The coach, Smitty, they've gone out and tried to play the better defense that he would want them to play, and they want to win one for him.

For the Jenkins family, Smitty was the defensive coordinator, for lack of a better word, if you want to put it in football parlance.

Last season, Jenkins improved their ball handling on their way to a championship.

Then Coach Hampton had them improve their defense and they've taken it upon themselves to improve defensively and they're a much better defensive team this year than they were last.

And a lot of times, John, when you're taught it, you may not get it the first round.

And now in an unfortunate situation that happened with the passing of Coach Smitty, these kids have taken this sense of ownership and as a result you've seen more of a defensive success.

The team up and in four to Dimitri Chambers, nine eight and you see how the Jenkins players are practically in the hip pockets of all the Morgan County players off the screen, three short.

You can't allow that to happen.

But when you have a turnover and it comes a bump, which comes a two point or dunk or a three point play, those are the kind of plays, John, that puts your your team in a quick start to question themselves.

John And especially early here in the second quarter, Morgan County, three of four from the floor here in the second quarter.

But a lot of that has been close up.

And I guess really this is just the opportunity to take a breather on both sides.

You can sit there and just, All right, we're out of control, both sides out of control.

Couple of warning dunks for Jenkins and now you just get to regroup here.

Well, good squealing, the tempo, the energy here, John.

You know, there's a lot of adrenaline between both teams.

So that was a good time out and it's good to do that.

Have timeouts for strategy.

Sometimes you just want to calm down the tempo of the game and communicate and talk to the players, coach them just a little bit.

Now, see if we can make some positive things happen here in the second quarter because you don't want them to try too hard.

You still want them to try, but not try too hard to worry you're out of your game because when the game gets out of control, John, it's hard to rear it back in.

You got to keep control of the game and that's the way that Morgan wants to play.

Utilize the clock, be patient, but play on the control.

Jenkins on the flip side, has made one of their first four in and out of the hands of Jaylen Ingram turnovers.

And as you see, John, the first time out of the timeout John it goes straight to Ingram.

It was a turnover but they want to get the ball play through Ingram's hands on region eight player of the year heading to Florida Atlantic along with the various brown so 15 red and ten red both heading down to Boca to play basketball combined 29 points between the two and 12 rebounds this season.

As we hit the halfway point here in the second quarter, the game we pretty much expected very tight teams really weren't going to get into the sixties and seventies.

We thought scoring wise was going to be a methodical process and we're at 1916 right now.

Jenkins probing, trying to figure out where they can do things offensively from the outside, no crash on the boards and a bump.

His chambers got the rebound and got thumped out of bounds and we saw this let's see they call the foul on Emmanuel little and that's his second hang on a minute and so we're going to take another timeout here to talk things over and we're going to take a break at 331.

His versatility allows him to be very important in the process of winning.

And that's what Morgan kind of was able to get into position and get the offensive rebound there, John, and create the foul opportunity to keep possession going take it back out long.

The basketball When the guards rebound the basketball, John, that gives that transition defense a negative because you've got to have somebody back, John, to defend transition basketball this year.

He changed it and didn't need to.

Well as we talked about the Giants here's the spacing in the zone what he did he attacked the zone.

You got to attack the zone John and that's a good offensive move there by Williams getting into the paint and a three point play so it's a three point play it's 2321 Williams with five and he's up high.

Just a part of that defensive work creates another turnover Williams launch that was a big time plays on that was a big time play Now the momentum is changing is shifting towards Jenkins.

They're playing up their defense and then capitalizing in transition.

Williams has six in a row and they call the block.

I mean, I mean, John doesn't get basketball.

If this was a call calling a good game in transition basket, you got to stop the ball.

You talked about Williams He's coming off the bench, but he's a second league scorer Whenever you can shoot the ball in transition like that, John, that's hard to defend and especially when no one thinks you're going to fire from 24 feet.

Getting ready for the second 16 minutes to decide the class triple-A championship teams kind of drifting back out onto the floor for their warm ups and toe touches as they get ready for the third quarter.

Early impressions of the first half.

I thought it was a good first half zone.

The first quarter was a little slow, but once Williams came into the game, it became a little bit more fluidly.

The game started to settle down, both teams to play pretty good offense and the defenseman Jenkins definitely did pick up the intensity.

All right, let's take a look at some of the first half highlights and what went down in the first 16 minutes.

And you've got outside work and inside work.

Yeah, offensive rebounding is a big key for Jenkins, but more importantly, their defense.

Scoring in transition off of steals in transition but Morgan with Ingram attacking Ingram same thing in transition baskets off missed shots off turnovers and Ingram just being a one man show John download 13 in the first half for Jaylen Ingram what else sticks out in the halftime stat which it's not a good shooting game this game is flowing smoothly it's one for 14 from the three rebounds pretty good the turnovers John Morgan County has eight, Jenkins has three.

It's a good chance for Morgan County to cut down on their turnovers.

Pretty much.

We need to go back out in the second half.

We got to clean up the middle things.

We've got to make sure that we end the defensive possession with a defensive rebound and we've got to keep them off of the offensive glass.

They had small guards, they got to offensive rebounds and they scored.

On Also going back on the offensive end, we've got to do a better job of being ball tough with the basketball on the entry passes and continue to get the ball to guys in great spots.

We'll be looking for that in the second half.

And John, this this offensive Morgan County is going to run through Ingram John whether he's inside the paint or outside the paint whether it's a pass with of the attack or basket or shot.

No he's such a good player mid-major stud Jenkins may end up double teaming him John That's what we got to watch when we get closer towards the latter part of the game.

What happens when he gets the ball and what does Jaqen can do to force him to make a bad shot?

I'll pass it to one of the teammates with Jenkins, one of 12 from three, which means that they were ten of 19.

The rest of the time when they're inside the 19 nine line, when they're inside 20 feet over 50% from the floor.

Well, defense wins championships, John.

You can have the best offensive unit on the floor.

You can have the worst offensive unit on the floor.

We saw that with Denver Broncos this year with one of the all time greats in Peyton Manning.

The offense wasn't strong, but their defense was strong.

And that's what Jenkins has.

G. Jenkins may not be the best offensive team here in the championship, but they've got this defense in strategy and they had a defensive guru and coach Smitty and they're able to bring in a lot of that.

Obviously, Ingram led Morgan County with 13, Jordan Ford had eight.

Demaryius Brown with a bucket another opportunity missed off the rim.

He'll pull up bounce and out of bounds as they were trying to find Jordan in the paint.

There's a good look good transition but there was a second chance rebound here for Jenkins Marco Simms talked about it.

The foul number 14, Emmanuel Little had three and he's guarding Zion Williams up high.

We'll see what happens there into the paint kick it back out to Lamar for three Giannis shot that in warmups a nice stroke inside basketball he's averaging 16 and nine a game missed it Do it all and that's the defense from behind by Dimitri Chambers all ball with on the zone trying to get the ball in the heart of the zone The defense collapsed inside out basketball you got a player like Lamar you can actually put a three entry pass Ingram missed it too hard spot fire second chance muscling inside up in the air tip no hands way up high Morgan County comes out with it Well that's a nice break there on the offensive glass by Jenkins County John but you got to get back in transition defense open water but offensive rebounding.

John Jenkins is definitely doing a good job.

But when your guards rebound zone, you susceptible for transition baskets?

Gentry foul off his second sorry flip side of warriors Brown second Coffey to the line makes the first Now look at the offense John of this Jenkins team the what they're doing against the zone they've got penetration and they've got cutters you got movement against his own Morgan County zone.

These guys have worked very hard.

The staff probably one of the best staffs in the country.

I'm kind of at a loss for words right now.

You always think that you come out here with a predetermined speech, but right now, this is one of the best moments ever.

So I'm proud these guys and I'm proud of these girls.

And right now in Madison, Georgia, they are six and seven, the great kids that are out there playing basketball right now.

So we're playing basketball everywhere.
