Eight games down, two more to go as championship weekend rolls on here on TV.
Welcome back, everybody.
I'm Jim Jochem.
The Red Elephants won state championships in 94 and 2000 won.
Perry is looking for their first state title.
Do people to call it courtside?
Dave Gardner and Teresa Edwards.
All right.
Thanks, Jim.
Again, we hear a four time Olympic gold medalist, Teresa Edwards, as we get ready for triple-A girls action.
Indeed, a Gainesville team that's been here before.
As Jim said, and Perry, a team riding a lot of momentum.
They're coming off a big, minor upset victory, I guess, over Westminster last night.
Who came out of that game 30 and oh so a west of so a Perry nonetheless ready to rock and roll.
A lot of good athletes on the court.
Perry upset queens of the tournament.
They were upset.
It was Mr. Undefeated team this season.
Also you got Gainesville.
Average winning margin is 35 points a game.
So it's going to be an interesting game and I think they can make it happen.
And this is the big girl that's going to make it happen if it's going to happen tonight.
Averaged 20 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots.
A game she's missed everything all state All-America.
If you ask me.
Yeah.
Arguably the best player in the state of Georgia right now and one of them in the country and they're going to look at the starting five.
Laura Niles, get the start underneath Hendrix, Humphrey, Westmoreland and Mandy Smith, number 20 to be a senior getting the start the A five on the floor for the Gainesville Riddell offense and they're going to look at the lady Panthers that's number 11 for team is tripling averaging ten points a game six rebounds one assists two steals.
She's the senior leader.
She's going to be all over the course.
She's going to work hard all night.
She's part of the upset squad and they're going selection Tina Davis Stripling And that is Moremi Davis number three Williamson Mitchell the five on the floor for the Panthers.
Let's go ahead and join our play announcer for the starting lineups The home team.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the main event.
Let's get ready to rumble.
Oh, have your attention for the starting lineup.
First, four games for that forward a five foot nine junior.
Number 14, Carlos Hendrix at Forward, a six foot three junior, number 32, Hudson Hook free at center, a five foot ten junior.
Number 34.
Lauri, Mario at guard, a five foot four, senior number 22, Mandy Smith at guard, a five foot four senior number 21 player with smaller and your games, Gainesville head coach Manson.
He'll end now for your Perry Panthers at forward a five foot nine senior number 11 but came strictly at forward a five foot ten junior number 21 Santino Davis at guard a five foot eight senior at number 22, Jesse Mitchell at guard, a five foot six junior.
Number 24, Remigio Williams at Center, a six foot junior.
Number 33, Maury Davis and your Perry head coach John, can you referee for tonight's game for Bill McNamara Per well, there you have it triple action set and ready from the make it center flex live right here on TV girls triple play action coming up next broadcast of USA Basketball on TV is made possible in part by the following corporate partners.
You're watching the USA Basketball State Championships on TV, the final girls state championship of the weekend.
Get ready First, let's throw it down to our man on the baseline.
That's John Nelson.
Thanks to a couple of quick notes.
We'll start with the Perry Panthers.
John Chance.
It's his first year ever coaching women's basketball and all he knew about Tasha Humphrey coming into today was that she was, in his words, a really good player fashion statement where Gainesville is concerned.
Look at head Coach Manson.
Hill That's the same outfit that he was wearing yesterday, same time he hasn't lost wearing that tie at all this season.
And this is how he's going to try and finish the streak for this entire season.
Back to you guys.
Hey, superstitions, I guess sometimes, you know, you take them where you wanted to go.
I guess.
You know, I don't fool with that one.
Well, speaking of streaks, Perry has won 16 straight ball games, so they're looking to keep that streak going.
And we are underway.
triple-A Girls Action Live in May get a little back and forth there on the opening tip as the Lady Panthers in white.
If that's all the basketball, that's any indication of how the game is going to be.
We don't know yet.
Congratulations to Mitchell Baker's boys.
They won the championship.
So we're going to look at our special there, McNair Able and breaking Harper on the floor for this trip away championship shot off the mark there brought down by miles of Gainesville and the lady elephants bring it across and a 21 Sarah Westmoreland does a lot of the ball handling for Gainesville.
Interesting match up on the ball.
Santos to Humphrey Humphrey from outside takes the first shot in and out of there and you'll see Humphrey a big girl like her normal playing inside that she can hit from all over the floor.
Oh, see the one, two, three, four, five.
She's the first high school player I ever seen that could play five positions.
Meanwhile, the Lady Panthers on the other end trying to counter that.
Santino Davis, 21, with it up top.
Gainesville will definitely play a zone very.
Does they have the reputation of not being a great outside city team so they will definitely force the issue.
You penetrate a lot against the zone tonight several Davis is on the roster for Davis is on the roster for Parrish two of them out there right now as Cassie Mitchell pulls up little baseline and hits nice shot catches one of their finishes Yeah they do have on the outside there's points in the ballgame Lady Panthers lead a to nothing that's Miles with it over to Mandy Smith thought about pulling the trigger from three point line but held up Humphrey got it and they're going to get to Williams for a push there.
I'll tell you what really cool Williams has her work cut out for her garden.
Toss it.
It's going to be a really good job tonight at this quite a so outsized Westmoreland underneath and two Niles won't go and the other way Jerry off and running two on to and good hustle by Westmoreland getting back in transition Good hustle great defense way to get a hand in there and break up that fast break Coach Manson here and there you going to look at that time the good luck tie, if you will.
Coach Hill in his 15th season at Gainesville.
Well, yes, Tasha Humphrey on his team.
How much work do you need?
Tina Davis driving puts up a floater there in the lane.
Won't go ball still loose underneath and a foul going to be called That's Marina Davis number three the A junior to win up with it they're averaging 13 points this year.
She's really been the big scorer She has been awesome throughout the playoffs In the tournament she played scored 19 points just last night in the big game.
She will be a big factor tonight here in times in the paint.
This is on the first free throw attempt there here of course out of region four trip away.
And as you get a look at Davis Davis case it's the second of two and hits on that one.
So once the two on that trip for Davis backcourt pressure now by Berry they get it in there Miles across midcourt surprisingly looking like Sam Perry putting on that full court press in Gainesville gets one straight over the top of it and it with a simple pass move.
Complete it down.
Maggie Smith missing the three on the other end.
Fontenot Davis back in the lane kicks it out three point shot for Cassie Mitchell too strong and Humphrey with the ball brings it down now ahead great outlet pass Miles puts it up and in nice tough start by Lauren Miles That was a great finish Great court awareness by Thompson Humphrey getting that ball out through he's been big all year long and Gainesville is a team that does have some depth all season Jamaica surely and wanted Demps key to Waller.
So the big story of freshman has really been in here for Gainesville in these playoffs along with Humphrey and Fowler going to be called on Humphrey right there.
Do you think that's kind of maybe some strategy tonight for Perry, maybe trying to take it to toss to get in foul trouble?
I mean, what do you do with.
Well, I would I mean, that would be the smart thing to do in all touch it really had to do was keep her hands straight.
She was definitely in great position to make a clean block.
But so she reached over to created the foul.
But of course, they should definitely place an attack now soon as possible in as much as possible.
Brittney Davis, back of the line, misses on the first one.
I don't think Marina Davis is anything, you know, in style or anything.
I think she plays she's done a great job to have 13 points all season long.
She can make it happen two of four and two trips at the free throw line for Davis.
And now that one going to be kicked away.
Last touch, though, by Perry, 30 Panthers, 29 and two, as you look at Coach John Chance, first season at the helm and right here in the state championship.
You got to love that.
Hey, Coach, you better renew that contract right now.
And they're going to look at 10 to 23 there for Gainesville into the lineup.
That is key to Waller, the freshman that we were just talking about, who's ten alone very well playing really well for Gainesville at ten points in round three against Elbert County had 11 and the semifinal matchup against Dodge County, in which Gainesville won 6528.
Airball There is not quite the microwave yet, and that's going to come in and school that quick from that far out, I don't think unless you are the microwave professor talking about tradition of course period with 16 straight wins.
But their boys and girls programs have really taken off.
They've been solid throughout the years and always an excellent job done by those very coaches.
Here's a shot from outside three point shots and Tina Davis off the mark and Westmoreland grabs it.
Humphrey will bring it across there.
Girl runs the floor a little bit.
She'll take it all the way.
Oh, he's going to draw the foul there.
Good hard foul by by Davis not to shying away at all there.
It wasn't a smart foul.
She wasn't in position.
I think she mostly could be a the target mama.
But that was really not a smart slot.
She was already beat.
Should have let it go.
She's going to be a big factor in the game.
Should Tina Davis need to stay focused, make some smart decisions because her team really needs her, especially with her penetration that she gives them in the half court.
Just given that last shot, if she'd be a little patient and wait on that outside shot as opposed to looking in between the gaps penetrate and looking for something to happen because, you know, they're not going to knock down these outside shots that easy pump for two of two on that last trip and that one stolen away by Mandy Smith.
Nice job by the lady elephants on defense there with that turnover.
Now they're in position inside a free spin move.
They're knocked away and it will be Perry basketball.
Ivy Panthers come up with it last touch by game.
Look, it's almost like you're waiting for toss 100.
You just take off here in a second.
Makes you did Moses Definitely getting opportunities to put the ball up in great position.
She's averaging well over 20 points on the year and a lot of folks don't realize that she's only a junior.
Yeah, I'm going to have to continue.
Like she's been around a long time to look at inside them or Amy Davis keeping that ball alive there.
It kicks it back out to Mitchell.
Tell you what, Davis has given her a job to work with in the paint there into the corner, which will sort it out.
The three now back on the other end.
WILLIAMS And back up top of Davis.
You know, we've seen a lot of good basketball players, girls, basketball players throughout the years in the state of Georgia, seeing some of the best ones here in last year's a team that's a real baker and you know, Sparkle Davis applied and of course the Boston girl Westminster.
But to tell you what so fast Humphrey is certainly grabbing a lot of headlines and it seems like kind of goes back to what we talked about in the Double-A game about the level of competition, girls basketball, great effort on defense getting back.
Look at that three, five block by Davis that's he actually set that up flying in the air inside Humphrey going to draw the foul they're going to call it on Tennessee Mitchell first and the team's third Some early sales coming in here with some big time players.
That could be a key factor later in the game.
But then Coach Chance, of course, Perry making their way through state beating west side Augusta tackle county west over and round three and then the semifinals 5248 over Westminster team that was 30 you know coming in that was a school record wins for Westminster Very good team great bunch of young men played very hard 5 to 4 Gainesville with a one point lead back on the other end.
That was Stripling, who followed her own Miss and unable to get the foot back there.
But Davis keeps it alive and that would knock down a foul.
Going to be called now.
I'm Peter Waller and things are out of balance.
A lot of speed on this Perry team.
Very quick, very quick, very athletic.
I used to I'm waiting for them to really get become really aggressive on the offensive end of the court to really attack.
But they're going to they're going to keep your team sheets, you know, up top.
And she's going to handle that ball majority of his game and she's going to look to penetrate.
That's just their game plan, which will look at inside.
And it got Davis underneath and she hits Maurine Davis.
They can always go to plan B, get it inside.
Today, just a little backward pressure here by Perry.
That's Mandy Smith is able to dribble across, penetrate inside They're looking to get it into Waller Ball loose jump ball possession Arrow will stay with Gainesville That was a great close by management She had a great opportunity looking in the basket, trying to create some attention so she could get that ball to a teammate to get that layup.
She's got a hand on.
Westmorland, puts it in play from underneath her own goal there.
Waller Back outside to Mandy Smith.
Smith I see you certainly been a good floor leader for this lady elephant team Gainesville with a lot of history too, on the Boys and Girls side of the court.
Well, Smith is a very solid, confident player not to take any credit from Thompson's teammates because she actually feels like she has a much better team there.
All that contributed and have a great season together actually.
Asked which team she preferred to play last night and she said she really wanted a chance to play was Minnesota, but it didn't matter because her team was playing so well.
And lastly, by Mandy Smith, off the mark, off the inbound, the wall was there.
I shot back that that was more in Myles number 34 with another bucket Little bit of pressure there by Gainesville momentarily Santino Davis on the other end lays it up too strong Stripling trying to get the follow on another jump ball and possession early this time to her and that's the type of player Stripling is she will be scrappy.
She will be around the boards, will be around loose balls and you got to look at Ashley Fairfax.
They're number 15, the hero of last night's semifinal games.
They take three point shot from the corner.
The courage it took for her to throw up three pointer that point in time in the game.
I'll tell you what, she had been having trouble breaking the press and doing some other things, but Coach Chant stuck with her.
Yes, he did, but managed to put a lot of pressure on her.
He had many, many turnovers last night and she really kept her head in the game very with the turnover.
Davis And as Mitchell who puts that by the point those ball still loose and I believe they can get Westmorland for the foul that'll be her first and Perry's really struggling trying to find some type of offense.
Sometimes you don't really get too into the game.
They are really looking like this and a little frustrated and I think she's definitely causing problems in the paint.
But execution is going to be a key factor here.
Execute just executing plays and see what happened.
Fairfax up top over to Davis in the corner and we said up top 115 to go in the opening quarter in the trip away girl state championship off the mark there by Stripling Humphrey brings it down to bring it across she will pull it for three nice little crossover how it might have been Bardsley tip there I don't know but it's showing the basket at Berry off and running on the other end under a minute to go and that shot by Davis off the mark too strong off the glass and gains with it now down court on the other end Mandy Smith on the receiving end of that Humphrey pass Smart decision by Mandi set it up Get under control get the team together.
Nice job.
Slower paced, low scoring first quarter, just 7 to 6 here.
34 seconds left and a whistle away from the ball.
Toss it.
Ask the official to call that like look, she was down to her knees guarded That's a foul on Fairfax and a little bit of a size mismatch there I guess, between those two.
But, you know, she's not going to back down.
Fairfax, the sophomore, just doesn't seem to have seen the matter.
Who's guarding, I tell you, is going to be a size advantage giving the talk to Humphrey a little frustration, I'm sure.
Tina Davis, she's missed a lot of shots, as you know, There's no need for her to get out of character, pick up a weak side like that because Thomas is going to be here all game.
So she needs to stay on the court for a team.
Humphrey run around, I guess about six foot three or so definitely or so.
Every bit of that and the whistle there, foul going to be called once again on theory and the Lady Panthers picking up some quick fouls here that one on Stripling Marshall Spirit of course coming into this match up the number four team in the state Gainesville ranks fifth most teams are pretty much been there all year long in that top five spot in as Marina Davis steps back in for Perry and Stripling will take a seat.
30 seconds left here in quarter number one and a turnaround off the inbound and a tough shot there by Taurus Hendricks.
Nice execution on an out of bounds play.
They just turned around, converted a nice bucket back on the other end.
Now, 16 seconds left knocked away Hendricks trying to come up with the Steelers didn't quite keep it in play, though, but a nice effort.
They gave those building a momentum.
They're feeling confident.
They're playing really great defense, hands in the passing lane and moving to communicate.
Davis off the inbound lays it up and in for Tasha Humphrey sitting on the bench with his last 32nd.
That was amazing.
She just pulled up from the top and a shot.
Still a couple seconds left there.
I don't think Westmoreland had to add that thing up quite so quick.
There is still a second on the clock and kind of goes back to what we were talking about in that first game.
These teams used to have it scoreboard at their home gyms but here and make it of course, you got the big one right here in the middle and they're unable to see the time there.
So it's kind of deceiving.
Couldn't take a timeout.
That's the end of one nine day games here with a one point lead.
We'll be right back with quarter number two right after this broadcast of USA Basketball on TV is made possible in part by the following corporate partners.
You're watching TV bringing you the best.
You're watching the USA Basketball state championships on TV.
They've gone or and Teresa Edwards back with you here and the girls triple-A championship games, but with a one point lead after a quarter.
Let's go ahead, throw it on down to John Nelson.
John, what's going on?
Thanks, Dave.
You spend a lot of time in both huddles as we get ready for the next 8 minutes.
Manson Hill of Gainesville basically said they have three offensive rebounds.
We have nine.
We've got to get to the boards offensively, where Perry's concerned.
They were saying don't be such in a rush to close the deal.
We've got the league, we got plenty of time in this ballgame.
Back to you.
All right.
And Humphrey, with just three points in that first quarter, oh, for three on the field there, you can look at the field goal situation here.
That's what's really curious.
And this year I'm curious about right now is why both teams are struggling.
I don't know if his jitters or what they're going to look to Humphrey their off the pass follows their own miss and lays it in there.
I think the 30 seconds at the end of the last quarter is going to help Carter really think about what's going on after going over three in the first quarter.
That is a good question.
As we mentioned, you know, a lot of low scoring ballgames this year.
I don't know.
Good defense cases have certainly been quick.
They've been up and down the floor, but not a lot of still goes there.
The bank shot there, David Davis, nice drop a nice, nice low jumper he throws back on the other end Gainesville with the numbers two on one swatted away by Grady Davis I like that block a little authority there Stripling on the other end knocked away from behind good also by Gainesville but a big play defensively on the other end by Perry not only a good block that's not only a good block she came up with the steal that's great basketball playing right here off the inbound knocked away there but gassy Mitchell in position for it's between the Davis with it looking inside trying to work it in there to Davis knocked away taken away by Humphrey it's going to be really hard for them to lob that ball into the paint all night with caution.
So they're going to have to get out and make some really solid bounce passes and get the ball in the post, forcing the issue a little bit there.
So Perry with it in Region seven, triple-A is where Gainesville plays have a trick play against for triple-A right here Davis trying to work it inside there knocked away their double seven Davis in the paint We got Santina Davis trying to pass to the other Davis inside the paint, but she's really getting too close.
Is there a double team in here?
As soon as she gets the ball and she's trying to go over the top, if she backs it out, create some space to really have an opportunity to make a nice bounce pass and it'll be a one on one because of that.
Davis In the paint back on the other end there lady elephants able to break it a little shot there too strong won't go Perry back and running on the other end 1110 still a one point ballgame Pull up jumper not there they follow Mitchell puts it up too strong and gains what comes out of there with a magic Henson number 12.
I'll tell you what Perry is not shy about shooting Nope that doesn't get up.
Tosses causing problems.
Any time you shoot it in their areas, you really he's the one people shots off and that one tip the way back the other way now Perry with the turnover that's Mitchell Drake with the foot race to the hole there Tassie Mitchell at the bucket that's Perry's game They play the school for defense trying to create turnovers so that they can have fast break opportunities just like that And Westmoreland lost the handle on it go back the other way.
So Perry making the most of some turnovers here in the second quarter and that's going to get a timeout ball by Coach Hill 32nd timeout called by the Gainesville Lady elephants who come into this matchup at 29 and three overall.
But we hope you're enjoying this broadcast of the GHC class triple-A Girls State Championship and you can show your appreciation and support by becoming a member of GPA, TV.
It's easy and totally secure by going to our website.
It w w w dot gpb dot org And thanks for supporting high school sports on TV.
Go ahead, throw it on down once again to Jon Nelson.
Really quick, you two who talked about jitters it's probably half right for Gainesville is concerned they purposefully played a tough schedule and remember their regionals were in the dome so they're used to goofy lights and bigger crowds.
For Perry's concerned, Ashley Fairfax actually had headaches yesterday because of the stress of the ballgames here in the Macon policy.
And so it's for Perry.
Yes, Gainesville, not so much.
Guys, back to you.
That's a good point.
There's a nice little shot there by Santino Davis.
He gets another one to go out the glass and another big basket.
So you had a big game yesterday as well.
Good thing.
I'm glad to see you're calmed down and make these things happen.
All mouth is against Perry foul on the other end there.
As John said, a tough schedule for Gainesville this year.
They actually played Westminster a little early in the season.
A lot of folks have penciled in the lady Wildcats as the state champion this year after being 30.
You know, Barry, of course, knocking them off last night.
And that's another thing, too.
These teams are turning around after one night.
So they played last night.
Normally they've all been on Thursday, they've had a day or so to prepare.
And the championship this year though, triple AA quick turnaround.
Yeah, I'm sure that's going to play a factor as the game goes along to kind.
I wonder how those legs are going to go up in that fourth quarter.
You got to understand that everyone has to go through it.
So I think the storm's going to survive this one for miles at the on this and on the first and is able to get the second one.
They're one of two on the trip First, I guess, you know, throughout the year you're used to playing at Friday's Saturdays schedule in a lot of cases, especially with tournaments and things like that.
So it shouldn't be too much of a transition.
Hey, kids, they're young.
Oh, my God.
What is going on with the rainbow?
Jump off the bat.
Three at such a big three point shot there.
It's 16 to 12.
Perry for the four point lead, 5 minutes to go and a half.
They like that glass here on this last few shots.
I got to say, we're quite surprised to see him in the lead at this moment in the game.
I'll tell you, the house with it up top gets rid of it.
Henson, just a sophomore in there.
Number 12 and a shot outside of Henson three point shot of Hendricks big shot five points now for Hendricks the junior.
He was raised waiting on that shot to death.
He looked like he was going to make it.
Oh, look at that ball working.
Oh, Davis, that was great moments.
Great pass.
Got to draw the foul there.
That's one of those where you want the the bucket and the foul if you can get it to go but couldn't quite get that shot to fall that was definitely an end one opportunity great awareness good ball movement he reads back there Ball never touched the floor.
Exactly.
Read the defense.
So it was back at the line two of four in the early going, the junior averaging 13 points this year and off the back of the line on the first one you got to show in the bigs is going to get fouled last.
He's got to start draining these free throws is going to be a factor.
This is not the game that you want to see.
Take that line.
You may not expect column if you're going to get a free throws and it frees Miller because you look at they the six points so far three boards the team is trickling back into the ball game for Perry.
Meanwhile Mandy Smith and Catherine Hurst in for Gainesville in these big jump shots in the fourth.
But they go found out they didn't have to call them, you know, so they were going right to it at time.
Westmoreland's just kept up alive.
Humphrey For three off the front of the iron.
No good.
Mandy Smith gets it out of there and resets for Gainesville.
Terry is doing a really, really good job containing Thompson.
Humphrey, which is very surprising in this game.
Tonight is beginning to feel the pressure of not scoring for a team.
She's bringing it down on the offensive end, facing the pressure as she's looking to score.
And that's going to be a bit much right now to see that herself get into a rhythm, a play free, just one of six from the field here in this first half.
And when you're used to scoring 20 plus points a game, that can be quite frustrating early, early in the game.
Cassie Mitchell with the bucket there for Perry and the lead is back to four now and foul going to be called on Mitchell It looks like a second test is one of those scrappy hustle plays ten fouls to give skid she plays like she has because she's going to be all over this.
She's not let myself be intimidated because she's very confident about her team.
And one night you're looking at a team victory.
You got one, two, three, for starters.
That average definitely.
I think maybe we've been sleeping on them, but they've had a great year and they have a good team.
Without a doubt.
Ashley Fairfax in the lineup that's 18 fouls, one and one steal for the lady elephants as Humphrey gets the first one to fall with that pass to Humphrey tonight and two of two so seven points for Humphrey.
And most of that has come at the free throw line back to a two point game.
342 to play.
He painted these numbers there.
He came up with the big steal.
Maggie Smith scored on the shot.
But the lady elephants keep it alive.
Smith up top with it.
I like the bowling man.
These hands.
She seems to have really, really good control of this team.
Humphrey For three once again short.
Lauren Miles there on the foul draws the foul.
Davis trunk jerks her hands back.
That's too late.
You know, Davis, you can't leave behind someone.
They will not give you a blocked shot from behind.
Believe that one out of there for miles.
And we're going to look at the breaking number 14, the a sophomore who checks in how 32nd time I'm going to be calling you get a look at Miles.
There.
So those teams want to talk things over here.
319 to go, one point lead for Perry.
We talk about the level of competition.
Of course, Gainesville playing not only Westminster and some non regional games, but when you look at the region that they're in, Fannin County is a team that is ranked in the top ten east.
All was tense.
So a lot of good competition in that area and it's hard enough just making it through.
You read the schedule, then you've got teams like Westminster and folks like that you're playing along the way as well.
So they certainly have to feel like they're prepared coming into this one.
But very, very athletic, maybe the most athletic team that faced all year and maybe a factor that the margin of victory at 35 points plus a game when it's so easy all season long, winning even coming up into this point in last night's game, they won quite easy.
You know, in the face.
A team like Perry, whose has a momentum playing very well together, playing very confident, has upset some teams and rightly so, deserves to be in this championship game.
They're not just going to roll over and give it to him.
That would off the back of the iron there first keeps it alive to strong though on the board and Fairfax out of there with that Ashley Fairfax the sophomore here sitting that big three point shot last night in the semifinal win over Westminster 5248 and Fairfax from outside.
A little short on that one.
They're doing some great things.
You're doing the right thing.
That was a great read of taking the ball out to the open players.
You did the right thing taking the shot.
You just got to find a way to put it in the basket.
So Gainesville, with a now triple-A Girls State championship is gone, along with Teresa Edwards, four time gold medalist, five time Olympian, former Bulldog.
There you go, age in former could mean anything at community with us.
I know it's the five Olympics as well.
You know, I guess that is a that once again I think touches to consider going in the paint, getting a rhythm, a play, a lot of stuff to be a little more aggressive.
The those boxes that are close in a more confidence building and trying to get the game with some three point lead.
Davis missing miles on the other end kicks it back out to smaller Mack top to hers too pulls the trigger off the mark and traveling going to be called on King who got tangled up there with Davis.
So the ball will come back down.
The floor gets a chance.
Perry and a turnover there and last touched off the back up tossup race so Perry will end up with the ball anyway.
Turnovers are mounting up.
Both teams.
Now, when you take a look at what what Humphrey has done in the playoffs, 24 points against towers, if you look at the turnover picture there, Gainesville was seven here with five, they're mounting up.
They're going to be a big make a big difference that in the game both teams take control and take care of that ball.
Back on the other end of Williams almost lost the handle on that one Back up top now as you were saying, Humphrey, 24 points against towers in round two and 19 rebounds in that ballgame and 21 points against Elbert County and 27 in the series last night against Dodge Ball.
They're making some really long lasting passes that could easily get picked off there.
Really take care of the ball shot from outside off the mark and take it away.
Fats Waller who came up with it.
Humphrey pushes ahead.
Mandy Smith saves it as a great pass to Jackson Mandy, just couldn't control and a foul going to be called on the lady elephants going to be on miles for some folks worked their whole life to get to this point as a state state championship coach and coach John Chance in his first season.
So he'll Tunisia.
I'll tell you what we won't say he did work for it.
No I know that has done a great job.
Probably hasn't even sunk in yet.
First off, with the basketball things getting physical knocked away inside Humphrey up with it, three struggling in their offense once again.
And if he puts up the stock hits the Humphrey nice little hesitation in the middle of the paint just locked it up there.
They've been quite easy.
Nine points for Humphrey, only his second field goal though of this first half, two of ten but still good.
She needs to get inside the paint, take a little soft jumpers as opposed to trying to force a game on the outside perimeter.
Three point range and that one taken away by Humphrey Gainesville one point lead 2019 under 30 seconds to play in the half spin move.
Oh nice pass underneath.
Great read came out talking as he drove at least two or three defenders.
A man was wide open.
That was a great, great feed.
There.
Humphrey has been more of a quarterback tonight making a lot of those long passes down the floor.
He does carry and wears a lot of different hats on this team.
He doesn't do whatever he has to do and play whatever position he has to play night in and night out.
So she's very used to Williams back in for Perry and Hurst, back end for Gainesville.
Niles missing on the first and the second one off out there.
The first good hustle.
Can't get the shot to go on the boards there and lay Panthers back and running the other way.
12 seconds now could be a nice possession going in the half time.
The Panthers trailing by one trying to play for the final bucket and the lead and they got it right there Nice window for a nuclear Williams with a shot that's great going into halftime with a big shot like that they'll come out with but more confidence so the Perry Lady Panthers from Perry Georgia with a one point lead 21 to 20 over Gainesville the lady elephants led most of that first half but Perry with the lead right there on that bucket.
Let's watch that again.
It was a beautiful shot.
Beautiful.
She had a high art throwing that shot.
There's no way it wasn't going ahead.
Throw it on down to John Nelson, who's standing by with Coach Dave.
Thank you a lot.
You know, you're making this look easy so far.
Great collapsing defense and you're keeping them in check so far.
Gainesville, where they're concerned offensively, girls play hard to rotate through defensively, trying to let girls take turns on to keep fresh legs on her.
They've done a great job, man.
She's a great ball player.
Every one of them have had to work hard just to compete with It was it is what you're going to expect where Tasha was concerned or no doubt about it, she smooth silk, she handles the ball well.
She's tough to contain.
We've got to keep that same top answer right there for the second half.
And then you got to light the late jumper before the buzzer.
Now, looks like you've got the momentum heading to the second 60 minutes.
Oh, that was a great shot by many.
It was a big lift for us offensively.
Once again, I thought we started to get stagnant a little bit on offense, but we're moving the ball better and hopefully we can get some shots to fall.
All right, head coach John Chance go back and do some work.
He's got the one point lead as we head to the second half.
Back to you, Dave.
All right.
The Lady Panthers had a4888 take it on Gainesville for the triple-A championship.
We'll be back after this broadcast of USA Basketball on TV.
TV is made possible in part by the following corporate partners.
You're watching the USA Basketball State Championships on TV.
And welcome back to the Macon Coliseum.
Halftime Perry leads Gainesville 21 to 20.
There you see the boys warming up for the three eight championship to follow It's Heart County and East Palm.
Jim talking with you on championship weekend This is a game nine.
We have one more to follow and then we wrap up championship weekend right here on TV.
For now let's go downstairs to John Nelson.
John thanks.
Gee it's game nine, but for me it's principals five and six.
Bobby Griffin, a Perry High School, Dave Shoemaker, Gainesville High School.
Start over here with the Rookie and ask how things are going with you so far.
Let's talk about Perry and how Perry high schools kind of were you?
How surprising is this?
How cool is this that you guys have made it here to the Coliseum where we knew we had a good group of young ladies.
They've been playing well for the last couple of years and we knew they had the ability to get here.
They just had not made it.
We're just very proud of them and and our school and our community for coming together and for us being able to be here tonight to participate in this great event.
You know, the way things seem is for me in my travels to bigger towns may not necessarily get wrapped up in this as much as the smaller towns.
How has Perry responded to how things happen with the fans?
Immunity has been great this week.
The spirit of the school has been great.
I couldn't have asked for a community to support it our kids any better than they have this week.
All right.
Let's go to the other side now.
Let's come over here and talk to the experienced veteran we hooked up two years ago when Tasha was a mere freshman.
Now she's a junior named Shoemaker.
What's it been like for Gainesville this time around getting here, the college scene?
Well, Gainesville, you know, is as proud of its athletic program, its academic program and fine arts program.
And John, getting back here to Macon and in the finals, you know, it's kind of routine for us.
And so what we want to do, we want to leave here tonight another state champion.
So in our community, John, are our fans and all the red elephants that are out there love what we're doing right now.
We've got a great group of girls.
Coach Hale's done a great job.
They've been together a long time.
And so our expectations are to win and I expect strong to come to make it come to make it every year.
Now, with the way things have been with the elephants, you know, it's a storied high school and a storied program, I guess.
Talk about how Gainesville has kind of taken the identity of the of the school and of the team coming down here.
This whole year.
Well, we've had a great year and we've had one now for the last three years.
And so, you know, our community comes in, supports our kids in each and every I mean, we have a great athletic association, a great staff, and so our teachers get behind them.
We have t shirt sales.
We believe two things motivate kids food and t shirts.
And so this week we've got great T-shirt sales and we enjoy coming to the Macon Coliseum and and also a basketball championship to go with Dave Shoemaker and besides, I want t shirts, too.
Just kidding.
I'm a I'm a kid at heart.
Bobby, thanks for your time, Dave.
Thanks for your time.
Jim, thanks for your time.
Back to you and thank you for your time.
John Well, I'll tell you what, if Perry wins a basketball championship, that'd be their second championship in five weeks.
Perry's cheerleading squad won the cheerleading championships about five weeks ago right here on TV.
All right.
We had some great first half highlights.
And for those highlights, we go to Dave Gardner and Terry Edwards.
All right.
Thanks, Jim.
A first half indeed.
A one point ballgame here, 2120 Perry over Gainesville right now.
Let's go and take a look at some of the highlights that set the pace there.
In that first half, I thought Tennessee came out of play very well for Perry.
She had a nice jump shot.
She also got on an open court in Gainesville.
On the other hand, they caught they had some great quarter where in the bus portion that she pushed it up go way up for team number 14.
Hendrick stepped up and made a couple of big shots for Gainesville as well.
Davis back with Perry.
She's been pounding on the inside and doing her job.
And then once again, like I said, she's been out in open court.
That's her game.
She wants to help create some turnovers on defense so that she can lay the ball, check out the big shot here, too.
And this was a big night.
I got to love that guy to call it, but we'll give it to her.
Of course, Gainesville on the other end with the big three of their own, Hendrick Hendricks again knocking one well, really big shots.
It's going to take a look at the stats there from that first half.
As you see the field goals a little slow there.
Only 24% from the field for Gainesville, Perry, a little bit better.
36, of course, rebounds.
Pretty much even the turnover picture is pretty much even as well.
Free throws teams picking it up a little bit there.
But so far, I guess I guess it's safe to say it's been a pretty even game.
It has been.
It's been a surprisingly easy game and I think Perry has done a great job of containing Taja Humphrey so far by Coach Chant said before going into halftime, he has rotated different players on her, even though they're outmatched outside, they're getting the job done.
All right.
Well, let's go ahead and step aside here.
We'll be right back.
As we get set for second half.
Action, triple-A girls resumes right after this broadcast of USA Basketball on TV.
TV is made possible in part by the following corporate partners.
You're watching TV bringing you the best.
You're watching the USA Basketball State Championships on TV.
Back here at the Make It Center flex as we get set for third quarter action quickly, let's throw it on now to John Nelson.
John, what's up?
Just talk to Anson Hill real quick.
He's worried about 17 of Davis needs to find a way to shut her here in the next 16 minutes.
He thought he was getting good looks, but he needs more inside presence and less outside presence offensively.
Back to you.
There you go.
And that's kind of what we talked a little bit there at at halftime.
They're both teams looking to step it up in the third quarter and pick up the pace.
Definitely interesting because 15 of Davis really picked it up the pace beforehand.
They're going to look at the leaders for Gainesville, Humphrey with nine points, Hendrix with five and now with four and four.
Perry That's Marina Davis with seven points, Mitchell with six and a couple of players with four points and Williams and 17 of Davis.
And Perry does a great job with some balance and balanced scoring.
So I'm not surprised by that one, that's for sure.
Which is a good thing for any team when all your players can score Exactly.
Exactly.
There's Humphrey now over in the corner.
Westmoreland inside Tough turnaround for Hendricks to strong won't go, but Gainesville keeps it alive underneath.
Parker was there and she grabbed the rebound, put it back.
Hendricks is playing with a lot of confidence that she is that about Hendricks, say Junior trying to take it home Well and a big one here by Humphrey came out the pain for that one and Then Humphrey hits the floor they're fouled from behind.
They're going to get Williams it looks like for a push And that is of course the big as Jim alluded to.
And we get a look at the block there by Brian Humphrey was a big night championship.
The championship up I guess would be a cheerleading team for Perry winning the state.
Of course, the basketball team here looking to add a title to his Gainesville right there as well, trying to add another title.
Their baseball team, of course, is always winning the state championship.
It seems like, And a shot from outside off the marker a little bit rattled in and out of there for Mandy Smith.
That was a great shot attempt.
Tremendous Read that zone very well.
They gave her a lot of space to take that shot.
I've seen her hit that shot Harrison back in that one, three one on that possession and we got Gainesville here matching up with Terry and a pull up jumper in the lane off the back line.
Mitchell was there for the team a stripling big rebounds to put the first points of the night for Stripling averaging ten and a half a game Tennessee still she's coming up firing them up She's going to let that ball go but she makes it happen when she does something down outside goes up too strong off the glass.
But Miles keeps it alive.
Good bounce there for Gainesville.
Waller kicks it back.
Anthony Smith got inside after trying to get position puts it up there in a jump ball ball possession area will stay with Gainesville Very good call good defense though by Maurine Davis she just stuck her hand in there and you hopes that the rest said jump for so off the inbound here Oh great pass underneath block from behind though and back the other way big time block there by city to Davis another a great read the toss to Humphrey finding a teammate in the basket wide open just a little slow shot that block Darcy Mitchell from outside no good and now another jump ball call I'll tell you the scouting report very may say they are not a good outside shooting team but it never did say they wouldn't do exactly because Tennessee is putting it up They're not they're not trigger sight all that's true.
I tell you what, I like it.
I love it.
Think part of my see him run a little bit more, though.
Trying to run the floor a little bit.
You're exactly right.
Usually they extended their full court pressure and trying to create those turnovers because they do love this fast break opportunity.
2320 to 1 point Perry lead here with 516 to go in the third quarter that's dribbling crosscourt to Davis Davis pulls back out being guarded by Waller and now Williams a reset up top.
Did you see him be patient But they still get attacked with some intensity shot partially blocked by Waller.
Now whistle underneath it, of course, going to be called on Perry and I believe that's going to be another foul on Jeremy Davis is going to be her third there just gives you that size underneath there now she will come out with those three fouls.
Oh, I just kind of knew fouls was going to be a fact, especially inside the paint.
I'd like to see Perry try to go and talk to the same men and try to get her in foul trouble.
And they're going to doing that in well, we thought they would start they would do that as they started.
The first play game replaces Davis in the lineup but elephants with the basketball Waller Smith with it in the hands of Humphrey turnaround shot quite though that was good defense she couldn't block aside there's no way she was going to do that but she was there with a hand in Townsend Station, which made that shot harder for you to make.
I guess she could hit all over the floor.
But if you if you have to, you'd rather make your have to shoot from outside.
He'd rather makers to take their shots.
He'd rather make anyone shoot for Stewart.
And a rebound there after this Lady Panthers unable to convert.
Somebody has to pick the ball up and that one to tie looking for a first the a senior underneath there but pass to high.
I'd like to see Mandy Smith get more into the game and make something happen for Gainesville.
I think she's just one of those confident players and I like when she has the ball in hand because I think she has control and I think she does a great job of finding Tojo intelligent, most vulnerable to scoring.
That takes the pressure off the where she doesn't have to bring the ball down.
Tipped rainbow shot way out there going for glass again wouldn't go That's classy Mitchell with it Here's how I'm going to be called.
Like I said, that kid is going to be everywhere.
She's a hustle player, so I'm going to be on Westmoreland.
We talk about Region seven triple play.
We saw the East, all boys warming up at the halftime here of this triple Play girls championship.
He's tall of course out of region seven trip was part of a basketball tradition for the Vikings taking on Hart County the Bulldogs You're filling up this Coliseum right now.
Yeah and of course that'll be the final championship.
No foul called underneath that's going to be two on Humphrey.
Yeah.
Championship weekend of course this is nine number nine of ten championships playing out over the last couple of days.
A busy weekend of high school basketball the state of Georgia.
It's busy.
Great basketball, though.
Oh yeah.
Stay right Games great games, good close games to win this one right here, 2322.
Can't ask for anything better.
Not a lot of offense.
A low scoring game, obviously, unless of course an exciting one that more than likely will come down to the wire again.
You know, that's all we that's all we've seen over time.
Of course, the girls, I think we had overtime in the quarter girls game last night up at Tech.
Oh, we're not talking overtime.
Well you never know.
But Humphrey, the crowd, that's what you have to do.
She has to turn around, get her position, establish herself, go straight up strong and get her buckets.
She can't really worry about the little girls and playing around these right now.
She's got to play basketball.
Humphrey with a baker's dozen.
Now for the lady start to heat up a little bit that pass too high intended for Tassie Mitchell and the ball will go back over to the lady elephant so Gainesville with a one point lead 2423.
The lead flopped here a little bit close teams taking place.
The first whistle on the floor 2120 at halftime was the score Perry with a one point lead and not a lot has happened since then here in the third quarter first and third Hazel with four points and Harry with just a bucket in this third quarter and it's about two and a half minutes left.
George Sanders kicks it out, Humphrey puts up the shot, won't quite go Hendrix in position and then to draw the foul and great hustle by number two ready No one's taking off on the boards again.
No one's put anybody in on anyone.
And this is just basketball game alone.
You know what a really big rebound.
That was great.
That's a third foul on Tina Davis as you get a look at it.
Again, no one just straight there.
You better believe after a rebound like that, everyone's going to crash, get a little more.
She could have had it in one on that one.
And Davis will have to come out of the lineup.
She'll sit with those three fouls as Fairfax checks back in and you get a look at the numbers on Hendricks Sue rattles that free throw There's seven points now for forest Hendricks the junior who's playing with the confidence of the junior No.
One and she's player that comes into a Laker game.
She's looking very athletic and playing strong.
There in the two minute mark here, this third quarter, 2323 Steal Kendricks on the other end Oh nothing left hander great fundamental basketball ability to have the Naismith hands down 32nd time out going to be called by coach John Chance and the Perry Lady Panthers and Gainesville has extended their lead to five a 2823 with 156 to play in the third quarter and they're doing it as a team tonight is not a just a toss it Humphrey So that we thought it would be great steal Hendrix got into passion laced read that perfectly went hard nice left leg That's a good shot as it is and then that was tough to see she was going to take that has nothing but determination on her face.
They got to look at Kendricks little smile there.
She came back on the floor there, so it didn't enter the lineup for Perry there.
And already Panthers will inbound trailing by five now.
So a little bit of work cut out for her Gainesville six great points there So this time out paid off for Kerry and they didn't need that one any to settle in.
They need to make great opportunities and take advantage of an area on the offensive opportunity that they did because we're getting down to the wire where everything counts and everything matters, as you saw six earlier on there by Gainesville for the last four and a half minutes, 135 on the clock here in the third and a turnover going back to the lady elephants, they're only one set opportunities here lately on the offensive end of the floor.
So they've got to convert those shots and they do get a chance.
WALLER With the basketball, the freshman who as you mentioned, has played a big part in this state that won by her up right off the bat from the corner, darling, with 11 points against Dodge.
Dodge, of course, out of the region for triple J, the same region as Perry.
So it's almost out of region for a final triple play this year at all, all regions for final things that make the game against that can look so easy.
I thought maybe they would make this one of these again.
I'm really impressed with Perry today.
Oh, what a pass.
Oh three Inside through the wall.
Okay, there's my point guy skill rack.
Just a dime.
And again, she's only a junior, but that was nice.
Oh, sassy Mitchell on the other end picks it back out.
A near turnover there, Fairfax with it.
Fairfax.
It's a three point shot last night with 5 seconds on the clock, putting Perry right here in the state championship game that went off the mark back on the other end.
That swallow all alone lays it up and way to win.
This guy tries everything and automatically when talks about the rebound she's looking up course she's trying to find who's outside and this one out from that ball is leaving.
That's exactly what happened that time she put that thing in there like Mike Vick to throw the money that with partially blocked by Wall on the other end get around the floor takes it ball still is picked up by Fairfax now Perry with oh I want to call they had Stripling underneath the pass to hide the ball three on one opportunity kind of looked at the court a little too late for that one so 4 seconds left on the clock here in this third quarter.
And Gainesville has extended their lead 30 to 23.
And at the buzzer, Hurst going to be short on that one and that is going to do it for the quarter to one quarter for the lady elephants of Gainesville.
They lead a 32 to 23 with 8 minutes to go.
We'll be right back to make it happen.
This broadcast of USA Basketball on TV.
TV is made possible in part by the following corporate partners.
You're watching the USA Basketball, all state championships on TV set and ready for fourth quarter action of this triple-A girls championship.
Let's quickly throw it back to John Nelson.
John game Gainesville right now in a ten hole run as we get to the fourth quarter spent some time listening to John stance he says get back to your offense in the post and he wants Morini Davis to get aggressive but not to pick up a cheap fourth foul.
Back to you all.
Gainesville having a little bit of trouble here on the inbound.
So Mandy Smith wisely calls a quick 32nd time out of Gainesville to hang on the basketball.
But in that third quarter, a slow in for Perry, a very slow there, one for ten from the field right now, and that's not a good thing.
Hopefully, you know, Coach Chance put in his starters.
They're all on the court right now, beginning of the fourth quarter.
They're going to come out and give it their all.
That's all they can really do.
But they to hit these open baskets, they got to make the layup and you got to convert everything from free throw.
You know, if you can bounce it up the floor and it goes in, that'll work to get this going in that cylinder there.
But they've got to put in a great effort here and limit as many turnovers as much as possible.
Not to make any turnovers in here at this point in the game.
The fact that Gainesville cheerleaders Gainesville outscoring Perry 12 to 2 in that third quarter as we begin the final 8 minutes of play here at the Macon Cineplex.
And what a weekend of championship basketball right here on TV, ten championship games.
This is the ninth one.
One more to follow.
The triple-A Boys Championship, the man to man coverage by Terry there.
Dave.
I tell you they came out with a good rebound and making time to turn around take a shot.
Maybe she doesn't necessarily want to take that.
I don't know Tim Russ but she's got a hand in face when she shoots.
It's a great start for fourth quarter pull up jumper in and out of there for Stripling, but she follows her own socket hustle there, keeps it alive for Perry.
They just kept it alive, stepped it out.
They came up with 15 of Davis go Humphrey down there with it, looking for the outlet down court, break it back way to get back on defense, to carry the team with the steal.
They're not going to let that happen so easy more get straight away and just great adjustment.
Darcy Mitchell from outside in there on the three point shot man heartbreaker that wasn't in and out of 30 to 23 Gainesville got a little test is hard got 11 hurt to the Warriors give it over to Smith on number 44 Lindsey Thompson the senior in the lineup for Gainesville second half of that time out shot from how hard is there Pito Waller three pointer big shot nice out the freshman with seven one man you never know it would you know you wouldn't and that's a good thing she knows she's in the state championship.
Probably not it hadn't hit her yet at all.
That's Williams with it up top back over to Mitchell and already Panthers trying to get back in this thing So Tina Davis puts up the shot tough shot won't go Thompson with it and once again Humphrey will slow it down just wouldn't go for 16 and that was a great that was a great penetration.
They're going to look at the run it's been a bit of day of streaks 13 and over run in the last 8 minutes for Gainesville shot off the mark back on the other end two on to for Perry the bank shot walk by go big block from behind and I believe they're going to get Humphrey for the foul that's going to be her third You're not going to win that battle towns and that one from behind if he blows it, it's definitely against you.
Coach John Chant said it best at halftime.
She's good.
What did you say about how is she is highly sought after?
Definitely good.
There's definitely room for improvement, don't get me wrong.
But she's a good player.
So from Tina Davis, the junior averaging right around 12 points a game this year at the line hits the first and now back into the lineup here for Gainesville Myles Westmoreland in there as the 13 run comes to an end with an free throw by the lady Panthers.
There are five points for Davis today.
Six boards.
She's really been all over the floor today.
She has played a great game.
Last night she had 12 points, 13 and the shot is there for Davis, six points now, of course, 15 of Davis, 35, 25 to 4, Game five, 45 to go.
A lot of game with a lot of time shot tip for Ashley BLOCK and a bounce.
I'm doing a little level of intensity from here right now that they really didn't have in that third quarter which compelled Gainesville to take the lead that they have now came out a little flat at half at that time, I guess.
And hey, now they've got to fight to get themselves into this thing.
Now, that's Westmoreland from outside three point shot out of their and no whistle on the floor and it looks like it's going to be called on Davis Santino Davis.
It looks like it'll pick up the foul odor.
Actually, that's number 11.
The team, a stripping hustle fouls off the inbound Humphrey underneath with the position they're 15 points now for Tosa He just gets in there and outside Nico Williams and just post it up easy shot positioning stuff that was almost too easy going inside off the fingertips that Maurine Davis couldn't quite hold it.
They just couldn't pull it in.
And that was a good pass.
Waller off the pass to Westmoreland.
Now that's going back up top that patience.
No need to rush it.
Let your offense play basketball inside Myles turnaround tough shot won't go Davis with the board and also Tina Davis back and running the other way pulls up for three short follow Davis won't go Stripling is there to draw the foul good work by Barry underneath man they're fighting They are fighting but they've got to settle down and take smart shots.
Great effort inside.
You're going for it, not given up and they will not give up the fight.
Just go on.
Because I tell you what, if Coach Chance can do anything right now, so center them, Tell them is not desperation time.
There's plenty of time left in the game to make something happen.
Take the smart shots.
We can get some bad ones inside the paint.
David Davis.
Time out.
Full time out on the floor with 429 to play.
3725 Gainesville on top in Gainesville out of region seven triple-A comes in at 29 at three.
Number five in the state.
Perry, the number four ranked team, the latest poll there, 29 and two coming in the play Panthers of course out of region four trip away And again a great great match up here taking place in the triple-A Girls championship.
Well, all of the state basketball championships can be seen live on the GMB website at W WW dot GP board.

But hats off to the Georgia high school system.

They're doing a great job.
It's always a long weekend and they've really hung in there.
They really have because no one sees them back in the back, sleeping on that.
They really do a great job with Alex and a lot of work Stripling to do on that last trip.
She's got four points now and the league is back to ten.
Feel good?
Look at the field goal percentage right there, 35% for Gainesville, 24 for Perry.
Perry just one field goal in that second half.
Now that 24% is not going to get it done today.
They have extended their defense.
They are playing intense.
They're trying to come up with this more, put their hands on the ball, creating deflection and hopefully going out and and gets back as well.
Like you said, Perry, not not much of an outside shooting team.
BRANDT They do they do shoot from out there, but they're more more of the scoring comes from inside some only they don't have that low of a percentage.
24 You know, normally they take those higher percentage shots again, you're absolutely right.
No, no.
They're actually getting layups usually in their games.
Right.
Those are, of course, up by ten only shooting 34%.
So, you know, they like to pick it up because there's still plenty of time left.
They're three and a half minutes to go slow down the pace a little bit.
Perry picked up the defensive intensity here a little bit, feeling a sense of urgency.
Right now, though, Mandy Smith resets up top Gainesville to Gainesville team that's taking care of the ball, being poisoned, really working their offense and working the clock at the same time.
I'm afraid to call trying to force that thing in there to Waller, but it wasn't there.
And now Coach John Chance going to call a 32nd time out, Coach Manson, he'll try to add another state championship to that Lady Elephant Trophy case.
And right now, Gainesville is in good shape, up by ten.
But Perry, as I mentioned, they've got the athletes, they've got the players to have the ability to get back in this ballgame, make some baskets.
They really do.
But they cannot afford to allow Gainesville to control the ball and have the ball on the offensive images for as long as they just had it, because that's why time on the clock and look, they're going to need to make up ten points, which is a lot for a team that doesn't convert many baskets from three point lands.
So they got to get a lot of inside three point plays or, you know, get to the basket really quick.
Given the clock.
There's plenty time, definitely times, but not much time.
If you're going to make turnovers or not convert, you feel those.
But take a look at some earlier scores from today.
Kind of get caught up on what all has happened.
Of course, we started out the day with her last night actually at Georgia Tech in Atlanta and in the Equity Girls Championship.
It was May's with a five point overtime victory for the state championship there over Hephzibah.
And then, of course, Griffin with a ten point victory over south of Atlanta in the quantity boys game.
A very exciting game five a park for you get it done over Stephenson 3 to 37 and in the boys game of course Wheeler 6356 back to back state championships four wheeler and five ahead and of course on to Saturday earlier today right here in Macon Taylor County winning the single-A girls championship.
And then after that it was the Whitfield Academy, 83, 72 over southwest Atlanta.
Christian in what a quite a ballgame there.
And of course, early county over Randolph Clay final in overtime in the Double-A girls game Mitchell Baker over to cater to the Double-A boys game that was fun to watch as well And here we are right here, the triple-A girls match up.
Oh, Oh, unfortunate.
Turn over there for Gainesville.
Perrys working really hard.
They were really patient.
They came out of the timeout, they went inside the paint.
You had a good look at the basket just go for them.
Gainesville No need to rest their game at this point in time with a ten point lead going out of bounds like that, they've got to play smart basketball as well.
Terry Meanwhile, picking up the pace a little bit offensively here.
Davis from outside Dwight, go and I'm going to go over the games the last to my lady Panthers and it looks like looks like Fairfax may have turned an ankle there or something but she's walking it off the hinges got a little lower body bump on her own healthy and this rebound possession here found a good body into it but got away with it so so Gainesville with the basketball and lead up three one lady you don't want to have it Oh what a move Tasha Humphrey But the number got to have won today.
That's a highlight reel right there.
That was nice.
What a move.
And then back on the other end, it's going to be Gainesville basketball once again.
You can't just go down and give him the ball.
Can't make it that easy for good team like Game three now Speechless after that last one.
I don't know how to describe that great hustle.
Oh, very trying to slip away, but time is running out here.
217 left in the ballgame.
Coach John Chance, his first season in theory guiding the Lady Panthers to the state championship game here.
He's giving their heart and soul to this game.
You can tell we can see it on their face.
You want them to know at this point, say it.
With 2 minutes left in the game, you still have a chance to get stay focused.
You got to make smart decisions.
Cassie Mitchell caught for a third foul and now she will pick up her fourth out there at a stage now where you're playing almost desperation basketball.
That's not a smart game to play.
It seems like in the game that's playing time, time you get some shots up.
First issue, attack the basket to Gainesville on the Hill and hopefully get to the free throw line that can make a difference in 2 minutes.
I you make a big difference.
The outcome of this game is they really think that way right now Gainesville in the one and 117 fouls on Terry Westmoreland at the line his the first answer facts and for the lady Panthers that's the first win of the night for Westmoreland hits both 3422 on the trip there makes it 4127 Gainesville in control here now Perry I'm feeling good about it with Humphrey on the bench.
Yep that's what they need right there.
Tina Davis Just in that one.
Off the glass there.
Good defense causing them to call that timeout.
Very good defense.
And we find our body lady elephants there.
You're going to look at this last bucket by Harris.
That's the penetration shots we need right there.
We need to convert those continue to attack You don't get any contact make the bucket.
You get the contact get the end one kind of taking a look at the road.
Gainesville in round one with a 50 point victory over Cedar Town 6738.
They cruised over towers and then round three over Albert County.
Of course, the victory last night over Dodge County, Friday night at 7:30 p.m..
It's Georgia's longest running high school sports in academics program.
That's prep sports.
Plus you'll meet some of Georgia's most successful student athletes, athletic programs and much more.
Again, prep sports plus Fridays at 7:30 p.m. on GP TV.
I enjoyed watching that.
Jim Jordan, who as I mentioned, does a great job with that.
I know he's over there smiling right now.
He does an excellent job with that program as well as all the all the folks that report in a very entertaining show and certainly good for the high school athletics in the state of Georgia.
Good pressure got to come up with those knees bar nearly on the turnover there.
They really got it.
We'll foul Katherine Hurst and put her on the line I thought they had that still would have been great coming out of timeout look at that right there Perry has only scored two field goals in the entire second half.
There's 153 left to play in the ballgame.
And you know, we can talk about stats this, that and the other.
But bottom line, that ball's got to go through the through the hoop at the end of the night.
That's the tale of the tape.
But that's the ball game.
I tell you that will do it for you.
Any reason to think we're going to score committed in 53 seconds on the clock, ten or more points if we haven't scored with two to begin.
That's a tough, tough one, right there.
Walter.
Back in the lineup, Mandy Smith will take a seat.
The senior first hitting on the first one and she knocks down both.
So Hurst, another senior with a pair of free throws and Hurst will come out of lineup Now, this Gainesville team has played a great game tonight and I tell you, they played as a team has been a joy to watch some because you would think it would be a touchdown free show every night.
But she gives her teammates just as much credit.
Sarah Westmoreland up with the steal for Gainesville Pumphrey Nice pass inside Waller Oh shot won't quite go Waller follows her own shot though and hits tell you at times it does a great job of reading the defense That was a really nice smooth bounce pass in the paint so Waller figures it.
There's a big three point shot right there by the Lady Panthers.
That's what they need.
Here we go.
Darcy Mitchell.
She's been putting them up.
They have it all going to me.
But I'll tell you what, there had been a few and that's a big win there as a good for almost so still a minute 20 left in second half and Gainesville very much in control but as you mentioned, Perry's got the athletes to get back in this thing.
Take a look at what the Lady Panthers did.
They cruised in round one over West Side Augusta, then a tight ball game, just a one point victory over Campbell County at around two than a six point win over West Point, West over.
Mitchell had a ten points in that ballgame and in the city as that two point victory that thriller over Westminster right there at the buzzer and the semifinals, putting Perry right here in the state championship.
Maybe maybe that game took something out of Perry that they couldn't gear up and play for a team like Gainesville because Westminster was a great team they played really hard, great team, great players.
You know, that happens sometimes.
It can be maybe under-estimated.
Some teams that you're not, you know, you feel overconfident at times, but Westminster really, they had some great players.
It was a great game, exciting game.
I hate to see them go out like that.
Gainesville And they actually beat Gainesville in the season, so but I'm sure they would have enjoyed an opportunity to play the game tonight.
But oh, what a pass.
Oh three inside and a foul.
But it will be the red hurricanes coming to say here at the end, Nice pass, nice work.
First with the bucket and the three point opportunity.
Now I'll tell you what Humphrey can do it all.
What a pass there.
No looks over the shoulder and first wide open underneath It was just looking like you had two out of three championships so far.
I think so.
I guess we'll see you next year to possibly never know.
But several other players returning as well.
And WOW completes the three point.
So Carson Hurst off the bench with five points here in the last couple of minutes 4832 with 112 left shot from outside that's Williams point shot off the mark won't go.
Shipley keeps it alive Tina Davis drives has it knocked away in a foul going to be called so Perry straight streak of 16 straight wins in jeopardy here tonight did you see Gainesville you know they haven't conceded as if they have champions already there.
They're still battling out, still getting on each other.
Look, it actually looks like this.
It's a tie ballgame With a minute left.
The look on his face right.
You still coach him?
He came blaming the fans, the competitive spirit of the game.
Davis with eight points and rattles that one in there.
So a good night all around for Santino Davis.
He's been very busy, Miles, with the ball for Gainesville and a foul going to be called on Perry 55 seconds left and it's pretty elementary, right now with a 15 point lead.
We're feeling the victory, but it's hard to hold it, I'm sure, going Miles at the line here again, coming up, strip away, boys.
Action.
You won't want to miss it again.
Hart County, these two all for the final championship championship weekend, if you will, in the state of Georgia right here on Jeepney TV.
I look at some of the Gainesville fans in attendance tonight, maybe some of the balanced scoring as well as some games.
Good to see the output of the teammates.
I'll tell you what's been a good game has been a great team.
Win.
Unless a miracle happened in 64 seconds after they're on the rebound after the missed free throw and now Humphrey will have a shot at the line here.
53 seconds left.
Take the pass off the period though.
What an athletic season it's been, especially winning that cheerleading championship.
Of course, girls here making this weekend playing.
It's basketball and of course, Gainesville, also a big year.
Their football team going to the dome.
The baseball team, I think, won five out of last seven state championships or something like that.
I'll tell you what, though, these young ladies in theory have played some championship game to get themselves here.
They are.
You know, as I always say, you're all winners once you get to this level, once you get to this stage of the game, three point shot there by Ashley Fairfax, they have not quit.
No, they haven't, which I love.
That's certainly been a trademark of this career basketball team, you know, for some of the seniors is their last chance.
You know, for some of the other players, they may have an opportunity to go further.
But this is going to be a heavy on their hearts and believe that, of course, games will go to, you know, raise the roof in a couple of seconds here.
But 44 seconds, I guess.
Yeah, you you you know, I always hate to see the the other team hanging their heads when there's really no need for it because somebody is going to win.
Somebody is going to lose.
Of course, it took me four years of high school to get to the state championship game and win.
So, you know, it's a lot of work.
I guess that's why you take a lot of pride in and when you do win.
Exactly.
Exactly.
A lot of people don't see what goes behind the scenes.
So some of these teams practice early in the morning before school or a couple hours afterwards or whatever.
And it's hard.
You got to remember, this is high school that they've got to juggle athletics and academics and that makes it even tougher, too.
So, I mean, take your hats off to all of them.
Exactly.
So Frank Lloyd did a good job, fitness and stats here tonight.
So we want to thank him and all the folks with this TV crew.
It's really been fun.
I've had a great, great weekend.
A lot of good games, a lot of close games, state championships and some memorable moments indeed, provided here.
In 2003.
The lady elephants get the ball in and Humphrey to go back at the line out with double bonus or she'll have two shots.
It's a matter of padding the stats now, right?
Yep.
Humphrey sitting on 18 points right now had a very slow first half.
She's only one of nine throws in that first quarter, but they did a great job in the first half containing her.
Or maybe, you know, she's probably seen as if she just didn't have a good time in the first half of the fourth as most breakers.
There's more miles out.
A lot of her games.
Will she gets some hugs from her teammates there.
Lindsey Thompson, number 44 back in and Humphrey again with 19 points and rattles in and out of there Well rebounds and some assists for the big girls Davis pulls up for three and hits Tina Davis in double figures She looks at that sound like I'll be done now.
You ain't going 12 points tonight for Davis.
She's got her season average and another foul on the backboard.
There's going to put Mandy Smith at the line just 19 seconds left 5139 games The lady elephants are been to the semifinals, been to the Final Four the last three years.
They won it in 2001 and couple of years later.
Looks like they're going to add another title.
Those chance takes Davis out of the game.
If she really played a great game, she played her heart out.
You know, it didn't go to waste wanting to go, but you just enjoy your kid can make it happen again.
Next year.
Country comes out of the game and is congratulated by her teammates.
That's the big dog over there getting it done.
Mandy Smith misses on the first when there are threes.
It's certainly been fun.
I've enjoyed working with you.
Have fun on that.
Double a game and it's carried over to this triple A game.
Good games with you as well.
Some good athletes to beat on the floor.
We've got to watch some of the some of the best ones and of course Humphrey certainly a treat and course I'm always excited to watch young talent as his mom has become my life since retiring to watch the young talent.
You're not old enough to retire now.
Hey, tell my legs that you got a few years left in.
Then.
Oh, man, you talk about reaching seven triple, as you said.
Of course, these tall boys.
Coming up, we talk about some of the other teams ranked there all year long.
But Perry, you see what they've been there.
They've got they've got a tough region.
Their Dodge County, of course, in the semifinals.
And it shows you the level of competition that they play in all year long to have.
You see some of the fans celebrate here a little bit, Tell you what, they are shifting in and out and stay for all day.
It's been exciting.
Oh, my goodness.
There's some great basketball, I'm telling you.
Hey.
Yeah, when you look at Gainesville, how do they contain it?
I mean, come on, 19 seconds.
You know, we saw it really anywhere.
We saw it with County.
You know, they were jumping around with 2 seconds left early.
They're already on the court.
But you can't blame early January against Gainesville.
Pretty quiet excuse.
It can't be exactly, exactly.
Like principal said, you know, they've been here before.
They just want to have another final, you know, just even he's out of experience at 10:00, you know, business as usual there.
This is what we expect.
It's what I'm talking about.
It's the only way to be a champion.
Expect to be one Buckholtz in the game for Perry number 25, as well as number 31, Stacy Askew, number 34, Brittney Walker in there.
And the bucket for Perry.
Also number 12, but now a stop.
Oh, there you go.
And that is going to do it.
Celebration begin.
Final seconds.
Oh, ball.
And a modest mid-court, the final 52 to 41.
Congratulations to the Gainesville Lady Red Elephants of Gainesville, Georgia.
Your 2003 GHC, a triple-A state champions.
Go ahead, throw it on down to John Nelson, standing by with the winning coach.
Thanks, Dave.
The tie is still undefeated.
Does it get retired now?
No, I think was about to bring him back one more year at times.
Still doing good and our team did great.
We made a couple of justice at halftime.
We do a great job in the second half, but I'm really excited now.
Tasha started out, I think won for her first nine, a great defensive effort that you ended up working your way through as we got to through the second.
Exactly.
I mean, this team ball, you know, and our other players stepped up and stepped up.
We did some other things, you know, and and made some again and made some adjustments on that, too.
So, you know, I mean, I don't care who scores what points.
All I want is games without more than the other thing, you know.
And we did that tonight two out of the last three years.
When does it normally sink in?
When that you get a championship, a t shirt and a hat?
You know, I feel extraordinary.
But this is the third one that we've been able to have in to our last four years.
And we've been three straight Final Fours in this group has just been so much fun, coach.
And they're just so determined and are so focused and now, you know, and that is it.
I don't know.
God gets any better.
All right, that's enough.
Congratulations.
Second title.
And that shirt, by the way, he wore that on Friday.
He said he just ironed it.
He didn't wash it.
Jim.
Nine down, one to go and one more to go.
The three eight boys championship is on deck here on TV.
Gainesville wins it 52 to 41, their third state championship since 1994 for John Nelson, Dave Gardner, Teresa Edwards and our entire technical team here in Macon.
I'm Jim Tanaka.
