And hello, everybody, and welcome to Championship Weekend as we roll on from making.
What a day we've had of basketball so far.
The single-A, the Double-A, the triple-A finals.
We'll have highlights of those games for you later on in tonight's broadcast.
For now, it's the quad, a championship.
The two guys who will call the game for you, Stew, Clyde Tenet and the elevator from Decatur, Mr. Herb White.
Hey, guys.
Well, good afternoon and good evening.
Thanks for being with us.
It has been a terrific start to a high school championship weekend.
We feel it will only get better.
A man who knew something about Georgia basketball, Well, after all, he's played his high school ball here.
His college ball.
I know you have played for the Atlanta Hawks, the elevator from Decatur, as we've been mentioning, Mr. Herb White and Herbie, we think this should be maybe one of the better games of the weekend.
Looks like a great matchups to Charlie Gibbons with another Dougherty squad.
It seems like they're here every year.
There's great teams out Albany.
We just saw Westover a few minutes ago but they've got one of the premier juniors in the country and Alexander Johnson.
And let's take a look at how they got here.
Well, it was a pretty easy victory, but tough fought against South Carver Jones County in a game that you saw in the semifinal loss.
They got by.
They looked pretty good.
Yeah.
The South Cobb game is a real struggle.
It was back and forth throughout the night and he was able to overcome it with a big shot from a guy that hardly ever plays and this guy's talking about big shots.
He's just a big shot at the school.
The big guy for the Dougherty High School football basketball team is this man right here, Alexander Johnson, listed at 610.
He's only a junior.
And a lot of colleges around the country know about this guy already.
And it is the inside outside game with Jason Woods.
It's brought him to the finals.
Yeah.
Jason Woods is a man that makes this team go and he's the guy that also gets the ball to Alexander Johnson.
So if Jason Woods has a good ball game, Alec Johnson have a good game.
On the other side is going to be Mayes High School.
They had a nice trip coming here and they had a few tough games.
But again, if you get to the finals, you're certainly on a roll.
And this is the roll they've been on.
Yeah, another tough semifinal game.
And you probably like to have a tough semifinal game going in, you know, because if you have a blowout, sometimes it hurts you.
But a three point game with Westlake the other night and Mays has a good balanced team and they have just enough sides with six players over six four to maybe offset the 610 JOHNSON And for me, high school, it is a family affair.
There you go.
And here's two of the bigger players, Juan Williams one of the Williams brothers.
He and his brother Michael between is a good ball player about six seven.
And he and his brother are going to have their hands full, though, with Alexander Johnson.
Well, it's going to be an exciting game.
It is going to be up and down.
Michael Williams, you saw his numbers, the numbers to his brother, very similar, both six, seven, both can run both tough inside.
What a game it should be.
We're excited.
Hope you're excited.
We're getting ready for the starting lineups coming up as you see Matthew Mitchell and some pretty big numbers right there.
Yeah, just like Jason Woods, Matthew Mitchell makes his team go, averages nine assists a ball game and about five or six steals.
So an incredible play reminds me a little bit how this should be an exciting game.
It should be a good game.
It's going to be the big starting team inside and whether this team challenges which the coaches have been doing, it could be a situation of foul trouble.
And what just will happen as we look at the starting lineups regarding as we've been going down a balanced team with that size inside her, right?
You're right.
And there's a lot of fouls to go around for Baze because they have the two Williams brothers and about two or three other players, six, 5 to 6 six.
And what they're going to try to do is get up and down the floor and maybe negate Johnson.
Now, as you see that starting lineup, you're saying, wait a minute, wait a minute, Alex Johnson, his 610 at the helm, is a far more of an inside outside guy.
I was saying to you before the game, Kirby, I have a guy, 610, and he's shooting three pointers in warmups.
I'm a little warmer.
I'm a little worried, but he can go inside and out.
Yeah, he's got a good 15 foot jump shot, and they have a nice, strong kid.
And you see him right here playing center for him.
He's a rugged player inside.
There's a lot of rebounding and he and Alex are putting inside combinations.
As we look at this starting team, if there's one thing you have to do for to stop them, is it all about Alexander inside?
Well, they've got some other blend.
Jason Woods is a good ball player but Allen Alex Johnson is going to be the one that does the bulk of the scoring for him.
So that's the guy that Mays is really going to have to concentrate on.
No, that's the elevator from the quarter.
You didn't mind?
JOHNSON Guys, when you learn not to challenge the 610 guy and when do y'all during a game, you can challenge the guy and take it to the rook and there's two series and either play away from him or take it to him.
And I think man is going to take it to him.
You know, maybe they'll try to get him in trouble, make him play it off and get him coming out trying to block a shot.
Then you've got your other guys going for the offensive rebounds.
So a lot of times if if the center is Johnson will try to go for the block shot maze might get on the offensive boards and do some damage.
Now, as we see the starting lineup, you are going to have a good time watching this team because they are up and down and they really do play some good pressure defense.
Yeah, they play that 94 foot game.
They're going to press and they're going to get all over you and Matthew Mitchell again, the guy that makes this team go, he's about a 511 senior guard, reminds me a lot of Tony Aiken's playing at Georgia Tech.
And we saw here a couple of years ago he's very shifty and a great passer, explosive off the dribble.
And as we saw in the starting line ups, remember, the Williams twins are six seven.
We'll have to challenge Alexander in the middle.
It should be a terrific game.
We look forward to it.
Hope you do, too.
We're coming back right after this.
Encore broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following state high school basketball championships.
Before we get to the business, we have some business before the business.
Someone getting awards that you're very familiar with.
It has a lot to do with high school basketball in the state of Georgia.
It's meant a lot to this tournament.
I know he's meant a lot to you.
Yeah.
Tommy Guilbeault is going to receive an award from the city of Macon in the Macon Cineplex.
He's getting a presentation appreciation of his efforts in bringing the basketball state championships for all classifications, boys and girls, to Macon, 1997.
Tommy Guilbeault brought all the games here with the girls playing in the new section of the complex They were playing in the other gymnasium other than the main gym before, but the girls got so popular and grew so much that they decided to move everybody in here.
Now, of course, we had a two day affair with boys and girls taken either Friday or Saturday and playing all day long.
And Tommy Gilbert has done a lot for the Georgia High School Association in his tenure there.
He's stepping aside at the end of the school year and the gentleman beside him, Ralph Swearingen, in the middle of those two gentlemen out there will be the new executive director for the GHC.
And that's going to continue on in the Footsteps of Tommy Guilbeault.
You know, I've been lucky enough to see state high school playoffs in a lot of different places Georgia, Missouri, my hometown of Washington, D.C. and Maryland.
And it is not getting any better than it is here in Georgia.
I mean, we were talking about it before the game.
The crowds come in the county leaving for the next game.
It's a terrific site.
It's a terrific city to have it.
And it's well, well done.
And no doubt about it, centrally located and everybody seems to enjoy it here.
There has been some talk, I know, from some of the northern coaches because the South teams get to play some extra games here.
But, you know, we've got some northern teams in the finals.
So I guess really it doesn't really matter if you're playing good basketball was Australia.
So we get ready to rumble and see what we got here and it makes a good start here and it's going to be an interesting game.
Let's get underway for the conference championship here in Darty and again, we know what Maze has to do attack the big guy in the middle for Dani to be successful tonight.
Well, they've got to get the ball to the big guy in the middle and get him some points and stay on the boards.
Even though, you know, Alexander John's the biggest guy on the floor.
This Mays team is a very, very good rebounding team.
And they're going to go with the offensive boards.
And by the way, Stu, good to have you back in Georgia again after a long hiatus and congratulations on your recent marriage.
Well, I appreciate that.
Your service, my wife, is probably watching you take your course.
Jericho getting ready for the trip.
Of course it is Jordy in the morning and his amazing life.
Let me recognize the three guys who are going to be working hard.
Also, Michael was be Larry soils songs and Art Williams is going to be officiating tonight and it's going to be up and down for them.
Spoken like a true player who even though doing the color trying to get the referees already on his side.
Here we go with Mr. Russell staying away and you get to see the big guy and Dani.
It's up and going to open up and it's like a32 zone and they try to keep the ball out of the middle.
And it's funny cause I talked to the head coach, Malignaggi.
He says to men, Here's a big guy.
But inside the ground, amazed with the rebound so early jitters as you expect to stay high school finals.
I'll tell you what, for you would recognize this.
They're over the rim, but they just got to put it in.
Exactly.
It's kind of tough to get used to this environment because there's so much open space behind the basket.
If you haven't played much in a facility like this, it's tough to get adjusted.
On Dani in the man maze trying to attack to the hoop and hope no good rebound by the big guy Alexander.
He'll start it off the garden and we'll try to get something going.
No score so far, early going, saying that zone maze was a pretty good idea, but it was inside trying to go against Alexander and a lot of three pointers off to start again.
Alexander off the rebound up strong and one of the things that's been hurting Hayes has got to keep him off the board.
And if Dani can start shooting some from the outside maze, he's really got that zone drop back inside the three point line.
So if Darden can loosen up with a couple of jumpers, it's really going to open things up for Alexander Johnson.
Let's take a look at that rebound.
Big, strong guy.
Didn't even know he got fouled.
How important is it to keep him from getting off to a great start?
Does that matter or is he the type of player that will just keep going as he hits the shots after nothing guarded?
Well, you hate to see a big guy, a star get off to a great start, but maybe they can contain 651 in the first quarter.
Glad you're with us for the Quarter Boys Championship today against Mason.
So far three nothing started early going and what had been up and down as we expected walking traveling whatever area you're from one of the Williams Michael is called on the infraction.
So here we see maze and a little bit of that full court press that we expected her.
Yes.
Looks like they're going to play a little man to man.
That's a 2 to 1, 2 to 1 zone press.
And that was back.
Court.
Yes, it was good for the back.
COURT And you know what?
I don't know if your coach, George, always told you, but Frank McGuire, South Carolina, I said, you got to break the press.
The key man is your big man.
Let him get the ball and let him try to attack at that time.
Alexander got it.
But that step over half court got to be aware of where you are on the court maze, trying to get it going, running the show, especially to the hoop with the feed.
It doesn't go here we go.
Started looking for the shot, not running at every opportunity to try to look inside the last three pointer.
No good rebound, man.
They're all over the board.
The Williams brothers, especially to the hole and up and good Marcus long with the layup 3 to 601 first quarter guards up by one Well he was close to the back a little bit scramble up three feet one way or the other to avoid another backboard calls to go when he gets hit.
That's a it it's tough inside Alexander wheeling and dealing walk it off and no guard off the boards comes Mary's nice rebound one of the Williams brothers that you'll be hearing us call them a lot tonight they had Mitchell a real magician with that basketball out there on the point in the win he can throw some yeah he can throw some nice passes although that wasn't one right there.
All right.
If you're keeping the statistics, that's jinx number one for Herb White on the player has guard he tries to break this Mays pressure and it is it is a disguised press.
It looks sort of man to man.
Then they take him in.
Then it turns into the 212 back and forth already going there you see Charlie Given's case, the starting jumper outside is called off.
It would have gone had there not been a call.
That was Jason Woods with a three pointer.
So he's had two baskets waived off with the traveling calls.
A little bit of tightness in the early going, 5 minutes to go, still only three, so guarded by one.
A little tricky dribble there into the hole.
Matthew Mitchell has a few moves.
He's got that shifty left hand move just like Tony Aiken do.
We saw here three years ago in the state finals.
Those lefties are always shifty, you know that.
Yes, I do Amaze will take it out of bounds.
It wasn't a shoot a foul trying to look inside, get off the back room and Alexander all over the boards, as are two or three other guarded players.
So here we go, 3 to 457 left guard up by one with a long three pointer is up.
It's no good.
Alexander Inside, it's a rebound.
The right hander is no good.
He's playing volleyball.
And again making a pretty good shot after those misses and letting him play Looked like some contact when Alexander went back up.
But they didn't call it jumper.
No drift off and that looks like he missed a jump ball or at least someone will get possession.
That was Michael Williams and we might get him mixed up.
Maybe Michael is 43.
Number 43.
What is number 31?
A medical twins, six seven.
So Dani will try again to attack his press and get an easy hoop.
Alexander's been getting good looks are just having fun maze with just enough size to bother him guarding looking inside there.
And there was another turnover he told me before the game.
Baze is scrappy.
They like the press, they like to run the ball and they're doing that in the first quarter.
Looking inside.
Good defense.
Nice pass again, is it?
Williams?
Yes, this time to one.
So very nice misses again and he'll get fouled Always went down but didn't quite say what early going Michael Williams Juan Williams keep coming at you they keep coming back.
So one of the things will be interesting to see is as you mentioned how tight they're going to call this game.
Will Alexander getting any kind of foul trouble.
The other Williams both have those lean light bodies.
They're real quick sleepers and they can go back up in a hurry if they missed the first one.
You saw it right there, Juan, going to the foul line a little better than his brother to 69% for the year this year up and down the side.
And this is just sort of three, three, four for first quarter of a 20 state championship experience against starting second with is up and it is good I know it's really going but we can't say it it is Mays first lead of the game they're up by a point to continue to press wearing it down guard now on a man and an amazing keep going back and forth back to the zone Alexander's just fouled sin a lot of big men in your day how does Alexander rank He's looking good as a junior.
We saw Kwame Brown the other night around it and I was very, very impressed with Kwami Brown from Brunswick Glenn Academy.
Alexander's not where he is yet, but he could be in another year starting to inbound in and go way over half court to start business off.
In the last game, we saw Marcus Campbell, the 714 player going to a mississippi state, long free pass.
Good.
That was Jason Woods.
He showed some range.
You get that inside outside game.
It could be a long night for Mase six for it.
His guard he up with 327 left in the first quarter, Armstrong with another three to go back and forth.
And he says what you can do we can do better.
Nice shot by Matthew Mitchell for three, seven, six days still we looked at these two games this one in the five eight game thought these are going to be our best matchups really two evenly matched teams in this one.
I think it's going to go down to the wire to do it.
You get that feeling very early.
Of course, we want you to stay with us for the entire game.
That's one reason we mention it as the luxury car goes up off wall.
But it is regarded by this many teams here as everybody assumes that can rebound.
That was a got it for Tony.
And by the way he rebounded and as a timeout may as they want to talk things over and one on three 5376 Mays is up take a look at Floyd Mack senior over there in the huddle.
I'm going to tell you this guy will chew a player up and down.
And you know, there's different styles in coaching.
And Coach Mack has been successful with that style.
No doubt about it.
He gets his players attention.
Kind of reminds me of Tubby Smith a little bit.
Not quite as divisive as Tubby, but he sure gets his point across.
Well, tonight here he's been with May Smith as a head coach.
I was talking to the coaches, which is on the short list, Lagrange College and averaged nine points.
I said, Coach, 19 points.
Corners No challenges, 19 points.
Now, Floyd played good if you play against he's not quite no, he's not that old.
We won't even say when you were here.
But thanks.
The peach baskets mean anything to you.
Here we go.
Nathan Brown up by one on DART.
It tried to penetrate up with the jumper off the back rim.
Alexander trying to get the rebound but it is controlled by DART as he will try to get things going and they've been looking inside They hit a couple of three pointers and he's tested them.
They've been pretty good up no good wild shot here three point shooting, one for five right Darting one for two for Mayes guard.
He may be settling a little too much for the long range jumper.
I know they're trying to get the inside outside game going, but I'm going to Alexander Johnson early.
Well, it's sort of like football.
If you want to establish your offense, why don't you go with the run first and then try to pass?
And that's what you would think would happen.
Alexander But getting a few good looks inside just missed a couple.
But you know, that's not going to last long.
There's that zone by Mayes, which means you will have some easy inside outside shots But again trying to force that.
Alexander That time running.
Mayes That's what they told like to do no good Rebound Michael Billings, who will try to start things off.
Michael taking it to the hole, looking and pulling back the smart thing to do because he's got back on defense.
There's another jumper, high margin option.
Got it.
All that we know just that you have to call that when John Haynes is looking over saying I'll call it next time at all costs to a seven guard, he takes the lead, 150 left in the first quarter of the quarter finals.
Oh, nice, Craig.
Nice move.
Nice move.
Very nicely done by Matthew Mitchell.
And we go back and forth and still pressing with that stamina as Mayes, looking for that long pass and taking it over the half court, just not get the seven second call and has been everything that we thought it would be tight shots Hester Only three pointers like that.
You know Gordon Mayes might have stepped over the line and long range jumper off the back board from the head of the key When I was playing the state championship game in 65, a little guard from Lagrange Grange, that one just like that.
But from about ten feet out, I knew we were in big trouble.
When they start thanking them from the head of the circle in the game, was that first half.
Well, here we go.
First quarter kid was alginate ended up with 36 that game.
You never know Harrison Gardner never to be heard from again.
Part time.
Mays tried to play the defense.
It is guarded, triggering it.
And there's the three point look one more time inside the three, I believe, on an air ball up top guard, he getting on the boards and there's Alexander putting things up and it is ten nine 111 ball was actually blocked by Michael Williams or Fon Williams but Alexander there to clean it up like you said and no good Alexander with the rebound let me mention you can listen and watch all the state playoff games on the internet simply go to WW dot GP D Georgia org and follow the links.
All the games will be available for the entire month.
That's w w w dot gp b george w w w dot gp d dawg.
Yes, I missed some of the action, but here we go is me playing The good defense gets the rebound and they're tricking it and then trying to get a lead long three pointers.
Is someone stealing it?
And I think it is.
Mr. Mitchell But he does not go on it back and forth.
We go after Shakur Nice pass inside Terrance Nice look and finishing it off as John Haynes was just inside and outside and all of a sudden this 12 on the 70 seconds to go guard.
He is up and they got a basket out of chaos.
That's not the way you draw it up, but they'll take it.
Here we go.
The triggerman and you'll see this all night.
Matthew Mitchell to the Hoop looks to one of the Williams brothers.
Not to be but up and a foul.
And when you're a coach with no time left on the clock you hate to see that set to the foul line He will go mad Mitchell knew what he wanted to do.
He's drawn in addition and a couple of times he's made the good penetration but throwing the ball a little low to two on a couple of passes.
But he's doing the right thing.
Well early going, we just out of two things.
It's going to be a tough match up for Guardian.
Matthew Mitchell, who's been taking it to the hole.
It is going to be a tough matchup, as we saw for Alexander underneath Alexander.
Of course, he's got to maintain his standing there.
He's a, oh, I don't know, six, four.
Looks like he goes about 230, must be a football player.
But he averages eight rebounds a game and he's the guy that also helps out inside with Alexander Johnson.
Jason works at the line excuse me is not Jason Biggs.
That is Marcus Long at the line shooting for me.
What a good game.
I mean, some good looks so far and it's exciting.
It's just the guys are going to start to warm up.
They need to see a lot more of the shots on the drop, especially from the inside.
And Alexander side again, well, in 80%, Foster makes the second one.
So after one quarter of play has been tight all the way, 12 to 10 Mavs.
We'll be right back with the quarter championship row.
They're going to give a little more time here because this is zero zero on the clock.
Let's see what happens.
Someone's going to have to touch it.
There you go.
All right.
That goes.
We do have one heck of a first quarter.
So there's me down right here.
The guard is, as you see, Alexander inside.
We'll be right back with the floor championship right after this.
Funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following.
You're watching the NCAA basketball championships on TV last this.
Welcome back.
As you see today, up on May 12, 210, up and down seesaw battle as we thought Alexander a little tight inside may have been able to penetrate, but so far what we saw pressing and one team slowing it down, trying to go inside exactly a whole bunch of lead changes.
Nobody able to get the upper hand very even six lead changes in that first quarter.
And you were right, a little tightness, saw some easy shots, minutes.
I think things will pick up, probably a little low scoring right now.
And here we go.
Mason down at half court.
There you see Dani and both teams, five for 17.
So they're getting two looks and May three for 11.
I'm no math whiz.
A lot of people went to college to get to that, but that is a low percent.
Just off the top of my head, I would think it's 29%.
The Guardian 27 for Mary Long three pointer and that will certainly help 13 to 12.
Baze goes up and we expect it to warm up a little darty bringing it back.
I'm going to be looking inside.
Alexandra I have a feeling there it is right there and it loses the ball and that's what you feel, that scrappy team and that's what Mayes does.
They're swarming him every time he touches the ball in the middle.
Pull it back out there, Matthew.
2 minutes.
Well, he's looking start nice pass up and very nicely done as Michael Williams finishes it off And Wesley told you things are warming up.
1512 We just started the second quarter of the quarter championships Nice curl tech by Michael Wiggins there and Matthew found them wrong Airball and no good And that's not what you want to do when you've got a guy 610 and he's inside now.
Coach Givens didn't like that shot shot too quickly.
You want to work that ball around the perimeter.
Some see if you can get to get a nice look inside Alexander Johnson.
If you're going to settle for the jump shot, make sure you're wide open.
And he's taken a look at your big guy a few times.
First and easy to say when we're sitting here and we are pumped up earlier today, as you see a state championship celebrating a winner, big of a group of 58 to 39 made with the ball shooting outside off the back, but still so quick they get a lot of loose balls already.
Double-A championship by the way you saw with Calhoun 70 to 67 and another three pointer and someone is hot and his name is Mitchell, and all of a sudden he's got an 18 to 12 game as he starts warming up.
And I'm trying here, if I'm starting, I new look inside.
That's a tough little shot.
And there's the guy inside out of town for the nice chip 1814.
Alexander is going to get a lot of those as the game goes on.
And maybe now his worst down guard.
He's dropping back in his own now And with those big guys underneath, maybe a pretty good idea, maybe trying to make menace to themselves on the outside when he says okay, no, no, the rebound and that's what he's doing.
Getting those second shots which tend to kill you.
Mays with no really big players, but several players, six, 5 to 6, seven.
And they can all jump, like you said earlier.
Well, I'm going to tell you one thing.
Matthew Mitchell is calling for the ball.
He's doing everything but sending up smoke signals and he's got it right now.
When he gets a feel, you just want to throw it up from the foul line up.
And you had a confidence shot by Michael Williams 20 to 4539.
Mays is up in the second quarter of this quarter championship.
Mays with a really balanced team.
They have about five or six players averaging averaged eight points and above.
They've got a lot of weapons foul inside.
And as we talked about, Mays sort of feeds off their defense service.
They start getting it going on defense, maybe some transition baskets.
We'll get it for him and get them going to have a guard.
He's doing a pretty good job against the press right now.
They have.
We haven't really had a steal in a lay up that I can remember unless it was early in the ballgame.
So guarding, doing a good job against the press, it's in their halfcourt offense that they really haven't gotten it cranked up yet.
My take is Stanley will go to the line decision to shoot himself You see they can do the left hand pick it up and him very stout looking young man will be surprised if he gets on the gridiron every fall.
He hasn't missed many pregame meals.
I'll agree with that.
Second one is up second.
What is good?
Nice touch for the big fella.
It's always fun watching his left hander shoots 2216 526 left Mays holding on to a four point lead.
And now we see a little backcourt pressure by darting what you can do, we can do.
Trying to disrupt Mays a little bit.
They were settling in and starting to hit some jumpers.
Now they're going back straight man to man.
28 from dishing it off.
And sometimes that's just a little carried away.
And maybe Mitchell is feeling a little too much.
We shall see.
Now, number 30 seems a little more settled, taking that extra pass right now.
And there's a good idea that's a good idea to get the pass to him, because that's not a center.
That's two more points.
And now we've got a two point game.
Blazers up Alexander maybe 610.
They list him at 610.
Looks like he's about six.
Nine maybe, but he's got a lot of bulk on any of the inside players for Mays and you could see it in Brown as we know and Curtis doing color.
He is also at this point discussing hard some ways and he's very good at it.
As Mays tries to take something inside.
You're right that we're talking about it before the game, but six, nine, six, ten, when he got back to town, he can go sticking a talent to the hole.
Sometimes Mitchell is getting a little carried away and his teammates aren't ready for those passes.
Well, that's exactly right.
That wasn't a bad pass there.
And when he goes to the bucket, you better know what's coming to you if he doesn't take the shot.
So get your hands right and be ready to go up with 419 left with a two can tie with the foul.
They can take the lead and they don't.
Looking for the good shots there is to play his way off bounces there Alexander with a touchdown inside 2020.
It is not the show it's the score of the game and as soon as Alexander's started to take over a little hurt.
Yeah, he really bullied his way back with that when he put the forearm in and went up strong with it.
And Floyd Mack does not look what he's like, what he's seeing right now.
Long three pointer no good rebound by Jared I think off their knee Let's see maybe he's going to get the ball.
Matthew Mitchell has put up a lot of shots already.
He he's feeling it one way.
And how do you feel when your brother comes in for you?
I guess it's okay.
It's better that way.
You don't feel so bad when the coach is taking you out.
Maybe it's a trigger it in trying to take the lead.
They've had it most of the second quarter, but now it is time.
2020.
As long as they don't give him any of his fouls, I'm sure it'll be all right with us.
341 left, Titus, we've got Mayes looking inside.
All right, we've got a box and one now.
It's like the man to man in Matthew Mitchell, and he's playing zone on the inside.
Oh, that's a tough shot.
And it does not go on to fight for the ball.
Mayes ends up with it jam so quick.
That was another good play for Marcus LAMB, who got it into the hole.
They will go.
And I'll tell you what, Matthew Mitchell, when you're players, you know you're quicker and you can take it to the hole.
You will continue to go to the hole.
It's a good idea.
He's creating a run in there, picked up the foul, then on the drive he has turned it over two or three times.
But you can't change your game at this stage.
You got to go with what brought you here.
Working around slippery ball possession, arrow going guard his way.
Hayes seems to be having a lot of problem catching some passes.
I don't know if it's concentration or whatever it is.
Looking for Alexander Johnson coming up to try to steal that.
But Williams having some trouble for all the guys going to the finals.
How much more pressure is on you in the finals as opposed to the semifinals?
Oh, the jitters out by now, or at least by the second quarter.
Do you still feel the nerves?
No, I think they're probably gone by now.
You know, it's hard to say what's going through a player's mind.
I think he was looking for Alexander Johnson behind him.
Now, solid zone action by Mayes and looking inside for that man, Alexander.
And why not?
He has been getting some easy hooks and good looks at the basket.
There he is inside, double teamed right around and he is back.
And take your choice of about three or four Mays players because they were all in there staying in that three two zone.
And it's just basically a212.
But you drop it, you bring in a guy of how to play in front of Johnson.
Here's the replay He's got good body balance is getting taken to the hole strong Nicely done Only a junior Alexander Johnson in case we haven't mentioned one good chance of being some pretty impressive numbers and you better believe that there are some college coaches camping outside his gym.
His favorite hangout in high school, and a nice touch on that front.
So you like to see them, the big guy, because he's going to be shooting a lot of them over his career.
And you want to see him step up there and make 257 left, 20 to 20 guard He has regained the lead and there's been a series of runs and there you go again.
Here it is.
That bad past the past already.
And all of a sudden three or four turnovers and blocking information that when someone from guarding that's happened before went out of bounds.
A tough angle for Kevin Wilkinson to make that pass into Michael Williamson 243 left and countdown joined by two and there that's not a that's not an offense there as a block out by maze is lucky the arrows point their way but now it's getting a little clogged up.
Yeah, their spacing is not real good right now.
The pass a minute ago, the spacing wasn't good.
And there you saw the drive attempt by Matthew.
There is just a not good spacing to make right now.
He's got a push underneath and they were working side.
There was a definite mismatch that they were looking for.
It was Michael Williams.
We had him posted the third personal there.
Here comes the beef to that.
Maybe a Stanley back in for guarding it less than a64 and I bet he goes about two 2529 games so far and he's trying to be a little more patient on the offense.
Looking inside, the Brother Williams probably did the most damage in there.
30 very aggressive in that zone.
It's not a pass as they come out, gets it up, it goes off, it throws nurse gets in the game to do that very same rebound.
Very nicely done guarded lay and back for him, not even close.
And sometimes if you know you're feeling it, you might want to pull it back a little and look inside.
158 left, 20 to 23, still holding on to a very, very slim lead for Mac Last time down, Thomas, Spread it out.
Spread it out.
Let's open this thing out.
And it might not be a bad idea spreading it out.
They are doing well.
Intimidation right there.
Alexander Johnson made him see set ball completely over the basket.
We've been talking about run really all day To win away long three is an air ball tied up underneath all the jump ball possession and we're going made his way I think if you ask those coaches right now they'd say they're not playing their game.
I don't think either team probably playing up to their abilities.
But sometimes when you're playing against that great competition, it can take you out of your ball game and you get the feeling that whichever of these teams heats up and gets into their tempo first is going to win this ballgame.
First one that makes a run.
Maybe when we're talking about a run maybe ten, 12 points, somebody just settles into the rhythm.
Neither team really seems to have a rhythm right now.
Well, as far as the three pointers go, maybe they should hold off on those in the second half.
One, three, four, seven.
Inside Alexander, seven, five one The Rolling Stones.
But not to be Michael trying to go up and block it.
But this Alexander took it up hard.
You got to give Michael credit for going up and challenged and he got up high enough, but he doesn't have the ball to block it without foul.
311 more time.
Alexander Johnson will be getting that a lot in the next year.
As soon as this comes back, he will be the man with the target.
And we should mention that the first one goes to Johnson.
But both these teams are young and could very well be back here in the same situation that you wouldn't be surprised at all for three time guarding.
Make it 24 117 left.
Glad you're with us.
20 Championship guarding against Mason and it's a four point game with 114 left these first think Johnson got a piece of that one and one thing to start his own has done is he slowed down Mike MATTHEWS Mitchell on the penetration where you want to get a little momentum turn into halftime get a good shot maybe even go to the foul line.
Four point game six would be nicer on the alley oop.
Alexander Johnson gets it brings it down It's very nice up and down.
And the times in the last three or four trips has hasn't been better.
Alexander getting a rebound for the alley oop to Alexander and that's why they're edging out front a little bit like you said one for ten from three point distance isn't going to get it done.
They had to try it early to see if they can loosen this thing up.
But now they're going to their bread and butter, man, and they just throw the ball up there anywhere and he goes up to get it very strong.
As you mentioned, he gets up from the top three sacks to the outside and they just keep seemingly trying to wear down this team.
And it's like an erosion.
It seems like it's working.
41 seconds left.
Second quarter right here is goes to the bench and Kevin Wilkinson comes back down for nice and got to see good hustle right now and block and I can see he was hustling but it is like Johnson doesn't go like a little rookie over shortage that is Alexander that's the shot prices rising ten three pointer when the coach is going no no no three and he may not want to see that because you don't want to see him taking another one.
I'll guarantee you three pointer back no rebound Williams Yes.
Reset it and take your time.
Maybe Mays has 7 seconds to go.
Second quarter last shot time will they got it?
No, they're the steal and there's room for the long shot and do not count out of halftime with a late run guarded going inside to Alexander Johnson a second rate point lead 28 to 20 and Herb maybe that is previews of what may just happen in the third and fourth quarter.
Yeah Alexander Johnson really began to assert himself there.
Our man on the sidelines, Rob Trible.
He'll be keeping us updated on what the coaches think.
Let's go to Rob.
Rob, first half pretty good.
All right.
It's kind of up and down so far, Coach, you withstood a nice flurry from Mayes.
How are you guys able to kind of gain a little bit of control and get a lead going into the locker room?
Well, we started rebounding a little bit better and stopping the penetration on the point guard.
Do you really want your big man, Alexander Johnson, taking three pointers?
Oh, yeah.
We let him take the three pointers during the season.
They weren't a big lineup, so we kind of act with our big lineup and when we go to our big lineup, he becomes a three man.
You said you're concerned about May size coming in, but it seems like Alexander Johnson's dictating everything underneath, at least offensively.
Well, that's what we want Malik plays in and now control the game on inside then our chance of the winning a great All right that's it from the parquet floor.
Let's go back to you, Stu.
All right.
Alexander Johnson, only a junior and 610.
I'd let him take three pointers, too.
He's coming back for another year, 2820.
And his journey up on upper 40 championships.
Come right back.
We're back after this.
Funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following.
This is GB TV, your PBS station serving Atlanta and all of Georgia GPD TV bringing you the best.
You're watching the USA Basketball Championships on TV.
And welcome back to the Center Flex and Macon.
We're here at halftime today leading Mayes 28 to 25, a game coming up.
The two teams are warming up, as you can see on the floor right now, the Savannah Blue Jackets and the first mark, Patriots right now.
Again, once I said we're at halftime garden lead to 28 to 20 at the half.
Let's go courtside.
And Rob Hey Rob.
Thanks Gary.
I'm Gary.
Jim, whatever your name is, I'm a story.
Principal Charlie Frazier.
You know, things are really going well.
Back to school.
You want a basketball title in 97, A football title 98, and you're knocking on the door of another title.
Now, what is it about that Albany City School?
Well, that's one of the schools that has some pretty good athletes since in the four years that I have been there and we've been knocking on the door in basketball now for the last year, we made it to the semifinals and this year we're back in the finals.
And we got we've gotten all the way to the final game.
And tonight it's looking pretty good for us right now because we have an eight point lead and we're hoping that we can hold on Mase kind of quick, but I think we can hold on because we've had these kind of games all season long and we played the team that won the Tripoli state title in Western, played them three times and that was great competition for us.
I want to ask you about John.
Earl's a great high school coach who passed away recently.
I had a chance to do a couple of features on him, wonder what a wonderful man he was and a credit to his profession.
How much is he miss down there?
Doherty Well, he's missed an awful lot because I think it kind of had an effect on our team and their performance during the past season because that was an off year for us and we don't think that we would have had that kind of season if it had not because of his passing.
He passed in August and we had that hanging over our heads.
But we think now that we're back on the right track and we can put it all behind us now and we can get back on the right track that we've been on since he's been there.
Well, it's people like Coach Reynolds and Coach Gibbons has really put you guys on the map.
All right.
Let's go back to Jim's Pinocchio.
All right.
Thanks a lot, Robb.
Well, I tell you what, the big day we've had single-A, Double-A, triple-A games at halftime of the quarter.
Again, now a lot more to come to you here on TV.
We'll be talking to the new executive director of the GHC, Ralph Swearingen, after this ball game.
So I'll look forward to that interview with Dr. Ralph Swearengen.
Okay.
We go back down courtside now and Mr.
Rob Trimble, it seems like I'm spending an awful lot of time with the principals.
It's kind of like my days in high school anyway, so I'm used to.
This is Ronald Brown from his high school.
You guys are looking for your first team title in any sport.
How much would it mean to finally get one tonight?
We came here to win the night would mean a whole lot.
Not only to amaze our school, but for the city of Atlanta, a lot of public schools in particular.
So just tell me a little bit about this team, how they've done this year.
They've done very, very well.
I think we have about four seniors on the team point guard, basically ad1 player, but they've played in the tournaments over the Christmas holidays up in North Carolina.
So they've gotten a lot of exposure and they've put themselves together as a pretty good, cohesive team.
You kind of alluded to the fact of gaining respect for the city of Atlanta.
City of Atlanta hasn't really fare too well athletically over the last several years.
It's like you're playing for them as well as yourselves.
Yeah, we're playing for the whole city of Atlanta public schools as well as ourselves.
We want to send a message.
Hopefully tonight we will get that message sent, I guess, when we're down by eight points right now.
But I expect the kids to come out and kind of take shots the second half.
You must like your chances because you're wearing the number one lapel right there.
Let's go back to Jim's Pinocchio.
Yeah.
All right.
Thanks, Ron Tribble.
And of course, as I mentioned earlier, we had a bunch of ball games.
It all began at 12 noon this afternoon with the single-A championship one.
Here we go, Buford Teller County, a key department, had a big game, a nice easy layup there for Taylor County.
Edwin McCleary can't count him out.
Check out this follow up.
Buford battled back.
Rico Brown from downtown with the three pointer.
Antoine McClendon was just too easy on the other end for Taylor County.
Buford hung in there though Rico Brown's cousin Theo Brown, also from downtown with the three pointer Wolves, were within ten points At that point.
McCleary just took over with a dunk and another one coming up here.
The celebration was on for Taylor County, winning it 5839 over Buford McCreery ends up game high 17 points.
Isaac Brown had 15 points for the losing Wolves of Buford Double game, a great game.
CALHOUN And he's tall, he's tall, look tough all the way through.
But we begin with Casey Baxter from Calhoun had a big ballgame for the Yellowjackets, but the Vikings were just too tough.
Derrick Jones, check out this three pointer.
No doubt about nothing but the bottom of the net.
He's tall.
Come back, Causey to Causey.
You find somewhere down the middle.
I mean, I'll tell what Mark Causey, what a ball game for Moyer.
Another big three pointer there.
He's Paul was just piling it on Kevin Anderson down low for Calhoun.
The Yellowjackets hung in there, but he was always tall in the long run.
I mentioned Mark Causey.
He's got a brother named Matt.
And boy, I tell you what a game for Matt as well.
The easy layup for Matt and the celebration was on.
He's tall winning at 7867 over Calhoun.
And congratulations to head coach Seth Vining and his entire staff over at East Hall.
Now we had triple-A games also coming up this Westover and Mitchell Baker.
Here are those highlights and WESTHOVEN Up and running in the early going down Williams styles in the three pointer then on the transition Jarvis Williams with the steal Derrick Haywood with the off and Mitchell Baker was on a roll but back comes west over Hey check out this guy credit Greg pitch yes no doubt about it And then on the transition off the fast break you think this guy is good around 20 points for ten trying the ball game.
Mitchell Baker came back Quintin Davis from three point plan, but this one belonged to Westover Darrel Williams from long distance.
He had 24 points on the game and we have to finish it off with this big guy looking much done.
And Mitchell Baker falls short to the Patriots of Westover.
7844 Congratulations to head coach Willie Boston.
What a game Willie Boston retires after 37 years right on top where he should be.
All right.
We're going to take a break from the big playoff action here in Macon.
We'll return with more from the county championship right after this.
Funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball championships is provided in part by the following.
You're watching member supported TV, your PBS station bringing you the best part.
You're watching the USA Basketball Championships on TV.
Welcome back to the Quad Boys High School Championships, already up by 828 to 20 minutes.
Let's take a look at the first half action.
Herb.
It was back and forth.
Nine lead changes inside and outside.
Both Mays and Dani were getting it done.
GMAC, Mitchell With the penetration early in the ballgame and dished out for seven nice assists.
But the story of this game really in the first half has been the big guy, the big man, the junior, as you see one more three pointer to run him by Mays.
But Alexander, 19 points eight rebounds.
Alexander Johnson has been dominant.
Why?
Well, because he's so talented.
He's so quick.
Yeah.
We're going to get a look at some halftime statistics here in a minute.
And as you see field goal what was thought the shooting not that great but the four rebounds what jumps out at you right there Dhani again with Johnson can take control in the boards a seven rebound advantage and there hasn't been you know many rebounds that he hasn't gotten inside.
And I'll tell you those things are two points that nobody on the turnover surprises me because it's been a lot.
Let's see what happens in the second half.
Welcome back.
It is Maze again, starting here we go.
The third quarter and Maze often attacking it.
It's that man again to the hoop, maybe trying to establish something early.
Matthew Mitchell takes it right to the holes to Matt Mitchell in the first half.
He hits some threes early and then he started driving and dishing and he went to the zone defense to stop the penetration and that kind of shut down the mayor's office.
That's when they kind of broke down.
The spacing, got bad.
So they've really got to work on that and maybe Matt Mitchell can get it going again this time.
MITCHELL Now with 12 points, Chris had 11 in the first half.
He was the one that was penetrating.
He was the one that was taken to the hole as Troy Mack looks on saying, Come on, guys, it's only eight points now.
Seven we can come back.
Second was upset upset of good 2822 just in the third quarter.
It is guarded by six.
The first plays off the Mavs right there if they can score right off the turnovers.
We mentioned only two points in this game off of turnovers and it would seem like it'd be a lot different from Gone three pointer by Sarti and Jason Woods is good.
Well, I think Doherty was about one for 11 for three pointers in the first half, maybe two after Alexander Johnson hits 11.
But the first one they make and that's going to be big.
You know, this is pace is really Mesa's pace as far as scoring because they only averaged 52 points a game.
Even though they play up and down, they don't average that many points.
And Doherty averages 65 per game.
So they're under their average right now, but not by much.
So we think they're going to heat up and we saw the shooting percentages at the half and they weren't that good.
But here we go with Mason, the three pointer off a fun round up and down is good.
And it is the shooter's role, as we always like to say.
Giannis a connect with the bucket more pressure Mayes all over it and let's see what happens it is quickening the pace okay so downtown the great jumpers normally do a nice slam dunk like you see those off the back of the rim and you get two steps down, up and down.
We go here just in the third quarter and the pace has quickened.
You can feel it now.
Matt Mitchell out of control there.
He's trying to force it just a little bit too much, trying to come back after that slam dunk got the crowd fired up here.
You'll see it.
Watch this one is Eric Webster up and down and very nicely done six five senior and he can sky but is that really skying to you You've done that many times in his young career.
Well, it's going to most people still let's face it.
But that's a great basket for that kid.
He's a senior.
That's one he'll always remember.
I'm sure he's going to have a tape of the game.
And I'll say, check this out, folks 3325 705 to go in the third quarter, Darren still getting out of that league.
Alexander Johnson, as we mentioned, the dominant player for Derby and there's Mitchell doing it for me.
What you watch always watching.
I appreciate bringing the game but you like going to the internet and doing some of listening.
Well, I try to stay playoff games on the internet.
We go to WW driving a dog being shot list.
All of these will be available one time once you get back on the computer.
I want to see how well you did this game.
Urbis w w w dot g p b dot org is a technology one that says I can barely I can barely start my computer to get this.
Are you kidding?
I live on that bulldog chat line.
That is the basketball season.
I just found out Yahoo wasn't just a threat to go third quarter knew who I was.
I know it If I tried to switch around Alexander Johnson trying to break it up wide open underneath him, One of the other guys he was trying to call for to get the ball flips.
Webster was open.
Here we go.
A little handling, trying to get it inside, and we're starting to decide this defense is good and terrorist and someone's injured.
And I haven't gotten the number yet.
And I'm guessing, like Scott, I'm right on the nose.
Marcus Long did catch one run on the bridge of the nose guard.
He seems to have settled down first.
Offensively, they're really taking their time.
They're spacing is good.
Alexander Johnson With the nice moves in and trying to dish off down low but guard he looks like they're more relaxed right now than Mase does may still struggle here you see it adolescent sad to see it just look like a hand might have come across and he's okay.
Here we go.
640 18. game start He is up Alexander Hamilton over and that's going to be offensive there And it was a good call you know when did Eric Webster remember he had a chip jam Maybe he's going a little adrenaline flow and trying to take it to the hall.
Well, I recognize those offensive fouls.
I spent my whole career doing this.
So what's the scouting report?
I mean, really, you're like, you know, those jumpers?
Just give him the outside shot in front of him.
Try to run you over.
There we go.
Still an eight point game.
That's what it was at halftime.
Mase tries to find seconds, but he's taking the side.
No good up again.
No staying on the boards.
No.
Alexander did try.
Alexander Johnson says he's going to lead the fight.
Here we go.
I know some of it's going to be, but not to be.
And why not just take it in yourself?
That was Jason Woods.
Nice drive to the hole for 3525 guarded.
And that is a discouraging possession for me that five shots and he couldn't get it down and then Golden State amazing and he's getting into that time of day right there that's five wins and it goes out on him where one more bucket and you might want to think about calling a time out because this is the one we've been talking about the entire game.
That's great action about the basket there.
Alexander Johnson up the block that dunk attempt by the way just good press pressure by now he's to John Box in a little under 6 minutes to go and a little out of control Let's see what happens what is the call stepped on the sideline and this is the time really both teams need to settle down Jordy Pardon Thanks.
Hey, we got a little rolling.
Slow this thing open.
May we got to do something.
Maybe you're taking shots that I want to settle down right now.
There's the man to do it up over.
No good Easy shots.
I'm not far.
Here comes started.
I'm going to set you up on that one 6 seconds possession.
I think there were three turnovers on the one six.
It went back and forth.
529 left 3525 yards up by chance, Mays trying to settle down, trying to get some motion on offense, trying to look for a good shot.
And that's what they need to go for the foul.
Yeah, I think Mays needs to pass the ball around a little bit this quick.
You know, you get down to and you look out of that clock and you're still down ten.
But there's a lot of time left in this basketball game and now they just don't have the shots.
The selection process will go to the lines.
So from there for a year and that's the time to slow things down, get some star shots.
And Mays is a very, very good free throw shooting team.
All their starters is running at 70% or above.
So you know who's out there with the ball.
Get a good shot, go the foul which got us up to the second half.
That's where we were at halftime.
Got quick pressure still joining with no trouble right here but also close to that edge.
In midcourt when you press, the main thing to do is that they get it over.
Find your man.
Mays did that amazing and straight man to man right now.
There it is.
That ball is going on the ground.
I'm saying with the all symbol, it wouldn't be a football game right now.
You can ask Lester who really is good getting open underneath somebody lost there man They're wide open.
Mays on the attack long three pointer This guy is good and yes he that man Mitchell with the 347 3440 to go guarding now down off only by seven Well that was a huge basket by Mitchell He misses out on another quick shot They could have been in trouble but it went down and now they're only down seven.
Well, you know we were talking about it.
It could go either way.
But they seem to have weathered that little storm.
Are you sure they missed that easy sequence inside?
It looked like you're right, Guard.
He was starting to get their offense together, but not to be.
Here's the three points.
Mitchell loves rolling it up and low as he does.
Nice three pointer.
We'll come back to live action with Doherty on the wing.
Alexander needs to get up outside and underneath when you're 610.
Just in the long run.
He is good by Jason Wallace.
He's done that a couple times.
Now he's back up to 1030.
It's going to be real tough on Mesa's Jason Woods heats up, along with Alexander Johnson inside Roberson play that comes off about a foot and a half Sure Bad idea by Tony.
But when everybody else starts throwing him up and they start going in, you're thinking, why not me?
You got here.
We see that three again by Jason Brooks.
Right side of them, right up in the face.
Yeah, he did have a nice little bounce.
And you wonder after you heard what the principal of Mays said at halftime about Mays trying to win this one for the whole city of Atlanta, you wonder if they feel a little pressure in that respect.
Well, there you see the shooting and neither team is burning it up, but they have in the last few minutes.
But Mays under 30% figures right around 30%.
Long shot by Johnson.
No.
If that goes, it could have been an 11 rebound again by Webster's guard.
He will try to start over with another good shot.
Looking inside to Johnson, who spins and what moves he has for a 610 yard, Johnson keeps those arms up high.
He put it on you.
When he goes to make it, they let him get away with it.
So why not allow That can be the symbol that got him.
His elbows in the league.
Got a famous 76 there.
Glad you're with us on the quad.
A championship boys game here in Macon City.
Cryogenic Herbalife bringing you all the action starting against Mays ten point game and there's another traumatic back and forth they go good try by Johnson and they get back on place hugging the ref right now let's see what Mays can do with the man advantage.
Nice move.
There's a very nice move by Mitchell, who is keeping Mays in this game.
Smart play because he knew Alexander Johnson wasn't down the floor, the shot blocker wasn't there and they come up with the steal two on one pass plays.
Listen, the guys have a huge fight.
Mitchell is holding it in there.
What the hell is going on?
What are the Derby fans wondering about a traveling call?
But I don't think the official can figure out he never had possession of the ball, so they're not going to call that a whistle.
Well, it looked like a kick ball here for a second.
Could have been a kick.
It could have been a travel.
It's been an interesting game back and forth, just as we think one team is going to take away.
We didn't run away with it.
It doesn't happen.
By the way, I don't know if you've heard, but the hottest new program to air on PBS is coming soon.
You're watching high school students chatter their lives on video.
Don't miss American High starts April 4th, right here on GOP TV.
Yeah, we're starting to try to tune into that teenage audience the CBC has never really reached before.
But, you know, it's a high school football basketball.
We have our weekly high school show, prep sports.
Plus we've got American high heels and we've got another great program coming up in the next several months trying to find out about some inner city kids.
We followed them for several years throughout careers, and it's going to be a tremendous show.
So hopefully get those kids watching public television in their teens and keep them for a long time.
When you do terrific job.
Just happy to be part of the high school coverage.
And this is my first year.
I got into doing it for a while, which was a job you guys didn't do for just 33 weeks.
The way we typically use this thing.
And I'm back.
Okay, Mitchell is back soon.
So is many 2034.
It is the closest it's coming along while a six point game and all of a sudden Dorie says, let's take a time out, let's talk this thing over.
And all of a sudden, I hate to say it, but the momentum has changed.
Yeah, well, this crew is not going to go away.
I can guarantee you that.
They're sitting there, know they've got some age on them.
They know it's not time to panic.
They settle down a little bit as well.
So I think we're going to settle in.
And then we talked earlier.
I'm looking for a close ballgame now.
Both these teams are is certainly pressing is that we're already at all, do you think or.
No, I don't think so.
Sorry.
He seems to be in good shape as far as the condition goes.
By the way, don't miss Georgia's only state high School Sports and Academics program is called Prep Sports, Plus Saturday mornings at 11:00.
It's right here on Jeep's TV Prep Sports plus Saturday mornings at 11 right here on Juicy TV.
That press is working for me.
They're aggressive.
They've got a little confidence and they just seem a step quicker right now.
Yeah, they were using the zone press earlier, but now they've gone to the straight man to man.
Run and jump.
You might call it trying to double team when they have the opportunity and their quickness is becoming the focus.
The old run and jump, jump and run.
North Carolina made a Spanish guard.
He breaks it long three pointer off the back of the rim.
Alexander Johnson tries to get it but not to be.
And when you're making a run, when you're coming back and you're a coach, you don't want your team taking three pointers.
Let's try to work something closer, get a little bit of a quick shot.
You want to get another bucket up there to extend Mason's run, But they went ahead and took the three just 3 minutes left in the third quarter.
Minnesota has had another one of those passes.
Good pass.
Good looks just wasn't ready for it.
Yeah, well, I'll tell you what.
Because of Alexander Johnson's presence in there, the players have a tendency to try to get the ball up.
Kevin Wilkinson was looking for Johnson instead of the ball.
Mayes taking the time.
That is the man of the hour going to the is in a game.
His name is Matt Mitchell and he is running the show and running it well, sorry.
And a straight man to man, one of the Williams brothers trying to push down low.
That is Michael.
So far no good touchdown.
The coach said look for a good shot.
And now there's one who is off by Mitchell.
But here we go.
The other.
Sorry.
Now let's see what they can do.
And and if I have them, I'm saying let's see what number 32 is.
Yeah.
I got to go with the big guy here.
Well, I'll tell you, they are strapping.
Mace is all over the court long we know.
What do we know that his car he is a junior and nice shot Perfect time is 40 33413 pointer again the other way Johnson with the rebound draw you on the break and look who's leading it The big guy This guys take it all the way That is a nice job All of a sudden it looked like it was close 2534 157 Yeah.
He has extended the lead now to 11.
It looked like it was going to be tight at the end of the third quarter.
This thing about to get away from me three point shooting running up, but not by much guard he has a6546 team made the switch the same but taken for less and there's two turnovers already has the numbers across the half court up for the job nicely done and it might be time for a timeout.
Nice pull up jumper by Jason Woods.
He's been hot Floyd Mac senior over there thinking about it you may need a timeout and they don't score here They're in big trouble and they're trying to open it up again and it's tough because Johnson just is looming back there for anything that is coming his way.
And normally it is this guy who is coming his way.
There's another turnover, another turnover, a fourth turnover.
LSU has a nice pass inside, but the pressure there and it is getting a little tougher for Mason.
They might want to take their time and Mesa's too discombobulated right now.
And I'm really surprised because Mac hasn't taken a timeout, three or four turnovers in a row and just a couple of passes.
It should have been thrown in and dart.
He can feel it.
I'll guarantee you now we should mention that you're used to watching basketball on TV and sometimes coaches wait for the TV timeout as look Johnson tries to go back up up again no good Johnson with the ball is out of bounds tries to save and Mayes ends up with an all time high point in the second Let's keep up with the action and it is back and forth and turnovers and turnovers.
Well there are no TV timeouts on public television, so, you know, that's what I was trying to explain.
If you're thinking you're waiting for a coach to call it to be found out, it is not going to happen on this network.
So what you have to do is call your own time out.
You are not saved by the TV timeout.
Maybe some people at home who were saying why I'm the coach just is.
Well, they're waiting for the TV timeout.
No the end of each quarter we have a timeout be on that run.
We've been waiting for one and they have been on a slight run, 7 to 2 in the last 2 minutes.
What a huge difference that has made.
And right now it is 4734.
He is up 31 seconds.
And I'll tell you right now, her one possession for me is, don't you think 31 seconds left.
Don't try to do it in one possession.
Try to get a good shot, try to take a little momentum, try to cut the lead down to 11.
And so, guys, it's the fourth quarter.
Let's take it from there.
I would not rush the shot.
Yeah, you're exactly right.
You can't come down and shoot Miss and Hamdani go down and score and open this thing up to 15.
You want it to stay at 13 or you want to be 11 going in or maybe even ten if you can get to three.
But probably try to take a shot with four or 5 seconds.
Good game coming up.
Don't forget classic five seven against Brook Mars.
9:00 is following else another terrific game.
Here we go.
Grandma's looking for that one shot.
So she said look for the one shot and they show I'm just guessing.
But I am thinking that Mitchell might try to penetrate and either take it himself or get it out to one of his good shooters.
He is the man with the ball.
He has had the big game for me, 10 seconds and nine, trying to get down eight.
As you could see.
There he goes up, gets a nice look by one of the wings and it's an airborne.
That's how to join it for four.
It has been all dark in the third quarter.
They've opened it up 4734 authority over me.
We're coming right back for the fourth quarter of the 20 Georgia State championship funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following.
You're watching the NCAA basketball championships on TV.
Go.
Welcome back to the Party Boys Championship Derby up on May 2734 Street by 10:00 at Herbalife.
We're glad you're with us.
And if you're coaching Mays, what do you have to do to win this thing out in the fourth quarter?
Well, you got to go to the press now.
I think they're going to have to really bring out their pressure defense.
This 13 point lead is not that big, but you only got 8 minutes to go and Al Johnson not in any kind of foul trouble.
He's over there right now getting the ball on the bench.
So Mays has got to try to make hay while Johnson's out of the ballgame.
I will tell you what, maybe Jarred is thinking the same thing.
It's going to come at that press because they have a very small lineup and all these guys can handle the ball.
The three come off a three pointer, no good.
There's nothing in West Virginia's size.
Eric Lester has been doing that all night.
Now, all of a sudden, as we start the fourth quarter, it is a 15 point game guarded in control.
Yeah, that would hurt the rebound.
Just pass it down for then block out Looks like a little too free zone there with all that quickness for guarding the big guy on the bench, why not go for the job?
So it is maybe you leave the guys open on the outside, the jumper falls and it's a 13 point game and I thought we had a ball coming right at us.
Here we go.
Tough move inside and Mays with the rebound trying to make a run 4939 719 left in the quarter boys championship to the home Nice line and the reverse layup does not go but what a move Lashley Mitchell trying to go for it so here it is guarded get to the loose balls down there have the numbers but I'm not sure they're going to try to attack the basket.
Let's see, tied up jump ball does a couple things for you, Herbert, but you're rushing your big guy, one at rest, your big guy in two.
You can handle the press a lot easier with your smaller lineup in there.
But as we say that he is resting.
He got, what about oh, a minute now?
He is back he got that Johnson got that in the timeout.
But you know, Alexander Johnson said a good job helping him against the press.
So he really is there's not a guy that's going to hurt you having him in there and guard.
He went to the zone before maybe to try to force Mays to use some time off that clock.
But they're going back man to man.
Now.
It is a 13 point game and someone Mays is going to have to get hot and they're to have to get hot in a hurry.
And this is the man that could very well do it.
Matt Mitchell has had a sensational game.
Long three pointer is no good and they try to get back in the game with something that hasn't been working for you all night.
You just got to take that chance and roll the dice.
Well, you know, Johnson is such a presence inside, he hasn't allowed them to get hardly anything going inside all night.
So they're going to try to come back with a freeze, maybe try to score off the press in and back it out again.
Johnson's in there and they cannot get it.
But you're right, they're looking at the end and then looking to say, where is Johnson?
And when that starts happening, you're in trouble, evenly played or fairly So in the first half, it was an eight point game.
He started to pull away in the third quarter and now 49, 36, the fourth Mays with the pressure, Johnson trying to bring it up and it's a half across half court.
Well, I tell you what, the press is working.
I mean, they're getting the ball.
They're just not putting it in the hoop when they get it down on the other end.
Exactly.
You had to convert those turnovers into points.
No, not here.
Balls in a row on the three.
So I would try to get mid range jumpers and try to hit from there or really try to score somehow off transition just what Jordy is trying to do here.
Up no good.
And here comes me again.
Hey, guys.
The Bulletin.
Yep.
Michael Williams with the board.
Mitchell might try to take this game over.
Just take it to the hoop and take the jumper.
You're the man is going to get an upset shot.
And good night for Mitchell.
Finally.
There's just nothing but offense.
4938 Is there enough time?
535 and Kelly Well they got to create some turnovers and we get the five second call right there trying to get the ball in bounds again Mayes needs to convert this into a basket, cut this thing under double digits.
So we talked early on.
The key to this ballgame is going to be how to contain Johnson inside and he's scoring a lot of points for four guarding inside.
But the main thing, Johnson's benefactor is on defense tonight because has been looking for him every time they touch the ball in the paint, trying to get the ball in bounds.
And you're right, we're talking about Johnson's offense in containment, but his defense has made the difference.
What a game that guy is.
That was an interesting statement.
Another turnover.
And slowly but surely, that clock is ticking down on the season, locked down, 518 to go, 11 point game.
Mayes needs to get hot off the you know go up and in and look at that turnover JavaScript Mayes that's that's nine ball games that's the whole ballgame.
So I think it's great considering one team is pressing most of the time.
So Gordon, the other team is putting a lot of pressure on.
So yeah, I agree with that.
The amazing thing is that Mayes has had a lot of those turnovers but hasn't converted on a lot of those turnovers.
Exactly.
I'd like to see the points after turnovers.
I don't know if we have that stat we probably don't, but well, in the first half we know there was about seven or eight and there's only two points off of that.
So I'm not much sure that they've done much more of those 11 inside.
Nice move.
Alexander Johnson was a Saadi and he'll shoot two nice spin move by the big guy He's the kind of player that can play the power forward no doubt about it.
Or even maybe just a small forward, depending on where he ends up.
But he can handle the ball.
He's got a nice touch, but you don't want a guy like him too far away from the basket.
Remember the name Alexander Johnson, only a junior and a big time player?
5244 56 left guard.
He has been in control most of the second half.
Mayes has been scrappy.
They've been tough on the boards.
They've been tough on defense, but haven't been able to convert.
Look at those numbers.
There was 20 double double already and he's probably got four or five six blocked shots.
Not bad.
And no good RIM job 5044 55 left Mayes on the attack.
And I have a feeling Mitchell knows what's going to happen.
It's going to come through me.
So nothing doing good defense by guard is backing it in.
Why not make things up?
Oh, look, Alexander Johnson with a shot.
No good but with that have brought the house down.
And we knew that was going to be a meeting at the summit.
Both players up about the top of the box.
Johnson trying to cram it down and Mayes trying to play defense.
But let's watch this one on the replay and see what kind of guy these guys get.
The elevator from Decatur.
He remembers these days when he would come in and just slam it down nicely.
Time.
You know, most times it's not for the big guys.
It's not so much the slam, It's the three dribbles they have to make to get to the floor.
And that wasn't bad.
I mean, he could dribble normally.
It's is kicking it somewhere.
Another arena shot is good.
Well, Kevin Wilkinson has twice now tried to block Johnson's stumps and come away with a foul.
Pretty tough assignment to try to stop that big guy for 31 or 31 to go and look at Johnson's stance again.
He's you know, and as I said, he's probably got five or six blocks still.
But a lot of times it's not the actual blocked shot.
It's just his presence in the lane.
And you see Mayes get discouraged as they turn around.
And a lot of times he just creates a turnover by his mere presence.
There's something in football quarterback pressures with a sack, but he's had probably 15 pressures.
Nice analogies, 50 to 44, 24 left guard.
He seems to be in control.
May is looking for any ray of hope and they're looking for inside and out and they haven't been able to find it another turnover Vardy on the run and he might just pull it up because they don't have the numbers but maybe not for the heat and that might have been millibars at this point because right now you're trying to work against the clock as much as you're trying to work against Mays.
And remember, no shot clock at high school, you can take as much time as one.
Now, I don't like to see a team go into the deep freeze, even with a lead like this, with 4 minutes to go take you out of your offensive rhythm.
But you also might want to run 15, 20 seconds off that clock every chance to get Mays brings it on.
Started getting their assignments the big guy back on that stretch for Jordy Alexandra look what happens all of a sudden Alexander's on the bench and Mitchell goes to the hall guard.
He's going back out 5243 348 left 340 away for his state high school championship for Derby And now they're doing what you said, Herb.
They're pulling it back.
They're working away looking for a good shot.
I'm not sure that was in the rebound comes Mays.
When Marcus Long trying to bring the ball down and try to get something going for Mays and let's see what happens.
Johnson doesn't seem like a very long, long no good around the rim.
That's just about what you have to.
Despite Mays putting aside and Mays has to go for that three almost going to have to get a little lightning in a bottle right now.
Well he had the open looks in and he's a good three point shooter.
Mays just about has to score on every possession and get a stop on every possession.
Look for Al Johnson.
Here he comes right now.
Back in to short, little rest.
I don't blame a lot of 16 guys.
He did.
I promise.
Without this, he sounds like you feel good talking about the 60 seconds.
You feel all right?
Yeah.
Get back in there.
I believe the 67% free throws senior on the year.
It's not falling.
It's not working.
The big time threw down by Johnson and Jordy will wear this clock down 317 left on that clock guarded up by ten was a back looking for the good shot looking for the week and this will wear down a team that's been pressing all day long.
I look for an easy lay up it's going to happen deal.
Johnson moved to the horn back to the foul line for a big guy.
He can shoot some fouls.
Yeah look like he turned his ankle a little bit on that.
But he's going to be all right.
Go walk it off.
Johnson Probably not quite the physical maturity of the kid we saw the other night, Kwami Brown from Brunswick.
But again, a year's difference.
And I'll tell you, Father Brown, I don't see many guys that I think are ready for the NBA coming out of high school still.
But I don't know what his emotional maturity level is or he has certainly got all the tools and got the body to go into the NBA right where been talking about him all day.
I love him as a player.
So it must be something.
Three minute warning to go in the game, 3 minutes slightly up and a seven point game guard he's 53, Mays 42.
The time is running out.
Staying back long, three pointer.
It hasn't been going all night long and the ball is crossing guard his way and he's got to play two on one off the alley is not time to get fancy but he's got Malcolm Watson looks like a goaltender on that one but not to be called.
So here we go.
Maybe a break from his No good That was working overtime going the other way.
Yeah.
You can trap the ball in high school, but the ball looks like it's above the cylinder that time.
And supposedly goaltenders he's got to break first.
Let's see what we've got here to the hoop.
Nice move.
And I really like this guy Matt Mitchell.
I mean, I like his game.
He has a way to get to the hoops and he has a way to find the open man and he's done it all night.
Yeah, but just another tough break.
That ball looked like it might go in.
It fell off and they sure looked to use the three point play right there.
5342 Doherty up to 36 left.
I used to have a coach who said a points worth a million a second worth a lifetime.
He normally said it hurt, but this time during the game when you're down by 11 and the second take away, let me guess, was that the inevitable?
Frank McGuire It was Frank McGuire of South Carolina.
Fortunately for some other guys who were pretty good with that team, we weren't down very often, but occasionally we were.
It was an interesting game, but it still is an interesting game.
A maze is going to have to hit those outside shots, there's no doubt about it.
And they haven't been hitting them all game.
By the way, deadline for entries in the Georgia Natural Gas Blue Scholarship have been extended to April 16th.
Stay tuned during the game for information on nominating a deserving male and female student athlete.
Georgia Natural Gas True Blue Scholarship has been extended to April 16.
Well, here we go.
Final 236 Entertaining games, some talent.
It's been close most of the way, but right now it's 5342.
Mays will try to cut into that, namely Matthew Mitchell.
Pretty good.
Oh my goodness.
Lot of iron comes off of there.
But Mays is going to have to really put the pressure on after this may free throw hopefully one Mitchell as you mentioned, one of those Mays players that can shoot the foul 79% for the year.
I've been good so it's 5443, ten point game.
Things have happened.
Here we go.
Breaking it down in the final minutes of the 20 Boys championship.
Ready?
Come with us.
Johnson has had a sensational game.
Apparently Pass two has really a nice look by the big guy there.
You know, Eric Webster has come off the bench and he's been spectacular on that tip jam.
But he has really gotten a lot of the trash baskets inside and around the hoop.
It has really helped his team make a difference.
This one in going to the basket right here.
I mean, he has a knack for finding his way around the hoop.
The other like that.
You know as well, they can just seem to always find an open there and credit Johnson for delivering the ball to him.
He's the kind of kid you look at the stat sheet afterwards how do you ever get 12 points and five rebounds and five assists?
I hate guys like that.
And you're right, my man.
You picked it up with a slight left.
Alexander Johnson, he doesn't want to come out with 227 left his junior year possible state championship state but he's left in the will and I don't think that's given it's going to take him out maybe with a minute to go or something.
A ten point lead.
It's still not over yet.
First foul shot, no good by Webster.
He'll try again.
One right now.
No wasting your time of getting a shot with the ball in that Mitchell Simmons going to create something bring it down if he doesn't have a shot it out second what he's up second 3340 5443 starting by 11 and that's what we're doing here.
We said we've seen it all night Mitchell trying to wheel and deal and he's got to be frustrated to her position also many times and guys are trying to hit the open shots and this is taking a lot of time off the clock.
When you were down by 11 points inside, what do you know, turnover?
Yeah, man.
Mitchell finally should have fired up to three as soon as he came down.
I think Floyd MAXINE, you just told him that he had to look at the basket when they first came up the floor, and they did it earlier.
And now certainly the time to do it.
And we should sometime soon start seeing some intentional.
We'll see how long that takes.
It's 205 left, 5443 already in control.
Dick Johnson taking it to the hoop, kind of like a shot starter.
And that might be good night, right?
That might have been good night, Hendrix Billy search is over long three quarters of American.
And as we're talking Mitchell hits the three to make it 5646 146 left almost the steal down on the other end to still guard his ball Another quick steal in the three and maybe we do have a ball game I showed you a second quarter time the pressure is on and Alexander's going to try to bring it up and get it back in.
There is an open ball and look who has it to the hole up and maybe foul play on a block as Mitchell takes it to the hoop.
In the last 45 seconds have been some of the most exciting seconds of the entire game.
I'm surprised they're still able to use that basketball.
Well, I mean, Johnson put a hurtin on that basketball if they needed fingerprints I think they're on that basketball here right here going to the line 5646 140 Mitchell with the first of one his first of two and it is good that's what you call putting the hammer down and and look at the time out for Mays they're going to talk it over.
They're going put that press on immediately after this major free throw.
Or if he misses it, they're probably going to.
And as we watched Johnson slowly go to the sideline, that ankle is hurting.
And I'm not sure if that talk.
I mean, he did that well, this was if we missed a shot from Gordon.
Oh, got it all gassed up.
Let's go.
Let's go, hornets.
Well, we're waiting for the international foul to come.
And there's your answer.
As I was mentioning, Johnson looking a little.
He's the guy that took a full court, obviously, and he just saw that sock.
But if he's limping, Herb, I'm not sure I want him breaking the press.
First of all, in 610 to second of all, he's favoring that leg.
So now we know what's going to happen.
MITCHELL To shoot the second, but to make the first one 5647 140 left Mayes down by nine could be eight after this foul shot, 27 points and will stay there.
Johnson with the rebound, Shorty bringing it up, they're going to pull it out.
We'll go to the Hawks.
They gave it a home run.
And what a shot.
Watson Johnson what a big whoop.
11 point Game 128 left Mays looking for the player from way outside.
And there it is.
Mitchell again he has been sensational.
The pressure's on again.
Johnson has the ball again and let's see if they show.
But they don't need to.
But there's a turnover back up for good.
So close still down there.
Up and another foul.
This game will not end.
It is continuing and give me some credit they will not go away for while you're right about that big steal at half court took it away from Johnson couldn't get the first one but they stayed with it on the boards.
They're going to go to the timeout again You got to talk over every possession now know exactly what you want to do.
And lastly, Mitchell missed the second of the free throws, 77% free throw shooter.
But he came down and made it up with a three point play.
There's the drive tangled up.
How many of these rugby games have we seen on the ground Johnson still there and the foul the greatest comeback you ever were involved in in your career high school, college or pros?
What was it?
Because we've got 109 left 5850 Derby up by eight.
What's the best comeback you can remember?
You were involved in or can I tell you, walk away or blown lead?
Maybe you have more of those.
Well, I helped hold Pistol Pete to 58 in Athens one night in a double overtime game, telling the guys when you get to 35.
All right, Let's listen.
You learned about that.
You got a hold of basketball and drama ball.
We got to go back.
Let's go way down there.
Charlie is hoping for some good hands.
Well, that's for the basketball.
Well, he knows that Mays is going to foul.
And he said, you go out there and make the free throws and we got this ball game in the bag.
Now, Mays is going to be shooting, too, so they can cut this to a two possession ballgame.
If they make both these three throws.
Just let us remind you, 109 last quarter, championship 5850 Guard is up, but Mays at the foul line whistling Very good defense Wilkinson the I like the stats sometimes they do 71% during the first three quarters but 52% in the last quarter.
But that one was up and it got the roll.
And let's see what does the second time up up to 58, 50 to 1 on nine, we've got a ballgame.
Mays on the press.
Johnson with the ball and they're going to follow.
That's the down they will foul and a little little disagreement.
Well Johnson was falling out of bounds he didn't want to go out of bounds with the ball.
So he decided see if he can bounce off Michael Williams.
And Michael took a little exception to that, but really not a dirty play or anything.
JOHNSON Just trying to get it out of bounds, call it as well.
Can't get physical, of course.
Said you're going to tackle the foul.
Johnson has been solid from the line today the sound from everywhere today Yeah well we knew the strategy you talk to a coach Floyd Mac your before the ball game.
He told you they were going to try to take it at Alexander Johnson.
That was going to be their strategy.
Didn't do not necessarily a bad strategy.
It just didn't work.
You know you think you watch your kid, you think you know him very well.
They did.
And they were trying to take it, but they were there was a bit of intimidation in there.
Mays has played a terrific game, always has played a gutsy game.
We have an intentional foul call.
But hey, maybe guard he has done what they've had to do.
Another well-coached team.
It's been a good ballgame.
5852 107 left guard.
He is up by six with a chance to add a little more at the foul line.
Well, if that's the strangest intention to foul, it's just like a tendency to shoot shots and then also guarding.
We get the ball out of bounds, which is really going to be things this year.
It was good.
Not as painful as the intentional foul.
I have a feeling coming up.
5952 Johnson will get the second and it goes to 6250 28. ball game base down by eight 1 to 7 left.
I don't know what we had there and they just had a double so it could be a double technical foul is what I'm thinking.
And then a jump ball on center.
It's a double tap jump up and it looks cause they look like they're lining up at center court and have to be a nice to go with possession.
And I'm not sure is the rule that we don't have coverage right now.
But and number two well, that's it.
You talk about pressure shooting.
He's a 77% free throw shooter on the air.
So here we go.
Mays with the ball down by eight, one or seven left and Mitchell will control.
I have a feeling he's going to take it through to something I want to steal the other way.
Marcus Young for the layup.
And it is now a ten point game with less than a minute to go and that was huge.
Hayes needs to shoot the threes.
Good.
Look good.
Maybe a little too late right now there's an additional slot and we heard that snap right there with the intentional foul but the pound of flesh without Keith Wilson score that helps it gone eight now guard he's going to have to do a little faster Well it's already fatal seen it and think they have this one in the can they're on their feet over there and going into the victory celebration and I believe I'm going to have to agree with him, especially as he makes these two games.
This one is good.
6354 Guard.
He looks like they have a state championship with 37 seconds left.
It's been a terrific game on a good ten point game.
They were just trying to throw something up there as quickly as possible, trying to draw down get a three pointer up there off the front rim.
And there's that man, Johnson again.
What's he going to do is try to go for an assist.
Oh, this is is that Marcus Long closes things out 80 seconds to go 6664.
That's just a shot in closing Masters High School Championship a chance to throw a nuts and what a should well how it begins how it ended Stu They've been trying to take it inside all night and Alexander Johnson just won't allow it.
And Thank you.
House that these kids, they got all the way to the state championship game You Hey, it's a cliche, but there's really no losers in something like this because 30 years from now, 20 years now, those kids will look back and should be proud that they played in the state championship.
They didn't get it.
There can only be one winner.
Well, we got to build around the Williams brothers, the six seven.
The junior state shall return going around there.
And who knows, maybe next year the state championship will be yours.
But this day it is Guard's championship and it is.
Alexander Johnson happens to be a junior who is coming back to.
By the way, we should mention that this is the sensational two for me.
Jesse was think playing at the next level somewhere.
I guarantee you that was the whole point of this game turned around.
Was it in that third quarter where they made that one?
Was it they were totally intimidated by guarding him.
Sorry if I had to ask you when it turned it up, was it a play?
Was it a moment?
I don't know if it was a moment, but, you know, they got it to six a little while ago.
It was a two possession game.
And then we had the double technical and then a couple of missed free throws by Matt Mitchell.
And that that was really the thing.
You got the feeling the guard was pretty much in control of his game.
The second half, Mayes made a couple of little moves out of it.
Nothing really.
The sun like.
And so he was in trouble.
GUARD He has jumped Alexander Johnson coming back only a junior Jason Woods who was impressive tonight.
Only two time players, Michael Billings small guy, all of a sophomore.
So they will be heard from again and they were heard from tonight.
These are not for me.
And this should run out the clock.
213 2,001.4 Champion.
Sorry over me.
Sensational basketball game by the tardy Trojans.
They did exactly what they wanted to do.
They got their big guy off in the second half.
They were able to hit a few threes and this that lays defense up and Alexander Johnson with the rest.
Defensively, it's a terrific game.
Managed to take it to him Gardens into the garden team I tell you I'll get your eyes.
I believe there's another team, but there's a lot of talent in Georgia.
But I'll tell you what, there are not a lot of juniors better than Alexander Johnson.
All right, Let's see what the coaches and the players have to say.
Let's go back to our man on the court, Rob.
What's going on over there?
Coach, you got to be breathing a huge sigh of relief.
I know you're getting a little bit concerned there.
Towards the end, Mason's pressure was kind of throwing you off.
You lost a little bit of composure, but somehow you held it together.
How'd you do it?
Well, we we have the down the mountain leadership of our leaders came through score and we got the ball in the hands of the right people.
Well, you got your second Ringo to talk about next year.
Why not?
Who you got coming back?
Well, we got most of our team coming back.
We have five seniors, but the bulk of our team is coming back.
Tell me about the effort.
Amazing.
I know their frustration.
Looks like you were running him out of the gym in the third quarter, but then they came back.
They put pressure on you.
They just couldn't convert, you know, the points off turnovers, tremendous point guard.
That's what it was.
He can play.
And the thing is, if you get a point guard that can penetrate like he does, it's hard to stop.
How does this compare to the one back in 97?
As sweet, as real sweet throughout all verses that we went through this year, we still pull it through.
Well, Coach, congratulations.
Go join the dogpile of happy Trojans.
Let's go back to Stu and now.
All right, Rob, thanks a lot.
Starting your quad, a basketball chance for us.
We'll be right back right after this.
