Georgia Public Television presents the 2001 Georgia High School Association Boys State Basketball Championships.
Major funding for this broadcast is made possible in part by Georgia Natural Gas.
Heidi W Local 613 Georgia Touchstone Energy Cooperatives and by South Trust Prospect Lodge from the Center Flex in Macon, It's the GHC triple-A Boys basketball title game between the Westover Patriots and the Mitchell Baker Eagle.
Then quite a day of basketball here at the Coliseum in Macon.
Single and double eight games in the books, 888 coming up, and it's going to be a good one.
Dave Cohen and Tricia Edwards are downstairs with the call.
All right, thanks a lot, Jim.
And it's an interesting game here this afternoon in this boys triple Theresa, because you've got a game that features some interesting matchups in the first of all, of course, you got to focus in on that to number 11, who will see quite a bit.
And that is Marcus Campbell, the seven one senior center.
And that's going to pose some matchup problems this afternoon for Mitchell Baker.
Very much so.
And I think Mitchell Baker has to come out and put a lot of pressure on the ball and make that pass and make some of the selection and make it really hard for the ball to reach his hands.
You know, one of the advantages for Westover, of course, was the fact that they were able to really outrebounded their former opponent.
Of course, they beat Gainesville in the semifinals, rebounding, obviously huge hits, not only the seven one center, Campbell, but you got Greg Chick, a lot of hype and a lot of agility out there with that height.
And these these guys are really playing great basketball together.
All right.
Let's take a look at how Westover made it to the Macon Coliseum and they started out with a huge win over central Macon, 9536, proceeded to dismantle Paterno County by 4081 41.
They beat Richmond Academy 77 to 56.
And of course, the win over Gainesville, 75 to 44.
So kind of an easy road for Westover.
And you see Marcus Campbell going through the warmups.
He's headed for Mississippi State, big time player, 14 points per ballgame is going to be tough to do.
Oh, he's definitely looking to lead his team to also is a two sport player, just two sport athlete headed to Louisville and he's had a great season.
Also senior leadership there.
He knows what it takes to get here and win a championship in the Gainesville game.
It was a big game for both of those players.
Campbell, 22 points, ten rebounds and four blocked shots and for ten, 16 points, nine rebounds.
Now Mitchell Baker coming in at 22 and five and they're coached by Rufus McDuffie.
Here's their road to the state championship game, a big win over Northeast Macon, 95 to 63.
Then they dismantled this Waynesboro 9668 win over the Granger and then a big win over Banneker in their last game to get them here, 100 to 66 big time defensive play and team game.
We have the West End right now.
Let's turn it over to this group so they get set to introduce the starting line up here in this afternoon's ballgame against the same defense.
A big part of the ball game today really on both sides.
But I guess it comes down to how well they can handle the big time playing inside off of Westover.
Well, they're going to have to prove that their defense is just going to be key full court press wise.
I think that Mitchell Baker has to put the pressure on the ball.
They have to be in the passing lane and they have to make it hard.
And I also feel like they're going with the starting lineup.
And here we go for Westover and one guard, they're going to go with the senior and that will be Derrick Williams.
Gregg, Tennessee forward, also a senior for Campbell Big Marcus Campbell 271 senior at center It'll be Goodson at guard another senior and another senior in and forward and you see a very senior Laden ballclub there for Wesco a lot of experience it speaks volumes going to see game in this game today to there no they're no strangers to state championships at one three in the last three seasons and they've moved up in class three and they've got something to prove today trying to send their head coach, Willie Boston, out on a winning note as he announced that he will step down, retire at the end of this current season.
And they have made it all the way here to the state championship game.
As you said, Teresa, they're looking for their first in 23 eight.
Yeah, in the past three years.
They get to the state championship in Double-A west over in this division.
This is a high for them today.
Those boxes given a lot of they're looking to give them a lot back today.
They come in at 28 and three overall.
And of course, these two teams play during the regular season.
And Mitchell Baker beaten by West over in two of those three ballgames.
There you see head coach Willie Boston again as I said, will step down 478 career wins.
And now the starting line up for Mitchell Baker, Morris West, a 510 senior in the back four.
He'll be joined by Iman Jones, six one junior.
Andy Dawson, a junior, is at the start of one of the forward spots also with Anthony Cole and with Charlie Ross.
And you see the Charlie Ross really the tallest player they've got at six four.
So coming up, it's the state triple-A championship West over and Mitchell Baker back with the opening tip right after this on TV funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls basketball championships is provided in part by the following you're watching.

You're watching the NCAA basketball championships on TV.
Welcome back to the Macon Coliseum as we get set for the state triple-A championship.
Westover Mitchell Baker Right now let's send it courtside, our friend Jon Nelson.
Jon.
Thanks, Coach.
I've never been much of the sky.
Walker's my basketball ability can attest, but this is what seven one will look like for the rest of the day.
Two Mitchell Baker There are a lot of matchup problems.
Rufus Boston in games two and three against the team played zone and that's where he's going to put Campbell and Mitchell Baker is on offense on defense.
It's going to be interesting to see what Rufus McDuffie does.
He has said that what he will do is go man on man against Campbell until he gets burned.
And Coach Edwards, what do you have to say?
I, I would say that they should have prayed to the kid.
Got a little sickness this morning, but it didn't happen.
We got a big game ahead of us, this one.
So we're set.
The tip is up and it will come down to Mitchell Baker.
They are in red and west, over in the white uniforms.
Mitchell Baker gets the ball.
Now Mitchell's out of the wings.
Long jumper is up.
It is no good.
By Morris West.
The rebound by ten they started the game rebounding though.
Sir Gary Goodson going to feed it down to the big center Campbell down low His baseline jumper is no good and out with the rebound is Dorsett Boston drive for they lost the basketball takes with it for the send it up ahead Deron Williams missed the layup the rebound there by justice to stick back the chicken little kiss is going on deep maybe a little taste is going on so the six five senior puts west over ahead two to nothing and a collision over on the left wing on the offensive end for Mitchell Baker.
We got a whistle and a foul.
Mr. Baker needs to gather himself real quick and he just had to the ball as they're doing it.
But they've got to hit the ball first.
Three ball that foul on number 33 carry Goodson Lamar Jones the inbounds passes deflected and stolen Daryl Williams up with the loose ball for Westover There you see Kerry Goodson number 33 running the point for Westover since they love it in the big Campbell turnaround jumper isn't as good looking you do about that said their front line guys have got their work cut out for them and it's a four nothing advantage for Westover.
Oh, that's Anthony Cole makes a move goes down low and he's awesome on the right wing Oh for the big man Nice Nice move by Dorsett as he challenges the big seven one center Mitchell Baker The pressure they need This is a pressure has got to make it so tight and they force the turnover Johnson with the loose balls just fouled on his way to the basket yes you know what Mr. Big big in here by love.
That wasn't luck.
The reason they get you in that defense is that person has to be there.
All these years.
It has to be there for them.
They Aaron Reed picks up that foul.
That's his first second team foul on Westover and really three for Mitchell Baker you've almost got to play pressure defense the entire ballgame with that lineup You know that shouldn't be a problem any trouble today.
I think Coach McDuffie knows that and he's got to use his defense.
No question.
It's his second free throw.
It's no good.
Campbell gets the rebound.
Lob pass comes out to Williams.
Now they get it back to Gibson.
Here's a fadeaway jumper it is up by Williams no good There's a three finally for Lee and it's a 6 to 2 ballgame when Mr. Baker knows their scouting report.
They know that this is a great rebounding team to play against today.
They've got to take care of the ball.
Anthony Cole running the point and lob in the middle does a turnaround suffocating Stewart.
Actually the big man isn't going to be so intimidating at the moment, but I think it's going to get in there.
There's that pressure defense and the inbounds pass forcing another turnover.
Lamar Jones lost it as he tried to drive down the lane loose 37 and it's taken by Aaron Reed and it's now an eight two for the ballgame West over with a four point advantage 525 to play here in the first quarter.
Here's Ross again turnaround jumper no good the rebound Daryl Williams Gary Goodson with pressure from the West gets it across the midcourt line down with a little shove Here's the jumper by West gophers leading in good way Campbell got the offensive rebound and the stick back.
I saw him get a pushed underway but it didn't make any difference at his height.
So now Mitchell Baker and coach Rufus McDuffie going to bring in the reserves?
Actually, it's not so much the reserves.
He basically plays five and five.
He's got the five starters.
He really feels that the second unit comes in and they play cohesive basketball.
They know he fire and in their offensive unit that he likes handles at 48 points per game.
The free throw is up.
He is good.
He completes the three point play, an 11 to 4 ballgame right now in favor of West over back the other direction as Carolina kicks it in the corner long jumper is up there by Haywood it has no good rebound inside brought down second by Anderson and he can't get his shot up and big Campbell comes up with the ball now you see Campbell in the middle I'm sure it does.
McDuffie is hoping that the second unit gives him a momentum change here.
Daryl Williams firing a three from the left wing.
It is no good knocked out of bounds Last touch by Mitchell Baker so it will stay with West over now the fourth 36 to go here in the first quarter huge block shot there by that big seven one center Campbell here he is on the inbound pass goes right up with it.
The layup is short.
Mitchell Baker, the rebound, they push it up the floor.
There's the running driving layup.
That's the way they've got a tech.
They've got to attack Dickinson.
Wade Haywood gets fouled It's got to be strength in their game today they've 33 first anniversary services that this event is definitely going to come into place.
I think both teams have great centers.
They've had great centers all season long.
Daryl Williams hit with that foul.
That's his first Haywood, a59 junior missing on that first free throw attempt, second free throw in place.
There's a big offensive rebound underneath by Travis Williams.
And Campbell got a hand on the ball.
You notice Campbell doesn't even jump to stick away.
He doesn't have to at this point.
You don't have to.
He will when he gets on to the next level.
Yeah.
Yeah.
More full court pressure by Mitchell Baker, all in the hands of good pressure.
22 Aaron Reed And we got a whistle amount and a timeout called it's going to be a 32nd timeout called by Westover Smart timeout.
I think Mr. Baker has the right game plan in hand right now.
They're using him very well.
He's got to convert on the other end of the break of the action we invite you to Don't miss Georgia's only statewide high school sports and academics program.
It's called Prep Sports.
Plus, you can see it Saturday mornings at 11 right here on TV, down to 416 to go here in the first quarter.
Seven point advantage for Westover.
They lead it 11 to 4.
You got a good game here.
I don't think the game is out of hand at all.
I think that Mr. Baker is definitely we consider him on the team trying to find something here and starting there on the bench, wondering what they've got to do.
So tonight to put it in play, Ball comes back court to carry Goodson out in the hands of Reed.
They tend to use the stay with pretty much the starters for good bit of the ballgame.
Here's a shot out of the corner by Williams left side punch to the rim no good big rebound there by Campbell stick back jumper again He's no good got a whistle underneath and it's going against Westover Well 321 in the first game of the season on that foul on Reed and that's his second fourth team foul against Westover back on the other end Mitchell Baker and a shot by no trace Carolina this one not much passing going on in the half court here so far a lot of penetration to the basket and actually taking out the big man.
I'm surprised There you see the field goal so far.
Westover Right at 50%.
Mitchell Baker two of three.
Steele On the other end and here's Williams back to ten.
He'll drive the lane.
His runner is up no good comes off the back of the cylinder rebound brought down Carolina with the rebound on the strip Westover He's got to go right down low to consistently not Jones really obvious that Westover talked about the press and they really cleared the court really fast that time person about in the middle going to down the floor and getting the numbers on it made an adjustment really quick here.
Gave a lot of credit to the six five junior Tremaine Ferguson underneath taking the charges.
He has the toughest matchup on the floor right now as he is matched in the middle with Campbell.
Here's a long three by Carolina It is up he does no good rebound is brought down by West over Williams you see it down to 313 to play here in the first quarter across the line as Gibson drives gets it inside the ten is going to be another offensive foul against Westover.
I really think Mr. Baker had had to consider their offense here.
I think they're taking six or eight shots in the first shot is coming from the outside and with the rebounding team like Westover, they don't have a chance.
16 fouls for Westover, just one on Mitchell Baker.
Carolina comes front court running.
The point for Mitchell Baker works against good Gibson find some down over there by Kansas they get it up ahead Williams short jumper in the lane is Dick Gibson is 0a9 point advantage now four against Westover so Baker comes back down the other end for Carolina penetrates gets cut down to low has to lock the ball back out front and the footrace nobody can win it ball goes out of bounds it's going to be Mitchell Baker basketball Here comes the starting five go there you see Carolina trying to penetrate and Marcus Campbell says, I will have none of that again and again and again.
He will beat him at four blocks in their win in the semifinals.
Back running the point I'm on Jones for Mitchell Baker kicks it out on the wing to Coles He almost traveled jumper no good Campbell got the rebound going to have a reaching and foul call against Mitchell Baker I guess that's a warning for the big man not to bring that ball.
Then you go into the big leagues, you definitely can't do it.
We're down to 216 to go here in the first quarter.
There's the lob inbounds pass almost stolen Big break for Westover and there is a steal picked up there by West in the lane goes up got a whistle and a fight in the scramble He tried to initiate that contact just to the line.
It's a great scramble for them so West tries to get something inside, makes the seven one center trying to dump it off to one of his wing players, Charlie Ross.
And they got a blocking foul called against Westover and it goes against Aaron Reed you see west of the line averaging almost 9.3.
I need you to go down right now.
There's a high standard in that four points but their team needed that was aggressive of here secondary throw by West is good as it fumbles and it's a 13 six ballgame.
The inbounds pass comes in to Campbell gets to his and Williams in the corner beautiful give and go back to Williams and he goes inside and that's the shirt 2.0 yeah if given their height they're looking over the press right now passing out of it really well which is great.
And then on the other hand West going to try it again, goes down low, leaves it up in the middle of the field is up and it is good by Dawson You got to love it when a guard can sit over a big guy like that and he.
DAWSON just 61a freshman getting a workout here this afternoon.
Inside.
It's a 15 eight ballgame.
West over by seven.
Back the other way.
K.C.
Goodson And they throw it away.
Mitchell They go up with him.
He's full of fires in the corner inside time.
Diamond Jones No good.
The rebound attention.
He got to whistle.
I think they've got a case of playing too hard right now.
One of three.
And there you see that beautiful two man game there with Campbell and Williams.
Nice pass by the big man to his cutting teammate.
Definitely a crowd pleaser, isn't it tense to put it in play?
Trying to find an open player?
Cannon has to call timeout going to be a 32nd timeout called by West over.
They're setting themselves and getting themselves in a great position to be in this game all game long and that's a good thing.
Even though they've started out a little shaky, they're still in this game.
We've got a lot of game to be played here.
Timeout comes with a minute 22 to go here in the first quarter.
It's a seven point advantage for Westover.
I think for the first time they're actually making West over.
So that pressure now is having to call these timeouts and to adjust to the pressures is going to be big and they run out of time, out to benches.
You can listen and watch all of the state playoff games on the internet.
Simply go to WW w dot dot org and follow the links.
All games will be available for the entire month.
Once again that website address w WW dot dot org.
Gary Goodson with the ball now for west over in the corner there at five Williams to three really very nice so they push the lead now to double digits it's a ten point advantage Ahmad Jones and west out of the wings Boy West with a mental left there Teresa just dribble it off his foot goes out of bounds Big turnover Ooh I think the feeling it you got to get those butterflies inside of their stomach.
Mitchell Baker still comes with that full court pressure The patriots with West over beat it pretty easily that time they get it inside the ten beautiful give and go to Williams Williams gets fouled on his way to the basket Great ball movement great fun and then great movement without the ball So you know the big guy inside Marcus Campbell gets a lot of the attention on this ballclub simply because he's seven one and headed to the Southeastern Conference, Mississippi State.
But Gregg Tench is a pretty good player to the six five senior.
He said it to play to lose it.
Yes, he is.
He's a two sport player.
You think before he goes back to basics.
He's the only senior the team with actual state championship experience also.
So he knows what it feels like to be out here on this quarter.
And Campbell is going to get a break and are going to come in with Isaac Wooden, a66 senior second free throw is good.
Hit some bowls and it's a 20 to 8 ball game in favor of West over inside of a minute here in the first quarter Anthony Cole bounce pass gets it through the lane.
The shot is up from the left wing.
It is an airball loose ball down low.
The shot is up it is no good by Jarvis Williams and he draws the contact step to the free throw line here with 25 seconds to play in the quarter.
Mitch Baker is actually trying to find an open shot there.
You're actually looking for the outside opportunity as well as penetrating to the basket now, which is smart basketball in there, moving the ball a little better.
So this might be a time in the game with Campbell on the bench for Mitchell Baker to make a little bit of a run and cut that deficit.
So most definitely they have to take advantage of his presence on the bench.
Anthony Cole checks out their routine with back in second String.
So no West comes through, gets a big rebound and then gets the ball straight.
Carlos Roberson up to the ball for west over was the double team he doesn't to ball a jump ball the possession arrow Teresa goes in favor of Mitchell Baker their hard work will pay off every time that was good solid hard work a great trip for downtown down to 12 seconds to play here in the first quarter.
Lamar Jones has the ball strip taken away by Casey Goodson.
The shot is up no good.
Robertson tries to chip at it and the buzzer sounds.
And the first quarter is done here at the Macon Coliseum in the state Tripoli Championship Games 22 nine in favor of Westover over Mitchell Baker right now.
Let's send it to a break.
Back with more after this.
On TV funding for broadcast at the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following you're watching the NCAA basketball championships on TV.
And welcome back.
Dave Cohen and Teresa Edwards courtside here at the Making Coliseum 22 nine.
The score as Westover Net jumped early on Mitchell Baker.
And it really hasn't been so much the presence of the big seven one center.
He's been a presence defensively, but it's been a lot of the other guys that have been been taking part in this ball game, making a big contribution, guys like Greg Tension.
Daryl Williams I think that's really due to the fact that they've played some really good defense.
They're coming up with all these balls and running the floor well and they're getting out in the open court quick here.
Second quarter just about to get underway.
We'll put it in place and that's number 33.
Carrie Goodson works the ball in against Haywood to get it inside.
Campbell.
Oh, nice touch.
Nice touch for the big man, though.
Campbell knocks it down and it's a 22 nine ball game now.
West Coast man Jones and West, along with Haywood, pretty much running the backcourt.
There's the shot no good.
Campbell gets the rebound, but continues to amaze me.
He's going to the big man I think you saw penetrating chicken dish the ball out against the zone or you know you find the gaps and cut in those gets the passes to the guy.
Just take it to the mountain after the a turnover bell almost a turnover Deron Williams hustles back and threw it away Nice big pass inside there by Williams two quick ten and ten can't get cannot get the shot to go down but gets foul I mean Kim was showing some versatility there he found it that pass really easy and he's going to take this package to Mississippi State.
I think he's going to be a great college basketball player and I'm happy to say that he's going to be in the SCC.
So great chance at the line for West Davis, Eddie Dawson coming in for Mitchell Baker.
He'll replace the senior Morris West Huge season for Greg tension 24 points and nine rebounds a game headed to play for the cardinal at Louisville second free zone is a big offensive rebound Williams to stick back shot is short Mitchell Baker with the rebound off down low Ross and his shot partially blocked there by Campbell And now they got him outside the paint there and they're really trying to is this going to work they've got to keep taking it to his third game outside of the paint I think that's a plus.
So Charlie Ross at the line for Mr. Baker.
And you got to take advantage those three things that's got to be a must to they're getting to the line no problem.
On the second one there for Charlie Ross and they lob the ball into Campbell gets it ahead to Goodson as the Patriots push it up quickly pushes Chandler off the glass is good for them 24 to 10 in favor of west over the heat blocked shot by Campbell Oh that was too easy Mitchell Baker going to try it again they go into Ross this time the shot is up It is no good game plan number two if he doesn't come in in six, fouling them first.
Surprisingly enough on Campbell, that's just his first.
And once again, Charlie Ross, the six four senior at the free throw line.
Hey, same situation as just a few minutes ago.
Missing the first free throw.
You see, he's averaging about, oh, seven points a game.
Second one is up.
It was good and they pulled it within 2411.
They come out with some full court pressure.
GIBSON Ahead to Tim Williams in the corner for good.
He does his spot.
I've seen him do that a couple times as well.
So far, the pressure has not really affected Westover.
Westover definitely adjusted to the pressure they're passing out over there making really quick passes and they know they know exactly where they're passing to and it's making it easy on the offensive end.
So Mitchell Baker calls the timeout.
Rufus McDuffie wants to talk things over.
They trail at 27 to 11 and we're down to 624 to go here in the second quarter by Mitchell Baker must consider more pressure.
I know they're working hard and they're extending a presence in court, but they've got to deflect the ball.
They've got to do that because sometimes a little tough, savvy guys.
Yes, but you can't fight them in the end.
So that makes a difference.
It makes it also make a bigger difference if you don't at the end of this game.
And this will ready to take place to the going to ask a lot of you this game is a battle of the self.
You got 2 million old men going at it right here now next door in carousel is definitely one of those southern battles.
Ball comes in play to the crease Carolina as he's in running the point right now they lob in the corner everything back to Carolina trying to fight through a screen there's a three rolls around no good there by Hayward.
They come up with an offensive rebound.
There's a traveling violation underneath.
Tough break there.
They're really crushing their boards really hard.
They had an opportunity where Campbell was outside the paint.
That would have been a big three When Davis comes back in the ballgame, as does Tremaine Nickerson, here comes ten finds Williams on the wing, back to Gibson, another three.
This upset is good season beginning to film West over, starting to pull away.
They lead at 3211 is feeling good about themselves at the moment.
Carolina try to find some room to work on the left wing and look the right side finds Dorsett is runner is short tends to rebound smart defense smart defense I wish there was a record for Gary Goodson from the free throw line you good and it's going to be another timeout 32nd timeout Beethoven what do you do here is everything we're missing everything.
Rufus McDuffie, a mitchell Baker just called a timeout.
45 seconds to go.
And they call another one to try to take a little bit of the momentum away from Westover.
Westover just up and down the floor.
The full court pressure of Mitchell Baker really hasn't affected him one bit.
No, they've they've had two timeouts to adjust and somehow Kuzma doesn't need to make it tonight and come back with a different option.
So Westover is cruising the season at the moment Eastern good basketball is making good shots and making good decisions and they're allowing Mitchell to make their mistakes.
Winton Davis will put it in play.
He's one of the big guys offensively that they look for coming off the bench, not a starter.
They had a great game last game in Get the ball inside to Jarvis Williams tries to dunk over Campbell They both hit the floor.
What a highlight That would have been just 5 seconds so they're going to call that foul on Marcus Campbell.
That'll be his second personal.
We've got 5 minutes, 17 seconds left.
Let me tell you, they can get a third foul on.
I spoke a little too soon.
There.
They definitely had to take him out of the game.
They were going to attack him the entire first night.
So his first hit, the first miss is the second since the rebound.
This is one of those opportunities for Mr. Baker to take over Campbell, over this Winston leading at 32.
Well, here's just the free throw line jumper, short battle for the rebound foul and taken by Mitchell Baker Jarvis Williams every opportunity down the floor I'll concede you have to be serious.
They must make a mistake.
Look, there's a mop.
James spins a short, make it rebound right down.
They fire it back out on the wing jumper there by Jones again.
No good.
We got a whistle underneath.
They're working really hard.
They're just trying to take good shots.
But I think they're rushing themselves and they're forcing up what they think is the only shot that they may have.
And that's just not the case.
Dan, a little patience and finding the best shot will be the benefit to their team.
With Campbell out, you see number 24 that size of Gordon Campbell's back up the six six here's the jumper Davis no good now the rebound on the offensive glass there for Mitchell Baker the ball the strip knocked out of bounds It's a play that time by Terry Gibson he deflected it off the leg.
Both teams are playing hard right now and I don't think.
Mr. Baker they're definitely playing hard.
But Westover doesn't want to give up this momentum stage right here on the 425 to play here in the second quarter.
I think your neighbor was trying to find out, signed away here, doing everything in the line and marching to the basket.
And maybe small kids were playing too hard.
So Mitchell Baker has made a substitution as Ross comes back on the floor.
Currently their tallest player, Casey Goodson in traffic, gives it up to carry this in mission control.
Now they seem to mention as well three point shot.
Williamson ends in rebound.
Mitchell Baker and Ross came down with the rebound.
He got wrapped up in Saint Campbell who got the rebound to end the play there by Isaac Wooden and they're going to call that follow Mitchell Baker's Charlie Ross that'll be his second and the sixth.
So he'll check out of the ball game.
Jermaine Jackson comes back in.
They love it, too.
Woody gets it out on the wing traveling violation and also makes it kind of to guard one guy Now sees Campbell in the game.
The focus is solely around him, but it is an outside game.
So Boston like to play.
You know, they've got to guard everyone here.
You see it just under 4 minutes to go.
Second quarter again, they'll attack the basket.
Dawson's runner is no good touch the rebound they see Gibson bring it across the midcourt line Gary Johnson in some trouble lost the ball Mitchell Baker two on one hands out and and a whistle and a foul underneath it.
That's great That's a good run.
Both players are trying to find a way to get to the basket quickly found him in the I say he's just a chance to get to the line taking advantage of that two on one that time there you see the foul bodies hit the floor underneath Isaac Goodin got back and a hand on that basket counted one time so a free throw opportunity for the six five junior averages about 11 points a game.
The free throw is good.
They make it a 30 to 15 ballgame.
A little bit of time to try to cut into this Westover lead and the nice steal on the other end.
Nice Derrick Haywood finishing it off.
Got to keep the pressure on Mr. Sanders.
They get that get that triple team Goodson in the corner to Williams down no good they battle for the rebound and Mitchell Baker Jermaine Jackson had the rebound and then threw it away.
He that took my breath away.
I knew that three point shot would have stuck somewhere out in this game.
But I'll tell you what, they came out with another big rebound.
Second, this is a tight basketball that has to continue.
The advantage is that Campbell's on the bench.
So Maurice West, the 510 scene, you're going to be at the line to shoot to Campbell's up to come back in the two fouls 3 minutes before half time That's a risk foul on Goodson His second and the first one by West is good Marcus Campbell has made his way back on the floor.
Isaac Wooden will head over to the Patriots bench.
I'm sure their first assignment is going to be attacking.
Let's get him back to the bench is one of his play.
So in the second half, when he hits the second and it's a 3219 score west over on top, they love the ball in full court pressure consistent across the line too good see they love inside Campbell Johnson and it's got by Greg ten nice finish 3419 yes back the other end quickly Davis on the left corner Williams with a high got the rebound in that full court Intense pressure by Mitchell Baker West over those got some room for that Mitchell Baker Oh and that gets the crowd rocking here at the Macon Coliseum.
Rocking.
That was nice job.
Excellent job passing the basketball.
I saw that coming by West.
The big man brought a lot of confidence back.
It also, you know, what I like about Campbell is his ability to pass the basketball.
Yes, very well.
He's seen the floor.
Well, he can find that open man West on the other end, missing the jumper, Goodson comes down with the rebound and they give it up.
Quintin Davis turnaround fadeaway off.
The steal is no good.
Goodson gets the rebound again finds Williams up the floor ten from the left side back to Williams the runner is no good rebound brought down Jarvis Williams They've got to find a way to get the ball in the middle that's got to score here three point attempt by Haywood shot no good Campbell the rebound as the ball knocked away but it comes right to Gibson does Hardaway careless turnover there Campbell once again needs to keep that ball they're waiting on that opportunity to reach him when he brings it down We're down to a minute 47 to go here in the second quarter.
It's a 3619 game.
Eddie Dawson comes back into the ballgame.
Maurice West will head over to the Mitchell Baker bench.
Dawson trying to penetrate those right up against the big guys inside and draws the contact the 60 again into line and a break that time for Westover they call the foul on ten and believe me he was definitely going George Campbell that really should be their focus right here at the minute it's going to you should be able to see really take that ball at Cameron ever since team and get the ball to them so the knee is forced to play solid defense going back in for west over Carlos Roberson and he gets it Johnson missed the first here the second and it's a 36 to 20 ball game Aaron Reed on the left side lost it That's the two tips goes up and should go for great ten centers looking like a big man Moore is out there now 38 to 20 Dawson will penetrate kick it out the where they were shot so good handle the rebound Haywood is just using this to finish this He looks looks good as it loses Nance and Gibson from the left wing shot no good rebound.
Reed gets wrapped up in his hands about right here.
We're down to a minute.
Three to go here in the second quarter.
Definite.
Definitely.
Feeling like Mitchell Baker can't get a thing right.
Westover can't get a lead on the season averaging 12.4 rebounds.
Also dishes out a couple of assists per game right?
Maurice West and Charlie Ross back on the floor for Mitchell Baker.
So one out of two and it's a 3920 ballgame, only a minute to go.
You're up 39 to 20.
I think I would sit down with him, say that.
So what do you think?
Also back in Jeremy Crawford for Westover six five senior shot is up in line blocked it it him a six on the through it and tomahawk there for Drexel and it's a 4120 ballgame Westover gonna love that man you can never if only I could slide here you go west on the wings and kick it over on the left side comes to Dawson and look to penetrate the ball is go Here comes pace again.
Drives right down the lane finger in is too nice to see Westover making a huge push here in the final minute Yes they are They're they're really fun to hammer down right here.
They're leaving.
Have no reason to have any hope.
Morris West, They go right in the middle.
Kick it out.
Dawson.
Here's a three.
It is up to no good.
It doesn't sounds weird.
Halftime here at the Macon Coliseum, a lot of regrouping here.
This is an exciting ball game.
What's going to say you know, when they're playing like a championship team No doubt And it's not so much been the inside presence of Marcus Campbell, although he's done a pretty good job.
It's been a lot of the other things that they've been able to do on the floor that's made the big difference.
So we're at halftime and it's a 4320 ballgame.
West over leading Mitchell Baker right now.
Let's send it to John Nelson courtside jump Thanks coach here with Willie Boston head coach for 10 minutes of intermission and another 16 you didn't lie you said two three zone and they weren't able to hit early on.
Yes, we play good defense.
The only thing that helped me a little concerned we're not very smooth and breaking that press.
They've missed a lot of free throws and that's why we have a comfortable lead at this time.
Had they made that free throw, they would be right in the ballgame.
But they are the type team that can come down and hit four of five, six threes in a row and you got a 20 point lead.
You look up and it is four or five.
So we got to do a better job of wrecking the press in the second half.
And when you're in the two three zone with the smaller lineup, it adds a different dynamic.
When you have the seven one guy in the middle, it seems out there on the floor.
No doubt we can play tight on the perimeter and ask them to drive because they're drive it to a lot of trouble.
When they drive it to Marcus, usually he'll block it.
All right, Coach, go back in there, make some adjustments for the second half.
Up by 23.
He's still coaching Gordon Isaac Witness He just took a shot to the knee, either icing it now and he should be ready to play second half.
Guys, back to you.
All right, Thanks a lot, John.
So we're at halftime here at the Macon Coliseum, Westover leading Mitchell Baker 43 to 20.
Back with more after this.
You're on TV funding for a broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following This is GB TV, your PBS station serving Atlanta and all of Georgia GPD TV bringing you the best.
You're watching the NCAA basketball championships on TV.
And welcome back to the Cineplex in Macon.
It's halftime of the Triple H finale.
Mitchell Baker trailing Westover Big time, 43 to 20.
Looks like head coach Willie Boston is going to go out with a bang as he retires after 37 years of coaching.
All right, let's go downstairs now to John Nelson.
John, thanks you here with Principal Jean Melvin of Westover, who's got his own cheering section over here.
As soon as he stepped out on the floor, everybody was cheering because the man's getting some time.
I got to ask your impressions of the first half.
First half were great.
We played our normal ball game.
They played theirs.
Theirs is a pressing game, trying to get turnovers and hit threes.
They got it some, but I think we beat the press more than than they hurt us on it.
We did a good job.
Let me ask you about the region one rivalry a little bit.
What's what is the West over Mitchell Baker rivalry, right.
Like to the rest of the state that doesn't quite understand what it's like.
Well, we just started in the region with Mitchell Baker this year.
We actually had not been in the region with him.
They moved up.
We stayed the same.
They moved in our region.
Probably they're the second most noted, maybe the basketball team in the state.
They won the last three state championships.
Of course, Coach Boston, everybody knows Coach Boston.
He's won five in the last ten years, been in the finals.
Seven of the last ten has a chance for a number six.
So it's a tremendous rivalry.
What does coach Boston meant to the Patriot family over all these years?
Well, he's been there 22 years.
Oh, he's retiring this year.
I don't I don't really know the words to describe Coach Boston.
I spent 14 years coaching basketball.
He just does a super job.
He does his kids are good kids.
They all do what they're supposed to do.
He does what he's supposed to do.
His record speaks for itself.
But if you watched him on the bench, he's kind of turn it over to his assistant.
He sits back.
He's a little popcorn, which is pretty hard to do.
When you going for your sixth state championship?
High praise a man in Melbourne.
I appreciate your time.
I'll send it back over to Jim.
All right.
Thanks, John.
Two more games coming up later tonight.
The Quad eight game, Dani taking on Mays and then the first five a championship ever.
As far as basketball is concerned, the Blue Jackets of Savannah take on the Patriots of Bridgewater.
Go back courtside.
John Nelson Gee whiz, we've swapped out principals.
Now it's time for Kenneth Hubbard, a mitchell Baker.
Let me ask it, since it's been a while since I've been in Camilla.
What is Mitchell Baker Basketball mean to everybody on both sides of the Flint River and in Carmel and everybody?
What does what does it mean for Mitchell Baker to be here year in and year out?
Okay.
For both sides of the Flint River is means a lot to our community and school.
And we are happy to be here.
What does it mean?
Every year it's almost like clockwork.
It's like the sun rises in the morning.
Coach McDuffie is going to be here in March.
What's it like?
What is Coach Duffy's impact been on the high school in both counties and what has he meant to that?
Your school?
He has a great program.
He's a hard worker and.
His program means a lot to the community.
We have a lot of supporters and the community to take pride in this program.
We have a bunch of fine kids work hard and we coming off a33 feet and we are proud to be here is we looked over before everybody went to take their loan.
Little intermission.
There's a lot of red in this audience.
What does it mean to have everybody roll up I-75 and show up here to have the kind of backing that you always got seem to have year in and year out?
We look forward to this each year and our fans support us 100%.
With us in Camillo, Camilla, Albany are making and we're proud to be here.
Is it one of those situations where we kind of use this phrase every once in a while with the last person out, turns the lights and everybody shows up?
Well, no, not exactly.
When you turn on the lights, everybody shows up when you're talking about Baker High School basketball, we take pride in the athletic program, especially our basketball program, our football program.
And it's just a wonderful sensation for us.
And they definitely turn on the lights here today.
Principal Hubbard, I appreciate your time.
Thanks for hanging out with us here.
And let's send it back to you, too.
Principal Down.
Hey, way to go, John.
You know, I tell you what, he first he gives class in biology and history and math.
Now he's got the principles.
John's getting into this thing.
He might be a teacher by next year.
Who knows?
Hey, listen, we've had some great basketball games here.
TV It all started off earlier today with the single-A championship.
And here are the highlights.
Taylor County's Akeem Hartman had a great ballgame scoring points that way.
That one was the easy way.
Edwards a carry and a follow and jam right there.
Buford Though I tell you, they hung tight.
Rico Brown hit a three pointer, but then Antoine McClain an easy layup on the other end for Taylor County deal.
Brown dialed up from long distance and here from downtown scores it big Buford was in with ten points.
He was just too tough.
I mean the slams down the end for McCrary look at this one here.
Their first celebration since 1966.
Taylor County goes on to beat Buford, 58 to 39 in a great ballgame, played by Taylor County.
McCreery, had 17 points.
He was highest scorer for for Taylor County, and Buford High scorer was Isaac Brown with 15 points.
All right.
The double AA game in case you missed it, another dandy between each Calhoun here your highlights Casey Baxter.
He'll light it up here early with the short jumper.
Nice shot by Baxter.
He's tall, though.
Was just too tough.
Check.
Take a look at this.
Three pointer off the left wing by Derrick Jones.
Nothing but net.
He's tall was too much.
The Kazee brothers finally find togetherness square underneath What a play And then Mark Cosby.
What can you say about this kid?
He's just too much riding up from long distance.
But you know, Calhoun never gave up.
Kevin Anderson down low plays the post real strong and a turnaround you can count down every day of the week with Kevin Anderson.
He's tall.
Matt Causey on the lay up and he'll finally hit it right here.
And here you go.
There's Matt Causey, the Causey brothers and the rest of these tall teams celebrate 78, 67.
They are a winner over the Calhoun Yellowjackets.
I will send it down courtside.
Now to Dave Cohen and Teresa Edwards Hill Gang.
All right.
All right.
Thanks a lot, Jim.
Dave Kern, along with Trace.
Edwards first half is in the books.
And so far it's been all west over.
They have done a pretty good job handling what we expected from the full court pressure.
Mitchell Blakeney For me, because Coach Boston is concerned about Bristol Press Press breaking and moving the ball down the court easy.
And he's a man that doesn't want to relax.
And we've seen also the presence of, the big guy inside seven one center, Marcus Campbell.
I love his presence in the game.
I think Mitchell Baker is trying to get him out of the game, but I love his big size and what he's doing in there.
All right.
We're going to take a look at some of your stats here in the first half.
There you see it, a 4320 advantage for Westover.
They've shot 57% from the floor, just 23% for Mitchell Baker.
And there you see a big problem for Mitchell Baker, Tyrese, just nine of 17 from the line.
Well, they've had an opportunity to kind of make it a little bit closer ballgame.
Yes, sir.
And I think it's going to come into play at the end of the game.
Yeah.
They're also oh of six from the field on the three point shot getting outrebounded, 15 seven here.
Some highlights from that half Williams Daryl Williams out of the corner drains a three point shot.
He's been hot.
He's at the rim back on the other end Jarvis Williams gets it in in the Haywood and he finishes off that nice fast break point and Williams again in the corner Here's Big ten and he polishes it off with a dunk his leadership the sun improved definitely brings great touch again with that two handed tomahawk and it's Westover leading it 43 to 20 here at halftime.
Back with more right after this.
On TV funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following You're watching member supported TV, your PBS station bringing you the best.
You're watching the NCAA basketball championships on TV.
They've gone.
And Teresa Edwards, the former Georgia lady, bulldog, five time Olympian, not me but her, but back courtside at the Coliseum in Macon.
It's a 4320 ball game.
Greg, you're going to put it in play.
Let's see if you can come up with some shot selection here.
They put them back in the game.
They come right into the corner.
There's the seven one center.
Marcus Campbell, up and back out front to Goodson.
They post up Campbell in the lane turnaround hook is good won't welcome traveling violation on Campbell yes Campbell does have some girl to take place he's going to have to learn to take that ball with him every time he puts it on the floor.
There's going to be a hand there.
And he, Dawson led Mitchell Baker with five points in that first half.
He controls the ball right now, lobs it up the wing to Clinton Davis to Baker has an opportunity to score first to give him the performance.
Here's Morris West in a challenge he'll up inside left it short ten wraps up with Tremaine Ferguson for the rebound But and it's going to be Mitchell Baker possession here right out of the wings Clinton Davis left side shot for three is no good They've now missed all seven of their three point attempts so far in the game.
Westover remain consistent with their rebounding and given Mr. Baker only one attempted basket should be a traveling violation on 10th.
Had some room to move, but it's got to be kind of tangled up there Now.
Mitchell Baker's going to get the ball back, still an opportunity for them and start the second half of a flustered Westover hasn't come out dominate is a sweet turnaround jumper is up and it is good by John Williams so they can beat on this one we got to give it pressure great pressure and that's it They're known best for that pressure defense.
That's how they've gotten here to the championship ballgame.
Aaron Read this great analysis.
You're making this up for Gibson in the corner to Williams for three is no good Rebound right down by Jarvis he gets it back to Dawson There's a no look underneath something like I said on the big screen fantasy the first is a second string and they can push the ball with Campbell coming down, the last player on the floor is going to be a five on four every time.
Nice ball movement to break the pressure that time shot in the lane is up make that read his shot up in the lane No good done here Stanley proving that they are human You on the wing again left side Williams lobs down to Campbell Campbell this time as his hands up the offensive foul on the center Campbell that's going to be his third as the sun cruises early in the second half here may get him Russell and wrap it a little bit here and you never know what's going to happen but I think they're the game plan is actually they're settling in.
They're playing good basketball, They're putting the pressure on and advantage of 601 to go here in the third quarter.
Mitchell Baker trying to make a run of it here, trying to preserve every second and that clock to Marcus Williams left side lobs it up front and Boston Dawson thought about three here's west on the left with they get knocked down a couple lose jumpers for the west over out of that zone as west will penetrate out of the wing to Williams in traffic little stop the runner is no good.
You can say pretty easily that those outstretched arms of Campbell forced him to alter that shot.
Most to see that the here.
This is the pass download Atkins back to Gibson from the right wing.
The shot is short Kinch got the rebound goes right back up with it got fouled Did they count that basket?
I think they did.
You can't measure this level of experience playing with right now because it's going to take his leadership team back in this thing and to get them on the same page that they lift up.
Jarvis Williams hit with that foul That's his second first team.
They pull back here in the second half second straight to look at Campbell got the rebound to stick back is no big rebound to Dawson and he's on some frontcourt for Mr. Baker You know in the middle not his back is on top of the surface Here's Dawson for three shot no good serve it outside on game long but they get a break the rebound comes out front kick it out on the wing Quentin Davis for three Nice shot that opened it up and they can continue that this couple more times on the floor that will definitely open it up one and it makes it a 4527 ballgame in their semifinal game.
Quinn Davis came off the bench for 22 points, including five three pointers.
Goosen has his shot twice what comes out of the left side and Williams, 50 of that is up there out of you own two Daryl Williams 18 points on the afternoon makes it a 48 to 27 advantage for the Western Crossing bounce pass against Clinton Davis.
Same kind of shot this time.
It's no good here.
You got a whistle inside.
And I really know what Coach Swanson talked about in that time, but they really are beginning to feel a little more of the pressure off, extra pressure to continue to make this west about to make a substitution.
Goodson will come out, Carlos Robertson on the floor and the Patriots three point shooting so far this afternoon.
Westover four for nine.
Mitchell Baker struggling just one of eight, that one that Davis made just a minute ago.
Their first one of the afternoon here you see Davis number 11.
He's in the back.
Gordon gets the ball out of Dawson and he Dawson a61 freshman now top of the team thinks about the jump shot.
That will be a nice shot to this was open out Boston's run in the lane is partially blocked by Campbell Ball brought down taken by Aaron Reed to get him ahead to Williams pitch on the wing right side goes up challenges the shot is up it is good off the glass he just flew right over Eddie Dawson once again he's stepping up his game he's he's filling that leadership quality 320 to go in a 50 to 27 advantage for Westover Jermaine Faxon with the ball works his way in turnaround.
Just look off the rim it is no good rebound Mitchell Baker turn around hook that time is good credit the basket to Jarvis Williams to get on the board there and free throw line and area is definitely open against the zone but they're not taking the shot inside of 3 minutes to go That pressure defense almost causes a turnover.
Westover Got it.
They should call jump ball and they do it a good position.
Arrow is in favor of Westover.
We see that last shot.
Jarvis Williams really working hard inside goes right up against the turnaround hook.
He got the benefit of the drive that's going to continue again inside of 3 minutes.
Here's Aron Reed coming across the line picked up there by West Roberson Looks like a shot those excellent the lob pass inside to Campbell got a whistle that was interesting Campbell didn't miss it so off the floor to the pass is so easy I think Campbell wants to feel the ball a little more.
I think Coach Boston probably wants him to slow the ball a little more and have to be more involved with the offense.
That file against number 15, Tremaine Ferguson picks up his second second team.
Maurice West will check out and the six one senior Anthony Cole comes in for Mitchell Baker.
They almost steal the advanced pass.
Williams able to pull it down three and a half.
Robertson From inside.
Campbell A little giving inside.
Williams goes up to no good.
Campbell has a really great one foot tall things about him, and he has a bone in his hand so used to bend over teams obvious he knows how to find out.
Again, here's Hayward's shot three and his no good rebound ten for Westover fires it up and the floor Aaron Reed brings it front court They go in the corner Williams on the left wing for three He's still feeling it I think I said in the first half Marcus Campbell and Greg Tench get a lot of publicity, a lot of the attention.
But Deron Williams has quietly come with 18 points.
He's showing it, he's showing it.
He's not hesitating on that jump shot once out of a minute, 45 here in the third quarter.
Short jumper.
Isaacson has no good turn to stick back at him.
No good.
The rebound brought down Williams.
Aaron Reed will get the ball to him.
The Robertson here's Robertson on the left on the left wing back out front Aaron Reed tries to spin away from Cole and Lob to Campbell Campbell turns facing the basket short guys shortly Nice is good.
I think it's time he made a good shot.
Who's looking to make a pass?
He made a great decision.
Westover leading it 5529.
There you see almost a minute remaining here in quarter number three.
Here's a steering at the other end.
The first two turnover on Mitchell Baker Robertson doing a good job with some pressure defense of his own.
It goes off the Mitchell player Mitchell Baker player and it will be Patriot basketball he switched over to in this play quite talented proving that time and time again Casey Goodson back on the floor for west over takes the inbounds pass and they're not taking anything for granted they're playing hard basketball gets it all the way hands it off inside to Campbell and what have they called the two officials discuss it amongst themselves is an offensive charge there.
And I'm going to call it against number 20.
Casey Goodson.
He took it hard to go.
The defense defense was really sit there at that time coming on to the floor right now, the six five senior, Jeremy Crawford, he'll replace Marcus Campbell, 54 seconds to play here in the third quarter.
Anthony Cole checks out Morris West, back on the floor for Mitchell Baker, left side starts to make the move, drives out on the wing.
It comes Charlie Ross on the right side in the corner there as he gets it up front with Davis.
That was nice.
Throwing dip in and out.
England's three is no good.
Davis gets a big offensive rebound You know here's West that three is off the mark They are not shy about putting up those threes at all an up and down ballclub that plays a lot of pressure defense and one that shoots a lot of threes.
But they've only made one so far this afternoon.
Crawford the inbound passed a pinch ball goes out of bounds and I thought there might be a foul that time.
On Jarvis Williams checking back in for Westover Isaac Wooden and he'll replace ten so the two big guns so will do supposedly offensively and we see some scores from earlier today the single-A championship Taylor County wins that one going away 5839 the game it was East Hall with a win over Calhoun 7867.
And right now we are with 17 seconds to go here in quarter number three at the coliseum in Macon and it's pretty much been west Dover's ballgame.
They lead it 55 to 29.
Once again, Mitchell Baker forcing the call, a timeout that probably didn't want to call a thing.
Coaches just Boston is going to be concerned again about them breaking just press a little smoother and having an opportunity to create those numbers on the offensive end of the floor.
Daryl Williams, leading the way with 18 points has gone about his business rather quietly today.
Campbell is getting a lot of looks inside and seen a lot of Greg tinge, but it's been a lot of the outside shooting of Daryl Williams today.
Terrific.
I'm totally and most impressed with the young man because his shot is look nice.
He's looked very confident taking and he hasn't hesitated and the pressure defense for Mitchell Baker is for some turnovers.
But the problem is they've not made enough shots on the other end.
They are not converting the best of these convert to stay in the game and they know that you know, they're playing against a really good zone defense, that they're passing the ball, getting open shots that just aren't going into them right now.
Crawford will put it in play and gets it into Robertson.
Iverson works against Hayward, throws it off of Hayward's leg.
It goes out of bounds.
The clock now at 10 seconds the came out extending the pressure this so Crawford will try it again I'm liking the pressure of this defense in the corner Goodson right side for three shots to but not when they score like this it's a 5829 score the buzzer sounds and the third quarter has come to an end.
West over on top of Mitchell Baker, 5829.
Back after this time out.
You're watching coverage on TV funding for a broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball championships is provided in part by the following You're watching the NCAA basketball championships on TV.
And welcome back to the Macon Coliseum.
Dave Cohen, along with Teresa Edwards, sits all west over.
So far, they lead it 58 to 29.
Teresa, as we head into the finals, it is a small game.
It's all or nothing right now.
And Mitchell has to put it out there on the line and give it all they got and see what happens.
But West over there definitely in control.
Charlie Ross the inbounds play comes in and he Dawson rifles in the middle Turner on jumper is up and his good drive as Williams Nice shot in the middle of things here they come out west over against the left pressure defense Westover breaks it nicely though timeout the third quarter and for those who say definitely help them working with the ball is Terry Goodson lobs down low Here's ten in the lane Turner on jump hook off the back of the cylinder Oh good rebound brought down and there's Quintin Davis gets it up again Williams has stretched under his nose once and a little bit too much on it Williams the rebound for the Patriots he's a jumper for the time Goodson back the other way finding some room down low had the shot partially blocked by Ross block for a second time and Ross going to get Wilson for that foul and leave it I say it Westover is not going to roll over here They're going to play some good, more solid basketball because that's what they're disciplined, they've been disciplined to do all season long.
Gary Goodson at the line for Westover.
He misses the first goal, surprisingly enough, for his.
And neither team has shot the ball that well from the free throw line with it.
And fortunately it doesn't bother West over at the moment, but it should haunt Mr. Baker.
Here is Goodson sets for the second attempt in seven points on the afternoon.
You can make it eight and it's a 59 to 31 ballgame in favor of the Patriots.
JOHNSON The bounce pass to Quintin Davis in the corner draws the double team download of Ross Whiteside baseline jumper Nice rebound Oh oh little Maurice West inside got the rebound couldn't get it to go down Aaron Reed with the rebound for the Patriots back the other way We got a whistle and a foul at midcourt maybe a foul out of frustration there for number one Maurice West I think you're right I think they're going to play with a sense of urgency here.
That urgency is going to allow us to play a little too hard.
Got a timeout with 643 to play in a 5931 ballgame.
Didn't get a chance to ask you at halftime, but your basketball career, you played a lot of high school basketball in the state and you played in a number of pressure packed games like this.
What was it like, if you remember back that far and you're asking me, you go way back, way Back.
Actually, it was the most exciting time of my life.
So I can only imagine being in high school again.
It's just the most important.
Life is the biggest game of your life, and to win it must you still like that player on the bench right?
Yes.
And into the huddle for Mitchell Baker.
Hey, tell Guy you got to go to Google Facebook.
Hey, ball.
Oh, it's a lot of movement.
Well, he's gotten a lot of movement.
He's done a lot tonight, especially with that pressure defense.
But if not taking advantage of all their opportunities, they've only hit 13. shot in the game with 640 to go.
They trailed 5930.
Listen on the left wing being chased by Johnson, gets rid of it and it's Daryl Williams and a try that values Greenway above Greg Tim and the loose ball brought down by Williams gets it ahead to West Swinton Davis back to Dawson the runner in the late is good not a lot of arc in that shot Dawson gets it to go down It's a 5933 a nice big shot to get a good mental you have at the moment you don't have time for too many offenses being down the stretch this many points carry Goodson on the right wing brings the ball back out front by minus 6 minutes to play they lock down low the canvas could not hold on the ball goes out of bounds Mitchell Baker to get it back.
You think maybe Campbell's a little funny with everyone down by his knees?
It's a success.
Mitchell Baker.
Charlie Ross goes to the bench, Trumaine Johnson comes in, and Boston will bring it across the line.
There's a pass to stolen by Goodson can have turnovers like that at this stage of the game No that's you can have those can afford those extra stuff and Reed works against a double team and gets fouled.
I don't know about the foul situation either because we lose a lot of games down the line, but their opportunity to go to the line is a little too easy to score buckets.
Sometimes there's the turnover situation.
Surprisingly enough, Westover is four more than Mitchell Baker, but Mitchell Baker trailing in this ballgame.
Aaron Reed side knocks the jumper down once again.
You feel a little momentum and they'll hit a big bucket and knock their out of Dawson.
Top of the circle, bounces it over to Hayward trying to go inside intended for Jarvis Williams ball knocked away and the Patriots have Westover comes back the other direction Williams feeds it on Campbell Williams They did really easy for team and it's a 30 point advantage for Westover Dorsett has the ball stripped to the free throw line and it's a three on one this year.
Daryl Williams comes up with his 21st point of the afternoon as he gets the curtain is up and these guys are ready to have some fun.
Now, they've already felt that they've won this championship even with a little less than 5 minutes.
There.
See that feed inside to Big Marcus Campbell?
Nobody in front of him and he just two handed tomahawk for Campbell on that one.
Just once everybody know what that Jersey number is.
Man of the man.
Believe me, there's not a body in this building that doesn't know who number 11 is.
And that dunk said Tuesday.
So there is a break time out on the floor.
That'll give us time to tell you that the deadline for entries in the Georgia Natural Gas True Blue scholarship has been extended.
It's been extended to April the 16th.
Stay tuned during games for information on nominating a deserving male and a deserving female student athlete.
Down to 4 minutes and 51 seconds to play and 65 to 33 advantage for Westover.
Daryl Williams.
I told you he's kind of the unsung guy today, 23 points, four rebounds.
He's dished out three assists.
But everybody in the building keeping an eye on number 11, the number 21.
I think I've hit my own number 15.
At this moment.
He's playing like a champ, but he's going to have his eye on.
He really loves shooting from those baseline and we invite you to stay with us.
It's been a long day and it's going to get even better.
These state championships still to be decided.
Class four, It'll be Doherty and the Trojans and Raiders.
And then coming up at 9:00 tonight, Savannah's Blue Jackets and the Patriots have burned marks in the last five days.
So two games to go and invite you to stay with us here all afternoon on TV.
So far, we've seen two great ballgames.
We are witnessing one right now, a brief stoppage in play.
I think there is some moisture on the floor down underneath the basket or actually some debris on the floor, I think was Dover's mentality is to have some fun here.
And it's still time and all the good stuff that coach let us get away with.
And you won the state championship a senior, right?
Yes.
Yes.
It was actually an overtime game.
And here comes Mitchell Baker, Morris West frontcourt, hands it off inside to Jarvis.
Williams goes up, tries to get the shot to go in over Campbell to knock the rebound brought down by Daryl Williams his fifth rebound of the afternoon and somebody had to tinge out the wing left side out front.
It's Goodson going to drive the lane.
The funeral is short.
Got a whistle.
It's going to be a blocking foul call against Mitchell Baker's Charlie Ross.
Get a little iffy there.
Another Thunder defense was set that time but it'll look he made it to the line.
That's a good thing and I think those busses are ready for them.
They really do all the systems do well right now.
Ross picks up his third personal carry.
Goodson, the six two senior will shoot the free throws and make a substitution.
Westover Going to bring Aaron Reed out of the ballgame in case he could see will come in a lot of time on the clock.
But they're definitely feeling it, man, deservedly so.
Their film is championship Second free throw, no good hits.
One of the two and Mitchell Baker back the other way.
Eagles turn it over and Hayes is on ten Going to look for that alley oop underneath doesn't work out to be a dunk but he gets the points anyway so it was a great decision to get his feet we this shot and it's a 6839 west over lead here's Morris West lob it up inside shot he that shot blocked by Campbell just at the you know what I would have thought the big man would have brought that ball all the way down the floor Campbell thought he was going to play a little bit of point guard there for a second.
And Miss handles basketball.
That wasn't too bad for a seven footer there, I'll tell you that.
It wasn't too bad at all.
Gary Goodson checks out of the game.
In back of the floor is Isaac Wooden.
So this is really one of their biggest lineups with six six wooden in the seven one center.
Campbell the lob it in the middle comes out of the wing to Dawson.
You can see it on their in their eyes and on their faces are relaxed and just having fun which itself will make you play even better on the right side.
Dawson's three point shot is not no good as touched by Wooden as it goes out of bounds.
Jeremy Crawford The senior checks in also coming back in is number 11.
Quentin Davis You know, that's the thing that you and I talked about before we got on here this afternoon was just how much of a senior laden ballclub this West team is.
They are.
And with Coach Lawson, return is going to be a lot of pressure on the Knicks coach wasn't seeing the way they were talking so Smith is just going to step right into that role with Davis missed a three the ball chased down picked up by Derrick Hayward here's Nickerson in the lane kicks it out him down to Dawson Oh oh no oh Boston looking for some movement all the way Tries to split the double team with his two defenders down low in wooden and Crawford and there was also a foul one of them this team has not giving up and I know you can appreciate that with a young team like this and Coach McDuffie It does he does an example.
His coach gleefully disciplined and nothing to be ashamed of.
I tell you what a brilliant win in the last three state titles and we're going out there collectively.
I think this is great.
Oh, it's been a huge afternoon for Jarell Williams, 24 points as he checks out of the game.
Free throws by Dawson are good.
It's a 6835 advantage for the patriots of Westover Just over 3 minutes to go here's Isaac Woods trying to get some points drives the shot as good to five he made it everybody's going to try to get a piece of this championship before it's over.
One foul call against Jerrick Haywood as his first Isaac went to the line two tries for the three point play.
And you know, he wants that one back.
Oh, yes, he so suffice to say he does not complete the three point play.
And he will remember the physical ball picked up as they let it roll.
Haywood gets it in the corner, gets it back to Carolina.
The ball is not loose, picked up by Goodson and a turtle run.
Mitchell Baker there continues that pressure.
They get the ball up ahead, get the ten second call.
So the pressure defense forcing the turnover does pays off.
That's a reward in running the point right now in for the first time today is number ten.
Maurice Clemmons, the senior kick in the corner.
Quentin Davis going to fire from three shot is good.
But as I said, when Davis had a big, big ballgame for them in their semifinal game, five three pointers, 22 points.
But he's going to they them in the second half here.
Here's a runner on the other end Davis down with the rebound and a little oh and he goes in front court around the screen in the corner Quentin Davis again for three his yes he's telling me I can shoot it.
This is what I can shoot in his third three pointer trying to come up with a steal on the inbounds pass they call a jump ball.
And as we look across court, the possession arrow is in favor of Westover 70 to 41 Westover leading Mitchell Baker well, had 2 minutes to go in the ballgame.
Gibson gets it across the good hill, going all the way, get the layup slip and two easy twist over here at the end.
Derek Well, the left wing gets it back to the lady, comes to Dotson, one of the three Here's Carolina for three top of the key shot is up no good rebound taken by West over Casey Goodson gets it ahead to Carlos Robertson for his Clemons shoots for the first time it's been good the offensive rebound by Crawford and the tip in is good 74 to 41.
Here's Quinn Davis again one of those in high arcs, three point shots, rainbow threes.
Like it didn't fall that time minute nine to go and there's been a timeout called and the crowd can sense it and it is an opportunity for everyone to touch the ball today and still this championship down to a minute nine to go in a 74 to 41 ballgame.
And really you talk about this game today and it's been not so much the big names of Greg tension Crawford not Crawford but Marcus Campbell though they both played well a lot of Daryl Williams today, 20 points since I thought this was really bullet he has great leadership.
He stepped up at a time when they had a small lull, and he really has done it quite as far as being a leader is a great aggressiveness.
You know what he's doing is obvious and he's had a great coach.
I feel good for Coach Boston over there.
I think it's a wonderful opportunity for his teammates and star.
And when you've got good players, you can't underestimate the value of senior leadership again.
And they have a lot of that on this team.
Though they come back on the floor, they have an opportunity to get a lot of the folks in the ballgame.
This gives them an opportunity to roll over their experience, the ones that are in the game.
Kennedy Miller controls the balls.
They bring it, cross the line and speed it up in the middle of the field.
There's a short jumper and there's no good rebound.
Rod Green, Sophomore and the ball knocked out of bounds by Carolina.
It's also an opportunity look see what's he going to have to work with next season I think West over to put it in play comes in to Rodriguez off down low Larry Fields goes up and well this young team even down on their even on the bench has just been playing nice pass and looking for the open man creates an easy bucket 35 There's a long air ball on the other end Anthony Miller controls it gets it ahead to Wingfield on down inside everybody's trying to get in on the action here almost a steal on the other end by green Good hustle by green to get back it Very nice pass fun and man a little under the block creating that little zipper for easy frontcourt inbounds pass comes into Nice race Carolina 10 seconds to go in the game in the corner Quentin Davis another three good I think that's his fist as he accepts it and the buzzer is going to sound New York State champions the patriots of Westover win their 2019 to the season.
They go to 29 and three really Boston up as the state champion once again.
Teresa in style, I'm sure.
Deservingly so.
Man, he's getting a lot of stages, players and players have a lot of respect for him.
And they love their guy.
They love him.
Look at the guy in the middle.
Big number 11, Marcus Campbell headed to Mississippi State.
He's going to go out of state champion right now.
Let's send it courtside to John Nelson John.
Thanks, coach.
There's a hackneyed phrase we use in this business.
How do you feel when we're asking a question?
But I got to ask you today, how does it feel?
I have mixed emotions it's just beginning to dawn on me that I've just coached my last game at Westover.
I've been involved in organized basketball ever since I was seven years old.
I was over 50 years ago.
I'm going to miss it.
I've enjoyed the years.
They've worked hard for me, but I feel real good about going out with the State championship.
Like I've said all year, that you've got to remember that last game and on the way, that last game could be a win.
You got to win the state championship and I can't think of a better way to go out.
You did it like John Elway did it.
Really?
Boston, it's been a pleasure.
I appreciate your time.
The guy's got a laundry list.
The only thing that was missing was the partridge in a pear tree.
And he'll get that at Christmas when it comes to his coaching accolades.
Guys, back to you.
I put you on.
Coach Boston goes out with a bang.
Hey games coming up later on today on TV.
The quad, a championship.
It should be a really good one.
Dani takes on maize that begins at 7:00 here on TV.
That's followed by the first five eight championship game ever.
Savannah taking on Burke, Ma.
Hope you've enjoyed it.
