad situation.
And that's a shame to have to throw up like that and abuse the players Again, some fresh faces coming in, it looks like right here.
The lady wolves are all smiles there.
And Carter finally goes to the bench.
She gets a round of applause.
She deserves that branch.
Allison, always with that big smile on her face.
When I've refereed her, she's just always smiling and happy and darn glad to be out there.
Number 15 into the Ballgame.
Katie Lynn for Buford 23.
Michelle Godwin in there model with the perfect Yeah school Not able to hit the shot though and brought down by Dorsey.
You were telling me that before the game that Iverson wears a smile a lot throughout the ball game.
Absolutely.
Just happy to be out there and enjoys playing the game.
Sure.
That's what it's all about.
I mean, and she'll probably be on to some playground tomorrow, right?
Right, exactly.
She won't take a day off.
The Lady Vols have been firing up a lot of shots.
You know, we really haven't had a lot of time to really get in a lot of stuff here today because both teams have either thrown it up or have got a turnover.
That is a that's a two point shot put on the line right there for Godwin Michelle Godwin showing her shooting ability.
These young players in the game, they're a three point shot on the other end by Hoskins RIM's in and out taken down there by Godwin the final five senior Now they're handling the model pressure pretty easily both these teams very you know even statistically coming in and also game plan wise that prides itself on defense.
And they're very balanced really all the way across the board.
That's the way this model team has been.
The for team has also been that way as well, not relying on just that one superstar, although certainly, Alison sticks out.
But you've got Danley in a couple of other college bound players there as well.
I've got to cover on the top of my head most of that I already knew out here.
She was a wonderful player.
That part of the story showing you something, you get a lot with your sister, freshman.
What's a 14?
Yeah, that's going to be fun to watch her over the years and you know that Coach Byrd is looking forward to having her on the program as well.
That's right.
Because can't turn prior to high school.
So he's got a four year point guard.
Exactly.
They're going to look at Carson and some of those other lady wolves that have checked out here with under 2 minutes to play.
Nice pass inside.
Nice attempt by the peach possession force.
Coming up, the two a boys championship here in a little bit.
That ought to be a fun one.
They're indeed a lot of great talent in that game and with a lot of fans already filing in to watch it.
And that'll be coming up after a little pledge here by GPB.
Certainly want to encourage you to stay tuned to find out how to become a member right here of Georgia Public Broadcasting and want to encourage folks out there that are watching.
I mean, if you enjoy seeing our student athletes showcased on a state level here as they are on GPB, and if you enjoy the football championships along with these basketball championships, what encourage you to become a member and try to keep this programing on the air right here?
I will admit I'm a bit of a junkie, but I'll tell you why.
There are two weekends I mark on my calendar and that's the state football championships and the state basketball championship.
So you get to see the whole immense density of the state.
You know, you get the girls from marble.
Well, it looks like a fresh five on the floor for Coach Durden.
And I'm leaving those numbers to you.
They dare to walk on over here.
You got a challenge here.
23 and a whole fresh cast.
Well, Lacey, Pass, number one's in the ball game.
There you see the Lady Wolves come out Number 22.
Jessica Hours is in there.
Also number 12, Carli for formerly a sophomore, checks into the ball game series.
Williams, 55, is in there and it looks like number 30.
Also stepping into the lineup here today as well.
And that is an award that the five six junior, as you see the cuts going on over there at the bench there.
And Buford, of course, can feel it now with a minute 19 that foul was Travis Williams.
And here's Farrah blind.
I'll tell you what, she'll be fair.
Certainly did her part here today for Monday.
She had a lot of frustration around the rim with layups and the like, but she stayed after it.
She played hard and some of the defensive changes and offensive changes they made at the half showcased her a little more in the second of action.
So far with 12 points that you saw five rebounds second and all the way she's got 13.
Becca satin number 12 will step in there comes Evans back in the model You see the hugs there Abby Johnson, the senior and you know it's especially sentimental and emotional for those seniors who were playing their final high school basketball game right here in the big bucks for both teams that shot off their 2.4 Jessica hours and five six junior gets in the scorebook keep the newspaper clippings A on time on the other end snap five to freshman We talked about her early in the broadcast.
Doesn't play a lot but percentage wise a 43.2%, three point shooter, also an 80% free throw shooter when she's had the opportunity.
She's another one of those younger players that coach Sally Eckles goes lean on in the future.
Now, we have yet another way of of such a tribute.
But again, they have they dressed more players to the varsity games than any team I'm aware of around the state.
And I suspect it's probably an amalgam of their ninth grade team, their JV team.
Right.
And but it's an it's a nice touch in the fact that all these young girls get a chance to see what a state title games are all about in the back house in a big arena playing huge arenas, three point shot on the other end would not go get a couple of you saw players stepping in to throw for Constance Harrison and number 20 Kayla Birch a junior.
Harrison just a sophomore but a young talent.
Oh, there's an open look right there to the other end.
Nice also though, by Turrentine a sophomore there for a model to catch up to that one makes a ton of changes rolling out of bounds That was that was real good hustle to a girls state championship playing out here today at the May consider flex right here live on GPB.
Certainly want to say hi to the Georgia High School Association's job well done this weekend right here.
Of course, several games last night at the Arena Gwinnett Center and also several shout out to the crew of the arena.
That arena that fabulous that where they conducted business and helpful and in every way, a first rate operation translated over here nice little they consider blitz is there seen a shift south here three points down on the way on the other end off the glass it goes good for her after the ball with a hit nothing commonly known as an airborne.
Good for her.
6635 10 seconds last time winding down and the model lady Blue Devils will suffer.
Their first defeat of the year will finish the season as the state runner up at 31 in yard.
But it's the group Wendy Walsh, who will capture the 2009 state championship, a runner up twice in 85 and 89.
But in 2009, the hardware belongs to the Lady Wolves.
This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station on the day Buford Wolves capture the two a girls state championship.
John Nelson standing by with the winning coach John.
Thanks, guys.
Here with Coach Durden.
How does it feel to win your first state championship And one for Buford?
Oh, it feels great.
I'm just so happy for our kids, John, that they worked so hard to try to take our brothers another level.
And they deserve everything.
They get eight seniors.
What does it mean to them, looking at them from this entire point of view and seniors from their point of view, How does it feel?
Oh, I'm so happy for them.
They were there when I first got there.
So they deserve everybody is is a great group of girls, great good basketball players.
And when you talk about the youth shall lead them.
The freshman point guard talk about Andre.
Andre is special, no doubt about it.
She made special a special kid.
You know, that says a lot about our program for her to come in as a freshman and aim to welcome a lot of do as is all we didn't know about our program go enjoy it Jean thanks for your time.
That tie that he's wearing was a gift from his wife.
It's now officially Back to you guys.
All right.
Thanks, John.
Well, indeed, a big effort from Dan Lee, 21 points here today in the Buford Lady Wolves captured the state championship.
Dick, I've enjoyed it.
