Live from the Georgia Dome, it's the three day football semifinal featuring the Spaulding Jaguars and the Peach County Trojans.
And good afternoon, everybody, and welcome to the three AA semifinal.
I'm Jim Tanaka, along with my broadcast partner, Mark Lassiter.
Two highly explosive offensive teams today in the three football semifinal.
Remember when you were in school that a teacher told you to compare and contrast two things.
Well, these two teams couldn't be more different.
Peach County comes with a very diverse offerings.
Spalding comes in, they run the wing t offense, something we've seen haven't seen in a long time.
Spaulding has a true fullback name Mark Mario Gilbert and what a player he is, Mario Gilbert.
He's the leading man.
He's that rare combination of strength and speed.
Scored a touchdown against Laney last week, 256 yards.
He's also complimented by the linebacker number 41, Jeff Peoples.
Jeff Peeples has all the stats, but he also has a 3.6 GPA.
Earlier we talked to head football coach Kirk Hoffman.
Offensively, we were on the wing too.
You got an outstanding fullback who rushed for about 2000 yards and we're going to get him the football and make people honor him.
And then if they stop that and we'll go outside with a little wing back west and can try to use his speed to get on the corner.
And hopefully, if we have to throw it, we feel like we've got an adequate quarterback and get the ball down the field.
Defensively, we run a shade 50.
We're not very big, but we feel like we're pretty quick and we're going to try to run the football and the secondary single loaded.
So you'll see a lot of man cousins.
Coach Kirk Hoffman now on the other side of the ball, Peach County, the name has been mentioned all throughout the state.
He's compared to Michael Vick, his name, AJ Bryant.
AJ Bryant.
They talk about him being a great player, but he's even a better person.
He's a player.
He's 27 out of 33 in the playoffs.
Throw for almost 500 yards.
Peach County Defense led by linebacker Fred Wright, number 28.
Now, Fred Wright is the player that they're have to count for.
Again, one of those players that shows it speed from the outside doesn't have the technique, but he makes up for it on the speed.
Who better to hear from now but Peach County head coach Rance Gillespie?
Well, offensively, we're we're multiple.
We try to present a balanced attack with a we've try to run the ball and throw the ball.
We've got a quarterback just thrown for about 2000 yards and a tailback.
This is ran for about 1800.
So we try to be as balanced as possible.
And and defensively, we base out of a43 defense.
But we've also pretty multiple on defense.
And we will get into a five man front at times and and also an eight man front.
And the third member of our broadcast team.
Joining us downstairs is former South Carolina lineman Phil Proctor, who used a block for Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers.
Hello, Phil.
Hey, Jim.
How you doing?
You know, I was walking around earlier.
Jim and I started feeling like I wanted to put the pads on.
My knees got hurt, and so I didn't want to jump into Spalding.
These guys first trip to the dome.
They've got 18 seniors on the team that have been together for four years.
Of course, Spalding School School is only four years old.
Now, on the other side, he's counting.
Everybody knows about their offense.
And A.J.
Brown, but a lot of people don't know about their defense.
These guys have some very good athletes out there and not too many people know about the thing I like about them.
Jim, is across the front four.
These guys are £265.
And, you know, I like playing against guys that small.
Back to you, Jim.
That small.
I caught that one.
All right.
It's going to be a big one.
The Spalding Jaguars and the Peach County Trojans, the three eight football semifinalists next.
Live from the Georgia Dome.
Got a great welcome back to the Georgia Dome.
There you see the football teams taking the field.
Spalding Jaguars and the Peach County Trojans.
This is going to be a dandy under the big top in downtown Atlanta.
Mark Alexander, what a football game we're going to have today.
The only two times these teams have lost this season, Jim, 25a squad.
So you're going to see a lot of quality on the field this afternoon.
Peach County comes in with a very balanced offense.
Spalding comes in with that one dimensional wing t that we'll see and we'll talk about that as we get into the ballgame.
Yep.
There's Peach County's road to the playoffs.
And there you see, I tell you what, their regular season, first of all, rushing yards, they did very, very well.
A lot of touchdowns, as you see in the passing yards.
Well, we've got that story because of A.J.
and passing touchdowns, of course, A.J.
Bryant with 19.
So quite a quite a list of numbers there for A.J.
Road to the Dome for Peach County.
There you see it.
They defeated West over Scribe and County and of course, Stephens County in the third round of the playoffs.
Great road to the Dome for Peach County.
Of course, their head coach is ranch collapse.
GILLESPIE And there you see the Spalding Jaguars and their regular season and their stats rushing yards, of course, well over 3300 yards.
And then, of course, the passing yards, not exactly a passing team.
Mark Alexander But boy, I tell you what, they love to run the ball.
They love to run it.
Last week, Nellie, pass the ball one time.
And there you see the road to the dome, Grayson Carrollton.
And they beat Laney 24 to 6 in the third round of the playoffs.
We are set to kick it off the three football semi final from the Georgia Dome.
Helmets are up, players are fired up and we are underway.
Roger King is back to receive.
It goes over Roger's head, back of the end zone.
And Peach County will take over first and ten.
And that brings on the quarterback that everybody's been talking about, comparing him to Mike Vick and his name is AJ Bryant.
There you see him, number ten.
And there you see his numbers on the air.
The most obvious reason, Jim, he runs a43 for 40 and that is moving.
And here's your starting lineup on the line.
It's Faulkner, Marshall, Scott Harris and Johnson and in the backfield for Peach County Mathis Slaughter Right Hinton and Hutson are your receivers.
AJ Bryant on first and ten from his own 20 yard line and the handoff goes to Tony Wright.
And the junior picks up a couple of yards on the first play from scrimmage.
Here's the defense for Spalding, the front for Ray Andrews, Vaughn and Williams.
And then the linebacker corps is Whitley Gilbert and Peeples, who we mentioned in the open and the secondary.
Blanton, Russ Morgan and Lemmon's second down for Peach County.
AJ Bryant, good quarterback at second and six and the handoff to Tony Wright again And this time he's met by three of four Jaguars led by number 41 Jeffrey Peeples.
Peeples comes into the ballgame with a 158 tackles seven for loss and two sacks.
And here's that play again.
What a defensive stop by the Jaguars.
Watch him fill and use that strength and still use the leg drive to push the ball.
Carry about three yards back in the backfield.
Look at people's numbers on the season.
Very impressive.
158 tackles.
And a couple of steps to boot Good shot of AJ Bryant on 37 in the shotgun Picks up the loose ball on the back snap rolls right looks downfield fires has a man incomplete.
Intended for number 12 Christopher Slaughter the sophomore number 12.
You mentioned Michael Vick.
A.J.
Bryant showing the Improvizational quality to pick up the fumble, roll to the sideline and throw a dart that could have been caught right about the 35 yard line watch, A.J., raise and throw against his body.
Ball is close enough, but it's interesting that ball ball's about 25 yards in the air on alive.
A.J.
Bryant is also the punter for this scouting team.
He's back to kick it away.
And he does.
And back to receiver, actually let it go over their head to let this one stop around the 24 yard line.
Peach County downs it at the 24 yard line.
That's where Spalding will take over on offense first and ten.
And there you see Rashad Davis, the starting quarterback for the Jaguars.
Good year for Rashad.
He's more of a running quarterback.
There's this offensive line that he's been following all year long Palmer, Raven, Taylor and Pitts.
And then, of course in the backfield for the Jaguars team, a very impressive team.
We'll show you that here in just a moment.
First and ten for the Jack White.
Rashard Davis, your quarterback, he's a senior stands 510, 117 handoff to number one Travis West West tries to turn the right corner cannot.
Stop by three or four Peach County players on defense.
They're just when you expect Spalding County to come out.
And here's the rest of that starting lineup, it's west at running back, as is Allen and of course, Gilbert.
We mentioned the open is the fullback Tatum, the wide receiver in Duke, the big tight end.
We'll talk about Duke later on in the broadcast.
You expect the wing team to come out in a spread offense with two wide receivers.
So here we are, second and nine now for Richard Davis and the Jaguar offense just underway.
The three eight semifinal from the Georgia Dome.
And what a shot as Mario Gilbert takes the handoff up the middle and is met immediately at the line of scrimmage.
Good defense again by Peach County or Larry Cox.
Number five made the initial hit on Gilbert.
There's your defense for Peach County.
Of course, there's Cox, one of the defensive linebackers.
It's Crockett, Sanders and Mathis.
Your linebackers, right?
Do Perry and Wilson and the secondary is low brown brown and King.
Third and six for the Jaguars.
And the handoff to Travis West and West.
Continues to fight his way up to about the 33 yard line keeps those legs moving Mark.
And Rashad Davis doing interesting ball handling it built it play was designed obviously to go outside but with the ball fake he brought it back into the middle of the line of scrimmage looks like they got to bring the chains out for a measurement on this third down.
It's going to be fairly close.
It looks like they're going to come up and see if my first call today, about six inches short.
You just saw number 11, Darius Dewberry, the linebacker for Peach County, he was one of the guys to make the stop on that play along with number four, Brandon Wilson.
Here's the measurement.
Where do you think?
An inch.
You're usually good at this stuff here, Mark.
Oh, boy.
Look at this.
That's pretty tight.
So he got it.
So first and ten for Spalding.
Let's talk about Mario Gilbert.
Let's just go ahead and call him Super Mario right now because he has really been the leader throughout the playoffs for Spalding.
And there's Travis West.
Look at the numbers on the year for Travis.
Winning a half a dozen touchdowns first and ten at the 33 yard line.
And the handoff goes to Travis West again and West tries to turn the right corner and is met by a wall of Trojans.
What's interesting about Peach County, their defensive line average is over £260.
So it's going to be a big load for Spalding to think about moving out.
Is he going to look at the replay from ground level, the penetration and the interior of the Peach County Trojan defensive line not moving anywhere.
Great stop on defense by Peach County.
So here we go.
Second and ten.
Now for Spalding Davis on the handoff to.
Mario Gilbert and he picks up about two or three yards.
Talk about his numbers.
First round, he had 193 versus Grayson in the second round, 255 yards versus Laney.
He's had quite a post season.
Here's Mario Gilbert there's there you see it against Laney very impressive numbers for Super Mario as Mark Alexander has nicknamed him so perfectly.
I'm going to get this right.
Yes.
Oh, gosh.
How the handoff to Mario Gilbert.
And he gets about the 38 yard line.
Let's check in downstairs with Phil Proctor.
Elvis.
Hey, Jim, you guys were talking about Super Mario Bell.
He stands 510 and 208.
This guy has a £360 bench press.
Now, that's a lot of weight to be pushing for a running back.
Also, he's just under 2000 yards, so he should probably eclipse that today.
Back to you, Jim.
I thank you, Phil.
Brett Hobson is back to put it away for Spalding and here's his kick down.
Come on.
And this one's going to be fielded.
At the 22 by Roger King.
King down the right side has an opening, 35, 40, 45, 50.
Roger King has some open field for the 4035, 30 turns left and gets down with off the 27 yard line.
What a return by Roger King.
But let's set that up, Jim.
At the beginning of the return.
Was a very subtle ball fake to Larry Cox.
Number five, the return of the coverage team for Spalding County seemed to bite on the fake just a bit.
As you look, get a look at the replay.
And once he gets to the sideline, use his speed and balance.
Watch right here at the end of the play.
People are trying to think that he's tackled.
He's still moving on.
Roger King with a 51 yard return.
Setting up Peach County with a nice first and ten at the 29 of Spalding.
And now we have a flag on the field, maybe an illegal substitution.
So, Mark Lassiter, what a return by Roger King.
And they've had excellent special teams play all season long piece county that is to go along with that very balanced offense that could be a difference maker in this ballgame.
Dexter Odom made the call for he's the referee for today's ballgame with a888 semifinal here at the Georgia Dome first and 15 for Peach County.
AJ Bryant is your quarterback drops back to pass looks down field has a man going left side in the corner of the end zone incomplete intended for number 12 Chris Slaughter.
Chris Slaughter running a deep bad route working against Mario Gilbert who had deep coverage, responsibility and excellent throw just seemed to be about two yards too long.
But the angle on which he was delivered by AJ was enough to allow his wide receiver to run under it.
So I'll be second and 15 for Peach County.
That shot at AJ Bryant and AJ is back in the shotgun.
Oh, two wide receivers left.
One to the right call.
AJ takes it one step back by his left side has a man that's number 14, Antonio Hinton.
And Hinton gets inside the 25 yard line.
Good defense by Spalding to stop Hinton.
Peach County got exactly what they wanted working against Rashad Davis, who goes both ways on offense and defense.
Davis really has decent numbers, but they had enough space in the secondary to make that completion and tag on a couple of extra yards after the catch.
In San Antonio's numbers for the season.
Four touchdowns for 23, 35 for AJ Bryant, the Peach County 40.
Handoff up the middle Tony right, right.
Breaks a tackle gets inside the ten yard line to about the eight yard line.
There'll be another first down.
For Peach County.
Credit the block at the line of scrimmage, throw by number 70, Trevor Scott of Peach County.
We'll see if you can get a look at it at ground level.
There's where he got sprung down the sideline for a huge first down carry.
Here it is again as our TV crew has every angle covered here at the Georgia Dome.
The tight angle and what coaches love to see is offensive linemen able to move out and get downfield.
There's Tony's numbers on the air.
Look at that.
Almost 1700 yards, 18 touchdowns on the year first and goal from the eight yard line Bryan handoff again that's Tony right.
And right gets in the inside the five yard line to about the four and Peach County is on the move Mark.
You can tell that Bryant has been well coached because he's executing his ball fakes after making the handoff, hopefully being able to set up another play, watch him make the handoff.
It's a play right up the middle.
Now, a lot of times the better quarterbacks will think in sequence.
This is probably one of the best quarterbacks in the state.
Just watch the ball handling on the stats play second and goal from the four yard line handoff left side number 28.
For Peach County and he picks up a couple of yards.
To Fred.
Right.
It's only £200, but he really packs a punch.
He runs a46 40 and he benches to 85.
Now, what player uses that benchmark?
It's really that £300 mark.
So he's got another 15 yards to go, £15, I should say, to go.
So Fred right with a follows his left tackle and picks up a couple of more yards.
Third and goal from the two yard line and the handoff and touchdown by Roger King King sneaks in the left corner of the end zone and Peach County.
Is on the board.
And Peach County flipped the script on Spalding, going with the big house backfield in their own version of winning team Watson run behind his blockers and get to the corner of the end zone, lunging for the six.
So now they'll attempt the extra point.
Brett Mathis.
47 consecutive extra points for Mathis.
And the kick is up and good by.
Mathis and Peach County takes a seven nothing lead with just under 4 minutes to go here in the first quarter.
Here's that play again, Mark.
A.J.
Brant.
Ground level, just making this simple handoff and Peach County getting it up, up a push on its offensive front to get easily into the end zone, wants to run a pick his way along the line of scrimmage and then accelerate at the precise moment they've got six another look sometimes you see players Tony right was dangerously close to a hold but let go just in time as the runner was coming around the corner.
You see Roger again going for the touchdown.
He finished second in his weight class at the weight lifting championship.
So he's got a strong upper body and that kind of helps a little bit when you win on the football, there's your scoring tied for Peach County.
Six plays 34 yards, 2 minutes and 17 seconds off the clock.
And of course, they capped it off with the two yard touchdown run by Roger King.
And of course, the Peach County fans are pretty happy right now.
Roger King talks about learning his moves, playing flag football.
As you know, when you play flag football, you can't allow anyone to even touch you.
So he uses that ability and that elusiveness to his advantage, not only on offense, but on special teams.
He's a kick returner and a punt returner.
All right, AJ, Brian is going to kick this one off for Peach County.
And back Deep is Travis West and push on Allen.
For Spalding.
And this is west from his own 215 and gets out to about the 17 yard line good hit.
By Peach Counties Devon Barnes number 30.
Every now and then, you'll see the special teams set the tone for the defense.
Let's see.
A Peach County's defense now takes a cue of Barnes.
They've got Spalding pinned back with a length inside the zone.
What a shot.
AJ Bryant took off on the kickoff there after kicking that ball off.
Jake Taylor is the one that hit him from Spalding.
So first and ten for Spalding.
At the 17 handoff.
Inside handoff, it goes to number five.
Mario Gilbert.
Brandon Wilson defining tackle in the encyclopedia.
See if he could look at number four.
Just raise up and leverage on the tackle right in the middle of your screen right here gets in position, raises up, makes the hit.
XLVI second down for Spalding just short of the 20 yard line.
We'll call it the 19.
Clock continues to run here.
First quarter how could end zone shot.
The shot Davis on second and eight.
And Davis hands off to Travis West and west looks to turn the corner and crosses over the 20 yard line to about the 22 yard line, a pickup of about three for Travis West stopped by a number of 54.
DeLaria Sanders We haven't talked a lot about the linebackers at Peach County so far, Jim, but Derrius Dupree and Fred Wright will both be keys against the run heavy attack of Spalding.
If Dupree and Rate can get into the backfield, that's going to cause a lot of problem.
So a third down now for the Jack White on their own 22 yard line.
And on the keeper, it's Davis and Davis picks up the first down, but we have a.
Flag down on the play.
This one's in the backfield, which probably means it's coming back.
It might be offensive holding.
I think you're going to get a motion call on the backfield of Spalding, one of the better running plays they've had so far.
This afternoon afternoon's going to be called back.
They're discussing it with Peach County's defensive unit captain Fred.
Right, right.
At the 25 yard line.
Now, you can tell a player, look at that front of the helmet, the scuff marks, the scratches.
That's a football player.
Taking all those hits throughout the year.
Of Alien Motion in the Dolphins breakaway third down.
The referee, Dexter Odom, for today's three, a football semifinal.
And here is the Georgia Football Officials Association covering this one today.
It's Odom and John Pickens, Clarence Glynn, David Blair, Cecil Gray and Rob Rantz.
We appreciate that team on the field today at the Georgia Dome.
Third and 11 for Spalding at the 17 yard line, Davis on the Keeper.
And he.
Gets it out to about the 23 yard line stop by number 22, Roger Kings.
Head coach Vince Gillespie.
A Kelley talks about his offense getting a lot of attention, but his defense doesn't get enough respect.
So far.
Their defense very.
Impressive.
Just a hit out.
That's quite a kick.
Quite a hit there.
Brett Upson is back to put this one away for Spalding.
There you see Rashard Davis.
Roger King is back.
And so is Tony Wright.
Right, Fields, the punt drop to the Zone 37 picks it up and now is in trouble, spins and gets to about the 39 yard line.
That's where Peach County will have it first and ten Tony.
Right.
A little uncertain on that last return.
He was still looking to make positive yards, smiling now, but he had to be feeling a little bit jittery as Spalding's return coverage team was closing in on him.
But as it stands, Peach can have outstanding field position to start this next drive.
And here comes Peach County to the line first and ten at their own 39 yard line.
A.J Bryant back on the field, headed up the offense.
For the Trojans, forward and it.
Looks like the Jaguars jumped offside number 26, Josh Williams the senior so a five yard penalty.
Devoe encroachment on the defense so first down.
One player we haven't called a lot so far you may want to look for number 12.
Chris Slaughter, one of the favorite receivers, AJ Bryant comes into this game.
He runs a46, has 35, receptions over 423 yards.
First and five at their own.
44 could be a good passing down for AJ Bryant.
Two receivers left one to the right.
Bryant three step drop looks far incomplete intended for number 14.
Antonio Hinton Hinton comes in with the gaudy numbers.
He's averaging actually 18 yards per catch.
Say he took his eye off the ball.
As you look at the replay, he's looking right at it.
That's one of those cases where you just don't get the give on the hands to just bring the ball to you.
Head his hands kind of stiff ball bounced away.
Brings up a second and five There's your total yards so far First quarter Peach County of course leading the way 3716 And they're on top on the scoreboard as well.
Seven Nothing.
A.J.
Bryant in the shotgun, drops back, looks down field, scrambles, moves left now, crosses the line of scrimmage and is finally brought down by number 41.
Jeffrey People So there's peoples again.
Mark Now there's one thing to put in the Rolodex also, Jim, as AJ Bryant is running to daylight, he's carrying the ball in one hand very loosely.
He's going to have to learn to put it away, tuck it away like a running back.
If he's going to go especially to the middle field, watch how he starts to carry the ball once he sees daylight.
It's hanging out there, hanging out there finally at the last minute, tucks it away.
There's the Jeffrey Peoples 22 tackles, 258 tackles for the season.
Incredible.
And there you see both the school records.
That's pretty impressive by people.
Brian Handoff.
Tony Wright, right.
Breaks free up the middle and Tony.
Wright gets inside the Jaguar 40 yard line and picks up another first down.
While Wright gets the publicity break.
A shower martial number 53 got the block at the line of scrimmage that sprung the running back for the first down.
Tony Wright's had quite a post-season in round one.
He had 233 yards and four touchdowns against West.
Over in round two.
He had 139 yards and two touchdowns against Devon County and 202 yards and a touchdown around three again.
Stephens County.
So Tony Wright has had quite a first season here in 2003 Bryant back to pass hits quick slant around the slant and Chris Slaughter is knocked out of bounds at the 30 yard line.
What's the technique on AJ Bryant when he saw us man open actually gave that ball up tap and a pet to get his timing and rhythm together and delivered a strike.
Watch break, watch for the pet now as he lands at the throw, there's a pass and here's the throw.
Sometimes athletes have certain quirks, autonomy, mechanisms.
It's interesting to see that.
All right.
That's the end of the first quarter from the Georgia Dome, the three eight football semifinal, Peach County has a lead over Spaulding.
Back with more after this.
And back here at the Georgia Dome, one quarter of the books, Peach County leads at seven nothing.
Let's go downstairs to fill pucker fill.
Hey, Jimmy, I just want to give a quick shout out to all my unsung heroes.
I'm talking about the strength and conditioning coach to the guys that had to be there in July to be with the kids.
Don't get a chance to get a break.
I'm talking about my B team, my G players, guys that participate every day to help these boss the team get to where they are today.
Man, big shout out to my unsung heroes when you go for.
Hey, Phil, I got to ask you a question.
You missed playing this game.
Oh, Jim, you know, I miss playing the game as long as I'm walking around, I'm.
Looking for pads.
Shoulder pads.
Got him.
Good job on the sidelines.
Phil Looking forward to more reports throughout the day.
AJ Brian brings Peach.
County up to the 30 yard line where they have it on a second and one.
Brian drops.
Back to pass looks down field has a manslaughter in the end zone Touchdown Chris Slaughter a 30 yard touchdown pass And Peach County is on the board again.
An excellent job.
By slaughter working against Darius Morgan, seeing the ball in flight.
Adjusting to it while it was in the air, coming back for it and making the catch above his head.
Excellent.
Throw by AJ Bryant used the timing route.
Now watch to throw the ball so that slaughter can adjust to it.
Great catch by slaughter.
Chris Slaughter All of six, three and £165.
Brett Mathis was 52 of 55.
On extra points this season, he gets a chance to knock out his second of the day and his kick is up and it's good.
And Peach County takes a 14 nothing lead here in the second quarter.
On the first play from scrimmage.
Chris Slaughter runs a46 40 credit AJ Bryant for getting the ball to the end zone and allowing Slaughter to use his leaping ability to go up above the defensive back that was trying to make a play on the ball.
Here's another look from ground level.
Nice tight spiral as well.
And that's one of the reasons why he's always compared to the infamous Mike Vick.
And there's the scoring drive for Peach County, five plays 56 yards time, one minute, 39 seconds off the clock.
And of course, slaughter gets the 30 yard touchdown pass from AJ.
Brian that's a very bold statement to compare him to Michael Vick, but he will be attending the University of Georgia next year.
So all those dog fans that are tuning in will giddy.
They're getting a preview of a quarterback that may challenge for the job in a couple of years.
AJ might be playing in some more Dome games in the future, or at least that's what he hopes when he joins the University of Georgia.
Last time he was here five years ago, he came as the equipment manager.
Now he comes as a player.
Imagine that he goes from the waterboy to the quarterback of the football team.
AJ kicks it off and oh, nice kick here.
This one's going about five yards deep in the end zone and they're not going to run this one out.
Travis West decides, you know what, let's just take this one at the 20 yard line.
It's funny when you think about how quickly players mature, AJ Bryant really owes a lot of his experience and savvy playing football to his dad.
And as we mentioned, last time he was here when he was 12 years old and he was one of those managers, you know, the managers that don't get any respect players to say, yeah, just give me that, bring me some water.
And now he's back as one of the best players on the team.
And on top of that, he respects the Waterboys.
Spalding on offense first and ten Rashard Davis the quarterback one step back, one wideout to the left side Matt Davis on the keeper he crosses over the 2020 530 And.
Davis is very close to a first down as he calls his own number on first down.
Now the Spalding coaches on the sideline are going to talk to Greg Thornton, number 52, who is in perfect position to throw a block but just seemed to pause right to the left.
You screen not being aware of where the runner was.
He's just got to learn when the run is coming in his area, just take off downfield.
You can see the replay once he actually runs past his blocker.
Good tackle by number 28 Fred right for Peach County now looks like a timeout being called on the field.
Timeout offense.
So there you have with 1117 here left in the second quarter at the Georgia Dome Jim Pinocchio Mark Lassiter and Phil Proctor up and down the sidelines here at the Georgia Dome.
Phil Hurt dreaming about putting on the pads one.
More time so far.
Peach County, Jim, Dominant on offense, showing a lot of variety, able to get their running game on track and then using the arm of AJ Bryant on that last touchdown pass especially so unless Paulding County let's is going to start to diversify its offense more than it has recently really happened to Tucker run the ball a lot more consistently they've had so far.
Here you see the guys huddling around coaches talking about the strategy as they move forward here in the second quarter.
Some great football this weekend here at the Georgia Dome.
Of course, this is game number eight of ten.
In a 30 hour spin we got, I think it's 24 hours of live football is what they said earlier.
That's a lot of football.
So if you love football, this is the place to be this weekend here in Atlanta.
Second one now for Spalding.
Could be a good passing down the stretch, a handoff.
Davis gives it to Mario Gilbert and Gilbert gets the first down for the Jaguars.
A name going to hear a lot all afternoon.
Number 22, Roger King gets a shot at him right at the 35 yard line.
He only goes five, seven and 170, but he packs a punch.
Tiffin, get a good look at number 22 right here, wrapping up.
He plays offense, defense, he returns kicks and he returns punts.
Yeah, he does everything, that's for sure.
Halftime, he probably joins the band and gets a baton.
There you see Roger Chase from the end zone camera.
And there is Rashad.
Davis, the quarterback for Spalding on first and ten and the handoff from oh what a jump over the.
Line of scrimmage for Mario Gilbert as he picks up about two or three yards on the play.
Super Mario it's just the thing about Peach County's front four, Jim, averaging that to 65.
As we mentioned, Spalding just really hasn't been able to get a consistent push up front.
And as a result, they're coming up with his second and long calls, third and long calls.
And that's any time you can get that on a defense, you can really allow your linebackers a lot more flexibility.
Second and six, now for the Jaguars on their own 38 yard.
Line, Josh Davis.
Making sure his players are set up.
And the handoff to caution Allen and Allen.
Maybe picks up a yard on the play.
Brandon Wilson, number four for Peach County.
We talk about the linebackers did an excellent job of distilling the whole the front four for Peach County kind of neutralized the offensive front and allowed one of the live records to come and fill right there.
So a big third down coming up for the Jaguars at the 40 yard line.
Randy Wilson is the middle linebacker and he for 311 and off no Big Ten often.
Davis keeps it himself and picks up about three, maybe four yards on the play.
Stop by number four, Brandon Wilson.
Give credit also to Brandon Lowe, who was in on the tackle, but Wilson very active there in that three linebacker alignment.
But he calls the signals and he's a player that seems to have the nose for the football.
We mentioned at the top of the broadcast they love to run the ball at Spalding and Rashard Davis likes to call his own number a lot when he sees some big plays like that one.
The only problem is as well as he's Count County's Front four is playing.
They're going to like for them to run the ball as well.
Brett Upson The part of the way here for the Jaguars and Back Deep is Roger King and also Tony.
Right, right.
Calls a fair catch at the 14 yard line.
And that's where Peach County will take over first and ten.
Interesting point now in the ball game for head coach Brad Gillespie, a Peach County, does he go conservative or does he continue to lose offense?
Really air things out as you can look at quarterback AJ Bryant on the sideline strapping up, getting the last minute play instruction.
Bryant's had a decent game so far, throwing the ball.
So first and ten for Peach County at their own 14 and he two wideouts to the left side two backs in the backfield for AJ Bryant man in motion is Chris Slaughter.
On first and ten and the handoff.
To Tony Wright and Wright picks up about four yards on the play he'll proctor what's going on downstairs?
Hey, Jim, I'm down here with Erika Bryant, mom of AJ Bryant.
And, you know, we were talking about the Waterboy angle where he became the Waterboy for Peace County and fourth or fifth grade.
Now he's this big star headed to the University of Georgia.
How's it been watching him grow?
It's been very exciting to watch him grow.
It's just been a little sad because I wish this was that was here to help us celebrate in this moment.
But we get.
That going on, you know?
Well, I'm sure he's going to do very well down in Georgia.
Thanks a lot, Eric, back to you.
Jim, I'll tell.
You what, he did very well in that play right there, Bryant, to slaughter a big first down play right.
There.
One thing you notice immediately about the angular Chris Slaughter, he said Excellent hands, wants to catch on the sideline, turns and throws Travis to pick his balance.
But the second excellent reception for Slaughter.
Coach Gillispie has has known AJ Bryant since five years old.
So he's watched AJ grow up and now, now he's got the opportunity to grow.
Here to follow.
A great quarterback in AJ Bryant.
Larry, here he is.
First and ten for Peach.
County on their 40 yard line Bryant looks left fires downfield has a man it's Roger King and it's incomplete Lee.
Defending on the play number 14 Darius Morgan.
Roger King is one of those sandlot ballers he talks about playing tackle football with no equipment at all.
He loves the contact.
He says, I'm talking about raw no equipment at all.
Four of seven for 70 yards today for AJ and a touchdown.
I'll tell you what he can fire that football though.
Excellent throw downfield just seemed to overestimate the speed of King who actually runs a full four.
Second and ten from the 40 yard line.
Bryant from the shotgun sets up the screen and down the left sideline is Dedrick Hutson.
And Hutson is finally shook out of bounds at the 26 yard line.
A big play by Hutson.
Forget about Hunt's ID, Roger Key got a block on number 21.
Dustin Lemmons that got a rise out of the crowd.
You'll see if he can get a good look at it.
Here's the reception coming right at your screen, but an excellent throw again by AJ Bryant in space there's another look at it nothing but clear sailing just to the right of the screen.
You might see that block as it disappeared.
So Bryant Hutson, a 34 yard gain and a first.
And ten for peach County now at the 27 yard line.
BRYANT The handoff.
To Tony, right and right.
Maybe picked up a yard on the play.
To credit the play, calling him head coach Grant Gillespie's mixing it up, allowing Spalding's defense really no chance to get and in any kind of rhythm so far this afternoon.
Coming up on 7 minutes to go till halftime of this big Triple A semifinal.
Here from Atlanta in.
Motion, it's Hudson on second.
And nine, trying to pitch to Tony.
Right, left and right.
Is inside the 20 and we have a flag on the play might be holding against Peach County.
He's kind of trying to get to the outside.
Jim and I have to agree with you on the holding call as one of the defenders for Spalding already singing, It's going the other way.
So a flag on the play with 646 to go.
Right blocking the back on the offense ten yard penalty from the spot the foul we play second down.
Free play territory AJ Bryant has had some success going to Chris Slaughter.
We want to keep an eye also on Antonio Hinton, the other wide receiver.
They both have excellent size, both going at six three.
Second and 20 for Peach County.
AJ Bryant.
In the shotgun at the 36 yard line, Bryant takes the snap as low snap field and it looks downfield now takes off Bryant 3025 and jumped out of bounds at the 24 yard line stop.
By number 11.
Stewart BLOCK LEE.
And that's what four, three, four speed looks like.
Once Bryant saw daylight, he was a blur down the sideline, picks up the first down easily with a few to spare.
But watch his stride as he takes off and gets to the sideline.
That shot of A.J.
looking at the head coach, Grant Gillespie, for the play.
AJ is all business out there.
You can see him through the facemask.
He's been scowling since the beginning of the game.
Third down for Peach County, 38 rate shot of AJ and.
There's a whistle before this play even develops.
The only downside for Peach County's offense so far is a snap from center has been a little bit sloppy on about four occasions that last time the ball dribbled about twice before it got to the quarterback.
So they have to correct that in the shotgun.
You think anything the turf has something to do with that snap?
Oh, I don't think so.
That ball false start on the offense five yard penalty steal third down.
It has probably more to do.
Jim, with that difficulty in being a center, you've got to snap the ball and judge what your quarterback is and then snap.
You hit backup before someone comes crashing down on your shoulder pads.
So that center position in the shotgun really is a difficult thing.
Also, your momentum is going back.
You have to really kind of gain your position and then lunge forward.
So it's third and 12 now at the 29.
Yard line to set back to wideouts, one left one right for AJ Bryant trying fake handoff play action looks down field has it man incomplete intended.
For number three Tony right defending on the play was number 11 Stewart Whatley.
While he did an excellent job of defending that last pass, one of the few times we've seen AJ Bryant throwing into coverage here with two men from Spalding County in the area.
So as it stands, a fourth and 12 call coming up for Peach County.
They have an excellent field goal kicker.
Both these teams feature kickers that have range approaching 50 yards.
And being that we're at the dome, won't have to worry about any win.
They're going to go for it.
So on fourth down.
AJ Bryant in the shotgun on fourth and 12 and Bryant drops back in trouble, looks down field, rates his right side.
Now he's taken off 15, ten yard line first AJ Bryant and he has enough for the first down.
Did you say AJ Bryant or Houdini?
He was trapped.
Absolutely trapped way back at 35 yard line, broke two tackles and picked up enough for a first down all the way inside the ten.
There is a player for Spalding still down.
Watch the replay now.
You know he's trapped right here.
He should go down once, twice.
Just hits the sideline and then turns on the jets all the way almost to the nine yard line.
I'm telling you, we're here at the Georgia Dome.
It feels like it's a Sunday afternoon and we're watching number seven.
AJ Bryant.
You got to love the way he opens up with that stride.
I would say with about three strides, he can eat up ten yards.
Flag on the play, though.
Looks like this one got hit by a personal foul on the offense.
First down.
Okay so where we sit.
Still a great run by Bryant though.
The good news for Peach County is that they will have a first down, they will lose about 15 yards on the spot of the ball.
Bryant with an outstanding run.
Timeout worry.
And so we have a time out on the field with Peach County up 14 nothing on Spalding earlier today a double a semifinals it was Buford and to Carter that double semifinal.
Check out this fake here, Michael Manley and then the reverse, Marshall and Austin, 38 yards for a touchdown.
And Buford wins it over Decatur, the final 42 to 13.
So the Wolves have won 44 straight games and they're after their third straight state title.
What an impressive run by Dexter Woods and the Wolves of Buford.
Speaking of Bryant once again, Jim, he gives all the credit to his dad for tutoring him in the finer of playing quarterback.
One of the most difficult things for any quarterback with this much ability is the decision making on knowing when to run the ball and when to be patient, allow his receivers to clear.
So far, Bryant is doing an excellent job of that.
There's your championship for next weekend in Double-A, Charlton County Indians in the Buford Wolves.
So Gwinnett County, the chance to see possibly Buford win their 45th straight and a third state title.
Impressive, impressive.
Impressive.
All right.
545 to go here in the second.
Quarter, the triple A game first and ten.
A.J.
Bryan in the shotgun from the 25 and a shot pass left side to King and King breaking some tackles.
Look at Roger King.
Go ten to the five yard line inside the five foot three.
But we have a flag down on the play.
Roger King showing off his speed and his strength brought down by Mario Gilbert.
Here's the play again.
Inside screen set up very well by Peach County.
Crank it here.
Marshall got out number 53 in front of that play as King gets into open space, a little spin move at the end, but they're going to bring it back as a crowd on the near side is not happy.
Representing Peach County, another ground level shot KING The player that goes let's just call him a four way player.
You have to wait plays.
He's a four way player.
So this one is coming back again.
Kind of blocking the back.
Here's the offense replay first down after 15 off penalty and the call.
By referee Dexter Odom.
The funny thing about it, as much as Peach County's been penalized, they just reset and say, okay, it's just a practice.
Let's go for it again.
And of course, no surprise here.
Peach County, 104 yards passing Spalding.
That is a surprise with no yards passing.
But we knew that, A.J.
Bryant and Peach County would have the edge in that category throughout this football game.
Look at the skull and crossbones on the helmet player.
John.
Penalty still first down.
Players have rewards that they're given by coaches.
And you can always tell the better players by how much those helmets are loaded up with decals.
AJ Bryant Going to need a helmet.
Every time they make a big play.
They got a good kickout right?
That's the way it works.
Out from the shotgun.
AJ Bryant looks downfield now has to scramble in trouble and down he goes Tyler Andrews involved Trayvon make.
The big defensive play.
For Spalding Excellent coverage downfield by Spalding Mario Gilbert in coverage also joined by number ten, Dustin Lemmons who had responsibility.
Both were in the endzone.
AJ Bryant had no way to go with the football.
He had to take the sack.
So AJ Bryant takes the loss on that play and now it's a second down for Peach County.
Here's your total plays for the game.
Peach County 23, Spalding 11.
On a second and nine.
Now handoff.
That's Tony, right.
Right.
Breaks a few tackles and gets to about the 16 yard line stop.
By number five, Mario Gilbert.
Right showing excellent explosion at the point of attack got into the secondary quickly and judging by the spot he'll be about a half yards shy.
Another first down for Peach County seemed to trip as he didn't get his foot high end up on that next the last stride sometimes players playing on artificial turf just have to learn to pick up their feet a bit.
There you see the Trojan offensive line.
Walking right towards you in your living room.
Third and one, and the handoff.
And that's Tony Wright again, picks up a couple of more yards.
Now there's the real Trojans.
They've got a couple of rights that are doing damage for Peach County.
Tony Wright.
You also have Fred Wright, the linebacker, a first down call.
They've got a lot of choices.
I would be surprised he didn't go to slot as we could look at Tony Wright's numbers.
Not a bad average right there.
Nine carries for 55 yards for Tony Wright.
First and ten at the 11 yard line.
AJ Bryant under center three step drop fires up in the end zone to Chris Slaughter Touchdown Peach County.
So it's A.J.
Brown to Chris Swann again.
Slaughter made a nice basketball.
Move as he saw the ball in the air.
Didn't give any indication to the defensive back in the corner that it was coming to celebrate not too long over the shoulder.
Graham Watch Slaughter in the corner of the end zone on the fade route, as Bryant puts it, in a perfect position to make the catch.
What a pass by AJ playing.
I mean, there was only one person that was going to catch that ball.
Chris Slaughter got blocked ball the ways on the offense 15 yard penalty three passing the ball.
This is the third significant.
Penalty for Peach County in this drive.
But you know what they do?
They just tear it up and run it again.
You know, it feels like they're out there doing some practice and offense here back home and they just keep running these players tight.
First down.
One other thing, they're burning a lot of clock.
That's right.
Spalding's defense has been on the field the majority of the second quarter.
So as long Peach County can keep picking up first downs or, as they say, matriculating that ball down the field, they will keep that defense on the field even longer stretches.
So a first and ten now at the 28 yard line.
On wideout from AJ Bryant to the left side Bryant off play action fires left side has a man.
And it's complete the Chris Slaughter now they say it's incomplete to slaughter.
Slaughter is trying to plead his case to the referees who aren't hearing it.
He took a slide right at the 20 yard line.
Now he has his hands outstretched if that ball actually touches the turf.
Nice play.
Nice replay, guys.
And the trunk.
Yes.
Now look at it.
This will be a good angle right here.
Slaughter was sliding away from the ball.
You could see it.
Hold it up to the ref to say, here it is right here.
But he didn't get the benefit of the call.
So a second and ten from the 28 yard line excuse me, second and 26.
From the 28 yard line right off play action fires left side has slaughter.
Slant tries to stay in bounds but cannot and steps out right about the 20 yard line.
There's another thing that Peach County's doing very effectively gymnast running combination moves.
That time they ran a route off of Damian Brown, who took the ball deep into the end zone.
The inside receiver broke off his pad as you get a look at it from ground level and provided enough space to make the catch.
Excellent Ballet Job by Chris Slaughter.
So it's third and 17 now at the 20 yard line for Peach County.
They have to get just inside.
The three almost to the two yard line for a first down Ryan from the shotgun fires over the middle incomplete intended for Antonio Hinton.
And Peach County is just working on Mario Gilbert all afternoon this is one of the standout plays to Spalding, so they're not really paying attention to his stats.
He's a two way player A.J Bryant seems to feel that he could throw against a defensive back.
Phil Proctor.
What's going on?
Hey, Jim, you know, I like to keep an eye on those offensive linemen I've been watching Gary Faulk, the number 70, for one of the reasons that AJ is able to complete these passes and get out quickly.
He is doing an excellent job of pass blocking, but also collapsing on the backside.
Let's keep an eye on number 74.
Back to you, Jim.
Thank you, Phil.
Fourth and 17 and Peach County.
Chooses to go for Bryant from the shotgun looks in the right corner of the end zone.
Scott Slaughter incomplete in and out of the hands of Chris Slaughter and Peach County will turn it over.
Same falling offense, same play that was pulled back on the penalty slot as working against Travis West, I should say.
Very for Spalding.
Great responsibility deep in the corner of the end zone.
So with that long drive, we're already to 3 minutes to go in the half.
And I would say that the last time that Peach County had the ball ahead to have at least 8 minutes.
So Spalding takes over.
At the 20 yard line, Peach County.
Mark, as.
You were saying, they took 5 minutes and 26 seconds off the clock.
Long drive, but.
No points to show for it.
Handoff inside handoff that's Travis West.
And west is stop cold at the line of scrimmage by number four Brandon Wilson.
Once again that front four for Peach County coming up big one of the last players off the pile, Larry.
Number five congratulating his teammates, the linebackers doing an excellent job.
Ground level watch the field.
Also a big play by number 66, Sam Chester for Peach County 1/2 and they call it nine, second and nine for Spalding.
And then fake handoff play action now for shot Davis decides to keep it moving and is brought down.
By Darius Dewberry and to Larry Sanders.
Jim, there are some coaches that believe the best way out.
James Black Best way to combat that wink t offense is to play an aggressive four three and that's been shown by Peach County, their linebackers been very aggressive this afternoon and even though Spalding has opened it up, they haven't had any success.
Georgia Public Broadcasting would like to say a special thank you to our murals Society members.

Somebody Spalding players taking some direction from.
The coaching staff the Jaguars.
Sometimes coaches can outsmart themselves.
Peach County, I would imagine, was fully expecting to see that wing to outpace.
Spalding, on the other hand, adjust their offense.
But it almost plays into the hands of the aggressiveness of the Peach County linebackers.
So Spalding back on offense 2 minutes and 6 seconds to go here in the second quarter, I think third and 12 for Rashawn Davis.
And the offensive unit and the handoff and stopped immediately as Mario Gilbert.
Good defensive play by Peach County and now Peach County says wait a minute we want to call quick timeout we might get this ball.
Back Kamara.
One of the first players to the sideline.
Watch the before Brandon Wilson just walked along the line of scrimmage get a shot in.
But there are at least five blue jerseys at the point of attack for Peach County.
So a fourth down is going to bring up a punting situation for Spalding and Peach County gets to go back on offense again.
One of the difficult things when you have a run heavy offense, Jim, we've talked about Spalding only passing the ball one time last week.
They've been playing with a deficit all game and Peach County's really taking advantage, being a lot more aggressive.
And now Spalding just not able to throw the ball is in a bad position going into halftime.
A lot of games here at the Georgia Dome coming up, the four eight semifinal, the state's Burrell Blue Devils come in at ten two and one to take on the Tigers of Tucker.
That game, this kick off is at around 6 p.m. tonight.
Could be Tucker at Marist in the championship game again.
Then five H semifinal.
The Valdosta Wildcats lost where they started off the year one in three finished ten and three.
They'll take on the Seminoles a west side kick off right around 9:00 tonight on TV.
Part of the way is Brett Upson for Spalding.
And here's his punt.
And it's a nice little spiral.
Going all the way back to the 35 yard line fielded by Roger King.
King crosses over the 40, 45, 50.
Roger King is stopped at midfield.
Nice return by Roger King.
A 15 yard return sets up Peach County at midfield.
Roger King coming into the game, averaging 25.4 on each punt return.
His longest so far this year was 496.
I would have liked to see that one because he can move running at four four.
And here's your information for the big championship games coming up next weekend, TV.
We'll have them live for you next Friday.
The four, a championship at 730 and then Saturday night, the five eight championship also at 730 in the evening.
Your station for the high school championships, Georgia Public Television first and ten for Peach County at the 50 yard line.
AJ Bryant again in the shotgun as they try to put some more points on the board before the end of the half.
And this one was intended for Chris Slaughter throwing way over his head and on second down simply overthrown.
The closest player to it was Spalding's Dustin Clemons, who had coverage responsibility.
He was actually five yards behind Slaughter and the pass seemed to just get away from AJ Bryant.
One of the few Eric throws this afternoon, see it flutter a little bit, a dove for the attempted interception.
But it seems that Peach County's going to try to go up top with a minute and a half to go in the half they want to make up for those that penalty play drive about 2 minutes ago.
And ended up five and a half minutes and they didn't get any points.
Bryant looks fired right side.
And again, I think this one was attempted for Chris Slaughter.
Again, Chris just kept on going like it was a fly pattern.
Give credit to Josh Williams, who had outside pressure for Spalding, forced AJ Bryant to throw the ball a little bit earlier than he wanted to because he did have a man open.
So that brings up a third and ten.
And now Spalding might want to think about maybe calling a timeout after this play.
They might get a chance to get the ball back.
According to the clock, they don't have any left.
So we'll see what happens here on this third and ten call for wide receivers for Peach County to split.
Let's just flip to the right handoff inside and stopped immediately.
Is Toney right.
Stop by number 50 Walter von there you see big Walter.
That drive just stalled out for Peach County.
Try to get the inside handoff but let's not play by the linebackers for Spalding filling inside Jeffrey peoples number 41 didn't go for the little shake and bake move inside held his ground made an excellent tackle.
So a fourth and 12 from their own 48 And A.J.
Bryan to punt it away for Peach County that didn't receive his Rashard Davis the other quarterback in this game and this is a great kick by AJ Bryant they're going to let this one roll and it rolls and it rolls and it rolls some more down to the two yard line.
And that's where Spalding will take over first and ten, a 50 yard punt by AJ Brian.
Almost matches his longest effort of the year, which is a 53 yard.
It comes into the game averaging 40 yards per punt.
So the star quarterback showing a lot of.
Versatility, versatility.
As a punter.
Nice to know we're in the same league as the Jaguars.
Unbelievable.
14 nothing.
Beach County, 44 seconds to go till halftime and then the other teams get ready to come on the field.
Those are the marching bands first attempt was shot Davis in the dangerous situation from their own two yard line inside handoff that goes to number five That's Mario Gilbert.
Gilbert fights hard to pick up maybe a yard mark.
That looks like it may be the last play of the half.
And Spalding County has his work cut out for it to make some adjustments at halftime and see what wants to do on offense.
Timeout.
Black So a timeout for Peach County with 30 seconds to go till halftime.
You know, it's interesting, we talked about all these schools traveling here to the Georgia Dome from the north part of Georgia, from the southern part of Georgia.
And they come on school busses.
Well, did you know that school busses are actually made down in Fort Valley?
Interesting note.
Bluebird Bus Company right there on the main drag going into Fort Valley.
And that makes it a park.
So that's where they all come from.
And, you know, that's how they take their trip and we're going to it.
And it's good to know, you know, the kids are safely brought here to the Georgia Dome.
On school bus.
So the thing I love is that Bluebird has a lot of variety.
Most people see those yellow school busses, but you can actually get a nice little RV from Bluebird if you want not to put in any plugs.
Now, don't give any of these players any ideas, right?
Of course, Fort Valley is located about 105 miles south of Atlanta.
Well, judging by the size of the Peach County Band, they brought more than a few busses to get that contingent up here.
About 250 members in the band.
I heard they shut down the entire town of Fort Valley today.
So this Rashod Davis takes a knee I think that's going to be it for the first half as the clock continues to count down.
Of course, Spalding High, as you said, at the top of the broadcast and only their fourth year.
And Spalding High is in Griffin located some 42 miles south of the Atlanta area.
And by the way, speaking of Griffin, they've had some great football players over the years, almost 20 think it's 27 players have gone to the NFL from the Griffin area.
So a lot of big time prospects out of the Griffin area.
Halftime, Peach County leads at 14 nothing go down to Phil Proctor film.
All right Jimmy coach got a 14 point lead Missed a couple of good opportunities that.
We just made some bad mistakes on that one drive and like you said missed an opportunity to go up 21 nothing in you know we can't make those mistakes in this caliber ballgame.
Your defense is holding them to no points when you're going to do anything different at halftime.
We'll make a couple of adjustments and come out.
Hopefully we'll play a little bit better in the second half.
All right.
Good luck to you.
Thank you.
Back to Grant Gillespie and Phil Proctor downstairs.
Coming up, the marching bands, the halftime festivities from the Georgia Dome.
Peach County leads at 14 nothing.
Welcome back to.
The Georgia Dome for the halftime festivities.
There you see it.
Peach County leads at 14.
Nothing over Spalding.
There you see the Spalding High School marching band, the Blue and Silver Brigade.
The the director of the band is Rob Eskridge.
And their theme today is from Rocky Shores.
Oh, we're talking the.
Spalding Blue and Silver four great brigade.
Let's go downstairs to Phil Proctor Bill.
All right, thanks, Jim.
I'm here with Rob Anchorage, the band director for Spalding.
And Rob, I was watching you doing the performance.
You were having just a laid back nice time.
And are you feeling that way all the time?
Not usually, no.
But we know the show pretty well.
We've done it for quite a while.
This is actually the second show we've done this year.
We do a competition show and then this show afterwards.
And so it's a little bit easier marching, less marching music we take from the stands and our homecoming song is just a little bit lower pressure.
So we just come out and have a good time and score the Jaguars.
Okay.
Tell me about the your support.
Yeah, you know, the boosters, parents, man, do you get a lot of that?
Oh, definitely.
This is as I guess most people know this is the fourth year of the school.
So we started from zero and we've built up we've been able to buy uniforms, buy all the equipment that we need.
And we couldn't do it without our boosters and we were able to fortunately use concession, stand money, we run the concession stand.
So that goes a long ways in helping us support the program.
So the more the Jaguars win, the more money we get.
So it works out nicely for us as well.
Okay.
How long have you been in music yourself?
In music?
I guess my whole life, my whole family.
But I started playing saxophone in 1976, so.
And I've been teaching since 87, so a long time.
All right.
Well, we definitely appreciate it.
All right.
I appreciate it.
All right.
Thank you.
Back to you, Jim.
You, Phil, halftime festivities roll on from the Georgia Dome.
Peach County leads it over.
Spalding 14.
Nothing.
And welcome back to the Georgia Dome.
It's halftime.
Peach County and Spalding.
The Trojans lead it 14.
Nothing over the Jaguars on the field.
Now, the 185 band members of the Trojan Marching Band, the band director, Randolph Lindsey.
And hats off to the big marching band from Peach County, the downstairs to Phil Parker.
Hey, Jim.
You should be down here on the field.
The field is in a deal with Randolph Lindsey, the band director.
And Randolph, I'm gonna tell you, I've seen some good bands and some powerful bands right now.
This is extraordinary.
Tell me about this group.
Well, we have 185 kids this year.
They work extremely hard.
I have a lot of people working with me.
A lot of dedicated parents and an administration that can't be beat.
And we get the job done, as you say.
Well, I'll tell you what.
You guys got a lot of talent out here, man.
But you know what?
With 185 kids, man, I mean, do you personally get involved with each and every one of them?
Oh, every one of them.
We have them all in class every day for 90 minutes and even all of.
The dance team, everybody.
And they really work.
We work.
We learn everything.
From memory and we just work hard every day.
We never stop.
I tell you what, that was a powerful performance.
We definitely appreciate it and good luck in the future.
REINER Thank you.
All right, Jim, back to you.
Thank you, Phil.
We have highlights from the first half between Beach County and Spaulding to show you.
And here they come at you, Beach County.
It really dominated the first half here at the Georgia Dome against the Jaguars.
And the first half highlights Roger King on the punt return.
Roger King's been big at this all year.
Long, Mark.
There's some teams that's been fortunate to have a specialist, Roger King, on the return.
And now running behind the ball bay and the touchdown behind.
The running back for Peach County.
And then AJ Brian got in the act a nice pass play here to Chris Slaughter.
Watched him jump by Slaughter to go up and get the touchdown.
And that made it 14 nothing.
And that's where we stand right now at the half as the Trojans lead it.
And there are the numbers after 24 minutes.
Totally lopsided in terms of passing yards.
The surprise is the fact that Spalding has not been able to rush the ball at all so far this afternoon.
Total yards, obviously heavily weighted in the favor of Peach County.
And then at the bottom, the screen now was like the go to time possession.
The second quarter difference, I would have imagined it might have been more of a time possession difference, but it seems fairly balanced right now.
All right.
We'll take a time from the Georgia Dome second half kickoff coming your way between Peach County and Spalding Trojans.
Leave it 14.
Nothing.
Welcome back to the Georgia Dome.
Peach County leads 14, nothing over Spalding.
Let's go downstairs to fill Proctor Film.
Thanks.
Yeah.
Coach down by 14 points.
What adjustments do you need to make?
Well, first of all, you know, we've got to put some drives together on offense and just can't leave our defense standing out there on the field all night.
You know, that's the first adjustment.
But the second one is that, you know, we've got to make tackles.
You know, we felt like we got to the quarterback a few times and he broke loose and gained big yardage.
Coach, good luck to you in second half.
Appreciate it.
Thank you.
Back to you, Jim.
Thank you, Phil.
Mark, some comments about Kirk Hoffman, simple game plan for the second half.
Simple game plan is to really start picking up some first downs.
I was surprised he didn't go to the wing t offense that we expected off the top.
It was almost as if they tried to adjust their offense to combat pitch, count his defense and as a result they didn't play to their strength.
We might expect them to go back to that wing, to the three back backfield to see if they can build up the confidence, pick up some first downs and then open the ballgame up.
There you see the Jaguars and some numbers last week against Laney.
That was the magic number that I saw.
They only through one pass the entire game, but they came out tonight with two wide receivers and a slot man, so they kind of got away from what was successful.
And so it's interesting.
So they're down by 14 here in the second half.
They've been running the ball.
They've only threw one pass last week.
So down 14, do they throw the ball more?
Well, here's what you want to have happen.
Your first drive in the second half.
That's the one you want to use to set the tone.
You want to try to pick up at least a few first downs.
The last thing you want if you Spalding is a three and out good point.
So there is the other Trojans, a Peach County.
As they come back out of the field for the second half course.
This is the triple play semifinal.
And the winner of this game will play the La Grange.
Granger's next weekend in the three, a championship game, of course, La Grange winners over Washington County yesterday, 22, 17 Rangers won the state championship back in oh one.
So this could be two.
In the last three years for them fighting fans here in.
Atlanta at the Georgia Dome.
Tremendous halftime show by both bands.
And I have to especially give an extra gold star to Peach County's band coming out and putting on one of the best shows we've ever seen.
Well, I tell you what, 185 members, too.
That's incredible.
Hundred 85 well coordinated members.
So there you see the coach, Coach Hoffman, on the sidelines.
He's 33 and 11 in his fourth year and he's actually a Clemson graduate.
Kirk's done a good job with this program since the start.
There you see the triple AA semifinals and of course, La Grange, the winner yesterday against Washington.
And a peach can hang on.
They will take on the Rangers next weekend.
As we mentioned, the triple A bracket of the GHC football semifinal.
So there you have it, Washington County, the long trip yesterday back home.
Rick Tomlin did a good job with his players throughout the entire year.
Spalding gets the ball to start the second half.
This is their opportunity to get something going.
AJ Bryant To kick it off for Peach County, we're underway.
Second half the Georgia Dome, the triple-A semifinal deep is for Shawn Allen and he decides, I'm not going to run this one out.
So they'll take this 1/1 and ten at the 20 yard line mark.
Now let's check and see what formation they actually come out in to start this first series.
To start the second half.
The and of course you're your quarterback for Spalding to start the second half is Rashard Davis here you see a good look at Mario Gilbert, the fullback for the Jaguars first and ten.
Back to the tight formation.
And the handoff goes to.
Mario Gilbert and Gilbert picks up a couple of yards on first.
Down.
Unlike what we saw at the beginning of the game, Spalding coming out in a bit of a double wing, no wide receivers, so they seem to be wanting to pack the offensive line of scrimmage to see if they can get a push up front.
So pick up about three yards on the play of his second and seven, there's Davis Josh Davis, the senior quarterback for Spalding and a handoff again to Mario Gilbert.
And Gilbert fights his way over the 30 yard line about the 31 yard line stop by number 22, Roger King.
Excellent block up front by Sean Hayes of Spalding.
They got exactly what they wanted over right guard and pick up and very important first down.
So first and ten for the Jaguars at their own 31 yard line trap here you see Mario Gilbert in the backfield the lone back.
And Gilbert gets the call again.
Picks up maybe a yard on the play.
The stop by Darius Dewberry number 11, the linebacker for Peach County.
Really interesting that we expected the wing t offense to start now they've gone to a double wing variation on that theme not much doing on first down.
This is a very important second and long call.
You don't want to come up with a third long with this type of offense.
So a second down and nine from their own 32 yard.
Line Davis rolls right on the options, decides to keep it and crosses over.
The 35 for the 36 yard line pick up about four yards and the stop by number 20 Brandon Lo.
Davis saw something over right tackle last player up as you get a look at the replay from ground level looks like Mario Gilbert coming up limping after that last play that's a player they can ill afford to miss as Gilbert goes both ways for Spalding.
Gilbert has been the go to guy all season long for the Jaguars and we mentioned earlier about what a successful.
Postseason and he has had third and four Davis handoff Gilbert again looks like he's got it and it looks.
Like he has a first down was brought down by a number 11 Darius Dewberry again the linebacker.
Give credit downfield Taylor Ray with an excellent block by Spalding they're getting a much better push so far in the second half.
So whatever speech Kirk Hoffman gave at halftime, he had to focus on his offensive line and say, if you guys don't move out, we can't run the football.
So far, the offensive line doing a much better job.
But Jaguars are moving the chains.
Another first down at their own 42 yard line.
There you see Gilbert's numbers on the 11 carries for 37 yards.
And the handoff, again, that's Gilbert.
And the stop by number 28.
Fred, right.
Now, here's the fun part.
Offensive linemen really don't like the run pass block because you're always retreating and having to absorb punishment.
If you would allow offensive linemen the freedom and the fun to just get out there and run and hit somebody, that's where they really like to earn their money.
That three yard pickup sets up a second and seven.
We'll call it second and.
Eight for the Jaguars.
Josh Davis under center.
And in motion handoff fake handoff and off the opposing play Good night Good option play Travis West is gone Gets inside the 20 yard line a peach county and finally knocked out of bounds by Damien Brown.
So let's just go ahead and file that as a double option as you can.
Look at the replay, the fake pitch inside and to the outside, Travis West type probing down the sideline, finally contact inside the 20.
But the biggest gain so far for Spalding.
And a big gain it is a 39 yard gain for Travis West.
And a big first down for the Jaguars from the 16 yard line Davis inside handoff and that is Mario Gilbert again.
And it's really Spalding County simply going back to what it does best, running the ball inside, not worrying about wide receivers, loading up the line of scrimmage and just blasting people off the line.
With more on Mario Gilbert, here's Phil Parker.
And you know, I talked to Coach Hoffman before the game and asked him about Mario.
He said that he'd been banged up this week.
They were going to try to go.
Well, watching him run right now, you'd never know he was banged up.
Thank you, Jim.
You can say that again.
Phil He's looking pretty good down there.
Mark They keep calling his number.
He's dangerous in the backfield.
He's dangerous in the backfield.
Really was on the field a lot in pass coverage in the first half.
I've got to believe he might have been a little bit winded because Peach County was throwing right at him.
They didn't go away from his side of the field at all.
Mark your calendar for Friday night, January 30th, for the return of Georgia's longest running high school sports and academics program prep sports.
Plus, you'll meet some of Georgia's most successful student athletes, athletic programs and much more.
That's prep sports plus returning on Friday, January 30th at 11 p.m. Eastern, exclusively on GP TV.
And Mark, needless to say, we have a great time doing that show each and every year.
Getting a chance to spotlight student athletes from well over 20 sports play throughout the state of Georgia.
There's the current drive for this fall.
The Jaguars eight play 67 yards, and so far they've beaten 4 minutes and 14 seconds off the clock.
So very successful drives so far for the Jaguars as they're inside.
The 15 yard line to Peach County, Rashod Davis, the quarterback man in motion and the shot Davis rolls left Davis in trouble.
And Davis has brought down.
Great defensive play by number six.
Damien Brown Speed on speed.
Brown did an excellent job of reading the play, working down the line of scrimmage, and then closing with the speed and the burst to wrap up the quarterback.
Watch Brown coming to screen and then flash the speed another look at it from ground level take that.
There's no way Brown was going to let.
Go that time.
Not at all.
Third for Spalding and 14 yards to go from there.
20 yard line, a peach.
Patty Davis goes right by for West Incomplete.
Brandon Lowe was right there.
Here's another interesting feature of that play.
Brandon Lowe was actually in great position to make a play on the football, but in a very defensive position trying to get the hit in.
He makes contact, but the ball was floated out just enough that he could have decided not to go for the interception.
Brett Upson is in to attempt a field goal.
Looks like this one's going to be 37 yards.
Upton's longest of the year is 51, so he's certainly in range on this drive.
Upton with the kid gets up and it is good Brett.
Upson put Spalding.
On the board with a 37 yard field goal and it's 14.
Three Peach County.
And great kick from a tough angle the near hash mark had plenty leg to spare a very accurate kick so finally Spalding is on the scoreboard.
And well put that I think that he could hit that from 57 check this out.
Again is a replay excellent hold by number eight Tyler Hoffman got it down in a perfect position kickers love holders that could spin the laces away, get the ball set up perfectly said I have to think about it.
And back on the field comes Brett Upson to kick it off the Peach County.
Now it's only three points, but that could be a significant boost to the Spalding defense.
11 plays, 67 yards.
The scoring drive took over just, just over 5 minutes.
And of course, ups and gaps it off with a 37 yard field goal back deep to receive for Peach County number 22.
Roger King, of course, we showed you on the highlights at halftime.
Roger King also returns punts very successfully.
He averages 37 yards per kick return.
Roger King, the four way player.
And here's your kick off by Hutchinson and this one is hits at the hey king field two at.
The five king 1520 King at the 30 and King gets up to about the 34 yard.
Line.
A great return by Roger King of 29 yards and a first and ten for Peach County, brought down by Derrius Morgan.
Put aside to run back to him.
The greatest thing that Roger King did on a return was have the patience to wait for that second half to come down and then catch it and then see his return.
Man and pick up the yardage down the sideline.
So first and ten for Peach County.
There you see AJ Bryant, the quarterback for Peach County, Man in Motion Teacher cuts him the tight end.
One two wideouts, one left, one right, the handoff up the middle.
And this is Tony, right and right is gone.
Five, five, baby Tony, right.
A 65 yard touchdown run in Peach County is on the board again.
Sometimes it's not the flashy moves.
That you make at the line of scrimmage.
But it's a set of moves.
Tony Right.
Made a move about five yards in set run.
We panned his right foot and came back left and with that one move got into space.
And Brett Mathis is on to attempt the extra point for Peach County 320.
Right, demonstrating exactly why he's got over 1600 yards for the season.
Mathis came in 52 of 55 on extra points.
Today, he's three for three.
And Peach County has the lead, 21 to 3.
That's how you answer a field goal.
Tony Rice came into the ballgame with 18 touchdowns.
What's the subtle move right about there?
Right.
You see that play?
And the funny thing about it.
Spalding didn't get a handle on him.
The closest man was about seven yards away.
From let's see if anybody touched him right on the move up.
There he goes.
It was such a subtle move.
It was like it was.
Oh.
I moved.
I got you.
Well, there you go.
And there he is, getting a little breather.
One play, 65 yards, took him 13 seconds to go.
That 65 yard run track.
Great touchdown run run by Tony right AJ Bryant to kick it off to deep man for Spalding Travis West and Marshall Allen And Bryant's kickoff.
Is out of the end zone.
So Spalding has no choice.
They'll have to start this 1/1 and ten at their own 20 yard line.
Tony writes numbers on the day, very impressive, especially that 65 yards.
Run and you just smile about on the sideline.
And that is the perfect.
Answer for Peach County coming.
Off of the field goal of Spalding.
A big smile and a big wave.
You know, Mark, you were talking earlier about how, you know, for a lot of these kids, this could be their last football game as seniors, you know, and playing on television at the Georgia Dome and in the playoffs and how big this is.
It is really a privilege to get to be able to cover this and give the players this type of exposure.
First and ten.
Davis to handoff CHEERING And that's Mario.
Gilbert again and Gilbert gets maybe back to the line of scrimmage.
Just in Jefferson big number 66 for Peach County just gobbled up the running back on the last play.
A Peach County's defense takes the benefit of that last big run.
You can see Gilbert trying to pick his way by some space.
Not much.
There and so a second and ten from their own 20 yard line Jaguars on offense.
Rashard Davis, there you see him, the quarterback.
And the handoff to Portia Allen and Allen.
Close to a first down brought down by Damien.
Again, number six, the.
Cornerback Taylor Ray.
Number 55, that excellent block on Darius Newberry.
Number 11, you'll see him in front of the play just to the left, your screen right there allowed running back to get to the outside.
One of the better blocks thrown downfield by Spalding.
Great tackle by Brown has made a few big plays today for Peach County.
And Big 31 for the Jaguars.
What now.
Davis inside handoff to Gilbert and it looks like Gilbert might have that first down.
Nothing fancy for Spalding just trying to wedge out enough for the first.
They seemed like they they will pick it up and they increase.
So it's a first down for Spalding.
Larry Cox made the stop defensively for Peach County Total Yards on the day for Peach County 260, Spalding won 11/1 and ten from the 32 yard line.
That's Davis on the handoff.
It's Gilbert.
Again.
And Gilbert picks up about a yard on the play and the stop by number 28, Fred.
Right.
Reaching a point of decision for Spalding player pitch count.
He is doing a much better job on this drive, playing against that tight wing formation.
This might be an opportunity to start to go back to some of the formations they use in the first half using wide receivers, just a little bit of variety.
So they spot the ball at the 33 yard line and it's second and nine for the Jaguars.
And the handoff to West and West decides I'm going the other way.
So here we go.
1230, 540 and finally dropped down at the 44 yard line by Darius Dewberry, number 11, the life, the linebacker for Peach County, the good.
News that he might be close to a first down.
The bad news that there's a flag back up field at the 35 yard line.
So this play will be coming back.
And my guess would be that's a whole.
Here it is again west in traffic says woops time to turn left.
Excellent pursuit once again by Peach County.
Samuel Chester Big number 66 was blocking the way.
You'll see the tackle at the end of play Here's the play call.
Holding on offense, ten yard penalty replay, second down.
Just one.
Spalding was getting a little bit of momentum.
They hurt themselves with the holding call.
So they get back up to the 26 yard line and now it's second and 16 for.
The Jaguars.
Josh Davis.
Looking at the defense.
Man and Moses handoff up the middle.
NELSON Faith Davis scrambling and is.
Finally brought down at the 25 yard line stop by Larry Sanders, number 54.
Sometimes it's those unsung heroes up front that don't get enough credit center for Spalding.
Justin Pitts actually occupied two defensive players on the last play.
It was a busted play, as it seemed like Peach County really had it diagnosed well at the line of scrimmage.
But give credit to the center for doing his job.
What a fake handoff that was by Rashard Davis.
These quarterbacks in the Georgia Dome all weekend.
I've been hiding that ball really well.
Well, with the run heavy offense, he's got to be an excellent ball handler.
Third and 70.
Davis handoff now he keeps it Davis on the keeper and he gets shoved out of bounds about.
The 34 yard line by who else?
Number 22, Roger King.
Roger is everywhere today.
Once again, Spalding trying to use the run to pick up a significant first down pitch count his defense had enough pursuit speed to get to the outside and stop it short.
You see Coach Kirk Hoffman on the sidelines now back deep to receive for Peach County on fourth down is Roger King and Tony right to punt it away is Brett Upson and there's his kick and it's a and overhead kick hits the 35 yard line and takes a Peach County bounce.
And boy, is that a Peach County bounce.
It finally gets touched at the Spalding 48 yard.
That punt will net out at about 15 or so yards.
So unfortunately for Spalding, the reverse spin on the punt takes it back another 20 yards or so and Peach County sets up in Spalding territory.
Mark Today's game can also be viewed live on the TV Internet site at WW dot dot org.
Just follow the links to connect to the game.
All the games from the Dome this weekend will be archived and available on the Gp-B website as well.
That's WW DOT dot org and Peach County back on offense.
AJ Bryant from the 48 yard.
Line Bryant packed a pass on play action looks downfield has man wide open That's Chris Slaughter again Touchdown Trojans AJ Bryant is so dangerous What an arm 48 yard touchdown pass to Chris Slaughter And Peach County takes the lead 20.
7 to 3.
Working against Sean Penn he actually had Derrick Hudson wide open in the middle of the field as well.
So he had two wide receivers in space picks.
The man to the left, scores to six.
AJ Bryant and Christopher Slaughter has connected twice today and now Peach County has a chance to go up by 25, as Brett Mathis is on to attempt the extra point and the kick is up and it's good.
Matt This is a perfect four for four on the day in Peach County is up now 28 to 3 with 211 to go.
In the third quarter.
Mark Chris Slaughter has one of those strides that is very deceptive in space.
As you see ball fake he just opens up like a track man and is about ten yards in the open, makes the catch and just glides into the end zone for another look at it ball fake set up pump and the throw and you won't find a wide receiver more open than that.
And that one pump fake is what Vick faked out the defender that's why thought it was so wide open on the play one play 48 yards time of the play 8 seconds and slaughter of course on the receiving end of the 48 yard touchdown.
Pass from AJ Brian Slaughter 631 65 So if he keeps growing and you get him a little bit of that weight on to get him in the weight room a little bit, you may have something special.
If the fans are.
There.
CHEERING Big time on the stands for.
Peach County.
AJ Bryant to kick it off and back deep receivers.
Travis West and push on Allen for Spalding and here's your kick by AJ Bryant.
And this one is fielded by Travis West five yards deep in the end zone.
It will be a touchback and Spalding will take over and ten.
Now don't want to give Chris Slaughter a hard time but I'm looking at his bench press.
He bench is 185 now I could do 185.
He's got to get that thing about 250 to 75 to get some respect.
You could do 185.
You can't do it in five.
Jaguars Get Race Ready For Offense here.
Here's Rashad Davis brings his team to the line first and ten from the 20 yard line Mario Gilbert on the carry Didn't look like Mario picked up anything on the play maybe a yard mark.
I think that's the official mascot of the Jaguars.
Notice Balding taking less time in the huddle.
Shot Davis in the shotgun at second and.
Nine Davis fires the catch West and west is hit immediately.
Terrell Brown had.
That play measured.
From about.
Seven yards away, just lowered the boom and got a rise out of the crowd.
Is Travis West had nowhere to go a replay from ground level watch the timing of the hit more than anything else.
The oohs and ahs coming up in the air.
Oh, wow.
What a hit with the sound effects.
From the shotgun.
Again it's Davis off the option pitches to Mario Gilbert and Gilbert has jumped out of bounds near the 20 yard line by number five.
Larry Cox if Kurt Hoffman, the head coach of Spalding, is going to think about this ballgame in the win column on the next series, you may have to start thinking about a no huddle type of formation.
On the last series they went, it was kind of a modified no Hollywood back in the huddle, only about 5 seconds.
But now we're into the fourth quarter when they get the ball next.
As you see under a minute to play here in the third quarter.
Brett Upson Two front of the way on fourth and six to defend for Peach County is Toney right and Roger Kane this one's going to go to right right calls a fair catch at the 35 yard line that's what Peach County will take over first and ten.
On the other hand, expect Peach County to go very conservative on this next series.
We're going to start the fourth quarter, well, 49 seconds in the third.
They should have the ball in the fourth.
So it will be interesting to see how they manage the clock on offense.
There you see AJ Bryant.
Pretty impressive there, Mark.
I guess you could call that productivity two plays 83 yards.
First and 10th, a 35 yard.
Line here.
Right.
The pitch to Tony, right and right breaks free Tony right.
Into Spalding territory out at about the 43 yard line pushed out by Rashawn Davis.
Speed is a wonderful thing when you get to the sideline and just open up like that, pick up a first down watch, Tony, right from ground level, take the pitch and just accelerate behind the blocks, get upfield, keep inbounds for another three yards.
After he was, his momentum was being pushed outside.
22 yard gain by Tony Wright first and ten Peach County at the 43 of Spalding.
Oh LJ Bryant taking a look at that defense two wide out to the left side and up up the middle.
This is Tony Wright again.
And Wright gets inside the 40 yard line pick up of about four on the play for right stop by number 11.
Stewart Whatley You try to characterize the demeanor of a quarterback.
The best way I can summarize A.J.
Bryant, he's all business taking direction on the side of his coaches.
He's really got that fixed expression, the same express he's had since the beginning of the ballgame.
He's the business man out there.
He's the leader.
There's Rance Gillespie talking with that leader, AJ Bryant and also Tony Wright.
Well, that's the.
End of the third quarter.
Each county has a 28 to 3 lead over Spalding.
12 minutes left as we head to the fourth quarter.
Welcome back to the Georgia Dome.
The Trojans cheerleaders cheering for their Peach County football team.
They're up 28 three.
Very impressive play by AJ Bryant.
Last time AJ Bryant went to the sideline tough his head coach you go there to catch the quarterback's when it goes to take direction the other has to respect coach as well what do you want to do good point.
Good point.
Second and six for Peach County.
As we begin the fourth quarter from under the big top in downtown Atlanta and the handoff Tony Wright fumbles the football still loose football.
Bryant's in there trying to get a hold of it and looks like they're saying Spalding has it.
Number 11, Stewart Wadley, the senior linebacker, picked up the loose ball and a first down for the Jaguars.
Tony Wright is still down on the field, injured, Jim, after taking a tremendous hit before the last fumble.
We'll see it from ground level.
The ball just pops free now.
He'll come free a second time.
Spalding had one shot at it.
It's bouncing around and on the second shot they recover.
But again, Peach County's going to be holding its breath as the running back is still down, finally gets back up.
Tony Wright gets up, but he's hobbling.
It looks like an ankle.
So Tony Wright coughs up the football, comes to the sideline.
I'd be very surprised just based on how he's coming to sound, I think we might see him again in this ballgame.
So Spalding will take over after the fumble first and ten at the 36 yard line for the Jaguars, down 25 points here in the fourth quarter.
One wideouts for the right side, handoff up the middle and.
Trying to break free.
Here's Gilbert.
And Gilbert picks up a few yards on the play and the stop by Delirious Sanders.
It's about one of the toughest yard runs you'll ever see.
Watch Gilbert just pick his way, hold his balance, fight, get through tackles and try to pick up the yard.
So second down for Spalding.
We'll call it second and two.
Here's Rashad Davis, your quarterback.
And the picks left side.
That's Mario Gilbert again.
Gilbert breaks one tackle, breaks a second tackle, finally pushed out of bounds.
Out of the 45 yard line.
Find him in.
Brown tremendous hitting going on and at the line of scrimmage pitch count as it has all tremendous pursuit.
Once the blueshirts.
Close.
Once Gilbert tries to pick his way and go outside here they start close.
You see number four right at the point of attack.
Brendan Wilson, five players in on the tackle.
And that's about what it takes every play to bring down.
A guy like Mario Gilbert.
Third and two handoff Gilbert straight up the gut.
Almost to midfield gets them out to 49 yard line and that'll be a first down for Spalding.
If Spalding County or Spalding has a no huddle package, now might be a good time to break it out in 10 minutes.
In this ballgame, a run.
Happy attack.
They're down 28 three and you can't burn any time between plays.
Good defensive stop by Jeremy Crockett on Mario Gilbert first and ten at.
Their own 49 yard line one right out to the right That shot of Davis under center and the pitch could be a half back option It is Mario Gilbert looks downfield and it's intercepted by Roger King king to the 30 yard line 3540 and Roger King with a big interception returns it to the 42 yard line.
The Peach County, Roger King has been everywhere today Mark there's a.
Difference maker king in coverage turned and used his speed didn't go for the fake on the option now watch king number 22 turned look for the ball a little bit of contact makes the interception and then he's looking upfield.
Intended for Grant Tatum.
Sometimes when you force running backs to throw the football doesn't have the zip that you'd like to see it have as it would have out of quarterback's hand and king took full advantage on the interception.
So first and ten for Peach County with 938 to go in the ballgame and the handoff to Fernando picks Fernando is a freshman wears number 34 for the Trojans so they're starting to reach into the dig deeper into the into the into the team's arsenal to find some players give Tony Wright a break and you might see some David Mathis come in the ballgame pretty soon as well.
Also, Da'Vonne Barnes with four Da'Vonne Barnes maybe a step in here's AJ Bryant got back to step drop He's right side pass incomplete intended for Chris Slaughter.
Another thing you notice about AJ Bryant even though the last pass was incomplete he has a very quick release sets up and throws doesn't use a lot of unnecessary movement to get the ball downfield.
Just under 9 minutes to go in the football game first and ten for Peach County at the 45 yard line.
Third and seven come off the pass.
Complete to number eight.
Dedrick Hutson the tight end and Peach County crosses just over midfield.
He's kind of doing an excellent job of just taking what the defense allows and not trying to get greedy, picking up short yardage in space right behind the line of scrimmage, very close for another first down, coming up with a fourth and about one and a half.
AJ Bryant on fourth down and it looks like they're going to go for it.
AJ Bryant, of course is also the punter and I don't think Spalding was ready.
So they're going to call a time out on this one.
Time out defense.
We've been singing his praises all afternoon.
I have a feeling Aidy Bryant is a decent dancer because in his setup his footwork is very light.
He has an ability get back, set up chains and really hold his balance.
And that's an ability.
When he goes to the University of Georgia next week, the coaches here, the coaches will love the way he's been tutored in his footwork.
Yeah, I was talking to Coach Gillispie earlier this week and it was funny because we were talking about what happens in small town Georgia.
And David Mathis was one of the running backs for Peach County.
His brother, Donald Mathis, has a barber shop right in downtown where they have.
They played Monday morning quarterback after every game throughout the regular season, talking about what happened on Friday night for Peach County.
I think it's really neat.
And of course, David Mathis, brother who works at the barber shop, Donald Mathis used to play at Peach County.
So that's kind of like that small town stories, what happens there.
So earlier today at the Georgia Dome, we had some great football games.
We'll tell you more about it in just a moment.
Fourth and one, AJ Bryant and the handoff of First Down by Roger King.
Roger has done everything punt return, interceptions, first downs, touchdown season all over the place today.
Every now and then when I put together my game notes, I put a star next to a player.
Roger King was the only player I put a star next to for this game, and he's shown why so far he wants to run inside.
Just tough yardage, puts his head down, squares up his pads and picks up the yardage.
So a first and ten for Peach County at the 45 yard line clock continues to run.
Fourth quarter grip plate semi final Brian handoff up the middle.
It's Fernando Pitts the freshman stop by number 26 Josh Williams and of course.
Peach County doing exactly what they want at this point in the game.
Jim.
Picking up first downs with the ball in the middle of field clock running.
We're approaching 7 minutes.
Clock continues to run second and seven.
Man in motion is quick, slotted to right hand off up the middle and it's Pitts again and Fernando pitch gets to about the 41 yard line.
Excellent tackling backfield by Stewart with the Spalding.
I was surprised at the look on Rance Gillespie's face he's up 28 three looks very worried on the sideline 6 minutes to go.
AJ Bryant not a 2 to 1 out to the right pitch to the in the backfield.
Misses Fernando picks again and hits crosses over the 40 yard.
Line again to.
About the 37 Good pick up by Fernando Pitts looking pretty good as a freshman out there.
Got a few decals on the helmet so he's got some playing time and some commendations to show for it.
Good stop by Taylor Ray, the defensive end number 55 senior from Spalding and mark the ball at the 38 yard line.
It's a curious play call you're inside of Spalding territory.
You've got a fourth short really.
You don't gain that much by putting.
So they've got to decide to either kind of throw them upside to run a play here.
Here's that win in the backfield for Peach County on fourth and two and now we have a whistle before this play gets underway.
Too much time.
Peach County actually doing the intelligent thing by going about their business in a very deliberate fashion with the clock running really didn't matter whether they went for it or not.
With this kind of football game.
On the offense still fourth down.
As it stands, they have a lot of flexibility since their quarterback happens to be their punter.
He doesn't see what he likes.
He can always drop back a few extra yards and kick the ball away.
Fourth and seven AJ Bryant from the shotgun.
Looks downfield, fires up the middle, has a little freshwater slant to get to the 30 line and has another first down for the.
Trojans stop five Rashan Davis.
That's where Chris Slaughter could use the extra strength.
Davis really didn't have an excellent angle him made a decent tackle, but for Slaughter to be an elite receiver, he's going to have to learn how to break those kind of tackles in space after the catch.
Watch the little ball, fake here and goes down with the ankle tackle.
First and ten Peach County at the Spalding 30 yard line clock continues to run as you see slaughter split out to the right two wide receivers, the other split out to the left to set back.
Bryant handoff again to.
Fernando Pitts and Pitts picks up another five yards.
Now before start calling in your make no mistake about it close had an excellent game but as a young ballplayer and a player who's obviously not mature physically yet to get to that next level, building strength was one of the things I put at top of his list.
So important in the off season to continue to do the weight lifting and the training for each and every one of these football players for beginning their season seasons.
Second and final.
Ryan and the handoff up the middle and.
That's number 33 I believe it's Harris.
Harris gets the 25 yard line.
Interesting thing, when you look on the Peach County sideline chip, there's not a lot of celebration going on.
This is a team really going about its business in a very professional manner.
Running under 4 minutes to play.
Third and five.
Slaughter in motion.
Bryant drops back, looks for slaughter, doesn't have him still in trouble, finally fires downfield.
And this one is incomplete.
Intended for Dietrich Hudson.
The tight end and a good defensive play by Stewart Whatley.
AJ Bryant was just sauntering down the sideline trying to find a man open, but time he backtracks in the pocket.
He was almost back to midfield, just tried to throw it downfield for the completion, but fortunate he could use that kind of speed to beat by time to throw the ball downfield.
So a fourth and five coming up for Peach County.
They're going to go for it as the clock is down to 342 left in this triple semi semifinal, two right off to the left side to set back.
To the backfield.
AJ with the pitch this is Fernando picks.
And pits gets knocked out the 25 stop by number 14 Darius Morgan there.
Of Peach County did exactly what they wanted, which was simply to burn clock.
You like to see the runner stay in bounds at that situation.
Just go down on the chance possession.
Spalding takes over down 28 three is a good look at the Peach County sideline.
Again, look at the demeanor of the sideline, not let a celebrating coach going about his business.
It's almost as if he's playing a tie game.
And Peach County ate up a lot of clock again on that drive.
And so Spalding takes over first and ten at their own 25 yard line.
You see Coach Gillispie excuse me, Coach Hoffman for a smaller and Rashard Davis keeps it on the option play and has brought down pretty much at the line of scrimmage by number 22, who but Roger King.
Let's just go ahead and give him the MVP award right now with 332 remaining in the ballgame.
King has done it all this afternoon.
It was his return that really set the tone for the Peach County offense.
And on defense, he's really hit some jarring hits all afternoon.
There he is, number 22.
I look at the decals decals.
It's a good shot of the quarterback.
Rashard Davis said a good day for Spalding kicking at seven and the handoff to Mario Gilbert.
Gilbert crosses over the 30 to the 31 yard line and stop by number 11.
Darius Dewberry and number 66, Sam Chester.
Jim, you realize Peach County is after its first state title.
Why the demeanor on the sideline?
You can tell this team is confident to be winning today, but this is not the prize it thereafter.
Coaches love discipline.
This team is ahead.
You can get a feel that they're looking ahead to next week already.
And you mentioned they're looking for their first state title.
They lost in 1992 to Thomas County Central and then in 1998 to Garrity.
Looks like they're going to be in Fort Valley next weekend.
Travis West looks to break right side turn it up field and Kennard good defensive stop by Brandon Lowe.
In these days of excessive celebration for touchdowns you can see players celebrating tackles this team has its mind focused on really acting like it's done it before.
They're taking this victory really in stride.
And it's really a tribute to the coaching staff that they had this team that focus.
You see somebody hold up a sign down stairs, it's steep time.
Way to go.
Brandon got a feeling that might be.
Younger sister.
Fans on the near side finally such give Kelly a well-deserved round of applause.
Back to front is Brett Upson for Spalding and his kick is a good one.
And Roger King calls a fair catch at the 28 yard line earlier today in the single-A semifinal, Hopkinsville wins it over Clinch County 25 to 7.
They will play Lincoln County next weekend in the single-A championship, Double-A.
Decatur lost to Buford.
The Wolves have won 44 straight.
They're going after their third straight title next weekend.
Could be a good one and of course, here and the 888 coming up on four a it's Statesboro and Tucker.
The Blue Devils are the Tigers.
Blue Devils come in attempt to hit one the Tigers at 12 and one.
And then later on tonight, it's the five eight semifinal, Valdosta and West Side.
The Wildcats attended three and the Seminoles will take on the team that's been well known in the state as a very, very good football team for years and years.
Fernando pits on the Carry Valdosta 23 state championships and six national titles.
The Peach County Trojan mascot had a great sign Walking along the sideline behind the bench.
He had a sign that said, It's state time.
And that's what it's going to be next weekend in Fort Valley, AJ Bryant brings his team to the line of scrimmage at the.
28 yard line and the handoff.
To the freshman Fernando Pitch.
And Pitts picks up about four or five yards on the play.
Stop by number 77.
Jesse Pittman Well, let me just say this, Jim.
It's been a pleasure to work with you as that may be the last play this ballgame, and let's do it again next year.
Mark.
I'm looking forward to it.
And it's been great just covering these triple-A semifinal games here at the Georgia Dome and looking forward to seeing you guys back.
Doing Florida and in football, you and Charlie and Frank.
Tremendous game.
The Peach County, there's your final score.
Peach County wins it over Spalding 1 to 3.
So the Trojans head back to the state champion Gipp next weekend in Fort Valley, and they'll take on the La Grange Granger's.
We'll take a timeout from the Georgia Dome, hear from the winning coach right after this.
From TV back here at the Georgia Dome, Peach County wins it over Spalding 28 three.
Let's go downstairs to fill Proctor Fill all right.
Thanks, Jim.
Hey, coach, what a great ball game.
And you're off bench.
It was exciting.
Well, I appreciate that.
You know, we're we're fortunate right now and we have some good players and they've just gone out and made plays all year long and hopefully they can do it one more way.
You know, Spalding came in with like 333, 3000 yards of offense.
Your defense just kind of shut them down today.
I'm so proud of our defensive game so far.
And, you know, they don't get the the recognition provided that our offense does and probably not the recognition that they deserve.
But they play their play their tails off.
Okay.
Is there anything that A.J.
Brown doesn't do?
I mean, the guy kicks, he's quarterback, he's a leader.
Just give me this a summation of what a guy means to your program.
I'll tell you what he means a lot to me personally.
And and he means a lot our football team a lot to the Peach County program.
And, you know, we don't come around every day.
We're just going to enjoy him when we got a coach.
Congratulations and go to your team and good luck next week.
Thank you.
All right, Jim, back to you.
Thank you, Phil.
So a big day at the Georgia Dome.
Three in the books, two more to go, including the four eight champion semifinal between Statesboro Tucker.
That'll be coming up about 10 minutes after the hour for Phil Proctor, Mark Larson or I'm Jim Tanaka.
So Steak SHAPIRO, ball back.
We'll have the full race semifinal coming up about ten after six Eastern Time here on TV Song.
