Why?
From the Gwinnett Center?
It's the Boys five high school basketball championship Westlake at 13 two against Milton at 28 and four.
Good evening, everyone.
Stu Plotnick along with Herb White.
Our pleasure to bring you the nightcap of all tonight's action.
Oh, a heavyweight fight.
Big kids, big plays, big game.
Westlake has a big guy, maybe one of the best in the state in the middle.
Herb Marcus Thornton is six foot eight.
He's a Clemson signee.
He's a big, strong guy.
He gets about 24 points and 12 rebounds a game.
He's going to have his hands full in the paint tonight.
Well, you look at the starting lineup size and veterans throughout the whole lineup of the starting five with Johnson and Harris Junior.
Then there's Newberry, Thorton and Jacobs, the senior.
You can see it's an experienced team that is going for coach Darron Rogers.
Well, Jacob Newberry and it means a great deal.
We were here two years ago.
Well, we've been here twice in a row.
We lost to Columbia, then we lost again to Puebla last year.
So this is our third time here in the Gwinnett Arena.
We want to make this the best one.
We got over the hump of not losing in the Final Four by beating central Gwinnett.
So this is a big challenge for us as a playoff team.
As good as Milton, what our team approved all year, that we should be here and we're ready to play.
Ready to play.
Indeed, both coaches have a lot of experience in championship basketball.
You look at Milton, another team with another tremendous big guy in the middle.
Yeah.
And it's tough to pick out one guy for Milton.
They have so many.
But Julian Royle is certainly a great basketball player and I'm not going to quote his stats.
I'm going to tell you what he did a couple of games ago in a playoff game.
Free throw line against Norcross.
No time on the clock.
His team down one point.
He steps to the free throw line, makes two free throws after time has expired on the clock for his team to win by one.
So quite a pressure player, you might say clutch player in a big situation.
And here you'll see it.
It's Scott Lloyd, Parker, Nulty and Royal.
The starting lineup for coach David Boyd, who's been here before.
Well, last year we made it to the state championship game, but I think we were sort of in all of the whole process.
I some young, but our goal was to make it back.
And of course it hasn't been easy.
And so we just want to, you know, take advantage of the opportunity.
I think being a year older should help us.
And coaching runs in Coach Boyd's family, no doubt about his brother.
A coach at Greater Atlanta Christian played for David actually when he was a coach at Campbell, One of the three other schools.
He's won a state championship that if he wins tonight, he'll be the only coach in Georgia basketball history to win state titles at four different schools.
And they impressed Rick Restitution the Newton County coach last night after the game he said it was if Milton plays like that against Westlake tomorrow they don't have a prayer.
But I'll guarantee you Coach Rogers doesn't feel like that.
Well, Milton was hitting from the inside.
They were hitting from the outside.
This Westlake team talented as well.
I'm expecting up and down and a really, really high scoring game.
Let's go to the dress announcer David weather for tonight's starting lineup.
The team between the Milton Eagles and the Westlake Lions.
Now let's meet the starting lineup first for the Westlake Lions at guard a64 senior number one, Chad Johnson at guard, a68 senior number two, Marcus Thornton at guard, a six foot junior.
Number three, Robby Harris at guard, a62, senior number 22, Jeff Newberry.
And at center, a68 senior number 33, Anthony Jake Westlake is coached by Darren Rogers.
Now the starting lineup for the Milton Eagles at guard, a63 junior number by Shannon Scott at guard, a61 junior, another Jordan long at Bullard a67 sophomore number 12 heaven no to guard a64 junior Number 23 John Parker and at center six eight junior number 25 Junior Roy Milton is coached by David Boyd.
Get ready.
What a game we've got coming up right after this.
Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.
Let's get it started.
Let's get started.
We've had some folks suggest that after watching Jon Nelson handle the rock on the camera today, that we need to send him to summer basketball camp, use some of the money for that.
But we're not going to.

This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station, serving all of Georgia.
Welcome back.
Let's go to Judge Gerald Barry.
Courtside goes through all the people in Morrow.
Georgia may be surprised to know that they just got mentioned.
Head coach Darren Rogers locker room after Westlake beat more by 30 points earlier this year.
They went to number one in the rankings.
Well, two weeks later, they ended up losing tomorrow.
And since that time, he used the slogan Remember Morrow to remind his players to always play with passion and to always play hard.
And that's what he thinks is going to be the difference in today's game.
Back over to you, Stuart.
Gerald He might be right.
You know, Herb, the little things can make a difference in a big game.
Like this.
Yeah, but I watched David Boyd in last year's championship game when they lost to Wheeler.
It wasn't that he was okay with losing, but you could see the look on his face kind of resigned and saying, okay, wait'll next year, guys.
And here he is back here again.
But Westlake is ready to play, Jake, No doubt about that.
Milton, in your white red it is Westlake in your purple and black and we are underway.
What a night.
We got it, Father basketball.
It's Milton in the margin and in the purple and blue it is Westlake starting out and already turning over the ball.
Shannon Scott with the quick hands up lay up in and a nicely done and easily done Shannon Scott son of Charlie Scott We saw an NBA players daughter playing in the last game makes it Atlanta great basketball hotbed all these NBA players coming here and their progeny are turning into stars right in front of our eyes.
Wesley trying to go inside and the rebound controlled by air and and here they go.
You know, Charlie might be a little miffed that his son is not going to North Carolina.
He's ending up going to Ohio State football place.
How did that happen?
You got a great program there.
Too many point guards in North Carolina.
Mr. Scott wanted to play early, just underway.
Good to have you with us.
Westlake Patient on offense.
Milton.
What a semifinal game.
They had her.
Yeah, they did.
They put 30 point lead on Newton County.
And like I said, Rick Masterson, the coach in Newton County, said if they play like that, it's like a college team to beat them.
Milton with good interior defense Westlake patient so far looking inside to the big man up there.
Well done.
You're right, Stu That was very patient on offense Got the shot they wanted and Westlake strength is on the inside and they're going to work it They're talking about that and the big guy takes it out.
A naughty film made him well out of his range, but up and down we go.
And this is what we expect, a fast paced game.
A lot of athletes on the floor tonight and many athletes who can run and jump.
Sure.
Milton without a senior on their entire roster.
So take a good look at this team.
They'll be around for a while.
No good.
Less like with the follow up still surrounded by Milton and they will break underneath him.
But before he could get off the shot.
Was it ever naughty, naughty, six, seven big kid, but had some rain.
Here you see the replay?
That's about 240 £50 right into you right there.
Nulty made five out of six three pointers last night at six foot seven.
So Milton's got a lot of different weapons.
He's looking for the three pointer The good guys can shoot away outside for Milton, controlled by Westlake, and they want to run, Turn it over and we'll be going back and forth.
It's going to be an up and down ballgame as Milton controls up and up and should be a foul and is ever naughty.
Only a sophomore will go to the floor to shoot to a little bit of a late whistle.
But you're right, he definitely got him in the back to shoot it.
You see it and the 671 9019 points in the semis, 15 on three pointers.
So this kid's got range and as you can see, a nice touch at the line.
Marcus Smart in Newbury and an Anthony Jacobs all played on the same team when they were six years old.
And now they're playing high school ball together.
So you think they know how to play with each other?
I would think they know each other.
Is there to have a kind of a funny little picture of each other on that team.
So they will continue as the big goes on it.
Milton Early going, Milton up for two gets underway another turnover and Milton wants to push the ball against this Westlake team control break up blocking that the other way we go at that end and nicely done Oh yes there Newbury with a nice move he avoided the charge Shannon Scott trying to draw that charge.
Newbury went up, made the shot and there's an elbow thrown and a good call by the official there.
Don't be a little frustrated throughout that elbow.
And look at the body control coming up here.
Herb, this is beautiful.
Looked like he was going to charge for sure.
Stepped around, used it off the glass with the soft touch.
Beautiful play.
Westlake seven seniors veteran team know what it's like to win.
They've been together for an awfully long time with the pressure outside and the turnover, everybody on the ground Milton Farley controls in early going.
They're elbows and legs and everything fly to the hoop up and in, well, a little too easy on that drive to the basket.
The Westlake defense gave him the big lane and he took advantage of it.
And what do you want to do with a team like Milton?
Do you know that a great team is hyped up to be You want to stay with him in that first 5 minutes, get into the flow of the game, let them know they're going to have a ball game.
Milton Match it up, man.
And in Westlake, spreading it out, trying to see if they can get maybe something easy underneath her.
Good look here three quarters down and Rodney Harris with his first bucket of the night again nice patient by Westlake working that ball looking for the open shot.
No hurry.
Milton works it inside.
Now to the hoop.
Good body control.
What a move.
What a play by Shannon Scott.
Man, what a crossover he has.
It's a little bit like Michael Jordan Westlake pulled it back taking a little time left in the defense over and spreading it out almost into a four corners.
Oh yes underneath easy bucket That's what you're doing You're right there spreading that Milton defense out and taking advantage.
Maybe a little quickness advantage for Westlake so far in this ballgame.
Nulty with the putback nice looking player inside and out again only a sophomore and a turnover.
Scott gets it, turns it right back over, gets it back again.
And I think they're going to get somebody for a foul.
I think he knew they were.
Oh, it's been up and down and nonstop action First quarter with 317 left Milton up by 110 to 9 Much more to come broadcast of today's games is made possible in part by the following broadcast of this program is made possible in part by the Georgia High School Association, the GHC.

First couple of minutes ten, ten, nine, Milton and Westlake, giving them a statement saying, hey, we're here for the duration of this one, guys.
Milton to trigger in a51 with 3 minutes to go in his first quarter.
It has been up and down in nonstop action Westlake in their man and they had again in their blue and black noted good looking sophomore trying to be patient Hilton keeping it on the outside on the perimeter Westlake with some good interior defense Shannon Scott looking to drive at every opportunity.
He's a classic slasher in Royals number 25.
He has the ball little off balance and Westlake will control with the rebound and is open underneath Westlake tries to get it and they do and what do we got there a little ball off the leg of Milton let's look at this Milton team three of the top 50 juniors in the country in the country are on this Milton team.
So they're going to see a lot of college coaches.
Both these teams will Westlake team down and they do trigger and the block Westlake with some big tries inside the Anthony Jacob six eight £300 before dinner he's going to central Florida on a football scholarship.
They'll let him play basketball and with his size, heard the little play anything else he wants?
Yeah, he gets up and down the floor.
I'm telling you what, He's running right along with everybody else.
So he carries that weight around pretty well.
And we had Anthony Jacobs is 31 in our program.
He's actually wearing number 33 this evening.
So we'll get him straight here in a minute.
Coach Milton, breaking the pressure, trying to bring it up with Royall going to Hill, but he loses it.
And here comes Westlake on a controlled break looking down the charger.
Is it offensive?
Nicely done by that man that we've been talking to and that is Jordan Lloyd getting in front.
This is the two quick teams.
Yeah, even the big guys are quick.
Marcus Thornton with the block down on the other end of the floor.
But well, there's just great plays that everyone hears.
You see the replay.
Good call by the official on that.
Nicely done on defensive end 1010 all tied up this but a championship basketball game here from the groups that are up and around and nicely done beautiful move by Julian Royall only a junior six 1815.
You'll be hearing from him this game and a lot next year.
Well this is for college coaches this is a one stop shop for Milton turnover and Lloyd leading the break getting away outside turnovers unforced turnovers and those are the kind coach Boyd doesn't like to see.
George Boyd you see him two seasons at Milton State finals last year, played his high school ball at Campbell High School.
Yes, he did great high school for basketball heads, great teams In the sixties when I was growing up, less like I could see slowing the tempo down, looking inside.
And that will be a hard.
Westlake is doing a good job of controlling the tempo in this game and that's that's the right way to play against a team like Milton High.
You control the backboard, you control the tempo, you play good defense, you control the tempo, don't turn the ball over.
You control the tempo.
Make some free throws will help control the tempo.
Romeo Lewis at the line.
Great crowd on hand, absolutely packed here on both sides of the arena.
Great lead game tonight.
The Norcross Girls First State championship in their history broke right dance 58 game win streak this even what a what a classic basketball game that was great game all the momentum beautiful pass up for the jam and throwing down Julian Royall with a big time dunk I don't think it's going to be the last one We see three point game Milton but you can bank on that Steve Westlake again slowing the pace down.
Don't want to get into an up and down game too much unless they have the numbers less than it is to go in this first quarter.
Everything we are yeah beautiful move but offensive George Noel a great hang in the air move to give Nulty credit watch him step in here you see the great pass on the break and Julian Royal with the flush Westlake whistle took him back court pressure you can tell David Boyd emphasizes drawing that charge they've drawn two and tried to draw one other one spreading it out as Milton on the drive going to the whole affair the and and the basket down royal big time player only a junior this is a guy six 8 to 15 Look at that move It went from the head of the circle to the rack and about a step and a half still one dribble to watch him going warm up 17 points eight rebounds you see beautiful touch nice nice touch on one on the ball and a lot like Miller Grove.
This team has a lot of big guys that are still growing and filling out.
They're just going to get better and better.
So 1711 with just about a 35 to go in this first quarter, what's like slowing it down, maybe working for one?
We'll have to see.
Kind of a big possession here for Westlake.
They're down six, but they need to score here and keep it in a couple of buckets of this Milton team and get the rebound.
And now Milton will go four one with just 16 seconds in his first quarter play without fouling here they make the shot, they make it.
Don't give them any help.
There's that man again from the outside.
Royall tried to pull the trigger.
Not that time.
Westlake controls.
And what a first half almost goes in.
We have had this so quick three quarters to go Milton 17 Westlake 11.
Thanks for watching.

Milton 17 The Westlake 11 impressions are well, Mark is starting to set out most of his first quarter, and we're trying to find out why.
POSEY Ollie has been in there 611 playing in his stead, but they need Marcus Thornton in the ballgame.
But it's a heck of a ballgame in West Westlake's right in this thing.
They just need to get down there and get a couple buckets.
You don't want to fall eight or ten down to this team, that's for sure.
Well, Milton Explosive.
We saw that in the semifinals with the ball and going against a very tight Westlake man to man.
Well, it's a tough job for Chad Johnson.
Guard Shannon Scott, one on one out here there, John Parker, perhaps a little out of his range.
Again, a genuine six three great athlete, best defender, man on man of this Milton team Westlake.
Again be patient with the ball trying to work it in good hesitation Oh you had the slam thank you very much that is Ali with the slam.
Okay.
We now know Marcus Thornton went out with a twisted ankle.
We're trying to find out what the severity is on that and let you know.
But 24 points out of your starting lineup, that's going to be big.
But if Ali can keep playing like that with the slam follow, it's going to be big.
And you take a depth to though, this team of Milton will come at you.
They're ten deep.
They will keep coming at you.
Shannon Scott shoot to 14 points, seven assists.
Julio Jones as we mentioned, Charlie Scott's son going to Ohio State already committed you see that a lot more them in high school basketball the kids committing before their senior year.
You see it in football is are you seeing that as a trend?
Well, they're recruiting the kids when they're in the eighth and ninth grade.
That's absolutely true.
They might as well go ahead and commit.
And, you know, it did let them concentrate on their basketball and their studies for their last couple of years when they're in school.
So it may be a good thing.
Snoop, There you see that Milton depth.
You saw four new bodies coming in and just trying to wear Westlake Down and any other team that they played this season.
Second of two for Scott.
Well fall to Turkey doing a good job on the backboard Stu and that's one of the keys to staying with this Melton team looking inside, slowing it down when they can look like a bit of a double dribble went up no good.
Jacobs Can't find the hoop so Milton looking to run slowing it down and perhaps to to slow it down enough on the breakaway up and no good And here we go back and forth it is a three on one and something could happen here up and no good defense with the block and let them play still keep running it's a track meet right now just let them play first one or 21 wins Nice job by Westlake two passes in the layup That's the way you want to run that break.
1815 Milton by three looking inside outside up nice looking jumper man Oh man he shoot it Parker with the three pointer classic Look at jump shot and from the sidelines Gerald on the belly.
Oliver tells us that Marcus Stone is expected to return.
How soon?
We're not sure.
Nice move by Lee the 611 pivot man with the head fake dribble drive drew the foul and scores or has it decided where he wants to go to college has a lot of division one offers a lot of these kids you see will fill out and you look at Coach Boyd.
He's a cool customer.
David Boyd He has coached three Mr. Basketball with his dad is Georgia, so he's used to seeing a lot of talent.
Well, he won his first championship at Campbell, then won one at Burke Mar and then Tucker.
So the board gets it done.
Give him the time.
Second one up, second one.
Good.
So, Ali, with a couple steer clear of confirm why.
Our pleasure to be bringing five basketball And don't forget plenty of action tomorrow also from make it So we're only just beginning 930 in the morning we saw with the wheelchair ballgames and we finish up tomorrow at 845 a ballgame.
So please join us is north.
He takes a three pointer, no good.
And it looks like he'll be Westlake Ball noted for a great shooter's got a little bit of a knuckleball There's new but he gets the job done with it doesn't matter what it looks like it didn't matter what happens to it.
Just under 540 left in the game five eight championship Milton 21 Westlake, 17 broadcast of today's games is made possible in part by the following.
Thank you.
Can I help you today?
I know things just looking.
This is cute and so tell my dad he wouldn't do it there.
So don't do it here.

It's up to you like they're the fashion police.
Have you ever dreamed of inventing the next big thing?
Watch a reality competition show up.
Georgia Tech whiz kids competing to win $15 $0 next Wednesday, March 17th at 7 p.m. on GPB intervention to put around Thornton's ankle.
Get him back in there.
Yeah, they need him.
They're staying right with him.
But it's just as you say, it's very, very tough to play without your stud 24 points and 12 rebounds per game out of the lineup.
To give Westlake credit, they're hanging tough of 530 left in this first half of this fighting championship game.
Westlake extending and spreading it out again Herb Milton coming out to greet him Westlake Journal taking their time not only the best of shots you want to take think that may have been a pass across to Ali but he didn't see it.
But they're trying to isolate somebody on nobody.
They don't think he can guard somebody on the perimeter.
They're trying to break him down, get the penetration and create something.
Alley oop.
Look for it.
Hit the rim, but still good.
Nicely done by corner game.
Newbury, check out Newbury Barber did a good job of altering his jump in midair when the ball did deflect off the hoop underneath.
Beautiful move royals.
Yes yes that is a big time player.
You got it.
You've got to be careful with this Middleton team.
They can lull you to sleep.
A couple of fast breaks, roll up again.
They'll do a tough shot and gets his own rebound, spreading it out.
Big guy way outside for NBA three and royal doesn't get it back We go the other way.
I didn't see David Boies grimaced, so he must be okay with that.
Westlake getting some good looks at the hoop, just not getting it in.
And there's a foul shot.
Johnson will go to the foul line and Wesley getting three shots at the basket and David Boyd letting his guys know we've got to show up some rebounds.
Fellas.
And free throws can keep you in the game still, as you well know.
And that's what's happening right now.
Westlake is just battling their tails off, making their free throws and staying in this ballgame.
Looks like they want to shrink that clock a little to wear down a little clock.
Let Milton get out on the break or pull up or give any kind of run again.
You got your star out.
And then, like you say, Milton's a very deep team, so you want to slow it down, try to keep it at a pace.
Well, you don't wear yourself completely out.
Interesting.
The Court Because the longer you stay on the bench so that ankle gets big free throws by Johnson 2321 so far, the ball game we thought it would be as Milton leads by two with 4 minutes to go second quarter or does Milton never have some quickness inside the oil that's easy has a chance and beautiful pass Shannon and Scott no look north of you look good look a young player Westlake pulling it back Chad Johnson try to control things from the point over to Ronnie Harrison this is the old North Carolina Four Corners Johnson takes it to the hole.
U.S. was Yes, great job again spreading that floor out, taking advantage on the dribble drive with some quickness.
Chad Johnson positioned on Lee and watch this Nice finish by the big guy.
Soft kiss off the glass.
You don't have to dunk a ball if you don't have the angle.
Just get the two points at least 611 senior Nice touch and do it.
And all of a sudden it's a one point game.
Anthony Jacobs checking back yards to the line, Milton bringing it up now, starting to slow down a bit themselves with Westlake looking like they're in a sort of compact zone.
David Boyd hollering out a play, You're right, Westlake has gone zone.
Looks like a 2 to 1 and maybe a three to it.
Looking inside, taking the time, try to get used to this one way outside up and no good alley.
Another rebound little short now Westlake starting to feel like just a bit off the front Westlake will continue to have control looks like getting the loose balls through They're coming up with offensive rebounds and keeping it alive And that's what you have to do against this Milton team because every possession with them is huge.
Rodney Harris running the show out front, trying to take it to the hole has got the going, looks inside to the big guy Anthony Jacobs can't get it in there up again alley and the ball will remain with Westlake Well I read those quotes from the Newton County coach in the paper that I'll guarantee you it was on the bulletin board for Westlake where they went in talking about nobody can beat Milton if they play like they did last night and they're better than college players.
So I guarantee you Westlake feels they can beat them in this show and they think they can.
Milton Billboard The other way we go.
Well, Westlake got a good look at the hoop.
Didn't knock it down.
This pace has slowed down a bit, is up and down for a while.
Westlake staying in that zone, way outside.
Beautiful touch.
That's what he can do.
And you got to know where Nolte is all the time.
You got to know where your shooters are.
Unfortunately, there's just a bunch of them on this Milton team we mentioned.
Milton noted that semifinal had five three pointer, so that's what he can do and he can go inside as well, stepped out of bounds and it'll be Milton's ball.
And if you're Westlake like Herb, you fought so hard to keep this close, don't let anything happen in the last minute, minute and a half to get down by ten or 12 or get this let this Milton team get on a run.
Newberry picked his dribble up over there.
I shouldn't have done that.
But Westlake with eight turnovers, they need to cut that down a little bit Pass inside and he gets it back.
Looks like it just tipped off and went off.
Parker's And so it will be Westlake's ball All right the next minute and 35 seconds.
Do you just want to spread it out?
It's been working for Westlake.
Spread it out, get good shots.
They haven't really taken a bad shot in this first half.
I'm impressed with their patience and their game plan so far.
Westlake, as heard, said, spreading it out, trying to find a crease in that Milton defense closing a minute to go in this first half.
It's been up and down, almost got the roll.
Jacobs and Ali got the rebound on that three pointer no good and Milton will go the other way.
Parker fighting with the ball almost lost it Jump ball possession Westlake heads up play again by Westlake Parker a little and throw with his ball handling and the Westlake players jumped on him and got two shots down here again stay with the good rebounding by Lee and couldn't knock it down but I'm very impressed with Westlake and yet Milton still up four so tells you how how good a team they are Jacobs checking in and Westlake with under a minute will they go for one maybe spreading it out probably the right play here is to do all the work that you can do if you go for one is go in down by Ford.
You're right.
This team, the way they've been up and down, that wouldn't be too bad.
Westlake passing it around closing 40 Milton really not coming out and challenge him and just letting him play for the last shot.
So now they're going to come out a little bit.
I got to be careful with that ball.
Milton So quick on the perimeter.
Coach Roger says, Let's take a timeout down to 26.
Let's discuss it, see what we can do.
Great strategy by Coach Rogers.
Now he's going to get it.
Probably go with about seven or eight, six or 7 seconds maybe.
Hopefully he can do that, get a good look.
He can draw the foul and maybe have a chance for one offensive rebound.
Let's look at some of the action we've got for you tomorrow.
Savannah Christian at Wesleyan Girls, single-A basketball full schedule, as I've mentioned, other games of interest for a boys It'll be what Jill against Wesleyan 1245 to 8 girls Buford will get you doing any of these games.
Herb I know you're doing a ton of them through in the Double-A boys and the triple-A boy Barney.
He'll be doing this game together still against Greater Atlanta Christian at Greater Atlanta Christian Team is a good one, again, coached by Eddie Martin of Norcross, Bam.
Spreading it out.
Wesley, going for that last shot.
As you can see, the clock rolling down, Milton pulling back.
And let's see what happens inside with the move outside and penetrating nowhere to go in trouble.
But there he is, Ali, with the open shot.
And that is just absolutely perfect basketball in the way you'd want to have to have Ali just doing a great job filling in right in this first half, hitting the boards and making himself available under the hoop.
Let's go courtside to Gerald Holiday.
What's the coach coached boy, before the game, you said you wanted to play your game.
Do you feel like your team did that in the first half?
Well, we did some things well.
They're so long in there.
Oh, had a lot of our shots.
BLOCK I'd like to see us ball fake a little bit more and then go strong with it.
I did not have enough Marcus Thornton in there affect your game plan?
Well, you know, he's a great player, but I've got two other good ones, too.
So.
All right, Thanks a lot, Coach, Back over to you, too.
All right.
So at halftime, terrific game 28, 26.
Much more coming up on GPB.
I like to move it, move it.
You like to move it?
You like it?
I like to move it, Move it, Move.
Thanks for watching the basketball action here on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
We're going to have the second half of the game coming up in just a bit.
I am John Nelson, the host of Prep Sports Plus here on GPB, alongside my tag team partner and more talented basketball star.
The elevator from dictator Herb White.
And we are going to talk about why folks need to be MVP's of Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Well, simply because if you want to see more great basketball players like Maya moore, Kwami Brown, Dwight Howard, Lewis, Williams, Thompson, Humphries and all the great teams that we've seen over the last 15 years, there's only one way to do it because if Georgia Public Broadcasting does not continue to do these games, they're going to get spread out amongst who knows who.
And you're going to see games at all times of the day.
You're going to see maybe tape delay games.
It's like it was 15 years ago.
So Georgia high school sports deserves more.
They deserve what we're doing for them.
And the only way we're going to keep doing that is with these guys help, John.
And that's the way to do it.
You know, you talk about basic membership and you talk about all the different levels that you can be an MVP for Gp-B and here's how you do it.
Basic membership, 25 and $35.
And you can do that by checking that number right there at the bottom of your screen and doing it on our secure server.
Dawg.
$35 level is basic.
It's a one time thing.
If you're a student, a senior, a member of the military, it's $25.
But we also have some thank you's associated with the basketball championships that you're seeing right now here on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
At the $35 level, there's your foldable stadium cushion for your foldable sport of choice.
Doesn't have to be just football.
It can be whatever sports you want.
Go ahead and take it with you Indoors or outdoors has a GPB logo.
You get to show your support for GPB out in the open.
12 months out of the year, the $35 level next step up.
You can do this one on installments at your GPB logo.
Roll up blanket once again, show your support and stay warm 12 months out of the year that you can do on installments, $6.25.
You can't come up with a greater impact by being an MVP for Georgia Public Broadcasting at the $75 level.
And how do you do that right now?
Once again, number bottom of the screen website, GPB, Talk a few quick clicks.
As we like to say, you're in business, you can do it on your AT&T mobile phone at GPB.
If you are part of the team here at Georgia Public Broadcasting.
First off, we want to thank you.
If you haven't made that effort to be a part of the team here at GPB, now is your chance to do it.
Continue to show your support for the only statewide voice that Georgia Public Broadcasting has and you got to do it.
This is the time to do it.
Herb, Right here.
GPB You know, you may have guessed I do probably my best work on the other side of the camera.
Jon That's probably evident.
But because, you know, my job is to raise corporate dollars for Georgia Public Broadcasting for our programing.
And let's face it, we have some great corporate partners that work with us on our high school sports.
And I don't need to tell everybody who they are.
They'll be able to see them during the games, but only between in the games and between the quarters because we do not interrupt our programing for commercials.
So thank our public support, our corporate supporters when you get the chance.
These guys don't even run the hard commercials like they'd be able to run on commercial or cable television.
They run spots talking about their support for their communities, and that's why they're involved in this.
They're involved to help these because they have kids, they have families, they have people involved in these games just like you do.
So if you're sitting there in your living room or in your den and you're enjoying these games on Georgia Public Broadcasting, there's only one way to say thank you for us for having these games available to you.
And that's by going to your phone.
Becoming a member of Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Use a credit card.
Don't forget 24 seven you can go to WW GPB Dawg and become a member of Georgia Public Broadcasting 24 seven.
And we urge you to do that.
There's no more important factor in this equation than you out there.
So realize that it's time to do it.
John All right, one more time.
Let's go through the thank you very, very quickly.
$35 level.
Once again, this is a one time investment in Georgia Public Broadcasting.
It's the affordable stadium question with your GPB logo.
Next step up the ladder at the $75 level, a little over $6 a month on average that you roll up blanket for your investment in Georgia.
Public Broadcasting.
Then the combos $125 level logo, thermos stadium cushion, roll a blanket.
Then the his and hers are years and years of the one $75 level two logo thermoses, the two foldable stadium cushions in the blanket.
John You see a lot of spin in politics and television, but this is not one of the places.
This is the truth.
I don't know how you do this.

Welcome back to the Gwinnett Center at half.
It's 2826.
Milton over West Lake first half up and down both vertically and up and down the court.
That was the Georgian royal show dunking and getting on the brakes.
Some fantastic moves underneath, going to the hoop.
It looks like a big time player.
This is what he's going to have to do for Milton in the first or second half.
Here's where the big hurt Marcus Thornton got hurt.
And the big question, will he come back other guys, pick it up?
Look at the moves Herbst committed out of the way Newberry with a fantastic move And here's the guy OG Ali who is picking it up underneath So at the half it's 2826 Westlake down by two and I mentioned about 5 minutes left in the first half a turnover for Westlake.
They had to cut it down.
They didn't have another turnover.
STU And they've had more shots than Milton and they're doing a great job controlling their offensive end of the floor, doing what they want.
Well, let's get to the big question of the night so far.
What's going on with Thornton?
Here's Joe Oliver.
Eric Coach Rogers.
Gordon wasn't in there for most of the first half.
How is him not being in there going to affect your game playing in the second half?
Well, the one thing we've been doing all year, we're a team.
One player don't really affect what we do.
Mark is a big part of it.
Of course, you know, he's at least four, but it's his time when you guys got to pick it up and down so far and coach our league and Big Tony and the team has picked it up and we we feel that they're going to continue to do it throughout the game cause we hope Marcus going to be able to come back.
But if not, we come into play.
But thanks a lot, Coach.
Good luck in the second half.
Back over to you, Stu.
Thank you, Gerald.
This part of a huge crowd that's here with us still partying.
Herbalife bringing you all the action.
And there you see Thornton.
I mean, he's a weapon and he looks to me like he's ready or even close to coming back.
Well, you know, again, in the championship game, if he's any way he could get on the floor, he certainly would.
But you saw Coach Rodgers.
He's determined they played that whole first half without him and they're hanging in there and Inkosi Ali is just doing a fantastic job so far, nine points, six rebounds in that first half.
And I look for Westlake to hang tough in this one.
Steve.
They're playing zone right now.
Well, zoning it up and trying to keep everyone outside.
But there's that man again that we showed you all the highlights from in the first half.
Easy over and well done.
So another bucket by Julian Royal Westlake slowing it down just a bit Getting inside just a bit easy here Park court again and all of a sudden it's back to Newbury with the steal Here comes.
Oh, yeah, spinning.
He's going to get a kick complete.
Here comes Milton with no numbers in Westlake.
With pressure all over the place, Milton gets it out.
So up and down we go.
And still only a two point game with that little fourth there.
Julian Royle.
But Milton gets the ball back.
Yeah, probably four sets, pass one on, two on the break and didn't have anywhere to go.
But another rebound for Ali.
He is really doing the job on the boards for Westlake this evening.
Royal has got that look to me in those hands that he wants the ball and wants to take it to the hole every time.
Let's keep our eye on him down low and see what happens.
There it is up and no foul.
Jacobs got the block and Westlake controls and they're going to spread it out again.
Westlake controlling this end of the floor controlling the tempo.
They've been able to break Milton down a little bit off that dribble and it's worked so far again Westlake without their high scorer Marcus Gordon with a bad ankle averaged 24 points but hanging right in there that's like well we'll get the ball.
And you saw Coach Rogers at the half saying, Hey, we got other guys that can do it and they do have size and hanging right in there.
Westlake Nine offensive rebounds in that first half.
Stu That's a huge number against a team like Milton something you brought up his possession becomes that much more important without Thornton and these little out of bounds chase loose balls could make the difference Whoosh like that's going to be a turnover.
Speaking of loose balls and turnovers in the middle.
So almost halfway through the third quarter, Milton hanging all by two against a determined Westlake team who goes back to that zone Defense Well, when you lose 24 points out of your life, your margin for error goes way down.
STU You really have to value every possession and the little things like you say, take care of the basketball, block out, get good shots.
All of those things become even more important when you lose that many points.
Milton taken the time, slowed it down, going against a very active and very persistent Westlake zone defense outside to the three Oh good easy shot up inside Loyd missed it and it's a jump ball possession hero Westlake so they're doing those little things Herb you're absolutely right to stay in this game that John Parker had a wide open look couldn't get it to go down and Milton had a real easy little follow couldn't get it down here You see it through.
He's got that ball Couldn't get it down.
So big break there for Westlake They dodged the bullet.
Now have a chance to knock this ballgame up State interesting defense, but he's got north the big guy at the point all the defense with those long arms 131 zone Westlake taking the time you got to be careful about 131 with the double team in the corner blocked up Let's see what the call is and beyond.
Harris got his shot blocked and he went back and tried to steal it back and committed the foul.
Milton just tonight to go look invincible at a dogfight tonight with a determined Westlake team without the leading scorer in the zone looking for the openings underneath up and that's what he can do.
Well I don't know if he and Scott breaks it down with that dribble drive and he knows Milt is going to be camped out in that corner.
He dribble drives, breaks the defense down, and then just lays it to Scott in the corner.
Oh, the back like it did he.
Jacobs did a little fancy for the big guys.
Might be a little frenetic a lot of back that's a lot of back to throw it behind so with 434 left third quarter Milton up by five Westlake 3328.
We're back in a moment.
But see this broadcast of today's games is made possible in part by the following broadcast of this program is made possible in part by the Georgia High School Association.
The GSA would like to thank State Farm for their support of high school sports programing on GPB.

State Farm wants what you want safe driving for you and your family.
Welcome back live to the Good at Boys five basketball Championship.
And what a game we have had Milton up by five 3328.
Take me the rest of the way with this Westlake team status quo.
Well they need to hang close.
They need to score down here without there.
Again, we put I don't want to harp on it too much, but 24 points a game out of your lineup here and 12 rebounds is huge.
So every time down they've got to get a good shot, a good look and they've got to play great defense.
They're down five.
This Milton team can put things on the board in a hurry.
So important last 4 minutes of this third quarter for sure Milton with the ball looking at that Westlake zone as they have all evening is the man with the touch let's go this time with the jam and that John Parker was there for it.
But those are the kind you got to make in a state championship game.
Don't try to dunk it if you can't.
Well, there we see it.
Don't the at the point of that defense with those long arms extending Westlake a little further from the hoop and they want to be but it just makes you slow down your offense you can't make the passes you want you have to throw the float passes.
There's the steal going the other way.
Let's see what happens.
Milton has numbers, don't need it, but maybe they should have looked it up in the West.
Led to a defense going back.
But here we are, four on one.
Jacobs, the big guy up and goes down.
And I think I felt the floor vibrate a little.
You got to have some guts to step in front of him going to the basket.
McDonough's thank God John Parker may have got fouled.
He and Scott were both there.
Let's see it on the replay.
Six, eight, £300.
And you're right, you mentioned it earlier tonight.
He gets up and down really?
Well, if you're just joining us, he's going to central Florida on a football scholarship.
We're out in front of that fast break.
And Scott did get him and the big guy's got a nice touch and he's going to be getting that.
Is he a defensive lineman?
I would imagine.
I believe he is.
I'm not sure.
But I think the coaches will play him anywhere he wants to play.
So he's going to have some quarterback scampering and wants to play basketball there.
That's also more two more big free throws there.
Stewart Can't emphasize that enough.
Boy, it's really important for Westlake to knock down those charity tosses Milton attacking and look at that Scott with the push off great defense by the Westlake Guard right there.
Shannon Scott puts it off a little return total total looking a little concerned Romeo Lewis straight defense is in Scott space and made him push off Jacobs we've been informed is an offensive tackle okay and I think big enough to play guard at the time Westlake against this Milton 131 defense that's good time trying to split the defense They will tell you you don't do the zone with the dribble J gets inside blocked and who plays off the dodge on Parker's foot Royale with the block on Jacobs Two big guys battling inside here we see the block and another block.
But look at West like they never give up.
They're battling on every possession forced the turnovers resetting 320 to go third quarter five Hey boys high school basketball championship What a storyline we've had with what's like losing their leading scorer early but hanging on hang with John to get around that looks a little short at the 17th was there to get it Moses it up again I go and we're going the other way.
Yeah, a little frustration on Jacobs if he got his shot blocked, doing some good work on the boards, couldn't get it back in among the trees and a rare three pointer by Westlake.
They really haven't shot.
I think that's only their third three pointer of the evening.
So they're really value in the basketball.
They're not trying to do things they know they shouldn't be doing.
And again, a three point game, you just feel like Milton's on the verge of breaking it open.
But they Westlake just hanging tough hanging tough.
That's all they want to do is take it down to the final 5 minutes and have a shot Middleton going against is now a man to man defense by this looks like team up and out of bounds just got over for the block I laid down on the bench for a while looking for him to get back in there Tony Jacobs man in the middle and doing a pretty good job so far through 44/3 quarter, three point game as the inbound and often a beautiful, struck, sweet shot by John Parker on that one.
Parker just a junior he'll be back but he doesn't care about a senior tonight's tonight one hand pass inside of Jacobs Nice left handed move and off the board for the big guy.
The big guy got his body between himself and royal on that one.
One going to let up.
Oh, my goodness.
That's all right.
He's going to call an intentional foul ever naughty going to the hoop and that looks a little dangerous is Anthony Jacobs.
And we'll see a replay on this.
Well, he got him high, didn't go under him, but it did hit him.
You got to be going for the ball that he got some ball and I think it looked a lot worse than it was when he got a big body like that.
It always does.
I mean, it looked like he tried to grab him towards the end.
Yeah, it's about a £60 discrepancy there looked like.
But again, just a tough play.
Nothing cheap there ever nasty at the line with a great stroke.
What was it, One more 13 points, four of eight.
Most of those coming we outside and now.
No, no.
Get the ball out of bounds.
So a chance for a four point or five point swing if they can convert here and you brought it up earlier, you look for those runs by Milton and something could change it and if you West like you can't let this affect you and let it be a four point play Well when you lose that many points, it's tough for you to come from being down state.
It's just really tough to manufacture offense and just got to hang tough and and try to keep it close.
So anything can happen.
You get down eight or ten points.
It's it's tough to come back, but we're not at that stage yet for sure.
Milton a little trouble inbounding the ball working it around again.
Westlake in a zone for most of the evening Now man to man George Roy trying to find something going and that's the man Well he wants it but pulls it back outside.
Good defense by Westlake on this trip.
Got it to the hoop turnover.
Yeah, Westlake has it.
We're going the other way.
Careful.
Don't call.
Good call.
And it is getting wild.
And we've got three on one.
Oh, no rebound And Julie Arroyo with the bucket Westlake needs to get control here They're getting a little out of control.
Absolutely.
Just towards the end of the third quarter, baby, pull it out and take your time and simmer down little body there as Janet Scott picks up the foul.
Got him with the block and Westlake getting at that pace that they don't want to play let's to that that favors when you're going up and down the floor like that so now the big trip here at seven down Westlake needs a bucket or some free throws 130 keep it close Anything's going to happen in that fourth quarter Westlake going against that 131 Milton defense long three pointer No good rebound will be Westlake Avery Central Do they go back outside Jake it's over the big guy wants to take it back That's his move.
A little tiny left hand but no good and it will remain in Westlake's box for the big guys working it, working inside.
Can't get it to go down.
Didn't get the kind bounce.
And a little surprise.
We haven't seen Ali again underneath Jacobs And what do we have We got a foul here that's the fifth team foul on Milton Bounce.
Oh I tell you what, Jacobs is trying to pick up the slack.
Just about a minute left in this third quarter.
Westlake hanging tough in a11 and a pretty effective 131 Gilder outside.
No good other way we go there should be a gimme up and no good Tried to jab what are we going to the line as John Parker has some hops here we see the replay guys on Parker six two.
He'll take it out and try to throw it down on.
Anybody?
George Great, great athlete, great football player, wide receiver, only a junior being recruited by the likes of Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech basketball.
We could see him as a wide receiver going up to the football pool, pulling the ground.
He has got a vertical jump, which you mentioned.
It is the alley.
He's going to check back in.
He's going to leave Jacobs in the game.
So he's going to go with a little bigger lineup.
Thornton up there, he just he can't put any weight on that ankle.
And man, that's a terrible break for Westlake and for the fans because look how close Westlake's been able to keep this thing without their star in there.
But a big trip down the floor now is Coach Rogers is going to hold it for one try to go in with a nine point deficit.
I would I would think so.
But let's see, 45 to go in this third quarter.
Well, it's like slowing it down.
And Herb, I think the goal for one Smart play by David Boyd, he knew he was getting broke down by the penetration.
That's a smart play.
You get the open shot take it.
But David Boyd went to the zone to stop that dribble penetration and that's pretty much work.
He's cut that off, make Westlake work a little longer to get a shot.
Now, Milton, going for that final shot of the third quarter, spreading it out fourth quarter big possession Herb taking a little momentum or do you not do that fourth quarter?
Well, they'll scowl, try to break him down and look for either oil or Nulty or John Parker.
Anybody?
Anybody can shoot it up.
CARTER And there you go.
PARKER with the three.
And that is how we are going to end this third quarter a play.

Gerald our very our pleasure to be bringing you the game.
Take me into the huddle Herb Westlake.
What do they have to do to make it a game down the stretch?
Well, do they have enough left in their tank physically and emotionally?
Because they've had to play harder than that?
Hard to say.
You play it harder than you thought you were going to have to, but they have.
And they've got 15 offensive rebounds in the state in this ballgame by sheer hustle and grit.
But, you know, sooner or later talent can overcome and you got guys taking shots and trying to score that aren't used to doing that.
I'm sure Jacobs has taken more shots in the paint than he probably has in any game this year.
That is Parker with that easy layup inside had one and Haley will go to the line and that's the guy.
At least one of them has had to take over down the stretch alley is going to have to do it and here you see it the big guy went up and got it, kissed it off the glass from the front.
And that's a tough shot there.
But again, when you're looking around and you're down eight points to a good team or ten and guys that aren't used to having to do a lot of scoring or having to create shots and it makes it tough for.
So you got to play great defense, man your back boards and make sure that you get good shots and make your free throws.
It's this one and it will be within nine and he does so.
4447 time out.
Milton So good pressure.
You know, we're talking so much about thought young man and a sprained ankle you can bounce back from but you know this is a kid who has a great future he's already signed with club so you don't want to take any chances.
You know, the kid wants to play more than anybody.
Yeah, well, you probably can't hurt in echoing the words, but he can barely get up and move around over there, so it's not a chance of getting hurt.
But let's take a look at what we got coming up.
Well, what a we had a Wolfpack tomorrow at 930.
It all starts.
So join us.
You can get a ball early.
That's followed by a ton of action at the Macon Metroplex, sir.
It'll be Savannah Christian.
That's Wesleyan Girls Action.
That boy single-A.
What's the Academy against?
Wesleyan.
Two teams on a roll and that'll be a three.
You forget for the area.
One undefeated team going against a team with only four losses.
Thomasville and Greater Atlanta.
Christian, Atlanta, Christian only lost one game.
Back to the action here.
Allie went down, tipped over zone people.
Westlake ends up with the ball with 730, bringing it the other way.
But Milton had the numbers couldn't take advantage.
But Nulty comes up with the steal and they have the numbers but they pull it back and you got to watch out.
And all of a sudden Westlake has the numbers that don't look down.
So up and down we go.
And Herb brought it up all the turnovers, but Westlake recovered to get the ball back, drive through all the boards.
Ali tried and just it will be Westlake ball awful close call look like it could have hit Ali's hand but the ref was right there or Westlake could use a3i think are about 149 or ten in the ballgame tonight from three point distance.
Well you caught it.
I thought he was going to pull the trigger.
That is a errant pass the little tat and let's see where the ref said it is going to be.
Westlake Ball.
We're at that dangerous point here that you were talking about.
They were in a Westlake turning up the heat.
Now they're going to pick up full court and against a team like Milton's, they can start slamming it on and turn this thing into a rout in a hurry.
So let's see what happens.
Let's go to jail, Albury, for an update from the sideline.
Hey, it's doing that last time out.
Coach Boyd told his team that he wants everything to go to the basket.
On the other side, Coach Rogers was telling his team he wants them to switch on the pick and also to continue playing tough.
Back over to use Duke.
Well, they both play tough down the stretch.
641 left them up by nine.
There was a timeout 60.
So Westlake wants to discuss it, want to take it to the hall, want to go to the line.
The clock is not their enemy yet.
It's not their enemy yet.
Well a tough team, Milton, to put the pressure on.
They got two great guards and Scott and Dijon Parker and then they had two great big guys.
They can make the alley oop, too.
So it's a dangerous time again when you're pressuring them.
I'm wondering how the Masters came to be in Augusta.
Well, here's a hint.
General Sherman played a role.
Watch Augusta's master plan, A GPB originally Easter Sunday, April 4th at 8 p.m. at GPB Television.
We're sharing as well.
I think this has been a tremendous game.
You can you can look 2020 and say, what if Shorten would have been in there?
Who knows?
Maybe the other guys wouldn't have picked up as much as well.
That's true.
They're always going to look back and say that, but this game isn't over.
You know, they've been cold.
They can hit a couple of threes, some defensive stops.
This ball game is a long way from over.
It's a scrappy Westlake crew and if they can get a bucket here, cut it down to seven, or if they can throw in a three, cut it to six.
And it's a two possession game.
Westlake In possession.
Milton has been in that 131 zone defense for most of the second half and they continue to be at it and everything is going to the hoop and there's a turnover that you just can't afford again trying to create when it's not there.
And that comes from having the start of the ballgame inside.
Beautiful Pass, Easy pocket, and that's how you do it with Jordan Lloyd getting the hoop underneath Westlake taking it to the hole every single trip and we'll see what you got.
Looks like a hold underneath the alley with another put back Got fouled and he's shown me enough on the offensive end.
Well it's going to be Newbridge a lot.
I try to get Ali some looks inside when he hasn't scored he's been fouled and he's a good free throw shooter for his size.
I think Westlake would be better off doing that than some of the wild drives they're taking here in the last couple of minutes.
Jeff Newbury to the line Senior will shoot to average 14 points a game this season sort of ran the show Big strong gets six rebounds two in the first one is good and Westlake continues to knock down their free throws and that's helped keep them in this ballgame.
We'll take it to the hoop, stop the clock, get points.
That's what you want to do at this point.
Something it up.
Second one, good full court pressure.
That's Herb Westlake with that full court press.
Well under control, looking to run and put that back and take it easy and pull it out Westlake in them Anthony and have been in the zone much of today or this evening good tall Charles Shannon Scott scuse me.
And now it's the opposite way Herb this Milton team starting to turn it over and give extra possessions to Westlake.
Well good defensive pressure there in San and Scott very quick but Westlake was able to create the turnover and continues in the 131 Westlake looking to attack underneath remember coach told him to take it to the hoop Evan Milton's still a 4.67 and turnovers Westlake 16.
Milton 11 When you got your big stud out you can't turn it over more than the other team.
Well again that's from having him out there got guys trying to create options that aren't used to it.
You run in different stuff.
Still plenty of time left for this Westlake team.
They need to run, but there's another turnover and they have the numbers up and in and floating in nicely and it doesn't get that much easier.
Parker with the lay up he's had a couple of questions.
Another time out you could see the coach wanting to keep this thing within the realm of possibilities as it's 5239.
Herb We talked about it all night.
This is Milton, Tim's explosive.
Yeah.
They're going to take advantage of scoring lot of points off the turnovers and again Westlake just looking to try to find some way to get some offense but Milton is a good defensive team and Coach Rogers a good move by going to the 131 and let's take a look at that earlier final Southwest Acab your girls champion for ages 65 to 45 of the Mets West Woodfield Mays had a rough time with Miller Grove this evening, 67 to 35.
All these earlier today.
Norcross a winner.
We saw this one.
What a game it was.
7663.
NORCROSS Overall, again, you won't see too many better games than a 58 game winning streak went by the wayside tonight.
Yeah.
Riordan and not last lost since the 2008 final So just an amazing run by them.
Well, you know what that reminded me?
It reminds me of UConn's run and the reason it reminds me of UConn's run is we saw Maya moore, it seems like yesterday, but we saw her play in this very same arena.
And the most maybe the most impressive player that I've seen in a long time.
Both girls were boys Out on the break.
Out on the break.
Coming up, I never saw Maya moore make a bad play in all of the championship games that I called in her career.
And I still think she's the best considering, you know, the level of talent, boys or girls.
She was the best high school player I've ever seen come out of Georgia where she could dominate a game.
There's a kick as Milton stays in that 131 zone off the bench tells a story.
Well and those are mostly by cozy Ali coming off filling in for Thornton in the post.
He's done a great job but Milton without a bench point.
But they don't need him.
They get so many from the starters.
Westlake needs a hoop and they need it badly.
They need it quickly.
5 minutes to go.
A little bit of a push up and not exactly the shot they wanted but rebound and good again offensive rebound.
And Westlake has been able to hang tight or close enough just with their offensive board work and that just shows some hustle and determination and Coach Boyd wants them to spread it out a little, take a little clock down as we approach the 430 mark in the fourth quarter, the five year championship.
And this is going to be a tough team to get the ball away from.
Everybody can handle Herb.
Everybody's got some quick things, including the big guys.
Fourth quarter offense for Milton Royall with the ball can handle it and the big guys can handle it and mean it.
You're behind the eight ball.
Is Westlake playing that tough defense where you're not at the point where you want to start fouling yet hoping for an unforced error, as they say in Tennessee, you almost got one.
Not a bad play.
You take a chance that maybe the ref will call it when you reach in from behind, but they'll call that about 75% of the time around.
Houston, that's the fifth foul on Westlake.
So there's not the one and one yet.
They've got another one.
They can go for on the steal before they put Milton at the line.
Jordan Roy to inbound the ball for this double team It looks like they're just set to run out to block and take all the championship.
They don't want to put it in the complete cooler too soon inside ball was loose.
Back outside we go is Shannon Scott takes it back outside.
I think this is what we're going to see until we see a foul.
What do you think about the strategy?
There's the foul.
Well, that's the sixth.
Now, the next one to put him on the line.
I don't think he was wanting to foul there.
Yeah, I'm still saying it.
You go another 30 seconds and then you got to have to have to start solid because it's a three possession game and probably even more than that since Westlake really hasn't shown us the ability to strike and deep three point land in this ballgame.
Well, Milton's coach David Boy has been here before.
11 regional titles, Elite eight, nine times seven Final Fours.
We're going to go the opposite way.
All right.
Every possession huge for the Westlake Lions now.
And not only that, here they've got to pull the trigger fairly quick when they come down and we're out of the 30 seconds and get it up, get a good look and get it in or get it out again, This is where I might look for all the guys shown me that he can play some basketball in the paint.
He can also knock his free throws down, see what they do coming apart.
330 left in this fourth quarter boys five eight championship Westlake with the ball looking inside has pulled the trigger yet but you and the big time block that was royal Yeah they will spread it out again and you are getting very close to the time when you are going to have to foul trouble.
All 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Milton, with a nine point lead.
Royal look going inside breaking up doors up in Nice two points.
Great move under control.
Ali did a good job not to fouling Westlake knows they have to pull it this where you sometimes might want to force one but you got to get it inside taking it off a lot of time to get a shot off there it is short.
And that is going to be Milton.
He's got his ball so well.
Now you do foul.
You're going to have to put Milton on the line and hope they miss some and you're going to have to come down and fire threes.
The guys are down 11 with 243 Westlake with only 13. shot the whole evening.
Here's a dunk.
He'll be right.
It looked like a dunk, looked like a hand here and they're going to pull it back out.
You're right here.
We got a foul fairly quickly here.
And this Milton Dean is a very good foul shooting team.
Do 2726 left in a game, almost a steal.
Good hustle Westlake just barely missing a turnover here you got to admire the credit this Westlake teams throughout great tremendous effort whether you're big guy on the bench and making this a big game this is a great team to turn left 50 to 41 as Milton will start a parade to the foul line.
You know, it's just a shame to have this thing happen like we had in the ballgame early with Thornton going down because this Westlake team deserved better.
They're going to, remember this one and say, what if the rest of their lives and their fans as well?
And but you can't take any away from being away from Milton.
They can't control that.
Sometimes a team will have a letdown when a great player from the other team goes out.
But Milton really overcame that.
They've played their game and they've won him a state championship.
They can hold on for 208.
And David Boyd will be the only coach in Georgia basketball history to win at four different schools.
Well, he he said last night he was sure his team could play any better.
I talked to him before this win and he said we were lights out.
Let's see if we can do it again.
Just an excellent two well-coached teams.
Yeah, Coach Rogers had a great game plan and unfortunately he didn't have his main cog his plans last, but just for a couple of minutes in this ballgame.
But again, Westlake can hold their heads high in place.
As hard as any team could be asked to play at, least stepping in and doing a yeoman job in the paint and on the boards.
But again, when you when you got guys looking for shots, looking for offense and they're not used to doing it, it's going to take out of what you're used to doing and it's just tough to get the job done.
Jordan Lloyd at the line, only a junior, so he's part of this Milton High pack that will be back.
They return everybody, nobody graduating from this team.
Westlake as we mentioned, seven seniors.
So not the way they wanted to go out.
But as Herb said, nothing to be ashamed of.
Milton One of the stories stayed in that 131 zone the second half.
It was very effective.
This year, a lot of people thought Milton was going to win.
This went in a blowout with Marcus Thornton playing and without him playing.
And now finally, a three point shot by Tony back to the sixth and still a manageable loose, you know, lead.
It's a three possession games do well this is what you've been calling for.
You would call a 4 to 3 pointer.
Well, they could have used a couple.
They've had a couple.
It looked like they might go down.
But that's only their second win of the.
But now you put the full court pressure on, you go for the steal.
And if you don't get it, you're going to have to foul in the first four or 5 seconds and put Milton on the line again and hope they miss the nearest guy.
If you don't get the steal, you're absolutely right.
Two coaches with a ton of experience, a ton of success.
Coach Rodgers is of Westlake.
You're looking at that huddle said 30 players on the college basketball scholarships in his career.
Yeah, well, that whole area over there Ben Hill and all that area around there just south Atlanta with, you know, the great players that have come out of there over the last two years and some of the other schools in that area.
It's just a real hotbed for basketball players.
And Coach Rodgers is going to continue to get players and he's going to continue to have good teams at Westlake, played his college ball, did Coach Rodgers at Morehouse.
So well, his team reflects, you could tell in the way he looked when they're asking him about Marcus Thorn.
He said, we'd love to have him, but we're going to play.
We came to play and they certainly did.
And we're happy to hear Herb.
They haven't foul mediately and losing precious seconds and someone's got to have somebody and finally they do.
So John Parker will go to the line.
Probably not the best guy to foul, but you don't really have much choice out here.
You got a foul at this point.
Jacobson The big guy coming back then I give this credit, kid.
A lot of credit.
He tried to pick up the slack.
He went inside.
I mean, he's a big guy, played a lot of minutes and did a good job.
Yeah.
And he's a guy that's usually out there to rebound and play some defense.
And they, you know, made some nice moves inside.
That's not his forte.
Parker quietly with 17 points just a quiet 17, but a big 17 and a pretty good crew out here tonight.
And you know, we got the stinger with us now, Mike Glenn.
And, you know, I didn't know about the all time leading field goal percentage shoot of the Atlanta Hawks.
Mike, when you might think three point but field goal percentage and that's from a guy that was shooting 20 footers all his career so rocket as good as anybody's ever played in that league 117 less 5444 Milton about a minute away from a state high school championship short again at his controls it will be Milton they call the shot out and you get just about put this one on ice here hanging over there and I know this one is just about in ice chest and I'll tell you Georgia Public Broadcasting spared no expense in bringing you quality high school sports There you see it in our football broadcasts.
You see it in the basketball broadcasts.
I didn't realize that you had been a play by play announcer in the NBA, The Detroit Press.
I did.
I did color on the NBA network for a number of years and enjoyed it.
But I tell folks earlier, when I was at Channel two or doing some stuff with Turner, the highlight of my year has been coming and doing these school games.
I mean, it was the purest of basketball.
It's great.
The fans and and the players that have come through here, I can't imagine.
I think I've been doing this for eight or nine years.
Many of the players that I've seen that's been unbelievable from the KMI Browns, as we mentioned, Maya moore Powers and Dwight Howard, I can't imagine all the players are saying, Yeah I keep threatening.
And one of these days we're going to put together a highlight reel of all the great players and and games we've had on Georgia Public broadcasting and football and basketball.
It's just it's just amazing the talent in this state and high school basketball.
And people are very, very lucky in Georgia public broadcasting to just say have a great and it's only going to continue to grow and get better.
And we want to bring more and more high school sports to the people of Georgia.
John Parker We go to the line and it's about final score time now.
And some of these players are going to go to the next level for sure and maybe even beyond that as Milton team kind of reminds me of Kentucky.
Kentucky was four first round NBA draft choices in their line up and Milton with four Division one prospects their lineup So you know when they when they come out and play a good game and they have tonight they're going to be very tough to beat especially when you lose your star in the first couple of minutes of play like Westlake did this evening minutes ago.
But no one comes up.
And if you're a coach, you never can see that clock going down fast enough.
I don't care how.
How about you, Robert?
George bought it over there.
Just saying, don't foul, Just don't foul.
Let's let this thing roll.
So with a minute to go, here we go.
The final of our high school state championships from here in Gwinnett.
Don't forget all the action tomorrow for making starting at 930.
So we hope you join us then.
Well, look, the rebound controls and then wide open.
Don't see him Hold it back.
No need to just wear down that clock, step down the out of bounds line and go to Westlake.
You got to credit Westlake defense to I mean, 55 points is Milton teams used to score a lot points and Milton has really shut them down defensively just couldn't generate the offense and I'm not going to mention his name again but well they've really played some good defense and did a job on the boards that you wouldn't have expected.
I agree.
They also slowed it down.
So I'm sorry that's not affected.
That's true.
What they had to the defense was a big part of it.
It's like a jump ball.
And that's going to be Westlake's ball in the well.
Well, it's never been the game has never gotten out of hand.
No.
You know, Coach Rogers has really done a masterful job of keeping his kids in this ball game and great job again.
On the offensive boards, showing a lot of determination, got a lot of shots.
Again, just did not have a good shooting night.
And that's going to happen when the situations like it was this evening.
Well, you know, we were waiting for it.
You get that feeling sometimes sitting courtside.
That bill is going to make a run, but they never did it.
And David Boyd, this not like the way the end of this ball game is turning out, as now it's a nine point game.
That's what the half court said.
What the heck are you guys doing?
The game's not over.
Well, he's got young guys and he's still teaching them.
He has high points.
Well, that's what a great coach does.
You're supposed to finish the way a game the right way.
You never know when you're going to be in this situation again.
And stranger things have happened.
I don't know if you're old enough to know that you're older than me.
And I remember say you are old enough.
I'm old enough to remember just Carolina made a comeback.
I forget who gets to 18 seconds.
They score 9.5 points.
Exactly right.
They couldn't score nine points in a half this year.
This year?
What a difference a year makes.
Melton's inbound with just 13 seconds left in this ballgame.
They get it in just a matter of shooting some free throws to Shannon Scott.
It was Coach Rogers still shuffling players in and out.
He hadn't drawn up the white flag yet.
No.
Mark Anthony Jacobs getting ready to come back in a up first one.
Good.
Janet's got a good looking player too, with a good touch.
You're looking at guys that are all coming back, every single one of them.
On that note, the team, well, there's nothing, no gimmes in that conference or that league.
They come out of, you know, the region.
This is one of the toughest, maybe the toughest region in the state, maybe in the southeast, with all the teams that are in that region that the Milton plays in.
So it's no gimme for them to come out of there again next year, even though they're a great team.
Well, they're counting down to a championship in Milton, just a matter of the final, the clock running down and in five basketball Milton over Westlake 56 to 46.
Milton is your five.
Hey, boys school basketball champions And that's a sweet win for Milton.
After being here last year and getting beat by Wheeler, They come back one year later and take it home.
This huge wheeler crowd here.
And boy, they are enjoying this one.
Milton Excuse me.
There's a final building, 56 Westlake 46.
We'll be back to close things out.
