You're watching the GHC boys and girls basketball championships on TV.
Marie, Georgia Public Television presents the Georgia High School Association's Girls State Basketball championships.
Major funding for the broadcast of this event is made possible in part by IBEW Local 613.
Georgia's Electric Membership Corporations South Trust Bank.
And by viewers like you.
Live from the Macon Coliseum.
It's the girls for a state championship featuring Glen Hills and Hephzibah, the Lady Spartans and the Lady Rebels.
And good afternoon, everybody, and welcome.
As championship weekend rolls on here on TV.
March Madness has definitely hit Macon in a big way.
Six games down, four to go as we continue our live broadcast here on Georgia Public Television, calling the game for this.
This is for a championship will be still quite Tenoch and Leonie Carlsen and they are courtside.
Hey, guys.
Jim, good to be with you.
You've heard of breakfast at Wimbledon.
This is lunch at the state high school finals.
It is good to have coach Len Carlson, who has played and coached just about every level, including the pros and including college basketball, major college basketball, no matter what level coach.
When you get this far, you've got to have some stars on your team.
Absolutely.
And the stars of the Glen Hill Spartans, Tyisha Smith, who is a six foot, two inch interior player, very athletic, a sophomore, and someday will be a major college player.
And along with here is Marion Whitfield, who is a wing player, a good corner shooter, and very athletic as well.
She's a junior and she will be a college player as well in a couple of years from now.
And when you look at the lady rebels, they have stars of their own who could play some major college basketball.
Absolutely.
Tamara Gilliard is maybe the best athlete on the floor.
She runs extremely well.
She plays inside.
And when she goes to college, she'll probably play the number three position along with her.
We've got Chantelle marie, who is excuse me, Sheryl Hannah, who is also a wing player who could put the ball on the floor, hit the corner, jump shot and is extremely athletic.
And the fact this whole team is very well conditioned and they run very well.
What do we look for this afternoon, Coach?
To look for a high scoring game?
Do we look for a lower scoring game?
A little more conservative, up and down?
What are we going to look for as we see the starting lineup?
This is Rebels.
This is going to be an unusual game because they are the mirror image of each other.
Both teams play zone defense.
Both teams will press on occasion.
Both teams are in great shape.
Both teams are fearless and and play hard.
So unless one team alters the tempo of how they play, they should they should have an extremely close and competitive game.
Well, that's the way it's been mostly for the state high school championships.
I think we'll probably take a look.
Hill's starting lineups in a moment, but we'll get into how close these teams are both on and off the court, literally.
Coach, you were very familiar with the lady rebels.
You've seen a play a couple of times, actually.
One gym that you work out with, a young lady works there.
Let's go down Gledhill starting lineup.
As you see a good mixture of some young talent and some senior leadership on this ballclub.
Absolutely.
You have Collins, a 511 senior who's kind of a role player and does a little bit of everything.
And then you have Whitfield, the junior five eight.
Junior is an excellent scorer and perimeter player.
You have Smith, a sophomore, who also contributes in a support role and then along with their two aforementioned stars.
So with two teams, the mirror image of each other, it's who.
And it's always this way.
Who does what they do best.
Better tonight.
Let's take a look at how Glen Hill's got here, Coach.
And some blow out early, but some they've been tested.
Glen Hill's beat Dalton by about 16 points.
And the big thing where their game was, they were played in a man to man defense and they were just too quick for Dalton and they just ran him off the court.
And as you can see, they defeated Kendrick and Kris County and Thompson along the way.
They are a very athletic team.
And if you're going to play them man to man, you'd better be in great shape.
Is it easy to say that the lady rebels a bit of a surprise to be in the finals?
Absolutely.
As a matter of fact, they were being dominated by South Cobb going right into the last couple of minutes of the game and they basically won this game on.
All right.
And physical conditioning.
They just had better athletes, not necessarily better basketball players, but they had better athletes.
And South Cobb and it really it's all the chess going down the road.
All right.
Let's let the announcer give you your starting lineups for tonight's game.
May I have your attention for the starting lineups?
First for Glen Hill's at forward number 32, a five foot 11 senior, Alicia Kelly for Hephzibah at forward number 54, five foot nine.
Sophomore Jaclyn Nelson for Glen Hill.
But forward number 20 for a five foot eight junior.
Marion Whitfield for Hephzibah at forward 440 for a six foot senior.
Let's Cuyahoga for Glen Hill's at center number 23, a six foot two sophomore eight shots field for Hephzibah at center number 55 foot ten Senior Tamera Killian for Glen Hills at guard number 21, a five foot six Junior.
Felicia Whitley for Hephzibah, Guard number 11, a five foot three.
Sophomore Shun Tony Murray for Baldwin Hill at guard number 11, five foot six.
Senior Shannon Carpenter.
Perhaps the mind guard, number 21, a five foot seven Senior Daryl Hannah.
Glen Hills is coached by coach Bernard Coleman.
Hephzibah is coached by Coach Window.
A lot of All right so get ready.
Quite a girls championship coming up in a moment right after we take this break.
Exciting high school basketball on its way.
Why they funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls basketball championships is provided in part by the following You're watching the U.S.A.
Boys and Girls Basketball Championships on TV.
And welcome back to the Quartet Girls State High School Championships.
You know, normally you need a scouting report before games, but our man on the sidelines, Rod Trimble, said maybe he didn't need a scouting report before this one hung up.
Do you give me way too much credit?
You know, these teams have played each other three times this year.
Glen Hills has won all three games, but it hasn't been a case of total domination.
Glen Hills won one game by four and the other two by six and incidentally, have some.
The coach, Wendell Lofton, has said his team has been routinely air conditioned this year.
They haven't had the legs to play for a complete quarter.
And he says now that problem has been limited, which I guess is a good thing considering the fact that this is the state championship game.
Do.
Thanks, Rob.
Good afternoon.
Glad you're with us for the state four games as the rebels in white with the ball and coach as you mentioned no surprise that Glen Hills is in that zone.
Yes, I thought that maybe one of the teams would deviate from the norm here in Troy, Renko in.
But they've come on as advertised.
Now, let's see if the other team zones as well Spartans with the ball trying to go inside and they do a nicely done on the rim in no good and it will be Glen Hill's ball.
That was a real nice pass by senior carpenter.
She's going to be a key player in this game.
She's the most physical point guard out there and the fate of this game could rest on her hands.
We'll get into how well these teams know each other.
But both coaches went to South Carolina State.
Both coaches majored in biology.
Both coaches go to the same church, both coaches, both praying for a win.
We'll see what happens as the lone jumper is up and feels good.
Sometimes you just need to rattle a few shots up there before one goes.
Rebels control.
They've got the people they want to take the first shot taking the shot.
So that's half about good defense.
They're ready.
Rebels 26 and five.
She made that pass from a little too far out.
You've got to take the ball up into the defense and then make the pass.
Best way to attack Izzo, Coach.
Just work that ball around less dribbling.
You pass through the zone.
But the big thing is you've got to have the numbers.
You've got to create an overload.
The best way to attack that zone defense that they're playing right now is with a14 zone offense.
Very patient.
Is that smart?
And the first foul of the game was a nice high post passed into the low post, but the high post passer was a little too high.
She's got to stay and at the free throw line and it's a man cutting roll Rebels to trigger was still scoreless 638 in the first quarter to go larger weapons high school state basketball that has been just marvelous so far still the basket has a little let's see what happens here.
No foul That should have been a foul over the back.
She should be at the free throw line shooting to right now You're trying to finish that inside.
Just didn't have enough muscle to get it up right patients against Bledsoe zone looking inside and looking perhaps for a three if they have a wide open wide.
Yeah but they're going to have to come up with a different configuration to get somebody open on the outside because they're just matching up with each outside player.
Now they're a passive zones, an active zone.
What would you call this one?
This is a passive matchup and wherever one an offensive player is, there's a defensive player.
So you've got to flash people into the pass and you have to create an interior.
Overall shot is up.
Go good, rebound up, no good.
Blood hills controls.
We promise you we will have a score some time in this game.
Foster it.
I've still no score jumpers up and no good.
That shot was a little bit too quick.
Rebels control.
Maybe they could get something off the transition running with the ball on three pointer.
No good run.
Hill's the other way and it has a lift.
Believe me, it's not cold in here.
Well, it isn't subject for shooting on the court, but it is a little cold and the shots haven't been that difficult.
Probably both teams have a case of the jitters right now.
As you can see, they're walking the ball up the floor right now knowing it a little bit, have a little half court pressure, which could increase the tempo of the game and could lead to some more open shots like that one.
You know, you're going to score jump ball possession.
Harrell will go Glen Hill's way there in the sky blue There's North Carolina like colors lady rebels in the red and black and white looking a bit like Cincinnati.
So now we've got the color set up.
Now we need a basketball.
Less than 5 minutes left in the first quarter to bring in the ball up, rocking it up.
Both teams combined for the oh and 12 so far.
Real estate, just one two time zone for second little wide on the shot there can travel to his own you got a pass to his own best passer against his own defense is the high post person who will break the ice first turnovers and some questionable shots still zero zero.
You would think coach maybe that these teams have played each other so much.
Would they be a little less nervous even though it's the finals?
That's why I thought one of the coaches would do something different.
It's very difficult to beat a team four times in one year and he got away with it.
Oh, the Americans got away with the travel there.
Nice pass and missed the inside shot and they getting some good looks inside.
It's just not falling.
And that's not your imagination.
And this is not baseball.
It is zero zero with 409 left.
Absolutely.
Hang in there, folks.
It's going to get better, we promise you.
Well, feel like defensive battles.
Not bad.
Okay.
Walking into slow tempo.
One hill still in that zone.
Lady Rebel still looking for something better.
Even off the backboard from 20 would have been nice.
The scoring hands on the run do it happens here.
Another nice pass covers the buildings Yeah And there's your franchise player Smith making a basket underneath to break the ice all the sophomore six two.
He say she's going to be a big time player Yeah women still not ready and there's their franchise player it that's a third rebound she's got and she's put up three and that's the first one that dropped for turmoil failure she's a senior she's potentially averages about 1617 points a game and we are two to both teams playing in that zone.
This one a little more passive it seems coach although they are coming out here to the hole Nicely done inside and we'll look forward to that court pressure put on by Glenn Hills and handle it nicely and they give them a layup but they miss it.
Yes, she is again.
And you get the feeling early this year is going to be a big, big part of this game plan for for she is their horse and they're going to rider and they've just got to keep her out of foul trouble.
And Cooper on the court as she went and she's off the court, their efficiency really drops from there.
Your officials are STEWART Big low threat.
His foul shot going with a rebound.
She'll have 20 by the time the game's over.
We'll hold you that coach.
Yeah, well, actually, her coach will hold her to that zone a little bit more passive, looking for the openings, looking for the spots, taking advantage when he can.
And there's that dribbling coach that you said usually like doesn't work against the zone and it certainly didn't.
There is she and a carpenter tried to up or shut down Murray tried to take it to the hole not too big there's two things that happen when you dribble through the zone.
Bad things and awful things and your coach taking you out, which is another bit.
Exactly good.
Very well done.
And we're still she's one of the jump shooters.
They have an 18 there's the turnover off the press but Hills will try to convert and they do Felicia Whitley, nicely done.
Is there another shooter at a time out early going?
And the three main players for Glen Hills are now in the scoring Well, well going pretty much status quo as we look at a replay and we can see the nice little jumper off the turnover.
Yep.
Catches the pass, puts it on the floor once squares up and puts it in.
Notice how the game has changed Now that Glen Hills has put in a three quarter pressure defense in this guy and it's up to four for the end of the easy opportunities.
All right, let's listen in and see what the coaches have to say.
Yeah, that's stay home work.
That's what my coach used to say to me before games.
Stay home.
Stay home as basketball vernacular for stay close to the basket.
So when you go out and you spread the defense, you've got to leave somebody staying home and garden.
So we were talking about it before the game, a game I did last time, the triple I, they weren't staying home when I first got a lot of easy baskets.
We'll see what happens here as the pressure is extended by Clint Hill and it causes another turnover.
There was a player from Cross Creek last night by the name of Willis and he's kind of hoping he could play against Baker every night.
He'd be a first team all-American.
You saw the shooting percentages, which were too good.
You're right, Coach.
I think he's still standing over there and he today he played for Glen Hill up early, going up.
But Hill's controlling the ball.
Haven't had a turnover so far up and good very nicely done inside you can see that pass came from the high post player get the ball into the high post against the zone Good things are going to happen ten for early going Glen Hill's controlling and just beating the press Gordon for the layup.
Try to beat other lady rebels They've had some good looks at the hoop coach just not falling early going.
They should have made that basket deal You got another rebound on your way to a 20.
Somebody let me know when she gets its way.
Yeah we mentioned Hilliard as you said coach is a big time prospect 510 senior 17 points a game three and she hits the first three youngsters watching this game out there.
The previous layup was shot with the right hand off the left foot.
It coming in from the left side.
You got to shoot with the left hand and you get a jump off the right foot.
That gives you a little barrier between the defensive man and the ball.
And that's why she missed that shot.
Not only do we bring it the game, we give you a clinic during it ten, six, and they're picking up the pressure a little bit on the point guard.
Right.
He'll try to get something going, nurse a foul and you betcha, Coach Hill, you can not get in foul trouble.
Absolutely.
If she comes out of the game, their efficiency goes down about 60%.
And I like Sheena Carpenter as a point guard because of her body.
She's very athletic, she's strong.
She can take a while to the basket and she can she can takes it on track and still finish.
And I think that's the main difference between her and team Chantelle Murray, who is a year younger as strictly physical strength.
And you saw her numbers ten, six and six that were popped up there.
That's pretty good all around play.
There's another turnover and a shot that should have been taken poorly, but still rebounding and controlling the ball.
Clint Hill's early going quality girls.
Glad you're with us.
It was a slow start, but it has heated up a little inside.
No good.
There she is.
And I think you're right.
She might just get 20.
Yes.
The revs on the run still not finding the way was Whitley who took that shot.
17 seconds to go and let's see if But Hill's worked for one, which will do well still and go in the you could hear the fans coming down.
There's a steal and perhaps fouling up all the rest.
This is a huge call.
This is a huge cost is nothing's going to come out of it.
And their main player got another foul and that is two in the first quarter.
Absolutely That win.
And now you get a question of do you want to sit it out for most of the second quarter, not letting her get that third, at least not early 3 seconds to go long three pointer off the back rib.
CARPENTER Pretty close.
So at the end of one and the quarter finals with the lead Glen Hill's 12 to 6 over the Lady Rebels.
We'll take a break, then we'll come back for second quarter action.
Funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following You're watching TV bringing you the best, You're watching the GHC boys and Girls basketball championships on TV.
Welcome back to the Karate Girls State Championship.
We want to take you inside the huddle to see what the coaches are saying and our man doing it this afternoon.
Long trip everybody got.
Let's do Glen Hills.
Coach Bernard Bowman's a pretty interesting guy.
He led South Carolina State in scoring for two years during the mid eighties and even had a tryout with the Lakers.
Now he teaches physics and biology at the school.
Apparently his gray matter is rubbing off on the kids.
Almost everyone on the roster is an honor student.
And that's what you like to hear.
That's terrific.
Actually, in college, my GPA was higher than my scoring average, which was kind of embarrassing.
By the way, if you're wondering how valuable Gilliard is to this lady Rebels team coach, he scored six points.
If you notice.
That's all the points they scored in the first quarter.
And Wales has come out and they're pressing now and there goes Jillian and she misses a and easy layup.
But I think they should keep their press on the whole game for the beautiful pass by the way.
Nice guy.
And then inside there's their franchise player That's the way you run a fast break and that is 14 to 16 the pressure is getting up to now.
Coach, you're the coach for the Lady Rebels.
Your star player has 2000 the first quarter.
You sit her at all in the second quarter and you say, hey, look, go out there, be careful and don't do anything stupid.
I think you've got a player and let her play conservatively because I don't think she's got a chance without her.
And on the other side of it, Glenn Hills has just got to really keep the pressure on on them and make this game as rapid a tempo game as possible to that rebound.
She got it.
She's going to be in danger.
You know, more on the offensive in the defensive sometimes because she's so aggressive coach going over the back and going to the boards.
Still 14 to 6 first quarter, 7 minutes to go second quarter.
There's a great matchup play here.
Two nice little point guards, good defense by Chantelle murray and she had a couple throws the ball out of bounds and it is a fun matchup It's 11 against 11.
This is Shannon Carpenter bringing it up.
Yes that zone that has been effective, it really, really done a great job being aggressive on the outside shooting.
And it's got to get somebody in the pivot.
Maybe Rebel's got to get somebody in the high post and then you can pass.
Well, there she is now it to the post foul there.
And it has been a slow paced game.
Not a lot of transition baskets, but let's be honest about it.
Not a lot of baskets, period.
The shooting was very cold at the outset and they've warmed up.
Yeah, it was a real snoozer until Golden Hill just went into their full court press and now the actions picked up.
Rebels looking and looking around, working it around, try to find that inside presence.
And there she is not to be up and fouled.
Tamara Delia is dominating inside Yeah and she's been playing against by Keesha Smith who is going to be a major college player so in there.
So the difference between the two of them is once a sophomore, once a senior one has a sophomore body and one has a senior body and their defensive strength is just amazing.
But Smith Sunday is going to be a super circle player.
That's the first, but the trigger on the second.
Good.
So it's 14 to 7.
But Hill's in control as they have been most of the way.
Both teams playing a zone the whole way out of the quarter.
No good rebound, Nice rebound.
Oh, good.
That's what happens when you bring that ball down low, Coach.
Yeah, it's a hard thing to get to get a big person to understand when somebody 16 or over brings the ball to their ankles, they are now six inches tall, long three pointer.
Not to be right.
Heels will control the boards Smith with another rebound there it comes to point guard Carpenter pulled the trigger wasn't to be not a bad shot maybe a little rushed they don't really need to hurry anything if they're going to hurry that you should hurry on defense they can take their time and find an inside.
They find it inside.
They'll get it in foul trouble.
If they get her in foul trouble, this game will be decided.
So far, no team really putting together a run of any sort, playing that zone.
Conservative, no overloads inside.
Nice pass wrap around up to no good.
Still can't finish it again.
No good There's that one That lady that we've been talking about and she is dominating inside delivered another good rebound strong rebound and she'll visitor from the foul line She's doing a good job inside.
You're right, Coach.
She's a big time player.
Absolutely.
And she had somebody to compliment her inside that was close to her ability.
They wouldn't be able to double down on her and she'd even score more points and get more rebounds.
And she is now averaging 17 points a game during the regular season.
You get that feeling.
She'll have at least that and I'm sure people are on her every night and teams have are putting a body on her every night to return from the line which makes it 14 deny blood Hill still up by five the lady rebels hanging right in there even though they've been cold from the outside.
Still in the zone looks like a131 And there's a timeout I believe every call by Glen Hill's some scores from earlier ball games and they've all been terrific here.
Jefferson a loser in the girls finals Timeout by Wesleyan 6549 Class AA That was a terrific game That was yesterday.
We're bringing you all the action there you see the final class AA boys Taylor County a winner there by 12 over Claxton.
Then we get to double a GHC, the winner in the girls final 5543 boys, too.
A reaction to Carter out partner Herb White's alma mater.
Also good.
Very good.
Wilkerson College game 6445 all action yesterday and cross keys against Mitchell Baker a game that I had the pleasure of doing terrific game 8278 cross keys great game plan they pull it out by two one and then northeast.
Let's go a winner, 61 to 52.
We should mention that as we see splashy scores for you, that will be followed by three more sensational games.
The quartet boys, Westlake against Creekside follows us.
So stay right there.
Steak SHAPIRO and Bo Barca, 792, zone fame in Atlanta.
We'll bring you all that action.
Never a dull moment on their shows in the morning.
Never a dull moment here at the high school finals.
Glad you're with us.
Battle Creek.
There you see the flakes out against Willard.
845.
So stay tuned.
Big numbers for us the time right now.
449 to go Gledhill in control, 14 to 9.
It's the lady rebels bring it across.
Still can't find the hoop coach.
They're really struggling.
They're struggling.
Whoa!
Oh, my.
Hey, hey.
Great finish.
That is severe.
Yeah.
You see where she'll be two years from now?
Wow.
What?
Balance, Coach?
I thought she was too far away from the hoop.
Only a sophomore.
She's got long arms, long legs.
She's going to get about £15 heavier.
And if she gets in that weight room and starts pumping the iron, she is going to be a dandy.
How about that shot?
This very nicely done, very acrobatic.
And at 16 and I have one more look too far away from the basket I don't think so.
Back to live action 420 left rebels trying to get someone hot.
Someone to put in a hoop up No good not to be in coach when the players start getting maybe a little frustrated and start forcing shots as we go down to the break and there's a turnover almost at a distance, a worry about your players getting frustrated?
Well, at halftime, there's got to be an adjustment made in and that's the first guy to come in with a high low post zone on offense.
So there's so many can get three underneath.
But the way they're playing right now, there's a defensive player everywhere they go.
There's they're not creating an overload and there's the horse with another basket.
Tamara Hilliard Just without her, it would be a problem.
But it's 16 to 11 and that's why we are only in a five point game with about 330 left in the second quarter.
Quoddy State Championships.
Glad you're with us all today.
We're bringing you all the state high school finals.
Oh, there's the turnover and that's what the rebels maybe need, Coach.
A couple of turnovers and maybe someone to hit some up outside jumpers.
A little more defensive intensity on that play created that turnover.
They weren't as passing Here we go again.
Well they played in three tight games so it's not like anybody's going to have the overconfident in this matchup.
I mean, you can come back and know, make it a tight game.
Absolutely thought about it, pulled it back.
Just looking for the opening all this zone which has been very effective both aggressive outside and inside they just covered up.
Here's the high first initial low pass approach.
That's what I'm talking about.
That's how you beat that defense.
Didn't work that time.
But Grant Hill on the break, they got a good look Nice pull up by Marion Whitfield.
Yeah sorry sorry do that the other night she can shoot on the run.
She's got good elevation Nice balance on that shot you to be able to say that was NBA like now you can say it was WNBA like.
Absolutely.
All right.
We're kicking it around.
A very aggressive lady Spartans defense wild shot inside rebound no good again on a try and not to be And one of the things that Hephzibah is doing better right now is they're getting some second efforts.
So even though they're not putting their initial shot into the basket, they're pounding the boards and they're getting some second shots.
And that might be a way they can get back in the game.
Lila Holder, a senior six foot five first shot, is good.
You feel like you're good.
Earlier this week, I talked to the coach.
A little stomach virus, but she must be feeling better now if you're in the state finals, Coach, unless you are really, really ill, you're probably going to play.
She also has a great physique for basketball.
She's tall and she's very angular.
Looks like she'll be a great runner.
1812 with 2 minutes to go.
Second quarter both teams in an aggressive zone ball three pointer no good one Mary Wicked rebound upper hand nicely done This way She's a good role player She picks up a lot of garbage as she did that time and put it right back in the basket.
2212 140 left ready rebel still having problems looking and trying to get it inside on the zone.
There's the inside out that the coach was talking about and there is the courage.
That's the key that opens up everything else.
Now, since she's only a sophomore, 591 set of twins on this team, Johnson is her sister.
030 So what, they be warming up and we're not afraid to take on.
Some twins don't look alike, but those two really do.
Lady rebels trying to take a little momentum into the half time as we're under a minute to go second quarter quarter girls state high school championships, that point guard is going to get a little closer to the defense.
Could they possibly be working and work down for one shot?
No, There's your answer right there.
And it will go Glen Hill's way.
You know, whenever a point guard or a guard is trying to initiate a zone offense in the zone defense is sagging back.
They can't stand two steps over half court, so they can't score from out there.
So now the defense is playing five people against for the middle person has to come up and challenge the defense.
They can't just look like they were going to do a little Four Corners action, but no rebound and a good one controlled by the lady rebels.
Tiffany Drake, only a freshman with that big rebound.
Now they're looking at the clock, 17 to go, last tie, last shot time before the half get a good one looks and that's not it No and in control of the ball she's everywhere Chantelle murray only 3 seconds.
Got to get it up She got no good on the three interesting first half.
No shot, no good.
So it's slow at times, cold at times, always exciting.
It's been an interesting first half and in control of the game.
Glen Hill's 12 to 15.
Let's go to Rob.
Trouble with one of the coaches, Rob.
We got Glen Hill's head coach, Bernard Bowman.
Coach, it seems like maybe a little inconsistent on defense.
Sometimes you're able to get out on transition.
Other times we're giving them second shot.
Right now.
That's what we're not back, not when we get them to an opportunity score on the second shot.
So we got a whole lot better now.
The second half, it seems like you guys seem to thrive a little bit when the tempo is a little bit more faster paced.
Am I correct?
Yeah, that's correct.
If we can keep it going a little tempo faster, then we we'll be all right.
I can look second half.
All right, Stu, Thank you very much, Rob.
So pretty good first half.
We'll see what happens in the second half quarter.
Girls, two quarters are down, two to go 20 to 15.

And welcome back to Championship Weekend here.
In making halftime at the four eight girls Championship, Glenn Hills leads it 2215 over Hephzibah and of course warming up right on the court Now all the boys from four a Westlake Wolves and the Creekside Vikings then they will play their game around 330.
We go downstairs now to Rob Tittle.
Hello, Rob.
I am flanked by a couple of Hephzibah assistant Pretzels.
Got Debbie Shepherd here.
Just tell me one thing.
Wendell Shepherd.
Wendell Green head coach, has been there for 32 years.
What does that mean to your program?
That means a program that's in a continuous state of building and rebuilding.
And it's the purpose of athletes for our school.
Not only are they athletes, but they're academic people as well.
Are we got Ron Wilkins over here, the discipline guy?
You kind of look like that in a way.
What is the rivalry like between these two schools?
Oh, it's great.
The students in both schools have been on the radio every day calling back and forth, having different challenges in the morning.
It's been great for both schools, but of course, the kids have been well behaved.
There's not a whole lot of ugly trash talking going on, right?
No, no.
All out in good fun, good sportsmanship.
All right.
From the watch out.
See how I'm equal opportunity going.
Go back to Derby now.
What is the environment been like at the school this week?
It's been wonderful.
There's been so much school support, so much community support.
It's just been a wonderful week for us.
One point games, two point games.
Now we're here to take the big game home.
And you guys don't have a state championship in any major sport.
This could be the first one.
Being a woman, you got to be pleased that it might come from a girls basketball team.
No other way.
The best way to take it home is with our lady rebels out over here.
Any discipline problems this week?
You know, with all the spirit going on, kids swinging from the chandelier, everything like that?
No, we haven't had any problems.
All the kids want to have a good time.
They want to ride the bus up the dame.
You can't ride the bus if you get in trouble.
How hungry is this school for a state championship?
Like I mentioned before, you guys haven't really won anything yet in a major sport.
We're very hungry.
It would be great for the school and the community as well.
We're very hungry for them.
All right.
I'm done with my two articulate assistant principals.
I'm not very articulate.
I've been stuttering and stammering down here.
But let's go back to gym.
Janaki Yeah, yeah, I know what you mean.
Robb Kids singing from Chandelier Song and I do the best I can.
All right.
The boys from the four eight championship are still warming up downstairs, Westlake and Creekside.
In the meantime, let's throw it back to Stu, Clay, Ted and Lady Carlson.
Guys, thank you very much.
Yeah, I was wondering about that, too.
I knew the cafeteria.
My high school was pretty nice, but I didn't see any chandelier as coach.
Let's take a look at the numbers inside the numbers and let's see what they say.
Let's take a look at the halftime stats and you give us your opinions.
Well, four for 32 from the from the field perhaps, but that's you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out.
13% is pretty low.
35% field goal for Glen Hills which was is not high but not awful either.
Three point field goal is one for five from Hephzibah also four from Glen Hill's free throws six rate for asthma two for two from Glen Hills.
Turnovers are pretty even and the rebounds are pretty.
Avon even though it was a low scoring game, there were some pretty good players coach, some exciting athletic plays.
And here we go Here we have a nice pass inside Gun Hills player turns around and makes a nice turn around.
Jump shot There's the woman of the hour that just missed that one.
Yeah but she gets her own rebound and puts it back in.
It's going to be fun to watch for next year.
Playing out of three position.
This was the shot of the first half shot.
And the big thing about that shot, it was made by a sophomore.
She is just beginning to blossom.
The three pointer finally falls.
Someone shooting for the lady rebels, getting them back in this game.
Nice touch.
Nice follow through.
So much more to come.

The Lady Rebels just came back out on the court with about a minute three left to go until we resume play.
Let's take a look at some of the numbers as far as individuals go from that first half.
And I don't think any of these numbers will surprise you, Coach, because as you were mentioning, there you go, the leading scorer for Glen Hills Smith, a very fine player.
Fleming's in Whitfield low scoring games.
So you're not going to have anybody in double figures but the lady rebels.
And I'm sure this won't surprise you because you were talking about it before the game and during the game.
Absolutely.
And if you're a coach in Glen Hills, you want to increase the tempo of this game as much as possible.
All right.
What would you say if you're the coach?
Wendell offered to the lady rebels at halftime?
Well, let's find out.
Rob.
Well, Coach Oh, he's busy.
Coach And right now he's down five.
COACH in the first half.
Seems like you had a bunch of second chance shots you couldn't quite put them in.
That'd be enough to make me want to go jump off the Otis Redding Bridge down the road there.
We're going to be all right.
We're going to be all right the second half.
We're going to be all right.
We missing some of the lead, the lay up.
Like you said.
We're going to be all right, though.
What can you do?
This is a team that likes to run there.
What do you do to kind of neutralize that, maybe kind of take the air out of their legs a little bit, press a little bit.
I guess we would press a little bit.
That's what we're trying to do next, I hope.
All right, Coach, good luck in the second half.
A little quiet determination there.
Stu, what do you think?
Well, I think so, but I'll tell you what, the coach brought up a great point saying that, hey, look, you are the lady rebels.
You've shot 13%.
And coach, as you mentioned, you're only down five points.
It's pretty easy.
What say at halftime?
Hey, look, girls, we're down five and we can't throw one in.
It can't get any worse and you're only down five.
So that should be a confidence builder.
Make a couple of baskets.
You're back in the ballgame.
And when you've coach for almost 30 years in high school, which Coach Wendell Lofton has, you really don't get to panic.
At halftime.
He's got the talent, he knows what he can do and he's absolutely right.
Just put a little more pressure.
Some of these shots are going to fall.
We're going to have a close ballgame, I think so.
I think it's going to go right down the wire and a lot of it is going to be dependent on whether they stay in the same defense is what do we look for early in the third quarter?
I look for Glen Hills to come out and press more often of the 20 points they got, they probably got ten of them off of transition from the press, and that's how they got their league and that's what they should continue to do.
And we're all third quarter action.
40 girls Ready rebels try to pick things up.
And if you're going to do that, there's a girl to get the ball to.
But she stepped out of bounds.
Emma Gilmore was on that inline matchup.
So now here comes her press for the first time from the lady rebels easily broken outlet hills and then set it up going against that zone average in the first half we're going around looking for good shots, passing and triangles.
Try to get the high percentage shot as you do and as a coach mentioned, don't dribble, just shoot just like that.
And that's what happens.
Nicely done, Marion Whitfield, Georgia.
Five, eight.
Puts in the jumper.
All right.
Now we've got Glen Hill's in a little bit of a press that wasn't lost and it caused a turnover.
They should press on every single play.
And why is that, Coach number one, it's going to get the hearts of a team tired.
In number two, it's going to take number 50 away from the basket to jump rebound.
It's up very nicely done by Sheena Carpenter, who shot it and got her own rebound it.
As the coach mentioned, there's that pressure.
Long jumper probably did didn't take that though not and I don't think there's any probably about it it's one of the twins Carpenter scored on the other end and I really like her and I like her because of her physicality.
She is unusually strong for a point guard.
Looks like she's been lifting weights since she was like 13, 14 years old, 2415, got heels in control, Long jumper is good.
And that was the right idea by Nelson that was is said out of bounds playing they executed it perfectly another turnover other way could be an easy layup if they get it down to her and they do it all of a sudden when we were saying things are going the opposite way the rebels right in this 2420 absolutely have a knack for breaking across the dribble right up the middle throw it into she's a Smith is Smith and we're rolling now we're going up and down and it's starting to warm up folks we got a game now Nelson again that's that's an eight point she scored in the last minute and a half.
Oh this is fun to the hoop what do we got offensive foul.
We had more action in the last minute and a half and we had the first first half was terrific.
As cold as they were in the first half.
That's how hot they were in the last 2 minutes.
A lot of transition, getting up the floor, some nice shots, some nice execution.
Both teams working the press up and in right out.
Murray Nice shot by Shantel.
Nice pass by Kamara.
She could really handle the ball for a girl.
It's far too Yeah that's why that's why she'll be a three on a major college level.
She was open, was going to get it done and a timeout.
Coach Baldwin wants to settle things down.
Doesn't like the pace of the game.
She's the lady rebels who can really blow it open at any time, getting a little momentum on their side.
So let's talk it.
It was a nice layup, you know, and it goes ShoreTel Murray fine player coach likes her by the way.
Let me remind you, don't miss Georgia's longest running high school sports and academic show.
It's called Prep Sports.
Plus, it returns Thursday, March 14th at 7:30 p.m. and beginning March 30th, Prep sports plus moves to Saturday at 6:30 p.m. right here on AP TV.
You know that last turnover by the Spartans?
By the Spartans, right out a point.
You don't see people really make bounce passes anymore.
It's like a lost art and a bounce pass that would have given him an easy layup.
Jaclyn Nelson three for five, a three pointer.
So she three quarter and it doesn't catch rim never got a feet set and just let it fly and that's what happens You got to get your feet down.
Well her sister was an excellent and maybe she thinks it's all in the family genetic didn't inherit a good three point shot that's probably the pressure liquor Rick Barry all of his kids can play and he was one of the greatest three point shooters of of all time.
And if you don't believe him, ask him.
Yeah, he is not shy zone defense by the rebels.
Well Hill is trying to get something going not today but the rebound his third and probably a foul on the board you're right working in Atlanta was fun to watch John Barry and Drew Barry and Brant Barry and even as a kid when Rick was with the Warriors, you're one of the best three point touches ever.
And Barry, that's playing on the West Coast now.
He's not as soft as he used to be and he's starting to play defense, but he's turning into one of the better players in the league dribbles with the turnover a two on one.
Let's see if they can convert up and down and nicely done by Murray.
And all of a sudden things have gone in reverse.
26, 27 Now, Glen Hills, he's been in control down by one.
Let's see how they react.
It should be a layup here, but couldn't finish.
And Lisa Smith will go to the line now.
Once you get that break, you got to finish.
You're going to be some layups to be had.
Coach Lofton from the Lady Rebels has got their team in a more aggressive defense now.
It's increased the tempo of the game and it's a better game because of it.
He's got good force.
Smith does, but misses the first two third quarter 40 girls state championship.
Smith with eight points.
He has three boards, she has nine points three boards and it's 2727.
You got to remember, she's just a sophomore.
Half court pressure by Glen Hill's inside nicely dog.
Nice basket, nice pass into the pink and nice layup.
We're starting to get this thing wrapped up.
Absolutely.
We've got a ballgame now and there's a wide open layup and pass.
Nelson misses the layup.
The Gimme teammates fighting for almost one out of bounds but the rebels control try as we set inside against that zone could have been walking but wasn't a little easy jumper and it falls Tiffany Drayton she's only a freshman but she's hanging around there, got a nice pass and put it in 16 to 3 run in the last 230.
And that's why Glen Hill's now down by two.
And we were waiting for that run coach.
We were talking about him.
There was and it always generated off the defense.
Good call.
It's going to be one of those games.
It comes down to the last shot.
I know it's hard to say that these teams are so familiar.
All their games have been so close.
They both have confident confidence against each other coach.
And now they're starting to loosen up on the shooting.
Absolutely.
Lady Rebels with some pressure when Hill's controlling and breaking and now the Reds go back into the zone.
It is three and that's when they're vulnerable When they play that passive zone.
The run they just went on was generated by full court pressure and they've got to keep that pressure up.
Marion Whitfield hit that three back the other way, which come not to be for failure, but Hill's will control.
I know we've said it.
It's first time I've seen her in person deliver.
It's a five player.
Nice touch.
Can handle the ball.
She is going to be a good Division one player.
See, here we go with press.
That's what they get.
And stay in red.
Try up an offensive foul.
Let's see if they count the basket.
She's a copper there.
Can't believe it.
Or Chantelle Murray can't believe it.
Waved off, Waved off the basket.
No basket.
But they got another turnover and that on Whitley who tried to take it to the hoop and it wasn't going and here's more pressure bad boy it is it has really picked up Coach Harris has picked up full court.
So here we are, 30 to 31.
Glen Hill's back in the lead, third quarter under three to go.
So if they run an out of bounds play, something happened there, they they're starting to break it up.
Lady reps is trying to get out try to get some easy laughs at the smart thing they're doing is not trying to make those long passes because of course the turnovers what Hill's in there so they been get it the full game and a foul on the entry pass and no one thing that we really kind of neglected because she hasn't failed but early going in this game Tamara Gilmer got two very quick fouls in the first quarter, stayed in the game and hasn't picked up another one.
And I think a lot of that was because the game was played so slow in the first half.
So when you have guards, another team and picks up 20 fouls, you want to create as much tempo and chaos as possible so they could possibly get the third set and that never happened.
Possession error was going to Grant Hill's way.
They retain possession, but boy, I'll tell you what, this is one aggressive lady rebel team and it causes another turnover.
And on the sideline and you can see Coach Wendell often say, yes, that's the way we're supposed to play jampacked here in Macon.
We're glad you're with us for the Friday girls State high school champion Chip.
It's just as if the hips of the Lady Rebels were two different teams.
The team that presses and the team that sits back in the zone, the team that presses is going to score.
The team that sits back in the zone is going to get killed, turnovers.
And there you can see it got Hill's 11 lady reps eight.
A lot of those 11 have come in the last four or 5 minutes.
Absolutely very aggressive.
Look more confident up for the shot Hill yet again.
And will she take over almost the problem that one when Hill's running nicely done on the lay up Whitley finishes this is more like it now going hands with the pressure and they generate a turnover Just remember youngsters you pass through a zone trap and you dribble through a man to man press.
Don't get the two confused.
If you do, that's what will happen when Hill's going against pressure.
Still in the zone, the lady rebels, now they're it up so you might be tied up again in that possession.
Harrell is going to lady rebels way so with either ball the lady rebels zone defense now is turned into an aggressive matchup zone and they're not given that easy outside wing shot anyway Glen Hill's going full court with the pressure there's a turnover or is it.
Yes it is they control the ball.
Well I'll tell you what, Coach, this will give you gray hairs on the coaching inside.
You got the ball, you turn it over, you got it, you turn it over, lady revs with the ball, trying to bring it up against the Glen Hill's pressure and do cross court.
You've got to operate at a speed where you retain your efficiency.
You can't throw great nature.
She can't execute.
What is it that John Wooden said?
Be quick, but don't hurry.
Yeah.
Inside for the lady reps. Not today.
Do they have the ball?
And it looks like it is tied up again and obviously we just had a possession Herald going the other way.
So it is what Hill's ball possession arrow pointed away under a minute to go in the third quarter.
Things have picked up but hill up by one and there's quite a girls championship here making a full court pressure.
They have a couple of players under open underneath but no problem to pull the trigger decided to go with it.
There's the easy help.
I really like her.
She was a better shooter.
She could play in a lot of places.
She's worse still.
She started down the end but doesn't finish.
There's the layup for Marion Whitfield.
She's a scorer when play has been scoring all year and then all of a sudden it's back up to that five point lead that we had at halftime.
Long pass down and there's the turnover And then she coach it's a speed you you've got to control that speed you don't have to hurry once you get the numerical advantage, once it's two on one or three on two, there's no need to hurry, slow it down, make the pass, make the basket.
What.
Hill's starting to run.
Nice pass.
And here's the finish if you want.
Nicely done.
Rolled in class.
It's more fun.
Classic two on one.
Now we have a seven point game one three.
Not to be at as cold as it was in the first half.
We have warmed up.
It will only get hotter.
State to the quad A girls high school championship fourth quarter is coming up right after this break.
Funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following You're watching the NCAA Boys and Girls basketball championships on TBS.
Welcome back to the court.
Eight girls state high school championships.
Let's go to our courtside reporter Rob trivia.
What do you got, Rob?
Well, still, you know, the Simpson head to the head that big 62 to run the Greenhills coach Bernard Bowman did a great job of adjusting to have some express.
They simply had to get someone in the middle of the floor with the ball off here in the middle of the floor.
You have more Florida work with and you can break the press.
And they've done that and they're up seven.
Thanks, Rob.
All right, Coach, how do we look for on each side to take them down the stretch?
I think more of the I think both teams will continue to gamble a little bit more on defense.
Travel increased the tempo and that will increase the opportunity for some scoring.
We're talking about runs as Clint Hill comes up with the turnover layup.
And believe it or not, over the last 3 minutes or so, that is a ten or run for Glen Hills as they go up by nine.
That was a great play by Whitfield.
Not only did she make a great steal, she controlled the dribble.
She kept her body under control, went in and laid it in off the glass.
Very nice.
And as Clint Hill's press is effective, know one thing when you're in a state finals as it looks like it was a foul there, coach, and you start falling behind, maybe you take a shot you wouldn't normally take him in the first quarter.
You take it in the fourth because you're pressing so hard.
And that's true.
And also the lady rebels are using Jillian up front to to handle the ball.
And that means she's going to have to run the length of the floor every time on on the WNBA's pass.
And that's going to be tough for Glen Hill's with the pressure comes up with the turnover again that's been the story in the second half good Trying to pass this press is effective Glen Hill's all over it Full court letting rebel want to talk about it.
They'll take a 32nd timeout.
It's awfully tough when you have your biggest player taking the ball out of bounds.
Now they have to inbound it and then they've got to run the right to the core.
Usually you take your huge player and you get them up to its half court so he doesn't tie himself up.
We'll see if fatigue comes into play.

Rebels on the attack.
The bears from their turnover is a complete it.
No scramble on the floor.
Referee says it is still a rebels ball.
That was simply the case where the ball handler just picked up the ball too early.
The defender moved off the ball handler and intercepted the pass.
But in the passing lane, that's what we tell the youngsters.
Play the passing lanes as we approach the seven minute mark.
Fourth quarter Glen Hills up by nine.
Lady rebels looking inside trying to find something.
This is an aggressive lady rebels offense but it equally aggressive Glen Hill's defense.
There's another rebound and all of a sudden slowly but surely they're pulling Roy a little piece by piece.
And the young lady that has the ball right now is a big reason.
She is Cina Carpenter.
She runs the show.
It's five six senior and she has played a marvelous floor game.
So far.
But Glenn Hill needs Coach Gledhill having a little more success.
Actually a lot more success with getting inside the Lady Rebels zone than the Lady Rams have of getting in that run hill zone.
They've got more balance and they have more offensive threats and you've got to cover them when they go out in the wing.
And when you do that, the high low post opens.
And as we alluded to earlier, the way to beat zone is high, low, high, low and out.
And you were right about she hit a carpenter.
She is aggressive.
She is quick.
She can handle the ball.
She picks her spots and she goes to the hoop and she's going to be shooting, too.
She's just stronger.
She's just physically stronger than the other small players out there.
And then it really sticks out when you're a college student in high school, one of the first things to look for is to look at the strength in their body.
And this is just a strong girl shooter going for her trouble for the night, not today, but she has three assists.
She has played, as we mentioned, a marvelous floor game, 4333, Glen Hills by ten, the Lady Rebel still trying to find the inside magic Outside magic.
Any magic to get back in this game.
There's a girl that can get him started to a nice shot by Ms.. Murray.
Oh, a sophomore.
She looks small.
She is five four, but a lot of fire.
Nice steal right in front of us.
Here come the lady reps. Maybe they can turn it around with the turnover.
Oh, the three pointer shot down by Nelson.
Nobody came on Challenger.
She just knocked it down.
What was a ten point lead a minute ago is now a five point lead at a time out by Glen Hills.
And Coach Bowman says, Whoa, wait a minute, don't get ahead of yourselves.
Now, back and forth.
We're going coach.
Here's a look at the inside and outside shooting.
And the Lady Rebs really needed this and they got it.
How was a good 2022 footer?
Nobody came out on her and she stroked it right in the bottom of the net.
Or is a famous announcer used to say string music.
You know, in a game like this you almost where it's definitely in the beginning.
Let's go up I'll make my point after we get a jump and get into it, but definitely jump in there looking through it.
Understand it.
Take your time.
All right.
Come on.
Hey, we got pressure on the basketball.
Back to the defense.
Okay.
One, two, three.
That's what will make the difference.
Just to continue that thought, Coach, in the early going, when you're in a game where no one's hitting from the outside, maybe you have a tendency to not challenge those players.
So maybe the three pointers were all open in, maybe some some players will hit some.
I think that's the case.
I think also that when you get a ten point lead and that 6 minutes to go, you play tentative and you can't.
You have got to be aggressive right till the final buzzer.
It's like the pass defense in pro football.
Every time a team goes into it end up feeling a touchdown.
That was a tough shot by.
Marion Whitfield, Nicely done by the junior who caught pressure.
There it is again.
They go, they've got to stay aggressive.
They can't play pass away.
WHITFIELD With two quick big whoops dribbles on the run with a two on one and got the numbers underneath.
Looking good.
Nice job.
Nice pass, Nice pass.
Get underneath.
It's Jocelyn Nelson, one of the twins who plays for the lady Rebels.
Here come Grant Hill.
And as coach mentions, Grant Hill's has to remain aggressive, not just on defense.
Going to do it on offense to coach that.
All right, here we go.
There's a foul on a lost shoe.
There's a good teaching point in that play.
That's what you call bailing out of player.
There's a play she likes to shoot.
She was off balance and see nothing good was going to happen.
Don't foul somebody when they do something like that.
You see it all the time on 2530 foot off balance jump shots somebody will go out and whack so many and don't bail a player out when they get ready to do something bad point take it for 32 left but here's a59 tackle We see that away What right in front of us.
Wow inside easy hoop and here's the pressure continuing.
Well any rebels having problems they finally get it across halfcourt for the easy hook and once they do that coach will set it pull it back.
They throw it out of bounds.
That's right.
Adviser through a love pass that only plastic man could have got.
What's the rule, Coach?
When do you go to the hoop?
What do you have numbers When you have a clear shot what do you what did you tell your players as a coach?
Get the ball in the middle.
She got to go to the hoop.
She was on the side and you don't want to give a coaching clinic here, but when the ball is in the middle, you deal with a triangle.
When the ball is on the side, you deal with the line.
When the free player is on the weak side, you deal with an impossible line because you have to love it to get it to it, to the player.
And when you lobbed the ball across the defense, bad things are going to happen.
So in other words, try to look for a guy that's open and don't make it a tough angle, get it in the middle and look left and look right.
Look both ways before crossing the street and passing.
It's all right up.
Runs around for Felicia Whitley, who has quietly played a very game.
And we're at a ten point lead with about 4 minutes left in this quarter state championship game.
Slow start, but well play to these last two quarters.
Absolutely.
That picked up the tempo of the game and the whole game changed.
Still, the backcourt pressure by Glen Hills Reds had an easier time of breaking it they're going to attack and that will play out yet again.
You know coach are you sure Smith was dominant as?
Well, as Sheryl had, but we haven't heard much from Hannah in the second half.
Not not that much.
And that was the case on that last play where Hilliard was bringing the ball up.
They need her to be the receiver underneath to finish the play.
Just as we were talking about Smith, she puts in an easy layup and things are getting a little late.
Right now.
It is a 13 point lead, but Hill's with the ball and slowing things down and probably going to look for good inside shots or so you would think, spreading that offense out against this lady rebels defense and they come out and attack on the defensive end.
They need to stay focused now on defense so offensively they don't have to hurry anything anymore.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Coach Bowman call a time timeout, spread the floor, give the ball to their point guard Sheena Carpenter, and let her control that with their ball handling and strength and then get the ball inside to either Smith or Whitfield and Whitley.
And they're nice perimeter shooters.
They don't have to hurry offensively anymore.
They set off with the first of two.
She's only a sophomore.
What a player she could be, what a player she is already.
And as you mentioned, the time out here to discuss things.
All right, Coach, let's take it from the other side.
You're the coach of Glen Hills.
You already told us that Coach Ball would say, let's spread it out and take our times.
Now, on the other side, Wendell Lofton, you're by 13 with about 3 minutes to go.
What do you tell your players?
Well, you've got to do everything to turn the game into a frenetic pace.
And if they're going to widen the floor and go to some kind of four corners, you can't be the four corners with minimum pressure.
You have to one, three, one zone trap them and you're going to have to really gamble on your traps.
And if you give up a shot, give up a wing shot and let the bottom in on the one, three, one, stay at home.
As we heard from him earlier, and defend the basket.
So one coach wants to build the pace to a high level and the other coach wants to let the air out of the ball.
The defense will determine what happens.
So here we go.
That's the set up 319.
Quite a girl state high school championship lady rebels against the Glen Hills Spartans.
It's been a terrific game this second half and it's going to be tough.
A long road for those lady rebels to come up, but let's see what can happen.
Crazier things have happened for sure and we've seen that they can make that spurt.
Coach, a turnover here, a three pointer there, and all of a sudden you're back in the game.
They're going to have to do it rather quickly.
One shot, Smith shooting a second to try to make it a 14 point game and she does.
They don't need to force the offensive action anymore in this game And look at Clint Hill still pressing up with him.
Well, Miss Muscle, she was always just like Mighty Mouse.
She's everywhere.
And that was the little miss muscles of McMuffin.
The muscles right?
Yes, she is strong.
Yep.
Another turnover.
Why not press laser?
Whitley will shoot two.
Well, balance.
Well coach teams actually on both sides.
First is good One.
They should stay here.
What seemed like a game moments ago.
Coach is getting a bit out of hand.
Nice form, nice soft touch.
Kept their feet, stayed up.
Oh, that's careless.
Third over and it's just becoming.
Yeah, practice now.
Carpenter finishes.
Okay, now finish this play.
Many reps can't just pass hope and there's a foul and one of the Nelson girls will go to the line But it has been that press coach no doubt about it.
It's been those turnovers and here we take a look at it inside and there's the foul So here's the foul inside gets good position, puts it up and gets banged on from the side.
So the obvious question is what does players do now defensively Need to use some time on the clock.
They press up front, fall back into a 1 to 2 perimeter zone, make the lady rebels pass the ball around and before you know it.
The game's over.
It's both shots.
And this turn so quickly going into the fourth quarter.
And there is one of my great prediction saying I think this is going to come down to the wire.
But right now it's an 18 point margin with just under 3 minutes to go a turnover.
Lady reps needed more of those earlier.
Another turnover there and back and forth we go.
They've got to convert this one and they do get Nelson in for the layup maybe a little too late let's see probably a too late 16 point margin.
Still for the press with Clint Hill composure, poise.
I mean, he's been pressed all game and they really got some good shots off balance.
They're not as dependent on one player as that's is.
Whoops.
Here we go.
A little battling and it goes Grant Hill's way.
So they're just a little spread it out.
Why not run the clock, which has a couple of seconds over 2 minutes to go, and your state champs, let's say, they basically they don't have to force another shot for the rest of the game.
Now, you're either going to go for the steal, coaches are going to play it this way.
You're going to have to tell somebody that vacancy and Mighty Mouse, he's got a ball and you're not going to take it from her.
She's a carpenter.
Number 11 right there and has played a terrific scoring game.
As we've mentioned controlled it inside and really run the show.
Marion Whitfield will go to the line.
Keep that my name in mind.
Marion Whitfield.
She's only a junior.
She's terrific player.
She's got another year high school.
You know, they've got a bunch of players that can play college basketball.
Felicia Whitley can play somewhere.
Marion Whitfield can Tyisha is going to play somewhere.
And she and a conference is going to play somewhere, one or two for Lillard 5042 144 left in this quite a championship.
Glad you're with us this afternoon.
Glad you'll be with us and hopefully be with us tonight.
As you look down the of the next quartet girls state high school champs.
That would be Glenn Hills.
Coming up for you by the way West Westlake against Creekside that's at 330 with Steak SHAPIRO and ball back from 790.
The Zone in Atlanta will bring you all that action following our game.
Of course, Jim will keep you updated with all the highlights and things that have happened earlier today.
And there's been some great action girls.
Don't forget about Middle Creek against Collins Hill.
That's at 7:00.
That's a real nice shot by Amber Preston.
She just came in the ball game and you saw the five boys championship coming up, which will be the grand finale of another successful and terrific weekend of high school basketball right here on GOP TV.
Glad you joined us for the action today as the lady wraps trying to make it closer with this deal up.
And no good enough to do just a matter now of the final score possession arrow going Glen Hill's way, which is the way the second half has gone to.
As we mentioned, if you joined us late, both teams very familiar with each other.
This is the fourth time this year they have met for weeks away.
That's a big time shot by Smith, another name to keep.
And what do you think about this, coach?
What do you think that they've got Smith and Woodfield coming back next year?
Absolutely.
They're they're going to have a great team next year.
And if Miss Carpenter's parents are listening to this, if you'll put a basket up in your garage and make a shoot about a thousand shots every day, she can play major college basketball.
She can learn how to shoot more consistently.
Well, three pointer, no good, rebound up and and still a tough, tough second half.
To Tamara Hilliard who will have much better halves And this when she goes on to play division one college basketball 103 left 6244 will help control of this quarter a championship game.
Going to get an easy layup or they're just going to roll it out?
No, they're going to go for all they get and walk with the ball.
We were mentioning a coach, these schools within ten miles of each other, ten miles of each other, and one's located in South Augustine and one is located in the perimeter of South Augusta.
And this really bodes well for the Richmond County School basketball system when you can have two teams playing for the state championship that looks awfully good for your regional program.
Rebels trying to make it close pulling up for the jumper, not for big stoops.
High tech coach Lynn Carlson, our pleasure to bring you the quad championship game this afternoon from here in Macon, which has 33 more year, more seconds to go until.
It is a great year for Grant.
It's been a great year for the Lady Reds.
But there you see the finish.
And Smith has been sensational.
No fouls, if you're right.
He'll just run out the clock.
This is one of those games when you can say the best team won there.
Sometimes the team that played the hardest one and some teams that had sometimes an off night, but then they're the better team.
That's not to take anything away from the hats of the team.
They had a great, great season.
Well, there it is.
Congratulations to the Glen Hill Spartans.
Quite a champions over their Lady Reds there, having scored 66 to 46.
And let's all pile up.
That's how they do it these days, Coach.
Unbelievable.
What a season and a nice job.
Clint Hill, Ladies Spartans First state championship milestone for their school.
But I'll tell you what, as we mentioned with the players that they've got, it will not be their last.
They'll be back like Arnold.
They'll be back.
All right, Coach, we're going to turn around.
Was it the third quarter when the pressure took effect?
Yes, Both teams were to tentative in the beginning and thank God they both changed their defensive philosophy.
Or you and I would have been doing a lot of talking here.
Well, it was a slow start.
The percentages we have to have the lady shot 13% in the first half and we're still only down by five.
And we thought it would be a closer game because we we knew they couldn't shoot 13% in the second half and they coach, but it was not to be.
All right, let's go with one happy coach.
Rob, take it away.
Bernard Bolden with me.
Coach, how were you able to withstand that run that the rebels went on to begin the second half?
I just told the girls to stay focused and play hard and you can do that.
We'll be okay.
It seems like when you broke their pressure, broke their spirit, I guess you think that's the case.
Well, I don't know about breaking their spirit because doesn't have a great team, but I think right now we just play real hard.
I don't know if you realize this or not, but you've just won the first state championship for the school in any of the major sports.
That's got to be pretty gratifying as outstanding.
All girls work hard for you.
What is this, a dinosaur?
Now you're only losing three seniors this year.
You've got almost everyone back.
I don't know.
We just got to keep working.
We got to keep working.
I will go celebrate with your team.
All right.
There you go.
Glenn Hill, state champions.
Hi.
Thanks, Rob Trimble.
