And the Carver Tigers coming into the ballgame here in Macon with a record of 18 and nine.
Welcome back.
One last time championship game 11 of 11.
Over the last two days here in Georgia, Public Broadcasting.
Thanks for being a part of it with us, either on the television or on the Internet, on GPB, dawg.
This last game is a case of the two N's meeting in the Middle Glen Hills out of Augusta Carver, out of Columbus meeting here in the middle of the state in Macon Madness.
The guys who get to take us across the finish line still, Clyde Tennant and Herb White.
Gentlemen.
Hi, Jon.
Thanks very much.
Herb White Stew pie, 10:00.
Pleasure to wrap things up for this 28 high school basketball season.
What a matchup.
We've got two different teams, Glen Hills and this Carver team coming off.
A huge emotional win.
I guess number one down the way last night.
How will that affect it?
Well, that's what everybody's wondering, is do you never know?
You know, emotion plays so much of a part in these high school basketball championships and you win buzzer the buzzer.
I mean, Carver led that Dunwoody team who was ranked.
Everybody thought they were going to be here and they're not.
And we're going to see how that affects Carver.
I know the coach is a little worried about it.
Well, get ready for nonstop action.
Glen Hills has a big guy inside that can really puppet and get to the board.
Chris Reynolds six, four forward, 15 points a game 8.3.
He's a slasher and he'll take it to the rack and finish for you.
On the other side, you're going to see a very physical team get ready as we go down the lineup and you see Curry, Middleton, McLeod, Stephenson.
Reynolds, what do you notice about all of them?
All seniors, all played when they're sophomores, they've got some experience and that's now when we look at this other side of the team.
This is a physical team.
And when I say physical herb, I mean there are some football players on this team that like to knock year round underneath a couple of linebackers playing for this club.
And so we're looking for them to be real physical inside There you see Jarvis Jones, I think he's ranked number two linebacker in the state of Georgia as a junior, 18 points, eight rebounds and he blocks a couple shots a game.
So kind of that Boss Bailey mode, a great leaper like Boss Bailey and just a very physical basketball player.
And as we go down the starting lineup, there's also a couple of other guys that will be playing football come next year, namely Jarman Fortson, who will be a wide receiver for Florida State.
So get ready.
Not only you're going to see some block shots, I have a feeling you're just going to see some playing box or this court should be an entertaining game to finish things off for us in this 28 season.
What a game we have coming up.
As I mentioned, nonstop action from coast to coast.
Let's introduce you to tonight's starting lineups.
May I have your attention for the starting lineup?
First, for Glenn Hills at guard number three, a five foot nine senior Demetrius Curry at guard number four, a six foot senior, Reggie Middleton at guard number 24 and five foot ten.
Senior Jihad McCloud at forward number 22, a six foot four.
Senior Darryl Stephenson at forward number 23, a six foot four senior.
Chris Renaud and Carvers and Glen Hills head coach Richard Wallace.
And now for Carver at guard number five or six foot one, Junior Emilio Johnson at guard number ten, a six foot three senior German born son at guard number 12, a five foot nine senior Charles Martin.
At forward number 24, a six foot three junior, Marcell Hawkins at forward, a six foot four junior, Jarvis Jones and Carver is head coach worn Bill all stats Boys triple-A championship Glenn Hills and Carver coming your way right after this.
Let's get it started.

Welcome back to the Boys three day state championship.
These two teams, we're going baseline the baseline.
Our man on the baseline, Gerald Oliveira.
Gerald, what he got.
Hey so you mentioned the non action and that's because both teams like to push the tempo.
However, Korver likes to push it a little bit more than Glen Hill's.
I talked to Coach Wallace before the game and he's told his team to play hard and play smart.
But more importantly still, he wants his team to get on the glass because he knows that's the only way they're going to keep the pace at their liking.
Absolutely right.
So there you have it.
Take a look.
It is the Glen Hill Spartans in the Carolina Blue Carver in the White.
And let's get ready to go.
It is going to be a fast paced game.
Here we go, tip and welcome the boys triple-A finals here and making the final game of this 28 season.
Looking inside, man to man up with the jumper and then it is good.
Nicely done early.
But Charles Martin, a bit of a dick Barnett look and jump shot there with a kick of the legs do for some of you old timers may remember being your second corner starting in that zone.
Spartans looking to look inside.
Remember this is a team coming off a very big win over number one Dunwoody.
So let's see how they come out.
Let's see how they start.
Carver So far, starting well and active.
And I talked to Coach before the game and he said one of the main things he's going to put on his bulletin board, it's more about emotion tonight.
Really got it.
It's about physical play.
Here you'll see the officials for tonight's ballgame and they better be in shape early going from making turnover and spotting ball.
And Richard Wallace, one of those guys, he doesn't just tell you how to do it in practice.
He shows you pretty good.
Baller himself in his day in the Hall of Fame for Georgia, southern Illinois, that drafted, believe it or not, by the Boston Celtics in the sixth round and the San Diego County outdoors.
That's an end your family room Well the old NBA inside up and no good and who controls it will be carving early going Charles Martin controlling and getting it up.
There'll be an up and down game looking inside and one so Jarvis Jones has heard mentioned what a theme for their linebacker recruits in all of high school basketball replay and Jarvis Jones looks like he might have took a step before he put it on the floor.
But if you're going to foul him, you better grab him hard because he's going to finish.
If you don't really get him, he doesn't notice those little love taps.
And that was a play on words, one of the best high school linebackers in basketball and obviously football.
Your junior, you can see by that was a pretty good arm right there up and good and so far five nothing.
No Looks like residual effects from last night's big win over Dunwoody as Korver has come out fast just on the way from making glad you're with us And there's another steal recovered by the Spartans.
Let's see what they can do with that up and good.
That's a big hit to get you off the snide That's Reggie Middleton with the bucket Nice take by Middleton There you see that fast pace there Glen Hill is going to have to get back there playing man to man.
You got to get back and get somebody because Carver is going to bring it.
Even after a score.
Marcell Hawkins, a junior, will go to the foul line and shoot too.
Nice drive, nice body control.
There you see the replay.
You couldn't quite get it to go, but he'll be shooting a couple.
So Jones and Hawkins, only juniors.
They will be back next year.
good looking strokes from the free throw line so far about Carver.
There you see the leading scorer for this ballclub or second leading scorer, I should say, at 15 and a half second for no good.
Let's see if we have a violation and we do so we'll have one more.
Carver, Columbus.
I remember Fisher Leonard.
I think they won a championship in 71, one of the first seven footers to come out of Georgia.
You are right.
Played at Clemson.
I believe he did last time Carver won a championship.
1971 is heard mentioned in Blood.
Hill's never has taken home the school, the title.
So let's see what happens today.
Seven to cover up Carter in the Zone.
Here come the Spartans going against that one, two two working around the outside, Spartans 28 and two coming into this evening.
Goal Harrison Long three pointer.
Nice stroke for no good.
Carver controls the boards off and running.
This is what you can expect.
Pull up jumper.
No, that's good on that one.
And it's up and down.
It is going to be a track that the big guy looks like he can handle the ball.
Gerald Stephenson though, Martin saying he got hit on the wrist with that one came up short in the way he stroke that first one.
I wouldn't doubt somebody that got a piece of the ball or his arm there Spartans with some full court pressure.
Now let's see how Korver handles it.
Leo Johnson will be the man at the point Ball up looking inside Carver with some patience Nice fake but took one again a step This Glen Hill's team has some guys going to play on the next level Reggie Middleton is going on he'll be playing at USC Wilmington.
Chris Reynolds will be going to Campbell Reggie Middleton going Olympic.
So it's a good town on the side of the court.
Spartans, be patient.
look, even working around Marvin still remains in that zone looking for the open shot, looking for the three pulls trigger No good.
Gordon Carver so far dominating Herbie.
Those defensive boards.
Yeah.
One done for Glen Hill so far on their shots up and in and no contact, no foul.
And I'll tell you one thing about Jarvis Jones is so big and so strong that even when he gets hit, it doesn't look like he's getting fouled some time because he continues to go to the hole.
Yeah, he takes that body and just throws it into you.
But pretty good defense by Glen Hill's There Barber showing that 131 look look at around turnover there It looks like it's going to be an easy Nope nope let's see what we got back for Spartan say no we didn't touch it.
And Charles Martin showing some foot speed there.
But Hill's did a good job just knocking that away to keep him from getting the layup.
And he mentioned to you, by the way, that it feels like you would have to make great local programs like these high school basketball games possible and Gp-b to show your support, simply visit our website at WW W dot GPB George Backslash support.

We got prep sports, plus our year round high school show.
And we want to do a lot more high school sports do There's a lot of sports we're not able to cover so far.
Just need a little more funding.
And that's the folks out there that are paying attention right now.
They need to help us out with that.
W w w dot GPB dawg 24 seven.
You got it.
All right.
450 to go in this first quarter ball carver against Glen Hills and so far Korver showing no after shot to that big win over Dunn What he up alley oop No good here come the Spartans and they will push the ball looking for the break No numbers Let's see here we go good call right off and see who's knee that was, but it was certainly off.
But Demetrius Curry I guess Carver ten down Spartans still with that backcourt pressure, Johnson will be the one that's going to break it all night Adebayo Johnson Jr six one there he is and quickness and go into the hole and no good and sometimes in the press as we talk that's what you want Can they say that back to Johnson let's see what happens now he is fouled so Amelio Johnson will shoot to Amelio not afraid to take it down the middle.
Throw it up there.
He's got a couple of guys that can jump and go and get it.
And Fortson and Jarvis, Joe Jones, we saw Coach Wallace and he said before this game he is concerned about Carver and how physical they will be.
He thought that that was really a big part of the win over Dunwoody was the physicality of Carver and how they put Dunwoody out of their game.
And that can do it for you.
You're not used to guys shoving you just a little bit down there.
You know that your welts do.
They can just push you out of your comfort zone just a little bit.
So there you have it early going 7 to 2 in triple-A or 8 to 2 triple play action.
There you see it, Carver up early.
Sue Clark's had a curve wide bringing you all the action from right here in Macon.

Welcome back.
Carver up on Glen Hill's 8222 Collide technique in Herb White.
As always, it seems to be a tradition.
We like it.
We bring you the last game, the last final of this high school season so far.
If I ask you your biggest surprise of the state finals this year, what would it be?
Well, that's a good one.
You know, I think last night coming out of the box and one Fayette County coming out in that box and won a little bit of a gimmick defense.
But boy, it was a great effective defense.
Took Noel Johnson, a great player, completely out of his game and Columbia man is the three peat because of that that five eight game was terrific again a three time state championship.
It doesn't get much better than Georgia high school basketball Spartans working around looking for the three, getting the three nicely done by Reggie Middleton.
They need a little bit of that.
Carver has been packing that zone pretty tight so far on the attack, and this is what you're going to see in here come the Spartans have the numbers.
They'll try to press it, they'll try to run with it.
They'll take another three off.
And Carver controls Chris Brown's got a piece of that shot down on the other end a minute ago.
Gets up in the air pretty good at six for Sherman Fortson looking inside is the big guy trying to fake off his leg and a little too much razzle dazzle for Georgia Jones And the Spartans really take the ball with a shot through to tie this thing up and get within one up and down action.
Not a lot of scoring, but certainly a lot of running.
Bravo remains in that zone.
Defense Spartans trying to look inside.
It'll be nice pass there.
Here we go running it down and let's see if we can finish like up.
No Spartans control.
Nice dish.
Beautiful dish.
Glen Hill's with the finish.
And that was Gerald Stephenson, the big six for senior.
And I remember the old days when he used to hold up your finger one and two and call a play.
But this is running gun out.
A lot of freelancers, we like to say, well, when you got the athletes to do that, why not?
And both of these teams are loaded with athletes and we talk about the physicality of Carver.
But you take a look at Stephenson number 22 for Glen Hills and and Joe and Stephenson Reynolds Reynolds go into those guys are good looking athletes.
They don't look like they're the kind to back down from any kind of physical play.
Fortson Bringing the ball up, another big guy looking inside, both teams playing so little matchup.
Garver Trying to take the time, fade away and he will go to the line.
And Jarvis Jones maybe bailed out on that one.
Yeah, you don't want to hit somebody when they're fading away from the basket like that.
Very tough shot to make.
You just want to turn around.
He's not even going to go to the hoop for the rebound.
He can't.
He's fading away to saw Coach Wallace, 55 years old.
I talked to him and said, you know what, I probably could still fill it up some.
So I believe he said, how about a horse game, you and Coach Wallace, after we're done here?
Love to do it.
right.
Both coaches say, sure, they're a little uptight here.
This is a state finals role for the big one.
Well, I heard a guy that was an entertainer said he beat you in a game of horse last night after, you know, that kind of shot.
He was a comedian, of course, but I won't say anything about that.
Spartans throwing the ball up ten seven early going Korver up by three, Carver staying in that zone.
Glen Hill's working around trying to look inside, but able to pull the trigger on a three quarter active on that zone defense up and good and that's the way you beat it Nice shot but Curry Well they're going to have to get a little more active They've been packing it in and now Glen Hill's has hit a couple of three pointers in the last two or 3 minutes.
That'll loosen things up for him.
Garver attacking again plays with the rebound, always looking to run.
Even if they don't have the numbers, they will still push it up.
Attacking on defense.
Tough shot almost turned into an alley oop.
Here comes Carvel up and down we go just as we expected.
BARBER with the blocking foul there and draws Carlos Ross looking around saying what's it against me here What was it on here what happened.
Well just like on every charging call it's ever been called basketball.
Somebody feels like it was wrong.
I know I was on the wrong end of a lot of them were in that barber looking inside.
Both teams very active on defense and one of those unforced errors.
And Carver had a little trouble with the halfcourt offense the last two or three times down Glen Hill, picking it up on the aggressiveness down here, their man to man and affecting Carver just a little bit.
A couple more of those three pointers by Glen Hills and you're going to see Kris Reynolds and start to work some inside the Spartans bringing it up.
Korver still in that zone coming out just a little further as you mentioned Herb not that far with a three pointer no good Rudolph Barton's up then.
Nice throw shot Allen Only a junior six three gets the follow up who just checked into the game inside Korver to the hook That's how you do it and that is a nice finish by Jones He goes up strong and well he should and they're doing some bumper to bumper on the left.
Well you don't mind the first physical game Let's see the replay Nice dish right here.
Very nice dish and good finish.
As long as they're consistent, it's You're going to let them play rough.
Everybody knows it.
That's fine.
You know, the referee set the tone early and the kids adjust and that's the way you do it.
Tough shot there.
No shocker.
Spartans with a great hook by Sean Howard has hit a couple 1412 early going first quarter from here and they can play boys final great crowd as always that's great help on the defensive end right there Great great The turnover you can only front your man defensively if you get the offside help Andre White with that help and he could see it as Herb mentioned.
Look where they're picking him up now Carver way out on the zone defense and that'll open that middle up for some work Bravo with the rebound trying to push it everybody that gets it pushes it up was this NBA like we said three pointer he let them take it pass him with the jumper one point ballgame what we expected way outside again that's too long three pointers but the buzzer goes and the buzzer sounds up and down.
Action.
First quarter, just when we thought it would be one point game, stay there.
Second quarter coming right up.
In 1968, Dick Penick set out on a new adventure to live alone for one year in the Alaskan wilderness.

Boys triple-A State Championship Carver up on Glenn Hills 1514.
Let's go courtside to Gerald Olavario Hey Stu is heard mentioned.
Jarvis Jones was a linebacker this year, but actually he was a tight end the year before that.
He went to Coach McGee, told him that he wanted to hit somebody, so Coach McGee put him on the other side of the ball.
This year he had over 100 tackles on his way to leading the team to an undefeated season.
So that's pretty good.
100 tackles.
And I'll tell you what, he's got three or four knockdowns here, so he's taken over to bring up a good point to Herb.
In a game like this, it's harder to pull away.
Yeah, it's almost like an NBA game.
Most of those are close and it's going to be a game of runs because both teams like to get up and down the floor.
So teams are going to get a chance to get back in the ballgame.
And it's tough to pull away unless you're just shooting out of lights out.
Barber Extending that zone defense doesn't matter.
Three pointer still go up inside and fouled and the Spartans will go to the line.
So basically what we're saying is stay tuned fans, because this one ought to be exciting all the way to the final buzzer.
Chris Reynolds will shoot a couple.
You know what were talking about it.
They have the 24 second clock.
As we look at the shot inside and how the Spartans are getting in there and sometimes what you can do against his own if there was a ten second clock, it would have gone off in this game so far.
Well, a lot of people want to see a shot clock and high school basketball.
And, you know, there's arguments both ways.
What do you think?
I'd like to see it.
I wouldn't mind seeing them go 10 minutes quarter.
I think the kids of the athletes have much better condition these days, but we'll see all tied up in the second quarter of the three eight boys championship Carver against Grant Hill.
Grant Hill playing some good defense inside.
Karl At the outside there's one of those unforced errors and there's a turnover.
They've got number two to look up to the hoop left handed, stuck up there.
But going to the line will be Reggie Milton.
I know we've had a couple of games here last night that we learned Norcross game people would have stayed for 12, many quarters.
I mean, and Fayette County and Columbia the same way.
Great basketball games and there were other wins as well.
There always are shooting to go.
Yeah, every year we've said it we see the members of the of the generation and say they'll never be another player.
Maybe maybe they will.
It'll take a good 20 years to get here.
A little like that but but always great games both the good from the Lions and Grant Hill is up by a couple Spartans back on defense.
Carter Looking inside things have settled down a bit.
Yes the wall and nicely done soft rims here in the Macon Coliseum.
I've noticed that still get a lot of rolls off days.
Hawkins with the Hoop Harbor extends that defense.
You're talking to a guy that had a lot of iron on a lot of his shot.
He broke a few rent and it wasn't just on dunks.
Spartans starting to find holes in that zone.
Well, it's those long three pointers.
Open things up the one, three one spread out a little bit.
You're right.
They're finding some gaps now through Andre White to go to the line, shoot it to the senior.
Well, there's two ways to beat his own defense.
He can either shoot over it or you can go through the scenes and create get in the middle of the zone and collapse it and then dish and right now they shot over it and they're starting to get in the scenes.
Coaches will tell you the one thing that doesn't beat the zone is dribbling.
Exactly.
Pass it and shoot over.
But don't try to dribble through it.
1917 Len Hills up by two.
Also the year Herb was born, Spartans start to extend their defense.
Those long arms, they have numbers.
Let's see if they can get it out and we go back and forth.
Boy, there's some quickness out on this court.
Two or three steals.
Before we could take a breath.
Cabell Set it up, lay side, look good?
No good.
Spartans control Middleton going to the hole and nicely done.
Little to do looking long here we go.
This is what he's got to look.
He gets back with the block up.
That's great defensive hustle.
You take the ball, the hoop with a little floater in the lane and you get back on defense to block the shot on the other end.
Reggie Middleton, watch this.
Getting back playing center field.
Let's see if it was clean.
And that's tough to learn.
That's tough to do coming from behind.
Even if you get it clean, the officials are going to call that most of the time.
Wallace was going to the line first as good, good free throw shooting from both clubs and not wasting the opportunities at the straight second up second.
Good.
We've got a two point ballgame.
Spartans bringing it up, 6 minutes left in his second quarter.
It's been up and down.
Barber extended the defense that they had good hands.
That's going to go Carver's way and Gerald said Sean Hallam watch through the Jarvis Jones with a tie down and there you saw some good hands.
I have a feeling he's going to throw linebacker Tyler Carter taking the time to walk.
Well, he's probably a little small for a tight end.
They like those guys, you know, the six, six, six, seven range now even in college.
And he'd make a great linebacker with his size.
So again he's got that body Reminds me of Boss Bailey and everybody remembers him at UGA tremendous career turnovers just about even and the turnovers usually would turn team turns the ball over they turn it right back to the other team.
So really I don't think there's been too many points on those turnovers and Carver doing what I love coaches to do.
They're giving you different looks out of that zone.
One minute they'll come out and challenge you at half court.
Next time they'll drop back to the head of the key.
But I always coach and I always like to mix things up, never keep it.
Look at the same people get used to Robert trying to figure it out.
Going inside.
Tough shot Spartans control inside again.
Let's see what happens here.
And what's the body.
Not going to be a lot of freebies underneath.
There's nothing.
Everything's going to be contested on both ends of the floor.
That's the way it should be.
Stevenson going to the line this entire Glenn Close team seniors experience pretty good size for a 318 6464 Now front line talking about them good again extra special charity shooting and he expect that from good teams That's something I like to see Spartans now in a man to man that's kicking the ball and both teams sort of mixing it up on defense.
I like it too.
Yeah.
I don't care how good your defense is if you stay in one defense all the time with its man to man pressure, whether you got a great zone, if you don't change the look, a good offensive team and a good coach is going to figure out a way to start getting some shots.
After all, you just saw coach Richard Wallace is mixing it up a little too tall.
George Wall sits back down.
Is that man?
man, do I hate those turnovers?
All coaches do.
Carlos Ross unable to bring that one in and he'd had it been a tight indicates that one Spartans again taking their time bringing it up don't forget this is a real slow down game for this Carter team who scored 96 points last night.
Here they come on the break.
This is the low option.
Barnes had it wrong.
Fortson had that layup just blew right.
he's in favor using the banking boards, too.
Unless you're going to throw it down.
That's why it's there.
Carver keeps possession, but not for long.
They will throw it up quickly.
Here we go on the break.
They got something.
Need to see what happens.
Uphill.
Good karma with the ball.
They've got someone deep here.
We go back and forth.
I'm telling you, this is like calling a tennis match.
Well, that one went up and down the floor twice and nobody ever touched it.
This is what this movie do down there.
You see Coach?
Well, let's get some oxygen here showing what 416 to go Glen Hills up by four 2319 broadcast of this program is made possible in part by the Georgia High School Association, the GHC.
I would like to thank State Farm for their support of high school sports programing on GPB.
State Farm agents are proud of the achievements of Georgia's student athletes and would like to remind families and teens to always drive safely in your communities as you travel to work, school or play.
State Farm wants what you want safe driving for you and your family to play tennis and her wide.
Our pleasure to be bringing you three state boys High school Championship basketball.
Glen Hills up by four over Carver 23 to 19.
Early observations, maybe slowing it down.
Well, it's not going to happen And these teams are both they're mirror images of each other as far as I'm concerned, they're almost the same size.
You know, they've got the same quickness and they just play the same game.
And that's the way they play the game and that's the way they continue to do it.
Whoever cuts down on the turnovers is probably going to be able to pull this one out.
And if you're a coach, you're used to it.
You know you're going to have some turnovers, especially when you're playing with a team that can match up athletically with you.
Spartans with the ball going on for minutes in the second quarter.
Great crowd here and make it as usual to the horn.
that's what Reggie Middleton can do.
Get to the hoop and that's what happens.
You get you know you're a good basketball team, a very good team to get to the state finals.
You used to have in your way with a lot of teams.
And then also when you get to the finals and you matched up against somebody that's just like you and it's tough to find those gaps and go over and around people like you've been used to.
It.
Stephenson Getting inside for four.
He'll go to the line and shoot two.
Yeah, you're absolutely right.
And then I have a feeling that a big part of this shot, this game, is going to be who who gets the second shots.
Because when you run it on the break, you're taking tough shots like both of these teams do.
If you can get the board to get that second offensive rebound and put it in, you'll be ahead of the game.
Let's see who is ahead on the offensive rebound and who gets a second chance.
Well, I don't believe anybody's missed a free throw three.
The team, as far as I can remember.
Well, perfect timing.
Perfect timing.
The whammy, the Herb White whammy, 2419 Garver bringing the ball up gets the man and a hand by those Spartans Work it around Nice jump shot up and no good control by Carver We'll reset turnovers Spartans bringing it up There's another turnover back and forth we go Carter with numbers Let's see what happens here to the hoop way up high Nice rebound up And in Davos Jones showing strong with the script a strong hands an 18 points a game I believe he held up a chance for the first time I seen him play call there's a block and going by the recovers and here we go interception back and for the court that it it carried him halfway out of the Coliseum studio there is some zip on that one up and down just enjoy I mean we'll let you we'll call it for you but that would land at about 100 feet out onto the cone.
Guitarist Charles Martin just got back on the court.
He was chasing the ball, which was out in the parking lot.
Still Man to man by Glynn Hill jumper up and short Spartans control the boards and they're going to run with it again.
But hold on just a little cooler.
Heads prevail.
As Herb mentioned, carving a man for man sparks.
Look inside.
Nicely done.
Nicely finished by CARSEN.
McCloud is checked into the game number 24 with a nice rebound A moment to go and listen to the coach floated up and they got to out of that what I was starting to see both teams slow down.
I see guys holding up their hand.
I don't know if they're waving hello.
Are they actually going to call it a play?
But let's see what happens inside.
Gets the triple team to get in 11.
It be a little physical ball is out of bounds.
Well, I actually think the coach holds up a fist.
A moment ago he was saying one more pass like that and this is what you get.
Just kidding.
The referees realize that a game is going to be this.
is it going to just accordingly Portland.
Yeah.
They talk to other referees about the team they're going to be calling a lot of times they get a good heads up on what's coming Reggie Middleton fouled there Go to the line George Wallace up on the bench and let's go guys Chris Wallace played a little college ball as well Fresh bodies into the ball game.
A game like this, it's going to count if you can go to that bench and bring some folks in.
And Lawrence Bennett checks in for Glen Hill, then it was six six senior center Hello you saw also played college ball Both his guys like to run with it always have since they been at their respective schools.
Kids like to play in that program Second one up and good you're right this is the best foul shooting I've seen.
Maybe the whole tournament under 2 minutes to go this first half of the fourth triple A team championship man to man by the Spartans slow down a bit and temper with the crowd is waiting for a little explosion on both sides Tough shot up and from the other side Carter remains and has the ball and will bring a touchdown up against for Jones to go to the line.
He is strong.
Well that's the way you go up and catch the entry pass.
Nobody else could grab that one, just throw it up there and he goes up there with that left hand and snatches it merely Johnson He's got that dribble up around the shoulder and the referee's been watching him pretty close.
So he make it throw in a curtain call here.
In a minute, he'll be a performer to see that much.
Saw it called several times in college when I was calling UGA games.
This year, it's supposed to be a point of emphasis and I saw one three second call this year, believe it or not.
Johnson three points.
Korver keeps it up keeps it under Nice rebound.
Nicely done It was fortunate under the Leo Johnson and that's the usual call right away from the ball Well Reggie Middleton Amelio was right in his face and just little too much there Good call by the official Reggie Middleton a step to the left not happy with that kind of defense but you're right in front of the referee.
You getting right up in the guy's face.
He's going to call that nine at the time just to keep the game under control so something doesn't break out.
Middleton first is up and good.
When Robert Dunwoody upset the number one team three eight last night this car of a team at the second is good so Spartans both teams as Kirk mentioned good from the foul line as we went and wind down the second quarter of three basketball biggest lead we've had in the first half early on Yep the Spartans will look to slow down take that lead It is catch up down off the hole for one, but they'll look for something good.
I imagine.
Yes.
Looking underneath them there it was.
Nicely done.
And what do you do if you.
Carver, you're down eight.
You hold it for one here.
That's not their game.
But I don't think that it'll help.
I haven't seen, I have seen a possession go more than 15 seconds.
There it is.
Three up Spartans third control over the back.
Well just the whole thing was going ahead and shoot.
There's 26 seconds left.
I'll run another 15 seconds off the clock and go with ten.
Then you're not going to be down double digits.
Clint Hill scores here.
They get two free throws and then, you know, who knows what Carver is going to do.
But it's a big difference when you're down double digit.
Psychologically.
In my book, I'm not going to foul on Andre White, another one of those seniors off of this one.
Hill's to if you look at the numbers when we do at halftime you will see how huge foul shooting has been for the Spartans in the first half.
I remember one missed free throw.
The Spartans have been to the line good bit more than Carver has certainly went up and second went off.
He started trying to control and they do the 22 seconds.
Let's see if they hold here looking inside and Spartans in the man to man.
30 seconds to go in counting Carver.
Now I'm going to go for that last order so you would think up and no good Spartans might have a shot.
They got to get it up quickly.
They will get a shot at it.
Nicely done.
Nice feeling.
What's going to be the buzzer up and down as we follow the be and what a first half of action foul line has been important.
Rebounding has been important.
Lots of missed shots, lots of turnovers.
But here you go towards the end of the half, Watch this quickness here that's seen a lot of that in this ballgame.
And that's how we will end this first half.
Let's go to Gerald and talk to the coach about how he likes the first half and how it's going.
Coach Wallace Carver averages a lot of points.
How's your defense been able to hold them to such a low total?
Well, we just continue to work hard and hopefully we can contain them.
We've been trying to give that side help.
They are much stronger than us on the inside.
I feel like if we just can continue to play with them on the glass, we might be all right.
What adjustments do you want to make in the second half?
Well, one thing we need to do, we need to execute more.
I think we as long as we can control the game and execute, we'll be in good shape.
But if we start running up and down with them, then we might be in trouble.
All right.
Well, good luck in the second half, Coach.
Thank you.
Back over to you.
As to what did I first half of action.
We've had much more to come right here on GPP.
Stay with us, boys.

And welcome back.
Two boys, three state championship basketball from here on, Macon Gledhill leads at half 33 to 24 supply track and as always, my partner, Herb Whyte.
Our pleasure to be bringing you the final game of the high school playoffs here in Georgia for 2008.
Let's first get your early impressions of this ball game.
What we thought it would be up and down, turnovers all over the place.
Anything surprise?
You know, no surprises really.
You know, Glen Hills start off a little ragged.
Carver jumped out there, created some turnovers.
Glen Hill was not hitting from outside against that Carver Zone, was giving him some problems finally about, you know, the end of the first quarter, they started finding the range from three point distance.
Carver expanded that zone a little bit.
Glen Hill started getting inside, and now they really get an inside draw and some fouls and boy, they are knocking down the free throws.
Well, you look at the scoreboard, I mean 33 to 24, as you mentioned, in a game like this where it is a fast paced game, you're never out of the game because you have so many possessions, so many up and down plays in the ballgame.
Exactly.
And, you know, I think Carver not really been shooting the ball well from outside, but that's not their game.
They like to get up and down the floor, get in the paint to their two strong guy linebackers and let them take it to the glass.
But they've got to take care of the ball just a little better.
Glen Hill's was running up and down with them and you heard Coach Wallace.
We need to control it a little more.
We don't need to run up and down with them to get out of control.
We have to execute now.
Carver really loves to run, but execution.
I don't care if what you're doing, you got to execute even if you're running up and down.
Well, speaking of Carver, speaking of running, let's meet the guy that runs the actual school.
He is with Gerald.
Hi.
Thanks a lot, Stu.
I'm here with Yvette Martin, athletic director, as well as girls basketball coach.
First of all, let's talk about this game.
What's your assessment of the team playing the first half?
The team this first half, we came out very slow and now we have to play our game and not play heels game.
Be more aggressive on the board, then go ahead and do what we need to do to win a ballgame.
Some of those players are players on the football team and you had an outstanding season.
Talk about that.
Our football team won the state championship on triple Play and it was an awesome season.
We finished the season 15 in all and we have at least five of those players that are on the basketball team and we're expecting to go here to do what they need to do in order to win this game.
Also, what has the success of the football team meant to the community in a great deal?
As far as Columbus, Georgia, it brought Columbus, Georgia, quick.
Columbus, Georgia, back on the map.
And now so for George Washington Carver High School, he has made them understand that we're not only athletes, we are also students.
And our kids are excelling in the classroom as well as on the football field and on the basketball court.
Also, talk about the job of Coach Mueller.
He's done an excellent job to get the team here.
Just talk about him and our coach, Bill.
This time, he's a calm, clean but laidback coach.
He works hard and make sure that the boys understand what's on the line now.
Now, this will be the first title since I believe, 71.
What would it mean for the community if they wanted to do it?
I mean, it would be something that we both want today because that would mean kids of high school, right?
About Columbus not respecting George Washington Carver High School to bring it back to Columbus.
Okay.
Well, good luck in that second half.
And thank you for spending some time with me listening back over to Stu and get ready for the second half.
Well, I'll tell you what the coach looks like.
She could be a coach.
She knows what she's talking about, that's for sure.
Let's go to the first half highlights.
Both teams running up and down.
As we mentioned, inside play will be very important this game.
But certainly Carver had some easy hoops in the first half.
Carver did create some things early on with their fast breaking style of offense.
And here we'll see some of the highlights right here.
Inside play, outside play.
It might be the team that gets hot, heard from the outside, but mostly it's just been plays like this inside that's made the difference.
Yep.
Well, actually that was Jarvis Jones there.
And here are the Spartans who are trying to hit from the outside.
And I really think it's going to be those second shots just like that rematch that both teams going up and down shoot the ball up and there you go again.
Second shots inside, Jarvis Jones again.
And Shaun Allen a moment ago came in and got a couple of quick baskets for Glen Hills and it was the outside shooting or Glen Hill's really it didn't streak him out to the lead, but it opened up that zone again.
And here you see, that's why that zone was open like that, because Clint Hills, it hit a few jump shots prior to that.
Here you see the first half field goal attempts, number of field goals, almost identical, few more shots made by Glen Hill's in the field goal percentage three point field goals.
Nobody hit many one of each team.
Look at the free throw percentages.
Glen Hill's as I told you, really straight and Carver Well both teams combined for 11 two for 26 that's not bad very even on the glass turnovers very even so just the little differences this is the field goals made those three field goals difference in the ballgame basically.
All right.
So what a second half we have in store for you up and down basketball as we come to the final half of the 28 season here in Georgia.
We'll be right back.
3324.
Stay with us.
Black Hills is up.

Have you talked to him?
Welcome back to Boys three eight state championship basketball.
Glen Hills up on Carver 3324.
What will Carver do in the second half to change things around?
Let's go down to Gerald Ford.
Out like, Hey, hey, Stu, I'm here with Coach Bueller.
What do you plan to do in the second half to get the score more in your favor?
Well, right now, it's just like the guys of some reason we're a little flat.
So what we're going to try to do, we're going to try to maybe put in a little half court press to try to speed up the tempo a little bit, try to get them in before the game.
Right now, we just feel like we're in a Florida game.
All right.
Thanks a lot, coach, and good luck in second half.
Back over to you, Stu.
Well, there you have it.
Coaching guys are a little flat out did we missed something?
Was that because of that emotional win over daughter or not?
Well, that's very well could be And we talked about that before the ballgame and it'll be interesting to see if they go man to man and that pressure they're going to try to do half court.
They come out in some type of zone, but they we won't see it for a minute because they're going to have the ball on offense right here.
And Glen Hill says they yet the whole first half stays straight up man to man.
STU Here we go.
Second half underway, third quarter boys, three eight championship carbo with the ball up and let's see if they'll call it a shoot a foul Jarvis Jones be going the line I don't know he won't get fouled prior the shot so Marcell Hawkins won't go to the line to trigger it in the alley.
Johnson just underway third quarter.
Good to have you with us.
Another exciting game.
It looks like Korver trying to go inside and it's a good idea.
Jones with the hoop but bringing it up let's see Coach said he put a little more pressure on Carver picking up a little higher.
There's the interception.
That's what he's looking for and this is going to carve his way to start this second half.
Look at around Spartans as a whole.
Yep, Got it back into it defensively and Carver looks like they come out a little more aggressive.
But what Carver's got to do when they create a turnover, a lot of times in that first half they create a turnover, turn the ball right back over trying to play too fast.
You want a cut, you want to capitalize on those turnovers, get good shot.
And so far Spartans have found a couple of times early and you don't want to follow a team a whole lot to shoot nine out of 11 from the free throw line.
As we mentioned, both teams have only missed two shots each, so you don't want to get in foul trouble if you're either Team Stephenson A little more size checks in for the Spartans.
3326 Herb White supply tenant three championship best basketball here in making Korver looking a little more patient a little more deliberate to start this second half Well that was a nice shot by the block and all of a sudden Herb 3328 Spartans Garver in a ballgame by picking up a little higher will more pressure try to attack it?
Nice move and nicely done.
Tempos has slowed down just a bit trouble with the ball well on a side looking inside and got Yeah let's see which way have to go Spartans way back to Middleton had a nice first half He inbounds and gets the ball back He runs the show for the Spartans and look at that defense as the camera pans and how high caliber is Martin out here actually picking up beyond half court so that's the 131.
That's the kind of shot you try to give them to take when you're in that turnover has the numbers up and no good rebound.
It's tough.
They're going to call traveling on him and what an athletic move by Jarvis Jones taking that to the basket couldn't get it to go down but man he hung in the air.
Martin had the rebound and just tough to stand up and grab it.
The old guy had it.
So time out.
Let's talk things up.
Garver's come out much more aggressive, a little more patient on offense.
Well, they picked up a couple.
They got the lead down from 9 to 7, but this is the way they're going to be able to do it, create a turnover, come down and get a good shot, which they did.
Then they didn't get the shot.
The fall had a little tough luck on the walking call, but you can see both teams are going to try to play a little smarter basketball.
This half we've got even when you're running it, you have a fast paced game.
Like you say, turnovers are inherent to the game, but when you turn it over on a turnover, that's really what gets coaches because that's your opportunity to score.
Normally you have numbers and both teams have had that advantage and haven't taken advantage of the first half.
Exactly.
And Coach Wallace trying to make an adjustment against this halfcourt trap that he saw, threw the ball away and took a bad shot.
Two possessions.
So let's see what they come up with against this zone trap then Middleton controlling things when they're much more aggressive coaches will tell you pick it up on defense that'll help that helps your offense if you get more aggressive on defense and it's not actually a trap.
They're not really trapping.
He's got the point, man, putting pressure.
But the wing men are not coming up to trap.
They just play in the passing lanes, which is also another way you can play that 131 makes the team use up a lot of clock Spartans looking inside again so you see Mark but the point there's another turnover.
Yep exactly what you said.
Johnson played that perfectly They made the man who was going to pass.
He played the passing lane.
He picked it up.
Smart play, Carter with it.
Another chance to cut this lead to the hoop.
Doesn't get the roller, doesn't?
Yes, he does.
Nicely done.
It All set.
We got ourselves a five point ballgame.
Leo Johnson with the hoop.
And there you see the turnovers.
Now there have been plenty sparks on the attack.
It's the rebound.
It's the big guy, Jed Jones controlling.
Nice drive by Middleton Just left it a little short.
And I'll tell you what, we're not seeing the first half.
We seen a we saw a few three pointers jacked up and maybe some four shots.
And both teams have gotten control of that.
Well, both teams were one for five and one three respectively, I think from three point distance.
And it's not really their game.
They'll take it if they're hot, but right now they're not.
Well, as we say, as we speak, another three pointer and let's see which way it goes.
Carver's ball 456 to go five point ball game Glen Hill's up by five but Korver making comeback and they've got it the way they want to get it Well it makes sense still twice now I think we said nobody's going to pull away in this game, not the way this game flows on it.
And you look at when Hill's is gone with his own defense, Julio Johnson Try to make something happen for the top.
And here the Spartans have the advantage going up.
Boy, it fell out of the play was McCloud.
So he will shoot to went down hard, but he's okay.
Here we go.
Nothing wrong with hitting the guy hard as long as you're up in there with him.
And as we talked about changing defenses, you saw Glen Hill's come down, change your defense.
What happened?
Create a turnover right away.
And that's what you try to do when you change defenses up.
Give them a little different look.
And a lot of times a team will turn it over the first time down the floor, allowed to shoot to foul shooting.
Exceptional in the first half, 22 for 26.
We said goodbye for both teams.
There you saw Charles Martin checking in.
One guy has been patrolling that circle it up first and second, what is good?
So just about halfway through this third quarter, Bled Hills holds on 36 to 30.
Much more action coming up on GPB right after this broadcast of this program is made possible in part by the Georgia High School Association, the GHC.
We'd like to thank Dodge for their support of high school sports programing on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Dodge dealerships across Georgia are happy to help bring you the exciting action of GHC, a championship football Dodge salutes the hard work, community spirit and dedication of these two fine teens.
Dodge hopes you enjoy the game.
And we are back with the boys triple-A State championship game here and make it a little chess match going on right now, Yeah.
We're starting to see the coaches make a few moves here.
As we mentioned, Carver started extending that zone defense out, pass half court, went to the 131 play in the passing lanes, created a couple turnovers.
Glen Hills Coach Wallace says okay, we can do the same thing So he he'd been playing man to man the whole game He throws it with two three zone look in there creates a turnover his team so we'll keep an eye on what's going on.
Spartans look like they're going three quarters.
Yep.
With a1131.
That's the first time we've seen this look from the Spartans.
So coaches starting to earn that money mixing it up.
Looks like Spartans wanted the trap, but they did get it to the big guy in the middle.
That's what you try to do on presses though.
Hold it back.
Spartans control and they want to run when they get back.
And Sean Adams logging some good minutes for the Spartans tonight off the bench inside Nice look Nice finish John Allen.
I can spot a rising star.
It's a pleasure to outscore the Spartans.
What might have held up.
But why not take it and roll it over the chest?
Great.
Hustle.
Play.
He's okay.
Jumped all the way over the bench.
Chris Reynolds was Reynolds I didn't even see.
Is he back?
Yep.
Yep.
Hey, Garver.
Attacking.
Good call.
Start to get a little more up and down down like it was the first half.
Well, as high as Chris Reynolds has gone to the basket a couple times.
A little thing like a folding chair is not going to bother him.
It's like jumping up on the curb for you.
And I GABA now.
Looks like you're going against his own.
And there is some context.
Jones will go to the line and he'll shoot two and Jones does not go straight up with that ball.
You see him every time he leans in with that body, Stu and quite often he draws the foul, not afraid to take the punishment.
That's for sure.
Just joining us, Jones six four, one of the best linebackers football players in the state, only a junior.
So he'll be coming back though for the football team and the basketball team and if you're going out the guard to guard him, you know that's not what you want to hear.
The guy went from tight end to linebacker because he wants to hit people.
Second one no good.
His ball.
It'll be Carter's driver to pull the trigger.
They have the big one of the big upsets in this tournament so far up and no good Spartans control Middleton looks long there is that turnover four out of bounds Yep nothing to be gained by that pass.
He needs to complete it.
Carver was back defensively so hold that one up.
That's Wallace directing traffic now against the zone both teams using changing defenses Spartans trying to take the time try to find a hole in that zone Barber aggressive inside one worked out hard.
that's good.
Patience by Glynn Hill's that time for five six passes around the perimeter made the interior pass got rewarded for it Stephenson will shoot one try to complete that three pointer.
He's a big kid.
Yep six four must go about 215 second and good.
So all of a sudden, if we got a ten point game.
Yeah, it's a nine point game at halftime.
So Glen Hills is recovered Korver attacking looking inside half the great guy he's double team triple team now four shoots it up and Spartans all over the basketball trying to run looking down and they have possession Jarvis Jones trying some tough shots in that middle now being double and triple teamed and some players a little bit taller and very athletic.
So Carter will take a timeout, talk about things that all of a sudden became a ten point game, mostly because of those turnovers and most of it maybe because of the shot.
Yeah.
But if you're if you're his teammate, you're going to go up to him and tell him it's not a good shot.
Shoot.
No, no.
I think play by play, I'm not going to go up and tell exciting games, exciting high school basketball this season.
Again, both girls and boys.
It's to call attention to her by finishing things off with the boys.
Triple A high school championship from here in Macon.
I got to notice it.
It was the first game that I did in the Gwinnett Center last night.
Two beautiful facilities head, terrific Macon, equally a great host here.
And high school basketball thrives in both areas.
Well, it's a great idea by the high school association to work it out on it.
It made sense you get in a triple of eight teams, a lot of teams from middle Georgia and South Georgia coming up to make it, not having to make that trip all the way to Atlanta.
And of course, most of the teams in Gwinnett in DeKalb County playing in that Gwinnett Arena, nice, normal pass escort.
And then good job goaltending.
I got called plenty for it.
I know that one.
So now a 12 point game as the Spartans start extending their lead and extending their defense There you see it can't touch that ball once it's up on.
The backboard and high school basketball Jones with the finish up and down to go Spartans with the ten point lead with 245 to go with this third quarter watching it around with some patience both teams very aggressive on the defensive end turnover in the numbers three on one let's see if they can and they do Carver making a nice little comeback nice things for two classic three on one break they're handling it perfectly with the ball in the middle places quick the Spartans put it back out to the shoot.
That's where you want it.
Get inside easy layups.
Jones With the rebound and Carver pushing the issue that shot Spartans rebound and now being run with the ball they have some number three all to go up and a blocking foul.
And again it will be Stephenson going to the line Jihad McCloud with a little flip pass really nicely done the fast break here those kids they're not there the team is shy to go to the hole I mean, they'll take it strong.
Nice Jarell Stephenson And why not go to the hole and get the fouls when he's making all those free throws?
I'm really really this is the best free throw shooting I've seen in several years by two teams in the championship game.
And every time I say something about it, somebody missed twice.
You've got to challenge with the rebound here.
Come Carver, try to find a rhythm three pointer for long distance.
And there you go for little Charles Martin.
There have been a lot of outside shots, certainly three pointers here tonight.
But that was a big game.
Got 130 left in the third quarter.
Wow.
Both teams trying to play with the way outside.
That one hurts when you get it.
Three cut it, the six as low as it's been in a while and then heals, comes back and knocks it back out.
Tonight again rebounded by the Spartans.
Carter Nicely done.
Jarvis Jones will go to the line with a lot of activity by Carver a lot of pressure and well, you know, they'd like to get this thing down to about five or six, but you come out there and you play as hard as you can and the score doesn't change.
That can really be for us.
The pressure was put up and no good again has heard talk about great foul shooting.
We put the proverbial lid on the foul line.
Wrong for the second and it's in Middleton bringing things up looking at all the crowd back to Middleton was good pressure turnover here we go.
This is what we saw in the first half.
But it's all over the ground and it'll do Carver's ball well there.
It was a little bit out of control again, you get that turnover, pick it up, look around, don't just start dribbling in and turn the ball back over.
They got a break there and got back.
We're going to have a timeout just the 20 seconds.
And I think they're going to talk about that very thing.
Once you get control of the ball now every possession becomes that much more important as this game wears on.
You can't throw it and, turn it back around.
And I think that's what Coach is talking about.
Yeah, you you waste so much energy, you use so much energy trying to create the turnover and then you turn it right back over and it just you as a coach, I guarantee you.
Let me remind you this April, don't miss the gripping true life story of the men and women of the aircraft carrier Nimitz, Patriotism, love and the rites of passage.
One of the most powerful naval ships.
Don't miss Carrier beginning April 27th.
If you could only see it, of course, on GPP.
And if you notice, watching the ball games, Kerry will be in high def, just like everything else.
On Georgia Public Broadcasting High definition.
Yes, sir.
As a kid, the time you got to high def television at home, I think one of the TV's probably one of the kid's rooms is high def.
They get the one.
I tell you, haven't lived here.
You've seen yourself on high def television, which we've seen.
Pretty scary for the fans.
That's why they don't put us on.
So we're all high def right now.
Well, luckily they can't see us.
thank goodness.
Yeah.
High def has all ruined a lot of anchor careers over the last few years.
47, 39, about a minute to go in this three day championship from Macon Carver of the big upset win over Dunwoody Spartans have had a sensational season and this game has not disappointed.
MARTIN Now sports in control.
BARBER Looking inside Spartans with the zone defense and I dare I say they go for one tip that it'll be Carver's ball.
I doubt it.
Well, I think Coach Zullo had given them a certain look that they wanted to look for, and they were kept trying to look and see if they were going to get that play out of it.
And they just couldn't do it right then against the zone.
So checking it is Andre White drills.
Stephenson will take a well-deserved blow cover looking inside try to lob it, go get it.
Let's see where we go.
Up to the hole no great Spartans try to control and it will be Carver's ball.
Another strong move in the paint Carver with a little bit of unfortunate bounce couldn't get it to go looking for Jones inside and the Spartans control Nice work out Andre White Nice pickup on the steal there for Clint Hill.
You heard someone say one but I think it was a fan fortune and that'll be the fourth foul on Carver the Spartans inbound with just 20 seconds left in this third quarter.
Let's see where they go.
Middleton with the ball under control.
Maybe will go for the last shot.
Let's say Middleton back with that long three pointer and Carver has it.
They have to break it.
Here is an easy hoop and not because he's a coach with a temper in a world run by that man.
Again, we've been talking about Jones, another turnover.
Let's see if it goes home close.
So up and down action and what was the difference at halftime Down now it is just six 4741 the last quarter of high school basketball all coming your way, boys.

Herb Whites String Quartet from Macon Boys triple-A State Championship Game Bled Hills by six.
And I'll tell you what, if this Carver team wants to come back here, now's the time to cut out the turnovers.
Got to cut out the turnovers and try to create pressure without fouling.
There's Glen Hill's team because they're going to knock them down.
They get to the charity straight.
Well, it's in control.
Barber with the pressure and it works.
And they are running and see where they go, slowing it down just a bit.
Jumpers up jumper no good And guess who thought the rebound puts it back is Jarvis Jones.
How will they put this puzzle game straight play by Jarvis Jones Korver aggressive but he's not slowing it down It might have gone either way but Korver caught for moving in.
We've got to be five team fouls on Carver now he's going to be in coach trying to convince him it's a shooting foul, but the rest will go.
And it was an Spartans two inbound and that's 14 fouls on Jarvis Jones and they don't want out of this ballgame denial that close to being back court but Spartans control slowing it down just a bit wearing the clock down just a bit Spartans to find a hole in that zone.
And they do easy work, easy miss back and good Follow those second shots by Reynolds.
That's a big follow for Reynolds there after we missed easy layup Got the tip to go 7 minutes left.
Who will win the triple M championship?
Got to reach in maybe three more.
Here's another one for fast Gerald Stephenson.
So now fouls becoming a big part of this game for a couple of big guys.
Coach Wallace is going to take Gerald Stephenson out, probably going to try to get him back in maybe 4 minutes to go in the ballgame.
He needs a big horse in there to get it off the boards for him.
Andre White checking in on Julio Johnson at the line.
He's a junior six one.
We'll be back that year.
Of course, all three of those big now not sure that I don't even think they call it art.
So Spartans will inbound the ball.
Korver will put some three quarter court pressure on Middleton to bring it out and, looking for a little help starting to 16 for 20 and 12 for 16 for Carver.
Still good free throw shooting very strong.
Clint Hill's getting to the line a little more though, so that was a nice shot.
It was a nice finish by Allen shot.
Allen has really played well in the minutes he's gotten for Glynn Hill's decision season opener.
So he again, this was too much, but he got him back in and a lot of the Carver fans thought that was, well, they got the foul out of it.
But Reynolds got the look like could have been a block cross, wasn't going to lie.
Let's take a look now.
He got somebody got him.
That's such a good call, Ross.
Up and down.
Yeah.
Don't go anywhere.
Just going to get the feeling that this is going to come down to his last few possessions.
It's still good.
Brown Shooting softly.
Dunn, 5145.
Glen Hill has maintained his lead.
Nelson will bring it up against the pressure goes and looks at the middle court back looking for that good shot inside trouble with the aggressive defense.
There's a guy again starting to get the easy route to John and again inside and they are working the ball that's Barnes doing a good job against that pressure excellent patience one more time at 131 susceptible as to keep fast and somebody is going to sneak in and get a good look.
I needed to be the one guy no matter what the point of the baseline.
That's the guys you work on because they have to cover the most territory for the kid's possession.
For a little while, Johnson will run the longest, stays on you stay on offense is going 131 especially that kind of desperate pressure you're going to find an open shot if they don't get the turnover.
what do they have trouble?
Carlos Ross can't believe it.
Got to be careful.
Don't get too demonstrative.
Can't draw t now a lot of time left.
Eight point lead that's galore shouting instructions trying to get his guys back in this game there's Middleton controlling and letting little guy at the reach in Mario Johnson up in fouls beginning to take a touch Billy that's six now it's not seven and in a short time it's going to come down to a foul shooting contest play that's five for Emilio Johnson.
So going to have to take a seat.
The junior guard from Carver High School, who's the guy that controls them, the big guy, will come back in for Carver and he's got four, I believe Jarvis Jones got a ride him now, don't you?
Yes, sir.
Middleton to the line.
Senior five Senior starting for this one Those team for the season both have had 28 and two controls came into this championship game Will they be 29 and two and look for Gerald Stephenson to get back into the game for too long for the win of Big fella sitting over there on the bench inside Nice look yes he not that time again Allen has it Yeah now it up one more time No good Carver controls what an opportunity that would have been.
Make the most of it.
Carver looking inside as well, trying to take the time, looking for that good shot to the hoop.
nice drive and nothing fall through the two deep down there.
Jarvis Jones six point game with just about 5 minutes left and they're getting a little careless.
Middleton has got to watch for 10 seconds.
Go here.
that's a lower body block.
Well, the coach was looking for it as well, saying let him come on.
That was attack as a body block.
But it's open and here comes Gerald Stephenson back in the game, knew they're going to get that voice back in there Carver getting a couple of offensive rebounds if he wants his big man back in to claim the defensive boards.
Well, cut it out to help out back to Barton.
He's taking more time looking for a good shot.
Carter all over the place, dropping to the bucket.
Let's see what's left of Stephenson with the charge.
Well, sir, every call is great down the stretch.
well, you got to keep looking to score.
You don't want to take your team completely out of their offense because it's only a six point ballgame.
If he you know, if you just put it in the freezer, you will not score another point The rest of the game, especially with teams that like to run, you don't want to take them out of their rhythm.
This is what they're used to doing.
It's almost like going to prevent defense when your defense is playing well in football, what happens?
Get a lot of passes underneath and all of a sudden you're in trouble.
Well, that might have been five four drill Stephenson is back out of the ballgame.
Carter looking inside to the baseline.
No way to go foot on the baseline A little Spartans ball Fortson outside given the politicking say hey they beat me up a little watch it ref That's why they put the line on the floor spot working it up against this trapping Carter defense.
Let's see who had the foul.
Looks like it would be on.
Fortson Well, I think it's a little early to start fouling.
You know, every time down the floor I go for the steal.
You still got four and a half minutes.
It's a two possession game.
You think that one was intentional?
I don't think it was intentional.
But he didn't have the foul.
He had nothing to gain from that foul.
And I think he just want to play tough, see if he can create create the turnover.
I'm telling you, Glen Hills, the stroke of that ball off the line, you hurt yourself and you called him that.
Well, until I open my mouth about it, that's three times.
But they get the rebound and he controls him.
He'll try to take advantage of the rebound off the foul shot, looking underneath all there again.
And that's what he's been doing for exactly this.
ALLEN Over the back door is that knee that's at least eight points this second half, just simple little layups, backdoor plays, Carver now down by eight big points and Carver Glen Hill's back man to man they change that defense again.
Another good news way outside Allen with the rebound and all those things away little contact with the and now each and every possession even in a fast quick pace game becomes huge Burton will control back in the ball game for the Spartans Nice move inside and almost a three point play now everybody Well there's glad Hill's team is finding that cruise Andre way to go to the line shooting too.
Yeah they found a hole down there on that left block for sure.
Somebody is not covering against the pressure.
They're not getting back.
Time out, Carver Barber will talk about it mostly, I would think, on the defensive end of getting back and not giving up.
So, so many easy layups.
I think Carver panicked a little early.
Four and a half.
They started fouling a little too much and took a bad shot down here on the other end, a little bit of a force three pointer.
So, you know, it's tough not to panic when you're in a state championship game, you look up and you're down with four seven to go.
Well, they remind you that Thursday nights are going to be kind of special at 7:30 p.m. That's Georgia's longest running high school sports and academics program.
It's called Prep Sports.
Plus, you'll meet some of the Georgia's most successful student athletes athletic programs and much, much more.
That's prep sports.
Plus it happens Thursday night at 730 exclusively on g P. These guys got some great program.
Yes, we do.
And of course, we're you know, we are not critical of these young men as as people.
And, you know, I try not to get too critical as far as the basketball goes.
These are high school players.
Sure.
But still, you want to call the game like you see it.
And if you see a shot that's maybe ill advised or or a team starting to foul and they shouldn't, you got to point that out.
And, you know, there's a lot of folks out there watching the young people watching that, trying to learn something about the ball game, still a ball game with 349 left in the open, eight point game in the way this game has been up and down, a couple of easy laughs, a couple of turnovers and there's car team is right back in it White to the line six to senior Willy shooting to and let me say this team has been sensational at the foul we both got the magic touch after landing on the ball the second one for Mr. White and he makes it nine point game.
Was it half when Hill's full court man to man pressure still keep the pressure on.
I like it.
Carter tried to look inside good defense by his block and.
That was a foul And Mr. Fortson will go to the line.
Yeah, I was about to point out.
I thought that was excellent defense.
You know, they've allowed a lot of contact today.
They did make that call.
But I agree with that play.
Glynn Hill's playing full court press.
You're trying to make Carver run a little clock up there.
They weren't reaching in, but got him with the body for no good looks.
Some teams just ask foul shots in the first three quarters and then foul shots at the end of the game.
There's a big difference in percentages.
Nicely done by Fortson.
For the second one, they are the Spartans with the ball rolling it out for the McLeod.
He will break the pressure.
At least try.
There's a foul man to man pressure.
Now they've come out of that zone trap and it just don't need to be reaching in and create that.
And obviously we talked about it.
It's going to come down to the line.
I mean, we were talking about this up and down and the turnovers and it's physical.
So we knew that both teams are going to have to hit for the line.
Well, they're going be in the automatic two point shooting that we're not there yet, but they're close crowd at the line and still a one and one Carver controlled far from being over with 225 left in this game excuse with 325 left in this game Went to the hoop Nice move up in in left handed.
That's the way you do it for Hawkins.
Herb, hold on, Buckle up.
We've got a game.
Middleton trying to break that pressure.
Almost a steal just showing that quickness and he's coming right at me So I was telling you right in front of it, I know how those kids look on the football field when they see him.
Come on.
Pretty scary.
That's a big kid.
All in control over the backcourt.
Needs a little help.
There it is.
Is the turnover here?
They gave the chance.
Give themselves a chance that didn't foul.
Just play good pressure defense here The turnover come down and get a good look now it's still just a two possession game.
Still far from over Carver with a long three pointer now Good And the Spartans controls and that fourth turnover as we mentioned snap it all night Look who's down Who has the hoop knocked off his body going to the foul line Good rebound by Hopkins again Armstrong fouled by the other 24 Jarred McLeod got up under Hopkins and a couple of big free throws coming up here once again which the rebound Great position went up strong Hopkins a tough customer to that rec averaging just over 15 points a game this year for those Tigers came in on right course it's easy to be a tough customer when you got a couple of all state linebackers on each side of that they're all big from here and then Hopkins with it another Stephenson out, McCloud out.
That's the foul situation for Clint Hill.
Now setting it up and good 5651 Spartans up by a by a slim five and here's another foul Corey just killing themselves You got to give yourself a chance to come up with a steal or or even let Glen Hill's miss a miss a field goal attempt.
You're going to put them on the line all night.
Glen Hills is usually going to hit at least one of the two.
I think that's what Coach Burrell was saying.
Fortson with another foul and what was turning out to be an up and down game now is becoming a fashion contest.
Well, that's certainly not what Carver needs group Glen Hills to go the free throw shooting team to be trading free throws or even trading baskets for their two free throw attempts.
Reggie Middleton for the long strokes, the first one with a lot of confidence Carver Johnson and force out and Jones one more foul he will be disqualified both Foul shots are good and that's her matchup.
This is not a team you want to foul over now might have to think about bringing that ball up quickly when Mills drops back in now they're in a one, two two.
They have changed three or four different defenses and I love it that effective and all out of ground possession, Harrell will be going Carver's way So good defense by the Spartans.
Well they didn't get the turnover but come closer.
Got one.
Every time they've changed that defensive look.
When Carver comes in, they've done a nice job with that and it has mixed up.
Carter showed him three different kinds of zones and man to man they have a timeout by Carver, discuss some strategy and how to attack those changing defenses.
Well, was a coach that believed in using every arrow in your quiver.
You know you got to use everything, especially in a championship game.
Don't want to leave something behind.
Say, man, I wish I had a try, especially in a championship game.
6851 Glenn Hills Up or Carver by seven.
What do we expect down the stretch for fouling?
Well won't be too long and out the lead stays like this that Carver is going to be forced to start fouling.
But they probably got another minute.
You know, you get it down around the minute mark, you're going to start foul.
But I'd go another minute and a half.
Just try to play good defense, See if you can get Glen Hill's to turn it over and see if they'll take a shot and miss it gets a rebound.
So Glenn is kept on shooting the ball.
They haven't stopped, put it in the freezer.
So that that's one thing We haven't had a lack of mats, turnover.
So you get back in this game even what 230 or 229 left in the ballgame.
Carver had the ball underneath going against now a man to man defense after Lindsey basket for Jones and that's the way you do it quickly systems don't make tough defense here if he can get it turnovers and get them he has to shoot the ball foul there try to tie him up try to double team Middleton but Middleton will go back to the line.
Yeah you're better off right there.
Just backing off a little bit.
It's going to be a tough pass to get out of that double team.
Instead, Middleton's going to go to the line and he's made his share of night there.
I imagine Glen Hills is probably approaching 35 free throws for the ball game.
I think you're right.
And if you wondered about our stats, we really don't have a, you know, a stat monitor in front of us.
So we have to guess quite often about what's going on.
As far as the total stats, 15 points for Middleton, six point game with, just about 2 minutes left in this three state championship final in the final game of the 2008 Georgia high school basketball season.
And it has been a very competitive game.
Probably try to look inside.
Got to look quickly now at this point.
Again, turnover there.
But no, it gets it back.
Long long three pointer who controls Helm?
Well he does a little bit of trouble looking for help, but he gets it.
It's a tribute to that.
Glen Hill's defense.
That calm has got to take a 35 foot jump shot.
Middleton controlling, still going to the hoop, not pulling it back.
They got to inside miss it and try to get him who's got possession all over the floor.
I think we got a touch responded Well, there is a good point.
Carver has been fouling and fouling.
Glen Hill's is going to take the ball and keep on shooting it.
So let them shoot, try to get the rebound and Carver can score here, either two or three.
We still got ourselves a really good ball game.
Big time ballgame 5953 with 125 left and Carver with possession.
I just say forget the three, just go inside.
It's been working.
We score here.
I tell my guys, let's put some real pressure on them but don't foul here, let it go another 2530 seconds.
Because if he if you get it to you down four, you get a three, you're down three.
Good time to look at all the state champs, Southwest, the cab.
I saw those girls play.
They were terrific is it fair county just losing to Colombia all great seasons for both winners and I don't like to say losers, but how about finalist teams in a winner?
There you go.
Three A what?
A game.
Norcross, We're calling it a dynasty.
And, well, they should with three straight, maybe the most fun game I've ever called every day a winner, girls, a state championship.
Just a terrific year for girls and boys.
High school basketball in the state.
Once again at our to bring it to you.
All right.
Let's see what Carver can come up with here on a big possession, looking inside, bouncing it outside.
That's Barton to give this.
they've got a good luck.
They've got a lay up.
And that's the way to do it.
As Carlos Goss finishes and we have got a four point game with nearly a turnover.
And there it is.
It is a turnover.
No foul.
Good play.
Now get another good shot credit to two or cut it to one with a three.
We had a feeling it was going to come down to the final few seconds that it has Carver taken the time and looking inside for the baseline and the possession.
What a game.
With just about a minute to go the possession of the game for Carver, this is grinding the inside, looking inside.
That's spot.
And what do we got?
An offensive foul runaway play right there by Middleton and Hawkins Can't believe it.
He said.
I've been making the same move all night.
Ref Nonetheless again, play tough defense don't need to foul go about 1520 seconds try to get a steal or when hills may not throw a shot up on this possession Let's say that Allen pushed and he will go to the foul line 49 seconds to go 5955 and that's going to be six on Jarvis Jones.
That's five on him.
Yes, sir, it is.
And he is gone for the night Coach telling me this guy had to put those hands up coach below doing a little coaching right to the end.
He's only a junior.
Only a junior.
And I tell him sometimes easier said than done.
And you know, it could be a stereo type here.
But, you know, football players, at least the ones that I played with and play to get it, let's be honest about it.
They're more aggressive than your usual basketball player.
Yep.
And I think Carver's aggressiveness, if they end up on the short end of this score tonight, is going to be because of that aggressiveness.
You know, you got to channel that aggressiveness.
You got to be smart with it and wait way too many fouls in the back court when you didn't really have to do it because again, Glenn Hills was going to come down and they were going to keep shooting that ball.
That's their game.
They slowed it down a little bit, but they didn't they didn't run much clock before they got a shot up.
So a little over anxiousness on Carver and probably hit the panic button a little too soon.
Spartans looking for Tigers, looking for their first title since 71 as Gledhill State has never won a boys State title just outside of August 520 there and I spent some time out in the Glen Hills suburb.
That's what I've good this good looking junior Shaun out who's been huge and getting nice backdoor layups and now from the foul line made smart plays all night long And another thing Carver probably has run up against the team shooting free throws as well as Glen who has had a night so they've had to pay for Carver, try to make something happen.
Now they have to push the ball in.
There is one of those unforced errors.
Well, still it was only a two possession game and it still is.
But look for the quick foul, the steal.
And then I found out you got to go for it.
Try for the steal.
You're right.
And then you got a foul.
Sparks inbound all the pits all over the place.
Don't have anybody open and how they do and let's see how quickly they the foul Got to get our guy there it is short Chris rattles will get in line he his turn to a couple of days before they got to be approaching 43 some free throws on the evening which a heck of a lot of free throws in a championship basketball game but they haven't gotten any cheap foul.
No, I but I'm saying they're probably around 75% from the line tonight.
At least just rattles a senior six four nice season for the Spartans they still up and rolls off Well this is a big win because make it a three possession game and with 39 seconds to go that's a lot of possessions to come back with.
Second one field let's and it's in an area where they can hold it is a three possession game that could be the first nail right there so I would try to bring it up quickly.
They're going to have to get something good.
Doesn't have to be a three.
Just get something inside.
Do something.
Look at that Spartan defense still coming out here.
The pressure on the outside, nothing has been easy for Carver.
Tonight is the three pointer up and looks a little short.
Nice to him.
That's a way to finish for Carlos.
Russ That'll make the highlight reel reminiscent of Brandon Boykin from the fake county game the other night.
A little quarterback.
Watch this one.
Somewhere in the stratosphere.
But the strong end of it, look for the quick foul.
Don't get it Their clock value the clock running down and what do we got to kick kick the ball still time as you come up with the quick steal got to come up with the good school Glenn Hills those Spartans trotted out it, going along looking for a man.
They've got a man up for two.
We got turnovers.
There it is.
So there's your quick turnover.
So there's still life with 14 seconds, but you're going to have to jack up a three pointer almost immediately.
You got to get one up and three or four, even a two parter.
Just get the ball up.
That's it right there.
That's perfect.
Didn't go Spartans with the rebound and Middleton will go to the foul line and he has been more than solid there So you have a good look for the third quarter looks like it had a chance to go I'll guarantee you when Carver looks at this film, they're going to see an awful lot of fouls when they put Gledhill on the line when they really didn't have to.
I hate to keep harping on it, but that's basically the difference in the ballgame.
There's no doubt about it.
Reggie Middleton will go to the foul line and if the lid an audit, this will close it, get a two or three possession game and your opponent went to the line 40 times you got to say fouls had something to do with it which was up and good.

How does it feel to be the coach to bring that home?
Well, we've been happy and we're very proud.
Matter of fact, team sports wise, it's the first state championship for any male team at Glen Hill's high school.
So are very pleased and excited about that.

How huge was that in your assessment?
Well, you know, after we got lead, in order to maintain it, we had to make free throw because they had begun to foul.
So we were able to make the majority of them.
So, you know, that played a big part.
All right, Coach, it's time to go celebrate it.
Send it back over to Stu so we can close it out.
