Regions Bank.
The Georgia Lottery.
By viewers like you and the Georgia High School Association, who wish to thank the Georgia Dodge Dealers, State Farm and naturally Press for their support of GHC athletic activities.
Live from the arena at the Met Center, it's the GHC Boys five, a state basketball championship on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Tonight's championship matchup features the Eagles of Milton High, who come into the championship game with a season record of 24 and seven against the Wildcats of Wheeler, who also enters the title game with a 24 and seven mark.
And we welcome you to Courtside here at the Arena, Charles Ward alongside Herb White.
Eric Hunter joins us momentarily.
Herb five championship Tonight features one team that's trying to put its seal on Georgia high school basketball for this decade and another that's trying to get his name etched into the championship books for the first time.
Yeah, well, there's a good chance some coach is going to win his fifth championship tonight, Charles.
Actually, it's a certainty because David Boyd is going for his fifth championship at four different schools.
And of course, Doug Lipscomb going for his fifth championship with the Wheeler Wildcats.
So something's got to give tonight.
A lot of people think it may be a little bit of a mismatch because of the youth with the Middleton team.
You know, they start fourth, three sophomores, a junior and one senior.
So a really young team.
And when they say a child shall lead them, they're not kidding when they talk about Milton.
Look at this line by young Julian Royall in the semifinal game.
18 points, 11 rebounds, eight blocked shots in that ballgame.
He's a66 post man.
We turn around and look at the Wheeler Wildcats.
Of course, we know David Doug Lipscomb style of play, a lot of pressure, a lot of taking it to the hoop.
Ari Stuart, a six foot seven wing man, he can slash and dash and stop and pop.
Take a look at the starting lineup for the Eagles.
Hamilton Shannon Scott TJ Williams in the backcourt Roy all the center the John Parker and Evan Nulty the forwards for Milton that young team from Milton High School will have to contend with a team in Wheeler that really doesn't have a whole lot of depth.
But the players that play for Atlanta real tough.
Well, we know Wheeler style, as I mentioned a moment ago, they're going to put constant pressure on you, full court.
They're going to try to turn you over and score off turnovers and they like to shoot the three and they made about eight or nine the other night.
Here's a guy that'll make eight or nine in one game, Ari Stewart, six foot seven wingman with going to go to Wake Forest and he can take it to the basket or he can stop and pop and drop it from outside.
Stuart what a five performance in the semifinal ballgame to get Wheeler here.
As we take a look at the starting lineup for the Wildcats, Phil Taylor, who's had a phenomenal play off four wheeler Jerome, Joey, Joey, Jerome, Carl Kafka, Ari Stuart and Richard Howell, the five four coach Doug Lipscomb and the Wheeler Wildcats getting set for this championship ballgame against the Eagles of Milton High.
So we should be getting set for some good basketball action here.
Announcements are being handled by David Witherow.
He'll give you the starting lineup.
Now let's meet the starting lineups first for the Milton Eagles and guard a 6 to 7 door number 12.
Shalom, Scott at forward six for sophomore number 23.
Deshawn Porter at center a67.
Sophomore Number 25.
John Roy Oh right guard a61 senior number 30 3tj Williams And that forward on six more freshman number 45.
Evan Nulty, the head coach of Milton is David boy and now let's meet the starters for the Wheeler Wildcats.
Right guard a six for junior number for Joey Jerome at guard a62 sophomore Number ten Porter at guard, a six foot junior.
Number 11, Phil Taylor at forward a66 Senior number 20.
Eric Stewart And at forward a67 senior number 21.
Richard Oh, the head coach of Wheeler is Doug Lipscomb.
This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station.
We are almost set for a tip off on the five eight championship.
But before we do that, Eric Hunter is standing by at satellite with two very important guests.
Eric, I've got Bob Howden, the general manager of Georgia Public Broadcasting, and Dr. Ralph Swearingen, the executive director of the Georgia High School Association.
Now, this relationship with TV started in 1997.
Today, you've got some great news about continuing this relationship.
I certainly do.
My predecessor, Tom McGill, about 12 years ago, I thought had a brilliant idea, and that is to start a relationship with Georgia Public Broadcasting to telecast the Georgia high school events.
It just makes sense because the mission statements of the two organizations are so similar, and we've been extremely pleased with the relationship, and we are glad to announce that we've agreed on a three year extension to our contract.
And the great production quality of these events are going to continue for three more years.
And Bob, three more years, that's going to be exciting for everyone at Georgia Public Broadcasting.
It is every year.
It's an all hands project project for us.
The high school football is the biggest audience that we have Every year.
We serve all the state of Georgia and we really look forward to it.
And I'm very excited about this contract because it really shows our spine, our partnership.
We're going to be doing a lot of things in new media.
We just don't know what they are yet, but we're going to work on them together to figure them out.
Thank you very much, Dr. Gee.
We look forward to it.
And Charles and her by check this new agreement does include you, too, as well.
Thanks, Eric, But we heard you were out.
Really great news from Dr. Savings and Bob Haldeman from GPB that this relationship gets to continue.
And hats off to you, Herb White, for your involvement in making this all possible as well.
Well, thanks, Charles.
It's just it's a present to the people of Georgia, what it is.
That's what it's all about.
And this is all about five boys action right now.
Milton coming away with the basketball after a turnover by the Wildcat.
Oh, Charles, He just don't get to better coaches in a high school basketball game.
This should be a really well-played game.
Now, again, this Milton team very, very young but they may be so young that they're too young to even be scared.
In fact, that's what Coach David Boyd is on record as saying that young about to days the don't know about the pressure but something different for Wheeler opening up in the zone they're usually that pressure man to man but they take it away all on the floor now finally picked up and cleared by Karl Popper Parker had it tapped out of bounds from behind.
So it will stay with the Wildcats on their end of the floor.
And we talked about the great class coming out of Georgia in two years.
There you see David Boyd, well over 500 wins in his career.
Charles And to win championships at four different schools is just amazing.
And inside the paint it's Howell to give it back outside Cochran for three the shots off the mark backside rebound fault for on the mainland Wildcats wearing basketball over to the Eagles now Richard Howell's carrying about 2530 more pounds and anybody on them maybe even two guys on the Melton team.
So they're going to have to contend with him and Ari Stuart underneath.
And that's going to be a key tonight as well.
Lipscomb in his 17th season at Wheeler.
And just as a title, perhaps one school that's taken different routes and gotten the job done now to get him some rarefied air by winning a fifth in this decade, Howell handles down the floor a left corner with the pass to Taylor.
Taylor had it taken away.
Here comes Shannon Scott.
Left side streets reverse in Georgetown Beautiful used the basket to shield off the big man and lead it home.
Charles Shannon's got one of those sophomores on that Eagle team down at the block.
Taylor got an A-plus.
Got it.
The ball.
Shannon Scott comes with some pretty good basketball genes.
His father, Charlie Scott, all-American at North Carolina, played in the NBA for many years.
One of the all time great guards in the SCC tied at two apiece.
Remember?
Charlie Scott Well as an out TJ Williams runner in the paint Williams is sure to play 57 points ball game Bill McNair Johnny Walton Charles Dunn Campbell in this five a championship right side Joey Jerome way away from the basket now penetrates right side all the way through shot costly rejected good defensive work by Jordan oil on the inside during six man to man don't know up man to man and I talked about that sophomore class in the four eight game is coming up his two years and a lot of them are playing on this built team Charles three of these guys are going to be a heck of a players by the time this season.
Richard Howell Way downtown drills a three for the Wildcats all at six eight North Carolina state signee inside the paint Williams will work it back outside the arc left corner it's Parker Parker with a three pointer and he is true to the line with shooting to start this ballgame off Eagles by two Taylor up top how behind the arc looking inside cross dribbled out how inside the paint fought it up toward the rack a good defensive work by Milton on the inside they got a three on two all the way to Iraq the Scott Wilson's inside the paint basketball tap by Charlie Jerome out of bounds that will stay with Milton Time out on the floor.
He was called by Coach Boyd and you saw you talk about good defensive 422 remaining first quarter Eric Punter standing by at sideline Eric Well I'm here with Ron Tesch, the principal of Milton High School.
Now 30 seconds isn't enough time, but tell us some of the great things you're doing academically.
Well, probably the most distinguished honor we've just received is we were the only Georgia high school named as a National School of Excellence just recently.
We're in Washington to accept that award on behalf of our school in addition to that, our SAT scores, ATC scores, they're all through the roof.
We're on everybody's list of the top schools in Georgia.
Thanks for your time.
Enjoy the rest of the game.
Back to you guys.
Thank you.
Eric Milton High School.
Founded in 1921, over 2000 students attended principal test.
Looks like it could be somebody in the Crimmins family.
It's got a full patch there.
And I got to tell you, Charles, Dick Williams and Dave Gardner, we're talking about your game board here with the preparation.
It's just unbelievable.
All the information you have on.
I told him it's kind of like when I was in school, when I need some help, I just lean over and look at your paper.
But we do what we can do.
Jumper out front by two.
That one was off the mark.
The rebound comes clear inside the royal.
Now I'll walk it back outside the Eagles do across the floor They got adult behind the arc the threes Williams this one is off the mark rebound clear by Jerome up the floor quickly to Taylor Taylor inside the paint that was he scored some stuff Nice ball work on the break goals he tried to stop the ball coming up the floor you don't do that against Wheeler man you turn around run and get in the paint because they're coming at you score at what the dunk basketball back to the Wildcats We're tied at seven Taylor picks the baseline dumped it inside to Jerome Jerome to the glass Nicely done over to No way Jerome The junior averages six points per ballgame Whiteside Williams healthy in the corner squares for a three count It was just excellent ball movement Excellent ball movement I didn't know a freshman had 15 points in the semifinal ballgame, is a good coach and shows up in a hurry.
Stewart works at our top now, gives over to Taylor, Taylor to Howell leading back on the jumper and he got it the ball at the six eight man has really got a feathery touch and see state's got him a good when their Charles at 16 points per outing for Howell on the regular season he Wheeler by one Milton with a basketball Scott handles getting pressure from Taylor three point offering by royal Stewart clears four wheeler Howell surveys from the corner out back across the floor for three it's Taylor missed on the jumper Nulty clears the basketball tech out of bounds by Howell to stay with those You know the amazing thing about Doug Lipscomb the record Charles as we well know, when he doesn't win the state championship, he plays for it.
And he lost three of them to Norcross in the last several years.
That was great.
Norcross teams with Jodie Meeks and some of those folks on a Dirty Martin coach.
And so he's always there at the championship time.
Did you write runner up to Norcross last year?
They defeated Norcross in the quarter finals this year to get to the championship all game.
Williams with the jumper wins off the mark.
Stewart clears a shot short by Taylor Field goals thus far Welcome four of 11 and a lead outside of nine and we haven't had a bad shot in the ballgame yet.
What I mean by that, everybody's getting it off the offense, not forcing anything up.
Just over a minute remaining in this first quarter, Scott works it over to PJ Williams.
Williams, the early starting senior for Milton on the floor behind the arc for three Parker the remmers off the mark Powell clears the and shot Wheeler trying to extend their lead basketball tapped out of bounds by Sean Parker.
It will stay with Wheeler great look by Howell three three quarters at the half court he made the no look pass just missed getting him for the layup strip the call inside no look pass by Howell not the result they wanted on that one no thought would pass first take that one back down so carried away t.j. Williams the handle Jeff Milton plays for the final shot of this first quarter on 30 remaining.
I know David Boyd would be happy to go in with a one point deficit open up this ballgame with this young team against Wheeler that's for sure.
Robert happier with a one point lead if not to PJ Williams cross double in traffic lost it momentarily Middleton trying to get it up get him to travel while the so the Wildcats with 2.4 seconds left I have an opportunity at a basket Howell twice that from midcourt did you get a look at it got a real good look at it couldn't put it down no was at the end of one It's Wheeler.
This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station on the start of the second quarter from the arena for that set of Boys five, a stage championship Wildcats of Eli Lilly with 11 to 10 over the Eagles of note really impressive first quarter basketball by both teams.
Ah yes it's looking like a chess match just like we thought it was going to be Charles and all the Wheeler games we've done.
I don't know if I've ever seen them start in his own defense in the championship game.
A little bit of a surprise, but, you know, it may be a tribute to Coach Boyd's coaching abilities because he knows he can't press his guys and look at that two times, six lead changes.
And unless one team gets really hot from outside, I think it's going to be like this all evening.
Basketball taken away by the Wildcats.
Quickly, up the floor comes Jerome Pass over to Phil Taylor, who gets to play a wheeler.
He committed a turnover in the paint favors tripped on the floor.
Wildcats make him pay for it And that's that's the Wheeler M.O.. For years and years, he'd turn it over.
They're going to make you pay, Charles.
They're going to score off the turnovers.
They run the break as good as any high school team in Georgia ever has.
Basketball all tapped out of bounds.
It will stay with the Eagles on their end of the floor, as well as any high school team in Georgia, I guess I should say.
Not as good.
Just that no team behind the arc for three, we got the meaning Taylor up the floor right side four wheeler now Howell in the corner Nice pass inside from Taylor LAMB by Joey Jones It's a little strong move by Jerome that's four for him he only averages six He gave up boy taking that time out there wildcats getting on a run there with a 15 to 10.
Well Doug Lipscomb may decide and may decide to goes on because he he feels like this team may be a little suspect on their outside shooting although they start off hit a couple of perimeter shots but they haven't in the last few minutes.
We hope you're enjoying our live broadcast coverage.
The best to the Georgia high school basketball and ask you to stay tuned at halftime for your opportunity to become a member of the Georgia Public Broadcasting Family.
As viewers like you that help make great local programs like this possible.
And we thank you for supporting Georgia Public Broadcasting this nightcap here from the arena for that set of the boys five, a state championship.
Consider these teams like we talked about in the Four-Way match up a couple of hours ago.
I heard this is the third meeting between these two teams in the course of this year.
And as is the game before, one of the teams has won two of them, that would be the Wildcats one two this year against Milton.
But this is the young Milton team and they played the Wildcats earlier on and I was talking to Dick Williams.
He said he had Milton earlier in the year and he said they've really, really improved since then, just as you would expect of a team with so many youngsters on.
And we're talking about David Boyd and its team not feeling any pressure.
Coach Boyd had a Jim Mora moment.
We said pressure, pressure.
Don't talk to me about pressure.
These guys are too young.
They don't know what it is.
Well, there's going to be some people feeling pressure in a couple of years playing this.
He can guarantee you take away by the Wildcats up the floor.
Jerome Adams swatted away good recovery by Parker Wildcats down to Nulty Ah Nulty in the paint for the Eagles he missed on the lane pace quickens now back the other way Taylor to the rack his shots off the mark Stewart there with the backside put back give him the basket and he's fouled It's a big exchange There was a great block down here on the other end by Milton Gooden Come up with it Dell John Parker and Milton missed the layup down the other end Nulty And then Stewart again Wheeler made him pay came down missed the shot offensive rebound stuck it back and now going for the three point play Stuart reversed from the line had 19 points in the semifinal ballgame averaging almost 19 over the playoffs.
It's early in the game, Charles, but you got a couple of big possessions coming up here for Milton Nulty in the corner.
Williams now takes the jumper just inside the arc, but he left it off the backside, put back inside by Parker Go good.
But coming to cover that up is Julian Royall for the layup Powell behind the arc fires a three the remmers off of there so easy tap as Karl Parker George Boyd can't like that nobody got a body on the guard coming in there can't have that blocking makes it an eight point lead for the Wildcats Left block now Roy all on the move softly done inside the play by Julian Oil lead at six for Wheeler Jerome to the right side Give and go bounce pass inside Good work by Howell to maintain possession of the basketball Got the lay in and he will go to the line We wanted to throw that down but he saw he wasn't going to get it got the foul he had the presence of mind to take it to the other side of the basket.
Watch.
This goes up once the dunk takes it back to the other side of the rack.
Smart play returns now follow through after the foul that the line on the season 16 points per ballgame over ten rebounds four out Powell converts from the line John Parker works it up top now inside the paint they give it in return as Shannon Scott his shots off back for his own rebound there in traffic had to take it away on the put back Taylor chases down four wheeler inside pass to Stewart Stewart to the rack got it and he got it by the score.
Well again there's a secondary break by Wheeler and you cannot afford to give up the three point baskets if you're going to foul somebody out of there.
Charles, you want to grab that arm, make sure they don't get the layup.
He's going to score two free throws.
Fine.
Here, you see it?
Taylor With a nice dish, just kind of stuck that hand in and didn't really hit him hard enough.
It's not a cheap shot to grab the guy harder in there, make sure he doesn't score the bucket.
You get the foul called anyway, Stewart missed on the free throw 11 point wheeler lead rail has trouble catching up with it.
Finally Dodds gives it over to Scott Scott's jumper in the paint that's off the mark Wheeler wants to run Taylor picked up by Parker Powell behind the arc for three no good Stewart's got the backside rebound out fighting in the paint lost it it eats off the mark Aggressive play by Karl Cockrell in the back court results in a foul.
Well Wheeler's turned it up a notch defensively Charles that's where they're creating this havoc.
Couple of turnovers some four shots by Milton now and law school up for the last couple of minutes.
We'll see if they can regain some composure, get some good looks at the hoop under 4 minutes 30 seconds remaining in the ballgame for the first half.
Wheeler and his own defense now dump it down in the corner with the jumper as wild backside rebound comes clear to score off the floor to Jerome.
Joey Jerome stops pops with a jumper from ten No good voltage to up the floor now for the Eagles kind of take it away in the fourth quarter six six man trying to go behind his back against two quick guards.
You could see it coming.
But Junior Phil Taylor handles the basketball left block.
Now back up top bounce pass from Powell.
Inside they go to Joe Jerome who got the layup Nice interior passing from the wildcat sets up down the floor.
And welcome back to the arena for that center.
Eric Hunter standing by with principal Ed Beyer.
Eric.
Yes, I am here with Ed Thayer, the principal at Wheeler High School.
We know you've got a great basketball program.
Talk about some of your academic achievements.
We do, Eric.
We're off a part of our basketball program, but we've got a lot of things going on at Wheeler.
We're a mass science technology magnet where students apply is entering freshmen.
They're extremely talented.
They have to be selected and we're proud of them.
We also have an advanced placement program.
We're giving them about a thousand advanced Placement pass beginning May we have an ESL program where we have students from all over the world.
Let me think about that program is last fall in September when they took the Georgia High School writing test.
100% of our kids pass that test.
We also have a program where students tutor students after school and on Saturdays called prep Pals.
We got a lot going on.
I wish I could stay here all day and talk to you.
Sounds like some talented kids.
Thanks a lot, Ed.
Thank you.
Let's go back to you guys.
Thank you, Eric.
Had a nice little crowd shot there of some of the students from Wheeler High School, of course, Georgia Public Broadcasting, all about education.
Charles.
So we like to recognize the entire student body for what they're doing and not just the athletic teams.
Eagles getting in to the forecourt with lots of pressure from the Wildcats across the floor.
They go with the pass, stopping with the jumper as Parker, his cannot convert, but the rebound inside the paint by the way that he does, he's as good looking a sophomore as I've seen in a long time.
Charles Extremely athletic average of 18 points per ballgame at the block Here's Howell trying to dump it over to Jerome but it's batted away by the Eagles.
Well if in 2 minutes and 50 seconds here, this could either open up to a, you know, a big lead before halftime or Milt can get back in this Nulty on the penetration he was fouled six point swing it away would be big for the next 2 minutes and 45 seconds and nice move there by Nulty also from the ten oh to 30 so the freshman will go to the line for Milton.
I know it's a tough line for coach David Boyd is a teacher of the game and yeah how much do you get on these kids?
We're in the middle of a game like this, you know, you they're so young.
You just have to have some patience with them.
It's a tough it's a tough thing to do.
Back to a point.
Healthy for the second year, boy in his second year at Milton on championships at Campbell in 1982.
Berkman in 2000 and 2001 and at Tucker in 1996.
He was there one year, won the state championship.
Taylor Back the other way for the Wildcats, how the left flank handles across the floor.
He swings it back to Taylor Stewart in the corner to the double team.
Got it over to Jerome.
Jerome got it.
Airborne shots off the mark right there on the back with a put back.
This car is Stewart Stewart doing a lot of damage inside with the offensive rebounding just a little too big and physical for the players as they were at six seven 332 Jamaal all onto the floor for the Wildcats 33 Jay Williams back out for work as well down at the block quick pass to Parker Parker with Remmers off the mark there getting that shot Parker Just not putting it down at this point.
That was a good pass, good look and it would go down.
But good defense also made him put it up a little high and he wanted to look at how did Taylor cross the floor to Taylor Now in the corner to hall, back out front, Taylor down at the block.
Take away that anticipation with the steal by Royal.
But they threw it away.
That's when he probably should've held up a little bit.
Didn't have the numbers and you down 13 you want to get the shot So the Wildcats come back with the basketball and leave Middleton in a131 trap and they pull it away.
Shannon Scott back the other way looks at the right side got an airborne stayed on the cylinder for a second fell off but he draws the foul he'll go to the line here you see the replay cuffs it in one hand.
Nice move to get it to go down, but he'll go to the line for two.
And David Boyd will change defenses on you in a heartbeat.
Terrance Charles Scott 12 points, six assists and four steals, four ball ballgame is the first program.
This is on the second.
Stewart clears four wheeler.
Jerome now down at the block.
How Powell square with the jumper missed on it TJ Williams clears for Poeltl He's fouled in the back court Brown as well played first half foul wise as well Charles at play that's the fifth foul on Wheeler Milton only has three fouls in the first half so that's another sign of well-coached teams Eagles will have the basketball they'll have to go the full length of the floor at the block.
Williams by the couple inside tapped away Howell clear so the Wildcats call a run the floor himself had to dump it down low to Stewart with a pass out of bounds 3 seconds left so turnover gives a basketball back to the Eagles.
David Boyd's team may hold for one.
Let's see inside Curry as Parker Nice cut Couldn't finish with a layup The Wildcats back the other way Stewart left it for Taylor behind the arc now back at the block R.E.
Stewart had a tie it up take it away by the Eagles Hamilton They got a three on to foul from behind They get on in the midst of all that on Archie Stewart in the back door okay a call could have gone up as well.
I saw the one you were talking about.
I wonder how they call that an intentional foul.
But that was a mistake by Wheeler, if it is an intentional foul, because that's going to send to the line for the automatic to an expansion of the basketball.
Stewart was catching up with the fray after the transition and obviously felt like he was out of position.
So he held one of the Eagles coming back down the floor and says Baze on Parker to shoot two free throws.
It always felt like they should let at least your teammates stand on the line when you shoot those free throws.
It's such a different look when you're up there all by yourself.
Never thought of that.
Well, that's a guy that couldn't shoot free throw saying that that's what they call the lonely place up there.
So Parker goes one of two from the line.
But the Eagles will get the basketball back with 14.7 seconds left in this first half and look to get something to Julian Royall up inside.
If I was built and see if he can't get him a good look inside or a couple of free throws and Scott handles out front inside TJ Williams on the run.
You left it short.
Basketball over the tiller launches it and that's off the mark brings us to the end of the first half.
It's the Wildcats of Wheeler leading at 29 to 18 over the Eagles of Milton.
Given the couple of runs that the Wildcats had, not too bad situation for Eric Hunter standing by with coach Eric Coach a very close first quarter you're able to put an 11 point lead there in the second quarter.
What was the difference in the second quarter for you?
Well, we got to continue to execute and block out.
Cut down to second chances for you.
What are you going to tell these guys during halftime?
You just keep working hard.
Thanks, Coach.
Back to you guys.
Thank Eric Wheeler leading at 2918.
At the break, we'll step aside for our time out.
Back with more from the arena again at center, this is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station.
And back live getting set to start the third quarter 2918 lead to the Wildcats.
Before we do that, Erik Hunter caught up with coach David Boyd during the break to get his thoughts about the second half.
Erik Thanks, Charles.
Coach, what do you guys do this second half to try to generate a little more offense?
Oh, we've got to do a better job of getting to the basket.
You can't be a good defensive team by shooting jump shots.
I feel like we played pretty good defense, but got to get more going to the rim, got to get more fouls, have those fouls on them.
You don't do that by shooting jump shots.
Well, good luck to the second half, coach.
Thanks, guys.
Thank Eric.
Coach Boyd assessing what's going to happen in the second half.
But here is what happened in the first half.
First half highlights.
The first one started out with the Jumper by De John Parker on Key from Behind the Arc and then DJ PJ Williams missed the shot there with a put back again, This time the basket coming from Julian Rail and Parker back the other way on a jumper.
He missed the same result as with the put back on the missed shot Wildcats got into the scoring three early as well this time Taylor down low R.E.
Stewart with the flush for the Wildcats and here comes Powell leading a break over to Taylor Taylor shots off but Corey Stewart back in the paint with the lay more action on the offensive side for the Wildcats this time Taylor fishin down low Same guy already Stewart For the 249 2918 at the break this is where we are with the stats Well yeah and much better shooting by the Wheeler Wildcats 13 for 26 Milton just 7 to 26 rebounds the Wildcats up by about six and I know coach Boyd would have talked about that a little bit if he'd had more time but both of those plays it all right.
All right.
Got all right.
Stewart got there in the first half, turned into three pointers because he was fouled on each of those put back.
So David Moyes team has got to get more physical on both ends.
They got to take it inside more offensively.
Royall is a great offensive rebound and we've already seen that.
So take it to the hoop.
He's going to follow it in and then block out on defense because Wheeler no doubt is a bigger, stronger, more mature team.
So you're going to have to keep him off the air somehow by Stewart finishing in that first half with nine points and ten rebounds.
Taylor and the Wildcats of Wheeler with the basketball down low.
Howell forced to have a lot of it goes out of bounds basketball over to the Eagles of Milton and let's see if Wheeler stays in that zone that they played most of the half looks like they were going to do that.
It worked for him for the first 16 minutes.
Nulty handles in the corner now.
TJ Williams.
Shannon's got the stage on Pakistan.
NULTY behind the arc for three left that short rebound though TJ Williams gives the Eagles another look double teamed in the corner tied up timeout taken by the Eagles highlight for this time around 30 seconds on this Charles Melton hit a couple of jump shots early in the ballgame I think their first two shots as a matter of fact were perimeter shots and I mean that's always great, but sometimes it can also have an adverse effect because the team thinks, okay, it's going to be easy.
We're hitting our jump shots and they start to rely on that a little too much.
And I think that's what Coach Boyd was talking about early on.
And then we saw Delta a moment ago shoot one way out beyond the three point line, and he's not that strong.
The kid in that one came up short, so he's going to take a jump.
I'd like to see him move in a little closer.

Scott After the timeout, walks it into the floor court with a pass to TJ Williams Left corner Oil handles it on the arc Rawls fires a three pointer.
Royal flushes that one for the Eagles.
That's a no no no Yeah kind of shot for Coach Boyd right there.
He got the three Wildcats back the other way.
Stewart on a reverse misconduct.
The Bears call for the tap inside the paint.
They didn't put a body on him on the inside.
And Hall made them pay with the tap in.
Yeah.
Powell and Stewart both doing the job on the offensive board.
And that's the difference in this ballgame right now.
Scott working right side now Williams on the move bounce pass in the corner jumper again by Howell correction here in the wild same result I'm not sure he didn't bank that off the corner of the backboard Charles I like to see that one again but you know easier said than done to to penetrate offensively against this Wheeler zone they're very very quick so but if they keep it some jumpers that'll open it up a level for him Taylor has a shot rejected in the paint.
Basketball all over the royal eagles right there on Parker behind the arc Lola pass inside to Williams tied up now out of Scott with the jumper behind the arc Now inside just inside the arc to got to but he got it to fall He got a great look that time and they penetrated against the wheeler zone on the break got him collapsed and Parker stepped up to hit about a 14 footer lead now for Wheeler down to six sharp jumper by Cochran he converts Parker out front Scott on the move down to Nulty head fakes to the rack to the glass Nicely done by Evans multiplied by Wheeler showing basically that three two zone making it tough to penetrate from up in the top of it but a nice head fake by Nulty then to get inside here's Howell on the move Hart to the rack he missed Stewart's put back on the backside is off the mark but he draws a foul I believe Del Jan got him from behind.
But again the offensive board work by Stewart and how killing Milton inside.
Take a look at how to the rack and then that backside positioning by Stewart they are dominating down in the paint first free throw by Stewart a runner is off for Milton it's cut that lead a lead score converts on one of two more time out on the floor, 454 remaining in the third wheeler, 30 for Milton, 27.
And things are getting tight.
Stick around.
Polo's got to hurry down for seconds.
Will he get a shot off behind the arc he fires?
It looks short and it is short.
The Blue Devils have three people.
History in the making, Charles.
History in the making.
They'll have a shot at number four next year.
Back to back to back 55 remaining in the third quarter.
Wildcats leader leading at 4427 over the Eagles of Milton and Milton.
Starting to get into some rhythm here hurts.
Yeah they come out got some really nice looks at the basket here in the second half Charles doing a good job and got a step up the defense just a little bit more and block out underneath.
See if they can keep Ari Stewart and Howell off those boards because if they can limit Wheeler to one shot, they can get this thing back evened up.
Coach boy, talk about those series of corrections they had to make in the second half.
Looks like they're taking a phase by phase by phase one of their last is just what you talk about, stopping those big guys and getting a second look.
Opportunities inside was easier said than done.
Stewart and Howard both going major college ACC players and they're going to be good players in the east.
So that's a handful, especially for sophomores and freshmen.
Stewart To Wake Forest.
Powell To North Carolina State Shannon Scott, dish it back down in the corner.
Another three point shot by Royal.
This one's off the mark.
There's Parker with a cutback.
They'll get to go 10 hours north during that basketball.
On his way down nice quick hops by John Parker inside the paint Yeah it only six two.
He's gone up really high over everybody and grabbed a couple of rebounds and excellent work out of him Phil Taylor the junior for the Wildcats controls a basketball inside Howell nice dish pass over to Coppin Parker with a heart still inside the paint does a couple of quick push ups to show he's in fine fettle.
I'm sorry, Charles, but I'm really impressed with Richard Howell's passing.
For a68 guy, he sees the floor as well as anybody.
I've seen his size in a while, so I want to know.
Look, pass inside and you get a good pass.
And player like him in that middle and Milton was in the 131 zone man and he can he can really hurt you when he gets that ball in the middle like that all Kyle with five points on the evening now make it six one out of this ballgame five state champs, both coaches David Boyd and Doug Lipscomb.
Four wheeler going for their fifth title offense.
Good on the second.
Jamal Tiller back out on the floor for the Wildcats.
He replaces Parker, who just converted on the two free throws.
Well, Coach Lipscomb should happen to win this one, Charles.
Maybe we'll get a couple more words out of him than we did after almost talked Eric's ear off during the break.
He's an intense guy, there's no doubt about it.
Knowles.
He throws it away for the miscommunication there between Nulty and Shannon Scott learned from back out on the floor.
Middleton showing the 131 again how you see turnovers nine nine so dead even in.
But I'll bet you Wheeler's got more points off turnovers right corner Stuart raises with the jumper had a good love rattles it home for the long No answer for Ari Stuart yet from Milton He's doing it inside and outside Nulty handles right corner called the double team stepped away from him Good defensive work by Joey Jerome and healthy is really got to be careful he's just he's just a freshman he's not a strong kid and Wheeler is going to come after him.
They're going to bang him a little bit.
And if the officials let him get away with the little contact, they're going to steal the ball from him.
He's got to be aware and get rid of that ball in a hurry.
Absolutely.
Excellent point here.
They just jumped him in the corner and just stripped it away from it.
Now, Taylor at the block tower turns from ten with the jumper.
Oh, was that nice little Scott is pushed again milk play a pretty good defense that time down the floor but Richard Howell just turned completely under control.
No hurry.
Nobody out there is going to block his shot unless he's right in Royal's face and just loft it up a little.
Fadeaway 1214 footer Absolutely the bottom Scott jumpers clock ticking away by the Wildcats.
Taylor chases it down for three now on the move toward the rack shot rejected inside by Julian while backside back there by already stored 40 to 29 now Wildcats leading it to the glass had an open lane Parker did but he missed on the lane and he's looking for somebody to try to block his shot.
They didn't go after it.
He just overshot it.
It's Philip Taylor on the move down low shot by Howard is rejected inside by the Eagles back the other way bounce pass stolen away by the Wildcats Now alley oop inside Stewart missed on this shot Howell with another good pass at the rim Stewart just could not hold it Put it down Oh Milton dodged a couple bullets in Charles Those two could have put him away Scott in the paint tied up jump ball calls.
Stay on Milton's end of the floor action Fast and furious the last couple minutes.
Not a lot of points, but a lot of action.
3044 4502 He is still amazed at the number of fouls over three fouls in the second half, Milton and one for Wheeler and the Pacers.
Unbelievable.
So just a tribute to the athleticism and the coaching from these two teams.
They play off pace but they play clean.
Nulty got the lay in on the inside for Milton Taylor down to the block and how they even free for the jumper Howell rims it and sophomore rebound There is a backside rebound by Joey Jerome and Jerome gets the lane and he got fouls that is exactly where the difference is is inside the paint Second shot opportunities for the Wildcats enabling them to keep that lead the ball three play there Howell with a soft jump and then keeping it alive was Chuck Mitchell tapping it to the backboard and that enabled Jerome to get the possession and get the layup.
Ten points, four rebounds tonight for the junior wheeler with a lot of three point plays tonight.
But they're not the jumpers.
They're coming inside Charles, the old fashioned way and you're going to hit a high percentage of those early.
Eric Wyatt on onto the floor now for the Eagles and Milton White, one of those handful of seniors for more critical time in the ballgame now for Milton and Coach Lipscomb, he's going to turn up the pressure, see if he can put this one away right side.
Now, Brody literally inside the paint.
His shot is off the mark.
How about violence by the Wildcats?
Eagles Get another look.
And that maturity inside is just beginning to wear, I believe, on Milton as the game goes along Totally and bounds it in the corner Parker back up top now with it Wildcats seven with two three Airball shot by Parker in the paint Taylor just in front of the wildcat bench out front to Tiller Hall Got his man on his back squares heads to the basket so strong he's able to get that shot off in a way.
Fell off the mark but Chuck Mitchell on the backside there with that under a minute remaining third quarter all the little league handles right side now to nobody back to Italy Nice no love pass inside the royal royal to the glass He got it to fall down he got fouled He'll go to the line about something to use first here you see the replay down there Royal not real strong but he's got excellent body control and touch and put that up soft enough off the board to get to the basket.
And now he's going to go to the line for one.
It reminds him in a lot of Aminu from North Cross couple of years ago that just a69 guy that was through a lot of different things for 13 points on the night for royal Iwundu now Wake Forest playing some excellent basketball for that team royal free throw those in and comes out Wheeler special play for the final shot of this third quarter All right we don't want to foul here give him the shot Go foul Keep the points where they are right now.
The lead foul tonight Powell at the block double team from behind pass bad basketball blocked out of bounds with Eric Schulke heads up play they're coming with the offside but 4.7 seconds left in the third quarter to go to Howard Stuart here Powell behind the arc for three had a good look couldn't put it down now they won't count.
If it goes, it would have waved it off at the end of three it's Wheeler 47 feet.
This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station.
I'm back at the Arena Queen at ten, getting set to start the fourth quarter.
As you take a look at the USA Today boys, five a state champions for the 20 decades first year five play was in 2001.
A good class of teams there but Wheeler tonight trying to that's their name in there one more time and really get ahead of that whole class with four titles in this decade Norcross having taken the last three and Will Norcross had a shot at going for four unprecedented couldn't get it done and Wheeler put them out this year.
And two things when I see that Charles makes me feel proud that you got all those games and old.
Yeah, I feel like we've been around most of that that least on the screen there.
So I'm aware with Pride Herb the Wildcats and the basketball over there you see there you see the prep work by my partner right there folks, I'm gonna tell you what.
This man's got it all.
Just know how to go along with the ball.
Probably got some stuff in there on guys in the truck that you might want to share with other folks before too long.
So I got to see if they're willing to pay for that information first, John Parker set to go to the line for the Wild Cathy Eagles of Milton.
Well, they need these two free throws and they need to get a charge going right now to get back in this ballgame.
14 point deficit.
It's doable.
They got to play heads up all the rest of the way.
I almost get the sense they got to have a really good first half of this final quarter as well.
Yeah, and they just absolutely have to limit the shots by Wheeler.
We're not shooting a great percentage on their first shots, but they're sticking everything back up there on the offensive boards.
And this just killed Milton this evening.
Parker with his fifth point on a night to go along with four rebounds, full court pressure.
Taylor at the sideline tied up over to Jerome now into the fourth quarter without and Tate Mitchell with the pass Ah score that's the problem trying to put pressure on a veteran team Charles these guys have seen it all all right white maneuvers in for the lay up for the Eagles but they're not going to panic and they're going to make the right pass at the right time.
Whereas Howell, with a one hander, he missed on the shot on the last two Royal lost it out of bounds for Milton.
It'll stay with the Wildcats here you see Ari Stuart finishing with authority that's highlight reel for 710 remains of a championship ballgame.
The first is the Howell Boys on four wheeler trying to think back and we've seen a pair of forwards on one team play as well as Stewart and Howell having this ball game And boy, they are just a couple of bookends for your club.
They are played very well together.
Scott with a jumper contested shot fell off the ball over the line for Jordan to roll in the summer of 1984 was called on George Jerome.
So Shannon Scott, the sophomore, was one of the Lions eight sophomores on that note lost it.
And Evan Nulty, the freshman, are back on the floor for Milton.
When I was talking about the young lady from Wesleyan earlier this evening in the first game, Charles Anna marie Armstrong, I might have called Ann Marie Hardaway and Bob Helton, the Wesleyan guy, would never let me get away with that.
So I wanted to correct that.
She is the Gatorade Female Player of the Year.
I'm glad we got back her record and we'll see her in action tomorrow.
Taylor works quickly inside.
Nice dish download of Jerome.
What's inside the paint or I've only got 647 to go.
I certainly don't have time to make up for all my mistakes.
But look, you tried to throw a couple, and every now and then Charlie said, I want to tell you about one mistake that was not made, and that is the Naismith Awards that are coming up here on the 23rd.
So you're going to be recognized for some of the work that you've done in the state of Georgia for high school basketball as well.
So congratulations from all of us.
If we can do for what you've done for high school basketball in the state and for that war.
Well, I tell you what, Charles, they call it work, but I don't know how they can call it work when you have as much fun doing it as I have for the last 12 years.
And I'm going to tell you what, when I look at the list of folks that have won that award, it's pretty humbling, I can tell you that.
But I appreciate that from the Tipoff Club and from you and the well worker from the nine year old Mrs. Basketball to the Eagles.
Parker bright side now at the block Nulty left at short rebound 40 for cleared by Scott Scott to the rack he shot at high shot Mitchell clears for the Wildcats and again no block down on that end of the floor but just in time and in culminating factor of the big guys inside forcing the Eagles to alter their shots ever so slightly and they don't have the body strength to go back up and just overpower the players from Wheeler its 622 remaining in this.
But in this basketball game from earlier today, a wheelchair basketball game it was Atlanta over West Georgia 32 to 22 played earlier today for a championship ballgame in the Southwest.
The Cavs winners, Oklahoma County, 59 to 46.
Southwest, a cab back to back state champs in the girls for eight division Tucker for the boys just annihilated by Miller Grove.
Miller Grove winning its first title 59 to 31 over the Tigers of Tucker.
Congratulations to coach Andy Johnson and for the girls five it was written over Marietta 64 to 40 and congratulations to coach random alone and we've got more basketball coming your way tomorrow, starting at 11 a.m. Wesleyan and Savannah Country Day in the girls single-A championship ballgame, then followed by the boys, Turner County and Windmill Academy, going at it at 1245 to determine the boys champs.
The girls after that, at three it'll be a model.
And Buford, both teams with 31 wins on the season and somebody will get that title for the boys.
Double AA.
That's it.
Trinity will meet Dublin.
That's at a 445 trip from the American Coliseum Girls, Carrollton and Lakeview starting at 7 p.m..
When are that?
The triple AA girls champs of the state.
And then we conclude with the boys triple-A Westover at 29 and six will meet the winner of the South Atlantic Columbia Ball game going on in Macon tonight.
So that's the schedule on tap for tomorrow from Macon, Georgia.
We're five and a half minutes remaining here in the Boys five AA championship.
Taylor from outside left it on the rim, but inside is a push off down low.
Mitchell had the positioning inside.
Yeah, I think they got melted for the push and six for Knowles he probably goes about £135 for him to battle Mitchell back inside and boy look how long it took you to read off all that's going on tomorrow.
Charles Just another great day of basketball.
You got three classifications being decided, boys and girls.
And don't forget, the wheelchair game will be televised in the morning.
It played today, but we'll show that game in the morning and talk about something to be proud of.
Now, Georgia Pelé broadcast.
And this is the six year televised in the wheelchair championship and it's the first time it was ever done.
Six years ago in the country, Georgia Public Broadcasting was the first to televise a wheelchair championship.
And we continue to do it.
And every time those kids wheel out there, it's one of the proudest moments that I have all year with the stuff.
That's Chuck Mitchell.
But as we talk about the schedule coming up tomorrow and the wheelchair ball game as well, just hope we've earned your trust at Georgia Public Broadcasting and you can show that we have earned it by becoming a member and joining us as part of our family app.
And meanwhile, Wheeler putting this one away just a with a 17 point lead with 5 minutes to go, but Milton's going to stay after him.
It's almost had the Steve Powell low on the reverse lay And as George Romero they just never missed the opportunity to make the good pass.
And everybody's always moving on the offense to free themselves.
Parker To the glass shots off the mark.
Put back by Floyd is off the mark.
Scott often missed as well now Parker with another put back and he missed and there's a lid on it for Milton now and you can't underestimate what a big guy can do for you that can pass the ball and look at that move by How over there on the floor very well for 26 left time out on the floor on replay by how well he's a senior.
He's under control.
He's not rushed and he's just out there having fun now.
And we are feeling pretty good right about now.
A 21 point lead with 4 minutes and something to go.
And David Boyd's over there teaching his young team what it's all about.
How old at six, Eight.
Maneuvering like that really didn't even get into that kind of air until he got into pass the Magic Johnson there to see a guy that large that can handle the ball back well down the floor.
Here's a follow up right here stuff Mitchell almost thought the bring the goal down here in the arena Yep just too much inside too much power, too much maturity.
Once again, that's what we talk about early in this game.
And Wheeler's just done it now, Milton has handled any pressure that Wheeler's been able to throw at them.
They got some good looks.
They haven't been able to get it to go down and they haven't been able to get a lot of offensive board work to go down either.
Just because of the size and strength of this Wheeler team inside Wheeler, 62, Milton 41.
After the time out players making it back onto the floor.
It's the seventh title game that Doug Lipscomb has participated in as a head coach of the year since taking over that program in 1993.
And as we indicated, both he and Coach Boyd contending for their fifth state title in this ball game tonight.
And forget, we'll get to see favors Georgia Tech signee and a National player of the year, the Naismith Player of the Year.
He's going to be playing tomorrow on Georgia Public Broadcasting with Steele coming back the other way behind the back pass to Howell.
And he's fouled inside the paint.
Want to throw another one down but a good clean play just going for the basketball this once again Cochran leaving it behind for Howell with the foul inside by the Eagles Howell on the night 15 points and seven rebounds He does it all the better he's got five or six assists as well Charles and nice stroke at the free throw line too.
Well there's just Georgia high school players You turn on and watch the NCAA playoffs you know the with the tournament and you're going to see players from Georgia all the time playing for these contending teams.
It's just amazing the talent coming out of Georgia every year, going to play college basketball, and hopefully in a couple of years we're going to be getting some of the University of Georgia.
Hey, this factor back the other way.
There's the stock already scored a great lead pass from Richard Howell.
Cross the floor now white for three He missed on the shot.
Phillips cleared but had it stripped out Taylor cleared to have it struck the last two.
Here you see another highlight.
All right, Stuart from Richard Howell.
And Charles, what happens?
You have to try to pressure.
You have to try to press, you have to try to steal the ball and get back in the ballgame.
But what happens then is it just turns into a highlight reel when they beat the press.
So it's going to end up being a worse score than it would have been if Coach Boyd had just tried to play it out, You know, without pressing.
But you got to try to do it, see if he can create some stuff.
And unfortunately, this Wheeler team is just too talented and too mature to let the pressure bother them.
Excellent.
Turnover by the Eagles gives the basketball back to the Wildcats.
334 left in the contest, taken away by Brody Little in the little Stetson for the lamb for the Eagles Foul up front across the floor to Taylor Wheeler runner up last year to Norcross.
It's up to them on the record to send.
They had to work really hard to get back to this spot from a year ago, hoping for a better result.
So far, he's got Taylor Reynolds at three.
Good learning exercise for this young Eagles team.
Yes, it is.
And you can take some pretty good bets on seeing this team again on Georgia Public Broadcasting down the road Trials number eight, John Parker connects on the three pointer for Milton heads up Taylor back the other way and on the wildcat spreading that floor whistles inside the paint and pretty sure it's over Parker picks up the foul That's pretty much been Julian Royal on his own in there against Powell and Stewart this evening for Milton and again he's an excellent ball player but he's just a sophomore go on Parker is an excellent leaper but he's only six to Del's on Parker so that doesn't really bother Stuart and how when they get around the hoop howls good on the first and he's a guy that can play maybe five positions for you if he has to bring it up and play point guard.
I imagine we've seen it.
Scott Behind the arc now.
Parker at the BLOCK.
Scott for three in and out of there quickly up the floor Score missed on the lay and he was fouled inside the paint All right now the margin between the teams is the largest and right now the other two score there you see Stuart's work in 18 points, 14 boards.
It's not a tremendous percentage tonight.
Don't want to shout from the field, but it's well over 50% because a lot of them have come on dunks and put that one.
Eric White back out on the floor for the Eagles of Milton.
He replaces Shannon Scott Ari Stuart eight for 12 from the floor tonight so I'm right once again I have to point it out I'm chuckling because I'm getting some rude comments in my ear that the public can't hear it.
Thank goodness I'm familiar with those little league comments on a three pointer.
Gets it back to a 20 point margin.
Largest margin of victory right now for the Wildcats over Milton.
In the two previous ballgames, deficits were a lot closer to where they are now.
Stuart was going for the dog.
He lost a handle on it.
Powell was going for the behind the back pass.
He missed it.
Now Parker back the other way.
He converts on the left in the last one minute remains Taylor out for three.
If they get a dead ball, if Coach Lipscomb pulls out a couple of his seniors, there's some applause from the Wheeler Wildcat section.
Here he goes, sending them to the table.
Now the Wildcats starting to celebrate.
Now, here's Richard Powell, Horace Stewart, these two of the starting seniors for the Wildcats and if they take their seats now, very impressive performance by the Wheeler Wildcats, Not only an athletic team, but a well coached team.
Fundamentally sound.
And when you put those two together, it can be mighty tough on an opponent.
Charles.
And as we mentioned Wheeler very well coached team too with David Boyd just didn't have the strength and maturity to go up against these Wheeler wildcats this evening out celebration starts side of the last title for the Lipscomb in the Wildcats 2005.
They will close out this this 2829 season picking up their fifth state title and this decade Derek Evans, a reservist handling the basketball for the Wildcats.
Charles, as always, a great pleasure to work with you and probably didn't show up on camera how much weight the team lost it really looking good, man.
Making you look years younger.
Likewise.
Yeah, really look slim and trim to her.
Back to your playing weight, huh?
The love fest continues at the buzzer.
They get another basket.
So final score in the boys five.
A state championship ballgame.
That's Wheeler winning it 7353 over the Eagles of Milton.
The Wildcats of Wheeler.
Your boys five a state champs the year 2009.
It's got to be getting real crowded in that trophy case over there.
Wheeler They may have to make an addition to a player celebrating with the fans will step aside for time out and back with more from the boys five state championship.
Remember this is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station on Wheeler Wildcats, playing the Boys five, a state title.
Eric Holder standing by.
What coach gathered up some coaching.
Now you guys have done this before, but how sweet does his title taste?
Very good.
First of all, I say hello to my mother and grandmother and I won't tell you this is for you too, baby.
After you came so close last season, what was the difference for you guys this year?
Well, we finished the game and I'm so proud of our kids and I'm of our student support right there.
That's fantastic.
Congratulations, Coach.
Go enjoy this victory.
All right.
Well, that's five state titles for Coach Lipscomb.
I'm pretty sure we're going to see a sixth in the near future.
You're likely right about that.
Eric Wildcats of Wheeler when it 7353 over the Eagles of Milton Wildcats a wheeler your boys five state champs state of Georgia on behalf of Herb White Eric Hunter Charles Ward saying thanks so much for watching and we'll see you tomorrow and make funding for this program is provided in part by Georgia's Electric Membership Corporation, the Georgia Student Finance Commission, Regions Bank, the Georgia Lottery, by viewers like you and the Georgia High School Association, who wish to thank the Georgia Dodge Dealers State Farm and naturally fresh for their support of GHC athletic activities.
