It's the boys three high school basketball championship.
The Columbia Eagles come in at 29 and five.
La Grange has yet to lose this season.
31 and all.
Good evening, everyone.
Still cryogenic along with Herb White.
Our pleasure to be bringing you not only the nightcap, but the final final of this year's high school basketball championships.
What a matchup we've got.
Yeah, well, neither one of these teams have lost within the confines of Georgia.
Columbia.
The only teams they've lost to have been out of state teams.
And one of the reasons for that is Gershon Cobb.
He's a great player.
He's a swing guard, He's a point guard for these guys.
And he's the only guy that averages double figures for Columbia at 18.
A game starting lineup looks like this and they are a veteran group inside and outside.
Cobb is not the only one that can score.
They've got a freshman.
Dean rated one of the best point guards as a freshman in the country.
It's rare.
Cobb, Tyson and Sessions and Dr. Phil McCrary happy to be here.
You know, for any team within the program, that's the ultimate goal for any program to try to get to the state final.
Just a measure to see how far along your program has come.
And we're just one of the fortunate ones just to be here tonight to be able to compete for the triple AA title.
And it says a lot for our program, says a lot for our key and the hard work that they put forth to get to this part.
Now, you look at the other side, La Grange coming in 31 and oh, it has all gone perfectly for this team.
It's a big sign.
Scores some big time athletes.
Well, they've had some close games.
They've had a one point game in the playoffs.
So they've been tested, but they've come out on top every time they've been tested so far.
And their top scorer, their top player can not only play some hoops, but pretty good athlete in himself.
Yes, that's Jamie is guns B is a quarterback on the football team and he's the quarterback for this basketball team as well.
And look at him.
He's 15 points and eight rebounds.
He's a65 senior as well.
Just like both these guys, seniors, they know what it takes and it's going to be quite a matchup out here this evening.
And here you look at a team that is well balanced with Hill and Thomas and you see the senior leadership it's Baynes and Hardy and guns V all seniors for coach Mike Pawley who again is liking what he sees and again happy to be in the finals.
Yeah and you know obviously we're excited about being here.
What a privilege.
It's a goal.
It's been said for a long time.
I've been coach for 22 years and other than my two years I spent college where he played for a national title at Auburn.
This is my first time to be playing for a state title, so I'm very excited on a personal level as my is as well.
What it means in La Grange High School, the last time we played for the state title was in 1985.
I've had teams go to the Elite Eight three times now, not been able to get to the Final Four or even the title game of the last championship has been in 77 was 33 years ago.
It just so happens that it back in 1991 in our football program, it was 33 years up in 1958 four, they had won their last state title.
So it's exactly 33 years this year.
So coincidence?
I don't know.
But we're going to try to make it happen.
Well, the longest arena you see t shirts, Mike, many Latinos are graduating 1984 from the great He's pumped.
Both teams are rare to go with a game we could have well he was taking it back to 77 for their last championship.
I remember one more championship.
These guys had 66.
They beat a Decatur High team that well, I happened to be there for that one.
So the last of the Mahaffey, they had some great runs back there in the sixties as well.
And, you know, Columbia never has any problems on their team that can't be solved.
You know what they have.
Dr. Phil coaching them, for gosh sakes.
All the problems I told you in 1966, let it go.
Okay, Let it go.
I'm not holding a grudge.
It's been an awfully long time.
It's going to be some excitement.
Then it's up.
Let's go to the public address.
ANNOUNCER Here are your starting lineups.
Georgia and the Georgia High School Association class triple-A Boys State Championship.
Tonight's final game will have the Columbia Eagles with a record of 27 and five dressed in blue as your visitors on the scoreboard and the La Grange, Granger, with an undefeated record of 31 and zero, dressed in white as your home team, now have your attention for the starting lineup.
First for Columbia at guard number 13, a five foot nine freshman Taj Shamsi, to a guard, number 20, a six foot three.
Senior Chris Brewer at forward number 25, a six foot six senior high strung at center number 35, the six foot eight senior guard near Section and guard number 23, a six foot five senior JR Sean Hall and Columbia's head coach Philip McCrary.
And now for UVA Grange Granger and guard number three, a six foot two senior Roy Thomas at guard number 15, a six foot senior to long.
He'll at guard number 24, six foot two.
Senior Deonte May at forward number 32, six foot two senior play hard at center number 33, a six foot five senior Jamal just joins me in Lagrange is head coach Mike Polly class triple old boys high school action coming up What a game we have.
Stay right there.
All the action after this slide gets started.
The of it.
Some folks suggest that after watching John Nelson handle the rock on the camera today that we need to send him to summer basketball camp.

All right.
Welcome back to The Voice three, a high school basketball championships.
Let's go courtside.
Eric Hunter.
Hey, Stu.
The Columbia girls held up their end of the bargain.
They won their triple A state title with the boys.
Make it two for two.
Well, the La Grange Granger's had something to say about that.
They're determined.
They're undefeated.
And yes, Coach Mike Pawley has his mike's maniacs here.
They're ready to go.
They want their own state title still.
Well, they do.
And they were this team and these fans are so pumped up, they were cheering in the last game and they didn't have a dog in the fight here at La Grange.
Always turns out for their basketball teams.
Like I say, they've got a tradition going back to the sixties.
And of course, Columbia has been one of the better teams and for AA, certainly for the last decade for some of the teams.
Coach McCreery has had, it's going to be a pretty even battle and should be a great win for our last broadcast this year.
State Call in the game tonight.
William Charles Dunn, all Colombian blue, La Grange and white.
And here we go.
We are underway with La Grange in there, white, as I mentioned, and the blue and orange that Columbia Eagle Rangers open up man to man, taking their time, filling it out, as we see La Grange trying to play that tight man to man jumper up.
No good.
Put that easy in.
And we're getting some inside play and some pressure already on La Grange, La Grange going inside easy lay up and good And that is Hardy with the easy too.
He's a senior both teams right at the basket.
No feeling that way so far.
He'll just go right at it there And credit Royal Thomas with the drive and dish for Harvey on that play.
Run to the left the ball looking inside and pass will cover double team then turnover with La Grange wanting to run with the ball Got him in the field I should say talent caught up in easy and that is what La Grange will try to do as Mayes gets the easy lay up both teams like the transition.
Good.
If it is wide open for him, it's not this slow up tempo going to be important tonight.
Well, you know, you're playing at this breakneck speed, but you've got to stay under control at the same time.
And it's a fine line when you get one of these up and down games, just slowing it down, looking inside as the game stays in that manner.
For the Eagles with Simms eyes a playing six five, the Tigers will try to go inside when it's out there and rebound their good La Grange again looking to run but doesn't have the numbers.
So somebody is missing an assignment on the box out on this right side.
Columbia's had a couple looks at tip ins over there.
La Grange will try to complete a magical season.
Taking the time and slowing it down, this team will go eight deep and a veteran team that's guns be number 33.
That's the score for this La Grange team to hoop up and no good.
And now Columbia trying to get to number guys It is an up and down game inside La Grange poked around and Columbia maintains out shot no good rebound La Grange and here they come running manes leading the way means to the hoop hands up and no good and it's the Columbia Eagles back and forth we go Manes has some hops and he took that coast to coast couldn't convert Cobb with the easy shot and that's why he is a big time player averaging over 18 points a game.
Yeah he smooth nothing rushed about him Cobb going to Northwestern just an excellent staying with a 3.6 as well so Northwestern glad to have him in the big ten that year the Grange looking inside taking the time for four the score early going.
Good to have you with us to Clyde Clinic and Herb White bringing you all the action live here in Macon.
Three boys championship game each.
Try to take it to the hoop in a night block inside by sessions Darnell a session six eight slot slotted that went away.
Well I want you to keep an eye on this guy that just came in for the Columbia Eagles is Jamal Reed.
He's a sophomore.
He's six six Coach told me that he should be starter, but he's bringing the guy doesn't want to get too cocky but he going to be one big time player and he's got the ball now.
Good looking athlete, that's for sure.
He goes looking inside and they're looking inside to Reed six six Nice jumper up and no good.
But you could tell you're absolutely right He's got a nice shot and good box out Grant Grant tell you how good this kid Reed is again.
So.
Carroll they've got a national reputation.
He came off the bench 26 points.
But Columbia has a win over Gonzaga from D.C., who is ranked number 13 nationally this year.
So they've played some great high school basketball team.
What a block inside again by Reed and a youngster showing it on both ends of the court so far.
Well, we're just underway.
4 minutes left in this first quarter for four.
Much more to come as we go and look for our final champion of this basketball season.

Well, they better hurry.
This is the last game.
This is the last game.
And again, I say it every year.
The sports fortunate enough to do two games in Gwinnett.
A couple here in the tank remains in Georgia basketball, a grant with some backcourt pressure galore.
The Eagles having a little trouble getting it in and getting it up and the car will take off.
Jean runs the show again.
Only a freshman looking inside brings in a tight man to man.
This dilemma.
Eagle team has played three teams in the top 12 nationally, so they've gone against the best outside.
And good.
Nicely done by Tyson, who again will be around for a while.
Only a ninth grader.
Well, it's saying something when you can play the competition.
Columbia has only had one player average in double figures and still be such a great team.
That's just great team basketball, still well balanced Lagrange trying to get some balance now two outside shot got there and Thomas is often controlling the boards are the eagles still with the backcourt pressures mid range looking inside and looking and they're up big man with the rebound and that will be foul and going to the line will be done Helios sessions a senior six 8 to 46 weeks kid inside he'll be playing tight end for Florida State next year.
Tremendous basketball playing a pretty darn good basketball player as well.
So football, basketball going on six, eight, 240 and still growing.
Yeah.
Incremental credit.
Jamal read four sessions going to the line because he caught that ball in the air on the rebound and passed it to sessions underneath without ever coming down So just a heads up play by the young guy Very impressive second of two up there in the range, only down by three with about three left in this first quarter of three championship basketball and then pulling it back and looking in against this Eagles tough man to man defense outside no good on the boards and rebound here now and the Eagles get it to go down Nice rebound control on the fast break it up and down we go talk to both coaches Irvin both were concerned with tempo and it looks like they're going to have what you call controlled breaks.
If it's their butts open, go with it.
Well, you can't change the way you did, but you know what brought you here?
You got to stick with that.
And so teams like to run.
And until it gets out of hand, both of them are going to run the Eagles with the ball.
Looking inside as Reid tries to post up the one inside of Detroit's nicely done beautiful shot and then Four Corners from here.
But you got to figure when it goes to a half court said it's going to save Columbia with the size factor they had with the inside players.
They handled the brakes barely giving possession to the huddle up.
And what an off balance shot by Will Thomas off the board.
That was great body control there, fallen to his left and flipped it up over the rim on the glass softly nine six with a couple left in the first quarter looking for that two man game.
Get inside and this team has a lot of size with Samuel Mike now in the game 368 He's 225.
Here you go.
Oh that's nice body control there Royal Thomas picked up the foul down on this and he stepped in Made a nice play on defense, got called for the foul.
If he had an Aris to call, he could have drawn the charge.
Three This Fleming Eagles team with a lot of size inside Lagrange going to have to box out and only let him get one shot.
That'll be a key guns be it.
Six five is the tallest Granger.
So you're right.
They're going to have fun.
There you see it.
But the high low.
Let me get the inside position.
La Grange with some back court president now putting some pressure offensively there.
Charles way outside with three off to the rim and the Eagles control looks like they're going to have an easy one Great hustle great play by Antoine Green to stop easy layout and I don't want you to stop it He didn't foul very difficult to do here you see nice hands which Daniels is doing it for the lay up and Anthony Daniels looks inside.
He goes with the patient Daniels only a junior at the points.
It's for good size to try to get in is the coach There's Reed and just a little too much.
You want to take that ball down a little closer to the man to throw that.
That's a bad angle for the pass.
And that's going to be a tough matchup down there with Reed calling for the ball at six eight being guarded by.
Yeah, see who was on him that time was Thomas.
Wow.
So three checks out here.
Yeah.
Tyson back in the ball game for the Eagles putting some back pressure on this Lagrange team under a minute to go first quarter low scoring game but some good defense as we see the steal there Eagles are trying to run and try to find something underneath triple teamed it in and nicely done by the air Tyson the trying to get it under control trying to get it easy whoop underneath as well nothing going and it is the Eagles with the numbers with the break just guessing but well they're all over the boards and here comes Lagrange with 19.
They're not going to hope the one wild shot there and the Eagles control.
So 10 seconds left in this first quarter.
Good shot up here.
Tyson, who's had a couple of nice whoops.
Well, I not see Mike's maniacs, by the way.
I doubt if Lagrange has played a team with the quickness and size that they're facing in Columbia High School here in western Columbia, in that tough Atlanta area.
And I mean, this is another one of those teams.
Looks good getting off the bus, as you say, too, just loaded with six, seven, six, eight athletes.
Lagrange trying to get that last hope and the quarter with four.
Got to get off a shot, get someone open and that was no good.
So final possession 11 to 6 Columbia up in this first quarter much more action seventh quarter oh this three eight championship game on GPB.

This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station, serving all of Georgia, Columbia 11, Lagrange six after the first quarter.
Let's go courtside.
Eric Hunter.
Hey, Stu Lagrange is going for their first basketball title in 33 years.
Columbia likes to win it in 18 years.
They won it in 0608.
Stu Herb, will they win it in 2010?
Well, let's ask her if you're the four lots to cater.
Well, Lorraine has got to find a way to get some good looking shots.
And they've had some open shots from the corner.
But when they take it to the hoop, they're facing that big front line.
And again, some quickness from these big guys at Columbia.
So it's going to be a tough job for the Grangers.
But they didn't go undefeated because they're going to wilt under pressure.
No, you mentioned the tough conference at the Columbia Eagles playing, but this one brings Tina Simpson some great competition as well, trying to go inside.
Nothing doing it.
There's that jump ball possession arrow going Columbia's way.
We almost think Lagrange is going to have to find a way to score some outside shots, maybe loosen things up a little bit inside, gets around the thinking a little bit about their outside ability or look in transition and try to get some easy Utah turnovers or were there some good defensive rebounding Grange on defense Well the Eagles looking to attack and they're looking to attack inside with two or three of their big men and they range from six 5 to 6 eight taking the time.
It is looking inside which Tyson couldn't handle.
And here's what we're talking about.
LAGRANGE Try to get out on that transition.
Little slip through there but they remain ahead.
Control that was great offense defensive help by Caron Hill on that last play Now there you see it but you were talking about you might have one guy and you get a fake and he's out athlete again you got another guy six, seven, six, six coming out here and putting a hand up sometimes it just takes you to get into the game a little bit to figure out how to play with a team with as much talent as Columbia's got.
So it's going to be tough.
So long pass easy here out Jones goes up doesn't get it out on him It'll be a mid-range ball Well that's the second great defensive play in a row by Karen Hill with his hands.
Strip the ball a minute ago and on this replay again.
Wow, that's just great defense there.
Well, that's where the coach goes.
How in the world they get a baseball pass.
Wait, what are you getting a nice defensive play?
Nicely done.
Lagrange, Grange attack, 11 of six, Columbia up by five is the turnover.
It's Columbia four, Lagrange two.
And the Grange has to keep that number around there because they cannot afford to turn it over big time.
Rebound by that big man Jamal.
And we mentioned an earlier sophomore trying to stuff it in there and it's going to be a little volleyball.
Yeah we got a foul from behind somebody reaching the play is Royall Thomas the out of bounds on the side or underneath I guess we try to that to the reason the active shooting ref say no take it out and we've got a lot of balls go in and out on this basket down at our left tonight that was a good looking three pointer then wouldn't go down.
Columbia on the attack falling away and Lagrange maintained possession and the foul on the region by the young guy Jamal Reed playing in this case with the official.
But there's no doubt he reached out and grabbed I think he saw it he got fouled on his shot and you see coach falling.
I was talking to him.
I said, hey, there's a poorly on your roster.
Who is that?
Because that's my son.
So he's going to get any time.
So he's only a sophomore.
He can play.
But you know, I'm not going to be personal.
He hopes he gets some time.
Maybe he'll be up 20 if he gets gets him in Lagrange on the attack, looking inside with some patience, trying to work alongside inside Herb has mentioned it's an awfully big Columbia team inside.
So back out we go to the hoop and nicely done on the reverse turn.
Yeah, he's playing some great defense and that was a nice offensive move by Hill to get it off in there among those guys in Columbia below senior with a reverse lay up and we've got a three point game where he goes on the attack looking inside again Reed trying to get it in his block.
Lagrange trying to get in the transition game once again, trying to get the numbers back and forth we go.
And it is Columbia from I think there were three or four turnovers in about 5 seconds and you're never safe.
This little Grace team is just relentless coming from behind and able to reach out and slap the ball away without fouling.
I'm impressed.
Sessions checks back in time.
Somebody checks back in.
Well, just six, eight, six, eight, six, eight, five, nine.
Okay.
Spreading it out over Columbia Eagles almost in the fourth quarter.
Fourth quarter, little force there and it will be plenty of Eagles ball right now inside could have been a foul That is just for Greer will go to line the shooter.
We've seen that a lot we've seen and attributed to coaching, as you always mentioned.
But a lot of times they're inbounds plays and it's almost happened routinely.
Someone's going to get an easy shot.
Well, if you're good coach and you get the ball out of bounds underneath your basket, that's a good place to try to set something up for sure.
And ball is in free throws.
Play a big part, especially in that last ball game was greater Atlanta Christian knocking him down all night long, drill for his career.
A lot of schools looking at him including finishes up in the New York area.
He's looking at them as well.
So he's going to play at the college level.
It's another example of the schools north.
We talked about Northwestern neck.
IGNATIUS They're all getting Charlie Scott's good, the other deck and all this talent from Georgia, the Green Zone, the attack spreading it out a bit against this man that am on the Eagles waiting patiently, looking inside working it around combat zone for a second and there's no easy shots out here.
I'm telling you that Columbia really swarms the ball handler.
Hey, we'll talk about it.
Just put those hands up and play some defense.
They've got the height to do it.
This is a very long 20 Eagles team run B to trigger it in way high in a way and a turnover.
And we talked about it as coach lives long ago.
We can't afford that.
Let's call it all kinds of success.
A delightful guy both coaches on the up no possessions or premium in a game like this.
You can't be throwing it away.
La Grange with back court pressure, the Eagles break it and attack going up again.
That's one of the best freshman I've seen in a long time.
And he did it that great looking lefty stroke little short corner myself.
Dick Barnett, you probably played against La Grange taking the time that's the man that they'll look to guns be averaged 15 points a game he is their inside threat you can see the Eagles sort of collapsing on him strange taking their time.
Some good defense on the exterior.
Boy, I tell you, the Eagles are great switching teams.
And what I mean by that is when there's a cross with two offensive men that they would just let their man go, the other guy and they switch very, very quickly.
It makes it tough to penetrate against that.
Dansby was tied up possession area going a Lagrange way.
So midway between this second quarter it is a tight game 14 day.
We're back in a moment.
Today's games is made possible in part by the following.
Thank you.
Can I help you today?
I know.
Thanks.
Just looking at this is cute and so the my dad.
You wouldn't do it there, so don't do it here.
Sportsmanship.
It's up to you like they're the fashion police.
Welcome back.
Second quarter, halfway through Columbia 14, Lagrange, eight early observations on this winner.
Well, excuse me.
Columbia has got to find a way to score some points here.
Very difficult.
Excuse me, Lagrange, Columbia, with the great defense.
Their fundamental defense is a beautiful thing to watch.
They move their feet, they slide, they switch.
Very tough to penetrate against that type of defense.
And they don't really have the size that they can just throw the ball down low.
So, again, they're going to have to create some offense from outside.
And again, off the break, as you were mentioning.
But very difficult thing to do right now.
Lagrange inbounding the ball.
Remember trying to remain perfect this season inside, outside, passing it around looking for the open jumper made it easy hoop on the date is Columbia Eagles defense Impressive they are impressive.
It's easy to play defense for 15 seconds when you go 3045 a possession like they're doing not bad underneath and forced in here come the eagle Try to get the numbers but will slow it down.
You know Lagrange is playing good defense as well.
They've only given up 14 points to Columbia, who's a pretty good scoring machine.
But points come a little easier for Columbia with the size they have Lagrange on the break, trying to look for something, as you said, a transition not to be in.
The Eagles will try to go the other way.
And I'm guessing watching a lot of basketball, we're looking at teams that are shooting in the forties at the most percentage wise midrange back on defense, you know, and the big guy rebounds under his own basket.
That is always a bad idea.
Greg It's easy.
Okay.
Well, that's why the coaches say don't throw it in under your own basket.
That's exactly what can happen.
16 day.
And all of a sudden, Columbia doubled up on Lagrange range from outside, as Herb mentioned, try to look to loosen this defense up and that's one way to do it.
Nice jumper there as well.
Dante Manis Maines with the D.A.
remains with the little fall away jumper that was sweet from the baseline.
Well that's what he can do.
Now, here's the one you were talking about, Stu off the basket and you're right coaches will tell you whatever you do, hold on to that ball under your basket.
Do not try to say that.
Well, I think he was trying to throw that way down the other end of the floor just cause the bottom of the backboard with an unfortunate turn of events for the grinders.
Doc McCrary Right, guys.
Funny guy.
That's what high school coaches are all about.
Both of these guys, just tremendous human beings.
And Lagrange needs to get something to get this crowd.
They are just sitting on the edge of their seats.
Always a big crowd of Grangers came down here and they want something to cheer about.
Get a little streak going here.
Well, Mike wants his maniacs to start doing something crazy.
Well, Dr. Phil's got the maniacs.
Calm down right now.
That caught pressure by La Grange.
As we've been mentioning, they need some turnovers, need some transition baskets.
So far, the club, the Eagles have handled this back court pressure job, controlling Eagles, slowing it down, but they're looking for it to pop.
And La Grange, I think, would be happy to let him have those three offensive rebounds.
Contact Gordon.
There is the size Big garden Elliott Sessions with the tapping and tap that one with the left hand.
There you go.
That's what you need to do.
That's it.
You were talking about is Johnson gets a nice jumper from outside that got back in and there's that pressure going again to Jimmy Dean.
Now that's what happens when you're doing that scrambling man to man defense.
They get past you.
Then you got to try to swarm to the ball.
And as quick as these Columbia Eagles are, you're going to create some fouls.
When you do that little guy steals his style at the foul line to look at his feet a little different than you see normally almost looks off balance.
The end result, as he puts it.
And you look at the size, he looks like a freshman and he looks like he's even shooting off center.
There you see it?
Yeah, well, it works.
Just do it.
Henry.
Did he used to shoot from off center?
Boy, we hate yourself.
Sometimes there's people out there scratching their heads whenever.
Who is?
The guy who plays for the Hawks?
No, his dad, La Grange, trying to loosen things up, as Herb mentioned, into the big guy.
Cobb to help up.
And no good he controls it Looks like it will be the Eagles trying to run.
Try to get the break and try to get the number three beautiful move.
Not the volleyball.
No good.
La Grange with the ball.
The pace is picked up.
They should have numbers.
If they can get this one up.
Great.
Save to the hoop and a layup and a nice move by Rob Thomas who took it to the hole.
Boy, that was a big save.
Looked like was going out of bounds and all of a sudden the game started to pick things up on the offensive end.
So Jumper no good Lagrange trying to press and run again in transition pulling up there like green no good dollar means good and that is by Marty Johnson a little run now by the Rangers and all of a sudden it's a four point game and Columbia playing right into their hands coming down and taking the quick shot.
Oh look out for numbers going the opposite way.
Well, they had him three on one there, Stu.
That's it.
That's a tough break for the Rangers there.
They could have had the three on one numbers and threw it away under 40 to go in this first quarter.
Let's see.
Well, sometimes every time I say anything, I go for one.
They take it to the hoop.
The Eagles now with 26 left in the first half and they're going to back it out and perhaps go for what?
And coach says, Yeah, let's make it one to the hook.
A little dangerous play there.
Work it around with 13 left and there's a foul a little bit carried away with that one by gone down the road Cheney trying to reach in he's seen a lot of his teammates come up with those but the official had to call that one and La Grange is doing a good job of shutting down John Cobb.
So far, so tall.
He has to be incredibly satisfied.
Looked like it was getting a little out of hand.
But his range with the defense in transition as he hung in there, Eagles looking for something.
They got a long three pointer no good tapped out look for La Grange will not get a shot off and it will be the Eagles with one last shot with 2 seconds to go with this first half one step.
Oh, my goodness.
Offense.
It fell right before the half heads up.
Play by Martez Johnson and that was caught on Cobb probably just going to be the end of the half.
I don't think it was a no, No.
One and one.
Yep.
Player control referee's talking it over 20 to 16.
Columbia up by four and I'll look and see if there was any time on the clock.
I believe there's only 2 seconds left when the player from Colombia caught it and they took at least a dribble.
So it was a they're going to give him that one second dunk.
They got one minute.
It should be 1 seconds.
So we'll count down with him.
Very good.
First half, not a lot of shots made, but let's give credit to the defense.
Yeah, great defense by both clubs.
So I believe there'll be one second left.
The Rangers able to hang in there with their quickness.
They've been able to steal the ball from Colombia several times and Colombia doing a good job with their size on the boards.
So it's been a battle of boards against the steals by the Rangers.
And of course, La Grange could just open up with a few more jump shots.
This could really get to be an exciting game, talking it over.
So I thought the time was up.
What's going on here?
Mike's maniacs in the background, counting it down.
So being high school again, stop the clock.
Hit one.
Oh, they get it right.
So we have to do this again.
They got it under control with 2 seconds, so they're putting two back in a spread that take.
Let's just let the announcers count it.
Now just give me 1/1000 a good call.
One Mississippi where they go.
Herb So they're just going to they're going to give it to one Mississippi and it's just going to take they're going to almost buzz the buzzer when it gets into someone's hands.
Let's see what happens.
I think one second left.
And it was thought up by Cobb entertaining first half, close first half.
So we've got a ballgame.
Let's go to Eric Hunter.
Courtside.
Coach, are you pleased with the tempo so far in this first half?
Nope.
We just make a dumb decision with the basketball.
We play it more for Steph than we're playing as a team.
And right now that's hurting us right now.
During the course of this game, we just got to go back and get.
We realize what got us here.
Teamwork, what's got us here, and that's what we've got to go back and try to correct again.
All right.
Thanks, Coach.
Back to you guys.
I like a coach that tells it like it is.
Columbia up by 420 to 16.
We've got more coming up on YouTube.
You're watching Live from the center plex here in Macon, Boys High School Championship basketball, Select movies you like to see.
I like to move it, move it, move it, move, move You like you move it.
Thanks for watching the basketball action here on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
We're going to have the second half of the game coming up in just a bit.
I am John Nelson, the host of Prep Sports Plus here on GPB, alongside my tag team partner and more talented basketball star, the elevator from Decatur, Herb White.
And we are going to talk about why folks need to be MVP's of Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Well, simply because if you want to see more great basketball players like Maya moore, Kwami Brown, Dwight Howard Lewis Williams, top 100 trees and all the great teams that we've seen over the last 15 years, there's only one way to do it because if Georgia Public Broadcasting does not continue to do these games, they're going to get spread out amongst who knows who.
And you're going to see games at all times of the day.
You're going to see maybe tape delay games like it was 15 years ago.
So Georgia high school sports deserves more.
They deserve what we're doing for them.
And the only way we're going to keep doing that is with these guys help, John.
And that's the way to do it.
You know, you talk about basic membership and you talk about all the different levels that you can be an MVP for Gp-B.
And here's how you do it.
Basic membership, 25 and $35.
And you can do that by checking that number right there at the bottom of your screen or doing it on our secure server.
B Dawg $35 level is basic.
It's a one time thing.
If you're a student, a senior, a member of the military, it's $25.
But we also have some thank you's associated with the basketball championships that you're seeing right now here on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
At the $35 level, there's your foldable stadium cushion for your foldable sport of choice.
Doesn't have to be just football.
It can be whatever sports you want.
Go ahead and take it with you Indoors or outdoors has a GPD logo.
You get to show your support for GPB out in the open 12 months out of the year, the $35 level next step up.
You can do this one on installments at your GPB logo.
Roll up blanket once again, show your support and stay warm 12 months out of the year that you can do on installments.
$6.25.
You can't come up with a greater impact by being an MVP for Georgia Public Broadcasting at the $75 level.
And how do you do that right now?
Once again, number bottom of the screen website, GPB, Talk a few quick clicks.
As we like to say, you're in business, you can do it on your AT&T mobile phone at GPB.
If you are part of the team here at Georgia Public Broadcasting.
First off, we want to thank you.
If you haven't made that effort to be a part of the team here at GPB, now is your chance to do it.
Continue to show your support for the only statewide voice that Georgia Public Broadcasting has and you got to do it.
This is the time to do it.
Herb, Right here.
GPB You know, you may have guessed this.
I do probably my best work on the other side of the camera.
Jon That's probably evident because, you know, my job is to raise corporate dollars for Georgia Public Broadcasting for our programing.
And let's face it, we have some great corporate partners that work with us on our high school sports.
And I don't need to tell everybody who they are.
They'll be able to see them during the but only between the games and between the quarters because we do not interrupt our programing for commercials.
So I thank our public support, our corporate supporters.
When you get the chance.
These guys don't even run the hard commercials like they'd be able to run on commercial or cable television.
They run spots talking about their support for their communities, and that's why they're involved in this.
They're involved to help these because they have kids, they have families, they have people involved in these games just like you do.
So if you're sitting there in your living room or in your den and you're enjoying these games on Georgia Public Broadcasting, there's only one way to say thank you for us for having games available to you, and that's by going to your phone.
Becoming a member of Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Use a credit card.
Don't forget 24 seven you can go to WW GPB, be dawg and become a member of Georgia Public Broadcasting 24 seven and we urge you to do that.
There's no more important factor in this equation than you out there, so realize that it's time to do it.
John All right, one more time.
Let's go through the thank you very, very quickly.
$35 level.
Once again, this is a one time investment in Georgia Public Broadcasting.
It's the federal stadium question with your GPB logo.
Next step up the ladder at the $75 level, a little over $6 a month on average.
That's a roll up blanket for your investment in Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Then the combos, $125 level logo, thermos stadium cushion, roll it blanket.
Then the his and hers are years and years at the one $75 level two logo thermoses, the two foldable stadium cushions in the blanket.
John You see a lot of spin in politics and television, but this is not one of the places.
This is the truth.
I don't know how you do this.

Welcome back to the second half action of the three day Boys championship game, Columbia up by four 2216.
Let's show you how it got that way.
We talk about so many great underclassmen in this high school championship series, but this is tough.
Jimmy Dean, he is only a freshman and he was the one that put on the show that kept the Columbia Eagles up in this game, doing it from the outside, doing it from the inside, doing it from all over the court.
But this team hung in there as Lagrange came back and behind some great plays won by Keenan Hill on the reverse.
And then all of a sudden Martese Johnson got hot.
He started hitting from the outside.
And this is what they need to do.
Herb, as we talked about it in the second half, get inside, get outside, get easy baskets.
Let's take a look at the numbers.
Tell me what they mean.
Well, three point field goals.
The green just didn't make any and there weren't many free throws in the first half for anybody.
Columbia made three out of their six and the rebounding is about even is just about even just what you'd expect looking at the score.
So you know a good job by Columbia saw it again with their defense and the steals kept them in the ballgame and excuse me, Lagrange and Columbia, of course, doing a good job on the on the boards and with their size.
And then Columbia defense again was very, very tough.
Well, how do they feel about this?
First half by Callie kind of happy about it.
He talked to Eric Hunter.
Coach, you've only got 16, but they've only got 20.
How would you assess your team's first half performance?
If we could just get a couple more baskets?
We missed a couple threes I thought we could have made.
We had a couple hustle plays.
It ended up in baskets for them.
I thought we missed three transition opportunities with our heads down and now I think we should be up 22 to 20.
I mean, it was a great half.
I feel really good about that half.
We are a very good defensive team and I think I think that our energy right now is going to take us through it.
Well, good luck the second half, guys.
A tight defensive battle.
Speaking of energy, I'm telling you, you can see where that guy's got a crowd over here that loves him.
He's very positive and I love the way he thinks.
I do the same thing.
I'm watching the ballgames and we ought to be up five.
But here's where we you know, he's got every play in his head and let's see what happens.
Well, he brought out the great point that his long range team and he knows it play some great defense.
And that's why we have such a tight game underway in the third quarter.
Good to have you with us, too.
Glad to have it here by bringing you all the action live from Macon as the Eagles attack that man, man who drains defense.
But coaches like to tell you the very important part of basketball games, especially at high school, the start of the third quarter.
Oh, yeah.
Well, in any basketball game, the start of the second half is the first 5 minutes.
That's kind of sets the tone.
And it's not an irresistible object meets an immovable force in this ball games, too.
It's too immovable objects meeting right here with both defenses playing very, very well.
It's probably the best two defenses these teams have seen all year against each other Right now.
They've been together for a long time.
Never heard you bring up physics.
But I get it.
And I understand and I agree, that's as much physics as you'll ever get from me, I promise.
Eagles on the attack going against Lagrange.
There's on that for the first half on that in the second half Sammy Dean, the freshman boy that's confidence for a freshman I'm feeling it's a beautiful Well I'll tell you what if he puts on some size only five nine now and even if he doesn't, but if he does, he is going to be a big time player for next level.
Yeah, well, you got guys like Kevin and Devin Downey playing at South Carolina, you know, Gamecock, you know, that guy and Fortson over there and some Florida's got a couple of guys in that five eight range.
So yeah, you can play at the next level.
There's a little thing right now but yeah he's got big time on written all over him.
La Grange on the attack the Eagles with that tough defense matching up at a minimum going to the hoop and looks like that'll be a foul So good drive by Will Thomas before the shot So I think they'll take it out of bounds Good job by the Rangers right there passing the ball around.
And Thomas finally got the little bit of a half step and made his move to the hoop second shot skirt shots And finally, the Eagles control and they're off and running, slowing it back down and bringing it back up.
Another blocked shot by the Eagles, so the Eagles will slow it down.
Looking inside, Coach wasn't too happy with the ball movement, so let's see if they work it around the horn a little A jumpers no good is short big strong rebound inside the look he comes around with it.
It is La Grange another turnover We keep an eye on that Back and forth we go.
How many times have we seen that in the foul?
And that'll be a shooting foul for Todd, who go to the line for both teams, cut teams trying to establish the domination here at the beginning of the second half.
Guns be a little bit out of control down on this end.
Got up there with no place to go and it resulted in a turnover.
Now, John, Sean Cobb will fire up a couple in for the pace of this game.
There's not very many free throws that have been shot.
This young man going to Northwestern next year and we were talking about it and you have to adjust to the referees.
The previous game that we had, it was called tight, this the final ten, and we certainly weren't criticizing the officials in that last game.
We were just pointing out the way the game was being called.
You know, some referees will let things go and let it play a little?
Those guys will call the type, but they were consistent the whole game.
Interesting from the Eagles who didn't put anybody on the foul line and everybody back.
Well they must respect top free throw shooting ability dilemma up up by eight mid-range on the attack try to stay in control jump ball would be the Eagles possession Well I'm sorry excuse me La Grange ball still and another up you know another chance you go up in the air again especially that far from the hoop and against a team like Columbia, they're going to make you pay for it.
Luckily, they had the possession error going their way and the Rangers will have another shot at it and they need a hoop here.
You want to keep in contact, You want to keep them within sight.
Good defense, have to go way back, get the ball turnover now all over the place places this Eagles defense outside and no getting shot on the three so the Eagles will bring it back try to go up by double figures looking inside the range of that good tight defense tough shot underneath out in the second shot.
No reception for the Eagles way outside with the three in or around easy tip here and inside you're talking about the size and there was the easy shot by fan I haven't seen a lot of Mike but he made his presence felt right there ten point game with 530 left in the third quarter as this Lagrange team would have been a dream season wants to say undefeated matchup man to man for the Eagles turnover to the hip hop beautiful shot in one and Taj Jimmy Dean is putting on a show and again just a ninth grader you go watch the body control here that's just unbelievable Really, really sweet.
I love guys that use the glass like that, man.
It's a beautiful thing.
And all of a sudden it's a 12 point game.
This team from Columbia is explosive, 28 to 16 with 511 left in the third.
Well, the Rangers need to get some direction on offense the last couple of times down the floor.
They haven't really gotten much done offensively.
And there's no doubt about it.
This Columbia team is the best team Lagrange has seen this year.
And it's I think it's just the athletic ability is just a little surprising for them.
They've been able to overwhelm people with their quickness all year and now they're against a team that's probably just about as quick as them and much bigger.
There's not.
McCrary, who got the message across the Christmas he was say they got it makes it.
I didn't hear much and I'm guessing he said more of the same.
Well, Coach McCrary said we're the toughest team that the Grange has seen this year.
They're very quick, but they're up against eight know run in the past 249.
So Columbia, an explosive team and Lagrange trying to stay in range for the next couple of minutes.
A big for the grain there's no doubt about it.
12 point game and 511 left in this quarter tops Jimmy Dean shooting one averages just under nine points, already has 15 for the night eight midway almost through the third period.
5 minutes to go.
Lagrange, as you said, need a hook and now that eagle defense is just they're taking chances agency out front because they can't hurt they got the big guys underneath right And when you get the 12 point lead of course it allows you to take a few more chances and that makes them very dangerous trying to pull the trigger on the three they've been short and try to loosen up.
Well, least the defense.
I get it.
I understand.
Well, we said that was going to be a key.
The grinders were going to have to make some shots from outside.
And so far they haven't been able to do that.
451 left in the third quarter.
We're back in moments.
Coach Tiger was out in today's games is made possible in part by the following broadcast of this program is made possible in part by the Georgia High School Association, the GHC.
We'd like to thank State Farm for their support of high school sports programing on GPB.
State Farm agents are proud of the achievements of Georgia student athletes and would like to remind families and teams to drive safely in your communities as you travel to work school or play.
State Farm wants what you want safe driving for you and your family.
Welcome back to the Boy three Championship Columbia over Lagrange 28 to 16.
Should they win, they will join an elite group of teams who have taken this championship.
And there you go, Herb, you've seen most of them.
You've done most of these games.
Pretty good group, no doubt about it.
There's been some great teams.
And how many times has that been done?
Looks like nine times in the past.
So going back to 52, you were 16 then, only watching that still Cincinnati Oh man class, you are a real cheap shot artist still.
But it's it's getting to a critical stage here for the Rangers.
Coach Polley is really going to have to come up with something.
And I don't know exactly what he's going to come up with.
He can't make the shots for your team.
They're getting some looks at the basket from three point distance.
They just haven't been able to knock them down.
And that's we knew that was going to be a key against this really tough Columbia defense.
Well, maybe you try for core pressure.
Maybe you try to turn the ball, get some baskets and get some transition easy hoops that way.
And here you go with the full court.
Exactly.
A tough team to press.
So Columbia squad, they're very well coached.
We'll go with some of these big guys, get loose at the other end because you are going to see some throw downs and they back off.
Just a little token pressure war eagles and that's what they are tonight.
The Eagles in Columbia, all over the glass.
La Grange manages to try to get a rebound.
But second shots.
You cannot let this Eagles team have it up in spin in a beautiful shot.
And it is down for Kyle and what you said to La Grange, this isn't it, at the DOCSIS pass by chassis.
Well, we didn't see the pass but dame with the great little bounce link in there that was nice and dipsy doodle for two job at the line.
Try to finish it for the three point play.
It does and all of a sudden it's 3116 but this about half of this third quarter it's five.
The Greens on the attack the Eagles looking sloppy back inside.
They don't want to give up any easy hits and they have it tonight.
Bit of a hack there.
When Elliot Sessions called for the foul another one of these big took six 8 to 14 La Grange trying to slip one in and they go outside and reset Boy two easy shots or at least run around the hook.
Irving can't connect.
That's the best look they've had at the basket in a while.
And you're right.
Couldn't get it to drop Eagles on the attack, pulling it back out and setting it back up.
Walking Karen Hill coming in three low points in the second half Boy that yeah I'm telling you Columbia the Grange just has not seen a team with the defense these guys play that I'm really really impressed with coach Metzger's group and you know when you get four or five guys the size they do and you get the quickness out front, you can play defense, but they're just fundamentally sound.
It's not just their athleticism.
They know what they're up to.
The Grange on the attack so far shutout in this third quarter still without a hook.
And the Eagles continue to dominate the rebounding and throw a nice drive to the basket.
But you see the shot they have to take.
They really have to make a change just to get a shot off.
Right.
Turnover La Grange with a possession, trying to get an easy open layup, then in and finally the ice is broken guns, there's gore and they've shut him down pretty good tonight.
He's had a lot of big bodies up against him all night long.
He taking good time with under three left in this third quarter.
La Grange playing good defense here.
But I mean, it's not only offensive end, it's doing things good.
Fade away.
Not the best shot.
Second shot up there.
End And that's how you do it by Greer.
And that is not what you want.
Want to slow it down?
You don't need turnovers right now.
No offense.
I mean, it's time to really start to concentrate, but it's not time to panic.
And his guns be going down with a nice layup on the break.
First two points for this La Grange team in the second half.
With that pressure, the La Grange little tighter.
That is not a guy you want to press.
The Eagles, work it around.
They're looking harder for the big men.
Got a hold.
I know down here on hill all for the personal and he will set it up again.
Grange going zone for the first time this evening will not help it because this Eagles team with the rebounds getting second and third shots and they're just playing volleyball is La Grange.
Just get it and get it under control.
Trying to run with the ball and make something happen.
It should be a layup then.
It is nice running with the throat to finally get it easier and that was pretty good job.
They had the numbers.
Now they need to come up with a stop or two, make a run to the end of this third quarter.
He is working it around, taking the time that Columbia needs to finish this quarter strong.
If they can cut down in this league just a little more, give them a little boost going into the fourth and a little confidence.
Eagles setting it up every time I say they're going to go for him or not.
So let's see what happens.
120 left in this third quarter.
Eagles looking for something tough shot here.
Beautiful shot there.
And you're not going to stop it.
That's a heartbreaker there by Cobb Cobbs, big time score averaging 18 points a game this season.
And you can see why he's looking inside as well.
Nothing going there.
Is the pump fake.
There's a shot, there's the hoop.
And finally, something to play Harlem.
Nice looking move there.
Actually more out of him.
He's got a sweet move in there.
And it's like to me, he's going to be a guy that's going to have to step it up a little bit.
Already I've seen it averaging seven points a game, four points tonight, a couple of boards and everyone council wants to complete this three point play and still within range.
Yeah.
And those are the kind of shots that can get you back in it.
Yeah.
They're going to block some shots and here they're tough, but you got to keep taking it in there to the paint, keep taking it to the rack, and if you don't score, make sure you make the free throws.
You missed that one.
Didn't get the three point play.
And just as we were talking about like friends is about Eagles having a bit of a drought towards the end of this third quarter and Coach McCreery had to call a timeout because his guys were just about to get a ten second call first, 32nd timeout, 3522 with a little over a quarter left and well, the Rangers sure are the kind of team that knows how to win because they won 31 of them.
So they've been tested and they just haven't been tested against the likes of this Columbia team.
But they just need not panic.
There is time, like you said, to just get good shots and continue to play the solid defense.
They played with a good defensive possession a moment ago and Cobb just rose up and made a sweet jump shot with him with a defender right in his face so tall he spent 15 years at La Grange.
Well, winning season.
So not only the players used to winning, but of course the coach is used to winning a lot of years.
46 seconds left as the Eagles inbound the ball.
Watch for that ten count.
There's the field goal percentage team burning it up?
No, but more shots by Columbia.
And they've made a couple more and they've had more free throws as well.
The Eagles looking for perhaps that last shot of the half good hands, good timing on the ball.
And the Eagles remain in control.
Somebody is wide open underneath, but just slow it up.
Under 15 left in this third quarter.
Eagles will look inside.
Well, the Rangers need a stop here.
Don't want to give up two and make it a 15 point game going into the fourth quarter.
You know, it's only two points, but this is big right here.
The Eagles looking inside tipped away.
Good defense.
Maybe they'll get a basket they have tied up and off the board.
Good try, but some good defense by Lagrange at the end of that third quarter.

Hey hey Where you going?
Kick it by me and the one in this class.
I wrote this lab.
I'm number one.
Hey.
Hey.
I don't think so.
Yes, why not?
I have a kid.
You wouldn't do it there, so don't do it here.
Sportsman in shape.
It's up to you.
What?
Jerk.
This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, PBS station serving all of Georgia.
Welcome back to the boys.
Three high school basketball championship with 8 minutes left in it.
You told me you were going to hold Columbia 35 points after three.
You think you might be lead by three or four?
Yeah, I'm sure Coach probably would have taken that.
But, you know, defense wins championships do in just about any sport.
We got two heavyweight defensive teams slugging it out here.
And so far, Columbia's just had a little more offensive talent and that's the difference in this ballgame.
I'm having trouble triggering it in the the Eagles get it in tonight shots have been has the ball has been in control one of the more freshmen I have seen in a long, long time.
Well, that's the toughest position to play as point guard, especially for a young guy.
Brings in control, but then turn it back over and the Eagles will have another shot.
It will get another hook.
That's a killer.
Got to come down with that rebound once he got it in your hands.
And it's getting a little sloppy to start the third quarter.
Well, the Rangers are going to turn up the pressure now full speed, I guarantee you, and try to create some turnovers.
Let's see what they're trying to do offensively.
Go inside and try to hit from the outside, the big guys underneath, easy hook.
And that's the man that's going to have to take over.
He is the guy is guns.
He gets the easy hoop underneath.
I told you, I like Paul Hardy.
What he's doing in there, He's got some nice moves.
He's long He's a guy that can get some shots inside, keep taking it to the hoop.
And look at this La Grange defense all over the court.
I told you the heat was coming.
You got a fight.
Oh, I thought they're going to get a five second call.
The first referee calls a timeout.
32nd time out to say, easy, guys, easy.
And anytime you have that full court pressure or pressure over heard, a lot of times it's the big guys that are the keys to breaking it, no doubt about it.
And Columbia's got a lot of big guys that can handle the pill problem for he is he's got this whole La Grange to no points and it almost double or get half the total he's had through three quarters.
So a tough task for the Rangers, but they're certainly got a lot of left in the tank, it looks like to me.
Well, Mike's maniacs finally had something to huff about and care about and just great crowd throughout this high school championship that they're always on to win, etc.. And obviously here at the center.
Clarkson Macon Yeah it's great opportunity for both of those couple around.
BALL It keeps you young, Stu, to get around these crowds and these kids and see the energy that's here.
It's great.
Eagles now need a hoop to quite calm down this La Grange team.
Reed try to go to the hole for some things a little and he's called for Walker Yeah that was exactly right Or Rush tried to take it on his own.
Now score here.
Puts a little heat on the Columbia Eagles dunks.
He's the man to go 1:00 inside is it way up is Reed the sophomore He was well over the rim.
Oh, yeah.
He made up to that bad pass.
Boy, he's a good looking athlete.
Yeah.
What's this one about?
The top of the square, I believe.
Well, not quite that have, but a great time.
And no doubt about it.
La Grange, with a chance to cut into this lead fourth quarter with 640 to go go inside, get inside that zone there.
Eagles coming back with La Grange gets hit one three to give them a little momentum, but not to beat tonight Eagles bringing it down easy hoop easy layup is Greer goes in for the lane Nice look by Reed sophomore He's got a presence out here on the floor The Braves one on two but he'll be crowded He'll go to the line Well Thomas will shoot a couple.
Here's the replay, taking it into the trees.
And as we've mentioned, we've seen previously big shots coming down for both teams from the foul line.
So let's see what we got.
Oh, the Granger's got one three pointer two nights.
Do something like that.
Boy, I can't remember the one three.
But if you say so, I believe.
Well, maybe not I mean they hardly have anything from outside and we knew that was going to be a key, as we said earlier.
And it's just really, really tough to score against this Columbia team unless you can loosen that zone up a little bit.
With all that said, if Thomas hits, we've got an 11 point game that's about a four possession game over there.
So here comes out with range pressure and they are now tightening it up.
This is in this is all over the place and the ball just staying in with great scrambling, eagles hitting control up there.
And what a big shot that was.
John Cobb, senior.
Well, that was a big one.
And no three pointers so far tonight for the Granger range.
Going to the hole now, taking it all out, take it all in all Thomas all of a sudden, royal time is starting to warm up.
It's got a couple of hits to the hole.
Got to have some stops.
So having control with the ball looked like it might have been out of bounds, but no call up with a jumper, big time shot for two straight buckets for the senior surge.
Why he's the leader on this team.
Great.
Still taking it to the hook.
And it's big guys for the Eagles just standing over the hands up breaking again Up again.
No again it'll be mid-range ball coach Pauly shuffling and some new guys.
Man, I'm telling you, with the tempo of this game has picked up about 25%.
Jamal Reid, the sophomore, has had some impressive blocks and offensive plays inside, as you see by Paula.
Try to figure this thing out to get his team some offense.
They could never can.
One of those threes.
Yeah I don't know what kind of three point shooting team they were during the regular season but I bet they make some every game they play at home.
If you can't make it from outside, do it the old fashioned way and just take it to.
The hope is that names will try the three pointer.
Nice drive over the big guy, so let's see if he can hit the foul shot.
If he does, we've got a ten point game.
Got to give the Granger's credit.
Never say die against a really tough opponent.
And there you go.
The grounds with great back point pressure.
So far.
But Simmons sneaking deep here this Daniels checking in for the Eagles Granger with that double team and full court pressure Cobb controlling the Eagles pulling it back out And there he is again with a three car the old fashioned way Cobb gets it the other the other way.
And, well, they know that Lagrange is having to scramble.
And whenever the double team comes, Columbia's hitting the open man.
And that's going to leave somebody open for a gimme.
This Jason Cobb, good looking player, rising to the occasion late in the ballgame like you would expect the senior leader to do 15 points, four boards for Cobb and this would be about six points for him in the last minute, just about what he averaged during the season at 18.
There you see again, the war.
He goes with no one on the line.
Everybody back in the making, one up 4431 with those seconds ticking away for his full range team who is trying to complete a perfect season while John rebound by the Eagles as they control with Daniels pulling down the ball Cobb with no one on him for a second, would pull it back out.
And that's a smart play at this point.
This Eagles team will be content to just look for some easy shots here, but just waiting for the power get to give me.
There is a good defense.
There's a big time play that Roy Thomas can completely that's just unbelievably quick hands by Royal Thomas to strip that ball like that and then beat the man to the ball and down the floor against the big time player did everything but put in the layup Let's give Cobb credit he didn't give up on it after he was stripped he got back down there and played defense mange to shoot a couple as well.
And he'll get a second goal was for 26 again Lagrange keeping this Eagles team within sight Pretty good game for man with eight points in a couple of words wants to make it nine does kind of miss that sound You know that net going like that man that's a is a nice net they've got the classic click is that pill goes through their Lagrange with that full court pressure putting the pressure on wanting the turnovers Cobb is controlling the ball for the Eagles.
He'll be at the point a little bit of fourth quarter action for the Eagles as they try to wear down some clock and a touchdown outside.
Probably not a bad foul.
You Don't want to start fouling every time but if you try to go for the steal, that's okay.
Say up front, that's 17,000 to be a one on one.
Now John Cobb is shown he can knock them down often in this range team as we had mentioned, perfect season.
But as we mentioned, Columbia also has not lost to a team in Georgia.
They have lost a few games that they played a traveling schedule against some of the better teams in America.
Jason job right on his average of 18 points a game 13 down with four to go as Lagrange is on the attack up and no good and they've got to get him up there quickly as the Eagles control they've got numbers three on one up no good went to the foul line Greer will go to first Greer will shoot a couple and you're right about this here this team heard their bounce.
We've seen a lot of teams like this in the finals.
That's how you get there.
But inside and out you got the speed, they've got the size and they've got a great defense.
And that's how you win basketball championships.
This went up and good by Greer.
Were these good looking Georgia high school players that will take it to the next level next year.
Senior And again, as we've seen many times here, this is where it can get real ugly.
A close game, good looking, not so close because you're going to have to take some quick shots.
You're going to have to foul the line.
Still looking inside, trying to get something, anything.
And this can't look from the outside.
One of the big stories of tonight here, there is a spinning lid on the hoop for the Rangers underneath who kicked it got to be midrange ball.
And it's not like La Grange hasn't had some pretty decent looks at the basket from three point range and even mid range jump shots.
They just haven't been able to get them to go down.
And when they haven't, they've got very few second shots.
Yeah.
And we knew that was going to be the case we've seen a couple things like that in this tournament.
You've got to make they're going to make you shoot a high percentage because you're not going to get the offensive rebounds in many of them against them.
Range has to pull the trigger quickly.
We're running out of time outside.
You either have to take it to the hoop or throw up the jumper.
The other two champions we saw on four and five and look at that over ten on three point field goals.
And you know they haven't been jack them ten is not many for the game but boy I say that's just rough but you know Milton it got the similar team Miller Grove has got this similar team there they're big they play good defense You're only going to get one shot against those kind of teams.
You know, risk out front, taking some chances, going for some turnovers.
You know, the big guys are going to be back there and hold their ground.
And you're absolutely right about this Colombia team.
They just make you have to shoot a high percentage or you're not going to be able to beat them.
And they make it tough for you to shoot a high with their defense.
So the perfect storm, 3 minutes left in this game will be up high 12 Ball is going to call a timeout.
Well, you're going to have to put on that full court presence.
You're going to have to I think it's time if you don't get this deal, it's going to have to put them on the line.
Oh, yeah.
You're going to have to send them to the line.
Of course, they've been knocking them down pretty regularly.
I don't know what their free throw percentage is, but I imagine they're around seven and 75% on the night.
Colombia, we don't have the stats right in front of us.
Well, as we have a second, what will you take away?
Some memories from this year's high school playoffs that had players and performances and teams?
Yeah, well, I mean, every game we've called, there's been some very, very impressive young athletes.
That's the thing for me.
Some guys that are going on that are seniors, that the number of and juniors and tonight the freshmen.
It's just amazing to me the development of the young talent in the state of Georgia year after year and this year especially like every state championship that we've seen, the team that won has got guys coming back and are going to be tough to beat again next year.
La Grange, with that full court pressure and Eagles not having Jimmy problems getting over now and a little bit of trouble and there's a turnover.
So give this Legrand's team some credit.
You know, give up a lot of hard Yeah just under three to go they have to get these shots up quickly outside and look in Gonzalez been posting up the three still not today and that's one of the story is going to be picks it up no with another shot at it and a steal and here come the Eagles with the numbers underneath wide open and a turnover by dame you wouldn't think a guys slightest they could put that much zip on the ball fired that one got a little left handed spin on it maybe that was it and coach saying look we don't need that.
The clock is what we need rather have 30 seconds often are who keep 25 left in this ballgame time rapidly running out for the Granger's Jamal Reid sophomore who's looked so good, so athletic, checking back in and still the last couple of nights at halftime of the final game, we've had some Georgia high school coaches, honored coaches that have over 400 victories in their high school coaching careers.
And I mean, it's amazing when you consider some of the careers the coaches have had.
I wish we had time to name them all, but the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association and league with the Georgia High School Association started started recognizing those men and women, and it's well deserved.
We know the impact they have on the young people's lives.
You know how it was with your high school coach?
I a great high school coach, Roger Couch, for three years and then the great Roger Kizer, all-American from Georgia Tech and still friends with both of those guys.
And they had an impact on my life, no doubt about it.
We're honored at half to half.
I think we're about ten coaches and between the ten of them, over 6000 wins.
Unbelievable.
And this people sometimes think coaches don't matter.
We're blind.
48, 35.
And another one of those games, Stu, that it wasn't a blowout.
No.
If if Columbia ends up winning by 18 or 20 points, this was a ballgame that Lagrange if they could have just knocked down some threes and we saw that in a couple of games which fell last night, did you just knock down a couple threes, get a little something going, but they just couldn't quite get over that hump.
And when you say a couple threes really any threes right.
Oh for I think it's now probably 15.
And take a look at number ten.
That's Jay Corey.
That's the coach's son and coach John was quite honest and if you see my kid through the summer going terribly, terribly wrong.
Oh well comes Hunter.
There you go, Coach.
You should've put your kid in the goodness, Coach.
I guess Mama's going to have something to say when he gets home.
Wow, what a way to break the ice.
And another turnover.
And here comes Rod Rose with a slam.
And all of a sudden, we got a seven point game.
We've got a nine point game.
But you just got to give a lot of credit to the Rangers, man.
So close.
Just a minute, 43 to go turnover here, though, and it really gets exciting.
We're not done yet.
We've got two more and little 43 of high school basketball the Hornets taking the guy with the hot hand out there It is their turn all could have been has the Eagles control take it to the hoop surprisingly and they'll go for the foul line Cowboy will shoot a couple that's the right play Make the guys score from the free throw line Here you go.
This young poorly I mean I mean that was an NBA free there this year.
Well he needs to be on offense and his it's just a great play and boy they just missed getting the turnover.
Just a moment ago before Cobb got fouled.
So with the right play, you got to put him on the line That was Royal Thomas with that dunker stuffs up.
All right so even if he makes this shoot down ten you don't have to have a three.
Get it two.
But make sure you get a basket.
You come down to this end because you're not you don't have many possessions left in this ballgame.
Jay Cauley, only a sophomore, so he'll be with that for another couple of years and there's a miss.
Let's see what LeBron's can do to take it to the hoop.
Down he goes down.
Why not?
Dansby We'll go to the line now.
That's good.
A strong athletic senior move.
He was either going to score or get fouled.
All right.
That's a close call.
But look like the Columbia man Lugo with the hip just a little bit and some big free throws coming up for Jim.
Genius guns.
Be right here, Andrew.
He will shoot to 49, 41 and a half to go if he makes these two.
It's a seven point game and then you're talking about a three possession game.
And now Claude Rains is going to have to think about fouling right away.
Pretty much go for the steal.
If you don't get the steal back, get that foul.
Well, there'll be a lot of memories in this high school championship season for a lot of kids.
Well, if you're going to lose and it certainly is not over, but again.
Yeah, you're right.
La Grange showing us what they're made of and why they went undefeated this year in Georgia.
Basketball, just relentless.
Never give up.
I bet Columbia hasn't had the ball stolen from them here.
Many times of that pass down.
They've been held under 50 points many times this year.
So La Grange, again, with a great defense this evening.
And they just found it very, very difficult to score against Columbia.
They got the crowd here.
We say, hi.
They went on that what, they told somebody to stay away from the ball.
So they're going to leave from their four free throw shooters.
You only want three good free throw shooters handling the ball at this point in the game.
I had a nickel for every time a coach told me that.
Stay away from the ball, be a rich man.
I had a coach tell a guy to on the floor one night he got foul and the coach said, Stay down and he wanted to send in a substitute free throw shooter.
And he did it.
Made him fake the injury.
Then will shoot to and it wasn't me that was on the floor.
He was going to ask this one out for some good.
That's a pressure shot by the senior right there.
Mr. Grange turned very good full court pressure.
So he went out on second one.
Good.
So here we go, 130, two left, going for the steal.
He can't get it.
Still not fouling, still going for the foul although the coach at 14 gets it.
Well, if they could have got another couple of seconds I might let them get across halfcourt before fouling because that was about a five or six second count.
But who's going to the line?
Lorenzo Jones Well, I don't believe he's been to the line.
He hasn't been in the game much.
So this is the that's the guy you wanted to foul.
I don't know what his free percentage is, but he hasn't been in the game very much.
And I don't believe he shot A free throw is not going to be easy.
62% shooter on the year makes it up.
It didn't look like it in 60 to 82.
72.
He made some big foul shots.
Jones with the second and it is short so oh no no almost a turnover so here comes Lagrange trying to take it to the hoop either get fouled or put it in going strong.
Oh, not too bad.
The Eagles look like they had control and they do and they'll be going to the foul line.
So it'll be called boy hours.
Well, wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute.
They might have got right before that.
So yeah, I believe he'll strip the ball away and then he was fouled so he'll go to the foul line and it looked like almost a double call.
The ref had the first one and he'll go to the line.
And the tenacity of this Lagrange team will have a second one to try to cut this lead to seven one.
Let's be honest, that fourth quarter, like it was going to be a bit of a bore away, but it was the second one up in half and that was hurt.
Giggles Just want to get that ball down here.
Go on and try to get it to the open man And we've just about got a foul and they did oh they're going to cut city I don't know about an intentional foul right there Cobb will go to the line I didn't see it the the call intentional yeah and that is tough and I was totally agrees with it either that's not the time it's got to be pretty flagrant in my opinion.
The official saw it the other way, but I think it's got to be pretty flagrant at this stage of the ball game to call that, because that's a that's just about the last nail in the coffin right there.
You get two free throws and get the ball back top of the line.
And this is the first just under a minute to play this three, a high school basketball champion.
Our pleasure to bring you all the championship game to GPB this season.
Second, what you're going to point out, the Eagles will take it out looking for that championship.
Only minute away.
So you're going to have to get it in and foul and foul quickly like right there with them getting some park run down, didn't even catch him.
And then they do not see me.
That's more of an intentional foul right there when you grab the guy around the waist and the other one when the guys go into the basket, possibly demon freshman who we've been so impressed with.
Yes.
Go to the line, make some terrific shots.
And right from the line.
Columbia, 14 to 24, not great range, 9 to 15.
And we want to thank our excellent crew bringing you the great cam work, the replays, the guys in the truck, they know who they are.
Our good buddy, Frank Malloy from Massey here in making news anchor, always keeping up with the stats and keeping us informed.
Second went off so down by telegram's got to get something up.
You got to get something up quickly.
There's the three.
Isn't that the way it always is?
You get two in the last minute and a half and you went 38 minutes and couldn't get any green with that three and that's the seven point game.
This ballgame is still not over to go for that steal and then get the quick foul and here's a three pointer that they've been looking for all night Green strokes it nicely and thanks also to our corporate partners who do a great job for us and also all the folks that have called in during the games to make the commit to Georgia Public Broadcasting as we were trying to raise dollars to keep high school sports on the air and to produce even more high school sports.
And thanks to all of you folks who did that, thanks to everybody that came out, the people that were in that arena doing a great job, as always.
And and here at the Macon Center plex as well.
Just a great atmosphere for high school sports.
Do no terrible thing as the Eagles will inbound with just 43 and if they get it in foul immediately.
That's the story of the game get it in and no foul so far but then it was and a couple of extra valuable seconds ticked off.
Greer will go to the line and they'll try to put this game away.
Well, you look at grandeur.
I mean, it's it's not hard to see why they were undefeated.
I mean, tenacious.
Oh, yeah.
Well, if you're not ready for the quickness of this Lagrange game, I mean, they're going to they're going to just blow you away.
Yeah.
With the first and short and keep in that hope alive, even if he makes this now to, you know, an eight point game still manageable.
I think a broadcaster once said, do you believe in miracles?
We shall see.
Well, I've seen them.
Second one by drew up and it's good.
So let's see, Braves are going to have to pull the trigger again.
Yeah, you need the three now.
Coach has already hit one big three to really get this game turned around to the hook up.
In off balance.
And there's was a push and that's going to go against Gunther's now go no guns he's going to the line was put Wow thought they were pointing to guns we saw three to foul shots and 26 seconds can be a lifetime is deep and gun down certainly has not left anything on the floor tonight.
I'm going to tell you, a senior and he's been in there battling against bigger guys all night long and held his own pretty much.
And just a tribute to the Lagrange Rangers that they went up and good celebrating full court pressure.
Go for the steal as we've been saying then go for the foul right now really early.
Let the valuable time off the clock and no fouls even yet and that's surprising and we're why would you I just don't understand if you're going to foul you have to foul immediately and I agree you know it's you just have to do it That's the only way you got to even a shot.
They let about ten or 12 seconds run off that clock.
So it's a great we'll be going back excuse me.
Todd will be going to the line where he's lived at the line, shooting a couple where he's got a nice stroke.
15 seconds to go through, three boys, high school basketball championship, one I forgot to thank you.
Thank you, big guy.
All the best.
Always a pleasure.
This time of the year, coming and doing these games up and no good.
So, Lagrange, try to get this game a little closer.
1 to 1 and outstanding effort by both teams.
Is Columbia getting ready to put the crown on their head, their fans going nuts?

I put them against everybody.
Yep.

Welcome back.
It's Carla, Three boys, high school champions, 5446.
Eric Hunter with the Champions.
Coach coached three state titles in five years.
Talk about how special this one is.
But they're all special.
You know, we just wanted to get the kids to believe in themselves and to believe in the program that we're trying to grow.
And I'm just so fortunate to be able to coach a group of young guys that gave their heart, you know, they some of them would say, good game, do what was better meant for the team.
And we were able enough to pull this one out tonight.
Talk about surviving that flurry by La Grange there at the end.
Well, we knew that they was going to do a lot of dribble, drive, kick.
Some of us had some of the guys had a mental break down.
But, you know, you go through battles like that and everything that happened tonight.
We faced with all that, too, throughout the season.
We just told the kids, just keep the composure and just continue to defend it.
It was good and good things will happen to them.
Congratulations, Coach.
We've crowned them all.
Stu and Herb, Let's go home, turn our clocks forward.
An hour or so will be an hour closer to next year's state finals.
Well, thanks.
We're looking forward to next year as this one closes with a season of high school basketball again on GPB.
As you see Columbia celebrating as the last team crowned this year as the Triple A champs.
As always, thanks for being with us.
Let's think some of the folks who made this year's telecast possible, some of the great memorable moments from this year's tournament for this broadcast of the USA State basketball championships has been provided in part by Georgia's Electric Membership Corporation, lighting the way by the Georgia Student Finance Commission.
