Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipDay two of the Georgia High School Association State semifinals begins with Class two AA.
It's the undefeated of Buford Wolfe's 13 year old taking on the Dublin Fighting Irish 11 and two.
This begins a full day of high school football right here on Georgia Public Broadcasting at this morning.
GREENE Is the color of the morning and top of the morning to you.
John Wilkerson, along with Bo Bok and Bo.
What we have this morning is two traditional powers and class to it.
Yeah, John, we're in for a doozy.
And you've all heard of breakfast of Champions and Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Well, if you're at home, pour yourself a cup of coffee quiz.
We're in for another pigskin breakfast from the Georgia Dome, compliments of GPB.
This figures to be a donnybrook, because when you talk to Jess Simpson of Buford and Roger Holmes of Dublin, both coaches have exactly the same thing to say about the other guy's team and that is both are huge up front on both sides of the ball.
So this is going to be one kind of slop in Naka.
Let's take a look at some of the players for Buford number five.
Tailback and defensive back Demetrius Murray.
He's 510 2089 yards a carry in 19 yards a catch but he's a leading defensive player and he's committed to south Florida.
Number 58 is Omar Hunter.
Look at the sides of him.
311, he's six one.
He bench presses for ten.
He plays on the offensive and defensive line and today plays against the Fighting Irish of Dublin, Georgia.
And I say that because he's committed to Notre Dame.
And I'm sure he'll be become Big Omar's name throughout today.
Now, just it just Simpson is in his third year as head coach of Buford.
He gives you the lowdown on the wolves, what you'll see this morning.
Offensively, you'll see a multiple offense.
A lot of motions in shifts have a senior team were led by a bunch of big guys up front who really come off the ball.
Got a senior tailback and quarterback and a couple of senior receivers.
Defensively, we're a43 multiple out of that package.
Do a lot of different things in the secondary, but senior on that side of the ball as well.
A lot of a lot of kids that have played three years on that side of the ball.
Well, now let's tell you about the other team in Green, the Dublin Fighting Irish.
And they have a quarterback, Rashad, who's very special.
Yeah, not only special, he's one of the leading playmakers you're going to see today.
He's with Sean Smith.
He's number nine.
He's a junior quarterback.
He ran for 800 yards, passed for over 700.
He also returns punts and goes for a high average and leads all DB's on their squad with nine interceptions on the other side of the ball, number one running back.
And Drake is Rollins.
He's 510 185 averages over seven yards a carry at 23 yards and catch on defense.
That's 103 tackles and three sacks.
That middle linebacker, we're in for a doozy.
You're in for a doozy.
Yeah.
Well, let's hear from Dublin's head coach.
He's a six year Roger Holmes.
Well, offensively for us at Dublin High School, we base our offense out of a wing t type attack.
It's a little bit different than some of the traditional wing teams.
We do try to run some midline option and some triple option out of it and and feel like that we, you know, we throw the football generally a little bit more than most wing teams will throw it probably 10 to 15 times and hopefully have some success doing that.
So it's sort of a mixture of a West Coast, Georgia southern type spread and Delaware winning T for us defensively, we base out of a43.
We will we will jump into a53 front every once in a while and mostly a zone coverage type football team.
It doesn't blitz a whole lot.
And now that you know the particulars of this game, now this introduce you to the third member of our crew.
Patrolling the sidelines today is David Sutton.
Good morning.
Davina.
Well, from the start, Dublin's football team was not even supposed to make it this far in the playoffs, and that's because this was supposed to be a rebuilding year for them.
Coach Rodgers told graduates 21 out of his 20.
Two starters, in addition to losing most of his coaching staff.
For various reasons and I've been on that part of the story a little later once the game starts.
But from Friday to Friday and week to week, the Fighting Irish literally had to fight for each of their wins.
And that's why coming into the game today, they are the w the sportswriters who cover them as being the underdogs.
And that's because they face Buford, a team who has truly been rolling over each of their opponent opponents all season long.
So Bo and John, we are already down here for that pigskin breakfast you've been talking about.
It's a green morning here at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
The Buford Wolves and the Dublin Fighting Irish getting ready to.
Mix it up here at the Georgia Dome for the bus to a semi final.
Go.
Here come the wolves, undefeated 13.
You know, have a little problem with that paper right off the bat there.
Buffalo fans, the Fighting Irish mean business.
This is a matchup up against two traditional powers and class to each program over the years have won four state championships and the winner today will move on to the state championship game in class.
To the athletic director of Buford is Dexter Wood.
He really got it going for the wolves.
And, you know, they've they've continued that dominance.
This really is going to be one heck of a game also for Buford.
For a long time, Falcons fans, the two best safeties you ever had on the club board were Pride Moore and Case Scott Case and Tommy Pride More.
Well, their sons play for Buford and you'll see them today.
Cody Case and TJ Pride more T.J.
Pride more, though he's about six two and 240.
If Tommy had that type of size, he would have killed people.
But doubling the defending to a state champion, they.
Tied with Charlton County last year and this year they like to.
Claim it for themselves.
There's Roger Holmes, the head coach of the Dublin Fighting Irish in the sixth year, won 64 games in six years with the Irish and the state championship.
He went to college in Middle Tennessee State.
Dublin will receive the kick off.
And really on the way from the Georgia Dome.
That's Rashad Smith, who slips at the 16 yard line.
And that's where Smith and the Dublin Fighting.
Irish take over.
Rashad Smith pretty much does everything for this team.
He's also plays defensive back.
You see him, you'll see him return kicks and punts.
He's also the starting quarterback then.
Pretty nice numbers there.
670 yards passing this year, 11 touchdowns.
He does it all for this team.
Very talented athlete, very tough, hard nosed kid and so on.
First down from the 16.
Into quarterback sneak and it goes nowhere.
That wall of Buford Wolves stops it for one gain.
Here's the Dublin offensive line of Trent Barnes.
Sean Holloman, Nick Macrae, Tommy Thomas Purvis and Johnny Howard Rollins and Reed.
Or you're running backs.
Coffey and Canada are your wideouts and Anthony Thomas the Junior is your tight end, one yard gain, second and nine.
And Lucas Rollins and Rollins will get about four yards.
Maybe three.
And that's it.
Josh Rudnick and Demetrius Murry on the stop.
And you take a look at the Buford defense of Tyler King, Dallas Ali, Omar Hunter and Andrew, six Pride More Anderson and Swanson.
This is a formidable front seven and a good good secondary Rudnick Murray case inviting.
Third down and six Smith the throw his first pass of the game and start his knock down T.J. pride boy there he is.
Beau Oh, his daddy's proud, as are all Buford fans.
And I'll tell you what, Dublin came out and said, okay, yeah, we'll play little cards with you and they'll just run the quarterback sneak sneak right at Omar Hunter.
But look at the look at Young Pride.
Moore there just ran over the offensive lineman trying to block him.
He found a way to get to the QB for the sack.
Wow 101 tackles on the year for Pride Moore is Michael Coffey through averages 30.4 yards a pop and this one he shakes.
It's a nice role though by Buford We'll start off at the Dublin 40 and.
You'll get your first look at the Dublin offense led by number ten to you.
Whoosh.
And this is a competitor according to his coach just Simpson great passing numbers over 1000 yards but this is a kid who wears his emotions on his sleeve.
He is the emotional leader of this offense.
He's also a tough competitor.
And the formation move in the back of the yard, you know, it's an end.
The round two, Tony gets in gets will have a first down upended.
By Johnny Reed.
It'll be a first down for the wolves.
But it's a great opening play for Buford.
Ousley, Omar Hunter, Drew Dasher, Andy Kellogg and JJ Miller, your offensive line king a the fullback with DeMarte with Murray Chase Harris and JT Swanson at tight end Kelly flag down and there you go participation.
Prior to the snap illegal substitution Coleman and huddle five yard penalty.
First down.
So what will be the key to the Buford offense here?
Bo Well, it's going to be, you know, you know, the power game.
And, you know, Coach Holmes told me he'd like to put 11 in the box.
But when you look outside, you see these giant receivers.
He can't do that on play.
Action whoosh.
Feeling real pressure fires complete to Cody case.
The senior who had 16 catches on the year about three yards short of the first down and this wolves offense is moving.
Post did a great job of just holding his water, being patient, getting wide, getting outside, finding his receiver.
Watch this great fake doesn't panic now goes outside does is not antsy finds his receiver uncovered it throws to him and that's Cody case.
There's a penalty flag down.
In eligible downfield only offense five yard penalty free play first down.
Well that's what happens when a passing play does take a long time to unfold.
You inevitably have somebody downfield.
So two straight penalties have backed up the Buford Wall.
That's still first down the first and 20.
The pitches that Cody gets, he gets within a couple of yards.
Johnny Reed there on the tackle for the Irish.
The same play that Buford opened the game with and went for big yardage Sean.
Holliman, Nick McRae, Gerald Rollins and Johnny Howard, followed by Johnny Reed.
And Drake is Rollins and Anthony Thomas.
The Front seven, Colbert, Rashard Smith, Keyshawn Spikes and Michael Coffey are your defensive backfield.
Rashard Smith lead has six interceptions their lead the team.
Hosch is a great ball handler You saw that misdirection on that last play we've seen him fake the ball we've seen him go up in opposite directions.
He really is precise.
First in wideouts.
Who's looking to throw?
You can throw it.
Harris The play to Demetrius Murray and Murray will have a first down.
Nice job.
Pick the right receiver.
Watch you liable to see a receiver go deep and it gets deep here but hush doesn't worry about that takes the wide open receiver and delivers the ball first.
Look at Murray.
He has nine catches for one.
Hundred 71 yards, has three touchdowns receiving this year.
I was shocked to see his look on the full screen.
Looking toward the end zone stays brought down good defensive play by the BUF by the fighting Irish number 73 to roll.
In for Sean Holliman.
Finish him off.
Great pursuit you see this he's got actually Cody case open all the way back on the right side.
But he'd have to reverse this field to be able to get the ball to him.
But we talked about this in the open.
This is the type of game it's going to be.
Both these teams are big and fast and they really get after it.
He's a football players.
Alex Campos and punter position but we have a timeout called by the wolves.
Good field position for.
Buford, but the Fighting Irish defense stiffens defense it'll come.
To play.
Yeah, they really have.
As you know both teams can run and the great size up front and this is what the coaches were talking about when they talked about and set up each other.
They talked about this looks like our team, you know, like I said, Coach Holmes.
And I'd love to put 11 in the box against these guys because they also have the £250 fullback because he said every coach exaggerates a little bit, just a little, he said.
But I can't because the receivers are so good.
I talked to a coach on this morning.
He said, you know, a key for guys is make you feel a one dimensional on offense.
Well, now they're going to go for it on fourth down and 12.
That's how they feel about their defense going.
Whoosh, safety blitz hits it away.
Complete.
Cody gets with a sliding catch and has the first down.
And I think he's gotten just the right spot.
He knew exactly where the sticks were.
He saw Cody gets who had 17 catches on the year averages 14 two yards per catch there just take a look at this.
The numbers, two touchdowns, a great safety valve for two huge first and ten.
Moen back is Demetrius Murray will get the call Murray the big hole one man to be falling.
Over to short of the goal.
Line Demetrius Murray Oh my what a running back he is.
No, he looks like he goes about 230 with the power he ran with, but he's a 510 to a weight kid but he watch him run over people.
There's one there, there's two.
Well, didn't win over him, but he was able to bring them down but picked up another three yards after contact.
That was Michael Coffey was the last line of defense for the Fighting.
Irish first and goal from a one again Thomas and he's in for the touchdown and Buford scores on the first possession of the game He earned it.
That's behind.
That big offensive line.
Murray has 19 touchdowns on the year.
This makes it 20.
Plus power football and they get the.
Big boys.
Inside You can do that.
Lawson McGaughey It's seven to nothing.
BUFORD Buford made it look easy in their first possession.
And you take a look at Dublin head coach Roger Holmes, who that was probably his worst nightmare right there, giving up that score.
On Buford Boy.
I think that fourth down conversion was really disappointing to him.
Chad Smith in the end zone come out to the 20.
Really special kickoffs too.
I mean, the first one was perfect, came down the two with some hangtime that one just missed.
It was just inside.
The goal line of course, comes out to the 20.
But you know, it's tough to find that type of kicking game at the high school level.
Very tough.
Now, what would you say, the keys on the offense right now for Dublin?
Well, Dublin, you obviously are not going to panic.
You're down seven.
Nothing early in the game.
You've got to establish the line of scrimmage.
They run behind a big center.
The McCray kid number 76, he's committed to Georgia Tech.
He's a £310 center.
And give it to and Drake as Rollins.
And Rollins level loses the football.
And it'll stay with the Irish.
Tackle Cody Vining watch this breaks down and picture perfect tackle That was a textbook tackle head up boom Just drive to the man lift him and dump.
Him.
And Sean Holliman for an offensive lineman showed some good hands.
Anyway it's second and six trouble at the snap and Smith.
Trying to make something out of nothing he may have gotten the first down Demetrius Murray and Cody Vining it on the stop and he'll have a first down for the Irish.
That's why coach calls him one of the great playmakers he's ever had.
He makes something out of nothing offensively, defensively, he really makes it look at his composure, picks his spot, takes his shot, wriggles away.
Well, I'm impressed with the just flat out violence and hitting of this Buford team.
You take a look at Cody case on the end events.
Rollins and Rollins met by a host of rules led by Cody Vining.
Well, they run to the ball, don't they?
That was what was emphasized when pried more in case played for the Falcons.
That was the defensive philosophy.
Run to the ball.
You could just never let up for me position on the field and obviously those dads have handed it down in their son to pass it along to their teammates because they get after it.
Yeah.
Whenever whenever Dublin has the football, there's already nine white shirts right there to get him and Smith.
In trouble and brought down.
That's Landon Anderson.
And there were three wolves in his kitchen.
Now I'm almost sure it's going to be holding coming from that spot on the field.
And against that pass rush, no offside illegal motion.
We'll hear from Chip Hoffman.
Illegal shift on the offense.
Penalty has declined.
Third down.
Third and long.
Chip Hoffman is a referee from the Augusta Officials Association.
Jerry Saugus, Mark Turner and Pollard, Scott Green, Bobby Moye.
They'll be working the game today.
Hopefully you don't hit from Chip a whole lot today.
Third long Smith the throw a little shovel pass to Rollins and Rollins met by pride more we'll pick up about seven but.
They had to get to the 41 yard line for the first down.
They'll punt the ball.
So he'll leave Buttercup play to.
An oldie but goodie.
Michael Coffey will play.
Cody Gets Back Heat for the World.
Nice punt Yeah And Jets will take it.
Running at the 4045 It's the midfield and we'll be in fighting.
Irish territory.
Nice return by Cody.
Yet the fans and Buford have made the trip down 85.
The short trip.
Eric says first time that the wolves have been to the Georgia Dome since 2004.
Well, they had a good run for a long while.
They had a run this year with a shutout.
Three opponents in a row looked like they were really on a roll.
But this is this is a heck of a football program that takes two would put together.
This just Simpson was on.
That staff for Coach Wooden.
Now he's the head man.
He's some play action, little bootleg action and some complete content for Cody case.
Too posh really upset with himself for not putting that ball right on the money.
First time he's hurry the throw leaving a little bit he's usually so composed and set up and steps into the thrown through that went a little bit off balance.
He's a kid that wears his emotions on his sleeve.
And, you know, Coach Simpson told me the other day he's really a tough competitor.
For 2500 yards, passing a nice career in the uniform.
And let's move now.
It's Alex Hunt.
The senior running back who will get about six, seven yards and bring up third down wide, just straight power football.
Bo is running up the middle and that offensive line is creating those opportunities for the running backs.
Well, that's what they talk about behind that.
Big fullback has a lot of things you can do to keep teams honest.
Third and four now is Alex Hunt again.
And Hunt, one of the first down.
Spread out the defense a little bit with the formation and then ran it up the gut did stack receivers to the left side.
Got to pay attention to them.
That spreads the linebackers out a little bit.
Then come back to that left side with that linebacker spread out.
So Alex Hunt gave some some significant playing time.
In the first quarter.
That's Murray and Demetrius Murray breaks a big 120 He's in the clear and gone touchdown was wow a.
Really big wow He was running.
Downhill He averaged almost nine yards and carry this year but he'll listed at 510 to a week.
When you see him on your TV screen, doesn't he look bigger than that and doesn't he look heavier than that?
That's a 36 yard touchdown run.
It looks like a six 1 to 25 kid to me.
But he's not.
Who you think Jim.
Leavitt's going to like him in South Florida?
Yeah.
You're like, awesome.
The gloom.
His second party of the day.
And in the first quarter, it's already 14 to nothing.
Buford, thanks to.
Demetrius Murray scoring both touchdowns.
Just right to two tacklers and then turns on the speed to run away from a DB.
That's a special running back.
When you're able to run over people and outrun people.
Demetrius Murray, a senior.
He had one.
Hundred and 25 yards rushing versus Darlington in the second round of the playoffs.
You take a look at the scoring drive, 92 yards and two touchdowns.
And Buford split victory over Charlton County in the quarterfinals, 53 yards already.
On the day for Demetrius Curry.
We have even played a quarter.
Yeah.
Besides Smith, what does it go out of bounds and then we'll kick it again.
Just want to talk about the kid gloves in the kicking game isn't always the way I think they were trying to squib that.
They obviously didn't want to be that close to the side.
Free kick infraction on the kicking team ball was in place to the 35 yard line first down.
Well Roger Holmes not in panic mode yet but 14 nothing down 14 nothing in the first quarter.
He can still get the job done.
Well, he's going to put it in the hands of his playmaker and that's his quarterback.
And they've got to make something happen.
We won't kick it again.
We'll take it at the.
35 to Once in Motion.
Smith's going to throw has no time to throw and brought down.
Clyde Moore was involved along with Dallas lead.
You know, Dublin really blocked it.
Well, it's unfortunate that they couldn't get it because nobody was open in the secondary, but it was blocked so well up front.
Look at that block right there to the left side of your screen.
Now he comes back, now he reverses, now he's open.
But there's nobody he's ready to throw.
But there's nobody open in the secondary.
Well, this view for defense, I've been reading raves about this.
Crew and for them and disappointed as we near the two minute mark in the first quarter and the short passes.
Over the head of his intended receiver Bryson Canada.
You're right John.
They look big league.
They look the way just the way they line up and the way they go about their business.
They look like a junior college, you know, a well coached junior college playing somewhere.
And there's some Division one talent on that defense volume.
And in fact, T.J., Brad Moore has committed to Georgia Tech.
Paul Johnson will be happy about that and met him last night at the at his press conference.
A very impressive man.
Third and 12 and a.
Penalty flag down.
Out of the snaps.
False start on the offense by guard penalty.
Third down that's all double of needs right now it's penalties.
You know, the Georgia Tech coaches are watching right now, watching their commitments.
And Paul Johnson said it for his first order of business this week is to talk to his commitments this weekend, get in touch with them.
So T.J. will be getting a call from ball coach Paul Johnson probably later today.
Probably won't have to change the color of his helmet either.
13, 17.
No time to throw it off for Rashard Smith.
And in his grasp was Tyler King.
Yeah.
No chance.
No chance whatsoever.
Five sacks on the year for King.
Rashad should have seen that his team could not block the left side, that nobody lined up and they were just going to come after him.
Michael Coffey For his.
Third punt on this block, they might have been touched now roll.
To the 47 yard line that that punt was deflected.
Deonte Carr flew in there.
You know watch him come very fast it's a very fast was he got a piece of it.
So Buford who scored on their first two possessions of the game as you see what they do in possession three.
Murray's in the back of the eye something special after he gets the ball in his hands Alex Hunt in the back of the eye, he crosses.
Midfield to the 48 yard line.
Let's head down to the sidelines.
Venus Sutton, what do you got?
Well, you know, Buford football team, you guys were alluding to, their defense was named number one by several recruiting sources and some scouting services in the state.
And they actually got a chance to play out of state up in Ohio.
They played the Kirk Street Classic and they played on turf and they beat a team from Columbus, Ohio, 34 to 7.
Wow.
That was a thrill of a lifetime for this team because they all.
They played in Canton, Ohio, at Fox Stadium.
They got to go to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Cody gets was well let's just say he was a little early.
Woo woo prior to snap encroachment on the offense five yard penalty second down he just wanted to play a little arena football.
Was.
Inside him inside.
Let's see what this feels like.
He can do that in Canada too.
Yeah.
Buford already over 100 yards.
And double in negative number.
So now on the Arsenal, on the morning Harris gets no it's sizzle curry with a big game to throw to the 35 yard line I'll tell you.
This Buford often we've talked about their defense his offense is clicking on all cylinders.
Yeah, watch this.
Just great instincts.
Good run.
He puts the ball on the outside arm, covers his up, covers it up.
When contact is approaching.
Well, well-coached team.
We've come to the end of the first quarter and it's been all wall.
They are howling at the Georgia Dome.
The Buford Wolves up by two touchdowns.
We start the second quarter and the star of the show is the number five.
Demetrius Murry.
Bo Yeah, Magic Man, Magic, because he plays bigger than the actual he is.
Look at him number five and he just looks so much bigger than he's listed 510 to away.
He looks bigger than that.
There he is with the power game.
Two touchdowns on the day.
This is his second year.
It is a big.
One day later on he goes outside, runs over people and then runs away from people and dives into the end zone.
He's really something.
So you see one power run.
Touchdown by player number five Demetrius Murry And we've seen one way he did that ran everybody he's committed to south Florida and he won't have to change his colors.
Buford With the football at the double and 35 to begin the second quarter, Murray is out there.
Melvin Harris and Cody Chase are your wideouts.
It's Murray with some moves.
Morris Just making it look easy.
Most of it, you know, that was one of those special moves that was there, you know, to be able to bounce outside like that without losing speed.
Watch this now.
Bounces sideways, boom.
It doesn't lose any speed.
That's a special gift.
That's a tough choice type of thing.
That's an Emmitt Smith type of thing.
Well, number five on his back, you've reminded me a lot of Darren McFadden first and ten.
And young here.
Jackson in motion and to give up the middle maybe a couple and that's it and again Tyler King on the carry the big fullback on there just it just Simpson's got to be loving life right now first appearance in the dome in three years and things are going well you know he.
Told me that Dublin is the.
Biggest team they ever played against.
Said they're huge up front.
That's Tyler King rumbling to a first down.
An old school fullback Jess Simpson calls them look at the scratches on his helmet.
Yeah, he's the big fullback.
He's the big thing that Roger Holmes was talking about.
Why people can get a lot of yards running behind him.
Six 140, 250 yards rushing this season and 15 touchdowns in timeout.
But his little brother plays for Walsh and will play tonight at 6:00.
So you know that Bobby is tuned in.
That's great.
And we hope.
It's a great service to all Georgia citizens.
Wherever you station, wherever you're traveling, to be able to get these games and get GPB.
We hope wherever you are, you're enjoying these high school football games.
We got five of them today, Murray, and this time he's back in the backfield and throwing for a loss.
Big Jesse Hall is there to bring him down.
Well, good time out, Coach Holmes.
Way to get you guys going and way to shore up the the interior of that defensive line.
There's a great play.
They needed that.
They needed something positive that happened.
Yeah.
Hall almost lost his hat this year like a senior.
Especially since you don't want a team to just cram it down your throat, go to make the stand.
And who's the throw cog?
That's Demetrius Murray and Murray.
And be close to the first down here to catch it off his shoestrings.
Again great composure Watch the pursuit from his backside.
He feels it just gets away makes a nice throw here.
Only the receiver can catch it.
A third down and four for the wolves.
We need to get to the floor for a first down.
You have to the big fullback.
And that's Tyler King running in the end zone for the touchdown eight yard run by Tyler key number 16 on the year and the old.
School fullback with the scratches on his helmet puts Buford up by three Touchdown.
Well, you have to feed the pachyderm bill make sure he's happy.
And when the pachyderm is happy life is good Folsom lagoon these two for two on Tuesday now make that three for three and it's 21 to nothing Buford as big Tyler.
240 Got a little speed on him for seven.
40 now.
This is just basic power football Bo back.
There it is right there.
And free guy to 40 be able to dove over like that reach for it It's good stuff.
No chance at all for Dublin.
So Buford is up 21 to nothing and he plays 52 yards about 4 minutes time.
And Tyler King, with his eight yard touchdown run.
Well, everything is going for you.
Fred's way.
Man.
Got to find a way to score.
Now, double got to pull some something out of your bag of tricks.
You know, look at the Dublin fans right below us, Bo, and they're just in shock now.
Well, you know, what's shocking is that when you go against a team like Buford and they put on such a show and they're so precise and so well coached, the way they execute, you know, you realize that we've really got a big time opponent here and, you know, that the prospects of coming back are very difficult.
Dublin will get the football at the 20.
Well, Dublin can't feel demoralized.
There's still plenty of time in this game.
We're just in the second quarter.
No, but it's human nature to be a little bit down.
You're down 21 nothing.
You feel a lot of time left in the second quarter.
That is the one thing you have going for.
You guys have got to find a way to climb back into this thing because there's enough time to get it done.
But you can stick to your game plan.
Is Johnny Reed on the carry?
You'll pick up four one.
That's a positive play right there.
And they can build on those positive plays and get back in this game.
We got a full day of football here at the Georgia Dome in the semifinals here on GPB right after.
This is the second semifinal between the Lovat Lions and Cook.
Then at 3:00, Caro and North Hall in the Triple A semifinals, the winner of that game will play Carver, Columbus and Walton, South Bend after 6:00 game and Dallas lead with a huge defensive play there.
Well, Dallas lead with the penetration took that away.
The play might have gone for some yards if he could have gotten this pitch away.
Grabbed them by the shirt.
Buttoned down.
Well, you know, it was smart to drill that football back in.
And bring up another third and long.
Dallas Lee, a junior 54 tackles on the year that was his third quarterback sack as a he's six 4 to 90 benches 340 bow.
Boys kids today.
Well misdirection will go for a couple of yards and that's it.
The old bench over 300 remind me of myself.
Johnny Reed on the carry, JT Swanson on the stop.
Find out.
I don't remember doing that when I was in high school.
No, there weren't many.
In fact, when I was in high school, weightlifting was almost a no no.
Toffee with the punt gets back deep and go out of bounds.
I played football at the University of Miami and we didn't have a weight program until my junior year, and that was when a health club opened up down the BLOCK and Dixie Highway, and they made arrangements for the football to come through.
Can you believe.
That?
I can't believe that was 1965.
All right.
So you did play with the facemask?
I did play with a facemask, but I never used it.
I didn't screw it.
I didn't I didn't like it.
It impaired my vision.
Another offensive possession for the wolves, and they scored on all three swingers in the shotgun and around the jets gets maybe gets back to the line of scrimmage that defense well by the Dublin fighting Irish.
Well you know well designed and well thought out by Dublin how to stop it.
Anthony Thomas was there to chase them down before jets could get in full gallop.
There's another positive play to build on.
And especially on this fighting Irish defense has been run over so far.
Before the king.
King he's gotten some positive carries.
This time he only gets three yards.
And now with Trent Barnes on the tackle, now we're seeing some life out of this fighting Irish defense.
Okay, third and long now Dublin.
Now is the time to come with a play.
And the Dublin.
Defense employing.
Their offense to make some noise.
And for the first time.
The green and gold of the fighting Irish standing up and applauding in unison.
Good for them.
Here we go.
See if they come with some blitz pressure.
Some type of pressure package, big league firing.
That defense thing, that 12th man who shot of the shotgun lets it go incomplete intended for Cody case and for fourth down will be coming up for the wolves and they'll kick.
That to play the Cody case could make that ball was just thrown too much inside and it was a rifle shot you see the hot post can really get a great arm.
So a good positive outcome for this fighting Irish defense.
Alex Campos, whose boomed a 60 yarder this year.
Rishard Smith back deep, almost blocked, and now the penalty flag will go down as Campos.
Was run into.
To bed.
By Johnny.
You know, great play and.
They'll be a personal foul.
And I'll give Buford a first down.
You just can't you watch this.
You can't get there and missed the football.
You cannot be that close.
And Mr. football, first of all, it came after the kick him instead of out in front of the kicker, we would have had a chance to block the ball.
Josh Donaldson.
Found roughing the kicker 15 yard.
Penalty automatic first down you had the play made.
It was a good call by coach pressure go after it block it and you get there and then he's able to get it away.
But he took a direct path and so the curl.
In round two, he's got to come out in front of him.
You got to leave your feet.
New life for the Wolves offense.
Bush and a brutal looking throw.
And it's intended for Tyrell King.
And he caught it.
Nice catch by the big fullback.
A first down for Buford.
That was Melvin Harris.
I'm sorry.
On the catch watch host here.
He's going to come out now square his feet.
That slows down the pursuit and is able to deliver the ball on the run.
King was right there.
I'm sorry, T.J., five more.
He was right there.
The two and seven look the same to me for some reason.
Melvin Harris, 671 80 runs a44 and a timeout called by Buford.
Welcome back to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
The GHC class double a semifinal on the Buford Wolves are up by three touchdowns over the Dublin Fighting Irish and Bo Dublin had this possession stop but a roughing the kick roughing the punch call gave the ball back.
To the wolves and tough, tough play.
Now the wolves are threatening the score for the fourth time.
Now, we talked about the quarterback with Sean Smith being a playmaker.
Someone else has got to step up and make a play now be a playmaker.
And whether it's blocking a punt or, you know, doing something special off the kicking game, someone's got to step up.
A key strip.
Interception, anything in the motion to give it to Alex Hunt?
And Hunt stood up.
Leans in, gets a couple of yards and that's about it.
Johnny Reed on the stop along with Johnny Howard for the Irish.
Dublin's coach Holmes was talking about, as we mentioned earlier, about loading up the box against the Buford running game.
But you go outside is the big time receivers and the big size and the receivers.
And Melvin Harris is the kid he was talking about.
Harris had six, seven fights.
Murray Murray cannot escape the grasp.
Of Johnny Howard.
Dublin all of a sudden playing stout against the run.
Howard, a senior 35, tackles 62 to 65 and grabbed Demetrius Murray by the leg and wouldn't let go.
That defense has played a lot in this first half for the Irish.
Well.
Another third down and four back there.
It's Murray and Murray gliding to a first down.
The Buford defense, the Dublin defense had him stopped right at the first down marker is able to lead a little bit, keep the feet moving and get a first down.
That's where the stop had to come.
That's what we're talking about.
A playmaker, somebody on defense making a play.
They've been good up inside.
Let's see, that tackle had to be made.
Slip you the.
Arms of a hard.
Drake.
Yes, Rollins with Murray again.
And Murray stood up at the line of scrimmage and that's about as far as he's going to go.
But two green shirts in there to get him to break us.
Rollins led the pack.
Devlin playing with a lot of heart.
They are all.
I'm impressed.
Tough, tough kids.
Well, they are the defending champion in class, too.
I shared it last year with Charlton County or tied with Charlton County for the state championship.
So there's pride on that team.
Regardless to King.
King will not be denied the big bulldozer scores again, thank goodness.
12 yards, Tyler King.
Oh, he's loving it.
I don't know how you can hide in an aircraft carrier, but watch him lurk.
Just lurk behind the pile right there.
And then drive, drive, drive.
There's the score.
Talk about hard.
Look at those goal posts.
I'll tell you why.
What you look at the goal post.
Four for four on extra for Lawson McLaughlin.
Who was somebody out here on Wednesday with a roller painting it the Day-Glo neon orange green.
And evidently that's the high school collar high school goal.
Have to be that color now.
He'll be back tomorrow on Sunday to repaint them white for the Falcons Monday night game against the Saints.
Hey it's good work you being in it.
The goal post painter.
Yeah.
Now, will it dry in time for the Falcons?
Yeah, who knows?
Here's Mr. King.
Here he is.
Look, lurking back there.
And now just drive lower.
So, boy, you don't have a chance at all.
When he lowers his shoulder one on one.
I'll drive quads on that young man.
The big bulldozer, Tyler King, 12 yard run over 2 minutes time, a drive that should have ended at midfield 33 yards on the day for the big full back and two touchdowns so Murray as a couple and King has a couple Roger Holmes doesn't know what hit him.
I get the feeling he's thinking you should stay in bed.
Well, you know, his kids are playing hard.
As you said, the defending state champions.
They've got a lot to be proud about.
They're just run up against this.
Buford Edition happens to be a juggernaut.
Well, they're going to get some field position out of this kick.
Look at that speed and coverage.
This is really against the best field position they've had all day.
Dublin is a fast football team, but the quicker team out here today is Buford.
Buford has owned the speed category in this game as well.
Rashard Smith and the rest of the Dublin fighting Irish needs something positive to happen offensively before they go into halftime.
At least feel good about yourself when you go into halftime.
Down by four touchdowns.
No.
Give it to their fullback, maybe a couple of yards and that's it.
That was Keyshawn Spikes on the carry.
He had 62 yards rushing as Jefferson County in the second round of the playoffs.
I don't want to really say this because coaches will faint, but maybe it's time for Rashad Smith to take the, you know, the game into his own hands.
He is, after all, their best playmaker.
Instead of handing off that last time, he should have read the defense maybe taking to try to make a play himself.
Instead, he drops the snap and Buford recovers.
I jinxed him.
And now the wolves have a chance.
As TJ Pride Moore fell on the ball and the wolves have a chance to go up by five touchdowns with a little over 2 minutes to go in the second quarter.
You know, Dublin just needs to get in the locker room and just forget about this.
And I'm sure Fighting Irish pride will come out in the second half.
They have a title to defend.
First on the reverse.
That's Dennis and Catch with a nice move and gets down the sidelines Tripped up inside the ten yard line.
And Drake is rolling Save the.
Touchdown for the fighting Irish Watch this.
This is what I was talking about.
Speed across the board.
Watch him come out.
Defenders got him dead to rights.
He breaks them down.
He moves his feet, finds another angle, and takes off.
Here it is again.
There is number seven had him.
And the other thing is Charlie Reid's got no help.
There was no pursuit coming behind him.
But the speed factor is very evident here today.
The wolves.
Slipping in.
Who else?
Tyler, can stop it.
Tyler Cain.
Oh, stop it.
His third touchdown.
Holy cow.
Is Tyler King performing on the big stage this morning?
Get him off the streets.
Don't let him out.
I'm not going up to Buford.
Here, my friend.
Over you.
My goodness.
My God.
There's four, four, four.
Make it five from five and it's 35 to nothing.
Buford in the first half.
Hey, coach, on the way home, stop the bus and give him a hamburger.
And then give him three.
Let's sit back and enjoy Tyler King.
The spin with this on people.
Nothing I can say.
He's left you speechless, boy.
Anthony Thomas was just bulldozed into the end zone by Mr. King.
Only two plays in 16 seconds.
And Tyler Cream.
Tyler King with a hat trick in the first.
Half, too, was.
His third touchdown from eight yards.
Well, these Buford wolves are as good as advertised.
You know, I feel for Cody Case because he's a great defensive back, who's an excellent wide receiver for Buford.
But when you start in the middle and you're getting all you want in the middle is no need to throw that.
So he's not going to have any catches today.
As squib kick by Daniel Villa Villafuerte the backup kicker.
And it'll stay with the Dublin Fighting Irish.
Now, Buford just showing off there's shown the whole package.
He has a trick kicking game.
You know what?
Squib, kick it.
We're going to see the more two kick from them next time.
Well.
You know, it's going to be well-coached, as is Dublin, but it's also great to be well coached, as is Buford, especially when you have guys that can run like that.
And give a.
Couple of yards.
By Jeffrey Gasaway, who checked into the game.
Coach Holmes knows that when he gets in the locker room, he can't yell at his kids.
You can't yell at kids.
You're being, you know, oh, you're a little bit overmatched today and you can't yell at them.
You don't want to you want them to lose their spirit.
You don't want to disparage them.
They've got to find a way to come out and give it their best, find a way to get a score and leave here with a lot of pride.
Playing for fighting.
Irish pride, we second half Our Keeper is a Smith and Smith out in the oven for the first time and he may go for a while.
Two men to believe he's brought down by Demetrius Murry.
And that's a huge play, a good positive play for the Irish.
That's what I'm talking about.
His Rashard Smith.
That's the quarterback, that's the playmaker, that's the kid who makes it happen for Dublin.
Look at this.
Nothing really there.
He's got a little bit of a seam and then the great instinct to cut outside and cut it upfield and make something happen.
40 yard pickup.
He's got to carry them.
To the quarterback.
Yes, he does.
Looking toward the end zone, toward Canada and it's incomplete.
There were two receivers down there.
Yeah, nobody really that open, though.
Cody Case had great coverage on the receiver.
You know, his dad was one of the great safeties in the National Football League and because of injuries, we lost our corners.
Scott Case had to play corner one year.
All he did was lead the league in interceptions.
And it's been passed down to Cody.
Yeah, second down, first scoring threat of the morning for the fighting Irish Smith the end zone again it's picked off by Demetrius Merry Murray in midfield Thompson brought down by Johnny Reed Big play after Big Play for the Wolves.
The play was really made by the pressure.
Let's see who it was.
The hit Smith watch this.
Boom.
Couldn't see his number.
I don't know who that was.
So that's why he had to get rid of him prematurely and couldn't follow through with the ball.
And Johnny Reed was able to force Collum and save the touchdown and timeout called by Buford.
The 30 seconds to go and what a morning a first half that man has had number five Demetrius Murray two touchdowns on offense and interception on defense.
Full time out so he could get his breath.
Well, the Dublin cheerleaders are trying to get the fans up from Dublin.
They made the trip up today and this morning's Atlanta.
Will be.
Here to cheer about.
They're going to make a cheer up that can work here.
In the last 30 seconds of.
The first half, both good protection, all scrambling for his life.
He was just running in circles trying to make anything positive happen.
And he's finally brought down.
By the Dublin Fighting Irish.
Anthony Thomas Good for you two.
For you, Anthony.
That would have really been demoralizing if you had him dead to rights and had him reverses field twice and he was able to make a completion.
So he got that'll be a great final play of the first half.
A first half dominated by the Buford Wolves.
You take one more.
Look at crazy legs.
Whoosh, 35 to nothing.
Now before the wolves leading the Dublin Fighting Irish, the defending to a state champion Irish Buford undefeated on the air 13 now looking to return to the state championship game.
And let's hear from Davis Sutton they beat him.
Okay well coach Simpson, you're your team is used to performing on big stages and they definitely came out to the big time this year, going into the half with a very comfortable lead.
But there's always something to improve.
What is.
It?
Boy, if you watch the games yesterday, we better not relax.
I mean, you know, we preach one play at a time and don't look at the scoreboard and hopefully we can do that here this second half.
But but I know we better stay focused.
Now, going into the locker room, how do you keep up the momentum?
You know, it's senior leadership.
It's about those kids understanding that it's a 48 minute game and we've got to come back out here and play.
All right.
Thanks, Coach.
Good luck in the second half.
Good luck back to you, John.
Thank you, Davina.
And welcome back to the Georgia Dome.
The class double semifinal.
Buford leading 35 to nothing on the field right now is the Buford High School.
And I love this name, Band of Wolves bands.
They're led by the band director is Wallace Konrath.
Jonathan Kaplan is The Drum major of these Band of Wolves.
There's 80 members of them.
Then join the band The Wolves on the field part time.
But have a.
Different band, The Band of Wolves.
Let's go down to Dave in a sudden.
Well, I'm here with Wally Konrath, with the band director of the Blue for Band of Wolves.
And you guys have been on big stages before.
Talk about your competition at Lake Lanier this year.
At our competition at the Lake Lanier Tournament Band's actually high school, we were the Silver Division champions and had a wonderful performance, as well as performing up at the Herb Street Classic up in Ohio with the with the football team this year.
We've had a wonderful.
Year and this selection that you chose was kind of funky.
What is the name of the selection?
Well, this our show this year is called Play That Funky Music.
And we included music from the disco and funk era from the late seventies and early eighties.
Where those girls get those funky outfit.
Well, it took a lot of time just looking around, trying to find stuff and catalogs everything.
But with the help of my wife, who's our auxiliary supervisor, we were able to find a lot of fun costumes.
All right.
Thank you.
It's great having you here.
Welcome back.
We're at halftime.
Buford up 35 to nothing.
The Dublin's high school fighting Irish marching band on the field.
The band director is Ken Goff, Ty, Boris Thomas, Brittney Holliman and Jamal Jackson are your drum majors.
They're putting on a motown show.
Enjoy it.
That's the Fighting Irish band from Dublin High School, performing a motown number.
And let's hear from Dave Venus shutting down the field.
Dublin's Fighting Irish band.
And I'm now joined with the director, Ken Goff.
And you can't help but notice how huge your band is.
Talk about that.
It's going to be a situation that I walked into.
This is my first year in Dublin and there has been a great history of the band and it's been something that the community has really thrived on and has really wanted to see in a good sized band and in a good band.
And so it's been a great situation that I've been able to walk into this year.
We have about 120 with five staff members.
Staff members have just been incredible in welcoming to Dublin.
And one of the staff members happens to be your wife.
My lovely, beautiful wife is one of my one of my staff members.
She's been she's been great helping me out this year.
This our first time working together.
And it's just been it's just been really nice.
Now, technically, how do you put together a performance selection?
Well, the first thing is I want get something that has a broad audience appeal.
And this year, Motown is just one of those things that whether you're young or if you're a little older, you appreciate the of Motown.
And so I wanted to start out my career at Dublin with with a good show.
And so Motown was just the obvious, obvious choice for that.
We started in July working band camp and working, working on the drill and the music.
And this is the product you see today.
Well, thanks so much for your time.
Let's it back up to the booth.
Thanks.
They've been a great job.
Both bands.
Let's go to the football game first half highlights and though I don't really know where to start, but let's start with number five.
With Demetrius Murry because he had a great run.
He's really impressive.
This is the kid we were talking about looking to bounce to the right up the middle, and then he's going to bounce to the right side after this.
Coming up right here and take it to distance.
And he's the guy really said, you know, at his size where he's listed, he looked so much bigger once with so much power.
Then his weight of 210.
Now, here comes the guy they call Mr. Romper Stomper and Buford Tyler King.
Talent King had a bundle of touchdowns in the first half and he was not going to be denied.
Look at the will and the willpower of this man.
Look at the sheer power.
Here he comes again.
Hit once, twice, three times.
Look at those piles drive and quads.
He wants touchdown after his name and he is from now on Mr. Romper Stomper.
And the statistics are dominated by the Buford Wolves 40 yards passing 223 total yards time.
That was King.
Tyler King with 41 yards, three touchdowns, a hat trick to lead the wolves.
We got a second half of football coming from the Georgia Dome.
Buford in Dublin.
Back after this.
Welcome back to the Georgia Dome.
Get ready to start the second half.
Buford up 35 to nothing.
David Sutton is down with Dublin head coach Roger Holmes.
Okay, Coach, we talked about earlier stopping their running game.
How will you just in the second half?
Well, we think we when we went to our five three package and toward the end of the second half, we had a little bit more success.
Bottom line is our kids got to come out and play with their pride right now and execute little bit better in the second half.
Yeah.
All right.
Thanks.
Good luck.
So Roger Holmes, he's not let it get to him.
He knows there's another half of football and anything can happen.
But he had a decision to make at halftime.
It was the rule in Georgia high school athletics that if you're down by 31 in the third quarter, the losing coach, the trailing coach has the option of having a running clock.
If you're down by 31 or more going into the fourth quarter, it's automatic.
So coach had to that decision.
A booming kick toward Murray and go out of bounds so Buford will have the ball to begin the second half.
Free kick infraction on the key thing the ball we placed at the.
35 yard line first down.
So Buford will have the ball the 35 yard line.
They've been an offensive machine.
We've talked about their defense, how good they are.
But this offense is pretty stout, too too.
Worse than ten.
Mpg goes going.
To keep it throws almost caught by Cody case finally something goes wrong for the wolves.
Yeah.
Cody had the thumbs up.
He needed to have pinkies up to make the catch and nice throw by Herschel who led Cody case just a little bit.
He was four for seven in the first half for a total of 40 yards.
Two he who's had 14 touchdowns on the year.
He's a starter on the basketball team as well.
He looks like a point guard type of guy.
The point guards, the quarterback of the basketball team.
He's a team leader in both squads.
That's Murray.
And Murray will pick up five and brought down tripped up by Andre just Rollins.
So here is an opportunity for this Dublin defense to start the second half with a three and out.
That would be a huge, huge positive influence for this fighting Irish defense.
Well, the Dublin band ended their performance with a fight song rendition of When Irish Eyes Are Smiling was the best I've ever heard.
That was that was fun to listen to.
Maybe this is what they're talking about.
Maybe this way to Irish eyes, the smile at first with the yes and.
Cody gets will be stopped short of the first down.
And so they do get the three and out and the green and gold of Dublin.
The fans down below us have something to cheer about.
Campos The pot.
And the shot.
Smith Back to.
Fair catch at the 19 and so now it's on the Dublin offense they get some positive plays to begin the second half the defense came up.
And as you can see, coaches elected not to have a running club.
Still confident adult in that Dublin fighting Irish offense Rishard Smith the junior.
Well he wants to get something positive and your next game if you lose this game is next year and you want the kids to go in the off season with a good taste in their mouths and feel prideful of their performance.
Mullins In.
Motion and you give this to Johnny Reid, I believe they stopped by Demetrius Murry That was Keyshawn Spikes on the on the carry the senior Oh had 62 yards against Jefferson County in Dublin second round win.
Really need to let Rashad Smith the quarterback performers Wolf in the duet make something happen.
Both one.
One one already today well the throw and complete that the Canada and Boston Cannon Canada putting on some.
Moves that gets nowhere T.J.
Pride Moore was there to bring him down good hands by Canada.
Well, shows you how quickly you can react with three men around that reception.
You can't juke like that with this defense.
You got to head straight to the goalposts is this defense has speed you take a look at in Canada the junior.
11 catches on the air on third down little shovel pass.
To Johnny Reid and Reid has the first down they.
Go, the old buttercup play.
The old buttercup play.
But it's positive.
And that's the first down for the.
For the Irish.
So now the Irish have a little momentum going and Drake this one's around.
Stood up at the line of scrimmage may have gotten a yard that's about it.
Give them by the yard and be second and nine as Omar Hunter and Dallas Lee and the rest of the wolves were all over.
Rollins, who's talking about Lee?
Who what's his name?
John from Utah.
The old Buttercup play.
What's his real name?
Regress to Lose Rose.
To Johnny Reed on that little misdirection.
Last shoot.
John and I were doing a game and saw that shovel pass, and right away I thought about Lee GROSS couple.
Who's the one who popularized that play when he played in college, and I called it relentlessly.
Buttercup used to run that play all the time.
I even know what was on your mind when you got that.
It's a third and long for Dublin Smith the throw and it's picked off picked off by Cody Vining Touchdown say 42 yards Wow.
See the breakdown the ball that's just great instincts see it when you get the camera.
It's a good rifle shot.
Well, you know, just a great break on the ball, actually.
What would have gone there was a pump and go.
There's a clear path to the end zone.
Whose Cody Vining was hanging on that if you gave it a bump and then sent the receiver downfield.
But those are all things that come with experience.
Now we've got a.
Block extra point.
Good.
Well, perhaps Dublin can build on that as it's 41 to nothing.
You take a look take a look at the interception again.
Yeah.
Then there is pouncing on.
Cody Vining 510, £185, he has four four speed in the 4042 yard interception return 84 tackles on the year as well.
He's all over the field and so the Dublin Irish will have another shot to get some positive yards offensively.
You know, we've been talking about this defense of Buford and that front seven and how how active they are.
And reminder quotes from Jimmy Chopper in the paper today at the front seven looks like nine guys.
Yeah.
You see how fast they closed.
He won't get laid down the wooden.
I think that Buford and maybe.
My eyes on.
Me I think the one of the fastest high school teams I've seen in a long time.
You know it it's hard to argue.
I mean, I don't think I've seen any high school teams faster.
Watch this and listen to it.
Oh, yeah.
The plastic popping will get you get you fired up.
That goes good with pigskin for breakfast.
Well, the keeper is Rashad Smith, and Smith has a whole bunch of white shirts on him.
You notice that Dublin hasn't been able to play in space at all to utilize their speed and what they do.
And it just.
Everything's been bottled up.
You to get the ball to the perimeter and it's intercepted by Vining you go the other way and it's it's intercepted by chase so you know it's, it's just been that type of day.
They've got to find a way to get the ball in space and make something happen.
Or more of the shots.
Smith is not.
Going to take over really in motion.
He is going to throw.
He's got big 78 chasing them and the pass is incomplete.
Trevor Warmington was pursuing and embracing Canada was the intended receiver.
Watch Warmington on the chase.
You know, look at him go that big old guy and then good coverage is downfield.
That was Cody case he just can't find an open can't find an advantage.
And that's what Dublin had to do.
They had to find one thing on their offense.
And establish that.
And they have a dance that able to establish anything that's easy for defenses just that good once again giving chase the pass by.
And Drake as well and Rollins with a great gainer across midfield to the 47 yard line Andrew six on the stop.
Good call coach that's getting a play in space Come to the right side now everybody flows left nobody out They get a good block downfield right there actually too good bloods here.
You're going to see it right here.
There's a block from 64, another block on Cody case.
And that's, you know, that's getting the ball in space.
This is what Dublin has got to do against this Buford squad.
It's Rollins again.
And Rollins with some good, positive yardage.
He'll get about four yards before being brought down by Buford.
The number.
Michael May yo yo that softened up the middle a little bit now.
It's been a long time since Dublin has been able to get any yardage, any production out of the middle of their offense.
It's build on that to positive plays.
Let's see things build on and put something on the scoreboard.
Finally, something for the Irish to feel good about is Rollins and Rollins.
This time we just stood up at the line of scrimmage and that's it.
Pride more in on the on the stop.
He's been all over the field today at TJ Pride Moore Yeah.
Just seen his father play, Casey's father play.
Just said that.
Was a thrill.
That was back when it was fun to be a Falcons fan.
Just Simpson in his third year, three wins, only two losses, six and two career in the playoff.
He took over for Dexter Wood three years ago.
He was on the staff with Dexter in fact, played for Dexter.
With Marietta when he was a head coach there.
A little misdirection runs.
He's been the.
Workhorse on this drive and he'll have a first down as he gets across the 35 to the 33 yard line.
A nice sustained drive for the Irish.
I'm still thinking about a grits blitz defense.
Those were the days.
Didn't win a lot, but people knew we were there.
Bull has established a memory bank going.
Dublin has a first down and a fumble by Smith.
He looks like he got on top of it.
Join us the third time that's happened tonight.
And that's what happens to a center when you've got a great defensive front like that that's been beating you up all the.
And they're little shellshocked.
In other words.
In that big center, £310 for Dublin is he's committed to Georgia Tech and he'll be getting a call today to.
16 yards and six carries by.
And Drake is Rollins he has over a thousand yards.
On the year.
Here it is.
Up the middle.
Not much there.
At least that stretches it out and makes Buford have to make a play in space.
Free of a third and long situation.
Roger Holmes came to Dublin from Henderson Tennent, Hendersonville Tennessee.
Good man.
Back in 2000.
Great coach.
He's a tough negotiator, too.
You know, he went in, talked to Dublin and he got a bump inside.
This kid's got the Hope scholarship.
But the deal makers.
He gets all the boiled peanuts.
He wants to coach bowl a little.
He's working for peanuts.
Smith in trouble eludes 12 year four rolls the care boy the third big king.
He's doing it on defense, too.
Well, you know, you know, it's amazing, isn't it?
You get a two way player like that in all these guys are two way players.
But they're.
Relentless.
He go with Sam Smith got a chance to make maybe turn something that they get a handle on and then they're going to style of king and.
Well first he had Omar Hunter breathing down his neck.
If you take a look at Tyler King's numbers on the year seven sacks he got his eighth 59 tackles, but initially a big Omar hunter chasing him down and he's headed to the other fighting Irish known as Notre Dame.
But Cain King scoring touchdowns.
And going has three He might score a couple more Smith in trouble again tries to get it out there.
And Drake a Smith and he caught it on the short hop unfortunately that's incomplete.
And King was there to chase him down again.
Coach Holmes, reverse the field.
That was the play that went for good yardage to the left side, then come back to the right.
And he's, I think, getting the feel also he needs to play this game a little more in space just to give him a chance.
41 to nothing.
The Buford Wolves leading the Dublin fighting Irish here in the third quarter that the class double a semifinal.
Here we go check out this Buford defense.
What's this is pressure on the quarterback even though the reception was made, who knows how far it would have gone down field.
They fly to the ball now and Dublin is really had no shot on offense to get anything positive going.
They turned it over on downs and so Buford go shot up a 41 to nothing and just give this to Al Hunt.
Now it's caught in the backfield and brought down by a determined Irish defense.
Yeah, good for.
Anthony Thomas there on the stop.
Playing hard, playing hard, not cashing in the chips.
So we'll show you Buford you know come up with some positive plays I mean playing still playing slobber knuckle football, knocking people around.
You know, there are people around the state that are amazed that the Fighting Irish are here.
They lost 21 starters from last year's team.
In fact, Roger Holmes had to replace his entire coaching staff.
Six assistant coaches left for 12 resilient ballclub.
And here they are at the Georgia Dome.
Those guys going crazy.
Let's just put together some crazy ones today.
He gets out the.
Midfield, the first down.
Anthony Thomas on the staff.
He looks like a point guard, doesn't he?
You know, with his instinct.
Swing from the dribble between his legs.
He doesn't get antsy.
Took a shot from Thomas.
Never saw that coming He's had some crazy runs today.
He's a competitor, though.
He is the emotional leader of this offense for the wolves.
He's a heck of an athlete.
And single back double tight end.
Steveson Murray and Miles now at the line of scrimmage picks up two and Drake as Rollins was there to greet him.
Can you imagine how much fun it's been if you're a senior at Buford and you grow up in that community with those guys and to grow in the game of football the way they have.
And there's so many, you know, performers around you that have that are so good that would be fun to be playing with guys at this point.
Well, you know.
But there are those programs that consistently win regional titles and then in those programs at that other level that win or not win but, you know, compete for state titles.
And then Buford goes the extra.
They have Division One talent as well.
There's a program and there's Tyler King and King and then the line of scrimmage and brought Down by Nick McRae, the Irish and Buford has had some success.
You know, they've won four state championships and 78 2000, 2000.
Those are single-A titles.
22 and 23 were Double-A titles.
And we've reached the end of the third quarter with Buford up 41 to nothing.
We'll be back with the fourth quarter after this.
Tied the fourth quarter 41 to nothing, Buford and Bo Buck.
We're in a rather unique situation now.
Yeah, we're an automatic running clock.
No time to get your last pigskin breakfast muffin real quick.
This quarterback is going to go quick.
The clock will only stuff with timeouts, injuries and TDs if, for instance, if there's an incomplete pass, the clock still runs off and Melvin.
Harris catches that bomb from Turay whoosh inside, the 20 to 25.
And he was out of bounds.
But of course, the clock keeps running first.
Look at Big Melvin Harris.
That big game.
Yeah.
He scares coaches.
Beautiful catch eight touchdowns on the year 21.8 yards per catch He's starting to get college interest from North Carolina and Dame and a lot of the scouting com people say that he is the best kept secret in the south.
I would I would imagine you know coach Holmes that's what he said to me last year.
Boy, I'd love to load it up inside against the running game.
But you can't because they've got that monster outside that wide receiver who's just great, fast good hands.
And Michael Manley has come in at quarterback is some of the.
Second and third team is now getting a chance.
And they give us this storm Johnson and storm thundering down for a couple of yards it's 71 yards storm Johnson didn't in the first round game against Washington Wilkes may with 446 yards passing six touchdowns for the junior.
He'll take over for Tony who's next year.
Yeah, those seniors.
That just kind of feel great growing up together and having.
This kind of success.
I know my nephew that plays in was Billy Burns.
He's got a bunch of seniors, the same guys.
You all grew up together.
They won a state baseball can kick.
Now they're looking to get a state football championship.
And there's Storm Johnson thundering into the end zone.
For six points, 47.
To nothing, 12 yard run by Johnson Power Football as.
It's been all day long all morning.
Long just plug them in.
Just take a.
Look at.
It.
He's only a sophomore.
James, you mentioned there.
So Buford up now 48 to nothing.
You know, though, Roger Holmes is one of those special type of coaches and he talks about what's special about coaching.
Well, for me, I think the thing that's the that you like the most about the coaching end of it is the relationships that you build with your players and and you build with your community.
I think that's very special to to be able to have respect of your community and that type thing.
And you know, I think the other thing real important is the challenges on a week to week, day to day basis is is makes the job very enjoyable.
You know I bet the players love playing for Coach Holmes because you know, even though it's you know, it hasn't been the best of games.
I mean you look at him, he's he's still enjoying himself.
He's still positive coaching up, still teaching.
Well, more importantly, coming out of the locker room, you know, when Davina spoke with him, you could see that, you know, there's no no need to panic here.
No need to get mad at the kids.
You're playing against the superior football team.
You know, sometimes you've got to get you got to take lunch to be able to grow.
He's won 64 games as head coach of the Dublin Fighting Irish.
Yeah.
Roger Holmes, one of the old timers.
He's a great.
Was successful in Tennessee as well before he came down to Georgia at Hendersonville.
And the Irish will start off at the 35 yard line.
We hope you're enjoying this game throughout the state of Georgia.
And around the world and the World Wide Web, adds Rashad Smith.
Under center and Drake, US Rowland's breaking in.
He has a first down.
And mauled and hauled down by both hours and De'Andre Khan just.
Simpson his third year you know he's had some great mentors as a as he's gotten in the coaching profession he played for Pat Dye and then was a grad assistant for Pat Dye and and then for Terry Brown in Auburn.
And then he became an assistant with his head coach at Marietta.
Dykstra worked here before, and he really talks about what a mentor, what a father figure Dexter has been for young.
He's got the opportunity now to follow his mentor and father figure and it's been successful trip so far and Rashad Smith on the keeper and he'll have another doubling first down all the way out to the 41 yard line.
And good news for Coach Hollins is that Rashad is only a junior.
Yeah, he'll be back.
It is his you know, he's the guy.
He's the news here.
He's the one who makes things happen for them in all phases of the game.
At least the football player.
And at least he's going to have at least he's going to have returning starters.
I mean, unlike this coming year, when he had to replace his whole team to pitch to Johnny Reed, Reed brought down behind the line of scrimmage and the wolf defense still making some noise, but down by Blake Bennett.
That's why look at this defense right here, you know, just swarming all afternoon.
And now, obviously, Buford has some depth to.
What Coach Holmes doesn't like this running club?
Only for the reason he'd like to get a few more plays on tape that he can coach from you in the off and spring ball.
Your next on August.
Three, brought down by Hunter Hunter Jones so so is Buford Wolfe defense and they'll graduate some players but they've got some players to back them up and make some noise for 2008.
Meanwhile, the Dublin Fighting Irish third in 11, just Rollins in motion and Smith looking toward Rollins.
Let's go.
He's behind the defense can hold it in double covered there.
That's the first time all morning that Dublin has had that opportunity to throw the ball.
First of all, they had a know the receiver had a little bit of separation and second of all, the quarterback had time to throw because it goes outside bides time, good blocking up front and there was a little bit of separation there as you can see.
Just too much toward the white.
Lines.
But that's the first time this morning we've seen that.
Here's a fake punt and the pass is.
Almost kind.
Whoa, what a hit by number 12.
Michael Mann, the backup quarterback.
Yeah, Michael May just did a great job.
Also plays defensive back.
He's also a junior.
Coffey was trying to hit Rashard Smith.
Let's listen to this plastic pop and watch him think.
Oh, ball on the ball.
It's called reckless abandon.
So Michael Mann, who delivered the wood, will now come out and lead the wolves on.
Offense and then picks guys around him.
Really play hard, too, you know, if the quarterback is laying it out on the line like that, like has been done all day and makes everybody play hard.
And give to the lone back in the backfield couple of yards there Jake for the burka, well, we had to carry.
Harry Mears, the legendary Georgia coach who after his coaching days in Georgia and Ole Miss, wrote articles for the AJC.
And I read one actually last night that he wrote about in 1957.
He was talking about going for the exit, going for two points.
The winning game.
He said at one point he says that it's an honorable thing to do to go for the win and not just to come away with something like that.
And that's what Coach Simpson is doing here, doing the honorable thing.
You know, he's up by a bundle.
You know, he's got a great coach on the other side.
He happens to have a better team.
This.
But you don't embarrass the team in the you know, you take care of high school football, you take care of the coaching fraternity.
And most of all, you don't hurt the kids.
And also, he's giving the young kids and the Buford team a chance to experience this atmosphere in the Georgia Dome, the NFL atmosphere, of course, it's been three years since Buford was here and now they're back and they'll be playing for a state championship next next week.
Right in the balls.
Oh, Michael may keep it going.
The first thing I think that was a fake.
I don't know how he did it.
And I think he put it in his gut and took it back out.
Well, it's almost like he was there.
Then he grabbed it again.
Even the assistant coach was laughing about we near the three minute mark here in the fourth quarter.
Michael May is the backup quarterback for Devon getting some action.
On Jackson Malone back scoring.
He has a touchdown today already and.
You'll get a couple and that's it on first down bring up a second down as the clock continues to run double and the defending to a state champion although their season will end in 2007 with the loss here in the semifinal, you know, this is one of the the gold standard programs in class to this is a program that's won four state championships.
They were a power in the late fifties and early sixties, winning three class eight titles in 59, 62, 64.
The time they shared last year was Charlton County.
You know, there's one thing I want to say about this.
There's a football term that really describes what Buford is all about and what they look like, how they played today.
Wow.
I was thinking more jaw dropping.
Wow.
Deonte Carr is now your quarterback.
Some are all smiles.
They're on the different sidelines just near the neck and a half miles of broken play there scoring Johnson running for his life out actually got a couple of yards for weeks.
Thorne was supposed to run one way and ran the other.
Yeah.
Couldn't have been the quarterback's mistake because he's wearing the wristband on.
Fourth down.
Oh, let's take a look at Deonte Carr is the third Buford quarterback.
And you go center one last time, three under a minute.
Downtown you fullback.
Right up the gut.
The honorable thing to do on fourth and nine he turned it over the double and got a little room just that's the way to go out with class and style.
So double and get one play perhaps two and the Buford end is making noise.
They're wolves dominated today and they're heading.
For the state.
Title game.
It's been a while since the Wolves have been there.
And just Simpson.
In his third year will take the Wolves to the title game.
How appropriate that the Buford defense on the last play of the game tackle the Dublin running back for a loss but is on Buford this morning 48 to nothing.
The wolves are heading to the state championship game their last state championship back to back in 2000 to 2003.
And Jeff Simpson there with Roger Holmes has restored that tradition.
And again, one of the best season in sports right there, the post-game handshake.
At Buford swarmed from beginning to end.
And Buford wins this.
We'll be back with.
And welcome back to the Georgia Dome, where the Buford Wolves at the feet of the Dublin Fighting Irish, 48 to nothing.
Sutton standing by with what did coach Jeff Simpson.
Well, first off, congratulations, coach.
You're going to the championship.
Yes, it is very exciting.
I'm really proud of our kids and the way they stay focused.
After a big win last week, you know we were nervous that in our kids had beaten Charlton so long and then coming into the dome today against a quality opponent like Dublin and never expected we'd play this well today and I'm just really pleased for our coaches and our our seniors in our community.
All right.
Thanks, coach.
Congratulations the next game.
Thank you.
Thank you, Dave Vena.
So the before the wolves the feat double in 48 to nothing.
They go to the state championship game, they'll play the winner of the game.
Coming up next, the Lovat Lions taking on Cook, Jim's Pinocchio and my glasses are have that for you.
So stay tuned for that one.
And stay tuned for the entire day of high school football right here on GPB for BO back and Venus Sutton and our crew in the truck of the entire crew of the Georgia Dome.
I'm John Wilkerson.
So long, everyone.
