And by viewers like you?
Yeah, it's the 25 GHC Girls Double-A basketball championship featuring Dade County and Wesleyan.
And good afternoon, everybody, and welcome.
As Championship Weekend Rolls on on GPB I'm Jim Tanaka coming out of Region six it's the Wolverines of Dade County coming out of Region eight it's the wolves of Wesleyan should be a good one.
The two guys to call in courtside are Dave Garner and Curtis Bunn.
All right.
Thanks, Jim, and looking forward to it.
I'm here with a guy that knows a little something about high school sports in the state of Georgia.
Curtis Bunn, thanks for being with us.
Curtis I'm looking forward to a great two versus three match up here in this girls championship.
Absolutely.
It's conflicting styles with it is a much more deliberate team.
They count.
He wants to put the tempo with the full court press and everything that they county does revolves around a sensational junior guard at this house just unbelievable player offensively he averages 23 points a game.
But what astounds me is 40% shooting from three point range.
Did you see her numbers right there?
23 points, 4.6 rebounds, three and a half assists and 6.3 steals.
She can pretty much do it all she can and she's the anchor of that full court press.
The defense that they have, they have played throughout the game, they're going to look at the starting five.
They're Reed Marlon Gowan, also Brook is a good post player and also can pop out, hit 20 foot shots as well.
And of course house as we talked about they're the go to girl in deed for the lady wolverines so they're going to look at coach Jean Durden his 14th year at Dade County.
This guy's an institution very popular up there in Trenton, Georgia.
And he's done a remarkable job with that program.
Turning the tables a little bit, talking about Wesleyan.
The Lady Wolves come in here at number two, ranked in the state, and there's their big player right there, Sarah Moye.
Yeah, this is familiar territory for Wesleyan.
They won the championship last year, two years ago, 2002.
They also won it in Sarah Moore.
That is at the center of their activity averages a double double a good pass out of the post and she has great complementary help here.
You look at their starting five Smith, Laura Luckhurst Moye and the two Witney twins there you've got indeed a good duo there and Elise and Caroline and certainly a deadly combination.
There are a lot of stars they're going to look at Coach Jan Azar in her eighth season started the program back in 1997, has done a great job, a remarkable job with this program.
But throughout the year, let's go ahead, throw it down to legendary voice Eddie Ashley, RPA announcer For today's introductions, Travis Tritt Prison, Georgia with a record of 27 wins and three losses dressed in maroon as your visitors on the scoreboard and the Wesleyan Wolves out of North Cross, Georgia, with a record of 29 wins and two losses dressed in white as your home team, may I have your attention for the starting lineups?
First, for Dade County, head forward number 22, a five foot seven senior.
Rachel Reed.
At forward number ten, a five foot seven senior Jamey Moreland at center number 32, a six foot senior, Jessie Yao in I've got a six foot senior, Brittney also from at guard number 23, a five foot six junior.
Ashley Towns and Dane County's head coach Jean Durden.
And now for Wesley at forward number 34, five foot eight senior Erika Smith.
At forward number 22, a five foot six senior Laura Luckhurst at center.
I'm a 26 foot senior.
Sarah Moye at guard number two, a five foot eight junior.
Elise Whitney, Right.
Guard number four, five foot eight, junior Caroline Whitney And which leaves head coach Jan Azar.
So there you have it, the starting five for Dade County, the starting five for Wesley in the Double-A girls state championship.
Up next from the Coliseum when we return.
Let's get started.
Let's get started.
This started getting started here and running and running.
Dade County Lady Wolverines, Wesleyan, Lady Wolves set to go out of the championship.
Let's meet the other member of our team, John Nelson, standing by courtside, John.
Let's talk about what happens when you make a team mad.
And that's what happened to Wesleyan when they lost in the region tournament.
When they came into the playoffs, they ended up giving only 40 in the first two games, 27 two Holy Innocents gave up 57 to Dublin, but they forced 34 turnovers.
So today what two teams really like the press, they're going to see a lot of this, some of this and maybe getting up into people's faces.
Let's send it back to you guys for the start of the game.
All right.
So that might be a little too close for me right there.
But now look forward to talking to you today there, John.
And we'll check back in with you here as we get set to crank it up.
Dave Gardner, Curtis Bond with you right here on GPB and the girls state championship game between Dade County, who comes in ranked third in the state and Wesleyan.
Again, the number two ranked team defeating number one Holy Innocents in the Elite eight.
And Wesley will control the opening tip up top.
That's Laura Lancer.
You might remember her older sister from last year, but a senior on this team now starring at the two lane.
The lady Greenway.
She made some big threes last year in the championship game right off the bat ceremony makes her presence felt a big six foot senior, wasting no time getting into this one, Right?
That's a good start for the champions.
You can tell they're much more comfortable right now or very comfortable at least playing in this game of this magnitude.
Britney also broke number 50 will be a player to watch today for Dade County.
They're going to look at how she puts up a shot, misses on her first attempt.
And boy, close it out of there.
Ashley Harris, number 23, not going to be the biggest player on the floor size wise.
But boy, oh, boy, did she shoot it up a lot.
She has a confidence in her game that makes you know, she's a ball player first looking inside, boy again, posting up and knocks it down and ceremonies off to a fast start.
Curtis, you better believe they're going to continue to go inside to her until they kind of show the way to stop her.
Delon feeds it inside to also Brook back out as house sets the offense up here for the older sister.
Also moving on to the collegiate level and off the dribble a little baseline shot wouldn't go and more again with another board right there brings it down wisely and off and running Long pass on the other end there to Whitney and from outside that's Carolyn with his three point shot off the mark there and brought down by Moreland Pops on the other end one on one lays it up and in good looking move out there by Ashley out Tough angle Yeah she had actually lost control of the ball was going to shoot her left handed but put a defender in her way and got it up there anyway in here, back inside.
Boy kicks it aside this time to Whitney.
Three point shot off the mark again and a whistle underneath.
It looks like they're going to get also separate for that one.
Britney is going to be a player to watch offensively.
She really she plays that close, but she could step out of those 20 footers all day long as well.
We're going to have to stay out of foul trouble there.
There's foul for his teen, foul for other team.
And you're going to look at Caroline Whitney who feeds it.
And that was number 34 right there.
Erica Smith, senior averaging four points a game.
But quickly into this one and it's a62 advantage for the lady wolves.
That's unacceptable on board defense right there.
And then the ball handler penetrating the lane and then dish to an open teammate broke the defense there.
That's Rachel Reid up top with the basketball over to Jamie Moreland trying to feed it inside there.
But Smith shut the door.
Now Moreland works the baseline and a whistle for an offensive foul.
It looks like going to be called on Moreland first as I see it.
And again right here trying to work that baseline and good position underneath right there by the Lady Wolves.
Here's the first look at De County pressure.
Both teams like to pressure the basketball.
He puts up another shot off the mark there, but Elise picks it up.
Caroline Whitney, so far, not gun shy here.
She's pulled the trigger from outside a few times.
There's a three point shot.
It's there for Walker's Laura Luckhurst with a three point basket.
And what a start for the lady Wolves who hit a92 forcing a date County timeout.
Absolutely not.
The start date County meeting.
Look at it again right here from outside of a three point shot by Luckhurst.
And we'll take another look at it right here as well on another angle, as you see, long range right there and nothing but the bottom of the net for the senior averaging 67.6 points a game this year.
Coach Jan Azar again started this program back in 1997 and it only in its eighth year of existence, two time state champs looking for their third.
They've been a semifinalist, they've been to the Elite Eight, and that's pretty much made up their last four or five years.
Just impressive for that young of a school.
It's a great run.
Obviously a coach who knows how to teach and promotes ball self, his ball players moving and sharing the basketball and that's what you see at the heart of their success so far.
Scoring going on number 54.
And again, there's a three point shot by hats off the mark there.
The ball still loosened last touch by the Lady Wolverines.
You know, we really thought that Wesley might come out in the press because they do that a lot.
Both these teams press, as you can see.
But Wesley is laying off here a little bit, pretty much going, man, right now.
And out.
Yeah they say seems press.
They're like to be pressed and I think they counted speaking with we'll got to hear your problem if you went to it at some point later in the game Maryland Whitney shot off the mark.
Here's how it's once again dribbling the basketball stay in tied honor and a turnover right there into the hands of lockers to feet, to the hand to at least.
Whitney splits a pair of defenders in the give right there.
Little backyard basketball boy unable to hit the shot double.
He got a push and it looks like an offensive foul going to be called.
That's an unfortunate mix.
It's a beautiful execution.
And fast break again, sharing the basketball unselfishly produced the easy shot that normally she would make a nine to start here for the lady wolves at last foul was on Sarah Moye so she picks up her first here inside the first 4 minutes of the game.
Dade County, a team that really likes to deny the passing lanes.
Defensively, they get offense right there from Brittany.
Also Brook that's just a smart play by them.
Sarah just picked up her first fouled go right at it and a foul going to be called on the other end there also Brook averaging ten points a game as a senior this year for Dade County for the third straight I was called by Laura Conforto over first team second base Whitney.
I talked to Carolyn again twins twin juniors certainly complement and more lockers.
Well there's a three point shot by Luckhurst off the mark brought down by Hope night who just checked into the game a moment ago and the Wolverines trying to generate some more offense here.
A five point game trying to cut into that lead foot on the line right there shot no good by Riley Brown checks at Jamie Moreland Wesley back on the other end here Good look inside out there boy What's the handle I got tied up jump ball for possession arrow to the lady Wolverines good defense right there.
Time makes it up inside with the big girl.
The Wolverines have done a good job of not letting this game get out of the way, get out of hand early.
But they got to have to find some offense, someone other than their star, Jesse Gowan, in the lineup for Dade County.
I just saw Kelly Hall number five, check it in for the Lady of Wolves Hall, a sophomore averaging around around four points a game She really scrappy on defense on the other end shot off the mark there Megan Bradford tried to get it to go but good another sophomore a lot of younger players in the lineup to both teams here today.
A very experienced side a little bit short there and only the third whistle the record on Kelly Hall it looks like and you see coach Durden over there 14 years at Dade County has done a remarkable job.
Lady Wolverines look at the first state championship, averaging right around 58 points a year.
But this is a team that really prides themselves on defense.
They're allowing under 46 right now.
They won their games by an average of 18 points a game this year.
So they haven't been challenged too much.
Second round, they were up 4117 at halftime over Laney, ended up winning that game 7340.
There was a turnover right there.
Lady wolves back and running laser again on the move kicks it back out to hall and Luckhurst up top fires a pass right back in there a turnaround listen rattles it home that big the with when you get in getting off the bench is always significant there jack up top but again that's Ashley house stay focused on in the pre-game show this team's load has got a lot of players but certainly stands out they have a foul on the floor there before the bucket and it looks like we're going to get more for that one too.
That's going to be her second.
That's a significant call.
Actually.
She tried to take a chance a couple of sit down before and that was a no call.
This time they got it for the block.
See it right here.
Didn't quite have those feet set in time and looked like although, you know, those calls always seemed to go either way.
I guess a little bit of pressure right here trying to get right up on those defenders, as John talked about in the pre game there a little bit right before tip offs.
And you see a lot of hands and faces here today.
Yeah, that's the only way to defend the team that can really shoot the ball in the period that you have.
You have to close out that space inside a minute and a half here in the opening period, Wesleyan up 11 for over Dade County, a little baseline shot to be short by a house.
Ashley Haas with just two points here so far in the game and she hasn't made a jumpshot yet.
I think she needs to settle down probably a little too excited.
And maybe at the end of the first quarter she'll get a late zero and Whitney is going to be fouled, it looks like, by Moreland and Rachel Reed for the foul There.
Wesleyan will inbound underneath her own goal here at Wesleyan a lot of depth That's pretty much the three things about this team that stand out their depth, their energy and their intensity.
They pretty much bring it all to the table.
That's right.
And, you know, the other thing is they have experience.
They have girls who've been in a lot of playoff games.
You know, unfazed by the conditions that was there.
Elise Whitney, as you see the field goal so far, this one right there.
Dade County, two of nine, but Wesleyan faring a little bit better as they go up 13 to 4 here inside a minute in this opening period that was lost last area, 511 junior averaging ten points.
Shot on the other end off the back of the iron.
No good scramble for the ball over there and the lady Wolverines come up with it.
Dade County, though, really looking for some offense right here.
It's a nine point game early on.
They don't want to get too far behind because this is a tough Wesleyan team to try to make up ground on.
This team had this four points.
But less than 30 seconds left in the quarter is unbelievable.
Knocked away.
Good hustle right there by Hounsou leaves the floor there momentarily over there on the bench.
She's all right.
The tough player right there.
Again, we're at number 23, just a junior to.
She'll be back.
That's a pretty good number.
She's we're indeed Caroline Whitney to inbound it inside 20 seconds here.
Now, Lady Wolves trying to tack on another one right here before the end of the period.
Got away with the goal.
Yeah, the sir puts up another shot, and I believe we're going to get a foul right there.
On Jessie Gowan Downs, another one of those players that brings some size to the table.
They really did have a lot of big girls with Gowan right at six foot, a big senior there.
They're really going to have to rely on her down low today against their boy.
Right.
And that's why it's important for her.
And also, Brook to stay out of foul trouble trying to serve at the line out here.
She's been huge off the bench.
That's five points right there.
In the first quarter alone.
You see ten points on the season, 7.2 rebounds do.
So she's been big defensively here, not a lot of second and third opportunities so far.
Pair right there for Lilly makes it 15 to 4 on under 3 seconds here shot rattles in and out of there at the buzzer No good and that'll do it for an action back first quarter but it's the Wesleyan lady Wolves up 15 to 4 here at the Macon Coliseum.
We'll be right back with quarter number two.
You're watching high school championship basketball on GPB.
And back here at the Macon Coliseum, the Wesleyan Lady Wolves up 15 to 4 over the Dade County Lady Wolverines.
But Dade County still fire.
If you look at those fans cursed, Here they are.
While they're going to have to transfer some of that energy and effort to their team right now, they've gone out.
Curtis Bond with you.
John Nelson, courtside as we get set to go back to action here to start, quarter number two from Macon, again, the Double-A girls state championship, the Wesleyan Lady Wolves, the defending champs taking on Dade County, the Lady Wolverines trying to generate some offense right here, a little bit of a slow first quarter.
There's a turnover right there, at least with you back on the other end.
Racing everybody to the hoop.
Shot wouldn't go in handsprings and out of there and now it's the lady Wolverines who are off and running.
House makes a little move.
They're going to be way off and traveling to be called on house and back the other way.
So a quick start here to period.
Number two is she's struggling right now in every aspect, just can't get her teammates involved or actually she shared the ball pretty well.
They're not making shots and she's certainly not hitting the shots that she's accustomed to making.
Dade County with four turnovers, the Lady Wolves with just one in that first quarter and hounds with just two points.
That's a big reason why the Lady Wolverines are down right now.
You can't put it all on one player.
Here's Hatch, though, on the other end there.
Lost the handle there, but got it back and saved it and double dribble right there on house and obviously out of rhythm right now a little bit.
She may need to sit down just for a minute, gather her thoughts and then come back in.
Oh, you got to you know, you're in this this big venue here for a lot of these folks.
It's the biggest place they've played all year long.
Of course, they can't.
Having to go through the over the forum and Roam and all those different places as well.
But still some jitters in the state championship.
Absolutely.
And conversely, Wesleyan has been here many times before, very comfortable in this environment.
Good crowd on hand.
As expected this week.
It is championship weekend rolls on here, be played on the other end trying to get it inside to more.
And that was really the game plan in that first quarter dump it inside to to service.
You got a couple of quick buckets there, finished the quarter with four points and you see number 22.
Rachel Reed, check back in for Dade County.
I'm looking for more of that, though, Curtis, A doubling inside of that big girl.
Yeah, she had to file to she had to come out.
But then Lily LaFleur came in and really gave them a lift with six points.
And I was just told by Larry Hoskins in the agency that they transferred from reading with this loss in the championship game last night.
The car was here.
So she's used to playing at a high level and she comes to a team, she's going to see it to come off the bench.
But that's great experience, a great talent.
I think it says a lot about the depth in Double that You've got a player that did start on a five, a team that's coming off the bench on a on a Double-A team there.
But nonetheless, she's certainly capable of being a starter with her numbers and that just shows you the depth that the Lady Wolverines have shot off the mark.
Dade County off and running again outs runs the point and shoots the basketball real well, have 46 of the team's 53 and the region six championship this year so she's capable of going off at any time.
Yeah absolutely.
I think she just needs to make a layup or something to get us some confidence that she can actually put the ball in the hole and that may open up her entire offensive game and the whistle foul going to be called.
It's going to be on Reed.
It looks like it might be her second first hole.
Coach Jean Durden looking on here.
Take another look at that last one there.
It's hard to stay in front of her.
She's such a crafty ball handler and such imagination with the ball.
She's going to get into the lane.
It's just a matter of whether they help a minute to see at the line they're right, sir.
As you see, there's are numbers 23 points on the season, four points, six rebounds.
And as we talked about assists and steals to go along with it, she's really the total package and she's 73% from the foul line.
So that's a for her to miss.
This really indicates that she's not on her game at all right now three points in the early going for house but it's still a ten point advantage for the lady wolves.
Wesley Wesleyan again defending state champs when it back in 2002, as well as semifinalist in 013. shot by least with the off the mark.
But Caroline finds bird keeps it alive.
All right back into the middle.
Take it away by Brittany.
Also Brook also Brook has a very nice accomplishment there and complements Ashley House very well because she's got that outside shooter and you've got that big post player inside.
That's really what you need to get to this level to get to a state championship.
Absolutely.
And as you said, also, because she's on the outside, you know, she's been picked up mini three point shot by Ashley Hanson.
There it is right there, folks.
If she gets warmed up and it's going to go away in a hurry.
Yeah, that to me.
So I'm surprised that they didn't put the full court press on after their basket reserve on the other end.
They're trying to throw the shot, draws the foul and Lilly will go to the line right here as we take another look once again, pounded it inside using the size to its advantage.
Very talented is able to maneuver around the defender and also Brook can get to the free throw line.
It's going to be the second foul.
Also, Brook will serve missing on the first half really again a 511 junior puts up the second one off the front of the line.
No good boy keeps it alive though nearly has a trip away traveling going to be called on boy And back to the lady Wolverines.
You kind of get a sense that they kind of feel a little bit more confident now.
Their best player has got a shot from the perimeter.
I think they feel like maybe she can get them right back in.
Actually, they only down seven to really kind of take them all in a direction that they need to go.
We saw coach Jan Azar on the Wesleyan bench there trying to settle her girls back down here today, trying to put together a little bit of a run right here and be back in this game.
It's a seven point game inside, 5 minutes here in the first half.
That's for another three point shot that went off the mark.
There might have been partially tipped but kept alive on and taken away by boy and in the face right there and at least with you back on the other end lays it up.
Shot a little short there Dade County back on defense to disrupt that play a little bit but a foul underneath there and a little contact here.
I tell you what, this big camera crew earning their paycheck this week in the guise of hung in there.
And that's that's taken one for the team right here.
Yeah.
He got taken out by a two day county man.
Oh, man.
Hey, I don't want to hang in there, though.
He took a charge down there, and you got to like those tough camera guys who gave just a down with the basketball, rather, on the other end.
Sierra down in the lineup for Wesleyan, right in your living room right here, folks.
Watch this.
Oh, man, please.
Wow.
Right back on the chin.
I guess he's all right.
Yeah.
As you see, Elise Whitney at the line knocks down the first when neither team really knocked down the nets on these free throws.
So far to the series numbers this year, eight points a game, couple of rebounds, couple steals.
They're missing on the second one right there, ballers.
Good job by four pointer to keep it alive.
They're on the floor and that's going to be on Boy, I do believe that's going to be three on Sarah Moore.
So maybe a little game plan here by Dade County.
Maybe it just worked out that way.
But they got their big girl in trouble.
That's going to be key.
It is in the beauty of Western.
Has those bring in the first.
You really won't drop off that much you jazzy coach Durden trying to rally his lady Wolverines here as you mentioned averaging right around 58 points a game offensively defeating Buford in round one and Laney gassy in overtime is an exciting game They're cutting backdoor buckets like get the pass there and out of bounds first Gassy was right fifth and that was a big emotional game There you see Moye having to sit it out on the bench right here.
He's got 4 minutes left.
I was about to note the time, 4 minutes left.
She's on the bench.
It's great that he comes in and does this.
He's been doing all day scoring on the inside, really picking up the slack for to serve a serve with a big first half here.
And that was a tough shot on that one.
Blocked away right there by Allison watch and back on the other end three on three momentarily Lady Wolves winning in the lane right there.
Got to stop the ball right there.
Drove right into that lane.
Just couldn't quite get the shot to go.
I'm really surprised the county is not applying more pressure.
I know you have to get into the press after making the basket and they've had only three or four of them.
But on the occasions when they did have a chance, they played back in the zone and that's really not their strength.
Back up top again.
Allison Ward in the lineup for 511 Junior shot from outside three point shot would be awesome aren't kept alive and right there on the line and it will stay with Wesleyan Lady Wolverines unable to keep it in play there Wesleyan is quicker to the ball much more aggressive, much more assertive in the school ball reflect that ten point game right here 324 left in the first half Dave Garner Kyrgyzstan with the Jon Nelson courtside championship weekend rolling on right here live on TV Lady wolves trying to make it three state championships in the last four years.
What a run for coach Azar and these lady wolves and right there number 32 Sarah Dell in the book just a sophomore.
They've got so many weapons you could talk about.
Yeah I know we talked a lot about ceremony, but you can really talk about this team all day long.
Just getting great production off the bench house.
Meanwhile, struggling on the other end with it kicks it back out.
It's Kelly Hall trying to work that baseline shot wouldn't go Ashlee hands out of there with it one on one to let her teammates catch up now makes a move and it's knocked away.
Good defense right there.
Carolyn Whitney right in the face as she brings it back across.
Midcourt behind the back.
Check it out.
Three point shot, no good by what?
And travel going to be called care of teammates.
Fight for the ball right there.
So back to the eight guys What a sequence this thing really going back some more and she has really is struggling it is really now about her fourth in the action instead of being a little patient and waiting for the actually the opportunity to come to her, she forced that one on one situation where she could have pulled up, look for a teammate or just taking a dump side as opposed to driving partly to the basket if it inside there.
Nice feed to and kicks it back out night It's a three point shot off the mark Wesley and back the other way here under 2 minutes left in this first half it move right along take it away by ATS it comes up with another steal try to finish on the other end draws the foul won't get the bucket there but will get to the line if she averages more than six steals a game and you see why great hands great anticipation and just eager to get the basketball piece and how it's at the line here with six points as you see the takeaway there by Ashley.
And then on the other end, trying to finish, Alex gets on the first free throw.
She has seven of its first nine points here, 20 to 9 at least.
Whitney stepping back in for Wesley and Coach Durden was trying to pick it up here.
You see how it's numbers today.
We say she's had a quiet first half, which she has for her standards, but she still accounted for almost all the points.
And she's going to need some help.
Somebody has got to make some open shots because she's getting a lot of attention and she is sharing the basketball enough for someone else to make some shots to keep them in it.
Looking for Brittany.
Also, Brooke, to step it up as well here.
A nice pass inside there into time, though.
It was Whitney taken away by that.
Some contact underneath there look like Sarah, Madam got hopped in the right in the nose there.
An inadvertent elbow looked like the 2017 foul speed about fire.
Back on the other end here.
And as you see Coach Azar on the bench not liking the call.
They're talking things over with the official.
And so she was discussing that elbow just by the gallon, knocks down the first one down averaging 9.6 points a game this year.
A senior six footer down with a pair right there makes it a nine point game, 20 to 11, fairly low scoring first half and still a minute 20 left, though.
The Lady Wolverines cut is back down to nine here, Cross-court Pass right there and underneath the handle by Caroline Whitney.
So a turnover and they've got to go to try to cut into that gap even further with Lindsay's help they counted all day there was great potential to blow this game open but turnovers missed opportunities in the lane.
Three missed free throws and they're only down by nine with the minute ten left.
Wesleyan averaging right at 66 points.
The game on the season offensively and so therefore it's pretty low scoring game so far in the first half neither team really in a great rhythm just go knock it down the nets will talk about a double dribble right there.
A lot of it is great defense but it was big on ball pressure by LSU to force that turnover.
So the lady wolves here going to try to extend the lead back out here with double digits inside a minute here up top Caroline Whitney cross-court BLOCK first, three points off the mark.
No good.
Whitney keeps it alive.
And a what?
A save right there on that baseline.
What a good play by a little player.
Just stick a nose in there to get that rebound among the big players to serve all almost got a chance at a three point play right there Drew the foul And we'll go to the line here.
The transfer from a program like 310, which is a quality program, obviously, by the fact that they were in the championship game last night.
You come to a team, you want to get to the championship in believing, Sure, this is working hard to create three fouls.
On Rachel Reed or misses on the first of player substitutions here now somewhat number ten, checking in the Spurs numbers right there, eight points, four rebounds for the junior and the second one on the way.
Also off the mark there and last touched by the Lady Wolves, Jamie Moreland over there trying to save it had it knocked away.
So 32 seconds left here again no shot clock and high school basketball.
So Dade County can work it down here.
Lady Wolverines trying to cut it to a seven, possibly a six point game.
Kent tornado from up top hits the shot and that's a three point shot.
Laura contorted a freshman.
That's huge for Dade County.
Sometimes you got to go to your younger players and that's what the lady Wolverines did right there.
And Lester draws another foul on the other end of a very late call to the basket by the freshman with significant they only down by six to go down by eight at the half considering they only made four field goals in the entire first half.
That's not a bad position to be in.
Not bad at all.
You know, a lot of times we talk about the Stars championship sometimes have to do as much with the youth as well in the game like this.
Anybody can step up.
We've seen a lot of younger players come out of nowhere and really contribute to these.
This is on the second round there, 2114, seven point game here, time winding down, couple of seconds at the buzzer.
Oh, shot.
Is there a three point shot for Hope night The sophomore another youngster steps out with a three point shot and wow careless.
That changes the complexion of this first half absolutely a smart play by and she was right there everyone expecting her to take the shot she drew the defense and found her open teammates who did what they needed her to make the open shot.
What a big bucket right there before the half.
And her halftime score is 21 to 17.
John Nelson standing by.
The coaches are here with Giannis.
Ah let's talk about that three right before the end of the half That's a big one.
A good shot she made it we had a hand in her face know let's talk about things defensively what how you were going to go straight up and she was getting hers and there wasn't getting a lot of support early but things seem to be turning something.
I think we're doing a great job defensively on House.
We've got to make the easy baskets down our end and we've got to make our free throws.
So and hopefully we'll get to the free throw line a little bit more in the second half.
Giannis, our thanks for your time Good luck in the second half of send back over to finish by halftime score 2117.
We're back with halftime at a moment Welcome back to the Macon Coliseum.
It's halftime of the two girls basketball championship Wesleyan leading it 2117 over Dade County.
The two way boys teams that are warming up in the background there for the two boys championship coming up.
That, of course, is East Hall and Greenville.
Now let's go courtside and John Nelson John.
Jim, it is recess.
Therefore I'm in the principal's office.
I have Chris Cleveland, the principal from Wesleyan.
We will catch up with you in a moment.
Let's start with the new guy, Cal Riddle from Dade County.
What's this ride been like for you guys?
I think it's been five years since the title.
Since the title appearance.
And what's it been like for everybody up there in Trenton?
Well, we've had a wonderful we've had a wonderful ride this year.
And now being in the state tournament is we're accustomed.
Coach Gardens had a wonderful program.
13 of the 14 seasons we've been in state tournament, we've been at Mike and two of the two of those years and finals and lost both of those last second shots, but took a team this year.
I wouldn't say a young team, but We graduated six or seven seniors last year and have really jailed together.
The chemistry on the team is really you can see it come together the last, you know, couple of weeks before the region tournament started.
And, you know, he's he's got a wonderful assistant up there, Randy Watson, just like having two head coaches.
He's got a wonderful middle school program and just a great fan base here.
I mean, anybody can tell you the way we bring people out.
Was it one of those situations up there in Trenton where the last one out has to turn the lights up for the rest of us to get down here to make it?
There's not too many laughs, I can tell you.
I can tell you that we had a bunch of people down here on Thursday and, you know, even a bigger crowd today.
But yeah, even if even a four hour trip is not going to keep our our fan base away, definitely not now as the crow flies, just so everybody knows, they aren't up with their Georgia geography, You got to go through another state to get to Trenton right some time sometimes.
Now you can take that.
If you're going to take the quickest route, you go through Chattanooga, come back down, because we're in the northwest, most north west, most county adjacent Alabama and in Alabama, Tennessee.
But if you if you decide to go through Walker County or up through Rome and and go through over Lookout Mountain, we're between Lookout Mountain and Sand Mountain.
Beautiful area up there.
Absolutely beautiful area.
Yes, it is.
I can vouch.
Cal, hang with me.
Okay.
Let's go over to the other side, The Wesleyan School, Chris Cleveland, the principal.
This is getting old hat, but it's not old hat.
Well, it never gets old to compete for state championships.
But certainly the recent history of our girls basketball program has been fantastic.
Coach Azar and her staff coach Man of the Week, Coach Blackard do a great job preparing our girls.
Our girls work extremely hard in the classroom and on the court.
And I think all of that is evidenced here today in this game.
And she's the one that started it.
And this is a tradition.
Talk about the tradition that not just the athletic program, but the academics have created.
And I think the eight years the school has been in existence, the school has been a high school, a K through 12 school for about nine years now.
We're in our ninth year, and the tradition we've established is one of wanting to be excellent academically.
We certainly want to field competitive athletic teams.
We want to have a fine arts program that's second to none.
But our main focus is to be a Christian school.
We want to serve God in everything we do.
So we hope that everything we do reflects glory on our Father and we hope that we do that in all of our aspects, not to be geographically equal.
I'm going to ask Chris the Wesleyan School.
I know how to get there.
Where are you guys?
We're located in Norcross, so if you come around to 85 and head north on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, you'll run smack dab into our campus.
You can't miss it.
I feel like I'm running MapQuest here.
That's the principal's office this time around.
Recess still continues with Jim.
All right.
Thank you, John.
Appreciate the Internet.
Information on how to get to one place to another.
Okay.
We're going to the second half of this ball game.
We're going to turn it over to Dave Garner and Curtis.
But all right.
Thanks, Jim.
And you know, Wesley.
And titled A running gun as their offense has been running fun here in the first half, though, again, Dave Garner, along with Curtis Bunn and Curtis, a first half that really was back and forth.
And neither team really getting into a great rhythm offensively.
But I'm looking for teams to settle down a little bit here in the second half.
Here's the first half.
Yeah, absolutely.
I was surprised that both top teams were pressing as much inside.
You see there Eric Smith featured in the senior, but they could contribute to her and that's Luckhurst hitting the three looked like their system was.
Now it's late and it's inside and he also looks going for them they need her inside.
And that was a key to the game right there for Wesley and off the bench later in the third coming in providing big poise and then the star Bay County Howard's hitting her only three of the first half deep threes though was significant as a freshman right there Laura Quattro and then the one at the end of the half right there was big sophomore Hope Knight putting them within four at the break and you get a look at the halftime stats there again 2117 R Score field goals a little slow date only five of 21 Wesleyan, a little bit better field goal percentage, you see it right there, three point shots, one of eight for the lady wolves.
Their rebound 16 to 10 advantage for Wesley.
And as you see the turnovers and the free throws there as well, both teams hitting four at the line.
They're a lesser a nine points.
The first big first half as we as we talked about.
Let's get thrown out over to John Nelson, standing by with the coach here with Gene Darden.
That was a big three you got at the end of the half.
Huge.
Our kids made a couple plays.
They were real nervous coming out offensively.
Hopefully, we've dug our way back into this thing, but they've got a good team.
That's what you wanted to do with the second quarter.
You wanted to try and claw back into the game offensively, I think was the word you used.
It was in the hole.
I told them in the first quarter, you know, we came out a little nervous.
Most of the guys let us and get a big lead on us and now we just got to take it a little bit of time and claw back in to give ourselves a chance to win it and then.
All right, Jeanne Darden, thanks for your time.
Good luck.
Second half.
We'll send it back over to Damon Curtis.
All right.
Sounds good.
Getting set to rock and roll here for the second half of play.
Back in a moment here from the Macon Coliseum.
It's the Double-A Girls State Championship live on GPB.
Lady Wolverines cheerleaders in the house here today, along with the Wesley Lady Wolves both sets the cheerleaders firing up the crowd here as we get set to open up the second half here.
Dave Garner, Curtis Bond, John Nelson, courtside with us.
See the girls state championship match up right here Wesleyan with a 2117 halftime lead will open up the half with the basketball as you see their top scorers will serve with nine off the bench.
Moore with four and oil lock first with three.
WHISTLE right off the bat, right.
And it was a half basically dominated by Wesleyan.
But those three point shots from those younger players by they got him right back into the game.
Absolutely.
And you see their leading scorers Ashley hatch with seven and eight with three, control with three as well.
You know, three points each of those young ladies contribute.
You were right there in the last moments of the at the half.
What a takeaway by Elise Whitney right there who lays it up.
And in Alex Whitney with her first field goal of the day right there.
And Leslie, quickly on the board here in this third quarter, you know, Curtis, it seems like every year, as John talked about there at halftime with the principal from Dane County, it seems like there's always one school that has to travel from the center of the state here to make it.
And this year, that story is Dade County up here in Trenton, Georgia, in the northwest corner of the state.
And they've made a long trip down here today with hopes of bringing home a state title.
Yeah, that's the beauty of the talent in the state.
It's all over Wesleyan, meanwhile, out of Norcross, out of Region eight and Gwinnett County back on the other end, quickly down the floor.
That's boy and a double dribble right there.
You know moist sat a lot of that first half with those fouls.
And that might be a big reason why we haven't seen the lady Wolves able to pull away, not to take anything else away from the the other players.
But, boy, certainly a big part of what they do.
Yeah, she was the anchor of that team.
And thankfully for them though, lately the sun came in and really ably filled in for Jesse Garland.
The three turnovers to start the half, not the way coach throw it up and in the locker room lockers with the basketball throws a tough left hander right there follows her own shot but taken away by how to hit 431 in that Elite eight went over to see all of the Lady Wolverines overtime points as well.
It seems like when the game's on the line, she puts the team on her shoulders.
Wow.
Wow.
Jamie Moreland.
And that's going to be another foul right there on.
Boy, that's going to be her third foul right there.
Yeah, well, we thought she picked up her third in the first half there, but that's just number three right there.
But still early on here, she's going to have to come out.
Wow.
Again, with those seven points at halftime.
Here's a three point shot by Garland off the mark kept alive though by also Brook underneath the possession.
We'll go back to the lady wolves and the date crowd not liking that one.
At least they got a shot of this.
When you turn it over, you don't even give you a chance yourself, a chance to score and to see it right there, right on that line there.
Boys scored the first four points of the game, but has not scored since with 30 while on the other end.
Tough turn around out there.
Too strong and Moreland comes out of there with it when Wolverines get it across here trailing 2317 in the third going to have the fun I'm sorry Ashley House is going to have to find her offensive game now it's again averaging 23 trying to work the baseline right here kicks it back out.
Good look right there.
Shot off the back of the iron there.
No good by gallon.
Lot of wolves nearly lost the handle on that one there to get it across That's Rutgers or Lucas is certainly step right in where her graduated sister left off last year for this Lady Hawks program.
There has certainly meant a lot to the lineup here, a deadly backcourt when you talk about the Whitney twins and Laura and what she's been able to bring and you throw more in there, you throw Erica Smith at some of those girls in there.
You see boys sitting on the bench right now.
And if you're Dade County, that's where you want to see her.
Well, these girls are with you have played a lot together over the years, and they're very comfortable with each other.
They know where they like the ball, really don't like it.
And that really shows in how they share the basketball in always or many times.
You end up with open shots.
Your serve missing on the first try hit go to figures right here.
This is off the back down their team really hitting the free throws The ball is a hard foul girls hitting the deck right there.
The foul is going to be on Dade County.
Oh, yes.
It's going to be on going first team foul.
They're actually going to be on Sara Delany from Wesleyan, Ashley House up top being guarded tightly.
They're trying to get it away.
But Carolyn Whitney was right there anticipating the pass knocked away and last touched by the Lady Wolverines.
Oh, player substitutions right here, Rachel Reed back in Brittany.
Also, Brooke, picking up foul number four.
It looks like as well.
And that's big right there.
That's the big girl inside that we were talking about having an effect in this game and a made bucket right there by the Lady Wolves.
So 25 to 17 under 5 minutes left here in the third Wesleyan trying to pull away here.
They don't go away, though.
Shot too far underneath here by Moore.
You got those two threes at the end of the half with have energized Dade County but the Wolverines out here struggling haven't scored this half Sarah Delk thought about the three point shot first back up top with it now back over to Delta.
He's just a sophomore got some size shoots it inside there.
What a look right there in the turnaround Saric Well the beauty of that play with the catch it is a difficult pass going against where her momentum was carrying it but she caught it gather herself and then was talented enough to make the shot pay for time timeout going to be called by coach Jean Durden and the Dade County Lady Wolverines here trailing by 1027 to 17 and Wesley out of the locker room.
The Lady Wolverines unable to score so far in the half here in the first 4 minutes.
You know, I've talked a lot about how as the House has struggled with the shot, but, you know, the credit goes to the defense of Wesley.
Those guys are sharing the load and they're staying in front of her.
They're contesting every shot and they're making it difficult for her to see the crowd.
The house here today, of course, Macon, Georgia, has been referred to as the song and soul of the South today, playing host to this double a girls basketball championship and certainly excited about it with a good crowd here today.
Well, this champion ship game can also be viewed live on the GPB Internet site around the world on the World wide web w w w dot gpb dot org.
Just follow the links to connect to the game.
Every game will also be archived and available later on the GPB website as well.
Again, that's WW dot gpb dot org and always fun to do fun to watch back as well.
A few months down the road.
A lot of these teams right here that are here today obviously can't watch themselves but they catch up with it a little bit later on there and see a replay.
I'm sure VCRs are rolling all around the state as well.
How tends to get on track here and a blocking foul going to be called on Sarah Moyes and that's going to be four on her.
So all of a sudden the two bigger girls on either side there again, Britney, also Brooke, of Dade County and now Sarah Moyer of Wesleyan, picking up for it.
She will have to sit and probably sit a while.
And so a chance right here for Dade County to possibly make a little bit of a run.
As you see the frustration on her face for fouls on ball.
That's a nice shot right there.
Big shot by the lady Wolverines get it back to an eight point game here low scoring affair Neither team looking like we're going to hit their average on the season but it doesn't really matter there's a take away by house one on on the other end lays it up and in and the foul Ashley House with their first points of the second half but it couldn't have come at a bigger time a chance for a three point play that's just sheer athleticism.
First on the defensive end, she beat the ball handler to the spy, stole the ball, came in, took the contact, stayed with the shot and converted outs, trying to complete the three point play as you see her numbers nine points and four rebounds here and make it ten points for Ashley Houser's starting to pick it up here a little bit.
We'll talk about kind of a slow first half of it maybe for her, not for anybody else, but she can quietly come away with 30 points and you don't even know it.
Maybe that's just maybe that's the play right there.
They you've got to get her going here.
Turnover now on the floor and the lady Wolverines out of there with it.
A chance to cut it down to a one possession game possibly shot by house is off the mark there and Lucas brings it down on the other end and so the lady wolves just trying to calm down right here and get their offense rolling again.
I like the pull up by NC right there though she's posted a lot to the basket on those opportunities BUZZER with a good idea inside there but downcourt ready for the pass and that's going to force a 32nd timeout by coach Jan Azar and the Wesleyan Lady Wolves who still lead at five five here with 257 left in this third period.
But first I'm going to tell you what, it's been a game that's gone back and forth and the Lady wolves right back in the thick of things, they've tightened it back up here.
It's been as close as it has been since the beginning of the game.
Yeah, I think there's a significant shift in momentum right now.
But again, they kind of has to be consistent offensively.
And she still hasn't made two consecutive shots in this game.
She just missed after the three point play missing open three right there on the break.
So hopefully for their sake, she will find her rhythm, which has been eluding her all day.
And you see lately the serve right there had a big first half.
They may need her to step up again here, especially with more on the bench.
Well, they're certainly going to go to her.
Clearly, their game plan is to go inside out and inside needs to.
Her turnover picture is evened up here, Dave, with 11, but Wesleyan now with ten, both teams in double figures as far as turnovers and that shot was partially blocked.
Duke stepped out, a big, big player stepping out on a little good play and got her hand up and influenced the shot.
Allison had a second early and taken right back by Whitney.
Back up top Luckhurst for three off the mark.
No good.
Caroline Whitney keeps it alive.
It throws up another tough shot.
It wouldn't go and the rebound comes down to Garland and then out of bounds in right back the other way and a player on the floor there for Wesley and as you see Garland obviously banged up trainer's taking a look right James will head on over to the bench there and quite a shot as we take another look at that whole sequence.
Oh, wow.
Now, Alex Whitney, that's the second time she those elbows have come out and she hits that one in the face, stayed up and now is on the floor there as the trainers look and it looks like she will make it back to her feet, though.
That's certainly good news right there for the lady wolves.
One sister took an elbow to the face.
The other sister think she hit it the back of her head on the floor.
Wesleyan scored the first six points of this third quarter of a day to scored the last five to in this thing.
Back up here a little bit.
Pinch points have certainly been a key.
Wesleyan had 11 at the break of course nine coming from the survey Conti with the six they have managed to work their way back into this thing Dell looking inside the sur in the lane got it back here and a chance right there good job by lesser a tough basket inside that had to be a foul a hell ball or whatever it looked like it was knocked away There you go Wesleyan rather they county crowd one Mayo whistle there but didn't get it A what a move there and then walked away by Rosser as trying to make a move in there take it away and a whistle and a foul going to be called on house with the foul out of frustration, she is continually driven deep into the teeth of the defense, but is network to her advantage because she has it converted much in the taller player.
The blocking of shots fortune They talk a lot about defense and this is a Wesleyan team that's only given up gave up 40 in the first round, 40 of the second round, only 27 to the number one team wholly innocence avenging that 2003 quarterfinal loss.
What a job there.
And then of course, almost doubled up Dublin in the semifinal match up and another whistle inside there going to be another foul.
This one going to be, it looks like 22 on Rachel Reed, and that's going to be for fouls on Rachel Reed.
So all of a sudden, a pair of Lady Wolverines in foul trouble off the inbound.
Dell puts up the shot.
It won't go.
Whitney keeps it alive, though, high off the glass.
It won't go fall loose on the floor, jump off ball and possession.
Arrow will stay with the lady wolves and Curtis things getting physical.
Yeah.
What you see in Dade County now is the urgency of the moment.
They're playing a lot harder, a lot scrappier than they had in the first half, where it seemed Wesleyan got every loose ball and every rebound on the offense on their officer.
The state title on the line here.
Caroline Jimmy puts up a shot Go now what?
We're going to have another whistle right here.
Looks like they are going to call out Laura Conforto for her second.
Carla Whitney is a tough little player, but she'll stick their head in there.
She missed the shot, but effort and energy and desire to go back in there to get the rebound and in the end up during the foul and 22 left here in the third period last shot off the iron over it and back the other way to Dade County.
As you see lately, Missouri, who has been one of the more active players in the ball game here tonight on either team 11 points here leads all scorers Ashley House in double figures with ten as you see the field goal percentage not very impressive 23% for Dade County, just 31 for Wesley but still a close game and that's all that matters.
Yet they seem to get close and then a couple of turnovers here missed out there and we're seeing conversion again.
They have a relatively comfortable cushion for substitutions.
Wesleyan reiterating, Allison what junior Rutgers do in their one minute left in the third on what a drive by lockers to take a hard foul on a whistle Rutgers hit the deck right there and she will go to the line.
It is getting physical holding her.
It's going to be three fouls on Jessie Gowan.
And you see it right there.
We have really seen the intensity pick up here, as expected between these two who really pride themselves on defense.
As we talk about up top, I love the fundamental play there about like is driving to her left defense on her right using her left hand to get the shot up, enjoy the foul as opposed to shoot with the right hand.
She made it easy for the defender to block the shot.
One of two on that trip right there.
Kelly Hall, number five right there and your screen back of the lineup as Luckhurst takes a seat after that, maybe free throw.
So 30, 22 in an eight point game inside a minute here in quarter number three rocking and rolling right here from the Macon Coliseum Double-A girls state championship on the line, Dade County trying to win their first Wesleyan, trying to win their third of the last four years.
And it's anybody's game right now counts two strong off the glass shot just hasn't fallen here much Caroline Witney as active as she's been he's been held scoreless today as well She's taken some shots but.
Adrienne hasn't been too friendly.
I think they're focusing so much on defending her house that maybe it's impacting her often.
Well, knocked away and a turnover right there.
Of course, he averaged six deals.
A game counts on the other end trying to go behind the back working on it.
He picked up a tough shot hits.
Wow.
And that's the Ashley hats we've seen all year long.
Shot at the buzzer or off the mark and that'll do it for a period.
Number three, but just a six point game here at the Coliseum as house hits one right before the end, 3024 Wesleyan up by six.
As we get set for the fourth and final quarter of play.
When we return, I wish that I could back to the sky.
It's very high, just like a dragonfly, a bird, The Wesleyan Lady Wolves from Norcross, Georgia, trying to make it three titles in four years.
They lead it by 630, 24 as we start the fourth quarter.
Dave Garner, Curtis Bunn with you.
John Nelson courtside as we get set to rock and roll here in this final quarter and Curtis County tell you what they're fortunate to be this time the game, they've still got a shot.
Yeah, they certainly do, especially with the lady with the ball on the team.
She keeps it relentless score as you saw right there.
Ashley, how to sue.
We're talking about 14 points here.
She started pick it up and it's just a four point game back.
Another other three point shot off the mark by what and already wolverines off and running it Nice bounce pass right there but too hot to handle for Jessie Gowan who is underneath there this the ill advised play there time she had a small opening to get that ball in there it was a big girl she was trying to get to running away running toward the basket.
It was not even if she had caught the ball, she may not have been in control.
Leading scorers for Wesleyan with Sir with 11 more and lockers with just four piece.
Morris tip a good bit of the game on the bench and there's a takeaway there by house one on one on the other end lays it up in it and the foul it's over two point game unbelievable As spectacular as she is offensively her defense and her ability to take the ball is huge.
It's not a steals today and finishes on the other end right here does Ashley house and we talked about it in that overtime game against GSC 16 points five rebounds here today at 31 though in that overtime game scored all eight points in overtime and when the game is on the line, she tends to put her teammates on her shoulders.
Absolutely.
And she has the ability to do it.
The teammates, her teammates look for her to do it and she accept that responsibility.
It's a one point game on the other end.
Well, you got LSU right there with another bucket.
How big is Lilly been today off the bench for Coach Jan Hayes?
Are those Wesley Lady wolves?
Yeah, that was a great penetrating move by Calhoun, Whitney and a great pass as well.
Three point shot off the start of the iron.
No good kept alive though the surge with 13 points and hearts will take it back up top chance right here for day two, possibly tied up.
The shot is up and it's not going to count.
It is going to count.
Another chance for a three point play by Ashley House.
And Dade County is a free throw away from tying this thing up.
The hesitation for with the left hand body control getting the contact and concentration to make the shot.
Beautiful work, unbelievable job here by Hatch who has come off looking for her 20th point on the night try to tie this thing up free throw is off the mark there so Wesleyan still up by one but this is quite a game now.
Is six and a half to go, half as everything is advertised and probably a little bit more.
Much better pass it I thought in great heart Caroline Whitney knocks down a three on the other end that Brittney's first points of the game and boy, they're huge in that we're going house she's so eager to steal the ball she left her man wide open with it wisely moved the ball to the open man and she made the to made the open three.
That's a little out of control right there though Lesser comes down with it and Wesley and on the other end there at least Whitney with the basketball and back up top Caroline Whitney being guarded by house and that's love first in the lane and a blocking foul going to be called it looks like on house house is going to need a hot bath perhaps inside after this one you play the entire game.
And she's been on the floor several times.
That's just how much she wants to win.
Know these two teams are really going at each other.
That's going to be the second odd house, 3531, a four point game.
They've had a lot of great games this weekend right here on GPB.
I'll tell you what, I put this one right there with it.
The shooting hasn't the shooting percentages haven't been that great, but it's a close game.
It's exciting and both teams are really starting to pick it up.
We're feeling the pressure a little bit here.
Yeah, the competitive nature of the young ladies on both sides is evident.
First off, four points today, five rebounds and hits on the first.
She'll have another.
Oh, that makes it a five point game right here.
Rutgers misses on the second right there.
Antonio will watch it go out and will be they basketball at 553 left and trailing by five.
It's still just a two possession game right here with the Lady Wolverines.
Go on to let Wesley go on another run here.
Look for that.
Maybe to depress here a little bit, too.
You can pretty much discern who's going to be looking to take the shot.
So listen back on the other end.
And knocked away.
No whistle there.
BUZZER with good defense right in there.
Ouch.
Shot unable to hit the mark there.
And the lady wolves right back on the other end are trying to stretch that lead out your ass is just a force by house trying to do too much on that sequence at that at least Whitney over the lockers being guarded by Knight and inside really Elizabeth another bucket What a game for her 15 points She's averaging ten on the year the 511 is tearing it up and that was a product of moving without the ball.
The ball switched to the left side of the court.
She quickly the leader defender posted up strongly got a great entry pass, a full time out called by coach Jean Durden and the Lady Wolverines as Wesleyan starts to pull back ahead here a little bit, 38 to 31, a seven point game It's still 502 left.

That's prep sports.
Plus returning next week exclusively on GPB.
And what a job Jim's Pinocchio does with that show right.
Always a fan favorite.
Get a lot of comments around the state.
Covered high school sports on the air prep sports plus program has a new Wesleyan on a60 run right here.
The Lady Wolves grabbing some momentum back here after it looked like all the momentum was in Dade County's favor.
This is where their experience shows they can cut it to one Western did not panic, went right back down, scored on over three, and then scored three more points to get to seize control of the game again by the Wolverines.
But the basketball Take It Away by Caroline Whitney on the other end numbers against her.
She'll kick it back out to Luckhurst at least when he thought about it.
Alec Hurst drives, puts up the shot, rattles it home.
Laura Walker's with seven points on the day, the senior 7.6 on the year trying to go out of state champion here is pretty much senior night if you will for these seniors their final prep game.
Taylor Whitney has been huge, great defensively and has also made some great passes in the big three.
Ashley have a three point shot is off the mark ball rolling around in there plenty of over to keep it alive Gowan puts it home Jessie Gowan with four points on the day and it's back to a seven point game at 4033.
That's his pick from the standpoint the AC didn't have the score to back to the three.
What a look right there.
Mr.
Shot wouldn't go.
The ball still up in the air looking for that play outs comes out of there with it little move puts up a shot off the glass it wouldn't go and dealt with the rebound and now a whistle and it looks like a foul on Rachel Reed and I believe that's going to be five on her If it is indeed on Reed, it's hard to question Ashley's decision making on driving to the basket so much because she has converted some three, three point opportunities.
But that was a clear case for her to pull up for either a three pointer or a 1617 footer with it.
It would have been uncontested and that is going to be five fouls.
On Rachel Reed.
It looks like you will have to come out of the lineup here.
Senior will foul out with 352 left.
So her high school career officially coming to an end as a coach.
Fantasia looking on here, it's still a tight ball game with 352 left and that's 18 fouls and eight.
So lady wolves here at the line with Sarah Bell and the 32 hits on the front end of the one and one free throws are always big.
But now when you kind of throw it away, a game that critical one who dealt right there had a big game just a sophomore playing in the state championship with two big free throws right there by it makes it 42 to 33.
The Lady Wolves stretched it back out to a nine point game in ceremony.
Return to the game So now she's a big tandem inside with the serve You figured you're under 4 minutes now and you don't want them in the game with her sitting on the bench so you might as well try to get some work out of it here and see what happens.
It's also going to have a foul rights are going to be called on Luckhurst.
Right now we're shooting every foul the rest of the way.
Both teams in the bonus here, over 23,000 lockers and Jamie Moreland will go to the line here shooting the one and one that's out.
First one's away and it's their Moreland averaging four points on the season, 2.4 rebounds, five assists and a little over a steal a game as well Good numbers there about the senior and this is on the second and a third with the rebound and now they kind of get to pick up the defensive pressure here a little bit for Wesley to bring the ball to for his third steal by how oh imagine that and can have a blocking foul right there his hands try to take that one of the whole house hit the deck pretty hard herself and she'll go to the line.
Oh, he anticipated the pass got there.
And again, she's going to force the action.
She's going to put pressure on the defense by attacking the basket.
Every opportunity that's going to be for fouls two on Luckhurst and a time out on the floor going to be called by Coach Azar and the Lady Wolves here to talk things over.
With 326 left in this ballgame, unbeliever bowl again, Dade County out of region six out of Trenton, Georgia, in the northwest corner of the state Wesleyan.
Lady Wolves out of region eight out of Norcross in Gwinnett County and.
These two have went at it this afternoon and put up quite a show near the team, as we mentioned, shoot the lights out of the ball.
Some low shooting percentages here this afternoon, but the game is on the line just when it counts.
Right here, you can pretty much race all that.
Yeah, a lot of grit and determination on both sides.
They count it to his credit has not fallen off it continue to boy head in finds itself right the game have to make the free throws here the house will be at the line again The lady wolves defeating model in round one who was ranked eighth Lady Jose in round two in the number one Holy Innocents was the big winner of course, double in the semifinals.
You see outs, numbers, 19 points.
Have one, but make it 20 points for Ashley House, who has certainly come alive here after just have a seven at the break has answered in a big way and has kind of put the team on her shoulders here in the second half to win on the way and it's their 21 points perhaps.
Here's the full court pressure that we expected early enough to kick ball right there 4236 with 321 left.
Coach Durden trying to keep his girls life here.
Coaches are looking on as the Lady Wolves got to a break, a little bit of press right here and a near turnover.
Whitney gets it across and Whitney feeds it over to two blockers to now it looks like Wesley going to try to run some time off that clock here.
Perhaps solid back court, solid starting five all the way around.
Good bench players and Lady Wolves have pretty much done it all.
And when you look at their last five years, how impressive in 2000, one state runner up oh two.
They were the champs in oh three the elite eight last year the champs.
And this year well, it still got a little under 3 minutes to figure it out.
They're in control of the game and this is more of a spread offense as opposed to a stop start tactics.
I think that the opportunity there to score they will take it Lady wolverines little fighting in their what's it going to be called right there on Laura continue at number 54 that will put luckhurst back at the line here both coaches look at on here and as this game wears on and gets late, both coaches start to get a little more animated, pacing the sideline over there.
Yeah, the outcome is the balance right now and you get the feeling if three girls are going to really matter both things in the moment.
But first, with eight points hits on the front end and you know, Curtis, that's pretty much it right now as Lynn hits those free throws, they're in good shape.
Yeah.
Look, they kind of could force a turnover after scores.
Then they're going to be forced to tell and we can't afford to give up.
Another threw down on a michigan.
How big was that right there Looser underneath with a big rebound has been huge offensively today with 15 points that might be one of the bigger plays she's had right there, though all day she's been significant in any way, shape or form.
Her presence inside, defensively, moving without the ball, freeing herself up for open opportunities where her teammates have found her and she's converted.
She missed some free throws.
Otherwise she's been pretty flawless.
Ashton Vaughn, number three senior checks in for Dade County for the first time today.
Ball still loose and would have lined up.
At least Whitney kept it alive right there.
And it looks like they're going to get more than just the body curler.
Whitney Sutter was so poised she lost control on the floor, did not panic, didn't call a timeout, got the ball to an open teammate, preserved the timeout in possession.
And that's shot and that's going to be ten team fouls.
Did you see the free throw story?
Nine of 13 Wesleyan nine of 19 from the line here today and make it to nine of 20 all east Whitney at the line here but shooting two again in the double bonus as you see with these numbers today three points and ten rebounds and misses off the front of the iron right there.
So a good foul, it turns out, by the Lady Wolverines back there in half.
A little wild right there.
Whitney brings it out.
And another whistle That was one house more easy opportunities today uncontested layup I think she was caught in between using the left hand and ended up going to the right here missed barely made it Moreland for another foul her third and back of the line here she gets third it's Carolina let me look at where she lives up on her feet is not in the sitting in the foul line but over to the right in is Caroline and Elise the twin combo.
There you see Caroline's numbers today, six points, six rebounds, sets, one on the way.
This is one of three on the last two trips there with two out of three mystery throws it.
They did not get the rebound They can wide open underneath for at least but it wouldn't go and that's it on Sarah and that is going to be five it looks like on Sarah Moy who will come out of the lineup here at Foul Out Just four points, Sonny boy averaging a little over 11 a game and ten rebounds and hasn't really played a whole lot in this game and again scored the first four points of the game and didn't go the rest of the way and visibly upset with her picking up their fifth foul, as you can see there, and got to credit Dade County for being able to hold her to four points.
But at the same time, Wesleyan has got such great efforts from Lesser and some other girls that they've been able to maintain a lead here.
Absolutely.
We will foul out of game with those four points, four rebounds.
And you see also Brook Anthony line for Dade County playing with four fouls herself.
Take it that fourth foul early on there but missed on front in there the one and one so lady Wolverines come up empty here inside 2 minutes to play as we mentioned earlier she throws free throws free throws, can't put a value on the invaluable the push right there at midcourt.
And once again Caroline Whitney will go back to the line.
It's going to be four fouls on Laura Condor.
No, as you see the bench and more to come out then a senior did not want to fall foul out of her final prep game there and a time out on the floor here.
Coach did want to talk things over again the number three date county Lady Wolverines taking on the number two Wesleyan Lady Wolves and what a season it's been for both programs And Curtis I know you appreciate the the print media there and everything and both these schools have a have have quite a website but we're seeing a lot more a good team page is of course Wesleyan of Wesleyan Lady Wolves dot com Dade County sports icon their respective websites there.
And I'll tell you what a lot of times those websites can be helpful when you're trying to study up for some of these games here.
And I know Wesleyan is really impressive.
All the stats, the history, they're the all time leaders and certainly fun to log on to all these teams website.
You know, it just speaks to the popularity of the girls game in this state.
There's so much talent spread out.
We talked earlier about Dade County coming from nearly 6 to 12 weeks to get northwest Georgia to make it here, to make it to the championship game.
It's just talent, abundance and abundance of talent all over the state in the inches continues to grow.
I'm glad I have a 13 year old daughter who's going to high school next year, a basketball player.
It warms my heart to see these young ladies out here competing the way they do.
Time outs remaining, Dade County with just one, Wesleyan still with three.
As you see Caroline Whitney back at the line here, hits that one right there, one of two on her last trip, Caroline.
And trying to make it two of two right here and make it a ten point game and does so Whitney with six points here today 4636 under 2 minutes.
It's crunch time for the lady.
Three point shot from the corner, no good, but kept alive right back in the hands of Ashley House, who will put up a three point shot, bounces off the rim and dealt with the rebound Whitney brings out of there in the clock, down under a minute and a half lady wolverines get it across is so poise so composed so much experience They know how to spread the floor, move the ball a lot.
First with the basketball on top Lady wolves start to feel it here playing Keep away right now running the clock.
And the Wesleyan fans are on their feet.
Clock down to a minute here inside the Macon Coliseum.
The Devil Worry Girl State championship.
This is just textbook execution.
Don't wait to get fouled.
Get rid of the ball.
Good job right here.
Running that clock and the seconds are ticking down and a hard foul going to be called on Jesse Gowan and pretty much a desperation foul right there.
Dade County had to find a way to stop the clock.
Yeah, I think they just got frustrated of this superb execution.
Complete unselfishness.
You see, so many times players want to hold the ball so they can get fouled and go to the free throw line.
Not here.
They understand the value of moving the ball.
The clock is they're allowed to keep that clock when at least Whitney at the line now hits on the first.
And Brittney also Brooke will check in for date County, as you see in these numbers here today, four points and a pair of rebounds rattles home the second as well.
Two for two.
They're 4836 and the lady wolves are starting to feel it here.
Kind of still alive but a big block from behind right there by Lilly.
Listen.
What a game for that young lady.
She's been unbelievable.
It's been picture perfect for her.
Transferred over for reading, coming in in the championship game and having a major impact 511 junior will be back next year Shot off the mark by hearts right there.
Well sir takes it out of there with 30 seconds left the clock as the seconds tick down there and a turnover right there, no whistle ball loose on the fourth jump ball call.
I tell you what, Curtis, you got to like to see that here late in the Game Lady Wolves.
Try to pull this thing out here.
But Dade County is still fight and we've seen bodies all over the floor here tonight.
Certainly not a lack of effort on either team, but you can't teach that kind of passion and determination.
Those young ladies want to win, even though they see now that it's out of reach with 23 seconds left down by 12, they continue to play hard.
Little luckhurst day is over with the senior playing her final prep game with her bucket wouldn't go there trying to follow it up.
Take It Away by Ashley House.
Take your hats off to this Dade County Lady Wolverine program.
Number three in the state table here at 28 and three overall.
And what a season it's been as the clock stops with 6 seconds left.
But the Wesleyan Lady Wolves are going to make it three in the last four years.
What a program are they?
A dynasty?
I mean, I guess we can call it that.
I mean, at eight years, this program has been around a young history, and they're also going to have three state championships.
Just a remarkable job by coach Dan Azar and everyone with this program.
Absolutely.
You look at their roster, there's a lot of young talent coming back next year, so expect them to be formidable once again.
And speaking of younger players, we're going to see a few right here for the Lady Wolves.
Michelle Pope 511 Sophomore and number 55 to the lineup, along with Katie Stutzman, number 15 also Sarah McRoberts.
Number three, Kelly Hall back in there in the third will stay in as also Brooke knocks down the free throw there.
Final seconds will tick off the clock and out of bounds there another turnover so Dade County with one more shot before this things in the books only two seniors for Wesleyan.
Yeah unbelievable they've gotten it done with youth to think that this team's going to be back they're going to be around for years to come.
Absolutely.
They have built the program there that will be a threat.
Always got off the mark of the boys and that was it.
The celebration, isn't it midcourt Is the Wesleyan lady Wolves from Norcross, Georgia, Hatcher, their third state title in the last four years.
They are your 2005 class.
The state champions.
What a job by Coach Dan Hayes arm and the assistant coaches First Coach Azar has been there for eight years since the program started in 97 and a dynasty in the making, if you will, right here as the lady Wolves add another championship state champs here in 2005.
The defending state champs make it two in a row and an unbelievable effort.
Take your hats off to the Dade County Lady Wolverines who came in here and never let this thing get out of hand.
Wesleyan couldn't quite put put them away.
The Lady Wolverines kept fighting.
Just an unbelievable, unbelievable game.
John Nelson standing by with a winning coach here, here with Jana Azar.
And this seems to be old hat but not old hat when you come here to Macon.
Yeah, we're enjoying it.
We hope we can keep on doing it.
Let's see, how does it feel to get this one under your belt being as top of the ladder as you were most of the year?
It feels great.
We've never had back to back, so we're going to enjoy this.
Back to back.
And, you know, I can't say enough about how Dave County Farm that won.
They did a great job and and we enjoyed the game.
Janice, our congratulations.
Thanks for your time.
Two out of three.
Three out of four.
It seems like as we come here to making it's Jan winning championships it's old hat.
Let's turn it back over to David Curtis.
Well, as you said, John, it never gets to be old hat there.
And indeed they are.
Wesley and Lady Wolves with plenty to celebrate about here today.
They are the Double-A state champs that's going to wrap things up for the contest boys coming up for our tire.
True.
And for Curtis.
But I'm Dave Gardner saying So long, everybody.
