Clear the runway is coming It's slated to pull out from three and watch this guy go drive backs it he gets it.
We welcome you to game two of championship weekend here on the great GPB.
This is Gil Tyree, along with my partner in crime, Herb White.
And we had a great match up here today as you see Southwest, the cab taking on Miller Grove.
We saw the girls.
Now we'll see the boys.
And of course, we got a great basketball game here today.
Herb, I want to ask you this.
When you take a look at both of these basketball teams, you know, their big men are the ones that dominate it.
And you got two great big men here.
You got two great big guys.
Tony Parker, of course, six, nine, about 275, maybe the top big man in the country.
A lot of people say he's primarily an inside player, but he does have a nice he's developed a nice little 15, 16 jump foot jump shot.
So that's giving him an extra dimension.
GILL And on the other side, you got Williams, Shaq Goodwin and of course he'll go to a to the University of Memphis with Josh Passer and there you see the big fella also plays football We got him here on GPB when Buck Godfried had him on the football team and they took on mirrors.
But what a target.
Well, he's going to feel like he's playing a little football, bouncing up there against Tony Parker, but Shaq doesn't mind that.
And he's also our slam dunk champion that believes Jack can get up in there.
Plays a little more out on the court than Tony does.
So he can present some problems for Tony Parker as well.
You know, when we talk about and you're a historian and of course, Herb, like nobody I mean, nobody knows high school basketball in the great state of Georgia.
And this gentleman, you got to go back really to Dwight Howard and Randolph Morris when you had two kids.
Of course, Randolph Morris went to Landmark Richmond and Dwight Howard went to southwest Atlanta Christian Academy to profile guys.
And of course, you know, Dwight Howard went directly, you know, from high school to the NBA.
If he had selected a college, it would have been the University of North Carolina.
Randolph Morris went on to play for Tubby Smith up in Kentucky.
Right.
Those guys never met in a state championship game.
No, I think the only game they really played against each other was primarily just an exhibition almost match they put on television.
So this one's for all the marbles.
All right.
The route to get here to the championship game.
First you see Miller Grove and of course, they're going for an unprecedented fourth consecutive state championship and three other schools.
They will join that group.
And you see how they got here, of course, Manchester, Loganville, Mary's and then Jonesboro.
They annihilated them here on Wednesday night by the count of 7249.
And Tony Parker had 30 points and just dominated things on the other side, southwest of CAP and the route they've taken over, Osborne, Cedar Shoals, Chattahoochee and then North Clayton, a seven point victory over them on Wednesday night, 74 to 67.
So like I said, the route is here.
And of course the boys and the girls and the girls also crowned champions here.
And Miller Grove has won the championship tonight for the girls.
Now let's check in with a third member of our crew here today.
Lindsey Theory.
Lindsey, it's all yours.
Hi, girl.
Thanks.
Well, it's almost deja vu here on the basketball court.
Now, just a little bit ago, we saw Southwest a cabin.
Miller Grove Girls.
Now it's obviously the guys now Southwest.
The head coach, Duane McKinney, says not all are going to see superb athletes.
We're going to see some superb kids out here.
He says he has no egos on his team and his big stars.
Shaq, he loves basketball so much that he would even go pick up, play a pickup game with ten year olds.
That's how much his kids love the game.
And hopefully it comes through with how they play today, guys.
All right, Lindsey, thank you.
Tipoff is straight ahead here on the great GPB, the for a state title.
Will it be Miller Group or will it be that gentleman, Zach Goodwin, leading the Southwest, the Panthers to a title?
We'll be right back.
Day night basketball here at the point that center, the arena, the one that center in Duluth and of course, the starting lineups here tonight.
First, let's take a look at the Wolverines of Miller Grove.
And, of course, they're led by their whole World Center.
Okay.
He'll go center forward some time.
Tony Parker and of course, being looked at by a lot of teams, college teams right now, Brandon Morris, you see Tony Evans and Justin Coleman and Kristen Houston and the coach, the dapper in always I mean, always sharp, dressed, charming, white.
And of course shamans done an outstanding job.
You see his numbers this season at Miller Group and getting it done.
On the other side, we take a look at Southwest the cap Jordan Price and you see Shaq Goodwin they are 610 sophomore and Darius Turner and Justin Holman and Brian Bell who at 610 and gets it done and you see center guard center and also the forwards and they like to run pretty much a three guard offense and pretty much through and what a job coach McKinney has done at South West to cap an outstanding job Duane McKinney in his second season 45 and 13.
His numbers on his career right now, those are some tall starting lineups.
Everybody's 610 on both teams, but we'll just get past that and say, you're right.
Coach McKinney, two years, got him to the playoffs his first year.
Now he's got him in the state championship game.
And as everybody knows, his teams have played three times this year.
Not droves come out on top each time, but it's better to possession game or less for the final score.
So you can throw those out because it's a state championship.
Exactly.
And that's what I talked to, talk to Sherman White about that.
I said, you know, the fact that you've defeated Southwest the cap three times, does that give you an advantage?
He said, no, he'll he just reiterated what you just said, Herb, that this is for all the marbles.
You throw those three out the window and basically, you know, it's an opportunity for Southwest to have to get it done.
And that's what Miller Grove is concerned about here this afternoon.
Right.
And, you know, we talked about the two big guys, but of course, Miller Grove's got some other great players.
Brandon Moore, a six foot eight he can play out on the floor, is a great passer.
I think he actually is the key for Miller Grove.
He creates so many things with his penetration and dishing and then they've also got Tony Evans, another six six inside outside player.
He's gone major college and then you've got Jordan Price playing along with Shaq Goodwin, who's going to Auburn, who's an excellent, excellent offensive player.
So a lot of talent in this ball game.
We welcome you to JP's live and exclusive coverage of the Championship's championship weekend.
And of course, we had an opportunity to see the four state champions girls being crowned the first of four here tonight.
And always great to have you alongside her.
We had an opportunity to work last year together and kind of trading places with Mark Harmon this year.
My favorite time of the year, no doubt about it.
High school basketball.
I can remember my state championship game like it was yesterday and our three talented officials for tonight's game, Charles Dunn, Jean Cherry and Duane Gribble will be calling The action by the tip is controlled by Southwest.
The Cavs and bring it across The time line right now is Kadarius Toney, the Wolverines open man to man.
They'll change defenses when they have to on the right side, negotiating up and in on all classes.
Jordan Price and the Panthers take a two nothing lead early on here Nice job by Tony Parker maintaining his position didn't foul me it was going to be two first in Houston over the Morris on the right side bounce pass down low and negotiating and that's Tony Evans still moving and gets it up and in and just like that we're tied in to southwest to Kevin Milagro for the championship and for here in the great state of Georgia, Gill Tyree and Herb White here on GPP today along three pulls class and he gets it and that's Jordan Price one make Jordan call those now on no deal that's your bacon from out there you got a call of 5 to 10 under 7 minutes to go early on to three zone said go picked it up right there in the entry pass and look at low spinning and that's on a baseline and a ten footer but Tony Parker to go by for now but there is Turner was actually man to man and maybe a box and one on Kadarius Turner playing man to man.
We'll have to check that out.
It's Turner.
The Post Goodwin struggles with it, still struggles with it under attack.
Regains it still with it.
Triple team drives the baseline and block and out of bounds.
And great coverage by Tony Parker.
And you see the much ballyhooed matchup between the two big fellas Florida state right Wasn't a slam dunk.
Champion was looking to throw one down there but Tony Parker wasn't going to have it.
Gil Southwest, The cab regains control That's only inbounds and drive in the middle and putting up a jump hook to go is Jordan Price seven for the Panthers up by three.
Morris across the timeline for Milagro and we do have that box in one Kadarius car Turner is playing Christian Houston one on one and the rest of play in that box and zone.
So it jumped defense right off the bat for Southwest.
Interestingly, it's Justin Culver's goes to the post and gets it back out, shoots the three air ball and the ball's controlled by Morris spins goes in the lane a play that's no good and we have a listen couldn't see who that foul was on but if we can get that ISO where you can see way over in the corner of your screen Christian Houston is just staying completely out of the offensive set and good there is Turner and he just out there side by side Mars.
Brandon Mars is headed to the University of Georgia at the line first of two.
That one goes seven five.
Now 544.
In the opening period, you usually see an exotic defense.
They'll use it on a great offensive player to try to take him out of his game.
But they're trying to upset Miller Grove's offense by man to man in Christian Houston.
Morris negotiates the first, the first two free throws, and that'll make it a76 ballgame.
TURNER Working against Houston on the right side, the price against drives pass.
MORRIS And we have a whistle and price was able to go baseline her against Morris But price can do a little bit of everything on offense.
You saw the Teardrop Teardrop drive a moment ago he took the baseline early on.
He's also got a nice jump shot.
That's why you have to play him tight and he can't go around.
You go foul on Mars.
His first fully afternoon missed free throw number one but price he'll try to do it again seven six early on the Panthers over Miller Grove and you saw Shaq Goodwin and Tony Evans get tied up and both are being warned by the officiating crew Culver will bring it up cross the time low like Herb said Southwest a cabin that junk defense right now zone they look for Parker in the middle and they throw it away turnover.
Well it's working southwest to cab they've got Miller Grove not used to having somebody else run the offense.
Christian Houston is usually the guy who's running the offense in Justin Coleman out there now trying to run it and made the bad pass to various Turner on the right side the price spots up for three Paul Airball no good saved inbounds by Justin Holliman It was out of bounds so Miller Grove will retain possession.
You get a look at Sherman White what an outstanding job he's done and we can't talk about it enough.
Looking good with that sharkskin gray suit.
Well, only standing out.
Two other teams have won four championships in a row, which Miller Grove is trying to do tonight.
And it's true.
Yeah, unbelievable history.
If they can pull that off west over from Albany.
Did it 1993, 93 and linear way back in 1925 through 28.
Calvin will walk it up, play by price at the head of the horn looking for the entry pass goes down two to Evans who goes to Mars back to Calvin out at three point land They look down low to Parker negotiating Jump up count it.
that's sweet Tony Parker.
That's sweet.
Let that one go from about a foot over the hoop at all.
429 in the opening quarter here.
Joe Tyree, Herb White, glad to have you with us here on Championship weekend, the first of four here in the great GPP.
Turner driving over the right side passes over there looking for a man and that's Coleman spinning around now up top to price Miller Grove really extending that defense man to man.
They're picking him up and price at the head of the horn goes through his legs, scramble on the floor, loses it, has the presence of mind to give it to Turner.
And that's stolen away by Korver but going the other way the outlet to Morris so got a bust out to put Miller Grove up to ten eight 340 here in the opening quarter Get a good look at the crowd here at the arena at the Gwinnett Center 33 That'll help Miller Grove's offense for sure if they don't have to set up try to play against that jump defense, get it out on the break.
Goodwin working against Evans.
Now to Turner.
Turner working against Houston, looking for the entry blast.
A good one, nowhere to go spins goes down low and the dunk right there Treveon Bell great look by Shaq Goodwin right there Drew the double team and did the right thing Dropped it down to his teammate tied at ten Calvin walks it over to Morris, dribbles between his legs again southwest to cab in that zone they go down low to Parker against Goodwin and we have a whistle.
they're going to get Shaq to reach an end.
Good, aggressive, defensive to be a timeout called by coach Dwight I believe Tom out with the score ten all here on the Florida state championship Brandon Morris with the flush.
We'll be right back after these very important messages on the great GPB.
back here in Duluth are score ten all between Southwest the cab and Miller Grove, Georgia Tech, which kids have teamed up to compete for cash and a U.S. patent with the 2012 Inventor Prize at Georgia Tech.
Tune in to GPB Tuesday, March 13th at 7:00 to see the six finalists demonstrate and defend their innovations in front of a panel of expert judges to see who will be this year's champion.
Wowsers, there's something you can't miss.
on the great GP.
You like inventions stuff, it's great stuff.
Great stuff.
Like to see those smart young folks through and will get a look at the Miller Group huddle.
Head Coach Sherman, do you see the field goal percentages?
Shocking or no surprise to hear good shooting by both teams.
Southwest Cab four for seven, Miller Grove, four for five.
And you know, it's I'm sure Miller Grove has seen some different defenses this year.
Most of them probably meant to stop Tony Parker, but nothing like they've seen so far tonight.
But it looks like, okay, they're going back straight man to man now.
Evans All the inbound to Houston, he drives and then launches up their three That was Justin Calvin could go no good and the rebound taken down by Southwest the captain we go the other way Turner across the time line top of the key now ten all to 29 in the opening quarter a check Goodwin over the price driving cut off goes inside and the ball intended over there for number 24 Davion Bell is out of bounds a turnover third turnover right now for southwest the cab early on I think Ray was looking for the shot and wasn't looking for the pass.
Justin Calvin walks it across the time line over the right side to Brandon Morris.
Morris stops, looks over, goes down low and negotiating low is Evans off flex 1210 now the Wolverines up by two over the Panthers and Southwest again as Turner gets going I'm just saying that defense is going to leave a lot of driving room when you're pulling one man that far away from the basket every time it opens the floor up for south with for Miller Grove to take it to the basket price tried to double clutch and Tony Parker was there.
Take a look at this on Tony Parker and you see Evans going down the baseline.
Always tough to guard a south ball.
Look at the move against Shaq Goodwin and calls glass and he gets it south west to Cavs still with the basketball Turner looking down low low on the block as Goodwin gives it back to Turner to man game throws up a ten footer No good rebound taken down by Calvin a miller grove We're going the other way across the timeline defending there but Southwest the Cavs will immediately get back in that zone Morris up top pass in to Parker spinning and loses it and we have a whistle It's going to be on Shaq and that'll be his second If it is Nope Take a look Take us through her foul or no foul.
Yeah, he hacked them across the arm.
It's a good call.
So Parker will go to the line and we've talked about it all afternoon long.
The matchup between the state's two premier big man.
See the senior.
He's been recruited by Kansas and UCLA, Ohio State and Duke and Georgia having a late opportunity, late run.
And a lot of people believe that he may hook up with his former well, not former soon to be former Miller Grove teammate Brandon Morris, who's headed who's committed to Mark Fox.
And what about Mark Fox and company getting it done last night?
You have a lot I don't know if I'm supposed to say a whole lot about my alma mater, but I'm going to.
Yeah, I'm really proud of those guys beating the really good Mississippi State team last night in New Orleans.
And they got their work cut out.
It was Vanderbilt tonight.
Parker connects.
It'll will make it a four point lead our biggest lead early on right here.
Interesting to see if Shaq Goodwin stays on the same side defensively is Tony Parker.
Now, what Emmanuel Walker now in for southwest the cat that's Turner double team goes the right side the price they look download a good one against Parker back to Turner drives the notebook you get the rebound right there was Justin Holliman and we have a whistle but you saw the penetration the ability of Turner to sneak through and Miller Grove has gone to three zone now.
Bill Goodwin inbound it to price up top they work it around the horn and that driving is Walker he misses a shot the rebound control by Miller Grove's Tony Parker ahead to Kristen Houston and a scramble for the ball out of bounds and southwest a cab will regain possession an eight to Miller Grove run and right now they have a four point lead 14 to 10 You see about 30 seconds to go here in the opening quarter.
Turner across the timeline goes over to Walker Walker out top Miller Grove tucked in that zone Turner tries to look goes out for a three ball by Walker and it's air ball it goes out of bounds Luther Grove will take over 10 seconds to go in the opening quarter Miller Grove up 414 to 10.
But Miller Grove's gone with that zone, trying to stop some of that early penetration by Southwest to cab.
And they did it again.
They got the shot they were looking for just came up short on the three pointer their Gill Kyrie Hammer in the ball game.
I'm sure that's an offense for defense right now that's Morris over the hammer he is pushed by price reaching in not a good foul by Jordan price out that part of the court What a physical specimen on price his first of the afternoon it'll trigger the inbounds by Kovac Koven gets it in that's Evans who launches a three and it's airball And then Goodwin hurls an apparent buzzer beater, but goes No way.
All right, so let's take a break.
The end of one Miller Grove up for 1410.
We'll be right back for the great GPB, the winner gets the fourth title here in the great state of Georgia back here in Duluth.
Gil Tyree, along with Herb White, and you see her score starting the second quarter.
Miller Grove, the Wolverines up by 4/4 team, the ten, and of course, Shaq Goodwin, the big fella, you see him there in the huddle with Coach McKinney.
And we have more on the strategy by Miller Grove and let's go over to Lindsey Thiry to contain the big fella.
Lindsey Yeah, Coach White very knows that Shaq's at the other end.
Obviously, he says that he wants his guys to go right after him.
Shaq's got two fouls is only through the first quarter.
They're going to try and get him to get his third right here.
And they also want to make sure they're not losing him in the post on the other end.
So it's all about Shaq right now on the Miller Grove side.
All right, Linsey, thank you.
And I want to defer to her White right now strategy by Shaun White to go after the big fella and get him out of it.
It's great strategy.
If you can do it.
I would imagine Coach McKinney if I was him, I might consider put Morris down on Parker, although that's about £100 weight difference there.
So I don't know.
It's a tough call because if they lose good, then they are in trouble.
So he's got to play without picking up that third foul.
And of course, John Nelson and Shaun Golden called the women's game in the girls game, which was won by Miller Grove or Rose Southwest to cap and congratulations go out to the Miller Grove Girls basketball team game one here and Duluth.
We're here at Game two.
And right now Miller Grove up by 414 ten 754 to go until halftime.
Now they've gone through a conventional two three I'd be front and Tony Parker as much as I could so Shaq wouldn't have to play right up on him from behind the aforementioned Parker with the miss in the middle on the jump hook Southwest, the cab runner.
After the rebound, Turner struggles with it and they spot for the foul and that looked like Kristen Houston on the foul on the region and earned his first 737 here in the second quarter of a four day state championship game between Miller Grove and Southwest.
A cab girl Tyree and her like three pointer to go by Braxton's.
But I know he told you he can do it all that was about two feet beyond the three point line with no problem by the price.
The Panthers now within one Houston wants it across the time line over on the left side the Morris they dump down into Evans they look for Parker and it's stolen a turnover The other way goes Turner the acrobatic move no good the rebound take off that strong and look by Alma Well not so much a steal on that play is a gift from Miller Grove They had Tony Parker in the middle.
He just lobbed it over his head southwest the cab with a lead by 115 to 14 second quarter still packed in that zone.
MORRIS Over on the right side, the Houston, they look for Colvin back to Houston to Mars Excellent ball movement and look for Evans down low And the ball was strip by price out of bounds so Miller Grove will regain possession well Brandon Miller with Morris with a good look unfortunately the receiver wasn't watching Coleman on the inbounds to Mars back to Culver spots up a three ball count it he 1715 back and forth to and fro Miller Grove and southwest to catch that's Turner on the right side and launching a three ball there was price no good the rebound fought for and controlled by Miller Grove pushing it ahead and driving and losing the basketball was Tony Parker and playing out of control was twice and we're going the other way that's Houston took Parker in transition didn't see anybody stepped in to draw the chance on that one eight points for Tony Parker 19 to 15.
Tell me somebody in major college basketball is going to love that.
The big fella running the floor price the entry pass to Goodwin and we have a whistle dunk you very much Herbalife Yep A clear path to the basket by Tony Parker.
Nobody wants to even try to mess with that when it in your face right in the living room.
Excellent shots by our cameraman here at the arena at the Gwinnett Center, 1915.
Glad to have you with us here on GPB Hill.
Southwest Cavs got to get to Shaq Goodwin more involved in the offense.
They tried right there, but they need to get him off a little bit.
He really hasn't been much of a factor so far on the offensive end.
Kenneth Lewis almost lost the inbounds that shot.
Good one spot up, no good price, smooth the rebound, throws it up and it does not go.
But it would've been an end one if he counted.
But a great rebound by price to go over the top and get it and have the presence of mind to put it up.
But he was fouled.
Let's take a look at the replay here.
Boy that's two on Houston his second foul on the rich in a moment ago Shaq got the ball one on one with Tony but he elected just a throw up about a 14 foot jump shot.
Let's see him be a little more aggressive if he gets one on one with Tony.
There you go.
Shaq going up against Parker.
Tip up no good.
Shaq there Again, the clean up, It's good.
That's what they need out of him.
Gill working the glass 1918 now 523 until half.
Done a good night here in Duluth Southwest the Cavs continue play that zone and they forced the steal great beyond build this game in the ballgame and that's Louis and it was rejected we go the other way Morris at the point over there Houston spots up for three ball count count it back and forth Turner to the glass what somebody has got to get back on defense.
GILL 22 to 2453 to go here until halftime.
What a ball game here on GPP Houston out top over the right side to Colvin Colvin working against Turner deep outside it's Houston over again to Colvin spots a 43 ball does not go Parker with the rebound negotiator inside gets tied up and Tony got away with a walk Then I believe they didn't call it it's going to be Southwest Cavs only alternating possession.
Miller Grove heating up from the three point arc.
Gill admits they made two in a row.
It just missed that one.
Take a look at the replay.
Herbalife, Tell us what we see early shuffle those feet right then then they didn't call it but it ends up justice prevails and Southwest Cab gets the ball turning it over to Shaq, who takes the three ball.
No good ill advised shot.
That's Houston drive in the lane from Miller Grove up in a big time slam dunk Tony Porter not a lot of difference in this game, but that's what the difference is.
Tony Parker's dunking and Shaq Goodwin's taking the three Tony Parker with ten 2420 Miller Grove up by four 356.
We're under four here in the second quarter.
Goodwin working against Parker drives throws it up blast No good tips it up no good There is a scramble underneath and Goodwin and Morris go for it and both go to the floor Good hustle play by Shaq Goodwin going to the basket that's what he needs to be do and use that leaping ability Put it up there go get it Some spirited play here in Will for a state championship game between Miller Grove and Southwest to cap this is a dandy the big fella saying hello welcome Good job.
We'll be right back after these very important messages.
Back here in Duluth.
And of course, we're getting ready for the outstanding high school football season here in 2012.
GPB Sports launches another great season of high school football with the Metro BCS Courtney Hill Classic August 25th, live from the Georgia Dome.
The classic is in its 21st year and will be bigger and better than ever.
We've added ten teams and will be televised in high definition across the great state of Georgia, beginning at 9 a.m.. Bobby State Champion.
The Grayson Rams and their star defensive lineman Robert Kim, South Georgia powerhouses Camden County and Colquitt County.
So get ready football junkies and tune in to GPB, the Great GPB August 25th for more than 14 hours of great high school football.
I know somebody is going to be at the end of the year one Herbalife.
yeah.
Love high school football.
I like all high school sports.
Starting off the season in the dome and then in the dome with the championships.
It doesn't get any better in that deal.
And on that last replay, we didn't have a chance to point it out.
But Shaq Goodman was in there with Tony Parker there, but he wisely backed off and let him dunk.
And Milagros doing exactly what they need to do with Shaq with two fouls.
They're taking it down and letting Tony have his way inside.
Take a look at the Tony Parker package and what is he able to do?
Tell us about it.
Well, it's through everything.
He hasn't shot his jumpshot yet tonight, Really?
Because no need to look, I mean, Southwest camp has not found a way to stop him inside.
So with two fouls on Shaq Goodwin, they're doing the exact right thing.
Just let him take his way inside.
Good shooting in the second half for Milagro.
Very efficient.
Four out of seven.
Excuse me.
In the second quarter, Southwest to have actually had 12 shots made.
Five of them.
They're getting more shots, but they're not getting them down.
So some questionable shots by Southwest DeKalb, actually, no doubt about it.
And of course, you look at these resumes up top and how they got here.
But you know, Miller Grove at that, they play that very tough schedule on national TV a lot.
And you took it Southwest to captain talking to Coach McKinney.
He said we were dead and buried in December.
You know, we were really struggling and boy, we turned it around.
And you look at both of these teams here in the championship right now for the great state look, it's Maurice, too.
It's funny.
Tony Parker on his plan.
I told you, Morris is very crafty.
Six, eight player with the Longhorns just reached right around Shaq.
Gordon it to Tony Parker and you're right town lost count with six and seven starting this season they had a gut check as the coach said it Christmas Barca with 12 and the Wolverines up six A little bit of a touch that's the right price looking for Turner the drive and Turner the little guy looks down low and the jump up by Bell was no good, but Shaq Goodwin was there to get the rebound and tap it up and in the Miller Grove leading out four under three until halftime.
And of course Mark Harmon and Jackie Brown getting you ready for the hoop aholic here on the great tip today Morris out of control ball stolen away by Justin Holman Holman to Turner Turner working against Houston now Houston over to Price They played a two man game over the holiday Holman working against Morris looks Let's download of price on the cut turn around and stop up and stuff so the ball will go over to Southwest Cavs going to keep it on the possession.
I know it's a jump ball but little bit of a questionable shot there.
Price jumping up in there and spinning around to take that short jump shot.
Don't believe he had to do that element on the inbounds to Shaq Goodwin over the price to Holman spot up three it now that's a good look wide open didn't force anything no yeah nice ball game one point just what we were expecting exactly 2625 Miller Grove out and fraud.
Morris walks it over to Culver and again Southwest to cab playing that matchup zone under two here that's Coleman setting up the offense the bounce pass down low to Morris who's double teamed back up top to Colvin to Parker spinning and hangs and scores and he didn't have that move last year Herbalife No he didn't he was carrying a little extra weight last year.
He's very light on his feet now.
That was sweet touch there.
And again, Shaq Goodwin had to back off just a little bit.
Tony Parker with 14 eight in this quarter lighting it up big time, showing why he's a five star recruit and one of the most sought after basketball players in the country.
The wild shot right there by price no good the outlet to Evans down to the Calvin who backs it out and changes his mind drives Allison up and in Nice move by Coleman very heady basketball move by Calvin and bad defense by Southwest the Cavs they had four on two defensively and let Colvin take it to the rack.
Taking it to the rack was Turner and he'll get the end one Kadarius Turner, who is a gamer.
He's the heart and soul of this team, the coach says.
And Kadarius in the seventh grade was playing with Shaq and Jordan, and he looked around.
He said, Hey, we're going to be some pretty good ball players one of these days.
I kind of had a premonition and he was right.
And all those kids played at Chapel Hill, met in school, played together and learn how to play the game.
That's Houston with the rebound of the missed free throw But Turner to Colvin 18 footer no good that's Houston with the rebound to Morris gets down low the shot blocked out of bounds by Raven Bell Take a look at the blocker Boy nice time and Shaq Goodwin showing a little bit of awareness He's carrying them pretty hard.
He's been in this whole game having to go up against big feet off the cut That's Colvin The Miss Shaq was nowhere to be found, but Tony Parker was there to get it and slams it home.
Well, Shaq was lucky he didn't get his third foul and he knocked down the jump shooter box out, move 32 to 27, under 15 seconds to go.
Speaking of Shaq, double team by Parker and still with the basketball is Shaq Goodwin working hard and gets it in 32 to 29 ahead of the pack as Coleman drives around Shaq Goodwin throws it up and no good and a follow up by Houston is no good and that they're asking for a golden call but they won't get it.
But that will come to the end of the first half with the score.
Milagros 32 and Southwest to Cab 29.
Let's go to Lindsey Thiry standing by.
What's Sherman like?
Lindsay All right, Coach story, the first has to be have first half has to be Tony Parker living up to his billing tonight.
Yeah, he's playing well.
We're getting the ball in good spots to him and he's doing a good job of making sure he finishes the play and he's doing a good job just playing within his game, doing what he's done all his career here at Milagro, trading baskets here for the most part of the first half.
How do you guys go ahead in the second?
We've got to do a better job on the defensive side of boxing now and get more rebounds.
I think they're good.
They're killing us with the second shot.
We're getting them to take shots that we wanted to take, but we're just not doing a good job of rebounding.
We're just doing a bad job of rebounding.
If we do that, I think, you know, I like our chances in the second half.
All right.
Thanks, Coach Murray, Let's go over you on the set.
Lindsay, thanks so much.
We are at halftime, the boys for a state championship game between Miller Grove and Southwest DeKalb Miller Grove ahead, 32 to 29 at the break.
Coming up at half time, we will talk to both principals.
We'll also find out what fans have been talking about online.
Plus, we'll have first half highlights and staff, all that more coming up on our GPB champions Weekend show right here on GPB.
Welcome back.
We are at halftime with the boys for a state championship game here on championship weekend on GPB.
Right now it's Miller Grove leading Southwest to Cap 3229.
This has been a barnburner.
Lots of great highlights and we'll show you those coming up a little bit later.
We welcome into the program right now, the principal of Southwest Camp High School Angela.
But they have thanks for coming on with us.
And you were telling me that you're a grad of Southwest, a cab and now you're the principal.
Yes.
Class of 1989 from Southwest.
Okay.
Of high school.
I wasn't asking for your age There anything but what's it been like in school this week with both the boys and?
The girls team making the state championship game?
Our school have a lot of spirit, so everybody was excited about both of the teams making it to the finals today.
We were excited just to be chosen for the Elite Eight, but to make it to the finals, both the boys and girls was just phenomenal.
So we were in celebration mode and we were just hoping for the best tonight.
Angela, you came on during our Football Fridays in Georgia when we did a question from the Georgia graduation test.
We have another question for today.
And it's no, your exotic breed of dog.
And so you've got to tell us about which is the that is the exotic breed.
That dog has been bred to be fiercely protective and confident.
It has a thick white coat that helps the dogs blend in with the sheep because it is a block protector.
So is it A, B or C that breed of dog?
I have no idea, but I'm going to choose C common door.
You are correct.
Wow.
It looks more like a mop to me.
But you are right.
So that is a common door.
So way to go.
You know your exotic breed of dog.
Thank you.
All right, Now I'm now to go over to Jacki Britton and check in with what folks are talking about chatting about on the World Wide Web.
Jacki, Thanks, Mark.
Hi, everyone.
I will be your social media correspondent throughout today's championship coverage.
And we want you guys to keep chatting with us online at GPB dot org slash sports.
I'm going to have it streaming live all day long.
Chime and tell me who your favorite players are.
Tell me who you think is going to win the matchup today.
We've got that covered for you now.
Also, don't forget to cast your vote on our online poll.
The question is about the AJC dunk contest.
We want to hear from you.
Do you think the AJC don't contest is really just a popularity contest or are the winners accurately judged solely on performance right now?
Still, a whopping 71% of you say it's just a popularity contest.
All right.
Now stay in your seats because we will have the dunking exhibition coming up here on GPB at the five boys game during halftime.
So be sure and catch all of that action.
Mark, right now, we'll send it back over to you.
All right, Jacqui, thanks so much.
Time now to welcome into the program.
The principal for Miller High School, Matthew Priester.
And Matthew, we talked to you before.
You guys have a state championship now.
The girls won.
What's going on in the in the fan base over there in the stands?
Well, giving credit to the coaches and the players, the journey was long and hard.
I think it is that first championship, this school for the existence of the program.
The fans are excited which is happy to be here giving credit to the Southwest.
The Cap girls, they are reigning champions from previous years.
They have three state champions on their belt.
So they were very worthy opponent and they were test worthy for our program and we appreciate them.
What would it mean to you as principal end of the student body to pull off the daily double to win the Boys and the Girls State championships tonight?
It'll be sweet.
It will be sweet.
We'll be good for the school.
The morale, the spirit, the program as a whole.
And, you know, if we continue to play hard, I think we'll be able to do that.
And again, Southwest Cab is a worthy opponent and we're going to have to work hard and pay for assistant if we want to win this game.
All right.
32, 29 right now.
Time now to play.
Do you know your exotic breed of dog?
So we've got this looking up for you and your clues are it's known for the distinctive wrinkly features, its blue black tongue and it comes from China.
Is that a, B, or C, O?
Got the last question wrong.
I'm going to say a a Sharpay.
You're right.
All right.
All right.
Breed of dog.
Way to go.
All right.
Good luck in the second half.
Thank you.
What happens?
32, 29.
Right now, Miller Grove is leading in the boys class for a state championship.
We'll be back with more on our APB halftime show right after this Time out.
Stay with.
Great.
Thank you very much.
We are getting ready for the second half of the boys for a state championship here on GPB Miller Grove in southwest DeKalb.
Time now to send it back over to the broadcast booth.
Gil Tyree and Herb White guys.
All right, Marky Mark, thank you.
When we take a look at the halftime right now, Herb White and, you know, we take a look at the highlights, but all about Tony Parker from Milagro, 16 points.
He's right about it this season average and you take a look at early on whether it was Jordan Price driving the baseline George Price again with the banker from out front didn't call it but he got it to go down Jack Goodwin and this is where Southwest Cab is staying in this ballgame is on the offensive boards.
And you're going to see Evans, who I think is a wonderful athlete, and then the bust out to Parker and then Parker again.
And like I said, 16 points right at his average right now.
And then the spin of Glass.
Let's go over now to our Lindsey theory, standing by with these Dewayne McKinney, all yours Lindsey coach changes up your defensive schemes a little bit.
Can you talk about why you started with a different defense?
well, I know that the little point guard is the heart and soul of that basketball team, and we feel like we can take them out of the game.
We'll be in a good situation.
We have to do a better job of rebounding the basketball.
We're getting the looks that we want from them.
We have to rebound the basketball in the second half.
How do you stop Tony Parker?
There's no stopping this kid.
He's a McDonald's all-American.
Thanks, Coach.
Thank you.
Thank you, Lindsey.
And thank you, Coach McKinney.
Take a look at the stats right now.
What jumps out out here?
What?
Well, southwest to camp again is is getting a lot of shots because of their offensive rebounding.
That's not the free throws you see on your screen there.
I imagine that is the field goal percent field goals for each team.
So rebound.
Yeah that's backwards on the free throws and field goal So you see that not many free throws by either team just a piece so the referees are letting them play.
And of course we did see Shaq Goodwin picked up his second foul, but he managed to play the rest of that half without picking up his third foul.
He was lucky.
He almost got one right at the end.
So that's very good for Southwest to care.
But they've got to find a way, I think maybe trying to front Tony Parker with somebody, maybe Shaq in front of him and somebody else behind might work.
But of course, Miller Grove has seen it all this year with people trying to stop him.
So it's very difficult, no question about it.
And our outstanding statistician, Kevin Barnes, tells us that Miller Grove hit one out of their last six Southwest to cap hits two out of their last seven.
But, you know, I want to touch on I want to piggyback on what you said about the fact that the lack of free throws in this basketball game.
You had talked about it at halftime and you said, Gil, I'm very surprised at this.
Yeah, well, I was expecting a little more of a slowdown game and a little more packet inside where you might see some more free throws, but that's great.
Let them play, let the athletes decide it.
And we're starting another great ballgame in the second half right now.
Christian Houston over the Colvin back to Mars down low to Evans, who struggles with it and they get Turner on the reach.
But you heard Coach McKinney talk to Lindsey theory about the the ability of Christian Houston to be able to do what he's been able to do.
And that's controlled tempo and pretty much dictate how MG is going to play.
And thus Miller Grove up by 332 to 29, started the third quarter here that is Houston over to Mars working against price crosscourt to Calvin, the entry pass to Parker who struggles with it and partially blocked and pushed down and it looks like they got number two Shaq Goodwin on the foul Take a look at the replay Hawaii Well you can't come down that hard on the offensive player They're going to call it just about every time and that's Goodwin's third and Tony Parker will go to the line to increase his game total right now, a game high 16.
He can add on to that first one.
No good.
Well, Shaq was trying to three quarter Tony in the low post then and I think that's the way they have to play him.
But you got to get some outside help you got no offside help and when Tony got the edge, he just took it to the basket.
So you got to have somebody coming from the offside to give you a hand there.
Parker, the senior and of course the wonderful interview we did with him on the GPB sports blog.
You can go on to WWE, dot, GP, dot org in Sherman Way, talk about what it would mean to the school to win a fourth championship.
And right now they are about a quarter of the way and up by four and they get the turnover that's Morris ahead but it's blocked by Turner.
We're going the other way the Panthers two on one Turner to the rack lays it up no good partially blocked shot Goodwin with it up and in and count Well that's where Shaq's doing his damage You got to give him credit he's staying on the backboards and getting the stick back.
Turner might throw the lob on that two on one break.
That's what I have done.
Look at the acceleration by Turner just could not get enough over but the big fella is there to clean it up.
Number two on the line with a chance to complete a three point play and he does that And right now the Panthers have drawn within 1704 in the third quarter.
Well, let's watch and see now if they go back to Tony Parker with three fouls on Shaq.
Goga Miller.
Ah Morris has got to get over and give him some help on Tony Parker.
Houston across the time line, guarded by Holman still out there It's Houston over on the right side to Morris Look inside low to Evans back Holman over to Calvin back outside the Houston Houston over to Morris Down Low bounce pass stolen away by Southwest the cap price with it across the time line drives backs out goes off the glass and puts it in Has it great put him to sleep with an offensive move looked like he was going to back it out of their deal and then he just took it on up to the rack and kissed itself off the glass rice with 12 and with that basket South wants to carve up with a one point lead at 3433 Houston trouble over on Coleman spots up a three ball and the rebound fought for and pushed out of bounds.
And take a look at price right here here boy now watch.
And they just had a little hesitation just to make the defense let up for half a second.
That's all he needed for his first 3433 and a timeout taken.
And you see Coach White on the sidelines giving Brandon Morris an earful.
Let's take a look at the Miller Grove resume And of course, you see what they've done now.
Outstanding resume.
American freshman, fifth final for her.
Boy, how does that rank you, historian?
You?
Well, it's only two teams that have won it four times, as we talked about earlier.
And not many people win it three.
So just a great job by Miller Grove, but it's going to be a while before they decide they're going to win their fourth game.
Southwest southwestern camp came out in the second half and they're doing what they need to do.
Got some stats for me, big fella.
Yep.
Southwest Cab, two for three here in the beginning of the second half, Miller Grove over two in there.
Managed to steal the ball from Tony Parker on that last play.
I'll tell you what, I've been real impressed with Jordan Price.
And of course, he's headed over to the Plains and will go over to Auburn, play for Coach Barbee.
It's price spotting up again, end of glass and a rebound and going up strong with it.
There's number four That's Justin Holiday and we have a whistle for that.
But you know, you touched on it earlier.
You said that Southwest, the Cavs ability to rebound has kept them in this boardroom in terms of, you know, second shot opportunities.
We've seen that all game long this fall.
I think Shaq Gilbert probably has six or seven offensive rebounds himself and probably three or four stick back.
So that has kept him in the ballgame.
But Tony Parker called for the foul and negotiating to is just in Hollywood and the Panther lead swells to 3 to 532 to go in the third quarter.
That's Kobe over to Houston.
They go down low and throwing up a shot and going off glass for Malik Roll was Devonte Provost That'll make it 3635.
Now I'd like to see those guys use the glass especially inside lineup for for a miller grove right now provokes Houston Parker Evans and Culver and the ball stolen away They're headed over here It's rebound in control but out of bounds and Miller Grove will take over and go the other way.
I need to correct myself Gil which I can't do all the time because I do it too much.
But I was talking about you had to have Brandon Morris helping out against Shaq a minute ago.
And of course Brandon plays on the same thing with Shaq, but it's gravy on Bell, it's on the offside at six seven, so he needs to pay attention when Shaq Goodwin is fronting down there, Tony, like he is right now.
Holman in, Holman Out I should say Raven Bell in for Southwest The cat going all the way right now that's Turner he drives launches up one called glass he gets it the ability of Turner just to go to the rack that's a great look back to Darius right there Took his time didn't rush it, kissed it softly off the glass, right off face up on the basket, which was tough to do.
Houston across the timeline, over to Colvin, to Houston, back over to Hammer.
Kyrie Hammer in the ballgame.
I stand corrected to Parker spot up jumper from about 14.
No good shot.
Good one The rebound for Southwest the Cavs were going the other way.
Turner's going to slow it down and back it out Southwest to cab up by three Hurt.
Well if there's a shot you want Tony Parker to take that 17 footer to one you do want him to take you Turner The high lob inside to Goodwin back it up goes down low to price spin move and we have a whistle and a foul and the foul is on Coleman That's his first on the floor.
Price is a very aggressive low post player I'd like to see him work down there It's a timeout with the score Southwest the Cavs 38 Miller Grove 35/3 quarter action continues here in and loop the four eight boys state title game on the line.
We'll be right back after these very important messages on the great GPB it's year two of GPB sports football Fridays in the great state of Georgia, bigger and better than ever.

And of course, we're getting ready for the upcoming season to bring it right here on GPB.
And the bigger and better.
And you know, there is there's something to be said like you and like I said, they don't get enough credit for your passion.
And I get along with Doc Swearengen for what you do.
John Nelson as well.
I said if there was going to be a mount Rushmore for a high school sports here in the great state of Georgia, you four would be on it.
Okay, well, how about you guys?
You bleed it, you talk it, you care about the kids and our executive producer and, of course, Bob Ramsey, John Sheridan, Jay Rosenberg.
Everybody cares about high school athletics in the great state of Georgia.
We're so proud.
Well, the great news is we just signed a new five year contract with the High School Association.
So we're going to be doing this for a long time to come.
Gil and the new blood you guys have brought in in the last year or so has really stepped it up and made things even better than they were before.
And we appreciate it.
Well, it's it's a joy and a very calm state to say that and up in in its price of class.
And that's going to increase the southwest.
The cap lead to five at 4235 321 here in the third quarter.
Miller Grove on the ropes right now.
Houston, it took the net zone Southwest, the Cavs season opening goes inside Evans on the jump ball only a smart play by Evans He saw Shaq Goodwin was going to stay with Tony so he just took it in the lane himself and laid it the little four foot teardrop nice cut by Evans and that'll make it 40 to 37.
Miller Grove draws with him three the high lob into the big fella and he couldn't handle those two man game work They're trying to work their between Price and Goodwin and they were not able to negotiate it Miller Grove across the time line the basketball and that's Houston Houston on the right side to Morris top deep up top the Houston looking Morris on the alley oop but he's not there and they go baseline on the cut to Mars the ball kicked out of bounds so the Wolverines will regain possession That's provost on the inbounds provost in Houston along with Evans Morris and Parker for Miller Groves spot up three no go to airball the rebound control by Brice numbers headed to Harvard you're right four and one Shaq on the trail up and good and telling you that's the way you run the floor the big fella follow behind and like you said they had number two, four and one and they were able to convert Herb White take a stroll.
Here we see it.
Watch Jordan Price.
Now he just stays under control and gives the nice dish.
Got the big guy running.
He knows he's going to put it home.
And that's off the break in transition.
Look at Pryce.
Run in the break and the big fella gets rewarded.
How about that?
The deuce is wide and he gets an and 142 now 43 to 37, a six point lead by Southwest the Cavs Dwayne McKinney and company trying to pull the upset here Morris at zone given Miller Groves some problems there packing it back in there now almost daring Miller Grove to shoot the three the Panthers right now on a 14 four run thanks to our statistician Kevin Barnes.
Houston the dump down to two.
Evans They back it to Houston over to Calvin wants to take it three decides better of it tries to get down low goes baseline and forces one up and in as Evans They used every bit of that possession small play by Shaq going again not to pick up that fourth foul as he let the player go ahead and score more important to have him in the game Gil Southwest the Cavs lead now down to four and 4930 4339 third quarter under two here and Duluth.
That's a spot up three by price no good And the rebound fought for taken down by Miller Groves calls it ahead to Houston.
They're pushing it as Miller Grove that's called the dump down to Evans who does the finger roll but it doesn't go and check good one with the rebound the outlet to Turner one in the break right now over the price to trail off glass no good Parker with the rebound the outlet to Houston he got numbers and a great block by by Shaq Goodwin my goodness Well they may be calling in flagrant foul Shaq went up after that one pretty well it was he hit him He went after the ball.
But I'm afraid that official may have.
But they did call that they count two fouls.
Herb White, take us through tell our audience what this is all about.
Well, here you go.
Shaq going up.
It's a clean play, number one up, trying to get the ball.
The fans didn't like it.
The offensive player was off balance.
Guillen just came down.
But see what they're calling here.
That's the fourth on Shaq.
One more look, Herbalife, tell us.
Well, that's nothing wrong with that play.
He just went up, tried to block the ball probably too hard.
It wasn't smart because that's going to draw the officials attention.
But they're calling the flagrant foul.
The flagrant is called Adelson Evans to the line.
Tony Evans, the first one up an end.
Well, I don't agree with the called deal.
But you know, Shaq took a gamble there when he went after it that hard.
He knew that they're going to have to call that foul.
And he went after him so hard and the player came down off balance that they decided to call the flagrant.
And that hurts critical foul, too.
That's his fourth.
And he's going to sit.
You just saw him go to the bench.
Evans again in and out and was and also Miller Grove will regain possession with an opportunity to cut in to that Southwest.
The Cavs lead some of 4340 under a minute to go here in the third quarter in Duluth the for a boys title on the line at Houston over to Evans back out to Houston.
Houston for Miller Grove goes over on the right side to Morris to Colvin.
It's going to spot up for three come and just like that we are tied at 43 all under 46 to go in the third quarter.
Herb White Cross effort the cab just daring him to shoot that three they pack it in right in front of Tony and Coleman said, All right, you're going to give me a free one.
I'll take it.
Our fourth tie of what has been a phenomenal basketball game thus far.
Bounce pass the price working against Mars Shovel pass in.
And how was the campaign for way beyond Bell and the Southwest?
The Cavs said call a flagrant on that.
Yeah that was just as hard a lick right there and they're going to meet at the summit folks and I believe they're going to call a flagrant foul.
Unbelievable.
Wow.
Evans with the elbow and the forearm on Raytheon.
Bell And Bell misses the the first and he offered up another opportunity and the Panthers also regain possession get a shot of Sherman White of Lillard roll Wow well you can't blame the officials here really because they want to keep control of this game state championship game and they don't want it to get out of hand.
So Good Call it doing it both on both ends.
And Jordan Price trying to take over the game now for Southwest.
DeKalb really becoming aggressive on offense made a great play there they should do a review on Bell Devonte Provost in for Miller Grove and that's bell jump hook no good and quiet for the rebound still control the turnaround move off glass no good and Bell is there again and they're going on the floor with it.
Just a wild sequence.
Holliman had an opportunity he couldn't connect.
Bell tried to go up with it.
He couldn't connect.
And we're still tied 43, all under 3 seconds to go.
And the Panthers on the inbounds herb like some of that offensive board work.
But they threw up more prayers and a mormon congregation about 4 seconds price at the buzzer no go So we're locked in at 43 as we move to the fourth and final quarter here and what's a good in here at the arena and the win at center.
The four title on the line.
We'll be right back after these very important messages on the Greek Georgian up broadcasting we're not at up here at 43 southwest to Captain Miller Grove at stake, the class for a boys title here in the great state of Georgia.
And you can join in right now on the GPB sports chat during our game.

Let's hear from you, Georgia.
Let's hear from the United States and let's hear it from the world.
You know, son, Shaq Goodwin went out with foul trouble.
Herbalife, the guy who has carried it, is the Auburn bound Jordan Price.
And they're going to need, number one to step up huge here in the fourth quarter.
Yeah, you could see right away Jordan Price decided he's going to have to take it on his shoulders and a game of runs here in the second half self the cab came out decided they're going to stab a little dominance Miller Grove's gotten back into and it's just what we expected Gil he's the number one and he's launching three balls all over the place and.
I'm looking for Shaq to come back in between five and 6 minutes to go in this one, back to live action.
You see a stumbling, bumbling Tony Parker off balance and the foul right there was on the aforementioned Jordan Price.
And like I said, very impressed with this young man headed over to Auburn.
The part of that great program being assembled over there by Coach Barbee.
And what a job he's done.
Well, we'll see another Shaq or another a Shaq going to Auburn in the next ballgame.
Shaq Johnson, probably the best leaper maybe in the history of the state of Georgia.
High school basketball, first opportunity and second offered to name is Bob Parker.
The ball for for out of bounds and Morris was fighting for it Turner was over there but they'll give it to Southwest to get How long do you keep Shaq on the bench chuckling I'm saying I'm looking for him to come back in between five and 6 minutes to go.
I don't.
It just depends on what happens in the next minute.
So.
Right.
If you just don't, Is Shaq good one.
The outstanding big man for Southwest.
The cabin's been saddled with foul trouble right now at Ford and he's going to sit Coach McKinney has him on the bench right now.
James is tied up at 43, all 723 to go in the final period.
He plays over the right side spotting up for three ball and counting it right there is Justin Holloman give Jordan Price the dime Great assist Holman with ten 4043 the Panthers trying to get a historic first championship first time they've been in the state title game Southwest the Cavs Morris over on the right side to Houston over the left side they swing it to Colvin now the Houston bounce pass to Morris looking for Parker but he is gobbled up by that zone.
It's helpless.
The Cavs playing.
Turner forced a turnover and it was out of bounds off Coleman so Turner regains possession Great play by Mr. Turner I love this kid Can Darius Turner and I'll tell you what he's a major college talent.
It's a shame he's going to junior college.
Well, I mean, this kid to play for any program, I love the way he he is able to handle things for Coach McKinney, a fluid general extension of Coach McKinney out on that floor working against Houston.
You know, we talked about it early on, Herb, that the big men would cancel each other out and it would be the role players.
And that seems to be the way this is playing out right now.
One in particular place, driving to the rack and no good offensive foul to George and there's no doubt about that Colin Price trying to be a little too aggressive there.
But the last time down the floor you saw that southwest again here we'll see the replay on price.
Great call.
Evans was right there.
Tony Parker did not touch the ball last time down the floor for Miller Grove and Southwest Cab is really running him down low when he comes across a dead zone.
And Herb has talked about southwest the cab able to play all afternoon long steal by Turner off of Coleman who wasn't paying attention to the rack by mistake.
And following up Nelson is Holman Turner my goodness.
man.
How did that come out of there?
A lot of iron and it just dropped back off But a great play by King Darius Turner.
Let's take a look at this TURNER That's steal Calvin on the angle We see Holloman hitting right in there and trying to get the stick back, but to no avail.
Well, you got to try to get your feet under you.
Holloman tried to rush that one back up there.
Sure.
To take a little more time, but, boy, what a play back.
And Darius Turner again, the heart and soul of this team.
And he showed it right there.
And they will maintain possession in the bucket here is big deal and you see the time out right now.
MG Taking the time out, let's take a look at the Southwest cab resumé Herbalife.
You know the history of this school.
Well I know it.
Going back into the early sixties and mid-sixties, I played against Southwest.
I've always had great athletic teams there, had great basketball and football and baseball teams in my day and never been to a final in basketball, men's basketball.
So boys basketball.
So it's great for them to be here, of course.
But Godfrey had all those great football teams, Quincy Carter and those guys back in the nineties.
And so it's the three time state champs, of course, and Girls basketball and played for the state championship again this this afternoon.
Exactly.
And of course one of our dear friends coach one Cathy Walton one of my face I must say class is classic.
I mean, every time I go over there, she's always accessible, always willing to to go the extra mile and she cares about her young ladies.
And you saw that here today.
So they go down to to Miller Grove is a miller Grove ladies get it done.
That was out in the country when I used to play out there at Southwest, the Panthers railroad Herbalife.
They were listening to it because Shaq is back in the ballgame game.
He's out at the six minute mark.
Yep, I said between five and six.
And let's see how Smarty can play the rest of the way.
He certainly can't try to go after block like he did a few minutes ago.
A play on third turnover turns it over and gives it to Miller Grove across the time line.
Playing a two man game is Houston and Marks Houston against Southwest To cap play in that zone Houston will spot up and take a three ball count.
You're going to say listen again when knotted up again at 46.
All right now another time we're tied at the start of the fourth quarter at 43, we're now Todd right now at 46.
You see the time on the clock.
The pass intended for from Turner to to Shaq is not out of bounds.
And Shaq, Goodwin and Evans both went over there.
But that's will regain possession that's Shaq working baseline and pushed out of bounds you're going to say Evans got him by Evans at seventh third and Tony Evans can't believe that one thought he played some pretty good defense He had Shaq out of position up under the basket but the referee might have bailed them out on that one.
That's Evans is third and Miller grows 16 foul and the free throw numbers are not too good or of life.
Well Shaq's got a good stroke there.
Four for ten Southwest would have to see them.
All right He gets his 13 point and he'll try again.
They get it to the 14 point mark for him today and tie this game up again or put a two point lead.
Two point lead now by Southwest to cab 48 to 46 and Shaq's coming out of there.
They're going to play defense without him.
Not a bad move by Coach McKinney over there.
he feels like the Zone has given Milagros some problems and we'll stick with it and then preserve the big fella where need the most because he's in foul trouble for.
Well, let's see if they go to Tony Parker right now.
That's Houston over the the trip Parker spins hangs ball doesn't go rebound fourth quarter and controlled and on the floor for southwest to cap it was Raytheon Bell and underneath him was Evans and that's what happens when you get a ball stop that gives opportunity for Shaq Goodwin to get back in the ballgame.
So just what they wanted know if the alternating possession Southwest the Cavs will take over 4846 510 to go here and Duluth guilty reading and Herbalife still to come the five a girls championship game Jon Nelson and Sean Gordon are standing by.
We're glad to have you with us here on GPB this afternoon as we move our way into the evening.
And we got another great day of high school basketball on the great GPB tomorrow down in Macon Southwest.
The cab with the basketball that shot Good went up top and being harassed by heavens and the Panthers the timeout good job by Coach McKinney There you can see the Southwest cab was a little lost.
Didn't know exactly what it wanted to do.
Looked like they were going to play a two man game with Jordan Price and Shaq.
That didn't work.
And then Shaq stepped out and Coach McKinney said, I've seen enough.
Let's set something up here.
I'm going to put you in the huddles, both huddles right back.
On one side, of course, is Coach McKinney.
On the other side, Coach, what would Herbalife say to coach?
What what would he say to Coach McKinney right now?
I think I'd play some zone defense if I was Coach White right now.
And if I was Coach McKinney, I believe I'd give my man Jordan Price the ball in the side, try to give him an isolation.
So if he can't create something off the dribble.
Wonderful pictures by our great producer, Steve Graham.
And this is what they're playing for, folks.
You see the trophy and of course, the after the conclusion of this basketball game, we'll have the trophy presentation by Mark Harmon.
And of course, Doc Swearengen will be running things as we crown the second championship team on this day, on this Friday.
And what a day it's been so far.
Our first champion was familiar drove the girls Who's going to join them from the floor boys on the alley oop intended for him Price to Goodwin.
And it was not the way Turner regains possession for Swg they lead by 248 to 46.
You see that time on your clock?
Turner Stop and go.
Drives off blast partially blocked by Parker Miller Grove with it that's Evans ahead Banks it off no good partially blocked Parker with the rebound struggles up and in We're tied again 48 all under four to go price stops sends it down low for Justin Holliman and it's knocked out of bounds That's a great defensive play by Christian Houston.
He saved the bucket there and I believe Shaq Goodwin got a piece of that shot down on the other end.
And Tony Parker stayed with it, though, and knocked it down.
Turner on the inbounds and he throws it away.
Almost lost but regained by Raven Bell Raven Bell over to Turner to price working against Morris goes up ball is blocked by Morris on a great defensive play They're going to call the foul though they call him Morris might have got him with the body Herb what I want to take a look at this and see and you see reaction of Coach White Take a look at this.
Yeah, there was body contact, but it was created by the offensive player.
So I'm with Coach White on that one.
Little bit of a questionable call, but overall, a pretty good job by the officials in this ballgame.
It's a pretty aggressive game.
So they've had their hands for the fouls.
On Evans.
His third price will go to the line and he gives Southwest the cab the lead at 4948 under four here.
Penn State is going to walk it up.
That's Brandon Morris headed to the University of Georgia over the right side to Holloman.
Besides better and them taking it outside goes down low to the big fella Parker.
He misses it with a rebound Evans up and in partially blocked and no call and the rebound taken by Goodwin and we have a whistle for Shaq Goodwin A heck of a chance Then Gail came over the back to block that shot.
I thought for sure we're going to hear the whistle.
But they didn't call it.
And now he's going to be going to the free throw line.
But Herb, I can't say it enough.
You see the presence of the big fella right there?
Well, he did it without fouling.
I can't say it enough.
You called it.
You said rebounding was key to South was to get in this basketball game.
And we see the presence of Shaq Goodwin when he's there.
He misses the free throw Miller Grove the other way with it.
Morris backs it out to Houston.
Try to get that fifth foul on.
Goodwin wasn't able to do it as he backed into now they go down low to Parker.
The ball was blocked by price and we have whistle look like Morris got also poked in the eye on the follow up here Boy they are pretty good defense there by price you know slap that ball away Tony Parker before he could slam it down and now they're going to have to earn the bucket.
the points at the free throw line and that fouls on Goodwin and he's done he is done for the afternoon and that's a huge loss.
man, I didn't see that yet.
You're right.
He got him over the top.
They didn't call the initial one, but they got him over the top on right there and he got poked in the eye.
Well, it's going to be a chore now for Southwest to care, but they've got Jordan Price who can score.
They've got Kadarius Turner, who's a heck of a competitor, and they've got Raven Bell is still six seven inside, so they've still got some weapons.
But it's going to be on defense where they're going to have their main problems drill.
So at the 313 mark of this basketball game, Williams shot Goodwin, who you see right there, has fouled out and but Coach McKinney has been able to get around that because Goodwin started out in foul trouble.
And that's pretty much been a constant theme throughout this basketball game for.
So right now, like you said, the zone has been effective.
Well They're definitely going to have to stay in the zone.
There's no way they can handle Tony Parker without.
And this is where it's going to hurt Shaq, who had a good second half, especially on the boards.
But they've been able to score without Shaq doing much scoring through the whole ball game.
It's been on defense where they're going to really have to pay the price right now.
So what's up?
What's the cap will do is they'll go small and inserting in there the game right now is the nurse who comes in the basketball game number 55, Rashad Goodwin.
So we go with the lineup right now of Bryce Turner.
Also in the game, Nurse Ryan Bell.
And also over there is Holloman.
That's your lineup for Southwest.
You can on the line right now is Brandon Myers the first opportunity up and in and we're tied right now that'll make it a 4949 ballgame this one to give Miller Grove the lead with 313 to go the state championship and four on the line here Great crowd at the raining at the arena at the goodnight Center are you got to get good looks now girl every time down because it's 3 minutes to play and you know Miller Grove's is going to get good looks with Tony Parker inside Turner working against Houston 50 to 49 Miller Grove up in front Turner to penetration stops pulls up no good Morris with the rebound for Miller roll out to Houston He's got to slow it up and walk it up and kind of jog it up.
He's across the timeline right now.
Over to Morris working against Bell, back out to Houston over the Morris 231 in this basketball game.
Herb Rosario's Cavs going to have to extend that zone.
Now being down, that's going to open up the middle.
You saw the opening and Houston able to see it and passing off to Mars.
It was foul and it'll go to the line again.
See the replay.
Herbalife.
Well, there you see it.
Southwest.
The cab had to go out there down they had to go out and extend the zone and that allowed Christian to take it to the basket and I got to get it in.
Jordan Price's down on the other end.
Treveon Bell on the foul his first on the afternoon of the first opportunity by Morris does not connect with coming in the ballgame for Southwest the cap is Kenneth Louis and he will replace Raven Bell good time out by Coach McKinney.
He knows he's got to get some points coming down here on the other end.
He's going to set up something so I look for Jordan Price, maybe go one on one or try to play a little two man basketball with a pick high for Jordan Price.
And as Hearn talked about, these two, these two teams have battled three times this year, all three games won by Miller Grove.
And we talked about it up.
We had a chance to visit with Coach White and we discussed that and he said, Gil, throw it out the window.
As you see our Lindsey Thiry, who's speaking in over in the Southwest, the Cavs sidelines, of course, he's getting the up to date information on what Coach McKinney is going to try to do his strategy as they move forward with 222 left in this basketball game and the Panthers down one hurts.
Well, I'm sure Coach White is looking for members of the southwestern camp also to be looking for Jordan Price to try to create something.
So they're probably to be key in on that.
Kadarius Turner has had a couple of nice drives to the basket, but he's only about five eight going in there and it's awful tough with Tony Parker and Brandon Morris around the hoop.
So it's going to be interesting to see after this free throw what occurs.
And of course, Brandon Morris going to the University of Georgia and many speculate that the Tony Parker may follow at least to a very tight end.
Georgia, make it a last push in the recruiting.
Be still my beating heart.
But wouldn't that be a gift for the University of Georgia Morris fails to negotiate.
So the Miller Grove lead stands in one turn.
It goes across the time line, drives against Houston, forces up a no good Parker taps it, gets the rebound and hits that he is hacked and he'll go to the line for two opportunities.
But Turner take it to the hoop.
But it's just a tall order for him to go in there and get those shots.
The fall amongst those trees.
And Jordan Price has just got to assert himself.
I know they're going to be looking for him to get the ball, but he's got the size and the strength to go in there and maybe pick up the foul if he doesn't get it to go down.
So I was on here, Nurse who came in, Coach McKinney brought him in to, replace Shaq Goodwin.
So Tony Parker all the way, unless we upset our jacket.
Friends, yellow jacket, friends.
Gill You and I talked about a player, their side and because we've been talking about people going to Auburn and other places.
But Marcus Hunt, a guy that impressed both of us, is going to Georgia Tech, and he's a heck of a player.
He is a very, very good player.
Miller Grove lead up now by 352 to 49, approaching the two minute mark.
Got to have points here.
Gil Turner, that's Bryce stopping and pop and working against Provost and we have a whistle as Bryce goes inside and a foul, they spot the foul and that'll be provost for Miller Road.
Boy, that's a tall order for Jordan Price because knows they are key in on him and they had three people come out and help him correct that That's not provost he tried to but it's on Culver I think they spotted Calvin the foul so Brendan Morris leaves the basketball game and Evans comes in.
That may have been Owen Morris and he's fouled out.
Well that's big.
I stand corrected.
Morris is a great creator and you can find people open in huge free throws right now.
See the numbers to Jordan Price with and 52 to 49 right now two two to go Miller Grove looking for that fourth consecutive championship Tony Parker told me he said Mr. Tyree we want to try it.
I got the I got everybody a championship as a senior.
Now my opportunity to get myself one, you got to get there but you're about a minute 33 away from doing that.
Well, tell his cap need to stop.
Not a bad foul though.
They need to get the ball back as well and put him on the free throw line minute 33 to go And Houston, Christian Houston will be at the line trying to find percentages on here.
But it doesn't really matter now at this time of the game, you can throw the percentages out as far as what he's been shoot and let's see what he can do with all the pressure in the world on him.
It's a soft kiss and he rolls well, it's a two possession ballgame now, Gil.
Yes, sir.
You don't have to go for the three when you come down southwest of Kansas.
Needs to come down and get a good look.
They need to come away with points, though.
Houston, 77% from the line.
Second one up and good.
Now don't make it a five point lead right?
44 to 49 and then a 28 to go the Wolverines with Miller roll but up jumper by price no good the rebound taken down by Parker they had a wide open I mean a wide open throw those they could throw a touchdown to him and they would have laid it up and in a very kind of sense right now.
But no grills since his victory.
Well, it's desperation time.
Jordan Price is having to try to do it one on one on his own.
And Tony Parker's just camped under the basket and he's going to get everything that misses.
So it's a real tough situation for Southwest again.
And if this does come to fruition, it's victory.
Miller Grove is going back with two championships, two state championships they're going to have.
That's going to be a really nice December 1st one up here in by Posey.
That'll make it a six point lead right down 55 to 49.
Well, now you do think about coming down and maybe taking the three, even though Southwest Cab has not been draining many outside shots tonight.
But they've got to score in a hurry.
Whether it is a two or three over makes the second.
It's now 56 to 49 and Miller Road leads by 756 to 49.
And then at 18 to go.
Well, the story of this win is Shaq Goodwin in foul, no doubt about it.
But you got to give credit that to Tony Parker because he creates those things inside.
And then I know at least two of Shaq's fouls came against Tony Parker, but it just it's tough to play in a high school game that's this physical and this athletic when you when you got three or four fouls.
John Nelson and Sean Golden getting ready to call that girl's five a state championship game.
Do you like another two toss up for me?
How about you?
I like the teacher.
All right.
You know, I thought they got the nice win over Norcross and my one of my buddies, Ken Rodriguez, over at Fox five.
He's a McEachin alum.
He said, Gill, make sure you don't talk about him, so I'll talk about it.
They may have an opportunity tonight.
Let's turn to spotting on the miss and the rebound control by Coleman and a whistle and he'll go to the line.
And here we go again.
A parade to the line.
Well, if he hit the boys, they make two here, it'll be about time they collected him.
Looks really fortunate to be over.
But I'll tell you what, Joe, this has been a heck of a ballgame.
And Shaq Goodwin stays in the game.
This one goes right down to the wire, no doubt about it.
And like I said, John Nelson and Shawn Golden standing by.
They will do the five girls title game and then yours truly and Herb White will return for the five day battle between Savannah and Milton.
And that's a tip time, approximate tip time at about 845.
And we go down to tomorrow and we kick things off at 11 a.m.. Breakfast with the gang from GPB.
More hoops as we do our thing here in the great state of Georgia, 57 of 49 approaching the a minute mark Price over to Turner.
He'll launch a three and gets it and up just like that WB goes a time out as they bring bigger cut the lead to five right it's a two possession game you got 57 seconds to go so stranger things have happened and a great job there by Jordan Price to find Kadarius Turner in the corner and pretty good looking stroke by the young man so you're going to try to play some defense tough bringing as Miller Grove brings the ball up the floor.
I say you play you know, eight or 10 seconds, maybe trying to go for the steal, but you can't wait much longer and then you're going to have to foul.
And also, we want to remind everybody, the wheelchair basketball game, the state championship here, the great state of Georgia, will air at 9 a.m.. Fletcher Proctor and Company will be doing that.
And of course, that'll be here on GPB and and a slam dunk will take place And you know I'll tell you what, we've got so much stuff going on.
We get we get the job done here.
Get GPB.
Say they let me throw my crutches over to the side and get the wheelchair game.
There you go.
GPB Sports Mark Harmon will be at center court during halftime of a five boys game with three top dunkers in the great state of Georgia.
He's been voted the best rim rockers in town.
You voted online.
Now you can see him live in game action with their eyes flying dunks.
It's the GPB sports AJC slam dunk contest at halftime of the five a boys game, part of our exclusive coverage here on GPB, it'll be about a 9:30 p.m. time for that the inbounds right now and of course the foul 57 to 52 for Willow Grove will again it's been a parade to the free throw line late and Shaq Goodwin will be in at the slam dunk contest You see the big fella found out about it the 313 mark and they've missed him big time and of course he'll go over to play for one of my dear, dear friends, Josh Pastner.
I had a chance to cover Josh when he played at the University of Arizona.
And did you know he instructed Mike Bibby how to shoot free throws, I think.
Yeah, that's what I played for a little something company and one of the best recruiters in the country and really has gotten that program on track since John Calipari left to go to the University of Kentucky.
But that's where Shaq Goodwin will hang out and go for the best years of his life when he closes out of high school career at Southwest.
Again, the Miss by Houston made the quick three.
It's a two possession game.
There it is.
And of course, Lewis will launch it.
Three no good but for up it is almost by nurse and over the top was Tony Parker and they almost got the three the old fashioned way if he could make the free throw nurse pretty good looking ball player there.
I'm surprised we didn't see some more of him early.
That's Tony Parker, as I'm told by statistician Kevin Barnes.
It's his third and nurse will make the first and in for the ball game.
In the ball game from selfless to cap Malcolm battle comes in and also Emmanuel Walker comes in for coach opportunities Bucks nurse up the line second is no good rebound control by Evans of Miller Grove Houston is tied up and a foul was called on the play so we'll go the other way and Christian Houston at the line a 77% free throw percentage at the line we'll go and try to knock down some more I'm sure if you ask Shaq Goodwin if he'd rather in the slam dunk championship or the fourth championship he'd go with the four eight championship.
But it doesn't look like it's going to be unless Christian Houston misses a couple Jordan Jordan Price or the foul Houston was his up and in at will make it a six point lead and like Herb said 2.22 possession game.
You count in the ability to knock down a three another look at Shaq Goodwin of course will participate in the slam dunk contest that was sponsored by GPB and the AJC.
We'll see it right here exclusively on the home of high school sports in the great state of Georgia, Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Well, that's the killer free throw right there.
6253 TURNER What's the time line spot?
The three ball will be placed no good rebound control and by south what's the camp up and in and count it That's Holliman and he'll have a chance to make it a three point play Well not done yet Take a look at the replay here.
Boy, this time and going up strong, kissing it off the glass in the same way.
South west can't stayed in this game all night with offensive rebounding.
But great is too little too late.
But if he makes this they've got to foul right away.
It's going to be a long 35 seconds.
It's the long already.
Parker with the rebound over the Houston ball and he's trapped gets it all steal and they get the steal but they get it right back and then the foul over the top and it looks like they're going to get nurse coming over the top of Bogie and Coleman will go to the line and like you said her.
But sometimes these situations late game take an eternity.
Well, there's been all kinds of discussion about how to try to end this by, you know, giving the team the ball out of bounds at the rim if they don't want to shoot the free throws and all types of options.
But they haven't come up with anything better.
So you just have to suffer through the last 30, 40 seconds of ballgames like this at the free throw line.
But we see a lot of strange things happen all the time solving up an end that'll make it 61 to 6528 ticks to go Calvin with 13 points on the afternoon and early evening just a reminder, at the conclusion of this basketball game, we'll have the the trophy presentation with our Mark Harmon and the Georgia High School Association executive director Dr. Ralph Swenson.
Of course, Jackie Burton will be around and our guests and thousands here, the great people who bring you high school athletics at its best, the great GPB falling away for three hits.
TURNER He misses it.
They back it out again.
They're going to launch another three.
And that is no good.
The airball on the attempt by Kenneth Lewis and another foul.
And again, another parade for the charity Stroke for Miller Grove's going to wrap up the girls and boys for a championship this year and that's pretty impressive.
Very impressive.
Very impressive.
And you got to feel bad for Southwest champs in both championships and you also feel bad because it's a senior laden team and a lot of these guys we're talking about early to Darius Turner and Jordan Price and have played together for such a long time and had their sights set on winning a championship and they've sure given it a good run.
Sherman White tells Renee Breedlove, Move over, I'm coming over.
I'm going to be part of this championship tour in the Miller Grove, and they're going to empty the bench right now and a class move.
Tony the hub with Coach White.
And like I said, going line right now a GPB.
Talk to the GPB sports blog and you'll see the interview that we did that Coach White and Tony Parker.
In fact, Coach White tweeted me last night and tweeted all out.
They talk about their mission of winning a state championship and what it would mean.
That's w w w that GPB dawg.
Check it out.
And I go to our GPB sports blog and you'll see it right there.
Well, they make history tonight as a third team in the history of Georgia basketball to win four consecutive state championships.
And it let's it's even harder these days probably than it used to be with all the great talent in this state.
And it's ejected southwest a cab bench.
They have nothing to be ashamed of.
They came and they gave it everything they had, but they just fall short, a three ball up and no good nurse with the rebound is going to back out with the jump.
Looking at towns and that'll be our final basket and that's the score and how it ends up 63 to 57 and let the celebration begin at.
Miller Grove The girls get it done and now the boys, the fourth straight time, you've see Tony Parker going Miller Grove Nation, they've accomplished it and they are in the history books here.
Boy, Yes, they are.
And it's been a pleasure to stay.
I've been involved in every ball game and Tony Parker has gotten better every year.
And Miller Grove, this may be their best team.
They played all over the country this year and that really made him an experienced, seasoned veteran ball club.
They probably played a third of their games against some of the best teams in the country.
Well, all that's left for Tony Parker now is where is he going to end up?
Will it be Kansas?
Will it be UCLA, Will it be Duke or will it be Georgia?
Will it be Ohio State?
But he's a state champion here this afternoon.
Late defeat Southwest.
The cab.
And you saw it right here on GPB Moore from Duluth after these very important messages on GPB Miller Grove your class for a boys state champions and back here in Duluth and of course the Miller Grove has been crowned the champion.
The girls won it earlier.
The boys do it just moments ago.
They beat Southwest The Gap and of course, everything Tony Parker does, Herbalife, it turns to gold.
Let's take you back.
When this thing first started, we'd have a miller Grove flashback and it was Tony Parker.
Take us through Herbalife.
Well, here you go.
And Dante Williams also.
There you see him right in the middle of your picture.
Now, University of Georgia basketball player and doing very well down at UGA.
But Tony Parker gets his start here and and the Tony Parker era started at Miller Grove and it concludes with another state championship and of course their fourth unprecedented here in the great state of Georgia.
Let's go over now to our colleague here at GPB.
Mark Harmon.
Marky Mark, it's all yours.
HILL Thank you very much.
Time now to award to Miller Grove for the fourth consecutive year, the class for a state championship.
And with that, we have Ernie Yarbrough with the essay.
First, congratulations, Coach White and Miller and we're pleased to have Georgia Farm Bureau is our presenting sponsors.
So, Coach, do you want to come up, receive your trophies with, your seniors?
Coach, hold that trophy up high.
Hold it up high.
Yeah.
Coach Armond White talk, what, four in a row.
Only Westover has won four in the boys classification.
You become the next team to win four in a row.
First of all, we just got to give all thanks to God.
He blessed these guys and kept them together.
Made them some high character kids who believed and bought into what we were trying to do and they just were sold out to.
And they've worked hard from day one.
And I tell people all the time, You can't win a championship without championship people.
And these guys behind me are championship people and it show throughout this whole run, I'm so proud of them.
I couldn't be more ecstatic and more happy in anybody.
All right.
Let's talk to Big Tony Parker.
What's this mean to you?
You've been out for four straight years, been a part of this team.
You've seen seniors win, seniors win, seniors win.
Finally, you're a senior and you win.
It was a great feeling.
We kept praying all year.
My teammates stayed with me.
I graduated every senior I've played with, including with a state ring and just to God, be glory.
Thank you, Jesus.
Any idea where you're heading next year yet?
I don't know yet, but it'll be someplace great.
All right, let's talk to Christian Houston.
Christian.
Talk a little about this senior class and going out on top.
Well, we've been together for a long time.
We've got a lot of chemistry.
But the road being hard and all.
But we came together today and pulled it off.
All right, Christian Houston or Christian?
Brandon Morris, get over here real quick.
Brandon Talk a little bit about winning this one as a senior and going out on top.
Man, this was the best one, man.
This is great right here, man.
We had to face a lot of adversity throughout the season.
And this suite is one.
Everybody doubted us, man.
We start to and we had our backs.
Coach Harmon.
Why?
It is a great night for Miller Grove.
The boys and the girls both with championships.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
And I just want to say thanks to my wife, my newborn son, Zion.
I just love my family.
Some money.
I'm just crazy about them.
And they give me all the things I need to be able to do what I do with these young guys because it's just a ministry and I love to do it and I want to thank them.
All right.
Miller Grove wins the first time for the girls, the fourth time in a row for boys.
Now it's time for the JB Tailgate party.
My bag is right there.
All right.
Congratulations again to Miller Grove on that state championship win.
Let's kick things off for the tailgate party with a little bit of our social media.
We've been taking votes all day long at GPB Dawgs Sports, where you guys have been chatting and and polling and we have some of those results.
Let's get to the question first.
Do you guys think that the AJC Dunk contest is really just a popularity contest or are the winners accurately judged solely on performance?
Still, a whopping 71% of you think that it's just a popularity contest.
Only 29 say that it's actually judged based off of performance.
Keep voting at GPB Dawgs Sports.
And also, don't forget that later on this evening we will have the slam dunk exhibition.
And that's something that you definitely don't want to miss out on.
So we'll be doing all of that and we'll have a couple of interviews with a couple of principals and a lot more coming up.
You don't want to miss out, especially on the slam dunk contest.
And we will have more of that coming up.
And then we are going to give it back to our great charming Mark Harmon.
Mark, it's good to see you again.
Good job out there on the trophy presentation, man.
It's good to be here.
What a night for Miller Grove.
I know twice in a row.
And then there's knocking it out.
Well, we'll see what's going to happen because we're moving into the five a classification coming up next.
But this weekend, GPB is the home of 11 state basketball.
But coming up this fall, it's going to be another big season of high school football right here on the great GPB.
Our pigskin action kicks off with the quirky Cal classic.
All right.
For the second year in a row, GPB Sports will proudly bring you every pass, run, block and tackle as the 2012 Georgia high school football season kicks off in the Georgia Dome with the 21st annual Corky Cal Classic, the classic big game way back in 1991.
But the honor of longtime coach and athletic director Corky Kelley and this season opening extravaganza of punts, passes and kicks is the perfect way to begin the bright and early at 9 a.m., the Cal Longhorns out of Pop County will host the 2010 four state champion Chattahoochee Cougars at 1145, defending state five eight champions the Grayson Rams, with their outstanding two way player Robert Kemp, will take on the McEachern Indians.
The third game of the day will be a rematch of the Class five, a semifinals for the Bulldogs of North Gwinnett battling Southern powerhouse the Packers of Colquitt County.
Then another big time Southern program will journey north for Game four as the Camden County Wildcats attempt to maul the lions of Peachtree Ridge.
Then, the prime time action is the 2010 state five eight champion Brookwood Broncos and last year's Class five eight runner up Walton Raiders Vie for Supremacy.
Don't miss the 21st Cooky cult classic starting at 9 a.m. right here on the great GPB.
All right.
And as we get ready for the girls five, a state championship game between undefeated and top ranked McEachern and Hillgrove, we welcome to the program.
The executive director of the Kornegay Call, a classic long time football coach and GPB broadcaster, I might add, Dave Hunter.
Dave, good to have you here.
Thank you.
I'm glad to be here.
So great.
Another great event.
It's a hoops desert kind of night, but we're going to talk pigskin action.
Talk a little about the quirky cal you're expanding now from four games to five games.
Well, we wanted to make a better event.
We wanted more teams in it, make a little bit of a better day for everyone.
And we're excited about the great matchups we got with some great players.
Probably the one recruit in the nation with Grayson, Robert Kim and Tyron Jones is playing several other great players, but some really strong football teams from.
Grayson to Brooklyn, to Chattahoochee, to conflict.
They've all been in a state finals in the last two years.
Let me ask you this, because you've got a couple of great programs coming up from the southern part of the state, and that's going to be a big plus for the for the corky cow.
It is.
We are glad that thrilled to have Camden County coming back with Jeff Herrin's team and also Colquitt County with Rush probes.
His team been right there the last three or four years.
So we think it's going to be a great, great matchup and a big, big, big games.
We're excited about it.
Be a great day of high school football.
You know, it's such a great way to kick off the season because you start at 9:00 in the morning and you just go til, you know, 11:00 a high school junkie cannot do that day.
Well, you remember last year, I mean, there was tons of touchdowns everywhere.
WALSH Yeah, yeah.
Held back laughs.
You know, it will be a great day of football.
No question about it.
And, you know, you just come in and for 12 or $15, you can stay all day and watch all of football.
You won't without getting too hot.
Now, on August the 25th.
We're excited about it.
Mark Now, this year's the 21st annual quirky cult classic.
Talked to the fans a little bit, how this thing has grown over the two decades.
Well, it started out in 1992 with the very first game in the Georgia Dome was the kickoff classic.
Corky kind of put it started putting together with McEachern and Brookwood.
They were the first two teams.
Corky passed away in 94 and kind of challenged me to keep the game alive, which we've done.
We're excited about what we've been and where we're going.
You know, it's expanded, went from a double header on a monday night in the second year, and it's going to be a tremendous event, not just a football game, but an event for the high schools.
We're going to expand that halftime for the principles of the high schools this year as well.
It's great for the bands, the youth leagues, so we want it to be a community event for each of our schools.
Coach, we got 30 seconds left.
What makes high school football so great in the state of Georgia?
Well, I think it's three or four things.
Number one is the great coaches.
It's a commitment from the coaches.
I've been in those shoes also.
It's a commitment from the communities.
I think that's really important.
High school football is important as well.
We still had spring practice, which helped the quality of football as well, and then the commitment of the schools and the administration.
And it's just a great game in Georgia.
High school football fits the bills for just about every other sport.
Dave Hunter, thanks so much for coming on with us.
We will see you at the Corky Go classic late August.
Well, Will, we're excited to have Deep bench.
You can tell I'm excited about football.
You're already fired up.
I love that.
Now, TB is, the home not only for high school football and high school basketball, the great championship there, but also some great locally produced shows like Georgia Traveler and Georgia Outdoors.
Here's a look behind the scenes at Georgia Public Broadcasting.
This is Georgia Instructional television program service of the State Department of Education, The GPB today is a far cry from its humble beginnings when during the 1960s and seventies, educational content was produced and distributed primarily to schools.
Since the early 1980s, GPB has been a PBS member station.
We bring you renowned kids programing from Sesame Street, Curious George and Clifford.
Well, as Nova Nature, the American Experience masterpiece, the full array of quality programing that has led to PBS becoming the most trusted media outlet in America, adding a state of the art headquarters in midtown Atlanta In 1998, GPB moved into the 21st century, ready to expand its influence in Georgia's growing film industry.
Equipped with the full array of HD studios, GPB has the opportunity to produce our own shows, as well as lease our studio space to outside productions.
So, John, how does GPB Sports fit in?
GPB Sports is a full scale sports production company, with a staff dedicated to producing the best, most coverage of high school sports in Georgia, Florida and not only your primary provider of GHC championships, GPB Sports also exclusively broadcast of the biggest football games in the state every Friday night all season long.
I guess GPB has come a long way in the last 50 years, and while we've grown and progressed, a few things us remain true.
First, we're always dedicated to providing high quality programs that educate, inform and entertain our audiences and enrich the quality of their lives.
And finally, we've come this far, primarily through the generous support of you, our viewers.
Thanks again for watching and thanks so much for your support.
All right.
We now welcome to our tailgate party, three top area football coaches.
To my left, Jeff Erwin, to Lasseter.
We got Mark Fleetwood of Peachtree Ridge.
We've got Jeff Carlberg of Centennial.
Thanks, guys, for coming on with us.
Jeff, we'll start with you since you're closest.
What makes a high school football in the state of Georgia and coaching high school football such a key thing?
Well, this is the third state I've been and having goes to Kentucky, in Alabama, and I think it's a combination of the just the culture, the interest in the sport, obviously the great media coverage, but then just the sheer talent in the state, because we have a large metro area, but we've also got great football throughout the state.
So it's really a combination of things, but it really starts, I think, with the passion that people have for football in the state of Georgia.
Mark, you and your first year at Peachtree Ridge last year, you got a taste of the playoffs.
What's that playoff fever like here in Georgia?
Big.
I mean, that's what everybody everywhere, everybody wants to go in and the expectations are there.
And the neat thing about it is in the state of Georgia, that's what everybody's playing for, is to make those playoffs and then see how it unfolds.
Jeff, you're a first year coach at last year.
You got to listen to me here a little bit up there, over here.
What's it like to be a first year coach going into and what kind of things go into building a program?
it's really exciting.
We're we're thrilled to be at Centennial.
We've had some great expectations for where we've come from.
We had some successes last year when we were there, and we had some success at Alpharetta when we were there.
And then hopefully that'll translate when we go to Centennial because I know the community is excited.
Our principal, Steve on my athletic director, Phil Thomas, they've both been great to me.
Get me in in the building and, and we're really excited about the season.
Kids are working hard and really fired up about Centennial.
Let me ask any of you three guys about the fact that they're going to six classes next year, maybe a seventh actually, with the single-A.
How that going to impact things.
We were just talking before we came on stage a few minutes ago in our part of the state in six eight, which will all be six eight.
There's not too much movement.
I think probably there's a little bit of movement.
You know, when you talk about the five in DeKalb County, you know, with Stephenson and Tucker and some of those schools and then in six A in the South, we would really talk about there's a lot of movement down there with Camden moving into Region one.
But certainly that's a big move with the private schools having their own playoff in single-A.
I would think that's a major event.
I agree.
Not not much movement on the Top end and we we added one school in in region seven, six, eight.
But you know I think as a state grows in population and more schools are added, I mean it's just things that you know, it's necessary to do keep everything is even as you possibly can.
I was telling these guys by my senior year in high school was 19 the fall of 1978, and that was the first year of foray.
It moved from triple A to four.
Jeff was a controversial all among the coaching this expansion into six and seven classes.
Yeah the expansion with six eight has been exciting for us because although we've lost a couple of rivals and Rothwell Milton most still them play them, but we've also picked up John's frequently, picked up Chattahoochee, which are our neighbors.
Marcus It's really been interesting for us in terms of changing the region and been more against the more community thing.
Quite all right.
I know that a lot of you guys were a part of Football Fridays in Georgia last year.
Hopefully you'll be again as you get into the playoffs and, whatnot.
And John Nelson takes a look at what Football Fridays is all about.
Coming up on GPB football as a championship team right there on top.
It's year two of GPB Sports football.
Friday's in Georgia and it's bigger and better than ever.
Kicking off August 31st with the Battle of the Big Chicken, a double portion of high school sports action live from McEachern High School and a return of all your Friday night favorites from Are You Smarter.
We test the skills of the principals to see if they are in fact smarter than their students.
So you are smarter than your students.
Way to go.
All right.
To rent.
Check a check in with two players, parents to see how well they really know their kids.
Max, It's actually anatomy was pretty tough.
In a preview of high school sports around the state with John's Georgia segment we call John's Georgia.
But let's show you how it turned into number five with the tornadoes.
You want to talk about one of the best games for those crazy fans that we highlight at the end of every game, but where you have all of the fun off and on the field pass, it's picked up and they're going to take it in for a touchdown.
But the green is a touchdown.
And so from Ringgold to Valdosta and Savannah to the Lagrange, you're to is the best coverage of high school sports on your football Fridays in Georgia all season long on the great GPB.
I can't wait for high school football to get here but of course up first up next, we've got the girls five day state championship.
We've got McEachern undefeated, ranked number one on Hillgrove.
We'll have the starting line.
That's coming up right after this timeout.
