Live from the Arena, Gwinnett Center.
It's the 2004 GHC four eight Boys Championship between the Butler Bulldogs and the Maize Raiders.
And good afternoon, everybody, and welcome.
I'm Jim Tanaka.
A championship weekend.
It's been some great games so far played here on GPB and we've got a lot more coming your way all weekend long.
The Bulldogs come in at 30 and two, the Raiders come in at 25 and for the two guys called Courtside, Dave Gardner and Bobak.
Hello, guys.
Hey, what's going on there?
Yeah, as you mentioned, the record is very impressive in both 30 and two for the Butler Bulldogs.
Maize, of course, right there with them.
And it's going to be a very athletic game.
We might see the roof come down here tonight.
Well, time to.
What would they do?
Because we're going to have two teams going up and down this floor.
And I'll tell you, Butler is deep and they're physical.
They've got five guys on the roster that play on the football team.
They're coming off that magical victory over Dunwoody.
There's Ricky McGee averaging 16 points.
He's a guard and averaging 6.2 assists and almost three steals.
So, you know, McGee is the guy who makes Butler go and once again, as I said, coming off that big win over previously and beaten Dunwoody, Edwards, Harris, Carter, Curry and McGee the five starters for the Butler Bulldogs again at 30 and two overall and they have certainly had an excellent season and of course I look forward to these guys tonight, very athletic team.
And as you mentioned, you have four players averaging in double figures and of course, talking a little bit about the Mayes Raiders.
I mean, these guys are also very impressive.
And this is one guy right here that could certainly get it done.
Research is that's his shot.
He's a67 junior.
He's their go to guy did not finish the season that strong and was very deliberate with the ball you know in the in the semifinal game he wanted the ball he's averaging 12 points a game almost 11 boards and almost two assists.
So Rashod Chase is now once again regained his momentum and he's on a roll.
Booker, Chase Emerson, Dunson and DeAndre Berry again, the five on the floor for Mayes as the Raiders start out tonight for a state championship.
It's great to toss it down to our P.A.. ANNOUNCER David Witherow for me to be between the Mayes Raiders and the Butler Bulldogs.
Let's meet today's starting lineups first for the Butler Bulldogs.
At guard number 20, Marcus Curry at guard number 23, Ricky McGee at forward number 32, Scott Edwards at center number 34.
Laverne Carter.
And that forward number 40 tie.
Reese Harris, the head coach of The Butler Bulldogs is Robert Johnson.
Oh, and now the starting line up for the Maze Raiders at guard number five, DeAndre Bray at forward number 20 Rashaad safe at guard number 21.
Orlando Dunn, Son at forward number 40.
Calvin Booker And starting at center number 50.
Brandon Emerson Big guys on the floor here tonight the quartet boys game will take a timeout with be right back with the tip off from the arena Gwinnett Center back by Jeep TV is Georgia Public Broadcasting a member of the Georgia Public Broadcasting Family of Services dedicated to providing programs that educate, inform and entertain.

Dave Gardner Bobak with you, Phil Proctor also with us.
Phil, what's going on?
Hey, Dave had a chance to talk to both coaches before the game.
They both said they got to get great guard play today, but more importantly, watch out for the Windex, man.
These guys inside to be on the boards.
I'll tell you what, I'm looking forward to the exciting play on the inside.
Thank you, Dave.
All right.
Sounds good.
Of course, two very athletic teams here, as we've talked about, as we get set for quite a boys action.
And if this game is anything like the quarter girls game, we're in for a treat.
Yeah, without a doubt.
This is going to be up and down action.
By the way, three of the highest rated referees in the country for the state.
Quite a championship.
Final three just young Mark Pound for Willie Crosby working the game.
The team right there as we get set to jump at midcourt at ball out of bounds watch out there.
Bo thought I was going to have to leave my feet that nearly, nearly got the best over there.
But we will re jump there at center court again, that is number 40.
Calvin Booker of Mary's rather number 50.
Brandon Everson.
He jumps and Mays will control the toss and they've got the ball back with you got a boys action underway here from the arena Edwin at center.
Glad you could join us Championship weekend on GPB with Butler Square the senior lady and they've got their very physical start out in a zone against Mays DeAndre Gray with the ball winning the point for me very very quick and we're trying to chase that we're focused on there in the beginning number 20 certainly got to watch out for as well George got inside there shot from outside three point shot for Calvin Booker, the sixth for senior forward.
That was a good looking shot.
And they were very, very patient against that zone.
Gray did a nice job of running the offense, man Edwards with the basketball number three two, back up top to the point guard that is Ricky McGee, number 23.
The other guy to be focused on their fault that it knocked away Gray fakes the pocket he's on the other end off and running them out and then a draw foul out there and boy is he quick alive.
Flash of lightning right there.
D'Andre Brett, only five with six kills.
He's a junior but back next year only average run around six points.
But he's really the fortunate boy you can see that just after the first offensive and defensive sequence again at the line five straight years of the state tournament for the Butler Bulldogs.
Great hits right there.
And meanwhile, Mays, 14 consecutive wins coming into the championship.
Yeah, they have.
And they're still playing for the first state title.
Actually, it's the second consecutive year that the Mays team is playing for the state title, right?
This year they win in women's basketball and that has kind of motivated this boys team here a little bit too of course, knowing that the girls won it last year, those girls came out of nowhere there.
And Mays hoping to do the same thing here, although these guys are really coming out of nowhere, 25 and four coming in here, they're going to sneak up on anybody.
They just that's Ricky McGee on the line.
And you saw that.
That is going to be a tough matchup for De'Andre.
Brain.
McGee was able to turn the corner and get to the front of the rim pretty easily goes the game six feet three by six, averaging over 16 points a game in the game with a free throw there.
But I'm sure Brey is used to a lot of mismatch there.
You look at McGee's numbers again 16 point threes got some rebounds, 6.2 assists and got around close to three steals.
And that's a pair right?
There we go.
Full court pressure from Butler for two Mays up early.
They've got the basketball quickly get it across from outside again that's Calvin Booker can't quite get the shot to go there Rebound Bulldogs and oh hi there maybe looking for that alley oop pass to two although a little showtime here tonight perhaps not the way to see it as a shot from outside off the mark there but the follow go teams battling on the boards Lyric and Edwards have that shot from outside his six foot seven and shoot the ball from three point range battle it down low in that one got away with this Mays playing out of reach at 540 out of Atlanta Butler out of the Augusta area out of region three going at it 30 and two coming into the state championship.
Unbelievable.
McGee again on the drive had it knocked away and knocked away by Eduardo Dunson, as film has shown a lot of quickness so far there and man to man Marcus Curry in the line up shot got it to go Wow, what a job by curry First time we've mentioned Marcus Curry.
He's averaged nine points a game this year the six two senior score good pass on the other hand up and in from his shot That's the way to beat that zone He will penetrate and pick 540 to go here opening quarter then they've got to go back with the feel Procter Gamble baseline with us What a boys action state championship weekend GPB a little put back right there.
Oh no man.
Tough break right there for Tyrese Harris and it looks like a foul is going to be called and coach Rob Johnson not going to like it.
That's all right there.
You want to travel Going to get it, though.
Rob Johnson, 13 years at Butler, had a feeling that when he saw Dunwoody, a lot of teams were scared of Dunwoody because they've been so dominant there in the league, undefeated going into that semifinal game.
But he thought when he saw them that they were pretty evenly matched.
He kept the hotel reservations for another night.
Everson Unable to get the ball to go down there.
Butler comes out of there with it.
Yes, Chris, The Bulldogs coming off that big win last night, 6664 over number one.
Dunwoody, who as you mentioned, 28 no coming into that game.
Great Look back on the other end.
Calvin Booker, five points very quickly here for Mr. Booker it's for senior good looking athlete from on the other end wouldn't go long on that pass their little pull up jumper off the glass Satish follows his own shot in and out of there Ball still up for grabs.
Mayes keeps it alive.
Three opportunities still won't go and it is going to be Butler.
Basketball remains active on the glass half shot chase up there.
Both teams very active.
First base beating Stone Mountain for the region title and Region five.
Butler, of course, with four players averaging double figures.
They brought the offense this year averaging 73 points a game offensively.
That's something else, especially for a high school basketball.
Three point shot outside, no good little bit back there.
Fires kept alive.
Now another long pass two on one and picked away but still good defense.
But that was Marcus Curry who desperation put his foot out there John.
Great great.
A little point guard for Mayes is very, very impressive.
And his ability to know where everybody is to look ahead right away as soon as he gets the yes, as soon as he gets the ball, he's looking down for caution there.
The step from Owen, they'll repeat and a lot of plays and McGee pushing on.
Oh, see that's what again a great will do.
It will absolutely make you nuts.
You'll feel sometimes like you're so pesky inside your shorts and like that Muggsy bolts, you know, he's that little guy that just makes his way through that.
Only he just frustrates the bigger guys.
A whistle prior to the basket and finally to the court on Butler and play over the court 21 star Chase will come out of the lineup right here take a look down at some of the size of these guys here.
I mean for Butler you know six foot four, six, seven, six, five, six, four is pretty much the starting lineup.
MAYS They've got six, seven.
And of course, Brandon Everson, the big center out around six six as well on the college team out there.
Both of these teams in play very much under control.
They know what they what they can do, what they want to do.
Good pass right there.
Allow it.
Sometimes you see a state championship final where it's just it's a selective tactic.
These guys are not running their offense.
Both of these teams are probably going to call on Booker.
Booker slid his foot trying to take a peek inside perhaps make the improvement at last bucket by LeVert Carter the assist by senior center for Butler and some player substitutions here number 21 Orlando Duncan back in the ball game just checked out a moment ago and the 20 responses quickly step it back inside not a long breather at all as a break It's a break.
325 to go here.
Opening quarter high school basketball on GPB State championships Quarter Boys, The Butler Bulldogs and the Maze Raiders in and out of there for McGee.
He's been the man for Butler throughout these playoffs.
Paul He's picked up by the Bulldogs and McGee will drive it on in here and knocked away and he sees nothing there that time.
He should have pulled it out.
He scores forcing the access was talking about being hectic Now all of a sudden Butler is getting a little hectic in the guy running the show is really got to control tempo two point lead for me but that was be with the basketball looking inside what a pass up and into Brandon Everson Everson averaging over 11 points a game this year A big bucket right there he started at center over Desmond Williams for maze Bulldogs back on the attack here the other way Oh nice backdoor either had it knocked away though foul would go block Finally underneath Tyrese Harris kept it alive and scored.
Tyrese Harris is that big football player division one football prospect really aggressive had 24 points against Baldwin and pretty much the leading rebounder on this team as well But pull up jumper there and the tip is there.
The follow from Jason has four points for success here in the early going, 2 minutes left in the quarter, four point lead for the Raiders and Mays averaging right around 63 points a game on offense left hander wouldn't go.
What a great move though.
Oh oh, that one got away right there in front of us there.
A little miscommunication.
It seems the ball's going to throw the way there, give all these difficult experience, a little bit of pre-game jitters, I'm sure.
And of course, both teams, much like the girls game before this, coming off of a semifinal.
No game last night here, although it didn't seem to bother the girls too much.
I mean, they seemed like they just had that adrenaline build.
As you mentioned, there's the field goal scorer through three of seven for Butler, four of nine from eight back on the other, a three point shot off the block would go rebound Desmond Williams Brey head to face pulls up a little runner wouldn't go and McGee with it on the other end Look at inside are too tall trying to find Harris for the 34 LeVert Carter was wanting a basketball though to see Brey coming back the other way and that last sequence he just made that diagonal pass off the left hand just great stuff and the one minute mark here very aggressive on the boards are the Butler Bulldogs and that has been one of their key elements to their success this year.
They were eliminated by Baldwin last year in the state tournament, lost to Statesboro in the three quarter championship this season, and that really helped Butler refocus coming into the coming into the state tournament.
And it looks like Mayes is very content just to run the clock here in Butler laying off.
We haven't seen the Four Corners in 24 years.
We're seeing it 35 seconds left.
And I guess it's safe to say the Raiders are playing for the final shot here.
Boom, All surprise at the end of the first quarter, especially Mayes has been so prolific scoring wise.
Well, you know, the fact that you've got a four point lead girls game ran a little long.
They're just trying to keep us on track here, trying to keep us on our TV schedule.
Coach Floyd Mac devised the strategy to look at clock run.
Their three point shot from outside.
Won't go for Booker Butler quickly back on the other end Ball loose there shot from outside it won't go the tip is there at the buzzer and it sounds his ill advised strategy.
If you're going to do that, then you have to make sure you take the final shot.
Not only did they leave enough time for Butler, but it was a goal to come full court and get a tip besides.
Well, Tim Mayes.
We'll be right back with quarter number two right after this.

This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station, Dave Gardner.
Bobak, back with you here.
Quartet boys, action.
Let's hear it out of Phil Proctor.
Fill it up.
Hey, Dave, real quick, I talked to Troy Mack earlier.
He said the team that wins on the board could probably win the game.
Well, check this out.
Devin Williams, Brandon Emerson and Rashod Chase all averaged over 300 rebounds for the season.
I would say that's playing in the boards.
I'd say so.
And both these teams have really been big on the boards this year.
We talked about that's attributed to their success and being able to get here.
You got to have success inside like that, especially at this level.
So Turner out there wouldn't go from Harris.
The fireworks over Carter with the bucket, but they got quarter number two action inside and the foul count Great look inside and it's Brandon Emmerson with the bucket we're seeing right here.
Great look inside is able to cover himself very physical Emmerson again at the line as you see his numbers over 11 points this year and over 11 rebounds and a bunch of blocks as we talked about the backup way now two point game right now Baze up by a bucket Butler can tie it right here Amazing man to man the have been throughout the game so far throughout the first quarter now into the second curry gives up to McGee McGee pulls the trigger from outside it wouldn't go the hurt Kreider trying to keep it alive follow from Tyrese Harris would go ball loose and all this is going to be called and I believe they're going to get Calvin Booker the foul.
Perhaps.
Coach Rob Johnson 13 years Lloyd Mac senior the coach for Mays in his 10th season.
So these guys they've got some they got some ten year couple of veteran coaches.
Yeah no doubt about it I think maybe that's why we've seen both of these teams play with such poise.
This up for Butler you really have to hand it to him coming off that Dunwoody undefeated and enjoying wilderness the great player for the right big character win Laverne Carter just did a great job on him holding him to only 16 in that game.
It's a back out break over to Booker now looking inside to chase with the ball.
Six foot seven Chase man, he's got to find he broke out with 24 a game 24 points in that win over Carroll in the semifinal six and a half to play here.
First half tied up 14 Oh, there's a shot.
A little high Archie shot right there.
Wouldn't go for Emerson Brandon Emerson, really off the bench a couple of times this year has been big.
That's inside they're taking it to the hole wouldn't go to follow would go well that's a missed opportunity for Butler because they caught Mayes napping.
He's a team really able to take advantage of some easy looks here in this first half and a whistle and about because they're with Butler 1966 dates in 38 years and they're looking to get back into that category as you get another look at that last foul there.
Yeah of course play there but of course watch them jump ball throw all their but nonetheless, Orlando Johnson will be at the line of a 2136 one junior as you see his numbers got at four points a game, 2.4 rebounds.
They're the five yard substitution now.
Slide number 35, Antoine Kearse, six three Junior, making his first appearance of the lineup here tonight.
Johnson on the second hit So Orlando that's had one of two on that trip now full court pressure from Mays that's McGee with the ball too great to make them nutty Mr. up by a pointer 1545 50 to go in the first half off the mark their second and third opportunities and LeVert Trier finally gets one to go there for the Bulldogs It filled Proctor Oh he was talking about the Masry rebounding proficiency and you see coach there right now Jokic Floyd Macs as you guys do the stuff getting on the rack with Floyd Mac the head coach for the Raiders calling that last time out Well Jordan Republic Broadcasting has made it easier than ever to show your support for great local programs like our coverage of the GHC basketball championships.

It's totally secure.
Simple to use and takes just 2 minutes.
And thank you once again for your support of Georgia Public Broadcasting.
So after the time out there Butler again 5.16 15 but Mayes with the basketball Jim Mayes girls winning the state championship last year, the boys try to follow their footsteps here tonight, playing a very talented Butler team who comes in ranked second in the state.
Mayes hasn't been able to feed the post.
There it is right there.
But they've had difficulty doing that and that's where the size is.
And that's great.
Find a pass, good ball movement right now from the Raiders and right back in the hands of Ray Emerson.
It's a tough shot with Blanco.
They get it out of there on the run the other way.
That's Kirk from outside.
I wouldn't go Johnson with it.
Players hitting the floor out there.
Whoa.
What was wow, What was that Rucker Lee to do?
I went the other way.
You flew over Carter and the foul low Big Bo with an exclamation point right in your linear right here with Addison McGee Defender Hurt Carter is on a great string of games and that's the end the game winner against Dunwoody and also did a great job against him one wilderness That's what we've been waiting for right there.
A little outside chance for a three point play right here from five who as you mentioned, Bo.
Yeah.
Hit the game winner last night And you can look at his season numbers, of course, over ten points a game.
Look at his field goal percentage.
That's pretty good on the six, six and ten.
Wow.
Well, he's converting like that.
You can see why it's so hot.
Yeah, this is on the free throw.
But nonetheless, he's got the crowd into it for the Raiders back the other way here.
Three point lead he's trying to tie back up and counter on the other end four and a half to play here in this first half save Gardner Bobak with you Phil Proctor and courtside no good Fred Johnson Butler on the other end looking inside there.
Oh, what a play Inside Good Mood by Tyree Harris, the big man for that alley oop.
Got him going.
They're feeling good about themselves.
They're a little bit frantic before, but I think Butler now has a feeling what they want to do offensively.
And Desmond Williams missing on that last shot came back out with the steal Antoine Curry on the other end and a big time foul right there.
His body has hit the floor and now, man, you're fired up after that one.
And boy, little Johnny going on.
But they went down hard with no doubt about that one.
That was a midair collision with us.
Here comes right here.
Wow.
It's you know, that's really that's going after.
But you know what?
You play in this state championship game and you don't want him to get the ball to the women.
Here you go first course not of roster contact there or something but rattled my boy five point lead for the Bulldogs and three things that lead right there to six and outrageous and substitutions Gray will check back in also looks like number 50 Emerson in there as well and number 15 of the lineup tonight as well and that is Jonathan Murray first time and a lot of pride for Murray the six foot cedar second free throw off the mark from third base trying to pick up here a little bit in this first half.
And once again, Mayes now slows down the pace it here.
It's not like there's a minute left, though.
There's still three and a half minutes left here in this half page out of Dean Smith's book, No Shot Clock and High School basketball.
So no sense of urgency right now.
They're set up right now where they could run a UCLA offensive.
The Princeton offense is really predicated on backdoor cuts, but kind of look a little bit like UCLA there.
The beautiful.
Yeah, they do proud fired up the golden crowd on their feet here making the trip over from Augusta for Mayes down by six.
So I'm trying to think and coach the strategy.
Maybe he's trying to conserve energy.
Maybe he thinks they don't have an answer playing just 24 hours ago.
So there it is.
That's the strategy for Orlando Dotson with the bucket.
Take it off the wing, off on the put it on the floor and score.
Now full court pressure on Fred Johnson dribbling and field goals eight of 12 for Butler seven of ten for Mayes.
Yeah it's great to find out those low they're kind of low turnover and the ball right back to the Raiders if you know what the other thing is that you can see when Butler came down there a little bit anxious then and maybe you know this is the stalling tactic is is taking them out of their rhythm and maybe just getting them a little bit antsy might be able to work on their last as frustrations.
And, you know, they're just coming for the turnovers.
They're seven three.
We got Phil Proctor.
There's Coach Mac at halftime.
He's ready setting it up once again.
Dre with the ball here.
And as you can see, the clock under the two minute mark.
Now here in the second quarter.
Now the mayor's office will go to work, try to feed it inside there and a little turnaround along that baseline wouldn't go for Chase.
It looks like a jump off possession error will stay with Mays Chase good looking specimen where he looks like a basketball player.
There's me.
Yeah, there is.
He's posting up Mays, of course, with a semifinal victory over Crowe 5143 Chase with 24 points in that ballgame last night and a dozen.
And that was his breakout game off the glass.
Pretty shot right here from Brandon.
Everything.
And so Mays climbing back in it, that's basically just a one possession game again.
And from outside here, the shot Harris Brandon Harris that good looking jumper took his time squared up go left handed pass right there off the glass it wouldn't go for Anderson taken down by Johnson under a minute, Curry pulls up for the jumper.
No good rebound ever since his six foot six, six, seven or so.
He's got some nice inside their 40 seconds left 2419 once again, spread the floor, let the clock run here.
A different offensive set now than the previous two stalls.
See where they go from here playing for the last shot under 10 seconds now and Ray will run the offense crossover move inside there.
Face kicks it outside to Benson won't go and out is going to do it for the first half 2419 Butler with a five point lead over Mays as the teams head on into the locker room up and down the floor.
Neither team really lighting it up too much, but you can bet that things are going to change in that second half.
Let's go Phil Proctor, He's standing by with Coach Rob Johnson.
Okay, Coach Johnson, they put the stall technique on you, man.
What are you going to do with that?
Well, when Only reason I let him do that.
Stay back is because we know we had to start with two fouls.
We were playing pretty well pass themselves and we were going to try to make it to the half.
And that's what happened.
All right.
You're making any adjustments in the second half?
You won't come out with the game plan.
We will come out and just contain our rebounding and running the ball.
That's our game.
They try to slow us down.
We've got to try to do something, not to do not let them slow us down, but we're going to come out trying to rebound better, make our easy shots.
We finally got our legs there in the second quarter, came back, played pretty well.
Good luck in the second half.
Go bring it back to you.
All right.

All right, Jimmy, I'm over here with the doctor's.
Good, Doc, The doctor, Walter Reed for both the high school and Dr. Tom Smith.
Amazing.
Dr. Smith, we'll start with you.
First of all, congratulations getting here and enjoying the game.
Right?
We're really enjoying it.
We a little bit behind right now.
But I believe if we work hard and continue at it, we probably can pull this one out.
Okay, Maze, there's a lot of good academic programs over there to school them and tell us a little bit about them.
But Maze is the math and science magnet for the Atlanta school system.
We also are interested in implementing small learning communities starting next year so that we will have something for every child within that building.
But the Math and Science Academy is the big draw and has a high number of really qualified students in attendance and they're going all over the country.
People are recruiting them everywhere.
So we're working hard to keep that integrity and that legacy alive.
So tell me, what's it been like around school with the championship state championships, if it's been an interesting week this week, it has been filled with excitement and it makes it worse that we had mid semester exams going on this week also.
So we still focus on the academics, but this is the icing on the cake for us where you got the, you know, the girls last year winning it.
The boys have a possibility of doing it.
You guys have won it in track and field.
It'd be nice to have three championship good.
It would be nice to have that trophy to that trophy case and we're looking forward to it.
But we still have a long way to go and Butler's an excellent team.
Hats off to them.
But we're still going working until the very end and may the best team win tonight.
Well, I appreciate.
Then I'm gonna swing it on over here to Dr. Reed.
Doug, tell us a little bit about that Butler school.
How are you doing now?
Butler Stevenston 1960.
And we serve up south part of Richmond County and Augusta, Georgia.
And we're a comprehensive high school.
We have all the academic programs as long as along with the technical career education programs.
And we really, really encourage our students to go for the dual seal track and and focus on academics and try to pursue that technical career education program as well.
So how's the community been?
I mean, you guys coming out here is the first opportunity for a state championship.
I know.
Sorry, we had a our last time was 1966, so we're glad to be back down.
Here we are with we're long overdue and we've tried hard, made it through the first round several years.
And but this year we're here and it's my first year of press here in Butler High School.
So it's very exciting for me.
And it's like a Dr. Smith says the icing on the cake academics is our top priority.
But this is one thing I really focusing on is trying to build a core teamwork and a team spirit and a and a community and a school.
And it's the sports programs as best helps tile that together and give us some focus too.
And we brought a couple of our students at our school busses today.
I've got my superintendent in the stands, I've got the parents, teachers.
So we've really got a lot of support here with the school board members up there.
So we're real proud of of them coming out, supporting us.
Well, I tell you what, I want to just say to both you guys made the best team win.
Jim, I tell you what, I'm not exactly sure which way I should go, but I know I got two doctors on my side.
I should be okay.
Back to you.
That's always a safe way to go.
Phil All right.
Always good to hear from the principals.
All right, let's go courtside now.
Dave Gardner and Bobak.
Hey, guys.
All right.
Hey, Jim.
As you know, take a look back at that first half here, Bo, very much up and down the floor.
Either team really lining it up, though, as we talked about just 24 to 19.
Let's take a look back and see some of the highlights from the first half.
Well, here you see the ball.
One of the few times they were able to feed the post, get it inside.
They have mostly been restricted to the perimeter.
Then they take it off the dribble and are able to get inside.
And they were very active on the glass and that's what they're known for.
But Butler, on the other hand, they also were a little more frantic when they were here.
You see the alley oop was lit them up and gave them the sense of momentum and it had them going.
Of course, the first half stats, as you see again, the score 2419 11 of 14 field goals, though Butler actually shooting the basketball pretty well.
Of course you skip on down there a little bit you know 64% field goal percentage to 58.
Not bad.
Both teams shooting the ball, but still some turnovers in there, particularly for Butler.
They want to cut down on that.
Again, not a lot at the line here, but that'll probably change, too, as this thing gets aggressive.
Well, that's it as we get set for second half action from the arena at Gwinnett Center, the Butler Bulldogs and Mayes Raiders going at it in the quarter a boys contest.

Also with us.
What's going on, Phil?
Okay, I'll be with coach, man.
Coach, what was the conversation like in the locker room?
Well, what we talked about, about the interior defense, what we talked about earlier, we are getting people on the boards and we are not stepping in and pitching out and helping them recover.
And we are getting killed.
The guard is making too much penetration of guys getting victories off the dribble.
We just got to rebound the basketball.
Okay, Coach, good luck to you in the second half.
Thank.
Well, you heard the coach, of course, rebound certainly key there.
And that's one thing that we alluded to in that first half, but that would be key coming into this game.
Yeah.
And you know Butler you expect it from Mays has got to do a better job.
Mays has been a great rebounding team now particularly in this game is going to remember that Butler is a senior laden team.
They're deep, they're physical.
We talked about it earlier in the game, five guys on the roster on the football team.
So you can imagine they're used to bouncing people around inside.
Coach Floyd Mac 173 wins, Coach Rob with over 225 or so wins at Butler.
Just unbelievable.
The coaching resumes on these guys.
They've been around a long time.
Butler opens up the second half with the basketball and a five point lead.
Ricky McGee puts up a shot.
Wouldn't quite go there.
Harris Trying to keep it alive does so can't get the shot that will go the line there again Tyreese Harris the other big guy guys we talk about six foot four junior Division one football prospect said Brendan Emerson was there for Mays, but Butler was able to come up with the rebound and almost the putback and that's what Coach Mack was talking about.
HARRIS 13 and a half point average on the season, 58% from the floor and it's just that's unbelievable because he does a lot of it inside there but still puts Ron Johnson over there on the Bulldog bench puts it on.
There's another rebound, the second one there, Edwards lost the handle on it and the ball goes over to Mays.
Coach Johnson not happy with the last sequence there, but follows up man to man Johnson with the basketball number 21 to JR.
Into the corner now and back out to DeAndre break five six Junior bears the post up and that's what they're talking about feel Butler being physical you can see it they're not really able to post up inside they can't get this spot on the floor and come back with the ball.
They're going to back out.
Calvin Booker takes it up.
Little runner off the glass Good tough Got running one handed up four senior forward So this was shot right here three point game again too little pass knocked away there Curry kept alive pulls up takes a shot himself a won't go ball still loose and knocked around Curry back with it takes another shot it won't go this time Chase clears it out of there They've got to start finding chase down low inside there and a foul going to be called on Butler going to be on Harris great look by Dre the point guard throwing that ball over the top when he realized his man had his defender pinned 635 player in the third quarter.
Again Brey will inbound it Mayes lost the 32,001 final so two years later the Raiders right back here again vying for another state championship Butler and in zone in the changing defenses Johnson's left side hits that little baseline there just about five points Orlando Johnson six one junior that's the toughest shot in the game the mid-range baseline jumper one point game Butler 24 Mayes 23 Bulldog Basketball Chance Widen the Gap thing stayed close to rounds, but a good game could be 20.
You know talk about either team really lining it up in that first half but he shot the ball well just as shooting.
Yeah.
You know, McGee, when you look at him against Gray, we we're talking about how pesky Brey is from these final point.
McGee has been Butler's guy, But when he turns the corner, his game being a long Strider, he's able to get to you by some space against Gray.
But they spread the floor and he can get wherever he wants.
So nice pass right there.
Good looking.
No, look, this.
They're just in traffic.
We're also looking at this for the shot.
This is good Chase pulls it down to shot Chase ahead.
Now quickly back on the other end.
That's our everything.
Oh good Kept alive and it push underneath Washington very aggressive on the boards as we talk about rebounding put back point to something that's certainly going to be key Butler has relied on that this year that's been part of the reason see they tried to feed chase there and now I'm very good at that making the Andrew Pass George Floyd Mac senior on the bench right there so Butler back the other way takes it all the way.
Coast to coast wouldn't quite go for curry the game to lose another opportunity and it wouldn't go and that was going to be waived off foul on the floor.
All right Looks like it's going to be on the shot chase There is right there.
Coach Mark, or rather, Mark, how's the referee making that call now on Chase there?
Five and a half.
Oh, nice pass inside.
Lays it up defender in his face.
Can't get it to go but clever Carter is there for the bucket and the foul got Butler Butler doesn't have any to mess around the best but he can tell the football team as it were up in the air that strong the physical they just keep putting it up there It's like five motions below and you know throw it up on one side.
It doesn't go go to the other side, get it, throw it up again, go to the other side, get it.
And that's the way they're just relentless on the boards.
Eight point boards kept it alive once again.
Good pass right there.
If they call out Good bounce pass, that's a lost art Couple the hands of McGee and then take it away.
Good hands right there by Mays Desmond Williams telegraph that 165 senior so gray back on the other end gives it up 5 minutes left here in the third quarter 2723 Butler on top yes Allen swings it out there but a pull up one hander all go but Chase keeps it alive for the Raiders.
Yeah that was Chase They just throw it up the end and seen too much ball Get big get one There it is He plays it.
I try to get it in there.
Good, good.
Get that shot.
You got to hit those.
Got to hit.
Those are wide open.
Looks like that.
Yeah, absolutely.
Point blank.
That's what they're talking about.
The two games before the Cairo win, he was lackluster play like that.
He was giving down when people in school was talking about and he was getting down himself.
Then it breaks out for 24 against Carroll.
Now he seems to be back in that malaise again.
The big efforts from the Raiders throughout the playoffs.
Emerson had 18 against Woodland in round two, off the fingertips there momentarily.
Inside, no fouls for Mayes, beating Stone Mountain in round three 5547, this match that led to a red zone miscues as they carried them with Butler Butler, of course, beating Dougherty in the round to their 6350 shot 47% from the floor there.
And of course, in round three, Butler, of course, beat Baldwin avenging last avenging a regular season loss this year, but also last year, state tournament loss, 6758.
The storm in it's a great defensive effort by chase step on take the cutter Booker shot from outside go follows his own shot lays it up and in Nice job right there Calvin Booker the sixth for senior forward no turnover very well set up that 2725 Butler I've got a feeling I'm going to triple overtime I'll tell you what I thought that girl's game was going to go to overtime.
Their BREY nearly had a steal right there traveling going to be called on McGee and he knew it and it's going to be called by Butler right here again Coach Rob Johnson talked it over the Bulldogs coming off that win last night against number one Dunwoody 28.
No coming into that game finished at least 28 to 1 Will Dunwoody but again Butler for the state championship.

The host there does an excellent job with that with that show there.
He's been there for you personally, one of my favorites.
We certainly don't hate on this in all the huddles there a little bit it's some talk there it coach of the Raiders he was amazing hasn't mentioned 14 game winning streak coming in here dating back into the regular season.
Yeah I'll tell you what they have really dominated all the way through There was Butler as you mentioned the number two team in the state with that upset last night.
So both teams really riding some momentum.
Oh nice pass blocking foul, Couldn't get the shot to go there trying to capitalize.
There was one shot chase.
Oh, they ran a cutter on the baseline and the screener went with him and Chase was able to uncover and Bray found he's got a quick trigger just off the dribble.
He does with it with the fast break shot chase 12 points, 49% from the floor over ten rebounds a game with a score through on three three with a play substitute for him.
You get a look at last foul and that ball just wouldn't point that out.
It seems like there's been a lid on both ends of the basket at times tonight.
Both teams unable to finish first.
Free throw hits from 2726.
Butler with a one point lead still and the basketball maze right there with a though 3 minutes left in the third quarter Dave Gardner Bobak with the Phil Proctor also with us and a shot from outside three point shot wouldn't go from Curry and rebound That's one of the few times tonight where Butler's only had one chance back on the other end and a blocking foul and down it.
Wow a foul on curry Here comes right now you're going to see Marcus Curry doesn't really establish himself see that does really his sliding you got to go there you got to get in front of his path and you've got to plant yourself.
That was a good call for mon Mickey.
I'll repeat his numbers on the season.
He's at the line.
This is on the front end of the one and one there though, so no points for Baze on that possession.
Unable to tie the game there.
Butler with the basketball There's a nice back court inside right down the lane Couldn't quite get the bucket but there's another to draw the foul there they there's another one where guys unable to finish it looks like Doc Rivers in his first two years of the Hawks he could get anywhere he wanted around the rim and couldn't finish.
And then, of course, became an all star through 28 to play in this third quarter time.
Winding down here a little bit and free throws shot there from Marcus Curry and Bulldogs looking for their first state championship since 1966.
Marcus Curry 12 points and knocks it down right there.
So 2928 Butler back up five pointer near the two minute mark of the third quarter Again the arena at Gwinnett Center good finish high school basketball very excited Not a good idea to throw it inside into traffic You took that sidestep you might as well have taking the shot quick An alley oop right there wouldn't go but somehow or another the Bulldogs get the ball back and score her with the bucket shot from outside.
Three point shot for Calvin Booker and then maybe that will open it up for them or at least get them going on the perimeter because Butler playing zone against the Nets thinking they can shoot outside if he thought about an outside three point shot.
For Edwards, that's an answer.
That's a very dramatic answer right there.
Edwards is, as you mentioned, six foot seven, got some highs, but he's not afraid to pull that trigger from outside.
Take that break outside.
It wouldn't go rebound.
Bulldogs, Carter and the whistle a foul on the Raiders and that'll make coach Mack crazy in the open floor like that You've got no rate going after small man pitfalls to chase the floor coach there is to keep these teams fired up here crowd's been a little solid pretty good numbers here but I think they're just kind of hanging on waiting to see what happens with this horse.
This has been a very even tempered game and, you know, each team has been answering other baskets.
I think the fourth quarter this game is I would just really be a breakout crazy mayhem affair, the exotic curry miss.
And on the second one, he brings it down nearing the one minute mark 3531 butler up by four Gower Galaxy to Johnson from outside it wouldn't go Edwards down with it and Curry will bring it across.
Now this is off under a minute here.
Oh nice little spin move Got it inside LeVert with the turnaround wouldn't go ball loose and finally covered up by Everson Great rebound by Everson that's going up He's getting this being strong knowing you need a board at that point the foul going to be called on the Bulldogs though it's going to be called on every four back the other way now final seconds, 35 seconds on the clock and Mayes again playing that slow down tempo here.
Yeah well Coach Johnson said at the half told Phil Proctor that the reason Camacho's because a couple of guys with the two fouls I think now's the time maybe where you might want to come after him except that you've got a four point lead as well right now.
Just don't want to lose anything.
Chief Brey takes it out.
Three point shot from way out there.
Booker No good off the back of the iron ball loose.
Look ahead.
Final second there and it's definitely going to get the shot down.
Oh, man.
Diving all over the floor there.
Somebody just got to stop the Falcons 3531 Butler up by four.
As we go to the fourth quarter play, we'll be right back.

Phil Procter is standing by.
Okay, Dave, I've got two quick things here to look out for.
The play between Rickey McGee, Butler and Mays De'Andre Break and also the conditioning of both these clubs they played last night.
We'll see who's got legs left at the end.
Tell you this.
They talked as we talked about back in that girl's game.
We thought that might be a factor.
And we'll have to see what happens here with the boys.
But they've kind of slowed it down a little bit.
They should have some pretty fresh legs.
Yeah, I think so.
This hasn't been the best tempo game.
Both teams played a lot of zone.
Calvin Booker outside three point shot wouldn't go, but Johnson kept it alive and now Booker again puts up a shot, rattles in and out of there.
Ball still loose Emmerson with the basketball will draw the foul there 3531 Butler up by four Booker put up that teardrop type of shot he didn't need to He could have squared himself and and taken a J but they're on the line.
You've got to look at Brandon Emerson gets the shooter's roll there on the first one in five points today four rebounds and this is on the second one there.
So one of two on that trip, a one possession game.
Bo Butler with the basketball it knocked away great run of the floor on the other end Lays it up tough shot wooden fly go trying to get a little tip in there analysts are going to be calling the foul going to be good with this guy on the floor is able to get to the rim amongst all those giant redwoods.
Yeah he's so he's quick.
He tries to outrun them.
Right.
He was one on three, was one on three and then became three following one.
Yeah, exactly.
They were sitting right back at the line.
Now and it's again, look at number 22 Ramone McHale was be a junior guard back in the lineup for the Mesa Raiders and this is six foot seven and hits and this is two for two on that trip Full court pressure now from Mayes 3530 41. game with 715 to go to decide the Florida boys championship in 2004 Tough shot.
Oh, man.
Good looking play right there.
McGee's been able to do that every time against Bray.
Bray harasses him, but when he gets the leverage on him is able to drop the total and turn the corner, he's able to leave them.
Oh, man, that was that was the boy that Mayes is looking for.
And as you said, they've really not being able to finish converting those chippies.
Right.
Right now we're seeing some wide open looks today and very easy and able to capitalize.
Yeah, it's kind of a low scoring game, 3734 here, but still a close game and that's what counts with Mac Senior.
Again in his 10th season at the helm for the Babe Mesa Raiders at number 32, Desmond Williams, the six five center will check back in.
As you look at Harris, his numbers, four points, seven rebounds as the force the leading rebounder misses on the front end of the one and one and traveling going to be called though on the Bulldogs.
It'll go back the other way they're courageous young the official making that call excellent call for 650 now Brey brings it up and there's the fact talking about the officials they've been just about invisible in this game, doing what was an indicator that they're doing a great job.
Exactly exactly Turnover story Butler ten Mayes with five here and that has allowed Mays to stay in this ballgame twice as many fouls from outside three point shot would go the same there and they're going to get the time out of his play right there from a galaxy right along.
That baseline trying to save it could throw it back.
Anybody got the time out to go with three making a great call in the air and officials responding knowing he got the team to begin with and coach Rob Johnson right there talking to his troops only up three all of the basketball championships can also be viewed live on the GPB internet site at WW w dot GB dot org.

Three point shot from outside once again just wouldn't quite go.
And there is a lid on that basket here to that both teams really shooting the ball well in that first half from outside of McGee three point shot wouldn't go here the shooting percentages were surprising to me.
Yeah.
Quietly as good as they were.
Oh, nice little floater there from Calvin Booker.
And Booker's having a big game.
He's certainly not going through his six four forward singing hip hop nays.
There's no foul out there So the Raiders within one right now 546 to go It was Butler with the yes a girls five eight championship coming up next Stephenson and Collins Hill that's going to be a good one and a doozy of course the boys will follow with tip county and south went out and talk about athletes that will be a fun one there again time is approximate with that boys game right around 845.
That's when a whole lot of high school hoops ahead right here on GPB making the decathlon anything over 16 points the game hits we'll have another what's that going to be tough on the line coming down the stretch state championships haven't been here in what, 36 years?
38 years.
Make it eight points as well.
Much younger than oh, you to say the least.
Coach Rob Johnson to get 13 years, 226 wins at Butler High School and get out the Augusta area.
And a little short on that one right there.
I thought he shot that one off the palm of his hand there.
David Williams and an alley way in didn't get the dunk, but it still is effective in the scoreboard over Carter with the lay and lost the handle on it back the other way it won't go ball loose rolling around in there you know amazing at the same here it is Here it is here right there you see it was underneath and then was able to pluck it and get it up above the rim.
Gray in this last trip was nice.
Leave behind as he penetrated once again, couldn't convert off the inbound foot on the line.
It's going to be a two point shot down on Booker Man what a night.
Booker seven here.
Unbelievable.
5 minutes left.
4138 Butler on top traveling, going to be called on Curry You see the way he leaves Bravo from a break Chorus on Once he's able to get the leverage on him he just bolts by and lays back on the other end here.
Was that tell you about McGee?
Probably a pretty good running back.
Yeah and the foul right there and maybe that will get chase off the shot Chase a67 junior and a chance for a three point play right here.
Nice one handed catch chance to tie it up.
And here we go again.
Bo down the stretch here under 5 minutes to play and nothing's decided yet.
That's the way to be tough in the line.
41 haul in the quarter boys State championship game here GHC.
Basketball from the arena at Gwinnett Center they've got it Bo back with you feel Procter with us Marcus Curry running the point and boogie down out of the corner Curry tough little shot wouldn't go LeVert there on the follow still wouldn't go ball out of bounds and it will go back to base So again another look inside there good days very fortunate there They got the hands on three times right at the rim here in the four minute mark here We're not bad Here we go, Here we go.
That slow down game right here and now a timeout going to be called it looks like full time out Ball by coach Floyd Mac and amazing Raiders again Mays averaging offensively 63 points a game this year defensively only giving up about 46 and a half.
Coach knows his team better than I do.
Certainly one item I don't know if I have the guts to go stall and at that point I just I want as many chances as I can.
I'd like to use my athletes in your area.
You don't have Johnson here in your area on him.
Don't take the ball and just get it.
All right?
Good.
Good, man.
I got oh so quick.
The coach, Ron Johnson, basically saying right there, hey, we're number 14.
He's Calvin Booker, of course, for Mays.
Get to handle that ball.
Let's get on him right now.
He's really busted it open here in this second half.
And Coach Mack with Benjamin, he makes him.
We don't have to force it.
What's this, guys?
The play composed.
So after the timeout Ramone McHale with two inbound gets it into Gray and Brey will have it up top 4 minutes left in the game and a different set run some on down there we've seen UCLA we've seen Princeton Houston a spread floor and now it's stacked offense little clinic being put on here tonight Crowd is on their feet here and get a little bit more vocal here in the final few minutes.
You know Coach Johnson wants to force it.
The grape brings it back out and this is what Mase wants him do.
Come after them.
They'll have options off the things that they want to do, not forcing anything.
You're obviously trying to spread the floor and hope to force Butler into mistake.
Maybe leave one of those passing lanes open that would lead to a bucket back up top.
Very patient right here.
But at the same time again, Butler not coming after him either.
That's boy oh boy.
Wow.
You're still right there.
There was you throw a ball that long ball, they run a chance again and picked off and any offense they've run, they're almost down to a minute and a half on this possession right here, just holding the basketball.
Ooh.
Booker with respect to that, we were at 4 minutes after that last time out now at 225 and now the greater offensive pick up and knocked away from behind script and a good job defensively by Scott Evans After all that you don't know you don't know you own temple, you don't know what your team is trying to do.
Young women take it to don't take it did it guys to.
I'm just indecisive I think it's just not played enough today gives them the feel and understanding of curry might have lost some footing right there for Butler back on the other end Mays with it on near turnover inside Chase puts it up it won't go and a jump off ball possession arrow to the Butler Bulldogs Did you see how quickly wow Curry got on the floor after that loose ball?
It was like lightning quick, like a cobra straight.
Marcus Curry.
He's another guy, only six foot two.
Of course, it's, you know, pretty good size typically.
But to get some of these six, six and six, seven down there, he has really been all over the place.
So good at backcourt pressure here from the Raiders minute 45 left high ball game 41 all the guy puts up the shot it hits Ricky McGee.
He can get to that spot any time he wants.
Rob Johnson can just spread the floor say take break Double figures for McGee, the six foot senior.
So now the ball is in Mays court trailing by two and that one knocked away.
But looks like they're going to get curry for the Fowler.
Nice This step by doesn't look good look now here's a little look at it You see he can get there any time he wants is what we're talking about against Gray and I love Graham.
He played a great game.
But then in that one particular option, he's able to get there.
Any time you want to get through free, throw would go for Emerson to get Brandon Emerson at the line.
But Butler versus Mays again, four times five lead changes.
And this ballgame right here, it's everything we thought it'd be and more missed both and Butler with the rebound now having a great game and if you've got a convert down the stretch two lead blocking foul on Brady and we have had some good games we can only hope that those five eight games are as good as these have been putting it well surely will be good for them.
Sensational basketball the Stevenson and Collinsville girls coming up following this game.
We want to stick around for that as you get a look at Ricky McGee, the leading scorer for Butler coming into this game, one eight points here today.
And this is on the front end.
And again, free throws.
Right now you're in a situation where free throws can win it or lose it.
Absolutely.
He's got to convert down the stretch you get this up is what you live for down the road and hits on the second one there.
So one of two at a time out on the floor, 2 minutes left in the game and still a one possession basketball game 4441.
The Butler Bulldogs and Mayes Raiders going at it for the quarter.
Boys state championship here at the Arena Gwinnett Center and I think an excellent timeout by Coach Johnson and to set it up for his guys Hey guys we lead by three you know don't listen to no stupid fouls play tough defense but certainly don't foul a three point shooter on rebound Plus listen in rebound and Jimmy can help you go 3040 Coach Matt Dillon amazing three score fall on time out with that type of fans around the feet right now we mentioned a while back about it being quiet.
It's not quiet anymore, though You know you come down to this point this season, it all comes down to the final minute and ten of your final game to decide the state championship.
And this is you know, this is why they go go added it in November and December and all those pre season holiday tournaments and with hopes of wrapping up right here and the game is on the line for you looking inside that ball knocked away big defense right there and a timeout going to be called a heads up play right there by Tyrese say in the timeout I'm sure coach Mac and I didn't hear the timeout I'm sure he wanted to feed the post and feed chase and you said be patient don't force it But they did force today to force it trying to get in there.
They have plenty of time for the Butler Bulldogs fans are on their feet.
They're all right behind that bench.
Look at that dog coming for you.
Don't be crazy in the hinterland.
That's a plus.
Needs to find a way.
Score here.
He got to get a stop on the board here in the right back.
You've got to go for the steal first.
And it's a tough, tough situation.
They got them because they got it trailing by three.
You want to get the steal, You want them to run a little offense you hope play, maybe can get the passing lane, but you can't let it go to flow with the ball in the time with that foul number on the ball Foul ball you saw that a little bit in the first half right before the half there.
They kind of let the tide down to try to force the dribble.
Turnover didn't happen.
So they got to pick go ahead, go, go and go go back to his team, play five on court.
Me, whoever the passer is, whoever it was, leave that man and go immediately too.
You want to double who was ever getting the ball.
51.9 on the clock.
Butler basketball three point lead backcourt pressure from Mayes trying to get the ball in though, and it looks like it's going to be the time out and then threw it in.
Yeah it's going to be a foul on Dre though.
He actually came across that bad line there making contact on the inbound.
You know I don't know if Willie Crosby, the official at that point saw it but he called timeout and then threw it in and another foul so gray with a pair of quick fouls called on him here that only a couple of seconds off that clock I should say this maybe it doesn't make any difference that he called timeout.
And as far as officiating is concerned, well, those in free throw numbers on the day 13 of 21 Butler with a few more opportunities Mayes four of nine Butler has been more active and I think that's why all those interior fouls Butler's been so active on the boards.
Brandon Everson checking in for Mayes little size advantage there as McHale Raspy goes out within the game with 11 points and he couldn't get that free throw to go there So back and running still 4441 to 2 here and that's you'll see Mayes trying to spread the floor here and run that for corners They're going to attack that basket shot from outside three point shot wouldn't go for Johnson rebound Butler and a foul going to be called and once again the Bulldogs will head back the line here fans again on their feet McGee almost could have sealed this game in his last free throw but we'll see now if Britton Harris can still 31 seconds to go.
And that's an eternity in basketball, as we all know, can last a while.
Still not decided here yet, but with a free throw right here at the front could hit it.
Boy, this is a bricks specialist concentration.
Of course, again, playing last night may have something a little bit to do with that, although again, we didn't seem like it had much of an effect on these players.
And the second free throw also off the front of the rim.
There's a big board ball loose, though jump ball call and possession arrow to me.
Wow.
So it's still a one possession game, just one free throw right there.
It's a22 possession game.
Basically.
Now, Mayes they're breathing new life here.
You know, we were talking about that That was such an emotional win over Dunwoody that you know Butler, may have been obviously was mentally exhausted after that game.
Butler, again the number two team in the state coming in upsetting number one Dunwoody last night right here at the arena at Gwinnett.
The turnaround from inside three point shot for two other than Devin Booker Wow And we're all tied up again with seconds left.
The Butler Bulldogs and that call the time out they're playing hands up don't turn the corner.
That's where Austin puts up the shot that 4 seconds to put back won't go and it's going to be out of bounds and it will stay with Butler at 1.3 on the clock.
Coach call timeout Set something up.
Wow How do you like that?
Booker has come up huge today and you're going to look at the timeouts there Butler and Mayes with two apiece but only 1.3 on the clock And mental man How big is Calvin Booker been today?
Well, just absolutely incredible.
He's got a nice stroke from the perimeter and I think that was his first attempt from the deep corner.
Here it is right there.
And nothing but nylon.
Unbelievable.
Try to stay on that pivot foot right there.
You're going to look at the huddles and now the Raiders got to play defense.
And Coach Johnson, you see Coach Mack, but Coach Johnson did not call timeout.
He had enough faith in his team, much like Coach Perceptive.
Coach came with the same suggestion to let his go.
No, what they want to do in the end and they did exactly what has been working for them all game and that is the ball.
McGee's hands turning the corner and break you know it's one thing if you've got four or 5 seconds here to try to work it inside, but 1.3, you're going to be inbound that ball and shoot it.
Well, you've got time to to load up and shoot here's the reaction from coach Rob Johnson on that last three point shot and win taken out of the sails there a little bit, but a chance to win it right here.
Exciting basketball right here on GPB.
It doesn't get any better than this.
Well, you going to get the back screen and come to the basket?
Doesn't look like that set up, though.
44 apiece.
Mayes wanting to see how Butler was going to line up offensively and now they'll call a time out of their own here didn't want to get caught out of position.
Well they just want to have an idea of what their what they're thinking and might be headed for some team here go 1.3 and then Tennessee on based on practice.
Well yeah what you can't do it but you know as aggressive as those teams have been they say we could bring you in here where you know if you're Butler you got to think possibly one thing I mean you could dump it inside or maybe try to draw a foul, you know, dumping it in one of those big guys that could maybe get up there a little bit, maybe somewhat of an alley oop pipe play off of an in about a week has led to the back screen.
Then you can come down the lane and put something up there and then at least have an attempt.
So here we go.
After the timeout, both teams on the floor and the Butler Bulldogs with a chance to win it right here.
1.3 on the there's the back scream Edwards shot at the buzzer and a walk through and we are headed overtime and the 40 boys championship Butler 44 Mayes 44.
Oh man had it up had it open.
Look right there too.
But yeah, he sure did.
He also had another option right in the middle of the floor, but did not wait and choose to take it.
Unbelievable.
Here's that last play right here off the inbound off balance a little bit in the middle.
And of course, Gordon had enough time for the put back there anyway.
Well, and they're going to look at coach Floyd Maxwell of the Mays Raiders again, still breathing life here you face to come back and what an effort.
Well, I shouldn't have said that before since they stole the triple overtime game they traded.
That's what they traded me the chunk for it.
Oh, man.
Well, you know, still a lot of basketball on tap for us tonight at GPB.
That's right.
That's right.
You know, Butler has led pretty much this entire game for the most part.
It's gone back and forth, though, and you just kind of had a feeling that Mays would stay there with him, you know, stay within three or five points.
And then first they get that big three point bucket from Booker right there at the end of regulation.
And here we are in overtime.
And how do you like that?
You know, you get to a point like this and you hate to see a team lose just because both teams are so deserving of it, but somebody is going to have to lose this game.
Booker's really carried Mays down the stretch here, and it's time now for the big kid Rashod Chase to just show up and be a hero here.
He's really not had a great game, although they haven't tried to feed him.
Let's go ahead, throw it out over to Phil Proctor, who's standing by.
Phil, what's happening?
Okay, I'll just listen to Coach Mac was giving instructions.
He told them three things.
Take your time, box out, protect the ball.
Let's see if it works out.
Pays off with Floyd Mac again in his 10th season with the Mays Raiders trying to win a state championship.
4 minutes in a four minute overtime period to decide this year's quarter, boys state basketball champion.
So we go there right where we started back at the beginning of this game again.
Dave Gardner Bobak, with you, Phil Proctor, also with us as we get set for the first overtime.
But there there may there may be more because of it, because of what Beau said.
I'm going to blame it on, Oh, man.
Mays controlling the tip.
Gavin Booker The hot hand in this second half, Emerson kicks it back out the break good ball movement by the Raiders.
Butler opens up man to man they double down on the post back out those will reset it here but we're not trying to force the issue look inside there a little open move reverse layup fly to face on a follow up but it is a big foul there.
You can look at it, another look at it right there.
Boy, power nearly got the reverse to go before that on the other end.
McGee driving can't get it to go but Carter is there on the follow offense waking up here and you see it again right here Carter underneath got the position and got it to go back on the other end left hander there for Emerson.
Oh and he was in overtime to open up the up and now we got a cook By the way McGee with the ball is the spitting image of former Falcons receiver Wally Francis moves like him to behind the head faster kept alive it into the hands of the Andre breaks you on one on the other end and it lays it up and in Orlando does it away run the fast break 5046 and a tie on the floor to be called by the Butler Bulldogs 214 to go in overtime and Mays with a four point lead right here.
Mays just in a big crunch time.
They needed something to play for in a hurry.
Good ball movement right there and Johnson with the finish.
Wow.

So after the time out here, 5040 64. lead time outs Butler with one Mays with two left here in this over time period, they have.
Gardner Bobak with you, Phil Proctor joining us as well.
And they're the two minute bikers.
Butler brings it up in an unfamiliar position.
Dig down by four points.
It's something we haven't had to worry about too much today.
Coach Mack made a defensive adjustment the last two times the butler's brought it up.
He's had Dunson on the game, shot from outside, from Curry off the mark Tyrese Harris on the follow wouldn't go and a jump ball call underneath possession here will stay with Butler He saw McGee was getting wherever he wanted to go against great but you know what he also did against Dunson in the first one Check out the game here Bo six six ties today seven changes.
It's gone back and forth and all of a sudden it's heated up.
Crowds get more into it.
You can look at Johnson over there on the bench, favoring a step outside, three point shot, too strong from Edwards.
But the follow is up and is for the D. So back to a two point game here and now.
If you're Mayes, you may actually want to run some of that clock here up by two and force Butler out the foul just the Bulldogs aren't going to give him that much breathing room though you know I'm trying to recall but every time they've this every time they fall I don't think they converted Boston red and yellow.
I think you know you're only up by two and like those percentages trying to get it in there in the hands of gray and gray dribbling out there, ball movement right there, taking care of the basketball.
Oh, knocked away and then taken right back by Booker and Boyle boys.
Nearly showtime on the other end Emmerson back out to Booker under a minute 45 seconds left and a foul finally going to be called on Butler It's going to be on McGee.
Well he needed to then 42 seconds remaining down to the and I play Gray has been on the line yet has he.
No I don't I don't I don't believe he has Maybe one time here in the first half and a timeout on the floor as Drake was set to go to the line.
There are 42 seconds left in overtime.
Quite a boys action good time timeout Set the situation for you guys.
What do you do if he makes what do you do if you don't?
What if you go oh we're going to call a timeout when we bring the ball up all different options really.
Your team has to be clear timeouts now just just want a piece for both teams.
Now, after that last one, we're going to look inside the Butler bulldog huddle there with Rob Johnson winning well over 200 games in a rebound right here in downtown just inside the base Raiders again, 25 and four coming into today's game out of Atlanta.
I get a quick reminder, Stephenson and Collins Hill coming up next in the five GHC girls state championship and of course, following that ballgame later on tonight.
Is it going to be a good one as well?
Tip county in the state championship and that's going to be a fun one.
There are a lot of good athletes in that boys game later on South Gwinnett making up the other side of the bracket there in approximately 845 but it could be pushed back.
Gray was on the line for very early in the game as I remember him putting the ball the floor got one?
Yeah, he was one of two and now two of three.
It looks like, well, two more moves in a bag, a one hits footwork and those are huge right there as a dynamite 5248 and a two possession now.
Oh oh.
Now the back and the foul.
Wow.
And so all of a sudden Ricky Mcgeechan striking back hand off the dribble.
You know, you've been dominant on the boards.
Could you possibly with 34 seconds a lot of time remaining, but you could but could you possibly miss this?
I don't.
I don't.
I my my information is make it play tough defense.
15 points today for Ricky McGee.
Perry rebounds and he hits the free throw completes the three point play and that's huge.
It's back to a one point game.
And now you got to wonder if fatigue is going to start to set in a little bit over time.
Down hill things these guys have to address the offensive.
This is ginkgo biloba time.
They've had to they've had to find that extra gear because number 15, Jonathan Murray it but they're not going to let Mays walk the ball to the floor They're in a quick foul.
So back down to the other end.
We go there Coach Mack Brandon Emerson, go to the line pattern Sure of overtime games.
Of course, last night there was an overtime game and the quite a gruesome final ball here for Anderson.
The team really shoot the free throws to end in that first half.
But as you mentioned with the game on the line here, they picked up the play seven points for Emerson now five boards This is a gigantic because Butler has not shown us tonight where they can shoot the three Anderson with one blow It's so Emerson two of two and it's back to a three point game 30.
Seconds left and traveling to the called on McGee Wow And a big turnover right there.
I thought that might have been a little contact before he walked.
I thought that was a tough call.
Wow And butler in at number two in the state out of region three quarter a maze out of region five and the raiders for the three point lead and the basketball Great call but Coach Mack because I didn't know if I wanted to play full court press in there and you know I just thought that maybe you wouldn't expect them to shoot the three or be able to convert the three quick foul from Curry.
A lot of two and three sport athletes on the floor here.
And as we mentioned, Butler with four players averaging double figures and lots of football players out there on the floor and that is really help their aggressiveness.
They actually averaging more tackles than they do points on the football field has been an excellent game two and two teams are extremely well coached Booker at the line hits well amazes and perfect down the stretch line and they deserve it You just imagine Butler how they feel is 23 to go 27 points for Calvin Booker That's amazing Wow in the state championship game he can retire he can retire and go into Georgia State, open the numbers, make it 28 points here.
Now it's 5651, a five point game, 18 seconds left and inside steal, baby.
Tyreese Harris the bucket and then a quick time out here.
Still 14.8 on the clock and you know, that ball was going to try to get a quick quick foul here He try to put Mays back at the line and hope that they miss Ramon McCarthy in the game for Amazing did a great job against him bringing the ball up really quick and you call back very quickly coaches on a great job of changing up his defense against the Butler point Butler again with one timeout left Mayes is out of him you got one score there 5653 14.8 seconds on the clock here What a boys action It's been fun and exhausting watching these guys up and down the floor here, particularly in the second half.
And the offense has come a lot here in overtime.
Hurry the inbound and there's the quick foul right there and as Booker is covered up but Calvin Booker nice job from the line here tonight will go back to do a great job Coach Black coach Mack did a great job of getting your hot shooter to the ball and making him available for an inbounds pass.
And you got to think if he makes it, he makes one right here.
Again, it's back to a two possession game.
How does he know Butler preferred not to foul him and hits the first 29 points chance for a 30 point game in the state championship.
What a way to go out.
What a way to finish out that career.
That's something you know six poor senior forward who hit that big three point shot three for three from the line right there as you see it, that big three point shot at the end of regulation to put Mayes in a position to force overtime and possibly a state championship.
And 30 points for Mr. Booker tonight.
Unbelievable Touchdown, No foul.
Mayes down on the other end too strong there ball loose and it looks like foot was on the line there on the way back in Coming back in drag that foot tough break and a five point game now with just 5 seconds left to run them out and a quick foul right there.
But once again into the hands of Booker.
And that might do it right there.
The Mayes Raiders with a five point lead at the line, 3.8 on the clock and they're thinking state championship right now.
They're not thinking it this over.
But Floyd Mack, senior in his 10th season with the Mayes Raiders, winners of 14 consecutive ballgames coming in to tonight's championship.
What a great coaching job as Magnus does.
And that was a come from behind classic come from behind win in Booker back on of course Mayes falling to Garrity in the 2001 final so four years ago there and making it back here and Butler the disappointment after beating unbeatable Dunwoody Oh that's what happens a lot of times you'll see teams that'll get that big win but just be emotionally spent.
Exactly unable to really come back from that.
And Booker with icing on the cake well finish tonight with 31 points final seconds off the clock and that is going to do it 5953 the final the men's raiders the tables of four classic quarters that boys championship and the celebration is on at midcourt.
Oh, what a great win.
Take your hats off, though, to the Butler Bulldogs and coach Rob Johnson.
An excellent season in the top five pretty much all year long.
Of course, that big upset over Dunwoody last night but just couldn't quite close the deal here in overtime and this thing could have gone either way, Bo, but just some exciting basketball here tonight.
But in the end it's Mays.
Let's throw it on down to Phil Proctor is standing by with a winning coach, Floyd Mac.
I am.
And here it is.
Coach Mac, Congratulate.
And you know, I watched you on the sideline.
It was like watching an aerobics workout, man, How are you feeling right now?
I feel great.
I feel great.
The kids came back and we did what we were supposed do in the first four quarters.
We rebounded the ball and we hit a free throw down the strip.
We neutralized number 23.
You didn't get rid of that man in an overtime, and they did what it was supposed to do on the ball.
We protected the basketball.
So stall technique, where that one come from?
Well we do a lot of people think we are it.
But I really arresting the guy to keep my spine on the floor without having to use a time out for what I do is going to make the defense relax a little bit for that.
No basketball.
The element of the problem.
You make a move, then you're going to have resting a rhythm.
That's all we're going to score.
Well, thanks for the education.
Now I know congratulations.
Go celebrate.
Thanks a lot.
Back to you guys.
All right.
Congratulations to the Baize Raiders 2004 state champs.
That's going to wrap things up from the arena at Gwinnett Center.
Five action coming up.
You won't want to miss it.
